Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the effectiveness and safety of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist monotherapy to combined androgen blockade (CAB) with a GnRH agonist and bicalutamide in patients with advanced hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (HSPC). METHODS The study was conducted as KYUCOG-1401 trial (UMIN000014243) and enrolled 200 patients who were randomly assigned to either group A (GnRH antagonist monotherapy followed by the addition of bicalutamide) or group B (CAB by a GnRH agonist and bicalutamide). The primary endpoint was PSA progression-free survival. The secondary endpoints were the time to CAB treatment failure, radiographic progression-free survival, overall survival, changes in serum parameters, including PSA, hormones, and bone and lipid metabolic markers, and adverse events. RESULTS PSA progression-free survival was significantly longer in group B (hazard ratio [HR], 95% confidence interval [CI]; 1.40, 1.01-1.95, p = 0.041). The time to CAB treatment failure was slightly longer in group A (HR, 95% CI; 0.80, 0.59-1.08, p = 0.146). No significant differences were observed in radiographic progression-free survival or overall survival. The percentage of patients with serum testosterone that did not reach the castration level was higher at 60 weeks (p = 0.046) in group A. No significant differences were noted in the serum levels of bone metabolic or lipid markers between the two groups. An injection site reaction was more frequent in group A. CONCLUSIONS The present results support the potential of CAB using a GnRH agonist and bicalutamide as a more effective treatment for advanced HSPC than GnRH antagonist monotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Efficacy of necitumumab [recombinant human monoclonal antibody that blocks the ligand binding epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)] in patients with squamous (SQ) non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has been confirmed in two randomized clinical trials (SQUIRE and JFCM). This study evaluated the association between efficacy and initial skin toxicity with necitumumab treatment by analyzing pooled data from two clinical trials (SQUIRE and JFCM). MATERIALS AND METHODS Data of 635 patients with SQ-NSCLC (intent-to-treat population) treated with necitumumab plus gemcitabine and cisplatin (N + GC) were pooled from two clinical trials (SQUIRE and JFCM). The relationship between skin toxicities developed by the end of the second cycle and efficacy was evaluated. Efficacy endpoints included overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and objective response rate (ORR). Univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out for these endpoints. RESULTS OS and ORR were associated with skin toxicity, whereas PFS was not. Patients with grade ≥2 or grade 1 skin toxicity had significantly longer OS compared to patients without skin toxicity (grade 0) in the N + GC group [median = 15.0 (grade ≥2); 12.7 (grade 1); 9.4 (grade 0) months; hazard ratio (HR) = 0.51 (grade ≥2 to grade 0); 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.40-0.64, P < 0.001 and HR = 0.64 (grade 1 to grade 0); 95% CI 0.52-0.80, P < 0.001]. In multivariate analysis, OS was significantly associated with skin toxicity. CONCLUSIONS A significant association was found between necitumumab-induced skin toxicity and efficacy. These results are consistent with the previously reported association between other EGFR inhibitors-induced skin toxicity and efficacy.

Abstract
Cardiac glycosides, known as inhibitors of Na+,K+-ATPase, have anti-cancer effects such as suppression of cancer cell proliferation and induction of cancer cell death. Here, we examined the signaling pathway elicited by cardiac glycosides in the human hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells and human epidermoid carcinoma KB cells. Three kinds of cardiac glycosides (ouabain, oleandrin, and digoxin) inhibited the cancer cell proliferation and decreased the expression level of thyroid adenoma-associated protein (THADA). Interestingly, the knockdown of THADA inhibited cancer cell proliferation, and the proliferation was significantly rescued by re-expression of THADA in the THADA-knockdown cells. In addition, the THADA-knockdown markedly decreased the expression level of L-type amino acid transporter LAT1. Cardiac glycosides also reduced the LAT1 expression. The LAT1 inhibitor, JPH203, significantly weakened the cancer cell proliferation. These results suggest that the binding of cardiac glycosides to Na+,K+-ATPase negatively regulates the THADA-LAT1 pathway, exerting the anti-proliferative effect in cancer cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Immune editing, in which human leukocyte antigens (HLA) have critical roles, has been suggested to shape the landscape of human cancer. This study prospectively investigated whether HLA gene zygosity is associated with the prognosis of primary androgen deprivation therapy in advanced prostate cancer. METHODS KYUCOG-1401-A was conducted in conjunction with a prospective clinical trial (KYUCOG-1401). Among the patients enrolled in KYUCOG-1401 and treated with primary androgen deprivation therapy, only Japanese patients were included. HLA genotypes of HLA-A, B, C, DRB1, DQB1, and DPB1 were determined. The effect of divergence of HLA genotypes on time to progression, prostate cancer-specific survival, and overall survival was evaluated. RESULTS Among 127 patients, homozygosity for HLA-DRB1 (HR, 95% CI; 4.05, 1.54-10.7, P = 0.0047) and HLA-DQB1 (HR, 95% CI; 3.75, 1.47-9.58, P = 0.0058) was associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer-specific mortality. Patients with higher HLA evolutionary divergence scores at HLA-DQB1 (HR, 95% CI; 0.90, 0.82-0.97, P = 0.0093) had lower risks of prostate cancer-specific mortality. Androgen-responsive gene sets were upregulated in CD4low and CD8low tumors in the prostate cancer cohort, but not in the bladder and kidney cancer cohorts. CONCLUSIONS This study suggested that the diversity of HLA-II loci including HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 plays an important role in advanced prostate cancer survival, contributing to improved risk stratification in advanced prostate cancer. Moreover, it was shown that CD4+ T cells play an important role in androgen deprivation therapy, suggesting that immunotherapy targeting CD4+ T cells is promising for prostate cancer.

