Tailoring raloxifene into single-component molecular crystals possessing multilevel stimuli-responsive room-temperature phosphorescence

Simultaneously achieving room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and multiple-stimuli responsiveness in a single-component system is of significance but remains challenging. Crystallization has been recognized to be a workable strategy to fulfill the above task. However, how the molecular packing mode affects the intersystem crossing and RTP lifetime concurrently remains unclear so far. Herein, four economic small-molecular compounds, analogues of the famous drug raloxifene (RALO), are facilely synthesized and further explored as neat single-component and stimuli-responsive RTP emitters via crystallization engineering. Thanks to their simple structures and high ease to crystallize, these raloxifene analogues function as models to clarify the important role of molecular packing in the RTP and stimuli-responsiveness properties. Thorough combination of the single-crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculations clearly manifests that the tight antiparallel molecular packing mode is the key point to their RTP behaviors. Interestingly, harnessing the controllable and reversible phase transitions of the two polymorphs of RALO-OAc driven by mechanical force, solvent vapor, and heat, a single-component multilevel stimuli-responsive platform with tunable emission color is established and further exploited for optical information encryption. This work would shed light on the rational design of multi-stimuli responsive RTP systems based on single-component organics.

Dynamic Near-Infrared Circularly Polarized Luminescence Encoded by Transient Supramolecular Chiral Assemblies

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is promising for applications in many fields. However, most systems involving CPL are within the visible range; near‒infrared (NIR) CPL‒active materials, especially those that exhibit high glum values and can be controlled spatially and temporally, are rare. Herein, dynamic NIR‒CPL with a glum value of 2.5[[EQUATION]]10‒2 was achieved through supramolecular coassembly and energy transfer strategies. The chiral assemblies formed by the coassembly between adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and a pyrene derivative exhibit a red CPL signal (glum of 10‒3). The further introduction of sulfo‒cyanine5 resulted in a cooperative energy transfer process, which not only aroused the NIR CPL but also increased the glum value to 10‒2. Temporal control of these chiral assemblies was realized by introducing alkaline phosphatase to fabricate a biomimetic enzyme‒catalyzed network, allowing the dynamic NIR CPL signal to be turned on. Based on these enzyme-regulated temporally controllable dynamic CPL-active chiral assemblies, a multilevel information encryption system was further developed. Our work provides a pioneering example for constructing dynamic NIR CPL materials holding the ability to perform temporal control via the supramolecular assembly strategy, which is expected to aid in the design of supramolecular complex systems that more closely resemble natural biological systems.

A Rational Design of Bio-Derived Disulfide CANs for Wearable Capacitive Pressure Sensor

Classic approaches to integrate flexible capacitive sensor performance are to on-demand microstructuring dielectric layers and to adjust dielectric material compositions via the introduction of insoluble carbon additives (to increase sensitivity) or dynamic interactions (to achieve self-healing). However, the sensor's enhanced performances often come with increased material complexity, discouraging its circular economy. Herein, a new intrinsic self-healable, closed-loop recyclable dielectric layer material, a fully nature-derived dynamic covalent poly(disulfide) decorated with rich H bonding and metal-catechol complexations is introduced. The polymer network possesses a mechanically ductile character with an Arrhenius-type temperature-dependent viscoelasticity. The assembled capacitive pressure sensor is able to achieve a sensitivity of up to 9.26 kPa-1, fast response/recovery time of 32/24 ms, and can deliver consistent signals of continuous consecutive cycles even after being self-healed or closed-loop recycled for real-time detection of human motions. This is expected to be of high interest for current capacitive sensing research to move toward a life-like, high performance, and circular economy direction.

Converting inorganic sulfur into degradable thermoplastics and adhesives by copolymerization with cyclic disulfides

Converting elementary sulfur into sulfur-rich polymers provides a sustainable strategy to replace fossil-fuel-based plastics. However, the low ring strain of eight-membered rings, i.e., S8 monomers, compromises their ring-opening polymerization (ROP) due to lack of an enthalpic driving force and as a consequence, poly(sulfur) is inherently unstable. Here we report that copolymerization with cyclic disulfides, e.g., 1,2-dithiolanes, can enable a simple and energy-saving way to convert elementary sulfur into sulfur-rich thermoplastics. The key strategy is to combine two types of ROP-both mediated by disulfide bond exchange-to tackle the thermodynamic instability of poly(sulfur). Meanwhile, the readily modifiable sidechain of the cyclic disulfides provides chemical space to engineer the mechanical properties and dynamic functions over a large range, e.g., self-repairing ability and degradability. Thus, this simple and robust system is expected to be a starting point for the organic transformation of inorganic sulfur toward sulfur-rich functional and green plastics.

