Abstract
BACKGROUND Advanced perinatal medicine has decreased the mortality rate of preterm infants. Long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of very-low-birth-weight infants (VLBWIs) remain to be investigated. METHODS Participants were 124 VLBWIs who had in-hospital birth from 2007 to 2015. Perinatal information, developmental or intelligence quotient (DQ/IQ), and neurological comorbidities at ages 3 and 6 years were analyzed. RESULTS Fifty-eight (47%) VLBWIs received neurodevelopmental assessments at ages 3 and 6 years. Among them, 15 (26%) showed DQ/IQ <75 at age 6 years. From age 3 to 6 years, 21 (36%) patients showed a decrease (≤-10), while 5 (9%) showed an increase (≥+10) in DQ/IQ scores. Eight (17%) with autism spectrum disorder or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ASD/ADHD) showed split courses of DQ/IQ, including two with ≤-10 and one with +31 to their scores. On the other hand, all 7 VLBWIs with cerebral palsy showed DQ ≤35 at these ages. Magnetic resonance imaging detected severe brain lesions in 7 (47%) of those with DQ <75 and 1 (18%) with ASD/ADHD. CONCLUSIONS VLBWIs show a broad spectrum of neurodevelopmental outcomes after 6 years. These divergent profiles also indicate that different risks contribute to the development of ASD/ADHD from those of cerebral palsy and epilepsy in VLBWIs. IMPACT Very-low-birth-weight infants (VLBWIs) show divergent neurodevelopmental outcomes from age 3 to 6 years. A deep longitudinal study depicts the dynamic change in neurodevelopmental profiles of VLBWIs from age 3 to 6 years. Perinatal brain injury is associated with developmental delay, cerebral palsy and epilepsy, but not with ASD or ADHD at age 6 years.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Several factors have been reported to be associated with the etiology of cryptorchidism; however, clear evidence regarding the risk factors for cryptorchidism is elusive. In the present study, we evaluated the clinical characteristics of cryptorchidism using the common neonatal intensive-care unit (NICU) database of the National Hospital Organization and explored one of possible factors associated with the development of cryptorchidism. METHODS A total of 7882 male neonates were included in this study. We separated them into two groups: those without cryptorchidism (n = 7852) and those with cryptorchidism (n = 30) at the time of discharge from the NICU. Cryptorchidism was defined as a condition in which the testis was located out of the scrotum on the route of descent at the time of NICU discharge. The associations between cryptorchidism and the maternal, placental, and neonatal information were analyzed. Analyses were performed statistically to compare nominal variables between the groups using Fisher's direct establishment calculation method and logistic regression analyses. RESULTS Univariate analyses showed the placental weight <10% tile (odds ratio 3.31, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.18-8.64), birth height <-2 standard deviations (SD) (odds ratio 3.65, 95% CI 0.92-10.6), birth weight <-2SD (odds ratio 4.06, 95% CI 1.55-9.51), and small for gestational age (odds ratio 3.82, 95% CI 1.46-8.97) were significantly associated with the development of cryptorchidism. Multivariate analyses showed that placental weight <10th percentile (odds ratio 2.86, 95% CI 1.11-7.44) was significantly associated with the development of cryptorchidism. DISCUSSION Although, this study population was limited to infants admitted to the ICU, the data indicated a possible association between low placental weight and the development of cryptorchidism in neonatal boys.

Abstract
We have developed a novel ion source and beam diagnostic system for the production and detection of radioactive francium (Fr) isotopes. The Fr ions are produced using a fusion-evaporation reaction at the RIKEN Nishina Center, Japan. The installation of an infrared heater has enabled a precise and rapid control of the target temperature, and the newly developed diagnostic system allows for a quantitative characterization of the extracted ion beam. With the new system, an analysis of the Fr208-211 isotopes has been performed. Additionally, the flux of Fr210 ions has been estimated as 6.7 × 106 s-1 corresponding to an extraction efficiency of 24.5% and a beam purity of 1.6 × 10-5.

