A Simulation Experiment on Quality Dynamics of Reclaimed Water under Different Flow Exchanges

Reclaimed water plays an important role in maintaining urban aquatic ecosystems, especially in areas with water shortages. However, there is little information on water quality dynamics and its driving mechanism in reclaimed water bodies. The simulated experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of flow exchange on water quality dynamics and soil microbial diversity for 100% reclaimed water and mixed water (50% reclaimed and 50% stream water), and the exchange periods ranged from 2 to 40 days. The results showed that the degradation coefficients (K) of COD_Mn and NH₃-N were 0.015 d^-1 and 0.001 d^-1 for the mixed water, while their K values were negative for the reclaimed water. The flow exchange had little effect on water quality dynamics for the mixed water, which may be attributed to the relatively low concentration of TP in this reclaimed water. A small or great exchange period led to a relatively high fluctuation in K during the experimental period and corresponded to a worse soil microbial diversity. These results indicate that it is not recommended to fill an isolated urban lake with 100% reclaimed water and that a suitable flow exchange period of 5~10 days could help self-purify the water quality.

Experimental Investigation on the Relationship Between COD Degradation and Hydrodynamic Conditions in Urban Rivers

Due to extensive pollution and the relatively weak flow replacement in urban rivers, determining how to fully utilize the self-purification abilities of water bodies for water quality protection has been a complex and popular topic of research and social concern. Organic pollution is an important type of urban river pollution, and COD (chemical oxygen demand) is one of the key pollution factors. Currently, there is a lack of research on the relationship between COD degradation and the flow characteristics of urban rivers. In this paper, COD degradation experiments were conducted in an annular flume with Jinjiang River water at controlled flow velocities and the COD degradation coefficients under different hydraulic conditions were analyzed. A good correlation was observed between the degradation coefficient and hydraulic conditions. According to dimensional analysis, the relationship between the COD degradation coefficient and hydraulic conditions such as the flow velocity, water depth, Reynolds number (Re), and Froude number (Fr) was established as KCOD=86400uhFr0.8415Re−1.2719+0.258. The COD degradation coefficients of the Chishui River in Guizhou Province ranged from 0.175–0.373 1/d based on this formula, and the field-measured values varied from 0.234–0.463 1/d. The error in the formula ranged from 5.4–25.3%. This study provides a scientific basis for the prediction of the COD degradation coefficients of urban rivers.

Research on the Relationship between Water Diversion and Water Quality of Xuanwu Lake, China

Water diversion is often used to improve water quality to reach the standard of China in the short term. However, this large amount of water diversion can not only improve the water quality, but also lead to a decline in the water quality (total phosphorus, total nitrogen) of Xuanwu Lake. Through theoretical analysis, the relationship between water quality and water diversion is established. We also found that the multiplication of the pollutant degradation coefficient (K) and the water residence time (T) is a constant (N), K⋅T=N. The water quality changed better at first, with the increase of inflow discharge, and then became worse, and the optimal water quality inflow discharge is 180,000 m³/day. By constructing two-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models, the optimal diversion water plan is calculated. Through model calculations, it can be seen that reducing the inflow discharge makes the water residence time longer (15.3 days changed to 23.8 days). Thereby, increasing the degradation of pollutants, and thus improving water quality. Compared with other wind directions, the southwest wind makes the water quality of Xuanwu Lake the most uniform. The concentration of water quality first became smaller and then became larger, as the wind speed increased, and eventually became constant. Implementing these results for water quality improvement in small and medium lakes will significantly reduce the cost of water diversion.
