Tests of Light-Lepton Universality in Angular Asymmetries of B^{0}→D^{*-}ℓν Decays

We present the first comprehensive tests of the universality of the light leptons in the angular distributions of semileptonic B^{0}-meson decays to charged spin-1 charmed mesons. We measure five angular-asymmetry observables as functions of the decay recoil that are sensitive to lepton-universality-violating contributions. We use events where one neutral B is fully reconstructed in ϒ(4S)→BB[over ¯] decays in data corresponding to 189  fb^{-1} integrated luminosity from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. We find no significant deviation from the standard model expectations.

Precise Measurement of the D_{s}^{+} Lifetime at Belle II

We measure the lifetime of the D_{s}^{+} meson using a data sample of 207  fb^{-1} collected by the Belle II experiment running at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. The lifetime is determined by fitting the decay-time distribution of a sample of 116×10^{3} D_{s}^{+}→ϕπ^{+} decays. Our result is τ_{D_{s}^{+}}=(499.5±1.7±0.9)  fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This result is significantly more precise than previous measurements.

Search for a τ^{+}τ^{-} Resonance in e^{+}e^{-}→μ^{+}μ^{-}τ^{+}τ^{-} Events with the Belle II Experiment

We report the first search for a nonstandard-model resonance decaying into τ pairs in e^{+}e^{-}→μ^{+}μ^{-}τ^{+}τ^{-} events in the 3.6-10  GeV/c^{2} mass range. We use a 62.8  fb^{-1} sample of e^{+}e^{-} collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. The analysis probes three different models predicting a spin-1 particle coupling only to the heavier lepton families, a Higgs-like spin-0 particle that couples preferentially to charged leptons (leptophilic scalar), and an axionlike particle, respectively. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at 90% confidence level on the product of cross section and branching fraction into τ pairs, ranging from 0.7 to 24 fb, and on the couplings of these processes. We obtain world-leading constraints on the couplings for the leptophilic scalar model for masses above 6.5  GeV/c^{2} and for the axionlike particle model over the entire mass range.

Measurement of CP Violation in B^{0}→K_{S}^{0}π^{0} Decays at Belle II

We report a measurement of the CP-violating parameters C and S in B^{0}→K_{S}^{0}π^{0} decays at Belle II using a sample of 387×10^{6}  BB[over ¯] events recorded in e^{+}e^{-} collisions at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the ϒ(4S) resonance. These parameters are determined by fitting the proper decay-time distribution of a sample of 415 signal events. We obtain C=-0.04_{-0.15}^{+0.14}±0.05 and S=0.75_{-0.23}^{+0.20}±0.04, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Test of Light-Lepton Universality in the Rates of Inclusive Semileptonic B-Meson Decays at Belle II

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B-meson decays, R(X_{e/μ})=B(B→Xeν)/B(B→Xμν), a precision test of electron-muon universality, using data corresponding to 189  fb^{-1} from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. In events where the partner B meson is fully reconstructed, we use fits to the lepton momentum spectra above 1.3  GeV/c to obtain R(X_{e/μ})=1.007±0.009(stat)±0.019(syst), which is the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind and agrees with the standard-model expectation.

Search for an Invisible Z^{'} in a Final State with Two Muons and Missing Energy at Belle II

The L_{μ}-L_{τ} extension of the standard model predicts the existence of a lepton-flavor-universality-violating Z^{'} boson that couples only to the heavier lepton families. We search for such a Z^{'} through its invisible decay in the process e^{+}e^{-}→μ^{+}μ^{-}Z^{'}. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019-2020, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 79.7  fb^{-1}. We find no excess over the expected standard-model background. We set 90%-confidence-level upper limits on the cross section for this process as well as on the coupling of the model, which ranges from 3×10^{-3} at low Z^{'} masses to 1 at Z^{'} masses of 8  GeV/c^{2}.

Search for Lepton-Flavor-Violating τ Decays to a Lepton and an Invisible Boson at Belle II

We search for lepton-flavor-violating τ^{-}→e^{-}α and τ^{-}→μ^{-}α decays, where α is an invisible spin-0 boson. The search uses electron-positron collisions at 10.58 GeV center-of-mass energy with an integrated luminosity of 62.8  fb^{-1}, produced by the SuperKEKB collider and collected with the Belle II detector. We search for an excess in the lepton-energy spectrum of the known τ^{-}→e^{-}ν[over ¯]_{e}ν_{τ} and τ^{-}→μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}ν_{τ} decays. We report 95% confidence-level upper limits on the branching-fraction ratio B(τ^{-}→e^{-}α)/B(τ^{-}→e^{-}ν[over ¯]_{e}ν_{τ}) in the range (1.1-9.7)×10^{-3} and on B(τ^{-}→μ^{-}α)/B(τ^{-}→μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}ν_{τ}) in the range (0.7-12.2)×10^{-3} for α masses between 0 and 1.6  GeV/c^{2}. These results provide the most stringent bounds on invisible boson production from τ decays.

