Abstract
Soil properties influence greatly the status of vine plants which consequently influences the quality of wine. Therefore, in the context of viticulture management, it is extremely important to assess the physical and chemical parameters of vineyards soils. In this study, the soils of two vineyards were analysed by near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and established analytical reference procedures. The main objective of this study was to verify if NIR spectroscopy is a potential tool to discriminate the soils of both vineyards as well as to quantify differences of soil's parameters. For that, a total of eight sampling spots were selected at each vineyard taking into consideration the soil type and sampled at different depths. The data analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and partial least squares (PLS) regression. The ANOVA results revealed that 12 out of the 18 parameters analysed through the reference procedures can be considered statistically different (p < 0.05). Regarding PCA, the obtained results revealed a clear separation between the scores of both vineyards either considering NIR spectra or the chemical parameters. The PLS-DA model was able to obtain 100 % of correct predictions for the discrimination of both vineyards. PLS regression analysis using NIR spectra revealed R2P and RER values higher than 0.85 and 10, respectively, for 8 (pH (H2O), N, Ca2+, Mg2+, SB, CEC, ECEC and GSB) of the 18 chemical parameters evaluated. Concluding, these results demonstrate that it is possible to discriminate the soils of the different vineyards through NIR spectroscopy as well as to quantify several chemical parameters through soils NIR spectra in a rapid, accurate, cost-effective, simple and environmentally friendly way when compared to the reference procedures.

Abstract
This study was designed to characterize mice bone marrow (BM) and bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDC) and to compare the surface markers expression and inflammatory cytokine liberation in response to LPS and Bothrops jararacussu venom (BjV) stimulation. Typical morphology was observed in BM and BMDCs from the 4th up to the 8th day of culture using recombinant mouse GM-CSF and IL-4. A high basal level of MHC-II, CD1d, CD83, CD11c, CD80, and low CD86 was expressed by BM cells. After stimulation with GM-CSF/IL-4 for BMDCs differentiation, the BM cells differentiated into BMDCs presented MHC-II, CD1d, CD83, CD11c, CD86, and CD80 expression on the 4th - 8th day accompanied with high levels of TNF-α liberated. The difference between the surface markers' expression was observed in this time course in which CD1d, CD11c, and CD80 remained in high levels of expression, while MHC-II and CD83 showed moderate expression during the differentiation period. Also, cytokines liberation was monitored over the period of the BMDCs culture, and on the 6th day, low levels of IL-6 and IL-1β were found, while high levels of TNF-α on the 4th and 8th days, both of which contributed to the maturity of the BMDCs. Maturation of DCs with LPS showed significant upregulation of surface markers (MHC-II, CD1d, CD83, CD86, CD80) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α) liberation. On the other hand, BjV induced a decrease in CD1d, CD11c, CD83, and CD86 expression in mature BMDCs which was not observed when LPS was used to stimulate BMDCs which probably induces impairment in T-cell activation.

Abstract
In this study, an integrated flowsheet model of the continuous feeder-mixer system was calibrated, simulated and compared against experimental data. The feeding process was first investigated using two major components (ibuprofen and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC)), in a formulation comprised of: 30 wt% of ibuprofen, 67.5 wt% MCC, 2 wt% of sodium starch glycolate and 0.5 wt% of magnesium stearate. The impact of a refill on feeder performance was experimentally evaluated for different operating conditions. Results showed that it had no influence on feeder performance. While simulations with the feeder model fairly reproduced the material behaviour observed in the feeder, unintended disturbances were underpredicted due to the model's low complexity. Experimentally, mixer's efficiency was assessed based on ibuprofen residence time distribution. Mean residence time pointed to a higher mixer's efficiency at lower flow rates. Blend homogeneity results showed that for the entire set of experiments, ibuprofen RSD <5%, irrespective of process variables. A feeder-mixer flowsheet model was calibrated, after regressing the axial model coefficients. The regression curves exhibited a R2 above 0.96, whereas the RMSE varied from 1.58x10-4 to 1.06x10-3 s-1 across all fitted curves. Simulations confirmed that flowsheet model captured the powder dynamics inside the mixer and qualitatively predicted the mixer's filtering ability against feeding composition fluctuations, as well as ibuprofen RSD in blend, in line with real experiments.

