Abstract
Freshly slaughtered carcasses need to be chilled to improve product quality, meat safety, and processing efficiency. This research investigated the effect of subzero saline chilling (SSC) on broiler carcasses with or without prechilling in icy water. Water immersion chilling at 0.5°C (WIC) or SSC at 4% NaCl/-2.41°C (SSC) was a major chilling step. For the combination of pre- and postchilling, the warm water immersion chilling (WWIC) at 10°C was used as prechilling and the WIC as postchilling (WWIC-WIC), and WIC was used as prechilling and the SSC as postchilling (WIC-SSC). The internal temperature of breast fillets was monitored during chilling. Carcasses in a prechiller were transported to a postchiller when their internal temperature reached 15°C. Chilling was completed when the carcass temperature reached 4.4°C or below, and breast fillets were harvested at 3-h postmortem to measure the pH and sarcomere length. Color (L*, a*, and b*) values were evaluated on both breast skin and skinless breast surfaces. Meat tenderness was evaluated using the breast fillets after overnight storage and cooking to an internal temperature of 76°C. The carcasses in the SSC and WIC-SSC showed shorter chilling times (85-91 min) than those (100-144 min) of WIC and WWIC-WIC. A higher chilling yield was observed for the carcasses in WIC-SSC, and a lower cooking yield was seen for the carcasses in WWIC-WIC than other chilling methods (P < 0.05). The breast fillets of broilers in the SSC and WIC-SSC showed lower shear forces and longer sarcomere length than the WIC and WWIC-WIC. No difference was found for L* and a* values, while lower b* value was observed in the SSC than the other chilling methods (P < 0.05). Based on these results, chilling of broiler carcasses in the SSC (4% NaCl/-2.41°C) with or without prechilling in WIC at 0.5°C significantly improved chilling efficiency and meat tenderness, with minor color changes on carcasses.

Abstract
Jogaejeot, seasoned Venerupis philippinarum, is a traditional Korean fermented food, and hepatitis A virus (HAV) can be transmitted through contaminated food, especially bivalve shellfish, causing acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Here, we carried out a phylogenetic analysis to identify and characterize HAV strains in jogaejeot samples associated with hepatitis A (HA) outbreaks in Seoul, South Korea, in 2019. The HAV strains were identified using blast and molecular analysis of the amplified HAV VP1-P2B genome region. The HAV strains identified in the five jogaejeot samples shared at least 99% sequence identity, were all classified as genotype IA and were most closely related to strains that are widespread in East Asia. These results support a link between the consumption of jogaejeot and the HA outbreaks observed in 2019 in Seoul. In addition, they indicate a need for more stringent enforcement of food safety regulations for the shellfish industry, especially against HAV, and the value of widespread vaccination.

Abstract
Point defect engineering in Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) thin films is the main issue to improve its device performance. This study reveals the correlation between the reaction pathway and the point defects in the CZTSe film. The reaction pathway from a metallic precursor (Mo/Zn/Sn/Cu) to a kesterite CZTSe film is varied by changing the annealing process. The synthesized CZTSe films under different reaction pathways induce different device performances with different defect energy levels, although all CZTSe films have similar structural and optical properties (Eg ∼ 1.0 eV). The admittance spectroscopy demonstrates the correlations between point defect types (VZn, ZnSn, ZnCu, CuZn, and VCu) and the reaction pathways for the formation of CZTSe films. The different growth rates of binary selenides, such as ZnSe and/or Sn-Se phases, during the annealing process are especially strongly related to the formation of point defects, leading to the different open-circuit voltages (396-451 mV) and fill factors (51-65%). The results of this study suggest that controlling the reaction pathway is an effective approach to adjust the formation of defects in the kesterite CZTSe film as well as to fabricate high-performance solar cell devices.

Abstract
The interface trap density in single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) network thin-film transistors (TFTs) is a fundamental and important parameter for assessing the electronic performance of TFTs. However, the number of studies on the extraction of interface trap densities, particularly in SWNT TFTs, has been insufficient. In this work, we propose an efficient technique for extracting the energy-dependent interface traps in SWNT TFTs. From the measured dispersive, frequency-dependent capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics, the dispersive-free, frequency-independent C-V curve was obtained, thus enabling the extraction and analysis of the interface trap density, which was found to be approximately 8.2 × 10(11) eV(-1) cm(-2) at the valence band edge. The frequency-independent C-V curve also allows further extraction of the quantum capacitance in the SWNT network without introducing any additional fitting process or parameters. We found that the extracted value of the quantum capacitance in SWNT networks is lower than the theoretical value in aligned SWNTs due to the cross point of SWNTs on the SWNT network. Therefore, the method proposed in this work indicates that the C-V measurement is a powerful tool for obtaining deep physical insights regarding the electrical performance of SWNT TFTs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Uremic encephalopathy is a metabolic disorder in patients with renal failure. The purpose of this study was to describe the MR imaging findings of uremic encephalopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study retrospectively reviewed MR imaging findings in 10 patients with clinically proved uremic encephalopathy between May 2005 and December 2014. Parameters evaluated were lesion location and appearance; MR signal intensity of the lesions on T1WI, T2WI, and T2 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images; the presence or absence of restricted diffusion on diffusion-weighted images and apparent diffusion coefficient maps; and the reversibility of documented signal-intensity abnormalities on follow-up MR imaging. RESULTS MR imaging abnormalities accompanying marked elevation of serum creatinine (range, 4.3-11.7 mg/dL) were evident in the 10 patients. Nine patients had a history of chronic renal failure with expansile bilateral basal ganglia lesions, and 1 patient with acute renal failure had reversible largely cortical lesions. Two of 6 patients with available arterial blood gas results had metabolic acidosis. All basal ganglia lesions showed expansile high signal intensity (lentiform fork sign) on T2WI. Varied levels of restricted diffusion and a range of signal intensities on DWI were evident and were not correlated with serum Cr levels. All cortical lesions demonstrated high signal intensity on T2WI. Four patients with follow-up MR imaging after hemodialysis showed complete resolution of all lesions. CONCLUSIONS The lentiform fork sign is reliable in the early diagnosis of uremic encephalopathy, regardless of the presence of metabolic acidosis. Cytotoxic edema and/or vasogenic edema on DWI/ADC maps may be associated with uremic encephalopathy.

