[PMID: 38638334 PMCID: PMC11025393 DOI: 10.3389/fphar.2023.1294315] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/14/2023] [Accepted: 12/05/2023] [Indexed: 04/20/2024] Open
Abstract
Objective Our research was performed in order to explore the effects of molecular hydrogen (H2), a novelly-established antioxidant, on the retinal degeneration in rd1 mice, an animal model of inherited retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Methods The rd1 mice were divided randomly into control and H2 intervention groups. Mice from other groups received H2 intervention in three modes, two modes of the hydrogen gas (HG) and one model of hydrogen-rich saline (HRS). At 14 days post born (P14) and P21, various indicators were detected in all mice, including eletroretinogram (ERG), fundus phography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and retinal immunotaining of microglia cells' marker, Iba1. Results The ERG amplitude in mice from the control and H2 intervention groups showed no statistical differences (p > 0.05). At P14 and P21, no significant difference in the distance from the retinal pigment epithelium to the outer plexiform layer on OCT from mice of the above two groups was found (p > 0.05). The thickness of the outer nuclear layer (ONL) in mice at P14 and P21 showed no statistical differences between the control group and the H2 intervention group (p > 0.05). In the aspect of the number of Iba1-positive cells, we did not found any significant differences between the two groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion Different forms of H2 intervention (hydrogen-rich saline and hydrogen gas) had no obvious effects on the course of retinal degeneration in rd1 mice. The specific mechanism of photoreceptor degeneration in the hereditary RP mouse model may be different, requiring different medical interventions.

Abstract
Three new species of CortinariussectionDelibuti, namely C.fibrillososalor, C.pseudosalor, and C.subtropicus are described as new to science based on morphological and phylogenetic evidences. Cortinariuspseudosalor is extremely morphologically similar to C.salor, but it differs from the latter by smaller coarsely verrucose basidiospores. Cortinariusfibrillososalor can be easily differentiated by its fibrillose pileus. The pileus of C.subtropicus becomes brown without lilac tint at maturity comparing with other members of section Delibuti. A combined dataset of ITS and LSU sequences was used for phylogenetic analysis. The phylogenetic reconstruction of section Delibuti revealed that these three new species clustered and formed independent lineages with full support respectively. A key to the three new species and related species of section Delibuti is provided in this work.

Abstract
Cortinarius sect. Camphorati consists of telamonioid species with violet basidioma, strong odor, and distinct cheilocystidia. In this study, phylogenetic analysis based on nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer region ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS) and partial nuc rDNA 28S sequences has revealed three new species of the section from southwestern China, namely, C. longicystidiatus, C. megacystidiatus, and C. paraputorius, and a newly recorded species from southwestern China, viz., C. camphoratus, supplemented by the support from calculations of genetic distances of ITS sequences. Detailed descriptions of the four species are given with photographs, and their micromorphological characteristics are statistically compared. For species delimitation within the section, the size of basidiospores, the morphology of cheilocystidia, and the associated vegetation types and tree species are informative. A key to species in section Camphorati from the Northern Hemisphere is provided, and their geographic distributions and ecology are discussed.

Reducing carbon footprints and increasing net ecosystem economic benefits through dense planting with less nitrogen in double-cropping rice systems. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2023; 891:164756. Abstract
Excessive application of nitrogen fertilization in farmland systems can cause nitrogen wastage, environmental pollution, and increase greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Dense planting is one of the efficient strategies for nitrogen fertilizer reduction within rice production. However, there are paying weak attention to the integrative effect of dense planting with less nitrogen (DPLN) on carbon footprint (CF), net ecosystem economic benefit (NEEB) and its components in double-cropping rice systems. Herein, this work aims to elucidate the effect via field experiments in double-cropping rice cultivation region with the treatments set to conventional cultivation (CK), three treatments of DPLN (DR1, 14 % nitrogen reduction and 40,000 hills per ha density increase from CK; DR2, 28 % nitrogen reduction and 80,000 hills density increase; DR3, 42 % nitrogen reduction and 120,000 hills density increase), and one treatment of no nitrogen (N0). Results showed that DPLN significantly reduced average CH4 emissions by 7.56 %-36 %, while increasing annual rice yield by 2.16 %-12.37 % compared to CK. Furthermore, the paddy ecosystem under DPLN served as a carbon sink. Compared with CK, DR3 increased gross primary productivity (GPP) by 16.04 % while decreasing direct GHG emissions by 13.1 %. The highest NEEB was observed in DR3, which was 25.38 % greater than CK and 1.04-fold higher than N0. Therefore, direct GHG emissions and carbon fixation of GPP were key contributors to CF in double-cropping rice systems. Our results verified that optimizing DPLN strategies can effectively increase economic benefits and reduce net GHG emissions. DR3 achieved an optimal synergy between reducing CF and enhancing NEEB in double-cropping rice systems.

Network-pharmacology-based research on protective effects and underlying mechanism of Shuxin decoction against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury with diabetes. World J Diabetes 2023; 14:1057-1076. [PMID: 37547579 PMCID: PMC10401449 DOI: 10.4239/wjd.v14.i7.1057] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/20/2023] [Revised: 04/14/2023] [Accepted: 05/05/2023] [Indexed: 07/12/2023] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with diabetes mellitus are at higher risk of myocardial ischemia/ reperfusion injury (MI/RI). Shuxin decoction (SXT) is a proven recipe modi-fication from the classic herbal formula "Wu-tou-chi-shi-zhi-wan" according to the traditional Chinese medicine theory. It has been successfully used to alleviate secondary MI/RI in patients with diabetes mellitus in the clinical setting. However, the underlying mechanism is still unclear.
AIM To further determine the mechanism of SXT in attenuating MI/RI associated with diabetes.
METHODS This paper presents an ensemble model combining network pharmacology and biology. The Traditional Chinese Medicine System Pharmacology Database was accessed to select key components and potential targets of the SXT. In parallel, therapeutic targets associated with MI/RI in patients with diabetes were screened from various databases including Gene Expression Omnibus, DisGeNet, Genecards, Drugbank, OMIM, and PharmGKB. The potential targets of SXT and the therapeutic targets related to MI/RI in patients with diabetes were intersected and subjected to bioinformatics analysis using the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery. The major results of bioinformatics analysis were subsequently validated by animal experiments.
RESULTS According to the hypothesis derived from bioinformatics analysis, SXT could possibly ameliorate lipid metabolism disorders and exert anti-apoptotic effects in MI/RI associated with diabetes by reducing oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL) and inhibiting the advanced glycation end products (AGE)-receptor for AGE (RAGE) signaling pathway. Subsequent animal experiments confirmed the hypothesis. The treatment with a dose of SXT (2.8 g/kg/d) resulted in a reduction in oxidized LDL, AGEs, and RAGE, and regulated the level of blood lipids. Besides, the expression of apoptosis-related proteins such as Bax and cleaved caspase 3 was down-regulated, whereas Bcl-2 expression was up-regulated. The findings indicated that SXT could inhibit myocardial apoptosis and improve cardiac function in MI/RI in diabetic rats.
CONCLUSION This study indicated the active components and underlying molecular therapeutic mechanisms of SXT in MI/RI with diabetes. Moreover, animal experiments verified that SXT could regulate the level of blood lipids, alleviate cardiomyocyte apoptosis, and improve cardiac function through the AGE-RAGE signaling pathway.