Abstract
Objectives Hypospadias is a congenital disease characterized by morphological abnormalities of the penis, including abnormal urethral opening and penile flexion, which cause urination disorders and/or sexual intercourse difficulty. Various factors have been suggested to cause this anomaly, but evidence concerning risk factors causing this anomaly is insufficient. We evaluated the etiology of hypospadias in Japan using the Common Database of the National Hospitals' Neonatal study group. Study design We retrospectively evaluated 7,865 male neonates registered in the NICU Common Database of the National Hospitals' Neonatal study group. The subjects were divided into two groups by the presence (n = 43) or absence (n = 7,822) of hypospadias. Statistical analyses were performed to compare nominal variables between the groups by Fisher's direct establishment calculation method and logistic regression analyses. Results A univariate analysis showed significant between‐group differences in hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (odds ratio [OR]: 4.02, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.95–7.90), placental weight <−1.28 standard deviation (SD; OR: 5.06, 95% CI: 2.45–10.32), abnormal placental cord insertion (OR: 4.7, 95% CI: 2.62–9.76), birth length <−2SD (OR: 10.56, 95% CI: 5.00–21.1) and birth weight <−2SD (OR: 8.17, 95% CI: 4.17–15.68). A multivariate analysis showed a significant between‐group difference in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (adjusted OR [AOR]: 2.30, 95% CI: 1.09–4.85), abnormal placental cord insertion (AOR: 3.69, 95% CI: 1.83–7.44) and birth length <−2SD (AOR: 3.44, 95% CI: 1.26–9.42). Conclusion Abnormal placental cord insertion, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and birth length may be involved in hypospadias development in male neonates in conjunction with placental dysfunction in early pregnancy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate recent trends in bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and its risk factors among extremely preterm infants. STUDY DESIGN Demographic and clinical data were reviewed for 19 370 infants born at 22-27 weeks of gestation registered in the affiliated hospitals of the Neonatal Research Network of Japan between 2003 and 2016. We investigated the overall survival and prevalence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age and risk factors for developing BPD among the survivors. RESULTS Among 19 370 infants, 2244 (11.6%) died by 36 weeks' postmenstrual age. The mortality rate decreased from 19.0% (99% CI, 15.7%-22.8%) in 2003 to 8.0% (99% CI, 6.2%-10.3%) in 2016. Among 17 126 survivors, BPD developed in 7792 (45.5%) infants, and its proportion significantly increased from 41.4% (99% CI, 36.5%-46.4%) in 2003 to 52.0% (99% CI, 48.2%-55.9%) in 2016. A multivariable analysis of the survivors showed a positive association of BPD with ≥4 weeks' supplemental oxygen or invasive ventilation, birth weight <750 g, small for gestational age, ≥4 weeks' noninvasive positive pressure ventilation, chorioamnionitis, <26 weeks' gestational age, <20 cases per year of center patient volume, or treated patent ductus arteriosus. Although the median duration of invasive ventilation was shortened, the proportions of factors associated adversely with BPD generally showed increasing trends over time. CONCLUSIONS The mortality rate of extremely preterm infants has decreased, but the rate of BPD has increased in survivors between 2003 and 2016. Despite the decreasing duration of invasive ventilation over time, increasing rates of BPD suggest that differences in the patient population or other management strategies influence the development of BPD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aim to clarify whether surgical interventions can contribute to improve the long-term outcomes among individuals with trisomy 18. METHODS We retrospectively studied 69 individuals with trisomy 18 admitted to 4 tertiary neonatal centers between 2003 and 2017. A cohort was divided into two groups: subjects with surgical interventions and conservative treatments. We compared the rates of survival and achieving homecare between the groups. RESULTS Gestational age and birth weight were 37 (27-43) weeks and 1,700 (822-2,546) g, respectively. There were 68 patients with congenital heart disease and 20 patients with digestive disease. Surgical interventions including cardiac and digestive surgery were provided in 41% of individuals. There was no difference in gestational age (p=0.30), birth weight (p=0.07), gender (p=0.30), and fetal diagnosis (p=0.87) between the groups. During the median follow up duration of 51 (2-178) months, overall survival rates in 6, 12 and 60 months were 57%, 43% and 12%, respectively. Survival to hospital discharge occurred in 23 patients, and the rates of achieving homecare in 1, 6, and 12 months are 1%, 18% and 30%, respectively. There was no significant difference in survival rate (p=0.26) but in the rate of achieving home care (p=0.02) between the groups. Cox hazard analysis revealed that prenatal diagnosis (hazard ratio 0.30, 95%CI: 0.13-0.75), cardiac surgery (hazard ratio 2.40, 95%CI:,1.03-5.55), and digestive surgery (hazard ratio 1.20, 95%CI: 1.25-3.90) were related to the rate of achieving homecare. CONCLUSION Aggressive surgical interventions contribute not to the long-term survival but to achieve homecare among individuals with trisomy 18. Abstract
BACKGROUND ZNF597, encoding a zinc-finger protein, is the human-specific maternally expressed imprinted gene located on 16p13.3. The parent-of-origin expression of ZNF597 is regulated by the ZNF597:TSS-DMR, of which only the paternal allele acquires methylation during postimplantation period. Overexpression of ZNF597 may contribute to some of the phenotypes associated with maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 16 (UPD(16)mat), and some patients with UPD(16)mat presenting with Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) phenotype have recently been reported. METHODS A 6-year-old boy presented with prenatal growth restriction, macrocephaly at birth, forehead protrusion in infancy and clinodactyly of the fifth finger. Methylation, expression, microsatellite marker, single nucleotide polymorphism array and trio whole-exome sequencing analyses were conducted. RESULTS Isolated hypomethylation of the ZNF597:TSS-DMR and subsequent loss of imprinting and overexpression of ZNF597 were confirmed in the patient. Epigenetic alterations, such as UPD including UPD(16)mat and other methylation defects, were excluded. Pathogenic sequence or copy number variants affecting his phenotypes were not identified, indicating that primary epimutation occurred postzygotically. CONCLUSION We report the first case of isolated ZNF597 imprinting defect, showing phenotypic overlap with SRS despite not satisfying the clinical SRS criteria. A novel imprinting disorder entity involving the ZNF597 imprinted domain can be speculated.

