Abstract
These guidelines are an update of those made in 2007 at the request of the French Society of Infectious Diseases (SPILF, Société de Pathologie Infectieuse de Langue Française). They are intended for use by all healthcare professionals caring for patients with disco-vertebral infection (DVI) on spine, whether native or instrumented. They include evidence and opinion-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of patients with DVI. ESR, PCT and scintigraphy, antibiotic therapy without microorganism identification (except for emergency situations), therapy longer than 6 weeks if the DVI is not complicated, contraindication for spinal osteosynthesis in a septic context, and prolonged dorsal decubitus are no longer to be done in DVI management. MRI study must include exploration of the entire spine with at least 2 orthogonal planes for the affected level(s). Several disco-vertebral samples must be performed if blood cultures are negative. Short, adapted treatment and directly oral antibiotherapy or early switch from intravenous to oral antibiotherapy are recommended. Consultation of a spine specialist should be requested to evaluate spinal stability. Early lifting of patients is recommended.

Abstract
Digital pathology can be thought of as a model composed of 3 main elements; classification algorithm, Graphical User Interface (GUI) and the pathologists. Currently there is only a one way interaction from the classification algorithm to the pathologist. This paper, proposes an additional backward path which is a new feedback-based method, aimed to improve the performance of the classification algorithms by utilizing the feedback of the pathologists. The GUI developed for this purpose, is aimed to be simple and adaptive to different classification algorithms. The method showed significant improvement in the classification performance of the applied Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm. The 25% quantile of the probability score of the predictions increased from 0.48 to 0.89 and the median of the data increased from 0.95 to 0.99.

Abstract
Recombinant calreticulin from Trypanosoma cruzi (rTcCalr), the parasite responsible for Chagas' disease, binds to Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (CTVT) cells from primary cultures and to a canine mammary carcinoma cell line. A Complement-binding assay indicated that interaction of the first component C1q with these tumor cells operated independently of the rTcCalr-presence. This apparent independence could be explained by the important structural similarities that exist among rTcCarl, endogenous normal canine and/or mutated calreticulins present in several types of cancer. In phagocytosis assays, tumor cells treated with rTcCalr were readily engulfed by macrophages and, co-cultured with DCs, accelerated their maturation. In addition, DCs maturation, induced by tumor cells co-cultured with rTcCalr, activated T cells more efficiently than DCs, treated or not with LPS. In an apparent paradox, a decrease in MHC Class I expression was observed when these tumor cells were co-cultivated with rTcCalr. This decrease may be related to a down regulation signaling promoting the rescue of MHC I. Possibly, these in vitro assays may be valid correlates of in vivo sceneries. Based on these results, we propose that rTcCalr improves in vitro the immunogenicity of two widely different tumor cell lines, thus suggesting that the interesting properties of rTcCalr to boost immune responses warrant future studies.

