Evaluating and contextualizing the efficacy of portable HEPA filtration units in small exam rooms

Background

Ambulatory clinics attend to COVID-19 patients, often in spaces with less than ideal ventilation. Testing and treatments can often include aerosol-generating procedures. Portable high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration units have been used to remove airborne contaminants in these areas.

Methods

A particle counter was used to evaluate the effectiveness of portable HEPA filtration units when a proxy airborne contaminant (powder) was actuated into the air. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Airborne Contaminant Removal table served as a basis for initial particle readings at 6 minutes.

Results

Percent decrease was calculated post powder actuation at the 6-minute and 12-minute mark. There was a statistically significant decrease in smaller particles at the 6-minute and 12-minute mark when the HEPA filtration units were used.

Conclusion

As an adjunct infection control intervention, portable HEPA filtration units can make outpatient exam rooms safer for patients and staff by decreasing cumulative airborne particles.

Impact of the treatment of NH3 emissions from pig farms on greenhouse gas emissions. Quantitative assessment from the literature data

In order to limit ammonia (NH₃) emissions from pig farms, various air cleaning solutions are widely applied. However, the literature data report that these systems (chemical scrubbers, bioscrubbers and biofilters) can be both inefficient and promote nitrous oxide (N₂O) production. As air cleaning technologies should not contribute to secondary trace gases that may have a stronger environmental impact than the raw gas compounds themselves, the objective of this study was to quantify the effect of NH₃ treatment in pig farms on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. GHGs (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) emitted at the outlet of three different cleaning systems ("chemical scrubber", "bioscrubber" and "bioscrubber + denitrification step") were assessed and compared with the emissions generated by the exhaust air with "no treatment". The calculations show that the chemical scrubber has no effect whereas biological treatments can increase GHG emissions. The use of bioscrubbers alone for NH₃ removal can remain acceptable provided that less than 3% of the NH₃ entering the apparatus is converted into N₂O. In such cases, a maximum increase of 1.9% in GHG emissions could be obtained. Conversely, the addition of a denitrification step to a bioscrubber must be avoided. Increases in overall GHG emissions of up to 25.8% were calculated but more significant increases could occur. With regard to GHG emissions, it is concluded that the use of a chemical scrubber is more suitable than a bioscrubber to treat exhaust air from pig farms.

Capture efficiency of portable high-efficiency air filtration devices used during building construction activities

The portable high-efficiency air filtration (PHEAF) device is used to control particulate matter (PM) generated from construction-type activities occurring within the built environment. Examples of activities where PHEAF devices are mobilized include building renovation, asbestos abatement, remediation of microbial contamination, and lead-based paint projects. Designed for use on short-term, temporary projects the PHEAF device captures airborne PM using a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. This study sought to evaluate the capture efficiency of the PHEAF device in a field setting. An aerosol generator and photometer were used to measure particle penetration through 85 PHEAF devices. Average overall capture efficiency ranged from 41.78% to ≥99.97% with more than 88% of the tests failing to achieve 99.97% capture efficiency. Approximately 73% of the PHEAF device sample population failed to demonstrate HEPA performance criteria during any test round. A higher occurrence of PM concentrations measured around the perimeter of the filter suggested the presence of bypass leakage. While PHEAF devices were effective in capturing a significant quantity of aerosol test agent, these findings suggest that routine testing of the PHEAF device should be conducted to validate performance.

Continuous measurements of ammonia, nitrous oxide and methane from air scrubbers at pig housing facilities

Ammonia, largely emitted by agriculture, involves a great risk for eutrophication and acidification leading to biodiversity loss. Air scrubbers are widely applied to reduce ammonia emission from pig and poultry housing facilities, but it is not always clear whether their performance meets the requirements. Besides, there is a growing international concern for the livestock related greenhouse gases methane and nitrous oxide but hardly any data concerning their fate in air scrubbers are available. This contribution presents the results from measurement campaigns conducted at a chemical, a biological and a two-stage biological air scrubber installed at pig housing facilities in Flanders. Ammonia, nitrous oxide and methane at the inlet and outlet of the air scrubbers were monitored on-line during one week using a photoacoustic gas monitor, which allowed to investigate diurnal fluctuations in the removal performance of air scrubbers. Additionally, the homogeneity of the air scrubbers, normally checked by gas detection tubes, was investigated in more detail using the continuous data. The biological air scrubber with extra nitrification tank performed well in terms of ammonia removal (86 ± 6%), while the two-stage air scrubber suffered from nitrifying bacteria inhibition. In the chemical air scrubber the pH was not kept constant, lowering the ammonia removal efficiency. A lower ammonia removal efficiency was found during the day, when the ventilation rate was the highest. Nitrous oxide was produced inside the biological and two-stage scrubber, resulting in an increased outlet concentration of more than 200%. Methane could not be removed in the different air scrubbers because of its low water solubility.
