Bioadsorption, bioaccumulation and biodegradation of antibiotics by algae and their association with algal physiological state and antibiotic physicochemical properties. Abstract
Bioadsorption, bioaccumulation and biodegradation processes in algae, play an important role in the biomagnification of antibiotics, or other organic pollutants, in aquatic food chains. In this study, the bioadsorption, bioaccumulation and biodegradation of norfloxacin [NFX], sulfamethazine [SMZ] and roxithromycin [RTM]) is investigated using a series of culture experiments. Chlorella vulgaris was exposed to these antibiotics with incubation periods of 24, 72, 120 and 168 h. Results show the bioadsorption concentration of antibiotics in extracellular matter increases with increasing alkaline phosphatase activity (AKP/ALP). The bioaccumulation concentrations of NFX, SMZ and RTM within cells significantly increase after early exposure, and subsequently decrease. There is a significant positive antibiotics correlation to superoxide dismutase (SOD), the photosynthetic electron transport rate (ETR) and maximum fluorescence after dark adaptation (Fv/Fm), while showing a negative correlation to malondialdehyde (MDA). The biodegradation percentages (Pb) of NFX, SMZ and RTM range from 39.3 - 97.2, 41.3 - 90.5, and 9.3 - 99.9, respectively, and significantly increase with increasing Fv/Fm, density and chlorophyll-a. The accumulation of antibiotics in extracellular and intracellular substances of C. vulgaris is affected by antibiotic biodegradation processes associated with cell physiological state. The results succinctly explain relationships between algal growth during antibiotics exposure and the bioadsorption and bioaccumulation of these antibiotics in cell walls and cell matter. The findings draw an insightful understanding of the accumulation of antibiotics in algae and provide a scientific basis for the better utilization of algae treatment technology in antibiotic contaminated wastewaters. Under low dose exposures, the biomagnification of antibiotics in algae is affected by bioadsorption, bioaccumulation and biodegradation.

Abstract
We have recently shown that IFNγ, produced during cancer therapy, induces expression of the Bcl3 proto-oncogene in ovarian cancer (OC) cells, resulting in their increased proliferation, migration, and invasion, but the mechanisms are unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the IFNγ-induced Bcl3 expression is dependent on JAK1 and STAT1 signaling, and on p65 NFκB. Furthermore, the IFNγ-induced Bcl3 expression is associated with an increased occupancy of Ser-727 phosphorylated STAT1 and acetylated histone H3 at the Bcl3 promoter. Our data indicate that Bcl3 promotes expression of the pro-inflammatory chemokine interleukin-8 (IL-8) in OC cells. These findings identify Bcl3 as a novel target of IFNγ/JAK1/STAT1 signaling and suggest that targeting the JAK1/STAT1 pathway may suppress IFNγ-induced Bcl3 expression in ovarian cancer.

Abstract
LaIr3Ga2 is a kagome superconductor with a superconducting temperature (Tc) of 5.16 K. Here, we present the physical properties of the LaIr3Ga2 kagome superconductor computed via the DFT method wherein six different exchange-correlation functionals were used. The lattice parameters obtained using different functionals are reasonable, with a slight variation compared to experimental values. The bonding nature was explored. The elastic constants (Cij), moduli (B, G, Y), and Vickers hardness (Hv) were computed to disclose the mechanical behavior. The Hv values were estimated to be 2.56-3.16 GPa using various exchange-correlation functionals, indicating the softness of the kagome material. The Pugh ratio, Poisson's ratio, and Cauchy pressure revealed the ductile nature. In addition, mechanical stability was ensured based on the estimated elastic constants. The anisotropic mechanical behavior was confirmed via different anisotropic indices. The Debye temperature (ΘD), melting temperature (Tm), and minimum thermal conductivity (kmin) were calculated to characterize the thermal properties and predict the potential of LaIr3Ga2 as a thermal barrier coating material. The electronic density of states was investigated in detail. The McMillan equation was used to estimate Tc, and the electron-phonon coupling constant (λ) was calculated to explore the superconducting nature. The important optical constants were also calculated to explore its possible optoelectronic applications. The values of reflectivity in the IR-visible region are about 62% to 80%, indicating that the compound under study is suitable as a coating to reduce solar heating. The obtained parameters were compared with previously reported parameters, where available.

Abstract
Expression of the immune checkpoint programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) is increased in ovarian cancer (OC) and correlates with poor prognosis. Interferon-γ (IFNγ) induces PD-L1 expression in OC cells, resulting in their increased proliferation and tumor growth, but the mechanisms that regulate the PD-L1 expression in OC remain unclear. Here, we show that the IFNγ-induced PD-L1 expression in OC cells is associated with increased levels of STAT1, Tyr-701 pSTAT1 and Ser-727 pSTAT1. Suppression of JAK1 and STAT1 significantly decreases the IFNγ-induced PD-L1 expression in OC cells, and STAT1 overexpression increases the IFNγ-induced PD-L1 expression. In addition, IFNγ induces expression of the transcription factor interferon regulatory factor 1 (IRF1) and IRF1 suppression attenuates the IFNγ-induced gene and protein levels of PD-L1. Chromatin immunoprecipitation results show that IFNγ induces PD-L1 promoter acetylation and recruitment of STAT1, Ser-727 pSTAT1 and IRF1 in OC cells. Together, these findings demonstrate that the IFNγ-induced PD-L1 expression in OC cells is regulated by JAK1, STAT1, and IRF1 signaling, and suggest that targeting the JAK1/ STAT1/IRF1 pathway may provide a leverage to regulate the PD-L1 levels in ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Interferon-γ (IFNγ) is a pleiotropic cytokine that has a crucial role in immune response and tumor immunity. Because of its anti-tumor effects, IFNγ has been used in cancer treatment. However, IFNγ also has tumor-promoting functions that are less well understood. Here, we show that IFNγ induces expression of the pro-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic chemokine interleukin-8 (IL-8, CXCL8) in ovarian cancer (OC) cells. The IFNγ-induced IL-8 expression is dependent on JAK1, STAT1, and p65 NFκB, and is associated with an increased occupancy of K314/315 acetylated p65 NFκB and Ser-727 phosphorylated STAT1 at the IL-8 promoter. Neutralization of IL-8 using anti-IL-8 antibody reduces IFNγ-induced migration of OC cells, and their invasion ability in 3D spheroids. Together, these findings identify IL-8 as a novel target induced by IFNγ/JAK1/STAT1/p65 NFκB signaling, and indicate that the IFNγ-induced IL-8 contributes to IFNγ pro-tumorigenic effects in ovarian cancer cells.

