Abstract
BACKGROUND Internet addiction disorder (IAD) is characterized by an excess of uncontrolled preoccupations, urges, or behaviors related to computer use and Internet access that culminate in negative outcomes or individual distress. PIU includes excessive online activities (such as video gaming, social media use, streaming, pornography viewing, and shopping). The aim of this study was to analyze the association of gene polymorphisms that may influence the severity of risky behaviors in young men with the frequency of Internet use. We speculate that there are individual differences in the mechanisms of Internet addiction and that gene-hormone associations may represent useful biomarkers for subgroups of individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was conducted in a sample of 407 adult males. Subjects were asked to complete the Problematic Internet Use Test (PIUT). Serum was analyzed to determine concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone (TT), sex hormone binding protein (SHBG), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), estradiol (E2), prolactin (PRL), insulin (I), serotonin (5-HT), and dopamine (DA), as well as DRD2, ANKK1, and NTRK3 gene polymorphisms. RESULTS In the analysis of the ANKK1 gene, there was a specific association between ANKK1 polymorphisms and PRL and 5-HT blood concentrations. There was also an association between the ANKK1 polymorphisms and LH and DA concentrations. When analyzing the DRD2 gene polymorphism, we found that in the group with a moderate level of Internet dependence, there was an association between both the G/GG and GG/GG polymorphisms and FSH concentration. CONCLUSIONS Our study found that there may be an association between the NTRK3 gene polymorphism and PIU. The polymorphisms of ANKK1 and DRD2 genes may be factors that influence the concentrations of hormones (PRL, 5-HT, DA) that are associated with the results obtained in PIU.

Abstract
Background and objective Whilst acupuncture is widely used for treating psychosomatic diseases, there is little high-quality evidence supporting its application in comorbid perimenopausal depression (PMD) and insomnia (PMI) which are common complaints during climacteric. This feasibility, patient-assessor-blinded, randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial addresses this gap by investigating the efficacy and safety of acupuncture on depressed mood and poor sleep in women with comorbid PMD and PMI. Methods Seventy eligible participants were randomly assigned to either real-acupuncture (RA) or sham-acupuncture (SA) groups. Either RA or SA treatment were delivered in 17 sessions over 8 weeks. The primary outcomes for mood and sleep were changes on 17-items Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D17) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores, from baseline to 16-week follow-up. Secondary outcome measures involved anxiety symptoms, perimenopausal symptoms, quality of life, participants' experience of and satisfaction with the acupuncture treatment. Blood samples were taken to measure reproductive hormone levels. Intention-To-Treat and Per-Protocol analyses were conducted with linear mixed-effects models. The James' and Bang's blinding indices were used to assess the adequacy of blinding. Results Sixty-five participants completed all treatment sessions, and 54 and 41 participants completed the eight- and 16-week follow-ups, respectively. At post-treatment and 8-week follow-up, the RA group showed a significantly greater reduction in PSQI scores than the SA group did; although the reduction of HAM-D17 scores in RA group was significant, the change was not statistically different from that of SA. There were no significant mean differences between baseline and 16-week follow-up in either HAM-D17 or PSQI in either group. There were no significant between-group differences in serum reproductive hormone levels. All treatments were tolerable and no serious adverse events were reported, and the blinding was successful. Conclusion Acupuncture is safe and can contribute to clinically relevant improvements in comorbid PMD and PMI, with satisfactory short-and medium-term effects. Whether the anti-depressive benefit of acupuncture is specific or non-specific remains to be determined. No evidence was found for any longer-term benefit of acupuncture compared to sham at 16 weeks. Further research is required to elucidate mechanisms underlying the short to medium term effects of acupuncture.