Abstract
Robotic minimally invasive surgery (RMIS) has played an important role in the last decades. In traditional surgery, surgeons rely on palpation using their hands. However, during RMIS, surgeons use the visual-haptics technique to compensate the missing sense of touch. Various sensors have been widely used to retrieve this natural sense, but there are still issues like integration, costs, sterilization and the small sensing area that prevent such approaches from being applied. A new method based on acoustic emission has been recently proposed for acquiring audio information from tool-tissue interaction during minimally invasive procedures that provide user guidance feedback. In this work the concept was adapted for acquiring audio information from a RMIS grasper and a first proof of concept is presented. Interactions of the grasper with various artificial and biological texture samples were recorded and analyzed using advanced signal processing and a clear correlation between audio spectral components and the tested texture were identified.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Stent retriever-assisted thrombectomy promotes high recanalization rates in acute ischemic stroke. Nevertheless, complications and failures occur in more than 10% of procedures; hence, there is a need for further investigation. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 144 patients with ischemic stroke presenting with large-vessel occlusion were prospectively included. Patients were treated with stent retriever-assisted thrombectomy ± IV fibrinolysis. Baseline clinical and imaging characteristics were incorporated in univariate and multivariate analyses. Predictors of recanalization failure (TICI 0, 1, 2a), and of embolic and hemorrhagic complications were reported. The relationship between complication occurrence and periprocedural mortality rate was studied. RESULTS Median age was 69.5 years, and median NIHSS score was 18 at presentation. Fifty patients (34.7%) received stand-alone thrombectomy, and 94 (65.3%) received combined therapy. The procedural failure rate was 13.9%. Embolic complications were recorded in 12.5% and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage in 7.6%. The overall rate of failure, complications, and/or death was 39.6%. The perioperative mortality rate was 18.4% in the overall cohort but was higher in cases of failure (45%; P = .003), embolic complications (38.9%; P = .0176), symptomatic intracranial hemorrhages (45.5%; P = .0236), and intracranial stenosis (50%; P = .0176). Concomitant fibrinolytic therapy did not influence the rate of recanalization or embolic complication, or the intracranial hemorrhage rate. Age was the only significant predictive factor of intracranial hemorrhage (P = .043). CONCLUSIONS The rate of perioperative mortality was significantly increased in cases of embolic and hemorrhagic complications, as well as in cases of failure and underlying intracranial stenoses. Adjunctive fibrinolytic therapy did not improve the recanalization rate or collateral embolic complication rate. The rate of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage was not increased in cases of combined treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Ureterocele is an uncommon congenital urinary tract malformation, which consists in a cystic dilation of the vesical portion of the ureter. We present a rare case of ureterocele, reviewing the most important aspects and characteristics that make it so unusual. CASE Seven year old male admitted for hematuria in the context of afebrile urinary tract infection, the ultrasound revealed a right hydroureteronephrosis (HUN) in a single collecting system and a voiding cystourethogram (VCUG) showed a right ureterocele. A cystoscopy demonstrated the presence of a bilateral orthotopicureterocele in a single collecting system. The patient underwent an endoscopic incision in order to drain the hydronephrotic system. After a month, while performing a check up using ultrasound, we could observe an important reduction in the right HUN, however, it also was acknowledged the presence of dilation of the left distal ureter, reason why it was decided to puncture the left ureterocele. COMMENTS We present an unusual case: male with a bilateral orthotopicureterocele in a single collecting system and its clinical management. Its particularity is discussed.

Abstract
A clinical case of a female patient with a black spot on the palm of her left hand is presented. The infection was due to a black fungus identified as Hortaea werneckii, the aetiological agent of tinea nigra palmaris. This infection can be easily diagnosed and it is important to establish the differential diagnosis from other skin pathologies. Normally, the treatment has a successful outcome. In this case, the patient was treated with econazole locally applied during one month, with complete remission of the lesions. In conclusion, the early diagnosis of this disease is very important since the mycology procedures are fast and non-invasive and cure is obtained with local treatment.

