Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Enzyme-mediated grafting of poly (gallic acid) (PGAL) and L-arginine and a-L-lysine onto PGAL produces reactive oxygen species (ROS)-suppressor multiradical molecules with low cytotoxicity, high thermostability and water solubility with cancer treatment potential. This study examined the anticancer effects of these molecules in hepatic (HepG2, ATCC HB-8065), breast (MCF7, ATCC HTB-22), and prostate (PC-3, ATCC CRL-1435 and DU 145, ATCC HTB-81) cancer cell lines, as well as in fibroblasts from healthy human skin as control cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS PGAL was synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of the naturally abundant GA using laccase from Trametes versicolor. Insertions of amino acids L-arginine and α-L-lysine on the PGAL chain were carried out by microwave. The cells of dermal fibroblast (Fb) were obtained from primary skin cultures and isolated from skin biopsies. The cancer cells lines of hepatic (HepG2), breast (MCF7), and prostate (PC-3, DU 145) were obtained from ATCC. The viability of the cancer cells and the primary culture was obtained by the MTT assay. Proliferation was demonstrated by crystal violet assay. Cell migration was determined by Wound healing assay. Finally, cell cycle analysis was carried out with cells. RESULTS The results show that 200 μg/ml of PGAL cultured in vitro with prostate cancer cells decreased viability, proliferation, and migration, as well as arrested cells in the G1 and S phases of the cell cycle. In contrast, the dermal fibroblasts and the hepatic line remained unaffected. The random grafting of L-Arg and a-L-Lys onto the PGAL chain also decreased the viability of prostate cancer cells. CONCLUSION PGAL and PGAL-grafted amino acids are potential adjuvants for prostate cancer treatment, with improved physicochemical characteristics compared to GA.

Abstract
A 2-year-old Standardbred gelding was referred for a mass on the palmaromedial right front pastern which was accompanied by progressively worsening lameness. The mass was firm to palpation and covered by normal skin. Ultrasonographically, a smooth encapsulated mass was present, medial to the flexor tendons and palmar to the neurovascular bundle. Because of a poor prognosis for future athletic performance without surgical or chemotherapeutic intervention and economic constraints preventing further diagnostics and treatment, the horse was euthanised. Post-mortem magnetic resonance imaging, histopathology and immunohistochemistry revealed the mass to be a perivascular wall tumour, the first record of such a neoplasia in the horse.

