PURE vs. mixed clear cell ovarian carcinomas: Is there any impact on survival? Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol 2024; 296:321-326. [PMID: 38518487 DOI: 10.1016/j.ejogrb.2024.03.021] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/18/2023] [Revised: 02/08/2024] [Accepted: 03/17/2024] [Indexed: 03/24/2024]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our primary aim in this study is to define the clinical characteristics of patients with clear-cell ovarian carcinoma and evaluate the prognostic factors affecting survival. STUDY DESIGN Records of 85 patients, operated between 2000 and 2018, for an adnexal mass and whose final pathology reported clear cell ovarian carcinoma were reviewed. The study considered demographic data, clinical characteristics of the patients, as well as pure and mixed-type clear cell histology. The patients' follow-up time, disease-free and overall survival recorded. The primary outcomes were disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). RESULTS The median age of the patients at diagnosis was 52. In 64.7 % of the cases, clear cell histology was pure, while the others (35.3 %) were mixed. Patients with ovarian endometriosis constituted 27.1 % of the whole population. The median OS for the entire population was 92 months (95 %CI:72-124). On univariate and multivariate analyses, advanced age was found to have a significant independent impact on OS and DFS (p < 0.05) and, was associated with a worse prognosis. Also, the multivariate analyses showed that the presence of endometriosis has a significant independent impact on OS (p < 0.05). When examining the relationship between the histological origin (mixed vs. pure) and 5-year survival, the mixed type showed longer OS and DFS rates (76.8 % vs. 69.8 %, 61.5 % vs. 53.8 %), the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION This retrospective study showed that although mixed type histological origin was associated with higher OS and DFS rates compared to pure type in patients with CCOC, the difference was not statistically significant. Advanced age and the presence of endometriosis was found to have a significant independent effect on OS and DFS and was associated with a worse prognosis. Overall, this study provides useful insights into the clinical characteristics of patients with CCOC and identifies important prognostic factors affecting survival.

Abstract
This paper aims to elucidate the differentially coexpressed genes, their potential mechanisms, and possible drug targets in low-grade invasive serous ovarian carcinoma (LGSC) in terms of the biologic continuity of normal, borderline, and malignant LGSC. We performed a bioinformatics analysis, integrating datasets generated using the GPL570 platform from different studies from the GEO database to identify changes in this transition, gene expression, drug targets, and their relationships with tumor microenvironmental characteristics. In the transition from ovarian epithelial cells to the serous borderline, the FGFR3 gene in the "Estrogen Response Late" pathway, the ITGB2 gene in the "Cell Adhesion Molecule", the CD74 gene in the "Regulation of Cell Migration", and the IGF1 gene in the "Xenobiotic Metabolism" pathway were upregulated in the transition from borderline to LGSC. The ERBB4 gene in "Proteoglycan in Cancer", the AR gene in "Pathways in Cancer" and "Estrogen Response Early" pathways, were upregulated in the transition from ovarian epithelial cells to LGSC. In addition, SPP1 and ITGB2 genes were correlated with macrophage infiltration in the LGSC group. This research provides a valuable framework for the development of personalized therapeutic approaches in the context of LGSC, with the aim of improving patient outcomes and quality of life. Furthermore, the main goal of the current study is a preliminary study designed to generate in silico inferences, and it is also important to note that subsequent in vitro and in vivo studies will be necessary to confirm the results before considering these results as fully reliable.

Comparison of kinesiophobia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. EUROPEAN REVIEW FOR MEDICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL SCIENCES 2023; 27:11508-11516. [PMID: 38095398 DOI: 10.26355/eurrev_202312_34589] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 12/18/2023]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patients with rheumatic disease often experience arthritis and chronic joint pain, which can lead them to avoid movement, known as kinesiophobia. This may result in decreased mobility and endurance, as well as social isolation and depression. This study aimed to assess and compare the prevalence of kinesiophobia among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and its association with disease activity, functional status, fear of falling, and fatigue. PATIENTS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with 124 RA, 76 SLE patients, and 87 healthy controls. The tampa kinesiophobia scale (TKS) was used to assess kinesiophobia. The disease activity was assessed using Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS28) in RA, and systemic lupus erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) in SLE patients. The Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) was used to assess functional status, the Falls Efficacy Scale International (FES-I) was used to assess fear of falling, and the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) was used to assess fatigue levels. RESULTS Kinesiophobia was significantly more prevalent in RA patients compared to SLE patients [77.4% vs. 63.2%, odds ratio (OR): 2, 95% CI: 1.07-3.75; p<0.05]. The mean TKS score was 41.42±6.95 in RA patients, and 37.84±8.85 in SLE (p=0.005). TKS scores were positively correlated with DAS28 in RA patients; however, no correlation was found between SLEDAI-2K in SLE patients. A positive correlation was observed between TKS scores and the HAQ, FSS, and FES-I, both in RA and SLE patients. CONCLUSIONS RA patients exhibited significantly higher kinesiophobia scores compared to SLE patients. The higher rate of kinesiophobia levels in RA patients compared to SLE patients suggests an association between kinesiophobia and the more destructive course of RA, indicating that tight control of the disease is important. Kinesiophobia was associated with functional impairment, fear of falling, and fatigue. Timely identification and intervention for patients with kinesiophobia are essential to prevent progression, mitigate long-term consequences, and maintain functional capacity.

