Abstract
Sole ulcers are reportedly one of the most prevalent diseases associated with lameness in dairy cattle, significantly affecting animal welfare and farm profitability. The degree to which sole soft tissues, healthy or ulcerated, are able to maintain their structure and function when subjected to compressive forces remains unknown. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to assess sole tissue biomechanics in healthy and ulcerated claws and to describe correlated histology. Cylindrical samples were harvested from zones 4 and 6, as described by the international foot map, from hind lateral healthy (n = 12) and ulcerated bovine claws (n = 8; animals n = 12). Tissue biomechanics and morphology were evaluated via compressive tests and hematoxylin-eosin-phloxine-saffron staining, respectively. A 2-sample t-test was used to compare zones' mechanical properties between healthy and ulcerated tissues, and the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test was used to measure the effect of claw zone on histology. The fibril modulus (Ef) and permeability (k) respectively increased and decreased in ulcerated claws (Ef = 0.201 ± 0.104 MPa; k = 0.128 ± 0.069 mm2/MPa·s) compared with healthy claws (Ef = 0.105 ± 0.050 MPa; k = 0.452 ± 0.365 mm2/MPa·s) only for zone 6. Histology scores equal to or greater than 3 were associated with macroscopic presence of ulceration. A higher proportion of adipose tissue (30% or more) was associated with zone 6 compared with zone 4, but no difference was seen between healthy and ulcerated claws. Ulcerated claws had a higher prevalence of exostoses compared with healthy ones (33% vs. 8%). Sole soft tissues showed, as hypothesized, a viscoelastic behavior using unconfined compression testing, which, however, may not reflect in vivo loading conditions. Clinical and histological signs of sole ulceration were not associated with decreased strength of the supportive apparatus of the distal phalanx in zone 4 in this study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The utility of fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring can only be achieved with an acquisition sampling rate that preserves the underlying physiological information on the millisecond time scale (1000 Hz rather than 4 Hz). For such acquisition, fetal ECG (fECG) is required, rather than the ultrasound to derive FHR. We tested one recently developed algorithm, SAVER, and two widely applied algorithms to extract fECG from a single-channel maternal ECG signal recorded over the xyphoid process rather than the routine abdominal signal. APPROACH At 126dG, ECG was attached to near-term ewe and fetal shoulders, manubrium and xyphoid processes (n = 12). fECG served as the ground-truth to which the fetal ECG signal extracted from the simultaneously-acquired maternal ECG was compared. All fetuses were in good health during surgery (pH 7.29 ± 0.03, pO2 33.2 ± 8.4, pCO2 56.0 ± 7.8, O2Sat 78.3 ± 7.6, lactate 2.8 ± 0.6, BE -0.3 ± 2.4). MAIN RESULT In all animals, single lead fECG extraction algorithm could not extract fECG from the maternal ECG signal over the xyphoid process with the F1 less than 50%. SIGNIFICANCE The applied fECG extraction algorithms might be unsuitable for the maternal ECG signal over the xyphoid process, or the latter does not contain strong enough fECG signal, although the lead is near the mother's abdomen. Fetal sheep model is widely used to mimic various fetal conditions, yet ECG recordings in a public data set form are not available to test the predictive ability of fECG and FHR. We are making this data set openly available to other researchers to foster non-invasive fECG acquisition in this animal model.

Abstract
Background Diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) lesions in recumbent dairy cattle (RDC) is challenging because neurologic examination is limited and medical imaging often is challenging or unrewarding. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis is useful in the diagnosis of CNS disorders in cattle. However, its utility in identifying spinal cord lesions in RDC remains to be evaluated. Hypothesis/Objectives We hypothesized that CSF analysis would discriminate between RDC with and without spinal cord lesions. Animals Twenty‐one RDC with spinal cord lesions (RDC+) and 19 without (RDC−) were evaluated. Methods Spinal cord lesions were confirmed at necropsy. Signalment, clinical findings, and CSF results were compared retrospectively. Total nucleated cell count and differential, protein concentration, and red blood cell count in RDC+ and RDC− were compared. Results Neoplasia, trauma, and infectious processes were the most frequent spinal cord lesions identified. Cerebrospinal fluid protein concentrations and TNCC were significantly higher in RDC+ compared to RDC− (P = .0092 and P = .0103, respectively). Additionally, CSF protein concentrations and TNCC in RDC− were lower than previously published reference ranges. Using an interpretation rule based on CSF protein concentration and TNCC, it was possible to accurately identify 13 RDC with spinal cord lesions and 6 RDC without lesions. It was not possible to determine spinal cord status in the remaining 18 RDC. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Cerebrospinal fluid analysis is valuable in the evaluation of spinal cord status in RDC. The prognosis associated with these findings remains to be determined.

