Multidimensional Deep Ultraviolet (DUV) Synapses Based on Organic/Perovskite Semiconductor Heterojunction Transistors for Antispoofing Facial Recognition Systems

Reliably discerning real human faces from fake ones, known as antispoofing, is crucial for facial recognition systems. While neuromorphic systems offer integrated sensing-memory-processing functions, they still struggle with efficient antispoofing techniques. Here we introduce a neuromorphic facial recognition system incorporating multidimensional deep ultraviolet (DUV) optoelectronic synapses to address these challenges. To overcome the complexity and high cost of producing DUV synapses using traditional wide-bandgap semiconductors, we developed a low-temperature (≤70 °C) solution process for fabricating DUV synapses based on PEA2PbBr4/C8-BTBT heterojunction field-effect transistors. This method enables the large-scale (4-in.), uniform, and transparent production of DUV synapses. These devices respond to both DUV and visible light, showing multidimensional features. Leveraging the unique ability of the multidimensional DUV synapse (MDUVS) to discriminate real human skin from artificial materials, we have achieved robust neuromorphic facial recognition with antispoofing capability, successfully identifying genuine human faces with an accuracy exceeding 92%.

Monolithic three-dimensional tier-by-tier integration via van der Waals lamination

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have shown great potential for monolithic three-dimensional (M3D) integration due to their dangling-bonds-free surface and the ability to integrate to various substrates without the conventional constraint of lattice matching1-10. However, with atomically thin body thickness, 2D semiconductors are not compatible with various high-energy processes in microelectronics11-13, where the M3D integration of multiple 2D circuit tiers is challenging. Here we report an alternative low-temperature M3D integration approach by van der Waals (vdW) lamination of entire prefabricated circuit tiers, where the processing temperature is controlled to 120 °C. By further repeating the vdW lamination process tier by tier, an M3D integrated system is achieved with 10 circuit tiers in the vertical direction, overcoming previous thermal budget limitations. Detailed electrical characterization demonstrates the bottom 2D transistor is not impacted after repetitively laminating vdW circuit tiers on top. Furthermore, by vertically connecting devices within different tiers through vdW inter-tier vias, various logic and heterogeneous structures are realized with desired system functions. Our demonstration provides a low-temperature route towards fabricating M3D circuits with increased numbers of tiers.

Protective Mechanisms of SGLTi in Ischemic Heart Disease

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a common clinical cardiovascular disease with high morbidity and mortality. Sodium glucose cotransporter protein inhibitor (SGLTi) is a novel hypoglycemic drug. To date, both clinical trials and animal experiments have shown that SGLTi play a protective role in IHD, including myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). The protective effects may be involved in mechanisms of energy metabolic conversion, anti-inflammation, anti-fibrosis, ionic homeostasis improvement, immune cell development, angiogenesis and functional regulation, gut microbiota regulation, and epicardial lipids. Thus, this review summarizes the above mechanisms and aims to provide theoretical evidence for therapeutic strategies for IHD.

[Senolytic effects on dental pulp stem cell's proliferation and differentiation during long-term expansion]

Objective: To investigate the impact of intermittent senescent cell clearance on the proliferation and differentiation of dental pulp stem cells (DPSC) in long-term, large-scale expansion, and to explore strategies for maintaining the youthful state of DPSC in vitro. Methods: Human-derived dental pulp stem cells were isolated from healthy permanent teeth extracted for orthodontic or impeding eruption reasons, provided by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University. Long-term, large-scale in vitro expansion of DPSC was conducted. The study compared young DPSC (passage 5) with aged DPSC (passage 25) using cellular senescence-associated β-galactosidase staining, colony formation assay, and Alizarin Red S staining for osteogenic differentiation induction. To assess the differences between the two cell populations in terms of senescence and amplification and differentiation ability. Medicine screening for the most effective senolytic was compared among 5 common senolytics [Navitoclax (ABT-263), curcumin, dasatinib, fisetin, and quercetin]. The clearance efficacy was compared using cellular senescence-associated β-galactosidase staining to reflect the changes in senescent cell ratio. The senolytic with the highest efficacy was chosen for further experiments. The passage at which the proportion of senescent cells significantly increased was identified, and the selected senolytic was administered three times at three-generation intervals from that passage to remove senescent cells. Both the control and senolytic-treated groups were estimated by fluorescence cellular senescence-associated β-galactosidase staining, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR), colony formation assay, wound healing assay, and Alizarin Red S staining for osteogenic differentiation induction. Subcutaneous heterotopic osteogenesis was performed in nude mice and the grafts were analyzed by HE staining and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) immunohistochemical staining. Results: The proportion of senescent cells increased as the expansion extended, leading to decreased proliferation and osteogenic differentiation ability of senescent DPSC compared to young DPSC (P<0.05). Senescent DPSC exhibited altered mRNA expression levels of senescence-related genes, including p21, p16INK4a, IL-6, and Ki67 (P<0.001). Among the five senolytics, ABT-263 had the biggest decreases in the proportion of senescent cells. After intermittent ABT-263 treatment during expansion, the proportion of senescent cells in the senolytic-treated group [(6.72±2.34)%] was significantly lower than that in the control group [(31.82±0.57)%] (P<0.001). RT-qPCR confirmed that compared with the control group, mRNA expressions of p21, p16INK4a, and IL-6 in the senolytic-treated group were significantly decreased (P<0.05), while mRNA expressions of Ki67 were significantly increased (P<0.01). Furthermore, the cell healing ability and osteogenic differentiation ability of the senolytic-treated group were higher than those of the control group (P<0.05). In vivo experimental results indicated that the relative new bone area [(2.36±0.48)%] after DPSC transplantation in the senolytic-treated group was greater than that in the control group [(1.00±0.46)%] (P<0.05), and the expression of ALP was higher than that in the control group (P<0.01). Conclusions: ABT-263 can effectively eliminate senescent cells in long-term large-scale DPSC expansion. Continuous treatment with ABT-263 during cultivation can maintain the proliferation and differentiation ability of DPSC both in vivo and in vitro.

Screening anabolic androgenic steroids in human urine: an application of the state-of-the-art gas chromatography-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry

Over the past few decades, anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) have been abused in and out of competition for their performance-enhancing and muscle-building properties. Traditionally, AASs were commonly detected using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the initial testing procedure for doping control purposes. Gas chromatography-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-Orbitrap-HRMS) is a new technology that has many advantages in comparison with GC-MS (e.g., a maximum resolving power of 240,000 (FWHM at m/z 200), excellent sub-ppm mass accuracy, and retrospective data analysis after data acquisition). Anti-doping practitioners are encouraged to take full advantage of the updated techniques of chromatography-mass spectrometry to develop sensitive, specific, and rapid screening methods for AASs. A new method for screening a wide range of AASs in human urine using GC-Orbitrap-HRMS was developed and validated. The method can qualitatively determine 70 anabolic androgenic steroids according to the minimum required performance limit of the World Anti-Doping Agency. Moreover, the validated method was successfully applied to detect six metabolites in urine after the oral administration of metandienone, and their excretion curves in vivo were studied. Metandienone M6 (17β-hydroxymethyl-17α-methyl-18-nor-androst-1,4,13-trien-3-one) has been identified as a long-term urinary metabolite which can be detected up to 7 weeks, thus providing a longer detection window compared with previous studies. This study provides a rationale for GC-Orbitrap-HRMS in drug metabolism and non-targeted screening.

Reconfigurable Ag/HfO2/NiO/Pt Memristors with Stable Synchronous Synaptic and Neuronal Functions for Renewable Homogeneous Neuromorphic Computing System

Artificial synapses and bionic neurons offer great potential in highly efficient computing paradigms. However, complex requirements for specific electronic devices in neuromorphic computing have made memristors face the challenge of process simplification and universality. Herein, reconfigurable Ag/HfO2/NiO/Pt memristors are designed for feasible switching between volatile and nonvolatile modes by compliance current controlled Ag filaments, which enables stable and reconfigurable synaptic and neuronal functions. A neuromorphic computing system effectively replicates the biological synaptic weight alteration and continuously accomplishes excitation and reset of artificial neurons, which consist of bionic synapses and artificial neurons based on isotype Ag/HfO2/NiO/Pt memristors. This reconfigurable electrical performance of the Ag/HfO2/NiO/Pt memristors takes advantage of simplified hardware design and delivers integrated circuits with high density, which exhibits great potency for future neural networks.

