Abstract
Abstract
This case describes a cardiac tamponade in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an uncommon but life-threatening condition that needs prompt recognition.
A 33-year-old woman with therapy-resistant SLE presented to the Emergency Department with chest pain and fever for 3 days. She was hemodynamically stable, the ECG showed signs of pericarditis and echocardiography showed a minimal pericardial effusion. Pericarditis was diagnosed and the patient was admitted to the Cardiology Ward. Seven hours later her symptoms deteriorated, presenting hemodynamic instability with hypotension and tachycardia. The ECG showed low QRS voltage and electrical alternans, echocardiography confirmed cardiac tamponade. The patient underwent an emergency pericardiocentesis with 220 mL of serous citrine liquid removed and immediate regression of symptoms. The cytology exam revealed inflammatory cells with no evidence of malignancy, blood culture and effusion fluid's tests came back negative. A Thoraco-abdominal CT revealed also bilateral pleural effusion (not present at the admission) and ascites. Signs, symptoms and medical history suggested SLE flare-up and high-dose oral glucocorticoid therapy was started.
Our report highlights a rare presentation of life-threatening polyserositis in SLE flare-up. Although pericarditis and pericardial effusion are frequently-reported SLE's cardiovascular complications, rapid development of cardiac tamponade is far from common. Acute cardiac tamponade, like in our case, is an indication for emergency pericardial drainage to restore an adequate cardiac output.
We describe an out of ordinary case of a patient in whom an accurate and timely diagnosis of SLE–related cardiac tamponade has been live–saving.

1130 ZEBRA HOOFBEATS: A RARE CASE OF STEMI IN GRANULOMATOUS NECROTIZING AORTITIS. Eur Heart J Suppl 2022. Abstract
Abstract
We present the unusual case of an AMI STEMI, complicated by ventricular fibrillation, in a 26 years old caucasic male patient, affected by necrotizing and granulomatous aortitis, in the context of a primary immunodeficiency.
Initially the patient was referred to the Cardiology Unit for worsening dyspnea and fatigue. In his medical history he has primary immunodeficiency complicated by multiple opportunistic infections.
We performed an echocardiography that revealed an aneurismatic ascending aorta (58 mm) with associated significant aortic valvular regurgitation. He was later referred to heart surgery OR where Bentall-De Bono operation was performed. Two years later he developed a lateral STEMI, complicated by ventricular fibrillation. The coronary angiography, performed in foreign country, showed total occlusion of the circumflex coronary artery with diffuse aneurismatic coronary disease, granulomatosis and ulcerative lesions. A percutaneous revascularization approach was tried, but ineffective.
Actually the patient, during follow up, presents dilatative post-ischemic cardiopathy with moderate ejection fraction reduction, initial aortic bioprosthesis failure. We noted at follow up echocardiograms early dilatation of the native aortic arch (35 mm), suggesting a progressive disease.
In conclusion, AMI's etiology includes many non atherosclerotic mechanisms that should be considered alongside common causes.
This case shows a rare cause of STEMI in a very young male patient, and teaches us that aortitis is a progressive and complex pathology, often involving multiple arteriosus districts, that needs close follow-up and integrated management.

Stand age, degree of encroachment and soil characteristics modulate changes of C and N cycles in dry grassland soils invaded by the N 2-fixing shrub Amorpha fruticosa. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2021; 792:148295. Abstract
The N2-fixing shrub Amorpha fruticosa L. is rapidly spreading in the dry riparian natural grasslands of Europe, altering ecosystem functions and depleting plant diversity. Alteration of the N cycle represents the key factor involved in invasions by N2-fixing plants with cascading effects on plant species richness. We hypothesized that A. fruticosa encroachment strongly impacts not only the N but also the C cycle and that the magnitude of such alterations may be modulated by soil characteristics. To test these hypotheses, we selected four river floodplains in North East of Italy and compared natural uninvaded grasslands with half invaded and completely invaded sites, based on A. fruticosa stand characteristic and relevant leaf traits and on soil properties related to soil texture and to C and N cycles. Soil organic matter mineralisation, ammonification and nitrification rates were determined. Soil nitrification increased remarkably with plant invasion while ammonification was significantly higher only in half invaded sites. Soil organic matter mineralisation, microbial biomass C sustained per soil organic C unit and nitrification positively correlated with stand age, regardless to the stage of the encroachment. Mineralisation and nitrification increased with soil organic C and total N in uninvaded and completely invaded sites, but decreased in half invaded sites. At the half invasion stage, trends in nitrification and CO2 mineralisation were transitionally reverted and remediation may be facilitated by less pronounced changes in soil properties compared to completely invaded sites. Direct effects of plant invasion are modulated by the action of soil characteristics such as soil organic C and clay contents, with soils rich in organic C showing larger nitrification and mineralisation rates.

