Integrative attitudes of Ukrainian war refugees in two neighboring European countries (Poland and Hungary) in connection with posttraumatic stress symptoms and social support

Since February 24th, 2022, millions of Ukrainians have sought refuge in other, mainly European countries. Hungary, after Poland, is the second largest host of Ukrainian refugees. Only a portion of them are asylum seekers (~11.0% in Poland and ~ 1.1% in Hungary). The aim of the study is to compare the integrative acculturation attitudes between the war refugees residing in the two European countries. The comparison takes into account both the suffering of posttraumatic stress symptoms and social support. It is the first comparative study of this kind pertaining to the Ukrainian refugees in European countries. The data were obtained by a survey method using the modified CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interview) technique. The data analyzed were collected between November 21st and December 20th, 2022 from 728 adult Ukrainian individuals who crossed the borders of Poland and Hungary after February 24th, 2022. The research results show that refugees in Poland perceive significantly more social support and show stronger integrative attitudes than refugees in Hungary. The two samples do not differ regarding the presence of posttraumatic stress. The integrative attitudes proved not to be linked to gender and age, but linked to the host country. Besides social support and the host country, posttraumatic stress also proved to be a significant predictor of integrative attitudes.

Stroke Characteristics in a Cohort of Hmong American Patients

Background Prior studies have indicated high rates of vascular risk factors, but little is known about stroke in Hmong. Methods and Results The institutional Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) database was used to identify patients discharged with acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, or subarachnoid hemorrhage between 2010 and 2019. Hmong patients were identified using clan names and primary language. Univariate analysis was used to compare Hmong and White patients. A subarachnoid hemorrhage comparison was not conducted because of the small sample size. We identified 128 Hmong patients and 3084 White patients. Hmong patients had more prevalent hemorrhagic stroke (31% versus 15%; P<0.0016). In the acute ischemic stroke cohort, compared with White patients, Hmong patients were younger (60±13 versus 71±15 years; P<0.0001), presented to the emergency department almost 4 hours later; and had a lower thrombolysis usage rate (6% versus 14%; P=0.03496), worse lipid profile, higher hemoglobin A1C, similar stroke severity, and less frequent discharge to rehabilitation facilities. The most common ischemic stroke mechanism for Hmong patients was small-vessel disease. In the intracerebral hemorrhage cohort, Hmong patients were younger (55±13 versus 70±15 years; P<0.0001), had higher blood pressure, and had a lower rate of independent ambulation on discharge (9% versus 30%; P=0.0041). Conclusions Hmong patients with stroke were younger and had poorer risk factor control compared with White patients. There was a significant delay in emergency department arrival and low use of acute therapies among the Hmong acute ischemic stroke cohort. Larger studies are needed to confirm these observations, but action is urgently needed to close gaps in primary care and stroke health literacy.

Fake news during the war in Ukraine: coping strategies and fear of war in the general population of Romania and in aid workers

Introduction

In addition to the health crisis that erupted during the COVID-19 pandemic, the war between Russia and Ukraine is impacting the mental health and wellbeing of the Romanian population in a negative way.

Objectives

This study sets out to investigate the impact that social media consumption and an overload of information related to the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine is having on the distribution of fake news among Romanians. In addition, it explores the way in which several psychological features, including resilience, general health, perceived stress, coping strategies, and fear of war, change as a function of exposure to traumatic events or interaction with victims of war.

Methods

Participants (N = 633) completed the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), the CERQ scale with its nine subscales, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the BRS scale (Brief Resilience Scale), the last of which measures resilience. Information overload, information strain and the likelihood of the person concerned spreading fake news were assessed by adapting items related to these variables.

Findings

Our results suggest that information strain partially moderates the relationship between information overload and the tendency to spread false information. Also, they indicate that information strain partially moderates the relationship between time spent online and the tendency to spread false information. Furthermore, our findings imply that there are differences of high and moderate significance between those who worked with refugees and those who did not as regards fear of war and coping strategies. We found no practical differences between the two groups as regards general health, level of resilience and perceived stress.

Conclusion and recommendations

The importance of discovering the reasons why people share false information is discussed, as is the need to adopt strategies to combat this behavior, including infographics and games designed to teach people how to detect fake news. At the same time, aid workers need to be further supported to maintain a high level of psychological wellbeing.

Retrospective analysis of treatment, including access to breast reconstructions, of breast cancer patients - war refugees from Ukraine in Poland - the experience of a single tertiary care institution

<b>Introduction:</b> Following the Russian invasion, more than 3600000 refugees have fled Ukraine and settled down in Poland; this group includes a growing number of breast cancer patients whose treatment had been started in Ukraine and hence required urgent therapy in Poland.</br></br> <b>Aim:</b> The aim of the study was to analyze the treatment of breast cancer patients from Ukraine, who entered Poland as war refugees - the experience of a single tertiary care institution.</br></br> <b>Material and methods:</b> The treatment of 25 consecutive breast cancer patients, war refugees from Ukraine was reviewed retrospectively.</br></br> <b>Results:</b> Patients were treated according to subtype and staging, e.g. surgery, endocrine, anti-HER2 therapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy. 7 patients received an immediate implant, mesh-based breast reconstruction. In 2 cases, the patients refused breast reconstruction.</br></br> <b>Conclusions:</b> Nearly 5.5 million refugees across Europe who have fled the combat zones in Ukraine; of these, the vast majority sought shelter in Poland, and many of whom are women. It is expected that breast cancer mortality rates may rise and progress in oncology may slow as the war in Ukraine disrupts routine patient care, clinical trials and research. Hence, support from neighboring countries is mandatory.

