Substantially Accelerated Response and Recovery in Pd-Decorated WO3 Nanorods Gasochromic Hydrogen Sensor

The development of hydrogen (H2) gas sensors is essential for the safe and efficient adoption of H2 gas as a clean, renewable energy source in the challenges against climate change, given its flammability and associated safety risks. Among various H2 sensors, gasochromic sensors have attracted great interest due to their highly intuitive and low power operation, but slow kinetics, especially slow recovery rate limited its further practical application. This study introduces Pd-decorated amorphous WO3 nanorods (Pd-WO3 NRs) as an innovative gasochromic H2 sensor, demonstrating rapid and highly reversible color changes for H2 detection. In specific, the amorphous nanostructure exhibits notable porosity, enabling rapid detection and recovery by facilitating effective H2 gas interaction and efficient diffusion of hydrogen ions (H+) dissociated from the Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs). The optimized Pd-WO3 NRs sensor achieves an impressive response time of 14 s and a recovery time of 1 s to 5% H2. The impressively fast recovery time of 1 s is observed under a wide range of H2 concentrations (0.2-5%), making this study a fundamental solution to the challenged slow recovery of gasochromic H2 sensors.

Remote Epitaxy: Fundamentals, Challenges, and Opportunities

Advanced heterogeneous integration technologies are pivotal for next-generation electronics. Single-crystalline materials are one of the key building blocks for heterogeneous integration, although it is challenging to produce and integrate these materials. Remote epitaxy is recently introduced as a solution for growing single-crystalline thin films that can be exfoliated from host wafers and then transferred onto foreign platforms. This technology has quickly gained attention, as it can be applied to a wide variety of materials and can realize new functionalities and novel application platforms. Nevertheless, remote epitaxy is a delicate process, and thus, successful execution of remote epitaxy is often challenging. Here, we elucidate the mechanisms of remote epitaxy, summarize recent breakthroughs, and discuss the challenges and solutions in the remote epitaxy of various material systems. We also provide a vision for the future of remote epitaxy for studying fundamental materials science, as well as for functional applications.

Data-centric artificial olfactory system based on the eigengraph

Recent studies of electronic nose system tend to waste significant amount of important data in odor identification. Until now, the sensitivity-oriented data composition has made it difficult to discover meaningful data to apply artificial intelligence in terms of in-depth analysis for odor attributes specifying the identities of gas molecules, ultimately resulting in hindering the advancement of the artificial olfactory technology. Here, we realize a data-centric approach to implement standardized artificial olfactory systems inspired by human olfactory mechanisms by formally defining and utilizing the concept of Eigengraph in electrochemisty. The implicit odor attributes of the eigengraphs were mathematically substantialized as the Fourier transform-based Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient feature vectors. Their effectiveness and applicability in deep learning processes for gas classification have been clearly demonstrated through experiments on complex mixed gases and automobile exhaust gases. We suggest that our findings can be widely applied as source technologies to develop standardized artificial olfactory systems.

MAPbBr3 Halide Perovskite-Based Resistive Random-Access Memories Using Electron Transport Layers for Long Endurance Cycles and Retention Time

Recent studies have focused on exploring the potential of resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) utilizing halide perovskites as novel data storage devices. This interest stems from its notable attributes, including a high ON/OFF ratio, low operating voltages, and exceptional mechanical properties. Nevertheless, there have been reports indicating that memory systems utilizing halide perovskites encounter certain obstacles pertaining to their stability and dependability, mostly assessed through endurance and retention time. Moreover, the presence of these problems can potentially restrict their practical applicability. This study explores a resistive switching memory device utilizing MAPbBr3 perovskite, which demonstrates bipolar switching characteristics. The device fabrication procedure involves a low-temperature, all-solution process. For the purpose of enhancing the device's reliability, the utilization of TPBI(2,2',2″-(1,3,5-benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) as an electron transfer material on the MAPbBr3 switching layer was implemented for the first time. The formation and rupture of Ag filaments in the MAPbBr3 perovskite switching layer are attributed to reduction-oxidation reactions. The TPBI is involved in the regulation of filaments during the SET and RESET processes. Hence, it can be shown that the MAPbBr3 device incorporating TPBI exhibited about 1000 endurance cycles when subjected to continuous voltage pulses. Moreover, the device consistently maintained ON/OFF ratios above 107. In contrast, the original MAPbBr3 device without TPBI demonstrated a significantly lower endurance with only 90 cycles observed. In addition, the MAPbBr3 device integrated with TPBI exhibited a retention time exceeding 3 × 103 s. The findings of this research provide compelling evidence to support the notion that electron transfer materials have promise for the development of halide perovskite memory systems owing to their favorable attributes of dependability and stability.

Monolithic 3D integration of 2D materials-based electronics towards ultimate edge computing solutions

Three-dimensional (3D) hetero-integration technology is poised to revolutionize the field of electronics by stacking functional layers vertically, thereby creating novel 3D circuity architectures with high integration density and unparalleled multifunctionality. However, the conventional 3D integration technique involves complex wafer processing and intricate interlayer wiring. Here we demonstrate monolithic 3D integration of two-dimensional, material-based artificial intelligence (AI)-processing hardware with ultimate integrability and multifunctionality. A total of six layers of transistor and memristor arrays were vertically integrated into a 3D nanosystem to perform AI tasks, by peeling and stacking of AI processing layers made from bottom-up synthesized two-dimensional materials. This fully monolithic-3D-integrated AI system substantially reduces processing time, voltage drops, latency and footprint due to its densely packed AI processing layers with dense interlayer connectivity. The successful demonstration of this monolithic-3D-integrated AI system will not only provide a material-level solution for hetero-integration of electronics, but also pave the way for unprecedented multifunctional computing hardware with ultimate parallelism.

