Abstract
Molybdenum(V)-mediated cleavage of C(sp2)-Se bond and C(sp2)-H bond as well as intramolecular oxidative C(sp2)-Se coupling reaction of phenylselenyl-functionalized arenes or heterocycles has been developed. Three kinds of benzoselenophene frameworks were constructed through this reaction with yields up to 94%. This new C(sp2)-Se bond-switching methodology may provide a new strategy for interesting applications of phenylselenyl-substituted aromatic compounds in the synthesis of selenium-containing heterocycles and natural products.

Waste gas emissions, air pollution treatment, and industrial profit: evidence from China and global implications of green development. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2023; 30:12644-12657. Abstract
This paper proposes a simple model to theoretically analyze the impacts of emissions of waste gases on industrial profit and mainly finds that industrial producers yield products to pursue profit but emit waste gases, protecting atmospheric environment demands for decline in waste gases, emissions impact profit when the process of production is altered as result of public regulations, and actively treating emissions ease the distortions of production and maintain profit. As a comparison, industrial profit is not impacted by emissions when producers are allowed to emit freely. After theoretical analysis, this study also empirically tests the relationship between the emissions of waste gases and profit as evidenced in China and finds that emissions do not significantly impact profit, except for sulfur dioxide with significantly negative impact; industrial producers with increased capacity for treating waste gases obtained more profits. As a result, the cost expended on treating pollution was compensated in the Chinese industrial sector. Successfully declining waste gases for atmospheric environmental protection and maintaining industrial profit for economic output and social development in the Chinese local economy has global implications because many other countries and regions primarily pursue green and sustainable development.

Green effects of research and development on industrial waste reduction during the production phase: Evidence from China and policy implications. Front Public Health 2022; 10:1000393. [PMID: 36339166 PMCID: PMC9631482 DOI: 10.3389/fpubh.2022.1000393] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/22/2022] [Accepted: 10/05/2022] [Indexed: 01/26/2023] Open
Abstract
Maintaining public health requires a clean environment; however, some industrial wastes can damage the water, atmosphere, and living environment seriously. To promote green development, policy makers in China have developed and implemented strict environmental regulations to limit the pollutant emissions and improve the environmental quality. Industrial producers implement research and development (R&D) activities to gain more profits in competitive markets. A comprehensive understanding of the green effects of R&D on different industrial wastes could provide important policy recommendations, especially regarding the coordination of innovative and green developments. In this study, the author empirically analyzed the influence of R&D input, including the intramural expenditure on R&D and full-time equivalent of R&D personnel, on industrial wastes, including the discharge of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen, emission of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, and generation of common industrial solid and hazardous wastes, based on the data from Chinese industrial sectors for 2016-2020. The main findings of empirical analyses were robust and indicated that R&D activities significantly reduced the emissions of all three industrial waste gases and decreased the discharge of COD; however, in the case of China, the partial effects on the discharge of ammonia nitrogen and the industrial solid wastes were not statistically significant. The green effects of R&D on different industrial wastes may vary and generally depend on environmental regulations, with various limitations. The most viable policy recommendations indicate that by expanding and initiating the green effect of R&D on different industrial wastes, innovative and green developments are more likely to be achieved in a coordinated manner. Additionally, this can also support special R&D activities, with the added benefit of actively developing cleaner technology to treat pollutant emissions. Development, while maintaining a clean environment to ensure public health, could be more sustainable if innovative activities reduce the production of industrial wastes. This study analyzes the green effects of R&D on industrial waste and can serve as a viable framework for future studies on sustainable development.