Abstract
Background The signalment, clinicopathologic, bacteriological, histopathological, ultrasonographic characteristics, and the treatment and outcomes of adult cattle with cholangiohepatitis are poorly defined. Animals Thirteen Holstein cows with cholangiohepatitis. Methods Retrospective study of medical records of cattle admitted to the CHUV and the AVC between 1992 and 2012 and 2000 and 2012, respectively, for cattle older than 3 months of age with a histopathological diagnosis of cholangiohepatitis. Cholangiohepatitis was defined as the presence of portal inflammation surrounding or infiltrating bile ducts, with or without epithelial damage, and extending into the adjacent lobules. Results At the time of diagnosis of cholangiohepatitis, cows had decreased appetite (n = 7) or were anorectic (n = 6), had fever (n = 5), and had tachycardia (n = 8). Icterus was detected in 5 cows. Yellow discoloration was identified on the skin of the udder (n = 3), conjunctiva (n = 2), and vulva (n = 1). There was leukocytosis (n = 6), neutrophilia (n = 9), and hyperfibrinogenemia (n = 8). Alteration in the serum biochemistry profile included hyperglobulinemia (n = 8), hypoalbuminemia (n = 10), increased activity of GGT (n = 12), AST (n = 8), and ALP (n = 10), and hyperbilirubinemia (n = 10). Histopathological diagnosis included mild, subacute, nonsuppurative cholangiohepatitis (n = 4), mild suppurative cholangiohepatitis (n = 4), mild mixed (neutrophilic and lymphocytic) cholangiohepatitis (n = 3), and moderate, chronic, nonsuppurative cholangiohepatitis (n = 1). Six cows were discharged from the hospital, and 7 were euthanized. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Cholangiohepatitis is a rare condition in adult cattle. Antemortem diagnosis can be challenging because clinical signs are unspecific.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The chronically instrumented fetal sheep is a widely used animal model to study fetal brain development in health and disease, but no methods exist yet to interrogate dedicated brain cell populations to identify their molecular and genomic phenotype. For example, the molecular mechanisms whereby microglia or astrocytes contribute to inflammation in the brain remain incompletely understood. NEW METHOD Here we present a protocol to derive primary pure microglial or astrocyte cultures from near-term fetal sheep brain, after the animals have been chronically instrumented and studied in vivo. Next, we present the implementation of whole transcriptome sequencing (RNAseq) pipeline to deeper elucidate the phenotype of such primary sheep brain glial cultures. RESULTS We validate the new primary cultures method for cell purity and test the function of the glial cells on protein (IL-1β) and transcriptome (RNAseq) levels in response to a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge in vitro. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS This method represents the first implementation of pure microglial or astrocytes cultures in fetal sheep brain. CONCLUSIONS The presented approach opens new possibilities for testing not only supernatant protein levels in response to an in vitro challenge, but also to evaluate changes in the transcriptome of glial cells derived from a large mammalian brain bearing high resemblance to the human brain. Moreover, the presented approach lends itself to modeling the complex multi-hit paradigms of antenatal and perinatal cerebral insults in vivo and in vitro.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis occurs in horses with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Peripheral resistance to glucocorticoids has not been investigated in horses. OBJECTIVE To determine if glucocorticoid receptor (GR) function in horses can be measured using flow cytometry, and to use this information to evaluate HPA axis dynamics. ANIMALS Eleven healthy adult horses in parts 1 and 2. Ten horses with SIRS and 10 age and sex matched controls in part 3. METHODS Flow cytometry was used to evaluate GR density and binding affinity (BA) in 3 healthy horses in part 1. In part 2, exogenous ACTH was administered to eight healthy horses. Their cortisol response and GR properties were measured. In part 3, CBC, serum biochemistry, cortisol and ACTH, and GR properties were compared between controls without SIRS (n = 10) and horses with SIRS (n = 10), and between survivors and nonsurvivors (n = 4 and n = 6 respectively). RESULTS Flow cytometry can be used to measure GR properties in equine PBMCs. No correlation was observed between plasma cortisol concentration and GR density or BA in healthy horses (r = -0.145, P = .428 and r = 0.046, P = .802 respectively). Nonsurvivors with SIRS had significantly decreased GR BA (P = .008). Horses with triglyceride concentration > 28.5 mg/dL had increased odds of nonsurvival (OR=117; 95% CI, 1.94-7,060). GR BA <35.79% was associated with nonsurvival (OR = 30.33; 95% CI, 0.96-960.5). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Tissue resistance to glucocorticoids contributes to HPA axis dysfunction in adult horses with SIRS. These horses might benefit from treatment with exogenous glucocorticoids.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The neonatal period is associated with high morbidity and mortality in cloned calves. OBJECTIVE To describe morbidity and mortality in cloned calves from birth to 2 years of age. ANIMALS Thirty-one somatic cell-derived Holstein calves delivered at a veterinary teaching hospital. METHODS Medical files were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS Four calves were stillborn. Five calves born alive had physical congenital defects. Twenty-three calves had an enlarged umbilical cord. Laboratory abnormalities included acidemia, respiratory acidosis, hyperlactatemia, anemia, stress leukogram, decreased total protein, albumin and globulins, and increased creatinine. Twenty-five calves survived the 1st hour of life. Among them, 11 stood without assistance within 6 hours of birth, 10 calves took longer than 6 hours to stand, and 4 never stood. Twenty-two calves suffered from anorexia. Twelve calves had complications arising from umbilical cord infections. Three calves developed idiopathic hyperthermia (>40°C). Eight calves suffered from gastrointestinal problems, including ruminal distension, abomasal ulcers, neonatal enteritis, intussusception, and abomasal displacement. Mortality between birth and 3 weeks of age was 32% (10/31). Causes of death and reasons for euthanasia included stillbirths, respiratory failure, and limb deformities. Mortality between 3 weeks and 2 years of age was 19% (4/21), with deaths in this group attributed to generalized peritonitis and complications arising from umbilical infections. Overall, mortality rate within 2 years of age was 14/31 (45%). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Respiratory problems, limb deformities, and umbilical infections were the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in these cloned calves.

