Abstract
The acid-hydrolyzed acorn starch samples (HAS-1, HAS-2, HAS-3, and HAS-4) were prepared from natural acorn starch (NAS) at sulfuric acid concentrations of 1, 2, 3, and 4 mol/L for 2 d. The particle characteristics and structures of HAS were investigated, and Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) based on HAS were constructed and characterized. The results showed that with an increase in sulfuric acid concentration, the size, yield, amylose content, molecular weight, and amylopectin chain length of HAS gradually decreased. HAS retained an A-type crystal structure, and its relative crystallinity and short-range order degree gradually increased with increasing sulfuric acid concentration. Acid hydrolysis treatment improved the wettability of NAS, and its effect was positively correlated with the sulfuric acid concentration. HAS-3 and HAS-4 could stabilize the Pickering HIPEs with an oil phase volume fraction of 80% at c ≥ 1.5%. The mechanical properties of the HIPEs were positively correlated with c.

A picture of pharmaceutical pollution in landfill leachates: Occurrence, regional differences and influencing factors. WASTE MANAGEMENT (NEW YORK, N.Y.) 2024; 184:20-27. [PMID: 38788499 DOI: 10.1016/j.wasman.2024.05.019] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/29/2023] [Revised: 05/05/2024] [Accepted: 05/14/2024] [Indexed: 05/26/2024]
Abstract
Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill sites have been identified as a significant source of pharmaceuticals in the environment because unused or expired pharmaceuticals are discarded into MSW, which eventually percolate into leachates. However, the contamination of pharmaceuticals in landfill leachate in China is not comprehensively understood. Previous research into factors influencing pharmaceutical concentrations focused on a limited number and type of target pollutants or restricted study area. In the present study, 66 pharmaceuticals were analyzed (including 45 antibiotic and 21 non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals, also categorized as 59 prescription and 7 non-prescription pharmaceuticals) in leachate samples from landfill sites with various characteristics in different regions of China. The results indicated that non-antibiotic pollutants were present at significantly higher concentrations than antibiotic pollutants, with median concentrations of 1.74 μg/L and 527 ng/L, respectively. Non-antibiotic pollutants also presented a higher environmental risk than antibiotic pollutants, by 2 to 4 orders of magnitude, highlighting that non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals should not be overlooked during the assessment of landfill leachate. Pharmaceutical concentrations in landfill leachate samples exhibited regional differences; the population size served by the landfills was the dominant factor contributing to the observed differences. In addition, landfill characteristics such as the solid waste composition and MSW loading can also affect pharmaceutical concentrations in landfill leachate. Despite the implementation of the classification and disposal policy of MSW in Shanghai, China since July 2019, specifying that unused or expired pharmaceuticals should be discarded as hazardous waste, high levels of pharmaceutical contaminations were detected in leachate from the main components of classified MSW (i.e., residual and food waste). These findings emphasize the importance of pharmaceutical management in solid waste systems.

The Effect of Acid Hydrolysis on the Pickering Emulsifying Capacity of Tartary Buckwheat Flour. Foods 2024; 13:1543. [PMID: 38790843 PMCID: PMC11121274 DOI: 10.3390/foods13101543] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/17/2024] [Revised: 05/07/2024] [Accepted: 05/13/2024] [Indexed: 05/26/2024] Open
Abstract
The effect of sulfuric acid hydrolysis on the Pickering emulsifying capacity of Tartary buckwheat flour (TBF) rich in starch was evaluated for the first time. The results indicate that the sulfuric acid concentration and hydrolysis time had a significant impact on the Pickering emulsifying capacity of acid-hydrolyzed Tartary buckwheat flour (HTBF). A low sulfuric acid concentration (1-2 mol/L) could reduce the particle size of HTBF, but it also decreased the Pickering emulsifying ability. At a sulfuric acid concentration of 3 mol/L, appropriate treatment time (2 and 3 days) led to particle aggregation but significantly improved wettability, thereby resulting in a rapid enhancement in emulsifying capacity. Under these conditions, the obtained HTBF (HTBF-D2-C3 and HTBF-D3-C3) could stabilize medium-chain triglyceride (MCT)-based Pickering high-internal-phase emulsions (HIPEs) with an oil-phase volume fraction of 80% at the addition amounts (c) of ≥1.0% and ≥1.5%, respectively. Its performance was significantly superior to that of TBF (c ≥ 2.0%). Furthermore, at the same addition amount, the droplet size of HIPEs constructed by HTBF-D3-C3 was smaller than that of HTBF-D2-C3, and its gel strength and microrheological performance were also superior to those of HTBF-D2-C3, which was attributed to the higher wettability of HTBF-D3-C3. The findings of this study can facilitate the in-depth application of Tartary buckwheat and provide references for the development of novel Pickering emulsifiers.

Abstract
Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are widely used insecticides and have been detected in aquatic environments globally. However, little is known about NEOs contamination in the coastal environments under the terrestrial pressure of multiple planting types simultaneously. This study investigated the occurrence, spatial-seasonal variability, and ecological risks of NEOs along the coast of the Shandong Peninsula during the dry and wet seasons, where located many largest fruit, vegetable, and grain production bases in China. The concentrations of ∑NEOs in seawater were higher in wet seasons (surface: 195.46 ng/L; bottom: 14.56 ng/L) than in dry seasons (surface: 10.07 ng/L; bottom: 8.45 ng/L). During the wet seasons, NEOs peaked in the northern and eastern areas of the Shandong Peninsula, where the inland fruit planting area is located. While dry seasons had higher concentrations in Laizhou Bay, influenced by rivers from vegetable-growing areas. Grain crops, fruit, and cotton planting were major NEOs sources during wet seasons, while wheat and vegetables dominated in dry seasons. Moderate or above ecological risks appeared at 53.8% of the monitoring sites. Generally, NEOs caused high risks in the wet seasons mainly caused by Imidacloprid, and medium risk in the dry seasons caused by Clothianidin, which should be prevented and controlled in advance.

Prediction of HC 5s for phthalate esters by use of the QSAR-ICE model and ecological risk assessment in Chinese surface waters. JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2024; 467:133642. [PMID: 38330644 DOI: 10.1016/j.jhazmat.2024.133642] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/30/2023] [Revised: 01/01/2024] [Accepted: 01/25/2024] [Indexed: 02/10/2024]
Abstract
Due to their endocrine-disrupting effects and the risks posed in surface waters, in particular by chronic low-dose exposure to aquatic organisms, phthalate esters (PAEs) have received significant attention. However, most assessments of risks posed by PAEs were performed at a selection level, and thus limited by empirical data on toxic effects and potencies. A quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) and interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) model was constructed to estimate hazardous concentrations (HCs) of selected PAEs to aquatic organisms, then they were used to conduct a multiple-level environmental risk assessment for PAEs in surface waters of China. Values of hazardous concentration for 5% of species (HC5s), based on acute lethality, estimated by use of the QSAR-ICE model were within 1.25-fold of HC5 values derived from empirical data on toxic potency, indicating that the QSAR-ICE model predicts the toxicity of these three PAEs with sufficient accuracy. The five selected PAEs may be commonly measured in China surface waters at concentrations between ng/L and μg/L. Risk quotients according to median concentrations of the five PAEs ranged from 3.24 for di(2-ethylhexhyl) phthalate (DEHP) to 4.10 × 10-3 for dimethyl phthalate (DMP). DEHP and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) had risks to the most vulnerable aquatic biota, with the frequency of exceedances of the predicted no-effect concentration (PNECs) of 75.5% and 38.0%, respectively. DEHP and DBP were identified as having "high" or "moderate" risks. Results of the joint probability curves (JPC) method indicated DEHP posed "intermediate" risk to freshwater species with a maximum risk product of 5.98%. The multiple level system introduced in this study can be used to prioritize chemicals and other new pollutant in the aquatic ecological.

