Abstract
Trace metal contents and fluxes in downward particulate matter and dated sediment cores of the NW Alboran Sea are analysed in this study with the aim of assessing the role of the Atlantic inflow on their transport. Increases in Zn, Cu and Pb were detected in downward particulate matter collected by sediment traps after river flooding events and after the Aznalcollar mining spill. Their arrival coincided within the recently estimated time range for river particles discharged into the Gulf of Cádiz to reach the Alboran Sea, indicating that their transfer is enhanced during events of increased river inputs of contaminated particulate matter. This also suggests that the effects of potential tailing dam failures in the Gulf of Cádiz watersheds could reach the Alboran Sea. These trace metals also increased in the sediment cores from the continental rise since the second half of the 19th century, suggesting that contaminated particles have been continuously transferred towards the Mediterranean Sea since that time, when mining concessions and production increased in the SW Iberian Pyrite Belt.

Abstract
Bottom trawling can significantly affect benthic communities, directly through immediate removal of sessile organisms and indirectly through sediment resuspension. Submarine canyons, often surrounded by fishing grounds, are important habitats for cold-water corals (CWC). Vulnerability of CWCs to increased suspended sediment concentration (SSC) is key to understanding the severity of bottom trawling effects on those communities. Here we show survival, growth, and physiological response of six CWCs from a Mediterranean submarine canyon (Dendrophyllia cornigera, Desmophyllum dianthus, Desmophyllum pertusum, Madrepora oculata, Leiopathes glaberrima and Muriceides lepida), exposed to a long-term, aquarium-based sedimentary disturbance experiment. Compared to cup coral and octocoral, which did not exhibit symptoms of distress, our data indicate that colonial scleractinian corals and black coral, which experienced substantial polyp mortality in enhanced SSC treatments, are more vulnerable. Indirect impact of bottom trawling could thus contribute to structural simplification of CWC communities posing an additional stressor alongside with global climate change.

Abstract
Submarine canyons are preferential pathways for transport of particulate matter and contaminants from the shelf to the deep sea. The Gulf of Palermo continental margin has a very narrow shelf (about 2-3 km wide on average) and is incised by several submarine canyons that favour shelf-slope sediment transfer. A sediment core collected on the outer shelf and six sediment cores taken at different depths along the Oreto, Eleuterio and Anerella submarine canyons were analysed to study the transfer and historical record of trace metal contamination in the Gulf of Palermo continental margin. Trace metals, major elements, organic carbon and sediment grain size were analysed in these cores, which were dated with 210Pb to assess their historical compositional evolution since the late 19th century. Hg, Pb, Cu, Zn and Cd content increased until the 1970s and 1980s, associated with the increase in urbanization and industrial activities in the Palermo area, and Hg was the contaminant that reached the highest enrichments. However, the increasing trend of these metals contamination was reversed in the 1970s and 1980s, coinciding with drastic changes in the terrigenous content and grain size of sediments in the canyon axes. These changes occurred when bottom trawling fleets expanded to deeper fishing grounds equipped with powerful trawlers around the Gulf of Palermo canyon heads and flanks and along the Oreto canyon axis. Bottom trawlers have resuspended large amounts of sediment, which have been transferred into the canyons since the 1970s and 1980s and have thus increased sediment accumulation rates. This resuspended sediment has been mixing with the sediment transferred and accumulated along the canyons, diluting and reducing its trace metal contamination levels since the expansion of the bottom trawling fleets.

Abstract
Bottom trawling in submarine canyons can affect their natural sedimentation rates, but studies addressing this issue are still scarce. In the Gulf of Palermo (SW Mediterranean), bottom trawling occurs on the slope around Oreto, Arenella and Eleuterio canyons. Analyses of excess 210Pb concentrations and grain size fractions in sediment cores from their canyon axes revealed that sedimentation rates and silt contents increased in all canyons in the 1980s, due to the expansion of more powerful trawlers (>500 HP) to deeper fishing grounds. In Eleuterio and Arenella canyons, sedimentation rates increased by an order of magnitude (0.1-1.4 cm·yr-1), whereas they increased less (0.1-0.7 cm·yr-1) in Oreto Canyon, since the enhanced trawling-derived sediment fluxes into this canyon are affected by sediment resuspension from trawling along its axis. Considering the global expansion of bottom trawling, we anticipate similar alterations in other trawled canyons, with ecological consequences that should be addressed by management strategies.

Abstract
The present paper introduces a new model used to study and analyse the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) epidemic-reported-data from Spain. This is a Hidden Markov Model whose hidden layer is a regeneration process with Poisson immigration, Po-INAR(1), together with a mechanism that allows the estimation of the under-reporting in non-stationary count time series. A novelty of the model is that the expectation of the unobserved process's innovations is a time-dependent function defined in such a way that information about the spread of an epidemic, as modelled through a Susceptible-Infectious-Removed dynamical system, is incorporated into the model. In addition, the parameter controlling the intensity of the under-reporting is also made to vary with time to adjust to possible seasonality or trend in the data. Maximum likelihood methods are used to estimate the parameters of the model.