Remote epitaxial interaction through graphene

The concept of remote epitaxy involves a two-dimensional van der Waals layer covering the substrate surface, which still enable adatoms to follow the atomic motif of the underlying substrate. The mode of growth must be carefully defined as defects, e.g., pinholes, in two-dimensional materials can allow direct epitaxy from the substrate, which, in combination with lateral epitaxial overgrowth, could also form an epilayer. Here, we show several unique cases that can only be observed for remote epitaxy, distinguishable from other two-dimensional material-based epitaxy mechanisms. We first grow BaTiO3 on patterned graphene to establish a condition for minimizing epitaxial lateral overgrowth. By observing entire nanometer-scale nuclei grown aligned to the substrate on pinhole-free graphene confirmed by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, we visually confirm that remote epitaxy is operative at the atomic scale. Macroscopically, we also show variations in the density of GaN microcrystal arrays that depend on the ionicity of substrates and the number of graphene layers.

High-throughput manufacturing of epitaxial membranes from a single wafer by 2D materials-based layer transfer process

Layer transfer techniques have been extensively explored for semiconductor device fabrication as a path to reduce costs and to form heterogeneously integrated devices. These techniques entail isolating epitaxial layers from an expensive donor wafer to form freestanding membranes. However, current layer transfer processes are still low-throughput and too expensive to be commercially suitable. Here we report a high-throughput layer transfer technique that can produce multiple compound semiconductor membranes from a single wafer. We directly grow two-dimensional (2D) materials on III-N and III-V substrates using epitaxy tools, which enables a scheme comprised of multiple alternating layers of 2D materials and epilayers that can be formed by a single growth run. Each epilayer in the multistack structure is then harvested by layer-by-layer mechanical exfoliation, producing multiple freestanding membranes from a single wafer without involving time-consuming processes such as sacrificial layer etching or wafer polishing. Moreover, atomic-precision exfoliation at the 2D interface allows for the recycling of the wafers for subsequent membrane production, with the potential for greatly reducing the manufacturing cost.

Drastic Gas Sensing Selectivity in 2-Dimensional MoS2 Nanoflakes by Noble Metal Decoration

Noble metal nanoparticle decoration is a representative strategy to enhance selectivity for fabricating chemical sensor arrays based on the 2-dimensional (2D) semiconductor material, represented by molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂). However, the mechanism of selectivity tuning by noble metal decoration on 2D materials has not been fully elucidated. Here, we successfully decorated noble metal nanoparticles on MoS₂ flakes by the solution process without using reducing agents. The MoS₂ flakes showed drastic selectivity changes after surface decoration and distinguished ammonia, hydrogen, and ethanol gases clearly, which were not observed in general 3D metal oxide nanostructures. The role of noble metal nanoparticle decoration on the selectivity change is investigated by first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. While the H₂ sensitivity shows a similar tendency with the calculated binding energy, that of NH₃ is strongly related to the binding site deactivation due to preferred noble metal particle decoration at the MoS₂ edge. This finding is a specific phenomenon which originates from the distinguished structure of the 2D material, with highly active edge sites. We believe that our study will provide the fundamental comprehension for the strategy to devise the highly efficient sensor array based on 2D materials.

Graphene nanopattern as a universal epitaxy platform for single-crystal membrane production and defect reduction

Heterogeneous integration of single-crystal materials offers great opportunities for advanced device platforms and functional systems¹. Although substantial efforts have been made to co-integrate active device layers by heteroepitaxy, the mismatch in lattice polarity and lattice constants has been limiting the quality of the grown materials². Layer transfer methods as an alternative approach, on the other hand, suffer from the limited availability of transferrable materials and transfer-process-related obstacles³. Here, we introduce graphene nanopatterns as an advanced heterointegration platform that allows the creation of a broad spectrum of freestanding single-crystalline membranes with substantially reduced defects, ranging from non-polar materials to polar materials and from low-bandgap to high-bandgap semiconductors. Additionally, we unveil unique mechanisms to substantially reduce crystallographic defects such as misfit dislocations, threading dislocations and antiphase boundaries in lattice- and polarity-mismatched heteroepitaxial systems, owing to the flexibility and chemical inertness of graphene nanopatterns. More importantly, we develop a comprehensive mechanics theory to precisely guide cracks through the graphene layer, and demonstrate the successful exfoliation of any epitaxial overlayers grown on the graphene nanopatterns. Thus, this approach has the potential to revolutionize the heterogeneous integration of dissimilar materials by widening the choice of materials and offering flexibility in designing heterointegrated systems.

Chip-less wireless electronic skins by remote epitaxial freestanding compound semiconductors

Recent advances in flexible and stretchable electronics have led to a surge of electronic skin (e-skin)-based health monitoring platforms. Conventional wireless e-skins rely on rigid integrated circuit chips that compromise the overall flexibility and consume considerable power. Chip-less wireless e-skins based on inductor-capacitor resonators are limited to mechanical sensors with low sensitivities. We report a chip-less wireless e-skin based on surface acoustic wave sensors made of freestanding ultrathin single-crystalline piezoelectric gallium nitride membranes. Surface acoustic wave-based e-skin offers highly sensitive, low-power, and long-term sensing of strain, ultraviolet light, and ion concentrations in sweat. We demonstrate weeklong monitoring of pulse. These results present routes to inexpensive and versatile low-power, high-sensitivity platforms for wireless health monitoring devices.

Visible Light Driven Ultrasensitive and Selective NO2 Detection in Tin Oxide Nanoparticles with Sulfur Doping Assisted by l-Cysteine

In the pandemic era, the development of high-performance indoor air quality monitoring sensors has become more critical than ever. NO₂ is one of the most toxic gases in daily life, which induces severe respiratory diseases. Thus, the real-time monitoring of low concentrations of NO₂ is highly required. Herein, a visible light-driven ultrasensitive and selective chemoresistive NO₂ sensor is presented based on sulfur-doped SnO₂ nanoparticles. Sulfur-doped SnO₂ nanoparticles are synthesized by incorporating l-cysteine as a sulfur doping agent, which also increases the surface area. The cationic and anionic doping of sulfur induces the formation of intermediate states in the band gap, highly contributing to the substantial enhancement of gas sensing performance under visible light illumination. Extraordinary gas sensing performances such as the gas response of 418 to 5 ppm of NO₂ and a detection limit of 0.9 ppt are achieved under blue light illumination. Even under red light illumination, sulfur-doped SnO₂ nanoparticles exhibit stable gas sensing. The endurance to humidity and long-term stability of the sensor are outstanding, which amplify the capability as an indoor air quality monitoring sensor. Overall, this study suggests an innovative strategy for developing the next generation of electronic noses.

