Abstract
Ca2+ influx through Cav3.3 T-type channel plays crucial roles in neuronal excitability and is subject to regulation by various signaling molecules. However, our understanding of the partners of Cav3.3 and the related regulatory pathways remains largely limited. To address this quest, we employed the rat Cav3.3 C-terminus as bait in yeast-two-hybrid screenings of a cDNA library, identifying rat Gβ2 as an interaction partner. Subsequent assays revealed that the interaction of Gβ2 subunit was specific to the Cav3.3 C-terminus. Through systematic dissection of the C-terminus, we pinpointed a 22 amino acid sequence (amino acids 1789-1810) as the Gβ2 interaction site. Coexpression studies of rat Cav3.3 with various Gβγ compositions were conducted in HEK-293 cells. Patch clamp recordings revealed that coexpression of Gβ2γ2 reduced Cav3.3 current density and accelerated inactivation kinetics. Interestingly, the effects were not unique to Gβ2γ2, but were mimicked by Gβ2 alone as well as other Gβγ dimers, with similar potencies. Deletion of the Gβ2 interaction site abolished the effects of Gβ2γ2. Importantly, these Gβ2 effects were reproduced in human Cav3.3. Overall, our findings provide evidence that Gβ(γ) complexes inhibit Cav3.3 channel activity and accelerate the inactivation kinetics through the Gβ interaction with the Cav3.3 C-terminus.

Abstract
In Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire, USA, Haplosporidium nelsoni and Perkinsus marinus are 2 active pathogens of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin), that cause MSX (multinucleated sphere with unknown affinity 'X') and dermo mortalities, respectively. Whereas studies have quantified infection intensities in oyster populations and determined whether these parasites exist in certain planktonic organisms, no studies thus far have examined both infectious agents simultaneously in water associated with areas that do and do not have oyster populations. As in other estuaries, both organisms are present in estuarine waters throughout the Bay, especially during June through November, when oysters are most active. Waters associated with oyster habitats had higher, more variable DNA concentrations from these pathogenic organisms than waters at a non-oyster site. This finding allows for enhanced understanding of disease-causing organisms in New England estuaries, where oyster restoration is a priority.

Abstract
Due to climate change, soil moisture may increase, and outflows could become more frequent, which will have a considerable impact on crop growth. Crops are affected by soil moisture; thus, soil moisture prediction is necessary for irrigating at an appropriate time according to weather changes. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop a future soil moisture (SM) prediction model to determine whether to conduct irrigation according to changes in soil moisture due to weather conditions. Sensors were used to measure soil moisture and soil temperature at a depth of 10 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm from the topsoil. The combination of optimal variables was investigated using soil moisture and soil temperature at depths between 10 cm and 30 cm and weather data as input variables. The recurrent neural network long short-term memory (RNN-LSTM) models for predicting SM was developed using time series data. The loss and the coefficient of determination (R2) values were used as indicators for evaluating the model performance and two verification datasets were used to test various conditions. The best model performance for 10 cm depth was an R2 of 0.999, a loss of 0.022, and a validation loss of 0.105, and the best results for 20 cm and 30 cm depths were an R2 of 0.999, a loss of 0.016, and a validation loss of 0.098 and an R2 of 0.956, a loss of 0.057, and a validation loss of 2.883, respectively. The RNN-LSTM model was used to confirm the SM predictability in soybean arable land and could be applied to supply the appropriate moisture needed for crop growth. The results of this study show that a soil moisture prediction model based on time-series weather data can help determine the appropriate amount of irrigation required for crop cultivation.

Abstract
Implementation of higher dose (HD) thromboprophylaxis has been considered in patients infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Our aim was to compare HD to standard dose (SD) thromboprophylaxis in COVID-19 patients. The protocol is registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021284808). We searched for randomised controlled studies (CENTRAL, Embase, Medline and medRxviv) that compared HD to SD anticoagulation in COVID-19 and analysed outcomes such as mortality, thrombotic events, bleedings, and disease progression. The statistical analyses were made using the random effects model. Fourteen articles were included (6253 patients). HD compared with SD showed no difference in mortality (OR 0.83 [95% CI 0.54−1.28]). The use of HD was associated with a decreased risk of thrombosis (OR 0.58 [95% CI 0.44−0.76]), although with an increased risk of major bleeding (OR 1.64 [95% CI 1.25−2.16]). The cohort with D-dimer < 1 mg/mL showed no effect (OR 1.19 [95% CI 0.67−2.11]), but in the case of D-dimer > 1 mg/mL, a tendency of lower risk in the HD group was observed (OR 0.56 [95% CI 0.31−1.00]). The need for intubation in moderately ill patients showed a nonsignificant lower likelihood in the HD group (OR 0.82 [95% CI 0.63−1.08]). We cannot advocate for HD in all COVID-19 patients, although it shows some nonsignificant benefits on disease progression in those with elevated D-dimer who do not need ICU admission.

Abstract
Metal/polymer bilayer composites feature high strength-to-weight ratios and low manufacturing costs despite the weak interfacial adhesion between their components. In this study, aluminum surfaces were modified to generate microporous architectures and hydroxyl moieties by various physical and chemical treatments, including thermal, plasma, anodizing, and hexafluorozirconic acid treatments to overcome the weak interfacial adhesion. The maximum shear strength of the obtained metal/polymer bilayer composites was achieved by anodizing treatment, whereas all treatment methods substantially improved the material toughness. In addition, modified compatibilizing agents with tailorable hydroxyl moieties were applied to enhance the interfacial adhesion using aminoethylaminopropyl trimethoxysilane (AEAPS) and modified AEAPS as a coupling agent. AEAPS modified by monoepoxide (glycidol) produced the strongest positive effect on the composite mechanical properties. These findings can be useful in a myriad of metal/polymer multilayer composites.

