Abstract
Peritoneal dialysis (PD) and prolonged exposure to PD fluids (PDF) induce peritoneal membrane (PM) fibrosis and hypervascularity, leading to functional PM degeneration. 2-deoxy-glucose (2-DG) has shown potential as PM antifibrotic by inhibiting hyper-glycolysis induced mesothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (MMT). We investigated whether administration of 2-DG with several PDF affects the permeability of mesothelial and endothelial barrier of the PM. The antifibrotic effect of 2-DG was confirmed by the gel contraction assay with embedded mesothelial (MeT-5A) or endothelial (EA.hy926) cells cultured in Dianeal® 2.5 % (CPDF), BicaVera® 2.3 % (BPDF), Balance® 2.3 % (LPDF) with/without 2-DG addition (0.2 mM), and qPCR for αSMA, CDH2 genes. Moreover, 2-DG effect was tested on the permeability of monolayers of mesothelial and endothelial cells by monitoring the transmembrane resistance (RTM), FITC-dextran (10, 70 kDa) diffusion and mRNA expression levels of CLDN-1 to -5, ZO1, SGLT1, and SGLT2 genes. Contractility of MeT-5A cells in CPDF/2-DG was decreased, accompanied by αSMA (0.17 ± 0.03) and CDH2 (2.92 ± 0.29) gene expression fold changes. Changes in αSMA, CDH2 were found in EA.hy926 cells, though αSMA also decreased under LPDF/2-DG incubation (0.42 ± 0.02). Overall, 2-DG mitigated the PDF-induced alterations in mesothelial and endothelial barrier function as shown by RTM, dextran transport and expression levels of the CLDN-1 to -5, ZO1, and SGLT2. Thus, supplementation of PDF with 2-DG not only reduces MMT but also improves functional permeability characteristics of the PM mesothelial and endothelial barrier.

Abstract
Drosophila melanogaster is a widely used animal model in human diseases and to date it has not been applied to the study of the impact of tobacco use on human sexual function. Hence, this report examines the effects of different concentrations of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) exposure on the size and sexual behavior of D. melanogaster. Wild-type flies were held in vials containing CSE-infused culture media at concentrations of 10%, 25%, and 50% for three days, and their offspring were reared under the same conditions before measuring their body size and mating behavior. CSE exposure during development reduced the tibia length and body mass of emerging adult flies and prolonged the time required for successful courtship copulation success, while courtship behaviors (wing extension, tapping, abdomen bending, attempted copulation) remained largely unchanged. Our findings indicate that CSE exposure negatively affects the development of flies and their subsequent reproductive success. Future experiments should investigate the CSE effect on male female fertility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), a rare and aggressive pleural tumor, has significant histological and molecular heterogeneity. Primary Cilium (PC), an organelle of emerging importance in malignancies, has been scarcely investigated in MPM. A critical molecular complex for the PC function is the BBSome and here we aimed at assessing its expression patterns in ordinary 2D and spheroid 3D cell cultures. METHODS A human benign mesothelial cell line (MeT-5A), MPM cell lines (M14K, epithelioid MPM; MSTO, biphasic MPM), and primary MPM cells (pMPM) were used. Primers specific for the human BBS1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 18 transcripts were designed, and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was done with β-actin as the gene of reference. The relative gene expression across 2D and 3D cultures was analyzed by the expression factor (mean of 1/ΔCt values). With the 2-∆∆Ct method the gene expression fold changes were assessed from qRT-PCR data. Molecular changes using the PC-modulating drugs ammonium sulfate (AS) and lithium chloride (LC) were also determined. RESULTS PC was present in all cells used in the study at approximately 15% of the observed area. BBSome transcripts were differentially expressed in different dimensions of cell culture (2D vs. 3D) in all cell lines and pMPM. Treatment with AS and LC affected the expression of the ciliary BBS2 and BBS18 genes in the benign as well as in the MPM cells. CONCLUSIONS These data indicate distinct BBSome molecular profiles in human benign and MPM cells cultured in 2D and 3D dimensions and support the notion that PC genes should be investigated as potential MPM therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Thrombin-Activatable Fibrinolysis Inhibitor (TAFI) is a carboxypeptidase B-like proenzyme encoded by the CPB2 gene. After thrombin activation, TAFI downregulates fibrinolysis, thus linking the latter with coagulation. TAFI has been shown to play a role in venous and arterial thrombotic diseases, yet, data regarding the molecular mechanisms underlying its function have been conflicting. In this study, we focused on the prediction and functional enrichment analysis (FEA) of the TAFI interaction network and the microRNAs (miRNAs) targeting the members of this network in an attempt to identify novel components and pathways of TAFI-related thrombosis. To this end, we used nine bioinformatics software tools. We found that the TAFI interactome consists of 28 unique genes mainly involved in hemostasis. Twenty-four miRNAs were predicted to target these genes. Co-annotation analysis of the predicted interactors with respect to Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways and transcription factors (TFs) pointed to the complement and coagulation cascades as well as neutrophil extracellular trap formation. Cancer, stroke, and intracranial aneurysm were among the top 20 significant diseases related to the identified miRNAs. We reason that the predicted biomolecules should be further studied in the context of TAFI-related thrombosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Primary cilium (PC) is a single non-motile antenna-like organelle composed of a microtubule core axon originating from the mother centriole of the centrosome. The PC is universal in all mammalian cells and protrudes to the extracellular environment receiving mechanochemical cues that it transmits in the cell. AIM To investigate the role of PC in mesothelial malignancy in the context of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) phenotypes. MATERIALS AND METHODS The effect of pharmacological deciliation [using ammonium sulphate (AS) or chloral hydrate (CH)] and PC elongation [using lithium chloride (LC)] on cell viability, adhesion, and migration (2D cultures) as well as in mesothelial sphere formation, spheroid invasion and collagen gel contraction (3D cultures) was investigated in benign mesothelial MeT-5A cells and in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) cell lines, M14K (epithelioid) and MSTO (biphasic), and primary malignant pleural mesothelioma cells (pMPM). RESULTS Pharmacological deciliation or elongation of the PC significantly affected cell viability, adhesion, migration, spheroid formation, spheroid invasion and collagen gel contraction in MeT-5A, M14K, MSTO cell lines and in pMPM cells compared to controls (no drug treatment). CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate a pivotal role of the PC in functional phenotypes of benign mesothelial cells and MPM cells.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of primary care physicians and residents towards the COVID-19 pandemic in Greece. A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted in Greece during March 2021. The population frame for the study was a list of currently practicing primary care physicians and residents who were registered within one of the main associations of general/family medicine in Greece. Hierarchical multiple logistic regression analysis was performed for practices at higher levels (vs. lower) in relation to knowledge, attitudes, and general characteristics of participants. Overall, 194 participants completed the survey (e-response rate: 38.4%). In total, 94% of participants were familiar with official recommendations regarding SARS-CoV-2, and 88.7% were vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 or promptly intended to be. Physicians working in the private sector had a higher average practices score when compared to physicians working in the public sector (87.6 vs. 81.9, p < 0.05). Higher levels of attitudes predicted greater odds for higher levels of practices (odds ratio = 4.18, p < 0.05). Despite the relatively high COVID-19 vaccination rate of physicians, several participants were unvaccinated due to a then unscheduled first dose appointment. Attitudes were the only determinant for more proper practices towards the prevention of COVID-19.

