New insights into Chlorella vulgaris applications

Environmental pollution is a big challenge that has been faced by humans in contemporary life. In this context, fossil fuel, cement production, and plastic waste pose a direct threat to the environment and biodiversity. One of the prominent solutions is the use of renewable sources, and different organisms to valorize wastes into green energy and bioplastics such as polylactic acid. Chlorella vulgaris, a microalgae, is a promising candidate to resolve these issues due to its ease of cultivation, fast growth, carbon dioxide uptake, and oxygen production during its growth on wastewater along with biofuels, and other productions. Thus, in this article, we focused on the potential of Chlorella vulgaris to be used in wastewater treatment, biohydrogen, biocement, biopolymer, food additives, and preservation, biodiesel which is seen to be the most promising for industrial scale, and related biorefineries with the most recent applications with a brief review of Chlorella and polylactic acid market size to realize the technical/nontechnical reasons behind the cost and obstacles that hinder the industrial production for the mentioned applications. We believe that our findings are important for those who are interested in scientific/financial research about microalgae.

Impact of Particle Size on the Setting Behavior of Tricalcium Silicate: A Comparative Study Using ISO 6876 Indentation Testing and Isothermal Induction Calorimetry

This study examines the impact of particle size on the setting behavior of tricalcium silicate powders. The setting behavior was evaluated using ISO 6876 indentation testing and isothermal induction calorimetry techniques. The objective was to compare the outcomes obtained from these methods and establish a correlation between particle size and setting characteristics. The cement pastes were manually mixed with a water-to-solid ratio of 0.66 for conducting indentation tests according to ISO 6876, while calorimetry measurements were performed using isothermal (conduction) calorimetry at room temperature. The findings demonstrate a significant influence of smaller particle sizes on accelerating the hydration process of cement pastes, resulting in a reduction of setting time by up to 24%. Moreover, the final setting times obtained through the indentation method closely approximate the inflection points of the acceleration curves acquired by calorimetry, with time deviations of less than 12% regardless of particle size.

Novel Biocement/Honey Composites for Bone Regenerative Medicine

New biocements based on a powdered mixture of calcium phosphate/monetite (TTCPM) modified with the addition of honey were prepared by mixing the powder and honey liquid components at a non-cytotoxic concentration of honey (up to 10% (w/v)). The setting process of the cements was not affected by the addition of honey, and the setting time of ~4 min corresponded to the fast setting calcium phosphate cements (CPCs). The cement powder mixture was completely transformed into calcium-deficient nanohydroxyapatite after 24 h of hardening in a simulated body fluid, and the columnar growth of long, needle-like nanohydroxyapatite particles around the original calcium phosphate particles was observed in the honey cements. The compressive strength of the honey cements was reduced with the content of honey in the cement. Comparable antibacterial activities were found for the cements with honey solutions on Escherichia coli, but very low antibacterial activities were found for Staphylococcus aureus for all the cements. The enhanced antioxidant inhibitory activity of the composite extracts was verified. In vitro cytotoxicity testing verified the non-cytotoxic nature of the honey cement extracts, and the addition of honey promoted alkaline phosphatase activity, calcium deposit production, and the upregulation of osteogenic genes (osteopontin, osteocalcin, and osteonectin) by mesenchymal stem cells, demonstrating the positive synergistic effect of honey and CPCs on the bioactivity of cements that could be promising therapeutic candidates for the repair of bone defects.

Microbially Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation by Sporosarcina pasteurii: a Case Study in Optimizing Biological CaCO3 Precipitation

Current production of traditional concrete requires enormous energy investment that accounts for approximately 5 to 8% of the world's annual CO2 production. Biocement is a building material that is already in industrial use and has the potential to rival traditional concrete as a more convenient and more environmentally friendly alternative. Biocement relies on biological structures (enzymes, cells, and/or cellular superstructures) to mineralize and bind particles in aggregate materials (e.g., sand and soil particles). Sporosarcina pasteurii is a workhorse organism for biocementation, but most research to date has focused on S. pasteurii as a building material rather than a biological system. In this review, we synthesize available materials science, microbiology, biochemistry, and cell biology evidence regarding biological CaCO3 precipitation and the role of microbes in microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) with a focus on S. pasteurii. Based on the available information, we provide a model that describes the molecular and cellular processes involved in converting feedstock material (urea and Ca2+) into cement. The model provides a foundational framework that we use to highlight particular targets for researchers as they proceed into optimizing the biology of MICP for biocement production.