Abstract
In situ amorphization is a promising approach, considered in the present work, to enhance the solubility and dissolution rate of olanzapine, while minimizing the exposure of the amorphous material to the stress conditions applied during conventional processing. The production of pellets by extrusion/spheronization and the coating of inert beads were investigated as novel methods to promote the co-amorphization of olanzapine, a poorly water-soluble drug, and saccharin. Samples were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and dissolution and stability testing. The co-amorphous produced were compared with crystalline olanzapine, or physical mixture of olanzapine and saccharin. Results suggested that the addition of water to mixtures containing olanzapine and saccharin during the production of pellets, and the coating of inert beads, induced the in situ co-amorphization of these substances. The coating of inert beads enhanced the solubility and dissolution rate of olanzapine, especially when compared to pellets coated with the crystalline drug, but also with pellets containing the co-amorphous entity in the matrix of beads. Nine months stability tests (23 °C/60% RH) confirmed the preservation of the solid-state properties of the co-amorphous form on/in pellets. Overall, results highlighted the feasibility and benefits of in situ co-amorphization, either when the drug was entrapped in the pellets matrix, or preferentially applied directly on the surface of pellets.

Abstract
Anthocyanins are among the best-known phenolic compounds and possess remarkable biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antidiabetic effects. Despite their therapeutic benefits, they are not widely used as health-promoting agents due to their instability, low absorption, and, thus, low bioavailability and rapid metabolism in the human body. Recent research suggests that the application of nanotechnology could increase their solubility and/or bioavailability, and thus their biological potential. Therefore, in this review, we have provided, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of in vitro and in vivo studies on nanocarriers used as delivery systems of anthocyanins, and their aglycones, i.e., anthocyanidins alone or combined with conventional drugs in the treatment or management of chronic diseases.

Abstract
Among the strategies for bioavailability improvement of poorly soluble drugs, co-amorphous systems have revealed to have a significant impact in the increase of the aqueous solubility of the drug, and at the same time increasing the amorphous state stability and dissolution rate when compared with the neat drug. Tolbutamide (TBM) is an oral hypoglycemic drug largely used in the treatment of type II Mellitus diabetes. TBM is a class II drug according to the Biopharmaceutical Classification System, meaning that it has low solubility and higher permeability. The aim of this study was to synthesize a co-amorphous material of tolbutamide (TBM) with tromethamine (TRIS). Density functional theory (DFT), allowed to study the structural, electronic, and thermodynamic properties, as well as solvation effects. In same theory level, several interactions tests were performed to obtain the most thermodynamically favorable drug-coformer intermolecular interactions. The vibrational spectra (mid infrared and Raman spectroscopy) are in accordance with the theoretical studies, showing that the main molecular interactions are due to the carbonyl, sulfonyl, and amide groups of TMB and the alcohol and amine groups of TRIS. X-ray powder diffraction was used to study the physical stability in dry condition at 25 °C of the co-amorphous system, indicating that the material remained in an amorphous state up to 90 days. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric results showed a high increase of the Tg when compared with the amorphous neat drug, from 4.3 °C to 83.7 °C, which generally translated into good physical stability. Solubilities studies demonstrated an increase in the solubility of TBM by 2.5 fold when compared with its crystalline counterpart.

