Review: 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) Deposition Methods on Oxide Surfaces in Solution and Vapor Phases for Biosensing Applications

Surface functionalization and bioreceptor immobilization are critical processes in developing a highly sensitive and selective biosensor. The silanization process with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) on oxide surfaces is frequently used for surface functionalization because of beneficial characteristics such as its bifunctional nature and low cost. Optimizing the deposition process of the APTES layer to obtain a monolayer is crucial to having a stable surface and effectively immobilizing the bioreceptors, which leads to the improved repeatability and sensitivity of the biosensor. This review provides an overview of APTES deposition methods, categorized into the solution-phase and vapor-phase, and a comprehensive summary and guide for creating stable APTES monolayers on oxide surfaces for biosensing applications. A brief explanation of APTES is introduced, and the APTES deposition methods with their pre/post-treatments and characterization results are discussed. Lastly, APTES deposition methods on nanoparticles used for biosensors are briefly described.

Enhancement of the Rashba Effect in a Conducting SrTiO3 Surface by MoO3 Capping

Systems having inherent structural asymmetry retain the Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction, which ties the spin and momentum of electrons in the band structure, leading to coupled spin and charge transport. One of the electrical manifestations of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction is nonreciprocal charge transport, which could be utilized for rectifying devices. Further tuning of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction allows additional functionalities in spin-orbitronic applications. In this work, we present our study of nonreciprocal charge transport in a conducting SrTiO3 (001) surface and its significant enhancement by a capping layer. The conductive strontium titanate SrTiO3 (STO) (001) surface was created through oxygen vacancies by Ar+ irradiation, and the nonreciprocal signal was probed by angle- and magnetic field-dependent second harmonic voltage measurement with an AC current. We observed robust directional transport in the Ar+-irradiated sample at low temperatures. The magnitude of the nonreciprocal signal is highly dependent on the irradiation time as it affects the depth of the conducting layer and the impact of the topmost conducting layer. Moreover, the nonreciprocal resistance was significantly enhanced by simply adding a MoO3 capping layer on the conductive STO surface. These results show a simple methodology for tuning and investigating the Rashba effect in a conductive STO surface, which could be adopted for various two-dimensional (2D) conducting layers for spin-orbitronic applications.

Hybrid Li/Na Ion Batteries: Temperature-Induced Reactivity of Three-Layered Oxide (P3-Na2/3Ni1/3Mg1/6Mn1/2O2) Toward Lithium Ionic Liquid Electrolytes

Hybrid metal ion batteries are perceived as competitive alternatives to lithium ion batteries because they provide better balance between energy/power density, battery cost, and environmental requirements. However, their cycling stability and high-temperature storage performance are still far from the desired. Herein, we first examine the temperature-induced reactivity of three-layered oxide, P3-Na_2/3Ni_1/3Mg_1/6Mn_1/2O₂, toward lithium ionic liquid electrolyte upon cycling in hybrid Li/Na ion cells. Through ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, the structural and surface changes in P3-Na_2/3Ni_1/3Mg_1/6Mn_1/2O₂ are monitored and discussed. Understanding the relevant changes occurring during dual Li⁺ and Na⁺ intercalation into P3-Na_2/3Ni_1/3Mg_1/6Mn_1/2O₂ is of crucial importance to enhance the overall performance of hybrid Li/Na ion batteries at elevated temperatures.

Oxidation of alkyl benzenes by a flavin photooxidation catalyst on nanostructured metal-oxide films

We describe here a surface-bound, oxide-based procedure for the photooxidation of a family of aromatic hydrocarbons by a phosphate-bearing flavin mononucleotide (FMN) photocatalyst on high surface area metal-oxide films.

Trends in Adhesion Energies of Metal Nanoparticles on Oxide Surfaces: Understanding Support Effects in Catalysis and Nanotechnology

Nanoparticles on surfaces are ubiquitous in nanotechnologies, especially in catalysis, where metal nanoparticles anchored to oxide supports are widely used to produce and use fuels and chemicals, and in pollution abatement. We show that for hemispherical metal particles of the same diameter, D, the chemical potentials of the metal atoms in the particles (μ_M) differ between two supports by approximately -2(E_adh,A - E_adh,B)V_m/D, where E_ad,i is the adhesion energy between the metal and support i, and V_m is the molar volume of the bulk metal. This is consistent with calorimetric measurements of metal vapor adsorption energies onto clean oxide surfaces where the metal grows as 3D particles, which proved that μ_M increases with decreasing particle size below 6 nm and, for a given size, decreases with E_adh. Since catalytic activity and sintering rates correlate with metal chemical potential, it is thus crucial to understand what properties of catalyst materials control metal/oxide adhesion energies. Trends in how E_adh varies with the metal and the support oxide are presented. For a given oxide, E_adh increases linearly from metal to metal with increasing heat of formation of the most stable oxide of the metal (per mole metal), or metal oxophilicity, suggesting that metal-oxygen bonds dominate interfacial bonding. For the two different stoichiometric oxide surfaces that have been studied on multiple metals (MgO(100) and CeO₂(111), the slopes of these lines are the same, but their offset is large (∼2 J/m²). Adhesion energies increase as MgO(100) ≈ TiO₂(110) < α-Al₂O₃(0001) < CeO₂(111) ≈ Fe₃O₄(111).

Anisotropic two-dimensional electron gas at SrTiO3(110)

Two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) at oxide heterostructures are attracting considerable attention, as these might one day substitute conventional semiconductors at least for some functionalities. Here we present a minimal setup for such a 2DEG--the SrTiO3(110)-(4 × 1) surface, natively terminated with one monolayer of tetrahedrally coordinated titania. Oxygen vacancies induced by synchrotron radiation migrate underneath this overlayer; this leads to a confining potential and electron doping such that a 2DEG develops. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical results show that confinement along (110) is strikingly different from the (001) crystal orientation. In particular, the quantized subbands show a surprising "semiheavy" band, in contrast with the analog in the bulk, and a high electronic anisotropy. This anisotropy and even the effective mass of the (110) 2DEG is tunable by doping, offering a high flexibility to engineer the properties of this system.