Artificial Adaptive and Maladaptive Sensory Receptors Based on a Surface-Dominated Diffusive Memristor

A biological receptor serves as sensory transduction from an external stimulus to an electrical signal. It allows humans to better match the environment by filtering out repetitive innocuous information and recognize potentially damaging stimuli through key features, including adaptive and maladaptive behaviors. Herein, for the first time, the authors develop substantial artificial receptors involving both adaptive and maladaptive behaviors using diffusive memristor. Metal-oxide nanorods (NR) as a switching matrix enable the electromigration of an active metal along the surface of the NRs under electrical stimulation, resulting in unique surface-dominated switching dynamics with the advantage of fast Ag migration and fine controllability of the conductive filament. To experimentally demonstrate its potential application, a thermoreceptor system is constructed using memristive artificial receptors. The proposed surface-dominated diffusive memristor allows the direct emulation of the biological receptors, which represents an advance in the bioinspired technology adopted in creating artificial intelligence systems.

Architecture engineering of nanostructured catalyst via layer-by-layer adornment of multiple nanocatalysts on silica nanorod arrays for hydrogenation of nitroarenes

Direct consideration for both, the catalytically active species and the host materials provides highly efficient strategies for the architecture design of nanostructured catalysts. The conventional wet chemical methods have limitations in achieving such unique layer-by-layer design possessing one body framework with many catalyst parts. Herein, an innovative physical method is presented that allows the well-regulated architecture design for an array of functional nanocatalysts as exemplified by layer-by-layer adornment of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) on the highly arrayed silica nanorods. This spatially confined catalyst exhibits excellent efficiency for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes and widely deployed Suzuki cross-coupling reactions; their facile separation from the reaction mixtures is easily accomplished due to the monolithic structure. The generality of this method for the introduction of other metal source has also been demonstrated with Au NPs. This pioneering effort highlights the feasibility of physically controlled architecture design of nanostructured catalysts which may stimulate further studies in the general domain of the heterogeneous catalytic transformations.

Rationally Designed TiO2 Nanostructures of Continuous Pore Network for Fast-Responding and Highly Sensitive Acetone Sensor

For the last several years, indoor air quality monitoring has been a significant issue due to the increasing time portion of indoor human activities. Especially, the early detection of volatile organic compounds potentially harmful to the human body by the prolonged exposure is the primary concern for public human health, and such technology is imperatively desired. In this study, highly porous and periodic 3D TiO₂ nanostructures are designed and studied for this concern. Specifically, extremely high gas molecule accessibility throughout the whole nanostructures and precisely controlled internecks of 3D TiO₂ nanostructures can achieve an unprecedented gas response of 299 to 50 ppm CH₃ COCH₃ with an extremely fast response time of less than 1s. The systematic approach to utilize the whole inner and outer surfaces of the gas sensing materials and periodically formed internecks to localize the current paths in this study can provide highly promising perspectives to advance the development of chemoresistive gas sensors using metal oxide nanostructures for the Internet of Everything application.

Long-term reliable physical health monitoring by sweat pore-inspired perforated electronic skins

Electronic skins (e-skins)-electronic sensors mechanically compliant to human skin-have long been developed as an ideal electronic platform for noninvasive human health monitoring. For reliable physical health monitoring, the interface between the e-skin and human skin must be conformal and intact consistently. However, conventional e-skins cannot perfectly permeate sweat in normal day-to-day activities, resulting in degradation of the intimate interface over time and impeding stable physical sensing. Here, we present a sweat pore-inspired perforated e-skin that can effectively suppress sweat accumulation and allow inorganic sensors to obtain physical health information without malfunctioning. The auxetic dumbbell through-hole patterns in perforated e-skins lead to synergistic effects on physical properties including mechanical reliability, conformability, areal mass density, and adhesion to the skin. The perforated e-skin allows one to laminate onto the skin with consistent homeostasis, enabling multiple inorganic sensors on the skin to reliably monitor the wearer's health over a period of weeks.

Microscopic evidence of strong interactions between chemical vapor deposited 2D MoS2 film and SiO2 growth template

Two-dimensional MoS2 film can grow on oxide substrates including Al2O3 and SiO2. However, it cannot grow usually on non-oxide substrates such as a bare Si wafer using chemical vapor deposition. To address this issue, we prepared as-synthesized and transferred MoS2 (AS-MoS2 and TR-MoS2) films on SiO2/Si substrates and studied the effect of the SiO2 layer on the atomic and electronic structure of the MoS2 films using spherical aberration-corrected scanning transition electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The interlayer distance between MoS2 layers film showed a change at the AS-MoS2/SiO2 interface, which is attributed to the formation of S-O chemical bonding at the interface, whereas the TR-MoS2/SiO2 interface showed only van der Waals interactions. Through STEM and EELS studies, we confirmed that there exists a bonding state in addition to the van der Waals force, which is the dominant interaction between MoS2 and SiO2. The formation of S-O bonding at the AS-MoS2/SiO2 interface layer suggests that the sulfur atoms at the termination layer in the MoS2 films are bonded to the oxygen atoms of the SiO2 layer during chemical vapor deposition. Our results indicate that the S-O bonding feature promotes the growth of MoS2 thin films on oxide growth templates.

