Observation of Seven Astrophysical Tau Neutrino Candidates with IceCube

We report on a measurement of astrophysical tau neutrinos with 9.7 yr of IceCube data. Using convolutional neural networks trained on images derived from simulated events, seven candidate ν_{τ} events were found with visible energies ranging from roughly 20 TeV to 1 PeV and a median expected parent ν_{τ} energy of about 200 TeV. Considering backgrounds from astrophysical and atmospheric neutrinos, and muons from π^{±}/K^{±} decays in atmospheric air showers, we obtain a total estimated background of about 0.5 events, dominated by non-ν_{τ} astrophysical neutrinos. Thus, we rule out the absence of astrophysical ν_{τ} at the 5σ level. The measured astrophysical ν_{τ} flux is consistent with expectations based on previously published IceCube astrophysical neutrino flux measurements and neutrino oscillations.

The role of snow in scavenging aerosol particles: A physical-chemical characterization

The below cloud scavenging of aerosols by snow has been analysed in León (NW Spain). Six snow events were registered over the course of one year of study. Ultrafine and accumulation aerosol particles were measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer spectrometer, while hydrometeors were characterized using a disdrometer. Furthermore, the chemical composition of the melted snow-water samples (soluble and insoluble fractions) was analysed. The scavenging coefficient (λ) showed a great variability among events. An effective washing of particles was observed during the first 30 min of snowfall. The mean change in the scavenging efficiency (%ΔC) of particle number concentration (PNC) and λ coefficient during this time interval were: i) nucleation mode: 36.3 % and 3.02 · 10-4 s-1; ii) Aitken mode: 30.4 % and 2.37 · 10-4 s-1 and iii) accumulation mode: 22.4 % and 1.77 · 10-4 s-1. The range of particle sizes that is less efficiently scavenged by snowfall was observed between 400 and 600 nm. When analyzing the whole snow event, an increase of PNC was observed. Two possible explanations underlie this behaviour: it could be caused by changes in air masses or by the resuspension of aerosol particles scavenged by snowflakes upon reaching the ground. A clear relationship was observed between Ca2+, SO42- and NO3- concentrations of aerosol particles before the snow event and the concentrations registered in the melted snow-water. The largest and smallest changes in aerosol number concentrations were caused by snowflakes of 3 and 6 mm in diameter, respectively. The particle size distributions (PSD) were fitted to log-normal distributions and the parameters were compared before and after snowfall.

Observation of high-energy neutrinos from the Galactic plane

The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, is unknown. Because of deflection by interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays produced within the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, cosmic rays interact with matter near their sources and during propagation, which produces high-energy neutrinos. We searched for neutrino emission using machine learning techniques applied to 10 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By comparing diffuse emission models to a background-only hypothesis, we identified neutrino emission from the Galactic plane at the 4.5σ level of significance. The signal is consistent with diffuse emission of neutrinos from the Milky Way but could also arise from a population of unresolved point sources.

Magnetic and elemental characterization of the particulate matter deposited on leaves of urban trees in Santiago, Chile

Airborne particulate matter is a serious threat to human health, especially in fast-growing cities. In this study, we carried out a magnetic and elemental study on tree leaves used as passive captors and urban dust from various sites in the city of Santiago, Chile, to assess the reliability of magnetic and elemental measurements to characterize particulate matter pollution from vehicular origin. We found that the magnetic susceptibility and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization measured on urban tree leaves is a good proxy for tracing anthropogenic metallic particles and allow controlling the exposure time for particulate matter collection, in agreement with other studies carried out in large cities. Similar measurements on urban soil can be influenced by particles of detritic (natural) origin, and therefore, magnetic measurements on tree leaves can help to identify hotspots where fine particles are more abundant. Elemental particle-induced X-ray emission analysis of tree leaves showed the presence of a number of elements associated with vehicular emissions, in particular Cu, Zn, Fe, K and S which are present at every site, and As, Se, V, Ni, Sr, Zr, Mo and Pb identified at some sites. We observed a correlation between magnetic parameters and the concentrations of S and Br as well as Cu to a smaller extent. Moreover, this study shows the importance of selecting carefully the tree species as well as the location of trees in order to optimize phytoremediation.

Evidence for neutrino emission from the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068

A supermassive black hole, obscured by cosmic dust, powers the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068. Neutrinos, which rarely interact with matter, could provide information on the galaxy’s active core. We searched for neutrino emission from astrophysical objects using data recorded with the IceCube neutrino detector between 2011 and 2020. The positions of 110 known gamma-ray sources were individually searched for neutrino detections above atmospheric and cosmic backgrounds. We found that NGC 1068 has an excess of 79 − 20 + 22 neutrinos at tera–electron volt energies, with a global significance of 4.2σ, which we interpret as associated with the active galaxy. The flux of high-energy neutrinos that we measured from NGC 1068 is more than an order of magnitude higher than the upper limit on emissions of tera–electron volt gamma rays from this source.

Search for Unstable Sterile Neutrinos with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

We present a search for an unstable sterile neutrino by looking for a resonant signal in eight years of atmospheric ν_{μ} data collected from 2011 to 2019 at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Both the (stable) three-neutrino and the 3+1 sterile neutrino models are disfavored relative to the unstable sterile neutrino model, though with p values of 2.8% and 0.81%, respectively, we do not observe evidence for 3+1 neutrinos with neutrino decay. The best-fit parameters for the sterile neutrino with decay model from this study are Δm_{41}^{2}=6.7_{-2.5}^{+3.9}  eV^{2}, sin^{2}2θ_{24}=0.33_{-0.17}^{+0.20}, and g^{2}=2.5π±1.5π, where g is the decay-mediating coupling. The preferred regions of the 3+1+decay model from short-baseline oscillation searches are excluded at 90% C.L.

