Smart Nanofibrous Hydrogel Wound Dressings for Dynamic Infection Diagnosis and Control: Soft but Functionally Rigid

Chronic wounds, such as burns and diabetic foot ulcers, pose significant challenges to global healthcare systems due to prolonged hospitalization and increased costs attributed to susceptibility to bacterial infections. The conventional use of antibiotic-loaded and metal-impregnated dressings exacerbates concerns related to multidrug resistance and skin argyrosis. In response to these challenges, our research introduces a unique approach utilizing antibiotic-free smart hydrogel wound dressings with integrated infection eradication and diagnostic capabilities. Electrospinning stands out as a method capable of producing hydrogel nanofibrous materials possessing favorable characteristics for treating wounds and detecting infections under conditions utilizing sustainable materials. In this study, innovative dressings are fabricated through electrospinning polycaprolactone (PCL)/gelatin (GEL) hybrid hydrogel nanofibers, incorporating pDA as a cross-linker, εPL as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, and anthocyanin as a pH-responsive probe. The developed dressings demonstrate exceptional antioxidant (>90% radical scavenging) and antimicrobial properties (95-100% killing). The inclusion of polyphenols/flavonoids and εPL leads to absolute bacterial eradication, and in vitro assessments using HaCaT cells indicate increased cell proliferation, decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and enhanced cell viability (100% Cell viability). The dressings display notable alterations in color that correspond to different wound conditions. Specifically, they exhibit a red/violet hue under healthy wound conditions (pH 4-6.5) and a green/blue color under unhealthy wound conditions (pH > 6.5). These distinctive color changes provide valuable insights into the versatile applications of the dressings in the care and management of wounds. Our findings suggest that these antibiotic-free smart hydrogel wound dressings hold promise as an effective and sustainable solution for chronic wounds, providing simultaneous infection control and diagnostic monitoring. This research contributes to advancing the field of wound care, offering a potential paradigm shift in the development of next-generation wound dressings.

An insight to the recent advancements in detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis using biosensors: A systematic review

Since ancient times, Tuberculosis (TB) has been a severe invasive illness that has been prevalent for thousands of years and is also known as "consumption" or phthisis. TB is the most common chronic lung bacterial illness in the world, killing over 2 million people each year, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). As per the reports of WHO, in spite of technology advancements, the average rate of decline in global TB infections from 2000-2018 was only 1.6% per year, and the worldwide reduction in TB deaths was only 11%. In addition, COVID-19 pandemic has reversed years of global progress in tackling TB with fewer diagnosed cases. The majority of undiagnosed patients of TB are found in low- and middle-income countries where the GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay and sputum smear microscopy have been approved by the WHO as reference procedures for quickly detecting TB. Biosensors, like other cutting-edge technologies, have piqued researchers' interest since they offer a quick and accurate way to identify MTB. Modern integrated technologies allow for the rapid, low-cost, and highly precise detection of analytes in extremely little amounts of sample by biosensors. Here in this review, we outlined the severity of tuberculosis (TB) and the most recent developments in the biosensors sector, as well as their various kinds and benefits for TB detection. The review also emphasizes how widespread TB is and how it needs accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Bio-inspired polynorepinephrine based nanocoatings for reduced graphene oxide/gold nanoparticles composite for high-performance biosensing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Polydopamine (PDA) has established itself as a promising grafting and coating material, particularly for functional group-deprived electrochemically active nanomaterials such as graphene, MXene, CNT, metal nanoparticles, and so on, and has proven its extensive applicability in the design and development of electrochemical biosensor devices. However, polynorepinephrine (PNE), a sister compound of PDA, having additional -OH groups and greater coating uniformity and biocompatibility, has never been studied in the field of biosensors. Herein, we investigated PNE as a coating material for reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and gold nanoparticles (Au) in order to build an electrochemical genosensor for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) detection. Biotin-Avidin chemistry was used to covalently immobilize probe DNA (ssDNA) specific to MTB to the nanocomposite surface on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in order to construct biosensing electrodes. The formation of RGO/PNE and RGO/PNE/Au nanocomposite as well as the immobilization of ssDNA onto the bioelectrodes are both corroborated by UV-Visible, Raman, and XRD studies with FE-SEM and HR-TEM analysis. The electrochemical studies performed using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) showed the significant enhancement in charge transfer kinetics of RGO/PNE/GCE and RGO/PNE/Au/GCE electrode compared to GO/GCE electrode. The biosensing investigations performed using ssDNA/avidin/RGO/PNE/Au/GCE bioelectrode showed high sensitivity (2.3 × 10^-3 mA μM^-1), low detection limit (0.1 × 10^-7 μM), broad detection range (0.1 × 10^-2 to 0.1 × 10^-7 μM) with good selectivity and low response time (5 s) of the developed sensor. In comparison to the analogous RGO/PDA/Au material system, RGO/PNE/Au demonstrated increased enzyme loading, improved electrochemical responsiveness, and superior biosensing performance.

