Abstract
Objective This study determined the threshold for recurrent depressive episodes that predicted conversion from major depressive disorder (MDD) to bipolar disorder (BD). Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 296 patients diagnosed with MDD for a minimum of 5 years in two university hospitals. We examined their the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition diagnoses and detailed clinical information at the initial admission and yearly assessments after discharge to establish the threshold for recurrent depressive episodes indicating a risk of diagnostic conversion from MDD to BD. Optimal cut-offs were derived using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results ROC curve analysis revealed that more than four recurrent depressive episodes was indicative of potential diagnostic conversion from MDD to BD (area under the curve, 0.604; sensitivity, 0.353; specificity, 0.855; positive predictive value, 0.421; negative predictive value, 0.816). Conclusion These findings suggest that the best predictor of conversion from MDD to BD is more than four recurrent depressive episodes. Our findings have the potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficiency. To validate our results, longitudinal prospective studies are necessary.

Abstract
Previous studies suggested effectiveness of psilocybin in the field of mental health. FDA designated psilocybin as a "breakthrough therapy" for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression (TRD) in 2018. This paper provided a review of psilocybin's potential role in treatment of depression by focusing on published clinical trials. Studies showed that psilocybin, an agonist on 5-HT2A receptors, manifests antidepressant and anxiolytic effects by increasing glutamate transmission, reducing brain inflammation, decreasing default mode network activity. In terms of clinical trials, eleven studies (six open-label and five double blinded randomized clinical trials [DB-RCTs]) trials exploring psilocybin's impact on depression were found. Among open-label studies, a pilot study on TRD patients demonstrated significant reductions in depressive symptoms after two psilocybin sessions. Psilocybin also improved cognitive bias associated with depression. Extension studies confirmed sustained improvements and high remission rates. Among five DB-RCTs, two showed that psilocybin led to significant reductions in anxiety and depression in cancer patients, and the improvements sustained for over six months. In MDD, psilocybin showed rapid reductions in depression, with higher remission rates compared to escitalopram in a DB-RCT. Another DB-RCT showed that psilocybin induced higher decrease in depression around 6 hours after their administrations than placebo. The last DB-RCT showed that in patients with TRD, a single dose of psilocybin 25 mg, but not psilocybin 10 mg, resulted in superior antidepressant effect than psilocybin 1 mg. Overall, psilocybin showed promise in treating depression and anxiety, with notable safety profiles. Further research should explore optimal dosages and long-term effects.

Abstract
The most common aging-related neurodegenerative disorder is Alzheimer's disease (AD), of which the main symptom is memory disturbance. Though the mechanism of AD pathogenesis is not fully defined, abnormal aggregation of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques and tau have been considered as key factors and main histological hallmarks of the disease. Astrocyte is responsible for the control of cells and the environment around brain and spinal cord cells. Astrocytes have been implicated with AD. However, the exact function of astrocytes in AD has not been established. In this study, we investigated the regulation of astrocytes in the AD model using primary cultures. We have demonstrated that oligomerized Aβ is toxic to neurons and can induce cell death in primary cultures. In the primary cultures containing neurons and astrocytes, amyloid beta uptake was observed in both neurons and astrocytes. To verify if the uptake of amyloid beta in astrocytes is dependent on neurons, we separated and cultured primary astrocytes with no neurons. Amyloid uptake was still observed in this pure astrocyte culture, suggesting that the uptake of amyloid beta is a neuron-independent function of astrocytes. Astrocyte activation was observed in both pure and mixed cultures. Taken together, our data suggest that astrocyte is activated by oligomerized Aβ and uptakes it, which is independent of neurons.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has multiple negative impacts on the psychiatric health of both those previously infected and not infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Moreover, the negative impacts of COVID-19 are closely associated with geographical region, culture, medical system, and ethnic background. We summarized the evidence of the impact of COVID-19 on the psychiatric health of the Korean population. This narrative review included thirteen research articles, which investigated the impact of COVID-19 on the psychiatric health of Koreans. COVID-19 survivors were reported to have a 2.4 times greater risk of developing psychiatric disorders compared to members of a control group, and anxiety and stress-related disorders were the most common newly diagnosed psychiatric illnesses. Studies also reported that COVID-19 survivors had a 3.33-fold higher prevalence of insomnia, a 2.72-fold higher prevalence of mild cognitive impairment, and a 3.09-fold higher prevalence of dementia compared to the control group. In addition, more than four studies have highlighted that the medical staff members, including nurses and medical students, exhibit a greater negative psychiatric impact of COVID-19. However, none of the articles investigated the biological pathophysiology or mechanism linking COVID-19 and the risk of diverse psychiatric disorders. Moreover, none of the studies were actual prospective studies. Thus, longitudinal studies are needed to more clearly elucidate the effect of COVID-19 on the psychiatric health of the Korean population. Lastly, studies focusing on preventing and treating COVID-19-associated psychiatric problems are needed to provide a benefit in real clinical settings.

Abstract
Introduction Many adolescents with suicidal ideation receive support through the Internet. However, they also find ways to attempt suicide or strengthen their suicidal ideation through this medium. This study analyzed the association between the search volume of suicide-related terms and the number of suicides among Korean adolescents. We also analyzed the correlations between the search volumes of suicide-related terms. Methods We selected seven words (suicide, self-injury, depression, academic score, school violence, outcasts, and family trouble) related to adolescent suicide. A dataset was constructed by combining data from the most commonly used search engine in Korea (Naver Datalab) and the daily number of adolescent suicides in school settings (n = 347) from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018, collected from the Ministry of Education. Poisson regression and Pearson correlation analyses were performed. Results Significant associations were found between suicide attempts and search term volumes, which differed according to sex and time interval. Among the search terms, "self-injury" was most strongly associated with suicide, and this association was significant at all time intervals (daily, weekly, and monthly) in female adolescents and in the total population. Further, the association was strongest in the daily suicide data. More search term volumes were related to suicide in the daily and weekly data than in the monthly data. There were positive correlations between "suicide," "self-injury," and "depression" search volumes. Conclusion Further studies with larger sample sizes, more search terms, and analysis of time intervals between suicide-related term search and suicide death are required. These studies can contribute to the establishment of an online suicide prevention system to detect suicide risk in adolescents and provide interventions.