Abstract
The etiopathogenesis of fibromyalgia (FM) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is not yet elucidated. Hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction is reflected in the hormonal disturbances found in FM and CFS. Some study groups have introduced a novel hypothesis that moderate or intermittent intracranial hypertension may be involved in the etiopathogenesis of FM and CFS. In these conditions, hormonal disturbances may be caused by the mechanical effect of increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure, which hampers blood flow in the pituitary gland. Severe intracranial pressure may compress the pituitary gland, resulting in primary empty sella (ES), potentially leading to pituitary hormone deficiencies. The aim of this narrative review was to explore whether similar hormonal changes and symptoms exist between primary ES and FM or CFS and to link them to cerebrospinal fluid pressure dysregulation. A thorough search of the PubMed and Web of Science databases and the reference lists of the included studies revealed that several clinical characteristics were more prevalent in primary ES, FM or CFS patients than in controls, including increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure, obesity, female sex, headaches and migraine, fatigue, visual disturbances (visual acuity and eye motility abnormalities), vestibulocochlear disturbances (vertigo and neurosensorial hearing loss), and bodily pain (radicular pain and small-fiber neuropathy). Furthermore, challenge tests of the pituitary gland showed similar abnormalities in all three conditions: blunted adrenocorticotropic hormone, cortisol, growth hormone, luteinizing hormone, and thyroid stimulating hormone responses and an increased prolactin response. The findings of this narrative review provide further support for the hypothesis that moderately or intermittently increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure is involved in the pathogenesis of FM and CFS and should stimulate further research into the etiopathogenesis of these conditions.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have been shown to induce reproductive system damages in animals. To better underline how TiO2 NPs act in reproductive system, female mice were exposed to 2.5, 5, or 10 mg/kg TiO2 NPs by gavage administration for 60 days, the ovary injuries, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels as well as ovarian follicular development-related molecule expression were investigated. The results showed that TiO2 NPs exposure resulted in reduction of ovary weight and inhibition of ovarian follicular development. Furthermore, the suppression of follicular development was demonstrated to be closely related to higher FSH and LH levels, and higher expression of activin, follistatin, BMP2, BMP4, TGF-β1, Smad2, Smad3, and Smad4 as well as decreased inhibin-α expression in mouse ovary in a dose-dependent manner. It implies that the impairment of ovarian follicular development caused by TiO2 NPs exposure may be mediated by TGF-β signal pathway.

Abstract
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a metabolic, reproductive, and psychological complex series of disorders that impacts a woman throughout her lifespan. PCOS is a disorder of hormonal imbalance occurring in women of reproductive age. This disorder is characterized by high levels of male androgens like testosterone. This can lead to symptoms like irregular periods, amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), anovulation (absence of ovulation), hirsutism, acne, and obesity. PCOS also causes metabolic impairment. Multiple peripherally arranged immature follicles of about 2-5mm in diameter are present in the ovary. These follicles do not mature due to hormonal imbalances leading to an irregular menstrual cycle. PCOS is a metabolic, reproductive, and psychological complex series of disorders that impacts a woman throughout her lifespan. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is not a fatal or life-threatening disorder as its main complication is infertility. PCOS can be a root cause of serious medical conditions like obesity, hypertension, type-2 diabetes mellitus due to insulin resistance, endometrial cancers, ovarian cancer, etc. Stress may cause the hormone levels in the pituitary to fluctuate. Since the menstrual cycle is hormone-based, there are apparent irregularities.

Abstract
Findings from epidemiological studies suggest that occupational exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) may increase the risk of miscarriage and contribute to a reduction in fertility rates in both men and women. However, workers exposed to WBV may also be exposed to other risk factors that contribute to reproductive dysfunction. The goal of this experiment was to examine the effects of WBV on reproductive physiology in a rat model. Male and female rats were exposed to WBV at the resonant frequency of the torso (31.5 Hz, 0.3 g amplitude) for 4 hr/day for 10 days. WBV exposure resulted in a significant reduction in number of developing follicles, and decrease in circulating estradiol concentrations, ovarian luteinizing hormone receptor protein levels, and marked changes in transcript levels for several factors involved in follicular development, cell cycle, and steroidogenesis. In males, WBV resulted in a significant reduction in spermatids and circulating prolactin levels, elevation in number of males having higher circulating testosterone concentrations, and marked alterations in levels of transcripts associated with oxidative stress, inflammation, and factors involved in regulating the cell cycle. Based upon these findings data indicate that occupational exposure to WBV contributes to adverse alterations in reproductive physiology in both genders that may lead to reduction in fertility.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of combined treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist and menstrual blood-derived stem cell (MenSC) transplantation on ovarian function in mice. METHODS We tested the effect of GnRH agonist and MenSC transplantation, either alone or in combination, in a mouse model of premature ovarian failure (POF) induced by daily intraperitoneal injection of 120 mg/kg cyclophosphamide (CTX) for 15 days. Venirelin was administered at the daily dose of 0.1 mg via intravenous infusion, starting at 14 days before modeling; MenSC suspension (2× 106 cells) was injected into the ovarium 1 day after modeling. HE staining was used to observe ovarian pathologies of the mice. ELISA was used to detect serum levels of LH, FSH, AMH and E2. The expression levels of ki-67, Bcl-2, BAX, caspase 9, caspase 3, their cleavages, P-PI3K, PI3K, P-Akt and Akt proteins in ovarian granulosa cells were determined with Western blotting. RESULTS The mouse models of POF showed obvious ovarian fibrosis with increased atresia follicles and had significantly elevated serum levels of LH and FSH (P < 0.01), decreased serum levels of AMH and E2 (P < 0.01), significantly increased ovarian expression levels of caspase 9, caspase 3, and their cleavages (P < 0.01), and decreased expression levels of Ki-67, Bcl-2, P-PI3K and P-Akt (P < 0.01). The combined treatment with GnRH agonist and MenSC transplantation obviously inhibited the production of ovarian atresia follicles, lowered serum levels of LH and FSH (P < 0.01), and increased the levels of AMH and E2 (P < 0.05 or 0.01) in the mouse models. The combined treatment also inhibited the expressions of BAX and cleaved caspase 9 and caspase 3 proteins (P < 0.05 or 0.01) and enhanced the expressions of Ki-67, Bcl-2, P-PI3K, and p-Akt proteins (P < 0.05 or 0.01) in ovarian granulococcus cells. CONCLUSION In mouse models of POF, GnRH agonist combined with MenSC transplantation can reduce the generation of ovarian atresia and improve ovarian reserve by up-regulating PI3K-Akt signaling pathway to achieve ovarian repair and protection.

