Waste mitigation and resource recovery from food industry wastewater employing microalgae-bacterial consortium

Wastewater generated by the food industry is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus with possible presence of heavy metals. Physical and chemical methods of treatment, although effective, are expensive and may cause secondary environmental pollution damaging aquatic and human life. Traditional biological methods are eco-friendly and cost-effective but involve standalone microorganisms that pose risk of contamination and are not as effective. This review discusses the application of novel microalgal-bacterial consortium as a solution for the resource recovery and treatment of dairy, starch and aquaculture wastewater. Use of biofilm reactors containing anaerobic and aerobic sludge has shown 80-90% and > 90% COD and nutrient removal efficiency in treatment of dairy and starch processing wastewater, respectively. The treatment of aquaculture processing wastewater can be challenging due to high sality and requires salt-tolerant bacteria-microalgae consortium. In this regard, the identification of dominant microalgae and bacteria using 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA genes is recommended.

COVID-19 and industrial waste mitigation via thermochemical technologies towards a circular economy: A state-of-the-art review

The increasing awareness of waste circular economy has motivated valorization strategies for minimizing resource consumption and waste production in the private sector. With the rise of various industrial wastes and with the emergence of COVID-19 wastes, a sustainable approach is needed to mitigate the growing concern about wastes. Thermochemical treatment technologies in the form of direct combustion, torrefaction, pyrolysis, and gasification have been identified to have vital roles in the value-creation of various waste streams. Moreover, the alignment of thermochemical processes for waste mitigation concerning the circular economy framework needs to be established. Accordingly, a comprehensive review of the different thermochemical treatment options for industrial and the novel COVID-19 medical wastes streams is conducted in this study. This review focuses on highlighting the instrumental role of thermochemical conversion platforms in achieving a circular economy in the industrial sector. Various strategies in waste mitigation through various thermochemical processes such as management, recovery, reduction, and treatment are discussed. The results show that thermochemical technologies are beneficial in addressing the sustainability concerns on mitigating wastes from the industrial sector and wastes brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. This also includes the current issues faced as well as future perspectives of the thermochemical conversion technologies.

Benefits, challenges and critical factors of success for Zero Waste: A systematic literature review

Considering the growing concern with solid wastes problems and the pressing need for a holistic approach to their management, this study developed a literature review about the subject "Zero Waste". To that end, a systematic literature review was executed, through which 102 published articles were analyzed with the aim to, initially, comprehend the concept of Zero Waste, and, then, map its benefits, challenges, and critical success factors. The results show that scholars have not reached a consensus regarding the concept of ZW. While some studies fully address this philosophy, other studies are based on just one or on some of its topics. The benefits were grouped and organized into four dimensions: benefits to the community, financial-economic benefits, benefits to the environment and benefits to the industry and stakeholders. As to the challenges, barriers were identified both in the macro environment (mainly political and cultural) and in the meso and micro environments (stakeholders, industries, and municipalities). The analysis of the articles enabled listing critical success factors, supported by a set of activities that must be carried out. Regarding future studies, it is worth noting that more empirical studies about ZW implementation are necessary, particularly with regard to educational practices designed to promote changes in user behavior.