Abstract
This paper mainly introduces and studies public objectives and instruments in educational policies that authorities can use to improve and evaluate the quality of postgraduate cultivation in China. Under the political environment in the state, the standard for the quality of postgraduate education first includes graduate students in higher education institutions who support the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), educational authorities formulate, and implement policies and regulations surrounding postgraduate education under the leadership of the Party committees as well. From the political perspective, moral cultivation should become an important indicator in the evaluation of the quality of postgraduate education. Specific policy instruments including examination and admission systems, graduation requirements, and performance evaluations are designed to increase knowledge and academic skills or allow students to better perform work in their future careers. Although these policy instruments have played some roles in improving the quality of postgraduate cultivation in practice, some associated social negative phenomena also appear in the field, such as academic misconduct, excessive academic and psychological pressure of postgraduate students, etc. The moral cultivation and psychological health should be measured and assessed while evaluating the quality of postgraduate education. The public objectives surrounding the higher education in political level could provide some useful and constructive recommendations to improve the evaluation system that guides the development of postgraduate education.

Abstract
An Ag-catalysed three-component reaction of alkynyl aryl ketones bearing an ortho-methoxy group, element selenium, and arylboronic acid, providing a facile route to selenofunctionalized chromone products has been developed. This protocol features high efficiency and high regioselectivity, and the use of selenium powder as the selenium source. Mechanistic experiments indicated that the combined oxidative effect of (bis(trifluoroacetoxy)iodo)benzene and oxygen in the air pushes the catalytic redox cycle of the Ag catalyst and the phenylselenium trifluoroacetate formed in situ is the key intermediate of the PIFA-mediated 6-endo-electrophilic cyclization and selenofunctionalization reaction of alkynyl aryl ketones.

Abstract
Background Little is known on how to reduce the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence post liver transplantation (LT). We examined if adjuvant oral Capecitabine reduces the risk of recurrent HCC in a high-risk group post-LT. Aims To examine if adjuvant oral Capecitabine reduces the risk of recurrent HCC in a high-risk group post-LT. Methods A retrospective study was performed from a pre-existing liver transplant database from the Liver Transplant Unit at London Health Sciences Center, London; Canada. This database contains demographic, clinical parameters and follow-up of all patients transplanted for HCC. Data was extracted for patients who underwent LT between January 2000 – April 2018 and included follow up until May 31st, 2020. High-risk of tumor recurrence was defined as a RETREAT score ≥5 or PARFITT score ≥10.5. Log rank test compared the recurrence of HCC or death among patients who were and were not prescribed Capecitabine. Results Out of 168 LT for HCC, 25 patients were identified as high-risk group for recurrence. The median age was 63 years (IQR=60–65). 19 (76%) patients had viral hepatitis including Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C as their primary disease while 4 (16%) patients had NASH. The remaining 2 (8%) patients had Autoimmune Hepatitis. 7 (28%) patients received Capecitabine while 18 (72%) did not. All patients were followed for a median of 22 months (IQR=8.9–57.5). No statistical significance difference was found between the two groups with respect to HCC recurrence or death (p=0.56). Conclusions Among patients with high risk features for recurrence of HCC, adding Capecitabine therapy added to conventional immunosuppression had no overall effect on reducing overall tumor recurrence or survival. Abstract
At present, supervised person re-identification method achieves high identification performance. However, there are a lot of cross cameras with unlabeled data in the actual application scenarios. The high cost of marking data will greatly reduce the effect of the supervised learning model transferring to other scene domains. Therefore, unsupervised learning of person re-identification becomes more attractive in the real world. In addition, due to changes in camera angle, illumination and posture, the extracted person image representation is generally different in the non-cross camera view, but the existing algorithm ignores the difference among cross camera images under camera parameters and environments. In order to overcome the above problems, we propose unsupervised person re-identification metric learning method. The model learns a shared space to reduce the discrepancy under different cameras. The graph convolution network is further employed to cluster the cross-view image features extracted from the shared space. Our model improves the scalability of pedestrian re-identification in practical application scenarios. Extensive experiments on four large-scale person re-identification public datasets have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Abstract
In order to discover and develop the new HIV-1 NNRTIs, a series of 5-alkyl-6-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-ylalkyl)-2-mercaptopyrimidin-4(3H)-ones was synthesized and screened for their in vitro cytotoxicity against HIV-1. Most of the compounds we synthetized showed high activity against wild-type HIV-1 strain (IIIB) while IC50 values are in the range of 0.06-12.95 μM. Among them, the most active HIV-1 inhibitor was compound 6-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-ylmethyl)-5-ethyl-2-((2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxoethyl)thio)pyrimidin-4(3H)-one (5b), which exhibited similar HIV-1 inhibitory potency (IC50 = 0.06 μM, CC50 = 96.23 μM) compared with nevirapine (IC50 = 0.04 μM, CC50 >200 μM) and most of compounds exhibited submicromolar IC50 values indicating they were specific RT inhibitors. The compounds 5b, 6-(benzo[d] [1,3]dioxol-5-yl)-5-ethyl-2-((2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxoethyl)thio)pyrimidin-4(3H)-one (5c) and 4-(2-((4-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-ylmethyl)-5-ethyl-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-2-yl)thio)acetyl)phenylbenzo[d][1,3]dioxole-5-carboxylate (5r) were selected for further study. It was found that all of them had little toxicity to peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC), and had a good inhibitory effect on the replication of HIV-1 protease inhibitor resistant strains, fusion inhibitor resistant strains and nucleosides reverse transcriptase inhibitor resistant strains, as well as on clinical isolates. Besides, compound 5b and 5c showed inhibition of HIV-1 RT RNA-dependent DNA polymerization activity and DNA-dependent DNA polymerization activity, while compound 5r only showed inhibition of HIV DNA-dependent DNA polymerization activity, which was different from classical reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Our study which offered the preliminary structure-activity relationships and modeling studies of these new compounds has provided the valuable avenues for future molecular optimization.

