Abstract
Koopman and Perron-Frobenius operators for dynamical systems are becoming popular in a number of fields in science recently. Properties of the Koopman operator essentially depend on the choice of function spaces where it acts. Particularly, the case of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs) is drawing increasing attention in data science. In this paper, we give a general framework for Koopman and Perron-Frobenius operators on reproducing kernel Banach spaces (RKBSs). More precisely, we extend basic known properties of these operators from RKHSs to RKBSs and state new results, including symmetry and sparsity concepts, on these operators on RKBS for discrete and continuous time systems.

Abstract
Increasing attention has been paid to cell-based medicines. Many in vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated the efficacy of stem cell transplantation for the regeneration of periodontal tissues over the past 20 years. Although positive evidence has accumulated regarding periodontal regeneration using stem cells, the exact mechanism of tissue regeneration is still largely unknown. This review outlines the practicality and emerging problems of stem cell transplantation therapy for periodontal regeneration. In addition, possible solutions to these problems and cell-free treatment are discussed.

Abstract
A 42-year-old Japanese woman developed an eczematous skin rash around the catheter exit during continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). The same kind of lesion developed around a Scribner shunt exit. Skin biopsy indicated chronic eosinophilic dermatitis. In the patch test she developed an allergic reaction to the silicone rubber catheter but not to the antiseptic solutions. Based on these findings, we concluded that her “eczematous” rash represented an allergic response to silicone rubber in the peritoneal catheter. To this date the literature contains no reports of such a catheter complication in CAPD. Catheter complications in patients on CAPD are mainly infection and mechanical dysfunction such as poor drainage or leaks (I, 2). Eosinophilic dermatitis around the catheter exit caused by the silicone rubber is extremely uncommon (3). As yet no reports have been published concerning this rare catheter complication.

Abstract
Purpose To determine whether there is any difference in the prevalence of acquired cystic disease and malignancy of the kidney in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and hemodialysis. Data Identification Relevant studies published from January 1983 to June 1991 were identified by manual search and MEDLINE search. Study Selection We reviewed the studies in which acquired renal cystic disease and/or renal cell carcinoma developed in patients on CAPD. Data Extraction Details of the prevalence of acquired cystic disease and renal malignancy as a complication of acquired cysts in CAPD patients were tabulated with the duration of treatment. Results Acquired cystic disease was observed in 195 of 425CAPD patients(41.1%), which is comparable to the prevalence of 47.1% (520/1103) seen in hemodialysis patients. The overall prevalence of renal cell carcinoma accompanying acquired cystic disease in this series of CAPD patients was 2 of 375 (0.4%), which is comparable to the prevalence of 1.5% (17/1103) in hemodialysis patients. So far, eight other instances of renal cell carcinoma complicating acquired cystic disease in CAPD patients were described as case reports. Retroperitoneal bleeding due to the rupture of acquired cysts has been reported on a few occasions. Conclusion In this review no differences were detected in the prevalence or severity of acquired renal cystic disease in patients treated with CAPD as compared with those on hemodialysis. Therefore, the incidence of complications associated with acquired cysts may also be the same for the two treatment modalities, although reports on such complications are rare.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of the antiparasitic drug ivermectin on the dung beetles Copris acutidens Motschulsky, Onthophagus bivertex Heyden, O. lenzii Harold and Phelotrupes auratus auratus Motschulsky in Japan. Ivermectin was detected in cattle dung from 1 to 3 or 7 days post-treatment, with a peak at 3 days post-treatment in two pour-on administrations (500 µg kg-1). In C. acutidens, adult survivals and numbers of brood balls were significantly reduced in dung collected at 3 and 7 days post-treatment, and adult emergence rates were significantly decreased in dung collected at 7 and 14 days post-treatment. Feeding activity of C. acutidens was inhibited in dung collected at 3 days post-treatment, but was not significantly different from that seen in control dung at 7 and 14 days post-treatment. In O. bivertex and O. lenzii, there were no effects of ivermectin on adult survival or feeding activities, but the numbers of brood balls of O. bivertex constructed in dung collected at 3 and 7 days post-treatment were significantly lower than observed with control dung. The adult emergence rates of O. bivertex and O. lenzii were significantly reduced in dung collected at 1 to 3 and 1 to 7 days post-treatment, respectively. In P. auratus, there were no effects of ivermectin on adult survival, oviposition, feeding activity, or larval survival (until the third instar) in dung at 3 days post-treatment. The environmental risks affecting the populations of dung beetles in Japan are discussed.

