Room-level ventilation in schools and universities

Ventilation is of primary concern for maintaining healthy indoor air quality and reducing the spread of airborne infectious disease, including COVID-19. In addition to building-level guidelines, increased attention is being placed on room-level ventilation. However, for many universities and schools, ventilation data on a room-by-room basis are not available for classrooms and other key spaces. We present an overview of approaches for measuring ventilation along with their advantages and disadvantages. We also present data from recent case studies for a variety of institutions across the United States, with various building ages, types, locations, and climates, highlighting their commonalities and differences, and examples of the use of this data to support decision making.

Overview of HOMEChem: House Observations of Microbial and Environmental Chemistry

The House Observations of Microbial and Environmental Chemistry (HOMEChem) study is a collaborative field investigation designed to probe how everyday activities influence the emissions, chemical transformations and removal of trace gases and particles in indoor air. Sequential and layered experiments in a research house included cooking, cleaning, variable occupancy, and window-opening. This paper describes the overall design of HOMEChem and presents preliminary case studies investigating the concentrations of reactive trace gases, aerosol particles, and surface films. Cooking was a large source of VOCs, CO2, NOx, and particles. By number, cooking particles were predominantly in the ultrafine mode. Organic aerosol dominated the submicron mass, and, while variable between meals and throughout the cooking process, was dominated by components of hydrocarbon character and low oxygen content, similar to cooking oil. Air exchange in the house ensured that cooking particles were present for only short periods. During unoccupied background intervals, particle concentrations were lower indoors than outdoors. The cooling coils of the house ventilation system induced cyclic changes in water soluble gases. Even during unoccupied periods, concentrations of many organic trace gases were higher indoors than outdoors, consistent with housing materials being potential sources of these compounds to the outdoor environment. Organic material accumulated on indoor surfaces, and exhibited chemical signatures similar to indoor organic aerosol.

Can commonly-used fan-driven air cleaning technologies improve indoor air quality? A literature review

Air cleaning techniques have been applied worldwide with the goal of improving indoor air quality. The effectiveness of applying these techniques varies widely, and pollutant removal efficiency is usually determined in controlled laboratory environments which may not be realized in practice. Some air cleaners are largely ineffective, and some produce harmful by-products. To summarize what is known regarding the effectiveness of fan-driven air cleaning technologies, a state-of-the-art review of the scientific literature was undertaken by a multidisciplinary panel of experts from Europe, North America, and Asia with expertise in air cleaning, aerosol science, medicine, chemistry and ventilation. The effects on health were not examined. Over 26,000 articles were identified in major literature databases; 400 were selected as being relevant based on their titles and abstracts by the first two authors, who further reduced the number of articles to 160 based on the full texts. These articles were reviewed by the panel using predefined inclusion criteria during their first meeting. Additions were also made by the panel. Of these, 133 articles were finally selected for detailed review. Each article was assessed independently by two members of the panel and then judged by the entire panel during a consensus meeting. During this process 59 articles were deemed conclusive and their results were used for final reporting at their second meeting. The conclusions are that: (1) None of the reviewed technologies was able to effectively remove all indoor pollutants and many were found to generate undesirable by-products during operation. (2) Particle filtration and sorption of gaseous pollutants were among the most effective air cleaning technologies, but there is insufficient information regarding long-term performance and proper maintenance. (3) The existing data make it difficult to extract information such as Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), which represents a common benchmark for comparing the performance of different air cleaning technologies. (4) To compare and select suitable indoor air cleaning devices, a labeling system accounting for characteristics such as CADR, energy consumption, volume, harmful by-products, and life span is necessary. For that purpose, a standard test room and condition should be built and studied. (5) Although there is evidence that some air cleaning technologies improve indoor air quality, further research is needed before any of them can be confidently recommended for use in indoor environments.