Abstract
Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), a common complication of diabetes, is defined as ventricular dysfunction in the absence of underlying heart disease. Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), including long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs), play a crucial role in the development of DCM. Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) was used to identify key modules in DCM-related pathways. DCM-related miRNA-mRNA network and DCM-related ceRNA network were constructed by miRNA-seq to identify hub genes in these modules. We identified five hub genes that are associated with the onset of DCM, including Troponin C1 (Tnnc1), Phospholamban (Pln), Fatty acid binding proteins 3 (Fabp3), Popeye domain containing 2 (Popdc2), and Tripartite Motif-containing Protein 63 (Trim63). miRNAs that target the hub genes were mainly involved in TGF-β and Wnt signaling pathways. GO BP enrichment analysis found these miRNAs were involved in the signaling of TGF-β and glucose homeostasis. Q-PCR results found the gene expressions of Pln, Fabp3, Trim63, Tnnc1, and Popdc2 were significantly increased in DCM. Our study identified five hub genes (Tnnc1, Pln, Fabp3, Popdc2, Trim63) whose associated ceRNA networks are responsible for the onset of DCM.

Abstract
With the increasing of altitude activities from low-altitude people, the study of high altitude cerebral edema (HACE) has been revived. HACE is a severe acute mountain sickness associated with exposure to hypobaric hypoxia at high altitude, often characterized by disturbance of consciousness and ataxia. As for the pathogenesis of HACE, previous studies suggested that it might be related to the disorder of cerebral blood flow, the destruction of blood-brain barrier and the injury of brain parenchyma cells caused by inflammatory factors. In recent years, studies have confirmed that the imbalance of REDOX homeostasis is also involved in the pathogenesis of HACE, which mainly leads to abnormal activation of microglia and destruction of tight junction of vascular endothelial cells through the excessive production of mitochondrial-related reactive oxygen species. Therefore, this review summarizes the role of REDOX homeostasis and the potential of the treatment of REDOX homeostasis in HACE, which is of great significance to expand the understanding of the pathogenesis of HACE. Moreover, it will also be helpful to further study the possible therapy of HACE related to the key link of REDOX homeostasis.

Increasing Planting Density and Reducing N Application Improves Yield and Grain Filling at Two Sowing Dates in Double-Cropping Rice Systems. PLANTS (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2023; 12:2298. [PMID: 37375923 DOI: 10.3390/plants12122298] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/10/2023] [Revised: 06/08/2023] [Accepted: 06/09/2023] [Indexed: 06/29/2023]
Abstract
Grain filling plays an important role in achieving high grain yield. Manipulating planting densities is recognized as a viable approach to compensate for the reduced yield caused by nitrogen reduction. Understanding the effects of nitrogen fertilization and planting density on superior and inferior grain filling is crucial to ensure grain security. Hence, double-cropping paddy field trials were conducted to investigate the effect of three nitrogen levels (N1, conventional nitrogen application; N2, 10% nitrogen reduction; N3, 20% nitrogen reduction) and three planting densities (D1, conventional planting density; D2, 20% density increase; D3, 40% density increase) on grain yield, yield formation, and grain-filling characteristics at two sowing dates (S1, a conventional sowing date, and S2, a date postponed by ten days) in 2019-2020. The results revealed that the annual yield of S1 was 8.5-14% higher than that of S2. Reducing nitrogen from N2 to N3 decreased the annual yield by 2.8-7.6%, but increasing planting densities from D1 to D3 significantly improved yield, by 6.2-19.4%. Furthermore, N2D3 had the highest yield, which was 8.7-23.8% higher than the plants that had received the other treatments. The rice yield increase was attributed to higher numbers of panicles per m2 and spikelets per panicle on the primary branches, influenced by superior grain filling. Increasing planting density and reducing nitrogen application significantly affected grain-filling weight, with the 40% density increase significantly facilitating superior and inferior grain filling with the same nitrogen level. Increasing density can improve superior grains while reducing nitrogen will decrease superior grains. These results suggest that N2D3 is an optimal strategy to increase yield and grain filling for double-cropping rice grown under two sowing-date conditions.

Abstract
In response to environmental challenges, stress is a common reaction, but dysregulation of the stress response can lead to neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression and cognitive impairment. Particularly, there is ample evidence that overexposure to mental stress can have lasting detrimental consequences for psychological health, cognitive function, and ultimately well-being. In fact, some individuals are resilient to the same stressor. A major benefit of enhancing stress resilience in at-risk groups is that it may help prevent the onset of stress-induced mental health problems. A potential therapeutic strategy for maintaining a healthy life is to address stress-induced health problems with botanicals or dietary supplements such as polyphenols. Triphala, also known as Zhe Busong decoction in Tibetan, is a well-recognized Ayurvedic polyherbal medicine comprising dried fruits from three different plant species. As a promising food-sourced phytotherapy, triphala polyphenols have been used throughout history to treat a variety of medical conditions, including brain health maintenance. Nevertheless, a comprehensive review is still lacking. Here, the primary objective of this review article is to provide an overview of the classification, safety, and pharmacokinetics of triphala polyphenols, as well as recommendations for the development of triphala polyphenols as a novel therapeutic strategy for promoting resilience in susceptible individuals. Additionally, we summarize recent advances demonstrating that triphala polyphenols are beneficial to cognitive and psychological resilience by regulating 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) receptors, gut microbiota, and antioxidant-related signaling pathways. Overall, scientific exploration of triphala polyphenols is warranted to understand their therapeutic efficacy. In addition to providing novel insights into the mechanisms of triphala polyphenols for promoting stress resilience, blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability and systemic bioavailability of triphala polyphenols also need to be improved by the research community. Moreover, well-designed clinical trials are needed to increase the scientific validity of triphala polyphenols' beneficial effects for preventing and treating cognitive impairment and psychological dysfunction.

Fatty acids and risk of dilated cardiomyopathy: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study. Front Nutr 2023; 10:1068050. Abstract
Background Previous observational studies have shown intimate associations between fatty acids (FAs) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). However, due to the confounding factors and reverse causal association found in observational epidemiological studies, the etiological explanation is not credible. Objective To exclude possible confounding factors and reverse causal associations found in observational epidemiological studies, we used the two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to verify the causal relationship between FAs and DCM risk. Method All data of 54 FAs were downloaded from the genome-wide association studies (GWAS) catalog, and the summary statistics of DCM were extracted from the HF Molecular Epidemiology for Therapeutic Targets Consortium GWAS. Two-sample MR analysis was conducted to evaluate the causal effect of FAs on DCM risk through several analytical methods, including MR-Egger, inverse variance weighting (IVW), maximum likelihood, weighted median estimator (WME), and the MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier test (MRPRESSO). Directionality tests using MR-Steiger to assess the possibility of reverse causation. Results Our analysis identified two FAs, oleic acid and fatty acid (18:1)-OH, that may have a significant causal effect on DCM. MR analyses indicated that oleic acid was suggestively associated with a heightened risk of DCM (OR = 1.291, 95%CI: 1.044-1.595, P = 0.018). As a probable metabolite of oleic acid, fatty acid (18:1)-OH has a suggestive association with a lower risk of DCM (OR = 0.402, 95%CI: 0.167-0.966, P = 0.041). The results of the directionality test suggested that there was no reverse causality between exposure and outcome (P < 0.001). In contrast, the other 52 available FAs were discovered to have no significant causal relationships with DCM (P > 0.05). Conclusion Our findings propose that oleic acid and fatty acid (18:1)-OH may have causal relationships with DCM, indicating that the risk of DCM from oleic acid may be decreased by encouraging the conversion of oleic acid to fatty acid (18:1)-OH.

