Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco is a highly prevalent substance of abuse in patients with psychosis. Previous studies have reported an association between tobacco use and schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between tobacco use and first-episode psychosis (FEP), age at onset of psychosis, and specific diagnosis of psychosis. METHODS The sample consisted of 1105 FEP patients and 1355 controls from the European Network of National Schizophrenia Networks Studying Gene-Environment Interactions (EU-GEI) study. We assessed substance use with the Tobacco and Alcohol Questionnaire and performed a series of regression analyses using case-control status, age of onset of psychosis, and diagnosis as outcomes and tobacco use and frequency of tobacco use as predictors. Analyses were adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, alcohol, and cannabis use. RESULTS After controlling for cannabis use, FEP patients were 2.6 times more likely to use tobacco [p ⩽ 0.001; adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 2.6; 95% confidence interval (CI) [2.1-3.2]] and 1.7 times more likely to smoke 20 or more cigarettes a day (p = 0.003; AOR 1.7; 95% CI [1.2-2.4]) than controls. Tobacco use was associated with an earlier age at psychosis onset (β = -2.3; p ⩽ 0.001; 95% CI [-3.7 to -0.9]) and was 1.3 times more frequent in FEP patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia than in other diagnoses of psychosis (AOR 1.3; 95% CI [1.0-1.8]); however, these results were no longer significant after controlling for cannabis use. CONCLUSIONS Tobacco and heavy-tobacco use are associated with increased odds of FEP. These findings further support the relevance of tobacco prevention in young populations.

Abstract
Today's rising energy costs, coupled with increasing energy demand, make it necessary to search for more efficient energy processes. In recent years, there have been increasing efforts to develop efficient catalysts based on waste-derived char, by a single step where the carbon precursor and the metallic active phase one undergo a single common thermal process under a reductant atmosphere at high temperature. The use of a reductant atmosphere drives the formation of carbonaceous materials with different characteristics than those obtained under the standard nitrogen-inert one. Our work evaluates the influence of the residence time and the heating rate on the physicochemical properties of the biochar obtained. Relatively long residence times and slow heating rates, improve the yield to the resulting biochar, without increasing production cost, making the subsequent char-based metallic catalyst synthesis more efficient. The heating rate was shown to be key in improving the properties of the char in a smoother and more controlled way, unlocking a new working pathway for the efficient design and production of char-based catalysts in a one-pot synthesis.

Abstract
Nonylphenol (NP) is an anthropogenic pollutant frequently found in sewage sludge due to the insufficient degrading effectiveness of conventional WWTPs and has attracted attention as an endocrine disruptor. The aim of this study was to isolate specific NP-degrading bacteria from sewage sludge to be used in the degradation of this contaminant through bioaugmentation processes in aqueous solution and sewage sludge. Up to eight different bacterial strains were isolated, six of them not previously described as NP degraders. Bacillus safensis CN12 presented the best NP degradation in solution, and glucose used as an external carbon source increased its effect, reaching DT50 degradation values (time to decline to half the initial concentration of the pollutant) of only 0.9 days and a complete degradation in <7 days. Four NP metabolites were identified throughout the biodegradation process, showing higher toxicity than the parent contaminant. In sewage sludge suspensions, the endogenous microbiota was capable of partially degrading NP, but a part remained adsorbed as bound residue. Bioaugmentation was used for the first time to remove NP from sewage sludge to obtain more environmentally friendly biosolids. However, B. safensis CN12 was not able to degrade NP due to its high adsorption on sludge, but the use of a cyclodextrin (HPBCD) as availability enhancer allowed us to extract NP and degrade it in solution. The addition of glucose as an external carbon source gave the best results since the metabolism of the sludge microbiota was activated, and HPBCD was able to remove NP from sewage sludge to the solution to be degraded by B. safensis CN12. These results indicate that B. safensis CN12 can be used to degrade NP in water and sewage sludge, but the method must be improved using consortia of B. safensis CN12 with other bacterial strains able to degrade the toxic metabolites produced.

Abstract
Next-generation sequencing assays are capable of identifying cancer patients eligible for targeted therapies and can also detect germline variants associated with increased cancer susceptibility. However, these capabilities have yet to be routinely harmonized in a single assay because of challenges with accurately identifying germline variants from tumor-only data. We have developed the Oncology and Hereditary Cancer Program targeted capture panel, which uses tumor tissue to simultaneously screen for both clinically actionable solid tumor variants and germline variants across 45 genes. Validation using 14 tumor specimens, composed of patient samples and cell lines analyzed in triplicate, demonstrated high coverage with sensitive and specific identification of single-nucleotide variants and small insertions and deletions. Average coverage across all targets remained >2000× in 198 additional patient tumor samples. Analysis of 55 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor samples for the detection of known germline variants within a subset of cancer-predisposition genes, including one multiexon deletion, yielded a 100% detection rate, demonstrating that germline variants can be reliably detected in tumor samples using a single panel. Combining targetable somatic and actionable germline variants into a single tumor tissue assay represents a streamlined approach that can inform treatment for patients with advanced cancers as well as identify those with potential germline variants who are eligible for confirmatory testing, but would not otherwise have been identified.