Abstract
DNA origami requires long scaffold DNA to be aligned with the guidance of short staple DNA strands. Scaffold DNA is produced in Escherichia coli as a form of the M13 bacteriophage by rolling circle amplification (RCA). This study shows that RCA can be reconfigured by reducing phage protein V (pV) expression, improving the production throughput of scaffold DNA by at least 5.66-fold. The change in pV expression was executed by modifying the untranslated region sequence and monitored using a reporter green fluorescence protein fused to pV. In a separate experiment, pV expression was controlled by an inducer. In both experiments, reduced pV expression was correlated with improved M13 bacteriophage production. High-cell-density cultivation was attempted for mass scaffold DNA production, and the produced scaffold DNA was successfully folded into a barrel shape without compromising structural quality. This result suggested that scaffold DNA production throughput can be significantly improved by reprogramming the RCA in E. coli.

Abstract
The selfing fish Kryptolebias hermaphroditus has unique reproductive system for self-fertilization, making genetically homozygous offsprings. Here, we report on high density genetic map-based genome assembly for the K. hermaphroditus Panama line (PanRS). The numbers of scaffolds were 5212 and the genome was 683,992,224 bp (N50 = 27.45 Mb). The length of anchored scaffold onto 24 linkage groups was 652,231,070 bp (95.3% of genome) with 0.01% of the gap and 39.33% of GC content and complete Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs value was 96.6%. The numbers of annotated genes were 36,756 (average gene length 1368 bp) with the GC content of 54.1%. To examine the difference between the two sister species in the genus Kryptolebias, we compared the genomes of K. hermaphroditus PanRS and Kryptolebias marmoratus PAN line on the composition of transposable elements. To demonstrate applications of genome library, phase I and II detoxification related gene families have been analyzed, and compared the syntenies containing loci of CYP and GST genes on linkage groups. This K. hermaphroditus genome information will be helpful for a better understanding on genome-wide mechanistic view of detoxification and antioxidant-related genes over evolution in the view of fish environmental ecotoxicology.

Abstract
The copepod Tigriopus japonicus has been widely used as an experimental species in the field of ecotoxicology. We have sequenced and assembled the whole genome of T. japonicus with comparative analysis of gene families that represent detoxification phases in two additional public genomes of Tigriopus spp., namely, T. californicus and T. kingsejongensis. The total length of the T. japonicus assembled genome was 196.6 Mb with an N50 value of 10.65 Mb and consisted of 339 scaffolds and 25,143 annotated genes. The detoxification gene families encoding cytochrome P450s (CYP450s), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) proteins in Tigriopus spp. have shown species-dependent diversity in several gene sets, suggesting that these genes have undergone a species-specific expansion to increase their fitness to different marine habitats and environmental pressures. Our study will provide a better understanding of the detoxification system in Tigriopus spp. and will contribute to various areas of research, including ecotoxicology.

Abstract
The Java medaka (Oryzias javanicus) is distributed in tropical brackish water and is considered as an ecotoxicological experimental organism for assessing diverse pollutions and global climate change effects in the ocean. In this study, we sequenced and assembled the genome of O. javanicus using the Oxford Nanopore technique and anchored the scaffolds to the 24 genetic linkage map of a sister species Oryzias melastigma. The assembled genome consisted of 773 scaffolds including 24 LG-based scaffolds, and the estimated genome length was 846.3 Mb (N50 = 19.3 Mb), containing 24,498 genes. As detoxification processes are crucial in aquatic organisms, antioxidant-related genes including glutathione S-transferases, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase were identified in this study. In the genome of O. javanicus, a total of 21 GSTs, 4 SODs, 1 CAT, and 7 GPxs were identified and showed high similarities between sister species O. melastigma and Oryzias latipes. In addition, despite having 8 classes of cytosolic GSTs family, medaka showed no presence of GST pi and sigma classes, which are predominantly found in carp and salmon, but not in neoteleostei. This study adds another set to genome-library of Oryzias spp. and is a useful resource for better understanding of the molecular ecotoxicology.

Abstract
Brachionus spp. (Rotifera: Monogononta) are globally distributed in aquatic environments and play important roles in the aquatic ecosystem. The marine monogonont rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is considered a suitable model organism for ecology, evolution, and ecotoxicology. In this study, we assembled and characterized the B. plicatilis genome. The total length of the assembled genome was 106.9 Mb and the number of final scaffolds was 716 with an N50 value of 1.15 Mb and a GC content of 26.75%. A total of 20,154 genes were annotated after manual curation. To demonstrate the use of whole genome data, we targeted one of the main detoxifying enzyme of phase I detoxification system and identified in a total of 28 cytochrome P450 s (CYPs). Based on the phylogenetic analysis using the maximum likelihood, 28 B. plicatilis-CYPs were apparently separated into five different clans, namely, 2, 3, 4, mitochondrial (MT), and 46 clans. To better understand the CYPs-mediated xenobiotic detoxification, we measured the mRNA expression levels of 28 B. plicatilis CYPs in response to chlorpyrifos and 2-ethyl-phenanthrene. Most B. plicatilis CYPs were significantly modulated (P < 0.05) in response to chlorpyrifos and 2-ethyl-phenanthrene. In addition, xenobiotic-sensing nuclear receptor (XNR) response element sequences were identified in the 5 kb upstream of promoter regions of 28 CYPs from the genome of B. plicatilis, indicating that these XNR can be associated with detoxification of xenobiotics. Overall, the assembled B. plicatilis genome presented here will be a useful resource for a better understanding the molecular ecotoxicology in the view of molecular mechanisms underlying toxicological responses, particularly on xenobiotic detoxification in this species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a heterogeneous condition that can differ in its clinical manifestation, structural changes and response to treatment. OBJECTIVE To identify subgroups of COPD with distinct phenotypes, evaluate the distribution of phenotypes in four related regions and calculate the 1-year change in lung function and quality of life according to subgroup. METHODS Using clinical characteristics, we performed factor analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis in a cohort of 1676 COPD patients from 13 Asian cities. We compared the 1-year change in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), modified Medical Research Council dyspnoea scale score, St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) score and exacerbations according to subgroup derived from cluster analysis. RESULTS Factor analysis revealed that body mass index, Charlson comorbidity index, SGRQ total score and FEV1 were principal factors. Using these four factors, cluster analysis identified three distinct subgroups with differing disease severity and symptoms. Among the three subgroups, patients in subgroup 2 (severe disease and more symptoms) had the most frequent exacerbations, most rapid FEV1 decline and greatest decline in SGRQ total score. CONCLUSION Three subgroups with differing severities and symptoms were identified in Asian COPD subjects.