Controlling the selectivity of an intramolecular Friedel-Crafts alkylation with alkenes using selenium under mild conditions. Org Biomol Chem 2020; 18:4034-4045. Abstract
An efficiently divergent intramolecular Friedel-Crafts alkylation by unactivated alkenes with seleniranium ion-controlled Markovnikov/anti-Markovnikov specificities under mild conditions has been investigated. 2-Benzoxepin, isochroman, and isochromene can be produced in one-pot procedures from the same substrate in high yields and with high regio- and stereospecificity. The products are challenging to access via 7-endo-trig carbocyclizations and by 7-endo-trig carbocyclization/rearrangement/6-exo-trig oxycyclization and 6-exo-trig carbocyclization/deselenenylation reaction sequences, respectively. Mechanistic experiments indicated that in addition to the stereospecific anti-addition processes of the cyclization reactions, the formation of a stable carbocation after ring opening of the seleniranium ion leads to an NPSP-mediated 7-endo-trig carbocyclization; the steric hindrance of the seleniranium intermediate controls the regioselectivity when using TPSCA at 60 °C, which promotes 6-exo-trig carbocyclization. Two distinct catalytic cycles were proposed, and the structures of transition states and products were identified by ab initio calculations and X-ray analyses.

Abstract
Angiogenesis is recognized as a sign of cancer and facilitates cancer progression and metastasis. Suppression of angiogenesis is a desirable strategy for gastric cancer (GC) management. In this study, we showed a novel role of gastrin in angiogenesis of GC. We observed that treatment with gastrin 17 (G17) increased the proliferation of AGS cells and enhanced tube formation during normoxia and hypoxia. The expression level of VEGF were increased by G17 treatment as well. Experiments on the mechanism showed that G17 promoted HIF-1α expression, which subsequently enhanced β-catenin nuclear localization and activation of TCF3 and LEF1 and finally resulted in angiogenesis by upregulating VEGF. An in vivo experiment confirmed that G17 enhanced GC cell proliferation and angiogenesis in the resultant tumor. In conclusion, our findings indicate that gastrin promotes angiogenesis via activating HIF-1α/β-catenin/VEGF axis in GC.

