Abstract
BACKGROUND Immune function is associated with clinical outcomes in patients with gastric cancer. This study aimed to explore the prognostic role of peripheral lymphocyte subsets in patients with gastric cancer after curative surgery. METHODS This retrospective study was conducted at a single tertiary referral hospital. We included patients diagnosed with gastric cancer who had undergone surgery and met the inclusion criteria. Clinicopathological characteristics and preoperative peripheral lymphocyte subset data were collected for the analysis. Recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier curve and Cox hazard regression model. We used the Whitney test and Spearman test to analyze the correlation between lymphocyte subsets and clinicopathological characteristics. RESULTS This study included 171 patients with gastric cancer who underwent curative surgery. Multivariate analysis revealed that carcinoembryonic antigen (p < 0.01), carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (p < 0.001), lymph node metastases (p < 0.001), total T-cell count (p = 0.02), B-cell count (p < 0.01), and regulatory T-cell percentage (p < 0.01) were independent predictive factors associated with RFS. CONCLUSIONS Impaired immune function may lead to early recurrence following curative surgery. Our study showed that the characteristics of peripheral lymphocyte subsets (T, B, and Treg cells) were independent predictive factors for recurrence in patients with gastric cancer after surgery.

Abstract
BackgroundPostoperative recurrence is associated with poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer. This study aimed to explore predictive factors contributing to recurrence in patients with stage II/III gastric cancer after laparoscopic D2 gastrectomy.MethodsThis retrospective study was conducted at a single tertiary referral hospital. Patients diagnosed with gastric cancer who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The clinicopathological characteristics of the patients were collected. The patients were divided into recurrence and non-recurrence groups. The predictive factors were investigated using univariate and multivariate analyses.ResultsIn total, 462 patients were included. The incidence of recurrence was 26.4% (122/462) in all patients. The most common recurrence pattern was haematogenous recurrence. In the multivariate analysis, the independent predictive factors for recurrence were serum prealbumin level (p < 0.001), prognostic nutritional index (p = 0.001), carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) (p < 0.001), number of lymph node metastases (p < 0.001), signet-ring cell carcinoma (p = 0.001), tumor deposit (p = 0.001), and no/incomplete adjuvant chemotherapy (p < 0.001).ConclusionsOur findings revealed that nutritional status was an independent predictive factor for recurrence in patients with gastric cancer after D2 gastrectomy. We suggest that patients with risk factors for recurrence receive both nutritional support and intense surveillance.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study is to explore the clinical feasibility of detecting folate receptor-positive circulating tumor cells (FR+ CTCs) for predicting peritoneal metastasis and short-term outcome in gastric cancer patients. Methods This is a prospective, single-center, observational study. We applied ligand-targeted enzyme-linked polymerization method to detect preoperative FR+ CTC levels in peripheral blood. We evaluated the diagnostic value of FR+ CTCs and other biomarkers in predicting peritoneal metastasis. Prognostic factors for recurrence-free survival (RFS) were investigated in univariate and multivariate analyses. Results A total of 132 patients with gastric cancer and 9 patients with benign disease were recruited. Gastric cancer patients had a significantly higher CTC level compared to that of patients with benign disease (p < 0.01). Combined model including CTC level and other biomarkers presented high sensitivity (100%) and moderate specificity (59.3%) in predicting peritoneal metastasis. Univariate analysis revealed that decreased serum prealbumin, decreased peripheral lymphocyte count, FR+ CTCs, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9), and lymph node metastasis were significantly associated with shorter RFS. FR+ CTC level [≥12.6 folate units (FU)/3 ml, hazard ratio (HR) = 6.957, p = 0.005] and CA19-9 (>34 ng/ml, HR = 3.855, p = 0.037) were independent prognostic factors in multivariate analysis. Conclusions Our findings for the first time suggested the diagnostic value of preoperative CTC levels in predicting peritoneal metastasis in gastric cancer. Moreover, the FR+ CTC level could be a novel and promising prognostic factor for the recurrence of gastric cancer in patients who underwent surgery. Abstract