Mechanically interlocked [c2]daisy chain backbone enabling advanced shape-memory polymeric materials

The incorporation of mechanically interlocked structures into polymer backbones has been shown to confer remarkable functionalities to materials. In this work, a [c2]daisy chain unit based on dibenzo-24-crown-8 is covalently embedded into the backbone of a polymer network, resulting in a synthetic material possessing remarkable shape-memory properties under thermal control. By decoupling the molecular structure into three control groups, we demonstrate the essential role of the [c2]daisy chain crosslinks in driving the shape memory function. The mechanically interlocked topology is found to be an essential element for the increase of glass transition temperature and consequent gain of shape memory function. The supramolecular host-guest interactions within the [c2]daisy chain topology not only ensure robust mechanical strength and good network stability of the polymer, but also impart the shape memory polymer with remarkable shape recovery properties and fatigue resistance ability. The incorporation of the [c2]daisy chain unit as a building block has the potential to lay the groundwork for the development of a wide range of shape-memory polymer materials.

Exploring the Depth-Dependent Microviscosity inside a Micelle Using Butterfly-Motion-Based Fluorescent Probes

The viscosity distribution of micellar interiors from the very center to the outer surface is dramatically varied, which has been distinguished in theoretical models, yet it remains highly challenging to quantify this issue experimentally. Herein, a series of fluorophore-substituted surfactants DPAC-Fn (n = 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15) are developed by functionalizing the different alkyl-trimethylammonium bromides with the butterfly motion-based viscosity sensor, N,N'-diphenyl-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC). The immersion depth of DPAC units of DPAC-Fn in cetrimonium bromide (C16TAB) micelles depends on the alkyl chain lengths n. From deep (n = 15) to shallow (n = 3), DPAC-Fn in C16TAB micelles exhibits efficient viscosity-sensitive dynamic multicolor emissions. With external standards for quantification, the viscosity distribution inside a C16TAB micelle with the size of ∼4 nm is changed seriously from high viscosity (∼190 Pa s) in the core center to low viscosity (∼1 Pa s) near the outer surface. This work provides a tailored approach for powerful micelle tools to explore the depth-dependent microviscosity of micellar interiors.

Motorized Photomodulator: Making A Non-photoresponsive Supramolecular Gel Switchable by Light

Introducing photo-responsive molecules offers an attractive approach for remote and selective control and dynamic manipulation of material properties. However, it remains highly challenging how to use a minimal amount of photo-responsive units to optically modulate materials that are inherently inert to light irradiation. Here we show the application of a light-driven rotary molecular motor as a "motorized photo-modulator" to endow a typical H-bond-based gel system with the ability to respond to light irradiation and create a reversible sol-gel transition. The key molecular design feature is the introduction of a minimal amount (2 mol %) of molecular motors into the supramolecular network as photo-switchable non-covalent crosslinkers. Advantage is taken of the subtle interplay of the large geometry change during photo-isomerization of the molecular motor guest and the dynamic nature of a supramolecular gel host system. As a result, a tiny amount of molecular motors is enough to switch the mechanical modulus of the entire supramolecular systems. This study proves the concept of designing photo-responsive materials with minimum use of non-covalent light-absorbing units.

Near-infrared AIEgens with high singlet-oxygen yields for mitochondria-specific imaging and antitumor photodynamic therapy

AIE-active photosensitizers (PSs) are promising for antitumor therapy due to their advantages of aggregation-promoted photosensitizing properties and outstanding imaging ability. High singlet-oxygen (¹O₂) yield, near-infrared (NIR) emission, and organelle specificity are vital parameters to PSs for biomedical applications. Herein, three AIE-active PSs with D-π-A structures are rationally designed to realize efficient ¹O₂ generation, by reducing the electron-hole distribution overlap, enlarging the difference on the electron-cloud distribution at the HOMO and LUMO, and decreasing the ΔE_ST. The design principle has been expounded with the aid of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations and the analysis of electron-hole distributions. The ¹O₂ quantum yields of AIE-PSs developed here can be up to 6.8 times that of the commercial photosensitizer Rose Bengal under white-light irradiation, thus among the ones with the highest ¹O₂ quantum yields reported so far. Moreover, the NIR AIE-PSs show mitochondria-targeting capability, low dark cytotoxicity but superb photo-cytotoxicity, and satisfactory biocompatibility. The in vivo experimental results demonstrate good antitumor efficacy for the mouse tumour model. Therefore, the present work will shed light on the development of more high-performance AIE-PSs with high PDT efficiency.