A MIP-based low-cost electrochemical sensor for 2-furaldehyde detection in beverages. Anal Chim Acta 2021; 1142:201-210. Abstract
There is an increasing interest in determining the concentration of furanic compounds naturally formed in food aqueous matrices, by in situ, fast and low-cost methods. A sensor presenting such characteristics is here proposed, and characterized. It is based on a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) as a receptor with electrochemical transduction on a screen printed cell (SPC). The molecularly imprinted polymer has been developed for a particular furanic derivative, 2-furaldehyde (2-FAL). The detection bases on the reduction of 2-FAL selectively adsorbed on the polymer layer in contact with the working electrode. The polymer layer is simply formed by in situ polymerization, directly over the SPC and it was characterized by IR, SEM and electrochemical methods. Even if based on an easy and fast preparation procedure, the layer sufficiently adheres to the cell surface giving a reusable sensor. Square wave voltammetry (SWV) was applied as the signal acquisition method. The sensor performance in aqueous solution (NaCl 0.1 M) was tested, obtaining that the dose-response curve is fitted by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The sensitivity, and so the limit of detection, were noticeably improved by a chemometric approach based on the Design of experiment method. (optimized conditions: Estep = 0.03 V, Epulse = 0.066 V, f = 31 s-1). In water solution at pH around neutrality the dynamic range was from about 50 μM to 20 mM. Similar results were obtained for a white wine containing 12% ethanol, which has been considered as a typical example of beverage possibly containing furhaldehydes. The higher limit of quantification can be modulated by the amount of MIP deposited, while the lower detection limit by the conditions of the electrochemical measurement.

Detection of EGFR-Activating and T790M Mutations Using Liquid Biopsy in Patients With EGFR-Mutated Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Whose Disease Has Progressed During Treatment With First- and Second-Generation Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors: A Multicenter Real-Life Retrospective Study. Clin Lung Cancer 2020; 21:e464-e473. Abstract
BACKGROUND In advanced epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients whose disease has progressed during treatment with first- and second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), liquid biopsy (LB) is routinely used to evaluate the presence of EGFR T790M as an acquired resistance mechanism. The objective of this study was to assess a real-life picture of EGFR T790M detection in LB. MATERIALS AND METHODS Liquid biopsies performed between June 2016 and October 2018 for advanced EGFR-mutated NSCLC at disease progression during treatment with first- and second-generation TKIs were retrospectively evaluated in 5 Italian centers. Circulating tumor DNA was extracted from plasma and tested with different commercial kits. The detection rate in LBs and the patients' characteristics were correlated. RESULTS We enrolled 120 consecutive patients. The overall T790M detection rate observed using LB was 25.8%. Fifty-four of 89 (60.7%) patients with negative LB results underwent tissue rebiopsy, and 56% were positive for T790M. The overall rate of T790M positivity in the study cohort was 49.2%. LB performed before formal tumor progression according to Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors criteria was negative for T790M in all patients (n = 21; P = .012). T790M positivity was statistically significantly higher in cases of disease progression at extrathoracic metastatic sites (P = .008) and, specifically, in the case of worsening bone disease (P = .003). CONCLUSION Our study shows that the detection of T790M-positive patients whose disease progressed during treatment with first- and second-generation TKIs in real life was according to the literature. However, this result was obtained with a specific clinical course (repeat LBs and tissue rebiopsy), thus implying the necessity for multidisciplinary management.

Abstract
Gross primary productivity (GPP), the gross uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) by plant photosynthesis, is the primary driver of the land carbon sink, which presently removes around one quarter of the anthropogenic CO2 emissions each year. GPP, however, cannot be measured directly and the resulting uncertainty undermines our ability to project the magnitude of the future land carbon sink. Carbonyl sulfide (COS) has been proposed as an independent proxy for GPP as it diffuses into leaves in a fashion very similar to CO2, but in contrast to the latter is generally not emitted. Here we use concurrent ecosystem-scale flux measurements of CO2 and COS at four European biomes for a joint constraint on CO2 flux partitioning. The resulting GPP estimates generally agree with classical approaches relying exclusively on CO2 fluxes but indicate a systematic underestimation under low light conditions, demonstrating the importance of using multiple approaches for constraining present-day GPP.

Abstract
Gamasine mites, mainly of the taxon Dermanyssina, possess a secondarily evolved insemination system (sperm access system), of which there are two, generally recognized, structurally different types, the laelapid- and the phytoseiid-type. The ultrastructure of the female sperm access system in Afrocypholaelaps africana is described. It consists of paired insemination pores, opening between the bases of legs three and four, and paired cuticle-lined tubules that converge into a large, sack-like spermatheca, remarkably cuticle-lined as well. The entire spermatheca and part of the tubules are embedded in a peculiar syncytial tissue where numerous sperm cells are present. The general organization of this insemination system is of the laelapid-type. However, it presents striking structural differences, compared with the systems described in Varroa destructor and Hattena cometis, the other gamasine mites having a laelapid-type system studied ultrastructurally until now. The functional morphology, complexity and variations of the sperm access system in Dermanyssina are discussed and correlated with the evolutionary biology of the group.