Background Immune function influenced patients’ recovery from major abdominal surgery. The aim of this study is to explore the clinical feasibility of peripheral lymphocyte absolute counts for predicting short-term surgical outcomes in gastric cancer patients after laparoscopic D2 gastrectomy. Methods This is a prospective cohort study from a single tertiary referral hospital. Patients diagnosed with gastric cancer who met the inclusion criteria were included in this study. We collected the demographic and clinicopathological characteristics of included patients. We monitored perioperative dynamics of absolute counts of peripheral lymphocyte subsets. Predictive factors for length of postoperative hospital stay and complications were investigated in univariate and multivariate analyses. Results A total of 137 gastric cancer patients were included. Decreased preoperative absolute counts of peripheral lymphocyte subsets were correlated with advanced clinical stage. In multivariate analysis, independent predictive factors for prolonged hospital stay were age (p=0.04), decreased preoperative B cell counts (p=0.05), decreased preoperative NK cell counts (p=0.05) and complications (p<0.01). For postoperative complication, independent predictive factors were age (p=0.02), operation time (p=0.05), lymphocyte to C-reactive protein ratio (p=0.01) and decreased preoperative B cell counts (p=0.01). Conclusion Our findings for the first time revealed that absolute counts of peripheral lymphocyte subsets are independent predictive factors for surgical outcomes in gastric cancer patients after D2 gastrectomy. We suggested that patients with impaired immune state should receive both preoperative immune modulator and nutritional support.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of water pollutants, water levels and meteorological factors on the Oncomelania hupensis density in Eastern Dongting Lake regions, so as to provide insights into schistosomiasis control. METHODS O. hupensis snails were surveyed using a systematic sampling method in snail-infested marshlands in Eastern Dongting Lake regions from 2007 to 2014, and data pertaining to water pollutants, water levels and meteorological factors were collected. The duration of submergence and the date of the start of submergence were calculated. The snail density and its influencing factors were descriptively analyzed, and a linear mixed model was generated to examine the impacts of variables on the snail density. In addition, smooth curves were fitted to investigate the relationship between snail density and variables. RESULTS The snail density appeared a fluctuation in Eastern Dongting Lake regions during the period from 2007 to 2014, with the highest density on October, 2010 (52.79 snails/0.1 m2) and the lowest density on January 2009 (2.15 snails/0.1 m2). Linear mixed-model analysis showed that permanganate index, total phosphorus and the date of the start of submergence affected the snail density (t = 6.386, -2.920 and -3.892, all P values < 0.01). Smooth curve analysis revealed that the associations of the snail density with the permanganate index and total phosphorus appeared an approximately quadratic curve. After the end of April, the earlier date of the start of submergence resulted in a higher snail density. CONCLUSIONS Permenganate index, total phosphorus and the date of the start of submergence affect the O. hupensis snail density in Eastern Dongting Lake regions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Repeat-positive tests for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in individuals with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were common. We aimed to investigate the rate and risk factors of recurrent positive detection of SARS-CoV-2 in hospitalized individuals with COVID-19. METHODS Oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal swabs (n = 3513) were collected to detect SARS-CoV-2 during the hospitalization. We analysed the recurrent positive rate after consecutive negative results and its relationship to demographic characteristics. RESULTS Among 599 enrolled individuals with COVID-19, the median time for viral RNA shedding was 24 days (interquartile range 19-33 days). The positive rates of RT-PCR were 35.9% (215/599), 17.0% (65/383) and 12.4% (23/185) after one, two and three consecutive negative RT-PCR test results, respectively. Medians of Ct values of initial positive test, rebound positive test after two consecutive negative results, and rebound positive after three consecutive negative results were 28.8, 32.8 and 36.1, respectively. Compared with male patients, females had a significantly higher rate of recurrent positive RT-PCR after three consecutive negative results (18.2%, 18/99, versus 5.8%, 5/86; p 0.013). Older individuals (≥55 years) had a significantly higher rate of recurrent positive RT-PCR after one negative result (42.3%, 165/390, versus 23.9%, 50/209; p < 0.001). Nasopharyngeal swab tests produced a higher positive rate than oropharyngeal swab tests (37.3%, 152/408, versus 35.8%, 1111/3105). CONCLUSION Our study revealed the prevalence and dynamic characteristics of recurrent positive RT-PCR to SARS-CoV-2. We showed that around 17.0% (65/383) of patients tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 after two consecutive negative results. Patients with a rebound positive RT-PCR test had a low viral load. Older age and being female were risk factors for recurrent positive results.