Abstract
Climate change-induced salinity intrusion into agricultural soils is known to negatively impact crop production and food security. However, the effects of salinity increase on plant-herbivore-natural enemy systems and repercussions for pest suppression services are largely unknown. Here, we examine the effects of increased salinity on communities of rice (Oryza sativa), brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, and green mirid bug (GMB), Cyrtorhinus lividipennis, under greenhouse conditions. We found that elevated salinity significantly suppressed the growth of two rice cultivars. Meanwhile, BPH population size also generally decreased due to poor host plant quality induced by elevated salinity. The highest BPH density occurred at 2.0 dS/m salinity and declined thereafter with increasing salinity, irrespective of rice cultivar. The highest population density of GMB also occurred under control conditions and decreased significantly with increasing salinity. Higher salinity directly affected the rice crop by reducing plant quality measured with reference to biomass production and plant height, whereas inducing population developmental asynchrony between BPH and GMB observed at 2 dS/m salinity and potentially uncoupling prey-predator dynamics. Our results suggest that increased salinity has harmful effects on plants, herbivores, natural enemies, as well as plant-pest-predator interactions. The effects measured here suggest that the bottom-up effects of predatory insects on rice pests will likely decline in rice produced in coastal areas where salinity intrusion is common. Our findings indicate that elevated salinity influences tritrophic interactions in rice production landscapes, and further research should address resilient rice insect pest management combining multipests and predators in a changing environment.

Abstract
Introduction and Objectives: Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare fibro-inflammatory disease and a cause of ureteric obstruction that leads to obstructive uropathy. Although the mainstay of RPF treatment is medical, ureterolysis becomes a necessity if medical treatment fails or if patients are unable to tolerate side effects of conservative/medical management, including those of ureteric stents. We aimed to investigate our experience of laparoscopic ureterolysis (LU) and omental wrapping as a definitive surgical treatment for RPF. Patients and methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 17 patients who underwent LU between September 2009 and October 2018 in a single institution. Mode of presentation, investigation and interventions were reviewed. Outcome measures were stent or nephrostomy-free rates, post-ureterolysis change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), operative time, estimated blood loss, length of hospital stay, complications and need for additional procedures. MAG3 renography was performed to assess ureteral patency. Results: Among 17 patients, a total of 23 LU procedures were performed in 20 operative sessions. Median (IQR) length of hospital stay was 4 (2–6) days. Median length of follow-up was 23.5 months (range 4–92 months), where 14 patients completed at least 15 months of follow-up. All patients were either stent ( n=9) or nephrostomy ( n=8) dependent before ureterolysis. Some 82.4% patients ( n=14) remain stent/nephrostomy free after LU. Renal function remains stable after ureterolysis with a median (IQR) change in eGFR at latest follow-up of: +7.5 (−8 to +23), ( P=0.74). Conclusions: LU is safe and effective at halting decline in renal dysfunction secondary to RPF. It has reliably avoided internal or external ureteric drainage in most patients. Consideration should be given to early referral to a specialised centre for ureterolysis in the context of multi-disciplinary management of benign RPF, to preservation of renal function and to render patients stent or nephrostomy free. Abstract
Free flap reconstruction after surgical ablation of head & neck cancer greatly improve the surgical outcome. Microvascular anastomosis is an important part of Microsurgery and it is not widely practiced in every center. A retrospective review was conducted in the Head & Neck Division of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Department, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Bangladesh from May 2016 to June 2017. Total 20 patients with head & neck cancer had been treated surgically between this period and 14 patients were reconstructed with free flap. The focus of this study is to establish the surgical outcome, which is more with free flap reconstruction in the patients previously diagnosed as head & neck cancer. We reconstructed 14 cases of oral cavity carcinoma (Stage IV) with the free flap. Majority cases were carcinoma involving the buccal mucosa with retromolar trigone (36%) followed by buccal mucosa (22%), buccal mucosa with lower alveolus (21%), carcinoma tongue with floor of the mouth (14%) and floor of the mouth (7%). Radial forearm freflap (RFFF) were commonly used in 10 cases (71.4%) and Anterolateral thigh flap (ALT) used in four cases (21.5%). Partial flap loss was seen in one case and wound infection occurred in another case but both were managed successfully with postoperative dressing and debridement. Microvascular free flap reconstruction can be a good choice after surgical removal of the head & neck cancer diseases and it should be practiced in every well-equipped tertiary medical center with the help of properly trained surgeon.

Abstract
PURPOSE 124I-PU-H71 is an investigational first-in-class radiologic agent specific for imaging tumor epichaperome formations. The intracellular epichaperome forms under cellular stress and is a clinically validated oncotherapeutic target. We conducted a first-in-human study of microdose 124I-PU-H71 for PET to study in vivo biodistribution, pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and safety; and the feasibility of epichaperome-targeted tumor imaging. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Adult patients with cancer (n = 30) received 124I-PU-H71 tracer (201±12 MBq, <25 μg) intravenous bolus followed by PET/CT scans and blood radioassays. RESULTS 124I-PU-H71 PET detected tumors of different cancer types (breast, lymphoma, neuroblastoma, genitourinary, gynecologic, sarcoma, and pancreas). 124I-PU-H71 was retained by tumors for several days while it cleared rapidly from bones, healthy soft tissues, and blood. Radiation dosimetry is favorable and patients suffered no adverse effects. CONCLUSIONS Our first-in-human results demonstrate the safety and feasibility of noninvasive in vivo detection of tumor epichaperomes using 124I-PU-H71 PET, supporting clinical development of PU-H71 and other epichaperome-targeted therapeutics.

Abstract
Interferon-γ (IFNγ) is a pleiotropic cytokine that signals to many different cell types. IFNγ has both antitumor functions and pro-tumorigenic effects and regulates different aspects of cell physiology, including metabolism. Cancer cells undergo a complex rearrangement of metabolic pathways that allows them to satisfy the needs of increased proliferation, and many cancer cells redirect glucose metabolism from oxidative phosphorylation to aerobic glycolysis. In this chapter, we describe a protocol that utilizes the Agilent Seahorse XFp Analyzer to assess mitochondrial respiration and glycolysis in ovarian cancer cells treated with IFNγ.

Abstract
Reconstruction of total lip is a challenging task for a plastic surgeon. It becomes more complicated when there is loss of additional tissues like angle of mouth, buccal mucosa or floor of the mouth. Radial forearm flap with palmaris longus tendon provides an easier but reliable technique for three dimensional lip reconstructions with good functional and aesthetic outcome. In this short observational series we included 5 patients of total lip reconstruction and conducted at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and Private Clinic of Sylhet, Bangladesh from January 2014 to December 2017. Among these one was a case of basal cell carcinoma of upper lip and rest was squamous cell carcinoma of lower lip. The mean age was 71 years. All the flaps survived and patients had normal speech and oral continence. Composite radial forearm flap with palmaris longus tendon is a good, reliable option for total lip reconstruction.