Observation of e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{bJ}(1P) and Search for X_{b}→ωϒ(1S) at sqrt[s] near 10.75 GeV

We study the processes e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{bJ}(1P) (J=0, 1, or 2) using samples at center-of-mass energies sqrt[s]=10.701, 10.745, and 10.805 GeV, corresponding to 1.6, 9.8, and 4.7  fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, respectively. These data were collected with the Belle II detector during special operations of the SuperKEKB collider above the ϒ(4S) resonance. We report the first observation of ωχ_{bJ}(1P) signals at sqrt[s]=10.745  GeV. By combining Belle II data with Belle results at sqrt[s]=10.867  GeV, we find energy dependencies of the Born cross sections for e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{b1,b2}(1P) to be consistent with the shape of the ϒ(10753) state. These data indicate that the internal structures of the ϒ(10753) and ϒ(10860) states may differ. Including data at sqrt[s]=10.653  GeV, we also search for the bottomonium equivalent of the X(3872) state decaying into ωϒ(1S). No significant signal is observed for masses between 10.45 and 10.65  GeV/c^{2}.

Abstract P5-01-09: Evaluation of the efficacy of using fluorescence-associated indocyanine green in sentinel lymph node biopsies from breast cancer patients

Introduction: Sentinel lymph node biopsy is the technique of choice for axillary staging in patients with breast cancer. Although it is already a widespread technique, its history is relatively recent. Three techniques are globally used to detect sentinel lymph nodes: the patent blue, described by Giuliano et al. (1994); the technetium-99 radiopharmaceutical with gamma probe, published by Krag et al. (1993); and the combination of these two techniques. Objective: This study aims to evaluate sentinel lymph node detection rate using the innovative fluorescence-associated indocyanine green technique in breast cancer patients, and to compare it with that of patent blue and with a combination of the two dyes. Method: A randomized trial was conducted on 99 patients who were equally divided into three arms, each one undergoing sentinel lymph node detection using either patent blue, indocyanine green, or a combination of the two dyes. The study was conducted at Hospital de Esperança, Presidente Prudente, SP, Brazil, in partnership with the Breast Department of Paulista School of Medicine, Federal University of São Paulo. Results: The accuracy rate in identifying sentinel lymph nodes was 78.8% with patent blue, 93.9% with indocyanine green, and 100% with patent blue + indocyanine green. Two sentinel nodes (48.5%) were mostly identified in the combined group; however, only one sentinel node was identified in the other groups. The mean time for sentinel lymph node identification was 20.6 minutes with the traditional dye, 8.6 minutes with indocyanine green, and 10 minutes with the combination of the two methods (p < 0.001). The mean surgical time was 69.4 minutes with patent blue, 55.1 minutes with indocyanine green, and 69.4 minutes with their combination (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Sentinel lymph node detection rate by fluorescence-associated indocyanine green was considered effective. The comparison of sentinel lymph node detection rates between patent blue, indocyanine green, and a combination of patent blue + indocyanine green revealed statistically significant differences (p = 0.030), with the combined method being the most effective. Benefits of dual-release hydrocortisone treatment on central adiposity and health-related quality of life in secondary adrenal insufficiency

PURPOSE

Patients with secondary adrenal insufficiency (SAI) have an increased morbidity and an impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL), which seems to primarily depend on the sub-optimal replacement of hypoadrenalism with standard glucocorticoid (GC) therapy, and on the inadequate correction of other associated pituitary deficiencies. A dual-release hydrocortisone (DR-HC) formulation has shown to exert positive effects on morbidity and HRQoL, mainly in patients with primary adrenal insufficiency. We assessed the variations of anthropometric and metabolic parameters and HRQoL in patients with SAI after switching from cortisone acetate (CA) or hydrocortisone (HC) to DR-HC.

METHODS

Twenty-one patients (17 M, 4 F) treated with CA (n = 16; 25 mg/day twice a day) or HC (n = 5; 20 mg/day three times a day), were evaluated for waist circumference, BMI, fasting glucose, HbA1c, insulin, HOMA-IR index, serum lipids, electrolytes, blood pressure and HRQoL at baseline, at 3, 6 and 12 months after switching from CA/HC to DR-HC.

RESULTS

The study showed a significant reduction of waist circumference and BMI (p = 0.04, for both), after 3 and 6months of DR-HC treatment, respectively. No significant changes were observed for fasting glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR index, HbA1c, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, electrolytes, and blood pressure. However, HDL cholesterol significantly decreased (p = 0.003). An improvement of AddiQoL total score was observed during DR-HC treatment (p = 0.01), mainly for the category "emotions". No predictors resulted for these changes.

CONCLUSION

DR-HC treatment provides some benefits in patients with SAI, reducing central adiposity and improving HRQoL; however, worsening of HDL cholesterol is observed during treatment with DR-HC.

Measurement of the Λ_{c}^{+} Lifetime

An absolute measurement of the Λ_{c}^{+} lifetime is reported using Λ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+} decays in events reconstructed from data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The total integrated luminosity of the data sample, which was collected at center-of-mass energies at or near the ϒ(4S) resonance, is 207.2  fb^{-1}. The result, τ(Λ_{c}^{+})=203.20±0.89±0.77  fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, is the most precise measurement to date and is consistent with previous determinations.