Abstract
A novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic threatens the world. Here, we first studied the dynamics profile of SARS-CoV-2 from 56 recovered patients with COVID-19. We found viral shedding occurred up to 6 weeks after onset of symptoms. A prolonged observation period is necessary for older patients.

Abstract
AIMS Adjuvant chemotherapy is recommended for patients with curatively resected colorectal cancer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of unmet supportive care needs and anxiety on the initiation of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy in colorectal cancer patients. METHODS This is a retrospective study from a single tertiary referral hospital. Patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer who met the inclusion criteria were included. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and modified 34-item Supportive Care Needs Survey (SCNS-SF34) were applied to assess patient's anxiety level and unmet needs. The time intervals between initiation of adjuvant chemotherapy and operation were recorded. Factors associated with delayed initiation of chemotherapy were investigated in univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS A total of 135 patients with colorectal cancer were included. In total, 16.3% (22/135) and 5.2% (7/135) reported symptoms of anxiety and depression. In multivariate analysis, low to moderate income status, postoperative complications, anxiety, and high level of unmet needs are independent risk factors for late initiation of chemotherapy. CONCLUSIONS Our findings showed that psychological problems such as anxiety and high unmet supportive needs are correlated with delayed initiation of adjuvant chemotherapy in colorectal cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, its effect on society is amplified. We aimed to describe the viral detection results across different timepoints throughout the disease course. METHODS A retrospective study of 301 confirmed COVID-19 patients hospitalized at Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, China, were included. Demographic characteristics of the patients were collected. Upper respiratory specimens (throat and/or nasal swabs) were obtained and analyzed by real-time RT-PCR for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Period of viral infection and the contagious stage were analyzed. RESULTS Of 301 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, the median age was 58 years and 51.2 % were male. The median period between symptoms presence and positive SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR results was 16 days (IQR, 10-23, N = 301). The median period between symptoms presence and an effective negative SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR result was 20 days (IQR, 17-24; N = 216). Infected patient ≥65 years old stayed contagious longer (22 days vs 19 days, p = 0.015). Although two consecutive negative results were confirmed in 70 patients, 30 % of them had positive viral test results for the third time. Using specimens from nasal swabs to run the RT-PCR test showed a higher positive rate than using specimens from throat swabs. CONCLUSIONS This large-scale investigation with 1113 RT-PCR test results from 301 COVID-19 patients showed that the average contagious period of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients was 20 days. Longer observation period and more than 2 series of negative viral test are necessary for patients ≥65 years.

Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the risk factors for ≥ grade 3 neutropenia in gastric cancer patients receiving postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Methods: This is a retrospective study from a single tertiary referral hospital. Patients diagnosed with gastric cancer who met the inclusion criteria were included in this study. Baseline and clinicopathological characteristics of the patients were collected. Patients were followed-up for 12 months and the incidence of neutropenia were recorded. Factors associated with neutropenia of chemotherapy in cycle 1 were investigated. Results: A total of 202 patients with gastric cancer were included. All patients received oxaliplatin plus oral capecitabine (CAPEOX) as the adjuvant chemotherapy. The incidence of ≥ grade 3 neutropenia is 11.9% (24/202) in cycle 1 among all patients. In multivariate analysis, independent risk factors for ≥ grade 3 neutropenia were serum prealbumin level (p = 0.041), prognostic nutritional index (PNI) (p = 0.049) and pre-cycle neutrophil count (p = 0.007). Conclusions: Our findings for the first time showed that nutritional parameter as prealbumin level and PNI are independent risk factors for neutropenia in gastric cancer patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. This may provide evidence for further investigation on prophylaxis use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in selected high-risk patients to prevent sever neutropenia in cycle 1 of adjuvant chemotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to develop and validate an effective nomogram to estimate the individual outcome of patients with Gastric neuroendocrine neoplasms (G-NENs). METHODS A total of 260 patients diagnosed with G-NENs at two medical centers were included, with 156 patients allocated as training set and 104 patients as validation. Predictive nomogram was constructed based on multivariate analyses using RMS package in R version. The predictive accuracy and discriminative ability were analyzed by C-index, risk group stratification and calibration curve, which was compared with other predictive systems for G-NENs. RESULTS In multivariate analysis, age, Ki-67, mitoses, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, serum tumor marker and distant metastasis were significantly associated with overall survival. The constructed prognostic nomogram demonstrated a good calibration and discrimination value with 0.884 and 0.852 C-indices in training and validation dataset. Compare to World Health Organization (WHO) grading system (C-indices=0.760 and 0.732) and American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system (C-indices=0.747 and 0.811), the nomogram displayed a better predictive accuracy. CONCLUSIONS The novel prognostic nomogram showed superior predictive value in overall survival of G-NENs. It might be a useful tool for clinicians in estimating individual survival in G-NENs patients.