Abstract
Ovarian cancer (OC) is the most common cause of cancer deaths among gynecological malignancies. OC ascites contain multicellular spheroid aggregates, which exhibit increased pro-survival signaling, invasive behavior, and chemotherapeutic resistance. OC cells are characterized by an increased expression of the pro-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic chemokine interleukin-8 (IL-8, CXCL8), which increases their survival and migration, thus contributing to OC metastasis and angiogenesis. While previous studies have shown that IL-8 increases proliferation of OC cells grown in monolayer cultures, the effect of IL-8 on proliferation of OC cells grown in 3D spheroids has not been investigated. The spheroid 3D culture assays have been particularly useful in translational research since they allow cell-to-cell interactions that resemble tumor growth in vivo, while allowing easy cell manipulations and visualization. Here, we used the 3D spheroid culture assay to investigate the effect of IL-8 on OC cell proliferation. Using this assay, our results show that IL-8 significantly increases proliferation of OC cells grown in 3D spheroids.

Abstract
Alterations in protein-protein interaction networks are at the core of malignant transformation but have yet to be translated into appropriate diagnostic tools. We make use of the kinetic selectivity properties of an imaging probe to visualize and measure the epichaperome, a pathologic protein-protein interaction network. We are able to assay and image epichaperome networks in cancer and their engagement by inhibitor in patients' tumors at single-lesion resolution in real time, and demonstrate that quantitative evaluation at the level of individual tumors can be used to optimize dose and schedule selection. We thus provide preclinical and clinical evidence in the use of this theranostic platform for precision medicine targeting of the aberrant properties of protein networks.

Abstract
The female ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMN) is a focal substrate for estradiol (E) regulation of energy balance, feeding, and body weight, but how E shapes VMN gluco-regulatory signaling in each sex is unclear. This study investigated the hypothesis that estrogen receptor-alpha (ERα) and/or -beta (ERβ) control VMN signals that inhibit [γ-aminobutyric acid] or stimulate [nitric oxide, steroidogenic factor-1 (SF-1)] counter-regulation in a sex-dependent manner. VMN nitrergic neurons monitor astrocyte fuel provision; here, we examined how these ER regulate astrocyte glycogen metabolic enzyme, monocarboxylate transporter, and adrenoreceptor protein responses to insulin-induced hypoglycemia (IIH) in each sex. Testes-intact male and E-replaced ovariectomized female rats were pretreated by intracerebroventricular ERα antagonist (MPP) or ERβ antagonist (PHTPP) administration before IIH. Data implicate both ER in hypoglycemic inhibition of neuronal nitric oxide synthase protein in each sex and up-regulation of glutamate decarboxylase65/67 and SF-1 expression in females. ERα and -β enhance astrocyte AMPK and glycogen synthase expression and inhibit glycogen phosphorylase in hypoglycemic females, while ERβ suppresses the same proteins in males. Differential VMN astrocyte protein responses to IIH may partially reflect ERα and -β augmentation of ERβ and down-regulation of alpha1, alpha2, and beta1 adrenoreceptor proteins in females, versus ERβ repression of GPER and alpha2 adrenoreceptor profiles in males. MPP or PHTPP pretreatment blunted counter-regulatory hormone secretion in hypoglycemic males only, suggesting that in males one or more VMN neurotransmitters exhibiting sensitivity to forebrain ER may passively regulate this endocrine outflow, whereas female forebrain ERα and -β are apparently uninvolved in these contra-regulatory responses.

The proto-oncogene Bcl3 induces immune checkpoint PD-L1 expression, mediating proliferation of ovarian cancer cells. J Biol Chem 2018; 293:15483-15496. Abstract
The proto-oncogene Bcl3 induces survival and proliferation in cancer cells; however, its function and regulation in ovarian cancer (OC) remain unknown. Here, we show that Bcl3 expression is increased in human OC tissues. Surprisingly, however, we found that in addition to promoting survival, proliferation, and migration of OC cells, Bcl3 promotes both constitutive and interferon-γ (IFN)-induced expression of the immune checkpoint molecule PD-L1. The Bcl3 expression in OC cells is further increased by IFN, resulting in increased PD-L1 transcription. The mechanism consists of an IFN-induced, Bcl3- and p300-dependent PD-L1 promoter occupancy by Lys-314/315 acetylated p65 NF-κB. Blocking PD-L1 by neutralizing antibody reduces proliferation of OC cells overexpressing Bcl3, suggesting that the pro-proliferative effect of Bcl3 in OC cells is partly mediated by PD-L1. Together, this work identifies PD-L1 as a novel target of Bcl3, and links Bcl3 to IFNγ signaling and PD-L1-mediated immune escape.

Abstract
This cross sectional descriptive study was performed on 70 postmortem vermiform appendix (male 34 and female 36) to find out the external diameter of vermiform appendix of Bangladeshi people in different age and sex. The specimens were collected from autopsy laboratory of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from October 2016 to March 2017 by purposive sampling technique. The collected samples were divided into four age groups. They were Group A (upto 20 years), Group B (21 to 40 years), Group C (41 to 60 years) and Group D (above 60 years). Dissection was performed according to standard autopsy techniques. The vermiform appendix was collected and preserved in 10% formol-saline solution. The external diameter of vermiform appendix was measured with the help of digital slide calipers. Three measurements were taken at its base, middle and near the tip (1cm away from the tip) and expressed in mm. The data were analyzed by using student unpaired 't' test and compaired with the findings of other national and international studies and standard text books. It was observed that external diameter of vermiform appendix gradually decreased as age advanced. The mean±SD external diameter of vermiform appendix at base was 6.50±0.82 mm, 6.22±0.60 mm, 6.00±0.51 mm and 5.51±0.57 mm in Group A, B, C & D respectively. The mean±SD external diameter of vermiform appendix at middle was 6.09±0.89 mm, 5.67±0.65 mm, 5.38±0.59 mm and 4.95±0.76 mm in Group A, B, C and D respectively. The mean±SD external diameter of vermiform appendix near the tip (1 cm away from the tip) was 5.73±0.88 mm, 5.21±0.72 mm, 4.81±0.74 mm and 4.34±0.74 mm in Group A, B, C and D respectively. Statistical analysis shows that the mean differences of external diameter of vermiform appendix at its base between Group A&D, B&D were statistically moderately significant at p<0.01 level. Between Group C&D was statistically significant at p<0.05 level and between Group A&B, B&C, A&C were statistically non significant at p = or >0.05 level. Mean differences of external diameter of vermiform appendix at its middle between Group A&D, B&D were statistically moderately significant at p<0.01 level. Between Group A&C was statistically significant at p<0.05 level and between Group A&B, B&C, C&D were statistically non significant at p = or >0.05 level. Mean differences of external diameter of vermiform appendix near its tip (1 cm away from the tip) between Group A&D was statistically highly significant at p<0.001 and mean differences between Group B&D, A&C were statistically moderately significant at p<0.01 level. Between Group A&B was statistically significant at p<0.05 level and between Group B&C, C&D were statistically non significant at p = or >0.05 level. Mean external diameter of vermiform appendix in male was higher than that of female in all age group at its base, middle and near the tip (1cm away from the tip) but mean difference between sexes in the different study groups was statistically non significant at p = or >0.05 level. The present study will help to increase the information pool on the external diameter of vermiform appendix of Bangladeshi people.

