Abstract
We studied the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) of two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure CrI3/In2Se3/CrI3 using density functional theory calculations and symmetry analysis. The spontaneous polarization in the In2Se3 ferroelectric layer and the antiferromagnetic ordering in CrI3 layers break the mirror and the time-reversal symmetry, thus activating MOKE. We show that the Kerr angle can be reversed by either the polarization or the antiferromagnetic order parameter. Our results suggest that ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic 2D heterostructures could be exploited for ultracompact information storage devices, where the information is encoded by the two ferroelectric or the two time-reversed antiferromagnetic states and the read-out is performed optically by MOKE.

Abstract
The control of heat at the nanoscale via the excitation of localized surface plasmons in nanoparticles (NPs) irradiated with light holds great potential in several fields (cancer therapy, catalysis, desalination). To date, most thermoplasmonic applications are based on Ag and Au NPs, whose cost of raw materials inevitably limits the scalability for industrial applications requiring large amounts of photothermal NPs, as in the case of desalination plants. On the other hand, alternative nanomaterials proposed so far exhibit severe restrictions associated with the insufficient photothermal efficacy in the visible, the poor chemical stability, and the challenging scalability. Here, it is demonstrated the outstanding potential of NiSe and CoSe topological nodal-line semimetals for thermoplasmonics. The anisotropic dielectric properties of NiSe and CoSe activate additional plasmonic resonances. Specifically, NiSe and CoSe NPs support multiple localized surface plasmons in the optical range, resulting in a broadband matching with sunlight radiation spectrum. Finally, it is validated the proposed NiSe and CoSe-based thermoplasmonic platform by implementing solar-driven membrane distillation by adopting NiSe and CoSe nanofillers embedded in a polymeric membrane for seawater desalination. Remarkably, replacing Ag with NiSe and CoSe for solar membrane distillation increases the transmembrane flux by 330% and 690%, respectively. Correspondingly, costs of raw materials are also reduced by 24 and 11 times, respectively. The results pave the way for the advent of NiSe and CoSe for efficient and sustainable thermoplasmonics and related applications exploiting sunlight within the paradigm of the circular blue economy.

Abstract
We study a class of temporal metamaterials characterized by time-varying dielectric permittivity waveforms of duration much smaller than the characteristic wave-dynamical timescale. In the analogy between spatial and temporal metamaterials, such a short-pulsed regime can be viewed as the temporal counterpart of metasurfaces. We introduce a general and compact analytical formalism for modeling the interaction of a short-pulsed metamaterial with an electromagnetic wave packet. Specifically, we elucidate the role of local and nonlocal effects, as well as the time-reversal symmetry breaking, and we show how they can be harnessed to perform elementary analog computing, such as first and second derivatives. Our theory validated against full-wave numerical simulations suggests a novel route for manipulating electromagnetic waves without relying on long, periodic temporal modulations. Just as metasurfaces have played a pivotal role in the technological viability and practical applicability of conventional (spatial) metamaterials, short-pulsed metamaterials may catalyze the development of temporal and space-time metamaterials.

Abstract
Optical parametric oscillators are widely used as pulsed and continuous-wave tunable sources for innumerable applications, such as quantum technologies, imaging, and biophysics. A key drawback is material dispersion, which imposes a phase-matching condition that generally entails a complex design and setup, thus hindering tunability and miniaturization. Here we show that the burden of phase-matching is surprisingly absent in parametric micro-resonators utilizing mono-layer transition-metal dichalcogenides as quadratic nonlinear materials. By the exact solution of nonlinear Maxwell equations and first-principle calculations of the semiconductor nonlinear response, we devise a novel kind of phase-matching-free miniaturized parametric oscillator operating at conventional pump intensities. We find that different two-dimensional semiconductors yield degenerate and non-degenerate emission at various spectral regions due to doubly resonant mode excitation, which can be tuned by varying the incidence angle of the external pump laser. In addition, we show that high-frequency electrical modulation can be achieved by doping via electrical gating, which can be used to efficiently shift the threshold for parametric oscillation. Our results pave the way for the realization of novel ultra-fast tunable micron-sized sources of entangled photons-a key device underpinning any quantum protocol. Highly miniaturized optical parametric oscillators may also be employed in lab-on-chip technologies for biophysics, detection of environmental pollution and security.

Abstract
We show that a homogeneous and isotropic slab, illuminated by a circularly polarized beam with no topological charge, produces vortices of order 2 in the opposite circularly polarized components of the reflected and transmitted fields, as a consequence of the transverse magnetic and transverse electric asymmetric response of the rotationally invariant system. In addition, in the epsilon-near-zero regime, we find that vortex generation is remarkably efficient in subwavelength thick slabs up to the paraxial regime. This physically stems from the fact that a vacuum paraxial field can excite a nonparaxial field inside an epsilon-near-zero slab since it hosts slowly varying fields over physically large portions of the bulk. Our theoretical predictions indicate that epsilon-near-zero media hold great potential as nanophotonic elements for manipulating the angular momentum of the radiation, since they are available without resorting to complicated micro- or nanofabrication processes and can operate even at very small (ultraviolet) wavelengths.

Abstract
We investigate the interaction of two pulses (pump and probe) scattered by a nonlinear epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) slab whose thickness is comparable with the ENZ wavelength. We show that when the probe has a narrow spectrum localized around the ENZ wavelength, its transmission is dramatically affected by the intensity of the pump. Conversely, if the probe is not in the ENZ regime, its propagation is not noticeably affected by the pump. Such all-optical modulation is due to the oversensitive character of the ENZ regime, and it is so efficient that it even occurs in a wavelength thick slab.

