A comparative analysis of colour-emotion associations in 16-88-year-old adults from 31 countries

As people age, they tend to spend more time indoors, and the colours in their surroundings may significantly impact their mood and overall well-being. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence to provide informed guidance on colour choices, irrespective of age group. To work towards informed choices, we investigated whether the associations between colours and emotions observed in younger individuals also apply to older adults. We recruited 7393 participants, aged between 16 and 88 years and coming from 31 countries. Each participant associated 12 colour terms with 20 emotion concepts and rated the intensity of each associated emotion. Different age groups exhibited highly similar patterns of colour-emotion associations (average similarity coefficient of .97), with subtle yet meaningful age-related differences. Adolescents associated the greatest number but the least positively biased emotions with colours. Older participants associated a smaller number but more intense and more positive emotions with all colour terms, displaying a positivity effect. Age also predicted arousal and power biases, varying by colour. Findings suggest parallels in colour-emotion associations between younger and older adults, with subtle but significant age-related variations. Future studies should next assess whether colour-emotion associations reflect what people actually feel when exposed to colour.

Unleashing the room temperature boronization: Blooming of Ni-ZIF nanobuds for efficient photo/electro catalysis of water

Water splitting provides an environmental-friendly and sustainable approach for generating hydrogen fuel. The inherent energetic barrier in two-core half reactions such as the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) and Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) leads to undesired increased overpotential and constrained reaction kinetics. These challenges pose significant challenges that demand innovative solutions to overcome. One of the efficient ways to address this issue is tailoring the morphology and crystal structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOF). Nickel Zeolite Imidazolate Framework (Ni-ZIF) is a popular MOF and it can be tailored using facile chemical methods to unleash a remarkable bifunctional electro/photo catalyst. This innovative solution holds the capability to address prevailing obstacles such as inadequate electrical conductivity and limited access to active metal centers due to the influence of organic ligands. Thereby, applying boronization to the Ni-ZIF under different duration, one can induce blooming of nanobuds under room temperature and modify oxygen vacancies in order to achieve higher reaction kinetics in electro/photo catalysis. It can be evidenced by the 24-h boronized Ni-ZIF (BNZ), exhibiting lower overpotentials as electrocatalyst (OER-396 mV & HER-174 mV @ 20 mA/cm2) in 1 M KOH electrolyte and augmented gas evolution rates when employed as a photocatalyst (Hydrogen-14.37 μmol g-1min-1 & Oxygen-7.40 μmol g-1min-1). The 24-h boronization is identified as the optimum stage of crystalline to amorphous transformation which provided crystalline/amorphous boundaries as portrayed by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and High Resolution-Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) analysis. The flower-like transformation of 24-BNZ, characterized by crystalline-amorphous boundaries initiates with partial disruption of Ni-N bonds and formation of Ni-B bonds as evident from X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Further, the 24-h BNZ exhibit bifunctional catalytic activities with pre-longed stability. Overall, this work presents a comprehensive study of the electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water splitting properties of the tailored Ni-ZIF material.

Clinical and economic burden of benign and malignant skin lesions in renal transplant recipients

BACKGROUND

Studies evaluating the economic burden of dermatological care in the transplant setting are currently not available in Australia.

AIMS

To evaluate the clinical and economic burden of benign and malignant skin lesions in renal transplant recipients in Central Queensland.

METHODS

A bottom-up approach was used to determine the clinical burden and direct costs from patient-level Medicare data obtained from Service Australia for skin lesions.

RESULTS

Seventy-six percent of the renal transplant population in Central Queensland participated in this study. The median age was 57.0 years (standard deviation ± 13.6) and the majority (61.8%) of participants were men. The mean duration after transplant surgery was 99.9 months (interquartile range, 73.2-126.6 months). During a 2-year follow-up, 22 (40%) patients were diagnosed with benign skin lesions, 21 (38%) with nonmelanoma skin carcinoma (NMSC) and one (2%) with melanoma. There was a total of 231 visits to clinicians for diagnostic and therapeutic skin procedures and the direct costs to Medicare was $48 806 Australian Dollars (AUD) or $30 427 US Dollars (USD). Approximately 86% of the total direct costs was spent for nonNMSC and mean direct costs for NMSC was $763 AUD (or $476 USD).

CONCLUSION

This Medicare data-based study provides further insight into the burgeoning clinical and economic burden of the care for benign and malignant skin lesions in the renal transplantation setting in Australia.

Survival of Trial-Like and Non-Trial-Like Patients With Immunotherapy in Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Real World: A Collaborative Multicenter Indian Study (IMHEP)

PURPOSE

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) is the initial line of management in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but survivals in the real world are not known.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A retrospective study of patients with advanced HCC receiving ICIs (as first-line therapy or as later lines of therapy) across 11 Indian institutions was conducted. Patients were divided into either cohort 1 (trial-like receiving ICI as first-line therapy), with a Child Pugh score (CTP) of ≤6, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) of 0/1, and no VP4 (main portal vein thrombosis [MPVT]) or cohort 2 (trial unlike) who did not satisfy at least one of the above criteria. The primary end point was 12-month overall survival (OS).