Abstract
Major landscape changes caused by humans may create strong selection pressures and induce rapid evolution in natural populations. In the last 100 years, eastern North America has experienced extensive clear-cutting in boreal areas, while afforestation has occurred in most temperate areas. Based on museum specimens, I show that wings of several boreal forest songbirds and temperate songbirds of non-forest habitats have become more pointed over the last 100 years. In contrast, wings of most temperate forest and early-successional boreal forests species have become less pointed over the same period. In contrast to wing shape, the bill length of most species did not change significantly through time. These results are consistent with the "habitat isolation hypothesis", i.e., songbirds evolved in response to recent changes in the amount of available habitat and associated implications for mobility. Rapid morphological evolution may mitigate, without necessarily preventing, negative consequences of habitat loss caused by humans through direct exploitation or climate change.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to determine whether a dietary supplementation of folic acid, at levels used in our previous studies, would affect ruminal fermentation and the net flux of nutrients across the rumen wall of lactating dairy cows. Approximately 4 wk after calving, 5 lactating multiparous cows were surgically equipped with a ruminal cannula, an ultrasonic flow probe around the right ruminal artery, and indwelling catheters in the right ruminal vein and the ileocolic artery. Cows were fed a total mixed ration served in 7 equal meals per d (i.e., every 3.4 h). The experimental design was an unbalanced crossover arrangement with 3 periods of 4 wk each. The vitamin supplement, incorporated in equal amounts into each meal, was supplied at 0, 3, or 6 mg of folic acid per kg of BW per d. During the last week of each experimental period, blood samples were taken simultaneously from the 2 catheters every 30 min and rumen fluid was collected every 60 min during 2 consecutive meal intervals. Dietary supplementation with folic acid had no effect on milk production (27.2 +/- 1.3 kg/d) or DMI (19.9 +/- 0.7 kg/d), but milk concentrations and yields of total solids, fat, and protein increased linearly with increasing doses of folic acid ingested. Concentrations of folates in rumen fluid and arterial plasma, averaged over time, increased linearly with the dose of folic acid ingested but the net flux of folates across the rumen wall was not different from zero. Concentrations of butyrate in ruminal fluid decreased quadratically with the daily supply in folic acid. Dietary supplements of folic acid had no effect on pH and osmolality of ruminal fluid, nor on ruminal concentrations of lactate, ammonia, acetate, or propionate, total VFA, or microbial counts. The uptake of urea-N by the rumen wall tended to increase quadratically with the dose ingested but net fluxes of other nutrients were not affected by treatments. These results suggest that the effects of folic acid supplements on lactational performance cannot be explained by effects on rumen metabolism.

Abstract
The present experiment was undertaken to determine the effects of dietary supplements of rumen-protected methionine and intramuscular injections of folic acid and vitamin B(12), given 3 wk before to 16 wk after calving, on glucose and methionine metabolism of lactating dairy cows. Twenty-four multiparous Holstein cows were assigned to 6 blocks of 4 cows each according to their previous milk production. Within each block, 2 cows were fed a diet estimated to supply methionine as 1.83% metabolizable protein, equivalent to 76% of methionine requirement, whereas the 2 other cows were fed the same diet supplemented daily with 18 g of rumen-protected methionine. Within each diet, the cows were administrated either no vitamin supplement or weekly intramuscular injections of 160 mg of folic acid plus 10 mg of vitamin B(12.) To investigate metabolic changes at 12 wk of lactation, glucose and methionine kinetics were measured by isotope dilution using infusions of 3[U-(13)C]glucose, [(13)C]NaHCO(3) and 3[1-(13)C,(2)H(3)] methionine. Milk and plasma concentrations of folic acid and vitamin B(12) increased with vitamin injections. Supplementary B-vitamins increased milk production from 34.7 to 38.9 +/- 1.0 kg/d and increased milk lactose, protein, and total solids yields. Whole-body glucose flux tended to increase with vitamin supplementation with a similar quantitative magnitude as the milk lactose yield increase. Vitamin supplementation increased methionine utilization for protein synthesis through increased protein turnover when methionine was deficient and through decreased methionine oxidation when rumen-protected methionine was fed. Vitamin supplementation decreased plasma concentrations of homocysteine independently of rumen-protected methionine feeding, although no effect of vitamin supplementation was measured on methionine remethylation, but this could be due to the limitation of the technique used. Therefore, the effects of these B-vitamins on lactation performance were not mainly explained by methionine economy because of a more efficient methylneogenesis but were rather related to increased glucose availability and changes in methionine metabolism.

Abstract
The present experiment was undertaken to determine the effects of dietary supplements of folic acid and vitamin B12 given from 3 wk before to 8 wk after calving on lactational performance and metabolism of 24 multiparous Holstein cows assigned to 6 blocks of 4 cows each according to their previous milk production. Supplementary folic acid at 0 or 2.6 g/d and vitamin B12 at 0 or 0.5 g/d were used in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Supplementary folic acid increased milk production from 38.0 +/- 0.9 to 41.4 +/- 1.0 kg/d and milk crude protein yield from 1.17 +/- 0.02 to 1.25 +/- 0.03 kg/d. It also increased plasma Gly, Ser, Thr, and total sulfur AA, decreased Asp, and tended to increase plasma Met. Supplementary B12 decreased milk urea N, plasma Ile, and Leu and tended to decrease Val but increased homocysteine, Cys, and total sulfur AA. Liver concentration of phospholipids was higher in cows fed supplementary B12. Plasma and liver concentrations of folates and B12 were increased by their respective supplements, but the increase in plasma folates and plasma and liver B12 was smaller for cows fed the 2 vitamins together. In cows fed folic acid supplements, supplementary B12 increased plasma glucose and alanine, tended to decrease plasma biotin, and decreased Km of the methylmalonyl-coenzyme A mutase in hepatic tissues following addition of deoxyadenosylcobalamin, whereas it had no effect when cows were not fed folic acid supplements. There was no treatment effect on plasma nonesterified fatty acids as well as specific activity and gene expression of Met synthase and methylmalonyl-coenzyme A mutase in the liver. Ingestion of folic acid supplements by cows fed no supplementary B12 increased total lipid and triacylglycerols in liver, whereas these supplements had no effect in cows supplemented with B12. The increases in milk and milk protein yields due to folic acid supplements did not seem to be dependent on the vitamin B12 supply. However, when vitamin B12 was given in combination with folic acid, utilization of the 2 vitamins seems to be increased, probably more so in extrahepatic tissues. Metabolic efficiency seems also to be improved as suggested by similar lactational performance and dry matter intake for cows fed supplementary folic acid but increased plasma glucose and decreased hepatic lipids in cows fed folic acid and vitamin B12 together.