Abstract
Epsilon-Near-Zero materials exhibit a transition in the real part of the dielectric permittivity from positive to negative value as a function of wavelength. Here we study metal-dielectric layered metamaterials in the homogenised regime (each layer has strongly subwavelength thickness) with zero real part of the permittivity in the near-infrared region. By optically pumping the metamaterial we experimentally show that close to the Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) wavelength the permittivity exhibits a marked transition from metallic (negative permittivity) to dielectric (positive permittivity) as a function of the optical power. Remarkably, this transition is linear as a function of pump power and occurs on time scales of the order of the 100 fs pump pulse that need not be tuned to a specific wavelength. The linearity of the permittivity increase allows us to express the response of the metamaterial in terms of a standard third order optical nonlinearity: this shows a clear inversion of the roles of the real and imaginary parts in crossing the ENZ wavelength, further supporting an optically induced change in the physical behaviour of the metamaterial.

Abstract
IntroductionThe level of express emotion (EE) is a measure of the attitude of close relatives towards a patient and include dimensions as critical comments, hostility and emotional over-involvement. Anger and impulsivity may lead to self-injurious and aggressive behaviours, and often represent an obstacle to treatment.AimsTo compare anger expression, impulsivity and expressed emotion in ED and SCHZ, and to explore the different level of caregivers’ EE in the two groups.MethodsTwenty-five female with ED diagnosis and 25 patients with schizophrenia, were recruited at the Psychiatry Ward and outpatient Service of AOU – Novara, during one year period. Patient's assessment included Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF), Structured Clinical Interview (SCID 1-2), Level of Expressed Emotion Scale (LEE), Paykel scale, State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAY 1-2), State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXY), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11).ResultsLevels of anxiety (both state and trait) are higher in the ED group than in SCHZ. As far as the STAXY is concerned, SCHZ patients score higher than ED ones on control over anger, while general index of anger expression was higher in ED patients. We did not find significant differences in EE between two groups, except for the patient's emotional response of the patient to the disease, which was greater among SCHZ. Both SCHZ and ED patients scored higher on the LEE, Paykel and STAY than their caregivers.ConclusionsSCHZ and ED patients show different patterns of anxiety and anger, but similar profile as far as EE is concerned. Abstract
We suggest that electromagnetic chirality, generally displayed by 3D or 2D complex chiral structures, can occur in 1D patterned composites whose components are achiral. This feature is highly unexpected in a 1D system which is geometrically achiral since its mirror image can always be superposed onto it by a 180 deg rotation. We analytically evaluate from first principles the bianisotropic response of multilayered metamaterials and we show that the chiral tensor is not vanishing if the system is geometrically one-dimensional chiral; i.e., its mirror image cannot be superposed onto it by using translations without resorting to rotations. As a signature of 1D chirality, we show that 1D chiral metamaterials support optical activity and we prove that this phenomenon undergoes a dramatic nonresonant enhancement in the epsilon-near-zero regime where the magnetoelectric coupling can become dominant in the constitutive relations.

Abstract
We theoretically demonstrate the realization of a complete canonical set of all-optical logic gates (AND, OR, NOT), with a persistent (stored) output, by combining propagative spatial solitons in a photorefractive crystal and dissipative cavity solitons in a downstream broad-area vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). The system uses same-color, optical-axis aligned input and output channels with fixed readout locations, while switching from one gate to another is achieved by simply varying the potential applied to the photorefractive crystal. The inputs are Gaussian beams launched in the photorefractive crystal and the output is a bistable, persistent soliton in the VCSEL with a 'robust' eye diagram and large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Fast switching and intrinsic parallelism suggest that high bit flow rates can be obtained.

Abstract
We theoretically investigate the homogenization of the dielectric response to transverse electric waves of a transverse grating characterized by the Kapitza condition; i.e., the permittivity is rapidly modulated with a modulation depth scaling as the large wavelength-to-modulation-period ratio. We show that the resulting effective dielectric permittivity, in addition to the standard average of the underlying dielectric profile, has a further contribution arising from the fast and deep dielectric modulation. Such a contribution turns out to be comparable with the other one and hence can provide an additional method for designing dielectric metamaterials. As an example, we discuss an effective metal-to-dielectric transition produced by the Kapitza contribution obtained by changing the grating depth, a remarkable result for applications involving epsilon-near-zero metamaterial design.

Abstract
We theoretically investigate the terahertz (THz) dielectric response of a semiconductor slab hosting a tunable grating photogenerated by the interference of two tilted infrared (IR) plane waves. In the case where the grating period is much smaller than the THz wavelength, we numerically evaluate the ordinary and extraordinary component of the effective permittivity tensor by resorting to electromagnetic full-wave simulation coupled to the dynamics of charge carriers excited by IR radiation. We show that the photo-induced metamaterial optical response can be tailored by varying the grating and it ranges from birefringent to hyperbolic to anisotropic negative dielectric without resorting to microfabrication.

Abstract
We show that in the presence of a rapidly modulated dielectric permittivity with a large modulation depth (Kapitza medium) a novel and robust regime of diffractionless electromagnetic propagation occurs. This happens when the mean value to depth ratio of the dielectric profile is comparable to the small ratio between the modulation period and the wavelength. We show that the standard effective medium theory is inadequate to describe the proposed regime and that its occurrence is not substantially hampered by medium losses. We check the feasibility of the proposed regime by means of a large modulation depth metal-dielectric layered medium whose electromagnetic behavior is analytically investigated.

Abstract
We consider a hybrid system consisting of a centrosymmetric photorefractive crystal in contact with a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. We numerically investigate the generation and control of cavity solitons (CSs) by propagating a plane wave through electro-activated solitonic waveguides in the crystal. In such a compound scheme, which couples a propagative/conservative field dynamics to a bistable/dissipative one, we show that by changing the electro-activation voltage of the crystal, the CSs can be turned on and shifted with controlled velocity across the device section, on the scale of tens of nanoseconds. The configuration can be exploited for applications to optical information encoding and processing.