Abstract
Background The special AT-rich sequence-binding proteins 1 (SATB1) is a major regulator involved in cell differentiation. It has been shown that SATB1 acts as an oncogenic regulator. The clinical and prognostic significance of SATB1 in gastrointestinal cancer remains controversial. The purpose of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to elucidate the impact of SATB1 in gastrointestinal cancer. Results A total of 3174 gastrointestinal cancer patients from 15 studies were included. The correlation between SATB1 expression and OS or RFS was investigated in 12 and 5 studies respectively. The results of meta-analysis showed that SATB1 overexpression is inversely correlated with OS (combined HR: 1.79, p = 0.0003) and RFS (combined HR: 2.46, p < 0.0001). In subgroup analysis, SATB1 expression is significantly correlated with poor prognosis in gastrointestinal cancer in Asian population. SATB1 expression is associated with stage, invasion depth, lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis. Methodology Published studies with data on overall survival (OS) and/or relapse free survival (RFS) and SATB1 expression were searched from Cochrane Library, PubMed and Embase (up to Dec 30, 2016). The outcome measurement is hazard ratio (HR) for OS or RFS related with SATB1 expression. Two reviewers independently screened the literatures, extracted the data and performed meta-analysis using RevMan 5.3.0 software. The combined HRs were calculated by fixed- or random-effect models. Conclusions The results of this meta-analysis suggest that SATB1 overexpression is related to advanced stage, lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis. SATB1 overexpression is a marker indicating poor prognosis in gastrointestinal cancer.

Abstract
Porous NiTi alloys were prepared by microwave sintering using ammonium hydrogen carbonate (NH4HCO3) as the space holder agent to adjust the porosity in the range of 22-62%. The effects of porosities on the microstructure, hardness, compressive strength, bending strength, elastic modulus, phase transformation temperature and superelasticity of the porous NiTi alloys were investigated. The results showed that the porosities and average pore sizes of the porous NiTi alloys increased with increasing the contents of NH4HCO3. The porous NiTi alloys consisted of nearly single NiTi phase, with a very small amount of two secondary phases (Ni3Ti, NiTi2) when the porosities are lower than 50%. The amount of Ni3Ti and NiTi2 phases increased with further increasing of the porosity proportion. The porosities had few effects on the phase transformation temperatures of the porous NiTi alloys. By increasing the porosities, all of the hardness, compressive strength, elastic modulus, bending strength and superelasticity of the porous NiTi alloys decreased. However, the compressive strength and bending strength were higher or close to those of natural bone and the elastic modulus was close to the natural bone. The superelastic recovery strain of the trained porous NiTi alloys could reach between 3.1 and 4.7% at the pre-strain of 5%, even if the porosity was up to 62%. Moreover, partial shape memory effect was observed for all porosity levels under the experiment conditions. Therefore, the microwave sintered porous NiTi alloys could be a promising candidate for bone implant.