Abstract
A testing method to identify statistically significant differences by comparing the significance level and the probability value based on the Null Hypothesis Significance Test (NHST) has been used in food research. However, problems with this testing method have been discussed. Several alternatives to the NHST and the P-value test methods have been proposed including lowering the P-value threshold and using confidence interval (CI), effect size, and Bayesian statistics. The CI estimates the extent of the effect or difference and determines the presence or absence of statistical significance. The effect size index determines the degree of effect difference and allows for the comparison of various statistical results. Bayesian statistics enable predictions to be made even when only a small amount of data is available. In conclusion, CI, effect size, and Bayesian statistics can complement or replace traditional statistical tests in food research by replacing the use of NHST and P-value.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether and how three demographic factors-age group, gender, and consumption frequency-affect texture perception and liking of two staple foods-cooked rice and wheat bread. In total, 346 adults evaluated three cooked rice and four wheat bread samples in terms of three (hardness, stickiness, and chewiness) and four textural attributes (hardness, moistness, chewiness, and softness), respectively, on both 9-point intensity and 5-point Just-About-Right (JAR) scales. Liking of test samples was also rated on 9-point hedonic scales. Age group and gender differed in mean ratings, standard deviations, and JAR responses regarding textural attribute intensity and overall liking of test samples, while the effect of consumption frequency was minimal in this regard. Significant contributors of textural attributes to overall liking of cooked rice and wheat bread differed with age group, gender, and consumption frequency. Effects of age group, gender, and consumption frequency on texture perception and overall liking also varied with test samples. This study provides agricultural and food systems professionals with systematic evidence of how textural attribute perception and liking of foods can change based on demographics and test samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have investigated the association between suicide and internet search volumes of terms related to suicide or self-harm. However, the results varied by people's age, period, and country, and no study has exclusively investigated suicide or self-harm rates among adolescents. OBJECTIVE This study aims to determine the association between the internet search volumes of terms related to suicide/self-harm and the number of suicides among South Korean adolescents. We investigated gender differences in this association and the time lag between the internet search volumes of the terms and the connected suicide deaths. METHODS We selected 26 search terms related to suicide and self-harm among South Korean adolescents, and the search volumes of these terms for adolescents aged 13-18 years were obtained from the leading internet search engine in South Korea (Naver Datalab). A data set was constructed by combining data from Naver Datalab and the number of suicide deaths of adolescents on a daily basis from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2020. Spearman rank correlation and multivariate Poisson regression analyses were performed to identify the association between the search volumes of the terms and the suicide deaths during that period. The time lag between suicide death and the increasing trend in the search volumes of the related terms was estimated from the cross-correlation coefficients. RESULTS Significant correlations were observed within the search volumes of the 26 terms related to suicide/self-harm. The internet search volumes of several terms were associated with the number of suicide deaths among South Korean adolescents, and this association differed by gender. The search volume for "dropout" showed a statistically significant correlation with the number of suicides in all adolescent population groups. The correlation between the internet search volume for "dropout" and the connected suicide deaths was the strongest for a time lag of 0 days. In females, self-harm and academic score showed significant associations with suicide deaths, but academic score showed a negative correlation, and the time lags with the strongest correlations were 0 and -11 days, respectively. In the total population, self-harm and suicide method were associated with the number of suicides, and the time lags with the strongest correlations were +7 and 0 days, respectively. CONCLUSIONS This study identifies a correlation between suicides and internet search volumes related to suicide/self-harm among South Korean adolescents, but the relatively weak correlation (incidence rate ratio 0.990-1.068) should be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease is one of the most critical brain diseases. The prevalence of the disease keeps rising due to increasing life spans. This study aims to examine the use of hemodynamic signals during hypoxic respiratory challenge for the differentiation of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and wild-type (WT) mice. Diffuse optical spectroscopy, an optical system that can non-invasively monitor transient changes in deoxygenated (ΔRHb) and oxygenated (ΔOHb) hemoglobin concentrations, was used to monitor hemodynamic reactivity during hypoxic respiratory challenges in an animal model. From the acquired signals, 13 hemodynamic features were extracted from each of ΔRHb and -ΔOHb (26 features total) for more in-depth analyses of the differences between AD and WT. The hemodynamic features were statistically analyzed and tested to explore the possibility of using machine learning (ML) to differentiate AD and WT. Among the twenty-six features, two features of ΔRHb and one feature of -ΔOHb showed statistically significant differences between AD and WT. Among ML techniques, a naive Bayes algorithm achieved the best accuracy of 84.3% when whole hemodynamic features were used for differentiation. While further works are required to improve the approach, the suggested approach has the potential to be an alternative method for the differentiation of AD and WT.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Emergency nurses serve a vital role in disaster situations. Understanding their disaster preparedness and willingness to respond to a disaster is important in maintaining appropriate disaster management. The purpose of this study was to explore emergency nurses' disaster preparedness and willingness to respond based on demographic and disaster-related characteristics, and their willingness to respond based on specific disaster situations. METHODS In this descriptive, cross-sectional study, the Disaster Preparedness Questionnaire for Nurses and willingness to report to duty by type of event were used to collect data from 158 nurses working in four regional emergency medical centers from 1 December 2019 to 30 April 2020 in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS Emergency nurses with personal disaster experience as a victim or witness (t = 3.65, p < 0.001), professional disaster experience (i.e., working as a nurse) (t = 3.58, p < 0.001), who were current members of Korean Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (t = 6.26, p < 0.001), and who received disaster-related training within a year (t = 5.84, p < 0.001) showed a high level of perceived disaster preparedness. Emergency nurses who have professional disaster experience (i.e., working as a nurse) (t = 2.42, p = 0.017), are on a current disaster team (t = 2.39, p = 0.018), and have received disaster training (t = 2.73, p = 0.007) showed a high level of willingness to respond. Our study showed a high willingness to respond to natural disasters and low willingness to respond to technological disasters. DISCUSSION To promote the engagement of emergency nurses in disaster response, disaster education programs should be expanded. Enhancing the safety of disaster response environments through supplementing medical personnel, distributing available resources, and providing sufficient compensation for emergency nurses is also essential.

Abstract
Objective The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of continued olanzapine (OLA) versus amisulpride (AMI) augmentation in schizophrenic patients with poor response to OLA monotherapy. Methods The present 4-week, randomized, rater-blinded study included 25 patients with schizophrenia who were partially or completely unresponsive to treatment with OLA monotherapy. Eligible subjects were randomly assigned at a 11 ratio to continuation of OLA monotherapy (OLA group) or OLA with AMI augmentation (AMI group). Efficacy was primarily evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at baseline and at 1, 2, and 4 weeks. Results The changes in PANSS total score and PANSS-positive subscale score were significantly different (p < 0.05) between the OLA and AMI groups. The differences between the two groups in PANSS-negative subscale, PANSS-general subscale, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, and Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S) scale scores were not statistically significant. Conclusion AMI augmentation could be an effective strategy for patients with schizophrenia who show inadequate early response to OLA monotherapy.