RESULTS

Between January 2017 and January 2022, 133 patient data were analyzed. The presence of MPVT was seen in 33 patients (25%). The ICIs used were atezolizumab-bevacizumab, nivolumab, and pembrolizumab in 89 (66%), 44 (33%), and one (1%) patients, respectively. With a median follow-up of 13.8 months, the 12-month OS for the entire cohort was 33.4% (95% CI, 23.6 to 43.2). Patients in cohort 1 (n = 31) had a significantly improved OS compared with patients in cohort 2 (n = 102; 12-month OS, 57.9% [95% CI, 38.5 to 77.3] v 24% [95% CI, 13.4 to 34.6]; P = .005). Patients with CTP A as compared with CTP B (9.7 v 4.3 months; P < .001) and an ECOG PS of 0/1 as compared with a PS of ≥2 (8.7 v 7.2 months; P = .04) and without MPVT (9.4 v 4.0; P < .001) had superior survivals.

CONCLUSION

Patients with advanced HCC in the real world, trial-like have survivals in consonance with trial data, whereas patients with features excluding them from trials, such as main portal vein thrombosis, poor ECOG PS, and child Pugh B status, have markedly inferior survivals, despite good tolerance to immunotherapy.

A Heat Transfer Model and Supporting Experiments to Guide the Uniform Gelation of Molecular Oleogels During Scale-up

The quest for novel vegetable oil structuring strategies has been progressing since the discovery of the deleterious impacts of trans fats. Although oleogelation using bioderived molecular gelators has been proven to be successful as an alternative to traditional hydrogenation methods, efforts are needed to meet the industrial requirements. A major constraint during the fabrication of oleogels is to achieve consistency in physical properties during scale-up. Experiments showed that gelation fails to occur when larger volumes were prepared based on the minimum gelation concentration (MGC) of gelators, determined using the smallest oil volume (1 mL), a general laboratory practice. This observation was consistent with all the molecular gelators used in this study; sorbitol dioctanoate, mannitol dioctanoate, and 12-hydroxystearic acid. To understand this behavior, a mathematical model was developed since gelator network propagation is governed by the cooling rate. The model indicates that maintenance of a minimal thermal gradient via uniform heat dissipation and gelation time is necessary to achieve homogeneous gel propagation across the vial. With these predictions, we hypothesized and confirmed that oleogels with constant surface area-to-volume ratio could result in identical gelation times and consistent physical properties (MGC, melting temperature, melting enthalpy, yield stress, solid phase content, and oil binding capacity) during scale-up.

Self-assembled Trehalose Amphiphiles as Molecular Gels: A Unique Formulation to Wax-free Cosmetics

Trehalose has been used as an emollient and antioxidant in cosmetics. However, we aimed to explore trehalose amphiphiles as oil structuring agents for the preparation of gel-based lip balms as part of wax-free cosmetics. This article describes the synthesis of trehalose fatty acyl amphiphiles and their corresponding oleogel-based lip balms. Trehalose dialkanoates were synthesized by esterifying the two primary hydroxyls of trehalose with fatty acids (C4-C12) using a facile, regioselective lipase catalysis. The gelation potential of as-synthesized amphiphiles was evaluated in organic solvents and vegetable oils. Stable oleogels were subjected to X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal (DSC), and rheological studies and further used for the preparation of lip balms. Trehalose dioctanoate (Tr8), trehalose didecanoate (Tr10) were found to be super gelators as their minimum gelation concentration is ≤ 0.2 wt%. XRD studies revealed their hexagonal columnar molecular packing while forming the fibrillar networks. Rheometry proved that the fatty acyl chain length of amphiphiles can influence the strength and flow properties of oleogels. Further rheometry (at 25 °C, 37 °C, and 50 °C) and DSC studies have validated that Tr8- and Tr10-based oleogels are stable for commercial applications. Tr8- and Tr10-based olive oil oleogels were used for the preparation of lip balms. The preliminary results suggested that the cumulative effect of trehalose's emolliency and vegetable oil gelling nature can be achieved with trehalose amphiphiles, specifically, Tr8 and Tr10. This study has also demonstrated that Tr8- and Tr10-based lip balms can be used as an alternative to beeswax and plant wax lip balms, indicating their huge potential to succeed as a new paradigm to formulate wax-free cosmetics.

Sucralose hydrogels: Peering into the reactivity of sucralose versus sucrose under lipase catalyzed trans-esterification

Sucralose differs from sucrose only by virtue of having three Cl groups instead of OH groups. Its intriguing features include being noncaloric, noncariogenic, ∼600 times sweeter than sucrose, stable at high temperatures/acidic pH's, and void of disagreeable aftertastes. These properties are attractive as food additive, one of which is as hydrogel obtainable via the technique of molecular gelation using a sucralose-derived low-molecular weight gelator (LMWG). Such hydrogels are highly responsive to external stimuli like temperature, because the LMWGs self-assemble via non-covalent interactions and could thus be utilized in applications like control-release. We found that sucralose to be unreactive under lipase biocatalysis, unlike sucrose. Hence, the aim of this work was (i) to use computational simulations to further understand sucralose's lack of enzymatic reactivity and (ii) to synthesize the sucralose-based amphiphiles using conventional chemical synthesis and systematically study their tendency towards hydrogelation. Sucrose and sucralose were docked with a high-resolution atomic structure of lipase B from Candida antarctica, modeling the esterification transition state with an active site serine. In extended molecular dynamics simulations, sucrose remained in the active site due to multiple sugar-protein hydrogen bonds. The oxygen-to-chlorine substitutions in sucralose disrupted this hydrogen bonding network. Consistent with observed lack of enzymatic conversion, in multiple simulations, sucralose would rapidly dissociate from the active site. The sucralose-based LMWGs were subsequently synthesized using base-catalyzed conventional chemical synthesis. Three of the sucralose-based amphiphiles (SL-5, SL-6 and SL-7) proved to be successful hydrogelators. The gelators also showed the ability to gel selected beverages. The LMWGs gelled quantities of water and beverage up to 71 and 55 times their weight, respectively, and remain thermally stable up to 144 °C.