Abstract
An animal's capacity to recolonize a patch depends on at least two components: its ability to detect the patch and its ability to reach it. However, the disruption of such processes by anthropic disturbances could explain low animal abundance patterns observed by many investigators in certain landscapes. Through field experiments, we compared the orientation and homing success of northern green frogs (Rana clamitans melanota Rafinesque, 1820) and northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens Schreber, 1782) translocated across disturbed or undisturbed surfaces. We also monitored the path selected by individuals when presented with a choice between a short distance over a disturbed surface and a longer, undisturbed route. Finally, we measured the water loss and behaviour of frogs on substrates resulting from anthropogenic disturbances and a control. When presented with a choice, 72% of the frogs avoided disturbed surfaces. Although able to orient towards the pond of capture when translocated on disturbed surfaces, frogs had a lower probability of homing successfully to the pond than when translocated at a similar distance on an undisturbed surface. Frogs lost the most water on substrates associated with disturbance and in the absence of cover. Our data illustrate that anthropically disturbed areas devoid of cover, such as mined peatlands and agricultural fields, disrupt the ability of frogs to reach habitat patches and are likely explanations to their reduced abundance patterns in such environments.

Abstract
In study 1, four cows had a ruminal canula, a catheter in the right ruminal vein and an ultrasonic flow probe around the right ruminal artery; a catheter was placed in the auricular artery on experimental days. Blood samples were taken every 10 min from -20 to 60 min after ruminal infusion of 5.79 mmol pteroylmonoglutamic acid and cyanocobalamin. There was a net release of these vitamins across the rumen wall following the infusion (P=0.06). In studies 2 and 3, four cows had catheters in the portal, one hepatic and two mesenteric veins and one mesenteric artery. Plasma flow was determined using p-aminohippurate. In study 2, blood samples were taken before and every 30 min for 6 h after feeding 0 or 4 mg of pteroylmonoglutamic acid. Flow of folates through the portal-drained viscera (PDV) and the total splanchnic tissues (TSP) tended to increase with the ingestion of pteroylmonoglutamic acid (P=0.19). In study 3, blood samples were collected every 30 min for the first 3 h to calculate plasma flow and basal net fluxes of folates and vitamin B12. The cows were fed 2.6 g pteroylmonoglutamic acid and 500 mg cyanocobalamin; blood samples were taken every 2 h for 24 h. Vitamin supplements increased the net release of folates and vitamin B12 from PDV (P=0.04) and TSP (P=0.13). The present results demonstrate that, in dairy cows, at doses reported to improve animal performance, passage of pteroylmonoglutamic acid to the portal blood appears during the 6 h following its ingestion, whereas for cyanocobalamin, it is a slow process, not yet completed 24 h after its ingestion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify what training in medical ethics physician teachers need. DESIGN Qualitative research study using a modified nominal group technique. SETTING Family practice units affiliated with the Department of Family Medicine at Laval University in Quebec. PARTICIPANTS Fifty-three physician teachers in six family practice units. METHOD During seven meetings, the teachers shared information on clinical situations that had posed ethical problems. Data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's method. MAIN OUTCOME FINDINGS The 277 clinical situations were classified under nine themes: ethics; confidentiality; consent, refusal of treatment, and the right to information; level of care and abstention from and cessation of treatment; relationships with pharmaceutical companies and the ethics of research; ethics of teaching; allocation of resources; influence of third parties; and euthanasia and assisted suicide. Learning objectives were developed. CONCLUSION This research forms the basis of the ethics curriculum in the family medicine residency program at Laval University. It also offers a strategy for integrating ethics into daily teaching activities because the learning objectives derive directly from the concerns of the teaching faculty.

Multifocal subacute necrotizing encephalomyelopathy affects Simmental and Simmental-cross cattle. First clinical signs are ataxia and hind limb paresis. The characteristic gross lesion is bilaterally symmetrical, grey, depressed to cavitated foci involving nuclei in the brainstem. The caudal olivary nucleus is consistently involved. The etiology of the syndrome remains unknown.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate 4 preoperative skin preparations, that is, more specifically, to compare the efficacy of chlorhexidine gluconate (CG) and povidone-iodine (PI), as well as 2 hair removal techniques (clipper alone or clipper followed by razor) for preoperative skin preparation in cattle. The 4 protocols resulted in a significant decrease in the number of bacterial colony-forming units (cfu). Group 4 (clipping + shaving + CG) had a significantly lower number of preoperative cfu per gel plate compared with groups 1 (clipping + PI) and 3 (clipping + shaving + PI). Skin reaction frequency was significantly higher in groups 3 and 4 (47.8% for both protocols) than in groups 1 and 2 (clipping + PI or CG) (8.7% for both). Wound infection frequency was 4.3% (4/92) and no significant difference was observed between the 4 treatment groups. The 4 protocols tested were equivalent as to efficacy and satisfactorily decreased skin microflora. Clipping alone was shown to be preferable to clipping plus shaving as a method of hair removal in cattle, with fewer skin reactions and no more wound infections.