Ternary nanocomposite-based smart sensor: Reduced graphene oxide/polydopamine/alanine nanocomposite for simultaneous electrochemical detection of Cd2+, Pb2+, Fe2+, and Cu2+ ions

Heavy metal ion (HMI) sensors are the most sought commercial devices for environmental monitoring and food analysis research due to serious health concerns associated with HMI overdosage. Herein, we developed an effective electrochemical sensor for simultaneous detection of four HMI (Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Fe²⁺, and Cu²⁺) using a ternary nanocomposite of reduced graphene oxide functionalized with polydopamine and alanine (ALA/pDA/rGO). Comprehensive spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations were performed to ensure the formation of the ternary nanocomposite. The developed nanocomposite on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) yields >2-fold higher current than GO/GCE electrode with excellent electrochemical stability and charge transfer rate. Using DPV, various chemical and electrochemical parameters, such as supporting electrolyte, buffer pH, metal deposition time, and potential, were optimized to achieve highly sensitive detection of targeted HMI. For Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Fe²⁺, and Cu²⁺ sensing devised sensor exhibited detection limits of 1.46, 2.86, 50.23, and 17.95 ppb and sensitivity of 0.0929, 0.0744, 0.0051, and 0.0394 μA/ppb, respectively, with <6% interference. The sensor worked similarly well for real water samples with HMI. This study demonstrates a novel strategy for concurrently detecting and quantifying multiple HMI in water and soil using a smart ternary nanocomposite-based electrochemical sensor, which can also detect HMI in food samples.

Reduced Graphene Oxide-Polydopamine-Gold Nanoparticles: A Ternary Nanocomposite-Based Electrochemical Genosensor for Rapid and Early Mycobacterium tuberculosis Detection

Tuberculosis (TB) has been a devastating human illness for thousands of years. According to the WHO, around 10.4 million new cases of tuberculosis are identified every year, with 1.8 million deaths. To reduce these statistics and the mortality rate, an early and accurate TB diagnosis is essential. This study offers a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical biosensor for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) detection based on a ternary nanocomposite of reduced graphene oxide, polydopamine, and gold nanoparticles (rGO-PDA-AuNP). Avidin-biotin coupling was used to bind the MTB probe DNA onto the rGO-PDA-AuNP modified glassy carbon electrode (ssDNA/avidin/rGO-PDA-AuNP). UV-Visible, Raman, XRD, and TEM were used to evaluate the structural and morphological characteristics of rGO-PDA-AuNP. Furthermore, DNA immobilization is validated using FESEM and FT-IR techniques. The modified electrodes were electrochemically analyzed using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and the results indicate that the produced electrode can detect target DNA up to 0.1 × 10^-7 mM with 2.12 × 10^-3 mA µM^-1 sensitivity and a response time of 5 s. The constructed genosensor displayed high sensitivity and stability, and it also provides a unique strategy for diagnosing MTB at an early stage. Furthermore, our rGO-PDA-AuNP/GCE-based electrochemical platform has broad potential for creating biosensor systems for detecting various infectious pathogens and therapeutically significant biomarkers.

Atomic Cross-Talk at the Interface: Enhanced Lubricity and Wear and Corrosion Resistance in Sub 2 nm Hybrid Overcoats via Strengthened Interface Chemistry

Friction, wear, and corrosion remain the major causes of premature failure of diverse systems including hard-disk drives (HDDs). To enhance the areal density of HDDs beyond 1 Tb/in², the necessary low friction and high wear and corrosion resistance characteristics with sub 2 nm overcoats remain unachievable. Here we demonstrate that atom cross-talk not only manipulates the interface chemistry but also strengthens the tribological and corrosion properties of sub 2 nm overcoats. High-affinity (HA) atomically thin (∼0.4 nm) interlayers (ATIs, X_HA), namely Ti, Si, and SiN_x, are sandwiched between the hard-disk media and 1.5 nm thick carbon (C) overlayer to develop interface-enhanced sub 2 nm hybrid overcoats that consistently outperform a thicker conventional commercial overcoat (≥2.7 nm), with the C/SiN_x bilayer overcoat bettering all other <2 nm thick overcoats. These hybrid overcoats can enable the development of futuristic 2-4 Tb/in² areal density HDDs and can transform various moving-mechanical-system based technologies.

Patterning at the Resolution Limit of Commercial Electron Beam Lithography

It has been long known that low molecular weight resists can achieve a very high resolution, theoretically close to the probe diameter of the electron beam lithography (EBL) system. Despite technological improvements in EBL systems, the advances in resists have lagged behind. Here we demonstrate that a low-molecular-mass single-source precursor resist (based on cadmium(II) ethylxanthate complexed with pyridine) is capable of a achieving resolution (4 nm) that closely matches the measured probe diameter (∼3.8 nm). Energetic electrons enable the top-down radiolysis of the resist, while they provide the energy to construct the functional material from the bottom-up─unit cell by unit cell. Since this occurs only within the volume of resist exposed to primary electrons, the minimum size of the patterned features is close to the beam diameter. We speculate that angstrom-scale patterning of functional materials is possible with single-source precursor resists using an aberration-corrected electron beam writer with a spot size of ∼1 Å.