Abstract
The rationale for developing histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors (HDACi) as anticancer agents was based on their ability to induce apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in cancer cells. However, while HDACi have been remarkably effective in the treatment of hematological malignancies, clinical studies with HDACi as single agents in solid cancers have been disappointing. Recent studies have shown that, in addition to inducing apoptosis in cancer cells, class I HDACi induce IκB kinase (IKK)-dependent expression of proinflammatory chemokines, such as interleukin-8 (IL8; CXCL8), resulting in the increased proliferation of tumor cells, and limiting the effectiveness of HDACi in solid tumors. Here, we discuss the mechanisms responsible for HDACi-induced CXCL8 expression, and opportunities for combination therapies targeting HDACs and IKK in solid tumors.

Abstract
Overexpression of the pro-angiogenic chemokine IL-8 (CXCL8) is associated with a poor prognosis in several solid tumors, including epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Even though histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibition has shown remarkable antitumor activity in hematological malignancies, it has been less effective in solid tumors, including EOC. Here we report results that may explain the decreased efficiency of HDAC inhibition in EOC, based on our data demonstrating that HDAC inhibition specifically induces expression of IL-8/CXCL8 in SKOV3, CAOV3, and OVCAR3 cells. Suppression or neutralization of vorinostat-induced IL-8/CXCL8 potentiates the vorinostat inhibitory effect on cell viability and proliferation. The IL-8/CXCL8 expression induced by vorinostat in EOC cells is dependent on IκB kinase (IKK) activity and associated with a gene-specific recruitment of IKKβ and IKK-dependent recruitment of p65 NFκB to the IL-8/CXCL8 promoter. In addition, HDAC inhibition induces acetylation of p65 and histone H3 and their IL-8/CXCL8 promoter occupancy. In vivo results demonstrate that combining vorinostat and the IKK inhibitor Bay 117085 significantly reduces tumor growth in nude mice compared with control untreated mice or either drug alone. Mice in the combination group had the lowest IL-8/CXCL8 tumor levels and the lowest tumor expression of the murine neutrophil [7/4] antigen, indicating reduced neutrophil infiltration. Together, our results demonstrate that HDAC inhibition specifically induces IL-8/CXCL8 expression in EOC cells and that the mechanism involves IKK, suggesting that using IKK inhibitors may increase the effectiveness of HDAC inhibitors when treating ovarian cancer and other solid tumors characterized by increased IL-8/CXCL8 expression.

Abstract
Reproductive management is necessary to prevent deleterious genetic disorders in purebred dogs, but comprehensive studies aimed at prevention of multiple underlying genetic disorders in a single breed have not been performed. The aims of this study were to examine mutant allele frequencies associated with multiple genetic disorders, using Border collies as a representative breed, and to make recommendations for prevention of the disorders. Genotyping of known mutations associated with seven recessive genetic disorders was performed using PCR assays. More than half (56%) of the Border collies had no mutant alleles associated with any of the seven disorders, suggesting that these disorders can be removed from the population over several generations. Since frequencies of each mutant allele differed among disorders, reproductive management should be performed after the establishment of prevention schemes that are appropriate for each disorder, the type and specificity of genetic test available, and the effective population size in each breeding colony.

Abstract
This cross sectional descriptive study was done by using nonprobability sampling technique and performed by examining 63 (sixty three) cerebellum. Out of them 40 postmortem human cerebellum collected from Bangladeshi cadavers of both sexes (male 25 and female 15) age ranging from 5 to 60 years and 23 cerebellums from caesarian section of intrauterine death cases of both sexes (male 14 and female 9) age ranging from 34 to 41 weeks of gestation. Specimens were collected from dead bodies autopsied on different dates from April' 2009 to September' 2009 at the autopsy laboratory of department of Forensic Medicine and prenatal cases from Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department of Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh. The collected specimens were grouped into three age groups like Group A (28 to 42 weeks of gestation), Group B (5 to 30 years) and Group C (31 to 60 years) and, two sex groups (male and female) and two sides (right and left). A transverse section was made at the level of horizontal fissure, and length and breadth of dentate nucleus were measured by divider and scale. The mean (±SD) length and breadth of dentate nucleus was 8.619±2.995mm and 14.770±3.604mm respectively and it was observed that length and breadth of dentate nucleus increased with age upto certain level then slightly decreased in the late age Group C. In this study, differences of the mean length of dentate nucleus on both right and left sides were statistically moderately significant between age Groups A&B. The differences of mean breadth of dentate nucleus on both right and left side were statistically highly significant between age Groups A&B and moderately significant between age Groups A&C on right side and only significant on left side. The differences between male & female were statistically insignificant in length and breadth of dentate nucleus.

Abstract
The molecular analysis of established cancer cell lines has been the mainstay of cancer research for the past several decades. Cell culture provides both direct and rapid analysis of therapeutic sensitivity and resistance. However, recent evidence suggests that therapeutic response is not exclusive to the inherent molecular composition of cancer cells but rather is greatly influenced by the tumor cell microenvironment, a feature that cannot be recapitulated by traditional culturing methods. Even implementation of tumor xenografts, though providing a wealth of information on drug delivery/efficacy, cannot capture the tumor cell/microenvironment crosstalk (i.e., soluble factors) that occurs within human tumors and greatly impacts tumor response. To this extent, we have developed an ex vivo (fresh tissue sectioning) technique which allows for the direct assessment of treatment response for preclinical and clinical therapeutics development. This technique maintains tissue integrity and cellular architecture within the tumor cell/microenvironment context throughout treatment response providing a more precise means to assess drug efficacy.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to detect the etiology, type and prevalence of colour blindness & to create awareness among the blind personnel. A survey of colour blindness among 239 ( male-87 & female-152) Medical and Dental first year students during their medical checkup before admission into Mymensingh Medical College in the session of 2012-2013 was done. Among them 8(male-7, female-1) were colour blind and prevalence was 3.35 % with a marked male predominance (male 8.04%, female 0.66 %). In view of the potential difficulties faced by such personnel in clinical works, detection during medical admission allowed appropriate counseling regarding subject selection for their future carrier.