The Effects of Art Therapy on Anxiety and Distress for Korean-Ukrainian Refugee: Quasi-Experimental Design Study

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, there has been an urgent need to provide mental healthcare and share various practices for Ukrainian war refugees. This study urgently focuses on the need for art therapy to support the mental health of Ukrainian refugees, Koryo-saram, who are staying in the Republic of Korea due to the wartime emergency. It also examines the impact of art therapy intervention on anxiety and subjective stress. The single-session art therapy with the 54 Koryo-saram refugees aged 13-68 showed the effectiveness of the art therapy intervention. The results indicate that GAD-7 (t = 3.092, p = 0.003) and SUDs (t = 3.335, p = 0.002) were statistically significant within the intervention group. In addition, satisfaction assessments of the qualitatively analyzed participants showed that Ukrainian Koryo-saram had a positive experience of art therapy. Therefore single-session art therapy in this study demonstrated the efficacy of art therapy for the anxiety and subjective distress of Ukrainian Koryo-saram refugees. This result suggests that the intervention of art therapy as immediate mental healthcare for refugees facing war could benefit the mental health of Koryo-saram refugees.

Describing Racial Disparity in Hypertension Control in a Large Minnesota Outpatient Practice

Introduction

This analysis is a part of ongoing quality improvement efforts aiming at improving hypertension control among various racial minority groups seen in a large outpatient practice with a special focus on two war refugee populations, the Hmong and the Somali populations.

Method

Deidentified medical records were reviewed for adult hypertensive patients who had an outpatient encounter with a hypertension diagnosis during the years 2015 through 2019. The study outcome was the rate of uncontrolled hypertension, defined as systolic blood pressure ≥140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mm Hg, and stratified by race, age, and gender.

Results

There were 752,504 patient records representing 259,824 unique patients (mean age 61 ± 13 years) with 49.1% women, 82.1% white 8.3% African American, 4% Asian, 1.6% Hispanic, Somali 0.6%, and 0.2% Hmong. Hmong men had the highest rate of uncontrolled HTN (33.6%) followed by African American (31.3%) then Somali (29.2%). Among women, African Americans had the highest rate (28.6%) followed by Hmong (28.5%) then Somali (25.7%). In all races except Somali, the rate of uncontrolled hypertension was highest in the 18-29 age group, decreased progressively over the next several decades, then increased again in the ≥70 age group.

Conclusion

Hmong, African American, and Somali groups have the highest rates of uncontrolled hypertension. Efforts to address hypertension management need to be tailored to the specific characteristics of each racial group and to target young adults.

Hospitalizations of Ukrainian Migrants and Refugees in Poland in the Time of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict

BACKGROUND

In the face of a sudden influx of several million migrants and war refugees from Ukraine to other European countries, knowledge about the health of Ukrainian citizens becomes increasingly important. The aim of the study is to identify the main health problems of hospitalized Ukrainian citizens residing in Poland in the period from 2014 to June 2022.

METHODS

This study is based on hospitalization data of Ukrainian patients in Poland taken from the Nationwide General Hospital Morbidity Study.

RESULTS

The study group covered 8591 hospitalization records. We observed two hospitalization peaks, one in patients aged 0-5 and the other one in those aged 20-35. After the official outbreak of the war, 2231 Ukrainian citizens were hospitalized in Poland. At this time, the most often reported principal reasons for the hospitalizations of adult women were diseases related to pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium, whereas in groups of adult men diseases were related to injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes, and in children and adolescents diseases were infectious and parasitic diseases.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings may have implications for healthcare policies and service provision to newly arrived migrants and war refugees in target European countries.

Volunteering in the front line of the Ukrainian refugee crisis: A brief report from Poland

This study aims to analyse the experiences and motivations of volunteers who supported Ukrainian refugees who fled to Poland. Our study was conducted among 196 volunteers in Poznan, Poland who answered questions regarding their experiences with voluntary service during the current refugee crisis and the reasons they became involved in volunteer efforts. We found that although the Polish state had no prior experience in welcoming refugees on a mass scale, the Russo-Ukrainian War has resulted in the emergence of "spontaneous volunteers" who have offered their help and assistance to the flood of refugees sweeping in from its eastern neighbor. We also found that because many Polish citizens believe that helping those in need should not rest solely on the government there are two main motivations to volunteer: a general willingness to help and the willingness to volunteer on behalf of Ukrainian refugees. Finally, while this study highlights that in times of crisis, most people are primarily motivated by humanistic and democratic values, including altruism and public service, emotions also play an important role in influencing people's decision to engage in voluntary service.

Vaccination of Ukrainian Refugees: Need for Urgent Action

The unprovoked aggression of Russian military forces on Ukraine in February 2022 has caused a high influx of refugees, including children, to neighboring countries, particularly Poland. This caused additional pressures on the healthcare system and the need to meet challenges for public health, such as those related to infectious diseases. Here, we discuss the potential epidemiological risks associated with the war-induced influx of refugees (coronavirus disease 2019, measles, pertussis, tetanus, and poliomyelitis) and highlight the need for their swift management through institutional support, educational campaigns, counteracting antiscience misinformation, and pursuing vaccinations of refugees but also improving or maintaining good levels of immunization in populations of countries welcoming them. These are necessary actions to avoid overlapping of war and infectious diseases and associated public health challenges.