Abstract
Purpose: Cancer treatment for those nearing death has become increasingly aggressive over time despite evidence that less aggressive approaches are associated with better quality of life and sometimes longer survival. Chemotherapy administration in the last 14 days of life is one of the proposed benchmarks for quality of cancer care. The purpose of our study is to evaluate factors associated with aggressive cancer treatment in patients who died within 2 weeks of receiving chemotherapy. Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated adult patients who died between 1 February 2018 and 1 March 2019 after receiving cancer treatment in the preceding 14 days at the Prisma Health Cancer Institute. This project was approved by our institutional review board. Data was obtained by review of electronic medical records and analyzed using commercial software. Results: We identified 92 patients who met inclusion criteria for the study. Of those who were staged, 57% had metastatic disease. A majority received treatments with only palliative intent (54%). These patients overwhelmingly died in the hospital (62%). Few had documented advanced directives (28%) or dedicated palliative care for longer than 1 week (28%). Overall, this cohort reflects a rate of 11.7% of patients who received cancer treatment during the study time period. Significance of Results: Patients receiving aggressive cancer treatment at the end of life elucidate significant gaps in quality cancer care, particularly the early involvement of dedicated palliative care. Systematic review helped identify multiple gaps and assisted in implementing interventions to improve this outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patients with advanced low-grade serous carcinoma (LGSC) have poor long-term survival rates. As a rare histotype, there are uncertainties regarding the use of current therapies. Thus, we studied practice patterns and treatment outcomes as part of a national initiative to better understand and improve the care of women with advanced LGSC. METHODS This retrospective cohort study was conducted in 5 Canadian referral institutions from 2000 to 2016. Data collection and pathology reporting were standardized. Outcome measures included overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), progression-free intervals (PFI), and time to next treatment (TTNT). Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the effects of clinical and pathologic factors on outcomes and prognosis. RESULTS There were 134 patients (stage II-IV) with a median follow-up of 32.4 months (range 1.6-228). Four primary treatments were compared across institutions: 1) surgery followed by chemotherapy (56%), 2) neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by surgery (27%), 3) surgery alone (9%), and 4) surgery followed by anti-hormone therapy (4%). Primary platinum/paclitaxel chemotherapy was used in 81%. Patients treated with NACT had worse PFS. Multivariable Cox regression analysis identified lesser residual disease, younger age, and primary peritoneal origin as variables significantly associated with better OS/PFS (p < 0.03). One institution had significantly better PFS than the others (p = 0.025), but this finding could be related to a higher frequency of primary peritoneal LGSC. PFI and TTNT intervals in patients with relapsed disease were not significantly different after the first relapse irrespective of treatment type. CONCLUSIONS There are notable differences in practice patterns across Canada. This underscores the need for ongoing strategies to measure, evaluate and achieve optimal patient outcomes for women with advanced LGSC.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to examine the cognitive profile of Spanish patients with a first episode of schizophrenia (FESz) and to compare that to the profile of patients with a chronic schizophrenia (CSz) and non-psychiatric (NP) control subjects. The study included 106 FESz, 293 CSz, and 210 NP, assessed with the Spanish version of the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). The MCCB cognitive profile in a Spanish sample of FESz was similar to the cognitive profile of CSz with some discrepancies in select domains. The scores of both patient samples were about 1-2 SD below the scores of non-psychiatric control subjects.

Abstract
Recent evidence suggests that cell-derived circulating miRNAs may serve as biomarkers of cardiovascular diseases. However, a few studies have investigated the potential of circulating miRNAs as biomarkers for left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). In this study, we aimed to characterize the miRNA profiles that could distinguish hypertensive patients with LHV, hypertensive patients without LVH and control subjects, and identify potential miRNAs as biomarkers of LVH. LVH was defined by left ventricular mass indexed to body surface area >125 g/m2 in men and >110 g/m2 in women and patients were classified as hypertensive when presenting a systolic blood pressure of 140 mmHg or more, or a diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg or more. We employed miRNA PCR array to screen serum miRNAs profiles of patients with LVH, essential hypertension and healthy subjects. We identified 75 differentially expressed miRNAs, including 49 upregulated miRNAs and 26 downregulated miRNAs between LVH and control patients. We chose 2 miRNAs with significant differences for further testing in 59 patients. RT-PCR analysis of serum samples confirmed that miR-7-5p and miR-26b-5p were upregulated in the serum of LVH hypertensive patients compared with healthy subjects. Our findings suggest that these miRNAs may play a role in the pathogenesis of hypertensive LVH and may represent novel biomarkers for this disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine emotion processing in euthymic bipolar patients (EBP) compared to healthy controls. In addition, to determine whether or not there is an association between emotion processing and psychosocial functioning. MATERIAL AND METHODS A sample of 60 EBP and 60 healthy controls matched for age, gender, education level, and premorbid intelligence were studied. All subjects were assessed using the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) and two additional executive function measures: the Trail Making Test-Part B and the Stroop Test. Emotion processing was examined using the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT). Psychosocial functioning was assessed using the Functional Assessment Short Test (FAST). RESULTS Euthymic bipolar patients obtained lower scores than controls in all MSCEIT measures except for the using emotions branch. Likewise, EBP obtained a worse performance than healthy controls in all neurocognitive domains. Correlation between MSCEIT strategic area measures and FAST total score was found (r = -0.311; P < 0.016). Regression analysis showed that residual depressive symptomatology explains a 9.1% of the variance in functional outcome. MSCEIT strategic area score explained an additional 8.6%. Neurocognition did not increase the percentage of the variance explained by emotion processing. CONCLUSIONS Euthymic bipolar patients exhibit deficits in emotion processing. Emotion processing is associated with social functioning in these patients.

Abstract
Non-syndromic cleft lip/palate (NSCLP) is a complex genetic trait. Linkage and association studies have suggested that a clefting locus could be located on chromosome 4p. Sixty Chilean families were recruited for this study; from these, we used unrelated trios to evaluate the possible linkage disequilibrium between MSX1 and NSCLP. An intragenic marker, MSX1-CA, and an extragenic marker, D4S432 at a distance of 0.8 cM from MSX1, were analyzed by means of polymerase chain-reaction with fluorescent-labeled forward primers, followed by electrophoresis on a laser-fluorescent sequencer. We carried out a transmission/disequilibrium test (TDT) for multiple alleles to evaluate the presence of linkage disequilibrium. Results showed a preferential transmission of the 169-bp allele of MSX1 (p = 0.03). Although there was no preferential transmission for the D4S432 marker, the overall extended TDT (ETDT) showed a significant result (p = 0.01). The authors’ findings support the hypothesis of the contribution of MSX1 in the etiology of NSCLP in the Chilean population.