Abstract
In the present study, we investigated in rats the effect of third ventricle injections of 1-(3-chlorophenyl)piperazine (mCPP), a 5-HT(2) receptor agonist, on water intake induced by three different physiological stimuli: fluid deprivation, acute salt load and hypovolemia. Injections of mCPP in the doses of 80 and 160 nmol/rat were able to decrease water intake in all three conditions studied. Third ventricle injections of mCPP (160 nmol/rat) were no longer able to diminish water intake in the groups of rats pretreated with central injections of an equimolar amount of (+)-cis-4,5,7a,8,9,10,11,11a-octahydro-7H-10-methylindolo[1,7-bc][2,6]-naphthyridine (SDZ SER 082), a selective 5-HT(2B/2C) antagonist. The central administration of mCPP (160 nmol/rat) was not able to modify the intake of a 0.1% saccharin solution. It is suggested that the central activation of a 5-HT(2B/2C) component is able to impair the drive for water intake induced by the physiological stimuli represented by fluid deprivation, acute salt load and hypovolemia. This effect seems not to be consequent on a general nonspecific central nervous system depression or on a locomotor deficit, because saccharin intake is not affected by third ventricle injections of mCPP.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of central 5-HT3 receptors on the control of blood glucose in stressed and non-stressed rats in both fasted and fed states. Adult Wistar male rats had each their third ventricle cannulated 7 days before the experiments. Injections of m-CPBG, a selective 5-HT3 receptor agonist, induced a significant increase in blood glucose in non-stressed rats in both fasted and in fed states. The same procedure was unable to modify stress-induced hyperglycemia. The hyperglycemic effect of m-CPBG central administration was blocked by pretreatment with ondansetron, a specific 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, indicating that the effects here obtained with m-CPBG were a result of its interaction with 5-HT3 receptors. Third ventricle injections of ondansetron alone were not able to modify blood glucose in non-stressed animals and did not change the hyperglycemic responses observed after immobilization stress. We conclude that pharmacological activation of the central 5-HT3 receptor induces a hyperglycemic effect in non-stressed animals.

Abstract
The spectrum of heterotopic calcification or ossification is expanding because of the reports of several kindreds with calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, apatite deposition disease, and others with less common syndromes associated with extracellular matrix calcification, such as fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva and related syndromes. Genomic DNA studies in both humans and mice provide a shortcut to understanding the genetic basis of promotion and prevention of ECM calcification. Mutation in the COL2A1 gene has been identified in one family with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia and calcium pyrophosphate and apatite crystalline deposits. In another kindred with precocious osteoarthritis without spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, the phenotype was linked to markers of chromosome 8. In four other kindreds, the phenotypes were linked to an area of chromosome 5p. Two genes located in this region, which are expressed in articular cartilage, are being investigated as possible calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease genes. The results of linkage studies in three kindreds with articular/periarticular ADD with the COL2A1 gene were noninformative. Two different mouse mutations, the ank/ank and the ttw/ttw mice, are associated with intra-articular and ligament apatite deposits caused by a decrease in extracellular pyrophosphate concentrations, mimicking human arthritis caused by apatite deposition disease. Mutations in the matrix GLA protein, both in mice and in humans, are also associated with vascular and articular calcification. These mouse mutations provide cutting-edge information in the investigation of the mechanisms of apatite deposition in humans.

Abstract
Pentaammineruthenium moves on ambidentate nitrogen heterocycles by both rotation and linkage isomerization, which may affect the biological activity of potential ruthenium metallopharmaceuticals. The rapid rotation rates of [(NH3)5RuIII] coordinated to the exocyclic nitrogens of isocytosine (ICyt) and 6-methylisocytosine (6MeICyt) have been determined by 1H NMR. Since these rotamers can be stabilized by hydrogen bonding between the coordinated ammines and the N1 and N3 endocyclic nitrogens, rotamerization is under pH control. Spectrophotometrically (UV-vis) measured pKa values for the two endocyclic sites for the ICyt complex are 2.78 and 9.98, and for 6MeICyt are 3.06 and 10.21, which are probably weighted averages for ionization from N3 and N1, respectively. Activation parameters for the rotamerizations were determined by variable-temperature NMR at pKa1 < pH < pKa2 for the complexes with (ICyt-kappa N2)-, (6MeICyt kappa N2)-, and 2AmPym kappa N2. For [(6MeICyt kappa N2)(-)-(NH3)5RuIII]2+, delta H* = 1.6 kcal/mol, delta S* = -37 cal/mol K, and Ea = 2.2 kcal/mol. Due to strong RuIII-N pi-bonding, the activation enthalpies are approximately 10 kcal lower than the expected values for the free ligands. Rotameric structure is correlated with pKa values, pH-dependent reduction potentials, and 1H NMR parameters. Linkage isomers of [(2AmPym)(NH3)5Ru]n+ are reported in which RuII is coordinated to the endocyclic nitrogen (N1) and RuIII to the exocyclic nitrogen (N2). The rate constant for the kappa N2-->kappa N1 isomerization as part of an ECE mechanism is 3.9 s-1 at pH 3. The pH dependence of the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of [(2AmPym kappa N1)(NH3)5Ru]2+ is determined.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of acute third ventricle injections of two different 5-HT(4) receptor antagonists, GR 113808 and SB 204070, on water intake in different situations. Injections of 80 nmol/rat of both GR 113808 and SB 204070 were unable to modify water intake in normohydrated rats. Pretreatment with GR 113808 (40 and 80 nmol/rat) and SB 204070 (80 and 160 nmol/rat) blunted water intake after third ventricle injections of angiotensin II (9.6 pmol/rat) compared to saline-pretreated controls. Pretreatment with 80 nmol/rat of both antagonists potentiated drinking induced by third ventricle injections of carbachol (11.0 nmol/rat) compared to saline-pretreated control. In all doses employed, none of the compounds was able to modify water intake in dehydrated rats. A separate control test using one-bottle taste aversion paradigm indicated that the reduction in water intake observed in some of the present experiments could not be attributed to a drug-induced malaise. It is suggested that central 5-HT(4) receptors exert a dualistic role on the control of water intake potentiating angiotensin II-induced drinking and inhibiting thirst induced by central cholinergic activation

