Abstract
Infants diagnosed with allergy to cow's milk protein (CMP) are fed extensively hydrolysed cow's milk formulas, modified soy formulas or even amino acid-based formulas. Hydrolysed rice protein infant formulas have become available and have been shown to be well tolerated by these infants. A prospective open, randomized clinical study to compare the clinical tolerance of a new hydrolysed rice protein formula (HRPF) with an extensively hydrolysed CMP formula (EHF) in the feeding of infants with IgE-mediated cow's milk allergy. Ninety-two infants (46 boys and 46 girls, mean age 4.3 months, range 1.1-10.1 months) diagnosed with IgE-mediated cow's milk allergy were enrolled in the study. Clinical tolerance to the formula products was tested. Clinical evaluation included skin prick tests with whole cow's milk, soya and rice as well as antigens of CMP (beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, casein and bovine seroalbumin), HRPF and EHF and specific IgE determinations to CMP using CAP technology. Patients were randomized to receive either an EHF based on CMP or a new HRPF. Follow-up was at 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. Growth parameters were measured at each visit. One infant showed immediate allergic reaction to EHF, but no reaction was shown by any infant in the HRPF group. The number of infants who did not become tolerant to CMP during the study was not statistically different between the two groups. Measurement of IgE levels of infants allergic to CMP during the study showed no significant differences between the two formula groups. Growth parameters were in the normal range and similar between groups. In this study, the HRPF was well tolerated by infants with moderate to severe symptoms of IgE-mediated CMP allergy. Children receiving this formula showed similar growth and development of clinical tolerance to those receiving an EHF. In accordance with current guidelines, this HRPF was tolerated by more than 90% of children with CMP allergy and therefore could provide an adequate and safe alternative to CMP-hydrolysed formulas for these infants.

Abstract
Tetrazepam is a benzodiazepine that is widely used in Spain as a muscle relaxant, with occasional cutaneous side effects. We report a patient who developed a generalized pruriginous cutaneous reaction compatible with acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) due to tetrazepam. Patch tests with bromazepam, diazepam, and tetrazepam were negative at 48 and 72 hours; however, the tetrazepam patch showed a positive reaction at 10 days. Immunohistochemical studies revealed a mononuclear infiltrate composed of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes. Analysis of interleukin (IL) 8 expression by quantitative polymerase chain reaction revealed increased IL-8 mRNA levels in patch test-positive skin. Lymphoblast transformation test (LTT) was positive with tetrazepam but not with diazepam. Positive patch test and LTT suggested that tetrazepam-specific lymphocytes might be responsible for a T cell-mediated reaction. These results support previous data suggesting an important role for IL-8 and drug-specific T cells in the pathogenesis ofAGEP and imply that the reaction was specific to tetrazepam with no cross-reactivity to other benzodiazepines.

Abstract
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) is a clinical-pathological disorder which is being increasingly diagnosed. It is etiologically associated with hypersensitivity to airborne allergens and/or dietary components. However, immediate hypersensitivity to foods has rarely been proven as the etiologic cause of the disorder. Two patients are presented with a history of rhinoconjunctivitis, allergic asthma, atopic dermatitis and food allergies which are currently under control and who show specific IgE to pulses and chicken respectively. These patients developed acute dysphagia and vomiting immediately after ingesting these foods and following appropriate examination were diagnosed as suffering from EE. The study also showed signs of blood hypereosinophilia while the esophageal manometry revealed a motor disorder characterized by aperistalsis and non-propulsive simultaneous waves affecting the lower two-thirds of the organ composed of smooth muscle. Topical treatment with fluticasone propionate was administered over a period of 3 months, in addition to a diet abstaining from the aforementioned foods and this led to remission of dysphagia and normalization of the endoscopic, histological and manometric studies of the esophagus. This situation remained stable for a considerable length of time after steroid treatment was discontinued, which showed that exposure to foods seemed to be the cause of the esophageal disorder. Similarly, allergies to inhalants and other digestive symptoms which appear upon immediate ingestion of the foods involved would not justify the sudden onset of dysphagia. We offer a pathophysiological explanation for the mechanisms of the disease based on the activation of eosinophils and mast cells by IgE and their ability to disturb the dynamic behavior of the neural and muscle components of the esophageal wall.