Thwarted belongingness predicts greater neural reactivity to a novel social exclusion image set: Evidence from the late positive potential

INTRODUCTION

Thwarted belongingness (TB) is among the most well-researched risk factors for suicidal ideation (SI). Yet, there is little research examining neural mechanisms underlying this construct. The present study used a novel social exclusion image set in concert with the late positive potential (LPP) to test the role of neural reactivity social exclusion in TB and SI.

METHODS

Participants (n = 243) were recruited based on elevated suicide risk and completed an emotional picture viewing task. The LPP was used to index neural reactivity to a novel set of social exclusion images and international affective picture system (IAPS) neutral, positive, and negative images.

RESULTS

Greater TB predicted a larger social exclusion ΔLPP (social exclusion LPP relative to neutral LPP) and social exclusion LPP even when accounting for SI, biological sex, age, negative affect, and perceived burdensomeness. Moreover, the social exclusion LPP was uniquely related to TB beyond the LPP to other images. Last, a larger social exclusion LPP predicted greater SI via elevations in TB.

CONCLUSION

Reactivity to social exclusion stimuli may play an important role in SI via elevated TB, but not perceived burdensomeness. Future research should further explore the neural mechanisms underlying other IPT constructs.

The significance of the Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide in an oncological context-A scoping review

OBJECTIVES

Since individuals afflicted with cancer are at an elevated risk of dying by suicide, understanding suicide-related ideation and behaviours is critical in identifying vulnerable patients. The interpersonal theory of suicide (IPTS) provides a framework to research risk factors for suicide and has been validated in different samples. The aim of this scoping review is to study literature related to IPTS and cancer patients.

METHODS

This scoping review was registered with the OPEN Science Framework (osf.io/92465). The databases PsycINFO, Web of Science, PubMed and PubMed Central were searched. Eligible research needed to use a minimum of one psychometric element to measure at least one of the factors of the IPTS in individuals with cancer.

RESULTS

Ninety-six studies were identified and screened. Eligible research included individuals with cancer and the use of at least one measurement of at least one of the factors of the IPTS. Overall, four articles met the inclusion criteria and three studies found significant associations of components of the IPTS and suicidal ideation/behaviour.

CONCLUSION

While these initial findings support the notion that the IPTS is relevant for individuals with cancer as well, a direct validation of the IPTS in cancer patients is needed.

Short-term change and prediction of suicidal ideation among adolescents: a daily diary study following psychiatric hospitalization

BACKGROUND

Our understanding of suicidal ideation (SI) and its risk precursors is largely informed by studies spanning over wide time intervals (weeks, months, years). Little is known about SI as it occurs in daily lives of individuals at risk for suicide, the extent to which suicidal thoughts are dynamic over short periods of time, and the degree to which theoretically informed risk factors predict near-term SI.

METHODS

Thirty-four adolescents hospitalized due to last-month suicide attempt and/or last-week SI (76% female; ages 13-17) responded to daily surveys sent to their cell phones for four consecutive weeks after discharge (n = 652 observations).

RESULTS

There was notable variability in day-to-day SI, with half of ideation ratings changing at least one within-person standard deviation from one day to the next. Results of mixed effects models revealed concurrent (same-day), but not short-term prospective (next-day), associations between SI (frequency, duration, urge) and well-established predictors (connectedness, burdensomeness, hopelessness). However, synergistic effects of low connectedness with either high burdensomeness or high hopelessness were reliably associated with more severe same- and next-day suicidal ideation.

CONCLUSIONS

This study adds to emerging literature indicating that suicidal thoughts fluctuate considerably among individuals at risk for suicide, further extending it by focusing on adolescents in the critical posthospitalization period. Fostering high-risk adolescents' sense of connectedness to others may be an especially promising intervention target. Frequent assessment of SI and its predictors, independently and in combination, could help identify promising predictors of short-term risk and meaningful intervention targets in high-risk teens.

Perceived burdensomeness and suicide-related behaviors in clinical samples: current evidence and future directions

CONTEXT

The interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide identifies perceived burdensomeness as a primary component of suicidal desire and a possible point of intervention for suicide prevention. A growing literature has explored the relationship between perceived burdensomeness and suicide-related behaviors.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this review is to integrate the evidence, identify critical gaps in the evidence-base, and explore implications for translation to prevention and intervention science.

METHODS

Papers published that reported on the association between perceived burdensomeness and suicide-related behaviors were included.

RESULTS

The literature indicates (a) significant cross-sectional associations between perceived burdensomeness and suicidal ideation and suicide attempts and (b) that perceived burdensomeness acts as either a moderator or a mediator of the association between risk and protective factors and suicide-related behaviors.

CONCLUSION

Research is needed to examine the longitudinal association between perceived burdensomeness and suicide-related behaviors, develop additional measurement approaches, generalize findings to other samples, and begin translating findings to prevention and intervention science.

An interactive model of anxiety sensitivity relevant to suicide attempt history and future suicidal ideation

Recent reports of increasing suicide rates among military personnel indicate a need for increased work in understanding processes relevant to suicide risk in the military. Anxiety, along with anxiety-related risk factors have been implicated in suicidality as well as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One such risk factor, anxiety sensitivity (AS), refers to fear of anxiety-related symptoms. Subfactors of AS, notably the physical and cognitive concerns factors, appear to be relevant to the construct of acquired capability for suicidal behavior, a risk factor for death by suicide postulated by the Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (Joiner, 2005; Van Orden et al., 2010). Study 1 examined the interaction of AS-cognitive concerns and AS-physical concerns in an outpatient sample with PTSD symptomatology (N = 128). Analyses were consistent with our a priori model and indicated that the interaction of AS-cognitive concerns by AS-physical concerns predicted previous suicide attempt. Specifically, those with high AS-cognitive concerns and low AS-physical concerns were at increased risk for suicide attempt. Study 2 prospectively examined the associations between AS and suicidal ideation in a sample of military cadets undergoing basic training (N = 1081). A similar interaction emerged such that high AS-cognitive and low AS-physical scores at Time 1 significantly predicted suicidal ideation several months later, even after controlling for Time 1 suicidal ideation and psychopathology. These findings suggest that suicide potential may be related to interactions between cognitive risk factors for anxiety among individuals with PTSD symptomatology as well as individuals experiencing stressful life events.

The model integrates the points discussed by Joiner into a unified and specific conceptualization of acquired capability. Several points are elaborated on, such as the interaction between specific diatheses with life events, the role of short-term bolstering of the capability for suicide, and how contextual factors moderate the experience of painful and provocative life events; thereby leading to fearlessness and pain insensitivity to the actions and ideas involved in suicide.