Abstract
Background: Olaparib and niraparib (poly adenosine diphosphate [ADP]-ribose polymerase [PARP] inhibitors) have significant antitumor action in patients with ovarian cancer. However, the incidence of nausea and vomiting among patients on these drugs in clinical trials is rather high. There are no guidelines on antiemetic treatment for nausea caused by oral anticancer agents. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of nausea and vomiting caused by PARP inhibitors and the actual situation of antiemetic therapy in patients with gynecologic cancer. Methods: Patients with gynecologic cancer who were scheduled to receive PARP inhibitors were enrolled. Data on PARP inhibitor-induced nausea and vomiting were collected from patient diaries for 21 days. The primary endpoint was the incidence of vomiting during the 21 days after starting olaparib and niraparib. Results: Overall, between January 2020 and March 2023, 134 patients were enrolled. Of the 129 patients who were evaluated, 28 (21.7%) received prophylactic antiemetics for 21 days, and 101 (78.3%) did not. The overall incidence of PARP inhibitor-induced vomiting was 16.3%. The incidence of vomiting in the group that did not receive antiemetic prophylaxis was 13.9%. On dividing the group that did not receive antiemetic prophylaxis into the olaparib and niraparib subgroups, the incidence of vomiting was found to be 18.6% for the olaparib group and 10.3% for the niraparib group. Conclusion: The incidence of emesis without antiemetic prophylaxis among patients on olaparib and niraparib ranged from 10% to 30%. Therefore, olaparib and niraparib can be classified in the low emetogenic risk and prophylactic antiemetic therapy at the time of treatment initiation may be unnecessary.

Abstract
The heavy fermion paramagnet UTe2 exhibits numerous characteristics of spin-triplet superconductivity. Efforts to understand the microscopic details of this exotic superconductivity have been impeded by uncertainty regarding the underlying electronic structure. Here we directly probe the Fermi surface of UTe2 by measuring magnetic quantum oscillations in pristine quality crystals. We find an angular profile of quantum oscillatory frequency and amplitude that is characteristic of a quasi-2D Fermi surface, which we find is well described by two cylindrical Fermi sheets of electron- and hole-type respectively. Additionally, we find that both cylindrical Fermi sheets possess considerable undulation but negligible small-scale corrugation, which may allow for their near-nesting and therefore promote magnetic fluctuations that enhance the triplet pairing mechanism. Importantly, we find no evidence for the presence of any 3D Fermi surface sections. Our results place strong constraints on the possible symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in UTe2.

Abstract
Skin disorders, including acne vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, and rosacea, are characterized by the presence of biofilms, which are communities of microorganisms. The mechanical stability of biofilms is attributed to one of their constituents-polysaccharides-which are secreted by microorganisms. Sophorolipids are biosurfactants with biofilm disruption and removal abilities and are expected to become alternatives for classical petrochemical-based surfactants in cosmetics. In this study, we investigated the influence of sophorolipids on β-glucan such as dispersion status, interaction mechanism, and configuration change as a model polysaccharide of biofilm in aqueous solution. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed that sophorolipids interfere with the aggregation of β- glucan in aqueous solutions. In contrast, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), which is used as a typical surfactant reference, promotes the aggregation of β-glucan. The interaction between sophorolipids and β-glucan were investigated using surface tension measurements and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Surface tension increased only near critical micelle concentration (CMC) region of sophorolipids in the presence of β-glucan. This suggests that the interaction occurred in the solution rather than at the air-liquid interface. Moreover, the results of ITC indicate that hydrophobic interactions were involved in this interaction. In addition, the results of optical rotation measurements indicate that sophorolipids did not unfold the triple helical structure of β-glucan. β-glucan dispersion was expected to be caused steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion when sophorolipids interacted with β-glucan via hydrophobic interactions owing to the unique molecular structure of sophorolipids attributed by a bulky sugar moiety and a carboxyl functional group. These results demonstrated unique performances of sophorolipids on β-glucan and provided more insights on the efficacy of sophorolipids as good anti-biofilms.

Abstract
Our measurements of ^{125}Te NMR relaxations reveal an enhancement of electronic spin fluctuations above μ_{0}H^{*}∼15 T, leading to their divergence in the vicinity of the metamagnetic transition at μ_{0}H_{m}≈35 T, below which field-reinforced superconductivity appears when a magnetic field (H) is applied along the crystallographic b axis. The NMR data evidence that these fluctuations are dominantly longitudinal, providing a key to understanding the peculiar superconducting phase diagram in H∥b, where such fluctuations enhance the pairing interactions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the associations between oral health status and short-term functional outcomes in hospitalized patients aged over 65 years with acute ischemic stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective observational analysis included older adult patients (age, ≥ 65 years) admitted for acute ischemic stroke. The oral health status at admission was evaluated using the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT). Patients were categorized into the normal oral health (OHAT score, 0-2) or poor oral health (OHAT score, ≥ 3) group. Stroke severity, Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS), and medical history were compared. Multivariate analysis was used to determine the association between the OHAT score and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at discharge, FOIS score at discharge, and length of hospital stay. RESULTS The study comprised 129 patients (mean age: 78.8 ± 7.7 years). The poor oral health group (n = 22) had a higher stroke severity and lower FOIS scores than the normal oral health group (n = 107). The poor oral health group exhibited significantly higher rates of moderate to severe disability at discharge (odds ratio = 9.18, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.74-48.30, P = 0.009), lower FOIS scores at discharge (β = -0.96, 95% CI: -1.71 to -0.20, P = 0.014), and longer hospital stays (β = 10.70, 95% CI: 0.80-20.61, P = 0.034) than the other group. CONCLUSION In older patients with acute ischemic stroke, poor oral health status at admission was associated with worse short-term functional outcomes, including increased disability, dysphagia, and longer hospital stay. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Assessing and addressing the oral health status of this population can potentially improve short-term functional outcomes and enhance comprehensive stroke care.

