Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis of the Flavor Production Mechanism in Yogurt by Traditional Starter Strains

Synergistic fermentation of milk by Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus is one of the key factors that determines the quality of yogurt. In this study, the mechanism whereby yogurt flavor compounds are produced by mixture of S. thermophilus SIT-20.S and L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus SIT-17.B were investigated by examining these strains' flavor production, growth, and gene transcription. The results showed that yogurt produced by a 10:1 mixture of the aforementioned strains had the highest abundance of acetoin, whereas yogurt produced by a 1:1 mixture had the highest abundance of diacetyl and acetaldehyde. In addition, the growth of S. thermophilus SIT-20.S was enhanced in the 10:1 mixture. Transcriptomic analysis revealed differentially expressed genes in the flavor-compound-related pathways of S. thermophilus SIT-20.S and L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus SIT-17.B in yogurts produced by 10:1 and 1:1 mixture compared with those produced by either strain alone. Mixed fermentations regulated the expression of genes related to glycolysis, resulting in an increase of pyruvate, which is an important precursor for diacetyl and acetoin synthesis. The gene encoding the acetoin reductase (SIT-20S_orf01454) was decreased in S. thermophilus SIT-20.S, which ensured the accumulation of acetoin. Besides, gene encoding the acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (SIT-20S_orf00949) was upregulated in S. thermophilus SIT-20.S, and the expression of alcohol dehydrogenase (SIT-20S_orf01479; SIT-17B_orf00943) was downregulated in both strains, maintaining the abundance of acetaldehyde. In addition, the gene encoding the NADH oxidase (SIT-17B_orf00860) in L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus SIT-17.B were upregulated, which promoted the accumulation of diacetyl and acetoin. In conclusion, we characterized the mechanism by which S. thermophilus and L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus synergistically generated yogurt flavor compounds during their production of yogurt and highlighted the importance of appropriate proportions of fermentation starters for improving the flavor of yogurts.

[Epidemiological analysis of influenza during COVID-19 epidemic in Jiangsu Province from 2020 to 2022]

By analyzing the epidemic characteristics of influenza during the COVID-19 epidemic in Jiangsu Province from 2020 to 2022, it found that 90 721 influenza-like case samples were collected in Jiangsu Province from 2020 to 2022, of which 6 732 were nucleic acid-positive samples, with an average positive detection rate of 7.4% in three years. The annual positive detection rate presented a U-shaped distribution, with positive detection rates of 4.4%, 3.2% and 14.7%, respectively, with statistically significant differences (χ2=12 126.00, P<0.001). During the seasonal peak period of influenza from 2020 to 2022, there was a significant decrease in the intensity of the two influenza activity peaks that occurred before the virus became fully prevalent in the population. The first peak occurred from January to February 2020, and the positive detection rate of influenza nucleic acid decreased from 54.4% (317/583) in the third week to 2.1% (12/584) in the eighth week, with a statistically significant difference (χ2=394.49, P<0.001). The second occurred in December 2022, and the positive detection rate of influenza nucleic acid decreased from 14.9% (90/605) at the 49th week to 1.9% (11/572) at the 52nd week, with a statistically significant difference (χ2=62.88, P<0.001). The influenza epidemic in Jiangsu Province from 2020 to 2022 had obvious seasonal characteristics, and the distribution differences of influenza virus-positive cases in each month were statistically significant (χ2=858.00, P<0.001), with two epidemic peaks each year: winter, spring (December to March of the following year), and summer, and autumn (July to November). The epidemic strains were the B-V strain and seasonal H3 strain, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the positive detection rate of influenza cases detected in different age groups (χ2=60.00, P<0.001). The age group between 5 and 14 years old had the highest influenza-positive detection rate (10.4%), while the age group≥60 years old had a relatively low influenza-positive detection rate (5.1%). The positive detection rate decreased with the increase in the age group (Ztrend=12.82, P<0.001).

[Study on the correlation between type 2 diabetes mellitus combined with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and aerobic exercise performance]

Objective: To study the correlation between patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus combined with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in order to provide theoretical support for the treatment of NAFLD through aerobic exercise performance. Methods: 253 cases with T2DM combined with NAFLD were selected. 93 cases consented to undergo a liver biopsy. Among them, 74 cases with liver biopsy successfully passed the symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) and respiratory quotient (RQ)≥1.05. Patients were divided into two groups according to the NAFLD activity score (NAS) of the pathological biopsy: the non-NASH group (NAS < 4) and the NASH group (NAS≥4). The differences in general clinical and biochemical indicators and exercise parameters were compared between the two groups. The relevant factors that affect aerobic exercise performance in NAFLD patients were explored by correlation and regression analysis. Results: The peak oxygen uptake [VO2 @ peak, (17.82 ± 5.61) ml·kg(-1)·min(-1) and (23.14 ± 5.86) ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)] and anaerobic threshold [VO2 @ AT, (11.47 ± 3.12) ml·kg(-1)·min(-1) and (13.81 ± 3.53) ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)] were lower in the NASH group than those in the non-NASH group in T2DM patients, with P < 0.01, indicating a significant decrease in aerobic exercise performance in NASH patients compared to non-NASH patients. Correlation analysis showed that patients with T2DM combined with NAFLD VO2@peak was positively correlated with RQ, carbohydrate oxidation rate (%CHO), daily carbohydrate energy supply (CHO Kcal/d), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) (r 0.360, 0.334, 0.341, 0.255, 0.294, P < 0.05 or P < 0.01, respectively) and negatively correlated with NAS score, fat attenuation, liver stiffness, fat oxidation rate (%FAT), daily fat energy supply (FAT Kcal/d), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), body mass, and body mass index (BMI) (r -0.558, -0.411, -0.437, -0.340, -0.270, -0.288, -0.331, -0.295, -0.469, P < 0.05 or P < 0.01, respectively). VO2@AT were positively correlated with RQ, %CHO, total cholesterol (TC), and HDL-C (r 0.351, 0.247, 0.303, 0.380, P < 0.05 or P < 0.01, respectively), while it was negatively correlated with NAS score, fat attenuation, liver stiffness, %FAT, FAT (Kcal/d), ferritin (Fer), ALT, AST, body weight, and BMI (r -0.330, -0.384, -0.428, -0.270, -0.318, 0.320, -0.404, -0.416, -0.389, -0.520, P < 0.05 or P < 0.01, respectively). Stepwise multiple regression analyses revealed that BMI, RQ, and NAS scores were independent correlated factors of aerobic exercise performance. Conclusion: Hepatic inflammation and fibrosis affect the aerobic exercise performance of patients with T2DM combined with NAFLD.

[Expression and clinical significance of circRNA cSMARCA5 in patients with acute myocardial infarction]

Objective: To investigate the expression level and clinical significance of cSMARCA5 in the patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods: This study was a case-control study. A total of 100 patients with AMI and 100 patients without coronary heart disease who received treatment in the Department of Cardiology, Peking University Third Hospital from September to December 2021 were included in the study according to the principle of 1∶1 frequency matching. The expression levels of cSMARCA5 in the peripheral blood of AMI patients and control groups were measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to calculate the diagnostic ability of cSMARCA5 for AMI. Spearman or Pearson correlation analysis was used to explore the correlation between cSMARCA5 and the degree of myocardial necrosis, coronary lesion severity and GRACE risk stratification score. Bioinformatics analysis was used to predict the possible mechanism of cSMARCA5 in pathological changes of AMI. Results: The age [M (Q₁,Q₃)] of AMI patients and control group was 63.0 (56.0, 71.5) and 63.0 (53.0, 75.5) (P=0.622), and the proportion of males was 75.0% (75 cases) and 46.0% (46 cases) (P<0.001), respectively. The expression level [M (Q₁,Q₃)] of cSMARCA5 was significantly lower in AMI patients compared with the control group [0.37 (0.22, 0.73) vs 1.03(0.71, 1.75), P<0.001]. ROC analysis showed that the area under the curve of cSMARCA5 in diagnosing AMI was 0.83 (95%CI: 0.77-0.89, P<0.001), with a sensitivity of 89.0% and specificity of 67.7%. cSMARCA5 was negatively correlated with creatine kinase isoenzyme MB (r=-0.203, P=0.041), troponin T (r=-0.230, P=0.023) and N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide precursor (r=-0.250, P=0.012), and positively correlated with left ventricular ejection fraction (r=0.201, P=0.042). In addition, the expression level of cSMARCA5 was negatively correlated with SYNTAX score (r=-0.196, P=0.048) and GRACE risk score (r=-0.321, P=0.001). Bioinformatic analysis suggested that cSMARCA5 might be involved in the process of AMI through regulating the gene expression of tumor necrosis factor. Conclusions: The expression of cSMARCA5 is significantly decreased in peripheral blood of AMI patients compared with control group, and its expression level is negatively correlated with the severity of myocardial infarction. cSMARCA5 is expected to be a potential biomarker of AMI.

[A case of intramuscular injection of methomyl poisoning]

Methomyl is a carbamate insecticide widely used in pesticides. Most of the poisoning methods are through digestive tract, respiratory tract and skin contact. At present, there is no report of poisoning caused by intramuscular injection. A case of poisoning caused by intramuscular injection of methomyl was analyzed retrospectively. About 4 minutes later, cholinergic crisis and central inhibition occurred. Venovenous-Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VV-ECMO) and atropine were given quickly. Finally, the patient was successfully rescued and had a good prognosis. After intramuscular injection of methomyl, cholinergic crisis can occur rapidly, and the onset rate is significantly faster than that of digestive tract, respiratory tract and skin contact.