Design and evaluation of pyrimidine derivatives as potent inhibitors of ABCG2, a breast cancer resistance protein

The protein ATP-binding cassette subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) is one of the major factors behind multidrug resistance (MDR) in breast cancer. We performed three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) modelling, docking, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to design pyrimidine-based ABCG2 antagonists. The developed QSAR model (r 2 = 0.92, q 2 = 0.82, and good cross-validated r 2 = 0.73) dictate requirement of electrostatic, and hydrophobic fields for modulating bioactivity. Based on this rationale, we designed and screened 1010 new compounds, among them 2 (ND-510 and ND-500) exhibit excellent drug-like features. Comparative molecular docking, MM/GBSA and ADMET profiles were determined to understand the interactive poses, affinity, and drug-likeness of the designed compounds. Furthermore, MD simulations were performed with the ABCG2 receptor, and the results were compared with the two earlier synthesized active compounds. The outcomes of the study will help researchers to develop new antagonists for treatment of MDR breast cancer.

Recent Advances in Copper and Copper-Derived Materials for Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control

Antibacterial properties of copper have been known for ages. With the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), hospital-acquired infections, and the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, copper and copper-derived materials are being widely researched for healthcare ranging from therapeutics to advanced wound dressing to medical devices. We cover current research that highlights the potential uses of metallic and ionic copper, copper alloys, copper nanostructures, and copper composites as antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral agents, including those against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The applications of copper-enabled engineered materials in medical devices, wound dressings, personal protective equipment, and self-cleaning surfaces are discussed. We emphasize the potential of copper and copper-derived materials in combating AMR and efficiently reducing infections in clinical settings.

Carbon-Based Sorbents for Hydrogen Storage: Challenges and Sustainability at Operating Conditions for Renewable Energy

It is estimated that all fossil fuels will be depleted by 2060 if we continue to use them at the present rate. Therefore, there is an unmet need for an alternative source of energy with high calorific value. In this regard, hydrogen is considered the best alternative renewable fuel that could be used in practical conditions. Accordingly, researchers are looking for an ideal hydrogen storage system under ambient conditions for feasible applications. In many respects, carbon-based sorbents have emerged as the best possible hydrogen storage media. These carbon-based sorbents are cost-effective, eco-friendly, and readily available. In this Review, the present status of carbon-based materials in promoting solid-state hydrogen storage technologies at the operating temperature and pressure was reported. Experimental studies have shown that some carbon-based materials such as mesoporous graphene and doped carbon nanotubes may have hydrogen storage uptake of 3-7 wt %, while some theoretical studies have predicted up to 13.79 wt % of hydrogen uptake at ambient conditions. Also, it was found that different methods used for carbon materials synthesis played a vital role in hydrogen storage performance. Eventually, this Review will be helpful to the scientific community for finding the competent material and methodology to investigate the existing hydrogen uptake issues at operating conditions.

Unusual High Hardness and Load-Dependent Mechanical Characteristics of Hydrogenated Carbon-Nitrogen Hybrid Films

Mechanical components are exposed to a rigorous environment in a number of applications including engineering, aerospace, and automobiles. Thus, their service lifetime and reliability are always on the verge of risk. Protective coatings with high hardness are required to enhance their service lifetime and minimize the replacement cost and waste burden. Hydrogenated amorphous carbon including nitrogen-incorporated films, that are commonly deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, are widely used for commercial protective coating applications. However, their mechanical hardness still falls into the moderate hard regime. This needs to be substantially enhanced for advanced applications. Here, we report the synthesis of very hard nanostructured hydrogenated carbon-nitrogen hybrid (n-C:H:N) films. The optimized n-C:H:N film displays a hardness of about 36 GPa, elastic modulus of 360 GPa, and reasonably good elastic recovery (ER) of 62.7%. The mechanical properties of n-C:H:N films are further tailored when nitrogen pressure is tuned during the growth. The realized remarkably improved mechanical properties are correlated with the films' structural properties and experimental growth conditions. We also conducted density functional theory calculations that show the trend for the elastic modulus of the amorphous carbon films with varying nitrogen concentrations matches well with experimentally measured values. Finally, we probed load-dependent mechanical properties of n-C:H:N films and found an anomalous behavior; some of the mechanical parameters, for instance, ER, reveal an irregular trend with indentation load, which we explain in the framework of the film-substrate composite concept. Overall, this work uncovers many unknown and exciting mechanical phenomena that could pave the way for new technological developments.

2D Materials-Based Aptamer Biosensors: Present Status and Way Forward

Current advances in constructing functional nanomaterials and elegantly designed nanostructures have opened up new possibilities for the fabrication of viable field biosensors. Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have fascinated much attention due to their chemical, optical, physicochemical, and electronic properties. They are ultrathin nanomaterials with unique properties such as high surface-to-volume ratio, surface charge, shape, high anisotropy, and adjustable chemical functionality. 2DMs such as graphene-based 2D materials, Silicate clays, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), MXenes, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and transition metal oxides (TMOs) offer intensified physicochemical and biological functionality and have proven to be very promising candidates for biological applications and technologies. 2DMs have a multivalent structure that can easily bind to single-stranded DNA/RNA (aptamers) through covalent, non-covalent, hydrogen bond, and π-stacking interactions, whereas aptamers have a small size, excellent chemical stability, and low immunogenicity with high affinity and specificity. This review discussed the potential of various 2D material-based aptasensor for diagnostic applications, e.g., protein detection, environmental monitoring, pathogens detection, etc.