Abstract
We theoretically consider infrared-driven hyperbolic metamaterials able to spatially filter terahertz (THz) radiation. The metamaterial is a slab made of alternating semiconductor and dielectric layers whose homogenized uniaxial response, at THz frequencies, shows principal permittivities of different signs. The gap provided by metamaterial hyperbolic dispersion allows the slab to stop spatial frequencies within a bandwidth tunable by changing the infrared radiation intensity. We numerically prove the device functionality by resorting to full wave simulation coupled to the dynamics of charge carries photoexcited by infrared radiation in semiconductor layers.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between the estimated adherence of HIV-1 infected patients with antiretroviral (ARV) therapy failure and drug-resistant mutations. We studied 40 patients with virological and immunological ARV-therapy failure. In order to assess the adherence of patients we used the SERAD questionnaire. Genomic sequencing of the HIV-1 pol gene was performed. 100% adherence was reported by 27 patients (67.5%) (adherent patients). Multivariate analysis showed that only baseline and nadir CD4+ counts maintained a significant correlation with the adherence. For PR and NNRTI mutations, we did not find any difference between the two groups of patients. Baseline NRTI mutations were higher in adherent patients than in non-adherent patients (p<0.05). No differences were found between plasma mutations and PBMC mutations. The authors conclude that genotypic resistance mutations were found in the majority of patients with ARV-therapy failure despite a good self-reported adherence to therapy. Adequate adherence to therapy is not the only key factor in viral suppression.

Abstract
In June 2009 in a commercial nursery in eastern Sicily (Italy), 3-year-old potted windmill palms (Trachycarpus fortunei (Hooker) H. Wendl.) showed a decline in growth, wilt, droop, and basal rot of the youngest leaves. The rot progressed inward and killed the bud. Initially, older leaves remained green but eventually the entire plant collapsed. Root rot was consistently associated with aboveground symptoms. Two Phytophthora species were consistently isolated from the petiole base, heart, roots, and rhizosphere soil of symptomatic plants on a selective medium (2) and occasionally recovered from roots and rhizosphere soil of asymptomatic plants. Pure cultures were obtained by single-hypha transfers and the two species were identified on the basis of morphological and molecular characters as Phytophthora palmivora and P. nicotianae. Both species were recovered from all symptomatic plants. From multiple tissue samples per plant, we recovered either or both species. On potato dextrose agar (PDA), P. palmivora isolates grew between 10 and 35°C, with the optimum at 27°C. On V8 juice agar, they produced elliptical to ovoid, papillate, caducous sporangia (32 to 78 × 23 to 39 μm) with a mean length/breadth (l/b) ratio of 1.8:1 and a short pedicel (mean pedicel length = 5 μm). Isolates of P. nicotianae produced arachnoid colonies on PDA, grew at 37°C but did not grow at 40°C. Sporangia (29 to 55 × 23 to 45 μm) were spherical to ovoid (l/b ratio 1.3:1), papillate and often bipapillate, and noncaducous. Isolates of both species produced amphigynous antheridia and oogonia only when paired with reference isolates of P. nicotianae of the A2 mating type. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA of two isolates of P. palmivora (IMI 398987 and IMI 398988) and an isolate of P. nicotianae (IMI 398989) from T. fortunei was amplified with primers ITS6/ITS4 and sequenced (1). Blast analysis of the sequences of isolates IMI 398987 and IMI 398988 (GenBank Accession Nos. HQ596556 and HQ596558) showed 99% homology with the sequence of two reference isolates of P. palmivora (GQ398157.1 and GU258862), while the sequence of isolate IMI 398989 (HQ596557) showed 99% homology with a reference isolate of P. nicotianae (EU331089.1). Pathogenicity of isolates IMI 398987 and IMI 398989 was proved by inoculating separately each isolate on 1-year-old potted plants of T. fortunei (10 plants per isolate). A zoospores suspension (2 × 104 zoospores/ml) was pipetted onto the petiole base of the three central leaves (200 μl per leaf) of each plant. Sterile water was used for control plants. All plants were incubated at 25 ± 2°C with 100% humidity for 48 h and then maintained in a greenhouse at 24 to 28°C. Within 3 weeks, all inoculated plants showed symptoms of bud rot. Control plants remained healthy. P. palmivora and P. nicotianae were reisolated only from inoculated plants. Bud rot of palms caused by P. palmivora was reported previously in Italy (3). However, to our knowledge, this is the first report of simultaneous infections of P. palmivora and P. nicotianae as causal agents of this disease. Outbreak of bud rot may have been favored by overhead sprinkler irrigation. Abstract
The genus Aeonium, family Crassulaceae, comprises approximately 35 species that are native to northern Africa and the Canary Islands. Tree aeonium (Aeonium arboreum (L.) Webb & Berthel.) is a bushy, perennial succulent with rosettes of tender, waxy leaves at the apex of few-branched or occasionally single, naked stems. Mature rosettes bear yellowish inflorescences. Aeoniums are cultivated as ornamentals in gardens and containers. During the summer of 2009, in a garden in eastern Sicily (southern Italy), 3-year-old potted plants of tree aeonium showed stunting, shrivelling, and chlorosis of leaves and drop of external leaves associated with root and basal stem rot. Drops of an amber exudate oozed from the basal stem. Tissues of the basal stem were soft, but no external necrosis was visible. A species of Phytophthora was consistently isolated from symptomatic roots and basal stem tissues on a medium selective for Oomycetes (2). Axenic cultures were obtained by single-hypha transfers. The pathogen was identified by morphological criteria as Phytophthora nicotianae B. de Haan; it formed stoloniferous colonies on potato dextrose agar and grew between 8 and 38°C, with the optimum at 30°C. On V8 juice agar it produced spherical, intercalary chlamydospores (mean diameter of 26 μm) and persistent, mono- and bipapillate, spherical to ovoid, ellipsoid, obpyriform sporangia that measured 29 to 56 × 22 to 45 μm with a mean length/breadth ratio of 1.3:1. All isolates were A2 mating type and formed spherical oogonia (mean diameter 28 ± 2 μm) with smooth walls and amphigynous antheridia in dual cultures with a reference isolate of the A1 mating type of P. nicotianae. BLAST analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA of a representative isolate from aeonium (IMI 398812, GenBank Accession No. HQ433333) amplified by PCR using the ITS6/ITS4 universal primers (1), revealed 99% similarity with the sequences of a reference isolate of P. nicotianae available in GenBank (Accession No. EU331089.1). Pathogenicity of isolate IMI 398812 was demonstrated by transplanting cuttings of A. arboreum into pots filled with a mixture of steam-sterilized sandy loam soil and inoculum (4% vol/vol) produced by growing the isolate for 20 days on wheat kernels. Ten plants were transplanted into 3-liter pots (two plants per pot) while 10 plants, transplanted into pots filled with a mixture of steam-sterilized soil and noninoculated kernels, were used as controls. Plants were kept in a greenhouse at 25 to 28°C and watered daily to field capacity. Thirty to forty days after the transplanting into infested soil, cuttings developed the same symptoms observed on plants with natural infections. Control plants remained symptomless. P. nicotianae was reisolated from symptomatic plants, thereby completing Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. nicotianae on an Aeonium species worldwide. The economic relevance of this disease is minor because aeoniums are not cultivated on a large scale. Moreover, the disease may be easily prevented by avoiding excess irrigation water since aeoniums need a well-drained soil or potting mix and do not tolerate soil waterlogging. References: (1) D. E. Abstract
We show that a nonlinear metal-dielectric layered slab of subwavelength thickness and very small average dielectric permittivity displays optical multistable behavior at arbitrary low optical intensities. This is due to the fact that, in the presence of the small linear permittivity, one of the multiple electromagnetic slab states exists no matter how small is the transmitted optical intensity. We prove that multiple states at ultra-low optical intensities can be reached only by simultaneously operating on the incident optical intensity and incidence angle. By performing full wave simulations, we prove that the predicted phenomenology is feasible and very robust.