Abstract
Background: Relationships among perinatal depression occurring a number of weeks before and after childbirth and smoking have been identified. Depression may lead to the inability to abstain from smoking during pregnancy. Objectives: This study aims to determine factors affecting smoking during pregnancy revealing potential relationships between depression and smoking patterns during and after pregnancy. Methods: A total of 206 mothers participated in the study. Data were collected through self-reporting as respondents were asked to answer questionnaires during the 12th week of pregnancy, during the 30th week of pregnancy, after childbirth, and during the period after pregnancy. Relationships between smoking behavior, sociodemographic variables, and feelings of perinatal depression were examined using chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis. A follow-up investigation has been conducted after 2 years revealing the percentage of women returning to their smoking habits. Results: Smokers before (B = 0.568; p = 0.026) and during pregnancy (B = 1.238; p = 0.009) were more likely to express depression before childbirth. Average daily cigarette consumption before (B = 1.110; p = 0.001) and during pregnancy (B = 1.167; p = 0.002) was associated with depression during pregnancy. Women who smoked during pregnancy reported significantly more depressive symptoms after pregnancy (B = 1.757; p = 0.005) compared with nonsmokers and smokers who abstained during pregnancy. Average daily cigarette consumption during pregnancy (B = 1.402; p = 0.002) affects the expression of depression after pregnancy. Women who smoked before pregnancy (B = 0.568; p = 0.025) and their average daily cigarette consumption before pregnancy (B = 1.465; p = 0.025) were highly associated with the inability to abstain from smoking during pregnancy. However, the knowledge of risks of maternal smoking during pregnancy (B = −1.110; p = 0.001) and medical consult on abstaining (B = −1.238; p = 0.009) reinforced the maternal attempt to quit smoking. The follow-up investigation revealed an elevated amount of women returning to previous smoking patterns. Discussion: Perinatal depression is associated with smoking patterns during pregnancy. Assessment of depression and smoking is needed throughout perinatal period to support the health of women.

Abstract
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a chronic disease that significantly increases morbidity and mortality of the affected population. There is lack of data concerning the OSAS prevalence in the insular part of Greece. The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-reported prevalence of OSAS in 4 Greek insular complexes comprising 41 islands, and to assess the awareness of the population regarding OSAS and its diagnosis. Our study comprised 700 participants from 41 islands of the Ionian, Cyclades, Dodecanese and Northeast Aegean island complexes that were studied by means of questionnaires via a telephone randomized survey (responsiveness rate of 25.74%). Participants were assessed by the Berlin Questionnaire (BQ) for evaluation of OSA risk, by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) for evaluation of excessive daytime sleepiness, and by 3 questions regarding the knowledge and diagnosis of OSAS. The percentage of participants at high risk according to BQ was 27.29% and the percentage of people who were at high risk according to ESS was 15.43%. A percentage of 6.29% of the population was at high risk for OSAS (high risk both in BQ and ESS). A high percentage of 73.43%, were aware of OSAS as a syndrome however a significantly less percentage (28.00%) was aware of how a diagnosis of OSAS is established. The community prevalence of OSAS in Greek islands in combination with the low-level awareness of the OSAS diagnostic methods highlights the need for development of health promotion programs aiming at increasing the detection of patients at risk while increasing the awareness of OSAS.

Abstract
The significant similarities in airway epithelial cells between mammals and the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster have rendered the latter an important model organism for studies of chronic inflammatory lung diseases. Focusing on the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), we here mapped human gene orthologs associated with this disease in D. melanogaster to identify functionally equivalent genes for immediate, further screening with the fruit fly model. The DIOPT-DIST tool was accessed for the prediction of the COPD-associated orthologs between humans and Drosophila. Enrichment analyses with respect to pathways of the retrieved functional homologs were performed using the ToppFun and FlyMine tools, identifying 73 unique human genes as well as 438 fruit fly genes. The ToppFun analysis verified that the human gene list is associated with COPD phenotypes. Further, the FlyMine investigation highlighted that the Drosophila genes are functionally connected mainly with the 'ABC-family proteins mediated transport' and the 'beta-catenin independent WNT signaling pathway'. These results suggest an evolutionarily conserved role towards responses to inhaled toxicants and CO2 in both species. We reason that the predicted orthologous genes should be further studied in the Drosophila models of cigarette smoke-induced COPD.

Abstract
Haemophilus influenzae (Hi), Moraxella catarrhalis (MorCa) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Psa) are three of the most common gram-negative bacteria responsible for human respiratory diseases. In this study, we aimed to identify, using the functional enrichment analysis (FEA), the human gene interaction network with the aforementioned bacteria in order to elucidate the full spectrum of induced pathogenicity. The Human Pathogen Interaction Database (HPIDB 3.0) was used to identify the human proteins that interact with the three pathogens. FEA was performed via the ToppFun tool of the ToppGene Suite and the GeneCodis database so as to identify enriched gene ontologies (GO) of biological processes (BP), cellular components (CC) and diseases. In total, 11 human proteins were found to interact with the bacterial pathogens. FEA of BP GOs revealed associations with mitochondrial membrane permeability relative to apoptotic pathways. FEA of CC GOs revealed associations with focal adhesion, cell junctions and exosomes. The most significantly enriched annotations in diseases and pathways were lung adenocarcinoma and cell cycle, respectively. Our results suggest that the Hi, MorCa and Psa pathogens could be related to the pathogenesis and/or progression of lung adenocarcinoma via the targeting of the epithelial cellular junctions and the subsequent deregulation of the cell adhesion and apoptotic pathways. These hypotheses should be experimentally validated.