Artificial Domain Patterning in Ultrathin Ferroelectric Films via Modifying the Surface Electrostatic Boundary Conditions

Nanoscale spatially controlled modulation of the properties of ferroelectrics via artificial domain pattering is crucial to their emerging optoelectronics applications. New patterning strategies to achieve high precision and efficiency and to link the resultant domain structures with device functionalities are being sought. Here, we present an epitaxial heterostructure of SrRuO3/PbTiO3/SrRuO3, wherein the domain configuration is delicately determined by the charge screening conditions in the SrRuO3 layer and the substrate strains. Chemical etching of the top SrRuO3 layer leads to a transition from in-plane a domains to out-of-plane c domains, accompanied by a giant (>105) modification in the second harmonic generation response. The modulation effect, coupled with the plasmonic resonance effect from SrRuO3, enables a highly flexible design of nonlinear optical devices, as demonstrated by a simulated split-ring resonator metasurface. This domain patterning strategy may be extended to more thin-film ferroelectric systems with domain stabilities amenable to electrostatic boundary conditions.

Controllable van der Waals gaps by water adsorption

Van der Waals (vdW) gaps with ångström-scale heights can confine molecules or ions to an ultimately small scale, providing an alternative way to tune material properties and explore microscopic phenomena. Modulation of the height of vdW gaps between two-dimensional (2D) materials is challenging due to the vdW interaction. Here we report a general approach to control the vdW gap by preadsorption of water molecules on the material surface. By controlling the saturation vapour pressure of water vapour, we can precisely control the adsorption level of water molecules and vary the height of the vdW gaps of MoS2 homojunctions from 5.5 Å to 53.6 Å. This technique can be further applied to other homo- and heterojunctions, constructing controlled vdW gaps in 2D artificial superlattices and in 2D/3D and 3D/3D heterojunctions. Engineering the vdW gap has great practical potential to modulate the device performance, as evidenced by the vdW-gap-dependent diode characteristics of the MoS2/gap/MoS2 junction. Our work introduces a general strategy of molecular preadsorption that can extend to various precursors, creating more tunability and variability in vdW material systems.

Adsorption of high-temperature CO2 by Ca2+/Na+-doped lithium orthosilicate: characterization, kinetics, and recycle

High-temperature solid adsorbent Li4SiO4 has received broad attention due to its high theoretical adsorption capacity, high regeneration capacity, and wide range of raw materials for preparation. In this paper, a Li4SiO4 adsorbent was prepared by MCM-48 as the silica precursor and modified by doping with metal ions (Ca2+ and Na+) for high-temperature capture of low-concentration CO2. The results showed that the surface of the Ca-doped (or Na-doped) Li4SiO4 adsorbent developed some particles that are primarily composed by Li2CaSiO4 (or Li3NaSiO4). Furthermore, the grains of the adsorbents became finer, effectively increasing the specific surface area and enhancing adsorption performance. Under 15 vol% CO2, the maximum CO2 adsorption was 25.63 wt% and 32.86 wt% when the Ca2+ doping amount was 0.06 and the Na+ doping amount was 0.12, respectively. These values were both higher than the adsorption capacity before the metal ion doping. After 10 adsorption/desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of Na-doped Li4SiO4 increased by 9.68 wt%, while that of Ca-doped Li4SiO4 decreased by 7.98 wt%. This difference could be attributed to the easy sintering of the Ca-containing adsorbent. Furthermore, a biexponential model was used to fit the CO2 adsorption curve of the adsorbent in order to study the adsorption kinetics. Compared to the conventional Li4SiO4, the Ca/Na-doped adsorbent offers several advantages, such as a high CO2 adsorption capacity and stable cycling ability.

Ag+-stabilized DNA triplex coupled with catalytic hairpin assembly and CRISPR/Cas12a amplifications for sensitive metallothionein assay

Metallothionein (MT) is a protein biomarker secreted by liver in response to the treatment for heavy metal toxicity and oncological diseases. On the basis of a new Ag+-stabilized DNA triplex probe (Ag+-SDTP), we establish a fluorescent biosensing system for high sensitivity detection of MT by combining catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) and the CRISPR/Cas12a signal enhancements. The MT analyte complexes with Ag+ in Ag+-SDTP to disrupt the triplex structure and to release the ssDNA strands, which trigger subsequent CHA formation of many protospacer adjacent motif (PAM)-containing dsDNAs from two hairpins. Cas12a/crRNA further recognizes these PAM sequences to activate its trans-catalytic activity to cyclically cleave the fluorescently quenched ssDNA reporters to recovery drastically amplified fluorescence for detecting MT down to 0.34 nM within the dynamic range of 1∼800 nM. Moreover, the sensing method is able to selectively discriminate MT from other non-specific molecules and can realize low level detection of MT in diluted human serums, manifesting its potentiality for monitoring the disease-specific MT biomarker at trace levels.

Pretreatment synthetic MRI features for triple-negative breast cancer

AIM

To evaluate the quantitative parameters derived from synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (SyMRI) for predicting triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This prospective study enrolled participants with invasive ductal breast carcinoma (IDBC) and separated them into a TNBC group and a Non-TNBC group. Preoperative breast MRI included both the SyMRI and conventional MRI sequences. The quantitative parameters derived from the SyMRI included T1 and T2 relaxation times, proton density (PD), and their standard deviations (SD). Clinicopathological characteristics, conventional MRI findings, and quantitative synthetic parameters were assessed for all participants. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the potential independent imaging predictors for TNBC preoperatively. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the performance of these parameters.

RESULTS

A total of 231 participants with histopathological proven IDBC were included in this study (n=46 in the TNBC group and n=185 in the Non-TNBC group). The TNBC group had significantly larger tumour size (p=0.011) and more frequent intratumoural cystic or necrotic lesions (p<0.001) as compared to the Non-TNBC group. The univariate analysis showed that the TNBC tumours had significantly higher T1 (p=0.006) and T2 (p<0.001) values than Non-TNBC tumours. Subsequent multivariable analysis indicated that T2 values and the presence of cystic or necrotic lesions were the independent predictors for TNBC.

CONCLUSION

The T2 from synthetic imaging and the presence of cystic degeneration or necrosis within the breast cancer may serve as potential imaging biomarkers for preoperative differentiation of TNBC from Non-TNBC.

Compositional Engineering of Cu-Doped SnO Film for Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor Technology

Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based complementary thin-film transistor (TFT) circuits have broad application prospects in large-scale flexible electronics. To simplify circuit design and increase integration density, basic complementary circuits require both p- and n-channel transistors based on an individual semiconductor. However, until now, no MOSs that can simultaneously show p- and n-type conduction behavior have been reported. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time that Cu-doped SnO (Cu:SnO) with HfO2 capping can be employed for high-performance p- and n-channel TFTs. The interstitial Cu+ can induce an n-doping effect while restraining electron-electron scatterings by removing conduction band minimum degeneracy. As a result, the Cu3 atom %:SnO TFTs exhibit a record high electron mobility of 43.8 cm2 V-1 s-1. Meanwhile, the p-channel devices show an ultrahigh hole mobility of 2.4 cm2 V-1 s-1. Flexible complementary logics are then established, including an inverter, NAND gates, and NOR gates. Impressively, the inverter exhibits an ultrahigh gain of 302.4 and excellent operational stability and bending reliability.