Abstract
Herein, we report an effective method for the generation of radio-frequency (RF) sidebands in an electro-optic modulator for the simultaneous magneto-optical trapping of two isotopes. This is achieved by switching the RF signals alternately, which suppresses the generation of unwanted frequency signals and improves the laser power per sideband. The generated sidebands are successfully applied to a dual-rubidium-isotope magneto-optical trap (MOT), which results in an increased number of trapped atoms. This simple, flexible, and robust technique can be implemented in experiments that require a large number of atoms in multiple-isotope MOTs and for various applications.

Abstract
We demonstrate frequency offset locking between two laser sources using a waveguide-type electro-optic modulator (EOM) with 10th-order sidebands for magneto-optical trapping of Fr atoms. The frequency locking error signal was successfully obtained by performing delayed self-homodyne detection of the beat signal between the repumping frequency and the 10th-order sideband component of the trapping light. Sweeping the trapping-light and repumping-light frequencies with keeping its frequency difference of 46 GHz was confirmed over 1 GHz by monitoring the Doppler absorption profile of I₂. This technique enables us to search for a resonance frequency of magneto-optical trapping of Fr.

Abstract
Francium is the heaviest species among the alkali elements. Due to its properties, francium is said to be of advantage in measurements of tiny observations, such as atomic parity violation and electric dipole moment. Before executing experiments with francium, it must be produced artificially because it is one of the most unstable elements. We produced francium with the nuclear fusion reaction of an oxygen beam and gold target, ionized the produced francium through a thermal ionization process, and extracted the ion with electrostatic fields. However, the thermal ionization process is known to ionize not only an objective atom but also other atomic species. Therefore, a Wien filter was installed to analyze the composition of the ion beam and purify the beam. This allowed us to improve the beam purity from ∼10(-6) to ∼10(-3).