Abstract
The involvement of Septate Junctions (SJs) in critical cellular functions that extend beyond their role as diffusion barriers in the epithelia and the nervous system has made the fruit fly an ideal model for the study of human diseases associated with impaired Tight Junction (TJ) function. In this study, we summarized current knowledge of the Drosophila melanogaster SJ-related proteins, focusing on their unconventional functions. Additionally, we sought to identify human orthologs of the corresponding genes as well as protein domain families. The systematic literature search was performed in PubMed and Scopus databases using relevant key terms. Orthologs were predicted using the DIOPT tool and aligned protein regions were determined from the Pfam database. 3-D models of the smooth SJ proteins were built on the Phyre2 and DMPFold protein structure prediction servers. A total of 30 proteins were identified as relatives to the SJ cellular structure. Key roles of these proteins, mainly in the regulation of morphogenetic events and cellular signalling, were highlighted. The investigation of protein domain families revealed that the SJ-related proteins contain conserved domains that are required not only for cell-cell interactions and cell polarity but also for cellular signalling and immunity. DIOPT analysis of orthologs identified novel human genes as putative functional homologs of the fruit fly SJ genes. A gap in our knowledge was identified regarding the domains that occur in the proteins encoded by eight SJ-associated genes. Future investigation of these domains is needed to provide functional information.

Abstract
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive tumour that grows in the pleural cavity. MPM spheroids released in the pleural fluid can form new tumour foci. Cell-cell, cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions in 2D and 3D impact malignant cell behaviour during cell adhesion, migration, proliferation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). In this study, epithelioid, biphasic and sarcomatoid MPM cell types as well as benign mesothelial cells were tested with regards to the above phenotypes. Fibronectin (FN) and homologous cell-derived extracellular matrix (hcd-ECM) treated substratum differentially affected the above phenotypes. 3D MPM spheroid invasion was higher in FN-collagen matrices in the epithelioid and biphasic cells, while 3D cell cultures of epithelioid and sarcomatoid MPM cells in FN-collagen showed a higher contractility compared to hcd-ECM-collagen. Cell aggregates demonstrated invasive behaviour in hcd-ECM matrices alone. Our results suggest that ECM and the dimensionality affect malignant cell behaviour during cell culture studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Pleural effusions (PE) are a common clinical entity resulting from pathologies that affect the pleural space such as congestive heart failure, malignancy and pneumonia. The osmolality of the pleural fluid has never been studied as well as the effects of its changes on the pleural membrane. The purpose of this study was to identify the osmolality levels of PEs of different etiologies and to assess the potential effects of osmolality imbalance on the pleural permeability. MATERIALS AND METHODS We measured the osmolality of the PEs of 64 consecutive patients (6 with transudative, 11 with parapneumonic and 47 with malignant pleural effusions) that were hospitalized in the University Hospital of Larissa. Subsequently, we selected clinically relevant hyper- and hypo- osmolality levels and performed assessment of the permeability of sheep parietal pleura by means of Ussing chamber experiments. RESULTS The mean pleural fluid osmolality was 291.7 ± 24.89 mOms/Kg (95 % CI: 285.4-297.9), and it varied among the three groups of PEs (p = 0.05). Transformed osmolality values were associated with pH and glucose levels in the PEs. After exposure of the sheep parietal pleura to 240 mOsm/kg (hyposmolar) the transmesothelial resistance (RTM) significantly increased (p < 0.05) while at 340 mOsm/kg (hyperosmolar) the RTM was not significantly altered. CONCLUSIONS PEs osmolality differs depending on the underlying pathology and is linked to PE pH and glucose. Hypo-osmotic PEs can lead to decreased pleural permeability. These results warrant further study of the PEs osmolality levels on the function of the pleural mesothelial cells.

Abstract
The spatial correlation between defects in crystalline materials and trace element segregation plays a fundamental role in determining the physical and mechanical properties of a material, which is particularly important in naturally deformed materials. Herein, we combine electron backscatter diffraction, electron channelling contrast imaging, scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography on a naturally occurring metal sulphide in an attempt to document mechanisms of element segregation in a brittle-dominated deformation regime. Within APT reconstructions, features with a high point density comprising O-rich discs stacked over As-rich spherules are observed. The combined microscopy data allow us to interpret these as nanoscale fluid inclusions. Our observations are confirmed by simulated APT experiments of core-shell particles with a core exhibiting a very low evaporation field and the shell emulating a segregated layer at the inclusion interface. Our data has significant trans-disciplinary implications to the geosciences, the material sciences, and analytical microscopy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) have been found to exhibit lower serum vitamin D levels, even when the control groups are matched for confounding conditions. However, contradictory studies are also present. This study aimed to compare serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels between adult patients with OSAS and non-apneic controls and to evaluate the changes in 25(OH)D levels after 3 and 12 months of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. METHODS The study was comprised of 30 patients with OSAS and 30 controls. Serum 25(OH)D levels were determined at baseline and after 3 and 12 months of CPAP therapy in all patients with OSAS. For analysis, patients with OSAS were divided into subgroups by adherence, with adherence defined as CPAP usage for > 4 h per night on at least 70% of nights. RESULTS The 25(OH)D levels were not significantly different between OSAS and control groups at baseline. 25(OH)D levels did not change after 3 and 12 months of CPAP therapy. Patients who were CPAP-adherent showed less reduction in 25(OH)D levels compared with non-adherent ones (21.18 ± 9.3 vs. 12.13 ± 3.8 ng/mL, p = 0.022) after 1 year. The 25(OH)D levels were significantly correlated with higher daily CPAP usage at 3 and 12 months. Mean daily CPAP usage was a significant predictor of serum 25(OH)D levels at 12 months. CONCLUSIONS Patients with OSAS who demonstrated good CPAP adherence showed significantly higher 25(OH)D levels after 1 year compared with those not adequately using CPAP. Long-term good CPAP adherence and highly daily CPAP usage positively affected 25(OH)D levels in patients with OSAS.