Abstract
Approximately 150,000 potted mandevillas (Apocynaceae) are produced each year in the Etna District of eastern Sicily. Since 2004, leaf chlorosis, wilt, and sudden collapse of the entire plant associated with root and basal stem rot of 6- to 12-month-old potted mandevillas, including Mandevilla × amabilis 'Alice du Pont', M. splendens, and M. sanderi 'Alba', 'My Fair Lady', and 'Scarlet Pimpernel', have been observed in six nurseries. Incidence of affected plants varied from 5 to 40%. Four Phytophthora species were consistently isolated from rotted roots and stems on a selective medium (2). Pure cultures of the first species produced colonies with a camellia pattern on potato dextrose agar and grew between 10 and 37°C with an optimum of 27°C. On V8 juice agar they produced ellipsoid to obpyriform (length/breadth [l/b] 1.45:1), nonpapillate sporangia with internal proliferation, coralloid, spherical hyphal swellings and both terminal and intercalary chlamydospores. In dual cultures with A1 and A2 isolates of P. nicotianae, all isolates produced oogonia with amphyginous antheridia only with A2 isolates. Isolates of the second species formed petaloid colonies, had an optimum growth temperature of 25°C, and produced mono- and bipapillate, ovoid to limoniform sporangia (l/b 1.40:1); they did not produce gametangia. Isolates of the third species formed colonies with a slight petaloid pattern and grew between 2 and 30°C with an optimum of 25°C. Sporangia were obpyriform (l/b 1.48:1), nonpapillate, and proliferous. All isolates were A2 mating type. The isolates of the fourth species formed arachnoid colonies, grew between 8 and 38°C with an optimum of 30°C, and produced mono- and bipapillate, ellipsoid, and obpyriform (l/b 1.3:1) sporangia and apical chlamydospores. All isolates were A2 mating type. DNA was extracted from mycelium and amplified by PCR using the ITS 4/ITS 6 primers (1). Blast search of the rDNA-ITS sequence of isolate IMI 397618 (GenBank Accession No. GQ388261) of the first species showed 100% identity with the ITS sequence of an isolate of P. cinnamomi var. parvispora (EU748548). The sequences (GQ463703 and GQ463704) of isolates IMI 397471 and IMI 397472 of the second species showed 99% similarity with the sequences of a P. citrophthora isolate (EU0000631). The sequence of isolate IMI 397473 (GQ463702) of the third species showed 99% similarity with the sequence of a P. cryptogea isolate (AY659443.1), while the sequence of isolate IMI 397474 (GU723474) of the fourth species showed 99% similarity with the sequence of a P. nicotianae isolate (EU331089). The pathogenicity of individual isolates IMI 397618, IMI 397471, IMI 397472, IMI 397473, and IMI 397474 was tested on 3-month-old potted plants (10 plants per isolate) of mandevilla 'Alice du Pont' by applying 10 ml of a suspension (2 × 104 zoospores/ml) to the root crown. Plants were maintained at 25°C and 95 to 100% relative humidity. All inoculated plants wilted after 4 weeks, while noninoculated control plants remained healthy. The four Phytophthora spp. were subsequently reisolated only from symptomatic plants. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. cinnamomi var. parvispora in Italy and on mandevilla worldwide. Abstract
We investigate propagation of a transverse magnetic field through a nonlinear metamaterial slab of subwavelength thickness and with a very small and negative linear dielectric permittivity. We prove that, for a given input intensity, the output intensity is a multivalued function of the field incidence angle so that the transmissivity exhibits angular multistability and a pronounced directional hysteresis behavior. The predicted directional hysteresis is a consequence of the fact that the linear and nonlinear contributions to the overall dielectric response can be comparable so that the electromagnetic matching conditions at the output slab boundary allow more than one field configuration within the slab to be compatible with the transmitted field.

