Structure and stability of different triplets involving artificial nucleobases: clues for the formation of semisynthetic triple helical DNA. Sci Rep 2023; 13:19246. Abstract
A triple helical DNA can control gene expression, help in homologous recombination, induce mutations to facilitate DNA repair mechanisms, suppress oncogene formations, etc. However, the structure and function of semisynthetic triple helical DNA are not known. To understand this, various triplets formed between eight artificial nucleobases (P, Z, J, V, B, S, X, and K) and four natural DNA bases (G, C, A, and T) are studied herein by employing a reliable density functional theoretic (DFT) method. Initially, the triple helix-forming artificial nucleobases interacted with the duplex DNA containing GC and AT base pairs, and subsequently, triple helix-forming natural bases (G and C) interacted with artificial duplex DNA containing PZ, JV, BS, and XK base pairs. Among the different triplets formed in the first category, the C-JV triplet is found to be the most stable with a binding energy of about - 31 kcal/mol. Similarly, among the second category of triplets, the Z-GC and V-GC triplets are the most stable. Interestingly, Z-GC and V-GC are found to be isoenergetic with a binding energy of about - 30 kcal/mol. The C-JV, and Z-GC or V-GC triplets are about 12-14 kcal/mol more stable than the JV and GC base pairs respectively. Microsolvation of these triplets in 5 explicit water molecules further enhanced their stability by 16-21 kcal/mol. These results along with the consecutive stacking of the C-JV triplet (C-JV/C-JV) data indicate that the synthetic nucleobases can form stable semisynthetic triple helical DNA. However, consideration of a full-length DNA containing one or more semisynthetic bases or base pairs is necessary to understand the formation of semisynthetic DNA in living cells.

Abstract
Herein, electrochemically assisted dissolution-deposition (EADD) is utilized over a three-electrode assembly to prepare an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Cyclic voltammetry is performed to yield atomistic loading of platinum (Pt) over SnS2 nanostructures via Pt dissolution from the counter electrode (CE). Astonishingly, the working electrode (WE) swept at 50 mV/s is found to compel Pt CE to experience 1000-3000 mV/s. The effect of different potential scan rates at the WE have provided insight into the change in Pt dissolution and its deposition behaviour over SnS2 in three electrode assembly. However, uncontrolled overpotentials at CE in a three-electrode assembly made Pt dissolution-deposition behavior complex. Here, for the first time, we have demonstrated bi-potentiodynamic control for dissolution deposition of Pt in four-electrode assembly over Nickel (Ni) foam. The dual cyclic voltammetry is applied to achieve better control and efficiency of the EADD process, engendering it as a pragmatically versatile and scalable synthesis technique.

Abstract
The functionality of a semisynthetic DNA in the biological environment will depend on the base pair nature of its complementary base pairs. To understand this, base pair interactions between complementary bases of recently proposed eight second-generation artificial nucleobases are studied herein by considering their rare tautomeric conformations and a dispersion-corrected density functional theoretic method. It is found that the binding energies of two hydrogen-bonded complementary base pairs are more negative than those of the three hydrogen-bonded base pairs. However, as the former base pairs are endothermic, the semisynthetic duplex DNA would involve the latter base pairs.

Abstract
Ionic liquid (IL) is now being considered as a novel contender in the development of highly conducting polymer electrolytes rather than a solvent. It has a significant impact on the electrochemical performance of polymer electrolytes. This study emphasizes the significance of low viscosity IL dispersion within a polymer (PVA) matrix. The electrical, structural and photoelectrochemical properties of the IL-doped polymer electrolyte are discussed in detail. These highly conducting IL doped solid polymer electrolytes show promise towards the development of highly efficient Supercapacitors.

Abstract
The COVID-19 infection is increasing at a rapid rate, with the availability of limited number of testing kits. Therefore, the development of COVID-19 testing kits is still an open area of research. Recently, many studies have shown that chest Computed Tomography (CT) images can be used for COVID-19 testing, as chest CT images show a bilateral change in COVID-19 infected patients. However, the classification of COVID-19 patients from chest CT images is not an easy task as predicting the bilateral change is defined as an ill-posed problem. Therefore, in this paper, a deep transfer learning technique is used to classify COVID-19 infected patients. Additionally, a top-2 smooth loss function with cost-sensitive attributes is also utilized to handle noisy and imbalanced COVID-19 dataset kind of problems. Experimental results reveal that the proposed deep transfer learning-based COVID-19 classification model provides efficient results as compared to the other supervised learning models.