ESMO Open 2024; 9:102961. [PMID: 38640748 PMCID: PMC11047177 DOI: 10.1016/j.esmoop.2024.102961] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/24/2023] [Revised: 02/17/2024] [Accepted: 02/19/2024] [Indexed: 04/21/2024] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND Protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) methylates multiple substrates dysregulated in cancer, including spliceosome machinery components. PF-06939999 is a selective small-molecule PRMT5 inhibitor. PATIENTS AND METHODS This phase I dose-escalation and -expansion trial (NCT03854227) enrolled patients with selected solid tumors. PF-06939999 was administered orally once or twice a day (q.d./b.i.d.) in 28-day cycles. The objectives were to evaluate PF-06939999 safety and tolerability to identify maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and recommended part 2 dose (RP2D), and assess pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics [changes in plasma symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) levels], and antitumor activities. RESULTS In part 1 dose escalation, 28 patients received PF-06939999 (0.5 mg q.d. to 6 mg b.i.d.). Four of 24 (17%) patients reported dose-limiting toxicities: thrombocytopenia (n = 2, 6 mg b.i.d.), anemia (n = 1, 8 mg q.d.), and neutropenia (n = 1, 6 mg q.d.). PF-06939999 exposure increased with dose. Steady-state PK was achieved by day 15. Plasma SDMA was reduced at steady state (58%-88%). Modulation of plasma SDMA was dose dependent. No MTD was determined. In part 2 dose expansion, 26 patients received PF-06939999 6 mg q.d. (RP2D). Overall (part 1 + part 2), the most common grade ≥3 treatment-related adverse events included anemia (28%), thrombocytopenia/platelet count decreased (22%), fatigue (6%), and neutropenia (4%). Three patients (6.8%) had confirmed partial response (head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, n = 1; non-small-cell lung cancer, n = 2), and 19 (43.2%) had stable disease. No predictive biomarkers were identified. CONCLUSIONS PF-06939999 demonstrated a tolerable safety profile and objective clinical responses in a subset of patients, suggesting that PRMT5 is an interesting cancer target with clinical validation. However, no predictive biomarker was identified. The role of PRMT5 in cancer biology is complex and requires further preclinical, mechanistic investigation to identify predictive biomarkers for patient selection.

Abstract
Atomic thick 2D materials hold great potential as building blocks to construct highly permeable membranes, yet the permeability of laminar 2D material membranes is still limited by their irregularity sheep track-like interlayer channels. Herein, a supramolecular-mediated strategy to induce the regular assembly of high-throughput 2D nanofluidic channels based on host-guest interactions is proposed. Inspired by the characteristics of motorways, supramolecular-mediated ultrathin 2D membranes with broad and continuous regular water transport channels are successfully constructed using graphene oxide (GO) as an example. The prepared membrane achieves an ultrahigh water permeability (369.94 LMH bar-1 ) more than six times higher than that of the original membranes while maintaining dye rejection above 98.5%, which outperforms the reported 2D membranes. Characterization and simulation results show that the introduction of hyaluronate-grafted β-cyclodextrin not only expands the interlayer channels of GO membranes but also enables the membranes to operate stably under harsh conditions with the help of host-guest interactions. This universal supramolecular assembly strategy provides new opportunities for the preparation of 2D membranes with high separation performance and reliable and stable nanofluidic channels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study utilized ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence program based on large language models, to explore controversial issues in pediatric inguinal hernia surgery and compare its responses with the guidelines of the European Association of Pediatric Surgeons (EUPSA). METHODS Six contentious issues raised by EUPSA were submitted to ChatGPT 4.0 for analysis, for which two independent responses were generated for each issue. These generated answers were subsequently compared with systematic reviews and guidelines. To ensure content accuracy and reliability, a content analysis was conducted, and expert evaluations were solicited for validation. Content analysis evaluated the consistency or discrepancy between ChatGPT 4.0's responses and the guidelines. An expert scoring method assess the quality, reliability, and applicability of responses. The TF-IDF model tested the stability and consistency of the two responses. RESULTS The responses generated by ChatGPT 4.0 were mostly consistent with the guidelines. However, some differences and contradictions were noted. The average quality score was 3.33, reliability score was 2.75, and applicability score was 3.46 (out of 5). The average similarity between the two responses was 0.72 (out of 1), Content analysis and expert ratings yielded consistent conclusions, enhancing the credibility of our research. CONCLUSION ChatGPT can provide valuable responses to clinical questions, but it has limitations and requires further improvement. It is recommended to combine ChatGPT with other reliable data sources to improve clinical practice and decision-making.

Distribution characteristics, source attribution, and health risk assessment of organophosphate esters in indoor and outdoor dust from various microenvironments in Beijing. ECOTOXICOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY 2023; 268:115713. Abstract
The occurrence and profiles of organophosphate esters (OPEs) were studied in indoor and outdoor dusts from various microenvironments, including forty-seven outdoor dusts from green belts, roads, parks and residence areas, seventy-seven indoor dusts from private cars, print shops, taxis, furniture shops, offices, dormitories, shopping malls and residences house in different districts in Beijing. The total concentrations (Σ12OPEs) were eighteen times higher in indoor dusts (7.14 ×102 to 2.24 ×104 ng/g) than in outdoor dusts (36.0-1.56 ×103 ng/g). OPEs concentrations in samples from taxi and private cars were obviously higher than other indoor microenvironments. Both indoor and outdoor microenvironments also showed different compositional profiles of OPEs, indicating that polyurethane foam/building materials and hydraulic fluids/plastics were the greatest contributions in different microenvironments, with chlorinated alkyl phosphates (Cl-OPEs) being the predominant compound in both indoor dust (52.1-86.5%) and outdoor dust samples (42.6-81.3%). The uncertainty was reduced by Monte Carlo simulation, and the pollution levels of 50th and 95th percentiles were employed to calculate the average daily dosage, which was then used to calculate hazard quotient (HQ) for assessing the health risks to adults and children. Results showed that OPEs were safe even at extremely consumed concentration percentile (95th) in all groups.

Abstract
Prior research suggests COVID-19 has amplified stress on Academic Clinician Frontline-Workers (ACFW). The aim of this paper is: (1) to better understand the experiences of ACFW during the COVID-19 pandemic including their mental-emotional wellbeing, academic productivity, clinical experiences, and (2) to examine any gender differences. A cross-sectional survey was administered to University of Minnesota/M Health Fairview systems' faculty February-June 2021. Of the 291 respondents, 156 were clinicians, with 91 (58 %) identifying as Frontline-Workers (ACFW). Faculty wellbeing was assessed using validated measures in addition to measures of productivity and sociodemographics. For example, ACFW reported a higher Work-Family Conflict (WFC) scores compared to non-ACFW (26.5 vs. 24.1, p = 0.057) but did not report higher Family-Work Conflict (FWC) scores (17.7 vs. 16.3, p = 0.302). Gender sub-analyses, revealed that women ACFW compared to men ACFW reported higher WFC scores (27.7 vs. 24.1, p = 0.021) and FWC (19.3 vs. 14.3, p = 0.004). Academically, ACFW reported submitting fewer grants and anticipated delays in promotion and tenure due to the COVID-19 (p = 0.035). Results suggest COVID-19 has exacerbated ACFW stress and gender inequities. Reports of anticipated delay in promotion for ACFW may pose a challenge for the long-term academic success of ACFW, especially women ACFW. In addition, women may experience higher FWC and WFC as compared to men. Schools of academic medicine should consider re-evaluating promotion/tenure processes and creating resources to support women ACFW as well as ACFW caregivers.

Micropollutants but high risks: Human multiple stressors increase risks of freshwater ecosystems at the megacity-scale. JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2023; 460:132497. Abstract
Micropollutants in water environments have attracted widespread attention, but how human and natural stressors influence the risks of micropollutants has not been comprehensively revealed. A megacity-scale study of the ecological risks of micropollutants in the surface water of Beijing, China is presented to illustrate the magnitudes of the influences of multiple anthropogenic and natural stressors. A total of 133 micropollutants representing typical land use patterns in Beijing, were quantified with the mean concentration range of ND (not detected) to 272 ng·L-1. The micropollutant concentrations in the south were obviously higher than those detected in the northern areas, and neonicotinoid pesticides showed the highest mean concentration of 311 ng·L-1. The chronic and acute risks of micropollutants to algae, invertebrates, and fishes were determined, and herbicides, organophosphorus esters, and insecticides account for the primary risks to algae, invertebrates, and fishes, respectively. The cropland and impervious cover cause the differences in the pollution and risks of micropollutants. The land use in riparian zones greater than 2 km shows a great influence on the chronic chemical risks (CCRs) for the three groups of species, indicating that too local scale does not explain the local pollution status. Climate conditions and human land use are important drivers explaining the CCRs to which various trophic levels of species are exposed. Results demonstrate that multiple categories of micropollutants pose adverse risks to freshwater in the megacity of Beijing, while climate conditions, pollution discharge, and human land use induce the chemical risk of micropollutants to aquatic organisms, and the land use in different riparian zones show different effects on the risks.