Ultrastructural and functional adaptations of the female reproductive system in the family Heterozerconidae (Acari, Anactinotrichida, Gamasida, Heterozerconina) and implications for the systematic position of the group. Abstract
Heterozerconidae is a poorly known, early derived mite family belonging to Heterozerconina (Monogynaspida, Gamasida (= Mesostigmata)). The systematic position of the family is still controversial and little is known about the biology and anatomy of the taxon. In this paper, the gross anatomy, ultrastructure and functional morphology of the female reproductive system are described comparing genera from different geographic areas. The occurence of podospermy (i.e. the use of a sperm transfer process carried by the fixed digit of the male chelicerae to inseminate females through secondary insemination pores instead of through the oviporus) as insemination mode in this family was documented. Nevertheless, morphological and functional evidence in the reproductive system of the females supports the idea that, in the same family, more than one insemination mode is present: some genera are plesiomorphically tocospemic (i.e. insemination through the oviporus) while others switched to podospermy. Such discovery is of fundamental importance for the determination of the relationship between the family Heterozerconidae and the family Discozerconidae, both belonging tentatively to Heterozerconina and for the phylogenetic position of the Heterozerconina among Gamasida.

Abstract
AIM Reliability of the assessment of peripheral fatigue induced in knee extensors by high-intensity intermittent running exercise (HIE) was established in ten amateur soccer players (age: 18±1, height: 178±5 cm, weight: 68±8 kg). METHODS Transcutaneous electrical stimulations before and after HIE determined muscle contractile properties on three separate occasions (T1, T2 and T3), each separated by 7 days. RESULTS No significant differences were noted for any of the parameters measured (P=0.101). The ICC values for peak torque (PT) varied from moderate to high, with the exception of PT at 10-Hz calculated comparing T2 vs. T1 (range PRE=0.78-0.92; POST=0.76-0.97). The ICC derived from PT percentage decrements data were all low, with the exception of PT decrements at 1 Hz calculated comparing T3 vs. T2 (ICC=0.85, moderate). The TE for all contractile parameters obtained using 1-Hz and 100-Hz electrical stimulations were below 10%, including some that demonstrated a TE lower than 5%. Muscle contractile properties determined using 10-Hz stimulations showed a higher level of TE (range: 3.2-15.1%). Similar results were obtained for maximal rate of torque development and torque relaxation. CONCLUSION From the results of this study it can be concluded that muscle contractile properties express a good level of reliability in baseline and postexercise measures following familiarization.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of the guidelines on oral health published by the Italian Health Ministry. STUDY DESIGN 1239 patients (582 girls and 657 boys) with a mean age of 4.46 (SD 2.81) years were evaluated before application of the guidelines by paediatricians (T0) for the presence of caries, gingivitis, diseases of the oral mucosa, and malocclusion. Only patients aged 6 months, 3 years, 6 years, and 9 years at T0 were taken into consideration. All patients were reevaluated after application of the ministerial guidelines (T1). METHODS the study took place over a 3-year period. Enrolled patients referred to the outpatient clinics of three paediatricians of the Province of Genoa who strictly applied the ministerial guidelines. STATISTICS Chi square test analysis was performed to evaluate a statistically significant decrease in the incidence of caries, gingivitis and diseases of the oral mucosa. RESULTS After a 3-year follow-up collected data underlined a statistically significant decrease in the incidence of dental caries, gingivitis and oral mucosal diseases after implementation of the recommended ministerial guidelines. A statistically significant decrease of malocclusions was also evident in the elder patients (12 years old at T1). CONCLUSION The accurate implementation of the Guidelines is supported. Only collaboration and increased synergy between paedodontists and paediatricians can fulfill the objectives which were the reason for publishing the "National guidelines for the promotion of oral health and the prevention of oral diseases in developmental age".

Abstract
We compared the accuracy of 2 GPS systems with different sampling rates for the determination of distances covered at high-speed and metabolic power derived from a combination of running speed and acceleration. 8 participants performed 56 bouts of shuttle intermittent running wearing 2 portable GPS devices (SPI-Pro, GPS-5 Hz and MinimaxX, GPS-10 Hz). The GPS systems were compared with a radar system as a criterion measure. The variables investigated were: total distance (TD), high-speed distance (HSR>4.17 m·s(-1)), very high-speed distance (VHSR>5.56 m·s(-1)), mean power (Pmean), high metabolic power (HMP>20 W·kg(-1)) and very high metabolic power (VHMP>25 W·kg(-1)). GPS-5 Hz had low error for TD (2.8%) and Pmean (4.5%), while the errors for the other variables ranged from moderate to high (7.5-23.2%). GPS-10 Hz demonstrated a low error for TD (1.9%), HSR (4.7%), Pmean (2.4%) and HMP (4.5%), whereas the errors for VHSR (10.5%) and VHMP (6.2%) were moderate. In general, GPS accuracy increased with a higher sampling rate, but decreased with increasing speed of movement. Both systems could be used for calculating TD and Pmean, but they cannot be used interchangeably. Only GPS-10 Hz demonstrated a sufficient level of accuracy for quantifying distance covered at higher speeds or time spent at very high power.