Architecture and tube structure of Sabellaria spinulosa (Leuckart, 1849): Comparison with the Mediterranean S. alveolata congener

The Atlantic-Mediterranean polychaete Sabellaria spinulosa (Leuckart, 1849) lives in agglutinated tubes forming discrete reef-like bioconstructions on shallow-water bottoms beaten by waves where sediment particles are constantly resuspended. Tubes are built with sand grains glued by a proteinaceous cement. Analyses of a S. spinulosa reef sample of this worm collected off the Casarza coast (central Adriatic Sea) allowed the description of its tube architecture and gluing modality. The tube consists of three layers of agglutinated sand: (a) a thin inner layer with sandy particles arranged side by side with a flat side facing the tube lumen (b) a thick middle layer with larger isodiametric and squat grains with empty pores in between; and (c) a thin discontinuous outer layer of heterometric clasts, prevalently large and flat, diverging towards the opening. This fits the general tube construction known for S. alveolata and in general for tubes of the sabellariidae family, but compared to Sabellaria alveolata, S. spinulosa possesses a smaller tube with a wall about 1/3 thick; the agglutinated sandy elements are finer, and some number of muddy particles participates in the tube construction. Morphological and epifluorescence observations revealed that biocement portions are irregularly and haphazardly distributed compared with those of S. alveolata that consist of drops and strips of glue carefully placed. Adjacent tubes leave empty interspaces in between them only locally filled by loose sand, extremely reduced to absent in S. alveolata.

Durability Improvement of Biocemented Sand by Fiber-Reinforced MICP for Coastal Erosion Protection

Soil improvement via MICP (microbially induced carbonate precipitation) technologies has recently received widespread attention in the geoenvironmental and geotechnical fields. The durability of MICP-treated samples remains a critical concern in this novel method. In this work, fiber (jute)-reinforced MICP-treated samples were investigated to evaluate their durability under exposure to distilled water (DW) and artificial seawater (ASW), so as to advance the understanding of long-term performance mimicking real field conditions, along with improvement of the MICP-treated samples for use in coastal erosion protection. Primarily, the results showed that the addition of fiber (jute) improved the durability of the MICP-treated samples by more than 50%. Results also showed that the wet–dry (WD) cyclic process resulted in adverse effects on the mechanical and physical characteristics of fiber-reinforced MICP-treated samples in both DW and ASW. The breakdown of calcium carbonates and bonding effects in between the sand particles was discovered to be involved in the deterioration of MICP samples caused by WD cycles, and this occurs in two stages. The findings of this study would be extremely beneficial to extend the insight and understanding of improvement and durability responses for significant and effective MICP treatments and/or re-treatments.

strain YL and elastic properties of its biogenic CaCO3 towards biocement application

BACKGROUND

Biocement, calcifying bacteria-incorporated cement, offers an environmentally-friendly way to increase the cement lifespan. This work aimed to investigate the potential use of Lysinibacillus sp. strain YL towards biocement application in both theoretical and experimental ways.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Strain YL was grown using calcium acetate (Ca(C₂ H₃ O₂ )₂ ), calcium chloride (CaCl₂ ) and calcium nitrate (Ca(NO₃ )₂ ). Maximum bacterial growth of ~0.09 hr-1 and the highest amount of CaCO₃ precipitation of ~8.0 g/L were obtained when using Ca(C₂ H₃ O₂ )₂ . The SEM and XRD results confirmed that biogenic CaCO₃ were calcites. The bulk, Young's and shear moduli of biogenic CaCO₃ calculated via the VRH approximation were ~1.5-2.3 times larger than those of ordinary Portland cement. The Poisson's ratio was 0.382 and negative in some directions, suggesting its ductility and auxetic behaviors. The new model was developed to explain the growth kinetic of strain YL in the presence of Ca(C₂ H₃ O₂ )₂ , whose concentration was optimized for biocement experiments. Strain YL could increase the compressive strength of cement up to ~50% higher than that of the uninoculated cement.

CONCLUSION

Strain YL is a promising candidate for biocement applications. This work represents the trials of experiments and models allowing quantitatively comparison with large-scale production in the future.