Abstract
This study explored the physiochemical and rheological properties of chicken
breast sausages containing red ginseng marc (RGM) which contains useful
components but is discarded. When compared to the control group, the use of RGM
significantly increased the water holding capacity (WHC) as the particle size
increased. As for the change in color value, addition of RGM resulted in an
increase in a and b values; as the quantity was increased and particle size
decreased, the a and b values increased significantly. The smaller the particle
size of RGM, the greater was the radical scavenging activity. According to the
results of the measurement of the viscoelasticity of chicken breast sausage
containing RGM, the G’ and G’’ values increased with
increasing amounts of RGM and particle size. Neither the addition of RGM nor its
amount or particle size had any significant effect on gel formation temperature.
The texture profile analysis (TPA) experiment examined the average TPA
measurements of each sample under different measurement conditions, and no
significant difference between the RGM and control groups were observed. In
conclusion, when RGM is used in chicken breast sausages, the WHC, antioxidant
capacity, and viscoelastic properties are affected. RGM can possibly be utilized
in high value-added processed meat products if its quantity and particle size
are altered based on product characteristics.

Abstract
Mitochondrial dysfunction is a key element in the progression of Parkinson’s disease (PD). The inefficient operation of the electron transport chain (ETC) impairs energy production and enhances the generation of oxidative stress contributing to the loss of dopaminergic cells in the brain. ATPase inhibitory factor 1 (IF1) is a regulator of mitochondrial energy metabolism. IF1 binds directly to the F1Fo ATP synthase and prevents ATP wasting during compromised energy metabolism. In this study, we found treatment with IF1 protects mitochondria against PD-like insult in vitro. SH-SY5Y cells treated with IF1 were resistant to loss of ATP and mitochondrial inner membrane potential during challenge with rotenone, an inhibitor of complex I in the ETC. We further demonstrated that treatment with IF1 reversed rotenone-induced superoxide production in mitochondria and peroxide accumulation in whole cells. Ultimately, IF1 decreased protein levels of pro-apoptotic Bax, cleaved caspase-3, and cleaved PARP, rescuing SH-SY5Y cells from rotenone-mediated apoptotic death. Administration of IF1 significantly improved the results of pole and hanging tests performed by PD mice expressing human α-synuclein. This indicates that IF1 mitigates PD-associated motor deficit. Together, these findings suggest that IF1 exhibits a neuroprotective effect preventing mitochondrial dysfunction in PD pathology.

Abstract
Virtual surgical planning for orthognathic surgery using patient-specific implants (PSI) is usually waferless nowadays. However, without an occlusal wafer, difficulties arise in controlling the accuracy of multi-segment maxillary osteotomies, especially for expansion and rotational movements of each segment. It is technically challenging intraoperatively to manipulate multiple segments to fit into the PSI, as the relatively small bone segments need to be secured into the PSI while simultaneously achieving individual segment movements in all planes and with potential bony interferences with each other. Therefore, the use of a maxillary tooth-supported surgical guide is proposed and described. When the guide is inserted before the PSI, it overcomes difficulties in handling multiple maxillary segments and facilitates achieving maximal positional precision of each individual bone segment. The guide enables multiple smaller segments to behave as one unit with the designated occlusion whilst visualizing bony interferences before PSI plating is commenced. Adding a tooth-borne surgical guide in the form of a wafer and a customized arch bar is a cost-effective method to enhance accuracy in virtually planned multi-segment maxillary surgery. Further investigations are required to validate the accuracy and advantages of using wafers and PSI in multi-segment maxillary and mandibular orthognathic surgeries.

Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of neurodegeneration. It is characterized by deposits of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques and impaired memory. Microglia are associated with AD. They are activated in the AD brain and AD models. However, the exact role of microglia has not been established. We thus investigated the role of microglia in AD models using a primary culture and an ex-vivo assay. We showed that oligomerized Aβ is toxic to neurons in the primary culture. In the ex-vivo assay, a microglial cell line removed amyloid plaques in the brain of 5XFAD (AD model) mice. To verify if microglia can be protective for the neuron, we co-cultured neurons with primary microglia and treated them with Aβ. The loss of neurons, induced by amyloid toxicity, was attenuated by co-cultured microglia. Taken together, our data suggest that microglia promote neuronal survival by phagocytic clearance of Aβ in AD models.

Abstract
This study examined the measurement conditions of the texture profile analysis
(TPA) experiments that are typically used to measure the physical properties of
sausage. As the measurement conditions (compression ratio and cross-head speed)
were changed, the significant differences between the values of textural
parameters (hardness, adhesiveness, springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness) of
samples changed. Furthermore, among the measurement conditions, there was more
variation in the significant difference between the value of samples due to a
change in the compression ratio than due to a change in the cross-head speed.
The highest variation in significant difference was observed between the values
of cohesiveness of samples due to changes in measurement conditions, whereas the
lowest variation in significant difference was observed between the values of
springiness of samples due to change in measurement conditions. Therefore, it is
desirable to provide a clear basis for setting specific measurement conditions
for TPA test, since significant differences in the values of textural parameters
of samples were caused by differences in cross-head speed or compression ratio,
not by a difference in samples, when analyzing the cohesiveness of sausage,
especially.

Abstract
Spatial deviations of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) after oncological mandibular reconstruction are important to the aesthetic and functional rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to clarify whether and how three dimensionally (3D) printed patient-specific surgical plates, and the preservation of the condyle or ramus, affect spatial deviations of the TMJ. A total of 33 patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction via computer-assisted surgery were included. Regarding absolute deviations, patients in the 3D-printed plate group showed smaller TMJ deviations compared to those in the conventional plate group. There was no difference in absolute deviations of the TMJ regardless of whether the condyle or ramus was preserved. Regarding physiological deviations, the impact on the contralateral TMJ was smaller in the 3D-printed plate group. Patients with both the condyle and ramus removed had significantly higher deviations of the condyle and joint space. In summary, 3D-printed patient-specific surgical plates improved the spatial accuracy of the TMJ. Under physiological conditions, TMJ deviations on the operated side were mainly affected by the preservation of the condyle. Removal of both the condyle and ramus caused more severe spatial interference to the TMJ; this should be further confirmed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop a robust, quality controlled, and reproducible erythroid culture system to obtain high numbers of mature erythroblasts and red blood cells (RBCs). This was achieved using a fully controlled stirred-tank bioreactor by the design of experiments (DOE) methods in the serum-free medium by defining the appropriate culture parameters. Human cord blood CD34+ cells were first cultured in static flasks and then inoculated to stirred-tank bioreactors. Cell diameter was gradually decreased and final RBC yields were significantly higher when cells were inoculated at sizes smaller than 12 μm. The larger immature cells in the basophilic stage did not survive, while smaller mature erythroid cells were successfully expanded at high agitation speeds, demonstrating that appropriate seeding timing is critical. A high inoculation cell density of 5 × 106 cells/ml was achieved reaching 1.5 × 107 cells/ml. By using DOE analysis fitted to precise stages of erythropoiesis, we were able to acquire the optimal culture parameters for pH (7.5), temperature (37°C), dissolved oxygen, agitation speed (500 rpm), inoculation timing (cell diameter 12-13 μm), media feeding regimen, and cell seeding density (5 × 106 cells/ml). The final pure RBCs showed appropriate functions compared with fresh donor RBCs, confirming that manufacturing mature RBCs with reproducibility is possible.

