Falling charge in a gravitational field and radiation reaction

The Lorentz-Dirac equation is formulated and studied in flat Minkowski spacetime. A concise, novel derivation of the equation is presented. The problem is then enlarged to study radiation damping of an electron moving through a gravitational field. The equation of motion is obtained for this case as well. It is suggested the study of the problem might motivate experiments which could shed light on the recent work related to the emergence of space-time and its structure by means of quantum effects such as quantum entanglement.

Radiofrequency antenna concepts for human cardiac MR at 14.0 T

OBJECTIVE

To examine the feasibility of human cardiac MR (CMR) at 14.0 T using high-density radiofrequency (RF) dipole transceiver arrays in conjunction with static and dynamic parallel transmission (pTx).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

RF arrays comprised of self-grounded bow-tie (SGBT) antennas, bow-tie (BT) antennas, or fractionated dipole (FD) antennas were used in this simulation study. Static and dynamic pTx were applied to enhance transmission field (B₁⁺) uniformity and efficiency in the heart of the human voxel model. B₁⁺ distribution and maximum specific absorption rate averaged over 10 g tissue (SAR_10g) were examined at 7.0 T and 14.0 T.

RESULTS

At 14.0 T static pTx revealed a minimum B₁⁺_ROI efficiency of 0.91 μT/√kW (SGBT), 0.73 μT/√kW (BT), and 0.56 μT/√kW (FD) and maximum SAR_10g of 4.24 W/kg, 1.45 W/kg, and 2.04 W/kg. Dynamic pTx with 8 kT points indicate a balance between B₁⁺_ROI homogeneity (coefficient of variation < 14%) and efficiency (minimum B₁⁺_ROI > 1.11 µT/√kW) at 14.0 T with a maximum SAR_10g < 5.25 W/kg.

DISCUSSION

MRI of the human heart at 14.0 T is feasible from an electrodynamic and theoretical standpoint, provided that multi-channel high-density antennas are arranged accordingly. These findings provide a technical foundation for further explorations into CMR at 14.0 T.

The metaphysics of fibre bundles

Recently, Dewar (2019) has suggested that one can apply the strategy of 'sophistication'-as exemplified by sophisticated substantivalism as a response to the diffeomorphism invariance of General Relativity-to gauge theories such as electrodynamics. This requires a shift to the formalism of fibre bundles. In this paper, I develop and defend this suggestion. Where my approach differs from previous discussions is that I focus on the metaphysical picture underlying the fibre bundle formalism. In particular, I aim to affirm the physical reality of gauge properties. I argue that this allows for a local and separable explanation of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Its puzzling features are explained by a form of holism inherent to fibre bundles.

Proposal for verifying dipole properties of light-harvesting antennas

For light harvesters with a reaction center complex (LH1-RC complex) of three types, we propose an experiment to verify our analysis based upon antenna theories that automatically include the required structural information. Our analysis conforms to the current understanding of light-harvesting antennas in that we can explain known properties of these complexes. We provide an explanation for the functional roles of the notch at the light harvester, a functional role of the polypeptide called PufX or W at the opening, a functional role of the special pair, a reason that the cross section of the light harvester must not be circular, a reason that the light harvester must not be spherical, reasons for the use of dielectric bacteriochlorophylls instead of conductors to make the light harvester, a mechanism to prevent damage from excess sunlight, an advantage of the dimeric form, and reasons for the modular design of nature. Based upon our analysis we provide a mechanism for dimerization. We predict that the dimeric form of light-harvesting complexes is favored under intense sunlight. We further comment upon the classification of the dimeric or S-shape complexes. The S-shape complexes should not be considered as the third type of light harvester but simply as a composite form.

What's nu? A re-examination of Maxwell's 'ratio-of-units' argument, from the mechanical theory of the electromagnetic field to 'On the elementary relations between electrical measurements'

This re-examination of the earliest version of Maxwell's most important argument for the electromagnetic theory of light-the equality between the speed of wave propagation in the electromagnetic ether and the ratio of electrostatic to electromagnetic measures of electrical quantity-establishes unforeseen connections between Maxwell's theoretical electrical metrology and his mechanical theory of the electromagnetic field. Electrical metrology was not neutral with respect to field-theoretic versus action-at-a-distance conceptions of electro-magnetic interaction. Mutual accommodation between these conceptions was reached by Maxwell on the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS) Committee on Electrical Standards by exploiting the measurement of the medium parameters-electric inductive capacity and magnetic permeability-on an arbitrary scale. While he always worked within this constraint in developing the 'ratio-of-units' argument mathematically, I maintain that Maxwell came to conceive of the ratio 'as a velocity' by treating the medium parameters as physical quantities that could be measured absolutely, which was only possible via the correspondences between electrical and mechanical quantities established in the mechanical theory. I thereby correct two closely-related misconceptions of the ratio-of-units argument-the counterintuitive but widespread notion that the ratio is naturally a speed, and the supposition that Maxwell either inferred or proved this from its dimensional formula.

Electrodynamics and radiofrequency antenna concepts for human magnetic resonance at 23.5 T (1 GHz) and beyond

OBJECTIVE

This work investigates electrodynamic constraints, explores RF antenna concepts and examines the transmission fields (B 1 (+) ) and RF power deposition of dipole antenna arrays for (1)H magnetic resonance of the human brain at 1 GHz (23.5 T).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Electromagnetic field (EMF) simulations are performed in phantoms with average tissue simulants for dipole antennae using discrete frequencies [300 MHz (7.0 T) to 3 GHz (70.0 T)]. To advance to a human setup EMF simulations are conducted in anatomical human voxel models of the human head using a 20-element dipole array operating at 1 GHz.

RESULTS

Our results demonstrate that transmission fields suitable for (1)H MR of the human brain can be achieved at 1 GHz. An increase in transmit channel density around the human head helps to enhance B 1 (+) in the center of the brain. The calculated relative increase in specific absorption rate at 23.5 versus 7.0 T was below 1.4 (in-phase phase setting) and 2.7 (circular polarized phase setting) for the dipole antennae array.

CONCLUSION

The benefits of multi-channel dipole antennae at higher frequencies render MR at 23.5 T feasible from an electrodynamic standpoint. This very preliminary finding opens the door on further explorations that might be catalyzed into a 20-T class human MR system.

Dynamic spatiotemporal brain analyses using high performance electrical neuroimaging: theoretical framework and validation

BACKGROUND

Since Berger's first EEG recordings in 1929, several techniques, initially developed for investigating periodic processes, have been applied to study non-periodic event-related brain state dynamics.

NEW METHOD

We provide a theoretical comparison of the two approaches and present a new suite of data-driven analytic tools for the specific identification of the brain microstates in high-density event-related brain potentials (ERPs). This suite includes four different analytic methods. We validated this approach through a series of theoretical simulations and an empirical investigation of a basic visual paradigm, the reversal checkerboard task.

RESULTS

Results indicate that the present suite of data-intensive analytic techniques, improves the spatiotemporal information one can garner about non-periodic brain microstates from high-density electrical neuroimaging data.

COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S)

Compared to the existing methods (such as those based on k-clustering methods), the current micro-segmentation approach offers several advantages, including the data-driven (automatic) detection of non-periodic quasi-stable brain states.

CONCLUSION

This suite of quantitative methods allows the automatic detection of event-related changes in the global pattern of brain activity, putatively reflecting changes in the underlying neural locus for information processing in the brain, and event-related changes in overall brain activation. In addition, within-subject and between-subject bootstrapping procedures provide a quantitative means of investigating how robust are the results of the micro-segmentation.