Edge-by-Edge Lateral Heterostructure through Interfacial Sliding

van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) based on two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have attracted considerable attention. However, the reported vdWHs are largely based on vertical device structure with large overlapping area, while the realization of lateral heterostructures contacted through 2D edges remains challenging and is majorly limited by the difficulties of manipulating the lateral distance of 2D materials at nanometer scale (during transfer process). Here, we demonstrate a simple interfacial sliding approach for realizing an edge-by-edge lateral contact. By stretching a vertical vdWH, two 2D flakes could gradually slide apart or toward each other. Therefore, by applying proper strain, the initial vertical vdWH could be converted into a lateral heterojunction with intimately contacted 2D edges. The lateral contact structure is supported by both microscope characterization and in situ electrical measurements, exhibiting carrier tunneling behavior. Finally, this approach can be extended to 3D thin films, as demonstrated by the lateral 2D/3D and 3D/3D Schottky junction.

Target-initiated triplex signal amplification cascades for non-label and sensitive fluorescence sensing of microRNA

The aberrant expression of microRNAs (miRs) in cells is closely linked to the initiation and progression of various diseases. Sensitive monitoring of their level is hence vital for biomedical research and disease diagnosis. Herein, a highly sensitive and non-label fluorescence sensor based on multiple recycling signal amplification cascades is constructed for the detection of miR-21 in human sera. The presence of miR-21 initiates the primer-fueled target recycling process for the generation of many primer/hairpin templates for the subsequent auto-cycling primer extension (APE) amplification cycles, which result in the formation of lots of long-stem hairpins. The enzyme-based cleavage of such hairpins via polymerization/excision cycles further leads to the generation of abundant G-quadruplex strands, which associate with the thioflavin T (ThT) dye to emit remarkably magnified fluorescence for detecting miR-21 in the range of 1 pM-100 nM with a 0.32 pM detection limit without labeling the probes. Besides, the proposed assay can selectively discriminate miR-21 against other control molecules and realize the sensing of low levels of miR-21 in diluted sera. With features of high sensitivity via the triplex signal amplification cycles and simplicity in a non-label homogeneous manner, our miR sensing protocol can be a robust means for detecting various nucleic acids for the early diagnosis of diseases.

Ag-Assisted Dry Exfoliation of Large-Scale and Continuous 2D Monolayers

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have generated considerable attention for high-performance electronics and optoelectronics. However, to date, it is still challenging to mechanically exfoliate large-area and continuous monolayers while retaining their intrinsic properties. Here, we report a simple dry exfoliation approach to produce large-scale and continuous 2D monolayers by using a Ag film as the peeling tape. Importantly, the conducting Ag layer could be converted into AgOx nanoparticles at low annealing temperature, directly decoupling the conducting Ag with the underlayer 2D monolayers without involving any solution or etching process. Electrical characterization of the monolayer MoS2 transistor shows a decent carrier mobility of 42 cm2 V-1 s-1 and on-state current of 142 μA/μm. Finally, a plasmonic enhancement photodetector could be simultaneously realized due to the direct formation of Ag nanoparticles arrays on MoS2 monolayers, without complex approaches for nanoparticle synthesis and integration processes, demonstrating photoresponsivity and detectivity of 6.3 × 105 A/W and 2.3 × 1013 Jones, respectively.

Performance and mechanism analysis of sludge-based biochar loaded with Co and Mn as photothermal catalysts for simultaneous removal of acetone and NO at low temperature

Replacing NH3 in NH3-SCR with VOCs provides a new idea for the simultaneous removal of VOCs and NOx, but the technology still has urgent problems such as high cost of catalyst preparation and unsatisfactory catalytic effect in the low-temperature region. In this study, biochar obtained from sewage sludge calcined at different temperatures was used as a carrier, and different Co and Mn injection ratios were selected. Then, a series of sludge-based biochar (SBC) catalysts were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method for the simultaneous removal of acetone and NO in a low-temperature photothermal co-catalytic system with acetone replacing NH3. The characterization results show that heat is the main driving force of the reaction system, and the abundance of Co and Mn atoms in high valence states, surface-adsorbed oxygen, and oxygen lattice defects in the catalyst are the most important factors affecting the performance of the catalyst. The performance test results showed that the optimal pyrolysis temperature of sludge was 400 °C, the optimal dosing ratio of Co and Mn was 4:1, and the catalyst achieved 42.98% and 52.41% conversion of acetone and NO, respectively, at 240 °C with UV irradiation. Compared with the pure SBC without catalytic effect, the SBC loaded with Co and Mn gained the ability of simultaneous removal of acetone and NO through the combined effect of multiple factors. The key reaction steps for the catalytic conversion of acetone and NO on the catalyst surface were investigated according to the Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism, and a possible mechanism was proposed. This study provides a new strategy for the resource utilization of sewage sludge and the preparation of photothermal catalysts for the simultaneous removal of acetone and NO at low cost.

TNFSF14 mediates the impact of docosahexaenoic acid on atopic dermatitis: a Mendelian randomization study

OBJECTIVE

While current research suggests potential value for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the prevention and management of atopic dermatitis (AD), the causal relationship between DHA and AD remains unclear, and the underlying mechanisms are not well understood.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

To investigate the potential causal relationship between DHA and AD, as well as to explore potential mediating mechanisms, we employed the Mendelian randomization (MR) methods. To study these potential relationships, we conducted MR analysis using publicly available Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) data. Effect estimates were computed using the random-effects inverse-variance weighted method.

RESULTS

Our study demonstrates a negative correlation between DHA levels and AD risk (OR: 0.915, 95% CI: 0.858-0.975, p=0.007). Furthermore, in MR analysis using tumor necrosis factor ligand superfamily member 14 (TNFSF14) levels as an outcome, DHA levels also show a negative association with TNFSF14 levels (OR: 0.933, 95% CI: 0.879-0.990, p=0.022). Subsequently, we performed further analysis to explore the relationship between TNFSF14 and AD risk, revealing a positive correlation (OR: 1.069, 95% CI: 1.005-1.137, p=0.033). This suggests a potential mediating role of TNFSF14 in the impact of DHA on AD risk.

CONCLUSIONS

In summary, our study employs MR analysis to offer genetic evidence indicating a potential role of DHA in reducing the risk of AD, as well as opening avenues for further in-depth investigation into potential mechanisms. These findings emphasize the importance of ongoing research in this field.

Next-Generation Photodetectors beyond Van Der Waals Junctions

With the continuous advancement of nanofabrication techniques, development of novel materials, and discovery of useful manipulation mechanisms in high-performance applications, especially photodetectors, the morphology of junction devices and the way junction devices are used are fundamentally revolutionized. Simultaneously, new types of photodetectors that do not rely on any junction, providing a high signal-to-noise ratio and multidimensional modulation, have also emerged. This review outlines a unique category of material systems supporting novel junction devices for high-performance detection, namely, the van der Waals materials, and systematically discusses new trends in the development of various types of devices beyond junctions. This field is far from mature and there are numerous methods to measure and evaluate photodetectors. Therefore, it is also aimed to provide a solution from the perspective of applications in this review. Finally, based on the insight into the unique properties of the material systems and the underlying microscopic mechanisms, emerging trends in junction devices are discussed, a new morphology of photodetectors is proposed, and some potential innovative directions in the subject area are suggested.

Factors influencing the occurrence of hyperuricemia and poor cardiac and renal outcomes in chronic kidney disease

OBJECTIVE

The aim of our study was to analyze the factors influencing the occurrence of hyperuricemia and poor cardiac and renal outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD).

PATIENTS AND METHODS

One hundred and sixteen patients with CKD admitted to our hospital from January 2022 to September 2022 were picked as the subjects. Fasting venous blood of these subjects was collected to value the serum uric acid (SUA) levels on an automatic biochemical analyzer. Patients were then grouped as the CKD-only group (n=80) and hyperuricemia group (n=36), according to the SUA results, or the good prognosis group (n=88) and poor prognosis group (n=28), according to the presence of cardiovascular diseases. The changes in laboratory indexes and clinical data were analyzed and compared. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the risk factors for combined hyperuricemia and the risk factors for poor cardiac and renal outcomes in patients with CKD. The correlation between SUA level and cardiac and renal indexes was analyzed by Pearson analysis.