Abstract
The aim of the present study is to summarize the information available, to time, regarding the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and vitamin-D (vD) levels. Moreover, the association between vD deficiency and OSA severity will also be examined. At the end of the present study the possible advantageous effect of CPAP on vD-levels will be summarized. Extensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, The Cochrane Library and Embase database. 13 articles were found concerning OSA and vD, of which 2 articles included treatment with a CPAP. Patients with OSA exhibit low levels of vD in the blood serum, and women present an even lower mean value than men. Lack of VD in blood serum seems to be related to the severity of the OSA syndrome, and to the short duration of sleep. OSA patients with concurrent metabolic syndrome exhibit lower serum vD-levels, as compared with those without metabolic syndrome. Long-term continuous positive airway pressure treatment (CPAP) treatment can increase vD-levels in male OSA patients while no change is observed in women. OSA patients demonstrate lower levels of vD in multiple studies. The severity of the OSA may be associated with vD-levels and deficiency, however more studies are needed to assess that relationship due to contradictions in current bibliography. CPAP can increase vD-levels in male patients. The relation between vD and OSA and/or CPAP is important but recent; therefore further research is needed about the exact relationship to be clarified. Also, the effect of gender hormones on vD regulation in OSA patients should be further investigated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a disorder with high prevalence among adults and is an independent risk factor for various diseases, especially those affecting the central nervous system (CNS). Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is usually the optimal choice of treatment for OSAS. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease affecting a large proportion of the elderly population. The purpose of this study was to collect information concerning the two pathological entities and investigate the effectiveness of CPAP in the treatment of AD. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this review, Twenty articles were found concerning OSAS and AD, of which one article was about treatment with donepezil and seven articles considered treatment with CPAP. RESULTS Serious OSAS and short sleep duration are associated with a high risk of developing dementia. Respiratory distress during sleep is associated with developing mild cognitive impairment at younger ages. The cerebrovascular damage of AD patients is correlated with the severity of OSAS. Lower cerebrospinal fluid levels are associated with memory disturbances and oxygen saturation parameters in patients with OSAS-AD. Continuous use of CPAP is related to the delayed onset of cognitive impairment and is suggested as an effective method of protecting cognitive function, depression, sleep quality and architecture, and daytime sleepiness in AD patients with good compliance. Treatment of CPAP patients with OSAS-AD is suggested as an effective method of protecting cognitive function. CONCLUSION Clinicians dealing with AD patients should consider CPAP treatment when OSAS coexists.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) are leading causes of upper and lower respiratory tract infections in non-immunocompetent subjects, yet the mechanisms by which they induce their pathogenicity differ significantly and remain elusive. In this study we aimed at identifying the gene interaction networks between the HRSV, HMPV respiratory pathogens and their host along with the different cell-signaling pathways associated with the above interactomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Viruses STRING database (http://viruses.string-db.org/) was used for the identification of the host-viruses interaction networks. The two lists of the predicted functional partners were entered in the FunRich tool (http://www.funrich.org) for the construction of the Venn diagram and the comparative Funcional Enrichment Analysis (FEA) with respect to biological pathways. The sets of the common and unique human genes identified in the two networks were also analyzed. The computational predictions regarding the shared human genes in the host-HRSV and the host-HMPV interactomes were further evaluated via the analysis of the GSE111732 dataset. miRNA transcriptomics data were mapped to gene targets using the miRNomics pipeline of the GeneTrail2 database (https://genetrail2.bioinf.uni-sb.de/). RESULTS Eleven out of twenty predicted human genes were common in the two interactomes (TLR4, SOCS3, SFXN1, AKT1, SFXN3, LY96, SFXN2, SOCS7, CISH, SOCS6, SOCS1). FEA of these common genes identified the kit receptor and the GH receptor signaling pathways as the most significantly enriched annotations. The remaining nine genes of the host-HRSV and the host-HMPV interaction networks were the IFIH1, DDX58, NCL, IRF3, STAT2, HSPA4, CD209, KLF6, CHKA and the MYD88, SOCS4, SOCS2, SOCS5 AKT2, AKT3, SFXN4, SFXN5 and TLR3 respectively. Distinct cell-signaling pathways were enriched per interactome. The comparative FEA highlighted the association of the host-HRSV functional partners with the negative regulation of RIG-I/MDA5 signaling. The analysis with respect to miRNAs mapping to gene targets of the GSE111732 dataset indicated that nine out of the eleven common host genes are either enriched or depleted in the sample sets (HRSV or HMPV infected) as compared with the reference set (non-infected), although with no significant scores. CONCLUSIONS We have identified both shared and unique host genes as members of the HRSV and HMPV interaction networks. The disparate human genes likely contribute to distinct responses in airway epithelial cells.

Abstract
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive cancer with poor prognosis. The main treatment for MPM is doublet chemotherapy with Cisplatin and Pemetrexed, while ongoing trials test the efficacy of pemetrexed monotherapy. However, there is lack of evidence regarding the effects of Cisplatin and Pemetrexed on MPM cell phenotypes, especially in three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures. In this study, we evaluated the effects Cisplatin and Pemetrexed on cell viability using homologous cell derived extracellular matrix (hECM) as substratum and subsequently in the following 3D cell culture phenotypes: tumor spheroid formation, tumor spheroid invasion, and collagen gel contraction. We used benign mesothelial MeT-5A cells as controls and the MPM cell lines M14K (epithelioid), MSTO (biphasic), and ZL34 (sarcomatoid). Cell viability of all cell lines was significantly decreased with all treatments. Mean tumor spheroid perimeter was reduced after treatment with Pemetrexed or the doublet therapy in all cell lines, while Cisplatin reduced the mean spheroid perimeter of MeT-5A and MSTO cells. Doublet treatment reduced the invasive capacity of spheroids of cell lines into collagenous matrices, while Cisplatin lowered the invasion of the MSTO and ZL34 cell lines, and Pemetrexed lowered the invasion of MeT-5A and ZL34 cell lines. Treatment with Pemetrexed or the combination significantly reduced the collagen gel contraction of all cell lines, while Cisplatin treatment affected only the MeT-5A and M14K cells. The results of the current study can be used as an in vitro 3D platform for testing novel drugs against MPM for ameliorating the effects of first line chemotherapeutics.