Abstract
Male infertility refers to the inability to conceive a natural pregnancy in a fertile female, and approximately 15% of reproductive‐aged couples worldwide face this problem. Several plants were used to treat fertility disorders and, among them, Lepidium meyenii, a folk medicament of Andean regions, is still used to enhance vitality and treat sterility in humans and domestic animals. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of L. meyenii Walpers on infertile patients by a randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled trial. Fifty patients suffering from various reproductive‐related problems were enrolled for 16 weeks to evaluate the effect of yellow maca on semen quality and serum hormone levels. Treatment with maca improved the percentage of sperm concentration by 40%, whereas the placebo improved by 76% after 8 and 16 weeks of treatment, but the results were statistically non‐significant. No statistically significant change in hormone levels was reported by using maca, except a decrease in the level of free testosterone. Results are not sufficient to assess the efficacy of maca on male fertility. Further investigation and trials are required to obtain conclusive results.

Abstract
In order to achieve a desired therapeutic effect in schizophrenia patients and to maintain their mental wellbeing, pharmacological therapy needs to be continued for a long time, usually from the onset of symptoms and for the rest of the patients' lives. The aim of our present research is to find out the in vivo effect of chronic treatment with atypical neuroleptic iloperidone on the expression and activity of cytochrome P450 (CYP) in rat liver. Male Wistar rats received a once-daily intraperitoneal injection of iloperidone (1 mg/kg) for a period of two weeks. Twenty-four hours after the last dose, livers were excised to study cytochrome P450 expression (mRNA and protein) and activity, pituitaries were isolated to determine growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), and blood was collected for measuring serum concentrations of hormones and interleukin. The results showed a broad spectrum of changes in the expression and activity of liver CYP enzymes, which are important for drug metabolism (CYP1A, CYP2B, CYP2C, and CYP3A) and xenobiotic toxicity (CYP2E1). Iloperidone decreased the expression and activity of CYP1A2, CP2B1/2, CYP2C11, and CYP3A1/2 enzymes but increased that of CYP2E1. The CYP2C6 enzyme remained unchanged. At the same time, the level of GHRH, GH, and corticosterone decreased while that of T3 increased, with no changes in IL-2 and IL-6. The presented results indicate neuroendocrine regulation of the investigated CYP enzymes during chronic iloperidone treatment and suggest a possibility of pharmacokinetic/metabolic interactions produced by the neuroleptic during prolonged combined treatment with drugs that are substrates of iloperidone-affected CYP enzymes.

Abstract
Investigation of the mechanisms promoting the development of menstrual function disorders associated with obesity in adolescent girls is one of the most important issues of modern medicine. This study included 110 patients. 79 patients aged 12-18 with menstrual disorders associated with obesity were divided into two groups: group 1: 46 patients with apparent signs of hyperandrogenism, group 2: 33 patients without clinical manifestations of hyperandrogenism. The control group included 31 girls of the same age with a regular menstrual cycle. The complex of hormone examination of adolescent girls included determination of serum content: gonadotropic hormones (luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL), estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), progesterone (PR), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate; insulin (In) - radioisotope method on a gamma counter "Narcotest" (reagents "IMMUNOTECH", Czech Republic). We identified hyperleptinemia and leptin resistance in patients with menstrual function impairment associated with obesity. In group I, the adiponectin level exceeded the values of the control group (p<0.05). The results revealed a decrease in A/L in group I - 5.4 times compared with patients in group II (p<0.05) and 4.3 times - compared with the control group (p<0.05). The results revealed a decrease in A/L among girls in the group I with MFI associated with obesity - 4.3 times - compared with girls in the control group (p<0,05).