Abstract
Poly(vinylidene fluoride- co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) doped with zinc acetate polymer electrolytes have been prepared for electrochemical devices. Electrical conductivity ( σ) obtained from impedance analysis shows a maximum (σ = 4.83 × 10–4 S cm−1) for 25 wt% of salt concentration, while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirms the formation of composite electrolyte and information on the interaction of polymer matrix with the salt. Polarized optical microscopy shows the reduction in the crystallinity of polymer host due to salt doping which is also evidenced in the X-ray diffraction analysis of the samples. A sandwiched structure laboratory-scale supercapacitor has been fabricated using the highest conductivity polymer electrolyte film and activated graphene oxide electrode shows promising results.

Abstract
Ion conducting gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are being intensively studied for their potential applications in various electrochemical devices. The poly(vinyl alcohol)-based GPE films containing ammonium acetate (NH4CH3COO) salt have been studied for various concentrations of salt. The gel electrolyte films (GPEs) have been prepared using solution casting technique. Structural characterization carried out using X-ray diffraction reveals an increase in the amorphous nature of the samples on increasing salt concentration up to 70 wt%. The complexation of polymer and salt has been studied by Fourier-transform infrared analysis. Ionic conductivity of the GPEs has been found to increase with salt concentration and reaches an optimum for an intermediate concentration. The room temperature conductivity isotherm exhibits a maximum in conductivity of 2.64 × 10−4 Scm−1 for 65 wt% salt concentration. The temperature dependence of ionic conductivity exhibits a combination of Arrhenius and Vogel–Tamman–Fulcher behavior. Ion transport in the electrolyte system has been explored using dielectric response of the material and the observed variation in conductivity is suitably correlated to the change in charge carrier concentration and mobility of charge carriers.

Abstract
The applicability of the statistical tools coupled with artificial intelligence techniques was tested to optimize the critical medium components for the production of extracellular cholesterol oxidase (COD; an enzyme of commercial interest) from Streptomyces rimosus MTCC 10792. The initial medium component screening was performed using Placket-Burman design with yeast extract, dextrose, starch and ammonium carbonate as significant factors. Response surface methodology (RSM) was attempted to develop a statistical model with a significant coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.89847), followed by model optimization using Genetic Algorithm (GA). RSM-GA based optimization approach predicted that the combination of yeast extract, dextrose, starch and ammonium carbonate at concentrations 0.99, 0.8, 0.1, and 0.05 g/100 ml respectively, has resulted in 3.6 folds increase in COD production (5.41 U/ml) in comparison with the un-optimized medium (1.5 U/ml). COD was purified 10.34 folds having specific activity of 12.37 U/mg with molecular mass of 54 kDa. The enzyme was stable at pH 7.0 and 40 °C temperature. The apparent Michaelis constant (Km) and Vmax values of COD were 0.043 mM and 2.21 μmol/min/mg, respectively. This is the first communication reporting RSM-GA based medium optimization, purification and characterization of COD by S. rimosus isolated from the forest soil of eastern India.

Abstract
The sole aim of the present article is to develop an ionic liquid (IL)-doped solid polymer electrolyte for an electrochemical double-layer capacitor (EDLC). A solution cast technique was adopted to develop a solid polymer electrolyte of poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) as host polymer and low-viscosity IL (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate) as dopant. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement showed a six orders of magnitude enhancement in conductivity ( σ) by IL doping. A linear sweep voltammetric investigation of the electrolyte films exhibited a good electrochemical stability window of 3.6 V. Polarized optical microscopy of the synthesized films revealed a reduction in crystallinity by IL doping. Infrared spectroscopy further affirms the composite nature of the film. The maximum conductivity value of 2.65 mS/cm is obtained for 80% of the ionic-doped system. Using maximum conductivity film and porous carbon-based electrodes, we have developed EDLCs that show a specific capacitance value of 2.36 F/g.

Abstract
8-Nitroguanine (8-nitroG) formed due to nitration of guanine base of DNA plays an important role in mutagenesis and carcinogenesis. In the present contribution, state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations using M06-2X density functional and domain-based local pair natural orbital-coupled cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) methods have been carried out to investigate the mechanism of reaction of •OH radical with 8-nitroG leading to the formation of 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) (one of the most mutagenic and carcinogenic derivatives of guanine) in gas phase and aqueous media. Calculations of barrier energies and rate constants involved in the addition reactions of •OH radical at different sites of 8-nitroguanine show that C8 and C2 sites are the most and least reactive sites, respectively. Relative stability and Boltzmann populations of adducts show that the adduct formed at the C8 site occurs predominantly in equilibrium. Our calculations reveal that 8-nitroG is very reactive toward •OH radical and is converted readily into 8-oxoG when attacked by •OH radicals, in agreement with available experimental observations.