Abstract
Polygallic acid (PGAL) has been used in vitro to protect synoviocytes from monosodium urate (MSU) crystals due to its anti-inflammatory properties. However, MSU crystals can also activate other cells of the synovial fluid (SF). We studied the impact of PGAL on the phagocytosis of MSU crystals, inflammation, and oxidative stress using an in vitro model with SF leukocytes and THP-1 monocyte cells. SF leukocytes were stimulated with PGAL and MSU crystals, proinflammatory cytokines and phagocytosis were assessed. In THP-1 cells, the effect of PGAL on the phagocytosis of MSU crystals and the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) was evaluated. PGAL was added to THP-1 cultures 24 h before MSU crystal addition as a pre-treatment, and IL-1β was measured. One-way ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc test was performed, and a P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. PGAL (100 µg/mL) decreased phagocytosis in SF leukocytes by 14% compared to cells exposed to crystals without PGAL. In THP-1 cells, 100 and 200 µg/mL PGAL reduced phagocytosis by 17% and 15%, respectively. In SF cells, there was a tendency to decrease IL-1β and IL-6. In THP-1 cells, decreases in IL-1β and TNF-α, as well as a slight decrease in ROS, were identified. PGAL pre-treatment resulted in a reduction of IL-1β. PGAL inhibits MSU phagocytosis by exerting an anti-inflammatory effect on cells exposed to crystals. The use of PGAL before an acute attack of gout suggests an important protective factor to control the inflammation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The Spanish Incisional Hernia Surgery Registry (EVEREG) was promoted by the Abdominal Wall Section of the Spanish Association of Surgeons, starting data collection in July 2012 and currently has more than 14,000 cases. The objective of this study was to validate the data collected through a pilot audit process. METHODS A sample of hospitals participating in the EVEREG registry since the beginning was selected. Patients registered in these centers in the 2012-2020 period were included. A stratified random sampling was carried out, with the inclusion of 10% of registered cases per center with a minimum of 20 cases per center. At each participating center, two researchers not belonging to the center undergoing the audit checked (on site or telematically) the concordance between the data in the registry and the data contained in the case history of each patient. RESULTS 330 patients have been analyzed, out of a total of 2673 registered, in 9 participating centers. The average accuracy has been 95.7%. Incorrect data 1.5% and missing data 2.3% CONCLUSION: The group of pilot hospitals from this EVERG incisional hernia surgery registry shows a very high precision of 95.7%. The confirmation of these findings in all the centers participating in the registry will make it possible to guarantee the quality of the studies made and their comparability with other similar national registries. Abstract
Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD) are characterized by enhanced skin inflammation, which results in hyperproliferation and the recruitment of immune cells into the skin. For that reason, it is needed a chemical capable to reduce cell proliferation and the recruitment of cells. The search for new molecules for therapeutic skin treatment mainly focuses on the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, highlighting the rheological properties of polymeric polypeptides. We studied L-arginine (L-Arg) grafted (-g-) to enzymatic poly(gallic acid) (PGAL). The latter is a multiradical antioxidant with greater properties and thermal stability. The derivative was enzymatically polymerized in an innocuous procedure. The poly(gallic acid)-g-L-Arg molecule (PGAL-g-L-Arg) inhibits bacterial strains which also have been involved in the progression of psoriasis and AD. However, it is important to analyze their biological effect on skin cells. The cell viability was analyzed by calcein/ethidium homodimer assays and crystal violet. The proliferation and cell attachment were determined by a curve of time and quantitation of the optical density of crystal violet. To analyze the cell migration a wound-healing assay was performed. This synthesis demonstrates that it is not cytotoxic at high concentrations (250 μg/mL). We observed a decrease in the proliferation, migration, and adhesion of dermal fibroblasts in vitro but the compound could not avoid the increase of reactive oxygen species in the cell. Based on our findings, PGAL-g-L-Arg is a promising candidate for treating skin diseases such as psoriasis and AD where decreasing the proliferation and cell migration could help to avoid inflammation.

Abstract
Currently, the requirements for adsorbent materials are based on their environmentally friendly production and biodegradability. However, they are also related to the design of materials to sustain many cycles in pursuit of low cost and profitable devices for water treatments. In this regard, a chitosan reinforced with poly-ε-caprolactone thermoplastic composite was prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy; Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, mechanical properties, as well as erosion and swelling assays. The isotherm and kinetic data were fitted with Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. The adsorption equilibrium capacities at pH 6 of Zn(II), Cu(II), Fe(II), and Al(III) were 165.59 ± 3.41 mg/g, 3.91 ± 0.02 mg/g, 10.72 ± 0.11 mg/g, and 1.99 ± 0.22 mg/g, respectively. The adsorbent material lost approximately 6% of the initial mass in the adsorption-desorption processes.

The objective of this study is to validate the data collected through a pilot audit process
Material & Methods
A sample of hospitals participating in the EVEREG registry since 2012 is selected. Patients registered in these centers in the period 2012–2019 are included. A stratified random sampling is carried out, with the inclusion of 10% of registered cases per center with a minimum of 20.
In the 2020–2021 period, a selection of researchers, different from that of the center to be audited, checks the concordance between the registry data and the data collected in the patient's clinical history, either in person or online.
Results
330 patients have been analyzed, out of a total of 2673 registered, in 9 participating centers. The average accuracy has been 95.7% (99.1–79.35%). With 1.5% incorrect data and 2.28% missing data
Conclusions
This is the first validity study of an abdominal wall registry
The accuracy greater than 95% obtained allows us to determine an excellent quality in the data collection of the EVEREG registry. We believe that the confirmation of these data in all the centers participating in the registry would guarantee the quality of the studies carried out and their comparison with other international registries