Strong Constraints on Neutrino Nonstandard Interactions from TeV-Scale ν_{μ} Disappearance at IceCube

We report a search for nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI) using eight years of TeV-scale atmospheric muon neutrino data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By reconstructing incident energies and zenith angles for atmospheric neutrino events, this analysis presents unified confidence intervals for the NSI parameter ε_{μτ}. The best-fit value is consistent with no NSI at a p value of 25.2%. With a 90% confidence interval of -0.0041≤ε_{μτ}≤0.0031 along the real axis and similar strength in the complex plane, this result is the strongest constraint on any NSI parameter from any oscillation channel to date.

Size segregated ionic species collected in a harbour area

Water-soluble ions were analysed in size segregated aerosol samples collected in the port of Alicante (Southeastern Spain) during summer and winter using a multistage cascade impactor. Seasonal variations in the size distributions of the analysed components and the influence of bulk materials handling (loading/unloading and stockpiling) at the docks were investigated. The size distributions of SO₄^2-, NH₄⁺ and K⁺ were characterized by prominent peaks in the condensation and droplet modes, both in summer and winter, while those of Ca²⁺, Na⁺, Mg²⁺ and Cl^- had a main peak centred at ∼4 μm. Although oxalate size distributions were similar during both seasons, the fraction of coarse-mode oxalate increased in summer most likely as a result of volatilization and repartition processes or reactions of oxalic acid with coarse alkaline particles. Nitrate size distributions were dominated by a coarse mode; however, during winter, modal peaks in the submicron size range were also observed due to favourable conditions for the formation of fine-mode NH₄NO₃. Harbour activities had a significant impact only on the concentrations of calcium, particularly in the coarse fraction, during both summer and winter.

Search for Relativistic Magnetic Monopoles with Eight Years of IceCube Data

We present an all-sky 90% confidence level upper limit on the cosmic flux of relativistic magnetic monopoles using 2886 days of IceCube data. The analysis was optimized for monopole speeds between 0.750c and 0.995c, without any explicit restriction on the monopole mass. We constrain the flux of relativistic cosmic magnetic monopoles to a level below 2.0×10^{-19}  cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} over the majority of the targeted speed range. This result constitutes the most strict upper limit to date for magnetic monopoles with β≳0.8 and up to β∼0.995 and fills the gap between existing limits on the cosmic flux of nonrelativistic and ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles.

LABEC, the INFN ion beam laboratory of nuclear techniques for environment and cultural heritage

The LABEC laboratory, the INFN ion beam laboratory of nuclear techniques for environment and cultural heritage, located in the Scientific and Technological Campus of the University of Florence in Sesto Fiorentino, started its operational activities in 2004, after INFN decided in 2001 to provide our applied nuclear physics group with a large laboratory dedicated to applications of accelerator-related analytical techniques, based on a new 3 MV Tandetron accelerator. The new accelerator greatly improved the performance of existing Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) applications (for which we were using since the 1980s an old single-ended Van de Graaff accelerator) and in addition allowed to start a novel activity of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), in particular for ¹⁴C dating. Switching between IBA and AMS operation became very easy and fast, which allowed us high flexibility in programming the activities, mainly focused on studies of cultural heritage and atmospheric aerosol composition, but including also applications to biology, geology, material science and forensics, ion implantation, tests of radiation damage to components, detector performance tests and low-energy nuclear physics. This paper describes the facilities presently available in the LABEC laboratory, their technical features and some success stories of recent applications.

Comparison of five methodologies to apportion organic aerosol sources during a PM pollution event

This study presents a comparison of five methodologies to apportion primary (POA) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) sources from measurements performed in the Paris region (France) during a highly processed PM pollution event. POA fractions, estimated from EC-tracer method and positive matrix factorization (PMF) analyses, conducted on measurements from PM₁₀ filters, aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM) and offline aerosol mass spectrometry (AMS), were all comparable (2.2-3.7 μg m^-3 as primary organic carbon (POC)). Associated relative uncertainties (measurement + model) on POC estimations ranged from 8 to 50%. The best apportionment of primary traffic OA was achieved using key markers (EC and 1-nitropyrene) in the chemical speciation-based PMF showing more pronounced rush-hour peaks and greater correlation with NO_x than other traffic related POC factors. All biomass burning-related factors were in good agreement, with a typical diel profile and a night-time increase linked to residential heating. If PMF applied to ACSM data showed good agreement with other PMF outputs corrected from dust-related factors (coarse PM), discrepancies were observed between individual POA factors (traffic, biomass burning) and directly comparable SOA factors and highly oxidized OA. Similar secondary organic carbon (SOC) concentrations (3.3 ± 0.1 μg m^-3) were obtained from all approaches, except the SOA-tracer method (1.8 μg m^-3). Associated uncertainties ranged from 14 to 52% with larger uncertainties obtained for PMF-chemical data, EC- and SOA-tracer methods. This latter significantly underestimated total SOA loadings, even including biomass burning SOA, due to missing SOA classes and precursors. None of the approaches was able to identify the formation mechanisms and/or precursors responsible for the highly oxidized SOA fraction associated with nitrate- and/or sulfate-rich aerosols (35% of OA). We recommend the use of a combination of different methodologies to apportion the POC/SOC concentrations/contributions to get the highest level of confidence in the estimates obtained.

