The effects of heavy rain on the fate of urban and agricultural pollutants in the riverside area around weirs using multi-isotope, microbial data and numerical simulation

The increase in extreme heavy rain due to climate change is a critical factor in the fate of urban and agricultural pollutants in aquatic system. Nutrients, including NO3- and PO43-, are transported with surface and seepage waters into rivers, lakes and aquifers and can eventually lead to algal blooms. δ15N-NO3-, δ18O-NO3-, and δ11B combined with hydrogeochemical and microbial data for groundwater and surface water samples were interpreted to evaluate the fate of nutrients in a riverside area around weirs in Daegu, South Korea. Most of the ions showed similar concentrations in the groundwater samples before and after heavy rain while concentrations of major ions in surface water samples were diluted after heavy rain. However, Si, PO43-, Zn, Ce, La, Pb, Cu and a number of waterborne pathogens increased in surface water after heavy rain. The interpretation of δ11B, δ15N-NO3-, and δ18O-NO3- values using a Bayesian mixing model revealed that sewage and synthetic fertilizers were the main sources of contaminants in the groundwater and surface water samples. δ18O and SiO2 interpreted using the Bayesian mixing model indicated that the groundwater component in the surface water increased from 4.4 % to 17.9 % during the wet season. This is consistent with numerical simulation results indicating that the direct surface runoff and the groundwater baseflow contributions to the river system had also increased 6.4 times during the wet season. The increase in proteobacteria and decrease of actinobacteria in the surface water samples after heavy rain were also consistent with an increase of surface runoff and an increased groundwater component in the surface water. This study suggests that source apportionment based on chemical and multi-isotope data combined with numerical modeling approaches can be useful for identifying main hydrological and geochemical processes in riverside areas around weirs and can inform suggestions of effective methods for water quality management.

A multiple isotope (S, H, O and C) approach to estimate sulfate increasing mechanism of groundwater in coal mine area

Groundwater in North China type coal mine area is an important source of domestic, industrial and agricultural water. To explore the sulfate increasing mechanism of groundwater in mining area and identify key influencing factors. In this paper, hydrochemistry and multi-isotope tracer techniques such as δ34SSO4, δ18OSO4, δ2HH2O, δ18OH2O and δ13CDIC were used to study the groundwater circulation law and the migration and transformation mechanism of sulfate and carbonate in coal mine area. The results show that: the hydrochemical types of groundwater in the coal mine area are mainly HCO3- and SO42- anions, while the cations are mainly Ca2+ and Mg2+. The sulfate content is significantly increased, and the pH shows weak alkalinity; the relationship between δ18OH2O and δ18HH2O shows that the dynamic field of groundwater changes significantly after coal mining or closure, and limestone water mainly comes from surface water recharge through 'skylight' infiltration. The relationships between δ18OSO4 and δ18OH2O, δ34SSO4 and δ18OSO4 show that the sulfate in groundwater of coal mine area is mainly derived from sulfide oxidation. The ∆δ18OSO4-H2O value of groundwater in coal mine area is greater than 8 ‰, and the oxygen content in sulfate is 25 %-75 % from oxygen in water, indicating that coal mining has disturbed the groundwater in the study area from reducing environment to oxidizing environment, promoted sulfide oxidation, and accelerated the dissolution of carbonate minerals. The δ13CDIC value and δ34SSO4 value in the coal mine area are inversely proportional. The δ13CDIC of groundwater in the coal mine area is affected by the δ34SSO4 value to a certain extent. Sulfuric acid participates in the dissolution of carbonate minerals, making the pH value weak and alkaline as a whole. This paper expounds the migration and transformation law of sulfate in groundwater in coal mine area, which has practical significance for groundwater quality management. The research results can provide theoretical support for the rational development and utilization of groundwater resources in coal mine areas.

Assessment of sources and transformation of nitrate in the alluvial-pluvial fan region of north China using a multi-isotope approach

A multi-isotope approach and mixing model were combined to identify spatial and seasonal variations of sources, and their proportional contribution to nitrate in the Hutuo River alluvial-pluvial fan region. The results showed that the NO₃^- concentration was significantly higher in the Hutuo River valley plain (178.7 mg/L) region than that in the upper and central pluvial fans of the Hutuo River (82.1 mg/L and 71.0 mg/L, respectively) and in the river (17.0 mg/L). Different land use types had no significant effect on the groundwater nitrate concentration. Based on a multi-isotope approach, we confirmed that the main sources of groundwater nitrate in different land use areas were domestic sewage and manure, followed by soil nitrogen, ammonia fertilizer, nitrate fertilizer and rainwater, and there were no significant spatial or seasonal variations. Combining δ¹⁵N-NO₃^-, δ¹⁸O-NO₃^- and δ³⁷Cl results can increase the accuracy of traceability. Nitrification could be the most important nitrogen migration and transformation process, and denitrification did not significantly affected the isotopic composition of the nitrate. The SIAR model outputs revealed that the main nitrate pollution sources in groundwater and river water were domestic sewage and manure, accounting for 55.9%-61.0% and 22.6% (dry season), 50.3%-60.4% and 34.1% (transition season), 42.7%-47.6% and 35.6% (wet season 2016) and 45.9%-46.7% and 38.4% (wet season 2017), respectively. This work suggests that the random discharge and disposal of domestic sewage and manure should be the first target for control in order to prevent further nitrate contamination of the water environment.