Abstract
Cobalt hydroxide (Co(OH)2) has received extensive attention for its exceptional splendid electrical properties as a promising supercapacitor electrode material. Co(OH)2 study so far prefers to crystal instead of amorphous, in spite of amorphous impressive electrochemical properties including the ability to improve the electrochemical efficiency based on the disorder structure. The amorphous Co(OH)2 nanostructures with excellent electrochemical behaviors were successfully synthesized by a simple and green electrochemistry. Our as-prepared Co(OH)2 electrode exhibited ultrahigh capacitance of 1094 F g(-1) and super long cycle life of 95% retention over 8000 cycle numbers at a nominal 100 mV s(-1) scan rate. The united pseudo-capacitive performances of the amorphous Co(OH)2 nanostructures in electrochemical capacitors are totally comparable to those of the crystalline Co(OH)2 nanomaterials. These findings actually open a door to applications of amorphous nanomaterials in the field of energy storage as superior electrochemical pseudocapacitors materials.

Abstract
Using ConA-HRP and RCAI-HRP as probes, the distribution and changes of glycosides in mouse cornea were studied during pre- and postnatal development. Mannose residues were distributed mainly in stroma and endothelium, sialic acid residues in epithelium and galactose residues in both epithelium and stroma. Mannose residues in stroma showed an increased density toward endothelium before and after birth. Sialic acid and galactose residues were concentrated gradually at the corneal epithelial surface in accompanied with the development of cornea. The embryonic day 13 was the starting day to synthesize glycoconjugates from fibroblasts of mouse cornea.

Abstract
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and their changes in early corneal development of Bufo raddei Strauch (from stage 16, neural tube, to stage 25, operculum completely closed) were studied with electron microscopic cytochemical method. Results show that synthesis of GAGs changes from non-sulfated to sulfated, and its content increased gradually with the development of cornea. Hyaluronic acid (HA) in each part of cornea begins to increase gradually from stage 16 to 21 (mouth open stage), with its peak at stage 20 (gill circulation stage) to 21, then decreases. In the mean time, contents of dermatam sulfate (DS), chondroitin sulfate (CS), heparan sulfate (HS) and heparin (Hep) increase gradually. It is considered that HA, HS and collagen may be related to the migration of mesenchymal cells, and HA promotes the expansion and hydration of corneal stroma; sulfated GAGs are correlated with dehydration of cornea, cell density and corneal transparency; DS, CS, HS and Hep deposited among collagen fibrils could adjust their arrangement. All these changes would enhance transparency of cornea.

Abstract
The development of the retinal receptor cell in the young tadpoles (Bufo raddei Strauch), from the stage 20 to the stage 25, was studied by TEM and immunohistochemical method. The morphological differentiation of the photoreceptor cell may be described as follows. The time and the degree of differentiation of the cells in the tadpole retina is asynchronous between central (posterior pole) and peripheral parts of the tadpole retina, namely, they are earlier and higher in the central than in the peripheral. The cells of the outer nuclear layer are undifferentiated at the stage 20. The cells in the posterior part of the retina elongate at the beginning of the stage 21 (Plate I, Fig. 1). This is the first sign of differentiation in the photoreceptor cell. A small hillock-like process forms the inner segment at the scleral pole of the receptor cell. The inner segment is rich in mitochondria, rough-surfaced cytomembrane, free ribosomes, and vesicles. One or two large lipid droplets are also found in the inner segment (Plate I Fig. 2-3). Later on, the connecting structure develops at the tip of the inner segment. The newly formed filaments and the plasma membrane form the outer segment. Its membrane forms some evaginations oriented perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the receptor cell. In this way, disks of the outer segment are formed (Plate I Fig. 4-5). The length of the outer segment gradually increases with the number of disks increasing at the base. At the same time, an axon process of receptor cell, extending vitreal, develops synapses with dendrites of the bipolar cell in the outer plexiform layer. At the beginning (the stage 22), the synaptic structure is an immature form that lacks synaptic ribbons and vesicles (Plate II Fig. 8). Later on, ribbons and vesicles are observed in the further developed synaptic structure (Plate II Fig. 9). The toad rhodopsin was prepared by a method of Dewey et al. (1969) and Papermaster & Dreyer (1974) with slight modification. A specific immune serum against the toad rhodopsin was produced in rabbits. Using the indirect Coon's antibody technique, the localization of the rhodopsin antibody and the time when the antibody was seen in the retina of the early developing tadpoles was traced.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