Abstract
Sexually transmitted diseases like trichomoniasis along with opportunistic fungal infections like candidiasis are major global health burden in female reproductive health. In this context a novel non-nitroimidazole class of substituted carbamothioic amine-1-carbothioic thioanhydride series was designed, synthesized, evaluated for trichomonacidal and fungicidal activities, and was found to be more active than the standard drug Metronidazole (MTZ). Compounds were trichomonicidal in the MIC ranges of 4.77-294.1 μM and 32.46-735.20 μM against MTZ-susceptible and -resistant strains, respectively. Further, compounds inhibited the growth of at least two out of ten fungal strains tested at MIC of 7.50-240.38 μM. The most active compound (20) of this series was 3.8 and 9.5 fold more active than the MTZ against the two Trichomonas strains tested. Compound 20 also significantly inhibited the sulfhydryl groups present over Trichomonas vaginalis and was found to be more active than the MTZ in vivo. Further, a docking analysis carried out with cysteine proteases supported their thiol inhibiting ability and preliminary pharmacokinetic study has shown good distribution and systemic clearance.

Abstract
Weather factors play an important role in occurrence of thrips on mango. Keeping this in view, the present investigation was set out to assess the thrips population dynamics using humid thermal index, based on data sets from 22 fixed plot mango orchards in and around Lucknow. Results revealed that the highest thrips population of 3.36/panicle was recorded in Kakori (Fixed plot -I) orchard, which was followed by 2.4 and 2.06 at CISH III block and Kanar (Fixed II) respectively during the year 2013, whereas corresponding values were 4.05, 3.08 and 2.50 at CISH Block III, CISH Bolck II and Allupur respectively during 2014. The frequency distribution explained that the thrips population of <2 /panicle was widely distributed with highest frequency level. The humid thermal ratio ranged from 1.44 to 2.27 and 1.20 to 2.34 during 2013 and 2014 respectively across standard meteorological weeks. The peak thrips incidence was 6.18 /panicle during 2013 and 4.67/panicle during 2014, the corresponding values of humid thermal ratio were 1.47 and 2.05 respectively. The positive correlation was found between humid thermal ratio and thrips population dynamics during 2013 (r = 0.52**) and 2014 (r = 0.72**). Pooled data showed significant and positive correlation between humid thermal ratio and thrips population. Pooled analysis had explained up to 94 per cent of variation with exponential model (Thrips population = 0.007e2.778HTR, R2 = 0.94**) and suggested that this index might be used in understanding the mango thrips population dynamics under subtropical environmental condition.

Abstract
Chemical attenuation of the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-sensitive anaerobes Trichomonas vaginalis, which is the most prevalent non-viral sexually transmitted infection, and two often coexisting vaginal infections, namely Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus, which are opportunistic reproductive tract infections, was attempted with novel ammonium salts of carbamodithioic acid through inhibition of free thiols. In vitro and in vivo efficacies of the designed compounds were evaluated as topical vaginal microbicides. Five compounds showed exceptional activity against drug-resistant and -susceptible strains with negligible toxicity to host (HeLa) cells in vitro in comparison with the standard vaginal microbicide nonoxynol-9 (N-9), without disturbing the normal vaginal flora (i.e. Lactobacillus). The compounds significantly inhibited the cytopathic effects of Trichomonas on HeLa cells in vitro with efficacies comparable with metronidazole (MTZ); however, their efficacy to rescue host cells from co-infection (protozoal and fungal) was greater than that of MTZ. The compounds inhibited β-haemolysis of red blood cells caused by Trichomonas and were found to be active in vivo in the mouse subcutaneous abscess assay. Some compounds rapidly immobilized human sperm. A mechanism involving inhibition of free thiols and consequently the cysteine proteases of T. vaginalis by the new compounds has been proposed. Thus, a unique scaffold of antimicrobial agents has been discovered that warrants further investigation for development as contraceptive vaginal microbicides.