RESULTS

Patients in the CKD hyperuricemia group had markedly higher content of systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), urinary retinol-binding protein (RBP), urinary N-acetyl-β-D glucosidase (NAG), much higher proportion of heart failure episodes history, and much lower content of total cholesterol (TC), albumin (Alb), hemoglobin (Hb), urinary α1-microglobulin (α1-MG), and glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) than the CKD-only group (p < 0.05). SUA, BNP, SBP, and history of heart failure episodes were independent risk factors for combined hyperuricemia in CKD patients (p < 0.05). Besides, eGFR, albumin, and hemoglobin were independent protective factors for combined hyperuricemia in CKD patients (p < 0.05). Compared with the good prognosis group, the content of BNP, SBP, DBP, urinary RBP, urinary NAG, and SUA was much higher, the proportion of heart failure episodes history was obviously higher, and the levels of Alb, Hb, TC, eGFR, and urinary α1-MG were sharply lower in the poor prognosis group (p < 0.05). SUA, BNP, SBP, and history of heart failure episodes were independent risk factors for poor cardiac and renal outcomes (p < 0.05), and eGFR was an independent protective factor for poor cardiac and renal outcomes in patients with CKD (p < 0.05). The SUA level in CKD patients was positively correlated with BNP and SBP (r=0.463, 0.215, p < 0.05), but negatively correlated with eGFR (r=0.463, 0.215, p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The serum SUA level was elevated with the aggravation of the CKD stage. High serum SUA level is a risk factor for the development of hyperuricemia and poor cardio-renal outcomes in CKD patients, suggesting that early monitoring of changes in SUA levels may help assess the risk of cardio-renal outcomes in CKD patients.

Derivatization-Enhanced Analysis of Glucocorticoids for Structural Characterization by Gas Chromatography-Orbitrap High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Glucocorticoids are classified in section S9 of the Prohibited List of the World Anti-Doping Agency, due to a potential risk to improving physical performance and causing harm to the health of athletes. Based on the similar physiological actions of glucocorticoids, both differentiating known glucocorticoids and identifying unknown glucocorticoids are important for doping control. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry plays an important role in structural characterization because of abundant structural diagnostic ions produced by electron ionization. It also provides a chance to study the fragmentation patterns. Thus, an enhanced derivatization procedure was optimized to produce trimethylsilylated glucocorticoids and structural diagnostic ions of nineteen trimethylsilylated glucocorticoids were obtained by gas chromatography-orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry. In our study, glucocorticoids were classified as: 3-keto-4-ene, 1,4-diene-3-keto, 3α-hydroxy with saturated A-ring, 21-hydroxy-20-keto and halo substituent glucocorticoids based on their structural difference. Structural diagnostic ions that contributed to structural characterization were specifically presented and the fragment patterns were demonstrated according to the above categories. This study not only gave new insights into the structural characterization of these glucocorticoids but also provided evidence for tracing unknown glucocorticoids or chemically modified molecules.

Outcome of stroke patients eligible to mechanical thrombectomy managed by spoke center, primary stroke center or comprehensive stroke center in the East of France

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Patients with suspected stroke are referred to the nearest hospital and are managed either in a spoke center (SC), a primary stroke center (PSC), or a comprehensive stroke center (CSC) in order to benefit from early intravenous thrombolysis (IVT). In case of large vessel occlusion (LVO), mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is only performed in the CSC, whereas the effectiveness of MT is highly time-dependent. There is a debate about the best management model of patients with suspected LVO. Therefore, we aimed to compare functional and safety outcomes of LVO patients eligible for MT managed through our regional telestroke system.

METHOD

We performed a retrospective analysis of our observational prospective clinical registry in all consecutive subjects with LVO within six hours of onset who were admitted to the SC, PSC, or CSC in the east of France between October 2017 and November 2022. The primary endpoint was the functional independence defined as modified Rankin scale (mRS) score 0 to 2 at 90 days. Secondary endpoints were functional outcome, early neurological improvement, symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and 90-day mortality.

RESULTS

Among the 794 included patients with LVO who underwent MT, 122 (15.4%) were managed by a SC, 403 (50.8%) were first admitted to a PSC, and 269 (33.9%) were first admitted to the CSC. The overall median NIHSS and ASPECTS score were 16 and 8, respectively. Multivariate analysis did not find any significant difference for the primary endpoint between patients managed by PSC versus CSC (OR 1.06 [95% CI 0.64;1.76], P=0.82) and between patient managed by SC versus CSC (OR 0.69 [0.34;1.40], P=0.30). No difference between the three groups was found except for the parenchymal hematoma rate between PSC and CSC (15.7 versus 7.4%, OR 2.25 [1.07;4.74], P=0.032).

CONCLUSIONS

Compared with a first admission to a CSC, the clinical outcomes of stroke patients with LVO eligible for MT first admitted to a SC or a PSC are similar.

Lattice-mismatch-free construction of III-V/chalcogenide core-shell heterostructure nanowires

Growing high-quality core-shell heterostructure nanowires is still challenging due to the lattice mismatch issue at the radial interface. Herein, a versatile strategy is exploited for the lattice-mismatch-free construction of III-V/chalcogenide core-shell heterostructure nanowires by simply utilizing the surfactant and amorphous natures of chalcogenide semiconductors. Specifically, a variety of III-V/chalcogenide core-shell heterostructure nanowires are successfully constructed with controlled shell thicknesses, compositions, and smooth surfaces. Due to the conformal properties of obtained heterostructure nanowires, the wavelength-dependent bi-directional photoresponse and visible light-assisted infrared photodetection are realized in the type-I GaSb/GeS core-shell heterostructure nanowires. Also, the enhanced infrared photodetection is found in the type-II InGaAs/GeS core-shell heterostructure nanowires compared with the pristine InGaAs nanowires, in which both responsivity and detectivity are improved by more than 2 orders of magnitude. Evidently, this work paves the way for the lattice-mismatch-free construction of core-shell heterostructure nanowires by chemical vapor deposition for next-generation high-performance nanowire optoelectronics.

Ambient-Stable 2D Dion-Jacobson Phase Tin Halide Perovskite Field-Effect Transistors with Mobility over 1.6 Cm2 V-1 s-1

Solution-processed metal halide perovskites hold immense potential for the advancement of next-generation field-effect transistors (FETs). However, the instability of perovskite-based transistors has impeded their progress and practical applications. Here, ambient-stable high-performance FETs based on 2D Dion-Jacobson phase tin halide perovskite BDASnI4 , which has high film quality and excellent electrical properties, are reported. The perovskite channels are established by engineering the film crystallization process via the employment of ammonium salt interlayers and the incorporation of NH4 SCN additives within the precursor solution. The refined FETs demonstrate field-effect hole mobilities up to 1.61 cm2 V-1 s-1 and an on/off ratio surpassing 106 . Moreover, the devices show impressive operational and environmental stability and retain their functional performance even after being exposed to ambient conditions with a temperature of 45 °C and humidity of 45% for over 150 h.

Enhanced removal organic compounds and particles from cooking fume using activated sludge scrubber filled loofah: From performance to the mechanism

The catering industry's growth has resulted in cooking fume pollution becoming a major concern in people's lives. As a result, its removal has become a core research focus. Natural loofah is an ideal biofilm carrier, providing a conducive environment for microorganisms to grow. This study utilized natural loofah to fill domesticated activated sludge in a bioscrubber, forming biofilms that enhance the ability to purify cooking fume. This study found that the biomass of loofah biofilms per gram is 104.56 mg. The research also determined the removal efficiencies for oils, Non-methane total hydrocarbons (NMHC), PM2.5, and PM10 from cooking fumes, which were 91.53%, 67.53%, 75.25%, and 82.23%, respectively. The maximum elimination capacity for cooking fumes was found to be 20.7 g/(m3·h). Additionally, the study determined the kinetic parameters for the biodegradation of oils (Kc and Vmax) to be 4.69 mg L-1 and 0.026 h-1, respectively, while the enzyme activities of lipase and catalase stabilized at 75.50 U/mgprots and 67.95 U/mgprots. The microbial consortium identified in the biofilms belonged to the phylum Proteobacteria and consisted mainly of Sphingomonas, Mycobacterium, and Lactobacillus, among others.

