Quasi-BIC Mode Lasing in a Quadrumer Plasmonic Lattice

Plasmonic lattices of metal nanoparticles have emerged as an effective platform for strong light-matter coupling, lasing, and Bose-Einstein condensation. However, the full potential of complex unit cell structures has not been exploited. On the other hand, bound states in continuum (BICs) have attracted attention, as they provide topologically protected optical modes with diverging quality factors. Here, we show that quadrumer nanoparticle lattices enable lasing in a quasi-BIC mode with a highly out-of-plane character. By combining theory with polarization-resolved measurements of the emission, we show that the lasing mode has a topological charge. Our analysis reveals that the mode is primarily polarized out-of-plane as a result of the quadrumer structure. The quality factors of the out-of-plane BIC modes of the quadrumer array can be exceedingly high. Our results unveil the power of complex multiparticle unit cells in creating topologically protected high-Q modes in periodic nanostructures.

Synergistic Effect of Fe Doping and Plasmonic Au Nanoparticles on W18O49 Nanorods for Enhancing Photoelectrochemical Nitrogen Reduction

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) nitrogen fixation has opened up new possibilities for the production of ammonia from water and air under mild conditions, but this process is confronted by the inherent challenges associated with theoretical and experimental works, limiting the efficiency of the nitrogen reduction reaction. Herein, we report for the first time a novel and efficient photoelectrocatalytic system, which has been prepared by assembling plasmonic Au nanoparticles with Fe-doped W₁₈O₄₉ nanorods (denoted as WOF-Au). (i) The introduction of exotic Fe atoms into nonstoichiometric W₁₈O₄₉ can eliminate bulk defects of the W₁₈O₄₉ host, which resulted in narrowing bandgap energy and facilitating electron-hole separation and transportation. (ii) Meanwhile, Au nanoparticles combined with a semiconductor induce the localized surface plasmon resonance and generate energetic (hot) electrons, increasing electron density on W₁₈O₄₉ nanorods. Consequently, this plasmonic WOF-Au system shows an NH₃ production yield of 9.82 μg h^-1 cm^-2 at -0.65 V versus Ag/AgCl, which is ∼2.5-folds higher than that of the WOF (without Au loading), as well as very high stability, and no NH₃ formation was found for the bare W₁₈O₄₉ (WO). This high activity can be associated with the synergistic effects between the Fe dopant and plasmonic Au NPs on the host semiconductor W₁₈O₄₉. This work can bring some insights into the target-directed design of efficient plasmonic hybrid systems for N₂ fixation and artificial photocatalysis.

Substituted Naphthalenediimide Compounds Bind Selectively to Two Human Quadruplex Structures with Parallel Topology

Interactions are reported of three representative naphthalenediimide derivatives with three quadruplex targets, from the promoter region of the telomerase (hTERT) gene, a human telomeric DNA quadruplex, and a telomeric RNA quadruplex (TERRA). Thermal melting studies showed that these compounds strongly stabilize the quadruplexes, with weak stabilization of a duplex DNA. Binding studies by surface plasmon resonance and fluorescence spectroscopy found that the compounds bind to the quadruplexes with nanomolar equilibrium dissociation constants. Plausible topologies for the quadruplex complexes were deduced from CD spectra, which together with the surface plasmon resonance data indicate that the quadruplexes with parallel quadruplex folds are preferred by two compounds, which was confirmed by qualitative molecular modeling.

Dielectrophoresis-enhanced plasmonic sensing with gold nanohole arrays

We experimentally demonstrate dielectrophoretic concentration of biological analytes on the surface of a gold nanohole array, which concurrently acts as a nanoplasmonic sensor and gradient force generator. The combination of nanohole-enhanced dielectrophoresis, electroosmosis, and extraordinary optical transmission through the periodic gold nanohole array enables real-time label-free detection of analyte molecules in a 5 μL droplet using concentrations as low as 1 pM within a few minutes, which is more than 1000 times faster than purely diffusion-based binding. The nanohole-based optofluidic platform demonstrated here is straightforward to construct, applicable to both charged and neutral molecules, and performs a novel function that cannot be accomplished using conventional surface plasmon resonance sensors.