Abstract
In an ongoing effort to discover an effective, topical, dual-function, non-surfactant contraceptive vaginal microbicide, a novel series of 2,2'-disulfanediylbis(3-(substituted-1-yl)propane-2,1-diyl) disubstituted-1-carbodithioates were designed by using a bioisosterism approach. Thirty-three compounds were synthesized, and interestingly, most demonstrated multiple activities: they were found to be spermicidal at a minimal effective concentration of 1-0.001 %, trichomonacidal against drug-susceptible and resistant Trichomonas strains at minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranges of 10.81-377.64 and 10.81-754.14 μM, respectively, and fungicidal at MIC 7.93-86.50 μM. These compounds were also found to be non-cytotoxic to human cervical (HeLa) epithelial cells and vaginal microflora (Lactobacilli) in vitro. The most promising compound, 2,2'-disulfanediylbis(3-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)propane-2,1-diyl)dipyrrolidine-1-carbodithioate (5), exhibited spermicidal activity 15-fold higher than that of the marketed spermicide Nonoxynol-9 (N-9) and also demonstrated microbicidal potency. To identify common structural features required for spermicidal activity, a 3D-QSAR analysis was carried out, as well as in vivo efficacy studies and fluorescent labeling studies to determine the biological targets of compound 5.

Abstract
Fungal keratitis is the major cause of vision loss worldwide. Amphotericin-B is considered as the drug of choice for fungal infections. However, its use in ophthalmic drug delivery is limited by the low precorneal residence at ocular surface as a result of blinking reflex, tear turnover and nasopharyngeal drainage. We report Amphotericin-B loaded lecithin/chitosan nanoparticles for prolonged ocular application. The prepared nanoparticles were in the size range of 161.9-230.5 nm, entrapment efficiency of 70-75%, theoretical drug loading of 5.71% with positive zeta potential of 26.6-38.3 mV. As demonstrated by antifungal susceptibility against Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigatus, nanoparticles were more effective than marketed formulation. They exhibited pronounced mucoadhesive properties. In-vivo pharmacokinetic studies in New Zealand albino rabbit eyes indicated improved bioavailablity (∼ 2.04 fold) and precorneal residence time (∼ 3.36 fold) by nanoparticles prepared from low molecular weight chitosan as compared with marketed formulation.

Abstract
Candida albicans is an opportunistic dimorphic pathogen that exists in both planktonic and biofilm phases causing deep-rooted infections in mainly immunocompromised patients. Antibodies are believed to play anti-Candida activity by different mechanisms, like inhibition of adhesion and neutralization of virulence-related antigens. Inhibition of adhesion is one of the important strategies to prevent Candida infections and biofilm formation. In this study, monoclonal antibody (MAb 7D7) against C. albicans biofilm cell surface antigen (47.2 kDa) was generated to determine the changes in adherence and viability of C. albicans. In this regard XTT assay was carried out in 30, 60, 90 min and 48 h (maturation time) time points using MAb 7D7 and it (MAb 7D7) was found to be effective against adhesion and the formation of C. albicans biofilm on polystyrene as well as monolayer of human epithelial cells (HeLa). This result may also prove to be a valuable addition to the reagents available to study C. albicans cell surface dynamics and interaction of the fungus with host cells.

Abstract
Novel series of 7-piperazinylquinolones with tetrazole derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial activity against various strains of Staphylococcus aureus. All the synthesized compounds showed significant in vitro antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria whereas some compounds displayed moderate activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Among all the synthesized compounds, compounds (6a-c, 6e-g, 6i-k, 6m, 6'f and 6'm) were found to be more effective with MIC ranging from (0.78-3.12 μg/mL) against S. aureus (ATCC-29213) than the control; ciprofloxacin (MIC = 25 μg/mL). Moreover, these analogues displayed no toxicity up to MIC = 0.39 μg/mL against mammalian cell line L-929. Furthermore, to correlate the biological activities of synthesized compounds with their 3D conformation, we attempted 3D-QSAR study.

Abstract
A series of 1-[(4-benzyloxyphenyl)-but-3-enyl]-1H-azoles has been identified as potent antitubercular agents against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Synthesis of compounds involved acid catalyzed ring-opening of cyclopropyl ring of phenyl cyclopropyl methanols followed by nucleophilic attack of the azoles on the carbocation intermediates. Several of the compounds 26, 34, and 36 exhibited significant antitubercular activities with MIC value as low as 1.56, 1.56, and 0.61 μg/mL, respectively, comparable to many standard drugs. These compounds were also screened against other strains of bacteria and fungi, and few of them showed good antifungal activity against A. fumigatus, responsible for lung infection.