Abstract
α-Form hydrated crystals form a lamellar gel in which the alkyl chains of the amphiphilic molecules are hexagonally arranged within bilayers below the gel-liquid crystal phase transition temperature. In practice, the lamellar gel network with excess water is called an "α-gel", particularly in the cosmetics industry. In this study, the hydration or water sorption of amphiphilic materials in water vapor was assessed using a humidity-controlled quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) technique. The amphiphilic materials used in this study were hexadecyl phosphate salts neutralized with L-arginine (C16P-Arg), CsOH (C16P-Cs), KOH (C16P-K), and NaOH (C16P-Na). Small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements revealed that C16P-Arg and C16P-Cs yielded α-form hydrated crystals. Humidity-controlled QCM-D measurements demonstrated that C16P-Arg and C16P-Cs more readily underwent hydration or water sorption than C16P-K and C16P-Na. The key conclusion is that the significant hydration ability of C16P-Arg and C16P-Cs promotes the formation of the corresponding α-form hydrated crystals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Current prognostic models for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) are likely inaccurate due to recent treatment advances and improved survival outcomes. The JEWEL study used a data set from patients who received tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) to explore the prognostic impact of the tumor immune environment in the absence of immune checkpoint inhibitor intervention. METHODS The primary analysis population comprised 569 of the 770 Japanese patients enrolled in the ARCHERY study who received first-line TKIs. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were used to identify factors associated with the primary (overall survival [OS]) and secondary outcomes (treatment duration) using 34 candidate explanatory variables. RESULTS Median OS was 34.1 months (95% CI, 30.4-37.6) in the primary analysis population. A considerable negative prognostic impact (descriptive p ≤ 0.0005) on OS was seen with lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) >1.5 × upper limit of normal (adjusted HR [aHR], 3.30; 95% CI, 2.19-4.98), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) ≥2 (aHR, 2.14; 95% CI, 1.56-2.94), World Health Organization (WHO)/International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) Grade 4 (aHR, 1.89; 95% CI, 1.43-2.51), C-reactive protein (CRP) level ≥0.3 (aHR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.40-2.26), and age ≥75 years (aHR, 1.65; 95% CI, 1.24-2.18) in the multivariable analysis. PD-L1 and immunophenotype affected OS in univariable analyses but were not selected in the multivariable model as explanatory variables. CONCLUSIONS JEWEL identified sex, age, ECOG PS, liver and bone metastases, CRP levels, WHO/ISUP grade, LDH, and albumin levels as key prognostic factors for OS after first-line TKI therapy for mRCC.

Abstract
Organic photoresist coatings, primarily composed of resins, are commonly used in the electronics industry to protect inorganic underlayers. Conventional photoresist strippers, such as amine-type agents, have shown high removal performance but led to environmental impact and substrate corrosiveness. Therefore, this trade-off must be addressed. In this study, we characterized the removal mechanism of a photoresist film using a nonionic triblock Pluronic surfactant [poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide)] in a ternary mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), and water. In particular, the removal dynamics determined by using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring was compared with those determined by performing confocal laser scanning microscopy and visual observation to analyze the morphology, adsorption mass, and viscoelasticity of the photoresist film. In the absence of the Pluronic surfactant, the photoresist film in the ternary solvent exhibited a three-step process: (i) film swelling caused by the penetration of a good solvent (EC and PC), (ii) formation of photoresist particles through dewetting, and (iii) particle aggregation on the substrate. This result was correlated to the Hansen solubility parameters. The addition of the Pluronic surfactant not only prevented photoresist aggregation in the third step but also promoted desorption from the substrate. This effect was dependent on the concentration of the Pluronic surfactant, which influenced diffusion to the interface between the photoresist and the bulk solution. Finally, we proposed a novel photoresist stripping mechanism based on the synergy between dewetting driven by an EC/PC-to-water mixture and adsorption by the Pluronic surfactant.

Abstract
Cisplatin should be administered with diuretics and Magnesium supplementation under adequate hydration to avoid renal impairment. Patients should be evaluated for eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) during the treatment with pemetrexed, as kidney injury has been reported. Pemetrexed should be administered with caution in patients with a CCr (creatinine clearance) < 45 mL/min. Mesna is used to prevent hemorrhagic cystitis in patients receiving ifosfamide. Febuxostat is effective in avoiding hyperuricemia induced by TLS (tumor lysis syndrome). Preventative rasburicase is recommended in high-risk cases of TLS. Thrombotic microangiopathy could be triggered by anticancer drugs and there is no evidence of efficacy of plasma exchange therapy. When proteinuria occurs during treatment with anti-angiogenic agents or multi-kinase inhibitors, dose reductions or interruptions based on grading should be considered. Grade 3 proteinuria and renal dysfunction require urgent intervention, including drug interruption or withdrawal, and referral to a nephrologist should be considered. The first-line drugs used for blood pressure elevation due to anti-angiogenic agents are ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors and ARBs (angiotensin receptor blockers). The protein binding of drugs and their pharmacokinetics are considerably altered in patients with hypoalbuminemia. The clearance of rituximab is increased in patients with proteinuria, and the correlation with urinary IgG suggests similar pharmacokinetic changes when using other antibody drugs. AIN (acute interstitial nephritis) is the most common cause of ICI (immune checkpoint inhibitor)-related kidney injury that is often treated with steroids. The need for renal biopsy in patients with kidney injury that occurs during treatment with ICI remains controversial.