Identification and Automated Delineation of Radioresistant Biological Tumor Volume in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging Radiomics. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2023; 117:e598-e599. Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) Widespread use of intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) has improved the tumor control rate of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, nearly 20% of the patients with local-advanced NPC would relapse after precise irradiation and 80% of the recurrent lesions occur within the high dose field, suggesting that there are radiation-resistant cancer cell subsets within the tumor. In this context, identification and contouring of radiation resistance region of NPC for dose escalation at primary IMRT could be advantageous. In this work, we proposed a two-step radiomics workflow to predict local relapse and the recurrent region of NPC before primary IMRT. MATERIALS/METHODS In this single-center, retrospective study, pre-treatment magnetic resonance (MR) sequences of T1-weighted imaging (T1-w) and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging (CET1-w) were collected from 800 patients of newly diagnosed and non-metastatic NPC between April 2009 and December 2015. The primary gross tumor volume (GTVp) of all patients and the actual recurrent lesion (GTVr) of patients who suffered from local recurrence were manually contoured for further analysis. A two-step complete radiomics workflow was designed to predict tumor recurrence and segment the region. First, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) was utilized for radiomics features selection of GTVp and support vector machine (SVM) was adopted to predict the recurrence. If the model predicts a recurrence, then the workflow utilizes an improved 3D U-Net to segment the recurrent region. Area under receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC-AUC) was used to evaluate the performance of tumor recurrence prediction, and Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) was used to assess the consistence between the actual and predicted GTVr. RESULTS Of 800 NPC patients, 95 (11.9%) patients developed in-field local recurrence. For recurrence risk prediction, the SVM ensemble model (T1-w+CET1-w) was selected for further application with higher sensitivity. The average ROC-AUC, specificity, sensitivity of the SVM ensemble model in a 5-fold cross-validation and in the independent test set of 160 patients were 0.922, 0.922, 0.777 and 0.928, 0.915, 0.737, respectively. Moreover, for recurrent region segmentation, the multi-modality (T1-w+CET1-w) model was superior to the single-modality (T1-w or CET1-w) model. In an independent test set of 15 patients, the DSC, sensitivity and 95% Hausdorff Distance between actual and predicted GTVr was 0.549±0.176, 0.696±0.118 and 9.813±4.788 which was superior to 0.444±0.188, 0.497±0.218 and 12.047±5.361 of original 3D U-Net. CONCLUSION The proposed two-step radiomics workflow showed a good performance in predicting tumor recurrence of NPC. The predicted location of the recurrence lesion was all accurate, but there was still a certain difference between the volume of the automated delineated and actual GTVr, which needed to be further optimized to be used as biological tumor volume.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) Application of artificial intelligence (AI) for automated contouring of tumor volumes and organs at risk (OARs) for radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) leads to improved contouring accuracy and efficiency. However, few studies have involved the automated contouring of gross tumor volume of cervical lymph nodes (GTVn) and clinical target volumes (CTVs). In this work, we proposed an AI automated contouring tool for GTVn and CTVs for radiotherapy of NPC on the plain scans of planning compute tomography (CT). MATERIALS/METHODS In this retrospective study, plain scan datasets of planning CT covering the nasopharynx and neck from 139 patients with NPC between March 2022 and December 2022 were collected and divided into training, validation, and testing cohorts of 95, 24, and 20 patients, respectively. Ground truth contours of primary gross tumor volume (GTVp), GTVn (divided into GTVn_L in left neck and GTVn_R in right neck), CTVs (including high risk CTV1 contains GTVp and low risk CTV2 contains GTVp and cervical nodal levels) and OARs were delineated and were defined by consensus of two experts. We first proposed a three-dimensional (3D) U-net using GTVp and OARs as experience constrains to guide the automated delineation of GTVn and CTVs. The average Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and average surface distance (ASD) were used to quantify the performance of the AI tool. Next, five prospective patients were enrolled for clinical evaluation of our AI tool. DSC between automated contours and radiation oncologist-revised contours and time consuming of the revision were record. RESULTS Clinical characteristics of 139 retrospective and 5 prospective patients are list in Table 1. In the independent testing set of 20 patients, our AI tool showed high performance in GTVn and CTVs contouring when compared with the ground truth contours. The mean DSC were 0.73 ± 0.07, 0.74 ± 0.05, 0.93 ± 0.03, and 0.88 ± 0.03, and the mean ASD were 1.01 ± 0.43 mm, 1.14 ± 0.61 mm, 0.51 ± 0.13 mm, 1.17 ± 0.43 mm for GTVn_L, GTVn_R, CTV1 and CTV2, respectively. In the five prospective patients, mean DSC were 0.74 ± 0.07, 0.74 ± 0.10, 0.95 ± 0.01 and 0.89 ± 0.04, respectively. The median time consuming for GTVn and CTVs revision was 2minutes and 10 seconds (range, 1 minutes to 3 minutes). CONCLUSION The proposed AI tool integrating clinical experience as constrains showed high accuracy for contouring GTVn and CTVs of NPC. With the assistance of AI contours, contouring efficiency could be probably increased, which is promising in online adaptive radiotherapy of NPC.

[PMID: 37573241 DOI: 10.1016/j.crad.2023.07.006] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/18/2023] [Revised: 07/06/2023] [Accepted: 07/11/2023] [Indexed: 08/14/2023]
Abstract
AIM To evaluate the difference in computed tomography (CT) attenuation value of different planes of the 7th thoracic vertebra and investigate the efficacy of axial and sagittal vertebral CT measurements in predicting osteoporosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients who underwent routine chest CT and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) within 1 month were included in this retrospective study. The CT attenuation values of different planes were compared. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) were used to analyse the difference of each plane in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. RESULTS The study included 1,338 patients (mean age of 61.9±11.9; 54% female). The CT attenuation values decreased successively in the normal group, osteopenia group, and osteoporosis group. The paired t-test results showed that the mid-axial measurements were greater than mid-sagittal measurements, with a mean difference of 9 HU, the difference was statistically significant (p<0.001, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 7.8-10.1). For each one-unit reduction in mid-sagittal CT attenuation value, the risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis increased by 3.6%. To distinguish osteoporosis from non-osteoporosis (osteopenia + normal), the sensitivity was 90% and the specificity was 52.4% at the mid-sagittal threshold of 113.7 HU. CONCLUSIONS The CT attenuation values of mid-sagittal plane have higher diagnostic efficacy than axial planes in predicting osteoporosis. For patients with a sagittal CT attenuation value of <113.7 HU in the T7, further DXA examination is warranted.