Alginic Acid Polymer-Hydroxyapatite Composites for Bone Tissue Engineering

Natural bone is a composite organic-inorganic material, containing hydroxyapatite (HAP) as an inorganic phase. In this review, applications of natural alginic acid (ALGH) polymer for the fabrication of composites containing HAP are described. ALGH is used as a biocompatible structure directing, capping and dispersing agent for the synthesis of HAP. Many advanced techniques for the fabrication of ALGH-HAP composites are attributed to the ability of ALGH to promote biomineralization. Gel-forming and film-forming properties of ALGH are key factors for the development of colloidal manufacturing techniques. Electrochemical fabrication techniques are based on strong ALGH adsorption on HAP, pH-dependent charge and solubility of ALGH. Functional properties of advanced composite ALGH-HAP films and coatings, scaffolds, biocements, gels and beads are described. The composites are loaded with other functional materials, such as antimicrobial agents, drugs, proteins and enzymes. Moreover, the composites provided a platform for their loading with cells for the fabrication of composites with enhanced properties for various biomedical applications. This review summarizes manufacturing strategies, mechanisms and outlines future trends in the development of functional biocomposites.

Hyaluronic-Acid-Based Organic-Inorganic Composites for Biomedical Applications

Applications of natural hyaluronic acid (HYH) for the fabrication of organic-inorganic composites for biomedical applications are described. Such composites combine unique functional properties of HYH with functional properties of hydroxyapatite, various bioceramics, bioglass, biocements, metal nanoparticles, and quantum dots. Functional properties of advanced composite gels, scaffold materials, cements, particles, films, and coatings are described. Benefiting from the synergy of properties of HYH and inorganic components, advanced composites provide a platform for the development of new drug delivery materials. Many advanced properties of composites are attributed to the ability of HYH to promote biomineralization. Properties of HYH are a key factor for the development of colloidal and electrochemical methods for the fabrication of films and protective coatings for surface modification of biomedical implants and the development of advanced biosensors. Overcoming limitations of traditional materials, HYH is used as a biocompatible capping, dispersing, and structure-directing agent for the synthesis of functional inorganic materials and composites. Gel-forming properties of HYH enable a facile and straightforward approach to the fabrication of antimicrobial materials in different forms. Of particular interest are applications of HYH for the fabrication of biosensors. This review summarizes manufacturing strategies and mechanisms and outlines future trends in the development of functional biocomposites.

The Influence of the Addition of Plant-Based Natural Fibers (Jute) on Biocemented Sand Using MICP Method

The microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) method has gained intense attention in recent years as a safe and sustainable alternative for soil improvement and for use in construction materials. In this study, the effects of the addition of plant-based natural jute fibers to MICP-treated sand and the corresponding microstructures were measured to investigate their subsequent impacts on the MICP-treated biocemented sand. The fibers used were at 0%, 0.5%, 1.5%, 3%, 5%, 10%, and 20% by weight of the sand, while the fiber lengths were 5, 15, and 25 mm. The microbial interactions with the fibers, the CaCO₃ precipitation trend, and the biocemented specimen (microstructure) were also evaluated based on the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) values, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and fluorescence microscopy. The results of this study showed that the added jute fibers improved the engineering properties (ductility, toughness, and brittleness behavior) of the biocemented sand using MICP method. Furthermore, the fiber content more significantly affected the engineering properties of the MICP-treated sand than the fiber length. In this study, the optimal fiber content was 3%, whereas the optimal fiber length was s 15 mm. The SEM results indicated that the fiber facilitated the MICP process by bridging the pores in the calcareous sand, reduced the brittleness of the treated samples, and increased the mechanical properties of the biocemented sand. The results of this study could significantly contribute to further improvement of fiber-reinforced biocemented sand in geotechnical engineering field applications.

Biocement stabilization of an experimental-scale artificial slope and the reformation of iron-rich crusts

Novel biotechnologies are required to remediate iron ore mines and address the increasing number of tailings (mine waste) dam collapses worldwide. In this study, we aimed to accelerate iron reduction and oxidation to stabilize an artificial slope. An open-air bioreactor was inoculated with a mixed consortium of microorganisms capable of reducing iron. Fluid from the bioreactor was allowed to overflow onto the artificial slope. Carbon sources from the bioreactor fluid promoted the growth of a surface biofilm within the artificial slope, which naturally aggregated the crushed grains. The biofilms provided an organic framework for the nucleation of iron oxide minerals. Iron-rich biocements stabilized the artificial slope and were significantly more resistant to physical deformation compared with the control experiment. These biotechnologies highlight the potential to develop strategies for mine remediation and waste stabilization by accelerating the biogeochemical cycling of iron.