Abstract
The present non randomized clinical trial was conducted in the Center for Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound, Mymensingh, Bangladesh for duration of one year. Total 30 patients with hyperthyroidism diagnosed by clinical and biochemical profile were included in the study. All patients received radioiodine treatment and regular follow up at 1st month, 3rd month, 6th month & 9th month were done to evaluate clinical and biochemical status and complications. Data were analyzed by computer with SPSS programme using 't' test and chi-square test. In the present study, out of 30 respondents more than three fourth of the respondents (76.6%) were in the age group of 31-50 years followed by less than 30 years are group (16.7%) and rest of respondents were in the age group of more than 50 years (06.7%). Mean±SD and range of age of the respondents were 39.80±10.02 years and 17-65 years respectively. Among the 30 respondents 11(36.7%) were male and 19(63.3%) were female. Male to female ratio was 1:1.73. Out of 30 patients 26(86.7%) presented with goiter and among them 21(80.8%) has diffused goiter and five (19.2%) had nodular goiter. Baseline mean±SD, median, range of serum T₃ level were 5.24±3.62, 4.34, 1.48-14.65nmol/L respectively. Base line mean±SD, median range of serum T₄ level were 192.25±99.17, 201.77, 1.75-336.25nmol/L respectively. Baseline mean±SD, median range of serum TSH level were 6.33±23.93, 0.15-0.07, 130.46nmol/L respectively. In the present study serum T₃, T₄ level among the respondents sharply decrease from baseline to 2nd follow up then gradually decrease from 2nd to 4th follow up. Serum TSH level gradually increases from baseline to 3rd follow up and then gradually decreases from 3rd to 4th follow up. The result showed radioiodine is an effective option for the treatment of thyrotoxicosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Canine GM1 gangliosidosis is a fatal disease in the Shiba Inu breed, which is one of the most popular traditional breeds in Japan and is maintained as a standard breed in many countries. Therefore, it is important to control and reduce the prevalence of GM1 gangliosidosis for maintaining the quality of this breed and to ensure supply of healthy dogs to prospective breeders and owners. This molecular epidemiological survey was performed to formulate an effective strategy for the control and prevention of this disease. RESULTS The survey was carried out among 590 clinically unaffected Shiba Inu dogs from the 8 districts of Japan, and a genotyping test was used to determine nation-wide and regional carrier frequencies. The number and native district of affected dogs identified in 16 years from 1997 to June 2013 were also surveyed retrospectively. Of the 590 dogs examined, 6 dogs (1.02%, 6/590) were carriers: 3 dogs (2.27%, 3/132) from the Kinki district and the other 3 dogs from the Hokkaido, Kanto, and Shikoku districts. The retrospective survey revealed 23 affected dogs, among which, 19 dogs (82.6%) were born within the last 7 years. Of the 23 affected dogs, 12 dogs (52.2%) were from the Kinki district. Pedigree analysis demonstrated that all the affected dogs and carriers with the pedigree information have a close blood relationship. CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that the current carrier frequency for GM1 gangliosidosis is on the average 1.02% in Japan and rather high in the Kinki district, which may be related to the high prevalence observed over the past 16 years in this region. This observation suggests that carrier dogs are distributed all over Japan; however, kennels in the Kinki district may face an increased risk of GM1 gangliosidosis. Therefore, for effective control and prevention of this disease, it is necessary to examine as many breeding dogs as possible from all regions of Japan, especially from kennels located in areas with high prevalence and carrier frequency.

Abstract
The present study was carried out in the department of Neurology and Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh during the period of January 2009 to December 2010 to see the electrolyte changes in stroke. The serum concentration of Na⁺, K⁺, and Cl⁻ were measured in 110 cases during acute period of stroke (55 ischemic and 55 haemorrhagic strokes). Data were analyzed by computer with SPSS programme using 't' test and chi square test. In haemorrhagic stroke, out of 55 patients 29(52.72%) had abnormal sodium level, of them 23(41.8%) had hyponatremia, 6(10.9%) had hypernatremia. In contrast in ischemic stroke 23(41.80%) out of 55 had abnormal sodium level, of them 21(38%) had hyponatremia. The result showed that hyponatremia is almost equally common in both haemorrhagic and ischaemic group without significant difference (p>0.05). The study also revealed that hyponatremia is more common than hypernatremia in both groups. Mean ± SD of age of the haemorrhagic group was 60.80 ± 15.97 while the age of ischaemic group was 59.89 ± 15.84 years. Male, female ratio in haemorrhagic and ischaemic group 1:0.62 and 1:0.89 respectively. Mean ± SD of serum Na⁺, K⁺, Cl⁻ in haemorrhagic group were 136.18 ± 10.5, 3.83 ± 0.65, 97.96 ± 16.74 mmol/L, in ischaemic group 135.08 ± 9.08, 4.00 ± 0.75, 100.27 ± 8.39 mmol/L. The result showed no significant difference in haemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. Hyponatremia, hypokalamia and hyperchloredemia were more common than hypernatremia, hyperkalamia and hyperchloredemia. In haemorrhagic stroke, out of 55 patients, 21(38.18%) had abnormal potassium level, of them 19(34.55%) had hypokalemia, 2(3.63%) had hyperkalemia. In contrasts, in ischemic stroke, 15 out of 55(27.22%) had abnormal potassium level. Of them 12(21.81%) had hypokalemia and 3(5.45%) had hyperkalemia. The finding showed that hypokalemia is almost equally common in both haemorrhagic and ischaemic group without significant difference. The study also revealed that hypokalemia is more common than hyperkalemia in both groups. In haemorrhagic stroke, out of 55 patients 33(60%) had abnormal chloride level. Of them 20(36.4%) had hypochrloridemia, 13(23%) had hyperchrloridemia, in contrast, in ischemic stroke, 40 out of 55(60%) had abnormal chloride level, of them 22(40%) had hypochrloridemia and 18(32.7%) had hyperchrloridemia. The result showed that changes in chloride level after haemorrhagic and ischemic stroke are similar. The result showed hypochrloridemia is more common than hyperchrloridemia in both groups.