Abstract
Researchers have been using various ergonomic tools to study occupational musculoskeletal diseases in industrial contexts. However, in agricultural work, where the work environment is poorer and the socio-psychological stress is high due to the high labor intensities of the industry, current research efforts have been scarce, and the number of available tools is small. In our preliminary studies, which focused on a limited number of body parts and other working elements, we developed separate evaluation tools for the upper and lower extremities. The current study was conducted to develop a whole-body ergonomic assessment tool for agricultural work that integrates the existing assessment tools for lower and upper extremities developed in the preliminary studies and to verify the relevance of the integrated assessment tool. To verify the relevance of the Agricultural Whole-Body Assessment (AWBA) tool, we selected 50 different postures that occur frequently in agricultural work. Our results showed that the AWBA-determined risk levels were similar to the subjective risk levels determined by experts. In addition, as the risk level increased, the average risk level increased to a similar extent. Moreover, the differences in risk levels between the AWBA and expert assessments were mostly smaller than the differences in risk levels between other assessment tools and the expert assessments in this study. In conclusion, the AWBA tool developed in this study was demonstrated to be appropriate for use as a tool for assessing various postures commonly assumed in agricultural work. Moreover, we believe that our verification of the assessment tools will contribute to the enhancement of the quality of activities designed to prevent and control work-related musculoskeletal diseases in other industries.

Abstract
This study intended to compare the productive performance of three different layer raising systems; conventional cage (CC), barn (BR) and aviary (AV). The AV is welfare bestowed housing that allows free locomotion for birds within the BR. The BR allows bird's free locomotion inside BR but without multilevel structures. Both pullets and cockerels were housed together in both AV and BR, but only pullets in CC. Seventeen weeks old Lohmann Brown Lite (n = 800) pullets were housed in AV during this study. The same age layer pullets were simultaneously assigned to either at CC or BR to compare egg production performance with AV. The duration of experiment was 40 weeks (from 21st to 60th week). There were no remarkable differences in egg production, hen day egg production (HDEP) and average egg weight among three rearing systems. First 20 weeks (phase-1) average HDEP (%) of AV, CC, and BR were 85.9, 88.8, 87.1 and average egg weights (g) were 57.5, 59.9, and 56.9 respectively. Those of the remaining 20 weeks (phase-2) were 87.1, 87.9, 85.5 and 64.2, 63.0 62.1, respectively. Daily feed intakes (122 g, 110 g, 125 g); feed conversion ratio (2.4, 2.1, 2.5) and daily egg mass (53.9 g, 54.4 g, 52.8 g) data from AV, CC, and BR were not influenced significantly by the respective raising systems. Daily feed intake of layers in both AV (124 g) and BR (127 g) tended to be higher than that in CC (113 g) during phase-2. Overall, exterior egg quality (dirty and cracked eggs) in both phases was superior in BR compared with AV and CC, whereas CC generated intermediate results. This study indicated that the HDEP per se in AV and BR were not significantly different from that in CC. The study implied that the facility depreciation cost for AV and cost for increased feed intake in AV compared to CC are believed to be critical to evaluate the cost effectiveness of egg production in AV.

Abstract
We have investigated the detailed features of photoluminescence (PL) in vertically aligned ZnO nanotube (NT) arrays as a function of temperature, pumping power, and experimental geometries. In samples with different wall thickness (15 or 60 nm), the temperature-dependent PL energy followed the Varshni's formula whose fitting parameters were found to be rather close to zero-dimensional case in the 15 nm-thick NTs with much larger intensity. In reflective geometry with circular excitation beam shape, the emission gradually evolved from spontaneous to stimulated regime, inferred from amplitude and line-width variation. On the other hand, in the edge-emission geometry with needle-like excitation shape, the interaction length dependence was directly traced by using an adjustable slit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Primary vascular dysregulation syndrome (also called Flammer syndrome) is related to certain eye diseases, particularly normal tension glaucoma. Primary vascular dysregulation is characterized by a number of symptoms and signs (e.g., cold hands and/or feet, low blood pressure), that occur more frequently in subjects with primary vascular dysregulation compared to the general population. The aim of the present study was to test and compare the relative frequency of symptoms and signs related to primary vascular dysregulation in unselected populations in Switzerland and Korea. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Swiss (n=259) and Korean (n=1116) subjects filled out our questionnaire containing 15 questions related to symptoms and signs of primary vascular dysregulation. RESULTS In the populations studied, seven of 15 symptoms and signs of primary vascular dysregulation (increased smell perception, increased pain sensation, increased response to certain drugs, low body mass index, feeling cold, cold hands and/or feet, and headaches) occurred significantly more often in the Swiss population than in the Korean population, whereas five symptoms and signs (reversible skin blotches, tendency toward perfectionism, long sleep onset time, tinnitus, and dizziness) occurred significantly more often in the Korean population. CONCLUSION The relative frequency of these symptoms and signs of primary vascular dysregulation in an unselected average population differs between Switzerland and Korea. Therefore, if a diagnosis of primary vascular dysregulation is based on the self-reported symptoms and signs of the patient, they must be compared with the frequency of symptoms and signs in the corresponding local population.