Systematic bias between running speed and metabolic power data in elite soccer players: influence of drill type. Int J Sports Med 2013; 35:489-93. Abstract
The aims of the present study were to: i) evaluate the agreement between estimates of high-intensity activity during soccer small-sided games (SSGs) based on running speed alone and estimated metabolic power derived from a combination of running speed and acceleration; ii) evaluate whether any bias between the 2 approaches is dependent upon playing position or drill characteristics. 3 types of SSGs (5vs5, 7vs7 and 10vs10) were completed by 26 English Premier League outfield players. A total of 420 individual drill observations were collected over the in-season period using portable global positioning system technology. High-intensity activity was estimated using the total distance covered at speeds>14.4 km · h(-1) (TS) and the equivalent metabolic power threshold of > 20 W · kg(-1) (TP). We selected 0.2 as the minimally important standardised difference between methods. High-intensity demands were systematically higher (~100%, p<0.001) when expressed as TP vs. TS irrespective of playing position and SSG. The magnitude of this difference increased as the size of SSG decreased (p<0.01) with a difference of ~200% observed in the 5vs5 SSG. A greater difference between TP and TS was also evident in central defenders compared to other positions (p<0.05) particularly during the 5vs5 SSG (~350%). We conclude that the high-intensity demands of SSGs in elite soccer players are systematically underestimated by running speed alone particularly during "small" SSGs and especially for central defenders. Estimations of metabolic power provide a more valid estimation as to the true demands of SSGs.

Abstract
A precision measurement by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the positron fraction in primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.5 to 350 GeV based on 6.8 × 10(6) positron and electron events is presented. The very accurate data show that the positron fraction is steadily increasing from 10 to ∼ 250 GeV, but, from 20 to 250 GeV, the slope decreases by an order of magnitude. The positron fraction spectrum shows no fine structure, and the positron to electron ratio shows no observable anisotropy. Together, these features show the existence of new physical phenomena.

Abstract
We compared measurements of high-intensity activity during field-based training sessions in elite soccer players of different playing positions. Agreement was appraised between measurements of running speed alone and predicted metabolic power derived from a combination of running speed and acceleration. Data was collected during a 10-week phase of the competitive season from 26 English Premier League outfield players using global positioning system technology. High-intensity activity was estimated using the total distance covered at speeds >14.4 km · h⁻¹ (TS) and the equivalent metabolic power threshold of >20 W · kg⁻¹ (TP), respectively. We selected 0.2 as the -minimally important standardised difference between methods. Mean training session TS was 478±300 m vs. 727±338 m for TP (p<0.001). This difference was greater for central defenders (~ 85%) vs. wide defenders and attackers (~ 60%) (p<0.05). The difference between methods also decreased as the proportion of high-intensity distance within a training session increased (R2=0.43; p<0.001). We conclude that the high-intensity demands of soccer training are underestimated by traditional measurements of running speed alone, especially in training sessions or playing positions associated with less high-intensity activity. Estimations of metabolic power better inform the coach as to the true demands of a training session.

Abstract
AIM This was to clarify dentoalveolar, skeletal and facial profile modifications induced by Fränkel II functional treatment in Class II division 1 subjects in prepubertal stages CS1-2. MATERIALS AND METHODS Evaluation of 25 caucasian subjects (15 males, 10 females), mean age 8y 11m, in vertebral stages CS1-2. The mean duration of functional treatment was 1y 11m. STUDY DESIGN Prospective controlled study. The sample was evaluated at T0, start of treatment, and T1, end of Fränkel II therapy. Untreated subjects in Class II division 1 were the control group. STATISTICS T-test for paired data was calculated before and after treatment (P< 0.05). RESULTS A statistically significant increase between T0 and T1 was obtained for SNB (p = 0.022), ANB (p <0.001), Mx/Mn differential (p = 0.001), Co-Go-Me (p = 0.014), OJ (p < 0.001), OB (p = 0.042), IMPA (p = 0.021) . OJ (p < 0.001) and OB (p = 0.003) showed a higher significant change in the Fränkel group compared to control group. CONCLUSION The Fränkel II appliance produced, in CS1-2 subiects, significant effects in teeth position, skeletal modifications and soft tissue changes, although the pubertal growth spurt would occur at least two years later.

Abstract
The salivary α-amylase is a calcium-binding enzyme that initiates starch digestion in the oral cavity. The α-amylase genes are located in a cluster on the chromosome that includes salivary amylase genes (AMY1), two pancreatic α-amylase genes (AMY2A and AMY2B) and a related pseudogene. The AMY1 genes show extensive copy number variation which is directly proportional to the salivary α-amylase content in saliva. The α-amylase amount in saliva is also influenced by other factors, such as hydration status, psychosocial stress level, and short-term dietary habits. It has been shown that the average copy number of AMY1 gene is higher in populations that evolved under high-starch diets versus low-starch diets, reflecting an intense positive selection imposed by diet on amylase copy number during evolution. In this context, a number of different aspects can be considered in evaluating the possible impact of copy number variation of the AMY1 gene on nutrition research, such as issues related to human diet gene evolution, action on starch digestion, effect on glycemic response after starch consumption, modulation of the action of α-amylases inhibitors, effect on taste perception and satiety, influence on psychosocial stress and relation to oral health.

Abstract
In this study, a forward dynamic subject specific 3-actuator torque-driven model of the human musculoskeletal system was created based on measurements of individual characteristics of a subject. Simulation results were compared with experimental vertical squat jumping with and without adding weights. By analyzing kinematic and kinetic experimental data at the instant of the toe-off for the same initial conditions, it was shown that a simple computer simulation using a suitable cost function could reproduce the real task performed by humans. This investigation is the first step in a wider project that will incorporate elastic components, and that will evaluate the advantages of the individual subject approach in modeling.