Characterization of natural ventilation in wastewater collection systems

The purpose of the study was to characterize natural ventilation in full-scale gravity collection system components while measuring other parameters related to ventilation. Experiments were completed at four different locations in the wastewater collection systems of Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, Los Angeles, California, and the King County Wastewater Treatment District, Seattle, Washington. The subject components were concrete gravity pipes ranging in diameter from 0.8 to 2.4 m (33 to 96 in.). Air velocity was measured in each pipe using a carbon-monoxide pulse tracer method. Air velocity was measured entering or exiting the components at vents using a standpipe and hotwire anemometer arrangement. Ambient wind speed, temperature, and relative humidity; headspace temperature and relative humidity; and wastewater flow and temperature were measured. The field experiments resulted in a large database of measured ventilation and related parameters characterizing ventilation in full-scale gravity sewers. Measured ventilation rates ranged from 23 to 840 L/s. The experimental data was used to evaluate existing ventilation models. Three models that were based upon empirical extrapolation, computational fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics, respectively, were evaluated based on predictive accuracy compared to the measured data. Strengths and weaknesses in each model were found and these observations were used to propose a concept for an improved ventilation model.

[Duodenal ulcer and Helicobacter pylori]

BACKGROUND

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between duodenal ulcer (DU), Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection and genetic and enviromental factors, and its influence on treatment and long-term RESULTS.

METHOD

In the course of an epidemiological study on the prevalence of esophagogastroduodenal diseases, 1,169 volunteers underwent an endoscopy of the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. The relationship of incidence rate and size of duodenal ulcers and several risks factors was investigated.

RESULTS

A DU was observed in 240 subjects (20.5%), mostly of male gender (64.4% - p<0.0001). The Histological presence of a gastric Hp infection was confirmed in 179 cases (74.6%); it did not influenced the mean size of the ulcers and the presence of gastric intestinal metaplasia, compared to subjects without Hp infection. However, a superficial chronic gastritis was observed in 95.9% of Hp+ subjects and in 83.3% of Hp- (p<0.003), whereas a familiar history of DU was noted in 33.3% of Hp+ subjects and in 50.8% of Hp- (p<0.02). The main risk factor for DU was represented by Hp infection in 119 cases (49.6%), by infective and genetic factors in 60 cases (25%) and only by the genetic factor in 31 cases (12.9%), and was not detected in 30 cases (12.5%). Ulcer recurrence rates, after medical therapy, were 0,5% and 6.5% (p<0.03) at a 2-month follow-up, and 2.2% and 49.1% (p<0.00001) at a 12-month follow-up, among Hp+ and Hp- patients, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The most common risk factor for DU was a gastric Hp infection, alone or associated to the genetic factor. Since the high incidence of recurrences at a 12-month follow-up, patients affected with a DU but Hp- represented an important therapeutic concern.

Structure-activity relationships of the delta-opioid-selective agonists, deltorphins

Deltorphins are naturally occurring peptides with high affinity and selectivity for delta-opioid receptors. They share with dermorphin, another mu-selective opioid agonist, the same N-terminal tripeptide Tyr-D-Xaa-Phe, where D-Xaa is a D-Ala or a D-Met residue. This common sequence appears to be essential for the best fitting of the peptides to both mu- or delta-opioid sites. We studied the changes in receptor affinity and selectivity and in biological potency of deltorphins due to shortening of the sequence, C-terminal deamidation or single amino acid substitutions. The results support the view that a code addressing the molecule towards delta-opioid sites is expressed in the C-terminal region of these peptides. This addressing domain confers high delta-selectivity to the ligand in the following two ways: (i) increased affinity for delta-sites; (ii) decreased affinity for mu-sites. The sequence of the C-terminal tripeptide appears to be responsible for the high delta-affinity of the molecules. Negatively charged side chains inhibit mu-binding and enhance delta-selectivity.

cDNAs encoding [D-Ala2]deltorphin precursors from skin of Phyllomedusa bicolor also contain genetic information for three dermorphin-related opioid peptides

We present the structure of four precursors for [D-Ala2]deltorphins I and II as deduced from cDNAs cloned from skin of the frog Phyllomedusa bicolor. These contain the genetic information for one copy of [D-Ala2]deltorphin II and zero, one, or three copies of [D-Ala2]deltorphin I. In each case, the D-alanine of the end product is encoded by a normal GCG codon for L-alanine. In addition, the existence of three peptides related to dermorphin was predicted from the amino acid sequence of the precursors. These peptides were synthesized with a D-alanine in position 2 and their pharmacological properties were tested. Two of them, [Lys7]dermorphin-OH and [Trp4,Asn7]dermorphin-OH, were found to have roughly the same affinity and selectivity for mu-type opioid receptors as dermorphin.