Abstract
Norms of rated subjective frequency of use and imagery on seven-point scales are reported for 1,916 French nouns. Subjective frequency was defined as the rated frequency of occurrence of words in spoken French, and imagery was defined as the rated case with which a word aroused a mental image. The mean, standard deviation, and percentile rank of the frequency and imagery ratings for each item are presented in the Appendix together with their objective frequency of occurrence in Baudot's (1992) dictionary. Interjudge reliability was assessed by calculating the correlation between the mean ratings of items repeated in the booklet, between the mean ratings obtained from odd-numbered and even-numbered respondents, and by computing the Cronbach alpha statistic for each page of the booklet. These reliability estimates were equal to or greater than .92 for frequency and for imagery, confirming the high level of interjudge consistency. Although the estimates provided by female and male participants were highly correlated (r = .97), the former gave a slightly higher frequency rating to the word sample but a slightly lower imagery rating than the latter did. Moreover, female respondents gave slightly more extreme ratings on the frequency and imagery scales. An analysis of the absolute difference between female and male ratings revealed a discrepancy of one half point or more on 20% of the word sample for frequency and 13% for imagery. On both scales, the mean absolute difference between male and female ratings was larger than that obtained by chance alone. This finding highlights the possibility that some words may not be equally familiar to women and men or may not evoke imagery with the same ease in these groups. Validity estimates for the frequency and imagery ratings were derived from correlations with scale values drawn from other normative studies. These correlation coefficients were equal to or greater than .78 for frequency and .86 for imagery, confirming the high level of consistency between this and other studies. An analysis of the relationship between subjective frequency and imagery ratings indicated that these variables are generally uncorrelated but exceptions occur. In the present study the coefficient of the correlation between subjective frequency and imagery was .24. However, when items with extreme mean frequency were excluded from the calculation, the correlation coefficient dropped to .04 and was no longer significant. Imagery ratings from five independent studies were all positively and significantly correlated with Vikis-Freibergs's (1974) frequency estimates, which were obtained from a free-association task. This finding suggests that word association, as a form of cued recall, may be influenced by several stimulus attributes including prior frequency of association and imagery-evoking value. The pattern of correlation between imagery ratings and text-based frequency estimates is not coherent. It reveals significant correlations only in select cases and no consistent polarity of linear relationship. The main contribution of this research is to provide reliable estimates of subjective frequency and imagery value for a word sample that is larger than those included in previous studies. A close examination of the linear relationship among the various sources of frequency and imagery data underscores the risk of confounding these variables in the selection of lexical stimuli for research.

Reaction time to the labels masculin/féminin was about 200 ms longer than to the un/une labels. When the indefinite articles were used, a single P3 peak of the event-related potential was elicited. When superordinate labels were used, a double-peaked positivity was observed. The latency of the initial P3 in the masculin/féminin trials was not significantly different from that in the un/une trials. The second positive wave peaked approximately 300 ms following the first. An explanation consistent with these data is that subjects used a two-stage process to classify the nouns appearing with superordinate labels.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to determine the etiology and types of vagal indigestion (VI) occurring after right displacement of the abomasum or abomasal volvulus (RDA/AV), and the prognosis for each type. Data of cows presented for RDA/AV from a retrospective (n = 288) and a prospective (n = 132) study were used. Vagal indigestion occurred in 39 and 22 cows in each study, respectively. A necropsy was performed in 29 cases. Gastric compartment dilation compatible with VI type III or IV occurred in 23 cases. An abnormal gastric wall was detected in 22 cases. Peritonitis was present in 18 cows. Vagal nerve lesions were present in 5 out of 13 cases studied. Clinical, hematological, and necropsy results suggested a classification of VI with respect to presence or absence of peritonitis. Gastric wall damage, peritonitis and vagal nerve lesions appear important in the etiology. Considering peritonitis occurrence, antimicrobial therapy appears necessary in the treatment of RDA/AV.

Abstract
An 8-month-old Ayrshire heifer had a rapidly growing mass in the axillary region of the left thoracic limb. The mass surrounded the distal humerus and entrapped nerves of the brachial plexus, causing an abnormal gait. Histologically, the mass was composed of clusters and cords of round to polygonal cells with scattered, spindle-shaped cells. The neoplastic cells stained positively for vimentin and cytokeratin. No staining was found with S-100 protein, kappa and lambda light chains, or T-cell markers by immunohistochemistry. On electron microscopic evaluation, the cytoplasm of the neoplastic cells contained few organelles, principally rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. This synovial sarcoma has histologic and ultrastructural features characteristic of the poorly differentiated subtype of synovial sarcoma in the human classification system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare synovial fluid characteristics of cattle with infectious and noninfectious arthritis. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. ANIMAL OR SAMPLE POPULATION 130 cattle. METHODS Synovial fluid was analyzed for total nucleated cell count (NCC), absolute number and percentages of polymorphonuclear (PMN) and mononuclear cells, total protein (TP) concentration, and specific gravity. Cattle were categorized as having infectious or noninfectious arthritis based on physical and lameness examinations, joint radiographs, and microbial culture results. Kruskal-Wallis 1-way analysis of variance was used to compare synovial fluid analysis data from different categories. Selection of cut-off values for the calculation of likelihood ratios, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values was based on examination of the distribution of the data using histograms. RESULTS Cattle with infectious arthritis had significantly higher numbers of total NNC, PMN cells, TP concentration, and specific gravity (P = .0001) and a significantly higher percentage of PMN cells compared with cattle with noninfectious arthritis (P = .0001). The percentage of mononuclear cells was significantly higher in cattle with noninfectious arthritis (P = .0001). CONCLUSIONS Synovial fluid analysis is useful for differentiation of infectious and noninfectious causes of joint disease in cattle. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Cattle with a synovial fluid total NCC > 25,000 cells/microL, a PMN cell count > 20,000 cells/microL or more than 80% PMN cells, and TP > 4.5 g/dL should be considered to have infectious arthritis.