Abstract
ABSTRACTThe presence of H3PO3 in the synthesis of zirconium diphosphonates in dimethylsulfoxide, other than the expected dilution of the pillars, which in turn gives rise to a certain degree of microporosity, may also induce the formation of a high percentag. of mesopores. E.g., compounds with high surface area(300–500 m2 /g) of which 60–70% is due to mesopores with diameters 20–40 Å and the remaining is due to micropores, were obtained. It was furthermore found that the distribution of the mesopores was fairly narrow. Compounds with micropores <3 Å and mesopores of 20–30 Å behave in practice as pure and narrow mesoporous solids;they are therefore of great interest as new molecular inorgano-organic sieves.

Abstract
ABSTRACTThe H2O3PCH(C6H4)2CH2PO3H2 and H2O3PO(C6H4)2OPO3H2 acids were synthesizedT and used to obtain new pillared zirconium phosphonates and organic phosphates in which the pillars are tilted with respect to the layers. The Zr(O3PCH2(C6H4)2CH2PO3) and Zr(O3PO(C6H4)2OPO3) obtained have a good thermal resistance and the distance between the inorganic α-layers joined by the organic pillars is 14.7 and 13.8 Å, respectively. Structural models suggest that the biphenyl groups in the solids are tilted at 140° and 137° with respect to the perpendicular at the layer plane. Solid solutions of the two derivatives over the whole range of composition have also been obtained; the distance between the α-layers changes from 14.7 to 13.8 Å in a continuous way as the diphosphate groups replace the diphosphonate ones, allowing us to suppose a variation of the tilting angles. Attempts to remove the phosphoester in the mixed derivatives by hydrolytic attack, and to replace some pillars with phosphite groups are described.

NAD(P)H oxidase and pro-inflammatory response during maximal exercise: role of C242T polymorphism of the P22PHOX subunit. Int J Immunopathol Pharmacol 2010; 23:203-11. Abstract
Intense exercise induces a pro-inflammatory status through a mechanism involving the NAD(P)H oxidase system. We focused our attention on p22phox, a subunit of the NAD(P)H oxidase, and on its allelic polymorphism C242T, which is known to affect the functional activity of the enzyme. We investigated whether the p22phox C242T variants exhibit systemic effects in healthy subjects by analyzing the proinflammatory and cardiocirculatory responses to physical exercise in endurance athletes. The group of study consisted of 97 long distance runners, 37 +/- 4.4 yrs of age, with similar training history. The subjects underwent a maximal stress test during which both inflammatory and cardiopulmonary parameters were monitored. Our results demonstrate that T allele deeply influences the neutrophil activation in response to intense exercise, since T carriers were characterized by significantly lower release of myeloperoxidase (MPO), a classical leukocyte derived pro-inflammatory cytokine. In addition, the presence of T allele was associated with a higher cardiopulmonary efficiency as evidenced by a significantly lower Heart Rate (HR) at the peak of exercise and, when a dominant model was assumed, by a higher maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max). On the other hand, no effects of 242T mutation on the plasmatic total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and on the cortisol responses to the physical exercise were detected. In conclusion, our data support a systemic role for p22phox C242T polymorphism that, modifying the intensity of the inflammatory response, can influence the cardiovascular adaptations elicited by aerobic training. These results contribute to support the hypothesis of a systemic effect for the C242T polymorphism and of its possible functional rebound in healthy subjects.

Histological and ultrastructural characterization of the alimentary system of solifuges (Arachnida, Solifugae). J Morphol 2010; 271:225-43. Abstract
Solifuges are voracious and fast predators. Once having captured a prey item, mostly small arthropods or even small vertebrates, they start feeding on their prey by constant chewing movements with their huge chelicerae. At the same time, they squeeze out the soft tissue that passes the anterior lattice-like part of the mouthparts. The digestion of the food takes place in the midgut, which is anatomically highly complex. It consists of the midgut tube from which numerous prosomal and opisthosomal diverticula and tubular lateral branches arise. The dimorphic epithelium of the midgut tube and the diverticula is constituted of digestive and secretory cells. The digestive cells are characterized by an apical tubulus system and contain nutritional vacuoles, lipids, spherites, and glycogen. Secretory cells contain a huge amount of rough endoplasmic reticulum and secretory vacuoles. The lateral branches are ultrastructurally similar to Malpighian tubules and are likely involved in excretion. In contrast to the midgut, the epithelium of the hindgut consists of only one type of cell overlain by a thin cuticle. Digested residuals are stored in the hindgut until defecation.