Mercury intoxication disrupts tonic signaling in B cells, and may promote autoimmunity due to abnormal phosphorylation of STIM-1 and other autoimmunity risk associated phosphoproteins involved in BCR signaling. Toxicol Appl Pharmacol 2023; 474:116607. [PMID: 37348680 PMCID: PMC10534200 DOI: 10.1016/j.taap.2023.116607] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/16/2023] [Revised: 06/09/2023] [Accepted: 06/19/2023] [Indexed: 06/24/2023]
Abstract
Epidemiological studies link exposure to mercury with autoimmune disease. Unfortunately, in spite of considerable effort, no generally accepted mechanistic understanding of how mercury functions with respect to the etiology of autoimmune disease is currently available. Nevertheless, autoimmune disease often arises because of defective B cell signaling. Because B cell signaling is dependent on phosphorylation cascades, in this report, we have focused on how mercury intoxication alters phosphorylation of B cell proteins in antigen-non stimulated (tonic) mouse (BALB/c) splenic B cells. Specifically, we utilized mass spectrometric techniques to conduct a comprehensive unbiased global analysis of the effect of inorganic mercury (Hg2+) on the entire B cell phosphoproteome. We found that the effects were pleotropic in the sense that large numbers of pathways were impacted. However, confirming our earlier work, we found that the B cell signaling pathway stood out from the rest, in that phosphoproteins which had sites which were affected by Hg2+, exhibited a much higher degree of connectivity, than components of other pathways. Further analysis showed that many of these BCR pathway proteins had been previously linked to autoimmune disease. Finally, dose response analysis of these BCR pathway proteins showed STIM1_S575, and NFAT2_S259 are the two most Hg2+ sensitive of these sites. Because STIM1_S575 controls the ability of STIM1 to regulate internal Ca2+, we speculate that STIM1 may be the initial point of disruption, where Hg2+ interferes with B cell signaling leading to systemic autoimmunity, with the molecular effects pleiotropically propagated throughout the cell by virtue of Ca2+ dysregulation.

Abstract
Triadimefon is ubiquitous in various environmental media. Although toxicity of triadimefon to individual of aquatic organisms has been confirmed, its effect on organisms at population level remain poorly understood. In this study the long-term effect of triadimefon on individual and population of Daphnia magna were studied using multi-generational experiments and matrix model. Development and reproduction of three generations of F1 and F2 were significantly inhibited with the triadimefon concentration of 0.1 mg/L (p < 0.01). Toxicity of triadimefon to the offspring was stronger than to the parent (p < 0.05). When triadimefon concentration was higher than 0.1 mg/L, both population number and intrinsic rate of increase showed a decreasing trend with the increasing exposure concentration. Age structure of the population also tended to decline. Toxicity threshold derived on population-level was between mortality-based LC50 and reproduction-based NOEC of Daphnia magna, and also between acute toxicity and chronic toxicity derived from species sensitivity distribution (SSD). The risk of population level derived from risk quotient was low for most areas, and the results derived from probability risk showed that the expected loss of intrinsic rate of increase of population was 0.0039 without considering other factors. Compared to the individual-level, the ecological risks at the population level were closer to the actual situation of the ecosystem response to the chemical pollution.

Abstract
The effects of ultrasonic treatment on the structure and physicochemical properties of pea starch were investigated in this study. The results showed that ultrasonic treatment increased the hydrolysis rate and particle size of pea starch. In the process of treatment, there were some depressions and pores on the surface of pea starch granules. Although the crystallization type of starch was retained, its crystallinity decreased. The pasting temperature of pea starch remained stable after ultrasonic treatment, but its peak viscosity, trough viscosity, cold viscosity, breakdown viscosity and setback viscosity all declined significantly. The transparency of starch paste decreased, but proper ultrasonic treatment could improve the strength of starch gel. The obtained results can provide a reference for the physical modification of pea starch.

Ranking the risks of eighty pharmaceuticals in surface water of a megacity: A multilevel optimization strategy. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2023; 878:163184. [PMID: 37001676 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2023.163184] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/10/2023] [Revised: 03/01/2023] [Accepted: 03/27/2023] [Indexed: 05/13/2023]
Abstract
Pharmaceuticals in freshwater posed ecological risks to aquatic ecosystem, however, most risk assessments of pharmaceuticals were conducted at screening level, which were limited by the availability of the toxicity data. In this study, risks of 80 pharmaceuticals including 35 antibiotics, 13 antiviral drugs, 13 illicit drugs, and 19 antidepressants in surface water of Beijing were assessed with a proposed multilevel environmental risk optimization strategy. Target pharmaceuticals were detected in surface water samples with the detection frequency from 1.7 % to 100 % and the total concentrations from 31.1 ng/L to 2708 ng/L. Antiviral drugs were the dominant pharmaceuticals. Preliminary screening-level risk assessment indicated that 20 pharmaceuticals posed low to high risks with risk quotient from 0.14 (chloroquine diphosphate) to 27.8 (clarithromycin). Thirteen pharmaceuticals were recognized with low to high risks by an optimized risk assessment method. Of them, the refined probabilistic risk assessment of joint probability curves coupling with a quantitative structure activity relationship-interspecies correlation estimation (QSAR-ICE) model was applied. Clarithromycin, erythromycin and ofloxacin were identified to pose low risks with maximum risk products (RP) of 1.23 %, 0.41 % and 0.35 %, respectively, while 10 pharmaceuticals posed de minimis risks. Structural equation modeling disclosed that human land use and climate conditions influenced the risks of pharmaceuticals by indirectly influencing the concentrations of pharmaceuticals. The results indicated that the multilevel strategy coupling with QSAR-ICE model was appropriate and effective for screening priority pollutants, and the strategy can be used to prioritize pharmaceuticals and other emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment.

Abstract
Freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem services might decline due to exposure to chemicals. However, researchers have devoted much attention to the potential risks of emerging contaminants, while placing less effort on historical pollutants, such as the surfactant, linear-alkylbenzene-sulfonate (LAS), which is a major component of widely used synthetic detergents worldwide. In this study, a multilevel risk assessment approach was used to assess risks posed by LAS to aquatic organisms, on a wide spatial scale, based on various assessment endpoints. Additionally, bottom-up approaches were used to assess contributions of LAS source discharges to aquatic environments. Concentrations of LAS in surface waters of China ranged from less than the limit of detection to 14,200 μg/L. The predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) based on adverse effects on reproduction is 15 μg/L, which is slightly less than the PNEC based on other endpoints. 99% of surface waters in Chaohu Lake and the Hai River (Ch: Haihe) were predicted to pose a risk to growth of aquatic organisms, with a protection threshold of 5% of species (HC5). Discharges of LAS were estimated using activity data and emission factors for 280 major cities in the basin. Rural domestic sources were the main source of LAS to surface waters. These outcomes provided a process for developing comprehensive management and control approaches to help researchers and policymakers effectively manage water resources affected by increasing concentrations of LAS.

Abstract
Antimony mining activities can result in serious contamination of soil by heavy metals, which represents a risk to human health. In this study, the contamination and sources of 14 heavy metals, and their risks to both ecosystem and public health from these metals at an antimony mining site in Guizhou Province in China were explored. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Hg, Cu, As, Se, Cd, Sn, Sb and Pb were 3.73, 2.49, 13.99, 38.32, 1.11, 1.61, 305.33, 1.59 times than their local background levels. Sb, Se, As and Hg presented the relatively heavy pollution, wherein Sb (EI = 2137.34 > 320), Hg (EI = 150.26 > 80) and As (EI = 139.92 > 80) also posed the strong ecological risk. The sources identification illustrated Hg, Pb, As, Bi, Cr, Sb, Cd and Zn were attributed to industrial activities, Ni, Co, Au and Cu (p < 0.01) were derived from a combination of a lithogeny origin and anthropogenic source, whereas Se was of natural origin. Health risk assessment demonstrated that Ni, Cr and As presented both the unacceptable noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risk, and Sb (HI = 1.44E+03) and Cd (HI = 2.91E+00) posed unacceptable noncarcinogenic risk to the local resident. Furthermore, children in the 1-6 age group (HI = 7.83E+02) were more sensitive to noncarcinogenic risk, and the 6-18 age group (CRI = 2.39E-02) as more prone to carcinogenic risk. The dermal contact was the predominant exposure pathway of noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks with a contribution rate of over 97% for all age groups. Overall, this research provided the comprehensive information on heavy metals in an antimony mining sites, and the related heavy metals should be paid attention for ensuring soil safety and protecting local people's health.