Abstract
AIM This study was designed to assess the efficacy and safety of the dipeptidyl peptidase IV inhibitor gemigliptin (LC15-0444) 50 mg versus placebo in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS We conducted a 24-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase III trial in 182 patients (74 from Korea and 108 from India) with type 2 diabetes. After an initial 2 weeks of a diet and exercise programme followed by 2 weeks of a single-blind placebo run-in period, eligible patients were randomized to gemigliptin 50 mg or placebo, receiving the assigned treatment for 24 weeks. HbA1c and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) were measured periodically, and oral glucose tolerance test was performed at baseline and weeks 12 and 24. RESULTS At week 24, gemigliptin treatment led to significant reductions in HbA1c measurements compared to placebo (adjust mean after subtracting the placebo effect size: -0.71%, 95% confidence interval: -1.04 to -0.37%). A significantly greater proportion of patients achieved an HbA1c <7% with gemigliptin than with placebo. The placebo-subtracted FPG change from baseline at week 24 was -19.80 mg/dl. The overall incidence rates for adverse events were similar in the gemigliptin and placebo groups. CONCLUSIONS This study showed the efficacy and safety of gemigliptin 50 mg administered once daily as a monotherapy for type 2 diabetes patients.

Abstract
Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) incorporating active piezoelectric layers offer integrated actuation, sensing, and transduction. The broad implementation of such active MEMS has long been constrained by the inability to integrate materials with giant piezoelectric response, such as Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))O(3)-PbTiO(3) (PMN-PT). We synthesized high-quality PMN-PT epitaxial thin films on vicinal (001) Si wafers with the use of an epitaxial (001) SrTiO(3) template layer with superior piezoelectric coefficients (e(31,f) = -27 ± 3 coulombs per square meter) and figures of merit for piezoelectric energy-harvesting systems. We have incorporated these heterostructures into microcantilevers that are actuated with extremely low drive voltage due to thin-film piezoelectric properties that rival bulk PMN-PT single crystals. These epitaxial heterostructures exhibit very large electromechanical coupling for ultrasound medical imaging, microfluidic control, mechanical sensing, and energy harvesting.

Abstract
Many countries where scrub typhus is endemic use their own cutoff values for antibody titres to differentiate between cured cases and current infections. To establish an antibody titre cutoff value, one needs to investigate the seroprevalence in endemic areas, and the duration of the increase in titre after complete cure. We conducted a follow-up study of anti-Orientia tsutsugamushi antibody titres using indirect immunofluorescence assays (IFA) and passive haemagglutination assays (PHA) in patients with scrub typhus. After the onset of symptoms, IgM antibody titres increased gradually over 2-3 weeks, peaked at about 4 weeks, and started to decrease rapidly between 4 and 5 weeks. At 1-year follow-up, the median IgM value was 1:10. Out of 77 patients who were tested at that time, 36 (47%) had IgM titres > or =1:20, and none had titres exceeding 1:80. Over the first 2 weeks, IgG antibody titres increased sharply, peaked at about 4 weeks and decreased rather gradually thereafter, with a median titre of 1:128 maintained up to the 18th month. At 1-year follow-up, five out of 77 patients (6.5%) had titres > or =1:1,024 and 57% had titres > or =1:128. Based on these results, a cutoff value of > or =1:160 for IgM antibody should differentiate between previous and current infections in endemic areas such as Korea and Japan, where scrub typhus occurs mainly in the autumn.

Abstract
Most of the p53 target genes, all except MDM2, COP1 and PIRH2, perform functions in apoptosis, differentiation and cell cycle arrest. The aforementioned oncogenes downregulate p53 through a negative feedback mechanism, and thus contribute to tumor development. In this study, we report a new p53 target, PRL-1, which is believed to be a significant regulator in the development and metastasis of a variety of cancer types. Phosphatase of regenerating liver 1 (PRL-1) overexpression reduced the levels of endogenous and exogenous p53 proteins, and inhibited p53-mediated apoptosis. On the other hand, the ablation of PRL-1 by small interfering RNA (siRNA) increased p53 protein levels. The p53 downregulation was mediated by p53 ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation. Furthermore, p53 ubiquitination by PRL-1 was achieved through two independent pathways, by inducing PIRH2 transcription and by inducing MDM2 phosphorylation through Akt signaling. In addition, we showed that the PRL-1 gene harbors a p53 response element in the first intron, and its transcription is regulated by the p53 protein. These findings imply that the new oncogenic p53 target, PRL-1, may contribute to tumor development by the downregulation of p53 by a negative feedback mechanism.

Abstract
PURPOSE Homozygous polymorphism of the 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene and resultant hyperhomocysteinaemia have been established as an independent risk factor for vascular diseases. There are evidences that vascular abnormalities are involved in the pathogenesis and progression of normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). In the present study, we were to find out the associations between 677C>T and 1298A>C polymorphisms of the MTHFR gene and NTG. METHODS This was a retrospective, case-controlled study enrolling 78 NTG patients and 100 controls. DNA from peripheral blood lymphocytes was extracted and the genotypes of polymorphisms (677C>T and 1298A>C) in the MTHFR gene were determined using PCR followed by restriction enzyme digestion. The frequencies of the polymorphic genotypes in the patients with NTG and controls were compared. RESULTS The frequencies of the polymorphisms of the MTHFR gene (677C>T and 1298A>C) in the NTG patients were not significantly different from those of controls. But the younger NTG patients (age at diagnosis < or = 45 years) showed significantly higher prevalence of 677C>T polymorphism than the older NTG patients (age at diagnosis > 45 years) (TT genotype, 38.9 vs 11.9%, P=0.006, OR=4.71, 95% CI=1.49-14.9) and than the younger control subgroup (TT genotype, 38.9 vs 6.1%, P=0.001, OR=9.86, 95% CI=2.23-42.4). CONCLUSIONS The 677C>T polymorphism was significantly associated with NTG in the younger patients, while 1298A>C polymorphism was not. This suggests that 677C>T polymorphism of the MTHFR gene can be a genetic risk factor of NTG in Korean population.