Quantitative assessment of the variability in chemical profiles from source apportionment analysis of PM10 and PM2.5 at different sites within a large metropolitan area

The study aims to assess the differences between the chemical profiles of the major anthropogenic and natural PM sources in two areas with different levels of urbanization and traffic density within the same urban agglomeration. A traffic site and an urban background site in the Athens Metropolitan Area have been selected for this comparison. For both sites, eight sources were identified, with seven of them being common for the two sites (Mineral Dust, non-Exhaust Emissions, Exhaust Emissions, Heavy Oil Combustion, Sulfates & Organics, Sea Salt and Biomass Burning) and one, site-specific (Nitrates for the traffic site and Aged Sea Salt for the urban background site). The similarity between the source profiles was quantified using two statistical analysis tools, Pearson correlation (PC) and Standardized Identity Distance (SID). According to Pearson coefficients five out of the eight source profiles present high (PC > 0.8) correlation (Mineral Dust, Biomass Burning, Sea Salt, Sulfates and Heavy Oil Combustion), one presented moderate (0.8 > PC > 0.6) correlation (Exhaust) and two low/no (PC < 0.6) correlation (non-Exhaust, Nitrates/Aged Sea Salt). The source profiles that appear to be more correlated are those of sources that are not expected to have high spatial variability because there are either natural/secondary and thus have a regional character or are emitted outside the urban agglomeration and are transported to both sites. According to SID four out of the eight sources have high statistical correlation (SID < 1) in the two sites (Mineral Dust, Sea salt, Sulfates, Heavy Oil Combustion). Biomass Burning was found to be the source that yielded different results from the two methodologies. The careful examination of the source profile of that source revealed the reason for this discrepancy. SID takes all the species of the profile equally into account, while PC might be disproportionally affected by a few numbers of species with very high concentrations. It is suggested, based on the findings of this work, that the combined use of both tools can lead the users to a thorough evaluation of the similarity of source profiles. This work is, to the best of our knowledge, the first time a study is focused on the quantitative comparison of the source profiles for sites inside the same urban agglomeration using statistical indicators.

eV-Scale Sterile Neutrino Search Using Eight Years of Atmospheric Muon Neutrino Data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

The results of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using eight years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory are presented. A total of 305 735 muon neutrino events are analyzed in reconstructed energy-zenith space to test for signatures of a matter-enhanced oscillation that would occur given a sterile neutrino state with a mass-squared differences between 0.01 and 100  eV^{2}. The best-fit point is found to be at sin^{2}(2θ_{24})=0.10 and Δm_{41}^{2}=4.5  eV^{2}, which is consistent with the no sterile neutrino hypothesis with a p value of 8.0%.

Characteristics of the Diffuse Astrophysical Electron and Tau Neutrino Flux with Six Years of IceCube High Energy Cascade Data

We report on the first measurement of the astrophysical neutrino flux using particle showers (cascades) in IceCube data from 2010-2015. Assuming standard oscillations, the astrophysical neutrinos in this dedicated cascade sample are dominated (∼90%) by electron and tau flavors. The flux, observed in the sensitive energy range from 16 TeV to 2.6 PeV, is consistent with a single power-law model as expected from Fermi-type acceleration of high energy particles at astrophysical sources. We find the flux spectral index to be γ=2.53±0.07 and a flux normalization for each neutrino flavor of ϕ_{astro}=1.66_{-0.27}^{+0.25} at E_{0}=100  TeV, in agreement with IceCube's complementary muon neutrino results and with all-neutrino flavor fit results. In the measured energy range we reject spectral indices γ≤2.28 at ≥3σ significance level. Because of high neutrino energy resolution and low atmospheric neutrino backgrounds, this analysis provides the most detailed characterization of the neutrino flux at energies below ∼100  TeV compared to previous IceCube results. Results from fits assuming more complex neutrino flux models suggest a flux softening at high energies and a flux hardening at low energies (p value ≥0.06). The sizable and smooth flux measured below ∼100  TeV remains a puzzle. In order to not violate the isotropic diffuse gamma-ray background as measured by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, it suggests the existence of astrophysical neutrino sources characterized by dense environments which are opaque to gamma rays.

Chemical composition of rainwater under two events of aerosol transport: A Saharan dust outbreak and wildfires

A one-year campaign of joint sampling of aerosols and precipitation, carried out in León, Spain, allowed to study the impact of two special events that affected the air quality in the north of the country, on rainfall in the city: a period with wildfires and a Saharan dust intrusion. The wildfires that occurred in northern Portugal and northwestern Spain in August 2016 affected the chemistry of rainfall on 15 August 2016, causing an increase in concentrations of NH₄⁺, Na⁺, Cl^-, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, SO₄^2- and NO₃^- and in the concentrations of organic acids, which was reflected in the levels of soluble and insoluble organic carbon. This led to acidification of rainwater (pH = 4.8). The second precipitation event was registered between 11 and 14 February 2017, during which the rainwater was collected in four daily fractions (P₁, P₂, P₃ and P₄). The rain sample of 12 February (P₂) coincided with a Saharan dust intrusion that reached northern Iberia that day. The chemical composition of P₂ showed an increase in the Ca²⁺ (>800%), Mg²⁺ (71%), Cl^- (62%), and SO₄^2- (33%) concentrations, with respect to P₁. The input of crustal elements to the atmosphere helped to neutralize the P₂ rainwater, causing pH values higher than 6.5. Once the dust intrusion left the north of the Peninsula, the composition of rainwater P₃ and P₄ revealed a mixture of marine contribution with local anthropogenic emissions, as well as a decrease in ion concentrations and conductivity, and an increase in pH values.

Airborne bacteria structure and chemical composition relationships in winter and spring PM10 samples over southeastern Italy

The Redundancy Discrimination Analysis (RDA) and Spearman correlation coefficients were used to investigate relationships between airborne bacteria at the phylum and genus level and chemical species in winter and spring PM10 samples over Southeastern Italy. The identification of main chemical species/pollution sources that were related to and likely affected the bacterial community structure was the main goal of this work. The 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding approach was used to characterize airborne bacteria. Seventeen phyla and seventy-nine genera contributing each by mean within-sample relative abundance percentage > 0.01% were identified in PM10 samples, which were chemically characterized for 33 species, including ions, metals, OC, and EC (organic and elemental carbon, respectively). Chemical species were associated with six different pollution sources. A shift from winter to spring in both bacterial community structure and chemical species mass concentrations/sources and the relationships between them was observed. RDA triplots pointed out significant correlations for all tested bacterial phyla (genera) with other phyla (genera) and/or with chemical species, in contrast to correlation coefficient results, which showed that few phyla (genera) were significantly correlated with chemical species. More specifically, in winter Bacillus and Chryseobacterium were the only genera significantly correlated with chemical species likely associated with particles from soil-dust and anthropogenic pollution source, respectively. In spring, Enterobacter and Sphingomonas were the only genera significantly correlated with chemical species likely associated with particles from the anthropogenic pollution and the marine and soil-dust sources, respectively. The results of this study also showed that the correlation coefficients were the best tool to obtain unequivocal identifications of the correlations of phyla (genera) with chemical species. The seasonal changes of the PM10 chemical composition, the microbial community structure, and their relationships suggested that the seasonal changes of atmospheric particles may have likely contributed to seasonal changes of bacterial community in the atmosphere.