Abstract
Knowing the displacement capacity and mobility patterns of industrially exploited (i.e., fished) marine resources is key to establishing effective conservation management strategies in human-impacted marine ecosystems. Acquiring accurate behavioral information of deep-sea fished ecosystems is necessary to establish the sizes of marine protected areas within the framework of large international societal programs (e.g., European Community H2020, as part of the Blue Growth economic strategy). However, such information is currently scarce, and high-frequency and prolonged data collection is rarely available. Here, we report the implementation of autonomous underwater vehicles and remotely operated vehicles as an aid for acoustic long-baseline localization systems for autonomous tracking of Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus), one of the key living resources exploited in European waters. In combination with seafloor moored acoustic receivers, we detected and tracked the movements of 33 tagged lobsters at 400-m depth for more than 3 months. We also identified the best procedures to localize both the acoustic receivers and the tagged lobsters, based on algorithms designed for off-the-shelf acoustic tags identification. Autonomous mobile platforms that deliver data on animal behavior beyond traditional fixed platform capabilities represent an advance for prolonged, in situ monitoring of deep-sea benthic animal behavior at meter spatial scales.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate protocols and methods to robustly detect the mosaic loss of chromosome Y (mLOY) are needed given its reported role in cancer, several age-related disorders and overall male mortality. Intensity SNP-array data have been used to infer mLOY status and to determine its prominent role in male disease. However, discrepancies of reported findings can be due to the uncertainty and variability of the methods used for mLOY detection and to the differences in the tissue-matrix used. RESULTS We created a publicly available software tool called MADloy (Mosaic Alteration Detection for LOY) that incorporates existing methods and includes a new robust approach, allowing efficient calling in large studies and comparisons between methods. MADloy optimizes mLOY calling by correctly modeling the underlying reference population with no-mLOY status and incorporating B-deviation information. We observed improvements in the calling accuracy to previous methods, using experimentally validated samples, and an increment in the statistical power to detect associations with disease and mortality, using simulation studies and real dataset analyses. To understand discrepancies in mLOY detection across different tissues, we applied MADloy to detect the increment of mLOY cellularity in blood on 18 individuals after 3 years and to confirm that its detection in saliva was sub-optimal (41%). We additionally applied MADloy to detect the down-regulation genes in the chromosome Y in kidney and bladder tumors with mLOY, and to perform pathway analyses for the detection of mLOY in blood. CONCLUSIONS MADloy is a new software tool implemented in R for the easy and robust calling of mLOY status across different tissues aimed to facilitate its study in large epidemiological studies.

Abstract
Nowadays, there are an increasing number of reports of deep-sea accumulation of marine debris, often associated with a wide array of pernicious effects on benthic fauna. Nevertheless, there is still a huge knowledge gap regarding the interaction of benthic organisms and marine debris. In this paper, we report for the first time the colonization of plastic debris by the protected sponges Lycopodina hypogea. The sponges were discovered growing on plastic debris tangled with nylon ropes on the Blanes canyon (northwestern Mediterranean Sea). Over 30 individuals of L. hypogea were identified attached on ca. 10 cm2 plastic debris, an unusual feature for a species mostly known for low-density populations and a patchy distribution. The implications of this discovery are discussed, and it is suggested that marine debris might provide substrate for benthic species on otherwise unsuitable habitats, with its possible role as stepping-stones for deep-sea benthic connectivity needing further study.

Abstract
Trace metal pollution of coastal sediment is monitored in many countries to control its evolution and the effectiveness of preventive and corrective measures. However, temporal variability of trace metal pollution is not always due to changes in pollution management, as natural processes can induce a significant variability in the trace metal content of sediment and particulate matter, especially in strongly polluted coastal areas. To study this variability, time series of trace metals in particulate matter and bottom sediments were recorded along with hydrographic and hydrodynamic parameters in the most highly polluted zone of the Besòs River prodelta. Two benthic tripods equipped with current meters, turbidimeters and sediment traps were deployed at 20 and 30 m water depth from late-September to mid-June and sediment cores were taken four times at each site during the deployment period. Trace metal content in the trapped particulate matter and the surface sediment increased during storm events, which can resuspend and erode several cm of subsurface sediments with higher pollution levels from earlier industrial times. After the storms, significant accumulation of less polluted sediment began, and near-bottom currents redistributed it, decreasing trace metal contents in surface sediments and trapped particulate matter. Therefore, energy conditions previous to monitoring sampling must be considered in order to evaluate the evolution of trace metals in inner shelf polluted sediments.

Abstract
Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most devastating and least treatable brain tumor with median survival <15 months and extremely high recurrence rates. Promising results of immune checkpoint blockade obtained from pre-clinical studies in mice did not translate to clinic, and new strategies are urgently needed, particularly those targeting GBM stem cells (GSCs) that are held responsible for drug resistance and tumor recurrence. Patient-derived GSC cultures are critical for finding effective brain tumor therapies. Here, we investigated the ability of the recently described monoclonal antibody Nilo1 to specifically recognize GSCs isolated from GBM surgical samples. We employed five patient-derived GSC cultures with different stemness marker expression and differentiation potential, able to recapitulate original tumors when xenotransplanted in vivo. To answer whether Nilo1 has any functional effects in patient-derived GSCs lines, we treated the cells with Nilo1 in vitro and analyzed cell proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis, sphere formation, as well as the expression of stem vs. differentiation markers. All tested GSCs stained positively for Nilo1, and the ability of Nilo1 to recognize GSCs strongly relied on their stem-like phenotype. Our results showed that a subset of patient-derived GSCs were sensitive to Nilo1 treatment. In three GSC lines Nilo1 triggered differentiation accompanied by the induction of p21. Most strikingly, in one GSC line Nilo1 completely abrogated self-renewal and led to Bax-associated apoptosis. Our data suggest that Nilo1 targets a molecule functionally relevant for stemness maintenance and pinpoint Nilo1 as a novel antibody-based therapeutical strategy to be used either alone or in combination with cytotoxic drugs for GSC targeting. Further pre-clinical studies are needed to validate the effectiveness of GSC-specific Nilo1 targeting in vivo.