Abstract
We report the first observation of the parity-violating gamma-ray asymmetry A_{γ}^{np} in neutron-proton capture using polarized cold neutrons incident on a liquid parahydrogen target at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A_{γ}^{np} isolates the ΔI=1, ^{3}S_{1}→^{3}P_{1} component of the weak nucleon-nucleon interaction, which is dominated by pion exchange and can be directly related to a single coupling constant in either the DDH meson exchange model or pionless effective field theory. We measured A_{γ}^{np}=[-3.0±1.4(stat)±0.2(syst)]×10^{-8}, which implies a DDH weak πNN coupling of h_{π}^{1}=[2.6±1.2(stat)±0.2(syst)]×10^{-7} and a pionless EFT constant of C^{^{3}S_{1}→^{3}P_{1}}/C_{0}=[-7.4±3.5(stat)±0.5(syst)]×10^{-11} MeV^{-1}. We describe the experiment, data analysis, systematic uncertainties, and implications of the result.

Abstract
This paper presents a model to analyze the mechanism of the global contribution of energy usage by product exports. The theoretical analysis is based on the perspective that contribution estimates should be in relatively smaller sectors in which the production characteristics could be considered, such as the productivity distribution for each sector. Then, we constructed a method to measure the global contribution of energy usage. The simple method to estimate the global contribution is the percentage of goods export volume compared to the GDP as a multiple of total energy consumption, but this method underestimates the global contribution because it ignores the structure of energy consumption and product export in China. According to our measurement method and based on the theoretical analysis, we calculated the global contribution of energy consumption only by industrial manufactured product exports in a smaller sector per industry or manufacturing sector. The results indicated that approximately 42% of the total energy usage in the whole economy for China in 2013 was contributed to foreign regions. Along with the primary products and service export in China, the global contribution of energy consumption for China in 2013 by export was larger than 42% of the total energy usage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is increasing popularity of high-power lasers for surgical debridement and antimicrobial therapy in the management of peri-implantitis and periodontal therapy. Removal of the noxious foci would naturally promote tissue healing directly. However, there are also anecdotal reports of better healing around routine high-power laser procedures. The precise mechanisms mediating these effects remain to be fully elucidated. This work examines these low-dose laser bystander effects on oral human epithelial and fibroblasts, particularly focusing on the role of human β-defensin 2 (HBD-2 or DEFB4A), a potent factor capable of antimicrobial effects and promoting wound healing. MATERIAL AND METHODS Laser treatments were performed using a near-infrared laser (810 nm diode) at low doses. Normal human oral keratinocytes and fibroblast cells were used and HBD-2 mRNA and protein expression was assessed with real time polymerase chain reaction, western blotting and immunostaining. Role of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 signaling in this process was dissected using pathway-specific small molecule inhibitors. RESULTS We observed laser treatments robustly induced HBD-2 expression in an oral fibroblast cell line compared to a keratinocyte cell line. Low-dose laser treatments results in activation of the TGF-β1 pathway that mediated HBD-2 expression. The two arms of TGF-β1 signaling, Smad and non-Smad are involved in laser-mediated HBD-2 expression. CONCLUSIONS Laser-activated TGF-β1 signaling and induced expression of HBD-2, both of which are individually capable of promoting healing in tissues adjacent to high-power surgical laser applications. Moreover, the use of low-dose laser therapy itself can provide additional therapeutic benefits for effective clinical management of periodontal or peri-implant disease.

Abstract
To evaluate the clinical effect and safety of western medicine plus Traditional Chinese medicine for sepsis with gastrointestinal dysfunction. We searched CNKI (January 1979 to June 2014), VIP (January 1989 to June 2014), CBM (1978 to 2014), Wan Fang DATA (January 1990 to June 2014), PubMed (1978 to June 2014), The Cochrane Library (Issue 5, 2014), Embase (1974 to June 2014), and other relevant databases and journals to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on western medicine plus Traditional Chinese medicine versus western medicine only for sepsis with gastrointestinal dysfunction. The methodological quality was assessed and the data was extracted according to the Cochrane Reviewer's Handbook and related methods. Meta-analyses were performed by RevMan 5.1.0 software. Five eligible studies included 278 patients. The results of meta-analyses showed that western medicine plus Traditional Chinese medicine therapy can improve the APACHEII score, the peristaltic sound score and SIRS score, improve abdominal distension, decreased white blood cell count, reduce DAO in sepsis patients with gastrointestinal dysfunction. 3 studies reported adverse reactions, there was no significant difference between two groups. Western medicine plus Traditional Chinese medicine can improve gastrointestinal dysfunction in sepsis.

