Abstract
Objective: The intellectualized versions of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA) and the Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE) (i-MoCA/i-MMSE) were developed. The validity of this system was evaluated in a clinical sample through comparing with the manual-based assessments. Methods: A total of 88 patients [aged (66.82±11.37) years, 30 males and 58 females] were enrolled in the outpatient clinic of Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University with complaints of cognitive decline, from February to October 2023. All participants completed manual-based and intellectualized assessments in a randomized order, with an interval of 2 weeks to control for the practice effect. The reliability of the intellectualized version of assessments was evaluated based on the manual-based version using the Concordance correlation coefficient (CCC). The difference between the intellectualized and the manual-based assessments was tested by the Repeated ANCOVA with demographic information controlled. The accuracy of evaluation of the i-MoCA and i-MMSE was analyzed by the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: High concordance was observed between the intellectualized version and the manual-based assessments (CCCMoCA=0.87, CCCMMSE=0.83). Controlling for basic demographic information, there was no significant difference in the scores of the intellectualized version and the manual-based assessments (all P>0.05). The accuracy of i-MoCA in screening patients with cognitive impairment was 94.3% (sensitivity=94.6%, specificity=78.1%), while the accuracy of i-MMSE in screening patients with cognitive impairment was 94.9% (sensitivity=94.9%, specificity=77.6%). In addition, the majority of subdomains measured by the cognitive assessments exhibited high consistency across the intellectualized the manual-based versions (CCCMoCA=0.32-0.78; CCCMMSE=0.54-0.79). Conclusion: Both the i-MoCA and i-MMSE showed high consistency and diagnostic accuracy with the manual-based versions in terms of overall cognitive function and subdomains.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the clinicopathological and molecular genetic features of adult hepatic mesenchymal hamartoma (MHL). Methods: A total of five confirmed adult MHL cases diagnosed at the Pathology Department of the First Medical Center of the People's Liberation Army General Hospital between 2009 and 2022 were collected. Histomorphological observation and immunohistochemical staining were conducted. Gene detection was performed by next-generation sequencing. Results: Among the five cases, four were male and one was female, aged 46-67 years, with an average age of 56.2 years. The maximum diameter was 5.3-13.5cm, and the average diameter was 9.2cm. Tumors were generally cystic, solid, or mixed cystic-solid. Histopathologically, in four out of five cases of MHL, malignant transformation occurred, of which three cases were malignantly transformed into undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma and one case was malignantly transformed into a malignant solitary fibrous tumor. NAB2-STAT6 gene rearrangements were identified. Conclusion: Adult MHL is a rare kind of tumor with malignant potential, and it is difficult to diagnose with preoperative imaging examinations. A fine-needle biopsy is rarely used for diagnosis, but surgical resection of symptomatic or enlarged lesions is recommended to rule out the possibility of malignancy and further diagnosis. Genetic testing results revealed the complex genetic alterations in MHL, and it was found that adult MHL can malignantly transform into malignant solitary fibrous tumors. We believe that genome-wide analysis is necessary to determine the unique molecular characteristics of MHL and identify potential targets for therapeutic intervention.

Abstract
1,3-β-Glucan serves as the primary component of the fungal cell wall and is produced by 1,3-β-glucan synthase located in the plasma membrane. This synthase is a molecular target for antifungal drugs such as echinocandins and the triterpenoid ibrexafungerp. In this study, we present the cryo-electron microscopy structure of Saccharomyces cerevisiae 1,3-β-glucan synthase (Fks1) at 2.47-Å resolution. The structure reveals a central catalytic region adopting a cellulose synthase fold with a cytosolic conserved GT-A-type glycosyltransferase domain and a closed transmembrane channel responsible for glucan transportation. Two extracellular disulfide bonds are found to be crucial for Fks1 enzymatic activity. Through structural comparative analysis with cellulose synthases and structure-guided mutagenesis studies, we gain previously unknown insights into the molecular mechanisms of fungal 1,3-β-glucan synthase.

Abstract
Chitin is one of the most abundant natural biopolymers and serves as a critical structural component of extracellular matrices, including fungal cell walls and insect exoskeletons. As a linear polymer of β-(1,4)-linked N-acetylglucosamine, chitin is synthesized by chitin synthases, which are recognized as targets for antifungal and anti-insect drugs. In this study, we determine seven different cryo-electron microscopy structures of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae chitin synthase in the absence and presence of glycosyl donor, acceptor, product, or peptidyl nucleoside inhibitors. Combined with functional analyses, these structures show how the donor and acceptor substrates bind in the active site, how substrate hydrolysis drives self-priming, how a chitin-conducting transmembrane channel opens, and how peptidyl nucleoside inhibitors inhibit chitin synthase. Our work provides a structural basis for understanding the function and inhibition of chitin synthase.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the feasibility, safety and efficacy of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) in the treatment of lingual thyroglossal duct cyst (LTGDC). Methods: The clinical data of 10 patients with LTGDC treated with TORS in Tongji Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology from May 2017 to November 2020 were analyzed retrospectively,including 6 males and 4 females, aged 5-44 years. The cysts were fully exposed, and resection usually started from the cephalic side of lesions. The range of resection was 3 to 5 mm away from the lesions, and partial hyoid bone was removed if necessary. Intra-operative robotic set-up time,operation time and estimated blood loss,and post-operative local bleeding, dyspnea and recovery time for oral intake were analyzed. SPSS 12.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: The cysts in all 10 patients were successfully resected by TORS with da Vinci Si surgical system. The mean robotic set-up and exposure time, operation time, estimated intraoperative blood loss and recovery time for oral intake were (15.5±7.1) min, (17.6±7.4) min, (8.9±6.4)ml and (2.3±2.2)days, respectively. No patient required tracheostomy intra-or post-operatively, and no symptoms of airway obstruction, postoperative bleeding, pharyngeal fistula, hoarseness and neurological impairment occurred after operation. The patients were followed up for 5 to 47 months, with median follow-up time of 17 months, and no recurrence was observed. Conclusion: TORS is safe and feasible for resection of LTGDC, with rapid recovery and low recurrence rate.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the relationship between the clinical efficacy and the ablated area of endometrium in patients with internal adenomyosis treated with focused ultrasound ablation surgery (FUAS). Methods: From January 2015 to December 2018, 122 patients in Chongqing Haifu Hospital who were diagnosed as internal adenomyosis through history, clinical symptoms and enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and treated with FUAS were enrolled in this study. According to the patient's wishes, patients were given whether to ablate the adenomyotic lesion alone or ablate the adenomyotic lesion and the endometrium that involved in adenomyotic lesions together. The ablated area of adenomyotic lesions and endomitrium were evaluated by post-FUAS enhanced MRI. The adverse events and the changes of dysmenorrhea and menstrual volume at different follow-up points within 24 months were recorded. Results: Among the 122 patients, 32 patients chose to ablate adenomyotic lesion alone, and 90 patients chose to ablate the adenomyotic lesion and the endometrium during FUAS. No major complications such as bowel injury and nerve injury occurred after FUAS. The median non-perfused volume ratio of adenomyotic lesions was 31.7% in the group without endometrial ablation and it was 60.0% in the group with endometrium ablation (P<0.01). The improvement of dysmenorrhea in the group with endometrium ablation was significantly better than the group without endometrial ablation (P<0.01). The average menstrual volume score (3.4±0.9) before FUAS in the group with endometrial ablation was higher than that in the group without endometrial ablation (2.5±0.6; P<0.01), but it decreased significantly after FUAS treatment, reaching the similar menstrual volume score of the group without endometrial ablation (P>0.05). The proportions of abnormal vaginal discharge (34.4%, 31/90) and bleeding (16.7%, 15/90) were significantly higher in the group with endometrium ablation than those in the group without endometrial ablation (all P<0.01). Conclusions: FUAS could be safely and effectively used in the treatment of patients with internal adenomyosis. It seems that ablation of adenomyotic lesion and endometrium together could obtain better therapeutic effects.

