Audiogenic Seizures in the Streptozotocin-Induced Rat Alzheimer's Disease Model

BACKGROUND

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative and progressive disorder with no cure and constant failures in clinical trials. The main AD hallmarks are amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and neurodegeneration. However, many other events have been implicated in AD pathogenesis. Epilepsy is a common comorbidity of AD and there is important evidence indicating a bidirectional link between these two disorders. Some studies suggest that disturbed insulin signaling might play an important role in this connection.

OBJECTIVE

To understand the effects of neuronal insulin resistance in the AD-epilepsy link.

METHODS

We submitted the streptozotocin (STZ) induced rat AD Model (icv-STZ AD) to an acute acoustic stimulus (AS), a known trigger of seizures. We also assessed animals' performance in the memory test, the Morris water maze and the neuronal activity (c-Fos protein) induced by a single audiogenic seizure in regions that express high levels of insulin receptors.

RESULTS

We identified significant memory impairment and seizures in 71.43% of all icv-STZ/AS rats, in contrast to 22.22% of the vehicle group. After seizures, icv-STZ/AS rats presented higher number of c-Fos immunopositive cells in hippocampal, cortical, and hypothalamic regions.

CONCLUSION

STZ may facilitate seizure generation and propagation by impairment of neuronal function, especially in regions that express high levels of insulin receptors. The data presented here indicate that the icv-STZ AD model might have implications not only for AD, but also for epilepsy. Finally, impaired insulin signaling might be one of the mechanisms by which AD presents a bidirectional connection to epilepsy.

A Genetic Model of Epilepsy with a Partial Alzheimer's Disease-Like Phenotype and Central Insulin Resistance

Studies have suggested an important connection between epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease (AD), mostly due to the high number of patients diagnosed with AD who develop epileptic seizures later on. However, this link is not well understood. Previous studies from our group have identified memory impairment and metabolic abnormalities in the Wistar audiogenic rat (WAR) strain, a genetic model of epilepsy. Our goal was to investigate AD behavioral and molecular alterations, including brain insulin resistance, in naïve (seizure-free) animals of the WAR strain. We used the Morris water maze (MWM) test to evaluate spatial learning and memory performance and hippocampal tissue to verify possible molecular and immunohistochemical alterations. WARs presented worse performance in the MWM test (p < 0.0001), higher levels of hyperphosphorylated tau (S396) (p < 0.0001) and phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase 3 (S21/9) (p < 0.05), and lower insulin receptor levels (p < 0.05). Conversely, WARs and Wistar controls present progressive increase in amyloid fibrils (p < 0.0001) and low levels of soluble amyloid-β. Interestingly, the detected alterations were age-dependent, reaching larger differences in aged than in young adult animals. In summary, the present study provides evidence of a partial AD-like phenotype, including altered regulation of insulin signaling, in a genetic model of epilepsy. Together, these data contribute to the understanding of the connection between epilepsy and AD as comorbidities. Moreover, since both tau hyperphosphorylation and altered insulin signaling have already been reported in epilepsy and AD, these two events should be considered as important components in the interconnection between epilepsy and AD pathogenesis and, therefore, potential therapeutic targets in this field.

Validation and measurement invariance of the muscularity-oriented eating test among Brazilian men and women

OBJECTIVE

The Muscularity-Oriented Eating Test (MOET) is a 15-item unidimensional scale, designed to assess eating practices that occur in the pursuit of a muscular body. The aim of the present study was to describe the translation and cultural adaptation of the MOET to Brazilian Portuguese, to explore its factor structure and measurement invariance, and to evaluate its internal consistency, three-week test-retest reliability, and convergent validity in a community sample of Brazilian men and women.

METHOD

After the back-translation procedure, the Brazilian MOET was administered online to a sample of 1246 adults (634 men and 612 women), along with measures of drive for muscularity, muscle dysmorphia symptoms, muscular/athletic-ideal internalization, disordered eating behaviors, and exercise dependence.