Abstract
Polluted sediments retained in water reservoirs are potential sources of deleterious materials downstream, especially during floods or flushing flows (FFs). Their interaction with these events is important for determining potential risks and evaluating management actions. In the Ebro River, the Flix Reservoir accumulated a deposit of more than 3 × 105 t of industrial waste with high Hg concentrations. Because suspended particulate matter (SPM) is the main driver of Hg pollution downriver, this study analyses the transport of particulate matter and Hg pollution from the Flix Reservoir to the Ebro Estuary during FFs. Time series of currents, turbidity and downward particulate matter fluxes were obtained by current meters, turbidimeters and sediment traps assembled in benthic tripods. They were deployed in the reservoir and at two locations in the estuary during two recording periods that each captured a flushing flow (FF) event. In addition, SPM samples were collected during the study period at several locations along the river course, from upstream of the Flix Reservoir down to the river mouth, to measure the suspended particulate matter and associated Hg mobilized downstream. A continuous background level of Hg pollution was observed during the deployment periods, but the Hg and particulate matter fluxes increased by between one and two orders of magnitude during FFs. Though the two events reached similar water discharges, the first FF was after the wet season and generated lower particulate matter concentrations and fluxes, but higher Hg contents than the second, which occurred after the dry season. The higher available particulate matter in the second event diluted the polluted Hg particle load more than the first event. Thus, similar FFs may result in different Hg concentration and sediment transport episodes, largely depending on the previous hydrological regime and the river sediment availability. These findings should be considered for FF management.

Abstract
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a viral disease associated with a decrease in the number of born alive piglets (NBA) and an increase in the number of lost piglets (NLP) per farrowing. Under practical conditions, it is critical to assess whether a farm is suffering PRRSV recirculation in the sow herd as soon as possible. The aim of this research work was to develop a new method to detect potential PRRSV recirculation in sow production farms. Sow reproductive performance records from one farm (farm T) were used to set up the method and records from ten additional farms (farms V1 to V10) were used for validation. A conditional Poisson model of NLP on NBA was proposed to fit the data. A three-step procedure was implemented to detect potential PRRSV recirculation: (i) computation of the maximum-likelihood estimates of the expected values of NBA and NLP in a PRRSV non-recirculating scenario; (ii) calculation, for each farrowing, of the p-value associated with the probability of jointly observing deviations towards decreased NBA and increased NLP. The detection of a potential PRRSV recirculation was based on (iii) the combined p-value resulting from weighing the p-values of the last N farrowings by the chi-square-inverse method. In order to gain specificity, a displacement on the expected non-recirculating NBA and NLP values was used for tuning purposes. With this approach, two PRRSV circulating periods were detected in farm T, which were confirmed with standard laboratorial diagnostic techniques. The method was subsequently validated in farms V1 to V10, where ten PRRSV-recirculating time episodes had been diagnosed. The method proposed here was able to detect the ten PRRSV recirculations using a relatively small set of contiguous farrowings, with only two mismatched weeks, one as a false negative, in farm V1, and one as a false positive, in farm V4. It is concluded that a conditional Poisson-based model of NLP on NBA can be a useful tool for routinely detecting PRRSV recirculation in sow herds.

Abstract
V. M. E. was evacuated when he was a young boy in 1939. He left an aunt and cousins in Spain (G. E. family). He was adopted in Belgium by the D. family and thus his new name became V. D. He has been unable to remember his childhood before his adoption, a symptomatology compatible with amnesia for personal identity, presumably because he may have suffered a head contusion before or during his exodus. Identification tests were performed on blood samples from V. D. and V. G. E., a mitochondrial cousin of the missing boy. V. G. E. and the missing boy have a common mitochondrial ancestor, their maternal grandmother. The mitochondrial profile of both samples turned out to be highly specific, which allowed the genetic identification of V. D. as V. M. E. As a result, V. D. has reclaimed his past and reunited with his former family in Spain after more than seven decades. As far as we know, this is the first report describing the application of mitochondrial DNA in the identification of a person evacuated during the Spanish Civil War suffering from amnesia for personal identity.

Abstract
Objectives To apply a systems pathology-based approach to the quantification of nuclear Active β-catenin and human leukocyte antigen class I, and assess the biomarker involvement in a cohort of prostate tumor patients. Results The systems pathology approach applied allows a precise quantification of the marker expression in the different cell compartments as well as the determination of the areas that coexpress two markers. Our data shows that the accumulation of β-catenin in the nuclear compartment is significantly decreased in the adjacent normal areas when compared to tumor of the same patients (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the application of this novel multiple immunofluorescence assay demonstrates that the upregulation of Active β-catenin is a relatively common feature of prostate tumor development, and further supports the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway in prostate cancer progression. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Compare the clinical outcomes of different knee braces in the early phase of rehabilitation after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) in athletes. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a retrospective database study of athletes during early rehabilitation in a tertiary referral hospital between 1 February 2008 and 30 October 2010 after ACLR using bone patellar tendon bone (BPTB) or hamstring autograft. Differences in mid-patellar knee circumference, pain, and range of motion were assessed at admission. All patients followed the same rehabilitation protocol. Patients who had complications preventing them from following the assigned rehabilitation program were analyzed separately. Patients who completed their rehabilitation program were also assessed for thigh muscle atrophy, extension deficit≥2°, quality of walking, PPLP1 and subjective IKDC scores. The type and frequency of complications and their frequency was documented. The above-mentioned parameters were analyzed in 3 different groups: rigid brace in full extension, articulated brace (0°-90° for first 3 weeks then 0-120°) or no brace. RESULTS The analysis included 969 patients. Rehabilitation started at 4.5±2.9 days after surgery and ended at 32.4±3.0 days postoperative. At the beginning, flexion was lower in patients with a rigid brace (P<0.01). There was no difference in the frequency or severity of complications between the three study groups, nor was there a significant difference in the clinical outcomes listed above. CONCLUSION Postoperative bracing after ACLR has not beneficial effect on clinical outcomes and the complication rate. Patients who wore the rigid brace had limited flexion early on.