Abstract
The use of oral mucous membrane graft onlay urethroplasty represents the most widespread method of bulbar urethral stricture repair. We investigated the short term result of oral mucous membrane graft placed on the ventral surface for management of bulbar urethral stricture. Patients with Bulbar urethral stricture of any length, infection free urinary tract and informed consent for oral mucosa harvesting and urethroplasty were selected for study. We enrolled 108 cases of bulbar urethral stricture patients from January 2004 to July 2009. The mean ± SD preoperative maximum flow rate of 5.2 ± 2.6 ml/sec and mean ± SD PVR 87 ± 58.3 ml were treated by substitution urethroplasty with oral mucous membrane by a single surgical team in a private hospital. Causes of stricture were trauma 26(24.1%), infection 58(53.7%), catheter induced 8(7.4%), post TURP 11(10.2%) and unknown 5(4.6%). Oral mucous membrane was harvested from the cheek or from the inner side of lower lip. Defect of the urethra displayed by longitudinal ventral urethrotomy and the graft was sutured over the edges of the incised urethral mucosa over a 14 Fr latex Foley's catheter. Spongiosum tissue was closed over the graft. Pericatheter urethrogram was performed in all cases to check for the anastomotic leakage and the Catheter was removed after 2 weeks of the procedure. After removal of catheter uroflowmetry & ultrasound scan of bladder were performed to estimate the maximum flow rate and post voidal residue. The patient was followed-up every 3 months with uroflowmetry & ultrasonography. The median (range) age of the patients was 32(21-72) years. Mean follow up period was 36 months (range 12-54). Mean ± SD stricture length was 3.7 ± 2.6 cm. The overall success rate was 91.7%. Mean ± SD flow rate was 23 ± 4.2 ml/sec, mean ± SD post void residue was 25 ± 15.5 ml and patient quality of life (QOL) was excellent in almost all patients. Overall complications were seen in 9(8.3%) cases. Of which, restricture occurred in 6 patients; periurethral fistulae seen in 2 cases and per urethral bleeding in 1 patient. No significant complications were observed at the donor site. Oral numbness and mild discomfort complained by 67.6% patients which were managed by reassurance only. In our experience ventral placement of oral mucous membrane graft along with spongioplasty is a very easy procedure with very encouraging short term result.

Abstract
Trapped neutrophil syndrome is an autosomal recessive inherited neutropenia in Border collies. The causative mutation is a 4base pair deletion in exon 19 of the canine VPS13B gene. In this study, a real-time PCR assay was developed and a genotyping survey was carried out in Border collies in Japan. The carrier frequency was 11.1%, suggesting that the mutant allele frequency is high enough to warrant measures to control and prevent the disease.

Abstract
Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) constitutes a group of recessively inherited lysosomal storage diseases that primarily affect neuronal cells. Such diseases share certain clinical and pathologic features in human beings and animals. Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis in Border Collie dogs was first detected in Australia in the 1980s, and the pathogenic mutation was shown to be a nonsense mutation (c.619C>T) in exon 4 in canine CLN5 gene. In the present study, novel rapid genotyping assays including polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism, PCR primer-induced restriction analysis, mutagenically separated PCR, and real-time PCR with TaqMan minor groove binder probes, were developed. The utility of microchip electrophoresis was also evaluated. Furthermore, a genotyping survey was carried out in a population of Border Collies in Japan using these assays to determine the current allele frequency in Japan, providing information to control and prevent this disease in the next stage. All assays developed in the current study are available to discriminate these genotypes, and microchip electrophoresis showed a timesaving advantage over agarose gel electrophoresis. Of all assays, real-time PCR was the most suitable for large-scale examination because of its high throughput. The genotyping survey demonstrated that the carrier frequency was 8.1%. This finding suggested that the mutant allele frequency of NCL in Border Collies is high enough in Japan that measures to control and prevent the disease would be warranted. The genotyping assays developed in the present study could contribute to the prevention of NCL in Border Collies.

Abstract
GM1 gangliosidosis is a fatal, progressive neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations of the β-galactosidase ( GLB1) gene. In feline GM1 gangliosidosis, a pathogenic mutation (c.1448G>C) of the feline GLB1 gene was identified in Siamese and Korat cats previously diagnosed with the disease in the USA and Italy, respectively. The present study demonstrated the same mutation in a Siamese cat that had been diagnosed with GM1 gangliosidosis in Japan in the 1960s. The mutation was confirmed using DNA extracted from stored paraffin-embedded brain tissue by a direct sequencing method and a polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. This pathogenic mutation seems to have been distributed around the world.

Abstract
GM2 gangliosidosis variant 0 (Sandhoff disease, SD) is a fatal, progressive neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations in the HEXB gene. Toy poodles recently were reported as the second breed of dog with SD. The present paper describes the molecular defect of this canine SD as the first identification of a pathogenic mutation in the canine HEXB gene. Genomic and complementary DNA sequences covering exonic regions of the canine HEXB gene, except exon 1, were analysed using DNA and RNA in an affected dog. A homozygous single base pair deletion of guanine in exon 3 was identified at nucleotide position 283 of the putative open reading frame (c.283delG). This mutation has the potential to cause a frameshift resulting in the alteration of valine at amino acid position 59 to a stop codon (p.V59fsX). Genotyping using the mutagenically separated PCR method demonstrated a correlation between phenotype and genotype in dogs with a pedigree related to the disease and that the mutation was rare in a randomly-selected population of toy poodles. These results strongly suggest that the deletion is pathogenic.

Abstract
This observational study was conducted to know the bacteriological pattern of chronic suppurative otitis media. For this 110 patients of Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) were selected from January 2006 to December 2007 at the out patient department of Otolaryngology and Head Neck surgery, BSMMU and Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka. Among the 110 patients unilateral involvement was 76.36% and bilateral involvement was 23.64%. Ninety percent patients presented with tubotympanic variety and 10% patients presented with attico-antral variety. Bacteriologically pure growth was found in 79.09% cases, mixed growth in 10.91% cases, no growth in 10% cases. Only aerobic bacteria were isolated in the present series. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common organism (43.68%) isolated in pure culture followed by staphylococcus aureus 27.59%, E. coli 10.35%, Kleibsiella spp. 9.19%, proteus spp. 8.04%. Amikacin was the most effective antibiotic followed by Gentamycin, Ciprofloxacin, Ceftazidime, Cetriaxone. Before giving therapy bacterial growth and sensitivity pattern is to be known where facilities are available.

Abstract
P-glycoprotein, encoded by the MDR1 or ABCB1 gene, is an integral component of the blood–brain barrier as an efflux pump for xenobiotics crucial in limiting drug uptake into the central nervous system. Dogs homozygous for a 4–base pair deletion of the canine MDR1 gene show altered expression or function of P-glycoprotein, resulting in neurotoxicosis after administration of the substrate drugs. In the present study, the usefulness of microchip electrophoresis for genotyping assays detecting this deletion mutation was evaluated. Mutagenically separated polymerase chain reaction (MS-PCR) and real-time PCR assays were newly developed and evaluated. Furthermore, a genotyping survey was carried out in a population of Border Collies dogs in Japan to determine the allele frequency in this breed. Microchip electrophoresis showed advantages in detection sensitivity and time saving over other modes of electrophoresis. The MS-PCR assay clearly discriminated all genotypes. Real-time PCR assay was most suitable for a large-scale survey due to its high throughput and rapidity. The genotyping survey demonstrated that the carrier and mutant allele frequencies were 0.49% and 0.25%, respectively, suggesting that the mutant allele frequency in Border Collies is markedly low compared to that in the susceptible dog breeds such as rough and smooth Collies.