Abstract
AIMS To develop risk prediction models of future diabetes in Mauritian Indians. METHODS Three thousand and ninety-four Mauritian Indians (1141 men, aged 20-65 years) without diabetes in 1987 or 1992 were followed up to 1992 or 1998. Subjects underwent repeated oral glucose tolerance tests and diabetes was diagnosed according to 2006 World Health Organization/International Diabetes Federation criteria. Cox regression models for interval censored data were performed using data from 1544 randomly selected participants. Predicted probabilities for diabetes were calculated and validated in the remaining 1550 subjects. RESULTS Over 11 years of follow-up, there were 511 cases of diabetes. Among variables tested, family history of diabetes, obesity (body mass index, waist circumference) and glucose were significant predictors of diabetes. Predicted probabilities derived from a simple model fitted with sex, family history of diabetes and obesity ranged from 0.05 to 0.64 in men and 0.03 to 0.49 in women. To predict the onset of diabetes, area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AROC) of predicted probabilities was 0.62 (95% confidence interval, 0.56-0.68) in men and 0.64 (0.59-0.69) in women. At a cut-off point of 0.12, the sensitivity and specificity were 0.72 (0.71-0.74) and 0.47 (0.45-0.49) in men and 0.77 (0.75-0.78) and 0.50 (0.48-0.52) in women, respectively. Addition of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) to the model improved the prediction slightly [AROC curve 0.70 (0.65-0.76) in men, 0.71 (0.67-0.76) in women]. CONCLUSIONS A diabetes prediction model based on obesity and family history yielded moderate discrimination in Mauritian Indians, which was slightly inferior to the model with the FPG but may be useful in low-income countries to promote identification of people at high risk of diabetes.

Abstract
Males of Parasitina and Dermanyssina (Gamasida=Mesostigmata) have chelicerae modified to function as gonopods. The slit-like spermatotreme in the movable digit of the chela in males of Parasitina was studied in three species: in Pergamasus quisquiliarum and Holoparasitus sp. a rather simple slit is indeed present, whereas in Vulgarogamasus kraepelini the structure is represented by a fine duct traversing the movable digit. The spermatodactyl studied in two phytoseioid species (Phytoseiulus persimilis, Blattisocius dentriticus) of Dermanyssina is a slender process arising from the movable digit and containing a fine duct which is formed by cuticular folds. The spermatodactyl of these species thus differs remarkably from that described in Veigaia sp. The diversity of these structures seen in the few taxa studied up to now is discussed under functional and systematic aspects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ageing of the human heart is characterised by morphological, functional and metabolic changes. Short-term interventions and cross-sectional studies in older individuals questioned the possibility that physical exercise may reverse these alterations. In this study we aimed to assess whether in middle-aged men involved in regular and long lasting physical activity these alterations were attenuated. DESIGN Left ventricular (LV) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and three-dimensional image selected in-vivo spectroscopy (3D-ISIS) (31)P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) were performed using a 1.5T scanner in 20 healthy, young and 25 healthy middle-aged non-obese men with a sedentary lifestyle (11 young and 14 middle-aged) or undergoing regular aerobic oxidative training (9 young and 11 middle-aged). Insulin sensitivity was estimated by the homeostatic model assessment 2 (HOMA-2) model. RESULTS Sedentary young and middle-aged men were not different with respect to LV morphological parameters and systolic function. The phosphocreatine/ATP (PCr/ATP) ratio (marker of high energy phosphates metabolism) and the LV E-peak filling rate/A-peak filling rate ratio (E/A ratio) were lower in sedentary middle-aged than physically active subjects. Parameters of LV systolic function and the PCr/ATP ratio were not different in the middle-aged compared with the young trained men; the E/A peak flow ratio was higher in the middle-aged trained men than in the middle-aged sedentary men. Within the entire population, the PCr/ATP ratio and the E/A peak flow ratio were associated with insulin sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS Trained middle-aged subjects showed a better pattern of LV energy metabolism and of diastolic function than their sedentary counterparts. At this age the exercise-related cardiac benefits were detectable when physical exercise was performed regularly and for a long period of time.

Abstract
Ricinulei possess movable, slender pedipalps with small chelae. When ricinuleids walk, they occasionally touch the soil surface with the tips of their pedipalps. This behavior is similar to the exploration movements they perform with their elongated second legs. We studied the distal areas of the pedipalps of the cavernicolous Mexican species Pseudocellus pearsei with scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Five different surface structures are characteristic for the pedipalps: (1) slender sigmoidal setae with smooth shafts resembling gustatory terminal pore single-walled (tp-sw) sensilla; (2) conspicuous long, mechanoreceptive slit sensilla; (3) a single, short, clubbed seta inside a deep pit representing a no pore single walled (np-sw) sensillum; (4) a single pore organ containing one olfactory wall pore single-walled (wp-sw) sensillum; and (5) gustatory terminal pore sensilla in the fingers of the pedipalp chela. Additionally, the pedipalps bear sensilla which also occur on the other appendages. With this sensory equipment, the pedipalps are highly effective multimodal short range sensory organs which complement the long range sensory function of the second legs. In order to present the complete sensory equipment of all appendages of the investigated Pseudocellus a comparative overview is provided.

Abstract
Solifugae possess an evertable, adhesive pedipalpal organ (suctorial organ) at the tip of the distal tarsus of each pedipalp that is unique among arachnids. When inverted inside the pedipalp, the suctorial organ is covered with two cuticular lips, a dorsal upper lip and a ventral lower lip, but it can be protruded rapidly in order to facilitate grasping prey or climbing on bushes or even climbing on smooth surfaces due to its remarkable adhesive properties. In this study, the suctorial organs of different species from old world families Galeodidae and Karschiidae and new world families Ammotrechidae and Eremobatidae were investigated by means of light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In all representatives, the suctorial organ is formed by an evertable, cuticular pad with a complex internal stabilizing structure. The procuticle of this pad consists of a lattice-like basal plate and numerous stalked structures connected to this basal plate. The shafts of the stalked structures are regularly organized and ramify apically. The surface of the suctorial organ is constituted of a very thin epicuticle overlaying the ramifying apices forming ridges and furrows on the ventral side of the suctorial organ.