Abstract
The fenton-like process based on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is considered as a promising strategy for the removal of organic pollutants. However, the development of efficient photocatalysts for PMS activation remains challenging. Herein, copper-iron prussian blue analogue (CunFe1-PBA, n = 1, 2, 3, 4) nanomaterials were first fabricated through a simple combination of co-precipitation and calcination processes. The as-synthesized CunFe1-PBA composite catalyst was used to activate PMS for the degradation of endocrine disruptor bisphenol S (BPS). As the result, Cu3Fe1-PBA calcined at 300 °C (Cu3Fe1-PBA*300 °C) mainly composed of CuFe2O4 and CuO showed a higher catalytic activity for activating PMS for BPS degradation than those of CunFe1-PBA composite. Additionally, Cu3Fe1-PBA*300 °C/PMS system was suitable for degradation of BPS at 400 mg/L catalyst or PMS and wide pH ranges from 3 to 11 while coexisting inorganic anions (SO42-, NO3-, and HCO3-) and humic acid all inhibited the reaction. Radical trapping experiment, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved that Cu and Fe could regulate the charge balance through changes of valence state, and active PMS to produce free radicals effectively, especially the production of 1O2. Furthermore, the analysis of the BPS intermediates of degradation was carried out by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and two degradation pathways of BPS were proposed. In summary, this work provides a facile avenue to design efficient catalysts to activate PMS for the degradation of emerging organic pollutants in water remediation.

Abstract
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is considered a cost-effective alternative approach capable of determining the consumption and prevalence of drug use in communities, however, the application of WBE for estimating the prevalence of depression has seldom been reported. In this study, the prevalence of antidepressants was estimated in five cities in Qinghai Province, west China to examine the feasibility of using WBE to estimate the depression prevalence. Residual concentrations of the drugs varied from different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in five cities. Venlafaxine (0.06-720 ng/L), O-desmethylvenlafaxine (1.31-1659 ng/L), paroxetine (<LOD-69.9 ng/L), sertraline (0.20-3.36 ng/L), and nortriptyline (<LOD-50.8 ng/L) were in the top concentrations quartile in the influent samples of 17 WWTPs. Back-calculation estimated venlafaxine (538 mg/1000 inh/d) as the most consumed antidepressant in Qinghai Province, followed by paroxetine (159 mg/1000 inh/d), sertraline (150 mg/1000 inh/d) and amitriptyline (97.2 mg/1000 inh/d). The prevalence of depression was 17.8 % based on antidepressant usage (2.50 %), which was consistent with the data conducted by traditional survey (16.7 %). Risk assessment showed that fluoxetine, citalopram and venlafaxine in effluents might cause ecological risks to aquatic environment. This study provided a promising way for monitoring antidepressant usage and depression prevalence through WBE, which would improve the understanding of depression disease and provide guidance for public health care.

Abstract
In this work, the granule characteristics, functional properties, in-vitro digestibility, antioxidant capacity, and phenolic composition of acorn starch were investigated and compared to those of potato starch and corn starch, and its Pickering emulsifying ability was also evaluated. The results showed that the acorn starch granules were spherical and oval in shape, with a smaller particle size, and the amylose content and crystallinity degree were similar to those of corn starch. However, the acorn starch was difficult to swell, with poor aqueous solubility, though it had a strong gel strength and setback viscosity. Because acorn starch contained more free and bound polyphenols, its resistant starch content after cooking and ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities were significantly higher than those of potato starch and corn starch. Acorn starch also exhibited outstanding particle wettability and could stabilize Pickering emulsions. The assessed emulsion showed an outstanding effect for protecting β-carotene against ultraviolet irradiation and was positively correlated with the acorn starch addition amount. The obtained results may serve as a reference for the further development of acorn starch.

Occurrence, spatial distribution, and potential risks of organic micropollutants in urban surface waters from qinghai, northwest China. CHEMOSPHERE 2023; 318:137819. Abstract
Lack of knowledge on the destiny of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in the Tibetan Plateau region of China prevents the public from being aware of the need for protecting these unique aquatic ecosystems that are precious water resources and source areas of the Yellow River. To address this knowledge gap, this study systematically investigated the multi-residue analysis, distribution, and potential risks of six types of OMPs, namely, neonicotinoid pesticides (NEOs), fungicides, organophosphate esters (OPEs), organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), psychoactive substances (PSs), and antidepressants (ADs), in surface waters of major cities in Qinghai. A total of 31 compounds, consisting of 8 NEOs, 1 fungicide, 12 OPEs, 2 OPPs, 5 PSs, and 3 ADs, were detected in >50% of the sites, showing their ubiquitous nature in the study area. Results showed that the total OMP concentration in surface water was 28.3-908 ng/L, and OPEs were the dominant composition (48.6%-97.4%). The risk quotient values of the detected diazinon and dursban regularly exceeded 1 for aquatic organisms at all sampling sites, indicating moderate-high chronic ecological risk. The joint probability curves showed that dursban and NEOs have higher risk levels than other OMPs. Although the results of the non-carcinogenic total hazard quotient of the OMPs in the surface water was less than 1 in all age groups and the carcinogenic risk was lower than the negligible risk level, the potential risks to children and infants were considerably greater and should not be underestimated. In addition to pollutant concentration and exposure duration, ingestion rate and body weight (BW) are also important factors affecting health risk, with BW having a negative effect. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this report is the first to describe OMP pollution in Qinghai, and the results provide new insight into the ecological security of the water resources of the Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract
Contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) include numerous chemicals that may pose known and unknown risks to the ecosystem, and identification and risk ranking of these compounds is essential for the environmental management. In this study, liquid and gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS and GC-QTOF-MS) were used to characterize the occurrence of CECs in the surface water of the Yellow River Estuary (YRE). A total of 295 and 315 chemicals were identified by LC-QTOF-MS and GC-QTOF-MS, respectively. The occurrence of two compounds, erucamide and 2-phenylquinoline, was for the first time reported in the aquatic environment in YRE. The concentrations of 121 CECs, including 35 antibiotics, 49 pesticides and veterinary, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and 21 phthalic acid esters were further quantified by target analysis, which showed the detection of 99 compounds in the surface water in the range of 7.07-4611.26 ng/L. Ecological risks of pollutants based on the risk quotient (RQ) method revealed that 13 pollutants posed ecological risks to the aquatic ecosystem (RQ > 1), and pesticides (n = 12) were the main risk contributors. Here, all CECs data sets were finally transformed and ranked in the framework of the toxicological priority index (ToxPi), and a total of 81 priority control pollutants were identified in the surface water of YRE. This study highlighted the necessity of suspect and nontarget screening for CECs in estuaries, and revealed the importance of localized contamination sources in urban and agricultural environment.

Abstract
In existing separation membranes, it is difficult to quickly produce large-area graphene oxide (GO) nanofiltration membranes with high permeability and high rejection, which is the bottleneck of industrialization. In this study, a pre-crosslinking rod-coating technique is reported. A GO-P-Phenylenediamine (PPD) suspension was obtained by chemically crosslinking GO and PPD for 180 min. After scraping and coating with a Mayer rod, the ultra-thin GO-PPD nanofiltration membrane with an area of 400 cm2 and a thickness of 40 nm was prepared in 30 s. The PPD formed an amide bond with GO to improve its stability. It also increased the layer spacing of GO membrane, which could improve the permeability. The prepared GO nanofiltration membrane had a 99 % rejection rate for dyes such as methylene blue, crystal violet, and Congo red. Meanwhile, the permeation flux reached to 42 LMH/bar, which was 10 times that of the GO membrane without PPD crosslinking, and it still maintained excellent stability under strongly acidic and basic conditions. This work successfully solved the problems of GO nanofiltration membranes, including the large-area fabrication, high permeability and high rejection.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the relationship between gene polymorphism of killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) and its ligand-specific human leukocyte antigen C (HLA-C) and Graves' disease (GD). Methods: Case-control study. A total of 118 unrelated GD patients (GD group) admitted to Shandong Provincial Hospital from January 2011 to December 2017 and 108 age-and sex-matched healthy controls (healthy control group) were included. The KIR genotype and its ligand HLA-C allele were detected by polymerase chain reaction sequence-specific primers (PCR-SSP). The distribution of KIR/HLA-C gene combination in GD patients and control population was analyzed to explore its association with the occurrence of GD. Results: In GD group, there were 29 males and 89 females, aged (38±14) years. In the healthy control group, there were 28 males and 80 females, aged (37±13) years. Compared with the healthy control group, the occurrence frequency of HLA-Cw01 was higher in GD group[36.4%(43/118) vs 18.5%(20/108), P=0.003], and the occurrence frequency of HLA-Cw03 and HLA-Cw06 was lower in GD group[11.9%(14/118) vs 39.8%(43/108), P<0.001; 9.3%(11/118) vs 18.5%(20/108), P=0.045]. The frequency of KIR2DL1/HLA-C2 gene combination in GD group was lower than that in control group [17.8%(21/118) vs 34.3%(37/108), P=0.005]. Logistic regression analysis showed that KIR2DL1/HLA-C2 gene combination was a protective factor for GD occurrence (OR=0.308, 95%CI: 0.126-0.752, P=0.010). Conclusions: The polymorphism of KIR/HLA-C gene is related to GD. The low expression of KIR2DL1/HLA-C2 in GD patients may be a protective factor for GD.

