Sulfur functionalized biocarbon sorbents for low-concentration mercury isolation

Sulfur functionalized biocarbons were prepared from naturally abundant lignin alkali with sodium thiocyanate as an activation agent and a sulfur source. The resultant biocarbon sorbents showed a high mercury isolation ability from aqueous solutions, where high surface area and doping of sulfur significantly aid the uptake of mercury, i.e., 0.05 g of biocarbon sorbent removed 99% of mercury from 250 mL of simulated wastewater with an initial concentration of mercury of 10 mg L-1.

Carbon nanospikes have improved sensitivity and antifouling properties for adenosine, hydrogen peroxide, and histamine

Carbon nanospikes (CNSs) are a new nanomaterial that has enhanced surface roughness and surface oxide concentration, increasing the sensitivity for dopamine detection. However, CNS-modified electrodes (CNSMEs) have not been characterized for other neurochemicals, particularly those with higher oxidation potentials. The purpose of this study was to evaluate CNSMEs for the detection of adenosine, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and histamine. The sensitivity increased with CNSs, and signals at CNSMEs were about 3.3 times higher than CFMEs. Normalizing for surface area differences using background currents, CNSMEs show an increased signal of 4.8 times for adenosine, 1.5 times for H2O2, and 2 times for histamine. CNSMEs promoted the formation of secondary products for adenosine and histamine, which enables differentiation from other analytes with similar oxidation potentials. CNSs also selectively enhance the sensitivity for adenosine and histamine compared to H2O2. A scan rate test reveals that adenosine is more adsorption-controlled at CNS electrodes than CFMEs. CNSMEs are antifouling for histamine, with less fouling because the polymers formed after histamine electrooxidation do not adsorb due to an elevated number of edge planes. CNSMEs were useful for detecting each analyte applied in brain slices. Because of the hydrophilic surface compared to CFMEs, CNSMEs also have reduced biofouling when used in tissue. Therefore, CNSMEs are useful for tissue measurements of adenosine, hydrogen peroxide, and histamine with high selectivity and low fouling.

Using Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanofiber Arrays on Rigid or Flexible Substrates for Delivery of Biomolecules and Dyes to Plants

The delivery of biomolecules and impermeable dyes to intact plants is a major challenge. Nanomaterials are up-and-coming tools for the delivery of DNA to plants. As exciting as these new tools are, they have yet to be widely applied. Nanomaterials fabricated on rigid substrate (backing) are particularly difficult to successfully apply to curved plant structures. This study describes the process for microfabricating vertically aligned carbon nanofiber arrays and transferring them from a rigid to a flexible substrate. We detail and demonstrate how these fibers (on either rigid or flexible substrates) can be used for transient transformation or dye (e.g., fluorescein) delivery to plants. We show how VACNFs can be transferred from rigid silicon substrate to a flexible SU-8 epoxy substrate to form flexible VACNF arrays. To overcome the hydrophobic nature of SU-8, fibers in the flexible film were coated with a thin silicon oxide layer (2-3 nm). To use these fibers for delivery to curved plant organs, we deposit a 1 µL droplet of dye or DNA solution on the fiber side of VACNF films, wait 10 min, place the films on the plant organ and employ a swab with a rolling motion to drive fibers into plant cells. With this method, we have achieved dye and DNA delivery in plant organs with curved surfaces.

Effective antiviral coatings for deactivating SARS-CoV-2 virus on N95 respirator masks or filters

The application of antiviral coatings to masks and respirators is a potential mitigating step toward reducing viral transmission during the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) pandemic. The use of appropriate masks, social distancing, and vaccines is the immediate solution for limiting the viral spread and protecting people from this virus. N95 respirator masks are effective in filtering the virus particles, but they cannot kill or deactivate the virus. We report a possible approach to deactivating SARS-CoV-2 by applying an antimicrobial coating (Goldshield 75) to masks and respirators, rendering them suitable for repeated use. Masks coated with Goldshield 75 demonstrated continuous inactivation of the Alpha and Beta variants of the SARS-CoV-2 over a 3-day period and no loss of inactivation when stored at temperatures at 50 °C.