Reversal of ethinylestradiol-induced cholestasis by epomediol in rat. The role of liver plasma-membrane fluidity

Epomediol (EPO) is a synthetic terpenoid compound shown to be active in increasing bile flow and some enzymatic activities of liver plasma membranes in the rat. The possible effect of EPO treatment in the ethinyl-estradiol (EE) induced cholestasis in the rat was investigated by measuring the hepatic transport of sulfobromophthalein (BSP) (plasma clearance and biliary secretion) and bile flow. Liver plasma membrane fluidity was also determined by the steady state fluorescence polarization (P) of diphenylhexatriene (DPH). EE administration (5 mg/kg s.c. for 5 days) was followed by a significant, comparable reduction (P less than 0.001) in BSP plasma clearance and biliary excretion and in bile flow. Intraperitoneal administration of EPO (100 mg/kg) to EE-treated rats restored both parameters of BSP transport, as well as bile flow, to control values. Liver plasma membrane fluidity was markedly (P less than 0.01) decreased by EE administration with a concomitant reduction (P less than 0.01) in Na+/K+-ATPase activity. EPO administration significantly increased membrane fluidity to values higher either to cholestatic (P less than 0.05) or control (P less than 0.05) animals. On the contrary, EPO did not influence Na+/K+-ATPase activity in either EE-treated or control animals. These data indicate that EPO fully reverses the impairments of BSP transport and bile flow induced by EE, possibly by reversing the decrease in liver plasma membrane fluidity induced by the synthetic estrogen. On the contrary, the EE-mediated decrease in Na+/K+-ATPase activity was not reversed by EPO.

Deltorphins: a family of naturally occurring peptides with high affinity and selectivity for delta opioid binding sites

Deltorphins are endogenous linear heptapeptides, isolated from skin extracts of frogs belonging to the genus Phyllomedusa, that have a higher affinity and selectivity for delta opioid binding sites than any other natural compound known. Two deltorphins with the sequence Tyr-Ala-Phe-Asp(or Glu)-Val-Val-Gly-NH2 have been isolated from skin extracts of Phyllomedusa bicolor. The alanine in position 2 is in the D configuration. These peptides, [D-Ala2]deltorphins I and II, show an even higher affinity for delta receptors than the previously characterized deltorphin, which contains D-methionine as the second amino acid. These peptides show some similarity to another constituent of Phyllomedusa skin, dermorphin, which is highly selective for mu-opioid receptors. These peptides all have the N-terminal sequence Tyr-D-Xaa-Phe, where D-Xaa is either D-alanine or D-methionine. While this structure seems to be capable of activating both mu and delta opioid receptors, differences in the C-terminal regions of these peptides are probably responsible for the observed high receptor selectivity of dermorphin and deltorphin.

Deltorphin, a novel amphibian skin peptide with high selectivity and affinity for delta opioid receptors

With a cDNA library prepared from skin of Phyllomedusa sauvagei, the sequence of the precursor of dermorphin was elucidated recently. The sequence suggested the existence of another peptide, distantly related to dermorphin. Two variants of this peptide have now been synthesized containing either L- or D-methionine as the second amino acid. The peptide containing the D-methionine exhibited high-affinity and selectivity for delta opioid receptors in the mouse vas deferens and in rat brain homogenates. Moreover, using the synthetic peptide as marker, we could isolate small quantities of the corresponding natural peptide containing D-methionine as the second amino acid from skin extracts of Phyllomedusa sauvagei. The name deltorphin is proposed for this new peptide and its sequence is Tyr-D-Met-Phe-His-Leu-Met-Asp-NH2.
