Abstract
A growing literature in philosophy of science focuses on the role of aesthetics in scientific practice, with the experiment recently recognized for its aesthetic value. However, the literature on aesthetics in experimentation grows out of case studies from the history of science, leaving open the question as to how contemporary scientists experience aesthetics in their experimental work. In this paper we offer the first qualitative, empirical analysis of aesthetic experiences regarding experimental practice, drawing from in-depth interviews with 215 scientists in four countries. We identify six categories of aesthetic experience we find in experimentation, their function, and new questions emerging from our study.

Abstract
This study provides the first immunogenetic preliminary evidence that specific human leucocyte antigen (HLA) class I and class II alleles and haplotypes may be relevant for BRCA1 c.5263_5264insC driven oncogenesis. Observed HLA associations might have practical implications for establishment of predictive markers for the response to immunotherapies in malignancies driven by this germ-line mutation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is the major pathological subtype of laryngeal cancer. It has been shown that alterations of the expression of non-classical human leukocyte antigens (HLA) and the chain-related MIC molecules by malignant cells can lead to escape from the immune system control and certain allele variants may participate in immune editing and therefore be associated with modulation of cancer risk. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of non-classical HLA class Ib and chain-related MIC polymorphisms, determined at the allelic level by next-generation sequencing (NGS), in patients from the Bulgarian population, diagnosed with LSCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS In the present study DNA samples from 48 patients with LSCC were used. Data was compared to 63 healthy controls analysed in previous studies. HLA genotyping was performed by using the AlloSeq Tx17 early pooling protocol and the library preparation AlloSeq Tx17 kit (CareDx). Sequencing was performed on MiniSeq sequencing platform (Illumina) and HLA genotypes were assigned with the AlloSeq Assign analysis software v1.0.3 (CareDx) and the IPD-IMGT/HLA database 3.45.1.2. RESULTS The HLA disease association tests revealed a statistically significant predisposing association of HLA-F*01:01:02 (Pc = 0.0103, OR = 24.0194) with LSCC, while HLA-F*01:01:01 (Pc = 8.21e-04, OR = 0.0485) has a possible protective association. Additionally we observed several haplotypes with statistically significant protective and predisposing associations. The strongest association was observed for F*01:01:01-H*01:01:01 (P = 0.0054, haplotype score=-2.7801). CONCLUSION Our preliminary study suggests the involvement of HLA class Ib in cancer development and the possible role of the shown alleles as biomarkers of LSCC.

Abstract
Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune bullous dermatosis with uneven geographic distribution and higher incidence in certain populations. In previous studies, a relatively high incidence of PV was reported in Bulgaria (0.47/100,000/year) comparable to that in other countries. The genetic background was considered responsible for the disease susceptibility, and multiple reports have proven PV to be an HLA-associated condition. The aim of our study was to analyze the role of genetic factors in the development of PV in Bulgaria. HLA genotyping was performed in 56 PV patients, ethnic Bulgarians whose diagnosis was confirmed based on clinical, histological, and immunofluorescent findings. The control group consisted of 204 healthy individuals from the Bulgarian population without evidence for HLA-associated autoimmune diseases. HLA-A,-B,-DRB1,-DQB1 analysis was performed by PCR-SSP. Our results revealed predisposing associations with DRB1*14, DRB1*04:02, and B*38, B*55, while allele DRB1*03:01 and the corresponding haplotypes were significantly decreased in the PV patients. The predisposing role of these alleles has been observed in other populations. All reported predisposing DRB1 alleles have the same amino acids at key positions of the beta chain of the HLA molecules, 26 (Phe), 67 (Leu or Ileu), 70 and 71 (hydrophobic AA: Gln, Arg, Asp, or Glu), and 86 (Val), which is important for the selective presentation of desmoglein 3 peptides. Additionally, specific alleles HLA-A*01 and DRB1*11 were identified with decreased frequencies in the patients’ group, the last one being a common protective allele for autoimmune diseases in the Bulgarian population. The elucidation of the role of genetic factors for the development of pemphigus will help explain its higher incidence and clinical variability in certain populations.