RESULTS

Findings from an exploratory factor analysis and a confirmatory factor analysis revealed a one-factor structure and adequate internal consistency for men (ω = 0.86; α = 0.86) and women (ω = .84; α = .83). Measurement invariance across gender was supported. In addition, the scale demonstrated good three week test-retest reliability for both men (ICC = .96; p < .001) and women (ICC = .92; p < .001), and the subscales revealed moderate to large associations with drive for muscularity, muscle dysmorphia symptoms, muscular/athletic-ideal internalization, disordered eating, and exercise dependence.

CONCLUSION

This study supports the validity and reliability of the MOET in a community sample of Brazilian men and women and represents an advance in measures of muscularity-oriented disordered eating in Brazilian adults, allowing for future cross-cultural studies in this field.

PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE

The Muscularity-Oriented Eating Test (MOET) is a measure of muscularity-oriented disordered eating, which assess strict adherence to diet rules, including the food's macronutrient content, regulation of protein intake, and eating less or more to influence muscle gain. This study evaluated the validity and reliability of the MOET in a community sample of Brazilian men and women. Our findings represent an advance in measures of muscularity-oriented disordered eating in Brazilian adults.

EQUATION FOR EATING DISORDER RISK BEHAVIORS IN FEMALE ATHLETES

ABSTRACT Introduction: It is difficult to detect athletes at risk of eating disorders. Objective: The aim of this study was to create a predictive equation for eating disorder risk behaviors (EDRB) in female athletes. Methods: 484 athletes participated in the study. The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) was used to assess EDRB. The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 was used to analyze the sociocultural influence on body image. The Body Shape Questionnaire and the Body Checking and Avoidance Questionnaire were used to assess body dissatisfaction in relation to thinness, and body checking, respectively. Skinfold thickness, body weight and height were also measured. The demographic data collected were age and weekly training regime. Results: The findings indicate that body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BF%), sociocultural influence, body checking and body dissatisfaction in relation to thinness explain 23% of the EDRB variance (p = 0.001). The results showed no difference between the EAT-26 scores and the predictive equation (p = 0.27). Conclusion: It was concluded that the predictive equation is reliable for evaluating EDRB in female athletes. Level of evidence III; study case-control.

Translation and validation of a Brazilian Portuguese version of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 in Brazilian adults

We examined the psychometric properties of a Brazilian Portuguese translation of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2; Tylka & Wood-Barcalow, 2015). A sample of 990 Brazilian adults (560 women, 430 men; M_age = 31.10, SD = 8.94) completed the BAS-2 and measures of life satisfaction, self-esteem, actual-ideal weight discrepancy (women only), breast size dissatisfaction (women only), drive for muscularity (men only), and disordered eating behaviours. Exploratory factor analyses indicated that BAS-2 scores reduced to a single dimension with all 10 items in women and men. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the fit of this one-dimensional factor structure following freeing of error covariances between two pairs of items. BAS-2 scores achieved full scalar invariance across sex, and men had significantly higher BAS-2 scores than women. Internal consistency coefficients were adequate and test-retest reliability was supported up to three weeks in a subsample of 221 participants (140 women, 81 men). Evidence of construct validity was demonstrated through positive associations with indices of psychological well-being and negative associations with indices of negative body image and disordered eating behaviours. Availability of a Brazilian Portuguese translation of the BAS-2 should help to promote greater understanding of positive body image in the Brazilian context.

DO TRAINING REGIMEN AND COMPETITIVE LEVEL AFFECT BODY IMAGE DISSATISFACTION (LEANNESS AND MUSCLE TONE) IN FEMALE ATHLETES?