Abstract
We present a theory for the dynamical ion structure factor (DISF) and ion stopping power in an unmagnetized collisional quantum plasma with degenerate electron fluids and nondegenerate strongly correlated ion fluids. Our theory is based on the fluctuation dissipation theorem and the quantum plasma dielectric constant that is deduced from a linearized viscoelastic quantum hydrodynamical (LVQHD) model. The latter incorporates the essential physics of quantum forces, which are associated with the quantum statistical pressure, electron-exchange, and electron-correlation effects, the quantum electron recoil effect caused by the dispersion of overlapping electron wave functions that control the dynamics of degenerate electron fluids, and the viscoelastic properties of strongly correlated ion fluids. Both degenerate electrons and nondegenerate strongly correlated ions are coupled with each other via the space charge electric force. Thus, our LVQHD theory is valid for a collisional quantum plasma at atomic scales with a wide range of the ion coupling parameter, the plasma composition, and plasma number densities that are relevant for compressed plasmas in laboratories (inertial confinement fusion schemes) and in astrophysical environments (e.g., warm dense matter and the cores of white dwarf stars). It is found that quantum electron effects and viscoelastic properties of strongly correlated ions significantly affect the features of the DISF and the ion stopping power (ISP). Unlike previous theories, which have studied ion correlations in terms of the ion coupling parameter, by neglecting the essential physics of collective effects that are competing among each other, we have here developed a method to evaluate the dependence of the plasma static and dynamical features in terms of individual parameters, like the Wigner-Seitz radius, the ion atomic number, and the ion temperature. It is found that due to the complex nature of charge screening in quantum plasmas, the ion coupling parameter alone cannot be a good measure for determining ion correlation effects in a collisional quantum plasma, and such a characteristic of a dense quantum plasma should be evaluated against each of the plasma parameters involved. The present investigation thus provides testable predictions for the DISF and ISP and is henceforth applicable to a wide range of compressed plasma categories ranging from laboratory to astrophysical warm dense matter.

Abstract
We present a theory for the quantum-electrodynamical (QED) parametric scattering instability of an intense photon pulse in an incoherent radiation background. The pump electromagnetic (EM) wave can decay into a scattered daughter EM wave and an acousticlike wave due to the QED vacuum polarization nonlinearity. By a linear instability analysis we obtain a nonlinear dispersion relation for the growth rate of the scattering instability. The nonlinear QED scattering instability can give rise to the exchange of orbital angular momentum between intense Laguerre-Gaussian mode photon pulses and the two daughter waves, which may be a useful method to detect the highly energetic photon gases existing in the vicinity of rotating dense bodies in the Universe, such as pulsars and magnetars. The observation of the scattered waves may reveal information about the twisted acoustic waves in the incoherent photon gas.

Abstract
To understand the influence of different hydrophobic amino acids at "a" and "d" positions of a heptad repeat sequence on antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and antiendotoxin properties, four 15-residue peptides with leucine (LRP), phenylalanine (FRP), valine (VRP), and alanine (ARP) residues at these positions were designed, synthesized, and characterized. Although valine is similarly hydrophobic to leucine and phenylalanine, VRP showed significantly lesser cytotoxicity than LRP and FRP; further, the replacement of leucines with valines at "a" and "d" positions of melittin-heptads drastically reduced its cytotoxicity. However, all four peptides exhibited significant antimicrobial activities that correlate well with their interactions with mammalian and bacterial cell membranes and the corresponding lipid vesicles. LRP most efficiently neutralized the LPS-induced pro-inflammatory mediators like NO, TNF-α, and IL-6 in macrophages followed by FRP, VRP, and ARP. The results could be useful for designing short antimicrobial and antiendotoxin peptides with understanding the basis of their activity.

Abstract
We show the existence of a twisted electrostatic ion-cyclotron (ESIC) wave carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) in a magnetized dusty plasma. For our purposes, we derive a 3D wave equation for the coupled ESIC and dust ion-acoustic (DIA) waves from the hydrodynamic equations that are composed of the continuity and momentum equations, together with Poisson's equation. The 3D wave equation reveals the formation of a braided or twisted ESIC wave structure carrying OAM. The braided or twisted ESIC wave structure can trap and transport plasma particles in magnetoplasmas, such as those in Saturn's F-ring and in the forthcoming magnetized dusty plasma experiments.