Optically Activated 3D Thin-Shell TiO2 for Super-Sensitive Chemoresistive Responses: Toward Visible Light Activation

One of the well-known strategies for achieving high-performance light-activated gas sensors is to design a nanostructure for effective surface responses with its geometric advances. However, no study has gone beyond the benefits of the large surface area and provided fundamental strategies to offer a rational structure for increasing their optical and chemical performances. Here, a new class of UV-activated sensing nanoarchitecture made of highly periodic 3D TiO2, which facilitates 55 times enhanced light absorption by confining the incident light in the nanostructure, is prepared as an active gas channel. The key parameters, such as the total 3D TiO2 film and thin-shell thicknesses, are precisely optimized by finite element analysis. Collectively, this fundamental design leads to ultrahigh chemoresistive response to NO2 with a theoretical detection limit of ≈200 ppt. The demonstration of high responses with visible light illumination proposes a future perspective for light-activated gas sensors based on semiconducting oxides.

Chemical Sensors Based on Two-Dimensional (2D) Materials for Selective Detection of Ions and Molecules in Liquid

Up until now, two-dimensional (2D) materials have been researched vigorously for application to sensing ions and molecules in liquid due to their unique structural, chemical, and electronic properties. Features of 2D materials such as high surface area-to-volume ratios and various reaction sites are ideal characteristics for fabricating state-of-the-art high-performed chemical sensors. This review particularly focuses on the detection of pH, metal ions, and biomolecules in liquid media. The final goal of the ion/molecule sensors is a development of the electronic tongue or taste sensors that can be used in medical, food, biotechnology, and health applications. Herein, we introduce recent advances in the field of ion/molecule sensors in liquid media based on 2D materials, especially concentrating in graphene and MoS₂, and will emphasize the opportunities and challenges of these unique sensing materials and devices.

Ionic-Activated Chemiresistive Gas Sensors for Room-Temperature Operation

The development of high performance gas sensors that operate at room temperature has attracted considerable attention. Unfortunately, the conventional mechanism of chemiresistive sensors is restricted at room temperature by insufficient reaction energy with target molecules. Herein, novel strategy for room temperature gas sensors is reported using an ionic-activated sensing mechanism. The investigation reveals that a hydroxide layer is developed by the applied voltages on the SnO₂ surface in the presence of humidity, leading to increased electrical conductivity. Surprisingly, the experimental results indicate ideal sensing behavior at room temperature for NO₂ detection with sub-parts-per-trillion (132.3 ppt) detection and fast recovery (25.7 s) to 5 ppm NO₂ under humid conditions. The ionic-activated sensing mechanism is proposed as a cascade process involving the formation of ionic conduction, reaction with a target gas, and demonstrates the novelty of the approach. It is believed that the results presented will open new pathways as a promising method for room temperature gas sensors.

Two-Dimensional NbS2 Gas Sensors for Selective and Reversible NO2 Detection at Room Temperature

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted enormous attention in diverse research fields. Especially, gas sensors are considered in a promising application exploiting TMDs. However, the studies are confined to only major TMDs such as MoS₂ and WS₂. Particularly, the chemoresistive sensing properties of two-dimensional (2D) NbS₂ have never been explored. For the first time, we report room temperature NO₂ sensing characteristics of 2D NbS₂ nanosheets and the sensing mechanisms using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. The results demonstrate that the NbS₂ edges possessing different configurations depending on synthetic conditions differ in the sensing ability of the TMD nanosheets. This study not only broadens the potential of 2D NbS₂ for gas sensing applications, but also presents the important role of edge configuration of TMDs depending on synthetic conditions for further studies.

Daylight-Induced Metal-Insulator Transition in Ag-Decorated Vanadium Dioxide Nanorod Arrays

Metal-insulator transition (MIT) in strongly correlated electronic materials has enormous potential with scientific and technological impacts in future oxide nanoelectronic devices. Although photo-induced MIT can provide opportunities to extend the novel functionality of strongly correlated electronic materials, there have rarely been reports on it. Here, we report MIT provoked by visible-near-infrared light in Ag-decorated VO₂ nanorod arrays (NRs) because of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and its application to broadband photodetectors. Our simulation results based on the finite-difference time-domain method show that the electric field resulting from LSPR can be generated at the interface between Ag nanoparticles and VO₂ layers under vis NIR illumination. Using high-resolution transmission electronic microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, we observe the MIT and structural phase transition in the Ag-decorated VO₂ NRs due to the LSPR effect. The optoelectronic measurements confirm that high, fast, and broad photoresponse of Ag-decorated VO₂ NRs is attributed to photo-induced MIT due to LSPR. Our study will open up a new strategy to trigger MIT in strongly correlated electronic materials through functionalization with plasmonic nanoparticles and serve as a valuable proof of concept for next-generation optoelectronic devices with fast response, low power consumption, and high performance.

SnS2 Nanograins on Porous SiO2 Nanorods Template for Highly Sensitive NO2 Sensor at Room Temperature with Excellent Recovery

In order to develop high performance chemoresistive gas sensors for Internet of Everything applications, low power consumption should be achieved due to the limited battery capacity of portable devices. One of the most efficient ways to reduce power consumption is to lower the operating temperature to room temperature. Herein, we report superior gas sensing properties of SnS₂ nanograins on SiO₂ nanorods toward NO₂ at room temperature. The gas response is as high as 701% for 10 ppm of NO₂ with excellent recovery characteristics and the theoretical detection limit is evaluated to be 408.9 ppb at room temperature, which has not been reported for SnS₂-based gas sensors to the best of our knowledge. The SnS₂ nanograins on the template used in this study have excessive sulfur component (Sn:S = 1:2.33) and exhibit p-type conduction behavior. These results will provide a new perspective of nanostructured two-dimensional materials for gas sensor applications on demand.

Copper oxide-graphene oxide nanocomposite: efficient catalyst for hydrogenation of nitroaromatics in water

A low-cost nanocomposite catalyst containing copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) on graphene oxide (GO) was fabricated by a facile hydrothermal self-assembly process. The segregated CuO NPs and GO exhibited negligible catalytic activities for the reduction of nitroaromatics. However, their hybrid composite accomplished facile reduction with high conversions for several substituted nitroaromatics in aqueous NaBH4 solution; synergetic coupling effect of CuO NPs with GO in the nanocomposite catalyst provided excellent catalytic activity. The nanocomposite catalyst could be separated from the reaction mixture and recycled consecutively.