Search for a Dark Photon and an Invisible Dark Higgs Boson in μ^{+}μ^{-} and Missing Energy Final States with the Belle II Experiment

The dark photon A^{'} and the dark Higgs boson h^{'} are hypothetical particles predicted in many dark sector models. We search for the simultaneous production of A^{'} and h^{'} in the dark Higgsstrahlung process e^{+}e^{-}→A^{'}h^{'} with A^{'}→μ^{+}μ^{-} and h^{'} invisible in electron-positron collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV in data collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019. With an integrated luminosity of 8.34  fb^{-1}, we observe no evidence for signal. We obtain exclusion limits at 90% Bayesian credibility in the range of 1.7-5.0 fb on the cross section and in the range of 1.7×10^{-8}-200×10^{-8} on the effective coupling ϵ^{2}×α_{D} for the A^{'} mass in the range of 4.0  GeV/c^{2}<M_{A^{'}}<9.7  GeV/c^{2} and for the h^{'} mass M_{h^{'}}<M_{A^{'}}, where ϵ is the mixing strength between the standard model and the dark photon and α_{D} is the coupling of the dark photon to the dark Higgs boson. Our limits are the first in this mass range.

Idiopathic central diabetes insipidus in a large cohort of patients: the hypopituitarism ENEA rare observational (HEROS) study

Central Diabetes Insipidus (CDI) is mainly associated with structural pathologies of the hypothalamic-pituitary area. Etiologies underlying CDI are identified in most patients, however idiopathic CDI is reported in 13-17% of cases after excluding other etiologies. The Hypopituitarism ENEA Rare Observational Study (HEROS study) retrospectively collected data of patients with idiopathic CDI from 14 pituitary centers in 9 countries. The cohort included 92 patients (59 females 64%), mean age at diagnosis was 35.4 ± 20.7 years, and a mean follow up of 19.1 ± 13.5 years following CDI diagnosis. In 6 women, diagnosis was related to pregnancy. Of 83 patients with available data on pituitary imaging, 40(48%) had normal sellar imaging, and 43(52%) had pathology of the posterior pituitary or the stalk, including loss of the bright spot, posterior pituitary atrophy or stalk enlargement. Anterior pituitary hormone deficiencies at presentation included hypogonadism in 6 (6.5%) patients (5 females), and hypocortisolism in one; during follow-up new anterior pituitary deficiencies developed in 6 patients. Replacement treatment with desmopressin was given to all patients except one, usually with an oral preparation. During follow up, no underlying disease causing CDI was identified in any patient. Patients with idiopathic CDI following investigation at baseline are stable with no specific etiology depicted during long-term follow-up.

First report of Diaporthe eres causing stem blight and dieback on highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) in Italy

Vaccinium corymbosum L. is a woody deciduous shrub belonging to the Ericaceae family. During the last decade, Northern Italy has become a major area for blueberry cultivation and production in Europe, supplying other countries with high quality fruit (FAOSTAT 2020). In June 2020, plant stem and branch wilting with brownish necrotic internal lesions were observed on 20% of around 250 plants of the cultivar (cv.) Draper cultivated in a soilless culture system located in Peveragno (Piedmont, Cuneo Province, 44°21'05.6''N, 07°37'23.2''). Dieback and death of the plants also occurred. Fifteen symptomatic plants were collected. Wood pieces (5-10 mm) excised from diseased stems and branches were sterilized in 1% sodium hypochlorite for 1 min, rinsed in sterile distilled water and dried on sterile absorbent paper. Small fragments (2-3 mm), obtained from the edge of the necrotic tissues, were plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) amended with 25 mg/L of streptomycin sulfate. Plates were incubated at 25 ± 1°C under a 12 h photoperiod and, five days after, colonies with the same characteristics of Diaporthe spp. were established from single hyphal tip transfers. Two representative strains (CVG1130 and CVG1131) were grown on PDA from single hyphal-tip transfers. After 7 days, white colonies with fluffy, aerial, mycelium reaching 8.3 cm were observed. colonies turned gray after three weeks producing dark brown pycnidia. Aseptate, hyaline, fusiform to ellipsoidal, measuring 6.3 to 8.4 × 2.2 to 3.0 μm alpha conidia were produced. No beta conidia were observed. The DNA of the same strains was extracted and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed for the ITS (primer set: ITS1-ITS4) (GenBank Accession no. ON834528; ON834529), tef (EF1-728/EF1-986) (GenBank Accession no. ON843715; ON843716) and tub2 (T1/Bt2b) (GenBank Accession no. ON843713; ON843714) regions, in accordance with previous studies (Gomes et al. 2013, Bezerra et al. 2021). Sequences analysed with BLASTn algorithm (Altschul et al. 1997) exhibited 98% identity with the ex-type strain CBS 138594 of Diaporthe eres for ITS (GenBank Accession no. KJ210529), 100% identity for tub2 (GenBank Accession no. KJ420799) and 99% identity for tef (GenBank Accession no. KJ210550). The maximum likelihood method based on combined sequences of ITS, tef and tub2 loci was performed, and the isolates CVG1130 and CVG1131 clustered with several reference strains of D. eres (Supplementary figure). To fulfil Koch's postulates, pathogenicity tests were performed on 1-year-old blueberry potted plants cv. Draper and Duke. A small piece of the bark tissue was removed with a sterile-bladed scalpel to expose the cambium. Mycelium plugs (5 mm diameter), obtained from 10-day-old cultures of the strains CVG1130 and CVG1131, were placed with the mycelium in contact with the internal plant tissues. Three plants were used for each isolate and the inoculation points were sealed with Parafilm®. The same number of plants treated with sterile PDA plugs were used as control. Plants were placed in a growth chamber at 25°C for 3 weeks. After this period, symptoms similar to those observed in the field appeared on the inoculated plants, while control plants remained healthy. A fungus with the same morphological characteristics of D. eres was reisolated from inoculated plants and identified by sequencing the tub2 gene to confirm Koch's postulates. Diaporthe eres was previously reported on different Vaccinium spp. in Chile, Lithuania, the Netherlands and the U.S.A. (Farr and Rossman, 2022). To our knowledge, this is the first report of D. eres associated with stem blight and dieback of highbush blueberry in Italy. Duke and Draper are among the most cultivated blueberry cultivars in Piedmont, where the spread of D. eres could represent a serious threat.