Building Blocks of the Protective Suberin Plant Polymer Self-Assemble into Lamellar Structures with Antibacterial Potential

The protection of terrestrial plants from desiccation, mechanical injury, and pathogenic invasion is achieved by waxes and cutin polyesters on leaf and fruit surfaces as well as suberin polymers that are embedded in the cell walls of roots, but the physicochemical principles governing the organization of these biological composites remain incompletely understood. Despite the well-established enzymatic mediation of suberin formation in the skins of potato tubers, cork oak trees, and internal plant tissues, the additional possibility of self-assembly in this system was suggested by our serendipitous finding that solvent extracts from potato phellem tissues form suspended fibers and needles in the absence of such catalysts over a period of several weeks. In the current study, we investigated self-assembly for three-component model chemical mixtures comprised of a hydroxyfatty acid, glycerol, and either of two hydroxycinnamic acids that together typify the building blocks of potato suberin biopolymers. We demonstrate that these mixtures spontaneously form lamellar structures that are reminiscent of suberized plant tissues, incorporate all constituents into self-assemblies, can form covalently bound ester structures, and display antibacterial activity. These findings provide new perspectives on the self-association and reactivity of these classes of organic compounds, insights into agriculturally important suberin formation in food crops, and a starting point for engineering sustainable materials with antimicrobial capabilities.

The effect of high intensity interval training on patients with heart transplantation: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Exercise rehabilitation after heart transplant is of major importance in order to improve physical capacity and prognosis.High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has repeatedly proven to be a highly efficient form of exercise for improving the physical capacity of both normal subjects and patients with coronary artery diseases (CAD) and heart failure. In contrast to the chronotropic response of a normal heart to exercise, a newly transplanted heart is denervated, which causes higher resting heart rate (HR) and reduced heart response (chronotropic incompetence). The HR response during exercise is mainly controlled by catecholamine’s from the adrenal glands, resulting in a significantly slower increase of the HR at onset of exercise, a reduced peak HR, and a delayed return towards resting values after cessation of exercise.  A study conducted in 2013 concluded  that high-intensity, aerobic training, especially interval-based training, is a favourable type of exercise that yields improvements in both peripheral and central factors.The review was conducted to determine the effect of HIIT on heart transplant patients.I

PURPOSE

Heart transplant patients have benefitted from aerobic exercises, but the protocol is mostly focussed on moderate intensity exercises. Chronotropic incompetence and safety have been two issues while considering high intensity exercises in heart transplant patients.HIIT has been proved to be effective in coronary artery disease and heart failure patients.

METHODOLOGY

"Mesh" terms used to search the article. Various databases like PubMed, Scopus, Google scholar, Cochrane screened. Inclusion and exclusion criteria stated. Studies done between 2010-2020 taken.Out of all the studies screened, which 3 studies fulfilled the full text eligibility and were included in the systematic review.

RESULTS

The heart transplant patients  demonstrated a  great improvement in VO2 peak, anaerobic threshold, peak expiratory flow, extensor muscle capacity, general health, systolic blood pressure and endothelial function post HIIT. One of the screened studies compared HIIT with moderate intensity exercises in heart transplant patients and found out that patients receiving HIIT demonstrated better improvement that moderate intensity exercises.The studies also emphasised that long term and community based HIIT is effective in improving the overall quality of life of the patients.

CONCLUSION

Selective isomer emission via funneling of exciton polaritons

Polaritons in organic systems has shown the potential to modify chemical properties and to mediate long-range energy transfer between individual chromophores, among other capabilities. Here, we demonstrate that strong coupling and formation of organic exciton-polaritons can be used to selectively tune the isomer emission of organic molecules. By taking advantage of their delocalized and hybrid character, polaritons emerging in the strong coupling regime open a new relaxation pathway that allows for an efficient funneling of the excitation between the molecular isomers. We implement this by strong coupling to trans-DCS (E-4-dimethylamino-4′cyanostilbene)molecules, which present two isomers in different amounts when immersed in a polymer matrix. Thanks to this new relaxation pathway, the photoexcitation that is first shared by the common polaritonic mode is then selectively funneled to the excited states of one of the isomers, recognizing pure emission from the isomeric states that do not contribute to emission under normal conditions.

Platinum-Pemetrexed Chemotherapy for Recurrent Ovarian Cancer (ROC): A Single Center Experience

In this retrospective analysis of 36 patients with recurrent ovarian cancer (ROC) treated with platinum pemetrexed doublet ± bevacizumab, the median age was 54.5 years (47-60) and 33 (91.7%) had serous histology. The overall response rate [ORR = complete (CR)+partial (PR) response] was 83.3%. At a median follow-up of 16 months, the median PFS was 13.8 months (95% CI: 10.849-20.580) and median OS 30.6 months, (95% CI: 21.46 months-NR). The incidence of Grade 3/4 anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia and non-hematological toxicity was 19.4%, 3.9%, 16.6%, and 8.3%. Platinum pemetrexed chemotherapy in ROC is safe and effective treatment option.