Abstract
Photoresponsive materials are garnering attention because of their applications toward building a sustainable society. A recently developed fast-photoresponsive amphiphilic lophine dimer (3TEG-LPD) responds rapidly to light, making it a promising candidate for drug-delivery systems. In this study, the mechanism of structural changes induced by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation in 3TEG-LPD micelles in an aqueous solution was investigated via an in situ time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) technique. Since subsecond resolution was necessary to observe the structural changes in the 3TEG-LPD micelles, stroboscopic SANS analysis was employed to obtain scattering profiles with a time width of 0.5 s. The structural parameters were quantitatively determined by performing a model-fitting analysis of the SANS results. The stroboscopic SANS results showed that upon UV irradiation, the axial ratio and pseudo-aggregation number of the 3TEG-LPD micelles increased by 1.8 and 1.6 times, respectively, whereas the number of water molecules per surfactant molecule decreased. This finding suggested that the change in the shape of the micelles from spherical to ellipsoidal shape was accompanied by dehydration. Under the present UV irradiation conditions, this structural change of the micelle occurred rapidly during the first 30 s after the start of UV irradiation. Each structural parameter recovered exponentially and reversibly during the recovery process after the cessation of UV irradiation. The changes in these parameters were analyzed in terms of kinetics by comparing them with the changes in the molecular structure. We found that the change of the micelles proceeds approximately twice as fast as the association of the molecule. Furthermore, from the perspective of the critical packing parameter consideration, the SANS analysis revealed that the UV-induced changes in 3TEG-LPD micelles are dominated by the enthalpy contribution. This finding is expected to be useful for developing new materials for various applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To understand the real-world outcomes for patients with penile cancer in the Kyushu-Okinawa area before the introduction of practice guidelines in Japan. METHODS We retrospectively collected medical information on patients with penile squamous cell carcinoma and penile intraepithelial neoplasia at 12 university hospitals and their affiliated hospitals in the Kyushu-Okinawa area from January 2009 to December 2020. Patients with unknown clinical stage were excluded. Patient background characteristics and survival, as well as pretreatment factors involved in survival, were investigated. RESULTS A total of 196 patients were included. Patients with clinical stage 0, I, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB and IV comprised 9.7, 26.0, 22.4, 2.6, 10.7, 14.3 and 14.3%, respectively. The median follow-up was 26 months, and the mean 5-year overall survival and cancer-specific survival rates were 74.3 and 79.8%, respectively. On univariate analysis, tumor diameter ≥ 30 mm, penile shaft tumor, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status ≥ 1, cT ≥ 3, cN ≥ 2 and cM1 were associated with significantly poorer cancer-specific survival. On multivariate analysis, pretreatment factors of cN ≥ 2 (hazard ratio, 32.5; 95% confidence interval, 5.08-208; P = 0.0002), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status ≥ 1 (4.42; 1.79-10.9; P = 0.0012) and cT ≥ 3 (3.34; 1.11-10.1; P = 0.0319) were identified as independent prognostic factors. CONCLUSIONS The study revealed basic data for future penile cancer treatment and research, including survival rates according to clinical stages, and identified cN ≥ 2, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status ≥ 1 and cT ≥ 3 at initial diagnosis as independent prognostic factors. Evidence for penile cancer in Japan is particularly scarce, and future large-scale prospective studies are warranted.

Abstract
A 36-year-old woman diagnosed with Silver-Russell syndrome during childhood presented to our department after a primary care physician suspected renal dysfunction. At birth, she had an extremely low weight (1210 g), and in childhood, she was diagnosed with Silver-Russell syndrome. At the age of 14 she was found to have proteinuria; however, the condition was never further examined. One month prior to her presentation to our department, the following were noted: 3+ urinary protein, 3.9 urinary protein/creatinine ratio, and 48 mL/min/1.73 m2 estimated glomerular filtration rate. Abdominal computed tomography revealed small kidneys difficult to visualize using ultrasound. Therefore, an open renal biopsy was performed. The renal biopsy revealed no significant findings in the glomerulus except glomerular hypertrophy, and the glomerular density in the cortical area was low (0.6/mm2). The patient was diagnosed with oligomeganephronia. Proteinuria and renal dysfunction were likely due to glomerular hyperfiltration resulting from a low nephron count caused by low birth weight. Silver-Russell syndrome is characterized by intrauterine growth retardation and additional developmental disorders after birth. Here, we detected oligomeganephronia following kidney biopsy in a patient with Silver-Russell syndrome. We suspect that a reduced number of nephrons due to low birth weight caused proteinuria and renal dysfunction.

Abstract
Photoresist stripping is the final step in the photolithography process that forms fine patterns for electronic devices. Recently, a mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC) has attracted attention as a new stripper based on its eco-friendliness and anti-corrosiveness. However, the EC/PC mixture causes re-adsorption of the photoresist during a process of subsequent water rinsing. In this study, we characterized the adsorption/desorption of the photoresist and a triblock Pluronic surfactant [poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide)] as a blocking agent on an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate. In addition, we evaluated the dispersion of photoresist particles. The photoresist polymer formed a thin and rigid adsorption layer on an ITO substrate in the EC/PC mixture. When water was injected into the EC/PC mixture and the photoresist solutions, the photoresist polymer aggregated and was then deposited on the substrate. In contrast, the addition of Pluronic surfactant F-68 (PEO79PPO30PEO79) into the EC/PC mixture remarkably decreased the residual amount of the photoresist on the ITO after water injection. This variation was attributed to the PEO blocks of F-68 extended to the solution phase, whereas the PPO blocks of F-68 functioned as anchors for adsorption onto the photoresist. Therefore, the F-68-adsorbed layer prevented interaction between the photoresist particles or the photoresist and the ITO surface, which provides potential for future applications as new stripping agents with high removal performance.

Abstract
The superconducting (SC) phase diagram in uranium ditelluride is explored under magnetic fields (H) along the hard magnetic b axis using a high-quality single crystal with T_{c}=2.1 K. Simultaneous electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements discern low- and high-field SC (LFSC and HFSC, respectively) phases with contrasting field-angular dependence. Crystal quality increases the upper critical field of the LFSC phase, but the H^{*} of ∼15 T, at which the HFSC phase appears, is always the same through the various crystals. A phase boundary signature is also observed inside the LFSC phase near H^{*}, indicating an intermediate SC phase characterized by small flux pinning forces.

Abstract
Biological systems precisely and selectively control ion binding through various chemical reactions, molecular recognition, and transport by virtue of effective molecular interactions with biological membranes and proteins. Because ion binding is inhibited in highly polar media, recognition systems for anions in aqueous media, which are relevant to biological and environmental systems, are still limited. In this study, we explored the anion binding of Langmuir monolayers formed by amphiphilic naphthalenediimide (NDI) derivatives with a series of substituents at air/water interfaces via anion-π interactions. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations revealed that the binding of anions originating from anion-π interactions is related to the electron density of the anions. At the air/water interfaces, amphiphilic NDI derivatives formed Langmuir monolayers, and the addition of anions caused expansion of the Langmuir monolayers. The anions with larger hydration energies related to electron density showed larger binding constants (Ka) for 1:1 stoichiometry with the NDI derivatives. The loosely packed monolayer formed by the amphiphilic NDI derivatives with bromine groups showed a better anion response. In contrast, the binding of NO3- was significantly enhanced in the highly packed monolayer. These results indicate that the packing of NDI derivatives with rigid aromatic rings influenced the binding of the anions. These results provide insight into ion binding using the air/water interface as a promising recognition site for mimicking biological membranes. In future, sensing devices can be developed using Langmuir-Blodgett films on electrodes. Furthermore, the capture of anions on electron-deficient aromatic compounds can lead to doping or composition technologies for n-type semiconductors.