Abstract
The water flea Daphnia magna is a small planktonic cladoceran. D. magna has been used as a model species for ecotoxicology, as it is sensitive to environmental stressors and environmental changes. Since Daphnia is affected by culture environment and each population/strain has its own ecological and genetic characteristics, its population/strain-based genome information is useful for environmental genomic studies. In this study, we assembled and characterized the genome of D. magna. Using a high-density genetic map of D. magna xinb3, the draft genome was integrated to 10 linkage groups (LGs). The total length of the integrated genome was about 123 Mb with N50 = 10.1 Mb, and the number of scaffolds was 4193 including 10 LGs. A total of 15,721 genes were annotated after manual curation. Orthologous genes were characterized in the genome and compared with other genomes of Daphnia. In addition, we identified defense related genes such as cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes, glutathione S-transferase (GST) genes, and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) genes from the assembled D. magna genome for its potential use in molecular ecotoxicological studies in the freshwater environment. This genomic resource will be helpful to study for a better understanding on molecular mechanism in response to various pollutants.

Abstract
Hypoxia is a pressing environmental problem in both marine and freshwater ecosystems globally, and this problem will be further exacerbated by global warming in the coming decades. Recently, we reported that hypoxia can cause transgenerational impairment of sperm quality and quantity in fish (in F0, F1, and F2 generations) through DNA methylome modifications. Here, we provide evidence that female fish ( Oryzias melastigma) exposed to hypoxia exhibit reproductive impairments (follicle atresia and retarded oocyte development), leading to a drastic reduction in hatching success in the F2 generation of the transgenerational group, although they have never been exposed to hypoxia. Further analyses show that the observed transgenerational impairments in ovarian functions are related to changes in the DNA methylation and expression pattern of two gene clusters that are closely associated with stress-induced cell cycle arrest and cell apoptosis. The observed epigenetic and transgenerational alterations suggest that hypoxia may pose a significant threat to the sustainability of natural fish populations.

Abstract
Previously, the production of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae was improved by deletion of the genes encoding phosphofructokinase 2 (PFK-2) isoforms, which reduced the glycolytic flux by eliminating the pathway to produce fructose-2,6-bisphosphate, an allosteric activator of phosphofructokinase 1 (PFK-1). We further examined the effects of an additional reduction in glucose metabolic rate on N-acetylglucosamine production. Glucose uptake rate was lowered by expressing a gene encoding truncated glucose-sensing regulator ( MTH1-Δ T). In addition, catalytically dead Cas9 (dCas9) was introduced in order to down-regulate the expression levels of PFK-1 and pyruvate kinase-1 (Pyk1). Finally, the three strategies were introduced into S. cerevisiae strains in a combinatorial way; the strain containing all three modules resulted in the highest N-acetylglucosamine production yield. The results showed that the three modules cooperatively reduced the glucose metabolism and improved N-acetylglucosamine production up to 3.0 g/L in shake flask cultivation.

Abstract
Autopsy is regarded as the gold standard in death investigation. Moreover, the statistical data from autopsies provides basic statistics for various aspects of society. However, the autopsy rate is low in the Republic of Korea. For a stable forensic autopsy, the Police Agency, the National Forensic Service, and the Department of Forensic Medicine, Chonnam National University concluded an agreement regarding forensic autopsies in the Honam area (Gwangju and Jeollanam-do areas) in 2007. This study aimed to review forensic autopsies performed over the past 10 years according to the trilateral agreement in the Gwangju and Jeollanam-do areas. A total of 3,899 cases were categorized based on the specific region; the manner and cause of death were investigated, and autopsy rates were calculated. The analysis of the manner of death revealed that 2,125 cases (54.5%) were unnatural deaths, 1,347 cases (34.5%) were natural deaths, and 427 cases (11.0%) were from an unknown cause of death. The number of autopsies was relatively stable until 2013 but increased from 2014. Since then, there was a fluctuation in the annual autopsy rates in each region. A negative correlation was noted between the distances from the region requesting autopsies to the institution performing autopsies and the autopsy rates. The authors believe that this study could be used as foundational data to guide the development of a postmortem investigation system and a reference for improving social security and public health.

Abstract
The calanoid copepod Eurytemora affinis is one of the most abundant estuarine species and is considered to be an ideal candidate species for ecotoxicological research. An RNA-Seq-based transcriptome was developed from whole bodies of this species. Among 142,442 contigs of the de novo assembly by Trinity, 48,480 open reading frame (ORF) contigs were found using TransDecoder. A total of 17,762 genes were identified by BLAST analysis, which covers about 75% of the annotated genes in the E. affinis genome. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis showed that most annotated sequences were related to metabolism pathways, including xenobiotic biodegradation. Using transcriptome data, we identified putative transcripts related to xenobiotic processing genes including phase I enzymes, phase II enzymes, transporters, and transcription factors. To understand the CYP-mediated detoxification metabolism of xenobiotics, we measured the transcriptional levels of 16 CYPs (within full sequences) of E. affinis in response to benzo[α]pyrene (B[α]P). Most Ea-CYP genes were significantly down- and/or up-regulated (P < 0.05) in response to B[α]P, suggesting that Ea-CYP genes are likely involved in detoxification (mainly in biotransformation of xenobiotics) with particular genes, demonstrating significant upregulation or downregulation compared to others, as shown in other copepod model species (e.g. Tigriopus japonicus and Paracyclopina nana). This study will provide insight into the potential role of E. affinis in response to various toxic or xenobiotic chemicals in the marine environment.

Abstract
Marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) is considered to be a useful fish model for marine and estuarine ecotoxicology studies and has good potential for field-based population genomics because of its geographical distribution in Asian estuarine and coastal areas. In this study, we present the first whole-genome draft of O. melastigma. The genome assembly consists of 8,602 scaffolds (N50 = 23.737 Mb) and a total genome length of 779.4 Mb. A total of 23,528 genes were predicted, and 12,670 gene families shared with three teleost species (Japanese medaka, mangrove killifish and zebrafish) were identified. Genome analyses revealed that the O. melastigma genome is highly heterozygous and contains a large number of repeat sequences. This assembly represents a useful genomic resource for fish scientists.