Time-Integrated Neutrino Source Searches with 10 Years of IceCube Data

This Letter presents the results from pointlike neutrino source searches using ten years of IceCube data collected between April 6, 2008 and July 10, 2018. We evaluate the significance of an astrophysical signal from a pointlike source looking for an excess of clustered neutrino events with energies typically above ∼1  TeV among the background of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We perform a full-sky scan, a search within a selected source catalog, a catalog population study, and three stacked Galactic catalog searches. The most significant point in the northern hemisphere from scanning the sky is coincident with the Seyfert II galaxy NGC 1068, which was included in the source catalog search. The excess at the coordinates of NGC 1068 is inconsistent with background expectations at the level of 2.9σ after accounting for statistical trials from the entire catalog. The combination of this result along with excesses observed at the coordinates of three other sources, including TXS 0506+056, suggests that, collectively, correlations with sources in the northern catalog are inconsistent with background at 3.3σ significance. The southern catalog is consistent with background. These results, all based on searches for a cumulative neutrino signal integrated over the 10 years of available data, motivate further study of these and similar sources, including time-dependent analyses, multimessenger correlations, and the possibility of stronger evidence with coming upgrades to the detector.

Unusual winter Saharan dust intrusions at Northwest Spain: Air quality, radiative and health impacts

Saharan air masses can transport high amounts of mineral dust particles and biological material to the Iberian Peninsula. During winter, this kind of events is not very frequent and usually does not reach the northwest of the Peninsula. However, between 21 and 22 February 2016 and between 22 and 23 February 2017, two exceptional events were registered in León (Spain), which severely affected air quality. An integrative approach including: i) typical synoptic conditions; ii) aerosol chemical composition; iii) particle size distributions; iv) pollen concentration; v) aerosol optical depth (AOD); vi) radiative forcing and vii) estimation of the impact of aerosols in the respiratory tract, was carried out. In the global characterization of these events, the exceedance of the PM₁₀ daily limit value, an increase in the coarse mode and a rise in the iron concentration were observed. On the 2016 event, an AOD and extinction-related Ångström exponent clearly characteristic of desert aerosol (1.1 and 0.05, respectively) were registered. Furthermore, pollen grains not typical of flowering plants in this period were identified. The chemical analysis of the aerosol from the 2017 event allowed us to confirm the presence of the main elements associated with mineral sources (aluminum, calcium, and silica concentrations). An increase in the SO₄^2-, NO₃^- and Cl^- concentrations during the Saharan dust intrusion was also noted. However, in this event, there was no presence of atypical pollen types. The estimated dust radiative forcing traduced a cooling effect for surface and atmosphere during both events, corroborated by trends of radiative flux measurements. The estimated impact on the respiratory tract regions of the high levels of particulate matter during both Saharan dust intrusions showed high levels for the respirable fraction.

Combined use of daily and hourly data sets for the source apportionment of particulate matter near a waste incinerator plant

A particulate matter (PM) source apportionment study was carried out in one of the most polluted districts of Tuscany (Italy), close to an old waste incinerator plant. Due to the high PM10 levels, an extensive field campaign was supported by the Regional Government to identify the main PM sources and quantify their contributions. PM10 daily samples were collected for one year and analysed by different techniques to obtain a complete chemical characterisation (elements, ions and carbon fractions). Hourly fine (<2.5 μm) and coarse (2.5-10 μm) aerosol samples were collected by a Streaker sampler for a shorter period and hourly elemental concentrations were obtained by PIXE. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) analysis of daily and hourly data allowed the identification of 10 main sources: six anthropogenic (Biomass Burning, Traffic, Secondary Nitrates, Secondary Sulphates, Incinerator, Heavy Oil combustion), two natural (Saharan Dust and Fresh Sea Salt) and two mixed sources (Local Dust and Aged Sea Salt). Biomass burning turned out to be the main source of PM, accounting for 30% of the PM10 mass as annual average, followed by Traffic (18%) and Secondary Nitrates (14%). Emissions from the Incinerator turned out to be only 2% of PM10 mass on average. PM10 composition and source apportionment have been assessed in a polluted area near a waste incinerator, by PMF analysis on daily and hourly compositional data sets.

Speciation of organic fractions does matter for aerosol source apportionment. Part 2: Intensive short-term campaign in the Paris area (France)

The present study aimed at performing PM₁₀ source apportionment, using positive matrix factorization (PMF), based on filter samples collected every 4h at a sub-urban station in the Paris region (France) during a PM pollution event in March 2015 (PM₁₀>50μgm^-3 for several consecutive days). The PMF model allowed to deconvolve 11 source factors. The use of specific primary and secondary organic molecular markers favoured the determination of common sources such as biomass burning and primary traffic emissions, as well as 2 specific biogenic SOA (marine+isoprene) and 3 anthropogenic SOA (nitro-PAHs+oxy-PAHs+phenolic compounds oxidation) factors. This study is probably the first one to report the use of methylnitrocatechol isomers as well as 1-nitropyrene to apportion secondary OA linked to biomass burning emissions and primary traffic emissions, respectively. Secondary organic carbon (SOC) fractions were found to account for 47% of the total OC. The use of organic molecular markers allowed the identification of 41% of the total SOC composed of anthropogenic SOA (namely, oxy-PAHs, nitro-PAHs and phenolic compounds oxidation, representing 15%, 9%, 11% of the total OC, respectively) and biogenic SOA (marine+isoprene) (6% in total). Results obtained also showed that 35% of the total SOC originated from anthropogenic sources and especially PAH SOA (oxy-PAHs+nitro-PAHs), accounting for 24% of the total SOC, highlighting its significant contribution in urban influenced environments. Anthropogenic SOA related to nitro-PAHs and phenolic compounds exhibited a clear diurnal pattern with high concentrations during the night indicating the prominent role of night-time chemistry but with different chemical processes involved.