Abstract
Changes in memory performance were examined after intake of a glucose (50 g) or saccharin (50 mg) solution in fasted men and women. Glucoregulation was estimated by using a recovery index to categorize participants within each gender as having poor or good recovery. Memory was assessed with word-learning tasks in which the imagery-evoking value of the words was systematically manipulated to yield high- and low-imagery lists. The results showed that men and women characterized as having poor glucose regulation had significantly worse memory performance under the saccharin condition. This decrement was reversed by glucose ingestion. These effects were observed for both low- and high-imagery words. This study supports the hypothesis that poor glucoregulation is associated with poor memory performance even in young healthy participants and that the ingestion of glucose can improve their memory.

Abstract
Previous research has shown that glucose can enhance memory in animals and humans. In humans, the facilitative effect of glucose is best observed with declarative memory tasks in older subjects. While the memory-enhancing action of glucose is well established, the underlying physiological mechanisms and the specific aspects of memory that are modulated by glucose in humans are not well understood. The present study sought to examine the effects of glucose on memory in young women using a memory paradigm sensitive to specific encoding and retrieval strategies. The glucose dose was adjusted for the weight of each participant in order to generate a dose response curve covering most doses used in previous studies. The results showed that 300 mg/kg glucose enhanced the primacy effect as defined by the recall of the first five items of the lists. However, none of the doses of glucose produced changes in the recall priority given to primacy items. The effect of glucose appears to be localized on the recall primacy effect, suggesting that glucose acts on precise memory operations. This improvement, however, is independent of the order in which subjects recalled the words. Cholinergic drugs have been shown to alter the recall of the primacy part of word lists and this observation is consistent with the hypothesis that glucose acts on memory through an interaction with brain cholinergic systems.

Abstract
Self-incompatibility (SI) is an effective method for limiting self-fertilization in flowering plant species, but there are circumstances in which an otherwise functional SI system may fail. One of the most intriguing of these is the induction of selfing by mixed loads of self and heterospecific pollen (the mentor effect) because it is likely to occur under natural conditions, such as in hybrid zones. Here we conducted a series of controlled crosses to determine whether mentor effects operate in two SI annual species, Helianthus annuus and H. petiolaris, and whether the failure of SI results in a decrease in the frequency of hybridization between these two species. Of the 1396 achenes examined from pollen mixtures that included varying ratios of self, intraspecific compatible, and interspecific pollen, 71 (5.1%) were selfed. Selfing frequencies were significantly less than expected based on pollen ratios, except when the proportion of intraspecific compatible pollen was low. Hybridization frequencies from these same pollen ratios averaged 41.8% with H. annuus as the maternal species and 13.3% with H. petiolaris as the mother. Analysis of 1404 achenes from pollen mixtures that excluded self pollen resulted in hybridization frequencies for H. annuus (42.2%) and H. petiolaris (18.2%) that do not differ significantly from those including self pollen. Thus, mentor effects do not appear to play an important role in reproductive isolation between these species. On the other hand, even a modest increase in self-fertilization in hybrid populations, such as that due to mentor effects, could enhance the probability of hybrid species establishment.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the frequency and sites of communication between the lateral and medial synovial sacs of the metatarsophalangeal or metacarpophalangeal joints in cattle. ANIMALS 188 limbs were obtained from 55 fresh bovine cadavers submitted for necropsy because of problems unrelated to the fetlocks. PROCEDURE In each ox, lateral or medial synovial sacs of each fetlock were randomly assigned. Joints were injected with a mixture of latex and barium sulfate. Communication between 2 joints was determined by presence of latex and contrast material in a joint adjacent to the injected joint by examining frozen sections and use of positive-contrast arthrography. RESULTS Communication between the 2 synovial sacs existed in 186 of 188 (98.9%) specimens. The communication site between lateral and medial synovial sacs was located at the level of the proximal sesamoid bones, between the distal aspect of the interdigital band of the axial branch of the interosseus muscle and the metacarpal or metatarsal bone. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Although communication between the lateral and medial synovial sacs did not exist in 2 specimens, the fetlock in cattle can be treated as 1 compartment.

PROCEDURE 1 of the 3 injection sites was randomly assigned to both carpi of each ox, and a mixture of latex and barium sulfate was injected into the joint. Communication between 2 or more joints was determined by the presence of latex and contrast material in a joint adjacent to the injected joint by examination of frozen sections, positive-contrast arthrography, and fluoroscopy. RESULTS Communication existed among the 3 joints in 18 specimens (13.1%). The middle carpal joint and the carpometacarpal joint always communicated. The antebrachiocarpal joint communicated with the middle carpal joint between the ulnar and intermediate carpal bones. The middle carpal and carpometacarpal joints always communicated between the fourth and fused second and third carpal bones. In a few specimens, additional sites of communication were identified at the palmar aspect of the fourth carpal bone and the fused second and third carpal bones. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Individual anatomic variation of the carpus in cattle should be considered when diagnostic or treatment protocols are established.