Abstract
Iron-gall ink is one of the most important inks in the history of western civilization. The deep black colour results from Fe3+ complexes with phenolic compounds available in gall extracts. Unfortunately, it induces the degradation of both ink and support over time. Furthermore, our knowledge of these complex molecular structures is limited. This work aims to overcome this gap, revealing essential information about the complex structures of these pigments and dyes that will create a breakthrough in the next generation of conservation treatments. It presents the first in-depth phenolic identification and quantification of extracts and inks, prepared with and without gum arabic (an essential additive in medieval recipes). Five representative Iberian recipes were selected and prepared. Their phenolic profile was analysed by HPLC–DAD and HPLC–ESI–MS, which revealed that the phenolic compounds present in higher concentration, in the gall extracts, are pentagalloylglucose and hexagalloylglucose (0.15 ± 0.01–32 ± 3 mg/mL), except for one recipe, in which gallic acid is the main phenolic. The influence of the ingredients is also discussed by deconstructing the recipes: extracts of additives as pomegranate peel and solvents used in the extraction of the galls (vinegar and white wine) were characterized.

Abstract
The Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative condition with severe consequences interfering with patient quality of life. It is characterized as a progressive and irreversible brain disorder hampering memory and thinking, affecting the capacity to perform daily tasks leading to physical and cognitive incapacitation. The conventional treatment occurs by the oral route, but it presents relevant drawbacks such as low bioavailability, fast metabolism, limited brain exposure, and undesirable side effects. The intranasal route has been proposed as a promising alternative to deliver drugs and improve the Alzheimer's disease treatment. Still, there is not a clear alternative delivery system available in the market with advantageous bioavailability and safety. The aim of this review is to perform an overview on the strategies for drug intranasal delivery for Alzheimer's disease treatment. The advantages and disadvantages of this delivery route and the delivery systems developed so far are discussed. A special focus is given on the use of permeation enhancers, the types of intranasal drug delivery devices, as well as possible toxicity concerns.

Abstract
The implementation of near-infrared spectroscopy as an analytical method for the quantification of major wine parameters is limited due to the aqueous nature of wines. Water molecules contribute to a poor signal-to-noise ratio and to suppress important groups' vibrations frequencies, preventing the quantification of most chemical compounds present. This paper proposes an alternative approach for the quantification of major wine indicators based on near infrared spectroscopy using lyophilized wine samples. A diversity of wine samples, including red, white and rosé, were lyophilized and analyzed by NIR spectroscopy. The parameters quantified were: alcoholic degree, volumic mass, total dry extract, total sugars, total acidity, volatile acidity, pH, free sulfur dioxide and total sulfur dioxide. Calibrations using partial least squares (PLS) regression were performed against the results obtained by reference methods. Spectra collected within 10,000 to 4000 cm-1 range were randomly divided in two sets: one for the optimization of the PLS models and the remaining for external testing. The PLS models obtained were able to accurately quantify total sugars, pH, volumic mass and total dry extract with a range-error-ratio above 10. The quantification of the remaining parameters yielded unsatisfactory results. This methodology proved to be an interesting alternative for the quantification of major wine quality descriptors by circumventing the interference of water bands. Further studies exploring different lyophilization conditions and additional wine chemical compounds present at low concentrations are needed.

Abstract
Mutations and inadequate methylation profiles of CITED2 are associated with human congenital heart disease (CHD). In mouse, Cited2 is necessary for embryogenesis, particularly for heart development, and its depletion in embryonic stem cells (ESC) impairs cardiac differentiation. We have now determined that Cited2 depletion in ESC affects the expression of transcription factors and cardiopoietic genes involved in early mesoderm and cardiac specification. Interestingly, the supplementation of the secretome prepared from ESC overexpressing CITED2, during the onset of differentiation, rescued the cardiogenic defects of Cited2-depleted ESC. In addition, we demonstrate that the proteins WNT5A and WNT11 held the potential for rescue. We also validated the zebrafish as a model to investigate cited2 function during development. Indeed, the microinjection of morpholinos targeting cited2 transcripts caused developmental defects recapitulating those of mice knockout models, including the increased propensity for cardiac defects and severe death rate. Importantly, the co-injection of anti-cited2 morpholinos with either CITED2 or WNT5A and WNT11 recombinant proteins corrected the developmental defects of Cited2-morphants. This study argues that defects caused by the dysfunction of Cited2 at early stages of development, including heart anomalies, may be remediable by supplementation of exogenous molecules, offering the opportunity to develop novel therapeutic strategies aiming to prevent CHD.