Phase-Selective Gelation of the Water Phase in an Oil-Water Mixture: An Approach Based on Oil-Activated Nanoparticle Assembly in Water

Phase-selective gelation refers to the selective gelation of one phase in an immiscible mixture. Thus far, all such examples have involved a molecular gelator forming nanofibers in (and thus gelling) the oil phase in an oil/water mixture. Here, for the first time, we report the counterpart to the above phenomenon, i.e., selective gelation of the water phase in an oil/water mixture (while leaving the oil undisturbed). This has been a challenging problem because moieties that gel water tend to be either amphiphilic or oil-soluble; thus, if combined with an oil/water mixture, they invariably form an emulsion. Our approach solves this problem by exploiting the tunable self-assembly of laponite (LAP) nanoparticles. Initially, LAP nanoparticles (25 nm disks) are dispersed in water, where they remain unaggregated due to the steric stabilization provided by a triblock copolymer (Pluronic P123) adsorbed on their surface. Thus, the dispersion is initially a low-viscosity sol. When an immiscible oil such as hexadecane is introduced above the sol, the mixture remains biphasic, and both phases remain unaffected. Next, an organic acid such as butanoic acid (BA) is added to the oil. The BA is oil-soluble but also has limited solubility in the water. Over about 30 min, some of the BA enters the water, whereupon it "activates" the self-assembly of LAP particles into a three-dimensional "house-of-cards" network. Ultimately, the water phase is converted into a homogeneous gel with a sufficient yield stress: the aqueous gel holds its weight in the inverted vial while the oil phase remains a thin liquid that can be poured out of the vial. On the whole, the concept advanced here is about activating nanoparticle assembly in water through an adjacent, immiscible phase. This concept could prove useful in conducting certain separations or reactions in the laboratory as well as in enhanced oil recovery.

PD1/PD-L1 Expressions in Plasmablastic Lymphoma with Clinicopathological Correlation

The activation of the programmed cell death one (PD1)/PD1 ligand (PD-L1) immune checkpoint pathway is a mechanism of immune evasion characterized by the upregulation of PD-L1 expression by tumor cells and by the tumor microenvironment. This activation leads to the inhibition of PD1-positive T cells and to a decrease in the anti-tumor immune response. Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive type of large B-cell lymphoma with limited studies on the frequency of PD1 and PD-L1 expressions and their clinical impact. As PBL is associated with immune suppression in immunocompromised individuals, we hypothesize that the PD1/PD-L1 axis may be relevant in this type of lymphoma. Our study demonstrates a subset of PBL cases with a higher PD-L1 expression by tumor cells [nPD-L1^high, in 4 of 21 (19%) cases] and by tumor microenvironment [macrophages/stromal cells, sPD-L1^high, in 9 of 21 (43%) cases]. While nPD-L1 expression showed no significant correlation with PD1 expression on tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, or other clinicopathological parameters, it positively correlated with sPD-L1 expression. Moreover, patients with nPD-L1^high had a tendency towards a shorter overall survival (median 9.3 vs. 25.5 months in nPD-L1^low patients). In conclusion, our study provides a rationale to identify, by immunohistochemistry, a subset of nPD-L1^high patients who may benefit from clinical trials of PD1/PD-L1 checkpoint blockade. Further studies on large cohorts are needed to investigate prognostic and predictive biomarkers for the PD1/PD-L1 pathway in PBL patients.

Light-Assisted Rechargeable Lithium Batteries: Organic Molecules for Simultaneous Energy Harvesting and Storage

Lithium batteries that could be charged on exposure to sunlight will bring exciting new energy storage technologies. Here, we report a photorechargeable lithium battery employing nature-derived organic molecules as a photoactive and lithium storage electrode material. By absorbing sunlight of a desired frequency, lithiated tetrakislawsone electrodes generate electron-hole pairs. The holes oxidize the lithiated tetrakislawsone to tetrakislawsone while the generated electrons flow from the tetrakislawsone cathode to the Li metal anode. During electrochemical operation, the observed rise in charging current, specific capacity, and Coulombic efficiency under light irradiation in contrast to the absence of light indicates that the quinone-based organic electrode is acting as both photoactive and lithium storage material. Careful selection of electrode materials with optimal bandgap to absorb the intended frequency of sunlight and functional groups to accept Li-ions reversibly is a key to the progress of solar rechargeable batteries.

Tuning Aesthetic and Mechanical Properties of Oleogels via Formulation of Enzyme-Enabled Stereoisomeric Molecular Gelators

The mechanistic resemblance of oil-based molecular gels (oleogels) to solid fats (trans and saturated) makes molecular gelation an ideal alternative in developing fat-based food and cosmetic products. The recent upsurge in the preference for oleogels (structured oils) is due to them being healthier than conventional solid fats. The present study reveals a simple means of modulating the mechanical and aesthetic properties of oleogels by physically mixing two isomeric low-molecular-weight gelators, mannitol dioctanoate (M8) and sorbitol dioctanoate (S8), which have contrasting oil-structuring behaviors; while M8 formed oleogels with a higher gel strength, the S8 gels were more aesthetic, translucent, and appealing. The gelators were synthesized by enzyme catalysis (a generally regarded as safe protocol). The M8/S8 gels were systematically and thoroughly characterized using a suite of analytical techniques, including minimum gelation concentration, gel melting point, rheological storage modulus, oil binding capacity, light transmittance, and optical microscopy. The results showed that the percentage of light transmittance, which is associated with aesthetics, increased from about 40 to 95% with an increasing fraction of S8 from 0 to 1. Parameters associated with mechanical strength, such as rheology, were also quite responsive to varying proportions of the gelators. The storage modulus (G', a rheological property) increased from about 3300 to about 12 500 Pa with an increasing fraction of M8. As the fraction of M8 increased, the solid fat content (SFC) changed from about 3.51 to 2.08%, while the oil binding capacity changed from about 70.2 to 100.0. This work enables the modulation of the aesthetic and organoleptic properties of a gel via a simple formulation of stereoisomeric molecular gelators.