Abstract
The evolution of trace metal pollution on the Barcelona city continental shelf during the last few decades was studied by analyzing the historical records of trace metals in sediment cores and surface sediment samples taken at the same locations in 1987 and in 2008. Polluted surface samples taken in 1987 reached enrichment factors of up to 490 for Hg, about 40 for Pb and Cd, and about 17 for Zn, Cr and Cu. The data show a decline of up to one order of magnitude in the trace metal content of surface sediments during the last few decades, with maximum enrichment factors of between 20 and 30 for Hg and Cd and between 5 and 12 for Zn, Cr, Pb and Cu. Although present-day pollution is still significant, it is evident that environmental regulations that are in place, including the operation since 1979 of wastewater treatment plants built in the Besòs River watershed, have drastically reduced the pollution levels in this highly populated and industrialized Mediterranean area. However, water discharge during heavy rain events exceeds the treatment capacity of the existing facilities, leading to the maintenance of still high levels of metals in sediments of the Barcelona city shelf.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the feasibility of sentinel node biopsy (SNB) in ductal and lobular invasive breast cancer, a group of tumors known as special histologic type (SHT) of breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between January 1997 and July 2008, 2253 patients from 6 affiliated hospitals underwent SNB who had early breast cancer and clinically negative axilla. The patients' data were collected in a multicenter database. For lymphatic mapping, all patients received an intralesional dose of radiocolloid Tc-99m (4mCi in 0.4 mL saline), at least two hours before the surgical procedure. SNB was performed by physicians from the same nuclear medicine department in all cases. RESULTS Of the 2253 patients in the database, the SN identification rate was 94.5% (no radiotracer migration in 123 patients), and positive sentinel node prevalence was 22%. SHT was reported in 144 patients (6.4%) of the whole series. In this subgroup, migration of radiotracer was unsuccessful in 8 patients (identification rate was 94.4%) and SNs were positive in 7.4%. SN positivity prevalence in these tumors was variable across the subtypes. Higher probability of lymphatic spread seemed to be related to tumor invasiveness (20% of positivity in micropapillary, 15% in cribriform subtypes, and 0% in adenoid-cystic). CONCLUSION Sentinel node biopsy is feasible in special histologic subtypes of breast carcinoma with a good identification rate. Lower migration rates, however, might be associated with special histologic features (colloid subtype). Complete axillary dissection after a positive sentinel node cannot be omitted in patients with SHT breast cancer because they can be associated with further axillary disease; the reported very low incidence of axillary metastases would justify avoiding axillary dissection only in the adenoid-cystic subtype.

Abstract
The finding of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in particles sinking to the deep northwestern Mediterranean Sea confirms the role of the latter as ballast for the transfer of pollutants to the deep sea. The transfer of particulate matter down to the deep is enhanced during atmosphere-driven, high-energy physical oceanographic processes like dense shelf water cascading (DSWC), which is caused by winter surface heat losses and evaporation. Here we present data from samples collected during winter 2012, when dense shelf water formation and subsequent cascading triggered the flushing of large amounts of PFASs through a submarine canyon to depths in excess of 1000 m. The finding of quantifiable concentrations of long-chain PFOA, PFOS and PFNA substances and significantly high concentrations of the short-chain substances PFHxA and PFBA indicates that these compounds, sorbed onto particulate matter, are quickly and directly transferred to the ocean's interior, thus highlighting the role of DSWC in removing those pollutants from the coastal ocean. Eventually, uncertainties about our results arising from the limited number of samples available are counterbalanced by their intrinsic value as intense DSWC events, like the one in 2012, occur only every 5-7 years in the study area, which seriously restricts sampling opportunities. Our results add PFASs to the list of persistent organic pollutants like polychlorinated biphenyls, chlorobenzenes or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons known to be conveyed to the deep marine environment.

Abstract
PERSEUS project aims to identify the most relevant pressures exerted on the ecosystems of the Southern European Seas (SES), highlighting knowledge and data gaps that endanger the achievement of SES Good Environmental Status (GES) as mandated by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). A complementary approach has been adopted, by a meta-analysis of existing literature on pressure/impact/knowledge gaps summarized in tables related to the MSFD descriptors, discriminating open waters from coastal areas. A comparative assessment of the Initial Assessments (IAs) for five SES countries has been also independently performed. The comparison between meta-analysis results and IAs shows similarities for coastal areas only. Major knowledge gaps have been detected for the biodiversity, marine food web, marine litter and underwater noise descriptors. The meta-analysis also allowed the identification of additional research themes targeting research topics that are requested to the achievement of GES.