Abstract
Resonant scattering of electromagnetic waves is a widely studied phenomenon with a vast range of applications that span completely different fields, from astronomy or meteorology to spectroscopy and optical circuitry. Despite being subject of intensive research for many decades, new fundamental aspects are still being uncovered, in connection with emerging areas, such as metamaterials and metasurfaces or quantum and topological optics, to mention some. In this work, we demonstrate yet one more novel phenomenon arising in the scattered near field of medium sized objects comprising high refractive index materials, which allows the generation of colossal local magnetic fields. In particular, we show that GHz radiation illuminating a high refractive index ceramic sphere creates instant magnetic near-fields comparable to those in neutron stars, opening up a new paradigm for creation of giant magnetic fields on the millimeter's scale.

Objective: To investigate the clinical effect of the radical resection with a proximal incisal edge length of 20-25 mm and 30-35 mm in Siewert type Ⅱ advanced esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma, to shorten the minimum safe distance of the proximal incisal edge to 20-25 mm. Methods: A retrospective cohort study method was used. The clinical data of 166 patients with Siewert type Ⅱ advanced esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma who underwent total gastrectomy from January 2017 to August 2020 in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Heji Hospital Affiliated to Changzhi Medical College were retrospectively collected. According to the proximal incisal edge length, the patients were divided into two groups: the proximal incisal edge length of 20-25 mm group (69 cases) and 30-35 mm group (97 cases). The perioperative conditions and the 6-month follow-up after the operation were compared between the two groups. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in baseline information between the patients in the two groups (P>0.05). The operations of both groups were completed. The intraoperative operation time of the proximal incisal edge length of 20-25 mm group was shorter than that in the proximal incisal edge length of 30-35 mm group ((172±24)and(206±27)min, P<0.001). There were no significant differences in the amount of intraoperative blood loss, the treatment of the diaphragm during the operation and the positive rate of intraoperative freezing of the upper incisal edge between the patients in the two groups (all P>0.05). And there was no significant differences in the first exhaust time, gastric tube removal time, first feeding time and hospital stay after the operation of the two groups (all P>0.05). There was no significant differences in the incidence of anastomotic leakage, anastomotic stenosis, reflux esophagitis and intestinal obstruction after the operation between the patients in the two groups (all P>0.05). And there was no anastomotic leakage case among the 69 cases in the proximal incisal edge length of 20-25 mm group. Postoperative pathological treatment showed no significant differences in the vascular tumor thrombus and nerve infiltration between the two groups (both P>0.05). During the 6-month follow-up, there was no death or tumor recurrence in the two groups, and there was no significant difference in body weight loss at 6 months after the operation between the two groups (P=0.178). Conclusion: When radical resection of Siewert type Ⅱ advanced esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma is performed, it is feasible to shorten the minimum safe distance of the proximal incisal edge to 20-25 mm under the premise of ensuring R0 resection. The operation time is shortened. Due to the shortening the incisal edge distance, the anastomotic tension is decreased, and the incidence of postoperative anastomotic leakage is also reduced.

Abstract
AIMS Acidithiobacillus caldus is an important sulphur-oxidizing bacterium that plays crucial roles in the bioleaching industry. This study aims to analyse the optimal reference gene for real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) under different conditions and investigate the transcription levels of the sigma factor genes in the stress response. METHODS AND RESULTS We selected six housekeeping genes and analysed them via RT-qPCR using two energy resources, under four stress conditions. Three statistical approaches BestKeeper, geNorm, and NormFinder were utilized to determine transcription stability of these reference genes. The gapdH gene was the best internal control gene using elemental sulphur as an energy resource and under heat stress, map was the best internal control gene under pH and osmotic stress, era was the best internal control gene for the K2 S4 O6 energy resource, and rpoC was the best internal control gene under Cu2+ stress. Furthermore, the expressional levels of 11 sigma factors were analysed by RT-qPCR in the stress response. CONCLUSIONS Stable internal control genes for RT-qPCR analysis of A. caldus were determined, and the expression patterns of sigma factor genes of A. caldus were investigated. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The identification of the optimal reference gene and analysis of transcription levels of sigma factors in A. caldus can provide clues for reference gene selection and the study of sigma factor function.