Abstract
CONTEXT Developing effective drugs to treat myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion (MI/R) injury is imperative. Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have had considerable success in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Elucidating the mechanisms by which TCMs improve MI/R injury can supplement the literature on MI/R prevention and treatment. OBJECTIVE To summarise TCMs and their main protective mechanisms against MI/R injury reported over the past 40 years. METHODS Relevant literature published between 1980 and 2020 in Chinese and English was retrieved from the Web of Science, PubMed, SpringerLink, PubMed Central, Scopus, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases. Search terms included 'medicinal plants', 'myocardial ischaemia reperfusion injury', 'Chinese medicine prescriptions', 'mechanisms', 'prevention', 'treatment' and 'protection'. For inclusion in the analysis, medicinal plants had to be searchable in the China Medical Information Platform and Plant Database. RESULTS We found 71 medicinal species (from 40 families) that have been used to prevent MI/R injury, of which Compositae species (8 species) and Leguminosae species (7 species) made up the majority. Most of the effects associated with these plants are described as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Furthermore, we summarised 18 kinds of Chinese compound prescriptions, including the compound Danshen tablet and Baoxin pill, which mainly reduce oxidative stress and regulate mitochondrial energy metabolism. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS We summarised TCMs that protect against MI/R injury and their pharmacological mechanisms. This in-depth explanation of the roles of TCMs in MI/R injury protection provides a theoretical basis for the research and development of TCM-based treatment drugs.

Abstract
Many species of Inosperma cause neurotoxic poisoning in humans after consumption around the world. However, the toxic species of Inosperma and its toxin content remain unclear. In the present study, we proposed five new Inosperma species from China, namely, I. longisporum, I. nivalellum, I. sphaerobulbosum, I. squamulosobrunneum, and I. squamulosohinnuleum. Morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on three genes (ITS, nrLSU, rpb2) revealed that these taxa are independent species. A key to 17 species of Inosperma in China is provided. In addition, targeted screening for the most notorious mushroom neurotoxins, muscarine, psilocybin, ibotenic acid, and muscimol, in these five new species was performed by using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Our results show that the neurotoxin contents in these five species varied: I. sphaerobulbosum contains none of the tested neurotoxins; I. nivalellum is muscarine positive; I. longisporum and I. squamulosohinnuleum contain both ibotenic acid and muscimol, and I. squamulosobrunneum only contains muscimol; psilocybin was not detected in these five new species.

Abstract
Myocardial fibrosis is the result of abnormal healing after acute and chronic myocardial damage and is a direct cause of heart failure and cardiac insufficiency. The clinical approach is to preserve cardiac function and inhibit fibrosis through surgery aimed at dredging blood vessels. However, this strategy does not adequately address the deterioration of fibrosis and cardiac function recovery. Therefore, numerous biomaterial platforms have been developed to address the above issues. In this review, we summarize the existing biomaterial delivery and restoring platforms, In addition, we also clarify the therapeutic strategies based on biomaterial platforms, including general strategies to block the fibrosis process and new strategies to promote cellular restoring effects. The development of structures with the ability to block further fibrosis progression as well as to promote cardiomyocytes viability should be the main research interests in myocardial fibrosis, and the reestablishment of structures necessary for normal cardiac function is central to the treatment of myocardial fibrosis. Finally, the future application of biomaterials for myocardial fibrosis is also highlighted.

Abstract
The high-altitude environment is characterized by hypobaric hypoxia, low temperatures, low humidity, and high radiation, which is a natural challenge for lowland residents entering. Previous studies have confirmed the acute and chronic effects of high altitude on the cardiovascular systems of lowlanders. Abnormal cardiovascular complications, including pulmonary edema, cardiac hypertrophy and pulmonary arterial hypertension were commonly explored. Effective evaluation of cardiovascular adaptive response in high altitude can provide a basis for early warning, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of altitude diseases. At present, post-translational modifications (PTMs) of proteins are a key step to regulate their biological functions and dynamic interactions with other molecules. This process is regulated by countless enzymes called “writer, reader, and eraser,” and the performance is precisely controlled. Mutations and abnormal expression of these enzymes or their substrates have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases associated with high altitude. Although PTMs play an important regulatory role in key processes such as oxidative stress, apoptosis, proliferation, and hypoxia response, little attention has been paid to abnormal cardiovascular response at high altitude. Here, we reviewed the roles of PTMs in driving abnormal cardiovascular complications at high altitude.

The Temporal Topography of Central Serous Chorioretinopathy in the Chinchilla Rabbits Induced by Intravenous Injection of Adrenaline: An in vivo Study. Drug Des Devel Ther 2022; 16:3275-3283. [PMID: 36177348 PMCID: PMC9514269 DOI: 10.2147/dddt.s381957] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/11/2022] [Accepted: 09/09/2022] [Indexed: 11/25/2022] Open
Abstract
Purpose To explore the temporal topography of the chorioretinopathy in an animal model of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) induced by intravenous injection of adrenalin in the Chinchilla rabbits. Methods Ten Chinchilla rabbits received a daily intravenous injection of adrenaline at 0.04 mg/kg for 8 weeks. Fluorescence fundus angiography (FFA) and electroretinogram (ERG) were performed every week afterwards to see whether there was fluorescence leakage in the fundus and to evaluate the retinal function. Indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were also conducted to detect the change of choroidal vessels. Finally, the eyes of the rabbits were enucleated to make the retinal sections for histological examination with hematoxylin–eosin (HE) staining. Results Within 8 weeks of the adrenalin administration, 7 out of the 10 rabbits showed different degrees of fluorescence leakage on FFA. The leakage was more obvious during 2–3 weeks after the adrenalin administration. With the progress of disease, the leakage subsided gradually and a scar-like lesion formed. ICGA revealed the local choroidal ischemia and the dilated choroidal vessels. An obvious detachment of retina and an increased thickness of the choroid were found on OCT, which was most obvious 2 weeks after the adrenalin administration (P<0.01). ERG revealed no obvious decline of the b-wave amplitude before and after the adrenalin administration (P>0.05). A circumscribed retinal detachment, the depigmentation of retinal pigment epithelium and enlarged choroidal vessels were shown by the histological examination. Conclusion The temporal topography of the chorioretinopathy in the Chinchilla rabbits by intravenous injection of adrenaline somewhat mimicked that of the human CSC, which could enhance its application in the exploration for the pathogenesis and the therapeutic measures for human CSC.

Abstract
Russula subnigricans is the only deadly species in the genus Russula with a mortality rate of more than 50%, and Russula japonica is the most common poisonous species, making rapid species identification in mushroom poisoning incidents extremely important. The main objective of this study was to develop a rapid, specific, sensitive, and simple loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for the detection of R. subnigricans and R. japonica. Two sets of species-specific LAMP primers targeting internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions were designed to identify R. subnigricans and R. japonica. The results demonstrated that while LAMP could specifically detect R. subnigricans and R. japonica, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) could not distinguish R. subnigricans from Russula nigricans. In addition, the results demonstrated that, compared to electrophoresis-LAMP and real-time quantitative LAMP (RT-qLAMP), the detection sensitivity of HNB-LAMP (a mixture of LAMP with hydroxy naphthol blue (HNB) dye) for R. subnigricans could reach 0.5 pg/μl and was 100-fold higher than that of PCR. The LAMP reaction could be completed in 45 min, which is much faster than the conventional PCR. In the future, LAMP can be used a quick, specific, and sensitive detection tool in various fields.