Abstract
Bangladesh is a developing country. Many workers are involved in different industries which are polluted with dust e.g. saw mill, rice mill, jarda factory etc. The present study may give a preliminary idea about the lung function status of those workers. The study has been designed to analyze the lung function status of those workers by measuring TCO2 aiming to recommend necessary steps to improved the quality of life of workers of dust industry in our socioeconomic context. This study was to evaluate pulmonary functional status of those workers who are exposed to dust in industries like saw mill 26.00 mmol/l, rice mill 31.10 mmol/l and jarda factory 22.11 mmol/l. In all groups p values were >0.1 which was not significant except jarda factory worker in which p value was <0.001 and it was highly significant. This study was carried out to increase the awareness of the workers and to reduce the cost of employment.

Abstract
Collie eye anomaly (CEA) is a canine inherited ocular disease that shows a wide variety of manifestations and severity of clinical lesions. Recently, a CEA-associated mutation was reported, and a DNA test that uses conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has now become available. The objective of the current study was to develop a novel rapid genotyping technique by using SYBR Green-based real-time PCR for future large-scale surveys as a key part in the strategy to eradicate CEA by selective breeding. First, a SYBR Green-based real-time PCR assay for genotyping of CEA was developed and evaluated by using purified DNA samples from normal, carrier, and affected Border Collies in which genotypes had previously been determined by conventional PCR. This real-time PCR assay demonstrated appropriate amplifications in all genotypes, and the results were consistent with those of conventional PCR. Second, the availability of Flinders Technology Associates filter paper (FTA card) as DNA templates for the real-time PCR assay was evaluated by using blood and saliva specimens to determine suitability for CEA screening. DNA-containing solution prepared from a disc of blood- or saliva-spotted FTA cards was available directly as templates for the real-time PCR assay when the volume of solution was 2.5% of the PCR mixture. In conclusion, SYBR Green-based real-time PCR combined with FTA cards is a rapid genotyping technique for CEA that can markedly shorten the overall time required for genotyping as well as simplify the sample preparation. Therefore, this newly developed technique suits large-scale screening in breeding populations of Collie-related breeds.

Abstract
The present study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during the period of July 2006 to June 2007 to evaluate the effect of pregnancy on serum LDL-cholesterol. The serum concentrations of LDL-cholesterol was measured in 100cases during their 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy and in a control group of 100 cases of non pregnant women which was matched on reproductive age. Data were analyzed by computer with SPSS program using unpaired student 't' test. The result showed that the pregnant women had significantly higher concentrations of serum LDL-cholesterol. Higher concentrations of serum LDL-cholesterol was more common in pregnant than control and reaching maximum at 3rd trimester of pregnancy. This may be a purely physiological response to pregnancy or it may be indicative of pathology in some women. These results warrant a follow up study to investigative whether the LDL hypercholesterolemia persists after parturition.

Abstract
This study was done to determine the effectiveness of in situ extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in upper ureteric calculi in terms of stone clearance, peroperative & postoperative complications and also to determine some criteria for selection of patients for this procedure. From July, 2003 to July 2004, a total of 67 patients, with excreting kidneys and having stone size less than 2 cm were treated by in situ ESWL using Lithostar plus Lithotriptor. The patient group comprised of 52 men and 15 women, age ranged from 14 years to 65 years. Of the total 67 patients selected for study 44 patients were included in group I, having stone size ?1.5 and visible distal flow of contrast on IVU & 23 patients were included in Group II with stone size>1.5 cm to 2 cm and contrast seen only upto stone. Four (04) patients from Group I and three (03) patients from group II were dropped out during the follow up period so that data of 40 patients in group I and 20 patients in group II were analyzed finally. Number of shock wave was given in 1 to 3 sessions. Finally 95% of group I and 85% of group II achieved complete clearance of calculi at the end of 3 sessions. In situ ESWL is a good option for the treatment of upper ureteric calculi.

Abstract
The mustard leaf beetle, Phaedon cochleariae (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a serious insect pest of cruciferous crops, known especially in Europe. Feeding performances of P. cochleariae on six varieties of crucifer crops (Sinapis alba, Flata and Litember; Raphanus sativus, Münchener Bier and Runder Schwarzer Winter; and Brassica chinensis, Joi Choi and Black Behi) was investigated. The larval performance, measured by weight increase within seven days, was significantly different among six cultivars. The highest larval weight increase observed was on the B. chinensis cultivars with the lowest GS contents, followed by R. sativus and S. alba cultivars. Furthermore, a better larval performance co-insisted with the presence of indolyl and aliphatic GS in cultivars like B. chinensis and R. sativus and was poor on mustard cultivars with aromatic GS. Similar to the weight increase observation, the oviposition performance of P. cochleariae adult beetle was also investigated on three varieties: S. alba: Litember, R. sativus: Muinchener Bier, and B. chinensis: Joi Choi. The female P. cochleoriae laid significantly different numbers of eggs within three days on the different cultivars of crucifers. The highest number of eggs was laid on the B. chinensis cultivar Joi Choi, followed by the radish and mustard cultivars Muinchener Bier and Litember, respectively. Differential oviposition behaviour of P. cochleariae on the different varieties might be explained by their different GS profiles and the dominating group of GS. Indolyl GS, which are abundant in B. chinensis, may have a more stimulatory effect on the oviposition of P. cochleariae than aromatic and aliphatic GS.

Abstract
The UV radiation assisted photocatalytic decolorization/degradation kinetics of an anionic dye erythrosine (ER), has been studied over TiO2 and ZnO surfaces. Since adsorption is the prerequisite condition for decolorization/degradation of dye molecules in presence of heterogeneous catalysis, the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were examined to verify the adsorption intensity. Standard adsorption free energy measurement implies that the adsorption of ER on both TiO2 and ZnO surfaces is spontaneous endothermic process. The effect of catalyst loading (TiO2/ZnO) revealed the fact that the maximum decolorization rate is obtained under an optimized catalyst loading condition. The decolorization efficiency was also investigated over the pH range of 5.0-10.0 indicating that increasing pH enhances decolorization efficiency. The influence of H2O2 on decolorization efficiency was found noticeable since it is a hydroxyl radical provider. The kinetic study of this degradation indicates that under the experimental condition, the decolorization mechanism follows zero order kinetics on the basis of Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) heterogeneous reaction mechanism.

Abstract
This study was done to appraise the effects of low-dose oral contraceptives (OCs) containing 30microgm ethinyl estradiol and 150microgm levonorgestrel on lipid metabolism by a lipid variable-serum HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C). HDL-C has been identified as a lipoprotein that protects against atherosclerosis and its levels are inversely proportional to the risk for developing ischemic coronary disease and venous thromboembolic disorders. Ninety young women within reproductive age group were picked for this study. Sixty women using low-dose oral contraceptives served as experimental group and thirty age matched hormonal contraceptive non users were selected for control group. Experimental group was again subdivided into OCs users for last one-year group, three-year group and five-year group. The result showed that there was no significant difference on serum HDL-cholesterol levels between users & non-users women. It is concluded that low-dose oral contraceptives regimens did not significantly affect the lipid metabolism. It can be safely used as contraceptive & non-contraceptive purposes. The value of studied parameter for serial longer duration of OCs uses needs to be assessed.