Abstract
We study the effects of ion-dust collisions and ion kinematic viscosities on the linear ion-acoustic instability as well as the nonlinear propagation of small-amplitude solitary waves and shocks (SWS) in a negative-ion plasma with immobile charged dusts. The existence of two linear ion modes, namely the "fast" and "slow" waves, is shown, and their properties are analyzed in the collisional negative-ion plasma. Using the standard reductive perturbation technique, we derive a modified Korteweg-de Vries-Burger (KdVB) equation which describes the evolution of small-amplitude SWS. The profiles of the latter are numerically examined with parameters relevant for laboratory and space plasmas where charged dusts may be positively or negatively charged. It is found that negative-ion plasmas containing positively charged dusts support the propagation of SWS with negative potential. However, the perturbations with both positive and negative potentials may exist when dusts are negatively charged. The results may be useful for the excitation of SWS in laboratory negative-ion plasmas as well as for observation in space plasmas where charged dusts may be positively or negatively charged.

Abstract
We present a generalized nonlinear theory for large-amplitude electrostatic (ES) ion shocks in collisional quantum plasmas composed of mildly coupled degenerate electron fluid of arbitrary degeneracy and nondegenerate strongly correlated ion fluid with arbitrary atomic number. For our purposes, we use the inertialess electron momentum equation including the electrostatic force, pressure gradient, and relevant quantum forces, as well as a generalized viscoelastic ion momentum (GVIM) equation for strongly correlated nondegenerate ions. The ion continuity equation, in the quasineutral approximation, then closes our nonlinear system of equations. When the electric field force is eliminated from the GVIM equation by using the inertialess electron momentum equation, we then obtain a GVIM and ion continuity equations, which exhibit nonlinear couplings between the ion number density and the ion fluid velocity. The pair of nonlinear equations is numerically solved to study the dynamics of arbitrarily-large-amplitude planar and nonplanar ES shocks arising from a balance between harmonic generation nonlinearities and the ion fluid viscosity for a wide range of plasma mass densities and ion atomic numbers that are relevant for the cores of giant planets (viz., Jupiter) and compact stars (viz., white dwarfs). Our numerical results reveal that the ES shock density profiles strongly depend on the plasma number density and composition (the atomic-number) parameters. Furthermore, ion density perturbations propagate with Mach numbers which significantly depend on the studied plasma fractional parameters. It is concluded that the dynamics of the ES shocks in the superdense degenerate plasma is quite different in the core of a white dwarf star from that in the lower density crust region.

Abstract
We present a fully nonlinear theory for dust acoustic (DA) shocks and DA solitary pulses in a strongly coupled dusty plasma, which have been recently observed experimentally by Heinrich et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 115002 (2009)], Teng et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 245005 (2009)], and Bandyopadhyay et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 065006 (2008)]. For this purpose, we use a generalized hydrodynamic model for the strongly coupled dust grains, accounting for arbitrary large-amplitude dust number density compressions and potential distributions associated with fully nonlinear nonstationary DA waves. Time-dependent numerical solutions of our nonlinear model compare favorably well with the recent experimental works (mentioned above) that have reported the formation of large-amplitude nonstationary DA shocks and DA solitary pulses in low-temperature dusty plasma discharges.

The results may be important for streaming instabilities involving ion dynamics in very dense plasmas.

Abstract
It is shown that the dynamics of amplitude-modulated compressional dispersive Alfvénic (CDA) waves in a collisional megnetoplasma is governed by a complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation. The nonlinear dispersion relation for the modulational instability of the CDA waves is derived and investigated numerically. It is found that the growth rate of the modulational instability decreases (increases) with the increase of the normalized electron-ion collision frequency α (the plasma β). The modulational instability criterion for the CGL equation is defined precisely and investigated numerically. The region of the modulational instability becomes narrower with the increase of α and β, indicating that the system dissipates the wave energy by collisions, and a stable CDA wave envelope packet in the form of a hole will be a dominant localized pulse. For a collisionless plasma, i.e., α=0, the CGL equation reduces to the standard nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. The latter is used to investigate the modulational (in)stability region for the CDA waves in a collisionless magnetoplasma. It is shown that, within unstable regions, a random set of nonlinearly interacting CDA perturbations leads to the formation of CDA rogue waves. In order to demonstrate that the characteristics of the CDA rogue waves are influenced by the plasma β, the relevant numerical analysis of the appropriate nonlinear solution of the NLS equation is presented. The application of our investigation to space and laboratory magnetoplasmas is discussed.