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Allergic reactions to food can be produced by contaminants that induce sensitization. Among these, Anisakis simplex can cause seafood infestation, and allergic symptoms (urticaria-angioedema, anaphylaxis, and asthma) can follow the eating or handling of affected fish. Although seafood is the principal source of human infections by this parasite, we have found allergic symptoms in 8 patients previously diagnosed as having A simplex sensitization after they ate chicken meat. Chicken feed usually has a high proportion of fishmeal, which might possibly be contaminated by this nematode. OBJECTIVE The aim of our study was to determine whether parasite proteins present in chicken meat could be responsible for the symptoms reported by these subjects. METHODS We carried out in vivo tests (prick, bronchial challenge, and double-blind placebo-controlled challenge with meat chicken) in these 8 patients. We performed immunoblotting using the sera from the 8 patients and controls in order to detect A simplex sensitization. We also investigated the presence of A simplex proteins in sera from chickens fed with fishmeal and in other sera from chickens fed only with cereals. We excluded sensitization to other chicken nematodes by serologic methods. RESULTS All 8 patients presented positive prick and challenges to A simplex. When we used serum from chickens fed with fishmeal as the antigen in blotting, patients 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 recognized a band of 16 kd, also obtained when using pools of fish-shellfish and A simplex larva. No detection was observed with sera from chickens fed with only cereals. CONCLUSION We provide evidence, based on in vivo and in vitro tests, that subjects highly sensitized to A simplex can detect the presence of Anisakis species allergens in chicken meat.

Abstract
BACKGROUND IgE-mediated cow's milk proteins (CMPs) allergy shows a tendency to disappear with age. The sooner tolerance is detected, the earlier the substitute diets can be suspended and the quicker family emotional hardship is alleviated. OBJECTIVE To analyse the specific IgE levels to cow's milk and its proteins, which help to separate tolerant from no tolerant children in the follow-up of infants with allergy to cow's milk. PATIENTS AND METHODS Sixty-six infants diagnosed with IgE-mediated allergy to CMPs were included in this prospective follow-up study. Periodic reassessments were carried out every 6 months until they were 2-years old and then, annually, until tolerance arose or until the last reassessment in which tolerance had not been achieved. Non-tolerant infants were followed, at least, for a period of 3 years. In each visit, the same skin tests and determination of specific IgE (CAP System FEIA) for milk and its proteins were carried out. The open challenge test was repeated unless a clear transgression to milk, which came to be positive, had taken place within the previous 3 months in each of the follow-up visits. Specific IgE levels to milk and its proteins, in different moments of the follow-up were analysed by means of the receiver-operating characteristic curve to predict clinical reactivity. RESULTS Throughout the follow-up 45 (68%) infants became tolerant. The follow-up mean for tolerant infants was 21.2 months whereas for non-tolerant infants it was 58 months. The specific IgE levels which were predictors of the clinical reactivity (positive predictive value (PPV)> or =90%), grew as the age of the infants increased: 1.5, 6 and 14 kU(A)/L for milk in the age range 13-18 and 19-24 months and in the third year, respectively. Specific IgE levels to casein: 0.6, 3 and 5 kU(A)/L, respectively, predicted clinical reactivity (PPV> or =90%) in the different analysed moments of the follow-up. The cut-off points: 2.7, 9 and 24 kU(A)/L for milk and 2, 4.2 and 9 kU(A)/L for casein, respectively, predicted clinical reactivity with an accuracy > or =95% corresponding to a specificity of 90%. CONCLUSIONS Monitorization of specific IgE concentration for milk and casein by means of the CAP system in allergic children to CMPs allows us to predict, to a high degree of probability, clinical reactivity. Age factor must be taken into account to evaluate the specific IgE levels which are predictors of tolerance or clinical reactivity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cereals are among the major foods that account for food hypersensitivity reactions. Salt-soluble proteins appear to be the most important allergens contributing to the asthmatic response. In contrast, very limited information is available regarding cereal allergens responsible for allergic reactions after ingestion of cereal proteins. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the allergenic reactivity of ingested and inhaled cereal allergens in different ages, in order to investigate if the response to different allergens would depend on the sensitization route. METHODS We included 66 patients in three groups. Group 1: 40 children aged 3 to 6 months who suffered from diarrhoea, vomiting, eczema or weight loss after the introduction of cereal formula in their diet and in which a possibility of coeliac disease was discarded. Group 2: 18 adults with food allergy due to cereals tested by prick tests, specific IgE and food challenge. Group 3: eight patients previously diagnosed as having baker's asthma. Sera pool samples were collected from each group of patients and IgE immunoblotting was performed. RESULTS We found an important sensitization to cereal in the 40 children. The most important allergens were wheat followed by barley and rye. Among the adults with cereal allergy, sensitization to other allergens was common, especially to Lolium perenne (rye grass) pollen. Immunoblotting showed similar allergenic detection in the three groups. CONCLUSION Clinically significant reactivity to cereal may be observed in early life. Inhalation and ingestion routes causing cereal allergy seem to involve similar allergens. The diet control was more effective in children. The possibility of cereal allergy after the introduction of cereal formula during the lactation period should not be underestimated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thiomucase is a mucopolysaccharidase obtained from ovine tissues mainly used to facilitate the diffusion of local anaesthetics and in the treatment of cellulitis. A patient with an anaphylaxis in relation to the intramuscular administration of Thiomucase is reported. OBJECTIVE To investigate Thiomucase allergens and their possible relationship with dander allergens and animal albumins. MATERIAL AND METHODS Skin prick tests (SPT) and serum-specific IgE were performed with Thiomucase and danders. Thiomucase SDS-PAGE immunoblotting was performed in order to study allergens. RAST/CAP inhibition and SDS-PAGE immunoblotting inhibition were carried out to study the cross-reactivity. RESULTS Skin prick tests (SPT) were positive to Thiomucase, animal dander (cat, dog, sheep, other), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and echinococcus. Specific IgE was also positive to Thiomucase, animal dander (cat, dog, sheep, other), BSA and echinococcus. In the RAST-CAP inhibition assays BSA was nearly completely inhibited by Thiomucase, Thiomucase was partially inhibited by BSA and cat and Echinococcus granulosus was partially inhibited by sheep and Thiomucase. In the Thiomucase SDS-PAGE immunoblotting several proteins fixed IgE, ranging from 20 kDa to > 94 kDa, the strongest with 43 kDa. The IgE fixation to BSA, cat and sheep in the SDS-PAGE immunoblotting was completely inhibited by the preincubation of the serum with Thiomucase. CONCLUSIONS An IgE-mediated anaphylaxis to Thiomucase is documented. Multiple allergens are recognized in Thiomucase by the patient serum, the main with 43 kDa. Partial cross-reactivity with BSA, cat dander and sheep dander is documented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have shown that allergy to natural rubber latex is associated with cross-reactivity to certain foods such as tomato and potato. The objective was to investigate the clinical and immunologic differences between a group of patients with clinical allergy to tomato and latex and another which had only clinical allergy to tomato. We also aimed to assess, in vitro, the relationship of tomato and latex allergens, which could explain the cross-reactivity. METHODS Forty patients with histories of adverse reactions to tomato and IgE-mediated hypersensitivity were enrolled in the study. Tomato, latex, and potato components were analyzed by SDS-PAGE immunoblotting. CAP and immunoblot inhibition were used to study allergen cross-reactivity. RESULTS Patients from group A had a mean age of 13.2 years, and in group B the mean age was 21.7 years. In group B, 9/10 patients belonged to the latex-fruits syndrome. All patients of both groups tolerated potato. Immunoblotting patterns obtained with patients' sera from pool A showed IgE-binding bands to tomato ranging from 44 to 46 kDa and a triple band at 67 kDa. For