[Analysis of related factors of new-type drug use and recent HIV infection among men who have sex with men in Shandong province]

Objective: To understand the related factors of new-type drug use and recent HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM), and provide a reference for formulating targeted strategies for HIV/AIDS prevention and control. Methods: MSM were recruited in sentinel surveillance sites of nine cities in Shandong province from April to July 2021, with a sample size of 400 in each city. A face-to-face questionnaire was conducted to collect demographic characteristics, high-risk behaviors, acceptance of HIV intervention services, etc. Blood samples were collected for HIV and syphilis antibodies detection. Limiting-antigen avidity enzyme immunoassay (LAg-Avidity EIA) was used to detect recent HIV infection, and the rate of recent HIV infection was calculated. Results: 3 624 MSM were under study with the following characteristics as: aged (32.70±9.33) years old, the aged 30 and above (59.52%, 2 157/3 624), with high school education or below (55.99%, 2 029/3 624), being unmarried/divorced/widowed (57.70%, 2 091/3 624) and as having homosexual orientation (86.26%, 3 126/3 624) accounted for the more mainly. Of 32.95% (1 194/3 624) had same-sex unprotected anal sex in recent six months; 27.48% (993/3 613) ever used new-type drugs, and the HIV antibody positive rate was 3.12% (113/3 624). The recent HIV infection rate appeared as 2.61% (95%CI: 1.73%-3.49%). The multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that the related factors of new-type drug use were unmarried/divorced/widowed (compared with being married/cohabitating, aOR=1.43, 95%CI: 1.22-1.69), educational level of college or above (compared with educational level of high school or below, aOR=1.47, 95%CI: 1.25-1.72), mainly through the Internet/dating software to find male sex partners (compared with mainly through bars/baths/parks and other places to find male sex partners, aOR=1.76, 95%CI: 1.41-2.19). Those who had unprotected anal sex in the last six months (compared with no unprotected anal sex, aOR=1.33, 95%CI: 1.13-1.57), had sexually transmitted diseases in the past year (compared with no sexually transmitted disease, aOR=2.77, 95%CI: 2.04-3.76) were more likely to use new-type drugs. The multinominal logistic regression showed that MSM who had unprotected anal sex in the last six months (compared with no unprotected anal sex, aOR=2.51, 95%CI: 1.25-5.01) or did not receive HIV intervention services in the past year (compared with those who received HIV intervention services, aOR=3.89, 95%CI: 1.30-11.60), were syphilis positive (compared with syphilis negative, aOR=8.18, 95%CI: 2.98-22.48), used new-type drugs (compared with those who did not use new-type drugs, aOR=4.75, 95%CI: 2.32-9.70) had a higher risk of recent HIV infection. Conclusions: New-type drugs have been widely used in MSM in Shandong province. The abuse of new-type drugs increases the risk of recent HIV infection.

[Proliferative lesions with mesonephric features in the gynecologic tract: a clinicopathological analysis of sixteen cases]

Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological features of proliferations with mesonephric features (PMF) of the gynecologic tract. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical and pathological data of 16 cases with PMF that were diagnosed from October 2016 to January 2022 at a single institution. The relevant literature was reviewed. Results: Among the 16 cases, with an average of 53 years (31-68 years), there were 5 cases of mesonephric hyperplasia, 4 cases of mesonephric adenocarcinoma and 7 cases of mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma. The five cases of mesonephric hyperplasia were located in the lateral wall of the cervix and composed of simple tubules with growth patterns of diffuse or lobular clusters, without obvious stromal reaction. Four cases of mesonephric adenocarcinoma consisted of a mixture of papillary, cribriform, solid and other architectures, the nuclei resembling these of papillary thyroid carcinoma, and strong fibroproliferative reaction. They were located deep in the cervical and vaginal stroma. One of the tumors showed atypical mesonephric hyperplasia adjacent to the tumor. Five uterine and two ovarian mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma cases had similar histological morphology with mesonephric adenocarcinoma, but no mesonephric remnants/mesonephric hyperplasia were found near the tumors. In addition, four (4/5) uterine mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma cases originated from the endometrium with secondary involvement of myometrium, including one case with clear demarcation between the normal endometrium and the neoplastic glands. One (1/5) uterine mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma case was mainly located in the deep myometrium, along with adenomyosis around the tumor, without mesonephric remnants. Two ovarian mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma cases were associated with endometriotic cyst/endometrioid cystadenoma, including one case with an abrupt transition between normal epithelium and atypical mesonephric cells within the single individual cyst directly adjacent to tumor. All mesonephric hyperplasia and mesonephric adenocarcinoma cases were positive for GATA3, PAX8 and CD10 in a varying degree, and negative for ER, PR and TTF1. Although mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma showed a considerable overlap of immunohistochemical expression with mesonephric adenocarcinoma, seven mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma cases were positive for TTF1 and negative for GATA3. Conclusions: PMF is a class of rare proliferative lesions with morphological and immunophenotypic characteristics of mesonephric duct. Its commonly involved site, microscopic morphology, associated benign and/or atypical lesions, and immunophenotype may contribute to its diagnosis and differential diagnosis.

[The crucial toxic components of ambient fine particles promoted the maturation and differentiation of megakaryocytes]

Objective: To reveal the crucial toxic components of ambient fine particles (PM2.5) that affect the maturation and differentiation of megakaryocytes. Methods: Human megakaryocytes were exposed to the organic fractions, metallic fractions and water-soluble fractions of PM2.5 at two exposure doses (i.e. actual air proportion concentration or the same concentration), respectively. The cell viability was performed to screen the non-cytotoxic levels of toxic components of PM2.5 using the CCK-8 assay. CellTiter-Blue assay, morphological observation, flow cytometry analysis and WGA staining assay were used to evaluate the cell morphological changes, occurrence of DNA ploidy, alteration in the expressions of biomarkers and platelet formation, which were key indicators of the maturation and differentiation of megakaryocytes. Results: Compared to the control group, both metallic and organic components of PM2.5 resulted in a lag in megakaryocytes with an increase in cell volume and the onset of DNA ploidy. Flow cytometry analysis showed that CD33 (the marker of myeloid-specific) decreased and CD41a (a megakaryocyte maturation-associated antigen) increased in metallic and organic components of PM2.5 treatment groups. Moreover, compared to the control group, budding protrusions increased in metallic and organic components of PM2.5 treatment groups. The water-soluble components had no effect on the maturation and differentiation of macrophages. Conclusion: Metallic and organic components of PM2.5 are the crucial toxic components that promote the maturation and differentiation of megakaryocytes.

Outdoor light at night, overweight, and obesity in school-aged children and adolescents

Previous studies have indicated that outdoor light at night (LAN) is associated with a higher prevalence of overweight or obesity in adults. However, the association of LAN levels with overweight or obesity in children is still unknown. This study utilized data from the Seven Northeastern Cities study, which included 47,990 school-aged children and adolescents (ages 6-18 years). Outdoor LAN levels were measured using satellite imaging data. Weight and height were used to calculate age-sex-specific body mass index (BMI) Z-scores based on the World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards. Overweight status and obesity were defined using the Chinese standard. Information regarding socioeconomic status, sleep-related characteristics, and obesogenic factors were obtained using a questionnaire. A generalized linear mixed model examined the associations of outdoor LAN levels (in quartiles) with the outcomes of interest. Compared to children in the lowest quartile of outdoor LAN levels, children exposed to higher outdoor LAN levels had larger BMI Z-scores and higher odds of being overweight (including obesity) or obese, with the largest estimates in the third quartile [BMI Z-score: β = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.18-0.33; overweight (including obesity): OR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.25-1.56; obesity: OR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.29-1.65]. There was a significant sex difference (P_interaction<0.001) in the association of outdoor LAN levels with BMI Z-scores, and the association was stronger in males. Results remained robust following multiple sensitivity analyses and the adjustment of sleep-related characteristics, obesogenic factors, and environmental exposures. Our findings suggest that higher outdoor LAN levels are associated with larger BMI Z-scores and greater odds of overweight (including obesity) and obesity in school-aged children and adolescents. Further, the association between outdoor LAN levels and BMI Z-scores is stronger in males. Future studies with exposure assessments that consider both outdoor and indoor LAN exposures are needed.

[Analysis of clinical phenotype and genotype of Chinese children with disorders of sex development]

Objective: To explore the heterogeneity and correlation of clinical phenotypes and genotypes in children with disorders of sex development (DSD). Methods: A retrospective study of 1 235 patients with clinically proposed DSD in 36 pediatric medical institutions across the country from January 2017 to May 2021. After capturing 277 DSD-related candidate genes, second-generation sequencing was performed to analyzed the heterogeneity and correlation combined with clinical phenotypes. Results: Among 1 235 children with clinically proposed DSD, 980 were males and 255 were females of social gender at the time of initial diagnosis with the age ranged from 1 day of age to 17.92 years. A total of 443 children with pathogenic variants were detected through molecular genetic studies, with a positive detection rate of 35.9%. The most common clinical phenotypes were micropenis (455 cases), hypospadias (321 cases), and cryptorchidism (172 cases) and common mutations detected were in SRD5A2 gene (80 cases), AR gene (53 cases) and CYP21A2 gene (44 cases). Among them, the SRD5A2 mutation is the most common in children with simple micropenis and simple hypospadias, while the AMH mutation is the most common in children with simple cryptorchidism. Conclusions: The SRD5A2 mutation is the most common genetic variant in Chinese children with DSD, and micropenis, cryptorchidism, and hypospadias are the most common clinical phenotypes. Molecular diagnosis can provide clues about the biological basis of DSD, and can also guide clinicians to perform specific clinical examinations. Target sequence capture probes and next-generation sequencing technology can provide effective and economical genetic diagnosis for children with DSD.

The association between anthropogenic heat and adult hypertension in Northeast China

OBJECTIVES

Although the potential serious threat of anthropogenic heat on human health was receiving considerable attention worldwide, its long-term health effect on blood pressure (BP) remained unknown. We aimed to evaluate the associations of long-term anthropogenic heat exposure with different components of BP and hypertension.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study (Liaoning province, China) conducted in 2009, we included a total of 24,845 Chinese adults (18-74 years). We estimated the anthropogenic heat exposure in 2008 using multisource remote sensing images and ancillary data. We measured systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP) and pulse pressure (PP), and defined hypertension. We used generalized linear mixed model to examine the associations.