Impact of an evidence-based intervention on urinary catheter utilization, associated process indicators, and infectious and non-infectious outcomes

BACKGROUND

Multi-centre intervention studies tackling urinary catheterization and its infectious and non-infectious complications are lacking.

AIM

To decrease urinary catheterization and, consequently, catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and non-infectious complications.

METHODS

Before/after non-randomized multi-centre intervention study in seven hospitals in Switzerland. Intervention bundle consisting of: (1) a concise list of indications for urinary catheterization; (2) daily evaluation of the need for ongoing catheterization; and (3) education on proper insertion and maintenance of urinary catheters. The primary outcome was urinary catheter utilization. Secondary outcomes were CAUTIs, non-infectious complications and process indicators (proportion of indicated catheters and frequency of catheter evaluation).

FINDINGS

In total, 25,880 patients were included in this study [13,171 at baseline (August-October 2016) and 12,709 post intervention (August-October 2017)]. Catheter utilization decreased from 23.7% to 21.0% (P=0.001), and catheter-days per 100 patient-days decreased from 17.4 to 13.5 (P=0.167). CAUTIs remained stable at a low level with 0.02 infections per 100 patient-days (baseline) and 0.02 infections (post intervention) (P=0.98). Measuring infections per 1000 catheter-days, the rate was 1.02 (baseline) and 1.33 (post intervention) (P=0.60). Non-infectious complications decreased significantly, from 0.79 to 0.56 events per 100 patient-days (P<0.001), and from 39.4 to 35.4 events per 1000 catheter-days (P=0.23). Indicated catheters increased from 74.5% to 90.0% (P<0.001). Re-evaluations increased from 168 to 624 per 1000 catheter-days (P<0.001).

CONCLUSION

A straightforward bundle of three evidence-based measures reduced catheter utilization and non-infectious complications, whereas the proportion of indicated urinary catheters and daily evaluations increased. The CAUTI rate remained unchanged, albeit at a very low level.

Bioderived Molecular Electrodes for Next-Generation Energy-Storage Materials

Nature-derived organic small molecules, as energy-storage materials, provide low-cost, recyclable, and non-toxic alternatives to inorganic and polymer electrodes for lithium-/sodium-ion batteries and beyond. Some organic carbonyl compounds have met or exceeded the voltages and gravimetric storage capacities achieved by traditional transition metal oxide-based compounds due to the metal-ion coupled redox and facile electron-transport capability of functional groups. Stability issues that previously limited the capacity of small organic molecules can be remediated with reactions to form insoluble salts, noncovalent interactions (hydrogen bonding and π stacking), loading onto substrates, and careful electrolyte selection. The cost-effectiveness and sustainability of organic materials may further be improved by employing porphyrin-based electrodes and multivalent-ion batteries utilizing abundant metals, such as aluminum and zinc. Finally, redox flow batteries take advantage of the solubility of organics for the development of scalable, high power density, and safe energy-storage devices based on aqueous electrolytes. Herein, the advantages and prospects of small molecule-based electrodes, with a focus on nature-derived organic and biomimetic materials, to realize the next-generation of green battery chemistry are reviewed.

Staged implant placement after defect regeneration using biphasic calcium phosphate materials with different surface topographies in a minipig model

OBJECTIVE

To assess the influence of biphasic calcium phosphate materials with different surface topographies on bone formation and osseointegration of titanium implants in standardized alveolar ridge defects.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Standardized alveolar ridge defects (6 × 6 mm) were created in the mandible of 8 minipigs and filled with three biphasic calcium phosphate materials (BCP1-3, 90% tricalcium phosphate/10% hydroxyapatite) with different surface properties (micro- and macroporosities) as well as a bovine-derived natural bone mineral (NBM) as a control. At 12 weeks, implants were placed into the augmented defects. After further 8 weeks of healing, dissected blocks were processed for histological analysis (e.g., mineralized (MT), residual bone graft material (BS), bone-to-implant contact (BIC)).

RESULTS

All four biomaterials showed well-integrated graft particles and new bone formation within the defect area. MT values were comparable in all groups. BS values were highest in the NBM group (21.25 ± 13.52%) and markedly reduced in the different BCP groups, reaching statistical significance at BCP1-treated sites (9.2 ± 3.28%). All test and control groups investigated revealed comparable and statistically not significant different BIC values, ranging from 73.38 ± 20.5% (BCP2) to 84.11 ± 7.84% (BCP1), respectively.

CONCLUSION

All bone graft materials facilitated new bone formation and osseointegration after 12 + 8 weeks of healing.

Urinary tract infections in renal transplant recipients at a quaternary care centre in Australia

Background

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are the most common of infections after renal transplantation. The consequences of UTIs in this population are serious, with increased morbidity and hospitalisation rates as well as acute allograft dysfunction. UTIs may impair overall graft and patient survival. We aimed to identify the prevalence and risk factors for post-transplant UTIs and assess UTIs’ effect on renal function during a UTI episode and if they result in declining allograft function at 2 years post-transplant. Additionally, the causative organism, the class of antibacterial drug employed for each UTI episode and utilisation rates of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) prophylaxis were also quantified.