Abstract
The sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) are two common orthognathic procedures for the treatment of mandibular prognathism. This randomized clinical trial compared the surgical morbidities between SSRO and IVRO for patients with mandibular prognathism over the first 2 years postoperative. Ninety-eight patients (40 male, 58 female) with a mean age of 24.4±3.5 years underwent bilateral SSRO (98 sides) or IVRO (98 sides) as part or all of their orthognathic surgery. IVRO presented less short-term and long-term surgical morbidity in general. The SSRO group had a greater incidence of inferior alveolar nerve deficit at all follow-up time points (P< 0.01). There was more TMJ pain at 6 weeks (P= 0.047) and 3 months (P= 0.001) postoperative in the SSRO group. The SSRO group also presented more minor complications, which were related to titanium plate exposure and infection. There were no major complications for either technique in this study. Despite the need for intermaxillary fixation, IVRO appears to be associated with less surgical morbidity than SSRO when performed as a mandibular setback procedure to treat mandibular prognathism.

Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive dysfunction and memory loss as the main symptoms. The deposition of amyloid beta (Aβ) and tau hyperphosphorylation are hallmarks of AD and are major therapeutic targets. However, the exact etiology has not yet been fully elucidated; thus, no drug that cures the disease has been approved. JBPOS0101 is a phenyl carbamate compound that has been tested as a drug for epileptic diseases. In our previous study, we showed that JBPOS0101 attenuated the accumulation of Aβ as well as the deficits in learning and memory in the 5xFAD mouse model. Here, we tested the dose effect (70 or 35 mg/kg) of JBPOS0101 on the memory defect and pathological markers and further investigated the underlying mechanisms in 5xFAD mice. In the behavior tests, JBPOS0101 treatment ameliorated deficits in learning and memory. Moreover, JBPOS0101 attenuated Aβ accumulation and tau phosphorylation. The elevated phosphorylation levels of the active GSK3β form (GSK3β-y216) in 5xFAD, which are responsible for tau phosphorylation, decreased in the JBPOS0101-treated groups. Furthermore, the elevation of reactive astrocytes and microglia in 5xFAD mice was attenuated in JBPOS0101-treated groups. These data suggest that JBPOS0101 may be a new drug candidate to lessen amyloid- and tau-related pathology by regulating glial cells.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the technical feasibility and safety of percutaneous recanalisation of benign postoperative hepaticojejunostomy strictures using the reverse end of a microwire. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-one patients with benign postoperative hepaticojejunostomy strictures that had failed to recanalise following management with conventional percutaneous techniques from January 2012 to March 2019 were included in the study. The stricture was punctured by the reverse end of a microwire. Subsequently, serial balloon dilatation and covered stent placement was performed. Technical as well as clinical success, complications, and patency of the hepaticojejunostomy were evaluated. RESULTS Technical success was achieved in 19 of 21 (90.5%) patients. The mean number of treatment sessions was 1.2 (range, 1-2). The obstructive symptoms were resolved within 3 days after the procedure in 19 patients (100%). There were no major complications. The 1-year and 3-year patency rates were 76.9% and 61.5%, respectively. CONCLUSION Percutaneous recanalisation using the reverse end of a microwire is technically feasible and safe in the treatment of benign postoperative hepaticojejunostomy strictures. This technique is useful when the conventional percutaneous technique cannot be used to cross the stricture.

Abstract
In this study, we have prepared a composite adsorbent with highly dispersed Mn and Ag nanocatalyst on the surface of activated carbon (AC) by applying the Radio-Frequency (RF) thermal plasma technique for the efficient removal of VOCs. The ACs before and after metal impregnation with RF plasma treatment were characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, and nitrogen adsorption analysis. Adsorption behaviors of toluene, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde on ACs before and after modification were also investigated in fixed-bed systems. The experimental adsorption results for VOCs on parent ACs and metal impregnated ACs (Mn-AC and Mn/Ag-AC) were well explained by modified continuous sigmoidal (MCS) model.