Implementing constrained multi-time approach with bootstrap analysis in ME-2: An application to PM2.5 data from Florence (Italy)

Advanced receptor models have been recently developed and tested in order to improve the resolution of apportionment problems reducing rotational ambiguity of results and aiming at identifying a larger number of sources. In particular, multi-time model is a factor analysis method able to compute source profiles and contributions using aerosol compositional data with different time resolutions. Unlike traditional factor analysis, each measured value can be inserted into multi-time model with its original time schedule, thus all temporal information can be effectively used in the modelling process. In this work, multi-time model was expanded in order to impose constraints on modelled factors aiming at improving the source identification. Moreover, as far as we know for the first time, a suitable bootstrap technique was implemented in the multi-time scheme to estimate the uncertainty of the final constrained solutions. These implemented approaches were tested on a PM2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm) dataset composed of 24-h samples collected during one year and hourly data sampled in parallel for two shorter periods in Florence (Italy). The daily samples were chemically characterised for elements, ions and carbonaceous components while elemental concentrations only were available for high-time resolved samples. The application of the advanced model revealed the major contribution from traffic (accounting for 37% of PM2.5 as annual average) and allowed an accurate characterisation of involved emission processes. In particular, exhaust and non-exhaust emissions were identified. The constraints imposed in the continuation run led to a better description of the factor associated to nitrates and also of biomass burning profile and the bootstrap results gave useful information to assess the reliability of source apportionment solutions. Finally, the comparison with the results computed by ME-2 base model applied to daily and hourly compositional data separately demonstrated the advantages provided by the multi-time approach.

Temporal variations of PM1 major components in an urban street canyon

Seasonal changes in the levels of PM1 and its main components (organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), SO4 (2-), NO3 (-) and NH4 (+)) were studied in an urban street canyon in southeastern Spain. Although PM1 levels did not show an evident seasonal cycle, strong variations in the concentrations of its major components were observed. Ammonium sulfate, the main secondary inorganic compound, was found to be of regional origin. Its formation was favored during summer due to increased photochemical activity. In contrast, the concentrations of particulate ammonium nitrate, which is thermally unstable, were highest in winter. Although traffic emissions are the dominant source of EC in the city, variations in traffic intensity could not explain the seasonal cycle of this component. The higher EC concentrations during the cold months were attributed to the lower dispersion conditions and the increase in EC emissions. Special attention has been given to variations in organic carbon levels since it accounted for about one third of the total PM1 mass. The concentrations of both total OC and secondary OC (SOC) were maxima in winter. The observed seasonal variation in SOC levels is similar to that found in other southern European cities where the frequency of sunny days in winter is high enough to promote photochemical processes.

Biomass burning contributions estimated by synergistic coupling of daily and hourly aerosol composition records

Biomass burning (BB) is a significant source of particulate matter (PM) in many parts of the world. Whereas numerous studies demonstrate the relevance of BB emissions in central and northern Europe, the quantification of this source has been assessed only in few cities in southern European countries. In this work, the application of Positive Matrix Factorisation (PMF) allowed a clear identification and quantification of an unexpected very high biomass burning contribution in Tuscany (central Italy), in the most polluted site of the PATOS project. In this urban background site, BB accounted for 37% of the mass of PM10 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter<10 μm) as annual average, and more than 50% during winter, being the main cause of all the PM10 limit exceedances. Due to the chemical complexity of BB emissions, an accurate assessment of this source contribution is not always easily achievable using just a single tracer. The present work takes advantage of the combination of a long-term daily data-set, characterized by an extended chemical speciation, with a short-term high time resolution (1-hour) and size-segregated data-set, obtained by PIXE analyses of streaker samples. The hourly time pattern of the BB source, characterised by a periodic behaviour with peaks starting at about 6 p.m. and lasting all the evening-night, and its strong seasonality, with higher values in the winter period, clearly confirmed the hypothesis of a domestic heating source (also excluding important contributions from wildfires and agricultural wastes burning).

Comparative performance assessment of point-of-care testing devices for measuring glucose and ketones at the patient bedside

Point-of-care (POC) testing devices for monitoring glucose and ketones can play a key role in the management of dysglycemia in hospitalized diabetes patients. The accuracy of glucose devices can be influenced by biochemical changes that commonly occur in critically ill hospital patients and by the medication prescribed. Little is known about the influence of these factors on ketone POC measurements. The aim of this study was to assess the analytical performance of POC hospital whole-blood glucose and ketone meters and the extent of glucose interference factors on the design and accuracy of ketone results. StatStrip glucose/ketone, Optium FreeStyle glucose/ketone, and Accu-Chek Performa glucose were also assessed and results compared to a central laboratory reference method. The analytical evaluation was performed according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) protocols for precision, linearity, method comparison, and interference. The interferences assessed included acetoacetate, acetaminophen, ascorbic acid, galactose, maltose, uric acid, and sodium. The accuracies of both Optium ketone and glucose measurements were significantly influenced by varying levels of hematocrit and ascorbic acid. StatStrip ketone and glucose measurements were unaffected by the interferences tested with exception of ascorbic acid, which reduced the higher level ketone value. The accuracy of Accu-Chek glucose measurements was affected by hematocrit, by ascorbic acid, and significantly by galactose. The method correlation assessment indicated differences between the meters in compliance to ISO 15197 and CLSI 12-A3 performance criteria. Combined POC glucose/ketone methods are now available. The use of these devices in a hospital setting requires careful consideration with regard to the selection of instruments not sensitive to hematocrit variation and presence of interfering substances.