Abstract
Monogononta is the most speciose class of rotifers, with more than 2,000 species. The monogonont genus Brachionus is widely distributed at a global scale, and a few of its species are commonly used as ecological and evolutionary models to address questions related to aquatic ecology, cryptic speciation, evolutionary ecology, the evolution of sex and ecotoxicology. With the importance of Brachionus species in many areas of research, it is remarkable that the genome has not been characterized. This study aims to address this lacuna by presenting, for the first time, the whole-genome assembly of the freshwater species Brachionus calyciflorus. The total length of the assembled genome was 129.6 Mb, with 1,041 scaffolds. The N50 value was 786.6 kb, and the GC content was 24%. A total of 16,114 genes were annotated with repeat sequences, accounting for 21% of the assembled genome. This assembled genome may form a basis for future studies addressing key questions on the evolution of monogonont rotifers. It will also provide the necessary molecular resources to mechanistically investigate ecophysiological and ecotoxicological responses.

Abstract
Trypanosoma brucei uses variant surface glycoproteins (VSGs) to evade the host immune system and ensure parasitic longevity in animals and humans. VSGs are attached to the cell membrane by complex glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchors (GPI). Distinguishing structural feature of VSG GPIs are multiple α- and β-galactosides attached to the conserved GPI core structure. T. brucei GPIs have been associated with macrophage activation and alleviation of parasitemia during infection, acting as disease onset delaying antigens. Literature reports that link structural modifications in the GPIs to changes in biological activity are contradictory. We have established a synthetic route to prepare structurally overlapping GPI derivatives bearing different T. brucei characteristic structural modifications. The GPI collection will be used to assess the effect of galactosylation and phosphorylation on T. brucei GPI immunomodulatory activity, and to perform an epitope mapping of this complex glycolipid as potential diagnostic marker for Trypanosomiasis. A strategy for the synthesis of a complete α-tetragalactoside using the 2-naphthylmethyl protecting group and for subsequent attachment of GPI fragments to peptides is presented.

Abstract
We report the complete sequence analysis of the entire complement of eight typical homeobox (Hox) genes (Lab, Pb, Dfd, Scr, Antp, Ubx, Abd-A, and Abd-B) and two other genes (Hox3 and Ftz) in a 324.6-kb region in the water flea Daphnia magna. In the cluster of D. magna Hox genes, we found one long interspersed nuclear element (LINE)/R2-NeSL between Ubx and Abd-A that was not present in Daphnia pulex Hox genes. In basal expression of Hox genes at different developmental stages, biothorax complex genes (Ubx, Abd-A, and Abd-B) and some antennapedia complex genes (Lab, Scr, Antp) were moderately expressed, but the Hox3 gene was barely expressed. Three homeobox genes (Antp, Ubx, Abd-A) were highly expressed at 6-7 days after release from the brood chamber and/or in the adult stage. The structural array and transcribed orientation of Dm-Hox genes were identical to those of the sister species D. pulex (∼340 kb), indicating that the Hox gene structure in daphnids is highly conserved. However, Dm- and Dp-Hox3, -deformed (Dfd), and -fushi tarazu (Ftz) genes varied from orthologous genes in pancrustacean species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The mangrove killifish Kryptolebias marmoratus is the only vertebrate that reproduces by self-fertilizing and is an important model species in genetics and marine ecotoxicology. Using whole-genome and transcriptome sequences, we identified all members of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) family in this model teleost and compared them with those of other teleosts. RESULTS A total of 74 cytochrome P450 genes and one pseudogene were identified in K. marmoratus. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the CYP genes in clan 2 were most expanded, while synteny analysis with other species showed orthologous relationships of CYP subfamilies among teleosts. In addition to the CYP2K expansions, five tandem duplicated gene copies of CYP5A were observed. These features were unique to K. marmoratus. CONCLUSIONS These results shed a light on CYP gene evolution, particularly the co-localized CYP2K, CYP5A, and CYP46A subfamilies in fish. Future studies of CYP expression could identify specific endogenous and exogenous environmental factors that triggered the evolution of tandem CYP duplication in K. marmoratus.

Abstract
Mitigating for the negative impacts of stormwater runoff is becoming a concern due to increased land development. Understanding how land development influences stormwater runoff is essential for sustainably managing water resources. In recent years, aggregate low impact development-best management practices (LID-BMPs) have been implemented to reduce the negative impacts of stormwater runoff on receiving water bodies. This study used an integrated approach to determine the influence of land development and assess the ecological benefits of four aggregate LID-BMPs in stormwater runoff from a mixed land use and land cover (LULC) catchment with ongoing land development. It used data from 2011 to 2015 that monitored 41 storm events and monthly LULC, and a Personalized Computer Storm Water Management Model (PCSWMM). The four aggregate LID-BMPs are: ecological (S1), utilizing pervious covers (S2), and multi-control (S3) and (S4). These LID-BMPs were designed and distributed in the study area based on catchment characteristics, cost, and effectiveness. PCSWMM was used to simulate the monitored storm events from 2014 (calibration: R2 and NSE>0.5; RMSE <11) and 2015 (validation: R2 and NSE>0.5; RMSE <12). For continuous simulation and analyzing LID-BMPs scenarios, the five-year (2011 to 2015) stormwater runoff data and LULC change patterns (only 2015 for LID-BMPs) were used. Results show that the expansion of bare land and impervious cover, soil alteration, and high amount of precipitation influenced the stormwater runoff variability during different phases of land development. The four aggregate LID-BMPs reduced runoff volume (34%-61%), peak flow (6%-19%), and pollutant concentrations (53%-83%). The results of this study, in addition to supporting local LULC planning and land development activities, also could be applied to input data for empirical modeling, and designing sustainable stormwater management guidelines and monitoring strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research on the types of interventions needed for population-level prevention of childhood obesity in complex societal systems can benefit from greater use of systems-science concepts and tools. OBJECTIVES We report outcomes of a funding programme promoting incorporation of systems-science approaches into studies of imminent policy or environmental changes potentially impacting childhood obesity. METHODS Seven funding cycles over 3 years yielded 172 initial submissions from 29 US states and 25 other countries were analyzed. RESULTS Submissions focused primarily on aspects of school or child-care settings, parks and recreational settings, or access to healthy food; about half reflected attention to systems perspectives. CONCLUSIONS Analysis of initial submissions as well as the 15 funded projects showed some success in motivating use of systems concepts and tools but suggested the need for a more focused effort to educate and prepare the childhood obesity prevention research community for this potentially crucial type of research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) an urgent public health threat; however, its economic burden is unknown. METHODS We developed a CRE clinical and economics outcomes model to determine the cost of CRE infection from the hospital, third-party payer, and societal, perspectives and to evaluate the health and economic burden of CRE to the USA. RESULTS Depending on the infection type, the median cost of a single CRE infection can range from $22 484 to $66 031 for hospitals, $10 440 to $31 621 for third-party payers, and $37 778 to $83 512 for society. An infection incidence of 2.93 per 100 000 population in the USA (9418 infections) would cost hospitals $275 million (95% CR $217-334 million), third-party payers $147 million (95% CR $129-172 million), and society $553 million (95% CR $303-1593 million) with a 25% attributable mortality, and would result in the loss of 8841 (95% CR 5805-12 420) quality-adjusted life years. An incidence of 15 per 100 000 (48 213 infections) would cost hospitals $1.4 billion (95% CR $1.1-1.7 billion), third-party payers $0.8 billion (95% CR $0.6-0.8 billion), and society $2.8 billion (95% CR $1.6-8.2 billion), and result in the loss of 45 261 quality-adjusted life years. CONCLUSIONS The cost of CRE is higher than the annual cost of many chronic diseases and of many acute diseases. Costs rise proportionally with the incidence of CRE, increasing by 2.0 times, 3.4 times, and 5.1 times for incidence rates of 6, 10, and 15 per 100 000 persons.