Abstract
We investigate stimulated scattering instabilities of coherent circularly polarized electromagnetic (CPEM) waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) in dense quantum plasmas with degenerate electrons and nondegenerate ions. For this purpose, we employ the coupled equations for the CPEM wave vector potential and the driven (by the ponderomotive force of the CPEM waves) equations for the electron and ion plasma oscillations. The electrons are significantly affected by the quantum forces (viz., the quantum statistical pressure, the quantum Bohm potential, as well as the electron exchange and electron correlations due to electron spin), which are included in the framework of the quantum hydrodynamical description of the electrons. Furthermore, our investigation of the stimulated Brillouin instability of coherent CPEM waves uses the generalized ion momentum equation that includes strong ion coupling effects. The nonlinear equations for the coupled CPEM and quantum plasma waves are then analyzed to obtain nonlinear dispersion relations which exhibit stimulated Raman, stimulated Brillouin, and modulational instabilities of CPEM waves carrying OAM. The present results are useful for understanding the origin of scattered light off low-frequency density fluctuations in high-energy density plasmas where quantum effects are eminent.

We present a nonlinear theory for relativistic x-ray free-electron lasers in the quantum regime, using a collective Klein-Gordon (KG) equation (for relativistic electrons), which is coupled with the Maxwell-Poisson equations for the electromagnetic and electrostatic fields. In our model, an intense electromagnetic wave is used as a wiggler which interacts with a relativistic electron beam to produce coherent tunable radiation. The KG-Maxwell-Poisson model is used to derive a general nonlinear dispersion relation for parametric instabilities in three space dimensions, including an arbitrarily large amplitude electromagnetic wiggler field. The nonlinear dispersion relation reveals the importance of quantum recoil effects and oblique scattering of the radiation that can be tuned by varying the beam energy.

Abstract
A multistream model for spinless electrons in a relativistic quantum plasma is introduced by means of a suitable fluidlike version of the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell system. The one- and two-stream cases are treated in detail. A new linear instability condition for two-stream quantum plasmas is obtained, generalizing the previously known nonrelativistic results. In both the one- and two-stream cases, steady-state solutions reduce the model to a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which can be numerically solved, yielding a manifold of nonlinear periodic and soliton structures. The validity conditions for the applicability of the model are addressed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to prepare natamycin encapsulated lecithin/chitosan mucoadhesive nanoparticles (NPs) for prolonged ocular application. These NPs were characterized by their mean particle size 213nm, encapsulation efficiency 73.57%, with a theoretical drug loading 5.09% and zeta potential +43. In vitro release exhibited a biphasic drug release profile with initial burst followed by a very slow drug release. The MIC(90) and zone of inhibition of NPs showed similar antifungal activity as compared to marketed suspension and free natamycin against Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigates. The ocular pharmacokinetics of NPs and marketed formulation were evaluated in NZ rabbits. The NPs exhibit significant mucin adhesion. The AUC((0-∞)) was increased up to 1.47 fold and clearance was decreased up to 7.4-fold as compared to marketed suspension. The PK-PD and pharmacokinetic simulation was carried out to estimate optimum dosing regimen for good efficacy. Thus, lecithin/chitosan NPs could be considered useful approach aiming to prolong ocular residence and reduce dosing frequency.

Abstract
We report a new attractive force between ions that are shielded by degenerate electrons in quantum plasmas. Specifically, we show that the electric potential around an isolated ion has a hard core negative part that resembles the Lennard-Jones-type potential. Physically, the new electric potential is attributed to the consideration of the quantum statistical pressure and the quantum Bohm potential, as well as the electron exchange and electron correlations due to electron-1/2 spin within the framework of the quantum hydrodynamical description of quantum plasmas. The shape of the attractive potential is determined by the ratio between the Bohr radius and the Wigner-Seitz radius of degenerate electrons. The existence of the hard core negative potential will be responsible for the attraction of ions forming lattices and atoms or molecules, as well as for critical points and phase transitions in quantum plasmas at nanoscales.

Abstract
The model of Cairns et al. [Geophys. Res. Lett. 22, 2709 (1995)] is generalized. A physically meaningful nonextensive nonthermal velocity distribution is outlined. As the nonextensive character of the nonthermal electrons increases, the distribution shoulders may become less or more prominent and high-energy states are less or more probable than in the extensive nonthermal case. It is found that our plasma model supports the coexistence of smooth rarefactive and spiky compressive ion-acoustic solitary waves. The rarefactive solitons are more affected by nonextensivity than their compressive counterpart and a slight increase in the nonextensive parameter may destroy this dual nature.