Abstract
Background and Objective: To present summary statistics regarding malignant mesothelioma (MM) mortality in Greece during the period 2005–2015 and compare it with previous decades, along with gender, age and geographical area analysis. Materials and Methods: The Hellenic Statistical Authority provided the data, which included all deaths for the period 1983 to 2015 that mentioned MM as the death cause in the corresponding death certificate. MM mortality rates have been calculated with respect to gender, age, and geographical location in Greece. Furthermore, a comparison analysis was made among three eleven consecutive year periods, in order to assess potential changes in the mortality rates. Results: The MM mortality rate has significantly increased during the period 2005–2015 both in males and females compared to earlier decades. The maximum number of MM deaths has shifted to an older age group of 70–80 years during the 2005–2015 period as compared to that of 1983–2004 in both genders. Additionally, MM mortality rates have significantly increased in all geographical areas except for the Epirus Prefecture. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate an increased MM mortality rate in Greece for the decade 2005–2015 as compared to the two previous decades. This increase is possibly due to the fact that the peak in asbestos production and use in Greece was in mid 1990s, while the asbestos ban came in effect in 2005. Based on these findings the MM epidemic in Greece has not yet peaked, therefore it is important to implement screening strategies for early MM detection.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The defects in the CLDN16 gene are a cause of primary hypomagnesemia (FHHNC), which is characterized by massive renal magnesium wasting, resulting in nephrocalcinosis and renal failure. The mutations occur throughout the gene’s coding region and can impact on intracellular trafficking of the protein or its paracellular pore forming function. To gain more understanding about the mechanisms by which CLDN16 mutations can induce FHHNC, we performed an in-depth computational analysis of the CLDN16 gene and protein, focusing specifically on the prediction of the latter’s subcellular localization. Materials and Methods: The complete nucleotide or amino acid sequence of CLDN16 in FASTA format was entered and processed in 14 databases. Results: One CpG island was identified. Twenty five promoters/enhancers were predicted. The CLDN16 interactome was found to consist of 20 genes, mainly involved in kidney diseases. No signal peptide cleavage site was identified. A probability of export to mitochondria equal to 0.9740 and a cleavable mitochondrial localization signal in the N terminal of the CLDN16 protein were predicted. The secondary structure prediction was visualized. Νo phosphorylation sites were identified within the CLDN16 protein region by applying DISPHOS to the functional class of transport. The KnotProt database did not predict any knot or slipknot in the protein structure of CLDN16. Seven putative miRNA binding sites within the 3’-UTR region of CLDN16 were identified. Conclusions: This is the first study to identify mitochondria as a probable cytoplasmic compartment for CLDN16 localization, thus providing new insights into the protein’s intracellular transport. The results relative to the CLDN16 interactome underline its role in renal pathophysiology and highlight the functional dependence of CLDNs-10, 14, 16, 19. The predictions pertaining to the miRNAs, promoters/enhancers and CpG islands of the CLDN16 gene indicate a strict regulation of its expression both transcriptionally and post-transcriptionally.

Abstract
Background and objectives: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a devastating malignancy with poor prognosis. Reliable biomarkers for MPM diagnosis, monitoring, and prognosis are needed. The aim of this study was to identify genes associated with wound healing processes whose expression could serve as a prognostic factor in MPM patients. Materials and Methods: We used data mining techniques and transcriptomic analysis so as to assess the differential transcriptional expression of wound-healing-associated genes in MPM. Moreover, we investigated the potential prognostic value as well as the functional enrichments of gene ontologies relative to microRNAs (miRNAs) of the significantly differentially expressed wound-healing-related genes in MPM. Results: Out of the 82 wound-healing-associated genes analyzed, 30 were found significantly deregulated in MPM. Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed that low ITGAV gene expression could serve as a prognostic factor favoring survival of MPM patients. Finally, gene ontology annotation enrichment analysis pointed to the members of the hsa-miR-143, hsa-miR-223, and the hsa-miR-29 miRNA family members as important regulators of the deregulated wound healing genes. Conclusions: 30 wound-healing-related genes were significantly deregulated in MPM, which are potential targets of hsa-miR-143, hsa-miR-223, and the hsa-miR-29 miRNA family members. Out of those genes, ITGAV gene expression was a prognostic factor of overall survival in MPM. Our results highlight the role of impaired tissue repair in MPM development and should be further validated experimentally.

Abstract
The wide-spread implementation of nanoparticles poses a major health concern. Unique biokinetics allow them to transfer to neurons throughout the body and inflict neurotoxicity, which is challenging to evaluate solely in mammalian experimental models due to logistics, financial and ethical limitations. In recent years, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has emerged as a promising nanotoxicology experimental surrogate due to characteristics such as ease of culture, short life cycle and high number of progeny. Most importantly, this model organism has a well conserved and fully described nervous system rendering it ideal for use in neurotoxicity assessment of nanoparticles. In that context, this mini review aims to summarize the main mechanistic findings on nanoparticle related neurotoxicity in the setting of Caenorhabditis elegans screening. The injury pathway primarily involves changes in intestinal permeability and defecation frequency both of which facilitate translocation at the site of neurons, where toxicity formation is linked partly to oxidative stress and perturbed neurotransmission.

Abstract
Nanoparticles have great potential for numerous applications due to their unique physicochemical properties. However, concerns have been raised that they may induce deleterious effects on biological systems. There is accumulating evidence that, like asbestos, inhaled nanomaterials of >5 μm and high aspect ratio (3:1), particularly rod-like carbon nanotubes, may inflict pleural disease including mesothelioma. Additionally, a recent set of case reports suggests that inhalation of polyacrylate/nanosilica could in part be associated with inflammation and fibrosis of the pleura of factory workers. However, the adverse outcomes of nanoparticle exposure to mesothelial tissues are still largely unexplored. In that context, the present review aims to provide an overview of the relevant pathophysiological implications involving toxicological studies describing effects of engineered nanoparticles on mesothelial cells and membranes. In vitro studies primarily emphasize on simulating cellular uptake and toxicity of nanotubes on benign or malignant cell lines. On the other hand, in vivo studies focus on illustrating endpoints of serosal pathology in rodent animal models. From a molecular aspect, some nanoparticle categories are shown to be cytotoxic and genotoxic after acute treatment, whereas chronic incubation may lead to malignant-like transformation. At an organism level, a number of fibrous shaped nanotubes are related with features of chronic inflammation and MWCNT-7 is the only type to consistently inflict mesothelioma.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in medical and domestic products, increasing the risk of occupational and domestic exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cells were used for cell adhesion (90 min) and proliferation experiments (3 days) while exposed to 20 nm and 60 nm AgNPs (0.2 μg/ml and 2 μg/ml) using colorimetric assays. RESULTS Exposure to 0.2 μg/ml of 20 nm and 60 nm AgNPs significantly increased cell adhesion, while at 2 μg/ml this effect was not elicited. Cell proliferation was significantly increased by both 20 nm and 60 nm AgNPs at 0.2 μg/ml, while at 2 μg/ml this effect was only elicited by the 60 nm AgNPs. CONCLUSION AgNPs alter the adhesive and proliferative properties of primary pleural mesothelial cells.