Reversible Inversion of Circularly Polarized Luminescence in a Coassembly Supramolecular Structure with Achiral Sulforhodamine B Dyes

The dynamic control of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has far-reaching significance in optoelectronics, information storage, and data encryption. Herein, we reported the reversible inversion of CPL in a coassembly supramolecular system consisting of chiral molecules L4, which contain two positively charged viologen units, and achiral ionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) by introducing achiral sulforhodamine B (SRB) dye molecules. The chirality of CPL in the coassemblies can be efficiently regulated and inverted by simply adjusting the amount of SRB. A series of experimental characterization, including optical spectroscopy, electron microscope, ¹H NMR, and X-ray scattering measurements, suggested that SRB could coassemble with L4/SDS to establish a new stable L4/SDS/SRB supramolecular structure through electrostatic interactions. Moreover, the negative-sign CPL could revert to the positive-sign CPL if titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles were used to decompose SRB molecules. The evolution of the CPL inversion process could be cycled at least 5 times without a significant decline in CPL signals when SRB was refueled to the system. Our results provide a facile approach to dynamically regulating the handedness of CPL in a multiple-component supramolecular system via achiral species.

Sequential Multistep Excited-State Structural Transformations in N,N'-Diphenyl-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine Fluorophores

We demonstrate that a single polycyclic π-scaffold can undergo sequential multistep excited-state structural evolution along the bent, planar, and twisted conformers, which coexist to produce intrinsic multiple fluorescence emissions in room-temperature solution. By installing a methyl or trifluoromethyl group on the ortho-site of N,N'-diphenyl-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC), the enhanced steric effects change the fluorescence emission of DPAC from a dominant red band to well-resolved triple bands. The ultra-broadband triple emissions of ortho-substituted DPACs range from ~350 to ~850 nm, which is unprecedented for small fluorophores with molecular weight of < 500. Ultrafast spectroscopy and theoretical calculations clearly reveal that the above dramatic changes originate from the influence of steric hindrance on the shape of excited state potential energy surface (S1 PES). Compared to the steep S1 PES of parental DPAC, introduction of ortho-substituent is shown to make the path of structural evolution in S1 wider and flatter, so the ortho-substituted derivatives exhibit slower structural transformations from bent to planar and then to twisted forms, yielding intrinsic triple emission. The results provide the proof of concept that the bent, planar, and twisted emissive states can coexist in the same S1 PES, which greatly expand the fundamental understanding of the excited-state structural relaxation.

Acid-catalyzed Disulfide-mediated Reversible Polymerization for Recyclable Dynamic Covalent Materials

Poly(1,2-dithiolane)s are a family of intrinsically recyclable polymers due to their dynamic covalent disulfide linkages. Despite the common use of thiolate-initiated anionic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) under basic condition, cationic ROP is still not exploited. Here we report that disulfide bond can act as a proton acceptor, being protonated by acids to form sulfonium cations, which can efficiently initiate the ROP of 1,2-dithiolanes and result in high-molecular-weight (over 1000 kDa) poly(disulfide)s. The reaction can be triggered by adding catalytic amounts of acids and non-coordinating anion salts, and completed in few minutes at room temperature. The acidic conditions allow the applicability for acidic monomers. Importantly, the reaction condition can be under open air without inert protection, enabling the nearly quantitative chemical recycling from bulk materials to original monomers.

A Dynamic Supramolecular H-bonding Network with Orthogonally Tunable Clusteroluminescence

Enabling dynamically tunable emissive systems offers opportunities for constructing smart materials. Clusteroluminescence, as unconventional luminescence, has attracted increasing attention in both fundamental and applied sciences. Herein, we report a supramolecular poly(disulfides) network with tunable clusteroluminescence. The reticular H-bonds synergize the rigidity and mobility of dynamic networks, and endow the resulting materials with mechanical adaptivity and robustness, simultaneously enabling efficient clusteroluminescence and phosphorescence at 77 K. Orthogonally tunable luminescence are achieved in two manners, i.e., slow backbone disulfide exchange and fast side-chain metal coordination. Further exploration of the reprocessability and chemical closed-loop recycling of intrinsic dynamic networks for sustainable materials is feasible. We foresee that the synergistic strategy of dynamic chemistry offers a novel pathway and potential opportunities for smart emissive materials.