Abstract
Cancer is a major public health problem around the world and the key leading cause of death in the world. It is well-known that glucolipid metabolism, immunoreaction, and growth/death pattern of cancer cells are markedly different from normal cells. Recently, acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family 4 (ACSL4) is found be participated in the activation of long chain fatty acids metabolism, immune signaling transduction, and ferroptosis, which can be a promising potential target and biomarker for anticancer. Specifically, ACSL4 inhibits the progress of lung cancer, estrogen receptor (ER) positive breast cancer, cervical cancer and the up-regulation of ACSL4 can improve the sensitivity of cancer cells to ferroptosis by enhancing the accumulation of lipid peroxidation products and lethal reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, it is undeniable that the high expression of ACSL4 in ER negative breast cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal cancer, and prostate cancer can also be related with tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. In the present review, we provide an update on understanding the controversial roles of ACSL4 in different cancer cells.

Abstract
Purpose High-altitude environment mainly with hypobaric hypoxia could induce pathological alterations in ocular tissue. Previous studies have mostly focused on sporadic case reports and simulated high-altitude hypoxia experiments. This aim of this study was to explore the proteomic and morphological changes of ocular tissue in mice at real altitude environment. Methods In this study, mice were flown from Chengdu (elevation: 500 m) to Lhasa (elevation: 3600 m). After exposure for 1day, 3, 6, 10, 20, 30, and 40days, the mice were euthanatized to obtain blood and ocular tissue. Serological tests, ocular pathological examinations, integral ocular proteomics analysis, and Western blot were conducted. Results We focused on acute phase (1–3 days) and chronic phase (>30 days) during high-altitude acclimatization. Serum interleukin-1 was increased at 3 days, while superoxide dismutase, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α showed no statistical changes. H&E staining demonstrated that the cornea was edematous at 3 days and exhibited slower proliferation at 30 days. The choroid showed a consistently significant thickening, while there existed no noticeable changes in retinal thickness. Overall, 4073 proteins were identified, among which 71 and 119 proteins were detected to have significant difference at 3 days and 40 days when compared with the control group. Functional enrichment analysis found the differentiated proteins at 3 days exposure functionally related with response to radiation, dephosphorylation, negative regulation of cell adhesion, and erythrocyte homeostasis. Moreover, the differential profiles of the proteins at 40 days exposure exhibited changes of regulation of complement activation, regulation of protein activation cascade, regulation of humoral immune response, second-messenger-mediated signaling, regulation of leukocyte activation, and cellular iron homeostasis. Interestingly, we found the ocular proteins with lactylation modification were increased along high-altitude adaptation. Conclusion This is the first work reporting the ocular proteomic and morphological changes at real high-altitude environment. We expect it would deep the understanding of ocular response during altitude acclimatization.

Conversion from double-season rice to ratoon rice paddy fields reduces carbon footprint and enhances net ecosystem economic benefit. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2022; 813:152550. Abstract
Ratoon rice (RR) system is an alternative to the double-season rice (DR) system in central China due to its high annual yield and relatively lower cost and labor requirement. However, the effect of conversion from DR to RR on the carbon footprint (CF) and net ecosystem economic benefit (NEEB) remains largely unknown. Here, we elucidated the effect by using two early-season rice varieties (ZJZ17, LY287) and two late-season rice varieties (WY103, TY390) for the DR system, and two RR varieties (YLY911, LY6326) for the RR system. The six varieties constituted four cropping systems, including DR1 (ZJZ17 + WY103), DR2 (LY287 + TY390), RR1 (YLY911) and RR2 (LY6326). The two-year experiment demonstrated that RR had 27.37% lower annual CF than DR, which could be attributed to the significantly lower annual CF (by 87.27%) of ratoon crop in RR relative to that of the late-season rice in DR. Direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions contributed the most to annual CF in both systems, accounting for 43.28% and 35.39% in DR and RR, respectively. Furthermore, conversion from DR to RR system significantly increased annual NEEB by 30.95%. This increase could be attributed to the 20.25% higher annual grain yield of main crop in RR relative to early-season rice in DR, and 75.32% and 87.27% lower annual costs for agricultural inputs and CF of ratoon crop than late-season rice in DR, respectively. Rice variety also showed certain effects on the yields and GHG emissions in different RR systems. Compared with RR1, RR2 significantly increased annual yield and annual NEEB, while decreased annual CF and annual yield-scaled CF (CFy). These findings suggest that the conversion of the DR system to LY6326 RR system may be a highly promising strategy to simultaneously reduce CF, promote NEEB and maintain high grain yield in central China.

Abstract
Clinical observations found vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (DR) occurs in both type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, but T1DM may perform more progressive retinal abnormalities at the same diabetic duration with or without clinical retinopathy. In the present study, T1DM and T2DM patients without manifestations of DR were included in our preliminary clinical retrospective observation study to investigate the differentiated retinal function at the preclinical stage. Then, T1DM and T2DM rat models with 12-week diabetic duration were constructed to explore the potential mechanism of the discrepancy in retinal disorders. Our data demonstrated T1DM patients presented a poor retinal function, a higher allele frequency for ALDH2GA/AA, and a depressed aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) activity and silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) level, compared to T2DM individuals. In line with this, higher amplitudes of neurovascular function-related waves of electroretinograms were found in T2DM rats. Furthermore, the retinal outer nuclear layers were reduced in T1DM rats. The levels of retinal oxidative stress biomarkers including total reactive oxygen species, NADPH oxidase 4 and mitochondrial DNA damage, and inflammatory indicators covering inducible/endothelial nitric acid synthase ratio, interleukin-1, and interleukin-6 were obviously elevated. Notably, the level of retinal ALDH2 and SIRT1 in T1DM rats was significantly diminished, while the expression of neovascularization factors was dramatically enhanced compared to T2DM. Together, our data indicated that the ALDH2/SIRT1 deficiency resulted in prominent oxidative stress and was in association with DR progression. Moreover, a differentiating ALDH2/SIRT1 expression may be responsible for the dissimilar severity of DR pathological processes in chronic inflammatory-related T1DM and T2DM.

Abstract
AIM To investigate therapeutic effects of traditional Chinese medicine formulations, Hexuemingmu (HXMM) on laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and follow-up effect in mice. METHODS C57BL/6 mice of 8-week-old were used and CNV was induced with 577 nm laser photocoagulation. Animals were randomly divided into groups and different doses of HXMM were administered daily. One, four, and eight weeks after the intervention, the electroretinogram (ERG), fundus fluorescence angiography, choroidal flat mount and immunofluorescence staining were preformed to evaluate the function and CNV formation. The expression levels of angiogenic proteins were determined by Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining. An analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to test the differences among the groups. RESULTS The results showed that HXMM effectively increased amplitude of ERG of mice (P<0.05), alleviated fundus CNV leakage (P<0.05), and reduced the area of neovascularization and the expression of angiogenic proteins (P<0.05) after laser-induced CNV. CONCLUSION HXMM can protect the retinal function of mice after laser-induced CNV, and inhibit the CNV development.

Abstract
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 plays a pivotal role in detoxifying aldehydes, and our previous study revealed that aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 could alleviate diabetic retinopathy-associated damage. We aimed to characterize the potential role of aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 in diabetic keratopathy. Twenty-four rats with streptozotocin-induced (60 mg/kg, single intraperitoneal injection) type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) were divided the T1DM group and the T1DM + Alda1 (an activator of aldehyde dehydrogenase 2) group (5 mg/kg/d, intraperitoneal injection, 1/2/3 months), while an additional 12 healthy rats served as the control group. Corneal morphology was examined in vivo and in vitro at one, two, and three months after T1DM induction. Additionally, serum inflammatory factors were measured by ELISA, and the expression of corneal vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 was measured by immunofluorescence staining. Corneal cell death was evaluated by terminal-deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining. Slit lamp analysis showed that the area of corneal epithelial cell injury in the T1DM + Alda1 group was significantly smaller than that in the T1DM group at one and two months after T1DM induction (all P < 0.05). OCT analysis and HE staining showed that the central corneal thickness (indication of corneal edema) and the epithelial keratinization level in the T1DM + Alda1 group was evidently decreased compared with those in the T1DM group (all P < 0.05). The serum inflammatory factors interleukin-1 and interleukin-6 were significantly upregulated in the T1DM group compared with the T1DM + Alda1 group at three months after T1DM induction (all P < 0.05), while there were no differences in SOD or TNF-α levels among all groups. Furthermore, corneal VEGF-A expression and corneal cell death in the T1DM + Alda1 group were dramatically reduced compared to those in the T1DM group (all P < 0.05). In conclusion, the aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 agonist Alda1 attenuated rat corneal dysfunction induced by T1DM by alleviating corneal edema, decreasing corneal cell death, and downregulating corneal VEGF-A expression.