Abstract
The α-l-Lysine (LL) grafting onto the enzymatic poly(gallic acid) (PGAL) produces a helicoidal brush-like antimicrobial polymer containing outer positive-charged moieties. Best results are found with ca. 16 mol% α-LL-grafting for the inhibition of gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative Escherichia coli strains. Membrane permeability, confocal and scanning electron microscopy studies suggest a pore-formation and translocation mechanisms by initial electrostatic interaction of positive charged polymer at the negatively charged bacterial membranes. The attained polymer displays high concentration of hemolysis (Hc) in erythrocytes, and no lymphocyte mitochondrial activity. Interestingly, PGAL-LL is not cytotoxic on human dermal fibroblast. The antioxidant activity after the LL hybridization is also demonstrated by DPPH, ORAC, FRAP and hydroxyl radical scavenging, which enhances the preservation of human cells in addition to antimicrobial for this polymer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the number of nationwide clinical registries in upper gastrointestinal cancer is increasing, few of them perform regular clinical audits. The Spanish EURECCA Esophagogastric Cancer Registry (SEEGCR) was launched in 2013. The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of the data in terms of completeness and accuracy. METHODS Patients who were registered (2014-2017) in the online SEEGCR and underwent esophagectomy or gastrectomy with curative intent were selected for auditing. Independent teams of surgeons visited each center between July 2018 and December 2019 and checked the reliability of data entered into the registry. Completeness was established by comparing the cases reported in the registry with those provided by the Medical Documentation Service of each center. Twenty percent of randomly selected cases per hospital were checked during on-site visits for testing the accuracy of data (27 items per patient file). Correlation between the quality of the data and the hospital volume was also assessed. RESULTS Some 1839 patients from 19 centers were included in the registry. The mean completeness rate in the whole series was 97.8% (range 82.8-100%). For the accuracy, 462 (25.1%) cases were checked. Out of 12,312 items, 10,905 were available for verification, resulting in a perfect agreement of 95% (87.1-98.7%). There were 509 (4.7%) incorrect and 35 (0.3%) missing entries. No correlation between hospital volume and the rate of completeness and accuracy was observed. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that the SEEGCR contains reliable data.

Abstract
Background:Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of chronic pain and disability, and its prevalence is expected to increase worldwide (1) being the knee the most affected joint, especially in older adults. Intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) could be of particular benefit in OA patients with co-morbidities, and in case of inadequate response to other pharmacological treatments (2). HA has been generally administered in cycles of 3-5 injections, however, due to the pressure on public health systems, the trend is to reduce the number of injections maintaining the duration of effects as longer as possible.Objectives:To assess the effectiveness and safety of a new formulation of HA, up to one year after one single injection to patients in the SOYA (Symptomatic Osteoarthritis one Year Assessment) study.Methods:Patients with Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade 2-3 and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) pain >=40-<80mm were prospectively included to receive a single injection of MPS-HA2%. At 6m a second injection could be offered to selected patients. Primary outcome was reduction of VAS pain in the target knee. VAS for joint pain and WOMAC were recorded at 6 and 12m; Minimally Clinical Important Improvement MCII (>=20% relative change for VAS pain) and patient and investigator assessments (PGA, IGA) (Likert scale 0-4 points) were also estimated. Adverse events were recorded for safety assessment.Results:One hundred and one patients (mean age 68 years, 74% female and 78% with overweight) were included. Mean pain at baseline in the target knee was 63.57mm and 57% were grade 3 KL with a mean evolution of 7.5 years. Table 1 shows the improvement in VAS and WOMAC scores at 6 and 12 months in the mITT population. As for the IGA mean score was 2.29 at baseline, 1.06 at 6m and 1.48 at 12m (Wilcoxon, p-value <0.05).Fourteen patients received a second injection at 6m and 50% of them achieved at 12m a significant and clinically relevant improvement compared to baseline, above the 20% established for the MCII.In total, 12 adverse events (8 patients) were reported, all of them local, non-serious, and of mild-moderate intensity.Conclusion:Viscosupplementation with a single intra-articular injection of MPS-HA2% has proven to be effective and well tolerated up to 12 months after treatment. The re-infiltration of the joint in appropriate cases has proven to be effective in a significant number of patients. Abstract
Enzymatic mediated poly (gallic acid) (PGAL), a stable multiradical polyanion with helicoidal secondary structure and high antioxidant capacity, was successfully grafted to poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) using UV-photo induction. PCL films were prepared with several levels of roughness and subsequently grafted with PGAL (PCL-g-PGAL). The results on the full characterization of the produced materials by mechanical tests, surface morphology, and topography, thermal and crystallographic analyses, as well as wettability and cell protection activity against oxidative stress, were adequate for tissue regeneration. The in vitro biocompatibility was then assessed with epithelial-like cells showing excellent adhesion and proliferation onto the PCL-g-PGAL films, most importantly, PCL-g-PGAL displayed a good ability to protect cell cultures on their surface against reactive oxygen species. These biomaterials can consequently be considered as novel biocompatible and antioxidant films with high-responsiveness for biomedical or tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Cytokines like IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β are important mediators of inflammation in many inflammatory diseases, as well as in cellular processes like cell proliferation and cell adhesion. Finding new molecules that decrease cell proliferation, adhesion (inflammatory infiltrate), and pro-inflammatory cytokine release could help in the treatment of many inflammatory diseases. The naturally derived poly(gallic acid) (PGAL), produced enzymatically from gallic acid in aqueous medium, is a non-toxic, thermostable multiradical polyanion that is antioxidant and has potential biomedical uses. Experimental evidence has demonstrated that PGAL reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are the target of some inflammatory diseases. PGAL decreased IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β production in human monocytes exposed to PMA without affecting cell viability. Additionally, PGAL reduced cell proliferation by affecting the transition from the S phase to the G2 phase of the cell cycle. Cell adhesion experiments showed that PMA-induced cell adhesion was diminished with the presence of PGAL, particularly at a concentration of 200 μg/mL. These properties of PGAL show a potential use for treating inflammatory diseases, such as psoriasis or arthritis.