Dynamic Timing Control of Molecular Photoluminescent Systems

Dynamic control of molecular photoluminescence offers chemical solutions to designing functional emissive materials. Although stimuli-switchable molecular luminescent systems are well established, how to encode these dynamic emissive systems with a "timing" feature, that is, time-dependent luminescent properties, remains challenging. This Concept aims to summarize the design principles of dynamic timing molecular photoluminescent systems by discussing the state-of-the-art of this topic and the shaping of fabrication strategies at both the molecular and supramolecular levels. An outlook and perspectives are given to outline the future opportunities and challenges in the rational design and potential applications of these smart emissive systems.

A Chemically Recyclable Crosslinked Polymer Network Enabled by Orthogonal Dynamic Covalent Chemistry

Chemical recycling of synthetic polymers offers a solution for developing sustainable plastics and materials. Here we show that two types of dynamic covalent chemistry can be orthogonalized in a solvent-free polymer network and thus enable a chemically recyclable crosslinked material. Using a simple acylhydrazine-based 1,2-dithiolane as the starting material, the disulfide-mediated reversible polymerization and acylhydrazone-based dynamic covalent crosslinking can be combined in a one-pot solvent-free reaction, resulting in mechanically robust, tough, and processable crosslinked materials. The dynamic covalent bonds in both backbones and crosslinkers endow the network with depolymerization capability under mild conditions and, importantly, virgin-quality monomers can be recovered and separated. This proof-of-concept study show opportunities to design chemically recyclable materials based on the dynamic chemistry toolbox.

Robust and dynamic underwater adhesives enabled by catechol-functionalized poly(disulfides) network

Developing molecular approaches to the creation of robust and water-resistant adhesive materials promotes fundamental understanding of interfacial adhesion mechanisms as well as future applications of biomedical adhesive materials. Here, we present a simple and robust strategy that combines natural thioctic acid and mussel-inspired iron-catechol complexes to enable ultra-strong adhesive materials that can be used underwater and simultaneously exhibit unprecedented high adhesion strength on diverse surfaces. Our experimental results show that the robust crosslinking interaction of the iron-catechol complexes as well as high-density hydrogen bonding are responsible for the ultra-high interfacial adhesion strength. The embedding effect of the hydrophobic solvent-free network of poly(disulfides) further enhances the water-resistance. The dynamic covalent poly(disulfides) network also makes the resulting materials reconfigurable, thus enabling multiple reusability via repeated heating and cooling. This molecule-engineering strategy offers a general and versatile solution to the design and construction of dynamic supramolecular adhesive materials.

A Light-Driven Molecular Machine Controls K+ Channel Transport and Induces Cancer Cell Apoptosis

The design of artificial ion channels with high activity, selectivity and gating function is challenging. Herein, we designed the light-driven motor molecule MC2, which provides new design criteria to overcome these challenges. MC2 forms a selective K⁺ channel through a single molecular transmembrane mechanism, and the light-driven rotary motion significantly accelerates ion transport, which endows the irradiated motor molecule with excellent cytotoxicity and cancer cell selectivity. Mechanistic studies reveal that the rotary motion of MC2 promotes K⁺ efflux, generates reactive oxygen species and eventually activates caspase-3-dependent apoptosis in cancer cells. Combined with the spatiotemporally controllable advantages of light, we believe this strategy can be exploited in the structural design and application of next-generation synthetic cation transporters for the treatment of cancer and other diseases.

Photoconductance from the Bent-to-Planar Photocycle between Ground and Excited States in Single-Molecule Junctions

Single-molecule conductance measurements for 9,14-diphenyl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC) may offer unique insight into the bent-to-planar photocycle between the ground and excited states. Herein, we employ DPAC derivative DPAC-SMe as the molecular prototype to fabricate single-molecule junctions using the scanning tunneling microscope break junction technique and explore photoconductance dependence on the excited-state structural/electronic changes. We find up to ∼200% conductance enhancement of DPAC-SMe under continuous 340 nm light irradiation than that without irradiation, while photoconductance disappears in the case where structural evolution of the DPAC-SMe is halted through macrocyclization. The in situ conductance modulation as pulsed 340 nm light irradiation is monitored in the DPAC-SMe-based junctions alone, suggesting that the photoconductance of DPAC-SMe stems from photoinduced intramolecular planarization. Theoretical calculations reveal that the photoinduced structural evolution brings about a significant redistribution of the electron cloud density, which leads to the appearance of Fano resonance, resulting in enhanced conductance through the DPAC-SMe-fabricated junctions. This work provides evidence of bent-to-planar photocycle-induced conductance differences at the single-molecule level, offering a tailored approach for tuning the charge transport characteristics of organic photoelectronic devices.