RESULTS

In the adjusted model, the estimates indicated that the difference in SBP, MAP and PP for those in highest quartiles of total anthropogenic heat exposure was greater compared with the lowest quartile (highest quartile: β = 1.11 [95% CI: 0.28-1.94], 0.60 [95% CI: 0.04-1.17], 0.76 [95% CI: 0.17-1.35]). Compared with the lowest quartile, the odds of hypertension were higher among those in higher quartiles (second quartile: OR = 1.17 [95% CI: 1.05-1.30]; third quartile:1.10 [95% CI: 1.1.01-1.21]; highest quartile: 1.17 [95% CI: 1.06-1.28]). These associations were stronger in female participants.

CONCLUSION

Our study showed that long-term exposure to anthropogenic heat was associated with elevated BP and higher odds of hypertension. These findings suggest that mitigation strategies to reduce anthropogenic heat should be considered.

[Two cases of acute chlorfenapyr poisoning and literature review]

In recent years, chlorfenapyr poisoning has gradually increased in clinical practice, but the case fatality rate remains high. At present, the research on its poisoning mechanism and clinical characteristics is limited, and there is no effective treatment. In order to summarize the clinical characteristics of chlorfenapyr poisoning, in order to guide the clinical treatment, this article reported 2 cases of acute chlorfenayr poisoning and 21 cases of literature review, and summarized the clinical characteristics of chlorfenapyr poisoning.Most of the symptoms of gastrointestinal symptoms, profuse sweating, high fever, and changes in consciousness after chlorfenapyr poisoning, and delayed exacerbations are common, which can involve multiple organ systems such as the central nervous system, providing a basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Improved morbidity-based air quality health index development using Bayesian multi-pollutant weighted model

BACKGROUND

The widely used Air Quality Index (AQI) has been criticized due to its inaccuracy, leading to the development of the air quality health index (AQHI), an improvement on the AQI. However, there is currently no consensus on the most appropriate construction strategy for the AQHI.

OBJECTIVES

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the utility of AQHIs constructed by different models and health outcomes, and determine a better strategy.

METHODS

Based on the daily time-series outpatient visits and hospital admissions from 299 hospitals (January 2016-December 2018), and mortality (January 2017-December 2019) in Guangzhou, China, we utilized cumulative risk index (CRI) method, Bayesian multi-pollutant weighted (BMW) model and standard method to construct AQHIs for different health outcomes. The effectiveness of AQHIs constructed by different strategies was evaluated by a two-stage validation analysis and examined their exposure-response relationships with the cause-specific morbidity and mortality.

RESULTS

Validation by different models showed that AQHI constructed with the BMW model (BMW-AQHI) had the strongest association with the health outcome either in the total population or subpopulation among air quality indexes, followed by AQHI constructed with the CRI method (CRI-AQHI), then common AQHI and AQI. Further validation by different health outcomes showed that AQHI constructed with the risk of outpatient visits generally exhibited the highest utility in presenting mortality and morbidity, followed by AQHI constructed with the risk of hospitalizations, then mortality-based AQHI and AQI. The contributions of NO₂ and O₃ to the final AQHI were prominent, while the contribution of SO₂ and PM_2.5 were relatively small.

CONCLUSIONS

The BMW model is likely to be more effective for AQHI construction than CRI and standard methods. Based on the BMW model, the AQHI constructed with the outpatient data may be more effective in presenting short-term health risks associated with the co-exposure to air pollutants than the mortality-based AQHI and existing AQIs.

The effects of Cl-PFESAs exposure on blood lipids - A community-based large population study in Guangzhou

Numerous epidemiological studies have investigated the lipid interference effects of legacy PFASs, however, no studies on PFAS alternatives and blood lipids have been published. In this study, we explored the association between Cl-PFESAs, a typical PFASs alternative in China, and blood lipid profiles in 1336 Guangzhou community residents using linear and non-linear regression models. The results showed a deleterious effect of Cl-PFESAs and blood lipids: adjusted estimates (β) for TC, TG, LDL-C and HDL-C per natural log unit increase of 6:2 Cl-PFESA were 0.029 (95% CI: 0.020, 0.038), 0.075 (95% CI: 0.049, 0.101), 0.035 (95% CI: 0.021, 0.049) and -0.071 (95% CI: -0.084, -0.058), respectively. The association between Cl-PFESAs and dyslipidemia was also positively significant (P < 0.05). Furthermore, a non-linear relationship was observed in Cl-PFESAs and serum lipid levels using a restricted cubic splines (RCS) model. In summary, our research suggested a negative impact of Cl-PFESAs on blood lipid patterns and a possible non-linear association.

Exposure to second-hand smoke during early life and subsequent sleep problems in children: a population-based cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Previous studies have revealed that current secondhand smoke exposure showed highly suggestive evidence for increased risk of simultaneous sleep problems in children. Data on the associations between early-life exposure to SHS with subsequent sleep problems in children were scarce. We aimed to evaluate the associations of early-life SHS exposure with sleep problems in children.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, children were recruited from elementary and middle schools in Liaoning Province, China between April 2012 and January 2013. We assessed early-life SHS exposure (pregnancy and the first 2 years of life) via questionnaires. Sleep problems and different types of sleep-related symptoms were measured based on the validated tool of the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC). Generalized linear mixed models were applied to estimate the associations of early-life SHS exposure with sleep problems.

RESULTS

We included a total of 45,562 children (22,657 [49.7%] males; mean [SD] age, 11.0 [2.6] years) and 6167 of them (13.5%) were exposed to early-life SHS during both pregnancy and the first 2 years of life. Compared with unexposed counterparts, children exposed to early-life SHS had higher total T-scores of SDSC (β = 4.32; 95%CI: 4.06, 4.58) and higher odds of increased sleep problems (OR = 2.14; 95%CI: 1.89, 2.42). When considering different sleep-related symptoms, the associations between early-life SHS exposure and symptom of sleep-wake transition disorders (i.e., bruxism) were the strongest in all analyses.

CONCLUSIONS

Early-life SHS exposure was associated with higher odds of global sleep problems and different sleep-related symptoms in children aged 6-18 years. Our findings highlight the importance to strengthen efforts to support the critical importance of maintaining a smoke-free environment especially in early life.

[Necessity of repeated renal arteriography in the treatment of severe hemorrhage after percutaneous nephrolithotomy]

In order to discuss the necessity of repeated renal arteriography in the treatment of severe bleeding after percutaneous nephrolithotomy, this study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of patients with severe bleeding after percutaneous nephrolithotomy in the Department of Urology Surgery of the First Hospital of China Medical University from August 2010 to July 2020, summarily analyzing treatments, outcomes and follow-up results of 27 patients who were treated by renal arteriography more than twice. Of these 27 patients who underwent repeated renal arteriography, 23 of them were treated by two times, 4 by three times, all of whom were diagnosed as renal vascular injury. And 15 of them were diagnosed as pseudoaneurysm, 4 of them renal arteriovenous fistula, and 8 of them pseudoaneurysm combined with renal arteriovenous fistula. After clear diagnosis, all these patients were performed with renal artery embolization, after which the symptoms of hematuria and lumbar discomfort were relieved or disappeared immediately. These patients were followed up from 6 months to 5 years, without corresponding symptoms recurring and with the renal function equivalent to that before embolization. The results showed that repeated renal arteriography was of great significance in the treatment of patients with severe bleeding after percutaneous nephrolithotomy, helping to clarify the cause of bleeding and giving appropriate and timely treatment.

[Comparative study on fracture toughness of digital light processing three-dimensional printing zirconia and milled zirconia]

Objective: To investigate the influence of digital light processing (DLP) and computer numerical controlmilling (CNC) on the mechanical behavior of zirconia. Methods: Prepared DLP samples (experimental group, n=52) and CNC samples (control group, n=52) with 12 samples in each group were randomly selected using random number table to measure density, grain size and crystal phase composition. According to the different methods fracture toughness test, the samples were divided into indentation method group (IM) and single-edge-V-notch-beam group (SEVNB), with 30 DLP and 30 CNC samples in IM group, 10 DLP and 10 CNC samples in SEVNB group. The IM group was tested under three different loads (49.03 N, 98.07 N, 196.10 N), there were 10 samples for each load and each sample was tested at 15 points, and the load with the ratio of crack length to indentation diagonal length greater than 2.5 was selected as the indentation load to calculate its IM fracture toughness. At the same time, the SEVNB group was tested with four point bending test to record the maximum load at the time of fracture and calculate the SEVNB fracture toughness. Finally, the indentation and fracture surface were observed using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope, and the results of DLP group and CNC group were further compared to explore the difference in fracture mechanism. Results: The microstructure of DLP and CNC zirconia was basically the same, the density of DLP group was (6.020±0.021) g/cm³, the grain size was (0.603±0.033) μm; the density of CNC group was (6.038±0.012) g/cm³, the grain size was (0.591±0.033) μm. Both groups were composed of tetragonal zirconia. The load of 196.10 N was chosen as the indentation load for two groups to calculate the IM fracture toughness. In terms of fracture toughness, there was no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). Scanning electron microscope images of fracture surface showed the intergranular fracture was the leading fracture mode of two groups. The IM and SEVNB fracture toughness of DLP zirconia were (6.111±0.179) MPa·m^1/2 and (7.221±0.809) MPa·m^1/2, respectively. The IM and SEVNB fracture toughness of CNC zirconia were (6.126±0.383) MPa·m^1/2 and (7.408±0.533) MPa·m^1/2, respectively. Conclusions: The microstructure of DLP and CNC zirconia is almost the same, and there is little difference in the fracture toughness of zirconia between two processing technologies.

