Abstract
We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the surface microtexture of kefir biofilms grown on Theobroma grandiflorum Shum (cupuaçu) juice using atomic force microscopy. Our goal was to investigate the unique monofractal and multifractal spatial patterns of these biofilms to complement the existing limited literature. The biofilms were prepared dispersing four different concentrations of kefir grains in cupuaçu juice. Our morphological analysis showed that the surface of the obtained biofilms is essentially formed by the presence of cupuaçu fibers and microorganisms like lactobacilli and yeast. The topographic height-based parameter analysis reveals that there is a dependence between surface roughness and the concentration of kefir grains used. The strongly anisotropic well-centralized topographical height distribution of the biofilms also exhibited a quasi-symmetrical and platykurtic pattern. The biofilms exhibit comparable levels of spatial complexity, surface percolation and surface homogeneity, which can be attributed to their similar topographic uniformity. This aspect was further supported by the presence of similar multifractality in the biofilms, suggesting that despite their varying topographic roughness, their vertical growth dynamics follow a similar pattern. Our findings demonstrate that the surface roughness of kefir biofilms cultivated on cupuaçu juice is influenced by the concentration of kefir grains in the precursor solution. Abstract
In this study, the morphological properties and micro-roughness of chromium thin film prepared by thermal evaporation technique and confirmed via EDS analysis are examined on different substrates of BK7, Silicon (Si), and glass using atomic force microscope analysis (AFM). Analysis of amplitude parameters, Minkowski functionals, and films' spatial microtexture extracted from AFM analysis showed the difference between glass substrate and the other two (BK7 and Si) substrates for the growth of chromium thin films. In addition, we observed robust signatures of multifractality of the Cr thin films deposited on all substrates we studied. Moreover, we highlight that the Glass substrates displayed the strongest multifractality indicating that such samples present space filling properties distributed over more spatial scales than the samples of BK7 and Si.

Abstract
In this work, we study a model of opinion dynamics considering activation/deactivation of agents. In other words, individuals are not static and can become inactive and drop out from the discussion. A probability [Formula: see text] governs the deactivation dynamics, whereas social interactions are ruled by kinetic exchanges, considering competitive positive/negative interactions. Inactive agents can become active due to interactions with active agents. Our analytical and numerical results show the existence of two distinct non-equilibrium phase transitions, with the occurrence of three phases, namely ordered (ferromagnetic-like), disordered (paramagnetic-like) and absorbing phases. The absorbing phase represents a collective state where all agents are inactive, i.e. they do not participate in the dynamics, inducing a frozen state. We determine the critical value [Formula: see text] above which the system is in the absorbing phase independently of the other parameters. Abstract
In this work, we address a multicoupled dynamics on complex networks with tunable structural segregation. Specifically, we work on a networked epidemic spreading under a vaccination campaign with agents in favor and against the vaccine. Our results show that such coupled dynamics exhibits a myriad of phenomena such as nonequilibrium transitions accompanied by bistability. Besides we observe the emergence of an intermediate optimal segregation level where the community structure enhances negative opinions over vaccination but counterintuitively hinders-rather than favoring-the global disease spreading. Thus our results hint vaccination campaigns should avoid policies that end up segregating excessively antivaccine groups so that they effectively work as echo chambers in which individuals look to confirmation without jeopardizing the safety of the whole population.

Abstract
We analyze a set of discrete-time quantum walks for which the displacements on a chain follow binary aperiodic jumps according to three paradigmatic sequences: Fibonacci, Thue-Morse, and Rudin-Shapiro. We use a generalized Hadamard coin, C[over ̂]_{H}, as well as a generalized Fourier coin, C[over ̂]_{K}. We verify the QW experiences a slowdown of the wave packet spreading, σ^{2}(t)∼t^{α}, by the aperiodic jumps whose exponent, α, depends on the type of aperiodicity. Additional aperiodicity-induced effects also emerge, namely, (1) while the superdiffusive regime (1<α<2) is predominant, α displays an unusual sensibility with the type of coin operator where the more pronounced differences emerge for the Rudin-Shapiro and random protocols and (2) even though the angle θ of the coin operator is homogeneous in space and time, there is a nonmonotonic dependence of α with θ. Fingerprints of the aperiodicity in the hoppings are also found when distributional measures such as the Shannon and von Neumann entropies, the Inverse Participation Ratio, the Jensen-Shannon dissimilarity, and the kurtosis are computed, which allow assessing informational and delocalization features arising from these protocols and understanding the impact of linear and nonlinear correlations of the jump sequence in a quantum walk as well. Finally, we argue the spin-lattice entanglement is enhanced by aperiodic jumps.