Investigation on consumption of psychoactive substances and their ecological risks using wastewater-based epidemiology: a case study on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2023; 30:21815-21824. Abstract
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the third pole of the world, and information on the consumption of psychoactive substances (PSs) in this area is scarce. In this study, we selected Qinghai Province as the research area, and the per capita consumption and prevalence of PSs were investigated using wastewater-based epidemiology. Samples from 17 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in 5 major cities in Qinghai Province were monitored, and 11 PSs were detected by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Results showed that the target compounds were detected in all samples, with relatively high concentrations of ephedrine (2.1-4825.3 ng/L) and methamphetamine (1.5-295.7 ng/L). The consumption of methamphetamine in Xining City, Haidong City, and Haixi City was up to 78.4, 16.8, and 21.2 mg/1000 inh/d (the PS consumption per 1000 inhabitants in 1 day), respectively, higher than that in the other two cities, which was the result of the different consumption patterns and its relationship with the economic levels of each city. High consumption of methadone (47.9 mg/1000 inh/day) was found in Xining City, which might be related to the methadone maintenance therapy sites in the city. Methamphetamine was the most prevalent drug, with the prevalence ranging from 0.003 (Guoluo) to 0.197% (Xining), and the prevalence of other PSs was low. The ecological risk assessment of PSs in the effluent of WWTPs showed that methadone exerted a low risk to aquatic organisms in three sites, while other substances posed potential risk or no risk. However, the long-term effect of PSs cannot be ignored.

Abstract
Thiamethoxam (THM) is a commercial neonicotinoid insecticide with broad-spectrum insecticidal activity. It has been widely detected in the aquatic environment, but its behavioral toxicity on aquatic organisms received limited attention. In this study, adult zebrafish were exposed to THM at three levels (0.1, 10, and 1000 μg/L) for 45 days to investigate its effect on their ecological behavior, histopathology, bioaccumulation, and stress response. The bioconcentration factor in zebrafish brain was significantly higher (p < 0.05) at low concentration of THM (0.1 μg/L) than in other treatment groups. In terms of individual behavior, the locomotor activity, aggregation, and social activity of fish were enhanced after THM exposure, but the memory of the food zone was disturbed and abnormal swimming behavior was observed. THM exposure caused brain tissue necrosis, erythrocyte infiltration, cloudy swelling, and other pathological changes in brain tissue and affected the concentrations of acetylcholinesterase and cortisol related to neurotoxicity. The condition factor and organ coefficients (brain, heart, and intestine) of zebrafish were markedly impacted by THM treatment at 0.1 and 1000 μg/L, respectively. This finding showed that THM was more harmful to fish behavior than lethality, reproduction, and growth, and a behavioral study can be a useful tool for ecological risk assessment.

Abstract
To coordinate the trade-off between the separation and permeation of the nanofiltration membrane for the separation of Mg2+/Li+, we regulated poly(ethyleneimine)/piperazine interface polymerization parameters to construct a positively/negatively charged ultrathin Janus nanofiltration membrane at a free aqueous-organic interface. At the optimized interfacial polymerization parameters, 0.03 wt % of piperazine reacted with trimethylbenzene chloride prior to poly(ethyleneimine), forming a primary polyamide layer with fewer defects or limiting large-scale defects of the polyamide layer. The controlled subsequent reaction of poly(ethyleneimine) and trimethylbenzene chloride results in a Janus nanofiltration membrane, with one side enriched with the carboxyl groups, the other side enriched with the amine groups, and a dense polyamide structure in the middle. Under the optimum conditions, the positive potential of the rear surface of the prepared membrane was 14.57 mV, and the water contact angle reached 71.31°, while the negative potential of the front surface was -25.48 mV, and the water contact angle was 12.93°, confirming a Janus membrane with opposite charges and large hydrophilicity differences in the front and rear surfaces. With a high cross-linking degree, a 40 nm thick polyamide layer is 29.09% more thinner than the traditional polyamide membrane. The ultrathin Janus nanofiltration membrane showed an excellent separation factor (SLi,Mg of 18.26), stability, and water permeability flux (10.6 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1). The rejections to MgCl2, CaCl2, MgSO4, and Na2SO4 are measured above 90% at a nearly constant permeability of 10.6 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, particularly stable rejections to MgCl2 and Na2SO4.

Abstract
Freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem services may decline because of toxicant input, and other environmental variables often co-occur with contaminants to jeopardize the freshwater ecosystem. In this study, Danjiangkou Reservoir (DJKR) in central China was selected as the target research area to investigate the impact of multiple categories of micropollutants coupled with other stressors on the reservoir ecosystem. A total of 140 samples were collected from 28 sites in DJKR, and 124 micropollutants, including pesticides, organophosphate esters (OPEs), psychoactive substances, antiviral drugs, and pharmaceutical and personal care products, were quantified. A total of 108 micropollutants were detected in the water samples, with sum concentrations ranging from 82.35 ng·L-1 to 1436.57 ng·L-1, and 71 of them had a detection frequency above 50 %, indicating the prevailing micropollutant contamination in the reservoir. The most severe pollution and risks were observed in the tributaries of DJKR. Pesticides (neonicotinoid and triazine) and OPEs were the major contributors to the ecological risk in the reservoir. Insecticides, herbicides, and OPEs accounted for the majority of the risks to fish, algae, and invertebrates, respectively. The determined priority pollutants should be paid increased attention. Environmental variables and human activities, such as human land use, induced the potential aquatic threats of micropollutants in DJKR. Results demonstrated that micropollutant pollution was one of the dominant pressures faced by aquatic organisms and human beings, and human activities played important roles as well.

Abstract
Organophosphate esters (OPEs), substitutes of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, have been found in a variety of marine environmental matrices, whereas little is known about the feature and sources of seawater OPEs from the environments simultaneously affected by multiple anthropogenic activities. Jiaozhou Bay is one typical bay heavily disturbed by human activities, which was semi-enclosed and surrounded by large amounts of discharged rivers and catchments, various types of ports, and aquaculture farms. This study found that concentrations of Σ13OPEs ranged from 23.90 to 366.40 ng/L (median: 37.76 ng/L) in the seawater and from 90.15 to 1183.14 ng/L (median: 940.61 ng/L) in the inflowing river water. Tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate, triethyl phosphate, and tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate were the predominant congener, with the percentage of 43.76%, 22.80%, and 14.01%, respectively, in the bay water and 52.47%, 11.31%, and 23.66% in the river water. The overall spatial distribution was characterized by a higher concentration of Σ13OPEs and halogenated-OPEs in the nearshore sites and in the inflowing rivers, which were surrounded by urbanized areas with dense anthropogenic activities, especially along the eastern coast. Effluent discharge and vehicular and marine traffic emissions were distinguished as two main plausible sources of OPEs to Jiaozhou Bay, based on the principal component analysis and Spearman correlations. Ecological risk analysis indicated that Σ13OPEs posed a low risk to aquatic organisms in the bay and low-to-medium risks in the inflowing rivers.