Performing In Situ Closed-Cell Gas Reactions in the Transmission Electron Microscope

Gas reactions studied by in situ electron microscopy can be used to capture the real-time morphological and microchemical transformations of materials at length scales down to the atomic level. In situ closed-cell gas reaction (CCGR) studies performed using (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (STEM) can separate and identify localized dynamic reactions, which are extremely challenging to capture using other characterization techniques. For these experiments, we used a CCGR holder that utilizes microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based heating microchips (hereafter referred to as "E-chips"). The experimental protocol described here details the method for performing in situ gas reactions in dry and wet gases in an aberration-corrected STEM. This method finds relevance in many different materials systems, such as catalysis and high-temperature oxidation of structural materials at atmospheric pressure and in the presence of various gases with or without water vapor. Here, several sample preparation methods are described for various material form factors. During the reaction, mass spectra obtained with a residual gas analyzer (RGA) system with and without water vapor further validates gas exposure conditions during reactions. Integrating an RGA with an in situ CCGR-STEM system can, therefore, provide critical insight to correlate gas composition with the dynamic surface evolution of materials during reactions. In situ/operando studies using this approach allow for detailed investigation of the fundamental reaction mechanisms and kinetics that occur at specific environmental conditions (time, temperature, gas, pressure), in real-time, and at high spatial resolution.

Influence of Geometry on Thin Layer and Diffusion Processes at Carbon Electrodes

The geometric structure of carbon electrodes affects their electrochemical behavior, and large-scale surface roughness leads to thin layer electrochemistry when analyte is trapped in pores. However, the current response is always a mixture of both thin layer and diffusion processes. Here, we systematically explore the effects of thin layer electrochemistry and diffusion at carbon fiber (CF), carbon nanospike (CNS), and carbon nanotube yarn (CNTY) electrodes. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) response to the surface-insensitive redox couple Ru(NH₃)₆^3+/2+ is tested, so the geometric structure is the only factor. At CFs, the reaction is diffusion-controlled because the surface is smooth. CNTY electrodes have gaps between nanotubes that are about 10 μm deep, comparable with the diffusion layer thickness. CNTY electrodes show clear thin layer behavior due to trapping effects, with more symmetrical peaks and ΔE_p closer to zero. CNS electrodes have submicrometer scale roughness, so their CV shape is mostly due to diffusion, not thin layer effects. However, even the 10% contribution of thin layer behavior reduces the peak separation by 30 mV, indicating ΔE_p is influenced not only by electron transfer kinetics but also by surface geometry. A new simulation model is developed to quantitate the thin layer and diffusion contributions that explains the CV shape and peak separation for CNS and CNTY electrodes, providing insight on the impact of scan rate and surface structure size. Thus, this study provides key understanding of thin layer and diffusion processes at different surface structures and will enable rational design of electrodes with thin layer electrochemistry.

Polymer, Additives, and Processing Effects on N95 Filter Performance

The current severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) pandemic has highlighted the need for personal protective equipment, specifically filtering facepiece respirators like N95 masks. While it is common knowledge that polypropylene (PP) is the industry standard material for filtration media, trial and error is often required to identify suitable commercial precursors for filtration media production. This work aims to identify differences between several commercial grades of PP and demonstrate the development of N95 filtration media with the intent that the industry partners can pivot and help address N95 shortages. Three commercial grades of high melt flow index PP were melt blown at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and broadly characterized by several methods including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and neutron scattering. Despite the apparent similarities (high melt flow and isotacticity) between PP feedstocks, the application of corona charging and charge enhancing additives improve each material to widely varying degrees. From the analysis performed here, the most differentiating factor appears to be related to crystallization of the polymer and the resulting electret formation. Materials with higher crystallization onset temperatures, slower crystallization rates, and larger number of crystallites form a stronger electret and are more effective at filtration.