Angstrom-Scale Transparent Overcoats: Interfacial Nitrogen-Driven Atomic Intermingling Promotes Lubricity and Surface Protection of Ultrathin Carbon

Lubricity, a phenomenon which enables the ease of motion of objects, and wear resistance, which minimizes material damage or degradation, are important fundamental characteristics for sustainable technology developments. Ultrathin coatings that promote lubricity and wear resistance are of huge importance for a number of applications, including magnetic storage and micro-/nanoelectromechanical systems. Conventional ultrathin coatings have, however, reached their limit. Graphene-based materials that have shown promise to reduce friction and wear have many intrinsic limitations such as high temperature and substrate-specific growth. To address these concerns, a great deal of research is currently ongoing to optimize graphene-based materials. Here we discover that angstrom-thick carbon (8 Å) significantly reduces interfacial friction and wear. This lubricant shows ultrahigh optical transparency and can be directly deposited on a wide range of surfaces at room temperature. Experiments combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the lubricating efficacy of 8 Å carbon is further improved via interfacial nitrogen.

Keratinophilic fungi from the feathers of Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) in Maharastra India

A total of 70 feathers samples of Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) were collected from 7 Emu farms situated at two districts (Raigad and Thane) of Maharashtra (India) and screened for resident keratinophilic fungi. Among them, 44 isolates were recovered and identified by evaluating characteristic macro- and micro-morphological features. Further gene products corresponding to the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA region from all isolates were amplified and sequenced. Homology search was performed using BLAST program against non-redundant nucleotide database, and significantly matched DNA sequences deposited to the NCBI Gene Bank for reference purposes. Eight identified fungal species belongs to 7 different genera named as Aphanoascus terreus Ac_MW577456 (21.43%), Microsporum gypseum Ac_MW580920 (14.29%), Ctenomyces serratus Ac_MW577459 (10.0%), Uncinocarpus orissi Ac_MW577461 (5.17%), Aphanoascus verrucosus Ac_MW577458 (4.29%), Gymnascella dankaliensis Ac_MW577460 (2.86%), Gymnoascoideus petalosporus Ac_MW577462 (2.86%) and Arthroderma tuberculatum Ac_MW577457 (1.43%).

3D-Printed Microfluidics and Potential Biomedical Applications

3D printing is a smart additive manufacturing technique that allows the engineering of biomedical devices that are usually difficult to design using conventional methodologies such as machining or molding. Nowadays, 3D-printed microfluidics has gained enormous attention due to their various advantages including fast production, cost-effectiveness, and accurate designing of a range of products even geometrically complex devices. In this review, we focused on the recent significant findings in the field of 3D-printed microfluidic devices for biomedical applications. 3D printers are used as fabrication tools for a broad variety of systems for a range of applications like diagnostic microfluidic chips to detect different analytes, for example, glucose, lactate, and glutamate and the biomarkers related to different clinically relevant diseases, for example, malaria, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. 3D printers can print various materials (inorganic and polymers) with varying density, strength, and chemical properties that provide users with a broad variety of strategic options. In this article, we have discussed potential 3D printing techniques for the fabrication of microfluidic devices that are suitable for biomedical applications. Emerging diagnostic technologies using 3D printing as a method for integrating living cells or biomaterials into 3D printing are also reviewed.

Triple-Smart Eco-Friendly Chili Anthracnose Control Agro-Nanocarrier

Pesticide leaching and soil contamination are major issues in the present agriculture formulations. Hence, here 2D graphene oxide in combination with cationic, anionic, or nonionic polymers were tested for runoff resistance and targeted release behavior. Cationic polymer supplemented the binding of rGO on leaf surface by 30% more than control and reduced off-target leaching in soil by 45% more than control. Further, to enhance the fruit rot control caused by Colletotrichum capsici in chili crop, the rGO was decorated with Cu_2-xSe nanocrystals, which provided combined disease control with captan. The chitosan coating in the nanocomposite added targeted pH-responsive fungal inhibition behavior and could reduce the C. capsici growth by ∼1/2 times compared to captan control.

Potential of graphene-based materials to combat COVID-19: properties, perspectives, and prospects

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a new virus in the coronavirus family that causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19), emerges as a big threat to the human race. To date, there is no medicine and vaccine available for COVID-19 treatment. While the development of medicines and vaccines are essentially and urgently required, what is also extremely important is the repurposing of smart materials to design effective systems for combating COVID-19. Graphene and graphene-related materials (GRMs) exhibit extraordinary physicochemical, electrical, optical, antiviral, antimicrobial, and other fascinating properties that warrant them as potential candidates for designing and development of high-performance components and devices required for COVID-19 pandemic and other futuristic calamities. In this article, we discuss the potential of graphene and GRMs for healthcare applications and how they may contribute to fighting against COVID-19.