Short-Term Effects of Particle Sizes and Constituents on Blood Biomarkers among Healthy Young Adults in Guangzhou, China

Evidence of the effects of various particle sizes and constituents on blood biomarkers is limited. We performed a panel study with five repeated measurements in 88 healthy college students in Guangzhou, China between December 2017 and January 2018. Mass concentrations of particles with aerodynamic diameters ≤ 2.5 μm (PM_2.5), PM₁, and PM_0.5 and number concentrations of particles with aerodynamic diameters ≤ 200 nm (PN_0.2) and PN_0.1 were measured. We used linear mixed-effect models to explore the associations of size-fractionated particulate matter and PM_2.5 constituents with five blood biomarkers 0-5 days prior to blood collection. We found that an interquartile range (45.9 μg/m³) increase in PM_2.5 concentration was significantly associated with increments of 16.6, 3.4, 12.3, and 8.8% in C-reactive protein (CRP), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), and endothelin-1(ET-1) at a 5-day lag, respectively. Similar estimates were observed for PM₁, PM_0.5, PN_0.2, and PN_0.1. For PM_2.5 constituents, consistent positive associations were observed between F^- and sVCAM-1 and CRP and between NH₄⁺ and MCP-1, and negative associations were found between Na⁺ and MCP-1 and ET-1, between Cl^- and MCP-1, and between Mg²⁺ and sVCAM-1. Our results suggested that both particle size and constituent exposure are significantly associated with circulating biomarkers among healthy Chinese adults. Particularly, PN_0.1 at a 5-day lag and F^- and NH₄⁺ are the most associated with these blood biomarkers.

Association of Prenatal, Early Postnatal, or Current Exposure to Secondhand Smoke With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms in Children

IMPORTANCE

Few studies have investigated the association between the exposure window (prenatal, early postnatal, and current period) of secondhand smoke (SHS) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and subtypes in children.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the associations of prenatal, early postnatal, or current SHS exposure with ADHD symptoms and subtypes among school-aged children.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS

In this cross-sectional study, 48 612 children aged 6 to 18 years from elementary and middle schools in Liaoning province, China, between April 2012 and January 2013 were eligible for participation. Data on SHS exposure and ADHD symptoms and subtypes for each child were collected via questionnaires administered to parents or guardians by school teachers. Data were analyzed from September 14 to December 2, 2020.

MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES

The ADHD symptoms and subtypes (inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity, and combined) were measured based on a validated tool developed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition). Generalized linear mixed models were evaluated to estimate the association of SHS exposure with ADHD symptoms and subtypes.

RESULTS

A total of 45 562 participants completed the questionnaires and were included in this study (22 905 girls [50.3%]; mean [SD] age, 11.0 [2.6] years; 2170 [4.8%] with ADHD symptoms). Compared with their unexposed counterparts, children who were ever exposed (odds ratio [OR], 1.50; 95% CI, 1.36-1.66) or always exposed to SHS (OR, 2.88; 95% CI, 2.55-3.25) from pregnancy to childhood had higher odds of having ADHD symptoms and subtypes (ORs ranged from 1.46 [95% CI, 1.31-1.62] to 2.94 [95% CI, 2.09-4.13]). Compared with their unexposed counterparts, children with SHS exposure had higher odds of having ADHD symptoms when exposed in the prenatal period (OR, 2.28; 95% CI, 2.07-2.51), early postnatal period (OR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.29-1.68), or current period (OR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.09-1.31). Compared with their unexposed counterparts, children whose fathers smoked 10 or more cigarettes/d on both weekdays and weekends had higher odds of having ADHD symptoms and subtypes (ORs ranged from 1.48 [95% CI, 1.28-1.70] to 2.25 [95% CI, 1.29-3.93]).

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE

Being exposed to SHS from pregnancy to childhood was associated with higher odds of having ADHD symptoms and subtypes among school-aged children, and the associations were somewhat stronger for SHS exposure during prenatal and early postnatal periods. Our findings highlight the important public health implications of reducing SHS exposure, which may decrease the health and economic burdens of individuals with ADHD.

Perfluorooctanesulfonate and perfluorooctanoate exacerbate airway inflammation in asthmatic mice and in vitro

Emerging evidence suggests associations between Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) exposure and asthma, but the findings are inconsistent. The current study sought to investigate whether perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) could contribute to asthma exacerbation and to clarify the underlying biological mechanisms. The objectives are a) to determine whether PFOS or PFOA could aggravate the mouse asthma and pulmonary inflammation b) to investigate whether PFOS and PFOA regulate the balance of Th1/Th2 through the JAK-STAT signaling pathway and aggravated asthma. Ovalbumin (OVA) induced asthmatic mice were exposed to PFOS or PFOA by gavage. PFOS and PFOA serum level and toxicity in organs were assessed; and the impacts on respiratory symptoms, lung tissue pathology, T helper cell (Th2) response, and STAT6 pathway activity were also evaluated. In vitro Jurkat cells were used to study the mechanisms of PFOS and PFOA mediated Th1 and Th2 responses. Both PFOS and PFOA exacerbated lung tissue inflammation (greater number of eosinophils and mucus hyperproduction), upregulated Th2 cytokine production (IL-4 and IL-13), and promoted Th2 cells and STAT6 activation. Furthermore, PFOS and PFOA enhanced the Th2 response in Jurkat cells via STAT6 activation; and the effect of PFOS exposure on GATA-3, IL-4 and IFN-γ was blocked after the expression of STAT6 was suppressed in Jurkat cells, however, the effects of PFOA exposure were only partially blocked. PFOS and PFOA aggravated inflammation among OVA-induced asthmatic mice, by promoting the Th2 response in lymphocytes and disturbing the balance of Th1/Th2 through the JAK-STAT signaling pathway.

PASP: Property analysis and simulation package for materials

We have developed a software package, namely, PASP (Property Analysis and Simulation Package for materials), to analyze the structural, electronic, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of complex condensed matter systems. Our package integrates several functionalities including symmetry analysis, global structure searching methods, effective Hamiltonian methods, and Monte Carlo simulation methods. In conjunction with first-principles calculations, PASP has been successfully applied to diverse physical systems. In this paper, we give a brief introduction to its main features and underlying theoretical formulism. Some typical applications are provided to demonstrate the usefulness, high efficiency, and reliability of PASP. We expect that further developments will make PASP a general-purpose tool for material simulation and property calculation of condensed matters.

Greenness may improve lung health in low-moderate but not high air pollution areas: Seven Northeastern Cities' study

INTRODUCTION

There is growing interest in the impact of greenness exposure on airway diseases, but the impact of greenness on lung function in children is limited. We aimed to investigate the associations between greenness surrounding schools and lung function in children and whether these associations are modified by air pollution exposure.

METHODS

Between 2012 and 2013, a cross-sectional survey and spirometry were performed among 6740 school children. Lung function patterns were determined as obstructive forced expiratory volume 1 s/forced vital capacity (FEV₁/FVC <0.8) or restrictive (FEV₁/FVC ≥0.8 but FVC <80% of predicted). School greenness was defined by Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and soil-adjusted vegetation index. Nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and particular matter concentrations were assessed using a spatiotemporal model and national monitoring data. Two-level generalised linear models were used to investigate associations and interactions.

RESULTS

Overall, an IQR in NDVI within 500 m was associated with higher FEV₁ (+57 mL 95% CI 44 to 70) and FVC (+58 mL 95% CI 43 to 73). NDVI was similarly associated with 25% reduced odds of spirometric restriction (OR: 0.75, 95% CI 0.65 to 0.86). However, among children exposed to the highest compared with the lowest quartile of particulate matter, increasing NDVI was paradoxically associated with lower -40 mL FVC (95% CI -47 to -33, p interaction <0.05).

DISCUSSION

Our findings suggest that, in this study population, greening urban areas may promote lung health in low-moderate pollution areas but not in high air pollution areas. If the findings are replicated in other moderate-to-high pollution settings, this highlights a need to have a flexible green policy.

Associations of ambient particulate matter with homocysteine metabolism markers and effect modification by B vitamins and MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism

Evidence concerning effects of ambient air pollution on homocysteine (HCY) metabolism is scarce. We aimed to explore the associations between ambient particulate matter (PM) exposure and the HCY metabolism markers and to evaluate effect modifications by folate, vitamin B₁₂, and methylenetetrahyfrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T gene polymorphism. Between December 1, 2017 and January 5, 2018, we conducted a panel study in 88 young college students in Guangzhou, China, and received 5 rounds of health examinations. Real-time concentrations of PMs with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 (PM_2.5), ≤1.0 (PM_1.0), and ≤0.1 (PM_0.1) were monitored, and the serum HCY metabolism markers (i.e., HCY, S-Adenosylhomocysteine [SAH], and S-Adenosylmethionine [SAM]) were repeatedly measured. We applied linear mixed effect models combined with a distributed lag model to evaluate the associations of PMs with the HCY metabolism markers. We also explored effect modifications of folate, vitamin B₁₂, and the MTHFR C677T polymorphism on the associations. We observed that higher concentrations of PM_2.5 and PM_1.0 were associated with higher serum levels of HCY, SAH, SAM, and SAM/SAH ratio (e.g., a 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5 during lag 0 day and lag 5 day was significantly associated with 1.3-19.4%, 1.3-28.2%, 6.2-64.4%, and 4.8-28.2% increase in HCY, SAH, SAM, and SAM/SAH ratio, respectively). In addition, we observed that the associations of PM_2.5 with the HCY metabolism markers were stronger in participants with lower B vitamins levels. This study demonstrated that short-term exposure to PM_2.5 and PM_1.0 was deleteriously associated with the HCY metabolism markers, especially in people with lower B vitamins levels.