Abstract
We extend to the gamut of functional forms of the probability distribution of the time-dependent step-length a previous model dubbed Elephant Quantum Walk, which considers a uniform distribution and yields hyperballistic dynamics where the variance grows cubicly with time, σ2 ∝ t3, and a Gaussian for the position of the walker. We investigate this proposal both locally and globally with the results showing that the time-dependent interplay between interference, memory and long-range hopping leads to multiple transitions between dynamical regimes, namely ballistic → diffusive → superdiffusive → ballistic → hyperballistic for non-hermitian coin whereas the first diffusive regime is quelled for implementations using the Hadamard coin. In addition, we observe a robust asymptotic approach to maximal coin-space entanglement.

Abstract
In this work we study the opinion evolution in a community-based population with intergroup interactions. We address two issues. First, we consider that such intergroup interactions can be negative with some probability p. We develop a coupled mean-field approximation that still preserves the community structure and it is able to capture the richness of the results arising from our Monte Carlo simulations: continuous and discontinuous order-disorder transitions as well as nonmonotonic ordering for an intermediate community strength. In the second part, we consider only positive interactions but with the presence of inflexible agents holding a minority opinion. We also consider an indecision noise: a probability q that allows the spontaneous change of opinions to the neutral state. Our results show that the modular structure leads to a nonmonotonic global ordering as q increases. This inclination toward neutrality plays a dual role: A moderated propensity to neutrality helps the initial minority to become a majority, but this noise-driven opinion switching becomes less pronounced if the agents are too susceptible to become neutral.

Abstract
We introduce a minimal agent-based model to understand the effects of the interplay between dispersal and geometric constraints in metapopulation dynamics under the Allee Effect. The model, which does not impose nonlinear birth and death rates, is studied both analytically and numerically. Our results indicate the existence of a survival-extinction boundary with monotonic behavior for weak spatial constraints and a nonmonotonic behavior for strong spatial constraints so that there is an optimal dispersal that maximizes the survival probability. Such optimal dispersal has empirical support from recent experiments with engineered bacteria.

Abstract
Over recent years, a growing number of papillomaviruses have been identified, which cause a wide range of lesions in domestic and wild animals. Papillomavirus-induced lesions may have a great impact on animal health, and some diseases observed in farm animals are associated with significant economic losses. This concise review brings together recent advancements on animal papillomavirus research, providing the scientific community and veterinary practitioners with an update on this rapidly evolving field. Among others, bovine, canine and feline papillomaviruses (BPV, CPV and FcaPV) are most extensively discussed, in view of the recent discovery of new viral types and their worldwide importance for animal health. Feline papillomaviruses 2 is an emerging, highly prevalent pathogen in domestic cats, associated with a subset of malignant skin lesions. Aspects related to cross-species infection by BPV and its environmental co-factors are also addressed. Animal papillomaviruses are also fascinating models for studying molecular and cell biology and have recently inspired some major breakthroughs. Overall, it is clear that additional, international and systematic efforts are needed to clarify which lesions are caused by which viral types and to develop experimental models for studying animal papillomavirus.

Abstract
Several studies have demonstrated that wildlife reservoirs of mycobacteria are responsible for the maintenance and spreading of the infection to livestock and wildlife counterparts. Recent data report the role of wild boar (Sus scrofa) as a reservoir for Mycobacterium bovis. This study was conducted to evaluate the chronic inflammatory response in the mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) of wild boar with granulomatous lymphadenitis (n=30). Morphological parameters of the lesions were recorded. The expression of CD3 and CD79α molecules was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Molecular genotyping and culture to identify mycobacteria were performed. The lesions consisted mainly of stage III and stage IV granulomas. CD3 and CD79α positive cells were observed in 15 (50%) and in 11 (36.6%) MLN, respectively. In these lesions, higher percentages of T lymphocytes were found and a limited number of animals exhibited a tendency for an increased percentage of B lymphocytes. Our results suggest that there are similar percentages and distribution patterns of CD3 and CD79α in the lesions, regardless of the presence of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map), M. bovis or Map-M. bovis co-infection, and confirm that wild boar is both susceptible and could be an important Map and M. bovis wild reservoir in the study area.