Abstract
We study the nonlinear propagation of electrostatic wave packets in a collisional plasma composed of strongly coupled ions and relativistically degenerate electrons. The equilibrium of ions is maintained by an effective temperature associated with their strong coupling, whereas that of electrons is provided by the relativistic degeneracy pressure. Using a multiple-scale technique, a (3 + 1)-dimensional coupled set of nonlinear Schrödinger-like equations with nonlocal nonlinearity is derived from a generalized viscoelastic hydrodynamic model. These coupled equations, which govern the dynamics of wave packets, are used to study the oblique modulational instability of a Stoke's wave train to a small plane-wave perturbation. We show that the wave packets, though stable to the parallel modulation, become unstable against oblique modulations. In contrast to the long-wavelength carrier modes, the wave packets with short wavelengths are shown to be stable in the weakly relativistic case, whereas they can be stable or unstable in the ultrarelativistic limit. Numerical simulation of the coupled equations reveals that a steady-state solution of the wave amplitude exists together with the formation of a localized structure in (2 + 1) dimensions. However, in the (3 + 1)-dimensional evolution, a Gaussian wave beam self-focuses after interaction and blows up in a finite time. The latter is, however, arrested when the dispersion predominates over the nonlinearities. This occurs when the Coulomb coupling strength is higher or a choice of obliqueness of modulation, or a wavelength of excitation is different. Possible application of our results to the interior as well as in an outer mantle of white dwarfs are discussed.

Abstract
The etiology of depression is still poorly understood, but two major causative hypotheses have been put forth: the monoamine deficiency and the stress hypotheses of depression. We evaluate these hypotheses using animal models of endogenous depression and chronic stress. The endogenously depressed rat and its control strain were developed by bidirectional selective breeding from the Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat, an accepted model of major depressive disorder (MDD). The WKY More Immobile (WMI) substrain shows high immobility/despair-like behavior in the forced swim test (FST), while the control substrain, WKY Less Immobile (WLI), shows no depressive behavior in the FST. Chronic stress responses were investigated by using Brown Norway, Fischer 344, Lewis and WKY, genetically and behaviorally distinct strains of rats. Animals were either not stressed (NS) or exposed to chronic restraint stress (CRS). Genome-wide microarray analyses identified differentially expressed genes in hippocampi and amygdalae of the endogenous depression and the chronic stress models. No significant difference was observed in the expression of monoaminergic transmission-related genes in either model. Furthermore, very few genes showed overlapping changes in the WMI vs WLI and CRS vs NS comparisons, strongly suggesting divergence between endogenous depressive behavior- and chronic stress-related molecular mechanisms. Taken together, these results posit that although chronic stress may induce depressive behavior, its molecular underpinnings differ from those of endogenous depression in animals and possibly in humans, suggesting the need for different treatments. The identification of novel endogenous depression-related and chronic stress response genes suggests that unexplored molecular mechanisms could be targeted for the development of novel therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Cognitive and memory deficits can be caused or exacerbated by dietary folate deficiency, which has been combatted by the addition of folate to grains and dietary supplements. The recommended dose of the B9 vitamin folate is 400 µg/day for adolescents and non-pregnant adults, and consumption above the recommended daily allowance is not considered to be detrimental. However, the effects of excess folate have not been tested in adolescence when neuro and endocrine development suggest possible vulnerability to long-term cognitive effects. We administered folate-supplemented (8.0 mg folic acid/kg diet) or control lab chow (2.7 mg folic acid/kg diet) to rats ad libitum from 30 to 60 days of age, and subsequently tested their motivation and learning and memory in the Morris water maze. We found that folate-supplemented animals had deficits in motivation and spatial memory, but they showed no changes of the learning- and memory-related molecules growth-associated protein-43 or Gs-α subunit protein in the hippocampus. They had decreased levels of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in the periphery and decreased protein levels of thyroid receptor-α1 and -α2 (TRα1 and TRα2) in the hippocampus. The latter may have been due to an observed increase of cytosine-phosphate-guanosine island methylation within the putative thyroid hormone receptor-α promoter, which we have mapped for the first time in the rat. Overall, folate supplementation in adolescence led to motivational and spatial memory deficits that may have been mediated by suppressed thyroid hormone function in the periphery and hippocampus.