Abstract
A cross sectional descriptive type of study was done in 98 women of reproductive age. Among them 25 were in control group of non pregnant women and 73 were pregnant women of 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy with and without iron supplementation. The period of study was July 2004 to June 2005. The main objective of our study was to compare serum iron and total iron binding capacity in pregnant and non pregnant women. In present study serum iron was significantly increased in 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy that was supplemented with iron when compared with the same category of women who were not supplemented with iron. On the other hand serum total iron binding capacity (TIBC) was significantly increased in 3rd trimester of pregnancy that was not supplemented with iron when compared with the same category of women who were supplemented with iron. It is evident that the significantly low serum iron and high TIBC in pregnant women is due in part to dietary iron deficiency. Therefore, iron therapy in pregnancy is helpful to maintain the serum iron and TIBC nearer to that of non pregnant normal women.

Abstract
The effect of iodized and non-iodized table salt in goiter hyper-endemic area on the thyroid gland and its hormones T3, T4 and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) were studied in two hundred subjects from the Center for Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound, Mymensingh. Iodized and non-iodized salt users were called study and control groups respectively. The mean concentration of T3 were 2.38 nmol/L and 2.22 nmol/L & T4 concentration were 128.67 and 123.72 nmol/L in the study and control group respectively. The mean TSH concentration was 1.52 mIU/L and 1.62 mIU/L in study and control group. The data indicated that continuous and long term use of iodized salt increased both T3, T4 and decreased TSH in such a limit which was not statistically deferent at P< 0.05 level as compared to the control group. There was no significant change in occurrence of (hypo and hyper thyroidism or iodinated salt induced thyrotoxicosis) adverse effect, following iodine supplementation. The study shows that, mandatory mass iodination of table salt consumption in a hyper-endemic iodine deficient area is safe and does not cause any side effect. We suggest close regular monitoring of T3, T4, and TSH and further evaluation by specifically designed studies for any probable link between iodine induced hypo or hyperthyroidism and mass iodination of table salt consumption.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The study was carried out to appraise the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-C and LDL-C values in hypertensive patients for providing information to the health-policy planners and also to the clinical practitioners about the importance of routine monitoring of lipid profile in hypertensive patients for prevention of coronary heart disease and other consequences to combat morbidity and mortality and to reinforce the need to consider these parameters in daily clinical practice. It was a cross-sectional study. The study was conducted at Department of Physiology and Biochemistry of Mymensingh Medical College, Medicine Unit of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and in the community of Sadar, Mymensingh District. The period of the study was January 2005 to December 2005. A total number of seventy subjects were included in this study. Out of them 40 (forty) were hypertensive patients and 30 (thirty) were normotensive & healthy controls. Most of the hypertensive patients (65%) were taking treatment irregularly. Serum total cholesterol, serum triglyceride and serum LDL cholesterol were greater in hypertensive than those of normotensive . The differences of mean of serum total cholesterol, serum LDL cholesterol in between two groups were statistically significant and in case of serum triglyceride it was statistically highly significant. Serum HDL cholesterol was less in hypertensive than those of normotensive. The differences of mean of serum HDL cholesterol in between two groups were statistically highly significant. Among 40 hypertensives the number of "Getting treatment- regular" & "Getting treatment-irregular" was 14 (35%) & 26 (65%) respectively and the values are not statistically significant. Similarly in patients "suffering less than 5 years" and "suffering 5 years & above" the differences are also not statistically significant. CONCLUSION The observations of this study has revealed that most of the hypertensive patients are taking treatment irregularly and there was significant alteration of serum cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-C and LDL-C in hypertensive patients. Therefore, for routine monitoring of hypertensive patients to prevent the coronary heart disease (CHD) and other consequences, the reinforcement of the investigations of these parameters may be recommended in daily clinical practice.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine the effects of low-dose combined oral contraceptives(OCs) containing 30 gm Ethinyl estradiol with 150 microg Levonorgestrel on carbohydrate metabolism by a glycaemic variable -- fasting blood glucose level. It is now known that impairment of carbohydrate metabolism is a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease and other metabolic disorder. Sixty women age between 15-35 years using OCs served as experimental group and thirty age matched hormonal contraceptive non users were selected for control group. Experimental group was again subdivided into OCP (Oral contraceptive pill) users for last one year group, three year group and five year group. The result showed that there were no significant differences on blood glucose level between users and non-users women. It is concluded that the cyclic administration of monophasic low dose OCs did not altered blood glucose levels and there by have no additional adverse impact on women health reaffirming the ongoing oral contraceptive pill distribution program.

Abstract
This study was conducted in Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital, Mymensingh. It lasted for one year commencing in July 2003, and was designed to find out and compare the outcomes of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) with a view to reducing the complications. Forty cases of GDM with single pregnancy were selected as experimental group, while forty other cases of pregnant women without GDM constituted the control group. Questionnaire and observation chart were the research instrument in this study. Statistical analyses were done manually. It was found that the GDM mothers had a higher risk of complications like pre-eclampsia, hypertension, urinary tract infection and cesarean delivery. On the basis of these findings, however, appropriate measures for prevention, treatment and management of GDM may be adopted for better pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
This study was carried out in Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital, Mymensingh. The work, which lasted for one year commencing in July 2003, was designed to find out and compare the infant outcomes of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) with a view to reducing the complications. Forty cases of GDM with single pregnancy were selected as experimental group, while forty other cases of pregnant women without GDM constituted the control group. Questionnaire and observation charts were the research instruments. Statistical analyses were done manually. It was retrieved that the offspring of GDM mothers had a higher risk of macrosomia, neonatal jaundice and respiratory complications. The perinatal mortality rate was also more in GDM cases. However, befitting measures for prevention, treatment and management of GDM may be taken up to ameliorate the situation.

Abstract
The present study was done to determine the serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration in normal subjects and patients suffering from infection, psychiatric disorders and of surgery. A total number of 55 subjects within 18-55 years age were selected from Mymensingh Medical College Hospital during the period from July 2003 to June 2004. Normal subjects as control were 13 and 42 comprised the group experimental. According to different types of stress the experimental group was further divided in to four subgroups: infection, psychiatric, pre and post surgery. Serum CRP concentration was measured by Immunoturbidimetric method from each subject. Statistical analyses were done by using Student's ' t' test. Statistically significant rise of serum CRP was observed in infection, psychiatric disorders and post surgery group in comparison to control group (P< 0.001). The study indicated that subjects with infection, psychiatric disorder and post surgery stage were in stressful conditions that resulted increased synthesis of CRP by liver cells due to Hypothalamopituitaryadrenal (HPA) axis hyperactivity and immune mediated inflammation.