Abstract
The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study® is a 10-year longitudinal study of children recruited at ages 9 and 10. A battery of neuroimaging tasks are administered biennially to track neurodevelopment and identify individual differences in brain function. This study reports activation patterns from functional MRI (fMRI) tasks completed at baseline, which were designed to measure cognitive impulse control with a stop signal task (SST; N = 5,547), reward anticipation and receipt with a monetary incentive delay (MID) task (N = 6,657) and working memory and emotion reactivity with an emotional N-back (EN-back) task (N = 6,009). Further, we report the spatial reproducibility of activation patterns by assessing between-group vertex/voxelwise correlations of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) activation. Analyses reveal robust brain activations that are consistent with the published literature, vary across fMRI tasks/contrasts and slightly correlate with individual behavioral performance on the tasks. These results establish the preadolescent brain function baseline, guide interpretation of cross-sectional analyses and will enable the investigation of longitudinal changes during adolescent development.

Introduction
In the acute period of myocardial infarction (MI) inflammatory disorders of blood are registered, but data of prognostic significance of these disorders is multiple-valued.
Purpose
Research of manifestation of the inflammatory response in patients who suffered MI, and estimation of its prognostic significance.
Materials and methods
772 patients with myocardial infarction were examined. Prospective follow-up from 1 to 7 years was performed.
Results
The death rate during all years of follow-up was 14,2 % of all included in the study. 61% of patients died suddenly, but 26% of them died as a consequence of the progression of chronic cardiac insufficiency. In patients died suddenly lower level of lymphocytes in the first 24 hours: 1,30 ± 0,47 * 109/l vs 1,80 ± 0,73*109/l, (p = 0,03) was registered. In patients who died due to heart failure progression, authentically registered higher leukocytosis in the first 24 hours, in comparison to survived ones, reached 13,83 ± 6,00*109/l (vs 11,9 ± 3,12*109/l; p = 0,005), but to 5th day in the compared groups leukocytes levels had practically the same values (7,36 ± 1,89*109/l vs 7,47 ± 1,99*109/l; accordingly p = 0,8). In the compared groups the number of lymphocytes, expressing CD 95 did not differ authentically, but in died abruptly patients this index was rather lower.
There were not authentic differences detected among groups of dead and survived patients, in terms of interleukins 1β,2, and 6, whereas TNF-α was almost twice as high in patients who died due to CHF progression. Studying inflammatory markers were not included in the number of independent indexes, connected with the risk of death when conducting multivariate regressive Cox-analysis.
Conclusion
In our opinion, inflammatory factors were displaced from the prognostic model for assessing the risk of death, both sudden and due to heart progression, by more powerful structural-functional predictors.

Abstract
Kashkaval is a hard cheese produced in Eastern Europe and consumed after ripening. The influence of ripening temperature (9±1°C, 11±1°C and 13±1°C) of cow's milk Kashkaval cheese on its physicochemical, microbiological and sensory characteristics was studied. For the ripening period no statistically significant differences (P>0.05) in the indicators dry matter, fat content, salt and protein were found. A slight decrease in active acidity was observed during the maturation process which tendency was more pronounced in the experimental samples ripened at higher temperatures (13.0±1.0°C). It was found that lowering the ripening temperature of Kashkaval cheese was accompanied by a prolongation of the lag phase in the development of lactic acid microflora. A significantly higher amount of lactic acid microorganisms (P<0.05) in cheese samples matured at 13±1° C was established. The chosen temperature regime of maturation did not affect the number of psychrotrophic microorganisms (P>0.05). The absence of unwanted side microflora in fresh cheese was established, which was an important prerequisite for the normal course of the maturing processes and the formation of a characteristic sensory profile of the cheese. Kashkaval cheese ripened at 13±1°C for 45 days was characterized by the highest overall sensory score comparable to Kashkaval cheese ripened at 9±1°C and 11±1°C for 60 days. The obtained results demonstrated that the higher ripening regime could be successfully used to reduce production costs without changing the specific physicochemical, microbiological and sensory characteristics of Kashkaval cheese from cow milk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is a malignancy characterized by an aggressive tumor growth and significant mortality. Clarifying mechanisms responsible for immunomodulation are among the main challenges for the development of personalized approaches for the management of patients with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma. The aim of the present study was to analyze the relevance of MICA and MICB to Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma pathogenesis focusing on allele polymorphisms and the levels of soluble MICA and MICB molecules. MATERIALS AND METHODS 73 patients diagnosed with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma and 149 healthy controls from the Bulgarian population were included in the study. MICA and MICB polymorphism was analyzed at high-resolution level using Next-Generation Sequencing. Serum levels of soluble MICA and MICB molecules were measured by ELISA. RESULTS Our results show significant protective association with MICB*002:01, while relatively rare alleles MICB*018, *019, and *020 were observed with statistically significant increased frequency in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma patients compared to controls. Additionally, a predisposing association was observed for MICA*008:01-MICB*019 haplotype. A correlation analysis between functionally relevant MICA polymorphisms and sMICA showed that homozygosity for MICA-A5.1 or 129Val in OSCC patients was associated with significantly higher serum levels of sMICA. CONCLUSION This is the first study showing significant associations between MICB alleles and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma and suggesting the possible role of MICB in immunosurveillance in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma development. Observed correlations between the levels of soluble MICA molecules and functionally relevant polymorphisms might represent a further step toward a better understanding of molecular mechanisms of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma and developing strategies for therapeutic targeting harnessing effective immunosurveillance.