Abstract
The potential of fallen stock data to monitor the health status of animal populations has been noted in previous studies. However, further research is required to implement these systems for surveillance. This work presents a novel approach to determining the baselines associated with bovine fallen stock, comparing patterns between subpopulations and identifying subpopulations in which an abnormal event may occur. This study was based on data from 193,873 disposal visits carried out between 2004 and 2012 across a total of 2,991 bovine farms. Proxy measurements such as the number of collections carried out and the weight of carcasses collected were used. Both outcomes were aggregated weekly at different geographical scales for three production types (beef cattle, dairy cattle and heifer fattening). The analysis of these data combined autoregressive integrated moving average modelling and hierarchical time series methods.The three production types exhibited historical baselines that differed notably from one another. Based on the 757 beef cattle farms monitored, the mean number of collections registered per week at the regional level was 37 (range: 10–83). This series was relatively constant over time and showed a marked yearly seasonality. In contrast, for the 426 dairy cattle farms the mean number of disposal visits registered weekly was 121 (range: 71–180), showing half-yearly and yearly seasonality and a marked increase over the period monitored. From the 1,808 heifer fattening farms the mean number of disposal visits was 248 (range: 166–357) and the pattern presented a marked alternating trend over time. These patterns were assessed and compared at regional, provincial, county and municipal levels. The use of hierarchical time series approaches appeared to be a useful tool for comparing the patterns within different subpopulations over time as well as for assessing the spatial extent to which various abnormal events could be detected.

Abstract
Uncontrolled dumping of anthropogenic waste in rivers regulated by dams has created contaminated deposits in reservoirs that have remained unidentified for decades. The Flix Reservoir is located in the Ebro River, the second largest river flowing into the NW Mediterranean, has been affected by residue dumping from a chlor-alkali electrochemical plant for decades. High-resolution seismic profiles, bathymetric data, surficial sediment samples and sediment cores were obtained in the Flix Reservoir to study the characteristics of the deposit accumulated by this dumping. These data were used to reconstruct the waste deposit history. Since the construction of the Flix Dam in 1948, more than 3.6×10(5) t of industrial waste has accumulated in the reservoir generating a delta-like deposit formed by three sediment lobes of fine-grained material highly contaminated by Hg, Cd, Zn and Cr (max: 640, 26, 420 and 750 mg kg(-1), respectively). This contamination was associated with the Hg that was used for the cathode in the electrochemical plant from 1949 and with the production of phosphorite derivatives from 1973. After the construction of two large dams only a few kilometres upstream during the 1960s, the solids discharged from the industrial complex became the main sediment source to the Flix Reservoir. The deposit has remained in the reservoir forming a delta that obstructs about 50% of the river water section. Its stability only depended on the flow retention by the Flix Dam. At present, this contaminated waste deposit is being removed from the water reservoir as it is a cause of concern for the environment and for human health downriver.

Abstract
The offshore displacement of commercial bottom trawling has raised concerns about the impact of this destructive fishing practice on the deep seafloor, which is in general characterized by lower resilience than shallow water regions. This study focuses on the flanks of La Fonera (or Palamós) submarine canyon in the Northwestern Mediterranean, where an intensive bottom trawl fishery has been active during several decades in the 400–800 m depth range. To explore the degree of alteration of surface sediments (0–50 cm depth) caused by this industrial activity, fishing grounds and control (untrawled) sites were sampled along the canyon flanks with an interface multicorer. Sediment cores were analyzed to obtain vertical profiles of sediment grain-size, dry bulk density, organic carbon content and concentration of the radionuclide 210Pb. At control sites, surface sediments presented sedimentological characteristics typical of slope depositional systems, including a topmost unit of unconsolidated and bioturbated material overlying sediments progressively compacted with depth, with consistently high 210Pb inventories and exponential decaying profiles of 210Pb concentrations. Sediment accumulation rates at these untrawled sites ranged from 0.3 to 1.0 cm y−1. Sediment properties at most trawled sites departed from control sites and the sampled cores were characterized by denser sediments with lower 210Pb surface concentrations and inventories that indicate widespread erosion of recent sediments caused by trawling gears. Other alterations of the physical sediment properties, including thorough mixing or grain-size sorting, as well as organic carbon impoverishment, were also visible at trawled sites. This work contributes to the growing realization of the capacity of bottom trawling to alter the physical properties of surface sediments and affect the seafloor integrity over large spatial scales of the deep-sea.

Abstract
Molecular characterization of radical prostatectomy specimens after systemic therapy may identify a gene expression profile for resistance to therapy. This study assessed tumor cells from patients with prostate cancer participating in a phase II neoadjuvant docetaxel and androgen deprivation trial to identify mediators of resistance. Transcriptional level of 93 genes from a docetaxel-resistant prostate cancer cell lines microarray study was analyzed by TaqMan low-density arrays in tumors from patients with high-risk localized prostate cancer (36 surgically treated, 28 with neoadjuvant docetaxel + androgen deprivation). Gene expression was compared between groups and correlated with clinical outcome. VIM, AR and RELA were validated by immunohistochemistry. CD44 and ZEB1 expression was tested by immunofluorescence in cells and tumor samples. Parental and docetaxel-resistant castration-resistant prostate cancer cell lines were tested for epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers before and after docetaxel exposure. Reversion of EMT phenotype was investigated as a docetaxel resistance reversion strategy. Expression of 63 (67.7%) genes differed between groups (P < 0.05), including genes related to androgen receptor, NF-κB transcription factor, and EMT. Increased expression of EMT markers correlated with radiologic relapse. Docetaxel-resistant cells had increased EMT and stem-like cell markers expression. ZEB1 siRNA transfection reverted docetaxel resistance and reduced CD44 expression in DU-145R and PC-3R. Before docetaxel exposure, a selected CD44(+) subpopulation of PC-3 cells exhibited EMT phenotype and intrinsic docetaxel resistance; ZEB1/CD44(+) subpopulations were found in tumor cell lines and primary tumors; this correlated with aggressive clinical behavior. This study identifies genes potentially related to chemotherapy resistance and supports evidence of the EMT role in docetaxel resistance and adverse clinical behavior in early prostate cancer.