Abstract
Human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 (c-erbB-2), an oncoprotein with potential prognostic marker and therapeutic use, is overexpressed in several human and animal tumours. But information regarding this molecule in feline tumours is scarce. This study aimed to assess the changes in the immunohistochemical expression of c-erbB-2 in feline endometrial adenocarcinomas (FEA) compared to normal endometrium. An immunohistochemistry assay using a specific antibody against c-erbB-2 was performed in FEA samples (n = 34) and in normal endometrium in the follicular (FS; n = 12) and luteal (LS; n = 11) stages. In FEA, the c-erbB-2 immunoexpression was assessed in neoplastic epithelial cells whilst in normal endometria it was individually evaluated in the surface and the superficial and deep glandular epithelia (SE, SGE and DGE, respectively). In FS and in LS, all the epithelia were positive for c-erbB-2; positivity was higher in the SE and the SGE than in DGE. Twenty of the 34 FEA samples (58.8%) were positive for c-erbB-2 immunolabelling. Nevertheless, its expression was higher in all the epithelia in the FS compared to FEA (p ≤ 0.0001) or the LS (p = 0.016). The results presented herein suggest that c-erbB-2 molecule is differently expressed in the feline endometrium through the oestrous cycle and though it may also be involved in feline endometrial carcinogenesis, a question remains unanswered on the importance of additional pathways of epithelial proliferation in the neoplastic changes in feline endometrium.

Abstract
The influence of two commercial probiotics on the growth, innate immune parameters and intestinal morphology of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) juveniles (initial weight: 16.4 ± 0.4 g) was evaluated. Two probiotic types: A, multi-species (Bacillus sp., Pedicoccus sp., Enterococcus sp., Lactobacillus sp.) and B, mono-species (Pediococcus acidilactici) were tested at two levels each (A1: 1.5 g kg(-1), 8.6 × 10(5) CFU g(-1); A2: 3 g kg(-1), 1.6 × 10(6) CFU g(-1); B1: 0.1 g kg(-1), 2.6 × 10(4) CFU g(-1); B2: 0.2 g kg(-1), 7.2 × 10(4) CFU g(-1)) versus an unsupplemented diet (C). Diets were distributed to sextuplicate tanks, three times a day to visual satiation for 8 weeks. Growth performance and immune responses (plasma lysozyme, ACH50, peroxidase and head kidney respiratory burst) were determined at 4 and 8 weeks of feeding. Body composition and intestine morphology were determined at the end of the feeding trial. At 8 weeks, the lower dose of multi-species probiotic (A1) improved growth rate, while both probiotic types improved feed conversion rate compared to the control animals, at the lower dose of multi-species (A1) and at the higher dose of mono-species (B2) probiotics. Body composition did not vary between treatments. At 4 weeks, ACH50 activity was significantly higher in fish fed higher dose of B probiotic (B2, 123.7 ± 50.6 vs 44.1 ± 7.7 U.ml(-1) in control). At 8 weeks, lysozyme activity was higher in fish fed A1 (13.1 ± 5.2 μg ml(-1)) diet compared to fish fed control diet (7.8 ± 1 μg ml(-1)). Plasma peroxidase and head-kidney respiratory burst did not differ among the dietary treatments. Villi length and integrity and goblet cell counting of a cross section of the anterior intestine were not significantly different between groups. Results suggest benefits in zootechnical performance and immune humoral responses using both probiotic types, in a dose dependent manner, without apparent alterations in intestinal morphology.

Abstract
CD10 is a multifunctional transmembrane neutral endopeptidase (NEP) that is considered to be a reliable marker of ectopic human endometrial stroma. Available information on NEP/CD10 protein expression in animal endometria is scarce. This study focused on the immunolocalization of NEP/CD10 in the canine uterus and on its temporal changes during the estrous cycle and early pregnancy (Days 11 to 23 post-LH surge) in healthy females. NEP/CD10 expression was found in the canine endometrial stroma in all stages of the estrous cycle, showing cyclic differences both in intensity and in distribution pattern. A small population of negative stromal cells in subsurface position was also observed. This population shared some morphological characteristics with the human predecidual cells, which became positive in progesterone-associated stages of the cycle. In addition, positive immunolabeling was also observed in canine myometrial stroma. In early pregnancy, the basal glandular epithelia and the syncytium cords remained negative to this marker contrasting with the trophoblast and the lacunar epithelium. A weak to moderate intensity of immunolabeling was observed in the decidual cells, whereas stromal immunolabeling was more intense at the delimitation of the syncytium cords. In conclusion, CD10 is consistently expressed in the canine endometrial stroma and myometrium but not in the endometrial epithelia. The characteristic pattern seen in early pregnancy also suggests a role for this molecule in the process of embryo invasion at implantation.