Abstract
Recent studies have revealed that protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) are responsible for diverse neurodegenerative diseases. However, their pathophysiological role in dopaminergic neuronal death in Parkinson's disease (PD) has not been evaluated. In this study, we demonstrated that 1-Methyl-4-phenylpyridinium iodide (MPP+), rotenone and paraquat, which cause dopaminergic neuronal cell death, increased PRMT1 expression in dopaminergic cell line. Dopaminergic neuronal cell death was increased by PRMT1 overexpression. MPP+-induced cell death was attenuated by PRMT1 knockdown. Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP1) expression and activity, poly-ADP-ribosylation (PARylation), were elevated by MPP+. Moreover, we found that PRMT1 positively regulates nuclear translocation of apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF). Elevated PRMT1 expression was observed in the substantia nigra pars compacta of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-injected mice. Furthermore, MPTP-induced dopaminergic neuronal death was reduced in PRMT1 haploinsufficient (prmt1+/-) mice. These data suggest that PRMT1 is implicated in PARP1/AIF-mediated dopaminergic neuronal cell death, which might be involved in the pathology of PD. Therefore, our results propose PRMT1 as a new target to develop a potential treatment of PD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Based on the metabolic effect of exogenous ATPase inhibitory factor 1 (IF1) on glucose metabolism, we tested whether IF1 treatment is effective in ameliorating weight gain and whether its effects are sex specific. METHODS HFD-fed C57BL/6 mice were treated with IF1 (5 mg/kg body weight, injected intraperitoneally). The underlying mechanisms of effect of IF1 on body weight were investigated in vitro and in vivo. Associations between genotypes of IF1 and obesity and relevant phenotype were further tested at the population level. RESULTS Chronic treatment with IF1 significantly decreased body weight gain by regulating food intake of HFD-fed male mice. IF1 activated the AKT/mTORC pathway and modulated the expression of appetite genes in the hypothalamus of HFD-fed male mice and its effect was confirmed in hypothalamic cell lines as well as hypothalamic primary cells. This required the interaction of IF1 with β-F1-ATPase on the plasma membrane of hypothalamic cells, which led to an increase in extracellular ATP production. In addition, IF1 treatment showed sympathetic nerve activation as measured by serum norepinephrine levels and UCP-1 expression in the subcutaneous fat of HFD-fed male mice. Notably, administration of recombinant IF1 to HFD-fed ovariectomized female mice showed remarkable reductions in food intake as well as body weight, which was not observed in wild-type 5-week female mice. Lastly, sex-specific genotype associations of IF1 with obesity prevalence and metabolic traits were demonstrated at the population level in humans. IF1 genetic variant (rs3767303) was significantly associated with lower prevalence of obesity and lower levels of body mass index, waist circumference, hemoglobin A1c, and glucose response area only in male participants. CONCLUSION IF1 is involved in weight regulation by controlling food intake and potentially sympathetic nerve activation in a sex-specific manner.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of timing and appropriateness of antibiotics administration on mortality in patients diagnosed with sepsis according to the Sepsis-3 definition. METHODS This prospective cohort study was conducted in patients diagnosed with sepsis according to the Sepsis-3 definition at the emergency department of Korea University Ansan Hospital from January 2016 to January 2019. The time to antibiotics was defined as the time in hours from emergency department arrival to the first antibiotic administration. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to estimate the association between time to antibiotics and 7-, 14- and 28-day mortality. RESULTS Of 482 patients enrolled onto this study, 203 (42.1%) of 482 and 312 (64.7%) of 482 were diagnosed with septic shock and high-grade infection respectively. The median time to receipt of antibiotic therapy was 115 minutes. Antibiotics were administered within 3 and 6 hours in 340 (70.4%) of 482 and 450 (93.2%) of 482 patients respectively. Initial appropriate empirical antibiotics were administered in 375 (77.8%) of 482 patients. The time to and appropriateness of the initial antibiotics were not associated with 7-, 14- and 28-day mortality in multivariate analysis. The Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.229, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.093-1.381, p 0.001) and initial lactate levels (aHR 1.128, 95% CI 1.034-1.230, p 0.007), Charlson comorbidity index (aHR 1.115, 95% CI 1.027-1.210, p 0.014), 2-hour lactate level (aHR 1.115, 95% CI 1.027-1.210, p 0.009) and SOFA score (aHR 1.077, 95% CI 1.013-1.144, p 0.018) affected 7-, 14- and 28-day mortality respectively. Subgroup analysis with septic shock, bacteraemia and high-grade infection did not affect mortality rates. CONCLUSIONS Time to receipt of antibiotics may not affect the prognosis of patients with sepsis if a rapid and well-trained resuscitation is combined with appropriate antibiotic administration within a reasonable time.

Abstract
A SrRuO3 thin film has been widely used as a metal electrode in electronic devices based on transition metal oxides, and hence it is important to understand its thermal transport properties to minimize a thermal degradation problem during the device operation. Using the time-domain thermoreflectance measurement technique, we investigate the cross-plane thermal conductivity of the SrRuO3 thin films with a thickness variation from 1 μm to 8 nm. We find that the thermal conductivity is reduced from about 6 W m-1 K-1 for the 1 μm thick film to about 1.2 W m-1 K-1 for the 8 nm thick film, and attribute this behavior to the boundary scattering of thermal carriers which originally have the mean free path of about 20 nm in a bulk state. Also, we observe a clear dip behavior of the thermal conductivity in the intermediate thickness around 30 nm which suggests an existence of a strong scattering source other than the film boundary. We explain this result by considering an additional interfacial scattering at the tetragonal-orthorhombic phase boundary which is formed during the strain relaxation with an increase of the film thickness.

Abstract
Egg products are widely consumed in Korea and continue to be associated with risks of Staphylococcus aureus-induced food poisoning. This prompted the development of predictive mathematical models to understand growth kinetics of S. aureus in egg products in order to improve the production of domestic food items. Egg products were inoculated with S. aureus and observe S. aureus growth. The growth kinetics of S. aureus was used to calculate lag-phase duration (LPD) and maximum specific growth rate (µmax) using Baranyi model as the primary growth model. The secondary models provided predicted values for the temperature changes and were created using the polynomial equation for LPD and a square root model for µmax. In addition, root mean square errors (RMSE) were analyzed to evaluate the suitability of the mathematical models. The developed models demonstrated 0.16-0.27 RMSE, suggesting that models properly represented the actual growth of S. aureus in egg products.

Abstract
δ-Catenin is abundant in the brain and affects its synaptic plasticity. Furthermore, loss of δ-catenin is related to the deficits of learning and memory, mental retardation (cri-du-chat syndrome), and autism. A few studies about δ-catenin deficiency mice were performed. However, the effect of δ-catenin overexpression in the brain has not been investigated as yet. Therefore we generated a δ-catenin overexpressing mouse model. To generate a transgenic mouse model overexpressing δ-catenin in the brain, δ-catenin plasmid having a Thy-1 promotor was microinjected in C57BL/6 mice. Our results showed δ-catenin transgenic mice expressed higher levels of N-cadherin, β-catenin, and p120-catenin than did wild type mice. Furthermore, δ-catenin transgenic mice exhibited better object recognition, better sociability, and lower anxiety than wild type mice. However, both mice groups showed a similar pattern in locomotion tests. Although δ-catenin transgenic mice show similar locomotion, they show improved sociability and reduced anxiety. These characteristics are opposite to the symptoms of autism or mental retardation, which are caused when δ-catenin is deficient. These results suggest that δ-catenin may alleviate symptoms of autism, Alzheimer's disease and mental retardation.

Abstract
In this work, we prepared basalt based nanostructured zeolite 13X by alkali fusion and hydrothermal synthesis process. The sample prepared was characterized using XRD, SEM, and low-temperature nitrogen analysis. The adsorption equilibrium and kinetic characteristics of ammonia nitrogen (NH+₄-N) and phosphate phosphorus (PO3-₄-P) were investigated. It was found that the basalt based nanostructured zeolite 13X showed high adsorption capacities for NH+₄-N (75 mg/g) and PO3-₄-P (25 mg/g) under the experimental conditions used. Our results demonstrate that basalt based zeolite 13X can be a good alternative adsorbent for the simultaneously removal of NH+₄-N and PO3-₄-P from aqueous solution.