Engineering Shapes and Sizes of Molecular Crystals to Achieve Versatile Photomechanical Behaviors

Photomechanical molecular crystals, which can directly convert light energy to mechanical energy and do mechanical work at different scales, are promising for future photoactuators. However, one of the bottlenecks in this area is how to harness the crystal shapes and sizes to achieve desired photomechanical motions and behaviors for versatile functionalities. To date, numerous techniques and strategies have been explored and developed to overcome this obstacle. In this perspective, we will summarize the progress recently made on the crystal shape and size engineering platform. Then we briefly touch on possible applications of photomechanical molecular crystals by introducing some built photoresponsive implementations. Finally, we will identify some fundamental challenges and suggestions for future applications.

Engineering Photomechanical Molecular Crystals to Achieve Extraordinary Expansion Based on Solid-State [2 + 2] Photocycloaddition

Photomechanical molecular crystals are promising candidates for photoactuators and can potentially be implemented as smart materials in various fields. Here, we synthesized a new molecular crystal, (E)-3-(naphthalen-1-yl)acrylaldehyde malononitrile ((E)-NAAM), that can undergo a solid-state [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction under visible light (≥400 nm) illumination. (E)-NAAM microcrystals containing symmetric twinned sealed cavities were prepared using a surfactant-mediated crystal seeded growth method. When exposed to light, the hollow microcrystals exhibited robust photomechanical motions, including bending and dramatic directional expansion of up to 43.1% elongation of the original crystal length before fragmentation due to the photosalient effect. The sealed cavities inside the microcrystals could store different aqueous dye solutions for approximately one month and release the solutions instantly upon light irradiation. A unique slow-fast-slow crystal elongation kinematic process was observed, suggesting significant molecular rearrangements during the illumination period, leading to an average anisotropic crystal elongation of 37.0% (±3.8%). The significant molecular structure and geometry changes accompanying the photocycloaddition reaction, which propels photochemistry to nearly 100% completion, also facilitate photomechanical crystal expansion. Our results provide a possible way to rationally design molecular structures and engineer crystal morphologies to promote more interesting photomechanical behaviors.

Self-Evolution of High Mechanical Strength Dry-Network Polythiourethane Thermosets into Neat Macroscopic Hollow Structures

Organism-inspired hollow structures are attracting increasing interest for the construction of various bionic functional hollow materials. Next-generation self-evolution hollow materials tend to combine simple synthesis, high mechanical strength, and regular shape. In this study, we designed and synthesized a novel dry-network polythiourethane thermoset with excellent mechanical performance. The polymer film could evolve into a neat and well-organized object with a macroscopic hollow interior structure after being immersed in an aqueous NaOH solution. The self-evolution hollow structure originated from a hydrogen-bonded polymer network, which was later transformed into a network bearing both hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds. The swelling and thickness growth of this material could be controlled by the NaOH concentration and the immersion time. This unique self-evolution behavior was further utilized to produce a series of macroscopic 3D hollow-containing molds, which could be potentially applied in the production of smart materials.

Interplay of Steric Effects and Aromaticity Reversals to Expand the Structural/Electronic Responses of Dihydrophenazines

To gain insights into the coupling of conformational and electronic variables, we exploited steric hindrance to modulate a polycyclic skeleton with a bent conformation in the S₀ state and a twisted conformation in the S₁ state under the guidance of photoexcited aromaticity reversals. Polycyclic 5,10-dihydrophenazine (DHP) adopted a bent structure in S₀ but involved a bent-to-planar transformation in S₁ due to the excited-state aromaticity of the 8π-electron central ring. The N,N'-locations and 1,4,6,9-sites of the DHP skeleton provided a versatile chemical handle for fine-tuning intramolecular steric hindrance. Specifically, N,N'-diphenyl-5,10-dihydrophenazine (DPP-00) and its derivatives DPP-10-DPP-22 were synthesized with different numbers of methyl groups on the 1,4,6,9-sites. X-ray crystal analyses suggested that the DHP skeletons of DPP-00-DPP-22 had more bending configurations along the N···N axis with an increase in the number of methyl groups. Following the bending-promoted interruption of π-conjugation, the absorption spectra of DPP-00-DPP-22 significantly blue-shifted from 416 to 324 nm. By contrast, the emission bands exhibited a reverse shift to longer wavelengths from 459 to 584 nm as the number of methyl substituents increased. Theoretical calculations revealed that introducing methyl groups caused the planar DHP skeleton in S₁ to further twist along the N···N axis, resulting in a twisted high-strain conformation. The greater Stokes shift of the more steric-hindered structure can be attributed to the release of larger strain and aromatic stabilization energy. This research highlighted the potential promise associated with the interplay of steric effects and aromaticity reversals in a single fluorophore.