Methods

This was a retrospective study of 72 renal transplant patients over a 5-year period who were managed at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Patient charts, pathology records and dispensing histories were reviewed as part of this study and all UTIs from 2 years post transplantation were captured.

Results

Of these patients, 20 (27.8%) had at least one UTI. Older age (p = 0.015), female gender (p < 0.001), hyperglycaemia (p = 0.037) and acute rejection episodes (p = 0.046) were risk factors for developing a UTI on unadjusted analysis. Female gender (OR 4.93) and age (OR 1.03) were statistically significant risk factors for a UTI on adjusted analysis. On average, there was a 14.4% (SEM 5.20) increase in serum creatinine during a UTI episode, which was statistically significant (p = 0.027), and a 9.1% (SEM 6.23) reduction in serum creatinine after the UTI episode trending toward statistical significance.

(p = 0.076). Common organisms (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) accounted for 82% of UTI episodes with 70% of UTI cases requiring only a single course of antibiotic treatment. Furthermore, the antibiotic class used was either a penicillin (49%) or cephalosporin (36%) in the majority of UTIs. The use of TMP/SMX prophylaxis for Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia prophylaxis did not influence the rate of UTI, with > 90% of the cohort using this treatment.

Conclusions

There was no significant change in serum creatinine and estimated glomerular filtrate rate from baseline to 2 years post-transplant between those with and without a UTI.

Discovery of aspirin-triggered eicosanoid-like mediators in a Drosophila metainflammation blood tumor model

Epidemiologic studies have linked the use of aspirin to a decline in chronic inflammation that underlies many human diseases, including some cancers. Aspirin reduces the levels of cyclooxygenase-mediated pro-inflammatory prostaglandins, promotes the production of pro-resolution molecules, and triggers the production of anti-inflammatory electrophilic mono-oxygenated (EFOX) lipid mediators. We investigated the effects of aspirin in fruit fly models of chronic inflammation. Ectopic Toll/NF-κB and JAK/STAT signaling in mutant D. melanogaster results in overproliferation of hematopoietic blood progenitors resulting in the formation of granuloma-like tumors. Ectopic JAK-STAT signaling also leads to metabolic inflammation. We report that aspirin-treated mutant flies experience reduction in metabolic inflammation, mitosis, ectopic immune signaling, and macrophage infiltration. Moreover, these flies synthesize 13-HODE, and aspirin triggers 13-oxoODE (13-EFOX-L₂) production. Providing the precursor of 13-HODE, linoleic acid, or performing targeted knockdown of the transcription factor STAT in inflammatory blood cells, boosts 13-EFOX-L₂ levels while decreasing metabolic inflammation. Thus, hematopoietic cells regulate metabolic inflammation in flies, and their effects can be reversed by pharmaceutical or dietary intervention, suggesting deep phylogenetic conservation in the ability of animals to resolve inflammation and repair tissue damage. These findings can help identify novel treatment targets in humans.

Freestanding organogels by molecular velcro of unsaturated amphiphiles

A simple amphiphile, N-cardanyltaurine amide (NCT) with different degrees of cis-unsaturation in its tail resulted in the formation of strong organogels. Interestingly, this is in contrast to the commonly accepted notion that introducing unsaturation in alkyl chains enhances fluidity in lipid assemblies. The physico-chemical and first-principles DFT calculations confirmed the pegging of 'kinked' unsaturated side chains, where the hydrophobic interlocking as in Velcro fasteners leads to a network of cylindrical micelles, resulting in self-standing organogels. Textural profile analysis and spectroscopic details substantiated the dynamic assembly to resemble a 3D network of gelators rather than being a cross-linked or polymerized matrix of monomers.

Specialized Roles of Human Natural Killer Cell Subsets in Kidney Transplant Rejection

Background: Human natural killer (NK) cells are key functional players in kidney transplant rejection. However, the respective contributions of the two functionally distinct human NK cell subsets (CD56bright cytokine-producing vs. CD56dim cytotoxic effector) in episodes of allograft rejection remain uncertain, with current immunohistochemical methods unable to differentiate these discrete populations. We report the outcomes of an innovative multi-color flow cytometric-based approach to unequivocally define and evaluate NK cell subsets in human kidney allograft rejection. Methods: We extracted renal lymphocytes from human kidney transplant biopsies. NK cell subsets were identified, enumerated, and phenotyped by multi-color flow cytometry. Dissociation supernatants were harvested and levels of soluble proteins were determined using a multiplex bead-based assay. Results were correlated with the histopathological patterns in biopsies-no rejection, borderline cellular rejection, T cell-mediated rejection (TCMR), and antibody-mediated rejection (AMR). Results: Absolute numbers of only CD56bright NK cells were significantly elevated in TCMR biopsies. In contrast, both CD56bright and CD56dim NK cell numbers were significantly increased in biopsies with histopathological evidence of AMR. Notably, expression of the activation marker CD69 was only significantly elevated on CD56dim NK cells in AMR biopsies compared with no rejection biopsies, indicative of a pathogenic phenotype for this cytotoxic NK cell subset. In line with this, we detected significantly elevated levels of cytotoxic effector molecules (perforin, granzyme A, and granulysin) in the dissociation supernatants of biopsies with a histopathological pattern of AMR. Conclusions: Our results indicate that human NK cell subsets are differentially recruited and activated during distinct types of rejection, suggestive of specialized functional roles.