Ferroelectricity in Epitaxial Perovskite Oxide Bi2WO6 Films with One-Unit-Cell Thickness

Retaining ferroelectricity in ultrathin films or nanostructures is crucial for miniaturizing ferroelectric devices, but it is a challenging task due to intrinsic depolarization and size effects. In this study, we have shown that it is possible to stably maintain in-plane polarization in an extremely thin, one-unit-cell thick epitaxial Bi2WO6 film. The use of a perfectly lattice-matched NdGaO3 (110) substrate for the Bi2WO6 film minimizes strain and enhances stability. We attribute the residual polarization in this ultrathin film to the crystal stability of the Bi-O octahedral framework against structural distortions. Our findings suggest that ferroelectricity can surpass the critical thickness limit through proper strain engineering, and the Bi2WO6/NdGaO3 (110) system presents a potential platform for designing low-energy consumption, nonvolatile ferroelectric memories.

Realizing On/Off Ratios over 104 for Sub-2 nm Vertical Transistors

Vertical transistors hold promise for the development of ultrascaled transistors. However, their on/off ratios are limited by a strong source-drain tunneling current in the off state, particularly for vertical devices with a sub-5 nm channel length. Here, we report an approach for suppressing the off-state tunneling current by designing the barrier height via a van der Waals metal contact. Via lamination of the Pt electrode on a MoS2 vertical transistor, a high Schottky barrier is observed due to their large work function difference, thus suppressing direct tunneling currents. Meanwhile, this "low-energy" lamination process ensures an optimized metal/MoS2 interface with minimized interface states and defects. Together, the highest on/off ratios of 5 × 105 and 104 are realized in vertical transistors with 5 and 2 nm channel lengths, respectively. Our work not only pushes the on/off ratio limit of vertical transistors but also provides a general rule for reducing short-channel effects in ultrascaled devices.

Mobility Enhancement of Strained MoS2 Transistor on Flat Substrate

Strain engineering has been proposed as a promising method to boost the carrier mobility of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors. However, state-of-the-art straining approaches are largely based on putting 2D semiconductors on flexible substrates or rough substrate with nanostructures (e.g., nanoparticles, nanorods, ripples), where the observed mobility change is not only dependent on channel strain but could be impacted by the change of dielectric environment as well as rough interface scattering. Therefore, it remains an open question whether the pure lattice strain could improve the carrier mobilities of 2D semiconductors, limiting the achievement of high-performance 2D transistors. Here, we report a strain engineering approach to fabricate highly strained MoS2 transistors on a flat substrate. By mechanically laminating a prefabricated MoS2 transistor onto a custom-designed trench structure on flat substrate, well-controlled strain can be uniformly generated across the 2D channel. In the meantime, the substrate and the back-gate dielectric layer remain flat without any roughness-induced scattering effect or variation of the dielectric environment. Based on this technique, we demonstrate the MoS2 electron mobility could be enhanced by tension strain and decreased by compression strain, consistent with theoretical predictions. The highest mobility enhancement is 152% for monolayer MoS2 and 64% for bilayer MoS2 transistors, comparable to that of a silicon device. Our method not only provides a compatible approach to uniformly strain the layered semiconductors on flat and solid substrate but also demonstrates an effective method to boost the carrier mobilities of 2D transistors.

Detection of Microplastics Based on a Liquid-Solid Triboelectric Nanogenerator and a Deep Learning Method

Microplastics are sub-millimeter-sized fragments of plastics, which have been found in environments to a great extent. They are relatively new pollutants that are difficult to be degraded. They not only cause irreversible adverse effects on microorganisms, animals, and plants but also enter the human body through the food chain and affect human health. However, due to their small size, variety, and differences in physical and chemical properties of microplastics, traditional detection and identification still face challenges. This work provides a method for detecting and classifying microplastics in liquids using a liquid-solid triboelectric nanogenerator (LS-TENG) in combination with a deep learning model. The experiment showed that the type and content of microplastics in the liquid had a great effect on the contact electrification between the liquid and the perfluoroethylene-propylene copolymer. After adding polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene microplastics to the liquids, it was found that the type and content of different microplastics have a significant impact on the output voltage signal of the LS-TENG sensor. When the mass fraction of microplastics ranged from 0.025 to 0.25 wt %, the voltage output of the LS-TENG sensor had a linear relationship with the mass fraction of microplastics. Therefore, a method for quantitatively detecting the content of microplastics using the LS-TENG sensor has been established. Based on the LS-TENG output voltage signal, a convolutional neural network deep learning model was used to identify different types of labels, and high recognition accuracy was achieved. These are of great significance for expanding the application prospect of LS-TENG and realizing the detection of microplastics in liquids.

Novel XIAP mutation with early-onset Crohn's disease complicated with acute heart failure: a case report

BACKGROUND

The X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) protein is encoded by the XIAP gene and is critical for multiple cell responses and plays a role in preventing cell death. XIAP mutations are associated with several diseases, primarily including hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We report the clinical features and results associated with hemizygous mutation of the XIAP gene in a young male with Crohn's disease complicated with acute heart failure.This 16-year-old patient ultimately died of heart failure.

CASE PRESENTATION

A young male of 16 years of age was initially diagnosed with Crohn's disease based on evidences from endoscopic and histological findings. Although supportive care, anti-infective drugs and biologics were administered consecutively for 11 months, his clinical manifestations and laboratory indices (patient's condition) did not improved. Additionally, the patient exhibited a poor nutritional status and sustained weight loss. Subsequently, acute heart failure led to the exacerbation of the patient's condition. He was diagnosed with wet beriberi according to thiamine deficiency, but the standard medical therapy for heart failure and thiamine supplementation did not reverse the adverse outcomes. Comprehensive genetic analysis of peripheral blood-derived DNA revealed a novel hemizygous mutation of the XIAP gene (c.1259_1262 delACAG), which was inherited from his mother.

CONCLUSION

A novel XIAP mutation (c.1259_1262 delACAG) was identified in this study. It may be one of the potential pathogenic factors in Crohn's disease and plays an important role in the progression of heart failure. Additionally, thiamine deficiency triggers a vicious cycle.

Ultimate Limit in Optoelectronic Performances of Monolayer WSe2 Sloping-Channel Transistors

Atomically thin monolayer two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with natural immunity to short channel effects are promising candidates for sub-10 nm very large-scale integration technologies. Herein, the ultimate limit in optoelectronic performances of monolayer WSe₂ field-effect transistors (FETs) is examined by constructing a sloping channel down to 6 nm. Using a simple scaling method compatible with current micro/nanofabrication technologies, we achieve a record high saturation current up to 1.3 mA/μm at room temperature, surpassing any reported monolayer 2D semiconductor transistors. Meanwhile, quasi-ballistic transport in WSe₂ FETs is first demonstrated; the extracted high saturation velocity of 4.2 × 10⁶ cm/s makes it suitable for extremely sensitive photodetectors. Furthermore, the photoresponse speed can be improved by reducing channel length due to an electric field-assisted detrapping process of photogenerated carriers in localized states. As a result, the sloping-channel device exhibits a faster response, higher detectivity, and additional polarization resolution ability compared to planar micrometer-scale devices.