ABSTRACT Introduction Studies that seek analyze the relationship between sport variables and body image are importants, because indicate if the competitive sport environment influence on body feelings of athlete. Objective To analyze the relationship between sports variables (training regimen and competitive level) and dissatisfaction in regard to leanness and muscle tone in female athletes. Methods One hundred and eighty female athletes aged over 12 years from various sport disciplines participated in the study. We used the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) to assess dissatisfaction in regard to leanness. The dissatisfaction subscale of Drive for Muscularity Scale (DMS) was used to evaluate dissatisfaction with muscle tone. Training regimen (frequency x daily hours of training) and competitive level were acquired through a questionnaire developed by the actual investigators. Results The findings indicated a statistically significant relationship between the training regimen (F(1, 179)=4.01; p=0.047) and competitive level (F(2, 178)=3.59; p=0.031) and the BSQ scores. Moreover, the results indicated a statistically significant relationship between the training regimen (F(1, 179)=4.01; p=0.047) and the competitive level (F(2, 178)=3.59; p=0.031), with DMS dissatisfaction subscale scores. Conclusion Sports variables (training regimen and competitive level) were related to dissatisfaction in regard to leanness and muscle tone, although they demonstrated different magnitudes. Psychometric properties of the Breast Size Rating Scale (BSRS) in Brazilian university women

The present study examined the psychometric properties of a Brazilian Portuguese translation of the Breast Size Rating Scale (BSRS). A total of 194 Brazilian university women completed the BSRS along with measures of body satisfaction, body appreciation, weight discrepancy, and attitudes toward societal appearance ideals. They also had their actual bra size and body mass indices (BMIs) objectively measured. Results indicated evidence of adequate convergent validity insofar as greater breast size dissatisfaction was significantly associated with greater weight discrepancy, higher BMI, lower body appreciation, lower body satisfaction, greater use of information from society about appearance ideals, greater perceived pressure from society about appearance ideals, and greater internalisation of general and athletic appearance ideals, respectively. In our sample, 20.6% of women reported no breast size dissatisfaction, 65.5% desired a larger breast size, and 13.9% desired a smaller breast size. Findings demonstrate that BSRS scores are psychometrically sound and that breast size dissatisfaction is common among Brazilian women.

Efeito da Ansiedade Competitiva sobre a Tomada de Decisão em Jovens Atletas de Voleibol

Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi analisar o efeito da ansiedade competitiva sobre a tomada de decisão de jovens atletas de voleibol. A amostra foi composta por 24 voluntários do sexo masculino (16,06 ±0,65 anos). Utilizou-se a versão brasileira do Competitite State Anxiety Inventory para avaliar a ansiedade competitiva. A tomada de decisão foi avaliada em situação real de jogo, adotando-se os critérios do Game Performance Assessment Instrument (GPAI). Localizaram-se correlações negativas da ansiedade cognitiva e ansiedade somática com o índice de tomada de decisão (p<0,05). Revelaram-se correlações positivas entre a “autoconfiança” e o índice de tomada de decisão (p<0,05). Revelou-se influência da ansiedade cognitiva, somática e autoconfiança no índice de tomada de decisão (p<0,05). Concluiu-se que a ansiedade pode ser considerada um fator interveniente na tomada de decisão.

Cafeteria diet during lactation and/or post-lactation altered lipid profile/lipid peroxidation and increased anxiety-like behavior in male rat offspring

Objective: Evaluate the impact of the cafeteria diet during lactation and/or post-lactation on physiological parameters and anxiety in the offspring of Wistar rats. Methods: Male offspring of Wistar rats (n = 60) were randomized into four groups: Control (C), Lactation Cafeteria (LC), Post-lactation Cafeteria (PC) and Total Cafeteria (TC). Later in adult life the animals were submitted to the behavioral (elevated plus-maze and open field) and biological (body weight, consumption and food preference, glycemia, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol, triglycerides, total proteins, urea, creatinine, bilirubin, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, serum protein, and oxidative stress) evaluations. The data were submitted to ANOVA, followed by the Newman-Keuls test (p < 0.05). Results: Animals treated with the cafeteria diet presented greater weight measurements compared to the control group. Triglyceride levels were higher in the PC group than in the other groups. MDA levels were higher in the PC and TC group than CL and C. The animals of the PC and TC groups presented higher levels of anxiety compared to the C and LC groups. No significant differences due to diet were observed in the locomotor and exploratory behaviors. Conclusions: The cafeteria diet ingestion was capable of triggering biological and behavioral alterations in rats.