Carbon nanospikes have better electrochemical properties than carbon nanotubes due to greater surface roughness and defect sites

Carbon nanomaterials are used to improve electrodes for neurotransmitter detection, but what properties are important for maximizing those effects? In this work, we compare a newer form of graphene, carbon nanospikes (CNSs), with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grown on wires and carbon fibers (CFs). CNS electrodes have a short, dense, defect-filled surface that produces remarkable electrochemical properties, much better than CNTs or CFs. The CNS surface roughness is 5.5 times greater than glassy carbon, while CNTs enhance roughness only 1.8-fold. D/G ratios are higher for CNS electrodes than CNT electrodes, an indication of more defect sites. For cyclic voltammetry of dopamine and ferricyanide, CNSs have both higher currents and smaller ΔEp values than CNTs and CFs. CNS electrodes also have a very low resistance to charge transfer. With fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV), CNS electrodes have enhanced current density for dopamine and cationic neurotransmitters due to increased adsorption to edge plane sites. This study establishes that not all carbon nanomaterials are equally advantageous for dopamine electrochemistry, but that short, dense nanomaterials that add defect sites provide improved current and electron transfer. CNSs are simple to mass fabricate on a variety of substrates and thus could be a favorable material for neurotransmitter sensing.

Solvent-Free Synthesis of CuO/HKUST-1 Composite and Its Photocatalytic Application

A metal-organic framework (MOF) is one kind of crystalline microporous material and is increasingly used as a host of catalytically active guests. Nanostructured materials supported on MOFs have presented enhanced catalytic activity and stability. Templates or several steps are essential to the synthesis of MOF composites. Simple and effective MOF synthesis methods are still challenging. Nanosized copper oxide particles in MOF composites, described as nanosized CuO@HKUST-1, were prepared by a facile solvent-free reaction. These series of CuO@HKUST-1 composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for production of hydrogen and methylene blue (MB) degradation under visible light. This synthesis method provides an effective way to fabricate MOF-related nanocomposite catalysts.

Synthesis of Nitrogen and Sulfur Codoped Nanoporous Carbons from Algae: Role in CO2 Separation

Nitrogen and sulfur codoped and completely renewable carbons were synthesized from two types of algae, Spirulina Platensis and Chlorella Vulgaris, without any additional nitrogen fixation reaction. The type of activation agents, char-forming temperature, activation agent-to-char ratio, and activation temperature were all varied to optimize the reaction conditions for this synthesis. The maximum Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and total pore volumes of the carbons were 2685 m²/g and 1.4 cm³/g, respectively. The nitrogen and sulfur contents of the carbons were in the range of 0.9-5.69 at. % and 0.05-0.2 at. %, respectively. The key nitrogen functionalities were pyridinic, amino, and pyridonic/pyrrolic groups, whereas the key sulfur functionalities were S-C, O-S-C, and SO _x groups. CO₂ adsorption isotherms were measured at 273, 298, and 313 K, and the ideal adsorbed solution theory was employed to calculate the selectivity of adsorption of CO₂ over N₂ and simulate binary adsorption isotherms. The adsorption results demonstrated that the CO₂ adsorption amount and the heat of CO₂ adsorption were higher for carbons with higher nitrogen content, confirming the influence of nitrogen functionality in CO₂ adsorption. The overall results suggested that these algae-derived renewable carbons can serve as potential adsorbents for CO₂ separation from N₂.