Using stable isotopes (δ2H and δ18O) and hydrochemistry to understand the genesis and hydrochemical processes of groundwater in Chongming Island, Yangtze Estuary

Groundwater is an indispensable freshwater resource and its quality is significant in supporting sustainable social and economic development, particularly in estuarine islands where aquifers are complicated. In this study, a total of 19 groundwater and 4 surface water samples were collected in September 2022 to identify the origin and hydrogeochemical evolution processes of groundwater using stable isotopes and hydrochemistry in Chongming Island, which is the largest estuarine alluvial island in the world. The stable isotopic composition indicated that shallow groundwater and surface water are all derived from precipitation recharge under a humid climate, and the evaporative effect incurs the enrichment of isotopic compositions. The shallow groundwater and surface water were primarily of Ca-HCO₃ type. Gibbs diagram, ionic correlation analysis, ionic ratios analysis, and mineral saturation indices suggested that water-rock interactions like carbonate and silicate weathering play a vital role in groundwater chemistry, but cation exchange reactions are weak. Revelle index (RI) result indicated that 10.5% of shallow groundwater samples were found to suffer seawater intrusion. The NO₃^- concentrations were between l2.0 and 180.8 mg/L with 31.6% of groundwater samples exceeding the World health organization (WHO) standards (50 mg/L). Agricultural activities and industrial activities were found to be mainly responsible for groundwater pollution in shallow groundwater. The findings of this study provide a scientific basis for better managing groundwater resources on coastal estuarine islands.

[Epidemiological characteristics and spatio-temporal distribution of pulmonary tuberculosis cases reported in students from Guizhou Province, 2011-2020]

Objective: To analyze the trend of epidemiological characteristics and spatiotemporal distribution of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) among smear-positive or other types of students in Guizhou Province from 2011 to 2020, and to provide a reference for improving prevention and control measures. Methods: Data were collected from the Chinese Information System's Notifiable Disease and Tuberculosis Management Information System for disease control and prevention, the Joinpoint 4.9.1.0 software was used to analyze the trend of registration rate; the ArcGIS 10.6 software was used to construct a ring map and to perform spatial autocorrelation analysis; the SaTScan 9.7 software was used for spatial-temporal scan statistics. Results: A total of 32 682 student PTB cases were reported in Guizhou Province from 2011 to 2020, including 5 949 (18.20%) smear-positive cases. Most cases occurred from high school students of 16 to 18 years old (43.99%, 14 376/32 682); the annual average registered rate was 36.22/100 000, the highest in 2018 (52.90/100 000), and the registration rate showed an increasing trend. Meanwhile, a similar trend of registration rate was observed among smear-positive or other types of students. The spatialtemporal heterogeneity was found that the "high-high" clustering patterns of smear-positive or other types were aggregated in Bijie City. Six spatialtemporal clusters with statistically significant (all P<0.001) were detected among smear-positive or other cases, respectively. Conclusions: Upward trend with spatial- temporal clusters of PTB cases reported in students from Guizhou Province from 2011 to 2020. Surveillance should be strengthened for high school students, and regular screening should be conducted in high-risk areas to control the source of infection and reduce the risk of transmission.

Bridging Synthesis and Controllable Doping of Monolayer 4 in. Length Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides Single Crystals with High Electron Mobility

Epitaxial growth and controllable doping of wafer-scale atomically thin semiconductor single crystals are two central tasks to tackle the scaling challenge of transistors. Despite considerable efforts are devoted, addressing such crucial issues simultaneously under 2D confinement is yet to be realized. Here, an ingenious strategy to synthesize record-breaking 4 in. length Fe-doped transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) single crystals on industry-compatible c-plane sapphire without special miscut angle is designed. Atomically thin transistors with high electron mobility (≈146 cm² V^-1 s^-1 ) and remarkable on/off current ratio (≈10⁹ ) are fabricated based on 4 in. length Fe-MoS₂ single crystals, due to the ultralow contact resistance (≈489 Ω µm). In-depth characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the introduction of Fe significantly decreases the formation energy of parallel steps on sapphire surfaces and contributes to the edge-nucleation of unidirectional alignment TMDCs domains (>99%). This work represents a substantial leap in terms of bridging synthesis and doping of wafer-scale 2D semiconductor single crystals, which should promote the further device downscaling and extension of Moore's law.

Highly reproducible van der Waals integration of two-dimensional electronics on the wafer scale

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) have attracted tremendous interest for transistor applications. However, the fabrication of 2D transistors using traditional lithography or deposition processes often causes undesired damage and contamination to the atomically thin lattices, partially degrading the device performance and leading to large variation between devices. Here we demonstrate a highly reproducible van der Waals integration process for wafer-scale fabrication of high-performance transistors and logic circuits from monolayer MoS₂ grown by chemical vapour deposition. By designing a quartz/polydimethylsiloxane semirigid stamp and adapting a standard photolithography mask-aligner for the van der Waals integration process, our strategy ensures a uniform mechanical force and a bubble-free wrinkle-free interface during the pickup/release process, which is crucial for robust van der Waals integration over a large area. Our scalable van der Waals integration process allows damage-free integration of high-quality contacts on monolayer MoS₂ at the wafer scale and enables high-performance 2D transistors. The van-der-Waals-contacted devices display an atomically clean interface with much smaller threshold variation, higher on-current, smaller off-current, larger on/off ratio and smaller subthreshold swing than those fabricated with conventional lithography. The approach is further used to create various logic gates and circuits, including inverters with a voltage gain of up to 585, and logic OR gates, NAND gates, AND gates and half-adder circuits. This scalable van der Waals integration method may be useful for reliable integration of 2D semiconductors with mature industry technology, facilitating the technological transition of 2D semiconductor electronics.

Tracking cubic ice at molecular resolution

Ice is present everywhere on Earth and has an essential role in several areas, such as cloud physics, climate change and cryopreservation. The role of ice is determined by its formation behaviour and associated structure. However, these are not fully understood1. In particular, there is a long-standing debate about whether water can freeze to form cubic ice-a currently undescribed phase in the phase space of ordinary hexagonal ice2-6. The mainstream view inferred from a collection of laboratory data attributes this divergence to the inability to discern cubic ice from stacking-disordered ice-a mixture of cubic and hexagonal sequences7-11. Using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy combined with low-dose imaging, we show here the preferential nucleation of cubic ice at low-temperature interfaces, resulting in two types of separate crystallization of cubic ice and hexagonal ice from water vapour deposition at 102 K. Moreover, we identify a series of cubic-ice defects, including two types of stacking disorder, revealing the structure evolution dynamics supported by molecular dynamics simulations. The realization of direct, real-space imaging of ice formation and its dynamic behaviour at the molecular level provides an opportunity for ice research at the molecular level using transmission electron microscopy, which may be extended to other hydrogen-bonding crystals.

Transradial access with Simmons guiding catheter for carotid artery stenting: Feasibility and procedural complications in a single-center experience

BACKGROUND

There is an increasing number of transradial approach (TRA) for carotid artery stenting (CAS), however, similar techniques and materials as for femoral access are used. We report the results of TRA lower profile technique for CAS using a 7 F Simmons guiding catheter, especially in terms of feasibility and procedural safety in a single center.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We retrospectively analyzed 68 consecutive patients with symptomatic extracranial carotid stenoses who underwent 75 CAS between January 2018 and December 2021. The success and crossover rate, procedural time, fluoroscopy, clinical outcomes, technical considerations, and procedural complications were analyzed.

RESULTS

TRA CAS with Simmons guiding catheter was successful in 67/75 (89.3%) cases, with a 7 (9.3%) crossover rate. Fluoroscopy mean time was 15.8 minutes. Two forearm hematomas were described. No ischemic or surgical site complications were reported.

CONCLUSIONS

In our experience frontline TRA with a 7 F Simmons guiding catheter is feasible with high procedural success and a low rate of access site complications.