Abstract
Ectopic Cushing's syndrome due to various malignancies is not uncommon. However, a few cases of ectopic Cushing's syndrome caused by corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), or CRH with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) have been reported. A 28-year-old woman presented with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding caused by an active ulcer, located atypically in the 2nd portion of duodenum. Further work-up revealed high gastrin levels and abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans showed a large pancreatic head mass with multiple liver metastases. The serum cortisol and ACTH levels were checked due to hypokalemia with metabolic alkalosis and recent amenorrhea. Cortisol and ACTH were both highly elevated with pituitary hyperplasia and elevated CRH. The existence of ectopic ACTH and CRH in the liver biopsy was also demonstrated immunohistochemically. Since an operation was not feasible, chemotherapy was conducted using paclitaxel and etoposide. These two drugs were chosen according to the IN VITRO chemotherapy response assay to maximize the treatment. This report demonstrates concurrent ACTH- and CRH-related ectopic Cushing's syndrome caused by malignant gastrinoma with multiple liver metastases that was treated with marginal success using a multidisciplinary medical approach.

Abstract
Quantitative analysis of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) defect is prerequisite in the early detection and management of glaucoma. A new automatic quantification method to evaluate the degree of RNLF defect has been proposed in this paper. Simple image processing technique is applied to locate optic disc and intensity of the pixels around optic disc is plotted. The area with RNFL defect can be easily determined by comparing the intensity plot of the RNFL and the first derivative of the intensity plot. Through analysis of the plot, thickness of RNFL also can be postulated.

Abstract
Multiferroic materials, which offer the possibility of manipulating the magnetic state by an electric field or vice versa, are of great current interest. In this work, we demonstrate the first observation of electrical control of antiferromagnetic domain structure in a single-phase multiferroic material at room temperature. High-resolution images of both antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric domain structures of (001)-oriented multiferroic BiFeO3 films revealed a clear domain correlation, indicating a strong coupling between the two types of order. The ferroelectric structure was measured using piezo force microscopy, whereas X-ray photoemission electron microscopy as well as its temperature dependence was used to detect the antiferromagnetic configuration. Antiferromagnetic domain switching induced by ferroelectric polarization switching was observed, in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract
We demonstrated that ultraviolet Raman spectroscopy is an effective technique to measure the transition temperature (Tc) in ferroelectric ultrathin films and superlattices. We showed that one-unit-cell-thick BaTiO3 layers in BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices are not only ferroelectric (with Tc as high as 250 kelvin) but also polarize the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 layers adjacent to them. Tc was tuned by approximately 500 kelvin by varying the thicknesses of the BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 layers, revealing the essential roles of electrical and mechanical boundary conditions for nanoscale ferroelectricity.

Abstract
Using in situ high-resolution synchrotron x-ray scattering, the Curie temperature TC has been determined for ultrathin c-axis epitaxial PbTiO3 films on conducting substrates (SrRuO3 on SrTiO3), with surfaces exposed to a controlled vapor environment. The suppression of TC was relatively small, even for the thinnest film (1.2 nm). We observe that 180 degrees stripe domains do not form, indicating that the depolarizing field is compensated by free charge at both interfaces. This is confirmed by ab initio calculations that find polar ground states in the presence of ionic adsorbates.

Abstract
During the past decade, obesity has substantially increased in Korea, and this is leading to dramatic increases in complications such as type 2 diabetes. In this review, we discuss the past and the current situation of obesity in Korea based on the national health and nutrition surveys of 1995, 1998, and 2001. Because Korea is geographically isolated with relatively few migrants and has a low level of genetic heterogeneity, this report demonstrates the impact of environmental factors on the development of obesity beyond epidemiological information about one of the Asian countries. The third national health and nutrition survey reported in 2001 announced that the overall prevalence of obesity [body mass index (BMI) > or = 25.0 kg m(-2)] in Korean adults is 30.6% (32.4% in men and 29.4% in women). The prevalence of obesity in adults and children has increased rapidly from 1990s through the beginning of the new millennium and is steadily increasing in parallel with our rapid socio-economic progress. In particular, special attention should be paid to two groups in hormonal transition: first, middle-aged men and women who experience a great increase in body weight, BMI and waist circumference because of andropause or menopause, and second, adolescents in middle to high school who are preparing for qualification or entrance examinations and are prone to overnutrition or nutritional imbalance and physical inactivity.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sibutramine on body composition and fat distribution, insulin resistance, and serum adiponectin levels in obese women. A total of 28 obese, premenopausal women (mean age, 34.5 +/- 13.7 years; BMI, 31.00 +/- 4.10 kg/m2) was studied before and after 12-week-course of sibutramine (10mg/day). Sibutramine treatment reduced body mass index (P < 0.05) and total body fat (P < 0.05). Abdominal subcutaneous and visceral fat areas (ASFA and AVFA) and mid-thigh low density muscle areas (LDMA) measured by computed-tomography decreased significantly (all, P < 0.05). Insulin resistance (IR) calculated from the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) method decreased (P < 0.05) and serum adiponectin levels increased significantly (P < 0.05). In our sequential data, the changes of fasting serum insulin levels and the HOMA-IR scores, serum free fatty acids and triglyceride levels, serum adiponectin levels and the mid-thigh LDMA preceded significant changes of body weight, total body fat, and abdominal fat distribution, suggesting sibutramine might improve insulin sensitivity directly by alterations of fatty acid metabolism or secondarily by increasing serum adiponectin levels. Conclusively, sibutramine improved fat distribution and insulin resistance, and increased serum adiponectin levels in Korean obese nondiabetic premenopausal women.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to investigate diverse risk factors affecting the progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN) by observing the changes of 24 h urinary albumin excretion (24 h UAE) in 90 abdominally obese, normal weight, type 2 diabetic patients with normo- or micro-albuminuria. Patients were divided into three groups according to the 24h UAE; normo-, micro-, and macro-albuminuria group. After 4 years of follow-up, patients were divided into either progression or non-progression group according to the changes of 24 h UAE. About 37% of the normo-albuminuria group and 18% of the micro-albumiuria group were classified into the progression group. The initial serum creatinine levels and the initial and follow-up post-prandial plasma glucose levels were significantly higher in the progression group than in the non-progression group. Most remarkably, the initial and follow-up serum triglyceride (TG) levels (190 +/- 132 versus 132 +/- 49 mg/dl and 191 +/- 124 versus 133 +/- 41 mg/dl, P < 0.01 in both) were significantly higher in the progression group than in the non-progression group, suggesting hypertriglyceridemia might be included in the progression factors of DN. The increases in 24-hour UAE were positively associated with the initial and follow-up post-prandial plasma glucose levels (P < 0.05 in both), the initial and follow-up serum creatinine levels (P < 0.05 in both), and the initial serum TG levels (P < 0.05). Whereas, insulin users or patients with retinopathy at follow-up (P < 0.05 in both) showed more rapid progression of albuminuria, ACE inhibitors or acarbose (P < 0.05 in both) use turned out to protect against it.