Abstract
Priapism, a persistent long-lasting involuntary erection of the penis, is uncommon in dogs. In this report, the case of a 13-year-old male Pointer, referred to our services due to persistent exposition of the penis, is described. This condition was consecutive to an intermittent priapism situation lasting for several days, which has been initially attributed to the inflammation and haematoma associated with a perianal bite. The owners became unable to retract the penis into the prepuce. At presentation, the dog was anorectic for 48 h, intolerant to manipulation, and showed poor body condition and unsteady locomotion. During physical evaluation, a marked engorgement of the local vessels in the prepuce and penis was found. An abdominal X-ray was asked under the suspicion of a neurogenic origin for the clinical situation, which showed evidences of spondylosis. After discussion of the clinical condition, the owners asked for euthanasia. The necropsy confirmed the engorgement of the regional vessels deriving from the pudendal arteries and blood accumulation within all the cavernous spaces, accompanied by congestion and thrombosis within the erectile structures of the penis. No significant changes were observed in the pelvic organs that could be at the origin of priapism. The lumbar-sacral spinal regions were carefully inspected and evidenced signs of L7-S1 stenosis due to spondylosis. The case presented herein is a rare situation of priapism of neurogenic origin in a dog. Necropsy findings suggest that it was consecutive to cauda equina compression due to lumbar spinal stenosis.

Abstract
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF), formerly known as Tumor necrosis factor alpha is now regarded as a natural component of the mammalian seminal plasma (SP). Although not completely clarified, its functions in the SP have been associated with paradoxal roles, such as sperm survival in the female genital tract, while at high levels negatively affect sperm survival and fertility potential. Recently, it has been discovered that canine inseminated spermatozoa display a strong immunoreaction for TNF when lining the female endometrium. As a continuation of this finding, the present work aimed at documenting TNF localization in the canine testes and epididymis and in freshly ejaculated spermatozoa (SPZ) through immunohisto- or cytochemistry. Immunoreaction for TNF was found in all samples used. In the dog testis, TNF immunoexpression was limited to the seminiferous tubules, where late round spermatids (SPD) showed weak intensity of immunostaining, while elongating and elongated SPD evidenced moderate and the residual bodies a strong intensity. In the epididymis, a gradual progressive increase of TNF immunolabelling was found throughout the epididymal regions, ranging from a weak intensity at the caput epididymis to a moderate intensity at the cauda. TNF immunolabelling was found in mature SPZ during the epididymal transit and also in freshly ejaculated SPZ, which showed a strong midpiece immunolabelling. Data presented here provide important information on expression of TNF in spermatozoa, which is acquired by the SPZ during their formation at the testis. It further provides the basis for subsequent studies on the physiological importance of cytokines in sperm function.

Abstract
Thirty six tissues from sheep, previously diagnosed with paratuberculosis, were tested by PCR in positive Ziehl-Neelsen staining smears of tissues, and PCR in tissues targeting IS900 specific for Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis. DNA amplification was achieved in 33.3% Ziehl-Neelsen smears, and in 61.1% tissue samples. Combination of both techniques found 66.7% samples as positive. Combination of techniques would, therefore, increase the sensitivity of diagnosis.

Abstract
The relative numbers of North-seeking and South-seeking polarity types in natural populations of magnetotactic bacteria were determined at sites on the coast of Brazil. These sites were South of the geomagnetic equator and had upward geomagnetic inclinations of 1-12 degrees . For upward inclinations >6 degrees , South-seeking cells predominated over North-seeking cells by more than a factor of 10. For upward inclinations <6 degrees , the fraction of North-seeking cells in the population increased with decreasing geomagnetic inclination, approaching 0.5 at the geomagnetic equator. We present a simple statistical model of a stochastic process that qualitatively accounts for the dynamics of the two polarity types in a magnetotactic bacterial population as a function of the geomagnetic field inclination.