Wafer-scale high-κ dielectrics for two-dimensional circuits via van der Waals integration

The practical application of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors for high-performance electronics requires the integration with large-scale and high-quality dielectrics-which however have been challenging to deposit to date, owing to their dangling-bonds-free surface. Here, we report a dry dielectric integration strategy that enables the transfer of wafer-scale and high-κ dielectrics on top of 2D semiconductors. By utilizing an ultra-thin buffer layer, sub-3 nm thin Al₂O₃ or HfO₂ dielectrics could be pre-deposited and then mechanically dry-transferred on top of MoS₂ monolayers. The transferred ultra-thin dielectric film could retain wafer-scale flatness and uniformity without any cracks, demonstrating a capacitance up to 2.8 μF/cm², equivalent oxide thickness down to 1.2 nm, and leakage currents of ~10^-7A/cm². The fabricated top-gate MoS₂ transistors showed intrinsic properties without doping effects, exhibiting on-off ratios of ~10⁷, subthreshold swing down to 68 mV/dec, and lowest interface states of 7.6×10⁹cm^-2 eV^-1. We also show that the scalable top-gate arrays can be used to construct functional logic gates. Our study provides a feasible route towards the vdW integration of high-κ dielectric films using an industry-compatible ALD process with well-controlled thickness, uniformity and scalability.

Label-free and sensitive fluorescent sensing of ten-eleven translocation enzyme via cascaded recycling signal amplifications

The sensitive detection of ten-eleven translocation (TET) dioxygenase is of significance for understanding the demethylation mechanism of 5-methylocytosine (5mC), which is responsible for a wide range of biological functions that can affect gene expression in eukaryotic species. Here, a non-label and sensitive fluorescence biosensing method for TET assay using TET1 as the model target molecule is established on the basis of target-triggered Mg²⁺-dependent DNAzyme and catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA)-mediated multiple signal amplification cascades. 5mC sites in the hairpin DNA probe are first oxidized by TET1 into 5-carboxycytosine, which are further reduced by pyridine borane into dihydrouracil, followed by its recognition and cleavage by the USER enzyme to liberate active DNAzyme and G-quadruplex sequences from the probe. The DNAzyme further cyclically cleaves the substrate hairpins to trigger subsequent CHA reaction and DNAzyme cleavage cycles for yielding many G-quadruplex strands. Thioflavin T dye then intercalates into G-quadruplexes to cause a magnificent increase of fluorescence for high sensitivity assay of TET1 with 47 fM detection limit. And, application of this method for TET1 monitoring in diluted serum has also been confirmed.

Insights into electronic properties of strained two-dimensional semiconductors by out-of-plane bending

Strain engineering is an important strategy to modulate the electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors. In experiments, an effective and feasible method to induce strains on 2D semiconductors is the out-of-plane bending. However, in contrast to the in-plane methods, it will generate a combined strain effect on 2D semiconductors, which deserves further explorations. In this work, we theoretically investigate the carrier transport-related electronic properties of arsenene, antimonene, phosphorene, and MoS₂under the out-of-plane bending. The bending effect can be disassembled into the in-plane and out-of-plane rolling strains. We find that the rolling always degrades the transport performance, while the in-plane strain could boost carrier mobilities by restraining the intervalley scattering. In other words, pursuing the maximum in-plane strain at the expense of minimum rolling should be the primary strategy to promote transports in 2D semiconductors through bending. Electrons in 2D semiconductors usually suffer from the serious intervalley scattering caused by optical phonons. The in-plane strain can break the crystal symmetry and separate nonequivalent energy valleys at band edges energetically, confining carrier transports at the Brillouin zone Γ point and eliminating the intervalley scattering. Investigation results show that the arsenene and antimonene are suitable for the bending technology, because of their small layer thicknesses which can relieve the rolling burden. Their electron and hole mobilities can be doubled simultaneously, compared with their unstrained 2D structures. From this study, the rules for the out-of-plane bending technology towards promoting transport abilities in 2D semiconductors are obtained.

Ferroelectric Wide-Bandgap Metal Halide Perovskite Field-Effect Transistors: Toward Transparent Electronics

Transparent field-effect transistors (FETs) are attacking intensive interest for constructing fancy "invisible" electronic products. Presently, the main technology for realizing transparent FETs is based on metal oxide semiconductors, which have wide-bandgap but generally demand sputtering technique or high-temperature (>350 °C) solution process for fabrication. Herein, a general device fabrication strategy for metal halide perovskite (MHP) FETs is shown, by which transparent perovskite FETs are successfully obtained using low-temperature (<150 °C) solution process. This strategy involves the employment of ferroelectric copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) as the dielectric, which conquers the challenging issue of gate-electric-field screening effect in MHP FETs. Additionally, an ultra-thin SnO₂ is inserted between the source/drain electrodes and MHPs to facilitate electron injection. Consequently, n-type semi-transparent MAPbBr₃ FETs and fully transparent MAPbCl₃ FETs which can operate well at room temperature with mobility over 10^-3  cm²  V^-1  s^-1 and on/off ratio >10³ are achieved for the first time. The low-temperature solution processability of these FETs makes them particularly attractive for applications in low-cost, large-area transparent electronics.

Cane Molasses Derived N-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots: Dynamic Quenching Synergistically Photoinduced Electron Transfer for the Instant Detection of Nitrofuran Antibiotics

The development of a highly selective, simple, and rapid detection method for nitrofuran antibiotics (NFs) is of great significance for food safety, environmental protection, and human health. To meet these needs, in this work, cyan-color highly fluorescent N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) were synthesized using cane molasses as the carbon source and ethylenediamine as the nitrogen source. The synthesized N-GQDs have an average particle size of 6 nm, a high fluorescence intensity with 9 times that of undoped GQDs, and a high quantum yield (24.4%) which is more than 6 times that of GQDs (3.9%). A fluorescence sensor based on N-GQDs for the detection of NFs was established. The sensor shows advantages of fast detection, high selectivity, and sensitivity. The limit of detection for furazolidone (FRZ) was 0.29 μM, the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.97 μM, and the detection range was 5-130 μM. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of the sensor was explored by fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, Stern-Volmer quenching constant, Zeta potential, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. A fluorescence quenching mechanism of dynamic quenching synergized with photoinduced electron transfer was revealed. The developed sensor was also successfully applied for detecting FRZ in various real samples, and the results were satisfactory.

Effect of the N-hexanoyl-L-homoserine Lactone on the Carbon Fixation Capacity of the Algae-Bacteria System

Algae-bacteria systems are used widely in wastewater treatment. N-hexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (AHL) plays an important role in algal-bacteria communication. However, little study has been conducted on the ability of AHLs to regulate algal metabolism and the carbon fixation ability, especially in algae-bacteria system. In this study, we used the Microcystis aeruginosa + Staphylococcus ureilyticus strain as a algae-bacteria system. The results showed that 10 ng/L C₆-HSL effectively increased the chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration and carbon fixation enzyme activities in the algae-bacteria group and algae group, in which Chl-a, carbonic anhydrase activity, and Rubisco enzyme increased by 40% and 21%, 56.4% and 137.65%, and 66.6% and 10.2%, respectively, in the algae-bacteria group and algae group, respectively. The carbon dioxide concentration mechanism (CCM) model showed that C₆-HSL increased the carbon fixation rate of the algae-bacteria group by increasing the CO₂ transport rate in the water and the intracellular CO₂ concentration. Furthermore, the addition of C₆-HSL promoted the synthesis and secretion of the organic matter of algae, which provided biogenic substances for bacteria in the system. This influenced the metabolic pathways and products of bacteria and finally fed back to the algae. This study provided a strategy to enhance the carbon fixation rate of algae-bacteria consortium based on quorum sensing.