Genetic ACE I/D and ACTN3 R577X polymorphisms and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

The etiology of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis remains unknown. Angiotensin-converting enzyme and α-actinin-3 polymorphisms influence the characteristics of muscle fibers. The aim of this study was to examine the association between idiopathic scoliosis and genetic polymorphism of angiotensin-converting enzyme and α-actinin-3. Ninety-seven females with scoliosis, and 137 healthy, age-matched control females were studied. The presence of polymorphisms was determined by PCR. A χ² test was used to analyze differences, and odds ratios were estimated. The frequencies of ACE genotypes in the scoliotic group were 46.4% DD, 45.4% ID, and 8.2% II, while in the control group they were 40.1% DD, 43.8% ID, and 16.1% II (P = 0.197). The D allele had a frequency of 69.1% in patients with idiopathic scoliosis and 62% in the control group (P = 0.116). The frequencies of ACTN3 genotypes in females with scoliosis were 31.8% RR, 49.4% RX, and 18.8% XX, while in the control group they were 35% RR, 49% RX, and 16% XX (P = 0.810). The frequency of the R allele was 56.4% in the scoliotic group and 59.6% in the control group (P = 0.518). There was no statistically significant association between angiotensin-converting enzyme or α-actinin-3 polymorphisms and the presence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in females.

O treinamento mental gera efeito positivo na ansiedade competitiva de jovens nadadores?

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1980-0037.2016v18n3p353 The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of mental training on the competitive anxiety of young swimmers. The sample consisted of 35 swimmers aged 15 - 17 years (M = 15.93; SD = 0.98), randomly divided into two groups: experimental group (EG, n = 17) and control group (CG, n = 18). The study lasted eight weeks. Both groups performed the same physical/technical training planning. CG watched advertisement videos while EG performed mental training. The Competitive State Anxiety Inventory (CSAI-2R) was administered to all athletes before the start of the season and the last week of the “taper” mesocycle. The findings revealed that the “cognitive anxiety” and “somatic anxiety” subscale scores attenuated from pre-test to post-test in EG (p = 0.01) and remained stable in CG (p = 0.15). The results showed that the “self-confidence” subscale score increased from pre-test to post-test in EG (p = 0.01) and remained stable in CG (p = 0.26). Significant difference was found in “cognitive anxiety” (p = 0.01), “somatic anxiety” (p = 0.01) and “self-confidence” (p = 0.01) subscales across EG and CG after 8 weeks. It was concluded that mental training was effective in reducing anxiety (cognitive and somatic) and increasing the self-confidence of young swimmers. 

Etiological model of disordered eating behaviors in Brazilian adolescent girls

The objective was to construct an etiological model of disordered eating behaviors in Brazilian adolescent girls. A total of 1,358 adolescent girls from four cities participated. The study used psychometric scales to assess disordered eating behaviors, body dissatisfaction, media pressure, self-esteem, mood, depressive symptoms, and perfectionism. Weight, height, and skinfolds were measured to calculate body mass index (BMI) and percent body fat (%F). Structural equation modeling explained 76% of variance in disordered eating behaviors (F(9, 1,351) = 74.50; p = 0.001). The findings indicate that body dissatisfaction mediated the relationship between media pressures, self-esteem, mood, BMI, %F, and disordered eating behaviors (F(9, 1,351) = 59.89; p = 0.001). Although depressive symptoms were not related to body dissatisfaction, the model indicated a direct relationship with disordered eating behaviors (F(2, 1,356) = 23.98; p = 0.001). In conclusion, only perfectionism failed to fit the etiological model of disordered eating behaviors in Brazilian adolescent girls.