latex, there was a strong binding at 44 kDa, and potato showed a strong band of 44 kDa and a 67-kDa triple band. In pool B, the binding to the band of 44 kDa in latex and tomato was more intense than in pool A. In pool A, immunoblot inhibition with potato allergen showed an intense inhibition of the three allergens (potato, latex, and tomato); with latex, inhibition was partial and with tomato, a complete inhibition of tomato and latex was observed, and a partial inhibition of potato. In pool B, the inhibition pattern followed a similar tendency to pool A. The CAP inhibition confirmed the high rate of cross-reactivity between tomato, potato, and latex. CONCLUSIONS In our study, tomato, potato, and latex showed a common band of 44-46 kDa probably corresponding to patatin. This protein could be implicated in the high cross-reactivity between tomato, latex, and potato observed in the immunoblot and CAP inhibition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown elevated serum levels of the cytokines IL-4 and sCD23 in atopic patients and parasitic disease. Gastroallergic anisakiasis is an acute parasitic disease, accompanied by IgE-mediated clinical symptoms and an important increase of specific and total IgE. METHODS Sixteen patients with acute urticaria/angioedema due to parasitism by Anisakis simplex after intake of raw or undercooked fish were selected, and serum samples were taken in the emergency room within 24 h (day 0; n=16), after 1 month (n=16), and after 6 months (n=10). Serum samples were studied for specific IgE against A. simplex, total IgE, sCD23, and IL-4. RESULTS Mean values for sCD23 did not change in the observation period. Only 4/16 serum samples showed measurable IL-4 levels. Specific IgE and total IgE levels were found to be elevated after 1 month; after 6 months, they fell to nearly basal values. There was a positive correlation between sCD23 and specific IgE at day 0 and follow-up (r=0.55-0.69, P<0.026); a positive correlation between sCD23 and total IgE (r=0.54-0.62, P<0.056). Basal sCD23 could moderately predict the percentual increment of total IgE in the first month (r=0.56, P<0.038). CONCLUSION Thus, it seems that interindividual variability of sCD23 is an important factor, with higher values predisposing to more production of unrelated IgE, independently of the parasite's action.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A milk-free diet with substitute formula should be established when immediate symptomatic hypersensitivity to cows' milk protein (CMP) is diagnosed, and therefore an accurate diagnosis is very important. OBJECTIVE This study aims to find the optimal cutoff values for specific IgE antibody levels that discriminate between allergic and tolerant infants by using cows' milk and its principal proteins as allergens. METHODS A prospective study was carried out on 170 patients under 1 year old (mean, 4.8 months). These patients were seen consecutively over a 4-year period in our outpatient clinic and for the first time because of a reaction suggesting immediate hypersensitivity after ingestion of cows' milk formula. A clinical history, prick test with cows' milk and its proteins (alpha-lact-albumin, beta-lactoglobulin, and casein), determination of specific IgE antibodies with the CAP system FEIA for the same allergens as for the prick test, and a challenge test according to the diagnostic protocol were performed in all of the children. A study of validity of the prick test (cutoff point, 3 mm) and CAP system by using different cutoff points in the specific IgE values for cows' milk and its proteins were also analyzed. RESULTS Prevalence of immediate symptomatic hypersensitivity to CMP in this study was 44%. When both the whole milk and its principal milk proteins were used in the prick test, the negative predictive value was very high, and a negative value excluded allergy in 97% of the patients. When the different cutoff points of the specific IgE for milk were analyzed, 2.5 KU(A)/L had a positive predictive value of 90% and 5 KU(A)/L had a positive predictive value of 95%. CONCLUSIONS When diagnosing immediate hypersensitivity to CMP in infants, negative skin test responses exclude allergy in most of the patients. If the prick test response is positive, specific IgE levels for cows' milk may be helpful. Abstract