Abstract
Early diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in dogs using imaging methods has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. That allows accurate differentiation of BPH from other diseases, as well as timely prophylaxis and treatment. The aim of the research was to make a comparative analysis of BPH diagnosis by ultrasound, X-ray and computed tomography (CT) and computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) of ejaculates from sexually mature male dogs. Two hundred and fifty patients of different breeds, 80 of whom with previous clinical history and BPH-related complaints at 3 to 7 years of age, were followed. The results of echographic studies of dogs with clinical signs of BPH showed structural prostate changes. Focal inflammation, small or larger intra- or paraprostatic cysts (7%), neoplasia (3%), acute or chronic prostatitis (15%) and prostate abscesses (3%) were detected. The remaining 72% of patients demonstrated evidence of hypo -to hyper heterogenic parenchyma with moderate heterogeneity, which are characteristic of BPH. X-ray findings about prostate volume showed that 85% of the patients studied had an increase in prostate volume, enlarged soft tissue shadow in the caudal abdomen or cranially to the pelvis but caudally to the bladder. These data were found out in 13% more patients than those with ultrasound data for BHP. In this study, computed tomography demonstrated structural changes and precise prostate size in all 10 patients with suspected BPH. The CASA results showed that the percentage of static sperm was significantly higher in dogs with BPH than in healthy dogs. At the same time, there was a decline in the percentage of cells with progressive movement at a rapid and medium rate of movement in patients with BPH compared to those data in healthy dogs. These changes could have a negative effect on the fertilising potential of the sperm. The obtained results suggested that the application of CT and CASA for early diagnosis of BPH in dog breeders from rare and valuable breeds is advisable and useful for timely prevention and treatment of the disease.

Abstract
In this study the individual profiles of seminal plasma proteins (SPP) in rams of three breeds – Merino, Pleven Blackhead and Ile de France - were analysed. The study was carried out with three rams at 3, 6 and 10 years of age, grown and fed under similar conditions. Eighteen ejaculates (6 ejaculates from each ram) were evaluated by Sperm Class Analyzer. The total SPP concentration was measured spectrophotometrically. The separation and characterisation of SPP was performed by HPLC and one dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). There were no significant differences between the characteristics of ejaculates and the main kinematic parameters of the sperm in the breeds studied. Chromatograms showed specific profiles with 9, 10 and 11 protein peaks for Merino, Pleven Blackhead and Ile de France breeds, respectively. The total SPP concentration was the highest in the Pleven Blackhead breed and the lowest in Ile de France breed. The major parts of SPP in the three breeds were identical. The seminal plasma of Merino breed contained proteins with molecular mass of 30.3 kDa, 15.7 kDa and 15.2 kDa that were not present in the other two breeds. In the Ile de France and Pleven Blackhead samples only, two proteins with molecular masses of 39.7 kDa and 21.1 kDa, were observed. In conclusion, the detection of specific proteins can be used as a biological marker for sheep breed identification.

Abstract
The implementation of the immune checkpoint blockade as a therapeutic option in contemporary oncology is one of the significant immunological achievements in the last century. Constantly accumulating evidence suggests that the response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) is not universal. Therefore, it is critical to identify determinants for response, resistance and adverse effects of immune checkpoint therapy that could be developed as prognostic and predictive markers. Recent large scale analyses of cancer genome data revealed the key role of HLA class I and class II molecules in cancer immunoediting, and it appears that HLA diversity can predict response to ICIs. In the present review, we summarize the emerging data on the role of HLA germline variations as a marker for response to ICIs.