Abstract
After revealing the anti-cancer properties of boron, which is included in the category of essential elements for human health by the World Health Organization, the therapeutic potential of boron compounds has been begun to be evaluated, and its molecular effect mechanisms have still been among the research subjects. In ovarian cancer, mutations or amplifications frequently occur in the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway components, and dysregulation of this pathway is shown among the causes of treatment failure. In the present study, it was aimed to investigate the anti-cancer properties of boron-containing DPD in SKOV3 cells, which is an epithelial ovarian cancer model, through PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. The cytotoxic activity of DPD in SKOV3 cells was evaluated by WST-1 test, apoptotic effect by Annexin V and JC-1 test. The gene expressions associated with PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway were determined by real-time qRT-PCR. In SKOV3 cells, the IC50 value of DPD was found to be 6.7 mM, 5.6 mM, and 5.2 mM at 24th, 48th and 72nd hour, respectively. Compared with the untreated control group, DPD treatment was found to induce apoptosis 2.6-fold and increase mitochondrial membrane depolarization 4.5-fold. DPD treatment was found to downregulate PIK3CA, PIK3CG, AKT2, IGF1, IRS1, MAPK3, HIF-1, VEGFC, CAB39, CAB39L, STRADB, PRKAB2, PRKAG3, TELO2, RICTOR, MLST8, and EIF4B genes and upregulate TP53, GSK3B, FKBP8, TSC2, ULK1, and ULK2 genes. These results draw attention to the therapeutic potential of DPD, which is frequently exposed in daily life, in epithelial ovarian cancer and show that it can be a candidate compound in combination with chemotherapeutics.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate T-cell receptor (TCR) changes in ovarian carcinoma (OC). The study included 24 malignant and 23 benign adnexal masses. DNA was isolated from ovarian samples. Multiplex PCR was used to determine T-cell gene clonality. PCR products were loaded onto polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and imaged. The relationship between prognostic parameters and T-cell rearrangement was evaluated. In the study group (SG), TCRB-B positivity was higher than control group (CG) and TCRD receptor positivity was higher in CG. In SG, TCRG-B levels were higher in patients with stage I-II tumours compared to stage III. TCRG-B receptor was higher in patients with overall survival of 36 months and above. In our study, subgroups of TCRs were analysed in OC. According to our findings, significant differences in TCRB-B and TCRD subgroups may be applied to immune therapies. Understanding of TCR pathways will provide new treatment approaches in OC.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? Ovarian cancer is the most challenging kind of gynaecologic cancer. Although the main route of spread is direct invasion and peritoneal spread in the abdominal cavity, lymphatic invasion is also very important. Recent studies put forward that immunological mechanisms play crucial role in ovarian cancer. CD3 and CD8 positive lymphocyte infiltration in ovarian tumour is related with better prognosis where, FoxP3 positive lymphocyte infiltration is a predictor of poor survival. Also, immune checkpoints and inhibitors are important topics in ovarian cancer. What the results of this study add? Despite all the improvements and studies regarding immune system and ovarian cancer, the role T-cell receptor (TCR) subtypes is not clear and there are very few number of studies in this area. This is one of the first studies that describe the rearrangement of TCR subtypes between normal ovarian tissue and ovarian cancer tissue. What the implications are of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Understanding the role of TCR subtypes has a key role because studies about lymphocyte infiltration in ovarian cancer varies from region to region in the world and same type of lymphocytes has different effects in different studies. Further studies on TCR subtypes may elucidate us about the behaviour of lymphocytes. Additionally, these receptor may be targeted if their roles are better understood.