Serum levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances alternatives and blood pressure by sex status: Isomers of C8 health project in China

Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the toxicity of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) alternatives, however, relevant epidemiological findings remain to be performed. In addition, the association between PFASs alternatives and blood pressure has not been explored. To address this gap, we quantified serum levels of alternatives and legacy PFAS in 1273 healthy Chinese, aged 34-94 years, from "isomers of C8 health project". Our results showed that an increase of serum PFASs levels was correlated with elevated blood pressure and higher prevalence of hypertension: per natural log unit (ng/mL) increase of 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acids (Cl-PFESA) elevated 1.31 (95%CI: 0.13, 2.50) mmHg of diastolic pressure (DBP). Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for hypertension with per natural log increase of 6:2 and 8:2 Cl-PFESA were 2.57 (95%CI: 1.86, 3.56) and 1.18 (95%CI: 1.06, 1.32), respectively. When stratified by sex, the effects of PFASs alternatives on increased blood pressure and hypertension were stronger in women. Meanwhile, the association between 6:2 Cl-PFESA (aOR = 6.81; 95%CI: 3.54, 13.09) and hypertension was stronger than perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) (aOR = 2.32, 95%CI: 1.38, 3.91) in women. In conclusion, our pilot study demonstrates that serum concentrations of PFASs alternatives are positively associated with blood pressure. Moreover, women seem to be more susceptible, and alternatives exhibited stronger effects than legacy PFASs.

Is PM1 similar to PM2.5? A new insight into the association of PM1 and PM2.5 with children's lung function

Experimental data suggests that PM₁ is more toxic than PM_2.5 although the epidemiologic evidence suggests that the health associations are similar. However, few objective exposure data are available to compare the associations of PM₁ and PM_2.5 with children lung function. Our objectives are a) to evaluate associations between long-term exposure to PM₁, PM_2.5 and children's lung function, and b) to compare the associations between PM₁ and PM_2.5. From 2012 to 2013, we enrolled 6,740 children (7-14 years), randomly recruited from primary and middle schools located in seven cities in northeast China. We measured lung function including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF) utilizing two portable electronic spirometers. We dichotomized continuous lung function measures according the expected values for gender and age. The spatial resolution at which PM₁ and PM_2.5 estimated were estimated using a machine learning method and the temporal average concentrations were averaged from 2009 to 2012. A multilevel regression model was used to estimate the associations of PM₁, PM_2.5 exposure and lung function measures, adjusted for confounding factors. Associations with lower lung function were consistently larger for PM₁ than for PM_2.5. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) per interquartile range greater PM₁ ranged from 1.53 for MMEF (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20-1.96) to 2.14 for FEV1 (95% CI: 1.66-2.76) and ORs for PM_2.5 ranged from 1.36 for MMEF (95%CI: 1.12-1.66) to 1.82 for FEV1 (95%CI: 1.49-2.22), respectively. PM₁ and PM_2.5 had significant associations with FVC and FEV1 in primary school children, and on PEF and MMEF in middle school children. Long-term PM₁ and PM_2.5 exposure can lead to decreased lung function in children, and the associations of PM₁ are stronger than PM_2.5. Therefore, PM₁ may be more hazardous to children's respiratory health than PM_2.5 exposure.

[Study on the influence of sleeve height and implant length on accuracy of static computer-assisted implant surgery]

Objective: To evaluate the influence of the sleeve lengths and implant lengths on accuracy of static computer-assisted implant surgery (sCAIS). Methods: Twenty-eight models of bilateral mandibular single tooth loss were included. Fifty-five implants were placed under the guidance of sCAIS (Straumann Bone Level 4.1 mm×10 mm). According to the height of metal sleeve of static guide plate, 55 implants were divided into 11 groups (free hand group, 1 mm group, 2 mm group, 3 mm group, 4 mm group, 5 mm group, 6 mm group, 7 mm group, 8 mm group, 9 mm group, 10 mm group), with 5 implants in each group. Eight research models were included. Group with 5 mm sleeve guides were used to place implants of different length, (Straumann Bone Level width 4.1 mm, height was 8 mm, 10 mm and 14 mm), 5 implants in each group. Eighteen patients with mandibular single tooth loss were included in the Department of Oral Implantology, Tianjin Stomatological Hospital from October 2018 to June 2019. There were 10 males and 8 females, 18-46(33.7±7.9) years old. A total of 18 implants were implanted and divided into 3 groups (free hand group, 3 mm group and 5 mm group) with 6 implants in each group. Digital software was used to compare the implant positions before and after implantation. Non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test or one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the results. Results: There was no significant difference in implant vertical deviation between different sleeve height groups (1-10 mm) and free hand group, but the neck deviation in free hand group[(1.04±0.13) mm] was significantly higher than that in different sleeve height groups (1-10 mm) (P<0.05). The tip deviations of free hand group, 1 mm group and 2 mm group [(1.32±0.43), (0.83±0.10) and (0.78±0.11) mm, respectively] was significantly higher than that of 10 mm group [(0.31±0.14) mm](P<0.05). The angle deviation of free hand group and 1 mm group (3.99°±0.85° and 2.59°±0.69°), respectively] was significantly higher than that of 10 mm group (0.61°±0.03°) (P<0.05). The tip deviations of implants in the 14 mm group [(0.83±0.22) mm] was significantly higher than that in the 8 mm and 10 mm groups [(0.44±0.07) and (0.49±0.06) mm, respectively]. Clinical studies showed that there was no significant difference in neck deviation, tip deviation and angle deviation between 3 mm group and 5 mm group (P>0.05), but deviations were significantly lower than those in free hand group (P<0.05). Conclusions: The length of the sleeves has significant influence on the accuracy of the surgical guide. There was no significant difference in accuracy of the implant guide with 3 mm or 5 mm metal sleeves. The vitro study has some limitations and needs further systematic research.

Association Between Residential Greenness, Cardiometabolic Disorders, and Cardiovascular Disease Among Adults in China

IMPORTANCE

Living in areas with more vegetation (referred to as residential greenness) may be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), but little data are available from low- and middle-income countries. In addition, it remains unclear whether the presence of cardiometabolic disorders modifies or mediates the association between residential greenness and CVD.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the associations between residential greenness, cardiometabolic disorders, and CVD prevalence among adults in China.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS

This analysis was performed as part of the 33 Communities Chinese Health Study, a large population-based cross-sectional study that was conducted in 33 communities (ranging from 0.25-0.64 km2) in 3 cities within the Liaoning province of northeastern China between April 1 and December 31, 2009. Participants included adults aged 18 to 74 years who had resided in the study area for 5 years or more. Greenness levels surrounding each participant's residential community were assessed using the normalized difference vegetation index and the soil-adjusted vegetation index from 2010. Lifetime CVD status (including myocardial infarction, heart failure, coronary heart disease, cerebral thrombosis, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral embolism, and subarachnoid hemorrhage) was defined as a self-report of a physician diagnosis of CVD at the time of the survey. Cardiometabolic disorders, including hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and overweight or obese status, were measured and defined clinically. Generalized linear mixed models were used to evaluate the association between residential greenness levels and CVD prevalence. A 3-way decomposition method was used to explore whether the presence of cardiometabolic disorders mediated or modified the association between residential greenness and CVD. Data were analyzed from October 10 to May 30, 2020.

RESULTS

Among 24 845 participants, the mean (SD) age was 45.6 (13.3) years, and 12 661 participants (51.0%) were men. A total of 1006 participants (4.1%) reported having a diagnosis of CVD. An interquartile range (1-IQR) increase in the normalized difference vegetation index within 500 m of a community was associated with a 27% lower likelihood (odds ratio [OR], 0.73; 95% CI, 0.65-0.83; P < .001) of CVD prevalence, and an IQR increase in the soil-adjusted vegetation index within 500 m of a community was associated with a 26% lower likelihood (OR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.66-0.84; P < .001) of CVD prevalence. The presence of cardiometabolic disorders was found to mediate the association between residential greenness and CVD, with mediation effects of 4.5% for hypertension, 4.1% for type 2 diabetes, 3.1% for overweight or obese status, 12.7% for hypercholesterolemia, 8.7% for hypertriglyceridemia, and 11.1% for high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE

In this cross-sectional study, higher residential greenness levels were associated with lower CVD prevalence, and this association may be partially mediated by the presence of cardiometabolic disorders. Further studies, preferably longitudinal, are warranted to confirm these findings.

The role of influenza vaccination in mitigating the adverse impact of ambient air pollution on lung function in children: New insights from the Seven Northeastern Cities Study in China

BACKGROUND

Ambient air pollution exposure and influenza virus infection have been documented to be independently associated with reduced lung function previously. Influenza vaccination plays an important role in protecting against influenza-induced severe diseases. However, no study to date has focused on whether influenza vaccination may modify the associations between ambient air pollution exposure and lung function.

METHODS

We undertook a cross-sectional study of 6740 children aged 7-14 years into Seven Northeast Cities (SNEC) Study in China during 2012-2013. We collected information from parents/guardians about sociodemographic factors and influenza vaccination status in the past three years. Lung function was measured using portable electronic spirometers. Machine learning methods were used to predict 4-year average ambient air pollutant exposures to nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <1 μm (PM₁), <2.5 μm (PM_2.5) and <10 μm (PM₁₀). Two-level linear and logistic regression models were used to assess interactions between influenza vaccination and long-term ambient air pollutants exposure on lung function reduction, controlling for potential confounding factors.