Abstract
Submarine canyons are morphological incisions into continental margins that act as major conduits of sediment from shallow- to deep-sea regions. However, the exact mechanisms involved in sediment transfer within submarine canyons are still a subject of investigation. Several studies have provided direct information about contemporary sedimentary processes in submarine canyons that suggests different modes of transport and various triggering mechanisms. Storm-induced turbidity currents and enhanced off-shelf advection, hyperpycnal flows and failures of recently deposited fluvial sediments, dense shelf-water cascading, canyon-flank failures, and trawling-induced resuspension largely dominate present-day sediment transfer through canyons. Additionally, internal waves periodically resuspend ephemeral deposits within canyons and contribute to dispersing particles or retaining and accumulating them in specific regions. These transport processes commonly deposit sediments in the upper- and middle-canyon reaches for decades or centuries before being completely or partially flushed farther down-canyon by large sediment failures.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction: The pathogenesis of DLBCL is both complex and heterogeneous, and pathogenetic mechanisms remain largely unknown. A clinical index known as the international prognostic index (IPI) remains the ‘gold-standard’ for predicting response to therapy and overall survival; however, more recently, several groups have reported the utility of gene expression arrays to sub-classify patients and predict outcome. We sought to interrogate a series of biomarkers with multiplex quantitative immunofluorescence (QIF) to construct novel clinical algorithms which predict treatment response and overall survival (OS) post-treatment in a series of patients with DLBCL.
Methods: Clinical data including outcome and tissue microarray (TMA) cores for 149 patients were evaluated with QIF for association with response to standard chemotherapy and rituximab. Multiplex QIF with CRI Nuance imaging software for MUM1, Ki67, CD20, CD34, BCL2, BCL6, CD68, VEGF, HLA-DR, and NfKB. Kaplan-Meier survival function curves, hazard ratio and concordance index (CoI) were used to associate marker expression with OS and response to therapy.
Results: The cohort demographics for the 149 patients include a median age of 61 years; 43% female, 57% male and an IPI breakdown: Stage1 (30%), II (23%), III (25%) and IV (22%). Both low IPI and female gender were reliable predictors of good overall survival (p<0.001, respectively). 67 of 149 patients had complete clinical and QIF data for subsequent analysis. Increasing tumoral-CD68 positive cells were associated with a poor objective response to treatment (complete/partial vs. none; p=0.019). For OS, increasing levels of VEGF, on a continuous scale, were predictive of poor OS (VEGF: HR 1.23, 95%CI [.98–1.54], p=0.010, CoI 0.34 and when a cut-point of 0.18 is applied, the significance of VEGF improves, p=0.005. By contrast only the BCL6 cut-point (>3.84, p=0.003) was found to be significant in predicting poor OS. An expanded patient cohort will be needed to confirm both results, especially the BCL6 expression profiles. Optimal multivariate model to predict OS consisted of: Age, IPI index and VEGF levels (CoI 0.78, p=0.001), compared to a model with just age and IPI (CoI 0.72, p=0.02).
Conclusion: CD68, VEGF and BCL6 appear to be useful markers for understanding patterns of response and outcome for patients with DLBCL, post-treatment. A combined age, IPI and VEGF clinical algorithm may guide future treatment options for selected individuals.

BACKGROUND Apoptosis resistance of T-cells is considered an abnormality of immune pathways in Crohn's disease (CD). It has been previously shown that corticosteroids induce apoptosis of cells involved in inflammation. Thus, our aim was to assess the apoptosis of mononuclear cells and pro/antiinflammatory cytokines in the intestinal mucosa of patients with active CD, related to steroid response, and identify cellular and molecular factors that may predict this response to therapy. METHODS Patients with CD (n = 26), ulcerative colitis (UC) (n = 32), and controls (n = 10) were prospectively studied with mucosal biopsies before and 7-10 days after corticosteroid treatment. Immunophenotype and apoptosis of T and B lymphocytes, plasma cells, and macrophages were assessed by flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence. The cytokine expression pattern was evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS Apoptosis resistance of T and B lymphocytes was observed only in steroid-refractory and -dependent CD patients as compared to responsive patients (P = 0.032; P = 0.004, respectively), being evident after steroid treatment. Interleukin (IL)-10 was markedly increased at baseline in steroid-responsive patients compared to the nonresponders (P = 0.006; sensitivity: 88.8%; specificity: 66.6% to predict steroid response). CONCLUSIONS Apoptosis resistance of mucosal T and B cells in steroid-refractory and -dependent CD patients appears during the evolution of the acute phase, limiting its clinical application as a predictor marker. In contrast, increased expression of IL-10 at an early stage of active steroid-sensitive CD patients supports its usefulness at predicting a good steroid response. Steroid-dependent and -refractory CD patients share similar molecular and cellular pathophysiological mechanisms.