Abstract
We report the transfer printing of GaN-based microscale vertical-type light-emitting diodes (μ-VLEDs) using a functional layer and a biomimetic stamp. An oxide-based functional layer is inserted onto the structure of a μ-VLED and used to separate the chip from the μ-VLED wafer by absorbing the pulse of a UV pulse laser during pick-up of the transfer printing process. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based biomimetic stamps have been fabricated to mimic the gecko lizard cilia for improved adhesion and repeatability. The biomimetic stamp has an adhesion force of 25.6 N/cm2, which is 12 times the adhesion of a flat stamp; an adhesion force of 10 N/cm2 or more was maintained after 100,000 repeated adhesion tests. A flexible 10 × 10 prototype array on a polyimide substrate was fabricated, and its bending test results indicated that the strain effect on the forward voltage and the output power was less than 1%. The stable bending test results of the prototype indicate that μ-VLEDs using biomimetic stamps allow the necessary stability for practical transfer printing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common sarcoma arising from the gastrointestinal tract. Data regrading long-term prognosis based on tumor location (stomach vs small intestine) are mixed, so we aimed to analyze their outcomes using a large national oncology database. METHODS The National Cancer Database was queried for cases of stomach and small intestine GIST between the years 2004 and 2014. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and factors related to survival were compared using the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS Of 18 900 total patients, those with small intestine GIST had larger median tumor size (6.2 cm; interquartile range [IQR], 3.8 to 10.0 vs stomach: 5.0 cm; IQR, 3.0 to 9.0; P < 0.001) and a higher incidence of tumors with ≥5 mitoses/50 HPF (29.3% vs stomach: 24.2%; P < 0.001). Unadjusted median overall survival (OS) was longer for patients with stomach GIST (10.3 years) as compared to small intestine GIST (9.4 years) (P = 0.01). After controlling for patient and tumor-related factors, however, OS did not differ between stomach and small intestine GIST (hazard ratio, 1.19; 95% confidence interval, 0.88 to 1.61; P = 0.26). CONCLUSIONS Patients with small intestine GIST more commonly have larger, high mitotic rate tumors, but despite these worse prognostic features, tumor location did not independently impact OS.

Abstract
American Indians (AI) have the highest smoking rates and lowest quit rates of any racial/ethnic group in the U.S. Researchers and community members from the American Indian Health Research and Education Alliance (AIHREA) created and evaluated a culturally-tailored smoking cessation program, All Nations Breath of Life (ANBL) as a recruitment tool for smoking cessation programs among AI. To increase enrollment in ANBL, AI smokers were approached at cultural events and asked to attend a 30-minute educational session (in-person, n= 179; tele-video, n=97). Tele-video (30%) and in-person (9%) session participants were recruited into ANBL. Pre- and post-tests showed participants in both sessions demonstrated increased motivation and confidence to quit smoking but significant differences were present in both sessions (p < 0.0001). Results indicate that theoretically guided and culturally tailored education sessions are viable approaches to educate and recruit underserved populations into programs that promote smoking cessation.

Abstract
A zeolitic 4A type material was successfully prepared from natural basalt rock by applying an alkali fusion process and hydrothermal synthesis. Several methods such as XRD, SEM, EDX, and N2 and CO2 adsorption analysis were used to characterize the synthesized 4A type zeolite. In addition, CO2 adsorption equilibrium capacities for this basalt base zeolite were measured over temperature ranges from 283 to 303 K and pressure ranges from 0.1 to 1500 kPa in a volumetric adsorption apparatus. Then the results were compared to those of commercial zeolite. Moreover, to further investigate the surface energetic heterogeneity of the prepared zeolite, the isosteric heat of adsorption and adsorption energy distribution was determined. We found that basalt based zeolite 4A shows a CO2 adsorption equilibrium capacity of 5.9 mmol g−1 (at 293 K and 1500 kPa) which is much higher than the 3.6 mmol g−1 of the commercial zeolite as its micro-pore surface area, micro-pore volume and surface heterogeneity indicate. A zeolitic 4A type material was successfully prepared from natural basalt rock by applying an alkali fusion process and hydrothermal synthesis.![]()

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is neurodegenerative disease, characterized by the
progressive decline of memory, cognitive functions, and changes in personality.
The major pathological features in postmortem brains are neurofibrillary tangles
and amyloid beta (Aβ) deposits. The majority of AD cases are sporadic and
age-related. Although AD pathogenesis has not been established, aging and
declining mitochondrial function has been associated. Mitochondrial dysfunction
has been observed in AD patients' brains and AD mice models, and the mice with a
genetic defect in mitochondrial complex I showed enhanced Aβ level in
vivo. To elucidate the role of mitochondrial complex I in AD, we
used SH-SY5Y cells transfected with DNA constructs expressing human amyloid
precursor protein (APP) or human Swedish APP mutant (APP-swe). The expression of
APP-swe increased the level of Aβ protein in comparison with control. When
complex I was inhibited by rotenone, the increase of ROS level was remarkably
higher in the cells overexpressing APP-swe compared to control. The number of
dead cell was significantly increased in APP-swe-expressing cells by complex I
inhibition. We suggest that complex I dysfunction accelerate amyloid toxicity
and mitochondrial complex I dysfunction in aging may contribute to the
pathogenesis of sporadic AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the degree of occupational stress and the clinical mental state of dentists. In addition, we investigated the correlation of occupational stress with depression, anxiety, and sleep among dentists in Korea. METHODS A cross-sectional survey on 231 dentists was conducted using the Doctor Job Stress Scale, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), State-Trait Anxiety Index (STAI), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Correlation of occupational stress with mental health was investigated by adjusted multiple regression analysis. RESULTS The scores of CES-D, STAI, and PSQI revealed a significant correlation with the Doctor Job Stress Scale (t = 3.93, P < 0.0001; t = 4.05, P < 0.0001; t = 4.18, P < 0.0001, respectively). In particular, patient factors and clinical responsibility/judgment factors were significantly associated with depression (t = 2.80, P = 0.0056; t = 4.93, P < 0.0001, respectively), anxiety (t = 2.35, P = 0.0195; t = 5.11, P < 0.0001, respectively), and sleep (t = 3.78, P = 0.0002; t = 4.30, P < 0.0001, respectively), whereas work factors were not associated with any mental health state. CONCLUSIONS This study confirms that dentists as professions experience more severe mental states. For successful mental health care among dentists, stress management focusing on interpersonal relationship with patients and responsibility as an expert rather than the intensity of work should be considered.