Abstract
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is characterized by a rapid decline of renal function associated with worse outcomes. The purpose of the authors is to perform a critical review of the incidence, risk factors, pathogenesis and outcome of AKI in HIV-infected patients. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients have an increased risk of developing AKI, to which contribute both HIV-dependent and HIV-independent factors as well as the nephrotoxicity of drugs used. The increased risk of AKI in HIV-infected patients and its negative impact on prognosis highlights the need for identification of patients at risk, creation of prevention strategies and management. HIV-infected patients have an increased risk of developing AKI, to which both HIV-dependent and HIV-independent factors contribute, as well as the nephrotoxicity of drugs used. Abstract
BACKGROUND Citrus trees are among the most cultivated plants in the world, with a high economic impact. The wide sexual compatibility among relatives gave rise to a large number of hybrids that are difficult to discriminate. This work sought to explore the ability of infrared spectroscopy to discriminate among Citrus species and/or hybrids and to contribute to the elucidation of its relatedness. RESULTS Adult leaves of 18 distinct Citrus plants were included in this work. Near- and mid-infrared (NIR and FTIR) spectra were acquired from leaves after harvesting and a drying period of 1 month. Spectra were modelled by principal component analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis. Both techniques revealed a high discrimination potential (78.5-95.9%), being the best results achieved with NIR spectroscopy and air-dried leaves (95.9%). CONCLUSION Infrared spectroscopy was able to successfully discriminate several Citrus species and/or hybrids. Our results contributed also to enhance insights regarding the studied Citrus species and/or hybrids. Despite the benefit of including additional samples, the results herein obtained clearly pointed infrared spectroscopy as a reliable technique for Citrus species and/or hybrid discrimination. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Hop is one of the most important ingredients of beer production and several varieties are commercialized. Therefore, it is important to find an eco-real-time-friendly-low-cost technique to distinguish and discriminate hop varieties. This paper describes the development of a method based on vibrational spectroscopy techniques, namely near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy, for the discrimination of 33 commercial hop varieties. A total of 165 samples (five for each hop variety) were analysed by both techniques. Principal component analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis and partial least squares discrimination analysis were the chemometric tools used to discriminate positively the hop varieties. After optimizing the spectral regions and pre-processing methods a total of 94.2% and 96.6% correct hop varieties discrimination were obtained for near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy, respectively. The results obtained demonstrate the suitability of these vibrational spectroscopy techniques to discriminate different hop varieties and consequently their potential to be used as an authenticity tool. Compared with the reference procedures normally used for hops variety discrimination these techniques are quicker, cost-effective, non-destructive and eco-friendly.

Abstract
The establishment of matrix-assisted laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in routine microbial identification boosted many developments towards high-throughput applications, including bacterial typing. However, results are still controversial for different bacterial species. We aim to evaluate the suitability of MALDI-TOF MS for typing clinically relevant multidrug resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae clones using routine conditions and a previously validated chemometric analysis workflow. Mass spectra of 83 K. pneumoniae clinical isolates representing major human MDR clones [11 sequence types (STs), 22 PFGE-types] recovered in Portugal and Spain during outbreaks and non-outbreak situations (2003-2012) were obtained from cell extracts (CE) and intact cells (IC), and analysed with different chemometric tools. We observed a highly consistent peak pattern among isolates from different clones either with CE or IC, suggesting a high degree of conservation of biomolecules analysed (a large part corresponding to ribosomal proteins). Moreover, the low degree of agreement between MALDI-TOF MS and other methods (from 34.9 % to 43.4 % of correct assignments for CE and from 40.8 % to 70.1 % for IC) corroborates the low discriminatory potential of the technique at infraspecies level. Our results suggest a low discriminatory power of MALDI-TOF MS for clinically relevant MDR K. pneumoniae clones and highlight the need of developing tools for high-resolution typing in this species.