Lightweight carbon-red mud hybrid foam toward fire-resistant and efficient shield against electromagnetic interference

Lightweight, porous, high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and fire-resistant materials are highly demanded in aerospace and defense applications. Due to the lightweight, open porosity and high surface area, carbon foam has been considered as one of the most promising candidates for EMI shielding applications. In the present investigation, we demonstrate the development of novel carbon-red mud hybrid foams with excellent EMI shielding effectiveness (SE). The carbon-red mud hybrid foams are prepared using phenolic resin as a carbon source and red mud (industrial waste) as filler. We observed that the inclusion of red mud in carbon-red mud hybrid foams significantly enhances their dielectric, magnetic, EMI shielding and thermal properties. The EMI shielding results show that absorption is the main contributor to the total EMI SE. The maximum total EMI shielding effectiveness is achieved to be 51.4 dB in the frequency range of 8.2–12.4 GHz for carbon-red mud hybrid foam having 20 wt. % of red mud. The CF-RM20 also showed excellent fire resistance and high thermal stability at elevated temperatures.

Room-Temperature Patterning of Nanoscale MoS2 under an Electron Beam

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) is traditionally grown at a high temperature and subsequently patterned to study its electronic properties or make devices. This method imposes severe limitations on the shape and size of MoS₂ crystals that can be patterned precisely at required positions. Here, we describe a method of direct nanoscale patterning of MoS₂ at room temperature by exposing a molybdenum thiocubane single-source precursor to a beam of electrons. Molybdenum thiocubanes with various alkylxanthate moieties [Mo₄S₄(ROCS₂)₆, where R = alkyl] were prepared using a "self-assembly" approach. Micro-Raman and micro-FTIR spectroscopic studies suggest that exposure to a relatively smaller dose of electrons results in the breakdown of xanthate moieties, leading to the formation of MoS₂. High-resolution transmission electron micrographs suggest that the growth of MoS₂ most likely happens along (100) planes. An electron-beam-induced chemical transformation of a molybdenum thiocubane resist was exploited to fabricate sub-10 nm MoS₂ lines and dense dots as small as 13 nm with a pitch of 33 nm. Since this technique does not require the liftoff and etching steps, patterning of MoS₂ with interesting shapes, sizes, and thicknesses potentially leading to tunable band gap is possible.

Multifunctional Antimicrobial Nanofiber Dressings Containing ε-Polylysine for the Eradication of Bacterial Bioburden and Promotion of Wound Healing in Critically Colonized Wounds

Bacterial colonization of acute and chronic wounds is often associated with delayed wound healing and prolonged hospitalization. The rise of multi-drug resistant bacteria and the poor biocompatibility of topical antimicrobials warrant safe and effective antimicrobials. Antimicrobial agents that target microbial membranes without interfering with the mammalian cell proliferation and migration hold great promise in the treatment of traumatic wounds. This article reports the utility of superhydrophilic electrospun gelatin nanofiber dressings (NFDs) containing a broad-spectrum antimicrobial polymer, ε-polylysine (εPL), crosslinked by polydopamine (pDA) for treating second-degree burns. In a porcine model of partial thickness burns, NFDs promoted wound closure and reduced hypertrophic scarring compared to untreated burns. Analysis of NFDs in contact with the burns indicated that the dressings trap early colonizers and elicit bactericidal activity, thus creating a sterile wound bed for fibroblasts migration and re-epithelialization. In support of these observations, in porcine models of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus colonized partial thickness burns, NFDs decreased bacterial bioburden and promoted wound closure and re-epithelialization. NFDs displayed superior clinical outcome than standard-of-care silver dressings. The excellent biocompatibility and antimicrobial efficacy of the newly developed dressings in pre-clinical models demonstrate its potential for clinical use to manage infected wounds without compromising tissue regeneration.

Slippery and Wear-Resistant Surfaces Enabled by Interface Engineered Graphene

Friction and wear remain the primary cause of mechanical energy dissipation and system failure. Recent studies reveal graphene as a powerful solid lubricant to combat friction and wear. Most of these studies have focused on nanoscale tribology and have been limited to a few specific surfaces. Here, we uncover many unknown aspects of graphene's contact-sliding at micro- and macroscopic tribo-scales over a broader range of surfaces. We discover that graphene's performance reduces for surfaces with increasing roughness. To overcome this, we introduce a new type of graphene/silicon nitride (SiN_x, 3 nm) bilayer overcoats that exhibit superior performance compared to native graphene sheets (mono and bilayer), that is, display the lowest microscale friction and wear on a range of tribologically poor flat surfaces. More importantly, two-layer graphene/SiN_x bilayer lubricant (<4 nm in total thickness) shows the highest macroscale wear durability on tape-head (topologically variant surface) that exceeds most previous thicker (∼7-100 nm) overcoats. Detailed nanoscale characterization and atomistic simulations explain the origin of the reduced friction and wear arising from these nanoscale coatings. Overall, this study demonstrates that engineered graphene-based coatings can outperform conventional coatings in a number of technologies.