Abstract
Conventional methods may fail to identify the cause of pleural effusion (PE), thus establishing reliable biomarkers is deemed necessary. This study aimed at examining the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) as a biomarker in the differentiation between malignant and benign PEs in adults. A comprehensive literature search in PubMed (Medline), Scopus (ELSEVIER), and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases was conducted using keywords. We included studies that evaluated pleural and/or serum levels of VEGF among patients presenting with undiagnosed PE and the association between these levels and the final diagnosis. We performed a meta‐analysis to calculate the summary effect using the random effects model. Statistical analysis was performed with the statistical package for meta‐analysis Comprehensive Meta‐Analysis. Twenty studies were included in the systematic review, while 11 of them in the meta‐analysis. Pleural fluid VEGF levels among patients with malignant PE were increased by 1.93 ng/mL as compared to patients with benign PE (95% CI: 1.32–2.54, Q = 173, df (Q): 10, I2 = 94.2%, P < 0.05). Serum VEGF levels among patients with malignant PE were increased respectively by 1.90 ng/mL (95% CI: 0.93–2.88, Q = 182, df (Q): 6, I2 = 96.7%, P < 0.05). This study showed that malignant PEs were associated with higher levels of both pleural fluid and serum VEGF. VEGF appears to represent a promising biomarker for the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant PEs.

Abstract
Quitting smoking is the most important element in the therapeutic management of chronic respiratory diseases. Combining pharmacotherapy with behavioral support increases smoking cessation success rates. In addition, hospitalized smokers have increased motivation to quit. We investigated the efficacy on smoking cessation, of varenicline in combination with behavioral support, in smokers hospitalized due to (a) acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or (b) bronchial asthma attack, or (c) community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). The method used is prospective, open-label, preference-based, parallel group, 52-week trial. Patients chose the smoking cessation intervention they preferred: a standard regimen of varenicline combined with post-discharge advanced behavioral support (group A) or one private consultation session during hospitalization (group B). Follow-up phone calls were scheduled in weeks 1, 2, and 4 and months 3, 6, and 9. The final hospital visit was performed in week 52. Primary outcome was success rate defined as the percentage (%) of smoking abstinence at week 52 and secondary outcomes were (a) changes in quality of life (QoL) indicated by the scores on the Short Form 36 (SF36) questionnaire and (b) predictors of smoking abstinence investigated with multiple binary logistic regression. One hundred one patients were enrolled, 44 (43.6%) in group A and 57 (56.4%) in group B. Respective abstinence rates were 54.5% and 15.8% at week 12 and 52.3% and 14.0% at week 52. Scores on SF36 were statistically significantly increased in both groups. Predictors of smoking abstinence were varenicline (odds ratio (OR) 7.29; 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.15, 24.77; p = 0.001), age (OR 1.07; 95%CI 1.00, 1.15; p = 0.042), Fagerstrom score (OR 0.37; 95%CI 0.20, 0.68; p = 0.001), SF36 domains “vitality” (OR 1.12; 95%CI 1.04, 1.21; p = 0.003), and “social functioning” (OR 0.95; 95%CI 0.90, 1.00; p = 0.041). Varenicline in combination with behavioral support resulted in high abstinence rates inpatients hospitalized for exacerbation of COPD, asthma attack, or CAP, and improved QoL.

IntroductionThe focus of Medical Anthropology is, among other things, the study of medicine as an expression of culture and involves the analysis of healing traditions, both “traditional” and biomedical.ObjectivesGreek Gypsies who have their own habitus, language, and culture.Aims The discussion of treatment options that gypsies have or seek in order to address critical life situations outside a biomedical context.MethodsField research with interviews and observation.ResultsUsing Geertz's analytic approach of symbolic interpretation, this paper focuses on the mobilization and transformation of religious symbols in the clinical setting: how these “converse” with biomedicine and how they participate in the process of healing. Painful life experiences drive subjects to seek recourse in remedies outside the biomedical system. At the center of these experiences are thought to be attacks from the “evil eye.” According to the subjects’ worldview, all people are potential victims of the evil eye. A person's glance can provoke the injury, illness, mental illness or even death of another. Consequently, there is a hierarchy of therapeutic choices in which first preference is given to their own means for addressing a situation—only in the case of failure do they turn to specialists.ConclusionsThe beliefs of the subjects are strongly influenced by their worldview, a historically inherited model of health and healing that, unlike the biomedical model, expresses a belief that ailments are successfully cured “wıth God”.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a highly aggressive tumor primarily associated with asbestos exposure. Early detection of MPM is restricted by the long latency period until clinical presentation, the ineffectiveness of imaging techniques in early stage detection and the lack of non-invasive biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity. In this study we used transcriptome data mining in order to determine which CLAUDIN (CLDN) genes are differentially expressed in MPM as compared to controls. Using the same approach we identified the interactome of the differentially expressed CLDN genes and assessed their expression profile. Subsequently, we evaluated the effect of tumor histology, asbestos exposure, CDKN2A deletion status, and gender on the gene expression level of the claudin interactome. We found that 5 out of 15 studied CLDNs (4, 5, 8, 10, 15) and 4 out of 27 available interactors (S100B, SHBG, CDH5, CXCL8) were differentially expressed in MPM specimens vs. healthy tissues. The genes encoding the CLDN-15 and S100B proteins present differences in their expression profile between the three histological subtypes of MPM. Moreover, CLDN-15 is significantly under-expressed in the cohort of patients with previous history of asbestos exposure. CLDN-15 was also found significantly underexpressed in patients lacking the CDKN2A gene. These results warrant the detailed in vitro investigation of the role of CDLN-15 in the pathobiology of MPM.