Abstract
RESUMO A literacia pré-escolar tem recebido uma crescente atenção. Neste estudo, participaram 70 crianças que iniciaram o 1.º ano de escolaridade no ano letivo 2009/10 e que, na educação pré-escolar, frequentaram três instituições com abordagens diferenciadas de leitura e de escrita. O estudo inclui quatro medidas repetidas no tempo nas áreas da fonologia, reconhecimento de letras, palavras e velocidade de leitura. Os resultados sugerem que a abordagem específica à leitura na educação pré-escolar condiciona o desempenho da leitura na instrução primária. Contudo, essa influência parece ser atenuada com o tempo. Por outro lado, verificou-se que sujeitos que receberam instrução direta de leitura em idade pré-escolar (mas não treino fonológico) obtêm resultados significativamente superiores em tarefas fonológicas aos de sujeitos que receberam treino fonológico prolongado (mas não de leitura).

Abstract
Spent coffee grounds (SCGs) are a great source of bioactive compounds with interest to pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Phenolics and methylxanthines are the main health related compounds present in SCG samples. Content estimation of these compounds in SCGs is of upmost importance in what concerns their profitable use by waste recovery industries. In the present work, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was proposed as a rapid and non-destructive technique to assess the content of three main phenolics (caffeic acid, (+)-catechin and chlorogenic acid) and three methylxanthines (caffeine, theobromine and theophylline) in SCG samples obtained from different coffee brands and diverse coffee machines. The content of these compounds was determined for 61 SCG samples by HPLC coupled with diode-array detection. Partial least squares (PLS) regression based models were calibrated to correlate diffuse reflectance NIR spectra against the reference data for the six parameters obtained by HPLC. Spectral wavelength selection and number of latent variables were optimized by minimizing the cross-validation error. PLS models showed good linearity with a coefficient of determination for the prediction set (Rp(2)) of 0.95, 0.92, 0.88, 071 and 0.84 for caffeine, caffeic acid, (+)-catechin, chlorogenic acid and theophylline, respectively. The range error ratio (RER) was higher for caffeine (17.8) when compared to other compounds (12.0, 10.1, 7.6 and 9.2, respectively for caffeic acid, (+)-catechin, chlorogenic acid and theophylline). Moreover, the content of caffeine could be used to predict the antioxidant properties of SCG samples (R=0.808, n=61), despite not presenting this property itself. The results obtained confirmed that NIRS is a suitable technique to screen SCG samples unveiling those with high content of bioactive compounds, which are interesting for subsequent extraction procedures.

Abstract
Cocrystals are defined as crystalline structures composed of two or more compounds that are solid at room temperature held together by noncovalent bonds. Their main advantages are the increase of solubility, bioavailability, permeability, stability, and at the same time retaining active pharmaceutical ingredient bioactivity. The cocrystallization between furosemide and nicotinamide by solvent evaporation was monitored on-line using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a process analytical technology tool. The near-infrared spectra were analyzed using principal component analysis. Batch statistical process monitoring was used to create control charts to perceive the process trajectory and define control limits. Normal and non-normal operating condition batches were performed and monitored with NIRS. The use of NIRS associated with batch statistical process models allowed the detection of abnormal variations in critical process parameters, like the amount of solvent or amount of initial components present in the cocrystallization.