Boosting contact sliding and wear protection via atomic intermixing and tailoring of nanoscale interfaces

Friction and wear cause energy wastage and system failure. Usually, thicker overcoats serve to combat such tribological concerns, but in many contact sliding systems, their large thickness hinders active components of the systems, degrades functionality, and constitutes a major barrier for technological developments. While sub-10-nm overcoats are of key interest, traditional overcoats suffer from rapid wear and degradation at this thickness regime. Using an enhanced atomic intermixing approach, we develop a ~7- to 8-nm-thick carbon/silicon nitride (C/SiN _x ) multilayer overcoat demonstrating extremely high wear resistance and low friction at all tribological length scales, yielding ~2 to 10 times better macroscale wear durability than previously reported thicker (~20 to 100 nm) overcoats on tape drive heads. We report the discovery of many fundamental parameters that govern contact sliding and reveal how tuning atomic intermixing at interfaces and varying carbon and SiN _x thicknesses strongly affect friction and wear, which are crucial for advancing numerous technologies.

Antimicrobial quaternary ammonium organosilane cross-linked nanofibrous collagen scaffolds for tissue engineering

Introduction

In search for cross-linkers with multifunctional characteristics, the present work investigated the utility of quaternary ammonium organosilane (QOS) as a potential cross-linker for electrospun collagen nanofibers. We hypothesized that the quaternary ammonium ions improve the electrospinnability by reducing the surface tension and confer antimicrobial properties, while the formation of siloxane after alkaline hydrolysis could cross-link collagen and stimulate cell proliferation.

Materials and methods

QOS collagen nanofibers were electrospun by incorporating various concentrations of QOS (0.1%–10% w/w) and were cross-linked in situ after exposure to ammonium carbonate. The QOS cross-linked scaffolds were characterized and their biological properties were evaluated in terms of their biocompatibility, cellular adhesion and metabolic activity for primary human dermal fibroblasts and human fetal osteoblasts.

Results and discussion

The study revealed that 1) QOS cross-linking increased the flexibility of otherwise rigid collagen nanofibers and improved the thermal stability; 2) QOS cross-linked mats displayed potent antibacterial activity and 3) the biocompatibility of the composite mats depended on the amount of QOS present in dope solution – at low QOS concentrations (0.1% w/w), the mats promoted mammalian cell proliferation and growth, whereas at higher QOS concentrations, cytotoxic effect was observed.

Conclusion

This study demonstrates that QOS cross-linked mats possess anti-infective properties and confer niches for cellular growth and proliferation, thus offering a useful approach, which is important for hard and soft tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Superior wear resistance and low friction in hybrid ultrathin silicon nitride/carbon films: synergy of the interfacial chemistry and carbon microstructure

Amorphous carbon-based films are commonly investigated as protective nanocoatings in macro- to nano-scale devices due to their exceptional tribological and mechanical properties. However, with further device miniaturization where even thinner coatings are required, the wear durability of the nanocoating rapidly degrades at the expense of lower thickness. Here we discover that for sub-10 nm coating thicknesses, a hybrid bi-layer film structure, comprising a high sp³-bonded amorphous carbon top layer and a silicon nitride (SiN_x) bottom layer, consistently outperforms its single-layer amorphous carbon counterpart in terms of wear durability on a commercial tape drive head, while exhibiting low, stable friction and excellent wear resistance on a flat ceramic substrate. The superior performance of the hybrid film is attributed to the constructive synergy of the sp³-rich carbon microstructure and an enhanced interfacial chemistry arising from additional interfacial bonding. Moreover, a high energy C⁺ ion treatment step, introduced either directly to the substrate or to the SiN_x layer before carbon deposition, also aids in increasing atomic mixing that contributes to further improvement in the wear resistance. This study highlights the importance of both the carbon microstructure and interfacial chemistry in the design of wear-durable nanocoatings at few-nanometer thicknesses, particularly for aggressive wear conditions.

Latent Oxidative Polymerization of Catecholamines as Potential Cross-linkers for Biocompatible and Multifunctional Biopolymer Scaffolds

Electrospinning of naturally occurring biopolymers for biological applications requires postspinning cross-linking for endurance in protease-rich microenvironments and prevention of rapid dissolution. The most commonly used cross-linkers often generate cytotoxic byproducts, which necessitate high concentrations or time-consuming procedures. Herein, we report the addition of "safe" catecholamine cross-linkers to collagen or gelatin dope solutions followed by electrospinning yielded junction-containing nanofibrous mats. Subsequent in situ oxidative polymerization of the catecholamines increased the density of soldered junctions and maintained the porous nanofiber architecture. This protocol imparted photoluminescence to the biopolymers, a smooth noncytotoxic coating, and good mechanical/structural stability in aqueous solutions. The utility of our approach was demonstrated by the preparation of durable antimicrobial wound dressings and mineralized osteoconductive scaffolds via peptide antibiotics and calcium chloride (CaCl₂) incorporation into the dope solutions. The mineralized composite mats consist of amorphous calcium carbonate that enhanced the osteoblasts cell proliferation, differentiation, and expression of important osteogenic marker proteins. In proof-of-concept experiments, antibiotic-loaded mats displayed superior antimicrobial properties relative to silver (Ag)-based dressings, and accelerated wound healing in a porcine deep dermal burn injury model.