New-Onset Anemia and Associated Risk of ESKD and Death in Non-Dialysis CKD Patients: A Multi-Cohort Observational Study

Background

Anemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD), but its incidence in nephrology settings is poorly investigated. Similarly, the risks of adverse outcomes associated with new-onset anemia are not known.

Methods

We performed a pooled analysis of three observational cohort studies including 1031 non-anemic CKD patients with eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m² regularly followed in renal clinics. We estimated the incidence of mild anemia (hemoglobin 11–12 g/dL in women and 11–13 g/dL in men) and severe anemia (hemoglobin <11 g/dL or use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents) during a 3-year follow-up period. Thereafter we estimated the risk of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and all-cause death associated with new-onset mild and severe anemia.

Results

The mean age was 63 ± 14 years, 60% were men and 20% had diabetes. The mean estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 37 ± 13 mL/min/1.73 m² and the median proteinuria was 0.4 g/day [interquartile range (IQR) 0.1–1.1]. The incidence of mild and severe anemia was 13.7/100 patients-year and 6.2/100 patients-year, respectively. Basal predictors of either mild or severe anemia were diabetes, lower hemoglobin, higher serum phosphate, eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m² and proteinuria >0.50 g/day. Male sex, moderate CKD (eGFR 30–44 mL/min/1.73 m²) and moderate proteinuria (0.15–0.50 g/day) predicted only mild anemia. The incidence of anemia increased progressively with CKD stages (from 8.77 to 76.59/100 patients-year) and the proteinuria category (from 13.99 to 25.02/100 patients-year). During a median follow-up of 3.1 years, 232 patients reached ESKD and 135 died. Compared with non-anemic patients, mild anemia was associated with a higher adjusted risk of ESKD {hazard ratio [HR] 1.42 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02–1.98]} and all-cause death [HR 1.55 (95% CI 1.04–2.32)]. Severe anemia was associated with an even higher risk of ESKD [HR 1.73 (95% CI 1.20–2.51)] and death [HR 1.83 (95% CI 1.05–3.19)].

Conclusions

New-onset anemia is frequent, particularly in patients with more severe renal damage and in those with diabetes mellitus. The occurrence of anemia, even of a mild degree, is associated with mortality risk and faster progression towards ESKD.

Combining social network analysis and agent-based model for enabling nature-based solution implementation: The case of Medina del Campo (Spain)

Several barriers still hamper the effective implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). Among the others, this work focuses on collaboration barriers. NBS implementation claims for effective collaboration among different decision-agents. However, ambiguity in problem framings, which is ineradicable in multi-agents' decision environments, could create collaboration barriers. This work aims to demonstrate that collaboration barriers to NBS implementation can be overcome by enhancing the network of interactions among the decision-agents. An innovative method based on the integration between Social Network Analysis and hybrid Agent-Based Model/System Dynamic Model was adopted to this aim. The analysis results were used for designing networking interventions, i.e. efforts using social network characteristics that could enhance interactions mechanisms among decision-agents. The developed method was implemented in the Medina del Campo (Spain) case study. This area is characterised by one of the most critical groundwater bodies of the Duero River Basin. This work aims at supporting the implementation of suitable NBS to stop the degradation of the groundwater status and associated ecosystem services. The activities carried out within the framework of the NAIAD project showed that, by enhancing the interaction mechanisms, ambiguity in problem frames can still yield collective actions for NBS implementation.

Precise Measurement of the D^{0} and D^{+} Lifetimes at Belle II

We report a measurement of the D^{0} and D^{+} lifetimes using D^{0}→K^{-}π^{+} and D^{+}→K^{-}π^{+}π^{+} decays reconstructed in e^{+}e^{-}→cc[over ¯] data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. The data, collected at center-of-mass energies at or near the ϒ(4S) resonance, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 72  fb^{-1}. The results, τ(D^{0})=410.5±1.1(stat)±0.8(syst)  fs and τ(D^{+})=1030.4±4.7(stat)±3.1(syst)  fs, are the most precise to date and are consistent with previous determinations.

Search for B^{+}→K^{+}νν[over ¯] Decays Using an Inclusive Tagging Method at Belle II

A search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decay B^{+}→K^{+}νν[over ¯] is performed at the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 63  fb^{-1} collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance and a sample of 9  fb^{-1} collected at an energy 60 MeV below the resonance. Because the measurable decay signature involves only a single charged kaon, a novel measurement approach is used that exploits not only the properties of the B^{+}→K^{+}νν[over ¯] decay, but also the inclusive properties of the other B meson in the ϒ(4S)→BB[over ¯] event, to suppress the background from other B meson decays and light-quark pair production. This inclusive tagging approach offers a higher signal efficiency compared to previous searches. No significant signal is observed. An upper limit on the branching fraction of B^{+}→K^{+}νν[over ¯] of 4.1×10^{-5} is set at the 90% confidence level.