Abstract
Industry wastewater is considered one of the worst polluters of our precious water ecologies. However, the types of pollutants present in wastewater from industrial wastewater treatment plants (IWTPs) are still unclear. In this study, a simple and effective chemical fingerprinting method for checking the source-sink relationships among different industrial wastewaters and their effluent-receiving river was established. 107, 228, 155, and 337 chemicals were screened out in wastewater from electronics, steel, textile, and printing and dyeing plants, respectively. Chemical fingerprinting of the detected chemicals was performed, and results showed that aromatic compounds were the most prevalent among the pollutant categories (i.e., 56, 189, and 168 in electronics, iron and steel, and printing and dyeing plants, respectively). The traceability analysis of the chemicals selected in the effluent determined the characteristic pollutants of different industrial enterprises. Sixty-eight compounds were identified as the characteristic pollutants in the different process stages of wastewater of the four IWTPs. Of the 84 effluent-receiving river water signature pollutants, 47.6% (n = 40) were also detected in the effluent from the four IWTPs. Effective screening of organic pollutants in industrial wastewater and determining their sources will help accelerate the improvement of industrial wastewater treatment technology.

Abstract
The occurrence, distribution, and ecological risks of psychoactive substances (PSs) in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) was investigated in this study. The surface water samples were collected in July in 2020 from five major water bodies, and 9 PSs were determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The mean concentrations of the total PSs were 2.19-96.86 ng/L in lakes and 4.56-34.47 ng/L in rivers. Amphetamine (AMP) was the predominant contaminant both in lakes and rivers with a mean concentration of 12.21 ± 22.76 ng/L and 9.83 ± 6.14 ng/L, respectively. The compositions of PSs in lakes and rivers were significantly different. AMP, methadone (MTD), 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), and ketamine (KET) were the most detected contaminants in lakes, while in rivers AMP, MDA, heroin (HER), and methamphetamine (METH) were the most detected ones. Concentrations of AMP and MTD, the two predominant drugs, varied spatially, with the decreasing concentration of AMP in the order of Huangshui River > Yamzhog Yumco Lake > Qinghai Lake > Lhasa River > Namco Lake, and of MTD in the order of Qinghai Lake > Namco Lake > Huangshui River > Yamzhog Yumco Lake. The risk quotients (RQs) of PSs ranged from 4.44 × 10-6 to 4.32 × 10-2, indicating a low risk of PSs in the aquatic ecosystem in QTP. Compared with other research in the world, the contamination of psychoactive substances in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau was at relatively low levels with low ecological risks.

Abstract
The urbanization of Tibetan Plateau (TP) probably results in a significant contamination of organic pollutants in the area, such as phthalate esters (PAEs). However, there is a lack of monitoring and evaluation of their occurrence and risks in the outdoor dust on TP. This study for the first time investigated the concentrations, distributions and health risk of PAEs in outdoor dust samples on TP, China. A total of 132 outdoor dust samples were collected from five different functional areas, and results showed the ubiquitous detection of all PAEs in the samples. The Σ6PAEs concentrations ranged from 0.08 to 31.49 μg·g-1 with a mean of 3.57 μg·g-1. High concentrations of Σ6PAEs in the outdoor dust were found in commercial districts, which were attributed to the heavy use of PAEs in the public commerce such as consumer products, commodities, and building materials. Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the dominant components accounting for 30.65% and 53.19% of the Σ6PAEs. Principal component analysis, positive matrix factorization, and correlation analysis were used to apportion the potential sources of PAEs in outdoor dust samples. The PAEs in the outdoor dust originated mainly from wide application of plasticizers as well as cosmetics and personal care products. The main pathways of human exposure to PAEs in the outdoor dust were ingestion and dermal absorption of dust particles. The total intakes of PAEs from outdoor dusts for children and adults were 1.50 × 10-5 and 2.47 × 10-6 mg·kg-1·d-1, respectively. Children were more susceptible to the PAEs intake than the adults. Although the estimated health risks of the six PAEs are currently acceptable, caution is needed given the likely future increase in use of these PAEs and the currently unknown contribution to human exposure by other medium.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The International Trauma Questionnaire-Child and Adolescent version (ITQ-CA) is a self-report measure that assesses posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD) based on the diagnostic formulation of the 11th version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). This study aimed to provide a Chinese translation and psychometric evaluation of the ITQ-CA using a sample of mental-health service seeking adolescents in Mainland China. METHODS The ITQ-CA was translated and back-translated from English to simplified Chinese and finalized with consensus from an expert panel. Adolescents ages 12-17 were recruited via convenience sampling from an outpatient psychiatric clinic in Mainland China. Participants completed the ITQ-CA; measures of four criterion variables (depression, anxiety, stress, adverse childhood experiences); and the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). Construct validity, concurrent validity, and comparison of PTSD caseness between ICD-11 and DSM-5 measures were assessed. RESULTS The final sample consisted of 111 Chinese adolescents (78% female; mean age of 15.23), all diagnosed with a major depressive disorder. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated the two-factor second-order model provided optimal fit. All criterion variables were positively and significant correlated with the six ITQ-CA symptom cluster summed scores. In the present sample, 69 participants (62.16%) met symptom criteria for ICD-PTSD or CPTSD using the ITQ-CA, and 73 participants (65.77%) met caseness for DSM-5 PTSD using the PCL-5. Rates of PTSD symptom cluster endorsement and caseness deriving from both diagnostic systems were comparable. CONCLUSIONS The Chinese ITQ-CA has acceptable psychometric properties and confers additional benefits in identifying complex presentations of trauma-related responses in younger people seeking mental health services.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the influence of differential parenting in early life on the physical and mental health of middle-aged and elderly women, and analyze the mediating effect of early life health. Methods: Based on 8 204 women aged 45-84 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2018, the life course survey data of CHARLS 2014 were matched by ID number. Logistic regression analysis models were used to analyze the direct impact of differential parenting in early life on chronic diseases and depression of middle-aged and elderly women, and the KHB method was used to analyze the mediating effect of early life health. Results: The prevalence of chronic diseases in middle-aged and elderly women was 81.05% and the detection rate of depression among them was 41.46%. After adjusting for other confounding factors, parents' preference for boys in early life increased the possibility of chronic diseases of middle-aged and elderly women by 18.2% (OR=1.182, 95%CI: 1.013-1.381). Compared with the women whose parents had no differential upbringing in early life, the parents' preference for boys or brothers/sisters in early life increased the possibility of depression in middle-aged and elderly women by 16.1% (OR=1.161, 95%CI:1.030-1.309) and 17.4% (OR=1.174, 95%CI:1.032-1.336),respectly. Early life health was one of the mediating factors that parents' preference for brothers and sisters could affect the mental health status of middle-aged and elderly women, and the mediating effect accounted for 8.603% of the total effect. Conclusion: Differential parenting in early life may have an impact on the physical and mental health of middle-aged and elderly women. Differential parenting could affect the early life health status of women, and then affect the mental health in their middle and old age.

Association between awareness of vulnerability and disaster preparedness in an infrastructure-resilient city: a population-based study. Public Health 2022; 209:23-29. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Factors associated with an individual's awareness of vulnerability can be modified by the infrastructure of a city. These factors may impact disaster preparedness among local populations in an infrastructure-resilient city, which further influences the health risks of various population subgroups. STUDY DESIGN This was a population-based study. METHODS Four population subgroups, which have previously been reported to be related to awareness of vulnerability (i.e. past experiences, sociodemographic deprivation, poor housing conditions and family medical needs), were analysed for their impacts on disaster preparedness. Validated population-based phone interviews (n = 856) were conducted in Hong Kong. Three types of disaster preparedness were studied: (1) physical preparedness; (2) social preparedness; and (3) education preparedness. RESULTS Previous experience of social hazards, accidental hazards and epidemics increased disaster preparedness among the local population. Specifically, experiences of accidental hazards and social hazards were positively associated with physical preparedness (odds ratios 1.626, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.215, 2.172) and 1.501 [95% CI 1.114, 2.024], respectively). However, experiences of natural hazards did not increase preparedness, even in Hong Kong, which is a city with high 'disaster resilience' because of its well-developed infrastructure. Moreover, individuals with a low educational level or low income had lower education preparedness, unmarried individuals had lower social preparedness, and poor housing conditions of non-private-housing households had negative associations with education preparedness. These findings partially align with local disaster responses to the 2018 Typhoon Mangkhut, the 2019 social unrest and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, all of which were observed after the 2018 survey reported in this study. CONCLUSIONS Social and environmental interventions should be targeted to marginalised subpopulations through location-based community strategies to encourage increased environmental knowledge and participation in disaster preparedness activities.