Abstract
Mutations in the human ATP13A2 (PARK9), a lysosomal ATPase, cause Kufor-Rakeb Syndrome, an early-onset form of Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, we demonstrate that ATP13A2 functions as a lysosomal H+,K+-ATPase. The K+-dependent ATPase activity and the lysosomal K+-transport activity of ATP13A2 are inhibited by an inhibitor of sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase, thapsigargin, and K+-competitive inhibitors of gastric H+,K+-ATPase, such as vonoprazan and SCH28080. Interestingly, these H+,K+-ATPase inhibitors cause lysosomal alkalinization and α-synuclein accumulation, which are pathological hallmarks of PD. Furthermore, PD-associated mutants of ATP13A2 show abnormal expression and function. Our results suggest that the H+/K+-transporting function of ATP13A2 contributes to acidification and α-synuclein degradation in lysosomes.

Abstract
Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) has been widely used for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. However, prognosis and adverse events vary among patients. This study aimed to identify genetic markers able to predict the outcome of ADT. Japanese patients treated with primary ADT for advanced prostate cancer in the KYUCOG-1401 trial were enrolled as a development set. A distinct population of advanced prostate cancer cases treated with ADT was included as a validation set. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with radiographic progression-free survival (PFS) at 1 year and adverse events including de novo diabetes mellitus, arthralgia, and de novo dyslipidemia were identified in the development set by a genome-wide association study (GWAS). The SNPs associated with radiographic PFS in the development study were then genotyped in the validation set. GWAS followed by validation identified SNPs (rs76237622 in PRR27 and rs117573572 in MTAP) that were associated with overall survival in ADT. A genetic prognostic model using these SNPs showed excellent predictive efficacy for PFS and overall survival in ADT. In addition, GWAS showed that several SNPs were associated with de novo diabetes mellitus, arthralgia, and de novo dyslipidemia in ADT. This study identified novel multiple SNPs that correlated with outcomes in ADT. Future studies on correlations affecting the therapeutic efficacy of ADT-based combination therapies would make a valuable contribution to the development of personalized medicine.

Abstract
Bitterness is an important physiological function in the defense responses to avoid toxic foods. The taste receptor 2 family is well known to mediate bitter taste perception in Type II taste cells. Here, we report that the polycystic kidney disease 2-like 1 (PKD2L1) channel is a novel sensor for the bitter aftertaste in Type III taste cells. The PKD2L1 channel showed rebound activation after the washout of quinine, a bitter tastant, in electrophysiological whole-cell recordings of the PKD2L1-expressing HEK293T cells and Ca2+-imaging analysis of Type III taste cells isolated from wild-type PKD2L1 mice. In the short-term two-bottle preference and lick tests in vivo, the wild-type mice avoided normal water while the PKD2L1-knockout mice preferred normal water after they ingested the quinine-containing water. These results may explain the new mechanism of the quinine-triggered bitter aftertaste perception in Type III taste cells.

Abstract
Otopetrins (Otop1-Otop3) belong to a newly identified family of proton (H+) channels activated by extracellular acidification. Here, we found that Zn2+ activates the mouse Otop3 (mOtop3) proton channels by using electrophysiological patch-clamp techniques. In mOtop3-expressing human embryonic kidney HEK293T cells, a biphasic inward mOtop3 H+ current comprising a fast transient current followed by a sustained current was observed upon extracellular acidification at pH 5.0. No significant activation of the mOtop3 channel was observed at pH 6.5 and 7.4, but interestingly, Zn2+ dose-dependently induced a sustained activation of mOtop3 under these pH conditions. Increasing the Zn2+ concentration had no effect on the reversal potential of the channel currents, suggesting that Zn2+ does not permeate through the mOtop3. The activation of the mOtop3 channel was specific to Zn2+ among divalent metal cations. Our findings reveal a novel modulatory mechanism of mOtop3 proton channels by Zn2+.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is classified into several disease groups. Among them, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) has higher incidence and poor prognosis; therefore, it is important to characterize specific IPF symptoms. Exercise desaturation is a strong factor related to mortality in patients with ILD. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare the degree of oxygen desaturation between IPF and other ILD (non-IPF ILD) patients during exercise, using the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). METHODS This retrospective study included 126 stable patients with ILD who underwent 6MWT in our outpatient department. The 6MWT was used to assess desaturation during exercise, 6-minute walk distance (6MWD), and dyspnea at the end of exercise. In addition, patient characteristics and pulmonary function test results were recorded. RESULTS Study subjects were divided into 51 IPF patients and 75 non-IPF ILD patients. The IPF group had significantly lower nadir oxygen saturation determined by pulse oximetry (SpO2) during 6MWT than the non-IPF ILD group (IPF, 86.5 ± 4.6%; non-IPF ILD, 88.7 ± 5.3%; p = 0.02). The significant association between the nadir SpO2 and IPF or non-IPF ILD grouping remained even after adjusting for gender, age, body mass index, lung function, 6MWD, and dyspnea (β = -1.62; p <0.05). CONCLUSION Even after adjusting for confounding factors, IPF patients had lower nadir SpO2 during 6MWT. Early assessment of exercise desaturation using the 6MWT may be more important in patients with IPF compared with patients with other ILDs.

Abstract
A 75-year-old male patient underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early gastric cancer. The ESD ulcer bleeding occurred 7 days post-ESD, and he underwent endoscopic clipping hemostasis. Afterward, the patient presented with acute cholecystitis and cholangitis, thereby developing sclerosing cholangitis. His hepatic failure worsened and he died 15 months post-ESD although we performed endoscopic dilations for bile duct stenosis and administered antibiotics. We considered the condition to be related to secondary sclerosing cholangitis in critically ill patients (SSC-CIP) caused by bile duct ischemia and cholangitis.