Abstract
A suitable sampling technology to identify species and to estimate population dynamics based on individual counts at different temporal levels in relation to habitat variations is increasingly important for fishery management and biodiversity studies. In the past two decades, as interest in exploring the oceans for valuable resources and in protecting these resources from overexploitation have grown, the number of cabled (permanent) submarine multiparametric platforms with video stations has increased. Prior to the development of seafloor observatories, the majority of autonomous stations were battery powered and stored data locally. The recently installed low-cost, multiparametric, expandable, cabled coastal Seafloor Observatory (OBSEA), located 4 km off of Vilanova i la Gertrú, Barcelona, at a depth of 20 m, is directly connected to a ground station by a telecommunication cable; thus, it is not affected by the limitations associated with previous observation technologies. OBSEA is part of the European Multidisciplinary Seafloor Observatory (EMSO) infrastructure, and its activities are included among the Network of Excellence of the European Seas Observatory NETwork (ESONET). OBSEA enables remote, long-term, and continuous surveys of the local ecosystem by acquiring synchronous multiparametric habitat data and bio-data with the following sensors: Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) sensors for salinity, temperature, and pressure; Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) for current speed and direction, including a turbidity meter and a fluorometer (for the determination of chlorophyll concentration); a hydrophone; a seismometer; and finally, a video camera for automated image analysis in relation to species classification and tracking. Images can be monitored in real time, and all data can be stored for future studies. In this article, the various components of OBSEA are described, including its hardware (the sensors and the network of marine and land nodes), software (data acquisition, transmission, processing, and storage), and multiparametric measurement (habitat and bio-data time series) capabilities. A one-month multiparametric survey of habitat parameters was conducted during 2009 and 2010 to demonstrate these functions. An automated video image analysis protocol was also developed for fish counting in the water column, a method that can be used with cabled coastal observatories working with still images. Finally, bio-data time series were coupled with data from other oceanographic sensors to demonstrate the utility of OBSEA in studies of ecosystem dynamics.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to evaluate epidemiological data derived from 2735 canine uroliths received by Hill's Pet Nutrition from Spain and Portugal between January 2004 and December 2006. The results of quantitative analysis from Minnesota Urolith Center (MUC) were compared with that from other countries and interrelations of mineral composition, age, breed, and gender were determined. The most frequent calculus was calcium oxalate (38.1%) followed by struvite (32.9%). Eighty-three breeds plus crossbreeds (25%) were identified. In all of them, but Dalmatians, calcium oxalate and struvite accounted for 71-78%. The mean age of urolith appearance was 7.6 years. There was a significant difference in the frequency of different uroliths composition among the six most common breeds presenting urolithiasis in Spain and Portugal (Yorkshire terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, Cocker Spaniel, Poodle, Shih Tzu and Dalmatian). This is the first report on xanthine urolithiasis found in Spain. Prevalence of cystine calculi was significantly lower (3.2%) than that reported previously in parts of Spain (26%).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To establish the influence of the type of surgical technique, competitive level, type of sport and the time before returning to competition on the reinjury rate after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery. METHODS The authors followed-up 540 competitive sportspeople who had undergone ACL surgery via patellar or hamstring tendon autograft (HTA) techniques in 2003 and 2004. The sportspeople (all of whom had competed at a regional or higher level) were asked to fill out a questionnaire during their fourth postoperative year. RESULTS The 298 respondees (reply rate: 55.1%) had the same characteristics as the initial (operated) population. The reinjury rates after HTA and patellar tendon autograft (PTA) were 12.7 and 6.1%, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between these two values (P=0.14). Age and gender were not correlated with the frequency of reinjury. The reinjury rate rose slightly with increasing competitive level (regional level: 8.1%; national level: 10.4%; international level: 12.5%) but these differences were not statistically significant. Soccer had the highest reinjury rate (20.8%). Regardless of the surgical technique, sportspeople returning to competition within seven months of surgery had a greater risk of reinjury than those returning after this time point (15.3 versus 5.2%, P=0.014). The risk dropped from 13.9 to 2.6% (P=0.047) for PTA and from 16.6 to 7.6% (P=0.2) for HTA. Of the four reinjuries in sportspeople returning to competition with the first six months postoperative, three occurred within one month of resumption. CONCLUSION Post-HTA reinjury rates are higher than post-PTA rates but the difference is not statistically significant. For sportspeople at a regional or higher level, the time interval before the return to competition has an influence on the risk of reinjury.

Abstract
Introduction: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and malignant of adult glial tumors. Despite best standard of care including surgical resection, radiation and chemotherapy (e.g. temozolomide), the median survival remains approximately 12 – 15 months, with fewer than 25% of patients surviving up to 2 years and less than 10% of patients surviving up to 5 years. We sought to identify a preliminary set of baseline tissue-based DNA and protein features which may reflect growth mechanisms responsible for disease progression, and overall survival (OS).
Methods: Formalin fixed paraffin embedded specimens from 54 patients (44 Astrocytoma (including 14 GBM), 6 oligodendroglioma and 4 mixed) with outcome data and a median follow-up of 3 years were evaluated using dual-color DNA FISH for PTEN and EGFR. A multispectral immunofluorescent (IF) assay was used as previously described (Cordon-Cardo et al., 2007) to evaluate Ki67, PTEN, and P-AKT. Feature performance was univariately assessed using Kaplan-Meier survival curves.
Results: A >10% Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) for PTEN (p-value <0.05) but not EGFR amplification / polysomy was associated with decreased OS in the total cohort. By comparison, the combination of PTEN LOH and EGFR amplification/polysomy in the GBM-only group (n=12, complete data files) was associated with improved survival (p-value 0.03). By quantitative IF, increasing levels of KI67 were associated with shortened OS (p-value 0.004) in the total cohort.
Conclusions: The incorporation of DNA FISH and quantitative IF is useful for developing a biologic baseline for understanding disease course in malignant gliomas. PTEN LOH and EGFR amplification / polysomy in GBM may suggest a pathway mechanism for favorable response.