The occurrence and risk of organophosphate esters (OPEs) has become a global concern in recent years. This study investigated the occurrence, spatial distribution, and potential sources of thirteen OPEs and their associated ecological and human health risks in water samples from the largest freshwater lake, Poyang Lake, together with its five major inflow rivers and the water channel to Yangtze River. The total OPEs concentrations ranged from 38.44 ng/L to 428.94 ng/L, and the largest tributary Ganjiang River was much more polluted than other rivers. Chlorinated OPEs, such as tris (1-chloro‑2-propyl) phosphate and tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate occupied the dominant composition of OPEs in the research area. Principal component analysis with multiple linear regression, positive matrix factorization, and correlation analysis were used to apportion the potential sources of OPEs in surface water. The combined contribution of polyvinyl chloride, polyester resins, and polyurethane foam (68.64%), antifoam agent and hydraulic fluids (21.50%), and the release of decorative materials and electric equipment from indoor (9.86%) were identified as the OPEs sources in the study region. The risk quotients (RQs) showed the ecological risk was negligible, but 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate exposures posed medium ecological risk to aquatic organisms. The carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of the target OPEs were below the theoretical risk threshold values, however, toddlers were much more sensitive to the OPEs exposure in surface water than teenagers and adults. Oral ingestion was the principal exposure pathway, and the health risk via oral ingestion was 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than dermal contact exposure route.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the effect of childhood living environment sanitation on the prevalence of chronic diseases in middle-aged and elderly rural residents and test the mediating product of childhood health status. Methods: Based on the data of 12 506 rural residents jointly interviewed by the latest survey of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS) in 2018 and the life course survey in 2014, the χ2 test, Rank sum test, logistic regression analysis model, Propensity score weighting method, negative binomial regression model and KHB analysis method were used for analysis. Results: After adjusting for other confounding factors, compared with rural residents with better living environment sanitation in childhood, the risk of asthma in middle-aged and elderly rural residents with poor childhood living environment sanitation increased by 23.7% (OR=1.237,95%CI: 1.060-1.445), and the risk of liver disease, kidney disease, and digestive system disease increased by 16.4% (OR=1.164,95%CI: 1.006-1.347) and 22.4% (OR=1.224,95%CI: 1.083-1.383) and 19.6% (OR=1.196,95%CI: 1.103-1.296), the possibility of dyslipidemia and heart disease increased by 26.6% (OR=1.266,95%CI: 1.153-1.390) and 13.6% (OR=1.136,95%CI: 1.031-1.253). The negative binomial regression model analysis results show that, on average, the number of chronic diseases of middle-aged and elderly rural residents with poor living environment sanitation in childhood is 0.176 more than that of middle-aged and elderly rural residents with better living environment sanitation in childhood. Childhood health status played an intermediary role of 7.143%. Conclusion: There is a statistical correlation between residential environmental sanitation in childhood and the prevalence and number of chronic diseases in middle-aged and elderly rural residents. Childhood health status plays a partial intermediary role. Attention should be paid to the construction and management of rural residents' residential environment to provide a clean and hygienic growth environment for children and adolescents to promote the health of rural residents in the whole life cycle.

Intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging as a quantitative tool for evaluating disease activity in patients with axial spondyloarthritis. Clin Radiol 2022; 77:e434-e441. [PMID: 35232574 DOI: 10.1016/j.crad.2022.02.004] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/06/2021] [Accepted: 02/02/2022] [Indexed: 12/31/2022]
Abstract
AIM To determine the correlations between four quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters derived from intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted images (IVIM DWI) and the semi-quantitative Spondyloarthritis Research Consortium of Canada (SPARCC) score of the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) and five clinical activity indices in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). AND METHODS A total of 75 patients with axSpA and complete clinical activity indices and SIJ MRI were enrolled to this prospective study. Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate correlations between MRI parameters and clinical activity indices after controlling for confounders. All data were further analysed using Pearson's correlation coefficients (r). RESULTS Only pure diffusion coefficient (D) and incoherent perfusion related microcirculation (D∗) were found to be independently positively correlated with several clinical activity indices (all p<0.05). Positive correlations were observed between D and the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), Patient Global Assessment (PGA), extent of influence of pain, with r of 0.605, 0.402, 0.319, and 0.485 (all p<0.0125). D∗ correlated positively with BASDAI, BASFI, and PGA (r=0.436, 0.356, 0.301, respectively; all p<0.0125). CONCLUSION D and D∗ derived from IVIM DWI could be associated with some disease activity indices in patients with axSpA; apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and SPARCC scores were not correlated with these indices. IVIM DWI may be a useful tool for the quantitative assessment of disease activity in patients with axSpA.

Association between air pollution and outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis: Effect modification by ambient temperature and relative humidity. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2022; 821:152960. [PMID: 35016948 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2022.152960] [Citation(s) in RCA: 10] [Impact Index Per Article: 5.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/09/2021] [Revised: 01/02/2022] [Accepted: 01/04/2022] [Indexed: 06/14/2023]
Abstract
Mounting evidence indicated the associations between air pollution and outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis (AR), while few studies assessed the effect modification of these associations by ambient temperature and relative humidity (RH). In this study, dataset of AR outpatients was obtained from Chinese People's Liberation Army Strategic Support Force Characteristic Medical Center in Beijing during 2014 to 2019, and the average concentrations of air pollutants including particulate matter ≤2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5) and ≤10 μm (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and meteorological factors (temperature and RH) at the same period were collected from one nearby air monitoring station. We performed a time-series study with Poisson regression model to examine the effects of air pollutants on AR outpatients after adjustment for potential confounders. And the effects modification analysis was further conducted by stratifying temperature and RH by tertiles into three groups of low, middle and high. In total of 33,599 outpatient visits for AR were recorded during the study period. Results found that a 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and SO2 was associated with significant increases in AR outpatients of 1.24% (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.69%, 1.78%), 0.79% (95% CI: 0.43%, 1.15%), 3.05% (95% CI: 1.72%, 4.40%) and 5.01% (95% CI: 1.18%, 8.96%), respectively. Stronger associations were observed in males than those in females, as well as in young adults (18-44 years) than those in other age groups. Air pollution effects on AR outpatients increased markedly at low temperature (<33.3th percentile) and high RH (>66.7th percentile). Findings in this study indicate that air pollution is associated with increased risk of AR outpatients, and the effects of air pollution on AR could be enhanced at low temperature and high RH.

Inter-annual variation and comprehensive evaluation of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the Yellow Sea, China. MARINE POLLUTION BULLETIN 2022; 176:113440. [PMID: 35183022 DOI: 10.1016/j.marpolbul.2022.113440] [Citation(s) in RCA: 10] [Impact Index Per Article: 5.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/15/2021] [Revised: 02/04/2022] [Accepted: 02/05/2022] [Indexed: 06/14/2023]
Abstract
Considering the extensive production and continuous usage of organophosphate esters (OPEs) around the urbanized coasts in recent years, the inter-annual variation and the ecological risks of OPEs in the Yellow Sea (YS), China were systematically evaluated in summer 2015 and 2019. The major component of OPEs, halogenated-OPEs in 78 surface and bottom seawater samples collected from 39 locations in the YS in 2019 were compared with 62 samples at 31 sites conducted in the same periods and similar stations in 2015. The average concentration of halogenated-OPEs increased 1.57, 2.50 folds in the surface and bottom seawater, respectively, in recent 5 years. The proportion of TCPP to halogenated-OPEs exhibited an increasing trend from 56.49% in 2015 to 79.95% in 2019. The peak values of halogenated-OPEs changed from the nearshore regions (33°N-38°N) in 2015 to the nearshore and offshore regions (33°N-35°N) in 2019, implying the growing terrigenous emission sources, especially some large OPEs producers nearby the coastal zones in the northern area of Jiangsu province. The targeted halogenated-OPEs posed no significant or low ecological risks to the aquatic organisms in 2015 and 2019, however, the values of RQ showed an elevated trend in 2019. Therefore, the ecological risks of OPEs in this region still need continuous concern due to the gradually increasing OPEs usage and production.