Abstract
Periodontal disease involves the chronic inflammation of tooth supporting periodontal tissues. As the disease progresses, it manifests destruction of periodontal tissues and eventual tooth loss. The regeneration of lost periodontal tissue has been one of the most important subjects in periodontal research. Since their discovery, periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs), have been transplanted into periodontal bony defects to examine their regenerative potential. Periodontal defects were successfully regenerated using PDLSC sheets, which were fabricated by cell sheet engineering in animal models, and for which clinical human trials are underway. To expand the utility of PDLSC sheet, we attempted to construct periodontal tissues around titanium implants with the goal of facilitating the prevention of peri-implantitis. In so doing, we found newly formed cementum-periodontal ligament (PDL) structures on the implant surface. In this mini review, we summarize the literature regarding cell-based periodontal regeneration using PDLSCs, as well as previous trials aimed at forming periodontal tissues around dental implants. Moreover, the recent findings in cementogenesis are reviewed from the perspective of the formation of further stable periodontal attachment structure on dental implant. This mini review aims to summarize the current status of the creation of novel periodontal tissue-bearing dental implants, and to consider its future direction.

Abstract
Effects of the antiparasitic drug eprinomectin were studied on the dung beetles, Onthophagus lenzii Harold and the rare species, Copris ochus Motschulsky by pour-on administrations (500 µg kg-1) in Japan. Eprinomectin was detected in cattle dung from 1 to 7 or 14 days after treatment, with a peak at 1 day after treatment in two experiments. In O. lenzii, adult survivals and numbers of brood balls constructed were significantly reduced in dung from eprinomectin-treated cattle at 1 and 3 days post-treatment in experiment 1, and adult emergence rates were extremely reduced in dung at 1, 3, and 7 days post-treatment. In C. ochus, adult survivals were significantly reduced in dung at 3 days post-treatment (experiment 1), and equivalent levels to the control were restored in dung at 7 and 14 days post-treatment (experiment 2). Numbers of brood balls of C. ochus were nil in dung at 3 days (experiment 1), and significantly reduced in dung at 7 days (experiment 2) post-treatment compared with control. Adult emergence rates of C. ochus were 100 and 71.6% in dung from control cattle in experiments 1 and 2, respectively. However, no oviposition was observed in dung at 3 days post-treatment, and all offspring died at egg or the first instar larval stage in dung from 7 and 14 days post-treatment. Feeding activities of O. lenzii and C. ochus were significantly inhibited in dung from treated cattle at 1-3 days and 3 days post-treatment, respectively, returning to levels of the control at 7 days post-treatment.

Abstract
This large-scale study cross-sectionally examined the periodontal status and prevalence of "red complex" bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Tannerella forsythia) in Japanese adults. A total of 977 participants were enrolled in the study. Probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and bone crest level (BCL) were recorded, and the presence of red complex bacteria in the saliva was examined using polymerase chain reaction. The mean BCL value and the percentage of sites with a PD ≥4 mm or the presence of BOP were significantly higher in older participants. The detection rates of P. gingivalis, T. denticola, and T. forsythia were 46.3%, 76.4%, and 61.1%, respectively. The P. gingivalis detection rate significantly increased with age, while those of T. denticola and T. forsythia were comparably high for all age groups. A close correlation between P. gingivalis and the percentage of sites with PD ≥4 mm was indicated by nonlinear canonical correlation analysis. Current smokers exhibited a more advanced disease condition and a significantly higher P. gingivalis detection rate than non-smokers. In conclusion, periodontal condition worsens with age, and P. gingivalis appears to be the red complex bacterium most closely associated with periodontitis.