Abstract
Differential cross sections of isoscalar and isovector spin-M1 (0(+)→1(+)) transitions are measured using high-energy-resolution proton inelastic scattering at E(p)=295 MeV on (24)Mg, (28)Si, (32)S, and (36)Ar at 0°-14°. The squared spin-M1 nuclear transition matrix elements are deduced from the measured differential cross sections by applying empirically determined unit cross sections based on the assumption of isospin symmetry. The ratios of the squared nuclear matrix elements accumulated up to E(x)=16 MeV compared to a shell-model prediction are 1.01(9) for isoscalar and 0.61(6) for isovector spin-M1 transitions, respectively. Thus, no quenching is observed for isoscalar spin-M1 transitions, while the matrix elements for isovector spin-M1 transitions are quenched by an amount comparable with the analogous Gamow-Teller transitions on those target nuclei.

Abstract
We present here the first evidence of photodesorption induced by low-intensity non-resonant light from an yttrium thin foil, which works as a neutralizer for Rb and Fr ions beam. Neutral atoms are suddenly ejected from the metal surface in a pulsed regime upon illumination with a broadband flash light and then released in the free volume of a pyrex cells. Here atoms are captured by a Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT), which is effectively loaded by the photodesorption. Loading times of the order of the flash rise time are measured. Desorption is also obtained in the continuous regime, by exploiting CW visible illumination of the metallic neutralizer surface. We demonstrate that at lower CW light intensities vacuum conditions are not perturbed by the photodesorption and hence the MOT dynamics remains unaffected, while the trap population increases thanks to the incoming desorbed atoms flux. Even with the Y foil at room temperature and hence with no trapped atoms, upon visible illumination, the number of trapped atoms reaches 10(5). The experimental data are then analyzed by means of an analytical rate equation model, which allows the analysis of this phenomenon and its dynamics and allows the determination of critical experimental parameters and the test of the procedure in the framework of radioactive Francium trapping. In this view, together with an extensive investigation of the phenomenon with (85)Rb, the first demonstration of the photodesorption-aided loading of a (210)Fr MOT is shown.

Abstract
The direct 3α decay branch from the 02+ state at Ex=7.65 MeV in 12C, which is known as the Hoyle state, is considered to affect the triple-α reaction rate strongly and to give crucial information on its structure. We have performed a high-precision measurement of the 3α decay from this state using the 12C(12C,3α)12C reaction at E12C=110 MeV. The branching ratio of the direct 3α decay was under the detection limit in the present experiment. By comparing with Monte Carlo simulations for three decay mechanisms as the sequential decay through the ground state of ^{8}Be, the direct decay with equal energies of three α particles, and the direct decay to the phase space uniformly, we have obtained the upper limit of 0.2% on the direct 3α decay.

Abstract
The search for the violation of the fundamental symmetry in a radioactive atom is the promising candidate for precision tests of the standard model and its possible extensions. The subtle signal arising from the symmetry violation is enhanced in heavy atoms, such as a francium (Fr). To realize high precision measurements, a large amount of radioactive isotopes is required. The Fr is produced via a nuclear fusion reaction using a melted gold target with a (18)O primary beam at Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center, Tohoku University. The maximum extraction efficiency of the Fr ion was achieved at approximately 35%. The beam line consists of an electrostatic deflector, three electrostatic quadrupole triplets to the measurement area at 10 m away from the reaction point, and several beam diagnosis systems. We optimized parameters of the beam line.

Abstract
Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) have a unique profile of neoplasms, with a higher incidence of leukemias and a lower incidence of solid tumors than seen in the general population. We recently encountered two cases of infants with DS with retroperitoneal teratoma. After reviewing the literature on teratomas in DS, we found that the incidence of retroperitoneal teratomas was higher and the incidence of sacrococcygeal teratomas was lower in infants with DS than in the general population.