Abstract
A 32-month-old Angus bull was evaluated because of a 2-month history of a slowly progressive swelling located cranial to the base of the scrotum. The mass was 8 x 8 x 6 cm, and was causing phimosis. The mass was determined to be a penile hematoma on the basis of results of ultrasonography and exploratory surgery. Surgical evacuation was not performed initially because the deep fascia of the penis was intact and the hematoma was small; however, the hematoma enlarged slowly during the ensuring 2 months, despite sexual rest and isolation from other livestock. Doppler ultrasonography and positive-contrast corpus cavernosography were performed, and the hematoma was seen as a space-occupying mass within the corpus cavernosum penis; vascular anomalies were not found. The penile hematoma was surgically excised, and the bull was isolated for 60 days. At follow-up, the owner indicated that the bull had returned to pasture-breeding soundness and was still being used 2 years after surgery. The small penile hematoma in this bull was unusual in that it did not respond to medical treatment. Surgical treatment was apparently curative, even though surgery was not performed until 4 months after the hematoma was first detected.

Abstract
One hundred seventeen cattle that had undergone surgery were assigned randomly to two preoperative skin preparation protocols. Group 1 (60 animals) skin preparation was with povidoneiodine soap and isopropyl alcohol, whereas group 2 (57 animals) had skin preparation with chlorhexidine gluconate and isopropyl alcohol. Quantitative microbial culture plates were used to estimate the number of colony forming units (CFUs) before skin preparation (prescrub), after skin preparation (postscrub), after surgery (postoperative), and in room air (environment). A significant decrease in CFU occurred postscrub for both skin preparations (P < .05). Chlorhexidine and alcohol preparation resulted in significantly fewer CFUs (LSMean +/- SE = 2.79 CFU +/- 1.74) and a greater percentage reduction in CFUs (98.64% +/- 2.01) postscrub than providone and alcohol (LSMean +/- SE = 10.27 CFUs +/- 1.51, 93.29% +/- 1.85); (P < .005). Group 2 had a significantly higher frequency of negative cultures postscrub (49.1%) compared with group 1 (18.3%) (P < .001). The number of postoperative CFUs were not significantly different between the two treatment groups. Wound infection frequency for clean surgical procedures was not significantly different between the two skin preparation protocols (group 1 = 9.8%, group 2 = 10.7%), however, infection frequency was significantly higher for surgical procedures with a ventral abdominal approach (5 of 14, 35.7%,) compared with a flank approach (1 of 41, 2.4%) or other approaches (orthopedic procedures) (1 of 16, 6.3%) (P < .05). Both skin preparation protocols were effective and safe in decreasing the skin microflora population of cattle before surgery and although preparation with chlorhexidine gluconate and alcohol resulted in less CFUs immediately postscrub, the frequency of surgical wound infection was similar for both protocols.

Abstract
Information for all cattle with a diagnosis of tendon injury entered into the Veterinary Medical Data Base (VMDB) was retrieved and selected medical records reviewed. The proportional morbidity rate for tendon disruption was 0.89 cattle/1,000 cattle admissions and 95 of 99 cattle survived. Female and dairy cattle had a greater risk of tendon disruption than male or beef cattle, respectively. Also, cattle 6 months to 7 years old had a greater risk than cattle younger than 6 months old. Complete medical records were examined for 27 cattle. Affected cattle were 2.5 +/- 1.8 years old and weighed 593.6 +/- 315.6 kg. Injuries were most commonly caused by accidents involving farm machinery (72%). Unilateral superficial digital flexor tendon injury occurred in 8 cattle (30%); multiple tendon injury occurred in the other 19 cattle (70%). A single limb was involved in 25 cattle, a rear limb was involved in 24 cattle, and an open wound was associated with the injury in 26 cattle. Wounds were identified most commonly at the mid (13 cattle) and proximal metatarsus (4 cattle). Treatment of tendon disruption included tenorrhaphy and casting (9 cattle), external coaptation, alone, (14 cattle), stall confinement, alone, (1 cow), and euthanasia or salvage (3 cattle). External coaptation was maintained for 74.4 +/- 34.3 days, and total confinement period was 88.3 +/- 59.5 days. Short-term complications included severe tendon laxity (one cow) and fatal septic peritonitis (one bull). Twenty-two of 24 cattle treated for tendon disruption survived. Follow-up information was available for 16 cattle; 14 cattle (87%) returned to productivity and 11 of 15 cattle with long-term follow-up (73%) were considered productive. Long-term complications included persistent lameness (56%) and persistent hyperextension of the digits (19%).

PROCEDURE The joints were injected with a mixture of latex and barium sulfate. Communication between 2 or more joints was determined by the presence of latex and contrast material in a joint adjacent to the injected joint by examining frozen sections and positive-contrast arthrography. RESULTS Communication between the 3 joints was present in 58 (56.9%) limbs. The femoropatellar and the medial femorotibial joints always communicated. Thirteen of 38 (34.2%) specimens injected in the lateral femorotibial joint did not communicate with the 2 other joints. The femoropatellar joint communicated with the lateral and medial femorotibial joints on the distal abaxial aspect of the trochlear ridge. CONCLUSION Individual anatomic variation of the stifle in cattle should be considered when diagnostic or treatment protocols are established. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The lateral femorotibial joint should be treated separately because it does not consistently communicate with the femoropatellar or medial femorotibial joint.