Abstract
We sequenced the whole transcriptome of the marine mysid Neomysis awatschensis (Crustacea: Mysidacea) using Illumina RNA-seq. De novo assembly was performed with 14,018,702 raw reads using Trinity, resulting in 82,434 contigs. Transdecoder found 22,141 candidate coding contigs with homology to other species by BLAST analysis. Functional gene annotation was performed by Gene Ontology, InterProScan, and KEGG pathway analyses. We generated an expressed gene catalog for the mysid N. awatschensis to serve as a resource for marine environmental genomic and ecotoxicogenomic studies focused on uncovering the molecular mechanisms underlying the responses of N. awatschensis to environmental stressors and chemicals.

Abstract
Abies koreana is an endemic and rare species from Korea and is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Although the genetic diversity assessment for current population of A. koreana needs to be performed urgently, no microsatellite markers have been developed for this species. In the present study, we developed 22 novel polymorphic microsatellite loci and the characteristics of these loci were determined in A. koreana as well as in Abies nephrolepis, the most closely related species, and these loci were compared with previously reported microsatellite markers developed for the Abies genus. Genomic sequence (161 Mbp; 325,776 reads) was obtained from one individual of A. koreana using Roche 454 GS-FLX Titanium sequencing and 19,258 repeat motifs were identified from it. A total of 288 primer pairs with high copy numbers of di-repeat motifs were evaluated for amplification in A. koreana and A. nephrolepis. A total of 71 primer pairs successfully amplified fragments, of which 22 showed polymorphisms in A. koreana and A. nephrolepis. The average expected diversity was 0.767 and 0.717 in A. koreana and A. nephrolepis, respectively; these heterozygosity levels were moderate compared to the previously reported microsatellite loci from Abies species. This is the first set of microsatellite markers developed for A. koreana as well as A. nephrolepis and further population genetic studies of both species and genetic delimitation can be carried out for the species conservation and management.

We report the first identification of the entire complement of the eight typical homeobox (hox) genes (lab, pb, Dfd, scr, antp, ubx, Abd-A, and Abd-B) and the ftz gene in a 192.8 kb region in the cyclopoid copepod Paracyclopina nana. A Hox3 gene ortholog was not present in the P. nana hox gene cluster, while the P. nana Dfd gene was transcribed in the opposite direction to the Daphnia pulex Dfd gene, but in the same direction as the Dfd genes of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster and red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Abstract
This study identified the actual conditions for safe anticancer drug management among nurses and the relationship between level of awareness and performance of anticancer drug safety regulations in terms of preparation, administration, and disposal. The respondents were 236 nurses working with chemotherapy in wards and outpatient clinics in five hospitals in and near Seoul. Safety regulations provided for the anticancer drug the Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA, 1999), as modified for an earlier study, were used. The results showed that the level of awareness and performance on the anticancer drug safety regulations indicate their preparation (3.38±0.55, 2.38±0.98), administration (3.52±0.46, 3.17±0.70), general handling and disposal (3.33±0.54, 2.42±0.90) on a scale 0 to 5. Also, there were significant differences in job positions, work experience, type of preparation, and continuing education and a positive relationship between the level of awareness and nursing performance. Abstract
Background: Docetaxel improves symptoms and survival in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). However, ∼50% of patients are chemoresistant. This study examined whether changes in cytokine levels predict for docetaxel resistance in vitro and in a clinical cohort. Methods: PC3 cells or their docetaxel-resistant subline (PC3Rx) were co-cultured with U937 monocytes, with and without docetaxel treatment, and cytokine levels were measured. The circulating levels of 28 cytokines were measured pre-/post cycle 1 of docetaxel from 55 men with CRPC, and compared with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response. Results: PC3Rx-U937 co-culture expressed more cytokines, chiefly markers of alternative macrophage differentiation, compared with PC3-U937 co-culture. Docetaxel treatment enhanced cytokine production by PC3Rx-U937 co-culture, while reducing cytokine levels in PC3-U937. In patients, changes in the levels of seven circulating cytokines (macrophage inhibitory cytokine 1 (MIC1), interleukin (IL)-1ra, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-12 and IFNγ) after cycle 1 of docetaxel were associated with progressive disease (all P<0.05). The combination of changes in MIC1, IL-4 and IL-6 most strongly predicted PSA response (P=0.002). Conclusions: In vitro studies suggest docetaxel resistance is mediated, at least in part, by cytokines induced by the interaction between the docetaxel-resistant tumour cells and macrophages. Early changes in circulating cytokine levels were associated with docetaxel resistance in CRPC patients. When considered together, these data suggest a significant role for the inflammatory response and macrophages in the development of docetaxel resistance in CRPC.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was through a survey of awareness of cancer and cancer screening of Korean community residents to identify the stereotypes of cancer and bases for development of improved screening programs for early detection. Subjects were residing in South Korea Gangwon-Province and were over 30 years and under 69 years old. The total was 2,700 persons which underwent structured telephone survey questionnaires considered with specific rates of gender, region, and age. For statistical analysis, PASW Statistics 17.0 WIN was utilized. Frequency analysis, the Chi-square (χ?) test for univariate analysis, and logistic regression analysis were performed. The awareness of cancer and cancer screening in subjects differed by gender, region and age. For the idea of cancer, women thought about death less than men (OR: 0.73, p<0.001). On the other hand, women had negative thoughts - fear/terror/suffering/pain/pain - more than their male counterparts (OR: 2.04, p<0.001). Next, for the idea of cancer screening, women recognized fear/terror more than men (OR: 1.38, p<0.01). The higher age, the more tension/anxiety/worry/burden/irritated/pressure (OR: 1.43, p<0.01, OR: 2.15, p<0.001, OR: 2.49, p<0.001)). People may be reminded of fear and death for cancer and of fear, terror, tension and anxiety for cancer screening. To change vague fear and negative attitudes of cancer could increase the rate of cancer screening as well as help to improve the quality of life for community cancer survivors and facilitate return to normal social life. Therefore, it is necessary to provide promotion and education to improve the awareness of cancer and cancer screening.