Abstract
Background Periodontitis results in the destruction of tooth-supporting periodontal tissues and does not have the ability to heal spontaneously. Various approaches have been introduced to regenerate periodontal tissues; however, these approaches have limited efficacy for treating severe defects. Cytotherapies combine stem cell biology and tissue engineering to form a promising approach for overcoming these limitations. In this study, we isolated periodontal ligament (PDL)-derived cells from patients and created cell sheets with “Cell Sheet Engineering Technology”, using temperature responsive culture dishes, in which all the cultured cells can be harvested as an intact transplantable cell sheet by reducing the temperature of the culture dish. Subsequently, the safety and efficacy of autologous PDL-derived cell sheets were evaluated in a clinical setting. Methods A single-arm and single-institute clinical study was performed to verify the safety and efficacy of autologous PDL-derived cell sheets in patients with periodontitis. Wisdom teeth were extracted from patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis, ranging in age from 33 to 63 years (mean [±SD], 46 ± 12), and periodontal tissues were scraped for cell sources. Three-layered PDL-derived cell sheets were constructed using temperature-responsive culture dishes and transplanted in an autologous fashion following standard flap surgeries. Bony defects were filled with beta-tricalcium phosphate granules. Clinical variables were evaluated at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. Cone-beam computed tomography was performed at baseline and 6 months. Additionally, mid-long-term follow-up has been performed with patients’ agreements. Results Our method was found to be safe and no severe adverse events were identified. All the findings, including reduction of periodontal probing depth (mean ± SD, 3.2 ± 1.9 mm), clinical attachment gain (2.5 ± 2.6 mm), and increase of radiographic bone height (2.3 ± 1.8 mm), were improved in all 10 cases at 6 months after the transplantation. These therapeutic effects were sustained during a mean follow-up period of 55 ± 19 months, and there were no serious adverse events. Conclusions The results of this study validate the safety and efficacy of autologous PDL-derived cell sheets in severe periodontal defects, and the stability of this efficacy during mid-long-term follow up. This cytotherapeutic approach, based on cell sheet engineering, offers an innovative strategy to treat the recognized unmet need of treating severe periodontal defects.

Abstract
Osseointegrated implants have been recognized as being very reliable and having long-term predictability. However, host defense mechanisms against infection have been known to be impaired around a dental implant because of the lack of a periodontal ligament (PDL). The purpose of our experimental design was to produce cementum and PDL on the implant surface adopting cell sheet technology. To this aim we used PDL-derived cells, which contain multipotential stem cells, as the cell source and we cultured them on an implant material constituted of commercially pure titanium treated with acid etching, blasting, and a calcium phosphate (CaP) coating to improve cell attachment. Implants with adhered human PDL cell sheets were transplanted into bone defects in athymic rat femurs as a xenogeneic model. Implants with adhered canine PDL-derived cell sheets were transplanted into canine mandibular bone as an autologous model. We confirmed that PDL-derived cells cultured with osteoinductive medium had the ability to induce cementum formation. The attachment of PDL cells onto the titanium surface with three surface treatments was accelerated, compared with that onto the smooth titanium surface, at 40 min after starting incubation. Results in the rat model showed that cementum-like and PDL-like tissue was partly observed on the titanium surface with three surface treatments in combination with adherent PDL-derived cell sheets. On the other hand, osseointegration was observed on almost all areas of the smooth titanium surface that had PDL-derived cell sheets, but did not have the three surface treatments. In the canine model, histological observation indicated that formation of cementum-like and PDL-like tissue was induced on the titanium surface with surface treatments and that the PDL-like tissue was perpendicularly oriented between the titanium surface with cementum-like tissue and the bone. Results demonstrate that a periodontal-like structure was formed around a titanium implant, which is similar to the environment existing around a natural tooth. The clinical application of dental implants combined with a cell sheet technique may be feasible as an alternative implant therapy. Furthermore, application of this methodology may play an innovative role in the periodontal, prosthetic, and orthodontic fields in dentistry.

Abstract
Aims/Introduction To explore the relationships between periodontitis and microvascular complications as well as glycemic control in type 2 diabetes patients. Materials and Methods This multicenter, hospital‐based, cross‐sectional study included 620 patients with type 2 diabetes. We compared the prevalence and severity of periodontitis between patients with ≥1 microvascular complication and those without microvascular complications. We also compared the prevalence and severity of periodontitis among patients with different degrees of glycemic control. Results After adjusting for confounding factors, multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the severity of periodontitis was significantly associated with the number of microvascular complications (odds ratio 1.3, 95% confidence interval 1.1–1.6), glycated hemoglobin ≥8.0% (64 mmol/mol; odds ratio 1.6; 95% confidence interval 1.1–2.3), and older age (≥50 years; odds ratio 1.7; 95% confidence interval 1.1–2.6). However, the prevalence of periodontitis was not significantly associated with the number of microvascular complications, but was associated with male sex, high glycated hemoglobin (≥8.0% [64 mmol/mol]), older age (≥40 years), longer duration of diabetes (≥15 years) and fewer teeth (≤25). Furthermore, propensity score matching for age, sex, diabetes duration and glycated hemoglobin showed that the incidence of severe periodontitis was significantly higher among patients with microvascular complications than among those without microvascular complications (P < 0.05). Conclusions The number of microvascular complications is a risk factor for more severe periodontitis in patients with type 2 diabetes, whereas poor glycemic control is a risk factor for increased prevalence and severity of periodontitis.