Insatisfação corporal de adolescentes atletas e não atletas de ginástica artística

This study aimed to verify possible links between body dissatisfaction and media influence, perfectionism, mood and risk behavior for eating disorders and to compare the study variables among artistic gymnastics elite and non-elite athletes and non-athletes. Participants were 413 adolescents of both sexes (elite and non-elite athletes and non-athletes), aged 10-18 years (mean age 12.86 ± 1.80). BSQ, EAT-26, SATAQ-3, MPS and BRUMS were applied to evaluate body dissatisfaction, risk behavior for eating disorders, media influence, perfectionism and mood, respectively. Anthropometric data were collected to estimate body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (%BF). Descriptive statistical, comparative and correlational analyses were held. Only EAT-26 influenced BSQ in the three groups. In non-athletes, BMI, BRUMS and SATAQ-3 added explanation to the model. For non-elite athletes, %BF, media influence and mood were also predictors of body dissatisfaction. Elite athletes had lower BMI and %BF than the others. Non-athletes had lower perfectionism scores while non-elite athletes athletes had lower mood scores. It could be concluded that the risk behavior for eating disorders is the factor most strongly related to body dissatisfaction among elite and non-elite athletes and non-athletes.

Assessment of Body Image: Instruments Available in Brazil

Abstract Because of the increasing number of Brazilian studies on body image (BI), the aim of the present study was to review Brazilian scientific research on the construction and adaptation of systematic assessment instruments for this construct. After conducting a broad literature search, 34 BI assessment studies were analyzed, including 27 adaptation studies and seven construction studies. The results were summarized based on the procedures that were used for the adaptation and construction of BI assessment instruments, indicating strong convergence among most researchers with regard to national and international recommendations on techniques to drive such processes and test the psychometric properties before implementing the instruments in professional practice.

Gender differences in body image and preferences for an ideal silhouette among Brazilian undergraduates

The aim of this study was to investigate gender differences in the accuracy of body size estimation and body dissatisfaction among Brazilian undergraduates and their relationships with perceptions of the ideal body silhouettes that would be selected by same-gender and opposite-gender peers. A total of 159 undergraduates (79 males) from a public University in Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil, participated in the study. They completed a Figure Rating Scale and indicated the figure that best describes the size of their own body (actual), their desired body, the body they judged would be ideal to same-gender peers, and the body they judged would be ideal to opposite-gender peers. The results showed that women were less precise in estimating their actual size and more dissatisfied. The mean Body Mass Index (BMI) that was selected as “current” by women was significantly higher than their desired and ideal BMIs, whereas the mean BMIs that were selected by men were practically the same. Men and women selected ideal silhouettes for their own gender that were the same as those that were selected as ideal by the opposite gender. The mean BMIs that were actually chosen by men and women as desired and ideal were closer to the upper end of normal weight and lower end of overweight, respectively. Such results contradict what has been assumed to be a normative characteristic of men and women in several countries, raising some doubts regarding the role of beliefs about judgments of the opposite gender in the development of body image disturbances.

Inhibition of long-term potentiation in the schaffer-CA1 pathway by repetitive high-intensity sound stimulation

High-intensity sound can induce seizures in susceptible animals. After repeated acoustic stimuli changes in behavioural seizure repertoire and epileptic EEG activity might be seen in recruited limbic and forebrain structures, a phenomenon known as audiogenic kindling. It is postulated that audiogenic kindling can produce synaptic plasticity events leading to the spread of epileptogenic activity to the limbic system. In order to test this hypothesis, we investigated if long-term potentiation (LTP) of hippocampal Schaffer-CA1 synapses and spatial navigation memory are altered by a repeated high-intensity sound stimulation (HISS) protocol, consisting of one-minute 120 dB broadband noise applied twice a day for 10 days, in normal Wistar rats and in audiogenic seizure-prone rats (Wistar Audiogenic Rats - WARs). After HISS all WARs exhibited midbrain seizures and 50% of these animals developed limbic recruitment, while only 26% of Wistar rats presented midbrain seizures and none of them had limbic recruitment. In naïve animals, LTP in hippocampal CA1 neurons was induced by 50- or 100-Hz high-frequency stimulation of Schaffer fibres in slices from both Wistar and WAR animals similarly. Surprisingly, HISS suppressed LTP in CA1 neurons in slices from Wistar rats that did not present any seizure, and inhibited LTP in slices from Wistar rats with only midbrain seizures. However HISS had no effect on LTP in CA1 neurons from slices of WARs. Interestingly HISS did not alter spatial navigation and memory in both strains. These findings show that repeated high-intensity sound stimulation prevent LTP of Schaffer-CA1 synapses from Wistar rats, without affecting spatial memory. This effect was not seen in hippocampi from audiogenic seizure-prone WARs. In WARs the link between auditory stimulation and hippocampal LTP seems to be disrupted which could be relevant for the susceptibility to seizures in this strain.