Abstract
AIMS First-degree relatives of patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are often reported to be insulin resistant. We wanted to identify early metabolic abnormalities in this condition, and determine whether they are altered by regular physical training. METHODS We measured insulin sensitivity using the euglycaemic glucose clamp technique and insulin response to oral glucose in 10 unfit (did not participate in routine physical exercise) offspring of T2DM parents and 10 unfit control subjects, and compared them with six fit (routinely swam for 3 h/day 5 days/week) offspring of T2DM parents and six fit controls with no family history of T2DM. RESULTS Unfit offspring had a higher plasma glucose response than the other three groups. The mean area under the glucose curve was also significantly higher in unfit offspring than in the other three groups (12.6 +/- 0.6 vs. 10.4 +/- 0.4, 9.6 +/- 0.5, and 9.5 +/- 0.7 mmol/l per hour for the unfit controls, fit offspring and fit controls, respectively; P < 0.05). The corresponding insulin response of unfit offspring was significantly higher at 60 min in the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) that that of fit offspring or fit controls. In addition, the mean area under the insulin curve was significantly greater in unfit offspring than in either fit offspring or fit controls (868 +/- 172 vs. 294 +/- 71, 287 +/- 43 mmol/l per hour, respectively; P < 0.05). Moreover, the glucose disposal rate (GDR), measured using a euglycaemic clamp, was significantly lower in unfit and fit offspring than in unfit and fit controls (5.6 +/- 0.3 vs. 8.6 +/- 0.3 mg/kg per minute; P < 0.01 and 9.3 +/- 0.9 vs. 12.1 +/- 0.8 mg/kg per minute, respectively; P < 0.015), whereas the GDR was similar in unfit controls and fit offspring (8.6 +/- 0.4 vs. 9.3 +/- 0.9 mg/kg per minute; P > 0.05). CONCLUSION These results support the concept that early metabolic abnormalities, as reflected by a decreased GDR (insulin sensitivity) in the offspring of T2DM patients, may be improved by increased physical fitness.

Abstract
AIM To compare the pattern of localised nerve fibre layer (NFL) defects in normal tension glaucoma (NTG) and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS 50 NTG eyes and 36 POAG eyes, all with localised NFL defects, were enrolled. On retinal NFL photography, the proximity of the defect to the centre of the fovea (angle alpha) and the sum of the angular width of the defects (angle beta) were determined. Angle alpha was the angle made by a line from the centre of the fovea to the disc centre and a line from the disc centre to the disc margin, where the nearest border of the defect met. The patterns of localised NFL defects in NTG and POAG were compared with angles alpha and beta. Independent t test was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Angle alpha in NTG (35.1 (SD 20.0) degrees ) was significantly smaller than that of POAG (45.9 (21.9) degrees ) (p=0.02), while angle beta in NTG (49.0 (31.9) degrees ) was significantly larger than that of POAG (33.1 (23.9) degrees ) (p=0.01). CONCLUSIONS The pattern of NFL defects in NTG was different from that in POAG. Localised NFL defects in NTG were closer to the fovea and wider in width than those in POAG.