Receptor modelling of airborne particulate matter in the vicinity of a major steelworks site

In this study, the Multilinear Engine (ME-2) receptor model was applied to speciated particulate matter concentration data collected with two different measuring instruments upwind and downwind of a steelworks complex in Port Talbot, South Wales, United Kingdom. Hourly and daily PM samples were collected with Streaker and Partisol samplers, respectively, during a one month sampling campaign between April 18 and May 16, 2012. Daily samples (PM10, PM2.5, PM2.5-10) were analysed for trace metals and water-soluble ions using standard procedures. Hourly samples (PM2.5 and PM2.5-10) were assayed for 22 elements by Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE). PM10 data analysis using ME-2 resolved 6 factors from both datasets identifying different steel processing units including emissions from the blast furnaces (BF), the basic oxygen furnace steelmaking plant (BOS), the coke-making plant, and the sinter plant. Steelworks emissions were the main contributors to PM10 accounting for 45% of the mass when including also secondary aerosol. The blast furnaces were the largest emitter of primary PM10 in the study area, explaining about one-fifth of the mass. Other source contributions to PM10 were from marine aerosol (28%), traffic (16%), and background aerosol (11%). ME-2 analysis was also performed on daily PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 data resolving 7 and 6 factors, respectively. The largest contributions to PM2.5-10 were from marine aerosol (30%) and blast furnace emissions (28%). Secondary components explained one-half of PM2.5 mass. The influence of steelworks sources on ambient particulate matter at Port Talbot was distinguishable for several separate processing sections within the steelworks in all PM fractions.

Minimizing the impact of time lag variability on accuracy evaluation of continuous glucose monitoring systems

BACKGROUND

Despite all commercially available continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems being designed to operate in the extracellular interstitial fluid, and even though there is a well-recognized time lag between the interstitial and the venous compartments, the accuracy of the CGM device readings is still evaluated against the glucose concentration in venous blood (VB) samples, thus resulting in a perceived decrease in accuracy. This article explains how different time lag compensation methods (no compensation, compensation with a fixed delay, compensation with a variable delay based on an intercompartmental diffusional model) have an impact on how CGM accuracy is evaluated.

METHODS

The data set used consisted of 210 CGM/blood glucose data pairs from 18 diabetes subjects (15 type 1 and 3 type 2) selected from a data base collected during two independent clinical trials. All CGM measurements were performed using the GlucoMen ®Day CGM system (A. Menarini Diagnostics, Italy), and the reference VB glucose measurements by means of a standard laboratory instrument. For each applied time lag compensation method, the CGM accuracy evaluation was performed as recommended by the POCT05-A consensus guideline.

RESULTS

The perceived accuracy of the CGM device significantly improved when applying both the fixed or the variable delay compensation method. However, it is worth noting how the variable delay method, which relies on a closer description of the intercompartmental diffusion processes, provided the best perception of the clinical accuracy of the device.

CONCLUSIONS

When assessing the accuracy of a CGM system, a crucial step in data analysis is to account for time lag, which enables minimization of the apparent decline in system accuracy.

GlucoMen Day continuous glucose monitoring system: a screening for enzymatic and electrochemical interferents

BACKGROUND

While most of the common drugs with the potential to interfere with continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems are accessible over the counter and can be assumed by CGM patients without medical supervision, many other chemicals are frequently used to treat critically ill patients. Continuous glucose monitoring reading accuracy may also be compromised in patients characterized by abnormally high concentrations of physiological interferents. In this article, 22 species selected from endogenous and exogenous chemicals were screened as possible interferents of GlucoMen®Day (GMD), the new microdialysis-based CGM system from A. Menarini Diagnostics.

METHOD

Interference testing was performed according to the EP7-A2 guideline (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute 2005). Interference was evaluated at two levels of glucose, with each interferent additionally tested at two concentrations. Furthermore, two configurations of the GMD disposable sensor kit--one designed for subcutaneous application, the other for direct intravascular CGM--were challenged with interferent-spiked serum and blood samples, respectively.

RESULTS

With the exception of dopamine (however, at very high, nonphysiological concentrations), no interference was observed for all the tested substances. Interestingly, none of the common electrochemical interferents (including ascorbic acid, acetaminophen, and salicylic acid, which represent the major specificity issue for the competing CGM systems) significantly affected the system's output.

CONCLUSIONS

These results provide clear insights into the advantages offered by the use of a microdialysis-based CGM system that additionally relies on the detection of hydrogen peroxide at low operating potential. GlucoMen Day may become the CGM system of choice for those patients who require either regular administration of drugs or their glycemia to be tightly controlled in the intensive care unit or similar environments.

Gamma-ray localization of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes

Terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) are very short bursts of high-energy photons and electrons originating in Earth's atmosphere. We present here a localization study of TGFs carried out at gamma-ray energies above 20 MeV based on an innovative event selection method. We use the AGILE satellite Silicon Tracker data that for the first time have been correlated with TGFs detected by the AGILE Mini-Calorimeter. We detect 8 TGFs with gamma-ray photons of energies above 20 MeV localized by the AGILE gamma-ray imager with an accuracy of ∼5-10° at 50 MeV. Remarkably, all TGF-associated gamma rays are compatible with a terrestrial production site closer to the subsatellite point than 400 km. Considering that our gamma rays reach the AGILE satellite at 540 km altitude with limited scattering or attenuation, our measurements provide the first precise direct localization of TGFs from space.