Autoestima, insatisfação corporal e internalização do ideal de magreza influenciam os comportamentos de risco para transtornos alimentares?

OBJETIVO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar a influência da autoestima, da insatisfação corporal e da internalização do ideal de magreza nos comportamentos de risco para transtornos alimentares de adolescentes do sexo feminino. MÉTODOS: Participaram do estudo 471 jovens. Utilizou-se a Escala de Autoestima de Rosemberg, o Body Shape Questionnaire e o Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 para avaliar autoestima, insatisfação corporal e internalização do ideal de magreza, respectivamente. As subescalas do Eating Attitudes Test foram utilizadas para avaliar os comportamentos de risco para transtornos alimentares. RESULTADOS: Os resultados indicaram influência dos escores do Body Shape Questionnaire (p<0,05) e da Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 (p<0,05) em todas as subescalas do Eating Attitudes Test. Em contrapartida, os achados não demonstraram influência da Escala de Autoestima de Rosemberg nos escores das subescalas do Eating Attitudes Test (p>0,05). CONCLUSÃO: Concluiu-se que a insatisfação corporal e a internalização do ideal de magreza influenciam os comportamentos de risco para transtornos alimentares em adolescentes do sexo feminino, fato que não foi evidenciado para a autoestima.

Body image in Brazil: recent advances in the state of knowledge and methodological issues

OBJECTIVE

To analyze Brazilian literature on body image and the theoretical and methodological advances that have been made.

METHODS

A detailed review was undertaken of the Brazilian literature on body image, selecting published articles, dissertations and theses from the SciELO, SCOPUS, LILACS and PubMed databases and the CAPES thesis database. Google Scholar was also used. There was no start date for the search, which used the following search terms: “body image” AND “Brazil” AND “scale(s)”; “body image” AND “Brazil” AND “questionnaire(s)”; “body image” AND “Brazil” AND “instrument(s)”; “body image” limited to Brazil and “body image”.

RESULTS

The majority of measures available were intended to be used in college students, with half of them evaluating satisfaction/dissatisfaction with the body. Females and adolescents of both sexes were the most studied population. There has been a significant increase in the number of available instruments. Nevertheless, numerous published studies have used non-validated instruments, with much confusion in the use of the appropriate terms (e.g., perception, dissatisfaction, distortion).

CONCLUSIONS

Much more is needed to understand body image within the Brazilian population, especially in terms of evaluating different age groups and diversifying the components/dimensions assessed. However, interest in this theme is increasing, and important steps have been taken in a short space of time.

Efeitos do estado de humor sobre os comportamentos alimentares inadequados de atletas de atletismo

O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar os efeitos do estado de humor sobre os comportamentos alimentares inadequados (CAI) em atletas. Participaram 68 atletas de atletismo, do sexo feminino, com idades entre 12 e 17 anos. Utilizaram-se o Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) e a Escala de Humor de Brunel (BRUMS) para avaliar os CAI e o distúrbio total do humor (DTH), respectivamente. Dois modelos de regressão linear não indicaram influência estatisticamente significativa da BRUMS nas subescalas Dieta (p=0,42) e Bulimia e Preocupação com Alimentos (p=0,81) do EAT-26. Ao contrário, a BRUMS (p=0,04) demonstrou impacto significante (7%) sobre os escores da subescala Autocontrole Oral. Concluiu-se que as atletas com DTH elevado podem estar mais susceptíveis à influência ambiental para a ingestão alimentar.

Estudo de validação e fidedignidade de escalas de silhuetas brasileiras em adolescentes

Objetivou-se avaliar a validade de construto e a fidedignidade das escalas de silhuetas de Kakeshita (2008) em adolescentes brasileiros. Após a condução do teste-reteste em 112 participantes com intervalo de um mês, os resultados demonstraram que as escalas foram capazes de discriminar os diferentes grupos de estado nutricional em ambos os sexos; apresentaram coeficientes de correlação entre IMC real, IMC atual e insatisfação e coeficientes de correlação intraclasse elevados, comprovando que o instrumento é apropriado para avaliar a imagem corporal nessa faixa etária.