Reference ranges of late-night salivary cortisol and cortisone measured by LC-MS/MS and accuracy for the diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome

PURPOSE

International guidelines recommend salivary cortisol for the diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome. Despite mass spectrometry-based assays are considered the analytical gold-standard, there is still the need to define reference intervals and diagnostic accuracy of such methodology.

METHODS

100 healthy volunteers and 50 consecutive patients were enrolled to compare LC-MS/MS and electrochemiluminescence assay for the determination of late-night salivary cortisol and cortisone. Moreover, we aimed to determine reference intervals of salivary steroids in a population of healthy individuals and diagnostic accuracy in patients with suspected hypercortisolism and in a population including also healthy individuals.

RESULTS

Method comparison highlighted a positive bias (51.8%) of immunoassay over LC-MS/MS. Reference intervals of salivary cortisol (0.17-0.97 µg/L), cortisone (0.84-4.85 µg/L) and ratio (0.08-0.30) were obtained. The most accurate thresholds of salivary cortisol for the diagnosis of hypercortisolism were 1.15 µg/L in the population with suspected hypercortisolism (AUC 1) and 1.30 µg/L in the population including also healthy individuals (AUC 1). Cut-off values of salivary cortisone (7.23 µg/L; Se 92.9%, Sp 97.2%, AUC 0.960 and Se 92.9%, Sp 99.1%, AUC 0.985 in suspected hypercortisolism and in overall population, respectively) and cortisol-to-cortisone ratio (0.20; Se 85.7%, Sp 80.6%, AUC 0.820 and Se 85.7%, Sp 85.5%, AUC 0.855 in suspected hypercortisolism and in overall population, respectively) were accurate and similar in both populations.

CONCLUSION

LC-MS/MS is the most accurate analytical platform for measuring salivary steroids. Obtained reference intervals are coherent with previously published data and diagnostic accuracy for diagnosis of overt hypercortisolism proved highly satisfactory.

Building the fashion’s future: How turn textiles’ wastes into ecological building products

The textile system is one of the most influential production activities at a global level from an environmental point of view, both in relation to the processes that characterize the supply chain and in relation to pre and post-consumer waste. It produces million tons of global greenhouse gas emissions per year and it consumes millions of litres of water; it uses million tons of chemical products. Furthermore, millions of tons of special textile wastes are yearly landfilled in upstream process as well as in downstream process. Less of 1% of materials used to produce clothes becomes part of a closed-loop recycling and less of 2% are recycled in other industrial activities. Changing the textile industrial linear model in a circular one according to Systemic Design principles is advisable, starting from wastes and by-products. As proved in the working paper wastes, due to their properties, can assumed as inputs of new production systems. Particularly the scientific contribution deals with some research activities carried out within a project titled EDILTEX - Innovation for reusing in textile companies. The achievements are described, showing that construction and fashion are fields only apparently far from each other. They can - on the contrary - developing powerful synergies and products with interesting technological and physical performances.

Search for Axionlike Particles Produced in e^{+}e^{-} Collisions at Belle II

We present a search for the direct production of a light pseudoscalar a decaying into two photons with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We search for the process e^{+}e^{-}→γa, a→γγ in the mass range 0.2<m_{a}<9.7  GeV/c^{2} using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (445±3)  pb^{-1}. Light pseudoscalars interacting predominantly with standard model gauge bosons (so-called axionlike particles or ALPs) are frequently postulated in extensions of the standard model. We find no evidence for ALPs and set 95% confidence level upper limits on the coupling strength g_{aγγ} of ALPs to photons at the level of 10^{-3}  GeV^{-1}. The limits are the most restrictive to date for 0.2<m_{a}<1  GeV/c^{2}.

Towards the tailoring of glucocorticoid replacement in adrenal insufficiency: the Italian Society of Endocrinology Expert Opinion

CONTEXT

Glucocorticoid (GC) replacement therapy in patients with adrenal insufficiency (AI) is life saving. After over 50 years of conventional GC treatment, novel formulations are now entering routine clinical practice.

METHODS

Given the spectrum of medications currently available and new insights into the understanding of AI, the authors reviewed relevant medical literature with emphasis on original studies, prospective observational data and randomized controlled trials performed in the past 35 years. The Expert Opinion of a panel of selected endocrinologists was sought to answer specific clinical questions. The objective was to provide an evidence-supported guide, for the use of GC in various settings from university hospitals to outpatient clinics, that offers specific advice tailored to the individual patient.

RESULTS

The Panel reviewed available GC replacement therapies, comprising short-acting, intermediate and long-acting oral formulations, subcutaneous formulations and the novel modified-release hydrocortisone. Advantages and disadvantages of these formulations were reviewed.

CONCLUSIONS

In the Panel's opinion, achieving the optimal GC timing and dosing is needed to improve the outcome of AI. No-single formulation offers the best option for every patients. Recent data suggest that more emphasis should be given to the timing of intake. Tailoring of GS should be attempted in all patients-by experts-on a case-by-case basis. The Panel identified specific subgroups of AI patients that could be help by this process. Long-term studies are needed to confirm the short-term benefits associated with the modified-release GCs. The impact of GC tailoring has yet to be proven in terms of hospitalization rate, morbidity and mortality.