Abstract
Studies conducted in monozygotic and dizygotic twins have established a strong genetic component in eating behavior. Rare mutations and common variants of the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) gene have been linked to obesity and eating behavior scores. However, few studies have assessed common variants in MC4R gene with the rewarding value of food in children. The objective of the study was to evaluate the association between the MC4R rs17782313 polymorphism with homeostatic and non-homeostatic eating behavior patterns in Chileans children. This is a cross-sectional study in 258 Chilean children (44 % female, 8-14 years old) showing a wide variation in BMI. Anthropometric measurements (weight, height, Z-score of BMI and waist circumference) were performed by standard procedures. Eating behavior was assessed using the Eating in Absence of Hunger Questionnaire (EAHQ), the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ), the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ), and the Food Reinforcement Value Questionnaire (FRVQ). Genotype of the rs17782313 nearby MC4R was determined by a Taqman assay. Association of the rs17782313 C allele with eating behavior was assessed using non-parametric tests. We found that children carrying the CC genotype have higher scores of food responsiveness (p value = 0.02). In obese girls, carriers of the C allele showed lower scores of satiety responsiveness (p value = 0.02) and higher scores of uncontrolled eating (p value = 0.01). Obese boys carrying the C allele showed lower rewarding value of food in relation to non-carriers. The rs17782313 C allele is associated with eating behavior traits that may predispose obese children to increased energy intake and obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Deficient prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle response, indicating sensorimotor gating deficits, has been reported in schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders. This study aimed to assess sensorimotor gating deficits in patients with euthymic bipolar. Furthermore, we analysed the relationships between PPI and clinical and cognitive measures. METHOD Prepulse inhibition was measured in 64 patients with euthymic bipolar and in 64 control subjects matched for age, gender, education level and smoking status. Clinical characteristics and level of functioning were assessed in all participants using Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST). Cognition was evaluated using the Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) and the Stroop test as an additional measure of executive function. RESULTS Compared with controls, patients with bipolar disorder exhibited PPI deficits at 60- and 120-millisecond prepulse-pulse intervals. Among patients with bipolar disorder, PPI was correlated with the social cognition domain of the MCCB. PPI was not significantly correlated with other clinical, functional and neurocognitive variables in either group. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that PPI deficit is a neurobiological marker in euthymic bipolar disorder, which is associated with social cognition but not with other clinical, functional or cognitive measures.

Abstract
A palladium (Pd)-based optical metamaterial has been designed, fabricated and characterized for its application in hydrogen sensing. The metamaterial can replace Pd thin films in optical transmission schemes for sensing with performances far superior to those of conventional sensors. This artificial material consists of a palladium-alumina metamaterial fabricated using inexpensive and industrial-friendly bottom-up techniques. During the exposure to hydrogen, the system exhibits anomalous optical absorption when compared to the well-known response of Pd thin films, this phenomenon being the key factor for the sensor sensitivity. The exposure to hydrogen produces a large variation in the light transmission through the metamembrane (more than 30% with 4% in volume hydrogen-nitrogen gas mixture at room temperature and atmospheric pressure), thus avoiding the need for sophisticated optical detection systems. An optical homogenization model is proposed to explain the metamaterial response. These results contribute to the development of reliable and low-cost hydrogen sensors with potential applications in the hydrogen economy and industrial processes to name a few, and also open the door to optically study the hydrogen diffusion processes in Pd nanostructures.

Abstract
Insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity indexes are related by hyperbolic functions, allowing the calculation of the disposition index (DI) as the product of the acute insulin response (AIR) and the insulin sensitivity index (Si) from intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT). Our objective was to develop an oral-DI based on the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and to assess its association with glucose tolerance status. This research is structured in three studies. Study 1: OGTT were performed in 833 non-diabetic Chilean women (18-60 years) without family history of diabetes mellitus. Study 2: an independent group of n = 57 non-diabetic (18-46 years) without family history of diabetes mellitus carried out an OGTT and an abbreviated IVGTT. Study 3: a sample of 1674 Chilean adults (18-60 years) with different glycaemic status performed an OGTT. An adequate statistical fit for a rectangular hyperbola was found between the area under the curve of insulin-to-glucose ratio (AUCI/G-R) and the Matsuda ISI-COMP index (study 1). The oral-DI derived as AUCI/G-R × ISI-COMP was previously termed insulin-secretion-sensitivity index-2 (ISSI-2). ISSI-2 significantly correlated with DI from IVGTT (rho = 0.34; p = 0.009) (study 2). ISSI-2 shows important differences across groups of subjects with different glycaemic status (study 3). We have confirmed that ISSI-2 replicates the mathematical properties of DI, showing significant correlations with DI from the abbreviated MM-IVGTT. These results indicate that ISSI-2 constitutes a surrogate measure of insulin secretion relative to insulin sensitivity and emphasizes the pivotal role of impaired insulin secretion in the development of glucose homeostasis dysregulation.

Abstract
A study of a sensor for hydrogen (H2) detection based on fiber Bragg gratings coated with palladium (Pd) with self-temperature compensation is presented. The cladding around the gratings was reduced down to 50 μm diameter by a chemical etching process. One of the gratings was left uncoated, and the other was coated with 150 nm of Pd. It was observed that palladium hydride has unstable behavior in environments with high humidity level. A simple solution to overcome this problem based on a Teflon tape is presented. The sensing device studied was able to respond to H2 concentrations in the range 0%-1% v/v at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, achieving sensitivities larger than 20 pm/% v/v. Considering H2 concentrations in nitrogen up to 1%, the performance of the sensing head was characterized for different thicknesses of Pd coating ranging from 50 to 200 nm.

Abstract
The MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) was administered to 293 schizophrenia outpatients and 210 community residents in Spain. Our first objective was to identify the age- and gender-corrected MCCB cognitive profile of patients with schizophrenia. The profile of schizophrenia patients showed deficits when compared to controls across the seven MCCB domains. Reasoning and Problem Solving and Social Cognition were the least impaired, while Visual Learning and Verbal Learning showed the greatest deficits. Our second objective was to study the effects on cognitive functioning of age and gender, in addition to diagnosis. Diagnosis was found to have the greatest effect on cognition (Cohen's d>0.8 for all MCCB domains); age and gender also had effects on cognitive functioning, although to a lesser degree (with age usually having slightly larger effects than gender). The effects of age were apparent in all domains (with better performance in younger subjects), except for Social Cognition. Gender had effects on Attention/Vigilance, Working Memory, Reasoning and Problem Solving (better performance in males), and Social Cognition (better performance in females). No interaction effects were found between diagnosis and age, or between diagnosis and gender. This lack of interactions suggests that age and gender effects are not different in patients and controls.