Abstract
Poly(acrylic acid/Kryptofix 23-Dimethacrylate) superabsorbent polymer [P (AA/Kry23-DM) SAP] was synthesized by solution polymerization to remove Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cr, and Fe ions in water and improve the quality of the water. Kry23-DM cross-linker (1,4,7,13,16-Pentaoxa-10,19 diazo cyclohexene icosane di methacrylate) was synthesized using Kry23 and methacryloyl chloride. The characterization of the molecules was done by FTIR, TGA, DSC, and SEM techniques. The effects of parameters such as pH, concentration, and the metal ion interaction on the heavy metal ions uptaking of SAP was investigated. It was observed that P (AA/Kry23-DM) SAP has maximum water absorption, and the absorption increases with the pH increase. Adsorption rates and sorption capacity, desorption ratios, competitive sorption (qcs), and distribution coefficient (log D) of P(AA/Kry23-DM) SAP were studied as a function of time and pH with the heavy metal ion concentration. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms of the P (AA/Kry23-DM) SAP were investigated to verify the metal uptake. Molecular mechanic (MM2), Assisted Model Building with Energy Refinement (AMBER), and optimized potentials for liquid simulations (OPLS) methods. were used in quantum chemical calculations for the conformational analysis of the cross-linker and the SAP. ΔH0f calculations of the cross-linker and the superabsorbent were made using Austin Model 1(AM1) method.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the mental health of Turkish nursing students and the stress experienced during their education, their ways of coping, self-esteem, social support and individual factors. BACKGROUND Studies on nursing students have shown that students who were not in possession of effective coping strategies were at risk of presenting psychiatric symptoms when under stressful conditions. METHODS This was a cross-sectional, case-control study. The sample consisted of 516 nursing students who were studying in an undergraduate program in Turkey. Participants provided data on sociodemographic characteristics by completing the Nursing Education Stress Scale, Coping Behavior Inventory for Nursing Students, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the General Health Questionnaire. RESULTS The main factors which were considered to affect the mental health of nursing students, including "total stress" and "self-esteem" scores, "general health" evaluation, "satisfaction with school life" and "presence of a negative event within the last year", were included in all models of the General Health Questionnaire analysis. Analysis of the data indicated that these factors had strong relationship with mental health of the nursing students. DISCUSSION It is recommended that the mental health of students be monitored throughout the nursing education period and that preventive practices should be established in order to forestall mental health problems amongst nursing students. CONCLUSION The stress levels of nursing students should be monitored in order to facilitate their ability to cope with stressful situations during their training, and components for coping with stress should be included in the curricula of nursing departments.

Abstract
Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a glycoprotein commonly used in the field of medicine to treat neutropenia. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor has also crucial roles in ameliorating the ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in particular tissues. In this study, we aimed to investigate the protective effect of G-CSF on ovarian damage in experimental ovarian I/R injury. Thirty adult female rats were used. Rats were separated randomly into 5 groups; Group 1: sham group (abdominal wall was opened and closed surgically), Group 2: torsion group with 3-hour ischemia using vascular clips. Group 3: torsion + G-CSF group with 3-hour ischemia 30 minutes after the administration intraperitoneal (i.p.) of 100 µg/kg of G-CSF. Group 4: torsion-detorsion group with 3 hour ischemia and 3 hour reperfusion. Group 5: torsion-detorsion + G-CSF group with 3 hour ischemia followed by 100 µg/kg of G-CSF i.p. administration 30 minutes prior to 3 hour of detorsion/reperfusion. Ovarian tissue damage was scored on histopathology. Ovarian tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) was measured biochemically. In comparison with the sham group, both the torsion and torsion-detorsion groups had significantly higher scores for follicular degeneration, vascular congestion, edema, hemorrhage, and leukocyte infiltration (P < .05). When compared group torsion-detorsion + G-CSF to group torsion-detorsion, parameters aforementioned significantly decreased in group torsion-detorsion + G-CSF (P < .05). Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor has also decreased MDA levels notably both in the torsion + G-CSF and torsion-detorsion + G-CSF groups (P < .05, P < .01). Our experimental study suggests that G-CSF can be a novel agent for the treatment of ovarian I/R injury.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this study, we aimed to describe the real-life practice outcomes of pertuzumab-trastuzumab-taxane (PTT) combination in visceral organ metastatic, trastuzumab-naive breast cancer (BC) patients. METHODS This study was conducted by Turkish Oncology Group and included 317 patients' data from 36 centers. RESULTS Median age was 51 (22-82). Median PFS was 28.5 months, while median OS was 40.3 months. Patients with brain metastases (n: 13, 4.1%) had worse PFS (16.8 m vs. 28.5 m; p = 0.002) and OS (26.7 m vs. 40.3 m; p = 0.009). Patients older than 65 years of age (n: 42, 13.2%) had significantly lower OS results (19.8 m vs. 40.3 m; p = 0.01). Two hundred sixty-eight patients (86.7%) received docetaxel while 37 patients (11.7%) received paclitaxel. PFS and OS were similar between taxane groups. In eight patients (2.5%), 5-40% ejection fraction decrement from baseline was detected without any clinical sign of heart failure. CONCLUSIONS Our RLP trial included only visceral metastatic, trastuzumab-naïve BC patients including cases with brain involvement who received PTT combination in the first-line treatment. Regardless of negative prognostic characteristics, our results are in parallel with pivotal trial. Further strategies for brain metastasis should be developed to improve outcomes despite encouraging results with PTT treatment. Taxane selection can be personalized and endocrine maintenance may further improve outcomes after taxanes were discontinued. To our knowledge, this is the largest scale real-life clinical practice study of pertuzumab-trastuzumab-taxane therapy to date.