Abstract
Protein phosphatase 4 (PPP4) is a protein phosphatase that, although highly expressed in the testis, currently has an unclear physiological role in this tissue. Here, we show that deletion of PPP4 catalytic subunit gene Ppp4c in the mouse causes male-specific infertility. Loss of PPP4C, when assessed by light microscopy, did not obviously affect many aspects of the morphology of spermatogenesis, including acrosome formation, nuclear condensation and elongation, mitochondrial sheaths arrangement and '9 + 2' flagellar structure assembly. However, the PPP4C mutant had sperm tail bending defects (head-bent-back), low sperm count, poor sperm motility and had cytoplasmic remnants attached to the middle piece of the tail. The cytoplasmic remnants were further investigated by transmission electron microscopy to reveal that a defect in cytoplasm removal appeared to play a significant role in the observed spermiogenesis failure and resulting male infertility. A lack of PPP4 during spermatogenesis causes defects that are reminiscent of oligoasthenoteratospermia (OAT), which is a common cause of male infertility in humans. Like the lack of functional PPP4 in the mouse model, OAT is characterized by abnormal sperm morphology, low sperm count and poor sperm motility. Although the causes of OAT are probably heterogeneous, including mutation of various genes and environmentally induced defects, the detailed molecular mechanism(s) has remained unclear. Our discovery that the PPP4C-deficient mouse model shares features with human OAT might offer a useful model for further studies of this currently poorly understood disorder.

Abstract
Hydrodynamic forces on intertidal flats vary over a range of temporal and spatial scales. These spatiotemporal inhomogeneities have implications for intertidal flat morphodynamics and ecology. We determine whether storm events are capable of altering the long-term morphological evolution of intertidal flats, and unravel the contributions of tidal flow, wind-driven flow, waves, and water depth on inhomogeneities in bed level dynamics (bed level changes over ~days) across these areas. We complement decades of bed level measurements on eight intertidal flats in two estuaries in the Netherlands with an extensive 1-month field campaign on one of those flats. Across this intertidal flat, the hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of a storm event were captured, including the post-storm recovery. We show that individual events can persistently alter the morphological evolution of intertidal flats; magnitudes of some bed level changes are even comparable to years of continuous evolution. The morphological impacts of events are largely controlled by the relative timing of the forcing processes, and not solely by their magnitudes. Spatiotemporal variations in bed level dynamics of intertidal flats are driven by a combination of: (1) the inhomogeneous distributions of the hydrodynamic forcing processes (including the under-explored role of the wind); and (2) the linear proportionality between bed level dynamics and the local bed slope.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate disability status and equity of the middle-aged and old population in China, and to explore the influencing factors contributing to the inequity of disability. METHODS This study was based on data collected from the first wave survey (2007-2010) of World Health Organization Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (SAGE). Concentration index (CI) and concentration curve were calculated to measure the economic-related inequity of disability among the Chinese middle-aged and old people. The CI was further decomposed in which the attributions of social and individual determinants were calculated. RESULTS The mean score of the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Sche-dule (WHODAS) was 7.32 among the Chinese middle-aged and old people, 6.37 for males and 8.21 for females. The CI for the whole participants was -0.190 9, compared with -0.184 4 for the middle-aged and old men and -0.196 1 for the women. After decomposition of the CI, socioeconomic status contributed most to disability inequity among the Chinese middle-aged and old population. Financial status, educational level and work type contributed 66.41%, 16.45% and 13.10% respectively to inequity of disability. Individual lifestyle factors, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption and physical activities, contributed less to inequity of disability compared with social structural determinants. CONCLUSION There was inequity of disability among Chinese middle-aged and old population, and those with better financial status were less likely to suffer from functional disability. Middle-aged and old males were less disabled than females, and had less inequity of disability. Financial status, educational level and work type took the highest contribution to inequity of disability among Chinese middle-aged and old population, suggesting that promoting healthy lifestyles alone cannot effectively reduce the inequity of disability. The government needs to continually strengthen and improve appropriate social and medical protection measures on the basis of the importance it attaches to the health of the middle-aged and old population, and makes reducing health inequities a policy priority. The government should pay attention to the provision of healthcare and other resources in areas where development is relatively lagging and where there is a relative concentration of middle-aged and old population. Meanwhile, there should be more significant support for research on health status and equity among the middle-aged and old population to obtain more evidence for proactive responses to rapid population aging in China and policy development.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the preoperative constitutional varus alignment (CA) inpatients withvarus osteoarthritic knees and coronal femoral lateral bowing (FLB) by comparing the femoral axis of the patients and volunteers' with straight femoral shaft (SFS) and healthy knees, which would be used to guide the selection of valgus correction angle(VCA) of distal femur in total knee anthroplasty (TKA). Methods: From January 2018 to December 2018, 45 nonconsecutive patients (90 knees) with varus osteoarthritic knees and obvious FLB (>5°) received primary TKA,and 50 limbs with healthy knees and SFS in 25 volunteers were studied at Xinqiao Hospital.The medial proximal femoral angle (MPFA) and anatomic lateral distal femoral angle (a-LDFA) were measured and compared between the two groups.The VCA formed by distal femoral mechanical axis (DMA) and distal femoral anatomic axis (DAA) in patients and the VCA based on neutral mechanical axis (NMA) in volunteers were also compared. The Pearson's correlation analysis was performed between the angle of bowing (α) and the VCA based on NMA in patients. The measurement data was compared with t test between the two groups. Results: The results showed that the MPFA and the a-LDFA were not significantly different between the volunteers with SFS and patients with FLB (MPFA:84.9°±3.7° vs 85.6°±1.8° and a-LDFA:81.7°±1.7° vs 81.2°±1.6°, t=1.26, 1.70, both P>0.05). The VCA based on NMA in volunteers with SFS was 5.5°±0.6°(4.5°-7.4°), the preoperative DAA-DMA angle was 5.3°±0.7°(4.3°-7.8°) in patients with FLB, there was no significant difference between the two groups (t=1.70, P=0.09). The angle of bowing (α) was 7.9°±2.9° (6°-16°), the VCA based on NMA was 8.4°±1.5°(5°-10°), there was a significantly positive correlation between VCA and α (R=0.607, P<0.01). Conclusion: There is no significantly proximal or distal femoral deformity in patients with varus osteoarthritic knee and FLB (>5°), the degree of the DMA-DAAangle based on the DMA doesn't change with the increasing angular deformity of the bowing, then the bowing would be reserved if the distal femur is cut based on DMA in TKA and the preoperative CA should be restored successfully.