Atomic Scale Interface Manipulation, Structural Engineering, and Their Impact on Ultrathin Carbon Films in Controlling Wear, Friction, and Corrosion

Reducing friction, wear, and corrosion of diverse materials/devices using <2 nm thick protective carbon films remains challenging, which limits the developments of many technologies, such as magnetic data storage systems. Here, we present a novel approach based on atomic scale interface manipulation to engineer and control the friction, wear, corrosion, and structural characteristics of 0.7-1.7 nm carbon-based films on CoCrPt:oxide-based magnetic media. We demonstrate that when an atomically thin (∼0.5 nm) chromium nitride (CrNx) layer is sandwiched between the magnetic media and an ultrathin carbon overlayer (1.2 nm), it modifies the film-substrate interface, creates various types of interfacial bonding, increases the interfacial adhesion, and tunes the structure of carbon in terms of its sp(3) bonding. These contribute to its remarkable functional properties, such as stable and lowest coefficient of friction (∼0.15-0.2), highest wear resistance and better corrosion resistance despite being only ∼1.7 nm thick, surpassing those of ∼2.7 nm thick current commercial carbon overcoat (COC) and other overcoats in this work. While this approach has direct implications for advancing current magnetic storage technology with its ultralow thickness, it can also be applied to advance the protective and barrier capabilities of other ultrathin materials for associated technologies.

Multifunctional Polyphenols- and Catecholamines-Based Self-Defensive Films for Health Care Applications

In an era of relentless evolution of antimicrobial resistance, there is an increasing demand for the development of efficient antimicrobial coatings or surfaces for food, biomedical, and industrial applications. This study reports the laccase-catalyzed room-temperature synthesis of mechanically robust, thermally stable, broad spectrum antimicrobial films employing interfacial interactions between poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA, and 14 naturally occurring catecholamines and polyphenols. The oxidative products of catecholamines and polyphenols reinforce the PVA films and also alter their surface and bulk properties. Among the catecholamines-reinforced films, optimum surface and bulk properties can be achieved by the oxidative products of epinephrine. For polyphenols, structure-property correlation reveals an increase in surface roughness and elasticity of PVA films with increasing number of phenolic groups in the precursors. Interestingly, PVA films reinforced with oxidized/polymerized products of pyrogallol (PG) and epinephrine (EP) display potent antimicrobial activity against pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains, whereas hydroquinone (HQ)-reinforced PVA films display excellent antimicrobial properties against Gram-positive bacteria only. We further demonstrate that HQ and PG films retain their antimicrobial efficacy after steam sterilization. With an increasing trend of giving value to natural and renewable resources, our results have the potential as durable self-defensive antimicrobial surfaces/films for advanced healthcare and industrial applications.

Structurally Driven Enhancement of Resonant Tunneling and Nanomechanical Properties in Diamond-like Carbon Superlattices

We report nitrogen-induced enhanced electron tunnel transport and improved nanomechanical properties in band gap-modulated nitrogen doped DLC (N-DLC) quantum superlattice (QSL) structures. The electrical characteristics of such superlattice devices revealed negative differential resistance (NDR) behavior. The interpretation of these measurements is supported by 1D tight binding calculations of disordered superlattice structures (chains), which include bond alternation in sp(3)-hybridized regions. Tandem theoretical and experimental analysis shows improved tunnel transport, which can be ascribed to nitrogen-driven structural modification of the N-DLC QSL structures, especially the increased sp(2) clustering that provides additional conduction paths throughout the network. The introduction of nitrogen also improved the nanomechanical properties, resulting in enhanced elastic recovery, hardness, and elastic modulus, which is unusual but is most likely due to the onset of cross-linking of the network. Moreover, the materials' stress of N-DLC QSL structures was reduced with the nitrogen doping. In general, the combination of enhanced electron tunnel transport and nanomechanical properties in N-DLC QSL structures/devices can open a platform for the development of a new class of cost-effective and mechanically robust advanced electronic devices for a wide range of applications.

Probing the role of carbon microstructure on the thermal stability and performance of ultrathin (<2 nm) overcoats on L10 FePt media for heat-assisted magnetic recording

An understanding of the factors influencing the thermal stability of ultrathin carbon overcoats (COCs) is crucial for their application in heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) at densities ≥ 1 Tb/in(2). Two types of non-hydrogenated ultrathin (∼1.5 nm) COCs were investigated after being subjected to laser-induced localized heating (at temperatures > 700 K) as envisaged in HAMR. Filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA)-processed carbon with tuned C(+) ion energies of 350 eV followed by 90 eV provides significantly higher sp(3) C-C hybridization than magnetron sputter deposition even at very low thicknesses of ∼1.5 nm. As a result, the FCVA-deposited ultrathin carbon overcoats displayed excellent thermal stability along with improved wear and corrosion resistance. On the other hand, the sputtered carbon exhibited carbon loss and topographical and structural changes after laser irradiation owing to lower sp(3) hybridization. Therefore, this study highlights the pivotal role of carbon microstructure, primarily sp(3) hybridization, in non-hydrogenated carbon overcoats to maintain excellent thermal stability during the recurring high-temperature cycles in a HAMR process.