Abstract
A 7-year-old intact male Boxer was referred to our services at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, suffering from a persistently erect penis (including the bulbus glandis) that had been exposed for several days. Radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations detected a 5.0 x 3.5 cm mass located dorso-laterally to the urinary bladder. The microbial culture of the mass revealed Staphylococcus spp. At that time, we suspected the involvement of an abscess in the origin of the priapism. Medical and surgical treatments were promptly instituted, which allowed for penile withdrawal into the prepuce; however, the resolution of the penile erection was not accomplished in the following days and penile amputation was required. Histological evaluation of the excised penis revealed extensive infarction of the erectile tissue of the pars longa and bulbus glandis, and also of the blood vessels of the penis. Following penile amputation and antimicrobial therapy, the animal fully recovered. Ultimately, the animal died as a consequence of gastric torsion. At necropsy, some lesions compatible with a previous perforation of the intestinal wall were recorded. The data gathered from the anamnesis, the physical and imaging examinations, along with the post-mortem findings, allowed us to conclude that in this clinical case the primary cause of priapism was a perineal abscess due to bowel perforation.

Abstract
p63, a recently identified homologue of the p53 protein, is expressed consistently in basal cells of several human multilayered epithelia. In this study, expression of p63 was determined in 31 primary cutaneous glandular carcinomas, including sebaceous, perianal (hepatoid) gland, apocrine and ceruminous carcinomas, as well as their adjacent normal skin. Similar to humans, p63 is a reliable marker for basal and myoepithelial cells in canine epidermis, cutaneous appendages and malignant apocrine and ceruminous gland neoplasms. In sebaceous carcinomas, not only basal cells, but also some sebocytes, showed nuclear staining for p63. Most mature epithelial cells in perianal gland carcinomas exhibited strong p63 expression. Based on these findings, basal/myoepithelial cells could be involved in the oncogenesis of these tumours and p63 might be used as a diagnostic marker in these lesions.

Abstract
A case of disrupted embryonic development of the genital tract in a newborn Holstein calf is described. The physical examination of the calf evidenced several abnormalities, like atresia ani, rudimentary external genitalia and caudal vertebral agenesis. On necropsy, the excised genitalia consisted of bilateral streak gonads, apparently normal uterine tubes, a fluid-filled uterus, a long vagina and a very narrow clitoris-like structure covered with a discrete skin-fold. The urinary tract seemed normal and the urethra's opening was at the vestibule-vaginal junction. A cytogenetic analysis was requested. Karyotype revealed the existence of Y chromosome material in the two X chromosomes. However, the search for the sex-determining region Y (SRY) showed that this was an apparently absent gene. The histological examination of the gonads revealed the existence of ovarian dysplasia. Uterine sections evidenced the absence of the uterine epithelium, with only sporadic caruncles. Under microscopic examination, the uterine tubes and vagina structure was normal. The external genitalia sections revealed the existence of a skin-fold covering an erectile structure surrounding the urethra, a structure more similar to a penis than to a clitoris. This is an unusual situation of gonadal dysplasia combined with genital tract anomalies in cattle, probably associated to a genetic defect.

Abstract
Winter atmospheric measurements of gaseous lower carbonyl and carboxylic acids were carried out simultaneously (in 1999) at two distinct urban sites located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The greater metropolitan area of São Paulo is the largest industrialized region of Latin America and has a highly polluted atmosphere. It has an unconventional mix of vehicle types in that a variety of gasoline blends, including oxygenated ones, are used. Mixing ratios of formic and acetic acids ranged, respectively, from 0.6 to 19.4 and from 0.1 to 10.6 ppbv in one of the sites studied and from 1.4 to 18.4 and from 0.4 to 6.7 ppbv in the other site. High values of formic to acetic ratios were found, especially in the latter site (average = 4.3), suggesting that photochemical production was the predominant source of the formic and acetic acid during the afternoon. Differing from the acids, levels of carbonyls were similar at both sites. Higher average mixing ratios of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde were found in the morning (18.9 and 17.2 ppbv) and gradually decreased from midday (9.5 and 11.8 ppbv) to evening (7.2 and 10.2 ppbv). In the morning, vehicular direct emission seemed to be the main primary source of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, whereas at midday and evening these compounds appeared to be mainly formed by photochemistry. Secondary photochemical production of organic acids and aldehydes (rather than primary emissions from vehicles) was shown to be more important in São Paulo's atmosphere from midday to evening, particularly on days with strong solar radiation.