Abstract
We theoretically prove that electromagnetic beams propagating through a nonlinear cubic metamaterial can exhibit a power flow whose direction reverses its sign along the transverse profile. This effect is peculiar of the hitherto unexplored extreme nonlinear regime where the nonlinear response is comparable or even greater than the linear contribution, a condition achievable even at relatively small intensities. We propose a possible metamaterial structure able to support the extreme conditions where the polarization cubic nonlinear contribution does not act as a mere perturbation of the linear part.

Abstract
A general approach for describing (1+1)-D subwavelength optical field whose waist is much smaller than the wavelength is presented. Exploiting the vectorial Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction theory, a suitable expansion in the ratio between the beam waist and the wavelength allows us to prove the a (1+1)D highly nonparaxial field is generally the product of a cylindrical wave carrier and an envelope which is angularly slowly varying. We apply our general approach to the case of highly nonparaxial Hermite-Gaussian beams whose description is fully analytical.

Abstract
We consider the nonlinear dynamics occurring when an optical beam couples to dielectric material polarization in an unbiased photorefractive crystal undergoing a ferroelectric phase transition. The polarization profile produced by the light-induced electric field is evaluated by means of the Landau-Ginzburg approach and is found to manifest new thermodynamical states with their own specific nonlinear optical effects. We show that a temperature T(C), lower than the critical one, exists such that (a) if T>T(C) the optical beam experiences an increasing self-focusing for decreasing temperatures and (b) if T<T(C) the optical beam allows the existence of thermodynamically metastable states associated with an optical ultra-self-focusing effect.

Abstract
In the last 10 years, various species of Banksia (family Proteaceae) endemic to Australia have been introduced into Italy where cultivation as flower plants is expanding. In the spring of 2003, a decline associated with root and basal stem rot of 2- to 3-year-old plants of Banksia speciosa R. Br., B. baxteri R. Br., and B. prionotes Lindl. grown in the ground was observed in a commercial nursery in Liguria (northern Italy). Aboveground symptoms included leaf chlorosis and wilt. Plants collapsed within 1 to 2 weeks after the appearance of leaf symptoms. A Phytophthora species was consistently isolated from roots and basal stem on BNPRAH selective medium (3). On V8 juice agar (V8A), axenic cultures obtained by single hyphal transfers formed stellate to radiate colonies with aerial mycelium; on potato dextrose agar (PDA). the colonies showed stoloniform mycelium. Minimum and maximum growth temperatures on PDA and V8A were between 5 and 10°C and 38 and 40°C, respectively, with the optimum at 30°C on PDA (mean radial growth rate of 10 isolates ranged between 9.3 and 10.2 mm per day) and 25 to 30°C on V8A (14 mm per day). In saline solution and soil extract, all isolates produced catenulate hyphal swellings and ellipsoid, nonpapillate, persistent sporangia. Sporangia in saline solution varied from 47 to 70 × 30 to 44 μm (mean l/b ratio of 1.5). All isolates were A1 mating type and produced oogonia with amphyginous antheridia when paired with A2 mating type of P. drechsleri Tucker on V8A plus β-sytosterol (3). The electrophoretic patterns of total mycelial proteins and two isozymes (esterase and malate dehydrogenase) (2) of all isolates from Banksia plants were identical, but distinct from the patterns of isolates of other Phytophthora species, including P. drechsleri, P. megasperma sensu stricto, and P. sojae. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of rDNA were amplified with primers ITS4/ITS6 and sequences of two isolates, IMI 393960 from B. speciosa and 466/03 from B. baxteri (GenBank Nos. FJ648808 and FJ648809), were 100% identical to sequences of isolates identified as Phytophthora taxon niederhauserii Z. G. Abad and J. A. Abad (GenBank Nos. AY550916, AM942765, and EU244850). Pathogenicity tests were performed on 1-year-old potted plants of B. speciosa with isolates IMI 393960 and 466/03. Twenty plants per each isolate were transplanted into 12-cm-diameter pots containing infested soil prepared by mixing steam-sterilized sandy loam soil with 1% of inoculum produced on autoclaved wheat kernels. Twenty control plants were grown in autoclaved soil mix. Plants were kept in the greenhouse with natural light at 25 ± 2°C and watered to field capacity weekly. All Banksia plants transplanted in infested soil showed symptoms of wilt, leaf chlorosis, and basal stem rot within 2 to 3 weeks. Noninoculated plants remained healthy. P. taxon niederhauserii was reisolated solely from inoculated plants. P. taxon niederhauserii has been reported recently from Banksia spp. in Australia (1), but to our knowledge this is the first report from Italy. Abstract
Bottlebrush (Callistemon citrinus (Curtis.) Skeels., Myrtaceae) and rock rose (Cistus salvifolius L., Cistaceae) are evergreen shrubs native to Australia and the Mediterranean Region, respectively. In the spring of 2003, approximately 2% of a nursery stock of 12-month-old potted plants of C. citrinus and 8% of a nursery stock of 12-month-old potted plants of Cistus salvifolius grown in the same nursery in Sicily, showed symptoms of leaf chlorosis, defoliation, and wilt associated with root and collar rot. A Phytophthora species was consistently isolated from roots and basal stems on BNPRAH selective medium (2). One isolate from rock rose (IMI 391708) and one from bottlebrush (IMI 391712) were characterized. On potato dextrose agar (PDA), the colonies showed stoloniform mycelium and irregular margins; on V8 juice agar (V8A), colonies were stellate to radiate. Minimum and maximum temperatures on PDA were 10 and 35°C, respectively, with the optimum at 30°C. Mean radial growth rate of isolates on this substrate was 9.9 and 11.3 mm/day, respectively. In saline solution (1), both isolates produced catenulate hyphal swellings and ellipsoid, nonpapillate, persistent sporangia with internal proliferations and dimensions of 52 to 70 × 30 to 42 μm and 51 to 85 × 39 to 45 μm. Mean l/b ratio of sporangia for both isolates was 1.8 ± 1. On V8A plus β-sytosterol, both isolates produced amphyginous antheridia and spherical oogonia in dual cultures with an A2 tester of P. drechsleri Tucker. Conversely, they did not produce gametangia with an A1 tester of P. cryptogea Pethybr., indicating they were A1 mating type. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-rDNA sequences of rock rose and bottlebrush isolates showed 100% similarity with those of two reference isolates of P. taxon niederhauserii from GenBank (Accession Nos. FJ648808 and FJ648809). On the basis of the analysis of the DNA, the species isolated from bottlebrush and rock rose were identified as Phytophthora taxon niederhauserii. Pathogenicity tests were carried out on 6-month-old potted plants of C. salvifolius and C. citrinus (10 plants of each plant species for each isolate) transplanted into pots (12 cm in diameter) containing a mixture of 1:1 steam-sterilized, sandy loam soil (vol/vol) with 4% inoculum produced on autoclaved kernel seeds. Plants were maintained at 25 to 28°C and watered to soil saturation once a week. After 2 to 3 weeks, all inoculated plants developed symptoms identical to those observed on plants with natural infections. Ten control plants transplanted into pots containing noninfested soil remained healthy. P. taxon niederhauserii was reisolated solely from inoculated plants. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. taxon niederhauserii on C. citrinus and C. salvifolius in Italy. This Phytophthora taxon has been reported recently on rock rose in Spain (3). We theoretically investigate collision of optical beams traveling in opposite directions through a centrosymmetric photorefractive crystal biased by a spatially periodic voltage. We analytically predict the fusion of counterpropagating solitons in conditions in which the applied voltage is rapidly modulated along the propagation axis, so that self-bending is suppressed by the "restoring symmetry" mechanism. Moreover, when the applied voltage is slowly modulated, we predict that the modified self-bending allows conditions in which the two beams fuse together, forming a curved light-channel splice.