Abstract
This work demonstrates that a biodegradable chitosan-based biocomposite packed in mini-reactors successfully removes copper ions from aqueous solutions. The chitosan is obtained by deacetylation of biological chitin, which is extracted from shrimp wastes by lactic acid fermentation. The polysaccharide is embedded in a biodegradable prepolymer matrix before extrusion to produce porous cylindrical pellets of 2 × 80 mm. The highest copper ion removal is 62.5 mg Cu2+ per g of the biodegradable adsorbent. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of the material, below its saturation, allows several cycles of reuse with a hydraulic retention time reduction of 1 h. This chitosan-based material is advantageous when compared with other approaches using non-biodegradable materials or costly commercial adsorbents for removing heavy metal ions in wastewater effluents as well as a filter component in water purification devices.

Abstract
The bioconversion process of bioactive naringenin by whole-cells of Yarrowia lipolytica 2.2ab for the production of increased value-added compounds is successfully achieved in surface and liquid cultures. This approach is an alternative to the commercial production of these bioactive compounds from vegetable sources, which are limited due to their low concentrations and the complexity of the purification processes. The experimentation rendered seven value-added compounds in both surface and liquid bioconversion cultures. Some of the compounds produced have not been previously reported as products from the bioconversion processes, such as the case of ampelopsin. Biosynthetic pathways were suggested for the naringenin bioconversion using whole-cells of Y. lipolytica 2.2ab. Finally, the extracts obtained from the naringenin bioconversion in liquid cultures showed higher percentage of inhibition of DPPH· and ABTS· radicals up to 32.88 and 2.08 times, respectively, compared to commercial naringenin.

Abstract
A nanocomposite based on an antibiotic-loaded hydrogel into a nano-electrospun fibre with antimicrobial and antioxidant capacities is investigated. The material is composed of nanofibres of enzymatic PCL grafted with poly(gallic acid) (PGAL), a recently developed enzyme-mediated hydrophilic polymer that features a multiradical and polyanionic nature in a helicoidal secondary structure. An extensive experimental–theoretical study on the molecular structure and morphological characterizations for this nanocomposite are discussed. The hydrogel network is formed by sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) loaded with the broad-spectrum antibiotic clindamycin. This nano electrospun biomaterial inhibits a strain of Staphylococcus aureus, which is the main cause of nosocomial infections. The SPTT assay demonstrates that PGAL side chains also improve the release rates for this bactericide owing to the crosslinking to the CMC hydrogel matrix. The absence of hemolytic activity and the viability of epithelial cells demonstrates that this nanocomposite has no cytotoxicity. The schematic representation of the hydrogel/nanofiber shows the gaps among electrospun-fibers filled with flowing precursor solution of the hydrogel.![]()