Ubiquitin-Proteasome Axis, Especially Ubiquitin-Specific Protease-17 ( USP17) Gene Family, is a Potential Target for Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition in High-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer. Reprod Sci 2018; 26:794-805. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate gene expression differences and related functions between primary tumor, malignant cells in ascites, and metastatic peritoneal implant in high-grade serous ovarian cancer. METHODS Biopsies from primary tumor, peritoneal implant, and ascites were collected from 10 patients operated primarily for high-grade, advanced-staged serous ovarian cancer. Total RNA isolation was performed from collected tissue biopsy and fluid samples, and RNA expression profile was measured. Messenger RNA expression profiles of 3 different groups were compared. Functional analyses of candidate genes were carried out by gene ontology and pathway analysis. RESULTS There were significant differences in the expression of 5 genes between primary tumor and peritoneal implant, 979 genes between primary tumor and malignant cells in ascites, and 649 genes between peritoneal implant and malignant cells in ascites. Three commonly enriched gene ontology functions between "primary tumor and malignant cells in the ascites" and "peritoneal implant and malignant cells in the ascites" were protein deubiquitination, ubiquitin-dependent protein catabolism, and apoptotic processes. All genes related to these functions belonged to USP17 gene family. CONCLUSION Gene expression difference between primary tumor and the peritoneal implant is not as much as the difference between primary tumor and free cells in the ascites. These results show that malignant cells in the ascites return into its genetic origin after they invade on the peritoneum. Significantly increased expression of DUB-enzyme genes, SNAR gene family, and ribosomal pathway genes in epithelial-mesenchymal transition suggests that this regulation is ubiquitin-proteasome dependent. Especially, this is the first study that offers USP17 as a potential target for epithelial-mesenchymal transition.

Abstract
AIMS The objective of this study is to identify the diagnostic performance of three-dimensional transvaginal ultrasonography (3D-US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting myometrial, lower uterine segment and/or cervical invasion in endometrial cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this prospective study, 40 patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer were performed 3D-US and MRI, preoperatively. Deep myometrial, lower uterine segment and cervical invasion were evaluated subjectively and results were compared with the final histology as a gold standard. RESULTS Diagnostic accuracy of 3D-US for detecting deep myometrial, lower uterine segment and cervical invasion were 87.5%, 80% and 85%, respectively. The same results for MRI were 75%, 65% and 70%, respectively. For deep myometrial, lower uterine segment and/or cervical invasion in endometrial cancer, 3D-US had higher sensitivity, specificity, negative and positive predictive value and accuracy than MRI. The combination of these two imaging techniques had an increased sensitivity of detecting all parameters related with tumoral invasion but decreased specificity and the accuracy. CONCLUSION 3D-US had better performance in detecting myometrial, lower uterine segment and/or cervical invasion than MRI in endometrial cancer patients. Combination of these techniques was not preferred according to this study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ovarian torsion is one of the most common gynecological emergencies, which especially affects women of reproductive age. OBJECTIVES We aimed to evaluate the effect of Ginkgo biloba (GB) supplementation in ovarian ischemia/ reperfusion injury in an experimental torsion/de-torsion rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study was carried out in the Ege University Faculty of Medicine in Izmir, Turkey. Thirty mature female Sprague-Dawley albino rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: in Group 1 (control), the abdominal wall was only opened and closed; in the torsion group (Group 2), ischemia was induced for 3 h, using atraumatic vascular clips to create a torsion model; in the torsion/GB group (Group 3), the rats were given 80 mg/kg (oral gavage) of GB 30 min before torsion was induced and the torsion model was formed; in the torsion/de-torsion group (Group 4), the rats underwent 3 h of ischemia and then the vascular clips were removed and reperfusion took place for 3 h; in the torsion/de-torsion/GB group (Group 5), the rats underwent 3 h of ischemia followed by GB (oral gavage) 30 min prior to a 3-h reperfusion period. Ovarian tissue damage was evaluated by a histopathological scoring system. Ovarian tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) and plasma pentraxin-3 were measured. RESULTS In comparison with the sham group, both the torsion and torsion/de-torsion groups had significantly higher scores for follicular degeneration, vascular congestion, edema, hemorrhage, and leukocyte infiltration. Ginkgo biloba significantly decreased these scores in both groups. Ovarian malondialdehyde and plasma pentraxin 3 were significantly higher both in the torsion and torsion/de-torsion groups compared with the sham group. Ginkgo biloba decreased these levels significantly both in the torsion/GB and torsion/de-torsion/GB groups. CONCLUSIONS Supplementing GB during a surgical procedure decreases ischemia/reperfusion injury to an ovary in an experimental rat model based on histopathological parameters, tissue malondialdehyde, and plasma pentraxin-3 levels.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine how alexithymia affects the perception of illness in patients with cancer. This was a descriptive study conducted at the Atatürk University Health, Research and Practice Hospital and the Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital's Medical Oncology Clinic and Chemotherapy Unit. The study data were collected between July 2013 and January 2014. In total, data were collected from 283 patients with cancer. The data were collected using questionnaires enquiring about demographic and medical information: the IPQ and TAS-20. The study concluded that 50.5% of the participating patients had alexithymia. It was found that the alexithymic patients with cancer perceived the negative outcomes of their illness more strongly, and their negative feelings about the illness were more intense. This study suggests that further research should be carried out on alexithymia in patients with cancer and that their positive beliefs about the illness could be enhanced using psychosocial interventions.