Abstract
With the joint efforts of countries and global non-state actors, great achievements have been made in the global malaria control programme; however, malaria remains a serious threat to human health. As the global leader for combating malaria, WHO formulated The Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030, and the Global Malaria Programme, under the leadership of WHO, is responsible for implementing 5 key projects to achieve the goal proposed in The Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030. In addition, the Global Fund, the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation also play an important role in global malaria elimination programme. This review describes the currently main non-state actors participating in the global malaria elimination programme, and calls for the enhanced inter-actor coordination and close collaboration with state governments to achieve the great goal of malaria elimination in the world.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the indication, safety and effectiveness of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oropharyngeal cancer based on our preliminary experience. Methods: Twelve patients, including six with tonsil cancer, five with tongue base cancer and one with posterior pharyngeal wall cancer, who underwent TORS with Da Vinci Si surgical system from March 2017 to October 2018 at Tongji Hospital of Huazhong University of Science Technology were respectively analyzed. And the surgical time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative local bleeding, dyspnea, nerve function injury, oral intake time, whether or not to receive chemoradiotherapy were analyzed. Results: All tumors in the 12 patients were en bloc removed by TORS. Surgical time ranged from 25 to 80 min with an average of 34.2 min. The blood loss ranged from 10 ml to 50 ml with an average of 20.8 ml. The recovery time for oral intake ranged from 1 day to 30 days with an average of 8.4 days. No patient underwent tracheostomy after TORS. Also, no patient manifested with airway obstruction, bleeding or nerve injury symptoms after operation. All 12 patients reached pathologically negative surgical margins. The patients were followed up for 4 to 22 months, with a median of 12 months. All patients who combined with more advanced than T3 stage, or more advanced than N2 stage were recommended to oncologist, then, followed with radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy if no relevant contradictions occurred. No local recurrence or distant metastasis case was found. Conclusion: With proper indications, the application of TORS in oropharyngeal cancer is a relatively safe, effective and minimal invasive therapy, which merits more clinical applications.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the status and food sources of daily dietary intake of sodium and potassium among adult inhabitants in Tianjin city, and to compare the consistence of sodium and potassium intake determined by combination of 3 consecutive 24-hour recalls and weighing family condiments (3 d dietary survey method) with 24 h urine sodium and potassium determination. Methods: Multistage cluster sampling method was applied to select 1 955 adult inhabitants from 840 households of 7 districts in Tianjin in 2015. Questionnaire survey was used to obtain basic information, 3 d dietary method was used to obtain dietary information, and 450 subjects was selected by systematic random sampling method for 24 h urine collection and determination of sodium and potassium, and 153 complete 24 h urine samples were selected by the coefficient of urinary creatinine excretion, then the consistence of the determination was compared with 3 d dietary survey method. Results: 1 828 subjects were enrolled in this study with age of (54.6±14.7) years, among which 858 were male (46.9%). The average standard intake of sodium and potassium per people per day were (5 631.2±3 372.1) mg and (1 662.1±750.5) mg, while the average actual daily intake were (5 315.8±3 196.5) mg and (1 560.7±696.8) mg. 98.7% (1 804/1 828) of the subjects had dietary sodium intake exceeding the recommended adequate intake of China residents(1 300-1 500 mg/d), while 78.5% (1 435/1 828) consumed dietary potassium below the recommended adequate intake(2 000 mg/d). The main resource of sodium was condiments, among which cooking salt accounted for 61.5%, soy sauce accounted for 11.2%. Potassium mainly came from cereals (32.4%) and vegetables (18.1%). Compared with the 24 h urine sodium method, 3 d dietary method overestimated the sodium intake with a gap [median (P(25), P(75))] as 401.7 (-1 130.6, 1 939.5) mg/d with statistical difference (P<0.05). The gap [median (P(25)-P(75))] for potassium between the two methods was 79.1 (-577.5, 565.2) mg/d, without statistical difference (P>0.05). Conclusion: The dietary intake of sodium is high while potassium is low among adults inhabitants in Tianjin city. Compared with the 24 h urine sodium and potassium determination, the 3 d dietary method has a good consistency in evaluating the dietary potassium intake level of the population, but overestimates the dietary sodium intake.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of drug-coated balloons (DCB) for de novo large coronary vessels. Methods: One hundred and two patients were retrospectively enrolled in this study, there were 104 lesions with the reference lumen diameter of target vessel more than 2.8 mm and patients were treated with DCB in de novo lesions during May 2015 and July 2017 in our center. Coronary artery angiography and quantitative coronary angiography were performed in 82 (80.4%) patients at follow up period ((8.1±1.7) months post procedure). The endpoints were late lumen loss (LLL) at follow up,and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) including cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI), target lesion revascularization (TLR) and stent or target lesion thrombosis at 12 months post procedure. Results: Ninety-eight lesions were treated with DCB only, 6 (5.9%) bailout drug-eluting stent (DES) were used because of severe coronary dissection, 2 patients (2.0%) received revascularization driven by acute ischemic events during hospitalization. Cutting balloons and NSE balloons were used in 65.4% (68/104) and 26.0% (27/104) lesions. The lesion length was (12.57±3.58) mm and the DCB length was (19.87±4.55) mm. The late lumen loss was (0.01±0.52) mm during angiographic follow up. The TLR rate and overall MACE rate was 3.9% (4/102) and 3.9% (4/102) and there was no death,MI and target lesion thrombosis at 12 months follow up. Conclusion: DCB treatment for de novo large coronary vessels is effective and safe.

Abstract
Objective: To develop a method for determining diphenylmethane diisocyanate in workplace air by HPLC with impregnated filter membrane. Methods: MDI in workplace air reacted with 1- (2-pyridyl) piperazine on impregnated filter membrane to form MDI-urea derivatives, after elution and filtration, it was detected by HPLC-UV. Results: Limit of detection was 0.003 8 μg/ml and limit of quantification was 0.013 μg/ml. Good linearity was obtained in the range of 0.013~2.000 μg/ml (r=0.999 7) . The precision was 3.10%~8.03% (n=6) , while the recovery was 96.3%~101.9%. Asorption capacity of the membrane was 40.8 μg MDI, and could be stored for 14 days in the light-proof environment of 2~8 ℃. Conclusion: The method optimized testing steps for MDI's standard curve, and provided good guidance for determination of MDI in workplace air with impregnated fiter membrane.