Abstract
We have demonstrated that central administration of zinc in minute amounts induces a significant antidipsogenic action in dehydrated rats as well as in rats under central cholinergic and angiotensinergic stimulation. Here we show that acute third ventricle injections of zinc also block water intake induced by central ss-adrenergic stimulation in Wistar rats (190-250 g). Central inhibition of opioid pathways by naloxone reverses the zinc-induced antidipsogenic effect in dehydrated rats. After 120 min, rats receiving third ventricle injections of isoproterenol (160 nmol/rat) exhibited a significant increase in water intake (5.78 +/- 0.54 ml/100 g body weight) compared to saline-treated controls (0.15 +/- 0.07 ml/100 g body weight). Pretreatment with zinc (3.0, 30.0 and 300.0 pmol/rat, 45 min before isoproterenol injection) blocked water intake in a dose-dependent way. At the highest dose employed a complete blockade was demonstrable (0.54 +/- 0.2 ml/100 g body weight). After 120 min, control (NaAc-treated) dehydrated rats, as expected, exhibited a high water intake (7.36 +/- 0.39 ml/100 g body weight). Central administration of zinc blocked this response (2.5 +/- 0.77 ml/100 g body weight). Naloxone pretreatment (82.5 nmol/rat, 30 min before zinc administration) reverted the water intake to the high levels observed in zinc-free dehydrated animals (7.04 +/- 0.56 ml/100 g body weight). These data indicate that zinc is able to block water intake induced by central ss-adrenergic stimulation and that zinc-induced blockade of water intake in dehydrated rats may be, at least in part, due to stimulation of central opioid peptides.

Abstract
We have demonstrated that acute third ventricle injections of lead acetate (PbAc) exert a powerful antidipsogenic effect and induce a significant increase in renal sodium excretion. In the present study we confirm the antidipsogenic effect of lead and demonstrate that central administration of this metal, in minute amounts, significantly reduces salt intake both during dehydration and after central angiotensinergic stimulation. Adult male Wistar rats had the third ventricle cannulated seven days before the experiments. During this period they had free access to distilled water and hypertonic saline solution (1.5%). After a 24-h period of fluid deprivation, experimental animals received third ventricle injections of PbAc (0.3, N = 8 and 3.0 nmol/rat, N = 14) while controls received sodium acetate (NaAc; 3.0 nmol/rat, N = 10). Rats treated with PbAc at the highest dose showed a significant reduction (P<0.05) both in water and hypertonic saline intake when compared to controls. When the effect of lead administration on angiotensin II-induced water and salt intake was studied, normohydrated animals received third ventricle injections of angiotensin II (9.6 nmol/rat) after pretreatment with 3.0 nmol/rat of PbAc (experimental group, N = 10) or NaAc (controls, N = 8). The group pretreated with PbAc presented a significant reduction (P<0.05) in both water and salt intake compared to controls. Thus, this study confirms the antidipsogenic effect of central lead injections and demonstrates that the presence of lead in the brain exerts a significant inhibition of sodium appetite.