Abstract
A new approach for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) regeneration in a cell-free protein synthesis system is described. We first show that pyruvate can be used as a secondary energy source to replace or supplement the conventional secondary energy source, phosphoenol pyruvate (PEP). We also report that glucose-6-phosphate, an earlier intermediate of the glycolytic pathway, can be used for ATP regeneration. These new methods provide more stable maintenance of ATP concentration during protein synthesis. Because pyruvate and glucose-6-phosphate are the first and last intermediates of the glycolytic pathway, respectively, the results also suggest the possibility of using any glycolytic intermediate, or even glucose, for ATP regeneration in a cell-free protein synthesis system. As a result, the methods described provide cell-free protein synthesis with greater flexibility and cost efficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Safe blood donation depends upon reliable predonation Hct screening. Earstick (ES) capillary samples are frequently used, but they may not be accurate. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Predonation ES and fingerstick (FS) and postdonation venous Hct results were compared in 1960 whole-blood and 210 apheresis donors. The validity of using postdonation venous samples to evaluate predonation ES and FS Hct was assessed in 20 whole-blood donors. The impact of Hct screening method on donor Hct deferrals was examined during periods when either ES or FS sampling was used exclusively. RESULTS All donors were eligible to donate on the basis of a predonation capillary Hct of > or = 38 percent. In venous samples obtained immediately after donation, 36 percent of whole-blood donors had a Hct <38 percent. With correction for a decrease of approximately 2 Hct units during donation, 20 percent of these donors had a predonation Hct <38 percent. The lowest venous Hct was 23.1 percent. FS samples showed better correlation with venous Hct. Hct discrepancies were similar for apheresis donors. Hct deferrals were significantly higher with FS sampling, especially among women. CONCLUSION Hct determinations from ES samples overestimate venous Hct. Fingerstick samples are more sensitive in detecting anemia. The accuracy of predonation Hct sampling has implications for donor safety, eligibility, and deferral rates.

Abstract
Since observable retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) atrophy occures several years before irreversible glaucomatous visual field damage in glaucoma patients, quantitative assessment of the diffuse RNFL atrophy has been the goal of many research efforts. The loss of RNFL reflectance is informative sign of the diffuse RNFL atrophy, and appears in monochrome photograph of RNFL. We have, therefore, made a system by which we could measure the loss of RNFL reflectance and named it Computerized Densitometric Measurement System (CDMS). In this method, density profiles concentric with optical disc are extracted from the digitalized RNFL photograph. Density integral of superior and inferior segments in the density profile is used for the assessment of RNFL atrophy. Satisfactory results were obtained about the clinical utility of this method when the CDMS measurement was compared with the indicator of loss of visual function. Intra- and inter-operator reproducibility was also excellent.

Abstract
This research was conducted to understand the effects of heat processing and storage on flavanols and sensory qualities of green tea extract. Fresh tea leaves were processed into steamed and roasted green teas by commercial methods and then extracted with hot water (80 degrees C) at 1:160 ratio (tea leaves/water by weight). Green tea extracts were heat processed at 121 degrees C for 1 min and then stored at 50 degrees C to accelerate chemical reactions. Changes in flavanol composition and sensory qualities of green tea extracts during processing and storage were measured. Eight major flavanols (catechin, epicatechin, gallocatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, catechin gallate, epigallocatechin gallate, and gallocatechin gallate) were identified in the processed tea extract. Among them, epigallocatechin gallate and epigallocatechin appeared to play the key role in the changes of sensory qualities of processed green tea beverage. The steamed tea leaves produced a more desirable quality of processed green tea beverage than the roasted ones.

Abstract
Streptokinase is a plasminogen activator protein produced by several strains of beta-hemolytic streptococci. Random mutagenesis of streptokinase was carried out for the determination of critical amino acid residues in plasminogen activation. We selected and sequenced 14 streptokinase mutants with no plasminogen activation activity on skim milk-plasminogen overlay plate. Specific activities of the selected streptokinase mutants were determined with chromogenic assay. Eight mutants (V19F, V35E, E85D, L292R, D325P, D341E, I345N, and M369L) resulted in greatly decreased amidolytic activities. However, unexpectedly, six mutants (D41C, S44K, S44P, R45P, H48T, and D220G) showed substantial amidolytic activities comparable to that of wild type. Moreover, five-point mutations were concentrated on the Asp41-His48 region. These data indicate that the Asp41-His48 region in a streptokinase-plasminogen binary complex plays an important role in binding to a substrate plasminogen.

Abstract
Factors causing the early cessation of protein synthesis have been studied in a cell-free system from Escherichia coli. We discovered that phosphoenol pyruvate (PEP), the secondary energy source for ATP regeneration, and several amino acids are rapidly degraded during the cell-free protein synthesis reaction. The degradation of such compounds takes place even in the absence of protein synthesis. This degradation severely reduces the capacity for protein synthesis. The lost potency was completely recovered when the reaction mixture was supplied with additional PEP and amino acids. Of the 20 amino acids, only arginine, cysteine, and tryptophan were required to restore system activity. Through repeated additions of PEP, arginine, cysteine,and tryptophan, the duration of protein synthesis was greatly extended. In this fed-batch reaction, after a 2 h incubation, the level of cell-free synthesized chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT) reached 350 microg/mL, which is 3.5 times the yield of the batch reaction. Addition of fresh magnesium further extended the protein synthesis. As a result, through coordinated additions of PEP, arginine, cysteine, tryptophan, and magnesium, the final concentration of cell-free synthesized CAT increased more than 4-fold compared to a batch reaction. SDS-PAGE analysis of such a fed-batch reaction produced an obvious band of CAT upon Coomassie Blue staining.