Abstract
In the present work, cell lines of different origin were exposed to BPA levels from food intake reported elsewhere. Specifically, we used an in vitro assay to determine cytotoxicity of BPA in three cell lines: MCF7 (breast cancer), PC3 (prostate cancer) and 3T3-L1 (mouse fibroblast). Cytotoxic effects were observed at concentrations higher than 50 μg/mL which is above the involuntary exposure level of BPA described before in fresh, canned and frozen foods and beverages. Furthermore, medial inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 85.17 μg/mL and 88.48 μg/mL were observed for PC3 and 3T3-L1, respectively, and a slightly lower IC50 of 64.67 μg/mL for MCF7. These results highlight BPA's toxicity potential at current levels from food intake. The cell line-dependent divergent response to BPA reported herein is discussed.

Abstract
Chemoenzymatic polypeptide synthesis offers several advantages over chemical or other biological routes, however, the use of aqueous-based media suffers from reverse hydrolysis reactions that challenge peptide chain propagation. Herein, the protease from subtilisin Carlsberg biocatalyzed the synthesis of poly-l-PheOEt, poly-l-LeuOEt, and the copolymers poly-l-PheOEt-co-l-LeuOEt from their amino acid ethyl ester substrates in a neat liquid 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane solvent. The products, achieved in acceptable yields (ca. 50%), were fully characterized showing relatively high molar mass (ca. 20 000 Da for poly-l-PheOEt). This non-toxic low-boiling hydrofluorocarbon enhances enzymatic peptide propagation by limiting hydrolysis owing to its hydrophobic and relatively polar characteristics that sustain the protease activity and solubilize substrates and products. Computational molecular dynamic calculations were used to assess the l-PheOEt/l-LeuOEt-solvent and polypeptide-solvent interactions in this system. Additionally, the homopolypeptides displayed higher crystallinity than the copolypeptides with random incorporation of amino acid ethyl esters, notwithstanding the significantly highest specificity for Phe in this system. Interestingly, secondary structure characterization of the products by FTIR and circular dichroism suggests a non-common peptide folding.

Abstract
Acinetobacter species are identified as producing surface-active and emulsifying molecules known as bioemulsifiers. Production, characterization and stability of bioemulsifiers produced by Acinetobacter bouvetii UAM25 were studied. A. bouvetii UAM25 grew in three different carbon and energy sources: ethanol, a glycerol-hexadecane mixture and waste cooking oil in an airlift bioreactor, showing that bioemulsifier production was growth associated. The three purified bioemulsifiers were lipo-heteropolysaccharides of high molecular weight (4866 ± 533 and 462 ± 101 kDa). The best carbon source and energy for bioemulsifier production was wasted cooking oil, with a highest emulsifying capacity (76.2 ± 3.5 EU mg-1) as compared with ethanol (46.6 ± 7.1 EU mg-1) and the glycerol-hexadecane mixture (49.5 ± 4.2 EU mg-1). The three bioemulsifiers in our study displayed similar macromolecular structures, regardless of the nature (hydrophobic or hydrophilic) of the carbon and energy source. Bioemulsifiers did not decrease surface tension, but the emulsifying capacity of all of them was retained under extreme variation in salinity (0-50 g NaCl L-1), pH (3-10) and temperature (25-121 °C), indicative of remarkable stability. These findings contribute to understanding of the relationship between: production, physical properties, chemical composition and stability of bioemulsifiers for their potential applications in biotechnology, such as bioremediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and water.