Abstract
Sepsis, a systemic inflammatory response syndrome induced by infection, has high rates of morbidity and mortality. Pneumonia is a major cause for sepsis; however, pneumonia complicated by sepsis is a difficult clinical diagnosis. To assess the clinical relevance of serum procalcitonin (PCT) and hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in early diagnosis of pneumonia complicated by sepsis, 220 patients with pneumonia who were admitted to hospital from July 2015 to July 2016 were enrolled in this study. The patients were divided into non-sepsis (N=82), mild sepsis (N=97), severe sepsis (N=23), and septic shock (N=18) groups. The patients were also divided into a survival group (N=186) and a death group (N=34) according to their prognosis at 2 weeks. The PCT and hs-CRP levels and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation-II (APACHE-II) scores of the two groups were evaluated. The PCT level and APACHE-II score showed a progressively increasing tendency in the non-sepsis, mild sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock group; the differences between all pairs of groups were significant (P less than 0.05). The hs-CRP level was significantly lower in the non-sepsis group than in the other groups (P less than 0.05), but differences among the other groups were not significant (P>0.05). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of PCT and hs-CRP for diagnosis of pneumonia complicated by mild and severe sepsis were 0.841 and 0.817, respectively. The optimal cut-off points for pneumonia and sepsis were ≥0.5 ng/mL and ≥55 mg/L, respectively; the sensitivity and specificity were 71.42% and 82.13%, and 75.04% and 53.61%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of diagnosis based on PCT and hs-CRP were 89.32% and 85.68%, respectively. PCT and hs-CRP are used to assess the severity of pneumonia in combination with sepsis in new-borns, but PCT is more strongly related to the severity of sepsis than is hs-CRP. Detection of PCT in combination with hs-CRP facilitates the early diagnosis of pneumonia and sepsis in new-borns, as well as monitoring of the treatment response and prediction of the prognosis.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical features of pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma. Methods: A retrospective review of surgical and pathological databases between 2011 and 2016 at PLA General Hospital was collected and 14 cases of acinar cell carcinoma (ACC) of the pancreas were identified. EnVision immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of Trypsin, bcl-10 and cytokeratin(CK) proteins. Results: The patients included nine cases of pure ACC, 3 cases of mixed acinar ductal carcinoma, 1 case of mixed acinar-neuroendocrine carcinoma and acinar-ductal-neuroendocrine carcinoma, respectively. Tumors involved different anatomic locations of the pancreas, including eight involving the head of pancreas, four in the body and tail, one in the uncinate process and one in a heterotopic pancreas. Two patients had lymph node and liver metastases before surgery. Microscopically, the tumor was hypercellular with less fibroblastic proliferation and tumor cells arranged in acinar or solid pattern. The well differentiated tumor cells showed eosinophilic, granular cytoplasm with single prominent nucleoli, while the poorly differentiated tumor cells tended to grow in solid sheets. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for pan-cytokeratin (14/14), Trypsin (12/14) and bcl-10 (11/14). Stains for CK7 and CK19 were negative (11/14 and 3/4). According to the pTNM staging, there were 7 cases at stageⅠ, 3 at stage ⅡA, 3 at stage Ⅲ and 1 at stage Ⅳ. With average postoperative follow-up of 6-58 months, the median disease-free survival time was 16 months. Conclusions: Pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma is a rare and relatively indolent malignant tumor with characteristic histopathological and immunohistochemical features. Accurate pathological diagnosis plays an important role in patients' treatment and evaluation of prognosis.

Abstract
A drifting model for the resonant frequency and retardation amplitude of a photo-elastic modulator (PEM) in the photo-elastic modulated Fourier transform spectrometer (PEM-FTs) is presented. A multi-parameter broadband-matching driving control method is proposed to improve the thermal stability of the PEM interferometer. The automatically frequency-modulated technology of the driving signal based on digital phase-locked technology is used to track the PEM's changing resonant frequency. Simultaneously the maximum optical-path-difference of a laser's interferogram is measured to adjust the amplitude of the PEM's driving signal so that the spectral resolution is stable. In the experiment, the multi-parameter broadband-matching control method is applied to the driving control system of the PEM-FTs. Control of resonant frequency and retardation amplitude stabilizes the maximum optical-path-difference to approximately 236 μm and results in a spectral resolution of 42 cm-1. This corresponds to a relative error smaller than 2.16% (4.28 standard deviation). The experiment shows that the method can effectively stabilize the spectral resolution of the PEM-FTs.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate whether platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in peripheral blood and body mass index (BMI) can be independent prognostic factors in patients with melanoma. Methods: Clinical date of 140 patients with melanoma in the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Zhengzhou University and Henan Cancer Hospital from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2015 were analyzed retrospectively.Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was performed the optimal cut-off value for PLR.The 140 patients were divided into high PLR group and low PLR group.According to "Guidelines for prevention and control of overweight and obesity in Chinese adults" , the patients were divided into high BMI group and low BMI group.The relationship between PLR, BMI with overall survival (OS), progression free survival (PFS) and disease free survival (DFS) were analyzed.The Kaplan-Meier method and Log rank test was used for univariate survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression model for multivariate analysis. Results: The optimal cut-off value of PLR determined by ROC curve was PLR=120.15, and BMI threshold was 24.Univariate survival analysis showed that PLR, BMI and clinical stage were the factors affecting the OS in patients (P<0.05). The median survival time (MST) was 21 months in the whole group and 17 months in the high PLR group, 34 months in the low PLR group, respectively; the MST in the high and low BMI group were 29 months and 13 months, respectively.The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The effects of PLR and BMI on PFS and DFS were not statistically significant.Cox multivariate analysis showed that PLR, BMI and clinical stage were independent prognostic factors of OS (P<0.05). And BMI was the only independent protective factor for OS, the risk of death decreased by 0.611 times, with each unit increased for BMI.Clinical subgroup analysis showed that PLR also was risk factor to the prognosis of patients with stage Ⅱ, Ⅲ, and Ⅳ (P<0.05). Conclusions: PLR is an independent prognostic risk factor for patients with melanoma, and BMI is an independent protective factor.PLR and BMI are important factors in prognostic evaluation of melanoma.

Abstract
A 45° dual-drive symmetric photoelastic modulator is demonstrated. Two piezoelectric actuators are connected to a symmetric photoelastic crystal at an angle of 45°. When the amplitudes of the stress standing waves induced by the two piezoelectric actuators are equal and the phase difference between the two stress standing waves is π2, the modulation axis performs circular motion with a frequency of half of the photoelastic modulator's resonant frequency, while the retardation remains a constant that is determined at the driving voltage amplitudes. This reveals a new polarization modulation method. We have theoretically analyzed and experimentally observed the new polarization modulation, and the retardation calibration is also reported.