Abstract
With the increasing importance of light-responsive materials, it is vital to analyze the relationship between function and structural changes induced by light irradiation. Small-angle scattering (SAS) is effective for such structural analysis. However, quantitatively capturing local molecular structure formation and molecular reactions at a scale of less than 1 nm via SAS is difficult. In this study, to analyze the structure of non-equilibrium phenomena in light-responsive materials, a new sample environment has been developed for a time-of-flight small- and wide-angle neutron scattering instrument (TAIKAN), comprising a UV–Vis irradiation system, UV–Vis absorption measurement equipment and photodetector. Simultaneous measurement of small-angle neutron scattering and UV–Vis absorption was achieved. This system was used to demonstrate the in situ observation of UV–Vis irradiation-induced structural change of micelles formed by 4-butylazobenzene-4′-(oxyethyl)trimethylammonium bromide, which is a light-responsive surfactant, in an aqueous solution. The results showed that the present measuring system provides direct information on the interplay between changes in micelle structure and changes in molecular configuration.

Abstract
Vesicles (liposomes and niosomes) are bilayer membranous capsules composed of amphiphilic molecules having aqueous phase in their interior and can encapsulate drug ingredients to act as drug delivery systems, a bio-membrane model, and so on. Vesicles also find their applications in cosmetics and foods industries since they can not only entrap water-soluble substances in their core, but also solubilize oily substances in the bilayer membrane. Almost half a century has passed since the discovery of vesicles by Bangham, and research on their basic properties and applications has been gaining momentum once again. In this article, the preparation and properties of vesicles (liposomes, niosomes) with excellent dispersion stability, especially formed in mixtures of amphiphilic molecules, are reported. Furthermore, the preparation of nano-sized silica hollow particles using vesicles as a structure-directing agent and their application to anti-reflection film are also described.

Abstract
Emulsification is an important technology in the field of cosmetics and household products. Emulsions are in non-equilibrium state; therefore, the products vary depending on the preparation process, and their state changes with time. Furthermore, it is known empirically that different types of oils have different emulsification properties (preparation and stability). For these reasons, the variables in emulsification research are numerous and complicated to analyze. As a result, many industrial applications have had to rely on empirical rules. In this study, emulsions with a lamellar liquid crystalline phase as an adsorption layer at the emulsion interface were investigated. The characteristics of O/W emulsions formed with the excess solvent phases (aqueous and oil phases) separated from the lamellar liquid crystalline phase were investigated based on the phase equilibrium of the ternary system.As a result, it was found that by agitating the aqueous phase containing dispersed vesicles of emulsifier (polyether modified silicone) together with the oil phase, an emulsion with a uniform interfacial membrane of lamellar liquid crystalline phase could be obtained. The emulsions prepared by this method were found to have good stability against coalescence. The process of transformation from vesicles to the uniform liquid crystal interfacial membrane during the emulsification process was clarified by a freeze-fracture transmission electron micrograph and the calculation of interfacial membrane thickness based on precise particle size analysis. Furthermore, the emulsification properties of polyether-modified silicones were clarified using polar oils and silicone oils, which are a combination of high/low and low/high compatibility with hydrophilic (polyethylene glycol) and lipophilic (polydimethylsiloxane) groups of polyether modified silicone, respectively. It is expected that this research will lead to the evolution of various functionalities in products in the fields of cosmetics, household products, food, pharmaceuticals, paint and others.

Abstract
The adsorption and lubrication of an amino acid-based surfactant at the solid/liquid interface were studied in the presence of calcium ions. The surfactant used here was disodium N-dodecanoylglutamate (C12Glu-2Na). The solid surface used in this study was hydrophobically modified to mimic the hydrophobicity of the skin surface. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) measurements revealed that the anionic surfactant was adsorbed on the hydrophobically modified solid surface. The replacement of the surfactant solution with CaCl2 aqueous solution resulted in the desorption of the surfactant to some extent; however, a rigid and elastic adsorption film interacting with calcium ions remained on the solid surface. The adsorption film containing calcium ions lowered the kinetic friction coefficient in aqueous media. The insoluble calcium salt of the surfactant, dispersed in the solution phase, also contributed to lubrication. We expect that the usability of personal care products formulated using amino acid-based surfactants is relevant to such adsorption and lubrication properties.

Abstract
Na+,K+-ATPases are essential for maintaining the membrane potential in almost all cells, and their catalytic subunits have four isoforms (α1-α4). Volume-regulated anion channel (VRAC) plays an important role in the cell death signaling pathway in addition to its fundamental role in cell volume maintenance. First, we introduce that disruption of actin filaments cause the dysfunction of VRAC, which elicits resistance to cisplatin in the cancer cells. Next, we summarize the cardiac glycosides-induced signaling pathway mediated by the crosstalk between Na+,K+-ATPase α1-isoform (α1NaK) and VRAC in the membrane microdomain of the cancer cells. In this mechanism, sub-micromolar concentrations of cardiac glycosides bind to the receptor-type α1NaK, and generate VRAC activities concomitantly with a deceleration of cancer cell proliferation. Finally, we summarize the pathophysiological function of α3NaK, which is abnormally expressed in the intracellular vesicles of cancer cells. The cancer cell can survive even under loss of anchorage because they have the avoidance mechanism for anoikis. On cancer cell detachment, we found that intracellular α3NaK is translocated to the plasma membrane and this event contributes to the survival of the cells. Interestingly, cardiac glycosides inhibited the α3NaK translocation and cell survival. Our findings may open up new opportunities for the development of cancer medicines.