Abstract
Rotifers (phylum Rotifera) are the most common non-arthropod animal. Species in the monogonont rotifer Brachionus are widely distributed in coastal areas and play an important role in aquatic food webs as secondary producers. Brachionus koreanus is currently being developed as a model system for ecotoxicological research. We sequenced the whole transcriptome of B. koreanus using RNA-seq technology. De novo sequence assembly by Trinity integrated with TransDecoder produced 36,918 contigs, including putative alternatively spliced variants. A total of 13,784 genes were identified based on Blast analysis. KEGG pathway analysis detected transcripts annotated as coding for enzymes involved in metabolic pathways, the immune system, translation, and signal transduction. Most identified enzymes and pathways were involved in carbohydrate metabolism, such as the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and glycolysis. We anticipate that the availability of whole transcriptome data for B. koreanus will provide insights into rotifer biology and physiology and facilitate the development of biomarkers for ecotoxicology studies.

Abstract
Background Whales have captivated the human imagination for millennia. These incredible cetaceans are the only mammals that have adapted to life in the open oceans and have been a source of human food, fuel and tools around the globe. The transition from land to water has led to various aquatic specializations related to hairless skin and ability to regulate their body temperature in cold water. Results We present four common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) genomes with depth of ×13 ~ ×17 coverage and perform resequencing technology without a reference sequence. Our results indicated the time to the most recent common ancestors of common minke whales to be about 2.3574 (95% HPD, 1.1521 – 3.9212) million years ago. Further, we found that genes associated with epilation and tooth-development showed signatures of positive selection, supporting the morphological uniqueness of whales. Conclusions This whole-genome sequencing offers a chance to better understand the evolutionary journey of one of the largest mammals on earth. Abstract
Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals and causes severe economic loss and devastating effect on international trade of animal or animal products. Since FMD outbreaks have recently occurred in some Asian countries, it is important to understand the relationship between diverse immunogenomic structures of host animals and the immunity to foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). We performed genome wide association study based on high-density bovine single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip for identifying FMD resistant loci in Holstein cattle. Among 624532 SNP after quality control, we found that 11 SNPs on 3 chromosomes (chr17, 22, and 15) were significantly associated with the trait at the p.adjust <0.05 after PERMORY test. Most significantly associated SNPs were located on chromosome 17, around the genes Myosin XVIIIB and Seizure related 6 homolog (mouse)-like, which were associated with lung cancer. Based on the known function of the genes nearby the significant SNPs, the FMD resistant animals might have ability to improve their innate immune response to FMDV infection.

Abstract
Background Nuclear receptors (NRs) are a large superfamily of proteins defined by a DNA-binding domain (DBD) and a ligand-binding domain (LBD). They function as transcriptional regulators to control expression of genes involved in development, homeostasis, and metabolism. The number of NRs differs from species to species, because of gene duplications and/or lineage-specific gene losses during metazoan evolution. Many NRs in arthropods interact with the ecdysteroid hormone and are involved in ecdysone-mediated signaling in arthropods. The nuclear receptor superfamily complement has been reported in several arthropods, including crustaceans, but not in copepods. We identified the entire NR repertoire of the copepod Tigriopus japonicus, which is an important marine model species for ecotoxicology and environmental genomics. Results Using whole genome and transcriptome sequences, we identified a total of 31 nuclear receptors in the genome of T. japonicus. Nomenclature of the nuclear receptors was determined based on the sequence similarities of the DNA-binding domain (DBD) and ligand-binding domain (LBD). The 7 subfamilies of NRs separate into five major clades (subfamilies NR1, NR2, NR3, NR4, and NR5/6). Although the repertoire of NR members in, T. japonicus was similar to that reported for other arthropods, there was an expansion of the NR1 subfamily in Tigriopus japonicus. The twelve unique nuclear receptors identified in T. japonicus are members of NR1L. This expansion may be a unique lineage-specific feature of crustaceans. Interestingly, E78 and HR83, which are present in other arthropods, were absent from the genomes of T. japonicus and two congeneric copepod species (T. japonicus and Tigriopus californicus), suggesting copepod lineage-specific gene loss. Conclusions We identified all NR receptors present in the copepod, T. japonicus. Knowledge of the copepod nuclear receptor repertoire will contribute to a better understanding of copepod- and crustacean-specific NR evolution. Abstract
To investigate the effect of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on the circadian rhythm pathway, we cloned clock and circadian rhythmic pathway-associated genes (e.g. Per2, Cry1, Cry2, and BMAL1) in the self-fertilizing mangrove killifish Kryptolebias marmoratus. The promoter region of Km-clock had 1 aryl hydrocarbon receptor element (AhRE, GTGCGTGACA) and 8 estrogen receptor (ER) half-sites, indicating that the AhRE and ER half sites would likely be associated with regulation of clock protein activity during EDCs-induced cellular stress. The Km-clock protein domains (bHLH, PAS1, PAS2) were highly conserved in five additional fish species (zebrafish, Japanese medaka, Southern platyfish, Nile tilapia, and spotted green pufferfish), suggesting that the fish clock protein may play an important role in controlling endogenous circadian rhythms. The promoter regions of Km-BMAL1, -Cry1, -Cry2, and -Per2 were found to contain several xenobiotic response elements (XREs), indicating that EDCs may be able to alter the expression of these genes. To analyze the endogenous circadian rhythm in K. marmoratus, we measured expression of Km-clock and other circadian rhythmic genes (e.g. Per2, Cry1, Cry2, and BMAL1) in different tissues, and found ubiquitous expression, although there were different patterns of transcript amplification during different developmental stages. In an estrogen (E2)-exposed group, Km-clock expression was down-regulated, however, a hydroxytamoxifen (TMX, nonsteroid estrogen antagonist)-exposed group showed an upregulated pattern of Km-clock expression, suggesting that the expression of Km-clock is closely associated with exposure to EDCs. In response to the exposure of bisphenol A (BPA) and 4-tert-octyphenol (OP), Km-clock expression was down-regulated in the pituitary/brain, muscle, and skin in both gender types (hermaphrodite and secondary male). In juvenile K. marmoratus liver tissue, expression of Km-clock and other circadian rhythmic pathway-associated genes showed a regular oscillation pattern over a period of approximately 24h during a 12L:12D cycle. However, the circadian rhythm of BPA-exposed juvenile K. marmoratus liver tissue was perturbed over a 12L:12D period. This study will aid in our understanding of how EDCs perturb endogenous circadian rhythms, particularly in BPA-exposed fish liver tissue.