Abstract
Laser irradiation has numerous favorable characteristics, such as ablation or vaporization, hemostasis, biostimulation (photobiomodulation) and microbial inhibition and destruction, which induce various beneficial therapeutic effects and biological responses. Therefore, the use of lasers is considered effective and suitable for treating a variety of inflammatory and infectious oral conditions. The CO2 , neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Nd:YAG) and diode lasers have mainly been used for periodontal soft-tissue management. With development of the erbium-doped yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Er:YAG) and erbium, chromium-doped yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) lasers, which can be applied not only on soft tissues but also on dental hard tissues, the application of lasers dramatically expanded from periodontal soft-tissue management to hard-tissue treatment. Currently, various periodontal tissues (such as gingiva, tooth roots and bone tissue), as well as titanium implant surfaces, can be treated with lasers, and a variety of dental laser systems are being employed for the management of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. In periodontics, mechanical therapy has conventionally been the mainstream of treatment; however, complete bacterial eradication and/or optimal wound healing may not be necessarily achieved with conventional mechanical therapy alone. Consequently, in addition to chemotherapy consisting of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents, phototherapy using lasers and light-emitting diodes has been gradually integrated with mechanical therapy to enhance subsequent wound healing by achieving thorough debridement, decontamination and tissue stimulation. With increasing evidence of benefits, therapies with low- and high-level lasers play an important role in wound healing/tissue regeneration in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. This article discusses the outcomes of laser therapy in soft-tissue management, periodontal nonsurgical and surgical treatment, osseous surgery and peri-implant treatment, focusing on postoperative wound healing of periodontal and peri-implant tissues, based on scientific evidence from currently available basic and clinical studies, as well as on case reports.

Abstract
Background: Hypouricaemia is a relatively common disorder in the general population. Since the discovery of the human urate transporter 1 (hURAT1) gene, the number of patients diagnosed with renal hypouricaemia caused by hURAT1 gene mutation(s) has increased. A rapid method for detecting such a mutation(s) for diagnostic aid is described herein. Methods: A rapid method for detecting G269A (R90H) mutations by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was developed. Results: The patient had compound heterozygous mutations in the hURAT1 gene (R90H and W258X), but showed no clinical manifestations such as urolithiasis or exercise-induced acute renal failure. The G269A (R90H) mutation was detected by PCR-RFLP using the Notl restriction enzyme. Conclusions: PCR-RFLP is useful for detecting G269A (R90H) mutations in the hURAT1 gene.