Abstract
Inhaled aerosols are absorbed across the oral cavity, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract. The absorption across the oral cavity, which is one of the exposure routes, plays an important role in understanding pharmacokinetics and physiological effects. After aerosol exposure from e-cigarettes, tissue viability studies, morphological observation, and chemical analyses at the inner and outer buccal tissues were performed using organotypic 3D in vitro culture models of the buccal epithelium to better understand the deposition and absorption on the inner and outer buccal tissues. The aerosol exposures did not affect the tissue viability and had no change to the tissue morphology and structure. The deposition ratio at the buccal tissue surface is relatively low. This shows that majority of aerosol transfers to the airway tissues. The distribution from the inner tissue to the outer tissue has selectivity among various compounds, depending on the affinity with the liquid crystal structure of phospholipids and glucosylceramide. Although nicotine absorption in the aqueous solution was well known to increase as the unprotonated state of nicotine increased, the nicotine absorption after the aerosol exposure is irrelevant to the protonated-unprotonated state. Furthermore, the results showed that half of nicotine that adhered to the oral cavity transferred to the inner tissue via the oral epithelium and the other half transferred to the gastrointestinal tract accompanying multiple executions of swallowing, while majority of the water-soluble compounds with the hydroxyl group such as propylene glycol and benzoic acid that adhered to the oral cavity were eluted with the saliva and transferred to the gastrointestinal tract by swallowing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The phase 3 CLEAR study demonstrated statistically significantly improved efficacy with lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab versus sunitinib, including progression-free survival and overall survival, in patients with previously untreated advanced renal cell carcinoma. This subset analysis investigated efficacy and safety in Japanese patients randomized to lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab or sunitinib in the CLEAR study. METHODS Progression-free survival, overall survival, tumor response, and safety were assessed in Japanese patients with previously untreated advanced renal cell carcinoma randomized to receive lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab (n = 42) or sunitinib (n = 31). Efficacy outcomes were analyzed by independent imaging review per Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors, version 1.1. RESULTS Progression-free survival was longer with lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab than with sunitinib (median, 22.1 vs. 10.9 months; hazard ratio, 0.39; 95% CI, 0.20-0.74). Median overall survival was not estimable in the lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab arm and 30.6 months in the sunitinib arm (HR, 1.20; 95% CI, 0.39-3.66). Overall survival adjusted for the imbalance of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center prognostic risk group favored lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab (hazard ratio, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.18-2.39). Objective response rate (69.0% vs. 45.2%; odds ratio, 2.71; 95% CI, 1.03-7.10) was higher and median duration of response (20.3 vs. 9.1 months) was longer with lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab versus sunitinib. Grade ≥ 3 treatment-emergent adverse events occurred in 95.2% versus 87.1% of patients in the lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab versus sunitinib arms. CONCLUSIONS These findings support lenvatinib plus pembrolizumab as a potential first-line treatment for Japanese patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND If complete obliteration of ruptured pediatric arteriovenous malformation (AVM) cannot be achieved, the appropriate follow-up duration and predictors of rebleeding remain unknown. OBSERVATIONS Pediatric patients with ruptured AVMs admitted to the authors' hospital within the past 30 years were evaluated. Rebleeding was confirmed in two patients. The first patient was a 5-year-old boy who experienced right thalamic hemorrhage. AVM was found in the bilateral thalamus and treated with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). New aneurysm formation and residual AVM regrowth were confirmed 21 years after the SRS. Eight months later, rebleeding occurred. The second patient was a 5-year-old boy who underwent removal of a left cerebellar hemorrhage and AVM. The residual AVM was treated with SRS. Residual AVM regrowth was detected at 6 years 7 months after SRS. Five months later, new aneurysm formation was confirmed. Two additional days later, rebleeding occurred. LESSONS New aneurysm formation and residual AVM regrowth may predict rebleeding and can occur >20 years after the initial rupture and treatment. If AVM obliteration is not achieved, long-term follow-up is needed, even in adulthood, with attention to new aneurysm formation and residual AVM regrowth. Further treatment is recommended if these findings are confirmed.

Abstract
An air-water interface enables molecular assemblies and conformations to be controlled according to their intrinsic interactions and anisotropic stimuli. The chirality and conformation of binaphthyl derivatives have been controlled by tuning molecular aggregated states in solution. In this study, we have tuned molecular aggregated states of monobinaphthyldurene (MBD) by applying different mechanical stimuli to control the conformation at the air-water interface. Density functional theory calculations indicate that MBD exists essentially in two conformations, namely, 1-MBD (most stable) and 2-MBD (less stable). MBD was mechanically dissolved in appropriate lipid matrices using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method, while pure MBD was self-assembled at the dynamic air-water interface in the absence of or by applying vortex motions (vortex LB method). In MBD mixed monolayer, surface pressure-molecular area measurements and atomic force microscopy observations suggest that separate lipids and MBD phases transform to mixed phases induced by the dissolution of MBD into the lipid matrices during mechanical compression at the air-water interface. Circular dichroism measurements indicate that molecular conformation changes from 1-MBD to 2-MBD in passing from a separated phase to a mixed MBD/lipid phase. In addition, the molecular aggregated states and conformations of MBD depend on the spreading volume and vortex flow rate when applying the vortex LB method. Molecular conformations and aggregated states of MBD could be controlled continuously by applying a mechanical stimulus at the air-water interface.

Abstract
Oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions containing ethanol have been used in food, cosmetics, paints, and other applications. However, O/W emulsions with long-term stability are difficult to produce at high ethanol concentrations because the adsorption of the emulsifier at the O/W interface is restricted by ethanol. In this study, to resolve this issue, we prepared ethanol-containing O/W emulsions with high dispersion stability using a series of polyglycerol monofatty acid esters (PGFEs) with different fatty acid chain lengths, which are bio-safe nonionic surfactants, as emulsifiers. First, aqueous PGFE solutions containing 0-50 wt% ethanol were prepared and then O/W emulsions were formed using limonene as the oil phase. When decaglycerol stearic acid ester (DGMS, C18) was used as the emulsifier, an O/W emulsion with fine droplets (~30 nm in size) was successfully obtained at an ethanol concentration of 35 wt%. This emulsion remained stable for more than four weeks, during which no phase separation occurred, indicating its high dispersion stability. Furthermore, aqueous DGMS solutions containing 30-40 wt% ethanol were viscous, and a lamellar liquid crystal phase was observed to be dispersed in these solutions. The formation of this lamellar liquid crystal phase at the O/W interface led to an interfacial film with superior viscoelastic properties. The results suggested that the stability of the emulsions was determined by the balance between the decrease in interfacial tension caused by the addition of ethanol and the density (rigidity) of the DGMS film formed at the O/W interface. Finally, to further improve the dispersion stability of the ethanol-containing O/W-type emulsions, O/W emulsions were prepared using a mixture of two PGFEs with different degrees of glycerol polymerization, that is, systems having different hydrophilic-lipophilic balance values.