The Impact of Surgical Staging on the Prognosis of Mucinous Borderline Tumors of the Ovaries: A Multicenter Study. Anticancer Res 2017; 37:5609-5616. [PMID: 28982877 DOI: 10.21873/anticanres.11995] [Citation(s) in RCA: 4] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.6] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/27/2017] [Revised: 09/18/2017] [Accepted: 09/19/2017] [Indexed: 01/30/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM The purpose of this study was to prove the effect of complete surgical staging of patients with mucinous borderline ovarian tumors (mBOTs) especially appendectomy on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). PATIENTS AND METHODS The database of 14 gynecological oncology departments from Turkey and Germany were comprehensively searched for women who underwent primary surgery for an ovarian tumor between January 1, 1998, and December 31, 2015, and whose final diagnosis was mBOT. RESULTS A total of 364 patients with mBOT with a median age of 43.1 years were included in this analysis. The median OS of all patients was 53.1 months. The majority of cases had Stage IA (78.6%). In univariate and multivariate analyses, radical surgery, omentectomy, appendectomy, lymphadenectomy, and adding adjuvant chemotherapy were not independent prognostic factors for PFS and OS. Furthermore, FIGO stage (≥IC vs. <IC), radical surgery, and staging surgery were not independent risk factors for recurrence of mBOTs. Finally, abnormal macroscopic appendix and FIGO stage (≥IC vs. <IC) were independent risk factors for appendiceal involvement (p=0.032). CONCLUSION Patients with conservative surgery do not have higher recurrence rates. Fertility-sparing surgery should be considered in the reproductive age group. Detailed surgical staging including lymphadenectomy, appendectomy, and omentectomy does not have an impact on survival rates.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of lymphocyte infiltration on prognostic parameters, recurrence and survival in ovarian cancer. STUDY DESIGN Sixty-two patients who were primarily operated for epithelial ovarian carcinoma between 1997 and 2008 were included. CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20 and FoxP3 expressions were evaluated immunohistochemically on sections obtained from paraffin-embedded tissues. RESULTS Median follow up was 87 months. In whole cohort, CD3+ and CD8+ T lymphocyte infiltrations were significantly higher in patients with high-grade tumors, advanced stage tumors and the patients with omental metastasis (for CD3 p=0.0001, p=0.029, p=0.016; for CD8 p=0.044, p=0.002, p=0.046, respectively). DFS was significantly lower among patients with CD8+ T lymphocytes with regard to patients who did not have CD8+ T lymphocyte infiltration (p=0.028). In univariate analysis, presence of CD8 cytotoxic T lymphocyte infiltration (p=0.03), stage (0.0001), tumor grade (p=0.007), omental metastasis (p=0.0001) and lymph node metastasis (p=0.0001) were significant risk factors for recurrence. But in multivariate analysis, only stage [HR: 116.6 (95% CI: 13.09-1039.45) (p=0.0001)] was found as an independent risk factor for recurrence. CONCLUSION CD3+ and CD8+ T lymphocyte infiltrations were related with advanced stage, high-grade tumor and the omental metastasis in ovarian cancer. DFS was significantly shorter in patients with CD8+ T lymphocyte infiltration. CD3+ and CD8+ T lymphocyte infiltrations were related with poor prognosis in ovarian cancer.