Abstract
We investigated possible changes in morphology and immunohistochemistry of the uterus and ovaries of rats caused by nandrolone (ND); we also investigated effects on fertility. We used 30 rats divided into three experimental groups: control (C), control vehicle (CV) and 5 mg/kg ND. Rats treated with ND exhibited loss of estrous cyclicity with predominance of the estrus phase, increased body weight and an organosomatic index that was decreased for the ovaries, but increased for the uterus. In the ovary, we observed a reduction in primary and secondary follicles and an increase in tertiary follicles; no corpora lutea were observed. Estrogen and progesterone levels were reduced. In the uterus, the endometrium was edematous with hyperplasic glands. The cytokines, TNFα and IL6, and the apoptotic index were increased in rats treated with ND. VEGF-A was increased in the ovaries and decreased in the uterus. We conclude that ND disrupts ovarian and uterine histophysiology by establishing an anovulatory and inflammatory condition, which directly affects reproduction.

Abstract
Numerous Trichoderma strains have been reported to be optimal biofertilizers and biocontrol agents with low production costs and environmentally friendly properties. Trichoderma spp. promote the growth and immunity of plants by multiple means. Interfering with the hormonal homeostasis in plants is the most critical strategy. However, the mechanisms underlying plants' responses to Trichoderma remain to be further elucidated. Auxin is the most important phytohormone that regulates almost every aspect of a plant's life, especially the trade-off between growth and defense. The AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR (ARF) family proteins are key players in auxin signaling. We studied the responses and functions of the PdPapARF1 gene in a hybrid poplar during its interaction with beneficial T. asperellum strains using transformed poplar plants with PdPapARF1 overexpression (on transcription level in this study). We report that PdPapARF1 is a positive regulator for promoting poplar growth and defense responses, as does T. asperellum inoculation. PdPapARF1 also turned out to be a positive stimulator of adventitious root formation. Particularly, the overexpression of PdPapARF1 induced a 32.3% increase in the height of 40-day-old poplar plants and a 258% increase in the amount of adventitious root of 3-week-old subcultured plant clones. Overexpressed PdPapARF1 exerted its beneficial functions through modulating the hormone levels of indole acetic acid (IAA), jasmonic acid (JA), and salicylic acid (SA) in plants and activating their signaling pathways, creating similar results as inoculated with T. asperellum. Particularly, in the overexpressing poplar plants, the IAA level increased by approximately twice of the wild-type plants; and the signaling pathways of IAA, JA, and SA were drastically activated than the wild-type plants under pathogen attacks. Our report presents the potential of ARFs as the crucial and positive responders in plants to Trichoderma inducing.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of dietary grape seed polyphenols (GSP) supplementation during the late gestation and lactation period on reproductive performance, antioxidative status in serum, nutrient composition, and Ig content in colostrum of multiparous sows. On day 80 of gestation, a total of 64 sows with similar body condition were allocated to a completely randomized block design with 4 dietary treatments (n = 16 sows per treatment): 1) basal diet (CON, control group); 2) basal diet supplemented with 200 IU/kg vitamin E (200VE, positive control group); 3) basal diet supplemented with 200 mg/kg GSP (200GSP); and 4) basal diet supplemented with 300 mg/kg GSP (300GSP). The trial lasted 56 d until the piglets were weaned on day 21 of lactation. Reproductive performance, parameters of antioxidative status, and levels of progesterone (P4) and estradiol (E2) in serum, nutrient composition, and Ig content in colostrum of sows were determined. The number of dead fetuses was reduced, and farrowing survival was significantly improved in the litters from 300GSP-fed (P < 0.05). Preweaning survivability significantly increased in the litters from sows fed 200GSP and 200VE (P < 0.05). The activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the serum was significantly increased in sows fed 200GSP and 300GSP (P < 0.05). The activity of GSH-Px in the serum also significantly increased in sows fed 200VE (P < 0.05). Sows fed 300GSP had the greatest levels of P4 and E2 in the serum, which was significantly greater than sows fed 200VE and CON (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found among treatments for the content of solids-not-fat, fat, protein, and lactose in colostrum (P > 0.05). However, sows fed GSP had greater IgM and IgG content in colostrum compared with sows fed 200VE and CON (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary GSP supplementation during late gestation and lactation improved the farrowing survival and preweaning survivability, enhanced the antioxidant status and hormone levels in serum, and increased the IgM and IgG content in colostrum of sows.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between changes in the levels of selected hormones in serum and prostate tissue homogenate in regard to metabolic disorders in patients with diagnosed, surgically treated benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Patients and methods The study involved a group of 154 men with a diagnosis of BPH with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and without MetS. The serum levels of the hormones – total testosterone, free testosterone, insulin, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, estradiol, luteinizing hormone, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) – were determined using the ELISA method. Prostate tissue sections obtained from the patients during transurethral resection of the prostate were frozen in liquid nitrogen. We determined the levels of the same hormones. Results There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of serum SHBG levels, but not in the prostate tissue SHBG levels. A similar relationship was observed in regard to IGF-1, the serum levels of which were significantly higher in patients with MetS. MetS had an effect on the ratio of hormone levels in serum to their levels in the prostate tissue. Correlations between the levels of biochemical parameters and the levels of hormones in serum and the prostate tissue of BPH patients with and without MetS demonstrate that serum SHBG levels correlated weakly with waist size and triglyceride levels. Conclusion The occurrence of MetS in BPH patients was associated with changes in the levels of hormones and proteins. These changes, however, were not always equivalent to changes in the levels of these parameters in prostate tissue. It should also be mentioned that MetS in BPH patients had an influence on a quantitative balance between the levels of SHBG in serum and prostate tissue.