Abstract
AIM To explore whether the retinal neovascularization (NV) in a genetic mutant mice model could be ameliorated in an inherited retinitis pigmentosa (RP) mouse, which would help to elucidate the possible mechanism and prevention of retinal NV diseases in clinic. METHODS The Vldlr -/- mice, the genetic mutant mouse model of retinal NV caused by the homozygous mutation of Vldlr gene, with the rd1 mice, the inherited RP mouse caused by homozygous mutation of Pde6b gene were bred. Intercrossing of the above two mice led to the birth of the F1 hybrids, further inbreeding of which gave birth to the F2 offspring. The ocular genotypes and phenotypes of the mice from all generations were examined, with the F2 offspring grouped according to the genotypes. RESULTS The rd1 mice exhibited the RP phenotype of outer retinal degeneration and loss of retinal function. The Vldlr -/- mice exhibited the phenotype of retinal NV obviously shown by the fundus fluorescein angiography. The F1 hydrides, with the heterozygote genotype, exhibited no phenotypes of RP or retinal NV. The F2 offspring with homozygous genotypes were grouped into four subgroups. They were the F2-I mice with the wild-type Pde6b and Vldlr genes (Pde6b+/+ -Vldlr+/+ ), which had normal ocular phenotypes; the F2-II mice with homozygous mutant Vldlr gene (Pde6b+/+ -Vldlr-/- ), which exhibited the retinal NV phenotype; the F2-III mice with homozygous mutant Pde6b gene (Pde6b-/- -Vldlr+/+ ), which exhibited the RP phenotype. Specifically, the F2-IV mice with homozygous mutant Vldlr and Pde6b gene (Pde6b-/- -Vldlr-/- ) showed only the RP phenotype, without the signs of retinal NV. CONCLUSION The retinal NV can be inhibited by the RP phenotype, which implies the role of a hyperoxic state in treating retinal NV diseases.

Abstract
During the process of aging, the retina exhibits chronic oxidative stress (OS) damage. Our preliminary experiment showed that acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) could alleviate retinal damage caused by OS. This study aimed to explore whether ALDH2 could inhibit mice retinal cell apoptosis and enhance the function of unfolded protein response in endoplasmic reticulum (UPRER) through reducing OS in aging process. Retinal function and structure in vivo and in vitro were examined in aged ALDH2+ overexpression mice and ALDH2 agonist Alda1-treated aged mice. Levels of ALDH2, endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), apoptosis and inflammatory cytokines were evaluated. Higher expression of ALDH2 was observed at the outer nuclear layer (ONL) and the inner nuclear layer (INL) in aged ALDH2+ overexpression and aged Alda1-treated mice. Moreover, aged ALDH2+ overexpression mice and aged Alda1-treated mice exhibited better retinal function and structure. Increased expression of glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) and ERS-related protein phosphorylated eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (peIF2α) and decreased expression of apoptosis-related protein, including C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), caspase12 and caspase9, and retinal inflammatory cytokines were detected in the retina of aged ALDH2+ overexpression mice and aged Alda1-treated mice. The expression of ALDH2 in the retina was decreased in aging process. ALDH2 could reduce retinal oxidative stress and apoptosis, strengthen UPRER during the aging process to improve retinal function and structure.

Abstract
To clarify the effects of increased density and reduced nitrogen on greenhouse gas emission in double-season paddy fields under the water-saving and simple cultivation mode, we used Luliangyou 996 (early rice) and Fengyuanyou 299 (late rice) as materials to collect greenhouse gas by closed static box method, monitored the dynamics of CH4 and N2O emissions from different combinations of increased density and reduced nitrogen for early and late rice, and explored changes in cumulative CH4 and N2O emissions, global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) as affected by different combinations of increased density and reduced nitrogen from double-season rice fields. The results showed that the cumulative emissions of CH4 and N2O from different combinations were significantly different. Compared with the control (CK), cumulative CH4 emission, GWP and GHGI in the two seasons decreased by 50.8%, 37.3%, and 42.9% for the combination of increased density and reduced nitrogen IR2(the amount of nitrogen applied of early rice was 86.4 kg·hm-2, the density was 360000 holes·hm-2; the amount of nitrogen applied of late rice was 108 kg·hm-2, the density was 320000 holes·hm-2), respectively. IR2 of early rice had the lowest N2O cumulative emission, being 33.7% lower than CK. IR1(the amount of nitrogen applied of early rice was 103.2 kg·hm-2, the density was 320000 holes·hm-2; the amount of nitrogen applied of late rice was 129 kg·hm-2, the density was 280000 holes·hm-2) of late rice had the lowest N2O cumulative emission, being decreased by 94.9%. IR2 had the lowest annual total GWP and GHGI of double-season paddy fields. Compared with other treatments of increased density and reduced nitrogen, the IR2 treatment, where nitrogen fertilizer in both early and late rice was reduced by 28.0%, the density of early rice was increased by 28.6%, and the density of late rice was increased by 33.3%, was an effective and safe option for simultaneously ensuring high yield and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract
Background Amanitin-producing mushrooms, mainly distributed in the genera Amanita, Galerina and Lepiota, possess MSDIN gene family for the biosynthesis of many cyclopeptides catalysed by prolyl oligopeptidase (POP). Recently, transcriptome sequencing has proven to be an efficient way to mine MSDIN and POP genes in these lethal mushrooms. Thus far, only A. palloides and A. bisporigera from North America and A. exitialis and A. rimosa from Asia have been studied based on transcriptome analysis. However, the MSDIN and POP genes of many amanitin-producing mushrooms in China remain unstudied; hence, the transcriptomes of these speices deserve to be analysed. Results In this study, the MSDIN and POP genes from ten Amanita species, two Galerina species and Lepiota venenata were studied and the phylogenetic relationships of their MSDIN and POP genes were analysed. Through transcriptome sequencing and PCR cloning, 19 POP genes and 151 MSDIN genes predicted to encode 98 non-duplicated cyclopeptides, including α-amanitin, β-amanitin, phallacidin, phalloidin and 94 unknown peptides, were found in these species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that (1) MSDIN genes generally clustered depending on the taxonomy of the genus, while Amanita MSDIN genes clustered depending on the chemical substance; and (2) the POPA genes of Amanita, Galerina and Lepiota clustered and were separated into three different groups, but the POPB genes of the three distinct genera were clustered in a highly supported monophyletic group. Conclusions These results indicate that lethal Amanita species have the genetic capacity to produce numerous cyclopeptides, most of which are unknown, while lethal Galerina and Lepiota species seem to only have the genetic capacity to produce α-amanitin. Additionally, the POPB phylogeny of Amanita, Galerina and Lepiota conflicts with the taxonomic status of the three genera, suggesting that underlying horizontal gene transfer has occurred among these three genera.