Abstract
Purpose To develop and validate a histopathologic scoring system for measuring response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in interval debulking surgery specimens of stage IIIC to IV tubo-ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma. Patients and Methods A six-tier histopathologic scoring system was proposed and applied to a test cohort (TC) of 62 patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and interval debulking surgery. Adnexal and omental sections were independently scored by three pathologists. On the basis of TC results, a three-tier chemotherapy response score (CRS) system was developed and applied to an independent validation cohort of 71 patients. Results The initial system showed moderate interobserver reproducibility and prognostic stratification of TC patients when applied to the omentum but not to the adnexa. Condensed to a three-tier score, the system was highly reproducible (kappa, 0.75). When adjusted for age, stage, and debulking status, the score predicted progression-free survival (PFS; score 2 v 3; median PFS, 11.3 v 32.1 months; adjusted hazard ratio, 6.13; 95% CI, 2.13 to 17.68; P < .001). The three-tier CRS system applied to omental samples from the validation cohort showed high reproducibility (kappa, 0.67) and predicted PFS (CRS 1 and 2 v 3: median, 12 v 18 months; adjusted hazard ratio, 3.60; 95% CI, 1.69 to 7.66; P < .001). CRS 3 also predicted sensitivity to first-line platinum therapy (94.3% negative predictive value for progression < 6 months). A Web site was established to train pathologists to use the CRS system. Conclusion The CRS system is reproducible and shows prognostic significance for high-grade serous carcinoma. Implementation in international pathology reporting has been proposed by the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting, and the system could potentially have an impact on patient care and research.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pancreatic β-cells synthetize and store Serotonin (5-Hydroxytriptamine, 5HT) which is co-released with insulin. It has been proposed that extracellular 5HT binds to specific cell surface receptors and modulate insulin secretion. On the other hand, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine seems to reduce Glucose-Stimulated Insulin Secretion (GSIS). However, it is unknown whether this effect results from changes in extracellular 5HT concentration owed to the blockade of 5HT transporter (SERT) or from non-5HT dependent actions. The aims of this work were: 1) to quantify extracellular 5HT levels and GSIS in β-cell lines, 2) to determine whether extracellular 5HT levels and GSIS are changed by fluoxetine or 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5HTP, the immediate 5HT biosynthetic precursor), and 3) to quantify the expression of Slc6a4 gene (encoding SERT) in β-cell lines in relation to other genes involved in 5HT system. MATERIAL AND METHODS β-cell lines MIN6 and RINm5f were subjected to GSIS protocols, after treatment with fluoxetine, 5HTP or 5HT. Insulin and 5HT were quantified by ELISA and HPLC, respectively. Relative mRNA expression was quantified by RT-qPCR. RESULTS MIN6 β-cells secretes 5HT in response to glucose, showing a sharp increase in 5HT release when cells were preloaded with 5HTP. Treatment with 5HT or fluoxetine reduces GSIS. Fluoxetine fails to further increases 5HTP-induced elevation of secreted 5HT. MIN6 β-cells express both isoforms of Tryptophan Hydroxylase (Tph1 and Tph2), and have high expression levels of L-Dopa decarboxylase (Ddc), both enzymes involved in 5HT biosynthetic pathway, but do not express the 5HT transporters Slc6a4 or Slc6a3 (the Dopamine-5HT transporter) genes. CONCLUSION The inhibitory effect of fluoxetine on β-cell glucose stimulated insulin secretion is not mediated by blockage of 5HT transporter through SERT.

Abstract
We studied the diet of the ocelot and puma during the years 2007 and 2008 at the Feliciano Miguel Abdala Reserve, in Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. We collected 49 faecal samples (scats) from cats, and identified the species of cat from 23 of them by the analysis of the microstructure patterns of hairs found in their faeces: 17 scats of the puma (Puma concolor) and six of the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis). In the puma scats, we identified three species of primates (Brachyteles hypoxanthus, Alouatta guariba and Sapajus nigritus), the remains of which were found in eight of 17 collected (47.1%), representing 26.7% of items consumed. For the ocelot, we detected capuchin monkey (S. nigritus) remains in three of the six scats (50%), accounting for 18.7% of items consumed by ocelot. We were unable to identify the cat species in the remaining 26 faecal samples, but we were able to analyse the food items present. Primates were found in five of these 26 faeces (19.2%) and represented 10.2% of the items found. Although the sample size is limited, our results indicate a relatively high consumption of primates by felines. We believe that this high predation may be the result of the high local density of primates as well as the greater exposure to the risks of predation in fragmented landscapes, which tends to increase the incidence of the primates using the ground.

Abstract
Seventeen pharmaceutically active compounds and 22 other trace organic pollutants were analysed regularly in the influent and permeate from a semi-real plant treating municipal wastewater. The plant was operated during 29 months with different configurations which basically differed in the type of biomass present in the system. These processes were the integrated fixed-film activated sludge membrane bioreactor (IFAS-MBR), which combined suspended and attached biomass, the moving bed membrane bioreactor (MBMBR) (only attached biomass) and the MBR (only suspended biomass). Moreover, removal rates were compared to those of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operating nearby with conventional activated sludge treatment. Reverse osmosis (RO) was used after the pilot plant to improve removal rates. The highest elimination was found for the IFAS-MBR, especially for hormones (100% removal); this was attributed to the presence of biofilm, which may lead to different conditions (aerobic-anoxic-anaerobic) along its profile, which increases the degradation possibilities, and also to a higher sludge age of the biofilm, which allows complete acclimation to the contaminants. Operating conditions played an important role, high mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) and sludge retention time (SRT) being necessary to achieve these high removal rates. Although pharmaceuticals and linear alkylbenzene sulfonates showed high removal rates (65-100%), nonylphenols and phthalate could only be removed to 10-30%. RO significantly increased removal rates to 88% mean removal rate.

Abstract
A sensing configuration for fluid evaporation monitoring using a suspended-core fiber tip is proposed. Strong differences between the evaporation processes of acetone and isopropyl alcohol were observed, both in terms of the signal's intensity fluctuations and total duration. In each fluid, the main signal variations were due to changes in reflectivity inside a collapsed region of the suspended-core fiber near the spliced interface with a standard single-mode fiber. After further analysis with a wider array of substances, this configuration could, in the future, be used to detect and study the evaporation of different volatile organic compounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To assess insight in a large sample of patients with schizophrenia and to study its relationship with set shifting as an executive function. METHODS The insight of a sample of 161 clinically stable, community-dwelling patients with schizophrenia was evaluated by means of the Scale to Assess Unawareness of Mental Disorder (SUMD). Set shifting was measured using the Trail-Making Test time required to complete part B minus the time required to complete part A (TMT B-A). Linear regression analyses were performed to investigate the relationships of TMT B-A with different dimensions of general insight. RESULTS Regression analyses revealed a significant association between TMT B-A and two of the SUMD general components: 'awareness of mental disorder' and 'awareness of the efficacy of treatment'. The 'awareness of social consequences' component was not significantly associated with set shifting. CONCLUSIONS Our results show a significant relation between set shifting and insight, but not in the same manner for the different components of the SUMD general score.