Enhancing nature-based solutions acceptance through stakeholders' engagement in co-benefits identification and trade-offs analysis

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are increasingly recognized as a valid alternative to grey infrastructures - i.e. hard, human-engineered structures - as measures for reducing climate-related risks. Increasing evidences demonstrated that NBS can reduce risks to people and property as effectively as traditional grey infrastructures, but potentially offering many additional benefits, e.g. improving the natural habitat for wildlife, enhancing water and air quality, improving socio-cultural conditions of communities. The growing attention on the NBS, triggered an increasing interest in developing integrated and multi-disciplinary frameworks for assessing NBS effectiveness accounting for the co-benefits production. Starting from the analysis of the existing frameworks, this work claims for a more direct engagement of stakeholders - i.e. co-benefits beneficiaries - in developing NBS assessment framework. This work aims at demonstrating that differences in co-benefits perception and valuation might lead to trade-offs and, thus, to potential conflicts. An innovative methodology using a quasi-dynamic Fuzzy Cognitive Map approach based on multiple-time-steps was developed in order to assess NBS effectiveness, and to detect and analyze trade-offs among stakeholders due to differences in co-benefits perception. The developed methodology was implemented in the Lower Danube case study. The trade-off analysis among stakeholders shows that they are quite low in the short term. Most of the potential conflicts can be detected in the long term, involving mainly the stakeholders that assigned a high value to the agricultural productivity variable. The results demonstrated that accounting for the different stakeholders' perception of the co-benefits is key for reducing trade-offs and enhance NBS acceptability.

Search for an Invisibly Decaying Z^{'} Boson at Belle II in e^{+}e^{-}→μ^{+}μ^{-}(e^{±}μ^{∓}) Plus Missing Energy Final States

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the Z^{'}. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a Z^{'} in the process e^{+}e^{-}→μ^{+}μ^{-}Z^{'} and of a lepton-flavor-violating Z^{'} in e^{+}e^{-}→e^{±}μ^{∓}Z^{'}. We do not find any excess of events and set 90% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an L_{μ}-L_{τ} theory, into upper limits on the Z^{'} coupling constant at the level of 5×10^{-2}-1 for M_{Z^{'}}≤6  GeV/c^{2}.

Abstract P2-14-24: Argon scalpel in the surgical treatment of breast cancer

Summary: Surgery is a key part of the treatment of breast cancer. The adoption of electric scalpel began to be used in breast surgeries in 1970 and this equipment uses high frequency electric current to create the following effects: cutting, coagulation or mixing of the two. Data show a decrease in the intraoperative bleeding, however, can also increase complications, such as seroma and thermal lesions in the surgical flaps. A new technique that could be used is the coagulation with argon plasma which is a method of non-contact thermal hemostasis.

Objectives: to compare the electric scalpel with the scalpel by coagulation with argon plasma about aspects surgical and pathological.

Methods: this is a prospective cohort study in which 60 patients with breast cancer were selected at the Discipline of Breast Diseases of the Department of Gynecology of the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) at any clinical stage where the surgical treatment was indicated, from March 2014 to August 2014. The patients were consecutively selected and randomized into two groups: electric scalpel surgery (ES) and argon plasma coagulation surgery (APC). Inclusion criteria were: 18 to 90 years old patients with breast cancer at any clinical stage where surgical (conservative or radical) treatment was indicated. Intraoperative bleeding was assessed by measuring the weights of the compresses. The patients who underwent surgery were evaluated at 7, 14 and 30 postoperative days. In these returns, the appearance of the surgical wound, the presence and amount of seroma (in mL), hematoma or infection were analyzed. Surgical site infection was considered when there was erythema, increased local or systemic temperature, pain, suture dehiscence or presence of purulent exudate. The surgical specimen was studied in the Department of Pathological Anatomy of UNIFESP. The pathological analysis as recommended by the WHO and particular evaluations were carried out in order to observe the extent and degree of the thermal effect produced in surgical specimens by the two hemostatic techniques (ES and APC).

Results: The mean age of the patients was 56.0 years for the ES group and 54.9 for the APC. There was no significant difference between the groups regarding intraoperative bleeding. However, a statistically significant difference was observed when the days with drain were compared in the postoperative period, with a mean of 10.1 days for the SE group and 7.1 days for the APC group. The study demonstrated that the APC group had a significant greater thermal effect on the margins of the surgical specimen.

Conclusions: the use of argon scalpel, when compared to the electric scalpel, allowed hemostasis to be performed adequately without altering the rates of bleeding, surgical time and postoperative complications, and reduced the number of days with the drain. The thermal effect on the surgical specimen was significant greater with the argon scalpel.

Changes in HCV Viremia following LDL Apheresis in a HCV Positive Patient with Familial Hypercholesterolemia

It has been suggested that hepatitis C virus (HCV) can be associated with beta-lipoprotein in human serum. According to this, the LDL receptor could promote endocytosis of such a virus. In the present study, we evaluated the changes in HCV viremia in a HCV positive patient with familial hypercholesterolemia, undergoing both selective (DALI System, Fresenius) and non-selective (plasma exchange) LDL apheresis. HCV-RNA levels did not decrease following selective LDL apheresis, on the contrary showed a random, odd variation pattern (from –35% to +72%). Conversely, plasma exchange steadily induced a drop in HCV viremia (–35/43%), to a lower extent than that of a totally intravascular plasmaprotein, i.e., alpha 2-macroglobulin (–53/54%). These data indicate that beta-lipoprotein may not function as a plasma carrier of HCV, at least in the present case. Moreover, a continuous, quantitatively unforeseeable circulation of HCV virions from the intravascular plasma compartment to other extravascular and intracellular sites, seems to occurr during an apheresis session.