Unique Photophysical Behavior of Coumarin-Based Viscosity Probes during Molecular Self-Assembly

Intermolecular interactions impact self-assembly phenomena having a variety of bio/chemical, physical, and mechanical consequences. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms leading to a controlled stereo- and chemo-specific aggregation at the molecular level often remain elusive because of the intrinsically dynamic nature of these processes. Herein, we describe two 3-styryl coumarin molecular rotors capable of probing subtle intermolecular interactions controlling the self-assembly of a small-molecule organogelator. Complementing the characterization of the gel via circular dichroism and atomic force microscopy, thorough spectroscopic investigations on these sensors were carried out to prove their high chemical and spatial affinity toward the 3D supramolecular network. The results were further supported by molecular dynamics simulations to reveal further critical insights into the gelator's dynamic self-assembly mechanism. These sensors could potentially serve as templates to study a variety of soft-supramolecular architectures and the ways in which they assemble.

Volatility and fluctuations in preferences for Red, Yellow and Blue colours are indicators of personality traits and biological status

Response to colour is an outcome of complex interactions between retinal neurophysiology and light. This paper puts forward the hypothesis that the sequence of preferences for the three primary colours Red, Yellow and Blue could provide cues to the personality of an individual. The sequence of preferences will harbour hidden patterns or algorithms that are linked to personality traits. The fluctuations or volatility observed in these preferences carefully recorded over a large number of observations will throw up interesting patterns that can be linked to personality traits. The data from a number of subjects will be used to identify similarities in colour preference patterns that match with personality types that have been determined using standardised tools for identifying personality types. The protocols to be followed for testing the hypothesis have been detailed. Statistical analyses of the data sets are suggested. The subjects that will be studied will hopefully be a source of data that will lead to unveiling the complexities of various personality types and personality traits. It will not be out of place to assume that the data generated can be extrapolated to read the biological and physiological conditions also.

Different ommochrome pigment mixtures enable sexually dimorphic Batesian mimicry in disjunct populations of the common palmfly butterfly, Elymnias hypermnestra

With varied, brightly patterned wings, butterflies have been the focus of much work on the evolution and development of phenotypic novelty. However, the chemical structures of wing pigments from few butterfly species have been identified. We characterized the orange wing pigments of female Elymnias hypermnestra butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) from two Southeast Asian populations. This species is a sexually dimorphic Batesian mimic of several model species. Females are polymorphic: in some populations, females are dark, resemble conspecific males, and mimic Euploea spp. In other populations, females differ from males and mimic orange Danaus spp. Using LC-MS/MS, we identified nine ommochrome pigments: six from a population in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and five compounds from a population in Bali, Indonesia. Two ommochromes were found in both populations, and only two of the nine compounds have been previously reported. The sexually dimorphic Thai and Balinese populations are separated spatially by monomorphic populations in peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and Sumatra, suggesting independent evolution of mimetic female wing pigments in these disjunct populations. These results indicate that other butterfly wing pigments remain to be discovered.

Unravelling the secret of seed-based gels in water: the nanoscale 3D network formation

Chia (Salvia hispanica) and basil (Ocimum basilicum) seeds have the intrinsic ability to form a hydrogel concomitant with moisture-retention, slow releasing capability and proposed health benefits such as curbing diabetes and obesity by delaying digestion process. However, the underlying mode of gelation at nanoscopic level is not clearly explained or explored. The present study elucidates and corroborates the hypothesis that the gelling behavior of such seeds is due to their nanoscale 3D-network formation. The preliminary study revealed the influence of several conditions like polarity, pH and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity on fiber extrusion from the seeds which leads to gelation. Optical microscopic analysis clearly demonstrated bundles of fibers emanating from the seed coat while in contact with water, and live growth of fibers to form 3D network. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies confirmed 3D network formation with fiber diameters ranging from 20 to 50 nm.

Lumbosacral osteosarcoma with dural spread, skip lesions and intravascular extension: A case report

Primary osteosarcoma of the spine is indeed rare and only several sporadic cases have been reported. It tends to occur in a slightly older age group than those with appendicular skeleton tumours. We present here an unusual case of aggressive lumbosacral osteosarcoma in a young teenager complicated by extensive dural spread, skip lesions and intravascular extension. Although a histopathological examination is mandatory to establish the diagnosis, this case emphasises the need of imaging to ascertain the full extent of disease spread especially in deciding the type of treatment to be instituted and to evaluate the response to the treatment.

A common tattoo chemical for energy storage: henna plant-derived naphthoquinone dimer as a green and sustainable cathode material for Li-ion batteries

The burgeoning energy demands of an increasingly eco-conscious population have spurred the need for sustainable energy storage devices, and have called into question the viability of the popular lithium ion battery. A series of natural polyaromatic compounds have previously displayed the capability to bind lithium via polar oxygen-containing functional groups that act as redox centers in potential electrodes. Lawsone, a widely renowned dye molecule extracted from the henna leaf, can be dimerized to bislawsone to yield up to six carbonyl/hydroxyl groups for potential lithium coordination. The facile one-step dimerization and subsequent chemical lithiation of bislawsone minimizes synthetic steps and toxic reagents compared to existing systems. We therefore report lithiated bislawsone as a candidate to advance non-toxic and recyclable green battery materials. Bislawsone based electrodes displayed a specific capacity of up to 130 mA h g⁻¹ at 20 mA g⁻¹ currents, and voltage plateaus at 2.1–2.5 V, which are comparable to modern Li-ion battery cathodes.