Abstract
In some instances conventional imaging techniques fail to differentiate meningiomas from isolated dural metastasis. This study aimed to evaluate the role of diffusion and perfusion-weighted MRI in differentiating meningiomas and dural metastasis. In this study, 14 metastasis and 26 meningiomas were involved. The imaging characteristics were analyzed using conventional MRI. Diffusion-weighted MRI was performed and ADC values were calculated from the solid components and the peritumoral edema. Perfusion-weighted MRI was performed and relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) was calculated. Student's t test was used for the statistical analysis. Dural metastasis and meningiomas could not be differentiated by qualitative assessment of conventional and diffusion-weighted MRI. The mean intratumoral and peritumoral ADC values were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The rCBV ratios for dural metastasis and meningiomas were 4.13 ± 2.32 and 7.32 ± 4.10 respectively and the difference between two was statistically significant (p = 0.003). Peritumoral rCBV ratios for dural metastasis and meningiomas were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Conventional MRI findings of dural metastasis and meningiomas may overlap in some lesions. In differentiation of these lesions diffusion-weighted MRI yields no further information additional to conventional sequences. Perfusion-weighted MRI can be useful to distinguish these lesions by demonstrating high intratumoral rCBV ratios for meningiomas and low rCBV ratios for metastasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperglycaemia in diabetic patients may lead to elevated intraocular pressure. Different reasons have been suggested in previous studies to explain the increase in intraocular pressure. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the change in intraocular pressure during oral glucose tolerance tests in diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. PATIENTS AND METHODS 51 individuals who fulfilled the inclusion criteria of the study and were scheduled for oral glucose tolerances tests based on the recommendations of World Health Organization (WHO) underwent clinical examinations. Biochemical parameters associated with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and systolic and diastolic blood pressure were also measured. A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed before the test. During the test, intraocular pressure was measured twice in the fasting state and at the first and second hours after oral glucose administration using rebound tonometry (ICARE). RESULTS The mean age of the 51 patients was 46.19±9.13 years. The participants were categorized as non-diabetic (n: 24) and diabetic (n: 27). The baseline glucose levels were higher in the diabetic patients (p<0.001). The first-hour intraocular pressures (IOP1-0) changes in the right eye were significant in the diabetic and non-diabetic participants, and the first-hour intraocular pressure changes in the left eye (IOP1-0l) in the diabetic group were significant (p=0.017, p=0.017, p<0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION The relation between diabetes mellitus and glaucoma has been addressed in many studies, but no clear underlying mechanisms have been identified. In our study of diabetic and non-diabetic individuals, hyperglycaemia during an oral glucose tolerance test was found to be positively related to intraocular pressure, which suggests that hyperglycaemia may represent a possible mechanism by which elevated IOP occurs.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify the role of preoperative serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and migration inhibitor factor (MIF) in differentiation of benign and malignant adnexal masses, as well as the relationship between prognostic factors and VEGF and MIF in ovarian cancer patients. This prospective study included 41 patients who were admitted between November 2010 and March 2012. In the malignant group, there were 21 patients, and remaining 20 had benign adnexal masses. Age, CA125 levels, grade, stage, presence of ascites and the degree of cytoreduction performed were noted. There was no significant difference between two groups in preoperative serum VEGF and MIF levels (p = 0.118 and p = 0.297, respectively). CA125 levels were significantly higher in the malignant group (p < 0.0001). There was no significant difference for VEGF and MIF between the groups evaluated for tumour grade, stage, presence of ascites and degree of cytoreduction performed in the malignant group. Preoperative serum, VEGF and MIF levels are not suitable for the differentiation of malignant and benign adnexal masses, and they do not correlate with the prognostic factors of ovarian cancer in this cohort of patients.

Abstract
Biodecolorization of Congo red dye in both agar—plate and agitated liquid culture mediums by newly isolated white rot fungus Pleurotus eryngii has been studied. This fungus isolated from Tunceli—Ovacik province of Turkey. We have also examined the chemical oxygen demand reduction after decolorization under agitated liquid culture medium. For agar plate screening the decolorization capacity of P. eryngii, growth and decolorization halos were determined on saboroud dextrose agar (SDA) plates containing 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 2 g/l of Congo red. P. eryngii showed certain decolorization capacities and was able to decolorize all studied concentrations of Congo red, but not to the same extent. Our results indicated that the new isolate P. eryngii had maximum decolorization (87% at 100 mg/l initial dye concentration) and chemical oxygen demand reduction (82% at 25 mg/l initial dye concentration) activities after 7 days under agitated submerged culture conditions. This new isolate could be an effective bioremediation tool for treatment of Congo red containing textile wastewater.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of resveratrol in a rat model of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). STUDY DESIGN After PCOS model was formed by subcutaneous dihydrotestosterone pellets, rats were randomly divided into 2 groups. The first group (n = 7) was treated with 1 mL/kg/d isotonic saline and the second group (n = 7) was treated with 10 mg/kg/d resveratrol. Seven rats were taken as controls without any medication. RESULTS Our results showed (1) significant reduction in the number of antral follicle counts (P < .01); (2) significantly decreased plasma anti-Mullerian hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1 levels (P < .01 and P < .05, respectively); (3) significantly lower superoxide dismutase activity (P < .05); and (4) significantly increased glutathione peroxidase content (P < .01) following resveratrol treatment. CONCLUSION Resveratrol appears to be effective in the treatment of PCOS due to its antioxidant properties. Future clinical studies with different dosages might provide useful implementations to our practice.