Abstract
Serotonin has been related to feeding behaviour and body weight control through its suppressive effect on appetite. Conflicting results have been published in the literature regarding the association between the - 1438 G/A promoter polymorphism of the 5HT2A gene with obesity-related variables. The aim of this study was to assess the association between the--1438 G/A polymorphism of the 5HT2A gene with childhood obesity in a Spanish population. A total of 136 cases aged 6-16 years with BMI above the 97th percentile of the Spanish BMI reference data for age and gender were matched by gender and age (+/- 6 months) with 136 controls. Additionally, 43 obese children and their parents were selected for a family-based association study (case-parent study). Genotyping was carried out by polymerase chain reaction and restriction enzyme analysis. Conditional logistic regression and transmission/disequilibrium test were used to assess genotype-obesity association. In the matched case-control study, the crude and adjusted odds ratios for the association between 5HT2A--1438 G/A genotypes were nonsignificant. Likewise, no association is suggested by the case-parent study. In conclusion, it is unlikely that the--1438 G/A polymorphism of 5HT2A gene may influence obesity in a Spanish children population.

Abstract
The cohesin complex plays a key role for the maintenance of sister chromatid cohesion and faithful chromosome segregation in both mitosis and meiosis. This complex is formed by two structural maintenance of chromosomes protein family (SMC) subunits and two non-SMC subunits: an α-kleisin subunit SCC1/RAD21/REC8 and an SCC3-like protein. Several studies carried out in different species have revealed that the distribution of the cohesin subunits along the chromosomes during meiotic prophase I is not regular and that some subunits are distinctly incorporated at different cell stages. However, the accurate distribution of the different cohesin subunits in condensed meiotic chromosomes is still controversial. Here, we describe the dynamics of the cohesin subunits SMC1α, SMC3, RAD21 and SA1 during both meiotic divisions in grasshoppers. Although these subunits show a similar patched labelling at the interchromatid domain of metaphase I bivalents, SMCs and non-SMCs subunits do not always colocalise. Indeed, SA1 is the only cohesin subunit accumulated at the centromeric region of all metaphase I chromosomes. Additionally, non-SMC subunits do not appear at the interchromatid domain in either single X or B chromosomes. These data suggest the existence of several cohesin complexes during metaphase I. The cohesin subunits analysed are released from chromosomes at the beginning of anaphase I, with the exception of SA1 which can be detected at the centromeres until telophase II. These observations indicate that the cohesin components may be differentially loaded and released from meiotic chromosomes during the first and second meiotic divisions. The roles of these cohesin complexes for the maintenance of chromosome structure and their involvement in homologous segregation at first meiotic division are proposed and discussed.

Abstract
The occurrence of sixteen pharmaceutically active compounds in influent and effluent wastewater and in primary, secondary and digested sludge in one-year period has been evaluated. Solid-water partition coefficients (Kd) were calculated to evaluate the efficiency of removal of these compounds from wastewater by sorption onto sludge. The ecotoxicological risk to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, due to wastewater discharges to the receiving streams and to the application of digested sludge as fertilizer onto soils, was also evaluated. Twelve of the pharmaceuticals were detected in wastewater at mean concentrations from 0.1 to 32 μg/L. All the compounds found in wastewater were also found in sewage sludge, except diclofenac, at mean concentrations from 8.1 to 2206 μg/kg dm. Ibuprofen, salicylic acid, gemfibrozil and caffeine were the compounds at the highest concentrations. LogKd values were between 1.17 (naproxen) and 3.48 (carbamazepine). The highest ecotoxicological risk in effluent wastewater and digested sludge is due to ibuprofen (risk quotient (RQ): 3.2 and 4.4, respectively), 17α-ethinylestradiol (RQ: 12 and 22, respectively) and 17β-estradiol (RQ: 12 and 359, respectively). Ecotoxicological risk after wastewater discharge and sludge disposal is limited to the presence of 17β-estradiol in digested-sludge amended soil (RQ: 2.7).

Abstract
Analysis of surface-spread synaptonemal complexes of zygotene and pachytene spermatocytes was carried out on centric-shift heterozygotes of grasshoppers. These rearrangements affected the M7 chromosome in Chorthippus vagans and the M6 and S8 chromosomes in Chorthippus apricarius. The shifts in the latter two chromosomes were also associated with C-heterochromatin variations between homologous chromosomes. Rearranged chromosomes proceeded directly to heterosynapsis without an apparent intervening homosynaptic phase in M7 bivalents of Ch. vagans and M6 bivalents of Ch. apricarius. In the latter case, axial equalization of the heterochromatin polymorphism was also achieved. On the other hand, asynapsis of the intercentromeric regions throughout pachytene was the rule in the centric shift involving the S8 chromosome of Ch. apricarius. In the three cases analysed, the production of unbalanced gametes in the heterozygotes is precluded either by the lack of chiasma formation in heterosynapsed rearranged segments or by the lack of pairing between such segments. Chiasmata were limited to the homologous regions of the heteromorphic bivalents.

Abstract
The salivary α-amylase is a calcium-binding enzyme that initiates starch digestion in the oral cavity. The α-amylase genes are located in a cluster on the chromosome that includes salivary amylase genes (AMY1), two pancreatic α-amylase genes (AMY2A and AMY2B) and a related pseudogene. The AMY1 genes show extensive copy number variation which is directly proportional to the salivary α-amylase content in saliva. The α-amylase amount in saliva is also influenced by other factors, such as hydration status, psychosocial stress level, and short-term dietary habits. It has been shown that the average copy number of AMY1 gene is higher in populations that evolved under high-starch diets versus low-starch diets, reflecting an intense positive selection imposed by diet on amylase copy number during evolution. In this context, a number of different aspects can be considered in evaluating the possible impact of copy number variation of the AMY1 gene on nutrition research, such as issues related to human diet gene evolution, action on starch digestion, effect on glycemic response after starch consumption, modulation of the action of α-amylases inhibitors, effect on taste perception and satiety, influence on psychosocial stress and relation to oral health.