RESULTS

Ambient air pollution were observed significantly associated with reductions in lung function among children. We found significant interactions between influenza vaccination and air pollutants on lung function, suggesting greater vulnerability to air pollution among unvaccinated children. For example, an interaction (p_interaction = 0.002) indicated a -283.44 mL (95% CI: -327.04, -239.83) reduction in forced vital capacity (FVC) per interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM₁ concentrations among unvaccinated children, compared with the -108.24 mL (95%CI: -174.88, -41.60) reduction in FVC observed among vaccinated children. Results from logistic regression models also showed stronger associations between per IQR increase in PM₁ and lung function reduction measured by FVC and peak expiratory flow (PEF) among unvaccinated children than the according ORs among vaccinated children [i.e., Odds Ratio (OR) for PM₁ and impaired FVC: 2.33 (95%CI: 1.79, 3.03) vs 1.65 (95%CI: 1.20, 2.28); OR for PM_2.5 and impaired PEF: 1.45 (95%CI: 1.12,1.87) vs 1.04 (95%CI: 0.76,1.43)]. The heterogeneity of the modification by influenza vaccination of the associations between air pollution exposure and lung function reduction appeared to be more substantial in girls than in boys.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that influenza vaccination may moderate the detrimental effects of ambient air pollution on lung function among children. This study provides new insights into the possible co-benefits of strengthening and promoting global influenza vaccination programs among children.

Pet ownership in utero and in childhood decreases the effects of environmental tobacco smoke exposure on hypertension in children: A large population based cohort study

BACKGROUND

Little is known about whether exposure to pets influences the association between hypertension and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). The current study aims to examine the interaction of pet ownership on ETS exposure and the development of hypertension in children.

METHODS

From 2012 to 2013, a total of 9354 children, 5 to 17 years of age, were recruited from 62 schools in seven northeastern cities. BP in children was measured and hypertension was defined as an average diastolic blood pressure (DBP) or systolic blood pressure (SBP) at or above the 95th percentile for that child's age, sex, and height. Pet ownership in three different time periods (in utero, past 2 years, and currently) and ETS exposure data were collected from parents via a questionnaire. Two-level regressions were used for the data analyses.

RESULTS

The data show consistent, significant interactions between exposure to pets and effects from ETS. Children who were not exposed to pets experienced stronger effects from ETS on hypertension when compared to those exposed to pets, and the protective effect of pet ownership became stronger with a greater number of pets in the home. Exposure to in utero ETS was associated with hypertension [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.13-1.54] only for those children without pet exposure in utero but not for those with pets (aOR = 0.75; 95% CI: 0.49-1.15) (p_interaction < 0.05). Moreover, household dog ownership was related to significantly lower effects of current ETS on hypertension (aOR = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.61-1.05) compared with children without dogs (aOR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.11-1.44) (p_interaction = 0.001). Interaction associations between ETS and pet ownership were more robust for girls than for boys and for younger than older children.

CONCLUSION

This study indicates an inverse relationship between pet ownership and ETS, potentially pointing to pet ownership as protecting against the development of hypertension in children.

The time window of pet ownership exposure modifies the relationship of Environmental Tobacco Smoke with lung function: A large population-based cohort study

There is a large body of evidence linking Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) exposure with impaired lung function. However, it is not known whether exposure to pets modifies this relationship. To investigate if pet ownership changes the association between ETS exposure and lung function, a population-based sample of 7326 children, 7-14 years old, were randomly recruited from 24 districts in northeast China. Lung function including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV₁), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF) was measured by spirometry, while pet ownership time periods and ETS exposure were collected by questionnaire. Two-level regression analysis was done, with covariates controlled for. The results showed pet exposure in certain early lifetime windows modified the associations of ETS exposure on decreased lung function in children. Among children exposed to current ETS, those exposed to pets in utero had greater reductions in lung function (for instance: OR for reduced FVC (<85% predicted) = 10.86; 95% CI: 3.80-30.97) than those not exposed to pets in utero (OR = 2.32; 95% CI: 1.76-3.05) (p_interaction = 0.005). While, children exposed to current pet ownership reduced the lung function impairment induced by ETS exposure during the first 2 years of life and/or ETS exposure during pregnancy, especially for FVC impairment. For instance, OR (95%CI) for reduced FVC (<85% predicted) was 0.81 (0.56, 1.18) and 1.42 (1.15, 1.74), respectively, for children with or without current pet ownership exposed to ETS during the first 2 years of life (p_interaction = 0.010). Furthermore, pet type or number of pets did not significantly modify associations between ETS exposure and lung function. In conclusion, the timing of pet ownership modified associations between ETS exposure and lung function, pet ownership in utero and during the first 2 years of life significantly worsened the adverse impacts of passive smoking on lung function.

Alternatives of perfluoroalkyl acids and hepatitis B virus surface antibody in adults: Isomers of C8 Health Project in China

Previous epidemiological and experimental studies have shown that legacy perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are immunotoxic. However, whether the immunosuppressive effects in PFAA alternatives which recently have been widely detected in the environment are unknown. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the relationship of serum legacy PFAAs and PFAA alternatives with the antibody of hepatitis B virus in adults. We recruited 605 participants from a cross-sectional study, the Isomer of C8 Health Project in China. We measured two representative legacy PFAAs (perfluorooctane sulfonate, PFOS and perfluorooctanoic acid, PFOA), and three PFAA alternatives (two chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acids, Cl-PFESAs and perfluorobutanoic acid, PFBA) in serum using ultra-performance liquid chromatograph-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). We applied linear and logistic regression models to analyze associations between serum PFAAs and hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) with multivariable adjustments. We found negative associations between serum PFAAs concentrations and HBsAb. Lower serum HBsAb levels (log mIU/mL) were observed for each log-unit increase in linear PFOS (β = -0.31, 95% confidential interval: 0.84, -0.18), 6:2 PFESA (β = -0.81, 95% CI: 1.20, -0.42), 8:2 PFESA (β = -0.29, 95% CI: 0.43, -0.14) and PFBA (β = -0.18, 95% CI: 0.28, -0.08). The association between PFAAs and HBsAb seronegative seemed to be higher for 6:2 PFESA (odds ratio = 3.32, 95% CI: 2.16, 5.10) than its predecessors, linear PFOS (OR = 1.96, 95% CI: 1.37, 2.81) and branched PFOS isomers (OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.05, 2.56). We report new evidence that exposure to PFAA alternatives are associated with lower HBsAb in adults. This association seems to be stronger in 6:2 PFESA than PFOS. Our results suggest that more studies are needed to clarify the potential toxicity of PFAA alternatives in human which will facilitate better chemical regulations for PFAAs.

Are perfluorooctane sulfonate alternatives safer? New insights from a birth cohort study

BACKGROUND

Experimental studies show that chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acids (Cl-PFESA 6:2 and 8:2), one of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) used as perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) alternatives, are reproductive toxicants in vivo and in vitro. However, the associations between gestational exposure to Cl-PFESAs and birth outcomes are unknown.

OBJECTIVES

We investigated associations between 6:2 Cl-PFESA and 8:2 Cl-PFESA in maternal serum and birth outcomes.

METHODS

We measured four PFAS, including 6:2 Cl-PFESA, 8:2 Cl-PFESA, PFOS, and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in third-trimester maternal serum collected from 372 mother-child dyads participating in the Guangzhou Birth Cohort Study. Characteristics of mothers and infants were gathered from medical records and by interviewer-administered questionnaires.

RESULTS

PFOS was the most abundant PFAS in maternal serum (median: 7.15 ng/mL), followed by 6:2 Cl-PFESA (median: 2.41 ng/mL). Greater maternal serum levels of all PFAS alternatives were significantly associated with lower birth weight, adjusted for confounding variables. For example, each ln-ng/mL greater concentration of 6:2 Cl-PFESA and 8:2 Cl-PFESA was associated with a 54.44 g [95% confidence interval (CI): -95.66, -13.22] and 21.15 g (95% CI: -41.44, -0.86) lower birth weight, respectively. Greater continuous maternal serum 6:2 Cl-PFESA (OR: 2.67, 95% CI: 1.73, 4.15) and PFOS (OR: 2.03, 95% CI: 1.24, 3.32) were also associated with higher risks for preterm birth, adjusted for confounders, with a possible threshold effect at the highest quartile of 6:2 Cl-PFESA.

CONCLUSIONS

For the first time, we report associations between maternal serum 6:2 Cl-PFESA and 8:2 Cl-PFESA concentrations and adverse birth outcomes. Our findings suggest that PFOS alternatives may be reproductive toxicants in human populations and should be considered with caution before widespread use. Given the preliminary nature of our results, additional epidemiological and toxicological investigations are needed to more definitively assess the risks.

Association between residential greenness and metabolic syndrome in Chinese adults

BACKGROUND

Residing in greener areas has several health benefits, but no study to date has examined the effects of greenness on metabolic syndrome (MetS). We aimed to assess associations between residential greenness and MetS prevalence in China, and to explore whether air pollution and physical activity mediated any observed associations.

METHODS

We analyzed data from 15,477 adults who participated in the 33 Communities Chinese Health Study during 2009. We defined MetS according to standard guidelines for Chinese populations. Residential greenness was estimated using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), and the Vegetation Continuous Field (VCF). We used generalized linear mixed models to assess the associations between greenness and MetS, and mediation analyses to explore potential mechanisms underlying the associations.

RESULTS

Higher greenness levels were associated with lower odds of MetS [e.g., for every interquartile range increase of NDVI_500-m, SAVI_500-m, and VCF_500-m, the adjusted odds ratio of MetS was 0.81 (95% confidence interval: 0.70-0.93), 0.80 (95% confidence interval: 0.69-0.93), and 0.91 (95% confidence interval: 0.83-1.00), respectively]. The direction and the magnitude of the associations persisted in several sensitivity analyses. Stratified analyses showed that age and household income modified the associations, with greater effect estimates observed in participants younger than 65 years old or those with higher household income. Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone mediated 2.1-20.3% of the associations between greenness and MetS; no evidence of mediation was observed for physical activity.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest a beneficial association for residential greenness and MetS in Chinese urban dwellers, especially for participants younger than 65 years old and those with higher household income. Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm, nitrogen dioxide and ozone, but not physical activity, may only partially mediate the association.