Abstract
Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate whether atorvastatin can ameliorate the uterine microenvironment in diabetes mellitus. Six non-diabetic (control) and 12 diabetic mature female Sprague-Dawley albino rats were used in this study. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injections of 60 mg/kg streptozotocin, and 10 mg/kg/day of oral atorvastatin was administered for 4 weeks via orogastric tubes. The animals were euthanized, and blood samples were collected via cardiac puncture for biochemical analysis. Bilateral hysterectomy was performed for the histopathologic examination. Endometrial gland degeneration and stromal fibrosis scores concomitant with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) immunoexpressions were analyzed. The endometrial gland degeneration scores, stromal fibrosis scores and VEGF immunoexpression was significantly lower, and the EGFR immunoexpression was significantly higher in the atorvastatin-treated diabetic rats when compared to the non-treated diabetic group, suggesting that atorvastatin ameliorates the uterine microenvironment in diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the present study was to evaluate the significance of endometrial sampling in asymptomatic, bleeding-free postmenopausal women who have endometrial thickness greater or equal to 5 mm. METHODS A retrospective review was conducted of all women who underwent transvaginal ultrasonography between January 2000 and March 2009 in a menopause clinic, who were found to have an endometrial thickness of at least 5 mm and who were subjected to endometrial sampling. RESULTS Five hundred and thirty asymptomatic postmenopausal women underwent ultrasonographic evaluation with subsequent endometrial sampling. The mean endometrial stripe thickness was 8.7 mm (range: 6-26). Five cases of adenocarcinoma (0.9%) and 65 (12.2%) cases of simple/complex atypical hyperplasia were diagnosed. CONCLUSIONS In this study, 106 investigations were performed to detect one case of adenocarcinoma. Although this is a high number per case detection of endometrial adenocarcinoma, considering the rising incidence of endometrial cancer, large prospective trials with surrogate criteria for asymptomatic women are needed to investigate the importance of thickened endometrial stripe in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
The essential oil composition and in vitro antioxidant and antifungal activity of the Salvia sclarea L. from Munzur Valley in Tunceli, Turkey were evaluated in this research. The in vitro antifungal activity of ethanol, hexane and aqueous extracts of S. sclarea against pathogen fungi Epicoccum nigrum and Colletotrichum coccodes were investigated. The essential oil of aerial parts of S. sclarea was obtained by hydrodistillation and was analysed by GC and GC—MS. Total antioxidant status was determined by using Rel assay diagnostics TAS assay kit (Lot.RL024) by Multiscan FC (Thermo). 33 compounds were identified representing the 85.0% of the total oil. The most abundant components (>5%) of the S. sclarea essential oils were caryophyllene oxide (24.1%), sclareol (11.5%), spathulenol (11.4%), 1H-naphtho (2,1,6) pyran (8.6%) and b—caryophyllene (5.1%). The best antifungal and antioxidant effect was seen in ethanolic S. sclarea extract. It can be said that Salvia sclerae could be used as natural antioxidant.

Abstract
Pharmacokinetic properties of many antineoplastic agents or their metabolites change with organ dysfunction. Unfortunately, chemotherapy doses determined in phase I and II studies in patients with normal hepatic and renal reserves are not usually applicable to those with hepatic and/or renal dysfunction. Considering the high incidence of colorectal adenocarcinoma, it is not unusual for a colorectal cancer patient to be on chronic hemodialysis. We report a patient with metastatic colorectal cancer on chronic hemodialysis who tolerated weekly irinotecan at 50 mg/m2 well without significant toxicity. We briefly discuss therapeutic dose modification in such patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of resveratrol on an experimentally induced endometriosis rat model. STUDY DESIGN After endometriotic implants were surgically formed, rats were randomly divided into 2 groups as control group (saline treated, n = 6) and resveratrol group (10 mg/kg/d, n = 6). The inflammatory markers and histopathological changes were assessed at the end of the treatment period. Results Our results showed (1) significant reduction in the implant size (P < .0005); (2) significantly decreased levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the peritoneal fluid and plasma (P < .005); and monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1) in the peritoneal fluid (P < .05), (3) highly significant suppression of VEGF expression in the endometriotic tissue (P < .0005); and (4) considerable histological changes in the endometriotic foci following resveratrol treatment. CONCLUSION Resveratrol appears to be effective on the development of endometriosis through its antiangiogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. Future studies with different doses of resveratrol might provide more comprehensive results regarding the treatment of endometriosis.

Abstract
A series of ester formylhydrazones were synthesised by the reaction of alkyl imidate hydrochlorides with formyl-hydrazine. Treatment of the ester formylhydrazones with acetic acid hydrazide, isonicotinic acid hydrazide, nicotinic acid hydrazide, and 4-hydroxybenzhydrazide resulted in the formation of either 4-acylamino-4H-1,2,4-triazoles or 2,5-disubstituted 1,3,4-oxadiazoles. 3-Alkyl-4-amino-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-ones were synthesised by the reaction of the ester formylhydrazones with carbohydrazide. Some arylidenamino compounds were synthesised by the reaction of 4-amino-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-ones with several aldehydes. These compounds were characterised by elemental analyses, IR, 1H NMR, and UV spectral techniques.