Abstract
We consider optical propagation through a centrosymmetric photorefractive crystal with the externally applied bias voltage modulated along the optical propagation direction. We analytically prove that, if the modulation scale is smaller than the optical diffraction length, the resulting effective nonlinearity has an even parity in the transverse plane for an even-symmetric intensity profile and supports bending-free solitons down to few-micrometer beam widths. Numerical integration of the full photorefractive model for light-matter interaction allows us to confirm the feasibility of these miniaturized solitons and, for longer modulation periods, to investigate the excitation of self-trapped wiggling optical beams.

Abstract
Considering nonlinear optical propagation through photore-fractive crystals in which the bias voltage is periodically modulated along the propagation direction, we are able to identify the conditions in which a beam forms a soliton in a straight line down to micron-sized widths. The effect, which is numerically investigated considering the full (3+1)D spatio-temporal light-matter dynamics, emerges when the period of modulation of the bias is smaller than the beam diffraction length. In conditions in which the two scales are comparable, the soliton follows a characteristic wiggling trajectory, oscillating in response to the oscillating bias. The finding indicates a method to achieve highly miniaturized soliton-based photonic applications that do not require specific off-axis alignment.

We investigate the counterpropagation of paraxial non-diffracting optical beams through a medium hosting a bulk reflection grating in the quasi-Bragg matching condition. The impact of the relative magnitude of the Bragg detuning parameter and the grating depth on the plane wave dispersion relation allows us to identify three distinct regimes where counterpropagation and interaction of nondiffracting beams show qualitatively different features, encompassing longitudinally invariant, periodic or exponential intensity profiles. In one of the identified regimes the dispersion relation is not monotonic and the consequent "longitudinal degeneracy" allows the investigation of new class of nondiffracting beams characterized by a double spectral ring profile.

Abstract
We investigate quasi-Bragg-matched counterpropagating spatial solitons in a reflection grating in the presence of a longitudinally modulated Kerr nonlinearity. The physical interplay of linear reflection and Kerr self-focusing with the modulation in the nonlinearity yields a variety of elaborate self-action mechanisms. We first analytically predict the existence of symmetric soliton pairs supported by a pure Kerr-like effective nonlinearity. We then analytically derive two families of solitons, associated with the linear grating eigenmodes, supported by an effective "incoherent" Kerr-like coupling arising from the exact balance between the modulation in the nonlinearity and the Kerr interaction due to beam interference.

Abstract
Transverse instabilities are shown to accompany counterpropagation of optical beams through reflection gratings in Kerr media. The instability threshold of continuous waves is analytically derived, and it is shown that the presence of the grating broadens and narrows the stability region of plane waves in focusing and defocusing media, respectively. Furthermore, counterpropagating soliton stability is numerically investigated and compared with the transverse modulation instability analysis, revealing an underlying physical link.

Abstract
We investigate (1+1D) spatial optical solitons embedded in a fixed-volume grating in centrosymmetric photorefractive crystals. We numerically identify a two-parameter soliton family and deduce both its existence surface and soliton profiles. For shallow gratings, the soliton Fourier spectrum exhibits three lobes located at the reciprocal lattice points -K, 0, and K. Soliton trapping is a consequence of both the self-induced nonlinear waveguide and the grating reflectivity, which prevents the breakaway of the lateral components. To provide a preliminary evaluation of soliton stability, we also investigate the propagation of slightly perturbed soliton profiles.

Abstract
We analytically predict the existence of both spatial bright and dark counterpropagating solitons in a reflection grating in the presence of the Kerr nonlinearity. The basic trapping mechanism consists of a twofold balance where diffraction is compensated by self-focusing and reflection is altered by the nonlinear-induced interferometric grating. We find that, whenever the spectral soliton profile lies within the grating stop band, bright and dark solitons exist only if the mutual phase of the counterpropagating solitons is pi or 0, respectively.