Abstract
Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD) is one of the major complications of allogeneic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). cGvHD is an autoimmune-like disorder affecting multiple organs and involves a dermatological rash, tissue inflammation and fibrosis. The incidence of cGvHD has been reported to be as high as 30% to 60% and there are currently no reliable tools for predicting the occurrence of cGvHD. There is therefore an important unmet clinical need for predictive biomarkers. The present review summarizes the state of the art for genetic variation as a predictive biomarker for cGvHD. We discuss three different modes of action for genetic variation in transplantation: genetic associations, genetic matching, and pharmacogenetics. The results indicate that currently, there are no genetic polymorphisms or genetic tools that can be reliably used as validated biomarkers for predicting cGvHD. A number of recommendations for future studies can be drawn. The majority of studies to date have been under-powered and included too few patients and genetic markers. Like in all complex multifactorial diseases, large collaborative genome-level studies are now needed to achieve reliable and unbiased results. Some of the candidate genes, in particular, CTLA4, HSPE, IL1R1, CCR6, FGFR1OP, and IL10, and some non-HLA variants in the HLA gene region have been replicated to be associated with cGvHD risk in independent studies. These associations should now be confirmed in large well-characterized cohorts with fine mapping. Some patients develop cGvHD despite very extensive immunosuppression and other treatments, indicating that the current therapeutic regimens may not always be effective enough. Hence, more studies on pharmacogenetics are also required. Moreover, all of these studies should be adjusted for diagnostic and clinical features of cGvHD. We conclude that future studies should focus on modern genome-level tools, such as machine learning, polygenic risk scores and genome-wide association study-transcription meta-analyses, instead of focusing on just single variants. The risk of cGvHD may be related to the summary level of immunogenetic differences, or whole genome histocompatibility between each donor-recipient pair. As the number of genome-wide analyses in HSCT is increasing, we are approaching an era where there will be sufficient data to incorporate these approaches in the near future.

Abstract
In the present study, a comparative analysis was undertaken on the possibilities of using
olive oil in fresh spreadable cheese either emulsified or encapsulated. The changes in
titratable acidity, active acidity and total Lactococcus count were recorded continuously
throughout the storage period. At the end of the storage period, Lactococcus count in the
samples with encapsulated oil were found to be slightly higher (7.7 and 7.8 log CFU.g-1
respectively) in comparison with the control sample (7.5 log CFU.g-1
). A significantly
higher content (P < 0.05) of unsaturated fatty acids (56.88 g per 100 g fatty acids) and a
lower peroxide value of extracted fat (0.35 meqO2.kg-1
) were found in the fresh spreadable
cheese samples with 4% (w/w) encapsulated olive oil and extract of dill used as
antioxidant in an amount of 0.003% (v/v). The addition of antioxidant (dill extract) further
reduced oxidation process and enhanced cheese functionality. The sensory profile of the
fresh cheeses, containing encapsulated oil, was better compared to the sensory profile of
the products prepared with directly added olive oil (with or without added antioxidant).

Abstract
We provide evidence for a linear correlation between the frequency of clonal haematopoiesis and COVID‐19 mortality rate. We discuss the mechanistic explanations for this association mediated by a pathological inflammatory response. Our hypothesis can be tested in COVID‐19‐infected patients and eventually lead to new approaches to risk stratification and therapy.

Abstract
The importance of control for nosocomial and community-acquired infections is one of the priorities of practical surgery, and maxillofacial surgery is no exception in this matter. Aim of study - to determine the spectrum of antimicrobial activity of widespread antiseptics and antibacterial agents used for topical treatment of odontogenic phlegmons of the maxillofacial region. A bacteriological study of purulent wound exudate was carried out for 109 patients of the maxillofacial hospital department with a diagnosis of odontogenic phlegmons. Using the method of "draw-wells" the sensitivity of the isolated bacterial cultures to solutions of decamethoxin, dioxidine, formaldehyde, and sanguiritrin was determined. Using the dilution method microbicide concentrations of decamethoxin and miramistin were determined by influencing the clinical and museum strains of pathogenic bacteria. In purulent exudate the monocultures of staphylococci were determined - 79 (40.1%), and streptococci - 86 (43.65%), aerobic non-fermenting bacteria - 11 (5.60%) and enterobacteria - 21 (10,65%) were found much less often. Isolated from S. aureus and E. coli proved to be sensitive to solutions of decamethoxin, formaldehyde and sanguiritrin; isolated strains of P. aeruginosa - only to decamethoxin and formaldehyde. Microbicide concentrations of decamethoxin were 4-35 times lower than miramistin due to effect on clinical and museum strains of bacteria. Efficiency of decamethoxin was higher.