Memory, learning, and participation of the cholinergic system in young rats exposed to environmental enrichment

The present study demonstrates the consequences of animal exposure to an enriched environment compared to animals living in a standard environment regarding learning and space memory. Male albino Wistar rats were exposed to an enriched environment for 4 weeks after the lactation period and tested in the Morris water maze in the distal and proximal clue version and in the arena. In the former test, the animals were tested at 50 days of age with 12 daily trials on two consecutive days. At the end of each session, scopolamine at the dose of 0.6 mg/kg/ml or saline solution was injected intraperitoneally. Twenty-eight days after the first phase, a new test consisting of a single trial was held (retest). An independent group of animals receiving no drug was subjected to the arena test and to the proximal clue version of the Morris maze. In the distal clue version the results did not show differences between groups in the first phase of the experiment. After 28 days (retest), the animals reared in a standard environment and treated with scopolamine exhibited a significant increase in latency compared to the group receiving the same drug and stimulated and to the group receiving saline. The arena data demonstrated a significant increase in exploratory activity in the group of animals reared in an enriched environment. The proximal clue version of the Morris maze did not show differences between groups. The results of the present study indicate that animals exposed to environmental enrichment react less to the amnesic effects of scopolamine and show an increase in exploratory activity.

Early postnatal protein malnutrition causes resistance to the anxiolytic effects of diazepam as assessed by the fear-potentiated startle test

Given that protein malnutrition induces structural, neurochemical and functional changes in the CNS, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of different early periods of protein malnutrition on the behavior and reactivity to diazepam (DZ) in a model of anxiety: the fear-potentiated startle (FPS). Male Wistar rats (n = 110) from well-nourished (16 %-protein) or malnourished (6%-protein) litters were distributed in five different groups: W (well-nourished), M7 (malnourished for 7-days, since day 0), M14 (14-days), M21 (21-days) and M28 (28-days). The results obtained in FPS revealed that malnourished-animals acquired the startle response, irrespective of the time they were exposed to the diet. Besides, DZ reduced the startle amplitude in the noise-alone and light-noise trials. The data concerning the total freezing time showed that the expression of this response was affected by malnutrition and varied in accordance with the findings of previous studies in which malnutrition procedures was imposed for long periods (more than 50 days). Therefore, we suggest that early protein malnutrition: (a) did not produce deficits in the associative learning process of these animals in the FPS, and (b) decreased freezing time in the FPS and produce hyporeactivity to the effects of DZ in rats malnourished for 21 days or more, indicating alterations in the GABAergic neurotransmitter system.

"Living well but looking good: a modern health dichotomy": a brief overview on women's body image

Living well but looking good. This health dichotomy is among the majors concerns in modern Western societies, especially for women. But what is "living well"? And what does it mean to "look good"? Are these concepts exclusionary or are they related in females' minds? In this paper, we sought to discuss such approaches by defining these terms, highlighting the current role of women within our society, and the importance of the body to Brazilian women. Moreover, the possible consequences on health of having a negative perception of the own body are raised, including its relation to physical activity.

In silico prediction of conserved vaccine targets in Streptococcus agalactiae strains isolated from fish, cattle, and human samples

Streptococcus agalactiae (Lancefield group B; group B streptococci) is a major pathogen that causes meningoencephalitis in fish, mastitis in cows, and neonatal sepsis and meningitis in humans. The available prophylactic measures for conserving human and animal health are not totally effective and have limitations. Effective vaccines against the different serotypes or genotypes of pathogenic strains from the various hosts would be useful. We used an in silico strategy to identify conserved vaccine candidates in 15 genomes of group B streptococci strains isolated from human, bovine, and fish samples. The degree of conservation, subcellular localization, and immunogenic potential of S. agalactiae proteins were investigated. We identified 36 antigenic proteins that were conserved in all 15 genomes. Among these proteins, 5 and 23 were shared only by human or fish strains, respectively. These potential vaccine targets may help develop effective vaccines that will help prevent S. agalactiae infection.