Abstract
We previously described 3 bioactive oxidation products of 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (PAPC) containing oxovaleroyl (POVPC), glutaroyl (PGPC), and epoxyisoprostane (PEIPC) groups at the sn-2 position that were increased in minimally modified/oxidized low density lipoprotein (MM-LDL) and rabbit atherosclerotic lesions. We demonstrated specific and contrasting effects of POVPC and PGPC on leukocyte-endothelial interactions and described an effect of PEIPC on monocyte binding. The major purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of structural changes on the bioactivities of these 3 lipids. We demonstrate herein that the group at the sn-2 position determines the specific bioactivity and that the substitution of stearoyl for palmitoyl at the sn-1 position or ethanolamine for choline at the sn-3 position of the phospholipid did not alter bioactivity. Oxidized PAPC, oxidized 1-stearoyl-2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine, and oxidized 1-stearoyl-2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylethanolamine stimulated monocyte binding and inhibited lipopolysaccharide-induced expression of the neutrophil-binding molecule E-selectin. Furthermore, all oxovaleroyl phospholipids but not the glutaroyl phospholipids induced monocyte binding without an increase in vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) expression and inhibited lipopolysaccharide-induced E-selectin expression. In contrast, glutaroyl phospholipids but not oxovaleroyl phospholipids stimulated E-selectin and VCAM-1 expression. We further demonstrate that all parts of the phospholipid molecules are required for these bioactivities. Hydrolysis with phospholipase (PL) A(1), PLA(2), and PLC strongly reduced the bioactivities of POVPC, PGPC, and mixed isomers of PEIPC. PLD had a smaller but still significant effect. The effects of POVPC and PEIPC could be abolished by sodium borohydride treatment, indicating the importance of the reducible groups (carbonyl and epoxide) in these molecules. In summary, these studies identify 6 new bioactive, oxidized phospholipids that are increased in MM-LDL and, where measured, in atherosclerotic lesions. They thus suggest that a family of phospholipid oxidation products containing oxovaleroyl, glutaroyl, and epoxyisoprostane at the sn-2 position play an important role in the regulation of leukocyte-endothelial interactions, bioactivity being in part controlled by several types of phospholipid hydrolases.

Abstract
We previously have demonstrated that oxidized 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (OxPAPC), a component of minimally modified low density lipoprotein (MM-LDL), activates endothelial cells to bind monocytes. 1-Palmitoyl-2- (5-oxovaleroyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (POVPC) and 1- palmitoyl-2-glutaroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (PGPC), which are present in OxPAPC, MM-LDL, and atherosclerotic lesions, were shown to have a major role in the activation of endothelial cells. We now demonstrate that these two highly similar molecules have dramatically different effects on leukocyte endothelial interactions. POVPC is a potent regulator of monocyte-specific endothelial interactions. Treatment of endothelial cells with POVPC increased monocyte binding by inducing the surface expression of the connecting segment 1 domain of fibronectin; no increase in neutrophil binding was observed. In addition, POVPC strongly inhibited lipopolysaccharide-mediated induction of neutrophil binding and expression of E-selectin protein and mRNA. This inhibition was mediated by a protein kinase A-dependent pathway, resulting in down-regulation of NF-kappaB-dependent transcription. In contrast, PGPC induced both monocyte and neutrophil binding and expression of E-selectin and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1. We present evidence to suggest that the two phospholipids act by different novel receptors present in Xenopus laevis oocytes and that POVPC, but not PGPC, stimulates a cAMP-mediated pathway. At concentrations equal to that present in MM-LDL, the effect of POVPC dominates and inhibits PGPC-induced neutrophil binding and E-selectin expression in endothelial cells. In summary, our data provide evidence that both POVPC and PGPC are important regulators of leukocyte-endothelial interactions and that POVPC may play a dominant role in a number of chronic inflammatory processes where oxidized phospholipids are known to be present.

Abstract
Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is produced by a variety of activated cell types and acts as an intercellular mediator of processes associated with inflammation and repair including platelets aggregation, and smooth muscle and fibroblast proliferation. However no previous studies have examined the effects of LPA on endothelial cell leukocyte interactions. We have examined the ability of LPA to activate human aortic endothelial cells (HAEC) to bind monocytes, neutrophils, and HL60 cells (a neutrophil surrogate). Treatment of HAEC for 4 hours with 10 microM LPA caused an increase in the binding of monocytes, neutrophils, and HL60. LPA but not phosphatidic acid dose-dependently increased E-selectin and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) cell surface expression. We performed several studies to characterize the receptor mediating the LPA effect. We demonstrate that at least five potential LPA receptors are expressed by HAEC: Edg-1, -3, -4, and -5 as well as PSP24. Cyclic phosphate-containing phosphatidic acid analogue, an agonist for the type 3 low affinity LPA receptor, was not effective in activating HAEC to bind leukocytes, excluding a role for this receptor. The selective receptor antagonists N-palmitoyl-serine and N-palmitoyl-tyrosine (which inhibits PSP24) completely inhibited LPA-induced VCAM expression; however these antagonists inhibited E-selectin expression by only 30%, suggesting a role for at least one additional LPA receptor mediating E-selectin expression. We propose that Edg-1 might be the second receptor, because this receptor, when expressed in HEK293 cells, similarly to the PSP24 receptor, caused ERK activation to nanomolar concentration of LPA. Exposure of HAEC to sphingosine-1-phosphate, another Edg-1 receptor agonist, increased surface expression of E-selectin and to a much smaller extent VCAM-1. The effects of both LPA and sphingosine-1-phosphate on the induction of both VCAM-1 and E-selectin expression was abolished by pretreatment with pertussis toxin suggesting that both LPA receptors in HAEC couple to a Gi pathway. These findings reveal an important and novel role for LPA and its receptors in inflammatory processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Management of patients with breast cancers < or = 1 cm remains controversial. Reports of infrequent nodal metastases in tumors < or = 5 mm has led to suggestions that axillary dissection should be selective, and that tumor characteristics should guide adjuvant therapy. METHODS A retrospective review of 290 patients with breast cancer 1 cm in size or smaller from 1989 to 1991 was done. Distant disease-free survival (DDFS) was the primary outcome measure. RESULTS There were 95 T1a (< or = 5 mm) and 196 T1b (6-10 mm) cancers. Nodal metastases were found in 8 T1a and 26 T1b tumors. Larger size, poorer differentiation, and lymphovascular invasion (LVI) were associated with more nodal metastases, but none of these trends reached statistical significance. The 6-year DDFS was 93% for node-negative and 87% for node-positive patients (P = .02). Overall, breast cancers with poorer differentiation and LVI trended toward a poorer outcome. For patients with node-negative tumors, LVI was associated with a poorer outcome (P = .03). The size of the primary tumor was not predictive of outcome. There were no nodal metastases or recurrences in the 18 patients with microinvasive breast cancer. CONCLUSIONS Lymph node status is the major determinant of outcome in breast cancers 1 cm in size or smaller. Accurate axillary assessment remains crucial in management of small breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: In recent years there has been ain increase in the use of class III antiarrhythmic drugs such as sotalol, amiodarone, and the so-called pure class III compound for the control of cardiac arrhythmias. It appears there has been a corresponding increase in the frequency of torsades de pointes (TdP). METHODS AND RESULTS: The case reported here, a patient on daily renal dialysis for end-stage renal disease, has important implications for class III agents, which are excreted largely by the kidneys. A relatively low dose of sotalol administered for the prevention of recurrences of atrial fabrillation, with a fast ventricular response producing angina, led to modest increases in the QT interval and moderate bradycardia. This culminated in the development of TdP, which deteriorated into ventricular fibrillation, from which the patient could be resuscitated with considerable difficulty. Dialysis after the occurrence of TdP led to further and striking prolongation of the QT interval associated with numerous episodes of TdP for several days before control was achieved. The atrial fibrillation and recurrences of TdP were eventually controlled with oral amiodarone. CONCLUSIONS: This case emphasizes that in the absence of significant renal function, use of sotalol may not be safe because drug accumulation may not be controlled adequately with renal dialysis. In view of this, in patients with end-stage renal disease, the use of sotalol for arrhythmia control appears contraindicated and alternative agents, the excretion of which does not occur by the renal route, should be used.