Abstract
Theileria annulata (T. annulata), the causative agent of tropical theileriosis, is a protozoan parasite that also causes lymphoproliferative diseases in cattle. Development of reliable and fast methods are necessary in the epidemiological investigation of T. annulata in ticks and animals. Real-time PCR possesses merits of rapidity, accuracy, reliability, automation and ease of standardization, which is widely used for the detection of blood borne parasites. In this study, species-specific primers and TaqMan probe were designed on the basis of the 18s rRNA gene sequence of T. annulata, and the real-time PCR assay was developed by optimizing the reaction parameter. The performance of real-time PCR was assessed by testing 47 blood samples from cattle and comparing with the results from conventional PCR. The results show that this real-time PCR assay could specifically detect 10 copies DNA of T. annulata, which is 10-fold sensitivity more than conventional PCR. No cross-reactions were observed with Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Trypanosoma evansi and Theileria equi. Of the 47 field samples collected from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China, 36.17% were detected by real-time PCR, and 25.53% were found positive for T. annulata infection by conventional PCR. These results indicated that the real-time PCR assay is a useful approach for detecting T. annulata infections and has potential as an alternative tool for ecological and epidemiological surveillance of ovine theileriosis.

Abstract
Rab family members play important roles in membrane trafficking, cell growth, and differentiation. Almost all components of the cell endomembrane system, the nucleus, and the plasma membrane are closely related to RAB proteins. In this study, we investigated the distribution and functions of three members of the Rab family, Rab3A, Rab27A, and Rab35, in mouse oocyte meiotic maturation and activation. The three Rab family members showed different localization patterns in oocytes. Microinjection of siRNA, antibody injection, or inhibitor treatment showed that (1) Rab3A regulates peripheral spindle and cortical granule (CG) migration, polarity establishment, and asymmetric division; (2) Rab27A regulates CG exocytosis following MII-stage oocyte activation; and (3) Rab35 plays an important role in spindle organization and morphology maintenance, and thus meiotic nuclear maturation. These results show that Rab proteins play important roles in mouse oocyte meiotic maturation and activation and that different members exert different distinct functions.

Abstract
A novel nitrogen-doped graphene (NG)/nickle oxide (NiO) nanocomposite was synthesized by a facile two-step method, where NiO particles were dispersed on the surface of NG. The NG/NiO nanocomposite is characterized by using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties of NG/NiO nanocomposite have been studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Compared with the nitrogen-doped graphene, the electrode prepared by NG/NiO nanocomposite has a mass specific capacitance of 342 F g(-1) at scan rate of 5 mV s(-1), which is much higher than that of nitrogen-doped graphene (NG). The galvanostatic charge/discharge results show this new kind nanocomposite has high specific capacitance with 320 F g(-1) in the range of 0.1-0.5 V at a current density of 1 A g(-1). The enhanced supercapacitive performance of NG/NiO nanocomposite suggesting its promising potential in supercapacitors.

Abstract
Linear ion traps are important tools in many applications, particularly in mass spectrum analyzers and frequency standards. Here a novel design of a microwave feed integrated into one electrode of a linear quadrupole ion trap is demonstrated for the application of a microwave frequency standard based on cadmium ions. The mechanical structure of the microwave feed is compact and easy to build. The ion trap integrated with this microwave feed is successfully applied to measure the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of (113)Cd(+), thus demonstrating the practicality and reliability of the microwave feed.

Abstract
Renal regeneration approaches offer great potential for the treatment of chronic kidney disease, but their availability remains limited by the clinical challenges they pose. In the present study, we used continuous detergent perfusion to generate decellularized (DC) rat kidney scaffolds. The scaffolds retained intact vascular trees and overall architecture, along with significant concentrations of various cytokines, but lost all cellular components. To evaluate its potential in renal function recovery, DC scaffold tissue was grafted onto partially nephrectomized rat kidneys. An increase of renal size was found, and regenerated renal parenchyma cells were observed in the repair area containing the grafted scaffold. In addition, the number of nestin-positive renal progenitor cells was markedly higher in scaffold-grafted kidneys compared to controls. Moreover, radionuclide scan analysis showed significant recovery of renal functions at 6 weeks post-implantation. Our results provide further evidence to show that DC kidney scaffolds could be used to promote renal recovery in the treatment of chronic kidney disease.

Abstract
We have demonstrated a method for laser frequency stability transfer using a fiber-based Young's interferometer. An 858 nm external cavity diode laser is stabilized to within 1e-8 from 10 s to 4000 s, referenced to a Rubidium stabilized 780 nm DBR diode laser using the interferometer as a frequency-stability-transferring link. The system is simple to build and can link any two laser wavelengths within the fiber operating range.

Abstract
The grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (Valenciennes), is one of the most extensively aquacultured freshwater fish in China. However, because of the lack of effective control measures and the high-density culture environment, considerable economic losses are caused by infection of C. idella with the parasitic ciliate, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. The major histocompatibility (MH) DAB gene belongs to antigen-presented genes in the class II genomic region, which is associated with parasite resistance. To understand the relationship of the DAB gene with I. multifiliis infection in grass carp, the expression profiles of MH II-DAB were studied in tissues using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The results showed that expression of the MH II-DAB gene was up-regulated in head kidney after I. multifiliis infection, and the expression peak appeared earlier in the study (case) group than in the control group. The obvious up-regulation peak of MH II-DAB gene was found at days 2 and 4 in skin; at 12 h to day 4 in spleen; at 12 h and days 1 and 6 in gill; and at day 10 in blood, whereas the MH II-DAB gene was down-regulated in liver and intestines after I. multifiliis infection. These results have implications for better understanding C. idella resistance to I. multifiliis infection.

Abstract
We have developed a microwave frequency standard based on the 15.2 GHz ground-stated hyperfine transition of (113)C(+) ions. Using a laser-cooled ion cloud trapped in a linear quadrupole Paul trap, the clock transition frequency is measured to be 15 199 862 855.0125(87) Hz, with an accuracy at the 10(-13) level. The main errors are from the microwave frequency reference used in the experiment. The precision is improved by nearly two orders of magnitude than that reported before.