Abstract
The poly(gallic acid), produced by laccase-mediated oxidation of gallic acid in aqueous media (pH5.5) to attain a novel material with well-defined molecular structure and high water solubility (500mg/mL at 25°C), has been investigated to understand its potential biological activities. In this regard, a biomedical approach based on cytoprotective effect on human fibroblast cells exposed to UV-irradiation in the presence of the polymer has been demonstrated. The results also shows that 200μg/mL of poly(gallic acid) inhibits the growth and migration of dermal fibroblasts and cancer cell lines without affecting cell viability. Poly(gallic acid) pretreatment with 10μg/mL protects dermal fibroblasts from UV induced cell death and additionally, the cytoprotective effect reduce ROS presence in the cells. This property can be correlated with the antioxidant power (IC50 of 23.5μg/mL) of this novel material, which was ascertained by electronic paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and spectrophotometrically. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of this material was corroborated with the inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212) strains (MIC=400mg/mL) common bacteria found in hospitals.

Abstract
Chitosan scaffolds of different deacetylation degrees, average molecular weights and concentrations reinforced with silica nanoparticles were prepared for bone tissue regeneration. The resulting nanocomposites showed similar pore sizes (<300 μm) regardless the deacetylation degree and concentration used in their formulation. Their mechanical compression resistance was increased by a 30% with the addition of silica nanoparticles as nanofillers. The biocompatibility of the three-dimensional chitosan scaffolds was confirmed by the Alamar Blue assay in human primary osteoblasts as well as the formation of cell spheroids indicative of their great potential for bone regeneration. In vivo implantation of the scaffolds in a mice calvaria defect model provided substantial evidences of the suitability of these nanocomposites for bone tissue engineering showing a mature and dense collagenous tissue with small foci of mineralization, vascularized areas and the infiltration of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Nevertheless, mature bone tissue formation was not observed after eight weeks of implantation.

Abstract
The objective of this work was to comparatively study the tissue tropism and the associated pathology of 2 autochthonous small ruminant lentivirus (SRLV) field strains using an experimental infection in sheep through the bone marrow. Fifteen male, SRLV-free lambs of the Rasa Aragonesa breed were inoculated with strain 697 (nervous tissue origin, animals A1-A6), with strain 496 (articular origin, animals B1-B6), or with uninfected culture medium (C1-C3). Clinical, serologic, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) evaluations were performed periodically. Two lambs from each infected group and a control animal were euthanized at 134, 273, and 319 days postinfection. Tissues were analyzed by gross and histopathologic evaluation; immunohistochemistry for CD3, CD4, CD8, CD68, and FoxP3 cell markers; lung morphometric evaluation; and tissue proviral quantification by PCR. All infected animals became positive either by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and/or PCR, with group B lambs showing the highest serologic values and more consistently positive PCR reactions. Group A lambs showed representative lung lesions but only mild histopathologic changes in the central nervous system (CNS) or in carpal joints. Contrarily, group B lambs demonstrated intense carpal arthritis and interstitial pneumonia but an absence of lesions in the CNS. Proviral copies in tissues were detected only in group B lambs. Experimental infection with these SRLV strains indicates that strain 496 is more virulent than strain 697 and more prone to induce arthritis, whereas strain 697 is more likely to reproduce encephalitis in Rasa Aragonesa lambs. Host factors as well as viral factors are responsible for the final clinicopathologic picture during SRLV infections.

Abstract
The hydrolysis of chitin treated under supercritical conditions was successfully carried out using chitinases obtained by an optimized fermentation of the fungus Lecanicillium lecanii. The biopolymer was subjected to a pretreatment based on suspension in supercritical 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (scR134a), which possesses a critical temperature and pressure of 101°C and 40bar, respectively, followed by rapid depressurization to atmospheric pressure and further fibrillation. This methodology was compared to control untreated chitins and chitin subjected to steam explosion showing improved production of reducing sugars (0.18mg/mL), enzymatic hydrolysis and high acetylation (FA of 0.45) in products with degrees of polymerization between 2 and 5.

Abstract
A chitosan from biologically obtained chitin was successfully grafted with d,l-lactic acid (LA) in aqueous media using p-toluenesulfonic acid as catalyst to obtain a non-toxic, biodegradable packaging material that was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, water vapor permeability, and relative humidity (RH) losses. Additionally, the grafting in chitosan with LA produced films with improved mechanical properties. This material successfully extended the shelf life of fresh cheese and inhibited the growth of Listeria monocytogenes during 14 days at 4 °C and 22% RH, whereby inoculated samples with chitosan-g-LA packaging presented full bacterial inhibition. The results were compared to control samples and commercial low-density polyethylene packaging.