Abstract
The 'Immunogenetics of Aging' project is a component introduced in the 14th International HLA and Immunogenetics Workshop (IHIW) and developed further within subsequent workshops. The aim was to determine the relevance of immunogenetic markers, focusing on HLA, cytokine genes, and some innate immunity genes, for successful aging and an increased capacity to reach the extreme limits of life-span. Within the 17th IHIW we applied Next Generation Sequencing methods to refine further HLA associations at allele level in longevity, and to extend our knowledge to additional loci such as HLA-DQA1, HLA-DPB1 and HLA-DPA1. Analysis of relatively small number of healthy elderly and young controls from four populations showed that some HLA class I and class II alleles were significantly positively associated with healthy aging. Additionally we observed statistically significant differences in HLA allele distribution when the analysis was performed separately in elderly females and males compared to sex-matched young controls. Haplotypes, probably associated with better control of viral and malignant diseases were increased in the elderly sample. These preliminary NGS data could confirm our hypotheses that survival and longevity might be associated with selection of HLA alleles and haplotypes conferring disease resistance or susceptibility. Therefore HLA alleles and haplotypes could be informative immunogenetic markers for successful ageing.

Abstract
The 17th International HLA and Immunogenetics Workshop (IHIW) organizers conducted a Pilot Study (PS) in which 13 laboratories (15 groups) participated to assess the performance of the various sequencing library preparation protocols, NGS platforms and software in use prior to the workshop. The organizers sent 50 cell lines to each of the 15 groups, scored the 15 independently generated sets of NGS HLA genotyping data, and generated "consensus" HLA genotypes for each of the 50 cell lines. Proficiency Testing (PT) was subsequently organized using four sets of 24 cell lines, selected from 48 of 50 PS cell lines, to validate the quality of NGS HLA typing data from the 34 participating IHIW laboratories. Completion of the PT program with a minimum score of 95% concordance at the HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 loci satisfied the requirements to submit NGS HLA typing data for the 17th IHIW projects. Together, these PS and PT efforts constituted the 17th IHIW Quality Control project. Overall PT concordance rates for HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, HLA-DPA1, HLA-DPB1, HLA-DQA1, HLA-DQB1, HLA-DRB1, HLA-DRB3, HLA-DRB4 and HLA-DRB5 were 98.1%, 97.0% and 98.1%, 99.0%, 98.6%, 98.8%, 97.6%, 96.0%, 99.1%, 90.0% and 91.7%, respectively. Across all loci, the majority of the discordance was due to allele dropout. The high cost of NGS HLA genotyping per experiment likely prevented the retyping of initially failed HLA loci. Despite the high HLA genotype concordance rates of the software, there remains room for improvement in the assembly of more accurate consensus DNA sequences by NGS HLA genotyping software.

Abstract
Chromaffin cells of adrenal medulla have traditionally been considered as modified sympathetic neurons. However, the results of recent studies indicate the need to revise this concept. The article reviews recent findings in origin and ontogeny of adrenal chromaffin cells and transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulation of developmental processes. The article summarizes data on transcriptional control of chromaffin cells proliferation and maturation and participation of microRNA in regulation of chromaffin and sympathetic neuronal phenotype gene expression.

Abstract
In addition to accumulation and metabolism of triglycerides, white adipose tissue is recognized as the active endocrine organ, whose dysfunction is associated with the development of a wide range of diseases. The secretome of adipocytes is represented by a wide range of adipokines, which vary in depot and sex-specific manner. In addition, adipokines have diverse biological effects, correlations with different metabolic features and functions. In this review, the data on biological effects, origin and the clinical significance of adipokines are discussed. The influence of adipokines on metabolism, sensitivity to insulin, vascular homeostasis, angiogenesis, repair, inflammation and immune cells are shown. Visceral adipose tissue accumulation is accompanied with adipocytes hypertrophy and overproduction of such proinflammatory and proaterogenic molecules like resistin, visfatin, vaspin, tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 6, lipocalin, glypican 4, RBP4 etc. There is a tight correlation between these adipokines level and development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiometabolic complications and cancer. Thus, adipokines represent a group of informative biomarkers for the diagnostics of metabolic disorders and the prediction of the outcome of the wide range of diseases. The study of the effects and mechanisms of the action of adipokines is the basis for determining new targets for therapy.