[Effect of ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted excision verus open surgery for benign phyllodes tumors of breast on postoperative local recurrence]

Objectives: To examine the effect of VAE and open surgery on the postoperativelocal recurrence of benign phyllodes tumors of breast and to investigate the clinical efficacy of VAE in the treatment of benign phyllodes tumors. Methods: The clinical data of 128 patients with benign phyllodes tumors of breast admitted to the Guangdong Women and Children Hospital from January 2013 to January 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients were female, aged (37.7±9.1) years (range: 16 to 56 years). Eighty patients underwent ultrasound-guided VAE (minimally invasive group) and 48 patients underwent open surgery (open group). The t-test, χ(2) test or Fisher exact probability method were used to compare the clinical characteristics of the two groups of patients. Logistic regression was used to analyze the prognostic factors of postoperative local recurrence. Results: The maximum diameter of tumor in the minimally invasive group was smaller than that in the open group ((20.6±7.4) mm vs. (42.0±2.0) mm, t=-7.173, P=0.000). The follow-up time was (36.4±1.8) months (range: 12 to 71 months). There were 7 cases of local recurrences during the follow-up period. The local recurrence rates in the minimally invasive and open groups were 5.0% (4/80) and 6.3% (3/48). The results of multivariate analysis showed that the maximum tumor diameter of 25 mm was an independent prognosis factor for postoperativelocal recurrence (OR=0.122, 95%CI: 0.016 to 0.901, P=0.039). While surgical procedure, age, menopausal status and history of fibroadenomas in the ipsilateral breast is not an independent prognostic factor for postoperative local recurrence. In the minimally invasive surgery group, the local recurrence rates were 2.9% (2/69) and 2/11 in patients with tumor maximum diameters<25 mm and ≥25 mm, respectively. Conclusions: Local recurrence of breast benign phyllodes tumors is closely related to the tumor size. For patients with tumor diameter<25 mm, the postoperative local recurrence rate of VAE is low, which can be used in clinical practice. Intraoperative complete resection to achieve a negative surgical margin should be guaranteed to avoid local recurrence.

Association between community greenness and obesity in urban-dwelling Chinese adults

Living in greener places may protect against obesity, but epidemiological evidence is inconsistent and mainly comes from developed nations. We aimed to investigate the association between greenness and obesity in Chinese adults and to assess air pollution and physical activity as mediators of the association. We recruited 24,845 adults from the 33 Communities Chinese Health Study in 2009. Central and peripheral obesity were defined by waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI), respectively, based on international obesity standards. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used to quantify community greenness. Two-level logistic and generalized linear mixed regression models were used to evaluate the association between NDVI and obesity, and a conditional mediation analysis was used also performed. In the adjusted models, an interquartile range increase in NDVI_500-m was significantly associated with lower odds of peripheral 0.80 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.74-0.87) and central obesity 0.88 (95% CI: 0.83-0.93). Higher NDVI values were also significantly associated with lower BMI. Age, gender, and household income significantly modified associations between greenness and obesity, with stronger associations among women, older participants, and participants with lower household incomes. Air pollution mediated 2.1-20.8% of the greenness-obesity associations, but no mediating effects were observed for physical activity. In summary, higher community greenness level was associated with lower odds of central and peripheral obesity, especially among women, older participants, and those with lower household incomes. These associations were partially mediated by air pollutants. Future well-designed longitudinal studies are needed to confirm our findings.

P966 Impact of systolic dysfunction and elevated left ventricular end diastolic pressure on three years clinical outcome in patients with atrial fibrillation

Background

Systolic and diastolic dysfunction is related with adverse clinical outcomes in the patients with sinus rhythm. Purpose: The aim of this study is to clarify the prognostic significance of both systolic and diastolic dysfunction in the patients with chronic persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods: A total of 114 consecutive patients who have chronic persistent AF. Whole patients were divided into 2 groups according to left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF): those with an LVEF &lt; 50 (n = 24) (REF) and those with an LVEF ≥ 50 (n = 90) (PEF). And PEF group was also divided into two groups according to left ventricular end diastolic filling pressure (LVEDP): patients with LVEDP ≥ 15 mmHg (n = 38) and those with &lt; 15 mmHg (n = 52). Results: 3-year clinical outcomes were compared between each groups (PEF groups vs. REF groups and LVEDP ≥ 15 mmHg vs LVEDP &lt; 15 mmHg). The incidence of death, hospitalization, stroke, bleeding, AF with rapid ventricular rhythm (RVR) and heart failure (HF) hospitalization were similar PEF and REF group. However, during 3-year follow up period, the incidence of HF hospitalization (29.2% vs 8.9%, p &lt; 0.02) and AF with RVR (20.8% vs 3.3%, p &lt; 0.01) were frequent in REF group compared with PEF group. In multivariate analysis, REF is an only predictor of HF hospitalization (Table 1). Conclusion: During 3-year follow up period, systolic dysfunction is an important predictor of HF hospitalization in AF patients. However, elevated LVEDP is not related with 3-year adverse clinical outcomes in AF patients without systolic dysfunction.

P38 Developing a model for predicting in-hospital death in patients with the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation

Background

The objective of this study was to develop a predicting model for estimating the odds of in-hospital death in the patients who receive extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Methods

Adult patients who received ECMO for a variety of etiologies in our National University Hospital from 2005 and 2016 were included. The demographic, anthropometric, hemodynamic, and laboratory data when ECMO was instituted were recorded for each individual. A logistic regression model was applied to find the risk variables that were independently associated with in-hospital mortality. The predicted probability derived from the model was used to plot a receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) curve, and area under curve (AUC) was found to represent the differentiating capacity of this approach.

Results

A total of 919 patients (659 men and 260 women) were included in the analysis. The mean age was 53.7[SD 15.9] years. The analysis showed that age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.018, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.008-1.028 per year), blood urea nitrogen (1.008 [1.001-1.014] per mg/dL), use of inotropic agent in terms of inotropic equivalent (1.007 [1.002-1.013]), the presence of cardiogenic shock (1.910 [1.097-3.327]), and the need of hemodialysis (2.262 [1.304-3.926]) were positively associated with mortality. In addition, body surface area (OR: 0.414 [0.204-0.840] per square meter), systolic blood pressure (0.995 [0.990-0.999] per mmHg), Glasgow Coma Scale (0.928 [0.899-0.957] per unit), pH value (0.395 [0.158-0.988] for each unit), and urine output (OR: 0.974 [0.964-0.985] per dL) were negatively associated with the probability of in-hospital death. The AUC in ROC analysis was 0.754 (95% CI: 0.722-0.787).

Conclusion

The predicting model that used a simple set of physiological parameters could substantially discriminate whether the patients receiving ECMO could survive the in-hospital course. Further studies are needed to examine why false positive and false negative predictions took place.

Greenness around schools associated with lower risk of hypertension among children: Findings from the Seven Northeastern Cities Study in China

Evidence suggests that residential greenness may be protective of high blood pressure, but there is scarcity of evidence on the associations between greenness around schools and blood pressure among children. We aimed to investigate this association in China. Our study included 9354 children from 62 schools in the Seven Northeastern Cities Study. Greenness around each child's school was measured by NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and SAVI (Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index). Particulate matter ≤ 1 μm (PM₁) concentrations were estimated by spatiotemporal models and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) concentrations were collected from air monitoring stations. Associations between greenness and blood pressure were determined by generalized linear and logistic mixed-effect models. Mediation by air pollution was assessed using mediation analysis. Higher greenness was consistently associated with lower blood pressure. An increase of 0.1 in NDVI corresponded to a reduction in SBP of 1.39 mmHg (95% CI: 1.86, -0.93) and lower odds of hypertension (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.69, 0.82). Stronger associations were observed in children with higher BMI. Ambient PM₁ and NO₂ mediated 33.0% and 10.9% of the association between greenness and SBP, respectively. In summary, greater greenness near schools had a beneficial effect on blood pressure, particularly in overweight or obese children in China. The associations might be partially mediated by air pollution. These results might have implications for policy makers to incorporate more green space for both aesthetic and health benefits.

Ambient Airborne Particulates of Diameter ≤1 μm, a Leading Contributor to the Association Between Ambient Airborne Particulates of Diameter ≤2.5 μm and Children's Blood Pressure

Evidence on the associations between airborne particulates of diameter ≤1 μm (PM₁) and airborne particulates of diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM_2.5) and childhood blood pressure (BP) is scarce. To help to address this literature gap, we conducted a study to explore the associations in Chinese children. Between 2012 and 2013, we recruited 9354 children, aged 5 to 17 years, from 62 schools in 7 northeastern Chinese cities. We measured their BP with a mercury sphygmomanometer. We used a spatiotemporal model to estimate daily ambient PM₁ and PM_2.5 exposures, which we assigned to participants' home addresses. Associations between particulate matter exposure and BP were evaluated with generalized linear mixed regression models. The findings indicated that exposure to each 10 mg/m³ greater PM₁ was significantly associated with 2.56 mm Hg (95% CI, 1.47-3.65) higher systolic BP and 61% greater odds for hypertension (odds ratio=1.61 [95% CI, 1.18-2.18]). PM₁ appears to play an important role in associations reported between PM_2.5 exposure and BP, and we found that the ambient PM₁/PM_2.5 ratio (range, 0.80-0.96) was associated with BP and with hypertension. Age and body weight modified associations between air pollutants and BP (P<0.01), with stronger associations among younger (aged ≤11 years) and overweight/obese children. This study provides the first evidence that long-term exposure to PM₁ is associated with hypertension in children, and that PM₁ might be a leading contributor to the hypertensive effect of PM_2.5. Researchers and policy makers should pay closer attention to the potential health impacts of PM₁.

Association Between Greenness Surrounding Schools and Kindergartens and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children in China

IMPORTANCE

Few studies have investigated the association between greenness and childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the association between greenness surrounding schools or kindergartens and symptoms of ADHD in children.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS

This population-based cross-sectional study was performed between April 2012 and January 2013 in 7 cities in northeastern China. This analysis included 59 754 children (aged 2-17 years) from 94 schools and kindergartens, who had resided in the study area for 2 years or longer. Data were analyzed from April 15, 2019, to October 10, 2019.