Abstract
Polyethylene oxide (PEO) surfaces were prepared by the addition of PEO-containing amphiphilic block copolymers as surface modifying additives and of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as a crosslinking agent in segmented polyurethane (PU). PEO-polypropylene oxide-PEO triblock copolymers (Pluronics) with different PEO chain length (from 0 to 98) were used as the surface modifying additives. The PEO additives in the PU film were then crosslinked to be stably entrapped in the PU matrix. The crosslinking was done by free radicals produced from the decomposition of DCP in the film through heating (120 degrees C) or ultraviolet irradiation (254 nm). The surface properties of the PEO additive-entrapped PU films were investigated by the measurement of water contact angles and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. The bulk properties such as water absorption, long-term film stability, and tensile strength and elongation at break, were also investigated. It was observed that addition of a small amount (5 wt% based on PU) of the PEO additives resulted in a considerable change of surface characteristics. The PEO additives were stably entrapped in the PU films by crosslinking of them, without significant changes of bulk properties of the films. From the platelet adhesion test on the prepared PEO additive-containing film surfaces, it was observed that the platelet adhesion on the surfaces decreases with increase in PEO chain length of PEO additives. The film surface containing additive with long PEO chains (chain length of 98) was particularly effective in preventing platelet adhesion. The crosslinking of the PEO additives in PU films did not affect the behavior of platelet adhesion on the surfaces; the films with crosslinked PEO additives showed similar platelet adhesion on the surfaces to the films with uncrosslinked ones.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the possibility that an elevation of glutamate levels in the vitreous might be associated with the microvascular compromise of the optic nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS Endothelin-1, 0.1 microg/d (5 rabbits), or balanced salt solution (4 rabbits) was delivered to the perineural region of the anterior optic nerve by osmotically driven minipumps for 2 weeks. Vitreous specimens were obtained, and their amino acid contents were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS There was a statistically significant elevation in the mean +/- SEM vitreous concentrations of glutamate (264% +/-41%; P = .04), aspartate (269% +/-31%; P = .04), and glycine (232% +/-26%; P = .04) in the eyes subjected to endothelin-1 when compared with the fellow control eyes. CONCLUSION Administration of endothelin-1 to the microvasculature of the optic nerve leads to elevation of glutamate, aspartate, and glycine concentrations in the vitreous. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The increase of excitatory amino acids in the vitreous might be associated with various ischemic processes of the optic nerve, including glaucomatous optic neuropathy, and may play a role in the neuronal damage that is seen in these diseases.

Abstract
Staphylokinase (SAK), a polypeptide secreted by Staphylococcus aureus, is a plasminogen activator with a therapeutic potential in thrombosis diseases. A Bacillus subtilis strain which is multiply deficient in exoproteases was transformed by an expression plasmid carrying a promoter and a signal sequence of subtilisin fused in frame with the sak open reading frame. However, the amount of SAK secretion was marginal (45 mg/liter). In contrast, disruption of the wprA gene, which encodes a subtilisin-type protease, strongly promoted the production of SAK in the stationary phase (181 mg/liter). In addition, the extracellular stability of mature SAK was dramatically enhanced. These data indicate a significant role of the wprA gene product in degrading foreign proteins, both during secretion and in the extracellular milieu.

Abstract
A new approach for the regeneration of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) during cell-free protein synthesis was developed to prolong the synthesis and also to avoid the accumulation of inorganic phosphate. This approach was demonstrated in a batch system derived from Escherichia coli. Contrary to the conventional methods in which exogenous energy sources contain high-energy phosphate bonds, the new system was designed to generate continuously the required high-energy phosphate bonds within the reaction mixture, thereby recycling the phosphate released during protein synthesis. If allowed to accumulate, phosphate inhibits protein synthesis, most likely by reducing the concentration of free magnesium ion. Pediococcus sp. pyruvate oxidase, when introduced in the reaction mixture along with thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), catalyzed the generation of acetyl phosphate from pyruvate and inorganic phosphate. Acetyl kinase, already present with sufficient activity in Escherichia coli S30 extract, then catalyzed the regeneration of ATP. Oxygen is required for the generation of acetyl phosphate and the H(2)O(2) produced as a byproduct is sufficiently degraded by endogenous catalase activity. Through the continuous supply of chemical energy, and also through the prevention of inorganic phosphate accumulation, the duration of protein synthesis is extended up to 2 h. Protein accumulation levels also increase. The synthesis of human lymphotoxin receives greater benefit than than that of chloramphenicol acetyl transferase, because the former is more sensitive to phosphate inhibition. Finally, through repeated addition of pyruvate and amino acids during the reaction period, protein synthesis continued for 6 h in the new system, resulting in a final yield of 0.7 mg/mL.