Choosing New Adsorbents for Endogenous Ultrapure Infusion Fluid: Performances, Safety and Flow Distribution

Adsorption may notably contribute to the removal of uremic toxins and to the efficiency of hemodialysis. We examined different uncoated stationary matrixes, charcoals and synthetic resins to establish their adsorptive capacities in relation to low (urea, creatinine) and high molecular weight (β2-microglobulin, myoglobin) compounds in in vitro conditions (steady state and flow-through) using isotonic solutions or uremic ultrafiltrate. Trace metal, particle release analyses and scanning electron microscopy of different adsorbents were performed. Dynamic flow-distribution studies were made using 99Technetium and analysing the different regions of interest by single head γ-camera. We show that adsorbents may differ greatly as to their adsorptive capacity depending on flow rate, nature, and total mass of the compounds to be removed from the ultrafiltrate. These studies suggest a methodological approach for screening stationary matrixes for possible application in hemodialysis.

Usefulness of an ad hoc questionnaire (Acro-CQ) for the systematic assessment of acromegaly comorbidities at diagnosis and their management at follow-up

PURPOSE

To determine the validity of a self-administered questionnaire (Acro-CQ) developed to systematically assess the presence, type and time of onset of acromegaly comorbidities.

METHODS

This is a cross-sectional study; 105 acromegaly patients and 147 controls with other types of pituitary adenoma, referred to a specialized Italian Center, autonomously compiled Acro-CQ in an outpatient clinical setting. To test its reliability in a different setting, Acro-CQ was administered via mail to 78 patients with acromegaly and 100 with other pituitary adenomas, referred to a specialized US Center. Data obtained from questionnaires in both settings were compared with medical records (gold standard).

RESULTS

Demographics of patients and controls from both countries were similar. In both settings, >95 % of the questionnaires were completely filled; only one item was missed in the others. Concordance with medical record was excellent (k > 0.85) for most of the items, independently from the way of administration, patient age, gender and nationality, pituitary adenoma type and disease activity.

CONCLUSIONS

Acro-CQ is an inexpensive, highly accepted from patients and reliable tool recommended to expedite systematic collection of relevant clinical data in acromegaly at diagnosis, to be replicated at follow-ups. This tool may guide a targeted, cost-effective management of complications. Moreover, it could be applied to retrieve data for survey studies in both acromegaly and other pituitary adenomas, as information is easily and rapidly accessible for statistical analysis.

Prime Incision and Modified Moving Window: A Minimally Invasive Access for Breast Cancer Surgical Treatment

BACKGROUND

Conservative surgical treatment has been the treatment of choice for early breast cancer. It allows feasible oncological treatment with a satisfactory cosmetic approach and fast recovery. However, in some cases mastectomy is necessary. This study proposes a surgical approach with only one surgical access through the same incision, which is in line with precepts mentioned above. It is called the prime incision and modified moving window techniques.

METHODS

Thirty one patients with a breast cancer diagnosis who would have to undergo surgery were enrolled. The proposed technique was used and its advantages and feasibility were assessed and evaluated.

RESULTS

Twenty three conservative surgeries, 7 adenectomies and 1 axillary surgery were performed. All cases were appropriately treated and progressed without complications and had adequate aesthetic results. The technique presented allows only one surgical access to approach the axilla and breast cancer treatment.

CONCLUSION

This study proved the aesthetic advantage provided by only one surgical incision access feasible for surgical treatment as a secure approach. The minimally invasive approaches of prime incision and modified moving window were shown to provide adequate surgical access with only one scar, thus having a better cosmetic result.

The acute effect of a mineralocorticoid receptor agonist on corticotrope secretion in Addison's disease

PURPOSE

Mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) in the hippocampus display an important role in the control of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, mediating the ''proactive'' feedback of glucocorticoids (GC). Fludrocortisone (FC), a potent MR agonist, has been shown to decrease HPA activity through a hippocampal mechanism. Since it has been demonstrated that FC shows a significant inhibition of the HPA axis response to hCRH stimulus in normal subjects, also at doses usually administered as replacement therapy in patients with Addison's disease, an FC effect at MRs in human pituitary or a GR-pituitary agonism stronger than believed until now has been postulated.

METHODS

Ten patients affected by autoimmune Addison's disease received: (1) placebo p.o. + placebo i.v., (2) hydrocortisone (H) 10 mg p.o. + placebo i.v., (3) FC 0.1 mg p.o. + placebo i.v., (4) FC 0.1 mg and H 10 mg p.o. + placebo i.v. to verify a possible GR FC-mediated effect that might display a repercussion on the GC-replacement therapy.

RESULTS

H reduced ACTH (p < 0.01) and increased cortisol levels (p < 0.01) with respect to the placebo session, while FC did not affect either ACTH or cortisol levels compared to placebo, and higher ACTH and lower cortisol levels (p < 0.03 and p < 0.01) were observed compared with the H session; furthermore the co-administration of FC + H showed ACTH and cortisol profiles similar to that observed during H alone.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study showed a lack of FC effect on corticotrope secretion in Addison's disease, thus making unlikely the hypothesis of its GR pituitary agonism and the risk of glucocorticoid excess in primary adrenal insufficiency.