EXPOSURES

Greenness surrounding each child's school or kindergarten was estimated using 2 satellite image-derived vegetation indexes: the normalized difference vegetation index and the soil-adjusted vegetation index.

MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition) scales were used to measure ADHD symptoms (9 inattention symptoms and 9 hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms). Parents or guardians rated the frequency of each of 18 ADHD symptoms during the preceding 6 months. Children with 6 or more symptoms of either inattention or hyperactivity-impulsivity were defined as having ADHD symptoms. Generalized linear mixed models were applied to estimate the association between greenness and ADHD symptoms.

RESULTS

The mean (SD) age of the 59 754 study participants was 10.3 (3.6) years, and 29 494 (49.4%) were girls. A total of 2566 participants (4.3%) had ADHD symptoms. Greenness levels differed substantially across schools and kindergartens. The normalized difference vegetation index within 500 m of a school or kindergarten ranged from -0.09 to 0.77. Greater greenness levels were associated with lower odds of ADHD symptoms. In covariate-adjusted models, a 0.1-unit increase in normalized difference vegetation index or soil-adjusted vegetation index within 500 m of a school or kindergarten was significantly associated with lower odds of ADHD symptoms (odds ratios, 0.87 [95% CI, 0.83-0.91] and 0.80 [95% CI, 0.74-0.86], respectively; P < .001 for both). The associations were robust in a series of sensitivity analyses.

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE

These findings suggest that there may be a beneficial association between school-based greenness and ADHD symptoms in Chinese children. Future longitudinal and mechanistic studies are needed to confirm the findings of this cross-sectional analysis and further explore potential mechanisms of this association.

Pharmacokinetics of the recombinant ovine interferon-tau in lambs

In the current study, twenty lambs, aged 4 months, half male and half female, were classified into four groups, with five in each group. The experimental three groups of lambs were given intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SC) administrations of recombinant ovine interferon-τ (roIFN-τ). The fourth group (normal control) of lambs was given normal saline injections in the same way. After administrations, blood samples were collected from the tested animals at different time points post injection, and the serum titers of roIFN-τ were measured using cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition bioassay. The results of calculating pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters using DAS software showed that the PK characteristics of roIFN-τ through IV injection conformed to the two-compartment open model, whose half-life of distribution phases (T1/2α) was 0.33±0.034 h and the elimination half-life(T1/2β) was 5.01±0.24 h. However, the PK features of IM injection and SC injection of roIFN-τ conformed to the one compartment open model, whose Tmax were 3.11±0.26 h and 4.83±0.43 h, respectively, together with an elimination half life(T1/2β) of 9.11±0.76 h and 7. 43±0.58 h, and an absorption half-life (T1/2k(a)) of 1.13±0.31 h and 1.85±0.40 h, respectively. The bioavailability of roIFN-τ after IM administration reaches 73.57%, which is greater than that of SC administration (53.43%). These results indicate that the drug administration effect can be preferably obtained following a single dose IM administration of the roIFN-τ aqueous preparation. This study will facilitate the clinical application of roIFN-τ as a potential antiviral agent in future work.

[Teleost Type 2 Interleukin-1 Receptor (IL-1R2) from the Spotted Halibut (Verasper variegatus): 3D Structure and a Role in Immune Response]

The type 2 interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R2) is one of natural IL-1β singling inhibitors in mammals. We cloned and sequenced the IL-1R2 gene in V. variegatus (VvIL-1R2). The phylogenetic analysis showed that the molecular structure VvIL-1R2 is similar to that of its orthologues in other vertebrates. The expression levels of VvIL-1R2 are relatively high in the peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs), gill, and spleen. In addition, peculiar expression patterns for his molecule were detected at various developmental stages, implying that in flatfishes the IL-1R2 may have be important for embryonic development and metamorphosis. In PBLs, the treatment with pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) induced a significant and rapid up-regulation of VvIL-1R2, pointing at its involvement in the immune responses against bacterial and viral pathogens.

[Effect of aerobic exercise and resistance exercise in improving non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a randomized controlled trial]

Objective: To investigate the effect of dietary control combined with different exercise modes on plasma vaspin, irisin, and metabolic parameters in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) through a randomized open parallel-controlled study. Methods: The patients aged 30-65 years who visited Tianjin Third Central Hospital from January 2013 to December 2014 and were diagnosed with NAFLD by liver ultrasound and fat content determination were screening, and 474 patients were enrolled in this randomized controlled trial and divided into aerobic exercise group, resistance exercise group, and control group. All patients received dietary intervention. The three groups were compared in terms of biochemical parameters, fat content, NFS score, energy metabolic parameters, body composition index, and levels of vaspin and irisin at baseline and after 6 months of intervention. SPSS 19.0 was used for statistical analysis. The t-test, the Mann-Whitney U test, the chi-square test, and an analysis of variance were used for comparison between groups. The multiple imputation method was used for missing data, and the results were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. Results: There were no significant differences in age, sex, anthropometrical parameters, and biochemical parameters between the three groups at baseline. Compared with dietary control alone, aerobic exercise and resistance exercise helped to achieve significant reductions in waist circumference, diastolic pressure, percentage of body fat, volatile fatty acid, fasting blood glucose, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, free fatty acid, uric acid, alanine aminotransferase, and liver fat content after 6 months of intervention (P < 0.05). The aerobic exercise group had a significant increase in non-protein respiratory quotient and significant reductions in body mass index and aspartate aminotransferase after intervention, as well as a significant increase in resting energy expenditure and significant reductions in abdominal fat ratio and total cholesterol after 6 months of resistance exercise (P < 0.05). The aerobic exercise group and the resistance exercise group had a significant reduction in vaspin and a significant increase in irisin after intervention (P < 0.05), and the resistance exercise group had significantly greater changes in these two adipokines than the aerobic exercise group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Exercise therapy is an effective method for the treatment of metabolism-associated diseases, and a combination of resistance and aerobic exercises is more reasonable and effective in clinical practice. As a relatively safe exercise mode, resistance exercise can also effectively improve the metabolic state of NAFLD patients.

Synthesis of hard magnetic NdFeB composite particles by recycling the waste using microwave assisted auto-combustion and reduction method

The present work provides a facile and energy-saving approach to recycle Nd-Fe-B wastes. Employing the severely oxidized and contaminated sintered Nd-Fe-B scraps as the raw materials, sub-micro sized Nd-Fe-B/α-Fe composite magnetic powders were successfully synthesized by microwave assisted auto-combustion method followed by a reduction diffusion process. In details, the waste magnets were dissolved in HNO₃ solution and both the rare earth oxides and iron oxide were obtained by auto-combustion approach with the help of microwave heating. These oxides were then reduced to achieve Nd-Fe-B alloys with the reducing agent CaH₂. To modify the composition of the final product, Nd(NO₃)₃·6H₂O and H₃BO₃ were added during dissolving and consequently three compositions of the final products were obtained. TEM results demonstrate that the sizes of α-Fe and Nd₂Fe₁₄B grains are below 10 nm and 20 nm, respectively. The magnetic properties of the composite powders obtained from the wastes in this study are comparable to those obtained by other methods using pure reagents. The room temperature coercivity of as-synthesized Nd₁₅Fe₇₇B₈ is higher than 400 kA/m. In addition, an appropriate mass ratio of CaH₂ to Nd-Fe-B oxides is required in order to obtain good magnetic properties.

[Analysis on the epidemic features of male HIV-infected and AIDS patients by sexual transmission in Shandong Province from 2007 to 2016]

Objective: To analyze the epidemic features of male HIV-infected and AIDS patients by sexual transmission in Shandong Province. Methods: Data on HIV-infected people and AIDS patients (HIV/AIDS) were derived from HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Response Information Management System. To analysis the epidemiological data of male HIV/AIDS by sexual transmission reported in Shandong Province from 1997 to 2016. Results: A total of 8 584 HIV/AIDS were reported by heterosexual transmission or homosexual transmission from 2007 to 2016. 2 421 cases were reported by heterosexual transmission and 6 163 cases were reported by homosexual transmission. Among cases infected by heterosexual transmission. The average age of cases infected by heterosexual transmission was (38.13±12.39) and (31.62±10.22) among cases who infected by homosexual transmission (t=24.95, P<0.001). 84 cases were reported by homosexual transmission and 138 cases by heterosexual transmission from 2007 to 2008, and 6 079 cases were reported by homosexual transmission and 2 283 cases by heterosexual transmission from 2009 to 2016. A total of 770 cases were dead after reported. Among the dead cases, 337 cases were infected by homosexual transmission and 433 cases by heterosexual transmission (χ(2)=328.21, P<0.001). 61.4% of the dead cases by heterosexual transmission were no longer than 6 months after reported and 54.3% in homosexual transmission (χ(2)=3.96, P=0.047). Conclusion: Homosexual transmission has been the main transmission of HIV/AIDS in Shandong Province. Epidemiological features and social demographic characteristics of each sexual transmission were different. As part of HIV cases developed to death in 6 months.

Improving the performance of optical antenna for optical phased arrays through high-contrast grating structure on SOI substrate

A novel optical antenna for optical phased arrays is proposed and simulated. A high-contrast grating structure is used to achieve extremely efficient emission. The emission efficiency is as high as 93.94% at 1.55 μm, which exceeds 50% in a range of wavelength from 1.48 μm to 1.62 μm. The antenna can achieve a perfect grating lobe suppression with background suppression of 28.4 dB when the phase difference between adjacent waveguides is 0. A 16-wire optical phased array can easily achieve a scan range of ± 22.8° × 20.2° with a beam width of 2.4° × 2.5°, by employing the optical antenna proposed.