Abstract
Glucose transporter GLUT1 plays a primary role in the glucose metabolism of cancer cells. Here, we found that cardiac glycosides (CGs) such as ouabain, oleandrin, and digoxin, which are Na+ ,K+ -ATPase inhibitors, decreased the GLUT1 expression in the plasma membrane of human cancer cells (liver cancer HepG2, colon cancer HT-29, gastric cancer MKN45, and oral cancer KB cells). The effective concentration of ouabain was lower than that for inhibiting the activity of Na+ ,K+ -ATPase α1-isoform (α1NaK) in the plasma membrane. The CGs also inhibited [3 H]2-deoxy- d-glucose uptake, lactate secretion, and proliferation of the cancer cells. In intracellular vesicles of human cancer cells, Na+ ,K+ -ATPase α3-isoform (α3NaK) is abnormally expressed. Here, a low concentration of ouabain inhibited the activity of α3NaK. Knockdown of α3NaK significantly inhibited the ouabain-decreased GLUT1 expression in HepG2 cells, while the α1NaK knockdown did not. Consistent with the results in human cancer cells, CGs had no effect on GLUT1 expression in rat liver cancer dRLh-84 cells where α3NaK was not endogenously expressed. Interestingly, CGs decreased GLUT expression in the dRLh-84 cells exogenously expressing α3NaK. In HepG2 cells, α3NaK was found to be colocalized with TPC1, a Ca2+ -releasing channel activated by nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP). The CGs-decreased GLUT1 expression was significantly inhibited by a Ca2+ chelator, a Ca2+ -ATPase inhibitor, and a NAADP antagonist. The GLUT1 decrease was also attenuated by inhibitors of dynamin and phosphatidylinositol-3 kinases (PI3Ks). In conclusion, the binding of CGs to intracellular α3NaK elicits the NAADP-mediated Ca2+ mobilization followed by the dynamin-dependent GLUT1 endocytosis in human cancer cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM WW and C2 domain-containing 1 (WWC1) protein is a suppressor of malignancies. However, there is no information on the pathological significance of WWC1 in upper urinary tract cancer (UTUC). PATIENTS AND METHODS In this study, WWC1 immunoreactivity was investigated in 152 non-metastatic UTUC samples. The relationships between WWC1 expression and grade, pT stage, proliferative index (using an antibody to Ki-67), and the immunohistochemical expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 were evaluated. RESULTS WWC1 expression was negatively associated with tumor grade and pT stage (p<0.001). Positive expression of WWC1 was a better predictor of the UTUC recurrence and subsequent metastasis, and the multivariate analysis showed that WWC1 expression was a significant predictor of subsequent metastasis (hazard ratio=0.29, p=0.020). WWC1 expression inversely correlated with the proliferative index (odds ratio=2.59, p=0.023) and expression of MMP9 (odds ratio=2.19, p=0.040) but not with MMP2 expression, by multivariate analyses. CONCLUSION WWC1 expression was negatively associated with malignant aggressiveness via the suppression of cancer cell proliferation and MMP9 expression in patients with UTUC. This suggests WWC1 to be a useful predictor and novel therapeutic target in patients with UTUC.

In addition, the association between the severity of cerebral hemorrhaging and the long-term prognosis in these patients has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the subsequent prognosis of hemodialysis patients who survived the acute phase of intracerebral hemorrhaging. Methods We included hemodialysis patients who were admitted to Nagasaki University Hospital between 2007 and 2015 for intracerebral hemorrhaging treatment. After excluding cases of in-hospital death, survivors were classified using the 5-point modified Rankin Scale (mRS), which specifically measures the ADL in patients with cerebrovascular diseases. The patients were followed up at the medical facilities to which they were transferred in the same medical zone until 2017. Results Out of 91 patients with cerebral hemorrhaging (65±11 years old, 66% men, hemodialysis duration 108±91 months), 62 survived until discharge. Twenty-one patients died during observation, largely due to infectious diseases, such as sepsis and pneumonia (n=16, 76%). Compared to patients with mRS 0-4 (n=31), those with mRS 5 (n=31) showed a significantly poorer prognosis. The hazard ratio adjusted for age and antiplatelets was 13.7 (95% confidence interval: 3.88-63.7, p<0.001). Conclusion Hemodialysis patients with intracerebral hemorrhaging who were bedridden showed poor outcomes. The major causes of death were infections. Therefore, these patients should be carefully monitored for infections in order to improve their prognosis.

Abstract
Biofilms are communities of microorganisms that have been widely studied because they can cause hospital-acquired infections and skin disorders. Polysaccharides secreted by microorganisms are constituents of biofilms, contributing to their adhesion and mechanical stability. Sophorolipids are biosurfactants with the ability to disrupt and remove biofilms. Biosurfactants have been targeted as potential substitutes for classical petrochemical-based surfactants in cosmetics. In this study, we fabricate a β-glucan film as a model biofilm, and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) measurements are used to assess the biofilm removal. The viscoelasticity of the β-glucan films is monitored while sophorolipid solutions are introduced into the system, and we found that the film removal performance increases with the sophorolipid concentration. In addition, Δf (change in frequency)-ΔD (change in energy dissipation) plot analyses reveal that two processes are involved in the removal mechanism. The first process involves the adsorption of water (hydration) on the β-glucan film. The second process involves the removal of the β-glucan film from the sensor surface. Furthermore, it is suggested that sophorolipids interfere with the hydration of the β-glucan film and suppress increases in its viscosity. This is expected to be an essential factor for the removal of the β-glucan film. Sophorolipids, therefore, show potential for use in cosmetics as an eco-friendly agent for biofilm removal.