Abstract
An in vitro fermentation was conducted to determine the effects of hainanmycin on protein degradation and populations of ammonia-producing bacteria. The substrates (DM basis) for in vitro fermentation consisted of alfalfa hay (31.7%), Chinese wild rye grass hay (28.3%), ground corn grain (24.5%), soybean meal (15.5%) with a forage: concentrate of 60:40. Treatments were the control (no additive) and hainanmycin supplemented at 0.1 (H0.1), 1 (H1), 10 (H10), and 100 mg/kg (H100) of the substrates. After 24 h of fermentation, the highest addition level of hainanmycin decreased total VFA concentration and increased the final pH. The high addition level of hainanmycin (H1, H10, and H100) reduced (p<0.05) branched-chain VFA concentration, the molar proportion of acetate and butyrate, and ratio of acetate to propionate; and increased the molar proportion of propionate, except that for H1 the in molar proportion of acetate and isobutyrate was not changed (p>0.05). After 24 h of fermentation, H10 and H100 increased (p<0.05) concentrations of peptide nitrogen and AA nitrogen and proteinase activity, and decreased (p<0.05) NH3-N concentration and deaminase activity compared with control. Peptidase activitives were not affected by hainanmycin. Hainanmycin supplementation only inhibited the growth of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens, which is one of the species of low deaminative activity. Hainanmycin supplementation also decreased (p<0.05) relative population sizes of hyper-ammonia-producing species, except for H0.1 on Clostridium aminophilum. It was concluded that dietary supplementation with hainanmycin could improve ruminal fermentation and modify protein degradation by changing population size of ammonia-producing bacteria in vitro; and the addition level of 10 mg/kg appeared to achieve the best results.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate pathological changes of the portal vein (PV) and the effects on main branches of the hepatic PV during HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) sonication when liver tissue adjacent to the main branches of hepatic PV was ablated. Normal liver tissue at 0mm, 5mm, 10mm away from the hepatic portal vein in 50 healthy goats was ablated with magnetic resonance image-guided HIFU (MRgHIFU). MRI showed a non-perfusion region at the target area but did not show any significant changes of the PV immediately after HIFU. The histological examination 1 day after HIFU showed coagulative necrosis at the target area, revealed deep-dyed swelling collagen (CS) fibers and vessel wall fracture (VWF) in the PV adjacent to the target area; however, no CS or VWF was observed in the PV 1 week after HIFU ablation. The energy required to ablate the foci at 0mm was 21% more than that at 10mm from the PV (p<0.05); the energy needed to ablate foci 5mm away from the PV was 10% more than that at 10mm from the PV (p<0.05). We concluded that minor injury of the hepatic portal vein may occur when ablating the adjacent liver tissue, and the acoustic energy deposition is related to the distance to the portal vein.

Abstract
To reduce the driving voltage, and hence enhance the power efficiency of OLEDs, the mobility of the various carrier transport layers needs to be increased. Buckminsterfullerene (C(60)) has been proposed to be one possible alternative conductive electron transport layer (ETL) to enhance the power efficiency in OLEDs, due to its high conductivity and the formation of an ohmic contact with the LiF/Al cathode. The optical properties of a nanocomposite of C(60) with LiF (C(60):LiF) and its potential as an efficient ETL in OLEDs was studied. With proper optimization of the device structure, a more than 50% improvement in the power efficiency, without sacrificing the high EQE, in optimized fluorescent OLEDs with the use of C(60):LiF nanocomposite ETL was achieved.

Abstract
The present experiment aimed to evaluate the effect of HMBi on the production performance and metabolism in dairy cows. Thirty multiparous Holstein dairy cows under similar conditions were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments; i) Control, a basal diet; ii) T1, a basal diet plus HMBi (0 g prepartum and 18 g postpartum); and iii) T2, a basal diet plus HMBi (10 g prepartum and 18 g postpartum). Treatments were initiated 21 d before expected calving and continued through 91 d postpartum. HMBi was top-dressed onto the total mixed ration of each cow. Treatments did not affect dry matter intake, plasma urea nitrogen, peak milk yield, days to peak milk yield, nonesterified fatty acid, glutamate pyruvate transaminase, glutamic oxalaetic transaminase, milk fat content, milk protein content, milk lactose content, and milk solid non-fat content. The milk composition yields were increased by the HMBi-supplemented treatment. The T1 and T2 treatments increased the yields of 4% fat-corrected milk yield, milk fat, milk protein, and milk lactose compared with the control. Although there was no difference in the milk composition of the control and T2-treated cows, the T2-treated cows exhibited higher milk fat yield (increased by 74 g/d), lower milk urea nitrogen (reduced by 3.41%), and plasma β-hydroxy butyrate than the control cows. The results indicate that HMBi supplementation to diet has beneficial effects, and that there is no difference between supplementation at prepartum and starting only at parturition.

Abstract
Synthetic wastewater was treated using a novel system integrating the reversed anoxic/anaerobic/oxic (RAAO) process, a micro-electrolysis (ME) bed and complex biological media. The system showed superior chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal rates. Performance of the system was optimised by considering the influences of three major controlling factors, namely, hydraulic retention time (HRT), organic loading rate (OLR) and mixed liquor recirculation (MLR). TP removal efficiencies were 69, 87, 87 and 83% under the HRTs of 4, 8, 12 and 16 h. In contrast, HRT had negligible effects on the COD and TN removal efficiencies. COD, TN and TP removal efficiencies from synthetic wastewater were 95, 63 and 87%, respectively, at an OLR of 1.9 g/(L·d). The concentrations of COD, TN and TP in the effluent were less than 50, 15 and 1 mg/L, respectively, at the controlled MLR range of 75-100%. In this system, organics, TN and TP were primarily removed from anoxic tank regardless of the operational conditions.

Abstract
Elliptical nano-bumps on nickel-phosphorus coated aluminium (NiP/Al) hard disks were fabricated by a laser texturing system (maximum power 8 W, maximum frequency 300 kHz). By carefully selecting the level of laser power attenuation and defocus offset distance, bump height can be controlled below 6 nm and down to the sub-nanometre scale. This type of laser-induced texture (elliptical shape) on a disk surface is expected to provide better control of the stiction force along with the smallest separation distance between the head slider and the disk. Quantitative modelling based on the classical Hertzian theory for elliptic contacts has been carried out with the purpose of predicting the stiction behaviour of the presented elliptical shaped sub-10 nm bumps. It has been found that an elliptical shape not only reduces the overall stiction performance of the laser texturing zone (LZT) compared to the conventional circular shape but also extends the occurrence of the 'stiction wall' towards the sub-10 nm regime for ultra-low-glide applications.