Abstract
Background Oral care is important for oral and systemic health, especially for elderly institutionalized individuals and compromised patients. However, conventional mechanical plaque control is often difficult for these patients because of the pain or the risk of aspiration. Although antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), which is considered an alternative or adjunct to mechanical approaches, has potential application as a less stressful method of daily plaque control, no clinical application of this technique has been reported. Methods We investigated the inhibitory effect of a combination of toluidine blue O (TBO), and a red light-emitting diode (LED) on dental plaque formation in healthy volunteers. The optimal concentration of TBO was determined in preliminary in vitro experiments to evaluate the bactericidal effect of aPDT on Streptococcus oralis and to clarify its safety in fibroblast cells. To survey the mechanism of TBO-mediated aPDT, the quality and quantity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during aPDT were also examined using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Subsequently, the inhibitory effect of aPDT on dental plaque formation was investigated in eleven subjects as a clinical pilot study. The right or left mandibular premolars were randomly assigned to the treatment (with aPDT) or control (without aPDT) groups. In total, aPDT was applied six times (twice per day) to the teeth in the test group over a period of four days. On the fourth day, the study concluded and the analyses were performed. Results A combination of 500 or 1000 μg/ml TBO and LED irradiation for 20 s significantly decreased the number of colony forming units of Streptococcus oralis. The cytotoxicity of aPDT was comparable to that of standard antiseptics used in the oral cavity. Hydroxyl radicals were detected by ESR analysis, but singlet oxygen was not. A randomized controlled trial demonstrated that aPDT with 1000 μg/ml TBO and red LED irradiation significantly suppressed dental plaque formation without harming teeth or the surrounding tissues. Conclusions aPDT has the potential to be a promising novel technical modality for dental plaque control. Abstract
Periodontitis, a recognized disease worldwide, is bacterial infection-induced inflammation of the periodontal tissues that results in loss of alveolar bone. Once it occurs, damaged tissue cannot be restored to its original form, even if decontaminating treatments are performed. For more than half a century, studies have been conducted to investigate true periodontal regeneration. Periodontal regeneration is the complete reconstruction of the damaged attachment apparatus, which contains both hard tissue (alveolar bone and cementum) and soft tissue (periodontal ligament). Several treatments, including bone grafts, guided tissue regeneration with physical barriers for epithelial cells, and growth factors have been approved for clinical use; however, their indications and outcomes are limited. To overcome these limitations, the concept of "tissue engineering" was introduced. Combination treatment using cells, growth factors, and scaffolds, has been studied in experimental animal models, and some studies have been translated into clinical trials. In this review, we focus on recent progressive tissue engineering studies and discuss future perspectives on periodontal regeneration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this research was to determine the effectiveness of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in the removal of mycoplasmas from contaminated cells. BACKGROUND DATA Mycoplasmas often contaminate cell cultures. The cell-contaminating mycoplasmas are removed by antibiotics, but the use of antibiotics usually induces antibiotic-resistant bacteria. aPDT is expected to be a possible alternative to antibiotic treatments for suppressing infections. MATERIALS AND METHODS Mycoplasma salivarium (Ms)-infected human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells were irradiated using a red light-emitting diode (LED) in the presence of methylene blue (MB) as a photosensitizer. The Ms viable count was determined using culture on agar plates or using a mycoplasma detection kit. RESULTS aPDT performed using red LED irradiation was effective in decreasing live Ms in the presence of MB without damaging the HEK293 cells. aPDT removed live Ms from the infected cells after washing the cells with sterilized phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) to decrease the initial number of live Ms before aPDT. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that aPDT could remove mycoplasmas from contaminated cells.

Abstract
AIM Light-emitting diodes have been investigated as new light activators for photodynamic therapy. We investigated the bactericidal effects of high-power, red light-emitting diodes on two periodontopathic bacteria in vitro. METHODS A light-emitting diode (intensity: 1100 mW/cm(2) , peak wavelength: 650 nm) was used to irradiate a bacterial solution for either 10 or 20 s. Bacterial solutions (Porphyromonas gingivalis or Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans) at a concentration of 2.5 × 10(6) c.f.u./mL were mixed with an equal volume of either methylene blue or toluidine blue O (0-20 μg/mL) and added to titer plate wells. The plate wells were irradiated with red light-emitting diode light from a distance of 22 or 40 mm. The contents were diluted, and 50 μL was smeared onto blood agar plates. After 1 week of culturing, bacterial c.f.u. were counted. RESULTS The light-emitting diode energy density was estimated to be approximately 4 and 8 J/cm(2) after 10 and 20 s of irradiation, respectively. Red light-emitting diode irradiation for 10 s from a distance of 22 mm, combined with methylene blue at concentrations >10 μg/mL, completely killed Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. CONCLUSION High-power, red light-emitting diode irradiation with a low concentration of dye showed effective bactericidal effects against two periodontopathic bacteria.

Abstract
Cytotherapeutic approaches have been investigated to overcome the limitations of existing procedures for periodontal regeneration. In this study, cell sheet transplantation was performed using three kinds of mesenchymal tissue (periodontal ligament, alveolar periosteum, and bone marrow)-derived cells to compare the differences between cell sources in a canine severe defect model (one-wall intrabony defect). Periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs), iliac bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BMMSCs), and alveolar periosteal cells (APCs) were obtained from each dog; a total of four dogs were used. Three-layered cell sheets of each cell source supported with woven polyglycolic acid were autologously transplanted to the denuded root surface. One-wall intrabony defects were filled with a mixture of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and collagen. Eight weeks after the transplantation, periodontal regeneration was significantly observed with both newly formed cementum and well-oriented PDL fibers more in the PDLC group than in the other groups. In addition, nerve filament was observed in the regenerated PDL tissue only in the PDLC group. The amount of alveolar bone regeneration was highest in the PDLC group, although it did not reach statistical significance among the groups. These results indicate that PDLC sheets combined with β-TCP/collagen scaffold serve as a promising tool for periodontal regeneration.