Abstract
A benchmark experiment on (208)Pb shows that polarized proton inelastic scattering at very forward angles including 0° is a powerful tool for high-resolution studies of electric dipole (E1) and spin magnetic dipole (M1) modes in nuclei over a broad excitation energy range to test up-to-date nuclear models. The extracted E1 polarizability leads to a neutron skin thickness r(skin) = 0.156(-0.021)(+0.025) fm in (208)Pb derived within a mean-field model [Phys. Rev. C 81, 051303 (2010)], thereby constraining the symmetry energy and its density dependence relevant to the description of neutron stars.

Abstract
MRE11 and NBS1 function together as components of a MRE11/RAD50/NBS1 protein complex, however deficiency of either protein does not result in the same clinical features. Mutations in the NBN gene underlie Nijmegen breakage syndrome (NBS), a chromosomal instability syndrome characterized by microcephaly, bird-like faces, growth and mental retardation, and cellular radiosensitivity. Additionally, mutations in the MRE11A gene are known to lead to an ataxia-telangiectasia-like disorder (ATLD), a late-onset, slowly progressive variant of ataxia-telangiectasia without microcephaly. Here we describe two unrelated patients with NBS-like severe microcephaly (head circumference -10.2 SD and -12.8 SD) and mutations in the MRE11A gene. Both patients were compound heterozygotes for a truncating or missense mutation and carried a translationally silent mutation. The truncating and missense mutations were assumed to be functionally debilitating. The translationally silent mutation common to both patients had an effect on splicing efficiency resulting in reduced but normal MRE11 protein. Their levels of radiation-induced activation of ATM were higher than those in ATLD cells.

Abstract
The double-differential cross sections for the 48Ca(p,n) and 48Ti(n,p) reactions were measured at 300 MeV. A multipole decomposition technique was applied to the spectra to extract the Gamow-Teller (GT) components. The integrated GT strengths up to an excitation energy of 30 MeV in 48Sc are 15.3+/-2.2 and 2.8+/-0.3 in the (p,n) and (n,p) spectra, respectively. In the (n,p) spectra additional GT strengths were found above 8 MeV where shell models within the fp shell-model space predict almost no GT strengths, suggesting that the present shell-model description of the nuclear matrix element of the two-neutrino double-beta decay is incomplete.

Abstract
Summary Since 2004, significant associations between bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) susceptibility in cattle and frequencies of insertion/deletion (ins/del; indel) polymorphisms within the bovine prion protein gene (PRNP) have been reported. In this study, we investigated the frequencies of indel polymorphisms within two variable sites, a 23-bp indel polymorphism in the promoter region (23indel) and a 12-bp indel polymorphism in intron 1 region (12indel), in the PRNP in 206 Vietnamese dairy cattle and seven Japanese BSE-affected cattle. In Vietnamese dairy cattle, the frequency distributions of del allele and del/del genotypic polymorphisms in the 23indel site, which are thought to be associated with BSE susceptibility, were significantly higher, whereas the frequencies of del allelic and del/del genotypic polymorphisms in the 12indel site, which have been reported to confer BSE susceptibility, were significantly lower. We have provided evidence that Vietnamese dairy cattle have a unique genetic background in the PRNP gene in comparison with cattle or sires previously reported in other countries.

Abstract
Differential cross sections for transitions of known weak strength were measured with the (3He, t) reaction at 420 MeV on targets of 12C, 13C, 18O, 26Mg, 58Ni, 60Ni, 90Zr, 118Sn, 120Sn, and 208Pb. Using these data, it is shown that the proportionalities between strengths and cross sections for this probe follow simple trends as a function of mass number. These trends can be used to confidently determine Gamow-Teller strength distributions in nuclei for which the proportionality cannot be calibrated via beta-decay strengths. Although theoretical calculations in the distorted-wave Born approximation overestimate the data, they allow one to understand the main experimental features and to predict deviations from the simple trends observed in some of the transitions.