A physical catalyst for the electrolysis of nitrogen to ammonia

Ammonia synthesis consumes 3 to 5% of the world's natural gas, making it a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Strategies for synthesizing ammonia that are not dependent on the energy-intensive and methane-based Haber-Bosch process are critically important for reducing global energy consumption and minimizing climate change. Motivated by a need to investigate novel nitrogen fixation mechanisms, we herein describe a highly textured physical catalyst, composed of N-doped carbon nanospikes, that electrochemically reduces dissolved N₂ gas to ammonia in an aqueous electrolyte under ambient conditions. The Faradaic efficiency (FE) achieves 11.56 ± 0.85% at -1.19 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, and the maximum production rate is 97.18 ± 7.13 μg hour^-1 cm^-2. The catalyst contains no noble or rare metals but rather has a surface composed of sharp spikes, which concentrates the electric field at the tips, thereby promoting the electroreduction of dissolved N₂ molecules near the electrode. The choice of electrolyte is also critically important because the reaction rate is dependent on the counterion type, suggesting a role in enhancing the electric field at the sharp spikes and increasing N₂ concentration within the Stern layer. The energy efficiency of the reaction is estimated to be 5.25% at the current FE of 11.56%.

Aromatic Polyimide/Graphene Composite Organic Cathodes for Fast and Sustainable Lithium-Ion Batteries

A composite organic cathode material based on aromatic polyimide (PI) and highly conductive graphene was prepared through a facile in situ polymerization method for application in lithium-ion batteries. The in situ polymerization generated intimate contact between PI and electronically conductive graphene, resulting in conductive composites with highly reversible redox reactions and good structure stability. The synergistic effect between PI and graphene enabled not only a high reversible capacity of 232.6 mAh g^-1 at a charge-discharge rate of C/10 but also exceptionally high-rate cycling stability, that is, a high capacity of 108.9 mAh g^-1 at a very high charge-discharge rate of 50C with a capacity retention of 80 % after 1000 cycles. This improved electrochemical performance resulted from the combination of stable redox reversibility of PI and high electronic conductivity of the graphene additive. The graphene-based composite also exhibited much better performance than composites based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes and the conductive carbon black C45 in terms of specific capacity and long-term cycling stability under the same charge-discharge rates.

Polymeric spatial resolution test patterns for mass spectrometry imaging using nano-thermal analysis with atomic force microscopy

RATIONALE

As the spatial resolution of mass spectrometry imaging technologies has begun to reach into the nanometer regime, finding readily available or easily made resolution reference materials has become particularly challenging for molecular imaging purposes. This paper describes the fabrication, characterization and use of vertical line array polymeric spatial resolution test patterns for nano-thermal analysis/atomic force microscopy/mass spectrometry chemical imaging.

METHODS

Test patterns of varied line width (0.7 or 1.0 μm) and spacing (0.7 or 1.0 μm) were created in an ~1-μm-thick poly(methyl methacrylate) thin film using electron beam lithography. The patterns were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy topography and nano-thermal analysis/mass spectrometry imaging.

RESULTS

The efficacy of these polymeric test patterns for the advancement of chemical imaging techniques was illustrated by their use to judge the spatial resolution improvement achieved by heating the ionization interface of the current instrument platform. The spatial resolution of the mass spectral chemical images was estimated to be 1.4 μm, based on the ability to statistically distinguish 0.7-μm-wide lines separated by 0.7-μm-wide spacings in those images when the interface cross was heated to 200°C.

CONCLUSIONS

This work illustrates that e-beam lithography is a viable method to create spatial resolution test patterns in a thin film of high molecular weight polymer to allow unbiased judgment of intra-laboratory advancement and/or inter-laboratory comparison of instrument advances in nano-thermal analysis/atomic force microscopy/mass spectrometry chemical imaging. Noncompetitive and Competitive Adsorption of Heavy Metals in Sulfur-Functionalized Ordered Mesoporous Carbon