Abstract
AIM Periodontal ligament (PDL) is a reliable cell source for periodontal regeneration. In this study, an optimal protocol for the extraction, expansion, and characterization of human PDL (hPDL) cells was examined for clinical trials. MATERIALS AND METHODS hPDL tissues were obtained from 41 surgically extracted teeth and digested with enzymes. Human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs), bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMMSCs), and gingival fibroblasts (hGFs) were used for comparison. For each sample, the proliferative capacity, colony-forming ability, alkaline phosphatase activity, differentiation ability, the cell surface antigens, gene expression, and regenerative potential were examined. RESULTS hPDL cells were more successfully extracted with collagenase/dispase [29/30 (96.7%)] than with trypsin/EDTA [8/11 (72.7%)], and exhibited osteogenic potential both in vitro and in vivo. The proliferation of hPDL cells was rapid at a low cell density. hPDL cells frequently differentiated into cementoblastic/osteoblastic lineage (∼60%). In contrast, their adipogenic and chondrogenic potentials were lower than those of hADSCs and hBMMSCs. Some genes (NCAM1, S100A4, and periostin) were preferentially expressed in hPDL cells compared with those of hBMMSCs and hGFs. Immunohistochemical studies revealed the expressions of S100A4 and periostin in hPDL tissue. CONCLUSION A protocol for the successful cultivation and validation of hPDL cells is proposed for clinical settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Periodontal ligament (PDL) cells have an important role in periodontal regeneration. The unique characteristics of PDL cells, mainly outgrown cells derived from PDL tissue, have been investigated. Recently, mesenchymal stem cells have been obtained from PDL tissue using enzyme digestion. The differences in properties of those PDL cells cultured by the two methods (outgrowth and enzyme digestion) are unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of PDL cells obtained by these methods. METHODS PDL cells from extracted tooth were cultured using outgrowth and enzyme digest methods. Cell proliferation, colony-forming activity and differentiation capacity to osteoblast, adipocyte and chondrocyte were compared. Gene expressions for PDL cells, mesenchymal stem cells and fibroblasts were also investigated by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Procollagen type I c-peptide (PIP) production was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. RESULTS PDL cells cultured by enzyme digest methods showed a higher proliferation rate, colony-forming activity and differentiation capacity into osteoblast, adipocyte and chondrocyte than those in PDL cells by outgrowth method. CD166, one of the mesenchymal stem cell markers, was slightly higher in enzyme-digested PDL than in outgrowth PDL, whilst gene expressions for type 1 collagen alpha 1 and type 3 collagen were higher in outgrown PDL cells. Moreover, outgrowth PDL exhibited higher PIP production than enzyme-digested PDL cells. CONCLUSION PDL cells obtained by outgrowth and enzyme digestion showed different characteristics. The enzyme digestion method yielded cells with higher proliferation rate and mesenchymal stem cell-like properties, whereas cells with fibroblast-like properties were collected in the outgrowth method. PDL cell properties by different culture methods may provide information for inventing new therapeutic uses of PDL cells.