Abstract
In this work, the degradation of anionic and non-ionic surfactants in agricultural soil amended with sewage sludge is reported. The compounds analysed were: linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) with a 10-13 carbon alkylic chain, and nonylphenolic compounds (NPE), including nonylphenol (NP) and nonylphenol ethoxylates with one and two ethoxy groups (NP1EO and NP2EO). The degradation studies were carried out under winter (12.7°C) and summer (22.4°C) conditions in Andalusia region. The concentration of LAS was reduced to 2% of the initial concentration 100 day after sludge-application to the soil. The half-life time measured for LAS homologues were ranged between 4 and 14days at 12.7°C and between 4 and 7 days at 22.4°C. With regard to NPE compounds, after 8 and 4days from the beginning of the experiment at 12.7 and 22.4°C, respectively, their concentration levels were increased to 6.5 and 13.5mg/kgdm (dry matter) as consequence of the degradation of nonylphenol polyethoxylates. These concentration levels were reduced to 5% after 63 and 70 days for 12.7°C and 22.4°C, respectively. The half-life times measured for NPEs were from 8 to 16 days at 12.7°C and from 8 to 18 days at 22.4°C. Environmental risk assessment revealed that for LAS homologues no environment risk could be expected after 7 and 8 days of sludge application to the soil for 22.4 and 12.7°C, respectively; however, potential toxic effects could be observed for the nonylphenolic compounds during the first 56 days after sludge application to the soil.

In this work the effectiveness of membrane bioreactors as advanced treatment on the removal of emergent and priority organic compounds in wastewater treatment plants has been evaluated during a one-year monitoring study. The studied wastewater treatment plant operates with flat sheet and hollow fibre membranes in two parallel lines. Moreover, a reverse osmosis module connected in series after the hollow fibre membrane was evaluated for one month. Comparison of membrane bioreactor and conventional activated sludge treatment was also investigated, as well as the influence of the physicochemical properties of the compounds on the removal rates achieved. Sixteen pharmaceutical compounds belonging to seven therapeutic groups and eight priority organic pollutants, including linear alkylbenzene sulfonates, nonylphenol and its ethoxylates and phthalate, were monitored. The highest mean concentrations corresponded to priority organic pollutants (309 μg L(-1) of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate C(12)) followed by pharmaceutical compounds (24.5 μg L(-1) of ibuprofen). No significant difference of effectiveness was found among flat sheet and hollow fibre membranes. However, an improvement was obtained with the addition of a reverse osmosis module for most of the compounds. Biodegradation has been shown as the main route involved in the removal of organic compounds during both technologies.

Abstract
The MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB), developed by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) initiative, has been recommended as the standard battery for clinical trials of cognition-enhancing interventions for schizophrenia. Normative data for the MCCB has been previously obtained in the U.S. Extrapolation of these normative data to different countries may be problematic due to the translation of the different tests, as well as potential cultural influences. We present the process of obtaining normative data for the MCCB in Spain with administration of the battery to a general community standardization sample. In addition, we examine the influence of age, gender, and educational level on test performance. The MCCB was administered to a total sample of 210 healthy volunteers, at three Spanish sites. For each site, recruitment of the sample was stratified according to age, gender, and educational level. Our findings indicate significant age, gender, and education effects on the normative data for the MCCB in Spain, which are comparable to those effects described for the original standardized English version in the U.S. The fact that the normative data are comparable, and that the variables age, gender, and education have a similar influence on performance, supports the robustness of the MCCB for use in different countries.

Abstract
Information concerning natural variation either in chiasma frequency or in the genetic basis of any such variation is a valuable tool to characterize phenotypic traits and their genetic control. Here meiotic recombination frequencies are analysed in nine geographically and ecologically diverse accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana, and a comparative study was carried out incorporating previous data from another eight accessions. Chiasma frequencies, estimated by counting rod and ring bivalents at metaphase I, varied up to 22% among accessions. However, no differences were found among plants of the same accession. There was a relationship, which does not necessarily imply direct proportionality, between the size of the chromosomes and their mean chiasma frequency. Chiasma frequency and distribution between arms and among chromosomes were not consistent over accessions. These findings indicate the existence of genetic factors controlling meiotic recombination both throughout the whole genome and at the whole chromosome level. The reliability of chiasma scoring as an indicator of reciprocal recombination events is also discussed.

Abstract
A 253 km ultralong remote displacement sensor system based on a fiber loop mirror interrogated by a commercial optical time-domain reflectometer is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The use of a fiber loop mirror increases the signal-to-noise ratio, allowing the system to interrogate sensors placed 253 km away from the monitoring system without using any optical amplification. The displacement sensor was based on a long period grating spliced inside of the loop mirror, which modifies the mirror reflectivity accordingly to the applied displacement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) patients show a deficit in sustained attention during euthymic periods. This deficit may be relevant for genetic studies in these patients. The α7 cholinergic receptor plays an important role in attentional deficit in humans and animal models. Moreover, there is evidence suggesting the role of the alpha 7 nicotinic cholinergic receptor subunit gene (CHRNA7) in BD susceptibility. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of CHRNA7 in sustained attention performance. METHODS We studied the association of a promoter variant (-86C/T) and three intronic polymorphisms, rs883473, rs6494223 and rs904952, in the non-duplicated region of CHRNA7 with sustained attention in 143 euthymic BD patients (based on DSM-IV criteria) and 101 healthy subjects. Sustained attention was assessed by the degraded stimulus (DS-CPT) version of Continuous Performance Test. Age, gender, years of education and IQ (WAIS vocabulary subtest) were controlled in the analyses as potential confounders. RESULTS Several candidate polymorphisms showed significant associations with different measures of the neuropsychological task for bipolar group. The CTCT haplotype was associated with an improvement in the attentional task performance in the BD group (p ≤ 0.025). On the other hand, different low frequency haplotypes showed influence in bipolar attentional performance (p ≤ 0.026). LIMITATIONS A replication study using larger samples may be required for conclusive results. CONCLUSIONS Our results point toward a slight association of CHRNA7 genotypes and haplotypes with sustained attention performance in euthymic patients with BD.