Abstract
In this study, chitin oligosaccharides have been successfully produced using chitinases from submerged fermentation of Lecanicillium lecanii. The highest Hex, Chit and Prot production was 0.14, 0.26 and 2.05 U/mg of protein, respectively, which were attained varying pH from 5 to 8 after 96 h. Culture conditions conducted at constant pH of 6 resulted in significantly lower enzyme production. The crude enzyme was partially purified by salting out with (NH4)2SO4 followed by size exclusion chromatography to isolate the chitinase mixture for further chitin hydrolysis assays. In this regard, chitin substrates were pretreated with sonication and steam explosion prior to enzymatic reaction. Structural changes were observed with steam explosion with 11.28% reduction of the crystallinity index attained with the lowest chitin/water ratio (0.1g/mL). Pretreated chitins reached the highest production of reducing sugars (0.37 mg/mL) and GlcNAc (0.59 mg/mL) in 23.6% yield.

Abstract
In this review, we hypothesized the importance of the interaction between the brain glutathione (GSH) system, the proteolytic tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA)/plasminogen/ plasmin system, regulated by plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1), and neuroserpin in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. The histopathological characteristic hallmark that gives personality to the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease is the accumulation of neurofibroid tangles located intracellularly in the brain, such as the protein tau and extracellular senile plaques made primarily of amyloidal substance. These formations of complex etiology are intimately related to GSH, brain protective antioxidants, and the proteolytic system, in which t-PA plays a key role. There is scientific evidence that suggests a relationship between aging, a number of neurodegenerative disorders, and the excessive production of reactive oxygen species and accompanying decreased brain proteolysis. The plasminogen system in the brain is an essential proteolytic mechanism that effectively degrades amyloid peptides (“beta-amyloidolysis”) through action of the plasmin, and this physiologic process may be considered to be a means of prevention of neurodegenerative disorders. In parallel to the decrease in GSH levels seen in aging, there is also a decrease in plasmin brain activity and a progressive decrease of t-PA activity, caused by a decrease in the expression of the t-PA together with an increase of the PAI-1 levels, which rise to an increment in the production of amyloid peptides and a lesser clearance of them. Better knowledge of the GSH mechanism and cerebral proteolysis will allow us to hypothesize about therapeutic practices.

Abstract
In order to better understand how immunization against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) can be improved using commercial vaccines, different strategies of immunization were applied in the field using an inactivated vaccine (INV), a modified live vaccine (MLV) or a combination of the two and the responses compared. In experiment 1 (E1), 21 piglets were distributed in three groups. Group A was vaccinated with a commercial INV at 2.5, 3.5 and 6.5 months old; group B pigs received the INV at 1.5, 2.5, 5.5 and 6.5 months old, while pigs in group C were kept as unvaccinated controls. At 7.5 months of age all pigs were challenged with PRRSV and followed for 21 days. In experiment 2 (E2), 32 piglets were distributed evenly in four groups. Groups A, B and C were vaccinated with a commercial MLV at 1.5 months old, while group D pigs were kept as controls. At 4.5 months old, groups A and C received the INV while B received a second MLV, 1 month later group C pigs received a third INV. At 6.5 months old all pigs were challenged as in E1. In both experiments, total antibodies, neutralizing antibodies (NA) and cell-mediated immunity (CMI) were evaluated, and viraemia was determined after challenge. In E1, immunization with an INV induced high interferon-γ responses after the second and subsequent vaccinations. Development of NA after challenge was faster in INV vaccinated pigs compared to unvaccinated controls. In E2, re-vaccination with INV induced NA responses similar to re-vaccination with MLV; however, a significant increase in NA titres after challenge was only detected in group C pigs. The use of combined protocols (MLV+INV) was superior to the use of MLV alone in inducing cell mediated immunity. In conclusion, the highest immune responses against PRRSV after a single shot were achieved with MLV; after that, INV re-vaccination should be considered as the best strategy to induce significant boosters.