Abstract
Injection technique and radiocolloid size are two critical parameters that must be carefully selected according to patient presentation and lesion appearance for accurate sentinel node detection in breast cancer. Scintigraphic detection and intraoperative localization are dependent on these parameters. The present clinical case illustrates how much deep intralesional tracer injection bears on our capacity to detect extra-axillary sentinel nodes and how the use of smaller-size radiocolloids may sometimes facilitate sentinel node detection.

Abstract
Dynamics of biological processes on the deep-sea floor are traditionally thought to be controlled by vertical sinking of particles from the euphotic zone at a seasonal scale. However, little is known about the influence of lateral particle transport from continental margins to deep-sea ecosystems. To address this question, we report here how the formation of dense shelf waters and their subsequent downslope cascade, a climate induced phenomenon, affects the population of the deep-sea shrimp Aristeus antennatus. We found evidence that strong currents associated with intense cascading events correlates with the disappearance of this species from its fishing grounds, producing a temporary fishery collapse. Despite this initial negative effect, landings increase between 3 and 5 years after these major events, preceded by an increase of juveniles. The transport of particulate organic matter associated with cascading appears to enhance the recruitment of this deep-sea living resource, apparently mitigating the general trend of overexploitation. Because cascade of dense water from continental shelves is a global phenomenon, we anticipate that its influence on deep-sea ecosystems and fisheries worldwide should be larger than previously thought.

Abstract
The continental slope is a steep, narrow fringe separating the coastal zone from the deep ocean. During low sea-level stands, slides and dense, sediment-laden flows erode the outer continental shelf and the continental slope, leading to the formation of submarine canyons that funnel large volumes of sediment and organic matter from shallow regions to the deep ocean(1). During high sea-level stands, such as at present, these canyons still experience occasional sediment gravity flows(2-5), which are usually thought to be triggered by sediment failure or river flooding. Here we present observations from a submarine canyon on the Gulf of Lions margin, in the northwest Mediterranean Sea, that demonstrate that these flows can also be triggered by dense shelf water cascading (DSWC)-a type of current that is driven solely by seawater density contrast. Our results show that DSWC can transport large amounts of water and sediment, reshape submarine canyon floors and rapidly affect the deep-sea environment. This cascading is seasonal, resulting from the formation of dense water by cooling and/or evaporation, and occurs on both high- and low-latitude continental margins(6-8). DSWC may therefore transport large amounts of sediment and organic matter to the deep ocean. Furthermore, changes in the frequency and intensity of DSWC driven by future climate change may have a significant impact on the supply of organic matter to deep-sea ecosystems and on the amount of carbon stored on continental margins and in ocean basins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The indication for sentinel node biopsy (SNB) has not been fully established yet for patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). AIM To relate the conversion rate to invasive carcinoma with sentinel node positivity in high risk DCIS, and to refine the clinical presentation analysis in order to better select patients for SNB. For this purpose, a risk score was devised. METHODS From 1998 to 2005, 151 high-risk DCIS patients from six clinical centres were included in a prospective sentinel node database. The conversion rate to invasive carcinoma was 39%. Ten of 142 (7%) successful SNBs showed a positive sentinel node (eight micrometastatic). The sentinel node was positive in 1% of pure DCIS, in 5.5% of DCIS with micro-invasion, and in 19.5% of invasive carcinoma. RESULTS Both clinical presentation and corresponding risk score were closely related to conversion to invasive carcinoma. The association of risk score and sentinel node positivity approached but did not reach statistical significance (P=0.06); therefore a subset of further selected higher risk patients could not be defined. CONCLUSION The relevance of SNB positivity cannot be overlooked in high-risk DCIS patients, however, because SNB is not free from morbidity and cost, more studies are needed to refine its final indication.

Abstract
The p63 gene, a homolog of the tumor suppressor gene TP53, maps to chromosome 3q27-28, a region frequently displaying genomic amplification in squamous cell carcinomas. p63 is expressed in a variety of epithelial tissues and has been reported to be critical for the normal development of stratified epithelia, including skin epidermis. In a previous study, the authors reported the expression of p63 in occasional cells in the germinal center of lymph nodes and also observed p63 expression in B-cell lymphomas, among other tumor types surveyed in that analysis. The present study was conducted to further analyze the potential clinical significance of identifying p63 expression, assessing a larger cohort of well-characterized patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) (n = 172 cases) and a panel of established lymphoma cell lines. p63 expression at the microanatomic detail was examined by immunohistochemistry using a monoclonal antibody (clone 4A4), while distinction of p63 isoforms was analyzed by Western blotting and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction using isoform-specific primers. The authors found that a subset of DLBCL (32% of cases) expressed p63 in the nuclei of neoplastic lymphocytes. Examination of the different p63 isoforms revealed that the DeltaNp63 species was expressed by only one cell line, while the other p63 isoforms were found in most cell lines analyzed. The authors also observed that p63 expression correlated with high proliferative index, as assessed by Ki-67 immunostaining. Even though in univariate analysis p63 expression did not correlate with overall survival, the association of p63 with increased proliferative index suggests its involvement in DLBCL tumor progression.