In this work, sulfur-functionalized ordered mesoporous carbons were synthesized by activating the soft-templated mesoporous carbons with sulfur bearing salts that simultaneously enhanced the surface area and introduced sulfur functionalities onto the parent carbon surface. XPS analysis showed that sulfur content within the mesoporous carbons were between 8.2% and 12.9%. The sulfur functionalities include C-S, C═S, -COS, and SO_x. SEM images confirmed the ordered mesoporosity within the material. The BET surface areas of the sulfur-functionalized ordered mesoporous carbons range from 837 to 2865 m²/g with total pore volume of 0.71-2.3 cm³/g. The carbon with highest sulfur functionality was examined for aqueous phase adsorption of mercury (as HgCl₂), lead (as Pb(NO₃)₂), cadmium (as CdCl₂), and nickel (as NiCl₂) ions in both noncompetitive and competitive mode. Under noncompetitive mode and at a pH greater than 7.0 the affinity of sulfur-functionalized carbons toward heavy metals were in the order of Hg > Pb > Cd > Ni. At lower pH, the adsorbent switched its affinity between Pb and Cd. In the noncompetitive mode, Hg and Pb adsorption showed a strong pH dependency whereas Cd and Ni adsorption did not demonstrate a significant influence of pH. The distribution coefficient for noncompetitive adsorption was in the range of 2448-4000 mL/g for Hg, 290-1990 mL/g for Pb, 550-560 mL/g for Cd, and 115-147 for Ni. The kinetics of adsorption suggested a pseudo-second-order model fits better than other models for all the metals. XPS analysis of metal-adsorption carbons suggested that 7-8% of the adsorbed Hg was converted to HgSO₄, 14% and 2% of Pb was converted to PbSO₄ and PbS/PbO, respectively, and 5% Cd was converted to CdSO₄. Ni was below the detection limit for XPS. Overall results suggested these carbon materials might be useful for the separation of heavy metals.

A Glucose Biosensor Using CMOS Potentiostat and Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanofibers

This paper reports a linear, low power, and compact CMOS based potentiostat for vertically aligned carbon nanofibers (VACNF) based amperometric glucose sensors. The CMOS based potentiostat consists of a single-ended potential control unit, a low noise common gate difference-differential pair transimpedance amplifier and a low power VCO. The potentiostat current measuring unit can detect electrochemical current ranging from 500 nA to 7 [Formula: see text] from the VACNF working electrodes with high degree of linearity. This current corresponds to a range of glucose, which depends on the fiber forest density. The potentiostat consumes 71.7 [Formula: see text] of power from a 1.8 V supply and occupies 0.017 [Formula: see text] of chip area realized in a 0.18 [Formula: see text] standard CMOS process.

Superior Conductive Solid-like Electrolytes: Nanoconfining Liquids within the Hollow Structures

The growth and proliferation of lithium (Li) dendrites during cell recharge are currently unavoidable, which seriously hinders the development and application of rechargeable Li metal batteries. Solid electrolytes with robust mechanical modulus are regarded as a promising approach to overcome the dendrite problems. However, their room-temperature ionic conductivities are usually too low to reach the level required for normal battery operation. Here, a class of novel solid electrolytes with liquid-like room-temperature ionic conductivities (>1 mS cm(-1)) has been successfully synthesized by taking advantage of the unique nanoarchitectures of hollow silica (HS) spheres to confine liquid electrolytes in hollow space to afford high conductivities (2.5 mS cm(-1)). In a symmetric lithium/lithium cell, the solid-like electrolytes demonstrate a robust performance against the Li dendrite problem, preventing the cell from short circuiting at current densities ranging from 0.16 to 0.32 mA cm(-2) over an extended period of time. Moreover, the high flexibility and compatibility of HS nanoarchitectures, in principle, enables broad tunability to choose desired liquids for the fabrication of other kinds of solid-like electrolytes, such as those containing Na(+), Mg(2+), or Al(3+) as conductive media, providing a useful alternative strategy for the development of next generation rechargeable batteries.

Optical and infrared properties of glancing angle-deposited nanostructured tungsten films

Nanotextured tungsten thin films were obtained on a stainless steel (SS) substrate using the glancing-angle-deposition (GLAD) method. It was found that the optical absorption and thermal emittance of the SS substrate can be controlled by varying the parameters used during deposition. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations were used to predict the optical absorption and infrared (IR) reflectance spectra of the fabricated samples, and good agreement was found between simulated and measured data. FDTD simulations were also used to predict the effect of changes in the height and periodicity of the nanotextures. These simulations show that good control over the absorption can be achieved by altering the height and periodicity of the nanostructure. These nanostructures were shown to be temperature stable up to 500°C with the addition of a protective HfO2 layer. Applications for this structure are explored, including a promising application for solar thermal energy systems.

Synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity of novel large network polystyrene-immobilized organic bases

In view of searching for efficient solid catalysts to be used in environmentally friendly reaction conditions, novel gel-type cross-linked polystyrenes functionalized with diethylamine and 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene, have been prepared.

Micro-/mesoporous carbons for controlled release of antipyrine and indomethacin

We have demonstrated the potential of meso- and microporous carbons in controlled release applications and targeted oral drug delivery.

Biocompatibility of soft-templated mesoporous carbons

Soft-templated mesoporous carbon is morphologically a non-nano type of carbon. It is a relatively newer variety of biomaterial, which has already demonstrated its successful role in drug delivery applications. To investigate the toxicity and biocompatibility, we introduced three types of mesoporous carbons with varying synthesis conditions and pore textural properties. We compared the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and pore width and performed cytotoxicity experiments with HeLa cells, cell viability studies with fibroblast cells and hemocomapatibility studies. Cytotoxicity tests reveal that two of the carbons are not cytotoxic, with cell survival over 90%. The mesoporous carbon with the highest surface area showed slight toxicity (∼ 70% cell survival) at the highest carbon concentration of 500 μg/mL. Fibroblast cell viability assays suggested high and constant viability of over 98% after 3 days with no apparent relation with materials property and good visible cell-carbon compatibility. No hemolysis (<1%) was confirmed for all the carbon materials. Protein adsorption experiments with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and fibrinogen revealed a lower protein binding capacity of 0.2-0.6 mg/m(2) and 2-4 mg/m(2) for BSA and fibrinogen, respectively, with lower binding associated with an increase in surface area. The results of this study confirm the biocompatibility of soft-templated mesoporous carbons.

Studies on supercapacitor electrode material from activated lignin-derived mesoporous carbon

We synthesized mesoporous carbon from pre-cross-linked lignin gel impregnated with a surfactant as the pore-forming agent and then activated the carbon through physical and chemical methods to obtain activated mesoporous carbon. The activated mesoporous carbons exhibited 1.5- to 6-fold increases in porosity with a maximum Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area of 1148 m(2)/g and a pore volume of 1.0 cm(3)/g. Both physical and chemical activation enhanced the mesoporosity along with significant microporosity. Plots of cyclic voltammetric data with the capacitor electrode made from these carbons showed an almost rectangular curve depicting the behavior of ideal double-layer capacitance. Although the pristine mesoporous carbon exhibited a range of surface-area-based capacitance similar to that of other known carbon-based supercapacitors, activation decreased the surface-area-based specific capacitance and enhanced the gravimetric specific capacitance of the mesoporous carbons. A vertical tail in the lower-frequency domain of the Nyquist plot provided additional evidence of good supercapacitor behavior for the activated mesoporous carbons. We have modeled the equivalent circuit of the Nyquist plot with the help of two constant phase elements (CPE). Our work demonstrated that biomass-derived mesoporous carbon materials continue to show potential for use in specific electrochemical applications.

Encapsulation of large dye molecules in hierarchically superstructured metal–organic frameworks

A perturbation assisted nanofusion technique to construct hierarchically superstructured MOFs was reported. In particular, the mesopores in the MOF structure enabled the confinement of large dye species, resulting in fluorescent dye@MOF composite materials.

Airbrushed nickel nanoparticles for large-area growth of vertically aligned carbon nanofibers on metal (Al, Cu, Ti) surfaces

Vertically aligned carbon nanofibers (VACNFs) were grown by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using Ni nanoparticle (NP) catalysts that were deposited by airbrushing onto Si, Al, Cu, and Ti substrates. Airbrushing is a simple method for depositing catalyst NPs over large areas that is compatible with roll-to-roll processing. The distribution and morphology of VACNFs are affected by the airbrushing parameters and the composition of the metal foil. Highly concentrated Ni NPs in heptane give more uniform distributions than pentane and hexanes, resulting in more uniform coverage of VACNFs. For VACNF growth on metal foils, Si micropowder was added as a precursor for Si-enriched coatings formed in situ on the VACNFs that impart mechanical rigidity. Interactions between the catalyst NPs and the metal substrates impart control over the VACNF morphology. Growth of carbon nanostructures on Cu is particularly noteworthy because the miscibility of Ni with Cu poses challenges for VACNF growth, and carbon nanostructures anchored to Cu substrates are desired as anode materials for Li-ion batteries and for thermal interface materials.