Measurement of the centrality dependence of the charged-particle pseudorapidity distribution in proton-lead collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV with the ATLAS detector

The centrality dependence of the mean charged-particle multiplicity as a function of pseudorapidity is measured in approximately 1 [Formula: see text]b[Formula: see text] of proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Charged particles with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.7 are reconstructed using the ATLAS pixel detector. The [Formula: see text] collision centrality is characterised by the total transverse energy measured in the Pb-going direction of the forward calorimeter. The charged-particle pseudorapidity distributions are found to vary strongly with centrality, with an increasing asymmetry between the proton-going and Pb-going directions as the collisions become more central. Three different estimations of the number of nucleons participating in the [Formula: see text] collision have been carried out using the Glauber model as well as two Glauber-Gribov inspired extensions to the Glauber model. Charged-particle multiplicities per participant pair are found to vary differently for these three models, highlighting the importance of including colour fluctuations in nucleon-nucleon collisions in the modelling of the initial state of [Formula: see text] collisions.

Depression in multiple sclerosis: effect of brain derived neurotrophic factor Val66Met polymorphism and disease perception

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Depression is common amongst subjects with multiple sclerosis (MS), and several investigations have explored different determinants of this condition, including physical disability, psychological and psychosocial factors. The brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val66Met polymorphism has been associated with depression. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of disease-related factors, BDNF Val66Met polymorphism and perception of disease on the severity of depression in MS.

METHOD

In total, 136 MS patients (88 women) were recruited and genotyped for BDNF rs6265 polymorphism at nucleotide 196 (G/A) using 'high resolution melting'. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Multiple Sclerosis Depression Rating Scale. Perception of health status was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire.

RESULTS

A multivariable linear regression model showed that the best predictors of depression were the SF-36 General health (β = -0.209; P = 0.013), Mental health (β = -0.410; P < 0.001) and Social activity (β = -0.195; P = 0.035) scores; physical disability (assessed by the Extended Disability Status Scale score) was directly correlated to depression severity on univariate analysis, but it was not a relevant predictor of depression on multivariate analysis; other variables directly related to the disease (treatment, annual relapsing rate) and the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism were not significantly associated with depression.

CONCLUSION

Perception of the health status is the principal predictor of depressive symptoms in our sample. This result supports the hypothesis that the subjective interpretation of the disease's consequences is one of the main factors in determining depression in MS.

Two-particle Bose-Einstein correlations in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] 0.9 and 7 TeV measured with the ATLAS detector

The paper presents studies of Bose-Einstein Correlations (BEC) for pairs of like-sign charged particles measured in the kinematic range [Formula: see text] 100 MeV and [Formula: see text] 2.5 in proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 0.9 and 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The integrated luminosities are approximately 7 [Formula: see text]b[Formula: see text], 190 [Formula: see text]b[Formula: see text] and 12.4 nb[Formula: see text] for 0.9 TeV, 7 TeV minimum-bias and 7 TeV high-multiplicity data samples, respectively. The multiplicity dependence of the BEC parameters characterizing the correlation strength and the correlation source size are investigated for charged-particle multiplicities of up to 240. A saturation effect in the multiplicity dependence of the correlation source size parameter is observed using the high-multiplicity 7 TeV data sample. The dependence of the BEC parameters on the average transverse momentum of the particle pair is also investigated.

Mechanical and structural comparison between primary tumor and lymph node metastasis cells in colorectal cancer

SW480 and SW620 colon carcinoma cell lines derive from primary tumour and lymph-node metastasis of the same patient, respectively. For this reason, these cells represent an ideal system to analyse phenotypic variations associated with the metastatic process. In this study we analysed SW480 and SW620 cytoskeleton remodelling by measuring the cells' mechanics and morphological properties using different microscopic techniques. We observed that different specialized functions of cells, i.e. the capacity to metastasize of elongated cells inside the primary tumour and the ability to intravasate and resist shear forces of the stream of cells derived from lymph node metastasis, are reflected in their mechanical properties. We demonstrated that, together with stiffness and adhesion between the AFM tip and the cell surface, cell shape, actin organization and surface roughness are strictly related and are finely modulated by colorectal cancer cells to better accomplish their specific tasks in cancer growth and invasion.

Identification and energy calibration of hadronically decaying tau leptons with the ATLAS experiment in pp collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]

This paper describes the trigger and offline reconstruction, identification and energy calibration algorithms for hadronic decays of tau leptons employed for the data collected from pp collisions in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC center-of-mass energy [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]. The performance of these algorithms is measured in most cases with [Formula: see text] decays to tau leptons using the full 2012 dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb[Formula: see text]. An uncertainty on the offline reconstructed tau energy scale of 2-4 %, depending on transverse energy and pseudorapidity, is achieved using two independent methods. The offline tau identification efficiency is measured with a precision of 2.5 % for hadronically decaying tau leptons with one associated track, and of 4 % for the case of three associated tracks, inclusive in pseudorapidity and for a visible transverse energy greater than 20 [Formula: see text]. For hadronic tau lepton decays selected by offline algorithms, the tau trigger identification efficiency is measured with a precision of 2-8 %, depending on the transverse energy. The performance of the tau algorithms, both offline and at the trigger level, is found to be stable with respect to the number of concurrent proton-proton interactions and has supported a variety of physics results using hadronically decaying tau leptons at ATLAS.