Abstract
Reduction of mitochondrial complex I activity is one of the major hypotheses for dopaminergic neuron death in Parkinson’s disease. However, reduction of complex I activity in all cells or selectively in dopaminergic neurons via conditional deletion of the Ndufs4 gene, a subunit of the mitochondrial complex I, does not cause dopaminergic neuron death or motor impairment. Here, we investigated the effect of reduced complex I activity on non-motor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease using conditional knockout (cKO) mice in which Ndufs4 was selectively deleted in dopaminergic neurons (Ndufs4 cKO). This conditional deletion of Ndufs4, which reduces complex I activity in dopamine neurons, did not cause a significant loss of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), and there was no loss of dopaminergic neurites in striatum or amygdala. However, Ndufs4 cKO mice had a reduced amount of dopamine in the brain compared to control mice. Furthermore, even though motor behavior were not affected, Ndufs4 cKO mice showed non-motor symptoms experienced by many Parkinson’s disease patients including impaired cognitive function and increased anxiety-like behavior. These data suggest that mitochondrial complex I dysfunction in dopaminergic neurons promotes non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and reduces dopamine content in the absence of dopamine neuron loss.

Abstract
Wine yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae D8) and non-Saccharomyces wine yeasts (Hanseniaspora uvarum S6 and Issatchenkia orientalis KMBL5774) were studied using air-blast drying instead of the conventional drying methods (such as freeze and spray drying). Skim milk—a widely used protective agent—was used and in all strains, the highest viabilities following air-blast drying were obtained using 10% skim milk. Four excipients (wheat flour, nuruk, artichoke powder, and lactomil) were evaluated as protective agents for yeast strains during air-blast drying. Our results showed that 7 g lactomil was the best excipient in terms of drying time, powder form, and the survival rate of the yeast in the final product. Finally, 7 types of sugars were investigated to improve the survival rate of air-blast dried yeast cells: 10% trehalose, 10% sucrose, and 10% glucose had the highest survival rate of 97.54, 92.59, and 79.49% for S. cerevisiae D8, H. uvarum S6, and I. orientalis KMBL5774, respectively. After 3 months of storage, S. cerevisiae D8 and H. uvarum S6 demonstrated good survival rates (making them suitable for use as starters), whereas the survival rate of I. orientalis KMBL5774 decreased considerably compared to the other strains. Air-blast dried S. cerevisiae D8 and H. uvarum S6 showed metabolic activities similar to those of non-dried yeast cells, regardless of the storage period. Air-blast dried I. orientalis KMBL5774 showed a noticeable decrease in its ability to decompose malic acid after 3 months of storage at 4 °C.

Abstract
Given the mode of transmission of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), healthcare workers (HCWs) in contact with MERS patients are expected to be at risk of MERS infections. We evaluated the prevalence of MERS coronavirus (CoV) immunoglobulin (Ig) G in HCWs exposed to MERS patients and calculated the incidence of MERS-affected cases in HCWs. We enrolled HCWs from hospitals where confirmed MERS patients had visited. Serum was collected 4 to 6 weeks after the last contact with a confirmed MERS patient. We performed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to screen for the presence of MERS-CoV IgG and an indirect immunofluorescence test (IIFT) to confirm MERS-CoV IgG. We used a questionnaire to collect information regarding the exposure. We calculated the incidence of MERS-affected cases by dividing the sum of PCR-confirmed and serology-confirmed cases by the number of exposed HCWs in participating hospitals. In total, 1169 HCWs in 31 hospitals had contact with 114 MERS patients, and among the HCWs, 15 were PCR-confirmed MERS cases in study hospitals. Serologic analysis was performed for 737 participants. ELISA was positive in five participants and borderline for seven. IIFT was positive for two (0.3%) of these 12 participants. Among the participants who did not use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), seropositivity was 0.7% (2/294) compared to 0% (0/443) in cases with appropriate PPE use. The incidence of MERS infection in HCWs was 1.5% (17/1169). The seroprevalence of MERS-CoV IgG among HCWs was higher among participants who did not use appropriate PPE.

Abstract
To identify the significant contribution of intermolecular hydrogen bonds of starch molecules to the film structure formation, pH of film-forming solutions was adjusted and also various salts (NaCl, CaCl2 , CaSO4 , and K2 SO4 ) were mixed into the glycerol-plasticized pea starch film. The film made from pH 7 possessed the highest tensile strength-at-break (2 times) and elastic modulus (4 to 15 times) and the lowest elongation-at-break compared with those of the films made from acid and alkali environments. The pH 7 film also has the highest film density and the lowest total soluble matter. At the level of 0.01 to 0.1 M of CaSO4 and 0.1 M of K2 SO4 in a kilogram of starch, the water solubility of the film increased, while chloride salts slightly lowered the solubility. NaCl and CaSO4 reduced water vapor permeability (WVP), while CaCl2 slightly increased WVP at 0.01 and 0.06 M concentrations, and K2 SO4 significantly increased WVP at 0.03 and 0.15 M. Presence of salts increased tensile strength (5 to 14 times than the control films) and elastic modulus (35 to 180 times) of starch film at 0.01 to 0.03 M of CaSO4 and K2 SO4 . Elongation-at-break increased significantly as salt concentration increases to an optimal level. However, when the concentration exceeded above the optimal level, the E of starch films decreased and showed no significant difference from the control film. Overall, the addition of salts modified physical and mechanical properties of pea starch films more than pH adjustment without any salt addition.

Abstract
This research investigates plasma-treated and metal-coated carbon nanowalls (CNWs) for use as counter electrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The CNWs were synthesized on a fluorine-tin-oxide (FTO) glass substrate using the microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system with methane (CH4) gas. The post-plasma treatment was performed on the CNWs with hydrogen (H2) plasma using PECVD, and the CNWs were sputter-coated with metal films using the RF magnetron sputtering system with a four-inch tungsten (W) target. Then the post-plasma-treated and metal-coated CNWs were used as counter electrodes for the fabrication of the DSSCs. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was performed to obtain cross-sectional and planar images of the grown CNWs. The energy conversion efficiencies of the DSSCs manufactured using the post-plasma-treated and metal-layer-coated CNWs as the counter electrodes were measured.