Assessment of left ventricular systolic and diastolic dyssynchrony with tissue Doppler echocardiography in patients with heart failure and narrow QRS complex. Minerva Cardioangiol 2012; 60:581-591. [PMID: 23147436] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 06/01/2023]
Abstract
AIM Cardiac dyssynchrony is a well known entity in patients with wide QRS complex (>120 ms). Dyssynchrony may also cause ventricular dysfunction in heart failure patients with narrow QRS complexes. In the study, the presence and extent of cardiac dyssynchrony were investigated in patients with heart failure both with narrow and wide QRS complexes using tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE). METHODS Forty-nine patients with heart failure, were included to the study. The first group of 30 patients with a QRS duration of <120 ms (23M; mean age, 64±10.1 years) and the second group consisted of 19 patients with a QRS duration of >120 ms (12M; mean age, 65±11.6 years). In order to examine cardiac synchronization, TDE was performed. Systolic and diastolic intraventricular dyssynchrony and interventricular dyssynchrony were calculated. In order to define systolic and diastolic dyssynchrony, intraventricular delay was accepted as >60 ms, and interventricular delay was accepted as >40 ms. RESULTS Left ventricular systolic dyssynchrony was detected in 18 patients (60%) within the narrow QRS group and in 18 patients (94%) within the wide QRS group. Interventricular dyssynchrony was detected in 17 patients (56%) within the narrow QRS group and in 18 patients (94%) within the wide QRS group. For systolic dyssynchrony, correlations existed between intraventricular delay and QRS duration (r=0.48), left ventricular end diastolic diameter (r=0.62), left ventricular end systolic diameter (r=0.61), and EF (r=-0.63). Similarly, correlations existed between interventricular delay and QRS duration (r=0.58), left ventricular end diastolic diameter (r=0.65), left ventricle end systolic diameter (r=0.64), and EF (r=-0.64). CONCLUSION The present study suggested that systolic or diastolic dyssynchrony exists despite normal levels of QRS duration.

Single high dose atorvastatin does not ameliorate endothelial function and large arterial stiffness in dyslipidemic patients without atherosclerosis. EUROPEAN REVIEW FOR MEDICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL SCIENCES 2012; 16:824-828. [PMID: 22913216] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 06/01/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies show that statins have beneficial effects on atherosclerotic risk factors and markers such as flow mediated dilatation (FMD). However, studies on early effects of statins on endothelial function of non atherosclerotic humans are limited. AIM The purpose of this study was to determine whether a single high dose of atorvastatin could improve endothelial function and large arterial stiffness in statin naive dyslipidemic non-atherosclerotic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty statin naïve dyslipidemic non-atherosclerotic patients from Cardiology Outpatient Clinic were enrolled. Arterial stiffness and endothelial function of patients were evaluated by assessing the finger photoplethysmography and the flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery before and 24 hour after oral administration of 80 mg atorvastatin. RESULTS Stiffness indices and FMD 24 hours after administration of 80mg atorvastatin did not differ from baseline measurements (6.89 +/- 1.90 vs. 7.06 +/- 2.37 p : NS and 9.13 +/- 6.07 vs. 9.80 +/- 6.34 p : NS). CONCLUSIONS Although it is widely accepted that statins improve endothelial function, evidences of early effect might largely be associated with endothelial injury. Our study suggests that beneficial early effects of statins might not be applicable to patients without atherosclerosis.

Abstract
The rubella vaccine is contraindicated in pregnancy. Between July and August 2009, the Turkish Republic Ministry of Health implemented a vaccine program to eradicate rubella in women in the reproductive period. In this program, many pregnant women were also vaccinated inadvertently. In this study, 62 pregnant women applied to our clinic who were vaccinated either during pregnancy or within one month before the last menstrual period. Seventeen of them were followed until the end of the pregnancy by fetal echocardiography and detailed ultrasonography. Rubella immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG antibodies were studied in the cord blood obtained at birth. All fetuses were examined by a pediatrician, an ophthalmologist and a pediatric cardiologist. A hearing test was also performed on all neonates. No signs of congenital rubella syndrome could be found.

Abstract
We examined genetic differences of four Vitis vinifera populations (A, B, C, D) including local Kabarcik cultivar grown along an altitude gradient of 800, 900, 1000, and 1150 m above sea level in the Coruh Valley (800 m: A population; 900 m: B population; 1000 m: C population; 1150 m: D population). Leaf samples were used for both RAPD and fatty acid analysis. A total of 60 individuals with 15 individuals per population were included in this study. RAPD analyses showed various band sizes, which ranged from 250 to 3000 bp. Mean polymorphic locus ratios were determined as 96.29% considering four populations. The highest percentage of polymorphic loci (97.8%) was produced by the highest altitude. Thirty-two different fatty acids were found; linoleic acid was the most common in all four populations. According to the dendograms obtained from statistical analyses of RAPD and fatty acid profiles the populations that were close to each other in terms of geographical distance also were similar genetically.