Abstract
Ultrastructural details of spermiogenesis, spermatozoa and the spermatophore of the early derived actinedid mite Saxidromus delamarei are described. Spermatids and mature sperm cells are provided with up to four acrosomal complexes and nuclei derivatives (chromatin bodies). Due to this reason, the sperm cells may be classified as synspermia, a sperm type found only in some spiders until now. The acrosomal complex is composed of a remarkably complicated vacuole and filament. Other peculiarities of sperm structure correspond to those found in prostigmatic mites, i.e. penetration of the chromatin body by the acrosomal filament and the presence of peripheral invaginations of the plasmalemma. The sperm cells are covered by a thin secretion layer of probably proteinaceous material. Stalked spermatophores are rather large, but simply structured and contain relatively few sperm cells. The results are discussed taking systematical and behavioural aspects into account. In particular, it is suggested that the peculiar mating behaviour of these mites secures both sperm transfer and first male's sperm priority and that this allowed reduction of sperm numbers.

Abstract
The dynamical behavior of circular dichroism for valence photoionization processes in pure enantiomers of randomly oriented methyl-oxirane molecules has been studied by circularly polarized synchrotron radiation. Experimental results of the dichroism coefficient obtained for valence photoionization processes as a function of photon energy have been compared with theoretical values predicted by state-of-the-art ab initio density-functional theory. The circular dichroism measured at low electron kinetic energies was as large as 11%. Trends in the experimental dynamical behavior of the dichroism coefficients D(i)(omega) have been observed. Agreement between experimental and theoretical results permits unambiguous identification of the enantiomer and of the individual orbitals.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Resistin is an adipokine associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes in animal models, but in humans its role remains uncertain. This study was undertaken to test whether serum resistin is related to insulin resistance and markers of low-grade inflammation in elite athletes taken as a model of extreme insulin sensitivity. SUBJECTS MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 23 elite athletes (sprinters, middle-distance and marathon runners) and in 72 sedentary men including lean and obese individuals with NGT, and obese individuals with IGT or new-onset type 2 diabetes, we assessed insulin sensitivity using a whole-body insulin-sensitivity index (WBISI) derived from a 3-h OGTT; energy homeostasis was also assessed by means of indirect calorimetry, along with circulating adipokines and low-grade pro-inflammatory cyto-chemokines. RESULTS Professional athletes had increased WBISIs (p<0.001) and lipid oxidation (p<0.03); they also showed higher serum resistin concentrations (p<0.001), although the pro-inflammatory chemokines were not increased in comparison with the other study groups. Resistin was independently associated only with fasting plasma NEFA. Increased resistin was detected in the middle-distance and marathon runners, but not in the sprinters when compared with the lean, young, sedentary individuals. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Serum resistin concentration is increased in elite athletes, providing evidence against the notion that resistin levels reflect insulin resistance in humans, as seen in animal studies. Increased resistin was observed in aerobic-endurance, but not sustained-power athletes and this feature appeared to be independently associated with parameters of fatty acid metabolism.

Abstract
A molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) membrane for atrazine, not containing macropores, was synthesized and implemented in a potentiometric sensor. It is expected to work like a solid ISE (where the specific carrier are the imprinted sites) the specific carrier being the imprinted site. The active ion is the protonated atrazine, positively charged. To form this species the determination is carried out in acidic solution at pH lower than 1.8, in which atrazine is prevalently monoprotonated. At these conditions the membrane potential increases with atrazine concentration over a wide concentration range (3 x 10(-5) to 1 x 10(-3)M). The slope of the function E versus logc is about 25 mV/decade, showing that the atrazine form sorbed on MIP is the biprotonated one. The detection limit is determined by the relatively high concentration of atrazine released by the membrane in the sample solution at the considered conditions. It seems to be independent of the atrazine concentration in the internal solution of the sensor, but it depends on the acidity of the solution. The response time is less than 10s and the sensor can be used for more than 2 months without any divergence.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this epidemiological study was to describe the incidence and distribution of hyperdontia in the primary school population in Genoa (Italy) and to check its influence on the development of orthodontic problems in children. The collected data should also help to find out what is the best age range among children to direct a program for early diagnosis and prevention of malocclusion and oral diseases related to hyperdontia. METHODS The participating children (total number 1577, 814 males and 763 females, between 6 and 10 years of age) chosen in 19 public primary schools in Genoa have been examined by the same specialist through year 2004. Erupted permanent teeth, presence, position and form of supernumerary teeth, malocclusion presence and class, presence of orthodontic devices, age and sex have been noted down for each child. RESULTS The global percentage of hyperdontia was 0.38%, more frequent in males (0.49%) than in females (0.26%). The most common kind of supernumerary tooth was mesiodens (83%). A significant increase of hyperdontia prevalence (from 0.64% to 1.06%) was noticed in children 9 years old. The incidence of malocclusion among children presenting hyperdontia was 83.3%, while the global incidence of malocclusion was 40%. An orthodontic treatment had been planned and started for 20% of children presenting malocclusion. CONCLUSION The study has revealed an incidence of hyperdontia much more frequent in males than in females (2:1). The most common site of eruption of supernumerary teeth is maxillary anterior region. Hyperdontia is strictly related with dental malocclusion. The best age range to direct a program of early diagnosis and prevention of malocclusion and hyperdontia is 9 years old children.