Abstract
In this study, diamond films were prepared using the microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system, which included a DC bias system to enhance the nucleation of the films. The films were synthesized on Si wafers with different ratios of methane (CH4) and hydrogen (H2) gases. We have studied the effects of the CH4-to-H2 ratio on the structural and optical properties of diamond films. The thickness and surface profile of the films were characterized via field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Raman was used to investigate the structural properties of the diamond films. The refractive indexes as functions of the CH4-to-H2 ratio were measured using an ellipsometer. The FE-SEM analysis showed that the 3 and 5 sccm CH4 created diamond films. The Raman analysis indicated that a nanocrystalline diamond film was formed at 3 sccm; a general diamond film, at 5 sccm; and films similar to the a-C:H film, at 7 sccm. The ellipsometer measurement showed that the refractive index of the synthesized diamond film was around 2.42 at 3 sccm. This value decreased as the CH4 volume increased.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to assess the effects of ursodeoxycholic acid composite (URSA-S) on fatigue in patients with elevated liver function tests and/or fatty liver disease. METHODS In this multi-centre randomised double-blinded placebo-controlled trial, 168 adults who were diagnosed with fatigue based on our criteria and had elevated liver function tests (but not > 5 times the normal level) and/or fatty liver on ultrasonography, were randomised to either the placebo or URSA-S administration group. The rate of improvement of checklist individual strength (CIS) using a cut-off of 76 points at the end of the study (8 weeks), the change in fatigue scale [CIS score and visual analogue scale (VAS)] were evaluated. The adverse effects of URSA-S were also recorded. RESULTS The rate of CIS improvement at the end-point was 79.76% and 45.68% in the therapy and placebo groups, respectively (p < 0.05). The fatigue recovery rate of the CIS score and VAS were higher in the therapy (-25.44 ± 18.57, -27.84 ± 2.70) than in the placebo group (-16.59 ± 17.29, -19.46 ± 2.81) (p < 0.05). The difference in fatigue recovery rate between the therapy and placebo groups was significant after 8 weeks. When analysed separately in patients with abnormal liver function tests and fatty liver disease, the fatigue recovery rate of the CIS score and VAS at 8 weeks was higher in the therapy than in the placebo group (p < 0.05). The frequency of adverse events in the therapy group was not significantly higher than that in the placebo group. CONCLUSION URSA-S is effective for alleviating fatigue in patients with liver dysfunction and/or fatty liver. The adverse effects of URSA-S are not significant. Abstract
Titanium as one kind of biomaterials comes in direct contact with the body, making evaluation of biocompatibility an important aspect to biomaterials development. Surface chemistry of titanium plays an important role in osseointegration. Different surface modification alters the surface chemistry and result in different biological response. In this study, three kinds of mixed acid solutions were used to treat Ti specimens to induce Ca-P formation. Following a strong mixed acid activation process, Ca-P coating successfully formed on the Ti surfaces in simulated body fluid. Strong mixed acid increased the roughness of the metal surface, because the porous and rough surface allows better adhesion between Ca-P coatings and substrates. After modification of titanium surface by mixed acidic solution and subsequently H2O2/HCL treatment evaluation of biocompatibility was conducted from hydroxyapatite formation by biomimetic process and cell viability on modified titanium surface. Nano-scale modification of titanium surfaces can alter cellular and tissue responses, which may benefit osseointegration and dental implant therapy. Results from this study indicated that surface treatment methods affect the surface morphology, type of TiO2 layer formed and subsequent apatite deposition and biological responses. The thermo scientific alamarblue cell viability assay reagent is used to quantitatively measure the viability of mammalian cell lines, bacteria and fungi by incorporating a rapid, sensitive and reliable fluorometric/colorimetric growth indicator, without any toxic and side effect to cell line. In addition, mixed acid treatment uses a lower temperature and shorter time period than widely used alkali treatment.

Abstract
Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of cervical midline-splitting French-door laminoplasty with a polyether ether ketone (PEEK) plate. The authors retrospectively analyzed the results of patients with cervical laminoplasty miniplate (MAXPACER®) without bone grafts in multilevel cervical stenosis. Methods Fifteen patients (13 males and 2 females, mean age 50.0 years (range 35-72)) with multilevel cervical stenosis (ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament and cervical spondylotic myelopathy) underwent a combined surgery of midline-splitting French-door laminoplasty with or without mini plate. All 15 patients were followed for at least 12 months (mean follow-up 13.3 months) after surgery, and a retrospective review of the clinical, radiological and surgical data was conducted. Results The radiographic results showed a significant increase over the postoperative period in anterior-posterior diameter (9.4±2.2 cm to 16.2±1.1 cm), open angles in cervical lamina (46.5±16.0° to 77.2±13.1°), and sectional volume of cervical central canal (100.5±0.7 cm2 to 146.5±4.9 cm2) (p<0.001). The sagittal alignment of the cervical spine was well preserved (31.7±10.0° to 31.2±7.6°, p=0.877) during the follow-up period. The clinical results were successful, and there were no significant intraoperative complications except for screw displacement in two cases. The mini plate constructs did not fail during the 12 month follow-up period, and the decompression was maintained. Conclusion Despite the small cohort and short follow-up duration, the present study demonstrated that combined cervical expansive laminoplasty using the mini plate is an effective treatment for multilevel cervical stenosis.

Abstract
Inhibition of mitochondrial complex I activity is hypothesized to be one of the major mechanisms responsible for dopaminergic neuron death in Parkinson's disease. However, loss of complex I activity by systemic deletion of the Ndufs4 gene, one of the subunits comprising complex I, does not cause dopaminergic neuron death in culture. Here, we generated mice with conditional Ndufs4 knockout in dopaminergic neurons (Ndufs4 conditional knockout mice [cKO]) to examine the effect of complex I inhibition on dopaminergic neuron function and survival during aging and on 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) treatment in vivo. Ndufs4 cKO mice did not show enhanced dopaminergic neuron loss in the substantia nigra pars compacta or dopamine-dependent motor deficits over the 24-month life span. These mice were just as susceptible to MPTP as control mice. However, compared with control mice, Ndufs4 cKO mice exhibited an age-dependent reduction of dopamine in the striatum and increased α-synuclein phosphorylation in dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta. We also used an inducible Ndufs4 knockout mouse strain (Ndufs4 inducible knockout) in which Ndufs4 is conditionally deleted in all cells in adult to examine the effect of adult onset, complex I inhibition on MPTP sensitivity of dopaminergic neurons. The Ndufs4 inducible knockout mice exhibited similar sensitivity to MPTP as control littermates. These data suggest that mitochondrial complex I inhibition in dopaminergic neurons does contribute to dopamine loss and the development of α-synuclein pathology. However, it is not sufficient to cause cell-autonomous dopaminergic neuron death during the normal life span of mice. Furthermore, mitochondrial complex I inhibition does not underlie MPTP toxicity in vivo in either cell autonomous or nonautonomous manner. These results provide strong evidence that inhibition of mitochondrial complex I activity is not sufficient to cause dopaminergic neuron death during aging nor does it contribute to dopamine neuron toxicity in the MPTP model of Parkinson's disease. These findings suggest the existence of alternative mechanisms of dopaminergic neuron death independent of mitochondrial complex I inhibition.