Interfacial Interaction between Suolunite Crystal and Silica Binding Peptide for Novel Bioinspired Cement

Cement and concrete have been important construction materials throughout human history. There is an urgent need to explore novel and untraditional cementitious materials to enhance the durability of building materials and structures in response to increased infrastructure demand worldwide. We report an exploratory study on a biocomposite cement based on a large-scale computational study using density functional theory. An explicitly solvated mixture of a mineral calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) crystal suolunite (Ca₂Si₂O₅(OH)₂·H₂O) and a silicon binding peptide with amino acid sequence PRO-PRO-PRO-TRP-LEU-PRO-TYR-MET-PRO-PRO-TRP-SER is constructed using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). Detailed analysis on the interface structure, interatomic bonding, mechanical properties, and solvent effect of this model reveals a complex interplay of different types of covalent and ionic bonding, including ubiquitous hydrogen bonding which plays a crucial role in their properties. The use of the total bond order density (TBOD), a single quantum mechanical metric, for assessing the interfacial cohesion for this composite biocement is proposed. We find that the solvated model has a slightly larger TBOD than the dried one. These results could lead to a systematic search and rational design for different types of bioinspired and hybrid functional materials with other inorganic minerals and organic peptides.

Changes in the Acute-Phase Protein Concentrations and Activities of Some Enzymes in Pigs Following the Repair of Experimentally Induced Articular Cartilage Defects Using Two Types of Biocement Powder

Articular cartilage reconstruction is aimed at the restoration of damaged joint cartilage. The use of bone cement is one type of method applicable for this reconstruction. The potential use of repair techniques must be evaluated by pre-clinical and clinical studies in animal models, including the assessment of some biochemical parameters. Acute-phase proteins are a class of proteins whose concentrations increase in response to injury or inflammation. They may serve as useful biomarkers for the evaluation of post-operative complications, as well as to reflect the extent of surgical trauma. Information regarding their usefulness after cartilage reconstruction are still limited. Similarly, little is known about the response of the organism to various reconstruction techniques and various biomaterials used for the repair of defects. This paper provides important information about the changes in the concentrations of acute-phase proteins and the activity of serum enzymes in pigs within the first 30 days following the repair of experimentally induced articular cartilage defects using tetracalcium phosphate/nanomonetite cement powder (C cement) and cement powder containing aminoacids (CAK cement). Marked inflammatory responses with increased acute-phase proteins concentrations were observed following the reconstruction of articular cartilage defects using both types of biocement powder. The results suggest, that the tetracalcium phosphate/nanomonetite cement powder without amino acids would be more suitable for possible cartilage repair in the human population.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to assess the usefulness of acute-phase proteins (APPs) and serum enzymes in the evaluation of post-operative state after cartilage reconstruction in an animal model (Sus scrofa domesticus). Fifteen clinically healthy female pigs were evaluated during the first 30 days after the repair of experimentally induced articular cartilage defects using two types of biocement powders. Animals were divided into groups according to the type of biocement powder used: CAK—with amino acids (n = 6), C—without amino acids (n = 6) and the control group (Ctr) was without biocement (n = 3). The concentrations of selected APPs—serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin (Hp) and C-reactive protein (CRP), and the activities of some serum enzymes—creatine kinase (CK), alkaline phosphatase (AP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LD) were measured one day before the surgery and on days 7, 14, and 30 after the surgical intervention. The most significant changes during the evaluated period were observed in the concentrations of SAA (p < 0.001) and Hp (p < 0.001), with marked increase of values 7 days after surgery. There was a numerical, but not statistically significant, difference between CAK, C and Ctr groups (p > 0.05). Marked variations were observed also in the activities of the evaluated enzymes, with the most significant changes in the activity of AP in the CAK group (p < 0.001). Presented results suggest possible usefulness of some APPs and serum enzymes in the evaluation of post-operative inflammatory state after the reconstruction of articular cartilage defects.