BACKGROUND Lentils seem to be the most common legume implicated in pediatric allergic patients in the Mediterranean area. However, no lentil allergen has been isolated and characterized. OBJECTIVE We sought to purify and characterize relevant IgE-binding proteins from boiled lentil extracts. METHODS IgE-binding proteins from crude and boiled lentil extracts were detected with a pool of sera from patients with lentil allergy. Allergens were isolated by gel-filtration chromatography followed by cation- and anion-exchange chromatography or by reverse-phase HPLC. Their characterization included N-terminal amino acid sequencing, complex asparagine-linked glycan detection, specific IgE immunodetection with 22 individual sera from allergic patients, and immunoblot and CAP inhibition assays. RESULTS Heat treatment of lentils produced substantial changes in the SDS-PAGE patterns of whole extracts, mainly a strong increase of 12- to 16-kd bands and a decrease of 25- to 45-kd components. Major IgE-binding proteins from the boiled lentil extract were located in the 12- to 16-kd and 45- to 70-kd ranges. Two allergens of 16 kd, proteins L1 and L2, and another one of 12 kd, protein L3, were purified. N-terminal sequencing indicated that all 3 were related and allowed their identification as gamma-vicilin subunits. Protein L1 was recognized by 68% of the individual sera tested and inhibited 64% of the IgE binding by commercial lentil CAPs. A second type of allergen of 66 kd, named protein H, was also isolated and identified as a seed-specific biotinylated protein. Protein H reacted with 41% of the individual sera and produced 45% inhibition in CAP inhibition assays. CONCLUSIONS Two different types of allergens have been identified in boiled lentils. Those of 12 to 16 kd, called Len c 1, correspond to gamma-vicilin subunits, and those of 66 kd, designated Len c 2, correspond to seed-specific biotinylated protein. Homology with proteins from other legume species can explain potential cross-reactions among these foods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pollen from olive trees (Olea europaea ) is a cause of pollinosis and an aggravating of asthma in Mediterranean regions. Recently, Ole e 1, the major allergen from olive tree pollen, has been isolated and its amino acid sequence has been elucidated. It is a glycoprotein whose carbohydrate moiety is involved in an IgE-binding epitope responsible for cross-reactivity among plant glycoproteins. However, the allergenicity of the free carbohydrate side chains remains to be clarified. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to isolate the main carbohydrate component of Ole e 1 allergen and analyze its IgE-binding and histamine-release capabilities. METHODS Deglycosylation treatment of Ole e 1 with PNGase F and gel exclusion chromatography were used to isolate the main sugar component of the allergen. Sera of patients who are allergic to olive pollen and sera sensitive to Ole e 1 have been used in dot blotting assays of IgE binding to the isolated carbohydrate. Heparinized whole blood obtained from patients sensitive to Ole e 1 were stimulated by the free carbohydrate; the resulting histamine release was measured. RESULTS The main sugar component of Ole e 1 has been isolated. Free carbohydrate was able to bind IgE from sera of patients allergic to olive pollen; the sera of 65% of these patients contained anticarbohydrate reacting IgE, and 100% of those patients were sensitive to Ole e 1. The free carbohydrate promoted in vitro histamine release from basophils of sensitized patients. CONCLUSION The carbohydrate moieties of allergenic glycoproteins can constitute significant determinants on the binding to IgE of the sera from patients who are hypersensitive and can be responsible for inducing histamine release from blood cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hydrolysate formulas are safe for most infants who are allergic to cow's milk. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical tolerance and safety of an extensively hydrolyzed casein-whey protein formula in a homogeneous group of patients with immediate cow's milk hypersensitivity. METHODS The study population consisted of 33 infants in whom immediate cow's milk protein allergy had been diagnosed by clinical data, evidence of specific immunoglobulin E antibodies, and positive results in a controlled challenge test with cow's milk proteins. RESULTS The hydrolysate was well tolerated in 31 of the 33 patients, which represented a 94% effectiveness. Using 95% confidence intervals generated for a binomial outcome (reaction-no reaction), the casein-whey protein formula is tolerated by 84.4% to 99% of infants with immediate immunoglobulinE-mediated cow's milk protein allergy. These figures are in the range of values recommended for this type of product. CONCLUSIONS This extensively hydrolyzed casein-whey protein formula is generally safe to feed children with immediate hypersensitivity to cow's milk. However. it is advisable that the first intakes be given under direct medical supervision, in that the occurrence of adverse reactions in highly sensitive infants cannot be unequivocally excluded.