Understanding the role of nitrogen in plasma-assisted surface modification of magnetic recording media with and without ultrathin carbon overcoats

A novel scheme of pre-surface modification of media using mixed argon-nitrogen plasma is proposed to improve the protection performance of 1.5 nm carbon overcoats (COC) on media produced by a facile pulsed DC sputtering technique. We observe stable and lower friction, higher wear resistance, higher oxidation resistance, and lower surface polarity for the media sample modified in 70%Ar + 30%N2 plasma and possessing 1.5 nm COC as compared to samples prepared using gaseous compositions of 100%Ar and 50%Ar + 50%N2 with 1.5 nm COC. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results suggest that the surface modification process does not affect the microstructure of the grown COC. Instead, the improved tribological, corrosion-resistant and oxidation-resistant characteristics after 70%Ar + 30%N2 plasma-assisted modification can be attributed to, firstly, the enrichment in surface and interfacial bonding, leading to interfacial strength, and secondly, more effective removal of ambient oxygen from the media surface, leading to stronger adhesion of the COC with media, reduction of media corrosion and oxidation, and surface polarity. Moreover, the tribological, corrosion and surface properties of mixed Ar + N2 plasma treated media with 1.5 nm COCs are found to be comparable or better than ~2.7 nm thick conventional COC in commercial media.

Enhanced tribological, corrosion, and microstructural properties of an ultrathin (<2 nm) silicon nitride/carbon bilayer overcoat for high density magnetic storage

An ultrathin bilayer overcoat of silicon nitride and carbon (SiNx/C) providing low friction, high wear resistance, and high corrosion resistance is proposed for future generation hard disk media. The 16 Å thick SiNx/C overcoat consists of an atomically thin SiNx underlayer (4 Å) and a carbon layer (12 Å), fabricated by reactive magnetron sputtering and filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA), respectively. When compared with monolithic overcoats of FCVA-deposited carbon (16 Å) and sputtered SiNx (16 Å), the SiNx/C bilayer overcoat demonstrated the best tribological performance with a coefficient of friction < 0.2. Despite showing marginally less electrochemical corrosion protection than monolithic SiNx, its ability to protect the magnetic media from corrosion/oxidation was better than that of an ∼27 Å thick commercial hard disk overcoat and 16 Å thick monolithic FCVA-deposited carbon. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy analyses, it was found that the introduction of the 4 Å SiNx underlayer facilitated higher sp(3) hybridization within the carbon layer by acting as a barrier and promoted the formation of strong bonds at the SiNx/C and the SiNx/media interfaces by acting as an adhesion layer. The higher sp(3) carbon content is expected to improve the thermal stability of the overcoat, which is extremely important for future hard disk drives employing heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR).

Influence of silver incorporation on the structural and electrical properties of diamond-like carbon thin films

A simple approach is proposed for obtaining low threshold field electron emission from large area diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films by sandwiching either Ag dots or a thin Ag layer between DLC and nitrogen-containing DLC films. The introduction of silver and nitrogen is found to reduce the threshold field for emission to under 6 V/μm representing a near 46% reduction when compared with unmodified films. The reduction in the threshold field is correlated with the morphology, microstructure, interface, and bonding environment of the films. We find modifications to the structure of the DLC films through promotion of metal-induced sp2 bonding and the introduction of surface asperities, which significantly reduce the value of the threshold field. This can lead to the next-generation, large-area simple and inexpensive field emission devices.

Structural and electronic characterization of nanocrystalline diamondlike carbon thin films

The origin of low threshold field-emission (threshold field 1.25 V/μm) in nanocrystalline diamond-like carbon (nc-DLC) thin films is examined. The introduction of nitrogen and thermal annealing are both observed to change the threshold field and these changes are correlated with changes to the film microstructure. A range of different techniques including micro-Raman and infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and time-of-flight-secondary ion mass spectroscopy are used to examine the properties of the films. A comparison of the field emission properties of nc-DLC films with atomically smooth amorphous DLC (a-DLC) films reveals that nc-DLC films have lower threshold fields. Our results show that nc-DLC can be a good candidate for large area field emission display panels and cold cathode emission devices.

Nanostructured titanium/diamond-like carbon multilayer films: deposition, characterization, and applications

Titanium/diamond-like carbon multilayer (TDML) films were deposited using a hybrid system combining radio frequency (RF)-sputtering and RF-plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) techniques under a varied number of Ti/diamond-like carbon (DLC) bilayers from 1 to 4, at high base pressure of 1 × 10(-3) Torr. The multilayer approach was used to create unique structures such as nanospheres and nanorods in TDML films, which is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and explained by a hypothetical model. Surface composition was evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), whereas energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometer (ToF-SIMS) measurements were performed to investigate the bulk composition. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to evaluate the phase and crystallinity of the deposited TDML films. Residual stress in these films was found to be significantly low. These TDML films were found to have excellent nanomechanical properties with maximum hardness of 41.2 GPa. In addition, various nanomechanical parameters were calculated and correlated with each other. Owing to metallic interfacial layer of Ti in multilayer films, the optical properties, electrical properties, and photoluminescence were improved significantly. Due to versatile nanomechanical properties and biocompatibility of DLC and DLC based films, these TDML films may also find applications in biomedical science.