Abstract
Seven patients with peptic ulcer disease had severe scarring of the duodenum, making its closure at the time of gastrectomy difficult. They were managed intraoperatively with proximal duodeno-jejunostomy as a means to avoid the catastrophic complication of disruption of the duodenal stump closure with its consequent peritonitis. The jejunum used for this anastomosis was an extension of the long limb of a Roux en Y which is brought up to perform the gastrojejunostomy. The end to end duodeno-jejunostomy is performed proximal to a side to side gastrojejunostomy, hence the name, proximal duodeno Jejunostomy. These seven patients had no unexpected immediate postoperative complications during the thirty days following surgery and were all discharged from the hospital well. During the same three and a half year period twenty five other patients were submitted to gastrectomy and had two duodenal stump leaks after conventional closures. One patient died and the other survived after prolonged intensive care stay. These differences were not statistically significant. These duodenojejunostomies are non-functional anastomoses and should consequently stricture, but in one patient it remained open and he developed bile reflux gastritis in spite of the Roux en Y gastrojejunostomy constructed to avoid this complication. These anastomoses should be constructed as stenotic as possible.

Abstract
We explored the use of Testsimplet (TS) in synovial fluid (SF) analysis. TS is a glass slide coated with a dry mixture of methylene blue and cresyl violet, which in contact with one drop of SF provides a stained fresh preparation. We applied the TS to the study of 159 SFs of patients with different rheumatic diseases. In those SFs of patients with crystal-associated diseases, the crystal search was performed both on unstained preparations and with TS. TS was as good as the Wright's and Papanicolaou stain in characterizing SF cells, lupus erythematosus cells, and detection of occasional bacteria. TS allowed a better visualization of Reiter's cells, cartilage fragments, synovial villi, fat droplets, and fibrin. Crystals were identified in every TS of those patients with crystal-associated diseases. TS is a rapid and reproducible method of SF supravital staining. Crystals are well preserved for simultaneous examination with compensated polarized light.

Abstract
Chromatography of aspartate transcarbamoylase from Escherichia coli on agarose-immobilized dyes and alkyl-agaroses of differing carbon length were investigated. The bacterial aspartate transcarbamoylase was bound by Procoin red HE3B-agarose and Cibacron blue F3GA-agarose nearly completely under the conditions chosen relative to other agarose-coupled dyes. The aspartate transcarbamoylase holoenzyme was eluted from the Procion red HE3B-agarose slightly later than from the Cibacron blue F3GA-agarose during salt gradient elution. The catalytic trimer of the enzyme as well as its regulatory dimer were eluted by a lower salt concentration from both dye-agarose gels than the concentration required to elute the holoenzyme. The interaction of the catalytic trimer with the Procion red HE3B-agarose and Cibacron blue F3GA-agarose gels may be a determinant in the holoenzyme being retained on these resins. Of those alkyl-agaroses tested, the ethyl-, propyl- and hexyl-agarose gels bound the majority of aspartate transcarbamoylase activity. Chromatography of aspartate transcarbamoylase on ethyl-agarose found it to be eluted by a low salt concentration. A purification scheme for relatively small amounts of aspartate transcarbamoylase utilizing Procion red HE3B-agarose and ethyl-agarose is presented. This purification scheme is particularly useful for mutant versions of aspartate transcarbamoylase which cannot be purified by literature procedures.