Abstract
Nanoparticles have been implicated in the development of pleural effusions in exposed factory workers while in experimental animal studies it has been shown that they induce inflammation, fibrosis and carcinogenesis in the pleura. The scope of this study was to investigate the direct effects of silver nanoparticles exposure on the membrane permeability of sheep parietal pleura, of primary sheep pleural cell monolayers and on a human mesothelial cell line. Our findings suggest that acute (30min) exposure increases the pleural permeability ex vivo, while longer (24h) exposure in vivo leads to late decrease of the pleural cell monolayers permeability.

Abstract
IntroductionUse of the Internet lately has significantly been increased worldwide. The time users spend browsing the Internet is constantly increased resulting to serious consequences incurred in personal, professional and social life.AimThe purpose was to explore whether the economic crisis is affecting the use and addiction to Internet, whether the economic crisis is a risk factor in the appearance of addiction to the Internet and if the occupation and the existence of extra-curricular activities act as barriers to the development of addiction to the Internet on students.MethodsA questionnaire was prepared based on the diagnostic tool IAT (Internet Addiction Test). The survey was conducted in June of 2014 on 632 students.ResultIt was found that 6.2% of the sample population has moderately addictive behavior and 0.5% has a serious addiction. Addiction levels to the Internet are affected by someone working while studying and his monthly income, by daily time spent by the student in activities besides school, by the time spent daily on the Internet and by the operations mostly used. Also found that the risk of developing Internet addiction is higher among students who said they had difficulty paying their bills and Internet subscription and to those who due to economic crisis would stop all their activities in order to obtain money.ConclusionsThe economic crisis is a factor that affects on Internet addiction and occupation and activities may act as a deterrent to the emergence of the phenomenon.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive cancer. MPM cells express aquaporin-1 (AQP1) that in other cancers has been shown to participate in the tumor metastasis processes. However, in MPM patients AQP1 overexpression is an independent prognostic factor favoring survival. In this study we aimed at evaluating the role of AQP1 in cell adhesion, migration, and tumor sphere formation in nonmalignant mesothelial cells (MeT-5A) and in epithelioid (M14K) and sarcomatoid (ZL34) MPM cell lines. We used fibronectin (FN) or homologous cell-derived extracellular martrix (ECM) substratum to investigate the role of AQP1 in these experimental phenotypes, inhibiting AQP1 by 10(-5) M mercury chloride (MC). Deposited ECM during cell culture exhibited significant concentration differences among cell types. ZL34 cell adhesion was significantly higher than MeT-5A or M14K cells on FN and ECM. MeT-5A and M14K cell adhesion on FN was sensitive to AQP1 inhibition, whereas AQP1 inhibition on ECM was limited to M14K cells. Wound healing in ZL34 cells was significantly higher than MeT-5A and M14K cells on FN and ECM. AQP1 inhibition significantly lowered cell migration in ZL34 cells on FN and ECM. Sphere formation was not dependent on FN or ECM in the media. AQP1 inhibition in FN media reduced sphere formation in M14K cells, whereas, in ECM, all three cell types were sensitive to AQP1 inhibition.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to assess the differential gene expression of Parkinson protein 7 (PARK7) interactome in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) using data mining techniques to identify novel candidate genes that may play a role in the pathogenicity of MPM. We constructed the PARK7 interactome using the ConsensusPathDB database. We then interrogated the Oncomine Cancer Microarray database using the Gordon Mesothelioma Study, for differential gene expression of the PARK7 interactome. In ConsensusPathDB, 38 protein interactors of PARK7 were identified. In the Gordon Mesothelioma Study, 34 of them were assessed out of which SUMO1, UBC3, KIAA0101, HDAC2, DAXX, RBBP4, BBS1, NONO, RBBP7, HTRA2, and STUB1 were significantly overexpressed whereas TRAF6 and MTA2 were significantly underexpressed in MPM patients (network 2). Furthermore, Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that MPM patients with high BBS1 expression had a median overall survival of 16.5 vs. 8.7 mo of those that had low expression. For validation purposes, we performed a meta-analysis in Oncomine database in five sarcoma datasets. Eight network 2 genes (KIAA0101, HDAC2, SUMO1, RBBP4, NONO, RBBP7, HTRA2, and MTA2) were significantly differentially expressed in an array of 18 different sarcoma types. Finally, Gene Ontology annotation enrichment analysis revealed significant roles of the PARK7 interactome in NuRD, CHD, and SWI/SNF protein complexes. In conclusion, we identified 13 novel genes differentially expressed in MPM, never reported before. Among them, BBS1 emerged as a novel predictor of overall survival in MPM. Finally, we identified that PARK7 interactome is involved in novel pathways pertinent in MPM disease.

Abstract
The pericardium is one of the serosal cavities of the mammals. It consists of two anatomical structures closely connected, an external sac of fibrous connective tissue, that is called fibrous pericardium and an internal that is called serous pericardium coating the internal surface of the fibrous pericardium (parietal layer) and the heart (visceral layer) forming the pericardial space. Between these two layers a small amount of fluid exists that is called pericardial fluid. The pericardial fluid is a product of ultrafiltration and is considered to be drained by lymphatic capillary bed mainly. Under normal conditions it provides lubrication during heart beating while the mesothelial cells that line the membrane may also have a role in the absorption of the pericardial fluid along with the pericardial lymphatics. Here, we provide a review of the the current literature regarding the physiology of the pericardial space and the regulation of pericardial fluid turnover and highlight the areas that need to be further investigated.