Abstract
Three hepatic failure poisoning incidents caused by Lepiota brunneoincarnata and Lepiota venenata mushrooms have been occurred in China in 2017, L. venenata has been described as a new species. However, the cyclopeptide toxins of these lethal mushrooms remain poorly understood. In this study, the composition and content of amatoxins in L. brunneoincarnata and L. venenata are analyzed and compared, the analysis of composition and content of amatoxins in L. venenata are reported for the first time. The results showed that β-amanitin (β-AMA), α-amanitin (α-AMA), amanin, and amaninamide were identified in L. brunneoincarnata, and α-AMA, amanin II (an analog of amanin), and an unknown compound were identified in L. venenata. The differences between L. brunneoincarnata and L. venenata in the identified compounds provide chemical evidence for L. venenata as a new species. Quantitative analysis shows that α-AMA concentrations in L. brunneoincarnata and L. venenata were 0.72-1.97 mg/g dry weight, β-AMA concentrations in L. brunneoincarnata were 0.57-0.94 mg/g dry weight, and β-AMA was absent in L. venenata.

Abstract
Background Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a kind of inherited retinal degenerative diseases characterized by the progressive loss of photoreceptors. RP has been a conundrum without satisfactory countermeasures in clinic until now. Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), a major enzyme involved in aldehyde detoxification, has been demonstrated to be beneficial for a growing number of human diseases, such as cardiovascular dysfunction, diabetes mellitus and neurodegeneration. However, its protective effect against RP remains unknown. Our study explored the impact of ALDH2 on retinal function and structure in N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced RP rats. Methods Rats were gavaged with 5 mg/kg Alda-1, an ALDH2 agonist, 5 days before and 3 days after MNU administration. Assessments of retinal function and morphology as well as measurement of specific proteins expression level were conducted. Results Electroretinogram recordings showed that Alda-1 administration alleviated the decrease in amplitude caused by MNU, rendering protection of retinal function. Mitigation of photoreceptor degeneration in MNU-treated retinas was observed by optical coherence tomography and retinal histological examination. In addition, Western blotting results revealed that ALDH2 protein expression level was upregulatedwith increased expression of SIRT1 protein after the Alda-1 intervention. Besides, endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) was reduced according to the significant downregulation of GRP78 protein, while apoptosis was ameliorated as shown by the decreased expression of PARP1 protein. Conclusions Together, our data demonstrated that ALDH2 could provide preservation of retinal function and morphology against MNU-induced RP, with the underlying mechanism at least partly related to the modulation of SIRT1, ERS and apoptosis.

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the effect of laryngeal reconstruction in functional and anatomical aspect with ultrathin titanium mesh and myofascial flap in patients underwent frontolateral vertical partial laryngectomy with T2 and T3 glottic laryngeal carcinoma. Method:Ten patients with T2 and T3 glottic laryngeal carcinoma underwent frontolateral vertical partial laryngectomy in different range. The ultrathin titanium mesh was shaped up according to the form of thyroid cartilage in operation while the thyroid perichondrium membrane combined with straped myofascial flap was lined under the titanium mesh to restore the laryngeal cavity space. The pronunciation, swallowing capability and extubation rate were observed after surgery. Result:Nine patients underwent extubation within 2 to 4 weeks after surgery, one patients remove metal tube in two-stage after laryngeal dilation surgery with the Montgomery tube. Swallowing and voice function in these patients recovered well and no deglutition disorder was found. CT scan showed that the Titanium meshs were fixed well without displacement and deformity. Electronic laryngoscopy showed that the mucosa of laryngeal lumen was smooth without laryngeal stenosis, keloid contraction, tissue necrosis or titanium mesh exposure. Conclusion:In the cases of T2, T3 glottic laryngeal cancer patients, laryngeal framework reconstruction with the new type of ultrathin titanium mesh, thyroid cartilage membrane and pedicled fascia plap of strap muscles is a good choice after the vertical frontolateral partial laryngectomy. Even some elective T4 cases with the former part invasion in supra-glottic or infra-glottic region can receive this operation. It can reconstruct the physiological and anatomical structure of the larynx, restore laryngeal function with a sound decanulization rate.

Abstract
Alzheimer disease (AD) is most common neurodegenerative disorder of dementia, as we all know that ApoE4 is the greatest genetic risk factor of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). Coronary heart disease (CHD) leads to one-fourth of all deaths in industrialized countries, it is reported that ApoE4 increases the risk of coronary heart disease as well. Furthermore, evidence show that coronary heart disease also increases the incidence of Alzheimer's disease. Whether ApoE4 is a bridge connecting AD with CHD or not? And what are the special mechanism and therapeutic methods? Researchers found that cholesterol metabolic disorder is the common cause and risk factor of AD and CHD. Epidemiological studies demonstrate that carriers of the ApoE4 allele have higher cholesterol plasma concentration. More evidence indicate that hypercholesterolemia accelerates the progression of coronary atherosclerosis, damages the central nervous system blood-brain barrier, promotes Aβ protein production and Tau deposition in brain. Therefore, ApoE4 is likely to be the bridge between AD and CHD, and may be a potentially promising therapeutic target.

Abstract
In the present work, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and hyperbranched rolling circle amplification (HRCA) methods were developed to detect and distinguish different lethal Amanita species. Specific LAMP primers and HRCA padlock probes for species-specific identification and a set of universal LAMP primers for lethal Amanita species were designed and tested. The results indicated that the LAMP-based assay was able to discriminate introclade lethal Amanita species but was not able to discriminate intraclade species perfectly, while the HRCA-based assay could discriminate whether introclade or intraclade species. The universal LAMP primers were positive for 10 lethal species of Amanita section Phalloideae and negative for 16 species of Amanita outside section Phalloideae. The detection limits of LMAP and HRCA were 10 and 1 pg of genomic DNA per reaction, respectively. In conclusion, the two methods could be rapid, specific, sensitive and low-cost tools for the identification of lethal Amanita species.

Abstract
Background Oxidative stress (OS) is an essential factor in the pathogenesis of branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). Studies have demonstrated the role of hydrogen gas in the regulation of OS. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of hydrogen gas on the BRVO rat model. Methods Twenty-four BRVO rats were randomly divided into two groups: the hydrogen gas (H) group (42% H2, 21% O2, 37% N2) and the model (M) group (21% O2, 79% N2). Rats in the H group inhaled hydrogen gas for 8 h every day up to 30 d post-occlusion. Twelve age-matched healthy rats served as the control (C) group. Retinal function and morphology were detected at 1, 7, 14 and 30 d post-occlusion. Furthermore, the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-α) was detected by immunofluorescent staining. Results Full-field electroretinography (ffERG) revealed that the amplitude of the b-wave (dark-adaptation 3.0 response), the amplitude of the OPs2 wave and the light-adapted flicker response in the H group were all higher than those in the M group at 7 d post-occlusion (all p < 0.05). The reopen time of occlusive retinal vessels in the H group was 2.235 ± 1.128 d, which was shorter than that in the M group (4.234 ± 2.236 d, p < 0.05). The rats in the H group had a thinner IPL + GCL + NFL and an increased total retina compared with those in the M group at 3 d post-occlusion (p < 0.05), while the rats in the H group had a thicker INL, IPL + GCL + NFL and total retina compared with those at 7, 14 and 30 d post-occlusion (p < 0.05). Moreover, the flow velocity of ear vein blood was increased in the H group compared with that in the M group (p < 0.05). The expression of VEGF-α in the H group was dramatically decreased compared with that in the M group at 1, 7 and 14 d post-occlusion (p < 0.05), while the expression kept in similar level at 30 d post-occlusion (p > 0.05). Conclusions Our findings demonstrate that inhalation of hydrogen gas could alleviate retinal oedema, shorten reopen time and improve retinal function, and the potential mechanism might be related to a decrease in VEGF-α expression.