Monodispersed biocompatible silver sulfide nanoparticles: facile extracellular biosynthesis using the γ-proteobacterium, Shewanella oneidensis

Interest in engineered metal and semiconductor nanocrystallites continues to grow due to their unique size- and shape-dependent optoelectronic, physicochemical and biological properties. Therefore identifying novel non-hazardous nanoparticle synthesis routes that address hydrophilicity, size and shape control and production costs has become a priority. In the present article we report for the first time on the efficient generation of extracellular silver sulfide (Ag₂S) nanoparticles by the metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis. The particles are reasonably monodispersed and homogeneously shaped. They are produced under ambient temperatures and pressures at high yield, 85% theoretical maximum. UV-visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements confirmed the formation, optical and surface properties, purity and crystallinity of the synthesized particles. Further characterization revealed that the particles consist of spheres with a mean diameter of 9±3.5 nm, and are capped by a detachable protein/peptide surface coat. Toxicity assessments of these biogenic Ag₂S nanoparticles on Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and S. oneidensis) and Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis) bacterial systems, as well as eukaryotic cell lines including mouse lung epithelial (C 10) and macrophage (RAW-264.7) cells, showed that the particles were non-inhibitory and non-cytotoxic to any of these systems. Our results provide a facile, eco-friendly and economical route for the fabrication of technologically important semiconducting Ag₂S nanoparticles. These particles are dispersible and biocompatible, thus providing excellent potential for use in optical imaging, electronic devices and solar cell applications.

Role of ion flux on alignment of carbon nanofibers synthesized by DC plasma on transparent insulating substrates

A key factor to the implementation of devices with vertically aligned carbon nanofibers (VACNFs) is fundamental understanding of how to control fluctuations in the growth direction of the fibers. Here we demonstrate synthesis of VACNF on transparent and insulating substrates by continuous direct current (DC) plasma for realization of cellular interface suitable for transmission optical microscopy. To maintain continuous glow discharge above the substrate, a metal grid electrode layer (Cr) was deposited over silica with windows of exposed silica ranging in size from 200 μm to 1 mm. This electrode geometry allows for synthesis of VACNFs even within an insulating window. This observation and the observed trends in the alignment of nanofibers in the vicinity of grid electrodes have indicated that the alignment does not correspond to the direction of the electric field at the substrate level, contrary to previously proposed alignment mechanism. Computational modeling of the plasma with this grid cathode geometry has shown that nanofiber alignment trends follow calculated ion flux direction rather than electrical field. The new proposed alignment mechanism is that ion sputtering of the carbon film on a catalyst particle defines the growth direction of the nanofibers. With this development, fiber growth direction can be better manipulated through changes in ionic flux direction, opening the possibility for growth of nanofibers on substrates with unique geometries.

Pulsed laser dewetting of nickel catalyst for carbon nanofiber growth

We present a pulsed laser dewetting technique that produces single nickel catalyst particles from lithographically patterned disks for subsequent carbon nanofiber growth through plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Unlike the case for standard heat treated Ni catalyst disks, for which multiple nickel particles and consequently multiple carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are observed, single vertically aligned CNFs could be obtained from the laser dewetted catalyst. Different laser dewetting parameters were tested in this study, such as the laser energy density and the laser processing time measured by the total number of laser pulses. Various nickel disk radii and thicknesses were attempted and the resultant number of carbon nanofibers was found to be a function of the initial disk dimension and the number of laser pulses.