Abstract
We present a compact in-line fiber interferometric sensor fabricated in a boron doped two-mode highly birefringent microstructured fiber using a CO(2) laser. The intermodal interference arises at the fiber output due to coupling between the fundamental and the first order modes occurring at two fiber tapers distant by a few millimeters. The visibility of intermodal interference fringes is modulated by a polarimetric differential signal and varies in response to measurand changes. The proposed interferometer was tested for measurements of the strain and temperature, respectively, in the range of 20-700 °C and 0-17 mstrain. The sensitivity coefficients corresponding to fringe displacement and contrast variations are equal respectively for strain -2.51 nm/mstrain and -0.0256 1/mstrain and for temperature 16.7 pm/°C and 5.74×10(-5) 1/°C. This allows for simultaneous measurements of the two parameters by interrogation of the visibility and the displacement of interference fringes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Clear cell carcinoma (CCC) of the ovary is increasingly recognized as responding poorly to chemotherapy (CT). This review examines the outcomes achieved with a variety of CT regimens, looking for evidence of activity that might guide the development of more effective treatments. METHODS A retrospective chart review of all cases of CCC referred to the BC Cancer Agency (BCCA) between 2000 and 2008 was conducted. Data were collected from those with primarily advanced disease and from those who recurred after adjuvant treatment. Outcomes were measured using broad definitions of treatment benefit (any objective or subjective evidence of disease control) in order to reflect the real-life use of palliative therapy. RESULTS There were 158 women with pure CCC. First-line therapy for advanced disease was delivered to 33 patients. Second- and third-line treatment was delivered to 47 and 25 patients, respectively. The total number of treatment courses was 105: 88 CT-alone courses, 14 radiation therapy (RT)-alone and 3 combined modality. Treatment benefit was recorded in 24% of patients receiving CT, 64% of patients receiving RT, and each who received combined modality treatment. There was no CT drug class identified as obviously efficacious. CONCLUSION Most patients with advanced or recurrent CCC have a low benefit-to-failure ratio from palliative CT. The role of RT and targeted agents must be explored to improve clinical outcomes for such patients.

Abstract
A large-core air-clad photonic crystal fiber-based sensing structure is described, which is sensitive to refractive index. The sensing head is based on multimodal interference, and relies on a single-mode/large-core air-clad photonic crystal fiber (PCF)/single-mode fiber configuration. Using two distinct large-core air-clad PCF geometries-one for refractive index measurement and the other for temperature compensation, it was possible to implement a sensing head sensitive to refractive index changes in water as induced by temperature variations. The results indicated the high sensitivity of this sensing head to refractive index variations of water, and a resolution of 3.4×10(-5) refractive index units could be achieved.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Nowadays, it is accepted that to identify the biological basis of psychiatric illnesses it would be useful to deconstruct them into the most basic manifestations, such as cognitive deficits. The aim of this study was to set attention deficit as a stable vulnerability marker of bipolar disorder. METHOD Sustained attention was evaluated by the Continuous Performance Test (DS-CPT) in 143 euthymic bipolar patients and 105 controls. To estimate the influence of clinical profile in attention, patients completed a semi-structured interview. RESULTS Bipolar patients showed a deficit in attention during euthymic periods. This disturbance correlated with years of evolution, age of onset and age of first hospitalisation; and was not influenced by other clinical data. CONCLUSION Sustained attention may be considered as an endophenotype of the illness.

BACKGROUND To explore the influence of ovarian cancer histotype on the effectiveness of adjuvant radiotherapy (RT). METHODS A review of a population-based experience included all referred women with no reported macroscopic residuum following primary surgery who underwent adjuvant platin-based chemotherapy (CT), with or without sequential RT, and for whom it was possible to assign histotype according to the contemporary criteria. RESULTS Seven hundred and three subjects were eligible, of these 351 received RT. For those with apparent stage I and II tumors, the cohort with clear cell (C), endometrioid (E), and mucinous (M) disease who additionally received RT exhibited a 40% reduction in disease-specific mortality and a 43% reduction in overall mortality. CONCLUSIONS The curability of those with stage I and II C-, E-, and M-type ovarian carcinomas was enhanced by RT-containing adjuvant therapy. This benefit did not extend to those with stage III or serous tumors. These findings necessitate reassessments of the role of RT and of the nonselective surgical and CT approaches that have characterized ovarian cancer care.

Abstract
The field dependence of the optical transmission of tartrate-coated and polyaspartate-coated magnetite-based aqueous colloids was studied. The colloidal stock samples were diluted to prepare a series of samples containing different particle volume fractions ranging from 0.17% up to 1.52% and measured at distinct times after preparation (1, 30, 120, 240, and 1460 days). We show that the magneto-transmissivity behavior is mainly described by the rotation of linear chains, at the low-field range, whereas the analysis of the data provided the measurement of the average chain length. Results also reveal that the optical transmissivity has a minimum at a particular critical field, whose origin is related to the onset of columns of chains built from isolated particle chains, i.e., due to a columnar phase transition. We found the critical field reducing as the particle volume fraction increases and as the sample's aging time increases. To investigate the origin of this phenomenon we used phase condensation models and Mie's theory applied to a chain of spheres and to an infinite cylinder. Possible implications for magnetophotonic colloidal-based devices and biomedical applications were discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To screen for mutations in the coding region of the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) gene and to assess the association between the rs17782313 variant near MC4R with childhood obesity and eating behavior. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A cross-sectional sample of 221 obese Chilean children and 268 parents were incorporated in the study to assemble 134 case-parent trios. We performed direct sequencing of the MC4R coding region while the rs17782313 variant was genotyped by a Taqman assay. Eating behavior scores were calculated using the Child Eating Behavior and Three Factor Eating Questionnaires adapted for Chilean families. RESULTS A low frequency of genetic variation in the coding region of MC4R was found in Chilean obese children (Thr150Ile mutation and polymorphisms Ile251Leu and Val103Ile). The rs17782313 variant is possibly associated with satiety responsiveness (P = 0.01) and enjoyment of food scores (P = 0.03). CONCLUSION The rs17782313 variant may influence eating behavior in obese children.

Abstract
Meiotic pairing preferences between identical and homologous but not identical chromosomes were analyzed in ten induced tetraploid/diploid chimaeral rye plants (Secale cereale) heterozygous for telomeric heerochromatin C-bands in both arms of chromosome 1R. These plants were the progeny of two crosses between only one plant of cv. Petkus, used as male, and two plants of the inbred lines E and R, respectively. Different pairing preferences for chromosome 1R were found: (1) between plants, (2) between chromosome arms within the same plant and (3) between bivalents and multivalents within the same plant. The possible influence in the preferences of several factors such as differences in C-heterochromatin content in the chromosomes analyzed, specific genetic control and independence in pairing behavior between both arms and partner exchange is discussed.