Abstract
Somatic mutations in JAK2, MPL and CALR are recurrently identified in most of the cases with Philadelphia chromosome negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). We applied four molecular genetic methods for identification of CALR exon 9 mutations, including high resolution melt (HRM) analysis, Sanger sequencing, semiconductor target genes sequencing and whole exome sequencing. A total of 78 patients with myeloid malignancies were included in the study. We identified 14 CALR exon 9 mutated cases out of 78 studied patients with myeloid malignancies. All mutated patients were diagnosed with MPN being either PMF (n = 7) or ET (n = 7). Nine cases had type 1 mutations and 5 cases had type 2 mutations. CALR exon 9, MPL exon 10 and JAK2 p. V617F were mutually exclusive. There were no statistically significant differences in the hematological parameters between the cases with CALR and JAK2 or MPL mutations. Notably, all four techniques were fully concordant in the detection of CALR mutations. This is one of the few reports on the CALR mutations frequency in South-eastern populations. Our study shows that the frequency and patterns of these mutations is identical to those in the patients' cohorts from Western countries. Besides we demonstrated the utility of four different methods for their detection.

Abstract
Food irradiation technologies are used to reduce the risk of food borne diseases by eliminating pathogenic microorganisms, prolonging shelf life and reducing storage losses by delaying ripening, germination or sprouting. However, application of irradiation in food technology can negatively influence the biologically active compounds in foods. In this research, the effect of gamma-irradiation on the antioxidant activity of Bulgarian teas was investigated. The aim of the study was to evaluate the total phenolic and tannin content and antioxidant activity of ethanolic extracts of Bulgarian herbal teas before and after gamma-irradiation. Mursalski tea ( Sideritis scardica), Mashterka tea ( Thymus serpyllum), Good Night tea (tea mix), Staroplaninski tea (Balkan tea mix), Trakia tea (tea mix), and Mountain tea (Planinski tea mix) were selected for this study. Gamma-irradiation was applied at the absorbed dose of 5 kGy. Antioxidant activity of non-irradiated and irradiated teas was determined by measuring antiradical activity against DPPH• and ABTS•+ and the ability to reduce ferrous ions. The highest total phenolic content was found in Mursalski tea (268 mg/g), and the highest tannin content in Good Night tea (168 mg/g). FRAP, TEAC and DPPH assays revealed that the most active samples were Staroplaninski (2.78 mmol Fe (II)/g), Planinski (0.87 mmol Trolox/g) and Planinski (0.032 mg/mL), respectively. The radical scavenging activity of irradiated tea samples was maintained after gamma-irradiation. The most interesting extract from irradiated tea studied was Staroplaninski, which demonstrated a higher antioxidant potential in the irradiated sample compared with the non-irradiated sample.

Abstract
Many studies have described the role of killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) and their cognate human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I ligands in the immune protection against melanoma, but the effect of these markers on intra-individual variations in tumor development and progression has remained less clear. We performed KIR, HLA, and KIR/ligand analysis in 283 patients with malignant melanoma in order to evaluate their integrated influence on disease stage and progression. The patients were grouped according to AJCC staging, histological type of the primary tumor, progression, and survival rate. Analysis of HLA class I alleles revealed positive association of HLA-C*14 (Pc = 0.026, OR = 5.99) and negative association of HLA-C*02 (Pc = 0.026, OR = 0.43) with the disease. Decreased frequency of KIR2DS5 was observed in patients with rapid progression, as compared to those with slow progression. KIR BB genotype was prevalent in patients with metastasis (p = 0.004, OR = 0.025). KIR AA genotype was nearly twice as frequent in rapidly progressive cases, but without statistical relevance (p = 0.055, OR = 2.6). Significantly increased frequency of KIR2DL2 in the presence of C1 ligand (strong inhibition) was found in patients with AJCC III and IV, as compared to individuals with AJCC I stage (p = 0.045, OR = 1.93). In summary, our data imply that KIR/ligand gene content in patients could modulate the disease course towards unfavorable tumor behavior.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In the last decade the identification of germline mutations in several genes such as EPOR, VHL, EGLN1, and EPAS1, helped the definition of several different subtypes of familial (congenital) erythrocytosis. Being rare disorders these entities often remain unrecognized or misdiagnosed, which necessitates the extensive reporting of newly identified cases. METHODS We applied a genetic approach including whole exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing for the identification of the causative germline mutation in a Bulgarian family with congential erythrocytosis. RESULTS We identified EPAS1 (HIF2A) p. M535T heterozygous mutation carried by four members of the family over three generations. We provide also an extensive description of the clinical features of the affected family members. DISCUSSION EPAS1 p.M535T appears to be found in different populations as a causative variation in familial erythrocytosis. Our findings support the notion that the affected patients present with variable clinical features and disease course. Furthermore, close clinical follow-up with phlebotomies on demand and regular intake of low doses of anticoagulants seem to prevent from serious complications such as thrombembolic events and pulmonary hypertension. CONCLUSION This is the first description of an entire family with EPAS1 p. M535T mutation expanding our knowledge about the clinical features of the disease.