Morphological Evolution Induced through a Heterojunction of W-Decorated NiO Nanoigloos: Synergistic Effect on High-Performance Gas Sensors

Morphological evolution accompanying a surface roughening and preferred orientation is an effective way to realize a high-performance gas sensor because of its significant potential as a chemical catalyst through chemical potentials and atomic energy states. In this work, we investigated a heterojunction of double-side-W-decorated NiO nanoigloos fabricated through radio frequency sputtering and a soft-template method. Interestingly, a morphological evolution characterized by a pyramidal rough surface and the preferred orientation of the (111) plane was observed upon decorating the bare NiO nanoigloos with W. The underlying mechanism of the morphological evolution was precisely demonstrated based on the van der Drift competitive growth model originating from the oxygen transport and chemical strain in the lattice. The gas sensing properties of W-decorated NiO show an excellent NO₂ response and selectivity when compared to other gases. In addition, high response stability was evaluated under interference gas and humidity conditions. The synergistic effects on the sensing performance were interpreted on the basis of the morphological evolution of W-decorated NiO nanoigloos.

Recent Advances in the Nanocatalysts-assisted NaBH4 Reduction of Nitroaromatics in water

In view of the increasing applications of nanocatalysis in chemical transformations, this article illustrates recent advances on the use of nanocatalysts for an important reduction reaction, the hydrogenation of nitroaromatics to significant aminoaromatics with aqueous NaBH₄ solution; the utility of mono- and multi-metal nanocatalysts with special emphasis on heterogeneous nanocatalysts are included. A progressive trend on the applicability of nanocatalysts is also incorporated with large scale application and their sustainable recyclization and reuse utilizing supported and magnetic nanocatalysts; representative methods for the synthesis of such reusable nanocatalysts are featured.

Synthesis of Numerous Edge Sites in MoS2 via SiO2 Nanorods Platform for Highly Sensitive Gas Sensor

The utilization of edge sites in two-dimensional materials including transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is an effective strategy to realize high-performance gas sensors because of their high catalytic activity. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy to synthesize the numerous edge sites of vertically aligned MoS₂ and larger surface area via SiO₂ nanorod (NRs) platforms for highly sensitive NO₂ gas sensor. The SiO₂ NRs encapsulated by MoS₂ film with numerous edge sites and partially vertical-aligned regions synthesized using simple thermolysis process of [(NH₄)₂MoS₄]. Especially, the vertically aligned MoS₂ prepared on 500 nm thick SiO₂ NRs (500MoS₂) shows approximately 90 times higher gas-sensing response to 50 ppm NO₂ at room temperature than the MoS₂ film prepared on flat SiO₂, and the theoretical detection limit is as low as ∼2.3 ppb. Additionally, it shows reliable operation with reversible response to NO₂ gas without degradation at an operating temperature of 100 °C. The use of the proposed facile approach to synthesize vertically aligned TMDs using nanostructured platform can be extended for various TMD-based devices including sensors, water splitting catalysts, and batteries.

p-p Heterojunction of Nickel Oxide-Decorated Cobalt Oxide Nanorods for Enhanced Sensitivity and Selectivity toward Volatile Organic Compounds

The utilization of p-p isotype heterojunctions is an effective strategy to enhance the gas sensing properties of metal-oxide semiconductors, but most previous studies focused on p-n heterojunctions owing to their simple mechanism of formation of depletion layers. However, a proper choice of isotype semiconductors with appropriate energy bands can also contribute to the enhancement of the gas sensing performance. Herein, we report nickel oxide (NiO)-decorated cobalt oxide (Co₃O₄) nanorods (NRs) fabricated using the multiple-step glancing angle deposition method. The effective decoration of NiO on the entire surface of Co₃O₄ NRs enabled the formation of numerous p-p heterojunctions, and they exhibited a 16.78 times higher gas response to 50 ppm of C₆H₆ at 350 °C compared to that of bare Co₃O₄ NRs with the calculated detection limit of approximately 13.91 ppb. Apart from the p-p heterojunctions, increased active sites owing to the changes in the orientation of the exposed lattice surface and the catalytic effects of NiO also contributed to the enhanced gas sensing properties. The advantages of p-p heterojunctions for gas sensing applications demonstrated in this work will provide a new perspective of heterostructured metal-oxide nanostructures for sensitive and selective gas sensing.

Toward High-Performance Hematite Nanotube Photoanodes: Charge-Transfer Engineering at Heterointerfaces

Vertically ordered hematite nanotubes are considered to be promising photoactive materials for high-performance water-splitting photoanodes. However, the synthesis of hematite nanotubes directly on conducting substrates such as fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)/glass is difficult to be achieved because of the poor adhesion between hematite nanotubes and FTO/glass. Here, we report the synthesis of hematite nanotubes directly on FTO/glass substrate and high-performance photoelectrochemical properties of the nanotubes with NiFe cocatalysts. The hematite nanotubes are synthesized by a simple electrochemical anodization method. The adhesion of the hematite nanotubes to the FTO/glass substrate is drastically improved by dipping them in nonpolar cyclohexane prior to postannealing. Bare hematite nanotubes show a photocurrent density of 1.3 mA/cm(2) at 1.23 V vs a reversible hydrogen electrode, while hematite nanotubes with electrodeposited NiFe cocatalysts exhibit 2.1 mA/cm(2) at 1.23 V which is the highest photocurrent density reported for hematite nanotubes-based photoanodes for solar water splitting. Our work provides an efficient platform to obtain high-performance water-splitting photoanodes utilizing earth-abundant hematite and noble-metal-free cocatalysts.