Abstract
Digital diseases in cattle are common. Cattle affected by digital disorders do not always respond to medical therapy and often need surgery. A thorough examination of the digits and radiographic evaluation help the clinician to choose the appropriate treatment and surgical approach. Age, sex, weight, type of production, and environment of the cattle also should be considered in choice of therapy.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare success rates for preputial surgery depending on the initial diagnosis, ability to extend the penis, use of sedation and local anesthesia versus general anesthesia for surgery, and surgical technique. Medical records of 51 bulls treated surgically for preputial injury were reviewed. The mean age of the bulls was 2.5 years ranging from 1 to 5 years. Bos taurus breeds (82.3%) were more often affected than Bos indicus breeds (17.7%). The most common breeds represented in this study were Angus (45.1%), Simmental (11.8%), and brangus (9.8%). The seasonal incidence of preputial injuries was higher during the period of May-July (52.9%) and November-February (33.3%). The overall success rate was 70%. Posthioplasty was more successful than circumcision (90% to 43%) (P < 0.05). The success rate for surgeries performed under inhalation anesthesia in the surgery suite was 100% compared with a success rate of 63% for those animals operated on with injectable and local anesthesia in a rotary chute (P < 0.05). The success rate was 88% if the penis could be extended before the surgery and 36% if extension was not achieved (P < 0.05).

Abstract
Reference values for hematologic variables change with increasing age in cattle. Therefore, the purpose of the study reported here was to describe the peritoneal fluid constituents of clinically normal young calves, and to compare cellular concentration and distribution in blood and peritoneal fluid of young calves with those of adult cattle. Eight healthy 8-week-old male Holstein calves and 8 healthy 3- to 8-year-old Holstein cows were studied. Peritoneal fluid was collected from calves along the ventral midline, 4-cm cranial to the umbilicus. Abdominocentesis was performed in the region of the lower right flank in adult cattle. Correlation analysis, using the Pearson's correlation coefficient, and regression analysis were performed for blood and peritoneal fluid data from calves. Data from calves were compared with those of cows, using Wilcoxon's rank sum test. A P value < 0.05 was considered significant for all tests. Calves had significantly lower blood eosinophil count (P < 0.003) and plasma protein concentration (P < 0.001) than did cows. Calves had significantly higher peritoneal fluid nucleated cell (P < 0.05) and mononuclear cell (P < 0.05) counts, but lower peritoneal fluid eosinophil cell count (P < 0.003) than did cows. For calves, nucleated cell and lymphocyte cell counts in the blood had a high, positive correlation with those of peritoneal fluid. However, the prediction equation for nucleated cell count accounted for a modest proportion of variability. A prediction equation for peritoneal fluid lymphocyte cell count was established.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Medical records were reviewed for 12 cattle with septic arthritis of the distal interphalangeal joint that were treated by use of facilitated ankylosis. Information on signalment, clinical signs, digit affected, radiographic findings, and type and duration of treatment were compiled. Owners were contacted for information about the convalescent period, reasons for culling, productivity, and outcome. Outcome was classified as successful or unsuccessful on the basis of lameness, growth pattern, and whether the cattle were subsequently productive. Cause of the septic arthritis was unknown in 9 of 12 (75%) cattle. Eleven of 12 (92%) cattle represented beef breeds. Cattle were lame for a mean of 5.3 weeks before admission. In 8 of 12 (67%) cattle, a trephine was used in the creation of an arthrostomy, the middle and distal phalanges were curetted, and the joint was lavaged with isotonic solution. A drill bit was used in 4 of 12 (33%) cattle to remove articular cartilage and facilitate ankylosis. Convalescent period after discharge from the hospital was 1 to 7 months (mean, 4 months; median, 4 months). After that period, all cattle had an apparently normal gait. Eight of 12 (67%) cattle were maintained in their herd of origin. None of the cattle were culled because of lameness. Two of 12 (17%) cattle had a deformation of the affected digit. According to the criteria for successful outcome that were used in the study reported here, the success rate was 100%. Treatment of septic arthritis of the distal interphalangeal joint by use of facilitated ankylosis is an alternative to digit amputation and is recommended to promote longevity and productivity.

Abstract
The effect of right paralumbar fossa exploratory celiotomy and omentopexy on peritoneal fluid constituents was studied in 22 adult dairy cows. Six cows were eliminated on the basis of physical examination findings (n = 2), surgical findings (n = 2), or inability to obtain a sufficient volume of peritoneal fluid (n = 2). Sixteen cattle had normal results of CBC and serum biochemical analysis, and a minimum of 1 ml of peritoneal fluid was obtained by abdominocentesis. Abdominocentesis was repeated on days 1, 2, and 6 after surgery. Statistical analysis for repeated measures was performed, using a significance level of P < 0.05. Stage of gestation was evaluated for interaction with time. Mean total nucleated cell count was 3,200 cells/microliters before surgery, was significantly increased 2 days after surgery (16,336 cells/microliters), and continued to increase through day 6 (20,542 cells/microliters). Mean polymorphonuclear cell count was 1,312 cells/microliters before surgery and was significantly higher at 2 (11,043 cells/microliters) and 6 (10,619 cells/microliters) days after surgery. Mean lymphocyte count was 254 cells/microliters before surgery and was significantly increased 2 days (1,911 cells/microliters) after surgery. By day 6, lymphocyte numbers were similar to preoperative values. Mean mononuclear cell count was 770 cells/microliters before surgery and was significantly increased on days 1 (3,084 cells/microliters), 2 (3,285 cells/microliters), and 6 (2,349 cells/microliters) after surgery. Mean eosinophil numbers were 1,388 cells/microliters before surgery and were significantly increased on day 6 (6,347 cells/microliters) only. Interaction between time and stage of gestation was found only for specific gravity and total protein concentration.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
A 3-day-old Hereford calf was presented for general weakness and severe dyspnoea. Lateral radiographs projections showed several compartmentalized gas filled structures in the caudodorsal thorax. At necropsy each diaphragmatic lung lobe contained a large cyst. Gross and histopathologic findings were consistent with a congenital type I cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs.