Abstract
Vaccines administered orally enable the stimulation of both the mucous membrane and system immune responses. However, tumor vaccines, whose effective elements are antigen protein molecules or gene-encoding antigens, are hardly accustomed to the harsh gastrointestinal environment. Here, we explored an oral nanoecapsulated tumor vaccine complex to evaluate the anti-tumor effect. Tomato lectin (TL) was modified on the surface of a nanoemulsion (NE) composed of MAGE1-HSP70/SEA (MHS). C57BL/6 mice were immunized with NE (-), NE (MHS) and TL-NE (MHS) via po. or sc. administration. Additionally, the cellular immunocompetence was detected by the enzyme-linked immunospot assay and lactate dehydrogenase release assay. Serum antibody titers were analyzed using the enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay. Next, the therapeutic and tumor challenge assays were performed. The TL-NE (MHS) particles were 20 ± 5 nm in diameter and could resist pepsin and trypsin digestion. The cellular immune responses elicited by TL-NE (MHS) perioral were stronger than those by TL-NE (MHS)-sc. (p < 0.05) when targeted to B16-MAGE1 tumor cells. The levels of MAGE-1 antibody induced by TL-NE (MHS) via the oral route was higher than control group (p < 0.05). The percentage of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in TL-NE (MHS)-po. group was more than other groups (p < 0.05). Furthermore, oral TL-NE (M)HScould delay tumor growth and defer tumor occurrence and tumor recurrence after resection in mice challenged with B16-MAGE-1 tumor cells. The study suggested that the oral TL-NE (MHS) vaccine delivery system is feasible to improve the vaccine protection effect and may have broad application in cancer therapy.

Abstract
To explore the effects of winter crops recycling into paddy field on soil carbon pool, we cultivated rape, Chinese milk vetch, ryegrass and potato in winter season after harvesting double-season rice, with fallow as control (CK). The contents of soil organic carbon (SOC) and labile organic carbon (LOC) in the harvest of early and late rice were measured, and the stable carbon, activity of carbon pool, carbon pool index, carbon pool activity index and carbon pool management index (CMI) were calculated. Results showed that winter cover crops returning increased SOC content by 1%-8% and 3%-18% after harvest of early rice and late rice, respectively in comparison with CK. Cultivating rape, Chinese milk vetch and ryegrass all increased the LOC content, with enhancement of 16.2%-84.2% and 24.4%-28.1% after harvest of early rice and late rice, respectively. The CMI of all winter crop treatments presented a growth ratio of 1.4%-41.8% compared to CK. In conclusion, the cultivation of winter crop and recycling to field promoted soil carbon fixation and soil quality, among which the ryegrass and Chinese milk vetch showed better comprehensive effect.

Abstract
Objective:To discuss the clinical anatomic characteristics of congenital pyriform sinus fistula and summarize the experiences of open neck surgery. Method:The clinical data of 12 patients with congenital pyriform sinus fistula were retrospectively analyzed.Result:During the operation, all lesions were located below of superior laryngeal nerve. All fistulas were closely related with the supperior part of thyroid gland and laterally passed over the left recurrent laryngeal nerve just before merging into the apex of piriform sinus or beginning of aesophagus. Follow-up periods were ranging between 8 to 65 months. Two months after surgery, one patient showed lateral neck abscess again. After open drainage procedures and antibiotics treatment, there was no recurrence signs during 3 years of follow-up.Conclusion:We found that the congenital pyriform sinus fistula was closely related to the superior thyroid gland and recurrent laryngeal nerve, which was different from the popular theory. We had not encountered types descending into mediastinum and thoracic cavity or ascending along common carotid artery sheath. All fistulas passed over the left recurrent laryngeal nerve, and then merged into the apex of pyriform sinus or beginning of aesophagus. The key point for successful resection of fistulas in block was to remove the superior involvement part of the thyroid gland and exposure the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Based on our practical findings, the neck dissection procedure should not be taken in some patients that the anatomical structure is not clear for repeated infections.

Effects of different agricultural organic wastes on soil GHG emissions: During a 4-year field measurement in the North China Plain. WASTE MANAGEMENT (NEW YORK, N.Y.) 2018; 81:202-210. Abstract
Large quantities and many varieties of agricultural organic wastes are produced in China annually. Applying agricultural organic wastes to soil plays an essential role in coping with the environmental pollution from agricultural wastes, solving the energy crisis and responding global climate change. But there is little information available on the effects of different agricultural organic wastes on soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The objectives of this study were to investigate and compare the impacts of different organic wastes on soil GHG emissions during a 4-year field experiments in the North China Plain, as well as analyze the influential factors that may be related to GHG emissions. The treatments were: crop straw (CS), biogas residue (BR), mushroom residue (MR), wine residue (WR) and pig manure (PM) returning to soil, as well as a control with no organic waste applied to soil but chemical fertilizer addition only (CF). The results showed that compared with CF treatment, organic material applied to soil significantly increased GHG emissions and emissions followed the order of WR(27,961.51 kg CO2-eq/ha/yr) > PM(26,376.50 kg CO2-eq/ha/yr) > MR(23,366.60 kg CO2-eq/ha/yr) > CS(22,434.44 kg CO2-eq/ha/yr) > BR (22,029.04 kg CO2-eq/ha/yr) > CF(17,402.77 kg CO2-eq/ha/yr), averagely. And considering the affecting factors, GHG emissions were significantly related to soil temperature and soil water content. Different organic wastes also affected soil total organic carbon (TOC), microbial carbon (MBC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) contents, which related to GHG emissions. Further analysis showed that characteristics of organic wastes affected GHG emissions, which included C-N ratio, lignin, polyphenol, cellulose and hemicellulose. Our study demonstrates that biogas residue returning to soil emitted minimum GHG emissions among these different types of organic wastes, which provided a better solution for applying organic wastes to mitigate soil GHG emissions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Our laboratory discovered a Kunming mouse with enormous electroretinogram (ERG) defects. Its auditory brainstem response (ABR) threshold was significantly elevated and closely resembled the features of Usher syndrome (USH). This study sought to cross these USH-like mice (named KMush/ush mice) with CBA/CaJ mice to establish recombinant inbred strains and identify their phenotypes and genotypes. METHODS KMush/ush mice were crossed with CBA/CaJ mice to establish inbred strains by sibling mating. ERG, ABR, ocular fundus morphology, histological examinations of the retina and inner ear, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blotting, and exon sequencing were performed to assess the phenotypes and genotypes of the offspring strains. RESULTS The F1 hybrids from crossing KMush/ush and CBA/CaJ mice had normal ERG and ABR responses. The F2 offspring from intercrossing the F1 mice showed a segregation of the retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and hearing loss phenotypes. The CBA-1ush/ush mice had an RP phenotype that was characterized by a vanished ERG waveform and loss of the outer nuclear layer. Their Pde6b gene had a nonsense mutation that resulted in the failure of protein production in western blotting. However, the ABR threshold of this strain of mice was normal. The CBA-2ush/ush mice had normal retinal function and architecture. Their ABR threshold was increased, with a dramatic degeneration of the stereocilia bundles in the outer hair cells of the inner ear. Whole exome sequencing and exon sequencing revealed a deletion of one base pair in exon 31 of the Adgrv1 gene, which would result in the premature termination of protein encoding. The level of Adgrv1 mRNA was reduced in the CBA-2ush/ush mice. The CBA-3ush/ush mice had phenotypes of RP, elevated ABR threshold, and degeneration of the stereocilia bundles in the outer hair cells. They were closely associated with the nonsense mutations of Pde6b and Adgrv1, respectively. CONCLUSION We isolated a mouse strain with hearing loss from inbred mice with retinal degeneration and established it as a recombinant inbred strain with a spontaneous mutation in Adgrv1, the human Usher syndrome 2C gene. The retinal degeneration was cause by a mutation in Pde6b, while the hearing loss was caused by a mutation in Adgrv1.