Abstract
Patients with acquired cystic disease of the kidney (ACDK) were followed longitudinally over an average of 21.7 +/- 5.4 years to determine the natural history of the disease; that is, how big the kidneys become, when the kidney size reaches a plateau, and when the size regresses. Twenty-seven male and 20 female patients with chronic glomerulonephritis treated at our hospital were investigated. CT scans were performed once a year and kidney volume was measured. Two different quadratic curves with a node of 5.2 years for males and 2.5 years for females after the start of hemodialysis were fitted to log-transformed kidney volume to the duration of hemodialysis using a linear mixed model. The maximum kidney volume in male patients was obtained 21.1 years after the start of hemodialysis using this model. Peak values of kidney volume were demonstrated in 19 of 26 cases during the observation period. The median peak value (interquartile range) of bilateral kidney volumes was 274 (165-849) mL/1.73 m(2) occurring 19.1 +/- 4.5 years after the start of dialysis. In one male patient who had undergone nephrectomy due to renal cell carcinoma and in two of the remaining 26 male patients, the maximum kidney volume of 782 (residual kidney), 1151, and 1129 mL regressed to 428, 616, and 847 mL (reduction rate: 45.3, 46.5, and 25.0%) at 20.6, 25.4, and 23.1 years after the start of hemodialysis, respectively. Kidney enlargement due to ACDK reached a plateau after 21.1 years of hemodialysis in the male patients. Partial regression of severe ACDK may occur naturally after long-term hemodialysis without renal transplantation.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the clinical features of Acanthamoeba keratitis in nine patients diagnosed at Dokkyo Medical University Koshigaya Hospital, Saitama, Japan. Methods In nine eyes of nine patients, Acanthamoeba keratitis was diagnosed by direct light microscopy of corneal scrapings stained by the Parker ink-potassium hydroxide method between September 2006 and September 2009. Their clinical features and course were studied retrospectively. Antifungal eye drops, systemic antifungal therapy, and surgical debridement of the corneal lesions were performed in all patients. Results At presentation, the clinical stage was initial in six cases, transient in one case, and complete in two cases. The patients were all contact lens wearers who had washed their lens storage cases with tap water. After treatment, final visual acuity was improved in six cases, unchanged in one case, and worse in two cases. The patient with the worst final vision (hand motion) had rheumatoid arthritis and was taking oral prednisolone, which led to corneal perforation and prevented adequate debridement from being done. Conclusion Acanthamoeba keratitis is closely related to wearing contact lenses and washing the lens storage case with tap water. Although final visual acuity improved after treatment in most patients, insufficient surgical debridement resulted in a poor visual prognosis.

Abstract
We report the case of acquired left ventricle (LV) to right atrial (RA) communication through an aneurysm of the atrioventricular septum caused by infectious endocarditis. A severe aortic valve regurgitation and destruction of the aortic valve was detected by echocardiography. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a flail aortic valve with vegetation and abnormal shunt flow from the LV to RA with ruptured aneurysm of the membranous septum. An abscess cavity of the aortic ring was introduced. Because of worsening congestive heart failure, the patient underwent emergency aortic valve replacement and patch closure of the communication of the membranous septum. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful.

Abstract
AIM Anti-cardiolipin (CL) antibodies can be induced in Buerger disease (BD), an inflammatory occlusive disorder affecting peripheral blood vessels, in response to bacteria bearing homology to the TLRVYK peptide of a phospholipid-binding plasma protein beta-2-glycoprotein I. TLRVYK homologies are present in Porphyromonas gingivalis (TLRIYT) and Treponema denticola (TLALYK). This study investigated the association between periodontal infection and anti-CL antibodies in BD patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS Periodontal conditions were examined in 19 BD patients and 25 systemically healthy control subjects. All subjects were heavy smokers. Serum anti-CL, anti-TLRVYK, anti-TLRIYT, and anti-TLALYK antibodies were assessed using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS BD patients had a significantly higher prevalence of periodontitis, more severe periodontal destruction and increased titres of serum anti-CL, anti-TLRVYK, anti-TLRIYT, and anti-TLALYK antibodies compared with healthy subjects. The levels of anti-CL antibodies positively correlated with those of the three anti-peptide antibodies. Anti-CL antibody titres were significantly associated with the percentage of sites with clinical attachment level >or=4 mm in BD patients. CONCLUSION Elevated anti-CL antibody levels were associated with periodontal destruction in BD patients. Periodontopathic bacteria may serve as exogenous antigens that stimulate the anti-CL antibody production through molecular mimicry between the bacterial peptides and a host plasma protein.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The erbium-doped:yttrium, aluminum, and garnet (Er:YAG) laser is reportedly useful for periodontal therapy. However, the potential thermal damage that Er:YAG laser irradiation can produce on bone tissue has not been fully clarified. The purpose of this study was to histologically examine the effects of the Er:YAG laser on bone tissue and subsequent wound healing compared to electrosurgery in a long-term study. METHODS Calvarial bone from 30 rats was exposed to contact and non-contact Er:YAG laser irradiation (115 mJ/pulse, 10 Hz) without water coolant, or electrode contact. The treated surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the healing process was histologically observed until 12 months post-surgery. RESULTS Contact irradiation resulted in substantial bone ablation, whereas non-contact irradiation produced slight tissue removal. Histologic and SEM analyses of the lased surface showed no severe thermal damage, except for the production of a superficially affected layer with a microstructured surface. The layer did not inhibit new bone formation, and the ablated defect was repaired uneventfully. Although the thickness of the layer gradually decreased, it generally remained in the cortical bone through the observation period. Electrosurgery produced a large area of thermal necrosis without ablation, and the damaged area was not replaced with new bone. CONCLUSIONS Unlike electrosurgery, Er:YAG laser irradiation without water coolant easily ablated bone tissue, and thermal alteration in the treated surface was minimal. The superficially affected layer did not interfere with the ensuing bone healing, resulting in favorable repair of the defect.