Abstract
Magnetite, the main component of converter slag in the steel industry, can be used for the adsorption of Ni(II) from aqueous solutions, over a range of conditions: initial metal concentration (10-100 mg 1(-1)), stirring times (2-240 min), adsorbent dosage (1 g for 0.5 1 of metal solution) and temperatures (20, 30 and 38 degrees C). The adsorption rate increased with initial concentration but decreased with increase in temperature, due to competition of the dissolution process. The adsorption process obeyed the Freundlich isotherm model.

Abstract
MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective study (1994-1996) of 282 cases of intraepithelial lesions treated in the Gynecology Services of Coimbra University Hospitals and subsequent follow-up (9-45 months). The following parameters were evaluated as recurrence factors: the patient's age, lesion degree, associated HPV infection, treatment type, safety margin in the ablative treatments and interval free of illness. RESULTS Of the 282 cases, 72.4% (N = 204) corresponded to HSIL and 27.6% (N = 78) to LSIL. The patients' mean was 36.3 +/- 9.1 [19-67] years. The most commonly used treatment types were the LLETZ (large loop excision of the transformation zone) (76.9%) followed by CO2 LASER vaporization (16%) and finally cold-knife conization (7.1%). The safety margins were determined in 184 cases and, on average, were of 3.2 +/- 2.4 [1-10] mm. Forty-four recurrences occurred (15.6%) of which 75% corresponded to HSIL lesions (N = 33) and 25% (N = 11) to LSIL. From the total number of recurrences the association to HPV infection was found in 24 of the cases (54.5%) and 75% of these (N = 19) corresponded to HSIL. The average age in the recurrence group was 38.2 +/- 8.7 [21-53] years and 35.9 +/- 9.2 [19-67] years in the group without recurrences (p > 0.05). In the LSIL group treated with CO2 LASER (N = 32) the recurrence rate was 15.6% versus 13.3% in the group treated with LLETZ (N = 45). In the HSIL that were treated with CO2 LASER vaporization (N = 13) the recurrence rate was 23%; in those treated with LLETZ (N = 172) there were 16.2% recurrences and in the group submitted to cold-knife conization (N = 19) that rate was 10.5%. CONCLUSIONS The total rate of recurrence was 15.6% with the greatest incidence of lesions associated to HPV (p > 0.05). Regarding the particular case of the HSIL, a great number of recurrences with the destructive treatments (CO2 LASER) was observed when compared to the ablative treatments (cold-knife conization or LLETZ).

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinomas of the cervix uteri are very rare. They are poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas with intense stromal lymphocytic infiltration. These histologic features are similar to nasopharyngeal lymphoepithelioma and may have a better prognosis than other tumors of the cervix. A lymphoepithelioma-like lesion of the cervix uteri is described in a 33-year-old Caucasian woman who had an episode of vaginal bleeding. A review of the literature about these types of tumor is also presented.

Abstract
The antigenic components of excretory-secretory products (ESP) of adult worms of Fasciola hepatica were revealed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blot analysis using sera from 20 patients infected with F. hepatica. Sera from 184 other parasitic infections and 20 healthy volunteers were also analyzed. It was found that the ESP were composed of more than 11 polypeptides; five components detected in fascioliasis sera had molecular weights of 12.4, 16.4, 19.4, 25, and 27 kilodaltons (kD). Only the 25- and 27-kD components were recognized by all 20 fascioliasis sera. Using the ESP as antigen, it was possible to perform an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with a sensitivity of 95% and a specificity of 97%. Sera from other parasitic infections had antibodies to antigenic components with apparent molecular weights of 37, 38.4, 52, 63, 73, 87, 109, and 116 kD that were also found in sera from fascioliasis patients. These findings suggested that the 25- and 27-kD antigenic components may be sensitive and specific for the diagnosis of human fascioliasis.

Abstract
This study emerged in the face of the need to consolidate the information from the clinical HIV+ and AIDS cases recorded at the Ambulatório Regional de Especialidades de São Carlos (Special Clinic). Its aim is to identify the population according to sex, age group, marital status, level of education, occupation and the variables related to the epidemic means of exposure, laboratory tests and disease status-as well as to provide the health service with information. The data from 204 patients, 147 males and 57 females were analysed; most people were between 20 and 30 year of age and single. For females, the predominant mean of exposure was heterosexual sex, and for males blood transmission (intravenous drug use) predominated. With this analysis it will be possible to follow the development of the epidemic in the region and to propose preventive measures, which are considered to be only option for control of the disease at present.