Radiation-Responsive Esculin-Derived Molecular Gels as Signal Enhancers for Optical Imaging

Recent interest in detecting visible photons that emanate from interactions of ionizing radiation (IR) with matter has spurred the development of multifunctional materials that amplify the optical signal from radiotracers. Tailored stimuli-responsive systems may be paired with diagnostic radionuclides to improve surgical guidance and aid in detecting therapeutic radionuclides otherwise difficult to image with conventional nuclear medicine approaches. Because light emanating from these interactions is typically low in intensity and blue-weighted (i.e., greatly scattered and absorbed in vivo), it is imperative to increase or shift the photon flux for improved detection. To address this challenge, a gel that is both scintillating and fluorescent is used to enhance the optical photon output in image mapping for cancer imaging. Tailoring biobased materials to synthesize thixotropic thermoreversible hydrogels (a minimum gelation concentration of 0.12 wt %) offers image-aiding systems which are not only functional but also potentially economical, safe, and environmentally friendly. These robust gels (0.66 wt %, ∼900 Pa) respond predictably to different types of IRs including β- and γ-emitters, resulting in a doubling of the detectable photon flux from these emitters. The synthesis and formulation of such a gel are explored with a focus on its physicochemical and mechanical properties, before being utilized to enhance the visible photon flux from a panel of radionuclides as detected. The possibility of developing a topical cream of this gel makes this system an attractive potential alternative to current techniques, and the multifunctionality of the gelator may serve to inspire future next-generation materials.

Fat for the future: designing multifunctional molecular oleogels

With the deadline for replacing partially hydrogenated oils less than a year away, there is a compelling need to develop functional, healthy, and nutritious materials that can be used to turn liquid oils into semi-solid fats. Toward that end, our research group has successfully demonstrated the design and synthesis of a new family of naturally derived molecular gelators through a simple GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) protocol. These gelators can potentially form stable oleogels with a variety of vegetable oils for food and personal care applications.

Sugar based amphiphiles: easily accessible and efficient crude oil spill thickening agents

In this work, we demonstrate the use of biomass for the catalytic production of phase-selective gelators (PSGs) as a cost-effective, environmentally benign and ideal method for crude oil spill remediation, as well as execute the study exclusively in crude oil. The use of PSGs has recently provided great promise relative to that of their traditional counterparts. However, the use of PSGs with crude oil is much more complicated due to its complex composition. All of the current PSG methods are demonstrated with refined oils or do not employ eco-friendly methods like enzymatic synthesis. Our current project entails studying sugar alcohol-derived amphiphiles for their phase-selective gelation in crude oil; the PSGs are derived from renewable, benign materials and synthesized via a simple, single-step, enzymatic catalysis that required no purification. The results showed that, after a rigorous and systematic testing, the mannitol-derived amphiphile using 8-carbon alkyl chain length (M-8) turned out to be the best crude oil PSG among the studied amphiphiles. M-8 demonstrated a versatility towards thickening of different crude oil types, an efficient ability towards selective gelation of the oil (forming crude oil gel that is over sixty-one-times its mass and stable up to 109.7 °C) in a crude oil/water mixture, and an ability to form gel under practical situations such as seawater conditions. These qualities, in addition to the use of a simple and environmentally benign method to synthesize the structuring agents, make this amphiphile very practical in real life application.

In Situ Synthesis of Metal Nanoparticle Embedded Hybrid Soft Nanomaterials

The allure of integrating the tunable properties of soft nanomaterials with the unique optical and electronic properties of metal nanoparticles has led to the development of organic-inorganic hybrid nanomaterials. A promising method for the synthesis of such organic-inorganic hybrid nanomaterials is afforded by the in situ generation of metal nanoparticles within a host organic template. Due to their tunable surface morphology and porosity, soft organic materials such as gels, liquid crystals, and polymers that are derived from various synthetic or natural compounds can act as templates for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles of different shapes and sizes. This method provides stabilization to the metal nanoparticles by the organic soft material and advantageously precludes the use of external reducing or capping agents in many instances. In this Account, we exemplify the green chemistry approach for synthesizing these materials, both in the choice of gelators as soft material frameworks and in the reduction mechanisms that generate the metal nanoparticles. Established herein is the core design principle centered on conceiving multifaceted amphiphilic soft materials that possess the ability to self-assemble and reduce metal ions into nanoparticles. Furthermore, these soft materials stabilize the in situ generated metal nanoparticles and retain their self-assembly ability to generate metal nanoparticle embedded homogeneous organic-inorganic hybrid materials. We discuss a remarkable example of vegetable-based drying oils as host templates for metal ions, resulting in the synthesis of novel hybrid nanomaterials. The synthesis of metal nanoparticles via polymers and self-assembled materials fabricated via cardanol (a bioorganic monomer derived from cashew nut shell liquid) are also explored in this Account. The organic-inorganic hybrid structures were characterized by several techniques such as UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Utilization of silver nanoparticle-based hybrid nanomaterials as an antimicrobial material is another illustration of the advantage of hybrid nanomaterials. We envision that the results summarized in this Account will help the scientific community to design and develop diverse organic-inorganic hybrid materials using environmentally benign methods and that these materials will yield advanced properties that have multifaceted applications in various research fields.