Abstract
Accurate detection and quantification of microbiological contaminations remains an issue mainly due the lack of rapid and precise analytical techniques. Standard methods are expensive and time-consuming being associated to high economic losses and public health threats. In the context of pharmaceutical industry, the development of fast analytical techniques able to overcome these limitations is crucial and spectroscopic techniques might constitute a reliable alternative. In this work we proved the ability of Fourier transform near infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIRS) to detect and quantify bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus epidermidis) from 10 to 10(8) CFUs/mL in sterile saline solutions (NaCl 0.9%). Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSDA) models showed that FT-NIRS was able to discriminate between sterile and contaminated solutions for all bacteria as well as to identify the contaminant bacteria. Partial least squares (PLS) models allowed bacterial quantification with limits of detection ranging from 5.1 to 9 CFU/mL for E. coli and B. subtilis, respectively. This methodology was successfully validated in three pharmaceutical preparations (contact lens solution, cough syrup and topic anti-inflammatory solution) proving that this technique possess a high potential to be routinely used for the detection and quantification of bacterial contaminations.

Abstract
Identification of American cochineal species (Dactylopius genus) can provide important information for the study of historical works of art, entomology, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and foods. In this study, validated species of Dactylopius, including the domesticated cochineal D. coccus, were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) and submitted to multivariate data analysis, in order to discriminate the species and hence construct a reference library for a wide range of applications. Principal components analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSDA) models successfully provided accurate species classifications. This library was then applied to the identification of 72 historical insect specimens of unidentified species, mostly dating from the 19th century, and belonging to the Economic Botany Collection, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England. With this approach it was possible to identify anomalies in how insects were labelled historically, as several of them were revealed not to be cochineal. Nevertheless, more than 85% of the collection was determined to be species of Dactylopius and the majority of the specimens were identified as D. coccus. These results have shown that HPLC-DAD, in combination with suitable chemometric methods, is a powerful approach for discriminating related cochineal species.

Abstract
Industry has created the need for a cost-effective and nondestructive quality-control analysis system. This requirement has increased interest in near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, leading to the development and marketing of handheld devices that enable new applications that can be implemented in situ. Portable NIR spectrometers are powerful instruments offering several advantages for nondestructive, online, or in situ analysis: small size, low cost, robustness, simplicity of analysis, sample user interface, portability, and ergonomic design. Several studies of on-site NIR applications are presented: characterization of internal and external parameters of fruits and vegetables; conservation state and fat content of meat and fish; distinguishing among and quality evaluation of beverages and dairy products; protein content of cereals; evaluation of grape ripeness in vineyards; and soil analysis. Chemometrics is an essential part of NIR spectroscopy manipulation because wavelength-dependent scattering effects, instrumental noise, ambient effects, and other sources of variability may complicate the spectra. As a consequence, it is difficult to assign specific absorption bands to specific functional groups. To achieve useful and meaningful results, multivariate statistical techniques (essentially involving regression techniques coupled with spectral preprocessing) are therefore required to extract the information hidden in the spectra. This work reviews the evolution of the use of portable near-infrared spectrometers in the agro-food industry.

Abstract
This work describes the optimization of the recently proposed fluid management methodology single interface flow analysis (SIFA) using chemometrics modelling. The influence of the most important physical and hydrodynamic flow parameters of SIFA systems on the axial dispersion coefficients estimated with the axially dispersed plug-flow model, was evaluated with chemometrics linear (multivariate linear regression) and non-linear (simple multiplicative and feed-forward neural networks) models. A D-optimal experimental design built with three reaction coil properties (length, configuration and internal diameter), flow-cell volume and flow rate, was adopted to generate the experimental data. Bromocresol green was used as the dye solution and the analytical signals were monitored by spectrophotometric detection at 614 nm. Results demonstrate that, independent of the model type, the statistically relevant parameters were the reactor coil length and internal diameter and the flow rate. The linear and non-linear multiplicative models were able to estimate the axial dispersion coefficient with validation r(2)=0.86. Artificial neural networks estimated the same parameter with an increased accuracy (r(2)=0.93), demonstrating that relations between the physical parameters and the dispersion phenomena are highly non-linear. The analysis of the response surface control charts simulated with the developed models allowed the interpretation of the relationships between the physical parameters and the dispersion processes.