Dynamic Timing Control over Multicolor Molecular Emission by Temporal Chemical Locking

Dynamic control over molecular emission, especially in a time-dependent manner, holds great promise for the development of smart luminescent materials. Here we report a series of dynamic multicolor fluorescent systems based on the time-encoded locking and unlocking of individual vibrational emissive units. The intramolecular cyclization reaction driven by adding chemical fuel acts as a chemical lock to decrease the conformational freedom of the emissive units, thus varying the fluorescence wavelength, while the resulting chemically locked state can be automatically unlocked by the hydrolysis reaction with water molecules. The dynamic molecular system can be driven by adding chemical fuels for multiple times. The emission wavelength and lifetime of the locking states can be readily controlled by elaborating the molecular structures, indicating this strategy as a robust and versatile way to modulate multi-color molecular emission in a time-encoded manner.

Disulfide-Mediated Reversible Polymerization toward Intrinsically Dynamic Smart Materials

The development of a dynamic chemistry toolbox to endow materials dynamic behavior has been key to the rational design of future smart materials. The rise of supramolecular and dynamic covalent chemistry offers many approaches to the construction of dynamic polymers and materials that can adapt, respond, repair, and recycle. Within this toolbox, the building blocks based on 1,2-dithiolanes have become an important scaffold, featuring their reversible polymerization mediated by dynamic covalent disulfide bonds, which enables a unique class of dynamic materials at the intersection of supramolecular polymers and adaptable covalent networks. This Perspective aims to explore the dynamic chemistry of 1,2-dithiolanes as a versatile structural unit for the design of smart materials by summarizing the state of the art as well as providing an overview of the fundamental challenges involved in this research area and its potential future directions.

Stereodivergent Chirality Transfer by Noncovalent Control of Disulfide Bonds

Controlling dynamic stereochemistry is an important challenge, as it is not only inherent to protein structure and function but often governs supramolecular systems and self-assembly. Typically, disulfide bonds exhibit stereodivergent behavior in proteins; however, how chiral information is transmitted to disulfide bonds remains unclear. Here, we report that hydrogen bonds are essential in the control of disulfide chirality and enable stereodivergent chirality transfer. The formation of S–S···H–N hydrogen bonds in solution can drive conformational adaption to allow intramolecular chirality transfer, while the formation of C=O···H–N hydrogen bonds results in supramolecular chirality transfer to form antiparallel helically self-assembled solid-state architectures. The dependence on the structural information encoded in the homochiral amino acid building blocks reveals the remarkable dynamic stereochemical space accessible through noncovalent chirality transmission.

Acylhydrazine-based reticular hydrogen bonds enable robust, tough, and dynamic supramolecular materials

Supramolecular materials are widely recognized among the most promising candidates for future generations of sustainable plastics because of their dynamic functions. However, the weak noncovalent cross-links that endow dynamic properties usually trade off materials' mechanical robustness. Here, we present the discovery of a simple and robust supramolecular cross-linking strategy based on acylhydrazine units, which can hierarchically cross-link the solvent-free network of poly(disulfides) by forming unique reticular hydrogen bonds, enabling the conversion of soft into stiff dynamic material. The resulting supramolecular materials exhibit increase in stiffness exceeding two to three orders of magnitude compared to those based on the hydrogen-bonding network of analogous carboxylic acids, simultaneously preserving the repairability, malleability, and recyclability of the materials. The materials also show high adhesion strength on various surfaces while allowing multiple surface attachment cycles without fatigue, illustrating a viable approach how robustness and dynamics can be merged in future material design.

Hysteresis Nanoarchitectonics with Chiral Gel Fibers and Achiral Gold Nanospheres for Reversible Chiral Inversion

Intelligent control over the handedness of circular dichroism (CD) is of special significance in self-organized biological and artificial systems. Herein, we report a chiral organic molecule (R1) containing a disulfide unit self-assembles into M-type helical fibers gels, which undergoes chirality inversion by incorporating gold nanospheres due to the formation of Au-S bonds between R1 and gold nanospheres. Upon heating at 80oC, the aggregation of gold nanospheres results in a disappearance of the Au-S bond, allowing the reversible switching back to M-type helical fibers. The original chirality of M-type fibers could also be retained by adding anisotropic gold nanorods. A series of characterization methods, involving CD, Raman, Infrared spectroscopy, electric microscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements were used to investigate the mechanism of chiral evolutions. Our results provide a facile way of fabricating hysteresis nanoarchitectonics to achieve dynamic supramolecular chirality using inorganic metallic nanoparticles.