Abstract
Background Molecular hydrogen (H2) has been widely reported to have benefiicial effects in diverse animal models and human disease through reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether hydrogen gas could ameliorate endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) in rats. Material/Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into a normal group, a model group, a nitrogen-oxygen (N-O) group, and a hydrogen-oxygen (H-O) group. EIU was induced in rats of the latter 3 groups by injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). After that, rats in the N-O group inhaled a gas mixture of 67% N2 and 33% O2, while those in the H-O group inhaled a gas mixture of 67% H2 and 33% O2. All rats were graded according to the signs of uveitis after electroretinography (ERG) examination. Protein concentration in the aqueous humor (AqH) was measured. Furthermore, hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunostaining of anti-ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1) in the iris and ciliary body (ICB) were carried out. Results No statistically significant differences existed in the graded score of uveitis and the b-wave peak time in the Dark-adapted 3.0 ERG among the model, N-O, and H-O groups (P>0.05), while rats of the H-O group showed a lower concentration of AqH protein than that of the model or N-O group (P<0.05). The number of the infiltrating cells in the ICB of rats from the H-O group was not significantly different from that of the model or N-O group (P>0.05), while the activation of microglia cells in the H-O group was somewhat reduced (P<0.05). Conclusions Post-treatment hydrogen gas inhalation did not ameliorate the clinical signs, or reduce the infiltrating cells of EIU. However, it inhibited the elevation of protein in the AqH and reduced the microglia activation.

Abstract
The therapeutic effects of hydrogen-rich saline (HRS) have been reported for a wide range of diseases mainly via selectively reducing the amount of reactive oxygen species. Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of uveitis and endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU). In this study, we investigated whether HRS can mitigate EIU in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into Norm group, Model group, HRS group, dexamethasone (DEX) group, and rats in the latter three groups were injected with equal amount of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce EIU of different severities (by 1 mg/kg of LPS, or 1/8 mg/kg of LPS). Rats in HRS group were injected with HRS intraperitoneally at three different modes to purse an ameliorating effect of EIU (10 mL/kg of HRS immediately after injection of 1 mg/kg of LPS, 20 mL/kg of HRS once a day for 1 week before injection of 1 mg/kg of LPS and at 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 6, 8, 12 hours after LPS administration, or 20 mL/kg of HRS once a day for 1 week before injection of 1/8 mg/kg of LPS, and at 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 6, 8, 12, 24 hours and once a day for 3 weeks after LPS administration). Rats of DEX group were injected with 1 mL/kg of DEX solution intraperitoneally immediately after LPS administration. Rats in Norm and Model groups did not receive any treatment. All rats were examined under slit lamp microscope and graded according to the clinical signs of uveitis. Electroretinogram, quantitative analysis of protein in aqueous humor (AqH) and histological examination of iris and ciliary body were also carried out. Our results showed that HRS did not obviously ameliorate the signs of uveitis under slit lamp examination and the inflammatory cells infiltration around iris and cilliary body of EIU induced by 1 mg/kg or 1/8 mg/kg of LPS (P > 0.05), while DEX significantly reduced the inflammation reflected by the above two indicators (P < 0.05). The impaired retinal function of mild EIU induced by 1/8 mg/kg of LPS, showed by delay of peak time of b-wave of Dark adapted 3.0 electroretinogram, was not significantly restored by HRS (P > 0.05), while DEX had an obvious therapeutic effect (P < 0.05). However, HRS exerted an inhibition trend on elevation of protein in AqH of EIU induced by 1 mg/kg of LPS, and significantly reduced the increasing amount of protein in AqH of mild EIU induced by 1/8 mg/kg of LPS (P < 0.05). In conclusion, HRS could not obviously mitigate EIU in rats, while it could inhibit the elevation of AqH protein.

[Effects of Water and Nitrogenous Fertilizer Coupling on CH4 and N2O Emission from Double-Season Rice Paddy Field]. HUAN JING KE XUE= HUANJING KEXUE 2015; 36:3365-3372. Abstract
To provide support for the efficient use of water and fertilizer technology to double-season rice cultivation, water and fertilizer coupling mode was applied in this research, including two irrigation methods and four N levels. The irrigation methods were flood irrigation and intermittent irrigation, while four N levels were high-N, middle-N, low-N and none-N. Field experiment was conducted to study the effect of water and fertilizer coupling mode on CH4 and N2O emission. The results showed that the accumulated CH4 emissions were significantly reduced by intermittent irrigation, in comparison with flood irrigation, the reduction in early rice season were from 13. 18 kg.hm-2 to 87. 90 kg.hm-2, and were from 74. 48 kg.hm-2 to 131. 07 kg.hm-2 in late rice season, with a rate of 24. 4% -67. 4% and 42. 5% -65. 5% respectively; whereas the accumulated N20 emissions were increased, the increment were from 0. 03 kg.hm-2 to 0. 24 kg.hm-2 in early rice season and from 0. 35 kg.hm-2 to 1. 53 kg.hm-2 in late rice season when compared flood irrigation, increased by 6.2% -18. 3% and 40.2% - 80.9% respectively. On the whole, intermittent irrigation reduces the warming potential of greenhouse gases (GWP), which were decreased by 18. 8% to 58. 6% in early rice season and by 34. 4% to 60. 1% in late rice season, and the reduction of total GWP were from 2 388 to 4 151 kg. hm-2 (CO2 eq), with a rate of 41% -54% . Through correlation analysis it found that CH4 emissions from soil were significantly related with soil solution Eh and solution CH4 concentration. In comparison with the flood irrigation, the application of intermittent irrigation in double-season rice cultivation was conducive to CH4 reduction, though the increase came in N2O, but the GWPs were significantly reduced. Comprehensively, intermittent irrigation matching with middle-N is more benefit to double-season rice cultivation.

Mechanism and capacities of reducing ecological cost through rice-duck cultivation. JOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE 2013; 93:2881-2891. [PMID: 23703299 PMCID: PMC3842831 DOI: 10.1002/jsfa.6223] [Citation(s) in RCA: 14] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/26/2013] [Revised: 04/22/2013] [Accepted: 05/22/2013] [Indexed: 06/02/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Rice-duck cultivation is the essence of Chinese traditional agriculture. A scientific assessment of the mechanism and its capacity is of theoretical significance and practical value in improving modern agricultural technology. RESULTS The duck's secretions, excreta and their treading, pecking and predation decrease the occurrence of plant diseases, pests and weeds, enrich species diversity and improve the field environment. The rice-duck intergrowth system effectively prevents rice planthoppers and rice leafhoppers. The control effects can be up to 98.47% and 100% respectively; it also has effects on the control of Chilo suppressalis, Tryporyza incertulas and the rice leafrollers. Notable control results are found on sheath blight, while the effects on other diseases are about 50%. Harm from weeds is placed under primary control; prevention of weeds is sequenced by broadleaf weeds > sedge weeds > Gramineae weeds. Contents of soil organic matter, N, P and K are improved by the system; nutrient utilization is accelerated, resulting in decreased fertilizer application. Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 1-2% and duck fodder is saved in this system. There is also an obvious economic benefit. CONCLUSION Compared to conventional rice cultivation, rice-duck cultivation shows great benefits to ecologic cost and economic income.