Spermatozoa and spermiogenesis of Holocnemus pluchei (Scopoli, 1763) (Pholcidae, Araneae). Tissue Cell 2005; 37:489-97. [PMID: 16289178 DOI: 10.1016/j.tice.2005.09.003] [Citation(s) in RCA: 12] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.6] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/22/2005] [Revised: 09/25/2005] [Accepted: 09/29/2005] [Indexed: 11/21/2022]
Abstract
Until now, the knowledge on pholcid spermatozoa is based on two species, Pholcus phalangioides and, incompletely, Holocnemus pluchei. To complete this knowledge and to reveal more potential phylogenetic characters, we have investigated sperm ultrastructure and spermiogenesis of H. pluchei. We found that the sperm cells of this species are clearly different from those of P. phalangioides with respect to: (1) the lack of specialization in the cylindrical acrosomal vacuole; (2) a nuclear canal which is located in the periphery and not in the center of the nucleus; (3) a more prominent postcentriolar elongation of the nucleus; (4) the presence of "inner microtubules" in the implantation fossa in early and mid-spermatids; (5) the absence of a helical band of nuclear material; (6) the proximal centriole which is not prolonged; (7) the types of secretion in the seminal fluid (only two types in H. pluchei). Similarities in the spermatozoa of both species concern: (1) a large implantation fossa which contains large amounts of glycogen in mature spermatozoa; (2) absence of a centriolar adjunct; (3) an axonemal basis located in the posterior part of the implantation fossa; (4) the formation of the so-called cleistospermia in the vas deferens. Our results strongly support systematic relationships within Pholcidae placing these two species in different subgroups.

Cardiovascular responses to aerobic step dance sessions with and without appendicular overload. J Sports Med Phys Fitness 2005; 45:264-9. [PMID: 16230975] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 05/04/2023]
Abstract
AIM Several studies showed that exercise intensity during aerobic step dance can be modified varying stepping rate, bench height and manipulating body mass using hand held or adding loads to the torso. The aim of this study was to determine the cardiovascular responses during aerobic step dance using an overload strategy not yet investigated: appendicular overload. METHODS Ten healthy and moderately trained women (mean+/-SD: age 27+/-3.4 years, height 167.8+/-4.6 cm, body mass 55.7+/-4.7 kg, body mass index 19.8+/-1.6, VO2max44.4+/-6.1 mLxkg-1xmin-1) performed an incremental treadmill test to determine VO2peak, the VO2-heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE)-HR relationships. Within 1 week from the laboratory test, the subjects performed two identical aerobic step dance routines: one using a track suit with loads placed in pockets close to the legs and arms and another without overload. RESULTS The appendicular overload (10% of body mass) significantly increased the exercise intensity from 84.5% to 89.8% of HRmax corresponding to 68.9% and 78.3% of VO2peak, respectively (P<0.01). Similarly, RPE increased from 12.1 to 15.7 (P<0.001). The estimated VO2 and the caloric expenditure rose from 30.3 to 34.7 mLxkg-1xmin-1 and from 251 to 288 kcal, respectively. CONCLUSION This study shows that the use of appendicular overload significantly increases the energy cost of aerobic step session similarly to other overload strategies already reported in the literature.

Aluminium speciation in natural water by sorption on a complexing resin. J Inorg Biochem 2005; 99:1779-87. [PMID: 16055193 DOI: 10.1016/j.jinorgbio.2005.06.017] [Citation(s) in RCA: 21] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.1] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/29/2005] [Revised: 06/14/2005] [Accepted: 06/16/2005] [Indexed: 11/16/2022]
Abstract
Very stable aluminium complexes may be present in natural waters, which can be detected only using appropriate methods. One of them is the resin titration based on the sorption of aluminium on a strongly sorbing resin, Chelex 100. It was here used to detect strong aluminium complexes, and to characterize them by determining their concentration, and the corresponding stability constant. High and low salinity waters were sampled in different sites in the North of Italy. In all the samples aluminium complexes with high stability constant, up to 10(17.4) M(-1) in the less acidic solution, were detected. The stability constant depends mainly on the solution acidity, increasing with increasing pH up to 7. The concentration of the ligands responsible for the strong complexation is similar to that of aluminium (from 0.5 to 1.5 microM), or somewhat lower in the case of estuarine and sea waters. A small fraction of aluminium (from 0% to 2%) in freshwaters, higher in estuarine and sea waters (14% and 10%, respectively), is present in weakly bound forms which could also be the hydrolysis products. The conditional constants of the strong complexes were determined for the different samples examined. They were found to be slightly lower in the case of the high salinity waters, in which a value of 10(16.1) M(-1) at pH 7.5 was obtained. This is probably due to the higher ionic strength in marine water, which strongly influences the complexation of trivalent metal ions, as seen for example also in the hydrolysis. It could be deduced that similar substances, but at different concentration, would be responsible for the aluminium complexation in the sea and freshwaters here examined. They could be natural organics like fulvic substances, or better some particular complexing sites in this substances with very high affinity for aluminium.