Abstract
Mesothelium is an important part of the peritoneal barrier for water and ion transport, essential for effective peritoneal dialysis (PD). Peritoneal fibrosis has been associated with PD treatment failure. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a potent vasoactive peptide, involved in pathologic fibrotic processes. Its action is mediated mainly by endothelin type A (ETA ) and type B (ETB ) receptors. The aim of this study was to investigate, by Ussing chamber experiments, the effect of ET-1 on the transmesothelial electrical resistance (RTM ) of the isolated visceral sheep peritoneum. Intact sheets of visceral peritoneum were obtained from 40 adult sheep and mounted in Ussing-type chambers. ET-1 (10(-7) M), BQ-123 (ETA receptor antagonist; 10(-6) M), BQ-788 (ETB receptor antagonist; 10(-6) M), and their combinations were added on the apical and the basolateral side of the peritoneum. RTM was measured before and serially after addition of the substances, and changes were registered as percentage (ΔRTM %). RTM increased within 1 min after addition of ET-1 apically (ΔRTM 65.03 ± 15.87%; P < 0.05) or basolaterally (ΔRTM 85.5 ± 20.86%; P < 0.05). BQ-123 and BQ-788 and their combination significantly reduced (P < 0.05) the effect of ET-1 to a similar degree in all cases. These results clearly indicate that ET-1 reduces ionic permeability of the visceral sheep peritoneum in vitro. Additionally, it is obvious that this inhibitory effect is mediated through both ETA and ETB receptors.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this paper is to study the ionic permeability of the leptomeninges related to the effect of ouabain (sodium-potassium-ATPase inhibitor) and amiloride (epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) inhibitor) on the tissue, as well as identify the presence of ion channels. METHODS Cranial leptomeningeal samples from 26 adult sheep were isolated. Electrophysiological measurements were performed with Ussing system and transmembrane resistance values (R(TM) in Ω*cm(2)) obtained over time. Experiments were conducted with the application of ouabain 10(-3) M or amiloride 10(-5) M at the arachnoidal and pial sides. Immunohistochemical studies of leptomeningeal tissue were prepared with alpha-1 sodium-potassium-ATPase (ATP1A1), beta-ENaC, and delta-ENaC subunit antibodies. RESULTS The application of ouabain at the arachnoidal side raised the transmembrane resistance statistically significantly and thus decreased its ionic permeability. The addition of ouabain at the pial side led also to a significant but less profound increment in transmembrane resistance. The addition of amiloride at the arachnoidal or pial side did not produce any statistical significant change in the R(TM) from controls (p > 0.05). Immunohistochemistry confirmed the presence of the ATP1A1 and beta- and delta-ENaC subunits at the leptomeninges. CONCLUSIONS In summary, leptomeningeal tissue possesses sodium-potassium-ATPase and ENaC ion channels. The application of ouabain alters the ionic permeability of the leptomeninges thus reflecting the role of sodium-potassium-ATPase. Amiloride application did not alter the ionic permeability of leptomeninges possibly due to localization of ENaC channels towards the subarachnoid space, away from the experimental application sites. The above properties of the tissue could potentially be related to cerebrospinal fluid turnover at this interface.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) 2 and 9 are two gelatinase members which have been found elevated in exudative pleural effusions. In endothelial cells these MMPs increase paracellular permeability via the disruption of tight junction (TJ) proteins occludin and claudin. In the present study it was investigated if MMP2 and MMP9 alter permeability properties of the pleura tissue by degradation of TJ proteins in pleural mesothelium. RESULTS In the present study the transmesothelial resistance (RTM) of sheep pleura tissue was recorded in Ussing chambers after the addition of MMP2 or MMP9. Both enzymes reduced RTM of the pleura, implying an increase in pleural permeability. The localization and expression of TJ proteins, occludin and claudin-1, were assessed after incubation with MMPs by indirect immunofluorescence and western blot analysis. Our results revealed that incubation with MMPs did not alter neither proteins localization at cell periphery nor their expression. CONCLUSIONS MMP2 and MMP9 increase the permeability of sheep pleura and this finding suggests a role for MMPs in pleural fluid formation. Tight junction proteins remain intact after incubation with MMPs, contrary to previous studies which have shown TJ degradation by MMPs. Probably MMP2 and MMP9 augment pleural permeability via other mechanisms.

Abstract
Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical properties of the pleural mesothelial barrier and of the biological markers that facilitate or eliminate the passage of molecules through the pleura. Methods and Material: Pleural fluid samples from sixty-five patients with heart failure were analyzed. The biological markers studied were lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), adenosine deaminase (ADA), interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), -3 (MMP-3), -7(MMP-7), -8 (MMP-8) and -9 (MMP-9). Based on the pleural fluid/serum ratio, these molecules were divided into three groups: a) the LDH-like group with a pleural fluid/serum ratio between 0,4 and 0,8 (LDH, CEA, CuZnSOD, ADA, CRP, MMP-8), b) molecules with a pleural fluid/serum ratio less than 0,4 (MMP-7 and MMP-9) and c) molecules with a pleural fluid/serum ratio equal or above 1 (TNF-α, IL-6, MMP-2 and MMP-3). Results: No correlation between the molecular radius and the pleural fluid to serum ratio of the above biological markers was found. Conclusions: The molecular size is not a major determinant for the passage of molecules through the mesothelial barrier. Several other factors may influence the transport of the above molecules to pleural cavity, such as their charge and shape.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of hormones in the transport mechanisms of human fetal membranes in pregnancy is unclear. Estrogens are essential hormones in pregnancy and they play an important role in the ion transport via membranes. AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 17β-estradiol on transepithelial electrical resistance in the human amniochorion. MATERIAL AND METHODS Specimens of human fetal membranes were obtained. 17β-estradiol, tamoxifen and their combination were added in an Ussing chamber. Transepithelial resistance was measured before and after the addition of each solution. RESULTS An increase in transepithelial resistance was seen after the addition of estradiol to both sides of the membranes. The effect was rapid with a peak at the 1st min of application and dose-depended. Tamoxifen, caused a similar effect but smaller in magnitude and shorter in duration. Tamoxifen in combination with estradiol inhibited only in part the action of estradiol. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that estradiol induces a rapid increase of transepithelial resistance in human fetal membranes in vitro via a non-genomic pathway. It is possible those changes in transepithelial resistance play a role in the control of permeability of human amniochorion.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Histamine is involved in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases and regulates the permeability of different tissues. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of histamine on the electrophysiology of human parietal pleura and the underlying mechanisms involved. MATERIALS AND METHODS Pleural specimens were obtained from patients subjected to thoracic surgery and were mounted in Ussing chambers. Histamine solutions (1μM to 1mM) were applied in native and pretreated specimens with dimetindene maleate, cetirizine, ranitidine, amiloride and ouabain. Trans-mesothelial resistance was determined (R(TM)). RESULTS Histamine induced a rapid R(TM) increase on the mesothelial (p = 0.008) and a decrease on the interstitial surface (p = 0.029). This effect was dose-dependent and was totally abolished by dimetindene maleate, cetirizine and amiloride and partially by ranitidine and ouabain. CONCLUSIONS Histamine induces acute electrochemical changes in human pleura mainly via interaction with the H(1) and partially with the H(2) histamine receptors. It also interferes with trans-cellular permeability and therefore may participate in pleural fluid recycling.