A comprehensive assessment of PM emissions from paved roads: real-world Emission Factors and intense street cleaning trials

Compliance with air quality standards requires control of source emissions: fine exhaust particles are already subject to regulation but vehicle fleets increase whilst the non-exhaust emissions are totally uncontrolled. Emission inventories are scarce despite their suitability for researchers and regulating agencies for managing air quality and PM reduction measures. Only few countries in Europe proposed street cleaning as a possible control measure, but its effectiveness is still far to be determined. This study offers first estimates of Real-world Emission Factors for PM(10) and brake-wear elements and the effect on PM(10) concentrations induced by intense street cleaning trials. A straightforward campaign was carried out in the city of Barcelona with hourly elemental composition of fine and coarse PM to detect any short-term effect of street cleaning on specific tracers of non-exhaust emissions. Samples were analyzed by Particle Induced X-Ray Emission. Real-world Emission Factor for PM(10) averaged for the local fleet resulted to be 97 mg veh(-1) km(-1). When compared to other European studies, our EF resulted higher than what found in UK, Germany, Switzerland and Austria but lower than Scandinavian countries. For brake-related elements, total EFs were estimated, accounting for the sum of direct and resuspension emissions, in 7400, 486, 106 and 86 microg veh(-1) km(-1), respectively for Fe, Cu, Sn and Sb. In PM(2.5)Fe and Cu emission factors were respectively 4884 and 306 microg veh(-1) km(-1). Intense street cleaning trials evidenced a PM(10) reduction at kerbside of 3 microg m(-3) (mean daily levels of 54 microg m(-3)), with respect to reference stations. It is important to remark that such benefit could only be detected in small time-integration periods (12:00-18:00) since in daily values this benefit was not noticed. Hourly PM elemental monitoring allowed the identification of mineral and brake-related metallic particles as those responsible of the PM(10) reduction.

Evaluating the clinical accuracy of GlucoMen®Day: a novel microdialysis-based continuous glucose monitor

BACKGROUND

The objective of this work was to determine the clinical accuracy of GlucoMen®Day, a new microdialysis-based continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) from A. Menarini Diagnostics (Florence, Italy). Accuracy evaluation was performed using continuous glucose-error grid analysis (CG-EGA), as recommended by the Performance Metrics for Continuous Interstitial Glucose Monitoring; Approved Guideline (POCT05-A).

METHODS

Two independent clinical trials were carried out on patients with types 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus, the glycemic levels of whom were monitored in an in-home setting for 100-hour periods. A new multiparametric algorithm was developed and used to compensate in real-time the GlucoMen®Day signal. The time lag between continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and reference data was first estimated using the Poincaré plot method. The entire set of CGM/reference data pairs was then evaluated following the CG-EGA criteria, which allowed an estimation of the combined point and rate accuracy stratified by glycemic ranges.

RESULTS

With an estimated time lag of 11 minutes, the linear regression analysis of the CGM/reference glucose values yielded r = 0.92. The mean absolute error (MAE) was 11.4 mg/dl. The calculated mean absolute rate deviation (MARD) was 0.63 mg/dl/min. The data points falling within the A+B zones of CG-EGA were 100% in hypoglycemia, 95.7% in euglycemia, and 95.2% in hyperglycemia.

CONCLUSIONS

The GlucoMen®Day system provided reliable, real-time measurement of subcutaneous glucose levels in patients with diabetes for up to 100 hours. The device showed the ability to follow rapid glycemic excursions and detect severe hypoglycemic events accurately. Its accuracy parameters fitted the criteria of the state-of-the-art consensus guideline for CGMS, with highly consistent results from two independent studies.

An integrated approach to assess air pollution threats to cultural heritage in a semi-confined environment: the case study of Michelozzo's Courtyard in Florence (Italy)

An example of an integrated approach to assess air pollution threats to cultural heritage in a semi-confined environment is presented in this work, where the monitoring campaign carried out at the Michelozzo's Courtyard (in Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, Italy) is used as a case study. A wide research project was carried out, with the main aim of obtaining the first quantitative data on air quality and microclimate conditions inside the Courtyard, and, if possible, identifying the main causes of degradation and suggesting appropriate conservation strategies. The investigation adopted a holistic approach involving thermographic measurements on the wall paintings, microclimatic analysis, gaseous pollutant monitoring, atmospheric particles characterisation and dry deposition compositional analysis. Attention was focused on the wall painting depicting the city of Hall because of its anomalous and critical conservation conditions, which are visible at a glance, due to the contrast between a wide darker zone around the central subject of the painting and external lighter areas.

Split hybridisation probes for electrochemical typing of single-nucleotide polymorphisms

This paper describes the development of a highly selective single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) typing method based on the use of split hybridisation probes and demonstrates the concept through the electrochemical analysis of single-base mutations in actual patient samples. The requirement that two probes hybridised adjacent to one another to allow for stabilisation (via base-stacking) and binding of the allele-specific oligonucleotide (ASO), imparted highly stringent selectivity criteria to the assay. Simple rules for tuning the characteristics of such stacking/ASO probe pairs and achieve full mismatch discrimination at ambient conditions (with no need to strictly control the temperature) are provided. All genotyping experiments were indeed performed at room temperature, using the planar surface of disposable probe-modified gold electrodes as the genosensing platform. The ability to detect nanomolar amounts of a synthetic target even within a vast excess of single-base substituted sequences gave strong evidence of the specificity of the split probes assay. Proving the general validity of this genotyping approach, application of the analytical pathway was further demonstrated for clinical targets (amplified from the human TP53 gene) whose mutational site was poorly accessible, being part of a thermodynamically stable hairpin. In combination with use of auxiliary oligonucleotides (which restored the availability of each pre-defined hybridisation site), the assay demonstrated the ability to fully discriminate single-base mutations with detection limits in the high picomolar range (total analysis time: 60 min). Our specific probe design, hybridisation and signal transduction paths make the analytical process remarkably simple, relatively low cost and, thus, well suited for low throughput analysis of clinically relevant samples.