Abstract
The Gamow-Teller strength distributions below the particle threshold in 138La and 180Ta, deduced from high-resolution measurements of the (3He,t) reaction at 0 degrees, allow us to evaluate the role of charged-current reactions for the production of these extremely rare nuclides in neutrino-nucleosynthesis models. The analysis suggests that essentially all 138La in the Universe can be made that way. Neutrino nucleosynthesis also contributes significantly to the abundance of 180Ta but the magnitude depends on the unknown branching ratio for population of the long-lived isomer.

Abstract
A new experimental approach to the famous problem of the anomalously slow Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions in the beta decay of the A=14 multiplet is presented. The GT strength distributions to excited states in 14C and 14O were studied in high-resolution (d,2He) and (3He,t) charge-exchange reactions on 14N. No-core shell-model calculations capable of reproducing the suppression of the beta decays predict a selective excitation of Jpi=2+ states. The experimental confirmation represents a validation of the assumptions about the underlying structure of the 14N ground state wave function. However, the fragmentation of the GT strength over three 2+ final states remains a fundamental issue not explained by the present no-core shell model using a 6homega model space, suggesting possibly the need to include cluster structure in these light nuclei in a consistent way.

Abstract
The fine structure of the Gamow-Teller resonance in a medium-heavy nucleus is observed for the first time in a high-resolution 90Zr(3He,t)90Nb experiment at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka. Using a novel wavelet analysis technique, it is possible to extract characteristic energy scales and to quantify their relative importance for the generation of the fine structure. This method combined with the selectivity of the reaction permits an extraction of the level density of 1+ states in 90Nb.

Abstract
Isospin symmetry is expected for the T(z)=+/-1-->0 isobaric analogous transitions in isobars with mass number A, where T(z) is the z component of isospin T. Assuming this symmetry, strengths of analogous Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions within A = 50 isobars were determined from a high energy-resolution study at 0 degrees in combination with the decay Q value and lifetime from the beta decay. This method can be applied to other pf-shell nuclei and can be used to study GT strengths of astrophysical interest.

Abstract
Three precise measurements for elastic pd scattering at 135 MeV/A have been performed with the three different experimental setups. The cross sections are described well by the theoretical predictions based on modern nucleon-nucleon forces combined with three-nucleon forces. Relativistic Faddeev calculations show that relativistic effects are restricted to backward angles. This result supports the two measurements recently reported by RIKEN and contradicts the KVI data.

Abstract
After 50 years of its prediction, the highest-lying [2 0 2]3/2 orbit among the six Nilsson single-particle orbits originating from the sd shells in prolately deformed nuclei and the rotational band on this orbit were identified. The band members were observed in 25Al at excitation energies of 6-7.5 MeV in a high-resolution 25Mg(3He,t) charge-exchange reaction at 0 degrees having a strong selectivity for Gamow-Teller transitions. In the comparison with the analogous M1 transitions in 25Mg, the J(pi)=3/2(+) bandhead state and the excited 5/2(+) and 7/2(+) members were clearly assigned.

Abstract
Spin-dependent lepton-nucleon scattering data have been used to investigate the validity of the concept of quark-hadron duality for the spin asymmetry A1. Longitudinally polarized positrons were scattered off a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target for values of Q2 between 1.2 and 12 GeV2 and values of W2 between 1 and 4 GeV2. The average double-spin asymmetry in the nucleon resonance region is found to agree with that measured in deep-inelastic scattering at the same values of the Bjorken scaling variable x. This finding implies that the description of A1 in terms of quark degrees of freedom is valid also in the nucleon resonance region for values of Q2 above 1.6 GeV2.

Abstract
Single-spin asymmetries for semi-inclusive pion production in deep-inelastic scattering have been measured for the first time. A significant target-spin asymmetry of the distribution in the azimuthal angle straight phi of the pion relative to the lepton scattering plane was formed for pi(+) electroproduction on a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target. The corresponding analyzing power in the sinstraight phi moment of the cross section is 0.022+/-0.005+/-0.003. This result can be interpreted as the effect of terms in the cross section involving chiral-odd spin distribution functions in combination with a chiral-odd fragmentation function that is sensitive to the transverse polarization of the fragmenting quark.