Intrinsically Photopolymerizable Dynamic Polymers Derived from a Natural Small Molecule

Developing photopolymerizable polymeric materials offers many opportunities to process materials in a remote and controllable manner. However, most photopolymerizable technologies require the external introduction of photoabsorbing units, whereas designing intrinsically photopolymerizable polymers is still highly challenging. Here, we report that a natural small-molecule disulfide, thioctic acid, can be directly transformed into a poly(disulfides) network under the irradiation of visible light without any external additives. The resulting polymer network exhibits optical transparency, mechanical stretchability and toughness, ambient self-healing ability, and especially strong adhesive ability to different surfaces. The dynamic covalent backbones of the poly(disulfides) endow the depolymerization ability to recycle the material in a closed-loop manner. We foresee that this facile and robust photopolymerization system is of great promise toward low-cost and high-performance photocuring coatings and adhesives.

A Light-Operated Molecular Cable Car for Gated Ion Transport

Inspired by the nontrivial and controlled movements of molecular machines, we report an azobenzene-based molecular shuttle PR2, which can perform light-gated ion transport across lipid membranes. The amphiphilicity and membrane-spanning molecular length enable PR2 to insert into the bilayer membrane and efficiently transport K⁺ (EC₅₀ =4.1 μm) through the thermally driven stochastic shuttle motion of the crown ether ring along the axle. The significant difference in shuttling rate between trans-PR2 and cis-PR2 induced by molecular isomerization enables a light-gated ion transport, i.e., ON/OFF in situ regulation of transport activity and single-channel current. This work represents an example of using a photoswitchable molecular machine to realize gated ion transport, which demonstrates the value of molecular machines functioning in biomembranes.

Visible-Light-Driven Rotation of Molecular Motors in Discrete Supramolecular Metallacycles

The organization of molecular motors in supramolecular assemblies to allow the amplification and transmission of motion and collective action is an important step toward future responsive systems. Metal-coordination-driven directional self-assembly into supramolecular metallacycles provides a powerful strategy to position several motor units in larger structures with well-defined geometries. Herein, we present a pyridyl-modified molecular motor ligand (MPY) which upon coordination with geometrically distinct di-Pt(II) acceptors assembles into discrete metallacycles of different sizes and shapes. This coordination leads to a red-shift of the absorption bands of molecular motors, making these motorized metallacycles responsive to visible light. Photochemical and thermal isomerization experiments demonstrated that the light-driven rotation of the motors in the metallacycles is similar to that in free MPY in solution. CD studies show that the helicity inversions associated with each isomerization step in the rotary cycle are preserved. To explore collective motion, the trimeric motor-containing metallacycle was aggregated with heparin through multiple electrostatic interactions, to construct a multi-component hierarchical system. SEM, TEM, and DLS measurements revealed that the photo- and thermal-responsive molecular motor units enabled selective manipulation of the secondary supramolecular aggregation process without dissociating the primary metallacycle structures. These visible-light-responsive metallacycles, with intrinsic multiple rotary motors, offer prospects for cooperative operations, dynamic hierarchical self-assembled systems, and adaptive materials.

An Ultrastrong and Highly Stretchable Polyurethane Elastomer Enabled by a Zipper-Like Ring-Sliding Effect

Elastomers with excellent mechanical properties are in substantial demand for various applications, but there is always a tradeoff between their mechanical strength and stretchability. For example, partially replacing strong covalent crosslinking by weak sacrificial bonds can enhance the stretchability but also usually decreases the mechanical strength. To surmount this inherent tradeoff, a supramolecular strategy of introducing a zipper-like sliding-ring mechanism in a hydrogen-bond-crosslinked polyurethane network is proposed. A very small amount (0.5 mol%) of an external additive (pseudo[2]rotaxane crosslinker) can dramatically increase both the mechanical strength and elongation of this polyurethane network by nearly one order of magnitude. Based on the investigation of the relationship between molecular structure and mechanical properties, this enhancement is attributable to a unique molecular-level zipper-like ring-sliding motion, which efficiently dissipates mechanical work in the solvent-free network. This research not only provides a distinct and general strategy for the construction of high-performance elastomers but also paves the way for the practical application of artificial molecular machines toward solvent-free polyurethane networks.

Photo-Powered Collapse of Supramolecular Polymers Based on an Overcrowded Alkene Switch

A supramolecular polymer was constructed from a light-driven overcrowded alkene switch modified with two alkylated gallic acid amide pendants (MSP-1). Upon UV irradiation, stable MSP-1 isomerized into unstable MSP-2, which induced the effective collapse of well-defined cross-linked supramolecular polymers, and the reassembly can be realized by aging at low temperature.