Abstract
The feasibility of calibrating the binding energy scale for photoelectron spectroscopy using a single sample without sputter cleaning was investigated. By measuring the Fermi level of a Au film with both monochromatic Al Kα (hν = 1486.7 eV) and He Iα (hν = 21.22 eV), the binding energy scale was simply and accurately calibrated. This method is found to yield binding energy values for the Cu 2p(3/2), Ag 3d(5/2), and Au 4f(7/2) peaks that agree with the standard tabulated values defined in International Organization for Standardization 15472 to within ±0.02 eV.

Abstract
The Fermi level has historically been assumed to be the only energy-level from which carriers are injected at metal/semiconductor interfaces. In traditional semiconductor device physics, this approximation is reasonable as the thermal distribution of delocalized states in the semiconductor tends to dominate device characteristics. However, in the case of organic semiconductors the weak intermolecular interactions results in highly localized electronic states, such that the thermal distribution of carriers in the metal may also influence device characteristics. In this work we demonstrate that the Fermi-Dirac distribution of carriers in the metal has a much more significant impact on charge injection at metal/organic interfaces than has previously been assumed. An injection model which includes the effect of the Fermi-Dirac electron distribution was proposed. This model has been tested against experimental data and was found to provide a better physical description of charge injection. This finding indicates that the thermal distribution of electronic states in the metal should, in general, be considered in the study of metal/organic interfaces.

Abstract
Described herein is a transfer-arm evaporator cell (TAE-cell), which allows for rapid loading of materials into vacuum for low-temperature sublimation deposition of thin films. This design can be incorporated with an existing analysis system for convenient in situ thin film characterization. This evaporator is especially well suited for photoemission characterization of organic semiconductor interfaces. Photoemission is one of the most important techniques for characterizing such, however, it generally requires in situ sample preparation. The ease with which materials can be loaded and evaporated with this design increases the throughput of in situ photoemission characterization, and broadens the research scope of the technique. Here, we describe the design, operation, and performance of the TAE-cell.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Fibrosis, a pathological accumulation of collagen in tissues, represents a major global disease burden. Effective characterization of potential antifibrotic drugs has been constrained by poor formation of the extracellular matrix in vitro, due to tardy procollagen processing by collagen C-proteinase/BMP-1, and difficulties in relating this matrix to cell numbers in experimental samples. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The Scar-in-a-Jar model provided, in vitro, the complete biosynthetic cascade of collagen matrix formation including complete conversion of procollagen by C-proteinase/BMP-1, its subsequent extracellular deposition and lysyl oxidase-mediated cross-linking, achieved by applying the biophysical principle of macromolecular 'crowding'. Collagen matrix deposition, velocity and morphology can be controlled using negatively charged 'crowders' in a rapid (2 days) mode or a mixture of neutral 'crowders' in an accelerated (6 days) mode. Combined with quantitative optical bioimaging, this novel system allows for in situ assessment of the area of deposited collagen(s) per cell. KEY RESULTS Optical evaluation of known and novel antifibrotic compounds effective at the epigenetic, post-transcriptional/translational/secretional level correlated excellently with corresponding biochemical analyses. Focusing on quantitation of deposited collagen, the Scar-in-a-Jar was most effective in assessing novel inhibitors that may have multiple targets, such as microRNA29c, found to be a promising antifibrotic agent. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS This novel screening system supersedes current in vitro fibroplasia models, as a fast, quantitative and non-destructive technique. This method distinguishes a reduction in collagen I deposition, excluding collagen cross-linking, and allows full evaluation of inhibitors of C-proteinase/BMP-1 and other matrix metalloproteinases.

Abstract
Determination of the injection barrier height for holes or electrons at metal/organic interfaces is essential to understanding the device physics of organic electronics. Due to the disordered molecular packing of organic semiconductors, careful consideration is required in the design of both the device structure and the experimental measurement technique used to extract the barrier height. We report a methodology for extracting the injection barrier height at metal/organic interfaces from temperature dependent current-voltage measurements. This methodology includes the design of single carrier devices with specific consideration of the intrinsic properties of organic semiconductors, as well as the design of a variable temperature cryostat suited to the measurement of organic electronic device architectures. Experimental results for single carrier hole-only devices using two commonly studied hole transport materials, namely N,N(')-diphenyl-N,N(')-bis-(1-naphthyl)-1-1(')-biphenyl-4,4(')-diamine (alpha-NPD) and 4,4('),4(")-tris(N-3- methylphenyl-N-phenyl-amino)triphenylamine (m-MTDATA) are also presented as examples.

Abstract
Based on medium-tuned optical field enhancement effect around a self-assembled particle-lens array (PLA) irradiated with a femtosecond (fs) laser source, we demonstrated that high-precision periodical array of micro/nano-structures can be readily fabricated on glass surface or inside glass in large areas in parallel without any cracks or debris. The technique has potential for rapid fabrication of three-dimensional structures in multiple layers inside glass.

Abstract
Amorphous Si/SiO(2) multilayers (MLs) on silicon wafers were fabricated in a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system via cycles of silicon deposition and plasma oxidation. The structural and optical properties of the MLs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering and room temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Intermediate phase silicon structure (IPSS), which is intermediate in order between the continuous random network amorphous phase and the well ordered crystalline phase, was found in the a-Si sublayers around the crystallization onset temperature. Red-near infrared wavelength region PL from recombination via structural defects inside the IPSS and Si = O at the surface of both nanocrystal Si (nc-Si) and IPSS was observed. In the samples with IPSS and nc-Si coexisting, the IPSS was found to be about five times more efficient as regards PL than nc-Si.

Abstract
A rapid, sensitive and specific liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometric (LC-ESI-MS) method has been developed for the quantification of trimetazidine in human plasma. The analyte and the internal standard (pseudoephedrine) were extracted from plasma samples with n-hexane-dichloromethane (1:1, v/v) and analyzed on a C18 column. The chromatographic separation was achieved within 3.5 min using the mobile phase consisting of methanol/0.05% formic acid (80:20, v/v) and the flow rate was 1.0 ml/min. Ion signals m/z 181.0 and 148.0 were measured in the positive mode for trimetazidine and pseudoephedrine, respectively. The calibration curves were linear within the range of 0.4 to approximately 120 ng/ml. The lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) was 0.4 ng/ml with 0.5 ml plasma sample. The intra- and inter-day precisions were lower than 12% in terms of relative standard deviation (RSD). The inter-day relative error (RE) as determined from quality control samples (QCs), ranged from -1.4% to 3.3%. This validated method was successfully applied to the bioequivalent evaluation of two brands of trimetazidine tablets in 20 healthy volunteers.