Abstract
Surface-induced thrombosis remains one of the main problems in the development of blood-contacting devices. When a foreign surface comes in contact with blood, the initial blood response is adsorption of blood proteins, followed by platelet adhesion and activation, leading to thrombus formation. A particularly effective polymer for the prevention of protein adsorption and platelet adhesion appears to be polyethylene oxide (PEO). In this study, water-insoluble copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methoxy PEO monomethacrylates (MPEOMA) with different PEO molecular weights (200, 400, and 1000) and monomer composition were synthesized and characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The synthesized copolymers were coated on glass slides by a spin coating method to prepare PEO-rich surfaces as blood-compatible surfaces. The surface properties of the copolymers and their interaction with blood proteins (albumin, gamma-globulin, fibrinogen, and plasma proteins) were investigated by the measurement of water contact angles and by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, respectively. It was observed that the protein adsorption on the copolymer surfaces decreased with increasing PEO molecular weight and MPEOMA content in the copolymers. The copolymers with long PEO chains in MPEOMA (MMA/MPEO1000MA copolymers) were effective in preventing protein adsorption, even though their MPEOMA content was less than the copolymers with shorter PEO chains.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the effect of trans scleral cyclophotocoagulation (TSCPC) on intraocular pressure (IOP) in the eyes retaining intravitreal silicone oil with medically uncontrolled secondary glaucoma following intravitreal silicone oil injection. METHODS Medical records of 11 eyes of 11 patients who underwent TSCPC for medically uncontrolled glaucoma without pupillary block following intravitreal silicone oil injection for complicated retinal detachment were reviewed retrospectively. In all cases, intravitreal silicone oil was not removed for fear of retinal redetachment. Diode laser contact TSCPC was performed at a power of 1.5-2.5 W, for a duration of 2 seconds, and with 20-27 applications. IOP, number of glaucoma medications, and success rate were evaluated. RESULTS After a mean follow up period of 52.5 (SD 8.2) (range 42-68) weeks, the mean pretreatment level of IOP, 43.0 (14.4) (26-67) mmHg, had fallen to 14.5 (4.3) (7-20) mm Hg (p=0.003). The number of glaucoma medications was reduced from 2.6 (0.8) to 0.6 (1.0) (p= 0.005). Qualified success was achieved in nine eyes (81.8%) and complete success in six (54.5%). After TSCPC, patients' retinal status had not changed. CONCLUSION Patients with medically uncontrolled glaucoma secondary to intravitreal silicone oil injection can be treated with TSCPC in spite of the retained intravitreal silicone oil.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review preclinical and clinical information related to pharmacologic modulation of dopamine D2 receptors as potential novel antipsychotic therapy. Specifically, to summarize the data that suggest a modulatory action of adenosine A2A receptors on dopamine D2 receptors and, therefore, a possible rational role of adenosine A2A agonists as novel antipsychotic agents. DATA SOURCES Primary and review articles were identified by MEDLINE search (from 1966 to May 1998) and through secondary sources. STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION All of the articles identified from the data sources were evaluated and all information deemed relevant was included in this review. DATA SYNTHESIS For all of the older and many of the newer antipsychotic agents, there is a strong correlation between clinical antipsychotic activity and affinity for dopamine D2 receptors. Unfortunately, dopamine D2 receptors are believed to also be involved in the adverse effect profile of these agents. The indirect modulation of dopamine D2 receptors, rather than direct block, might produce antipsychotic effects without the usual adverse reactions. Several lines of evidence from animal studies suggest that the use of selective A2A agonists might represent a novel approach to the treatment of psychoses. CONCLUSIONS Dopamine receptor modulation might represent a novel antipsychotic approach or adjunct therapy. The data regarding adenosine agonists (particularly selective A2A receptor agonists) are inconclusive at the present time. Direct clinical demonstration of effectiveness is required.

Abstract
AIMS To examine the effects of 0.5% apraclonidine on optic nerve head (ONH) and peripapillary retinal blood flow by scanning laser Doppler flowmetry (SLDF). METHODS ONH and peripapillary retinal blood flow of 17 healthy subjects were measured by SLDF before and 1 hour and 3 hours after unilateral administration of 0.5% apraclonidine. The fellow eyes were treated with balanced salt solution and the examiners were masked as to which eye was treated with apraclonidine. On each occasion, three scans were obtained and haemodynamic variables (volume, flow, and velocity) were analysed at eight locations, four in the neural rim and four in the peripapillary retina, avoiding ophthalmoscopically visible vessels. The statistical significance of changes from the baseline value of variables and the differences in the measured quantities between apraclonidine treated eyes and fellow eyes at each time point were evaluated using Wilcoxon signed rank test. RESULTS The intraocular pressure was reduced significantly in apraclonidine treated eyes by 15.0% (p = 0.001) at 1 hour and 30.0% (p = 0.000) at 3 hours after administration. In the volume, flow, or velocity of ONH and peripapillary retinal blood flow, there were no significant changes from the baseline values at 1 hour and 3 hours after apraclonidine administration in either apraclonidine treated eyes (p > 0.4) or fellow eyes (p > 0.2). Also, no significant differences were found in the measured quantities between apraclonidine treated eyes and fellow eyes at each time point (p > 0.1). CONCLUSION A single dose of topical apraclonidine 0.5% in healthy subjects does not have adverse effects on the ONH and peripapillary retinal blood flow.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES In contrast to the literature on enucleation, reports of hydroxyapatite (HA) implantation during evisceration are limited; however, those that have been published mention the high HA exposure rate. The authors examined the scleral quadrisection procedure to evaluate its effect on cosmetic appearance and the prevention of HA exposure after evisceration. PATIENTS AND METHODS The authors analyzed the surgical outcomes of 17 patients who had undergone an HA implantation with scleral quadrisection after evisceration between November 1994 and November 1995. RESULTS In each case, the authors were able to use HA implants of 18 mm or more. During follow-up (average 10.7 months), there were no cases of conjunctival erosion, HA exposure, implant migration, significant enophthalmos, or superior sulcus deformity. All of the patients, 7 of whom had a ball- and-socket prosthesis, were satisfied with their cosmetic appearance and prosthetic motility. More than 11 weeks after evisceration, all 10 studied patients had complete, round uptakes with orbital bone SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography). CONCLUSION For good cosmetic appearance and for the prevention of implant exposure, scleral quadrisection is a safe and effective procedure for HA implantation after evisceration.

Abstract
Using Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT, Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) we investigated whether reversal of glaucomatous optic disc cupping occurs in adult glaucoma patients following intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction by trabeculectomy, and whether topographic change in the optic disc differs according to region. Thirteen eyes of 13 glaucoma patients in whom IOP reduction was 25% or more at postoperative follow-up of 2 months were enrolled in the study. Cup/disc area ratio had decreased significantly, while rim area and rim volume showed significant increases (p < 0.05, Wilcoxon signed rank test). Among the optic disc sectors, rim area in the superior and inferior quadrants, especially in the superotemporal and inferotemporal octant, had increased significantly. The decrease in maximum cup death correlated significantly with the recent IOP reduction (r = 0.698, p = 0.016). Reversal of glaucomatous disc cupping after IOP reduction following trabeculectomy in adult patients as confirmed by HRT. Furthermore, the regions of selective reversal in the superior and inferior quadrants coincided with those parts of the optic nerve head in which early functional and structural glaucomatous damage has been known to occur.