Characterization of particulate matter sources in an urban environment

Daily time series measurements of elements or compounds are widely used to apportion the contribution of specific sources of particulate matter concentration in the atmosphere. We present results obtained for the urban area of Genoa (Italy) based on several hundred of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 daily samples collected in sites with different geo-morphological and urbanization characteristics. Elemental concentrations of Na to Pb were obtained through Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF), and the contributions of specific sources of particulate matter (PM) concentration were apportioned through Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). By sampling at different sites we were able to obtain, in each PM fraction, the average and stable values for the tracers of specific sources, in particular traffic (Cu, Zn, Pb) and heavy oil combustion (V, Ni). We could also identify and quote the contamination of anthropogenic PM in "natural" sources (sea, soil dust). Sampling at several sites in the same urban area allowed us to resolve local characteristics as well as to quote average values.

Disposable electrochemical DNA-array for PCR amplified detection of hazelnut allergens in foodstuffs

An electrochemical low-density DNA-array has been designed and implemented to be used in combination with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in order to investigate the presence of hazelnut major allergens (Cor a 1.04, Cor a 1.03) in foodstuff. Unmodified PCR products were captured at the sensor interface via sandwich hybridization with surface-tethered probes and biotinylated signalling probes. The resulting biotinylated hybrids were coupled with a streptavidin-alkaline phosphatase conjugate and then exposed to a alpha-naphthyl phosphate solution. Differential pulse voltammetry was finally used to detect the alpha-naphthol signal. The detection limits for Cor a 1.03 and Cor a 1.04 were 0.3 and 0.1 nmol L(-1), respectively (R.S.D. 10%). The optimized conditions were used to test several commercially available foodstuffs, claiming to contain or not the targeted nuts. The results were compared with those obtained with classical ELISA tests.

Steric factors controlling the surface hybridization of PCR amplified sequences

This study elucidated the hybridization behavior of surface-bound oligonucleotides to their longer PCR-amplified targets. The screen-printed gold surface of disposable electrodes was the platform onto which thiol-tethered oligonucleotides (21-mer) were immobilized by chemisorption. As a model case, approximately 600-bp amplicons were studied. Surface hybridization was monitored by means of an enzyme-linked assay with electrochemical detection. Use of different surface-tethered probe sequences over a wide range of surface densities was explored to achieve the highest duplex yield. Both the surface coverage by the probe and its relative position on the target strand were found to control the efficiency of capture of the target sequence. Interfacial hybridization occurred with the highest efficiency for a probe coverage of approximately 2.9 x 10(12) molecules/cm2 and when the 3' end of the amplicon was involved. An unusual (bell-shaped) response/amplicon concentration profile was additionally found. It was hypothesised that when the amount of solution-phase target is relatively high, random collisions make reannealing of the approximately 600-bp strands favored over formation of the surface-tethered probe-amplicon complex. This paper also describes a strategy to enhance the sensitivity of enzyme-linked hybridization assays. Such a strategy relies on formation, around the long target sequence, of dendritic-like structures, which could offer multiple anchoring points for the enzyme conjugate. The results shown in this work might have great significance for the practical application of hybridization to oligonucleotide chips.

Disposable electrochemical genosensor for the simultaneous analysis of different bacterial food contaminants

This paper deals with the use of an electrochemical genosensor array for the rapid and simultaneous detection of different food-contaminating pathogenic bacteria. The method includes PCR amplification followed by analysis of the amplicons by hybridisation with toxin-specific oligonucleotide probes. A screen-printed array of four gold electrodes, modified using thiol-tethered oligonucleotide probes, was used. Unmodified PCR products were captured at the sensor interface via sandwich hybridisation with surface-tethered probes and biotinylated signaling probes. The resulting biotinylated hybrids were coupled with a streptavidin-alkaline phosphatase conjugate and then exposed to an alpha-naphthyl phosphate solution. Differential pulse voltammetry was finally used to detect the alpha-naphthol oxidation signal. Mixtures of DNA samples from different bacteria were detected at the nanomolar level without any cross-interference. The selectivity of the assay was also confirmed by the analysis of PCR products unrelated to the immobilised probes.

Variable Very-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Emission from the Microquasar LS I +61 303

Microquasars are binary star systems with relativistic radio-emitting jets. They are potential sources of cosmic rays and can be used to elucidate the physics of relativistic jets. We report the detection of variable gamma-ray emission above 100 gigaelectron volts from the microquasar LS I 61 + 303. Six orbital cycles were recorded. Several detections occur at a similar orbital phase, which suggests that the emission is periodic. The strongest gamma-ray emission is not observed when the two stars are closest to one another, implying a strong orbital modulation of the emission or absorption processes.

Dendritic-like streptavidin/alkaline phosphatase nanoarchitectures for amplified electrochemical sensing of DNA sequences

This study describes the development and characterization of a novel dendritic-like signal amplification pathway. Such an analytical strategy relies on the use of streptavidin and biotinylated alkaline phosphatase, which can be simply and conveniently self-assembled to build nanoarchitectures rich in enzyme labels. The performance of this enzyme-based amplification route was demonstrated in connection with the electrochemical sensing of DNA sequences. Compared to the commercially available streptavidin-conjugated alkaline phosphatase labels, a single generation of the streptavidin/biotinylated alkaline phosphatase assembly allowed a 15-20-fold enhancement of the electroanalytical signals. The higher sensitivity allowed by the dendritic-like route was attributed to the lower steric hindrance of the proteins employed for this amplification path. As low as 50 pmol/L of a 388-bp-long amplicon identifying Salmonella spp. was easily detected. The experimental results additionally demonstrated that the sensitivity of the method could be further increased in a linear fashion with the number of protein-enzyme generations.