Abstract
AIM The primary goal of periodontal treatment is regeneration of the periodontium. Current theories suggest that the periodontal ligament (PDL) cells have the capacity to participate in restoring connective and mineralized tissues, when appropriately triggered. We evaluated whether human PDL cell sheets could reconstruct periodontal tissue. MATERIAL AND METHODS To obtain the cell sheet, human PDL cells were cultured on temperature-responsive culture dishes with or without osteogenic differentiation medium. The cell sheets were transplanted on periodontal fenestration defects of immunodeficient rats. Forty rats were divided in two groups: in one group, cell sheets cultured with control medium were transplanted and in the other, cell sheets cultured with osteogenic differentiation medium were transplanted. The defects were analysed histologically and histomorphologically after healing. RESULTS Most of the experimental group exhibited a new cementum-like layer and new attachment of collagen fibres to the layer. Histomorphological analyses indicated significant periodontal regeneration. The control group revealed dense extracellular matrix and fibre formation, but an obvious cementum layer was not observed. CONCLUSIONS Transplanted PDL cell sheets cultured with osteogenic differentiation medium induced periodontal regeneration containing an obvious cementum layer and Sharpey's fibres. Thus, the method could be feasible as a new therapeutic approach for periodontal regeneration.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine whether periodontal treatment incorporating topical antibiotic therapy affects on levels of glycohemoglobin (HbA1c) and serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in type 2 diabetic patients with periodontal disease, and to explore the relationship between CRP and glycemic control. The whole intervention group (n=32), which underwent anti-infectious periodontal treatment, showed only transient reduction in HbA1c levels without any change in hs-CRP, while the control group (n=17) did not show any changes in HbA1c or hs-CRP. Multiple regression analysis of all subjects revealed that BMI and change in hs-CRP correlated significantly with the reduction of HbA1c at 6 months after the periodontal treatment. Based on the results of multiple regression analysis, the intervention group was subdivided into two groups: those in which hs-CRP levels decreased (CRP-D group), and those in which hs-CRP levels unchanged or increased (CRP-N group) (n=16, respectively), and re-analysis was conducted based upon these subgroups. In the CRP-D subgroup, HbA1c was significantly reduced at the end of the study, but it did not decrease in the CRP-N subgroup. The decrease of HbA1c in the CRP-D subgroup following periodontal treatment was significantly greater than that in the CRP-N subgroup. BMI of each group remained unchanged in this study at the end of the study. Thus, the results suggested that periodontal treatment with topical antibiotics improves HbA1c through reduction of CRP, which may relate to amelioration of insulin resistance, in type 2 diabetic patients with periodontal disease.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to compare the effect of single-visit full-mouth mechanical debridement (FMD) and quadrant-wise mechanical debridement (QMD) on the levels of serum interleukin (IL)-6, C-reactive protein (CRP) and soluble thrombomodulin. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-six subjects with chronic periodontitis were randomly allocated to three groups: undergoing QMD, single-visit FMD with povidone iodine or with water. Serum IL-6 and soluble thrombomodulin were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and serum CRP was measured by the latex-enhanced nephelometric method. RESULTS Serum IL-6 level increased significantly immediately after debridement in all the three groups, with this increase being greatest in the full-mouth groups. However, the increase in the full-mouth groups was not significantly higher than that of quadrant-wise group. In the quadrant-wise group, serum IL-6 level decreased significantly 1 month after debridement compared with baseline. Serum-soluble thrombomodulin decreased significantly in the full-mouth groups but not in the quadrant-wise group. Changes in CRP level were not significant at baseline or after debridement in all the three groups. CONCLUSIONS FMD increased serum IL-6 and reduced serum-soluble thrombomodulin to a greater extent than QMD, suggesting that the former technique has stronger transient effects on systemic vascular endothelial functions than the latter.