Positional control of catalyst nanoparticles for the synthesis of high density carbon nanofiber arrays

Precise arrangement of nanoscale elements within larger systems, is essential to controlling higher order functionality and tailoring nanophase material properties. Here, we present findings on growth conditions for vertically aligned carbon nanofibers that enable synthesis of high density arrays and individual rows of nanofibers, which could be used to form barriers for restricting molecular transport, that have regular spacings and few defects. Growth through plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition was initiated from precisely formed nickel catalyst dots of varying diameter and spacing that were patterned through electron beam lithography. Nanofiber growth conditions, including power, precursor gas ratio, growth temperature and pressure were varied to optimize fiber uniformity and minimize defects that result from formation and migration of catalyst particles prior to growth. It was determined that both catalyst dot diameter and initial plasma power have a considerable influence on the number and severity of defects, while growth temperature, gas ratio (C(2)H(2):NH(3)) and pressure can be varied within a considerable range to fine-tune nanofiber morphology.

Resident neuroelectrochemical interfacing using carbon nanofiber arrays

Carbon nanofiber electrode architectures are used to provide for long-term, neuroelectroanalytical measurements of the dynamic processes of intercellular communication between excitable cells. Individually addressed, vertically aligned carbon nanofibers are incorporated into multielement electrode arrays upon which excitable cell matrixes of both neuronal-like derived cell lines (rat pheochromocytoma, PC-12) and primary cells (dissociated cells from embryonic rat hippocampus) are cultured over extended periods (days to weeks). Electrode arrays are characterized with respect to their response to easily oxidized neurotransmitters, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and 5-hydroxytyramide. Electroanalysis at discrete electrodes following long-term cell culture demonstrates that this platform remains responsive for the detection of easily oxidized species generated by the cultured cells. Preliminary data also suggests that quantal release of easily oxidized transmitters can be observed at nanofiber electrodes following direct culture and differentiation on the arrays for periods of at least 16 days.

Molecular transport in a crowded volume created from vertically aligned carbon nanofibres: a fluorescence recovery after photobleaching study

Rapid and selective molecular exchange across a barrier is essential for emulating the properties of biological membranes. Vertically-aligned carbon nanofibre (VACNF) forests have shown great promise as membrane mimics, owing to their mechanical stability, their ease of integration with microfabrication technologies and the ability to tailor their morphology and surface properties. However, quantifying transport through synthetic membranes having micro- and nanoscale features is challenging. Here, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) is coupled with finite difference and Monte Carlo simulations to quantify diffusive transport in microfluidic structures containing VACNF forests. Anomalous subdiffusion was observed for FITC (hydrodynamic radius of 0.54 nm) diffusion through both VACNFs and SiO(2)-coated VACNFS (oxVACNFs). Anomalous subdiffusion can be attributed to multiple FITC-nanofibre interactions for the case of diffusion through the VACNF forest. Volume crowding was identified as the cause of anomalous subdiffusion in the oxVACNF forest. In both cases the diffusion mode changes to a time-independent, Fickian mode of transport that can be defined by a crossover length (R(CR)). By identifying the space-and time-dependent transport characteristics of the VACNF forest, the dimensional features of membranes can be tailored to achieve predictable molecular exchange.

Formation of Ultrasharp Vertically Aligned Cu−Si Nanocones by a DC Plasma Process

We report an effective method for the production of ultrasharp vertically oriented silicon nanocones with tip radii as small as 5 nm. These silicon nanostructures were shaped by a high-temperature acetylene and ammonia dc plasma reactive ion etch (RIE) process. Thin-film copper deposited onto Si substrates forms a copper silicide (Cu3Si) during plasma processing, which subsequently acts as a seed material masking the single-crystal cones while the exposed silicon areas are reactive ion etched. In this process, the cone angle is sharpened continually as the structure becomes taller. Furthermore, by lithographically defining the seed material as well as employing an etch barrier material such as titanium, the cone location and substrate topography can be controlled effectively.