Abstract
Among the emerging environmental contaminants, pharmaceutically active compounds have become a growing public concern because of their potential to cause undesirable ecological and human health effects. Doñana Park (South of Spain) includes a mosaic of unique ecosystems known around the world which is particularly affected by the quality of the incoming flowing water. This study reports the presence of a number of priority pharmaceuticals in wastewater and surface water samples from Doñana watersheds. In general, ibuprofen, naproxen, salicylic acid, propranolol, caffeine and gemfibrozil were the compounds most frequently found in all locations, in the range of ng/L to microg/L. Carbamazepine, with high potential risk to the environment, was also detected, although only in a few water samples. The main results are: (i) pharmaceuticals, as water pollutants, are continually discharged into Doñana water bodies and, owing to their biological activity, could lead to adverse effects in this outstanding aquatic ecosystem; (ii) wastewater treatments implemented in the area are insufficient to remove pharmaceuticals; and (iii) therefore, there is a requirement for better wastewater treatments in this natural area to reduce or avoid the presence of organic pollutants in general and pharmaceutical active compounds in particular. To the best of our knowledge, these data constitute the first measurements of pharmaceutical compounds in water not only from the protected area of Doñana Park but also from other Natural or National Parks in the world.

Abstract
In the present study, and as a sincere tribute from the Cytogenetics teams from Madrid to Professor Máximo Drets on his 80th birthday, we have analyzed and compared 3 different grasshopper species with different synaptic patterns, a standard pattern, a second pattern with synapsis restricted to the proximal regions, and a third pattern with synapsis restricted to the distal regions. In the 3 species we have thoroughly analyzed the relationships among cohesin axis morphogenesis, formation of double strand breaks (DSBs) and recombination initiation. Our results demonstrate that in every case recombination initiation precedes synapsis, and that there is a direct relationship between the absence of meiotic recombination and the existence of particular unsynapsed chromosomal regions during prophase I. Based on our results we propose and discuss the mechanisms underlying the existence of incomplete synapsis and the localization of chiasma in wild species.

Abstract
A CWDM network operating in reflective configuration for multiplexing remote Radio-Frequency (RF) self-referenced fiber-optic intensity sensors is analyzed and experimentally investigated. In the described approach, the use of fiber Bragg gratings as spectral selective mirrors allows to implement delay lines in the electrical domain, achieving more compact sensor-heads and easy-reconfigurable sensing points. Two measurement parameters for the sensing heads are defined and comparatively studied in terms of design parameters, linearity, sensitivity and resolution. The proposed sensor configuration is modeled following the Z-transform formalism, which permits an easy analysis of the system frequency response. Experimental results are presented, showing the characterization of the network performance and considering the properties of sensor self-referencing as well as sensor crosstalk.

Abstract
In the present work, the concentrations of the organic pollutants nonylphenol (NP) and nonylphenol mono- and diethoxylates (NP1EO and NP2EO, respectively) in primary, secondary, mixed, aerobically-digested, anaerobically-digested, dehydrated, compost and lagoon sludge samples from different sludge treatments have been evaluated. Toxicological risk assessment of these compounds in sludge and sludge-amended soil has also been reported. NP, NP1EO and NP2EO were monitored in sludge samples obtained from treatment plants located in Andalusia (south of Spain) based on anaerobic treatments (11 anaerobic-digestion wastewater treatment plants and 3 anaerobic wastewater stabilization ponds) or on aerobic treatments (3 aerobic-digestion wastewater treatment plants, 1 dehydration treatment plant and 2 composting plants). The sum of NP, NP1EO and NP2EO (NPE) concentrations has been evaluated in relation to the limit value of 50 mg/kg set by the European Union Sludge Directive draft published in April 2000 (Working Document on Sludge). In most of the samples, NP was present at higher concentration levels (mean value 88.0 mg/kg dm) than NP1EO (mean value 33.8 mg/kg dm) and NP2EO (mean value 14.0 mg/kg dm). The most contaminated samples were compost, anaerobically-digested sludge, lagoon sludge and aerobically-digested sludge samples, which contained NPE concentrations in the ranges 44-962 mg/kg dm, 8-669 mg/kg dm, 27-319 mg/kg dm and 61-282 mg/kg dm, respectively. Risk quotients, expressed as the ratios between environmental concentrations and the predicted no-effect concentrations, were higher than 1 for NP, NP1EO and NP2EO in the 99%, 92% and 36% of the studied samples, respectively; and higher than 1 in the 86%, 6% and 2%, respectively, after sludge application to soil, leading to a significant ecotoxicological risk mainly due to the presence of NP.

Four common polymorphisms of the LEPR gene (Lys109Arg, Gln223Arg, Ser343Ser, Lys656Asn) and 17 variants of the BDNF gene, including the Val66Met variant, were genotyped. RESULTS No significant case-control differences were found in allele/genotype frequencies after adjusting for relevant co-variates. Haplotype analysis did not detect any significant association between LEPR or BDNF variants and obesity. No associations were found between LEPR variants and serum leptin levels. CONCLUSIONS Our results do not support a major role of LEPR or BDNF common polymorphisms in multifactorial adult obesity.

Abstract
In this work, sensitivity to strain and temperature of a sensor relying on modal interferometry in hollow-core photonic crystal fibers is studied. The sensing structure is simply a piece of hollow-core fiber connected in both ends to standard single mode fiber. An interference pattern that is associated to the interference of light that propagates in the hollow core fundamental mode with light that propagates in other modes is observed. The phase of this interference pattern changes with the measurand interaction, which is the basis for considering this structure for sensing. The phase recovery is performed using a white light interferometric technique. Resolutions of +/- 1.4 microepsilon and +/- 0.2 degrees C were achieved for strain and temperature, respectively. It was also found that the fiber structure is not sensitive to curvature.

Abstract
A micrometric Fabry-Perot refractometer based on an end-of-fiber polymer tip is proposed. The fiber tip, with a length of 36 mum, was fabricated by self-guiding photopolymerization. The two-wave interferometric operation was achieved by combining the light waves generated at the interface between the single-mode fiber and the polymer tip, and at the fiber tip end (Fresnel reflection). The Fabry-Perot interferometer is coherence addressed and heterodyne interrogated, resulting into a liquid refractive index resolution of approximately 7.5x10(-4).