Assembling a Natural Small Molecule into a Supramolecular Network with High Structural Order and Dynamic Functions

Programming the hierarchical self-assembly of small molecules has been a fundamental topic of great significance in biological systems and artificial supramolecular systems. Precise and highly programmed self-assembly can produce supramolecular architectures with distinct structural features. However, it still remains a challenge how to precisely control the self-assembly pathway in a desirable way by introducing abundant structural information into a limited molecular backbone. Here we disclose a strategy that directs the hierarchical self-assembly of sodium thioctate, a small molecule of biological origin, into a highly ordered supramolecular layered network. By combining the unique dynamic covalent ring-opening-polymerization of sodium thioctate and an evaporation-induced interfacial confinement effect, we precisely direct the dynamic supramolecular self-assembly of this simple small molecule in a scheduled hierarchical pathway, resulting in a layered structure with long-range order at both macroscopic and molecular scales, which is revealed by small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering technologies. The resulting supramolecular layers are found to be able to bind water molecules as structural water, which works as an interlayer lubricant to modulate the material properties, such as mechanical performance, self-healing capability, and actuating function. Analogous to many reversibly self-assembled biological systems, the highly dynamic polymeric network can be degraded into monomers and reformed by a water-mediated route, exhibiting full recyclability in a facile, mild, and environmentally friendly way. This approach for assembling commercial small molecules into structurally complex materials paves the way for low-cost functional supramolecular materials based on synthetically simple procedures.

Pumping a Ring-Sliding Molecular Motion by a Light-Powered Molecular Motor

Designing artificial molecular machines to execute complex mechanical tasks, like coupling rotation and translation to accomplish transmission of motion, continues to provide important challenges. Herein, we demonstrated a novel molecular machine comprising a second-generation light-driven molecular motor and a bistable [1]rotaxane unit. The molecular motor can rotate successfully even in an interlocked [1]rotaxane system through a photoinduced cis-to -trans isomerization and a thermal helix inversion, resulting in concomitant transitional motion of the [1]rotaxane. The transmission process was elucidated via ¹H NMR, ¹H-¹H COSY, HMQC, HMBC, and 2D ROESY NMR spectroscopies, UV-visible absorption spectrum, and density functional theory calculations. This is the first demonstration of a molecular motor to rotate against the appreciably noncovalent interactions between dibenzo-24-crown-8 and N-methyltriazolium moieties comprising the rotaxane unit, showing operational capabilities of molecular motors to perform more complex tasks.

Herein we report a facile synthetic route for the preparation of a hexa-branched [7]rotaxane by using Co-catalyzed [2+2+2] alkyne cyclotrimerization from a [3]rotaxane.

Controlling interfacial interactions of supramolecular assemblies by light-responsive overcrowded alkenes

A light-responsive supramolecular polymer was constructed by an AB-type monomer containing a light-responsive overcrowded alkene. The primary assemblies of the supramolecular polymer can further undertake secondary self-assembly by interfacial host-guest connections, which can be manipulated by light stimuli to convert into discrete primary assemblies.

An Artificial Molecular Shuttle Operates in Lipid Bilayers for Ion Transport

Inspired by natural biomolecular machines, synthetic molecular-level machines have been proven to perform well-defined mechanical tasks and measurable work. To mimic the function of channel proteins, we herein report the development of a synthetic molecular shuttle, [2]rotaxane 3, as a unimolecular vehicle that can be inserted into lipid bilayers to perform passive ion transport through its stochastic shuttling motion. The [2]rotaxane molecular shuttle is composed of an amphiphilic molecular thread with three binding stations, which is interlocked in a macrocycle wheel component that tethers a K⁺ carrier. The structural characteristics enable the rotaxane to transport ions across the lipid bilayers, similar to a cable car, transporting K⁺ with an EC₅₀ value of 1.0 μM (3.0 mol % relative to lipid). We expect that this simple molecular machine will provide new opportunities for developing more effective and selective ion transporters.

A switchable [2]rotaxane with two active alkenyl groups

A novel functional [2]rotaxane containing two alkenyl bonds was designed, synthesized and characterized by ¹H, ¹³C NMR spectroscopy and HRESI mass spectrometry. The introduction of alkenyl bonds endowed the [2]rotaxane a fascinating ability to react with versatile functional groups such as alkenyl and thiol functional groups. The reversible shuttling movement of the macrocycle between two different recognition sites on the molecular thread can be driven by external acid and base. This kind of rotaxane bearing functional groups provides a powerful platform for preparing stimuli-responsive polymers.