Physiological responses to acute hypoxia in the liver of largemouth bass by alteration of mitochondrial function and Ca2+ exchange

Oxygen is a critical factor for most organisms and this is especially true for aquatic animals. Unfortunately, high-density aquaculture farming practices and environmental degradation will inevitably lead to hypoxic stress in fishes such as largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Thus, characterizing the physiological responses during acute hypoxia exposure is extremely important for understanding the adaptation mechanisms of largemouth bass to hypoxia. The present study aimed to investigate mitochondrial function and Ca²⁺ exchange in largemouth bass under hypoxic conditions. Largemouth bass were subjected to hypoxia (1.2 ± 0.2 mg/L) for 24 h Liver mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) parameters were analyzed. We used Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to further elucidate the pattern of energy metabolism. Changes of Ca²⁺ concentrations were observed in primary hepatocytes of largemouth bass under hypoxic conditions. Our results indicate that the morphology and function of the mitochondria and ER were altered under hypoxia. First, the occurrence of autophagy was accompanied by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and electron transport chain (ETC) activity modulation under hypoxia. Second, hypoxia enhanced mitochondrial fusion and fission, mitochondrial biosynthesis, and ER quality control in the early stages of hypoxic stress (before 8 h). Third, hypoxia modulated tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle flux and caused the accumulation of TCA intermediate metabolites (citric acid and oxoglutaric acid). Additionally, Ca²⁺ efflux in the ER was observed., and the genes for Ca²⁺ transporters presented high expression levels in cellular and mitochondrial membranes. Collectively, the above physiological responses of the mitochondria and ER contributed to maintaining energy production to withstand the hypoxic stress in largemouth bass. These results provide novel insights into the physiological and metabolic changes in largemouth bass under hypoxic conditions.

GaAs Nanowire Photodetectors Based on Au Nanoparticles Modification

A high-performance GaAs nanowire photodetector was fabricated based on the modification of Au nanoparticles (NPs). Au nanoparticles prepared by thermal evaporation were used to modify the defects on the surface of GaAs nanowires. Plasmons and Schottky barriers were also introduced on the surface of the GaAs nanowires, to enhance their light absorption and promote the separation of carriers inside the GaAs nanowires. The research results show that under the appropriate modification time, the dark current of GaAs nanowire photodetectors was reduced. In addition, photocurrent photodetectors increased from 2.39 × 10^-10 A to 1.26 × 10^-9 A. The responsivity of GaAs nanowire photodetectors correspondingly increased from 0.569 A∙W^-1 to 3.047 A∙W^-1. The reasons for the improvement of the photodetectors' performance after modification were analyzed through the energy band theory model. This work proposes a new method to improve the performance of GaAs nanowire photodetectors.

Generating Random SAT Instances: Multiple Solutions could be Predefined and Deeply Hidden

The generation of SAT instances is an important issue in computer science, and it is useful for researchers to verify the effectiveness of SAT solvers. Addressing this issue could inspire researchers to propose new search strategies. SAT problems exist in various real-world applications, some of which have more than one solution. However, although several algorithms for generating random SAT instances have been proposed, few can be used to generate hard instances that have multiple predefined solutions. In this paper, we propose the KHidden-M algorithm to generate SAT instances with multiple predefined solutions that could be hard to solve by the local search strategy when the number of predefined solutions is small enough and the Hamming distance between them is not less than half of the solution length. Specifically, first, we generate an SAT instance that is satisfied by all of the predefined solutions. Next, if the generated SAT instance does not satisfy the hardness condition, then a strategy will be conducted to adjust clauses through multiple iterations to improve the hardness of the whole instance. We propose three strategies to generate the SAT instance in the first part. The first strategy is called the random strategy, which randomly generates clauses that are satisfied by all of the predefined solutions. The other two strategies are called the estimating strategy and greedy strategy, and using them, we attempt to generate an instance that directly satisfies or is closer to the hardness condition for the local search strategy. We employ two SAT solvers (i.e., WalkSAT and Kissat) to investigate the hardness of the SAT instances generated by our algorithm in the experiments. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the random, estimating and greedy strategies. Compared to the state-of-the-art algorithm for generating SAT instances with predefined solutions, namely, M-hidden, our algorithm could be more effective in generating hard SAT instances.

Lighting-up aptamer transcriptional amplification for highly sensitive and label-free FEN1 detection

Specific and sensitive detection of flap endonuclease 1 (FEN1), an enzyme biomarker involved in DNA replications and several metabolic pathways, is of high values for the diagnosis of various cancers. In this work, a fluorescence strategy based on transcriptional amplification of lighting-up aptamers for label-free, low background and sensitive monitoring of FEN1 is developed. FEN1 cleaves the 5' flap of the DNA complex probe with double flaps to form a notched dsDNA, which is ligated by T4 DNA ligase to yield fully complementary dsDNA. Subsequently, T7 RNA polymerase binds the promoter region to initiate cyclic transcriptional generation of many RNA aptamers that associate with the malachite green dye to yield highly amplified fluorescence for detecting FEN1 with detection limit as low as 0.22 pM in a selective way. In addition, the method can achieve diluted serum monitoring of low concentrations of FEN1, exhibiting its potential for the diagnosis of early-stage cancers.

MRI parameters for predicting the effect of ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound in the ablation of uterine fibroids

AIM

To study the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters in predicting the efficacy of ultrasonic ablation of fibroids.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 91 patients were divided into groups based on non-perfused volume (NPV) ratio and blood supply type. The preoperative MRI parameters were measured and analysed. A correlation analysis between the MRI parameters and the NPV ratio was performed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to analyse and determine the cut-off value of MRI parameters to predict the ablation rate of fibroids.

RESULTS

The uterine fibroids group with an NPV ratio <80% and the group with an NPV ratio of ≥80% had significant differences in signal intensity (SI) at MRI T2-weighted imaging (WI), fibroid-to-rectus abdominis SI ratio (SIR) at T2WI, and blood supply type (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in fibroid volume, T2WI signal uniformity, and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values. The ADC value and SI and SIR at MRI T2WI in the group with poor blood supply were lower than those in the group with a rich blood supply (p<0.05). SI at MRI T2WI correlated negatively with the NPV ratio. The cut-off values for SI and SIR at MRI T2WI of fibroids whose NPV ratio exceeds 80% were 220.58 and 1.315, respectively.

CONCLUSION

SI at MRI T2WI and blood supply type could be predictors of the efficacy of ablation. Ultrasonic ablation of fibroids with MRI T2WI hyperintensity and a rich blood supply had poor efficacy.

Interlayer Transition Induced Infrared Response in ReS2/2D Perovskite van der Waals Heterostructure Photodetector

The emerging Ruddlesden-Popper two-dimensional perovskite (2D PVK) has recently joined the family of 2D semiconductors as a potential competitor for building van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures in future optoelectronics. However, to date, most of the reported heterostructures based on 2D PVKs suffer from poor spectral response that is caused by intrinsic wide bandgap of constituting materials. Herein, a direct heterointerface bandgap (∼0.4 eV) between 2D PVK and ReS₂ is demonstrated. The strong interlayer coupling reduces the energy interval at the heterojunction region so that the heterostructure shows high sensitivity with the spectral response expanding to 2000 nm. The large type-II band offsets exceeding 1.1 eV ensure fast photogenerated carriers separation at the heterointerface. When this heterostructure is used as a self-driven photodetector, it exhibits a record high detectivity up to 1.8 × 10¹⁴ Jones, surpassing any reported 2D self-driven devices, and an impressive external quantum efficiency of 68%.

A Multifunction Freestanding Liquid-Solid Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on Low-Frequency Mechanical Sloshing

A simple rectangular-structured freestanding liquid-solid triboelectric nanogenerator (LS-TENG) was fabricated, which used fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) films and deionized water (DI) as friction materials. The LS-TENG can effectively convert mechanical energy into electrical energy under the extremely low-frequency shaking of 2 Hz and shows greatly reliable stability. The influence of liquid volume and units on the output performance of the LS-TENG was studied, and the mechanism of the triboelectric electrification process of the LS-TENG was analyzed by COMSOL Multiphysics software. The results show that friction materials, liquid types, and number of units have a great effect on the output performance of the LS-TENG. Under the optimized conditions, the designed array LS-TENG shows high output performance with the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and transferred charge of 120 V, 3.9 μA, and 133 nC, respectively. The LS-TENG can be applied in capacitive storage, AC power, signal acquisition, and self-powered sensor. The multifunctional LS-TENG provides a potentially practical route for harvesting low-frequency mechanical energy in natural environments and enabling multifunctional applications.