Abstract
Using a theoretical model, this paper argues that as firm productivity increases, there is a decrease in firm-level pollution intensity. However, as productivity increases, firms tend to increase their aggregate output, which requires the use of additional resources that increase pollution. Hence, an increase in productivity results in two opposing effects where increased productivity may in fact increase pollution created by a firm. We describe the joint effect of these two mechanisms on pollution emissions as the "productivity dilemma" of pollution emission. Based on firm-level data from China, we also empirically test this productivity dilemma hypothesis. Our empirical results suggest that, in general, firm productivity has a positive and statistically significant impact on pollution emission in China. However, the impact of productivity on pollution becomes negative when we control for increases in firm output. The empirical evidence also confirms the positive influence of productivity on output, which suggests that the main determinant of pollution is the firm's output. The empirical results provide evidence of the existence of, what we describe as, the productivity dilemma of pollution emission.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review the safety and efficacy of routine Western medicine (WM) plus Chinese drugs for no-flow or slow flow after coronary revascularization. METHODS CNKI, VIP, CBM, Wanfang Data, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, EMBase, and other relevant databases were electronically searched. Literatures were also manually retrieved from related journals. Randomized control trials of treating no-flow or slow flow patients after coronary revascularization by routine WM treatment plus Chinese drugs were retrieved. The quality of retrieved literature was assessed by methods from Cochrane Handbook. Valid data were extracted and analyzed by meta-analysis using RevMan5. 1.0 Software. Results Totally 5 trials including 526 patients with poor general quality were included. RESULTS of meta-analyses showed that compared with the routine WM treatment group, additional use of Chinese drugs could improve thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) [RR =0. 16, 95% Cl (0.07, 0.34), P < 0.01]; reduce elevated ST segment significantly [RR = 0.59, 95% CI (0.44, 0.79), P = 0. 00031]; in- crease regional myocardial blood flow (P < 0.01) and myocardial perfusion scores (P = 0.0109, P = 0.0115); and improve left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) under dobutamine stress state (P = 0.041). Only one trial covered a 6-month follow-up study. There was no statistical difference in the mortality, recurrent myocardial infarction, or revascularization between the two groups. There was no statistical difference in adverse event or safety indicators between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Compared with the WM treatment, complementary Chinese drugs could reduce occurrence of no-flow or slow flow after coronary revascularization, and further improve clinical efficacy. But larger and higher quality clinical trials are necessary for further evidence.

Abstract
Fusarium virguliforme is the cause of sudden death syndrome in soybean. Physiological variability among isolates of the fungus is unknown. One way to measure physiologic variability is to analyze growth on different carbon sources. The carbon source utilization profiles of 18 F. virguliforme isolates were examined using the Biolog FF 96-well microplate, which contains 95 different carbon sources. The utilization of dextrin,D-mannitol, maltotriose,D-lactic acid methyl ester, N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, salicin, D-trehalose, and L-alanine differed significantly among isolates (P = 0.05). Carbon sources were grouped into 3 clusters based on their ability to promote growth of F. virguliforme, after calculating Euclidean distances among them. About 12% of the carbon sources promoted a high amount of mycelial growth, 39% promoted a medium amount of growth, and 49% promoted a low amount of mycelial growth; the latter was not significantly different from the water blank control. A hierarchical tree diagram was produced for the 18 isolates based on their carbon source utilization profiles using Ward's hierarchical analysis method. Two main clusters of isolates were formed. One cluster represented greater average mycelial growth on all of the carbon sources than the other cluster. In this study, variability in carbon source utilization among F. virguliforme isolates was evident, but the results were not associated with geographic origin of the isolates, year collected, or published data on aggressiveness. Additional research is needed to determine if these carbon utilization profiles are associated with other biological characteristics, like spore germination, propagule formation, and saprophytic competitiveness.