Abstract
Nuclear radioisotope accidents are potentially ecologically devastating due to their impact on marine organisms. To examine the effects of exposure of a marine organism to radioisotopes, we irradiated the intertidal copepod Tigriopus japonicus with several doses of gamma radiation and analyzed the effects on mortality, fecundity, and molting by assessing antioxidant enzyme activities and gene expression patterns. No mortality was observed at 96h, even in response to exposure to a high dose (800Gy) of radiation, but mortality rate was significantly increased 120h (5 days) after exposure to 600 or 800Gy gamma ray radiation. We observed a dose-dependent reduction in fecundity of ovigerous females; even the group irradiated with 50Gy showed a significant reduction in fecundity, suggesting that gamma rays are likely to have a population level effect. In addition, we observed growth retardation, particularly at the nauplius stage, in individuals after gamma irradiation. In fact, nauplii irradiated with more than 200Gy, though able to molt to copepodite stage 1, did not develop into adults. Upon gamma radiation, T. japonicus showed a dose-dependent increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, the activities of several antioxidant enzymes, and expression of double-stranded DNA break damage genes (e.g. DNA-PK, Ku70, Ku80). At a low level (sub-lethal dose) of gamma irradiation, we found dose-dependent upregulation of p53, implying cellular damage in T. japonicus in response to sub-lethal doses of gamma irradiation, suggesting that T. japonicus is not susceptible to sub-lethal doses of gamma irradiation. Additionally, antioxidant genes, phase II enzyme (e.g. GSTs), and cellular chaperone genes (e.g. Hsps) that are involved in cellular defense mechanisms also showed the same expression patterns for sublethal doses of gamma irradiation (50-200Gy). These findings indicate that sublethal doses of gamma radiation can induce oxidative stress-mediated DNA damage and increase the expression of antioxidant enzymes and proteins with chaperone-related functions, thereby significantly affecting life history parameters such as fecundity and molting in the copepod T. japonicus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The efficacy of antibiotics in preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) depends on the timing of administration relative to the start of surgery. However, currently, both the timing of and recommendations for administration vary substantially. AIM To determine how the economic value from the hospital perspective of preoperative antibiotics varies with the timing of administration for orthopaedic procedures. METHODS Computational decision and operational models were developed from the hospital perspective. Baseline analyses looked at current timing of administration, while additional analyses varied the timing of administration, compliance with recommended guidelines, and the goal time-interval. FINDINGS Beginning antibiotic administration within 0-30 min prior to surgery resulted in the lowest costs and SSIs. Operationally, linking to a pre-surgical activity, administering antibiotics prior to incision but after anaesthesia-ready time was optimal, as 92.1% of the time, antibiotics were administered in the optimal time-interval (0-30 min prior to incision). Improving administration compliance from 80% to 90% for this pre-surgical activity results in cost savings of $447 per year for a hospital performing 100 orthopaedic operations a year. CONCLUSION This study quantifies the potential cost-savings when antibiotic administration timing is improved, which in turn can guide the amount hospitals should invest to address this issue.

Abstract
Background: Docetaxel is the first-line chemotherapy for castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). However, response rates are ∼50% and determined quite late in the treatment schedule, thus non-responders are subjected to unnecessary toxicity. The potential of circulating microRNAs as early biomarkers of docetaxel response in CRPC patients was investigated in this study. Methods: Global microRNA profiling was performed on docetaxel-resistant and sensitive cell lines to identify candidate circulating microRNA biomarkers. Custom Taqman Array MicroRNA cards were used to measure the levels of 46 candidate microRNAs in plasma/serum samples, collected before and after docetaxel treatment, from 97 CRPC patients. Results: Fourteen microRNAs were associated with serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response or overall survival, according to Mann–Whitney U or log-rank tests. Non-responders to docetaxel and patients with shorter survival generally had high pre-docetaxel levels of miR-200 family members or decreased/unchanged post-docetaxel levels of miR-17 family members. Multivariate Cox regression with bootstrapping validation showed that pre-docetaxel miR-200b levels, post-docetaxel change in miR-20a levels, pre-docetaxel haemoglobin levels and visceral metastasis were independent predictors of overall survival when modelled together. Conclusions: Our study suggests that circulating microRNAs are potential early predictors of docetaxel chemotherapy outcome, and warrant further investigation in clinical trials.