Abstract
The etiology of obesity is complex. Environmental and genetic causes have been implicated in the development of this disease. Ghrelin is a hormone known to stimulate appetite. There are numerous possible actions through which ghrelin exerts its effect in the body: a) Overproduction of ghrelin, b) reduced ghrelin following meals, and c) increased receptor sensitivity to ghrelin action. Sleeve gastrectomy, a bariatric procedure, leads to reduction of ghrelin levels and subsequently to weight loss. However, there are many limitations to measurement of the fasting plasma level of the active form of ghrelin. The establishment of the exact correlation between ghrelin, appetite and obesity could be vital for the fight against obesity.

Abstract
Tuber melanosporum (TM) is an edible fungus that exhibits antioxidant and anti-tumor activity via its unique bioactive metabolites. The present study analyzed the anti-fatigue effects of TM using a BALB/c mouse model. The anti-fatigue properties of TM were evaluated by assessing the endurance of mice by performing forced swimming, rotary rod and running tests. Following 2 weeks TM treatment, hepatic and muscular ATP, and glycogen levels were increased in mice subjected to 30 min swimming, compared with controls. Similarly, levels of serum lactic acid and lactic dehydrogenase were decreased in the same group, compared with the control. Additionally, TM treatment reduced reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde levels, and increased superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase levels in the muscle, liver and/or serum. The effect of TM on hormone levels was also investigated in the present study, as different efficacies of TM were observed in male and female mice. TM treatment increased serum levels of progesterone, estradiol and testosterone in female and male mice, whereas a decrease in serum luteinizing hormone levels was only observed in females. A decrease in serum follicle-stimulating hormone levels was identified in females, whereas an increase was observed in males. The current study demonstrated that the anti-fatigue effects of TM occur via the regulation of oxidative stress, energy metabolism and hormone levels.

Abstract
Introduction In recent years, epidemiological studies have strongly related obesity with an increased risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer. The aromatization of fatty tissue increases the levels of estradiol and adiponectin, which is correlated with the body mass index (BMI). It is of interest to investigate the effect of reducing BMI on estradiol, adiponectin, and IGF-1, as reducing BMI could be a new strategy to limit the risk of recurrence during the adjuvant treatment of breast cancer. Objective The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of reduced dietary fat on the levels of serum estradiol, adiponectin, and IGF-1 among postmenopausal Mexican women with breast cancer. Methods In this controlled clinical trial, 100 female patients were randomly divided into two groups and followed for six months. Group 1 (n = 50) was subjected to reduced dietary fat, whereas Group 2 (n = 50) was subjected to a control diet. The levels of serum estradiol and testosterone were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, whereas the concentrations of adiponectin and IGF-1 were determined using a radioimmunoassay. Results The patients subjected to reduced dietary fat showed a significant difference in BMI (27.93 ± 4.45 vs 26.05 ± 2.65; p = 0.01) and waist circumference (99.92 vs 91.59 cm; p = 0.0001) after the treatment. Moreover, a significant decrease in serum estradiol was observed (21.23 ± 14.32 vs 16.05 ± 10.25 ng/mL; p < 0.001). The adiponectin concentration also decreased significantly (47.53 ± 12.19 vs 42.52 ± 12.34 µg/mL; p = 0.004), while IGF-1 and testosterone did not show significant changes (p > 0.05). In addition, BMI had a relationship with serum adiponectin (r = −0.27; p = 0.02) and estradiol (r = 0.37; p = 0.001). Conclusion The current study shows that reducing BMI decreases serum estradiol and adiponectin. Large clinical trials are needed to investigate the role of adiponectin in breast cancer development in obese women.