Abstract
Over the last three decades several authors have described the existence of an association between sensitivity to different pollens and sensitivity to diverse edible vegetables. An association between ragweed pollinosis and hypersensitivity to Cucurbitaceae vegetables (e.g., watermelon, melon, cucumber) and banana has been reported. Other authors have found a relationship between birch pollinosis and sensitization to hazelnut, apple, carrot, potato, kiwi and other vegetables. Additionally, several papers have shown the association between mugwort pollinosis and sensitization to celery, carrot, spices, nuts, mustard and Leguminoseae vegetables. Later, some studies showed association between grass pollinosis and sensitization to tomato, potato, green- pea, peanut, watermelon, melon, apple, orange and kiwi. Finally, an association between sensitization to plantain pollen and melon hypersensitivity was also described. The association between pollinosis and edible vegetable sensitization has been explained by the combination of different hypotheses, such as the following: 1) presence of lectins in edible vegetables; 2) existence of IgE to carbohydrates of the glycoproteins (cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants); and, 3) existence of common allergens between pollens and edible vegetables. Up to now three allergens have been identified as responsible for cross-reactivity in these associations: profilin, a 14 kd protein that regulates actin; Bet v 1, the 18 kd birch pollen allergen; and a 60-69 kd allergen. It is important to study in depth these associated sensitizations and the common allergens responsible for them in order to improve diagnostic methods and treatment of these syndromes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An association between sensitization to Compositae pollens and hypersensitivity to hazelnut has been previously described. There is no previous in vitro study about crossreactivity between mugwort pollen and hazelnut. OBJECTIVES To study mugwort pollen and hazelnut allergens and to assess if there is IgE crossreactivity between mugwort pollen and hazelnut. METHODS A serum pool formed by 28 individual sera with specific IgE to mugwort pollen and hazelnut was used to investigate IgE crossreactivity. RAST-inhibition, SDS-PAGE/IEF immunoblotting inhibition assays were performed by preincubation of the sera with mugwort pollen and hazelnut. RESULTS RAST to hazelnut was inhibited up to 63% by mugwort pollen, but the mugwort pollen RAST was only inhibited up to 36% by hazelnut. In SDS-PAGE immunoblotting mugwort pollen showed nine allergens ranging from <16 to 65 kDa and hazelnut had four main allergens: 42 kDa, 17 kDa and <16 kDa (two bands). In the SDS-PAGE immunoblotting inhibition hazelnut partially inhibited all the mugwort pollen bands, except that with 19kDa, whereas mugwort pollen produced a nearly total inhibition of all the hazelnut allergens. In isoelectrofocusing immunoblotting mugwort pollen had two groups of allergens: pI 7.5-8.5 and pI 3.5-5.2 and hazelnut one group of allergens: pI 5.2-5.8. In the isoelectrofocusing immunoblotting inhibition hazelnut produced a partial inhibition of all the bands of mugwort pollen and mugwort pollen partially inhibited all the allergenic bands of hazelnut. CONCLUSIONS The RAST and SDS-PAGE/IEF immunoblotting inhibition results provide evidence of IgE cross reactivity between mugwort pollen and hazelnut allergens. The inhibition of hazelnut by mugwort pollen is higher than the inhibition of mugwort pollen by hazelnut in both RAST inhibition and SDS-PAGE immunoblotting inhibition. These results suggest that mugwort pollen allergens would behave as primary immunogens in the association between sensitivity to mugwort pollen and hazelnut.

Abstract
We evaluated the clinical characteristics found in 29 children who showed allergic symptoms after direct and/or indirect contact with fish, from 197 children diagnosed with IgE-mediated fish hypersensitivity. Allergic reactions to fish through ingestion began in most patients (79%) within the first 24 months of life. All the patients showed cutaneous symptoms, either alone or associated with other clinical manifestations. Whiff and hake were the species more frequently implicated in eliciting clinical manifestations upon ingestion. After diagnosis, all patients were placed on a strict fish avoidance diet. During this period of avoidance, 29 patients reported allergic reactions (mean age 5 years, 6 months; SD 4 years, 2 months) after incidental skin contact with fish. Clinical manifestations after touching fish were only cutaneous in 28 of the 29 studied patients. One showed local urticaria with wheezing. The majority reported two or more episodes. Incidental skin contact with fish could play an important role in accidental encounters with fish particles in children on a fish avoidance diet for fish IgE-mediated hypersensitivity. Such exposures could result in immunologic immediate contact reactions and in some cases could lead to systemic reactions (contact urticaria syndrome).

Abstract
The sera of 20 patients with Compositae pollen allergy were investigated for the presence of IgE antibodies reacting against sunflower pollen by means of RAST and immunoblotting studies. Thirteen IgE-binding bands were detected with molecular weights ranging from 14.4 to 94 kd. Two of these bands, with molecular weights of 24 and 25 kd, contained major allergens that reacted strongly with 100% (24 kd) and 95% (25 kd) of the sera, respectively. Cross-reactivity between sunflower and other Compositae pollens (mugwort, marguerite, dandelion, golden rod, and short ragweed) was revealed by RAST and immunoblotting inhibition experiments. Mugwort pollen exhibited the greatest degree of allergenic homology (cross-reactivity) with sunflower pollen, whereas at the other end of the spectrum, short ragweed showed less cross-reactive epitopes.