Abstract
Our objective was to model the cost-effectiveness and economic value of routine peri-operative Staphylococcus aureus screening and decolonization of lung and heart-lung transplant recipients from hospital and third-party payer perspectives. We used clinical data from 596 lung and heart-lung transplant recipients to develop a model in TreeAge Pro 2009 (Williamsport, MA, USA). Sensitivity analyses varied S. aureus colonization rate (5-15 %), probability of infection if colonized (10-30 %), and decolonization efficacy (25-90 %). Data were collected from the Cardiothoracic Transplant Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Consecutive lung and heart-lung transplant recipients from January 2006 to December 2010 were enrolled retrospectively. Baseline rates of S. aureus colonization, infection and decolonization efficacy were 9.6 %, 36.7 %, and 31.9 %, respectively. Screening and decolonization was economically dominant for all scenarios tested, providing more cost savings and health benefits than no screening. Savings per case averted (2012 $US) ranged from $73,567 to $133,157 (hospital perspective) and $10,748 to $16,723 (third party payer perspective), varying with the probability of colonization, infection, and decolonization efficacy. Using our clinical data, screening and decolonization led to cost savings per case averted of $240,602 (hospital perspective) and averted 6.7 S. aureus infections (4.3 MRSA and 2.4 MSSA); 89 patients needed to be screened to prevent one S. aureus infection. Our data support routine S. aureus screening and decolonization of lung and heart-lung transplant patients. The economic value of screening and decolonization was greater than in previous models of other surgical populations.

Abstract
Infertile men with azoospermia commonly have associated microdeletions in the azoospermia factor (AZF) region of the Y chromosome, sex chromosome mosaicism, or sex chromosome rearrangements. In this study, we describe an unusual 46,XX and 45,X mosaicism with a rare Y chromosome rearrangement in a phenotypically normal male patient. The patient's karyotype was 46,XX[50]/45,X[25]/46,X,der(Y)(pter→q11.222::p11.2→pter)[25]. The derivative Y chromosome had a deletion at Yq11.222 and was duplicated at Yp11.2. Two copies of the SRY gene were confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis, and complete deletion of the AZFb and AZFc regions was shown by multiplex-PCR for microdeletion analysis. Both X chromosomes of the predominant mosaic cell line (46,XX) were isodisomic and derived from the maternal gamete, as determined by examination of short tandem repeat markers. We postulate that the derivative Y chromosome might have been generated during paternal meiosis or early embryogenesis. Also, we suggest that the very rare mosaicism of isodisomic X chromosomes might be formed during maternal meiosis II or during postzygotic division derived from the 46,X,der(Y)/ 45,X lineage because of the instability of the derivative Y chromosome. To our knowledge, this is the first confirmatory study to verify the origin of a sex chromosome mosaicism with a Y chromosome rearrangement.

Abstract
Adipocytes mainly function as energy storage and endocrine cells. Adipose tissues showed the biological and genetic difference based on their depots. The difference of adipocytes between depots might be influenced by the inherent genetic programing for adipogenesis. We used RNA-seq technique to investigate the transcriptomes in 3 adipose tissues of omental (O), subcutaneous (S) and intramuscular (I) fats in cattle. Sequence reads were obtained from Illumina HiSeq2000 and mapped to the bovine genome using Tophat2. Differentially expressed genes (DEG) between adipose tissues were detected by EdgeR. We identified 5797, 2156, and 5455 DEGs in the comparison between OI, OS, and IS respectively and also found 5657 DEGs in the comparison between the intramuscular and the combined omental and subcutaneous fats (C) (FDR<0.01). Depot specifically up- and down- regulated DEGs were 853 in S, 48 in I, and 979 in O. The numbers of DEGs and functional annotation studies suggested that I had the different genetic profile compared to other two adipose tissues. In I, DEGs involved in the developmental process (eg. EGR2, FAS, and KLF7) were up-regulated and those in the immune system process were down-regulated. Many DEGs from the adipose tissues were enriched in the various GO terms of developmental process and KEGG pathway analysis showed that the ECM-receptor interaction was one of commonly enriched pathways in all of the 3 adipose tissues and also functioned as a sub-pathway of other enriched pathways. However, genes involved in the ECM-receptor interaction were differentially regulated depending on the depots. Collagens, main ECM constituents, were significantly up-regulated in S and integrins, transmembrane receptors, were up-regulated in I. Different laminins were up-regulated in the different depots. This comparative transcriptome analysis of three adipose tissues suggested that the interactions between ECM components and transmembrane receptors of fat cells depend on the depot specific adipogenesis.

Abstract
The modern horse (Equus caballus) is the product of over 50 million yrs of evolution. The athletic abilities of the horse have been enhanced during the past 6000 yrs under domestication. Therefore, the horse serves as a valuable model to understand the physiology and molecular mechanisms of adaptive responses to exercise. The structure and function of skeletal muscle show remarkable plasticity to the physical and metabolic challenges following exercise. Here, we reveal an evolutionary layer of responsiveness to exercise-stress in the skeletal muscle of the racing horse. We analysed differentially expressed genes and their co-expression networks in a large-scale RNA-sequence dataset comparing expression before and after exercise. By estimating genome-wide dN/dS ratios using six mammalian genomes, and FST and iHS using re-sequencing data derived from 20 horses, we were able to peel back the evolutionary layers of adaptations to exercise-stress in the horse. We found that the oldest and thickest layer (dN/dS) consists of system-wide tissue and organ adaptations. We further find that, during the period of horse domestication, the older layer (FST) is mainly responsible for adaptations to inflammation and energy metabolism, and the most recent layer (iHS) for neurological system process, cell adhesion, and proteolysis.

Abstract
The identity of the mangrove sesarmid crab Clistocoeloma balansae A. Milne-Edwards, 1873, is clarified on the basis of the types from New Caledonia, and fresh material from Vanuatu and the Philippines. Sesarma (Sesarma) tectum Rathbun, 1914, is shown to be a junior subjective synonym of C. balansae A. Milne-Edwards, 1873. A new species, C. melanesicum, superficially similar to C. balansae, is described from Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and, Solomon Islands.