Abstract
A simple and rapid liquid chromatographic method with diode-array UV-vis spectrophotometric detection has been developed for the authentication of dragon's blood resins from Dracaena and Daemonorops trees. Using this method it was discovered that the flavylium chromophores, which contribute to the red colour of these resins, differ among the species and could be used as markers to differentiate among species. A study of parameters, such as time of extraction, proportion of MeOH and pH, was undertaken to optimise the extraction of the flavyliums. This method was then used to make extracts from samples of dragon's blood resin obtained from material of known provenance. From the samples analysed 7,6-dihydroxy-5-methoxyflavylium (dracorhodin), 7,4'-dihydroxy-5-methoxyflavylium (dracoflavylium) and 7,4'-dihydroxyflavylium were selected as species markers for Daemonorops spp., Dracaena draco and Dracaena cinnabari, respectively. The chromatograms from these samples were used to build an HPLC-DAD database. The ability to discriminate among species of dragon's blood using the single marker compounds was compared with a principal components analysis of the chromatograms in the HPLC-DAD database. The results from the HPLC-DAD method based on the presence of these flavylium markers was unequivocal. The HPLC-DAD method was subsequently applied to 37 samples of dragon blood resins from the historical samples in the Economic Botany Collection, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The method identified anomalies in how samples in this collection had been labelled. It is clear that the method can be used to evaluate the provenance of samples used in different areas of cultural heritage. It also could be used to monitor the trade of endangered species of dragon's blood and the species being used in complex formulations of traditional Chinese medicine.

Abstract
The application of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for industrial process monitoring is achieving increasing importance over the last twenty years. In fact, the real time monitoring capacity of NIR spectroscopy is a very important feature for process monitoring, prediction and control as it allows a fast evaluation of the state of the process. However, the application of NIR spectroscopy in wastewater treatment processes is still to be explored. Although some applications of the technique for wastewater monitoring have been reported in the literature, there is still a need for more investigation related with applications, limitations and advantages of the technique when compared with other methods. An activated sludge reactor for aerobic treatment of a complex medium was monitored in situ with a NIR transflectance probe and traditional chemical parameters analysed off-line. NIR spectrophotometric data measured at the feed, reactor and settler were coupled to principal component analysis (PCA) to infer about the ability of this monitoring system to detect changes in the feed influent. The analysis of the score plots resulting from PCA permitted to identify the moments at which the perturbations occurred and to follow the consequent instability induced in the reactor till the day where the system is recuperated. The promising results obtained, suggest the interest in more detailed studies on the feasibility of NIR spectroscopy as an alternative method for monitoring and control of wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract
Several multivariate statistical techniques have been extensively proposed for monitoring industrial processes. In this paper, multiway extensions of two such techniques: multiway principal component analysis (MPCA) and multiway partial least squares regression (MPLS) were applied to a large data set from an industrial pilot-scale fermentation process to improve process knowledge. The MPCA model is able to diagnose faults occurring in the process whether they affect or not process productivity while the MPLS model enables the prediction of final product concentration and the detection of faults that will influence the fermentation productivity.

Abstract
Posterior reversible encephalopathy (PRES) is a recently described syndrome, defined by clinical and neuroimaging features. Chronic kidney disease patients may be especially vulnerable to this syndrome because they are frequently exposed to several of its possible causes, including uremia and hypertension. In its most severe form, PRES can manifest clinically as seizures, coma or death. However, if properly diagnosed and treated, this syndrome can be completely reversible. Therefore, neuroimaging methods, especially brain magnetic resonance is fundamental for its diagnosis because it shows brain edema in characteristic pattern, and excludes causes of seizures or coma. An important example is the case of a young hypertensive chronic kidney disease patient on peritoneal dialysis, brought to the emergency room comatous with generalized tonic-clonic seizures; the cerebral magnetic resonance imaging features were impressive. Anti-hypertensive therapy and hemodialysis allowed complete recovery. The reversibility of this syndrome depends on timely diagnosis and therapy and therefore it should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of seizures. or coma in chronic kidney disease patients.