Monomeric Rhodium(II) Catalysts for the Preparation of Aziridines and Enantioselective Formation of Cyclopropanes from Ethyl Diazoacetate at Room Temperature

A family of bis(oxazoline) complexes of coordinatively unsaturated monomeric rhodium(II) (2a,b, 3a,b) are described. These complexes serve as catalysts for cyclopropanation of olefins by ethyl diazoacetate, giving excellent yields (66-94%). Enantioselectivities for the cis product isomers are good (61-84%). The reaction shows an unusual preference for formation of the cis isomers. Catalytic aziridination of N-aryl imines with ethyl diazoacetate is also described.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone transcriptionally regulates the thiol-specific antioxidant gene

Thiol-specific antioxidant (TSA) plays an important role in regulating cell differentiation and proliferation by modulating the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) mediated responses in a variety of mammalian cells. Thyroid cells are constantly exposed to the actions of reactive oxygen species (ROS), because they produce high levels of H2O2 in response to the physiological action of TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). Thyrocytes have several defense mechanisms against ROS, including TSA and SOD (superoxide anion dismutase). Using Northern blot hybridization, we tested the effects of TSH on TSA gene expression in FRTL-5 cells derived from rat thyroids. TSA mRNA expression increased following treatment of cells with TSH at concentrations greater than 10(-9) M. This effect was observed within 6 hours following treatment, and peaked at 8 hours. The effect was blocked by actinomycin D, but not by cycloheximide. The half-life of TSA mRNA was approximately 5.5 hours in the presence or absence of TSH, and that was not affected by TSA mRNA stability. The effects on TSA gene expression were specific to TSH. Other growth factors (e.g., insulin, transferrin and hydrocortisone) did not alter TSA expression. Our results are the first indication that TSH regulates the expression of TSA transcriptionally in thyrocytes.

Methimazole as an antioxidant and immunomodulator in thyroid cells: mechanisms involving interferon-gamma signaling and H(2)O(2) scavenging

The antithyroid drug, methimazole (MMI) is used to treat patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism. The major action of MMI is to inhibit synthesis of thyroid hormone in the thyroid gland. However, MMI also has antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects on thyrocytes and/or immune cells. This study identifies novel antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects of MMI involving the interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) signaling pathway in thyroid cells. MMI inhibits transcription of the intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) gene by modulating the function of transcription factor STAT1 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 1), which binds to the IFN-gamma activated site of the ICAM-1 promoter. Furthermore, MMI rapidly eliminates H(2)O(2) produced by IFN-gamma treatment in thyroid cells and thus inhibits the H(2)O(2)-mediated phosphorylation of tyrosine 701 in STAT1. MMI also eliminates H(2)O(2) in vitro. MMI facilitates electron transfer from NADPH to H(2)O(2) using thioredoxin or glutathione, fulfilling a role similar to peroxiredoxin or glutathione peroxidase, respectively. MMI prevents the IFN-gamma and H(2)O(2)-mediated reversible inactivation of phosphatases. These effects inhibit full activation of the IFN-gamma-induced Janus kinase(JAK)/STAT signaling pathway in FRTL-5 thyroid cells. These results may in part explain the antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects of MMI in thyroid cells of Graves' disease patients.

Cell type-dependent regulation of human DNA topoisomerase III alpha gene expression by upstream stimulatory factor 2

Here, we report that an E-box element located within the human topoisomerase III alpha (hTOP3 alpha) gene promoter acts as a cell type-specific enhancer. The upstream stimulatory factor (USF) was shown to specifically recognize the mutationally sensitive E-box element. When assayed by transient transfection with hTOP3 alpha promoter-dependent reporter genes, USF is transcriptionally active in HeLa cells but lacks transcriptional activity in Saos-2 cells. The hTOP3 alpha mRNA level in Saos-2 cells was reduced to about 30% of the level observed for HeLa cells, suggesting that the inactivity of USF in hTOP3 alpha promoter activity may be the cause of the marked reduction of hTOP3 alpha mRNA levels in Saos-2 cells. Using transient transfection assays in HeLa cells, we demonstrated that ectopically expressed USF2, but not USF1, was capable of activating hTOP3 alpha transcription through the E-box element. However, USF2 did not stimulate hTOP3 alpha promoter activity in Saos-2 cells. This cell type-specific regulation of promoter activity by USF2 may provide a mechanism for the differential expression of hTOP3 alpha in various tissues and during developmental stages.

Regulation of phosphatidylinositol-phosphate kinase IIgamma gene transcription by thyroid-stimulating hormone in thyroid cells

This study was performed to evaluate the effects of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) on phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate 5-kinase type IIgamma (PIPKIIgamma) gene expression in the thyrocytes of FRTL-5 cells. Although PIPKIIgamma mRNA was expressed constantly in the absence of added TSH, its expression increased remarkably in the presence of 10(-9) M TSH. This increase started within 6 h of the addition of TSH, and reached a maximum at 8 h. The mRNA expression properties of PIPKIIgamma in the cells were identified using inhibitors. Actinomycin D blocked PIPKIIgamma transcription strongly, while cycloheximide did not. In an experiment using 5,6-dichlo-1-beta-d -ribofuranosylbenzimidaxole, the half-life of PIPKIIgamma mRNA was approximately 6 h in the presence or absence of TSH, and it was not affected by the stability of the PIPKIIgamma mRNA. The effects of TSH on PIPKIIgamma gene expression were specific, and other growth factors examined (transferrin, insulin and hydrocortisone) did not alter its expression. It is possible that the mechanism of PIPKIIgamma gene expression is involved in the permissive effect of the TSH-cAMP cascade proper. Our results indicate, for the first time, that the expression of PIPKIIgamma is regulated transcriptionally by TSH in thyrocytes.

Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins C1 and C2 associate with the RNA component of human telomerase

Here we demonstrate that heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) C1 and C2 can associate directly with the integral RNA component of mammalian telomerase. The binding site for hnRNPs C1 and C2 maps to a 6-base uridylate tract located directly 5' to the template region in the human telomerase RNA (TR) and a 4-base uridylate tract directly 3' to the template in the mouse TR. Telomerase activity is precipitated with antibodies specific to hnRNPs C1 and C2 from cells expressing wild-type human TR but not a variant of the human TR lacking the hnRNPs C1 and C2 binding site, indicating that hnRNPs C1 and C2 require the 6-base uridylate tract within the human TR to associate with the telomerase holoenzyme. In addition, we demonstrate that binding of hnRNPs C1 and C2 to telomerase correlates with the ability of telomerase to access the telomere. Although correlative, these data do suggest that the binding of hnRNPs C1 and C2 to telomerase may be important for the ability of telomerase to function on telomeres. The C proteins of the hnRNP particle are also capable of colocalizing with telomere binding proteins, suggesting that the C proteins may associate with telomeres in vivo. Therefore, human telomerase is capable of associating with core members of the hnRNP family of RNA binding proteins through a direct and sequence-specific interaction with the human TR. This is also the first account describing the precise mapping of a sequence in the human TR that is required to associate with an auxiliary component of the human telomerase holoenzyme.

Role of peroxiredoxins in regulating intracellular hydrogen peroxide and hydrogen peroxide-induced apoptosis in thyroid cells

Peroxiredoxins (Prxs) play an important role in regulating cellular differentiation and proliferation in several types of mammalian cells. One mechanism for this action involves modulation of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2))-mediated cellular responses. This report examines the expression of Prx I and Prx II in thyroid cells and their roles in eliminating H(2)O(2) produced in response to thyrotropin (TSH). Prx I and Prx II are constitutively expressed in FRTL-5 thyroid cells. Prx I expression, but not Prx II expression, is stimulated by exposure to TSH and H(2)O(2). In addition, methimazole induces a high level of Prx I mRNA and protein in these cells. Overexpression of Prx I and Prx II enhances the elimination of H(2)O(2) produced by TSH in FRTL-5 cells. Treatment with 500 micrometer H(2)O(2) causes apoptosis in FRTL-5 cells as evidenced by standard assays of apoptosis (i.e. terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase deoxyuridine triphosphate-biotin nick end labeling, BAX expression, and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase cleavage. Overexpression of Prx I and Prx II reduces the amount of H(2)O(2)-induced apoptosis measured by these assays. These results suggest that Prx I and Prx II are involved in the removal of H(2)O(2) in thyroid cells and can protect these cells from undergoing apoptosis. These proteins are likely to be involved in the normal physiological response to TSH-induced production of H(2)O(2) in thyroid cells.

Thyrotropin modulates interferon-gamma-mediated intercellular adhesion molecule-1 gene expression by inhibiting Janus kinase-1 and signal transducer and activator of transcription-1 activation in thyroid cells

TSH is known as an important hormone that plays the major role not only in the maintenance of normal physiology but also in the regulation of immunomodulatory gene expression in thyrocytes. The adhesion molecule intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) was identified as one of the proteins that are abnormally expressed in the thyroid gland during autoimmune thyroid diseases. In this study we found that TSH inhibits interferon-gamma (IFNgamma)-mediated expression of the ICAM-1 gene, and we investigated the involved mechanisms in rat FRTL-5 thyroid cells. After exposure to IFNgamma, ICAM-1 expression is positively regulated at the level of transcription. This effect occurs via the IFNgamma-activated site (GAS) element in the ICAM-1 promoter as a consequence of the activation of STAT1 (signal transducer and activator of transcription-1), but not of STAT3. On the other hand, after exposure to TSH plus IFNgamma, ICAM-1 transcription is negatively modulated. We found that this inhibitory effect of TSH also occurs via the GAS element. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays confirmed that the IFNgamma-induced DNA-binding activities of STAT1 were reduced by TSH. Furthermore, our results showed that the inhibitory effect of TSH on IFNgamma signaling is caused by inhibition of tyrosine phosphorylation on STAT1, Janus kinase-1 (Jak1), and IFNgamma receptor a, but not Jak2. In conclusion, we have identified a novel mechanism in which TSH modulates the IFNgamma-mediated Jak/STAT signaling pathway through the inhibition of Jak1 and STAT1.

Involvement of JAK/STAT (Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription) in the thyrotropin signaling pathway

TSH is an important physiological regulator of growth and function in thyroid gland. The mechanism of action of TSH depends on interaction with its receptor coupled to heterotrimeric G proteins. We show here that TSH induces the phosphorylation of tyrosine in the intracellular kinases Janus kinase 1 (JAK1) and -2 (JAK2) in rat thyroid cells and in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells transfected with human TSH receptor (TSHR). The JAK family substrates STAT3 (signal transducers and activators of transcription) are rapidly tyrosine phosphorylated in response to TSH. We also find that JAK1, JAK2, and STAT3 coprecipitate with the TSHR, indicating that the TSHR may be able to signal through the intracellular phosphorylation pathway used by the JAK-STAT cascade. TSH increases STAT3-mediated promoter activity and also induces endogenous SOCS-1 (suppressor of cytokine signaling-1) gene expression, a known target gene of STAT3. The expression of a dominant negative form of STAT3 completely inhibited TSH-mediated SOCS-1 expression. These findings suggest that the TSHR is able to signal through JAK/STAT3 pathways.

Thyrotropin induces SOCS-1 (suppressor of cytokine signaling-1) and SOCS-3 in FRTL-5 thyroid cells