Abstract
The aim of the investigation was to establish the prevalence of psychosocial problems in men with haemophilia and HIV infection, and to identify factors associated with psychological morbidity. A cross-sectional controlled study including 37 HIV seropositive and 36 HIV seronegative men with haemophilia under the care of the Oxford Haemophilia Centre were included in the investigation. The outcome measures included current psychological status (PSE, POMS, Beck Hopelessness Scale and Self-Esteem) and psychiatric history; coping and health beliefs (Self-Control Schedule, Hardiness Scale, Health Locus of Control Scale); social functioning (Modified Social Adjustment Scale); and sexual functioning. The results showed that seropositive individuals, whether symptomatic or not, had significantly worse total PSE scores and had higher levels of hopelessness. In addition, symptomatics had worse depression scores (POMS) than seronegatives. However, levels of psychiatric morbidity were generally low, even in the seropositive group. High levels of psychological morbidity were associated with high levels of hopelessness, unfavourable social adjustment, past psychiatric history and symptomatic HIV disease. Seropositives reported greater negative impact on their sex lives, and sexually active seropositives reported a significantly greater prevalence of sexual dysfunction than seronegatives. The majority of seropositives reported regular condom use during intercourse, and also continuing concerns about infecting their sexual partners in spite of it. In summary, it was found that men with haemophilia an HIV infection have higher levels of psychological distress and sexual problems than seronegatives. The skilled staff involved in their treatment are in a good position to identify their difficulties and ensure that good care is provided.

Abstract
The study was concerned with determining the prevalence of psychosocial problems in partners of men with haemophilia and HIV infection, and with identifying factors associated with psychological morbidity. Partners of 17 HIV positive and partners of 19 HIV negative men with haemophilia were assessed in a cross-sectional controlled investigation. Outcome measures included current psychological status and psychiatric history; coping and health beliefs; and social and sexual functioning. Partners of HIV positive men with haemophilia, the majority of whom were asymptomatic, were not found to suffer more psychological difficulties than the partners of HIV negative men with haemophilia. However, partners of haemophiliacs regardless of HIV status suffer from higher levels of psychological distress than comparable women in the community, and those with past psychiatric history and current social difficulties are particularly at risk. The sexual relationships of couples with HIV positive men were more adversely affected than those of HIV negative couples.

Abstract
Blood clotting factor IX is synthesized as a precursor polypeptide that would be expected to be proteolytically cleaved in at least two positions during maturation to remove the prepeptide and propeptide regions. We show that a point mutation causing hemophilia B changes the amino acid at position -4 in the propeptide region of factor IX from an arginine to a glutamine, which results in the expression of a stable longer protein with 18 additional amino acids of the N-terminal propeptide region still attached. This suggests that in the normal maturation of factor IX the signal peptidase cleaves the peptide bond between amino acid residues -18 and -19, generating an unstable profactor IX intermediate. Further proteolytic processing to the mature factor IX depends on the arginine residue at -4. The significance of the homologous arginine residue in other processed proteins is discussed.

Abstract
74 insulin-dependent diabetic patients with background retinopathy were randomised to continue with usual diabetic care (group U) or to a more intensive programme (group A) using ultralente insulin as basal cover and soluble insulin at mealtimes. Group A attended the clinic more frequently, received closer dietary supervision, and were taught home blood glucose monitoring. Group A had a significantly lower mean glycosylated haemoglobin level during the study, although the mean level also fell in group U towards the end of year 2. Renal and sensory-nerve function were significantly better preserved in group A than in group U. Significant improvements were also seen in low-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol and whole-blood low-shear viscosity. The rate of progression of retinopathy was similar in both groups. It appears that a modest improvement in diabetic control, obtainable in most clinics, has been associated with a reduction in the progression of diabetic tissue damage.