Abstract
This paper examines whether, and in what contexts, Duhem's and Poincaré's views can be regarded as conventionalist or structural realist. After analysing the three different contexts in which conventionalism is attributed to them-in the context of the aim of science, the underdetermination problem and the epistemological status of certain principles-I show that neither Duhem's nor Poincaré's arguments can be regarded as conventionalist. I argue that Duhem and Poincaré offer different solutions to the problem of theory choice, differ in their stances towards scientific knowledge and the status of scientific principles, making their epistemological claims substantially different.

Abstract
The requirements for quality control (QC) in diagnostic radiology were introduced in Bulgarian legislation in 2005. Hospital medical physicists and several private medical physics groups provide QC services to radiology departments. The aim of this study was to analyse data from QC tests in mammography and to investigate the impact of QC introduction on mammography practice in the country. The study was coordinated by the National Centre of Radiobiology and Radiation Protection. All medical physics services were requested to fill in standardised forms with information about most important parameters routinely measured during QC. All QC service providers responded. Results demonstrated significant improvement of practice since the introduction of QC, with reduction of established deviations from 65 % during the first year to 7 % in the last year. The systems that do not meet the acceptability criteria were suspended from use. Performance of automatic exposure control and digital detectors are not regularly tested because of the absence of requirements in the legislation. The need of updated guidance and training of medical physicists to reflect the change in technology was demonstrated.

Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles of Campylobacter spp. Isolated from Broiler Chicken Meat of Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian Origin at Estonian Retail Level and from Patients with Severe Enteric Infections in Estonia. Abstract
The resistance patterns of Campylobacter spp. isolated from retail broiler chicken meat originating either from Estonia, Lithuania or Latvia collected in Estonia were determined. Additionally, in collaboration with the laboratories of several Estonian hospitals, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns were determined for Campylobacter isolates from patients with severe Campylobacter enteric infections. The isolates were identified at the species level by the PCR method. Respectively, 88.8% of the isolates were C. jejuni, and 11.2% were C. coli. In total, 126 Campylobacter isolates of broiler chicken meat and human origin were tested for minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) with the broth microdilution VetMIC(TH) method (National Veterinary Institute; Uppsala, Sweden) for a total of six antimicrobials. Resistance to one or more antimicrobials was detected in 62 (63.3%) of Campylobacter broiler chicken meat isolates and in 20 (71.4%) of human-origin isolates. Large proportions of the broiler chicken meat isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin (60.2%). Multidrug resistance (i.e. to three or more unrelated antimicrobials) was detected in five (5.1%) C. jejuni isolates. Among the human isolates, 20 (71.4%) were resistant to fluoroquinolones, and two (7.1%) C. jejuni isolates exhibited multidrug resistance. The chicken meat isolates of Estonian origin were the most susceptible. However, a high proportion of fluoroquinolone-resistant C. jejuni isolates were found in Latvian and Lithuanian products. The results of this study indicate that the problems caused by the inappropriate use of antimicrobials extend beyond the country in which a food originates; therefore, both domestic and international interventions and agreements are required to implement common policies on antimicrobial usage and to minimize the emergence of Campylobacter drug resistance.

Abstract
The popularity, availability and sizes of point cloud data sets are increasing, thus raising interesting data management and processing challenges. Various software solutions are available for the management of point cloud data. A benchmark for point cloud data management systems was defined and it was executed for several solutions. In this paper we focus on the solutions based on the column-store MonetDB, the generic out-of-the-box approach is compared with two alternative approaches that exploit the spatial coherence of the data to improve the data access and to minimize the storage requirements.