TSH has multiple physiological roles: it is required for growth, differentiation, and function of the thyroid gland, and it regulates transcription of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma)-responsive genes in thyrocytes, including genes for the major histocompatibility complex and intercellular adhesion molecule-1. This report demonstrates that TSH induces the expression of suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS)-1 and -3 proteins and alters the phosphorylation state of signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) proteins STAT1 and STAT3. The expression of SOCS-1 and SOCS-3 and the phosphorylation state of STAT1 and STAT3 were examined after treatment with TSH or IFN-gamma in either TSH-sensitive FRTL-5 thyroid cells or TSH-insensitive FRT and buffalo rat liver (BRL) cells, which lack functional TSH receptors. SOCS-1 and SOCS-3 are constitutively expressed in FRTL-5 cells, but not in FRT and BRL cells. IFN-gamma up-regulated SOCS-1 and SOCS-3 RNA and protein in FRTL-5 cells, as reported previously for nonthyroid cells. Interestingly, TSH also significantly induced SOCS-1 and SOCS-3 in FRTL-5 cells, but not in FRT and BRL cells. When SOCS-1 or SOCS-3 was overexpressed in FRTL-5 cells, STAT1 phosphorylation at Y701 and STAT1/DNA complex formation in response to IFN-gamma were reduced. Furthermore, overexpression of either SOCS-1 or SOCS-3 significantly inhibited the IFN-gamma-mediated transactivation of the rat ICAM-1 (intercellular adhesion molecule-1) promoter. TSH and IFN-gamma had different effects on STAT1 and STAT3 phosphorylation. The phosphorylation of Y701 in STAT1, which is responsible for homodimer formation, nuclear translocation, and DNA binding, was specifically stimulated by IFN-gamma, but not by TSH or forskolin. However, the phosphorylation of S727 in STAT1 was induced by IFN-gamma, TSH, and forskolin. TSH induced phosphorylation of both Y705 and S727 in STAT3, while IFN-gamma phosphorylated only the Y705. In addition, we found that SOCS-3 was associated with JAK1 and JAK2 and that these associations were stimulated by TSH. These findings demonstrate that TSH induces SOCS in thyroid cells and provides the evidence of signal cross-talk between TSH and cytokines in thyroid cells.

Reduced activity of topoisomerase II in an Adriamycin-resistant human stomach-adenocarcinoma cell line

A human stomach-adenocarcinoma cell line (MKN-45) was selected for resistance to Adriamycin by stepwise exposure to increasing concentrations of this agent. The resulting cell line (MKN/ADR) exhibited a high level of cross-resistance to topoisomerase II (topo II)-targeted drugs such as Adriamycin, mitoxantrone, and etoposide but showed no cross-resistance to other chemotherapeutic agents such as cisplatin, carboplatin, 5-fluorouracil, or mitomycin-C. P-glycoprotein encoded by the mdr-1 gene was not overexpressed in the MKN/ADR cell line. The doubling time of the MKN/ADR cell line (2.1 days) increased only slightly as compared with that of the MKN cell line (1.7 days). The patterns of cross-resistance to various chemotherapeutic agents led us to examine the cellular contents of topo II in both the drug-sensitive and the drug-resistant cells. Extractable topo II enzyme activity was 3-fold lower in MKN/ADR cells as compared with the parental MKN cells. Levels of topoisomerase I (topo I) catalytic activity were similar in both wild-type MKN and drug-resistant MKN/ADR cells. Southern-blot analysis of genomic DNA probed with topo IIalpha or IIbeta showed no sign of either gene rearrangement or hypermethylation. Northern-blot analysis revealed that both topo IIalpha and topo IIbeta mRNA transcripts were essentially identical in the MKN and MKN/ADR cells. In contrast, Western-blot analysis revealed an approximately 20-fold lower level of topo IIalpha in drug-resistant cells as compared with drug-sensitive cells, whereas topo IIbeta levels were similar in both lines. Moreover, the amount of in vivo topo IIalpha-DNA covalent complexes formed in the presence of etoposide was also approximately 20-fold lower in drug-resistant cells. No mutation was detected in the promoter region of the topo IIalpha gene in resistant cells as compared with sensitive cells. Thus, low levels of topo IIalpha polypeptide cannot be ascribed to changes in the mRNA levels. Collectively, the data suggest that a quantitative reduction in topo IIalpha may contribute to the resistance of MKN cells to Adriamycin and other topo II-targeted drugs.

Identification of a ribosomal frameshift in Leishmania RNA virus 1-4

Double-stranded Leishmania RNA virus 1-4 (LRV 1-4) has at least four open reading frames (ORFs). The two small ORFs located near its 5' terminus, ORF1 and ORFx, could encode 34- and 60-amino acid polypeptides, respectively. ORF2 encodes an 82-kDa major capsid protein, and ORF3 encodes a 98-kDa polypeptide which contains the consensus sequence for RNA-dependent RNA polymerases of plus-strand and double-stranded RNA viruses. The complete sequence of LRV 1-4 shows that ORF2 and ORF3 overlap by 71 nucleotides, and that ORF3 lacks a potential translation initiation site, suggesting that the viral polymerase may be synthesized as a 180-kDa fusion protein with the virus capsid. In this report, we present evidence for the synthesis of a fusion protein through a ribosomal frameshift. In vitro-translation experiments and immunostudies involving antiserum against the viral capsid protein demonstrated that the overlapping 71 nucleotides of ORF2 and ORF3 are contained in a region which promotes translational frameshifting. Computer analysis of the putative frameshift region revealed a potential pseudoknot structure located within the overlapping 71 nucleotide sequence.

Sclerosis of hepatic cavernous hemangioma: CT findings and pathologic correlation

We report a case of hepatic cavernous hemangioma with computed tomographic findings of well demarcated nodular lesser attenuation foci within the main low attenuation mass on precontrast scans and non-enhancement of the foci even on the delayed contrast scans. These have been described as one of the atypical findings of cavernous hemangioma earlier in the literature. Surgery proved that sclerosis accounted for the hypodense nodular densities within the hepatic cavernous hemangioma.

Three-dimensional demonstration and endoscopic treatment of pancreaticoperitoneal fistula

An alcoholic man presented with bloody ascites, which was confirmed as pancreatic ascites complicating chronic pancreatitis. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatography [ERP] demonstrated a ductal disruption at the head of the pancreas, a fistulous tract, and extravasation to the peritoneal cavity. Furthermore, a computerized tomographic scan subsequent to the endoscopic retrograde pancreatography (ERP-CT scan) gave the three-dimensional anatomy of the fistulous tract by the residual contrast media in the pancreatic duct and the fistulous tract. The pancreatic ascites, which was refractory to conventional medical treatment of a 5-wk duration, was successfully treated by endoscopic placement of a pancreatic stent and administration of a somatostatin analogue.