Abstract
Recent experimental animal studies suggested that the circadian locomotor output cycles kaput protein gene (CLOCK) has been reported to play a critical role in sperm function and male fertility. The aim of this study was to determine whether variants of the CLOCK gene are involved in idiopathic male infertility. The study included 478 idiopathic infertile men and 194 fertile controls who completed physical examinations. Each subject donated 5 ml of peripheral blood and a sample of semen in the ejaculate. An aliquot of each blood sample was used to separate the serum for the measurement of testosterone as well as follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) using the standard radioimmunoassay. The rest of the blood samples was used to extract the DNA for the assay of three tagging single-nucleotide polymorphisms of CLOCK gene, viz., rs1801260, rs3817444 and rs3749474, using the real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR. The ejaculate of each subject was used for semen analysis by computer-assisted semen analysis system. The results indicated: (a) the variant rs1801260 associated with normal semen parameters was linked to a significant increase in the risk of idiopathic infertility, (b) the variant rs3817444 associated with both normal and abnormal semen parameters also indicated an increased risk of idiopathic infertility, and (c) the variants rs3749474 associated with both normal and abnormal semen parameters, on the other hand, conferred no significant risk for male infertility. Furthermore, elevated serum testosterone and FSH levels were correlated with the three variants of CLOCK gene in idiopathic infertility. The findings demonstrate that the human subjects with variants of the CLOCK gene are associated with idiopathic male infertility and therefore may be applied as a risk factor of male infertility.

Abstract
An increase in the use of molecular techniques has provided a significant insight into the function of genes, and how they are regulated and interact. However, in the field of plant hormone physiology, the increased use of these techniques has been accompanied by a reduction in the direct measurement of plant hormone levels by physiochemical methods. Instead, the transcript (mRNA) levels of genes involved in hormone metabolism are often used to predict endogenous hormone levels. The validity of this approach was recently tested by comparing the expression of a range of genes involved in BR synthesis, catabolism and perception, with the actual endogenous BR levels in pea seedlings grown under different light conditions.1,2 Based on this comparison, we now argue that gene expression analysis alone is not always a reliable indicator of endogenous hormone levels.

Abstract
As a counterpoint to studies that make a case for the use of oxytocin in short-term inhibition of food intake, the aim of the present study was to determine whether the peptide facilitates weight gain in female rats in a more long-term perspective. Two different variants of females Sprague-Dawley rats were used. The two variants differed in daily weight gain (0.38 g/day vs. 1.41 g/day during 28 days), and were designated slowly and rapidly growing rates (SGR and RGR) respectively. Oxytocin 1 mg/kg given s.c. to SGR for a five-day period increased weight gain significantly in comparison to a previous five-day period with NaCl-treatment (18.0 g/5 days versus 5.0 g/5 days; p < 0.01). In a separate study, oxytocin 1 mg/kg given for four days increased weight gain significantly in SGR versus saline-treated controls (7.5 g/4 days versus 1.6 g/4 days; p < 0.05). The weight-difference persisted six days later (p < 0.001). The weight increase of oxytocin occurred only during estrus (p < 0.05) and was not accompanied by any measurable increase in food intake. In RGR, oxytocin-treatment decreased food intake significantly (p < 0.001) and tended to decrease weight gain, although not significantly. The SGR and RGR also had different endocrine profiles with, for example, twice as high oxytocin (p < 0.01) and insulin levels (p < 0.01) in RGR compared to the SGR. These data suggest that oxytocin influences weight gain and food intake differently in the two variants of Sprague-Dawley rats, perhaps depending on factors such as endocrine profile and oxytocin sensitivity.