Eating behaviours in youths: A comparison between female and male athletes and non-athletes

This study compared the different factors associated with eating behaviors among young female and male athletes and non-athletes. A total of 580 female and male athletes and 362 female and male non-athletes between 10 and 19 years old participated. We used the subscales of the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) to evaluate the factors associated with unhealthy eating behaviors. We found higher scores for females on the diet subscale compared with males, regardless of athletic group (P < 0.05). Non-athlete youths scored higher on this subscale compared with male athletes (P < 0.05). Our findings indicate higher scores for female athletes with regard to the bulimia and preoccupation with food subscale compared with other the groups (P < 0.05). Moreover, we observed that non-athlete males were more likely to engage in binge eating compared with athletes of the same sex (P < 0.05). Finally, females had higher scores on the oral self subscale than males, regardless of athletic group (P < 0.05). We concluded that the factors associated with eating behaviors differ with regard to sex and group.

Indicadores antropométricos de insatisfação corporal e de comportamentos alimentares inadequados em jovens atletas

INTRODUÇÃO: Altos valores de índice de massa corporal (IMC) e percentual de gordura (%G) parecem estar associados à insatisfação corporal (IC) e aos comportamentos alimentares inadequados (CAI). OBJETIVO: Identificar a influência de variáveis antropométricas sobre a IC e o CAI em atletas adolescentes competitivos. MÉTODO: Trata-se de uma análise transversal com 580 participantes com idades entre dez e 19 anos de ambos os sexos, praticantes de diversas modalidades esportivas. Aplicou-se o Body Shape Questionnaire para mensurar a IC. Utilizou-se o Eating Attitudes Test para avaliar CAI. Foram aferidas dobras cutâneas para estimar o percentual de gordura (%G). Mensurou-se peso e estatura para calcular-se o IMC. Conduziu-se regressão linear múltipla para avaliar influências das variáveis independentes sobre os desfechos do estudo. RESULTADOS: Os resultados evidenciaram que a IC no sexo feminino foi modulada apenas pelo %G, ao contrário do sexo masculino, em que IMC e %G, juntos, explicaram parte de sua variância (p < 0,05). O CAI no sexo masculino foi pouco influenciado pelo %G. CONCLUSÃO: O %G foi a única variável que influenciou a IC em ambos os sexos. Ademais, os CAI em jovens atletas parecem não ser influenciados por características antropométricas.

Grau de comprometimento psicológico ao exercício e comparação da insatisfação corporal de atletas participantes do panamericano escolar

INTRODUÇÃO: O esporte de rendimento parece ser um agente potencializador para o surgimento de transtornos psicopatológicos, sendo, portanto, pertinente avaliar o grau de comprometimento psicológico ao exercício e aspectos da imagem corporal em atletas adolescentes de elite, já que estas variáveis são fatores de risco para desencadeamento de transtornos alimentares. OBJETIVO: Comparar a insatisfação corporal entre diferentes modalidades esportivas e verificar a influência da mesma sobre o grau de comprometimento psicológico ao exercício em atletas adolescentes competitivos. MÉTODOS: A amostra do estudo foi constituída por 65 atletas adolescentes de diversas modalidades esportivas de ambos os sexos. Para avaliar a insatisfação corporal foi aplicado o body shape questionnaire (BSQ) e o grau de comprometimento psicológico com o hábito de se exercitar foi avaliado pela escala de dedicação ao exercício (EDE). RESULTADOS: A insatisfação com a própria imagem foi observada em 21,5% dos participantes com diferença entre as modalidades (p < 0,05), o que não ocorreu com a EDE (p > 0,05). Além disso, a insatisfação influenciou 12% na modulação do grau de comprometimento psicológico ao exercício (p < 0,05). CONCLUSÃO: Dessa forma, conclui-se que, para esta amostra, a taxa de satisfação corporal foi alta e pouco relacionada ao grau de comprometimento ao exercício.

The status of conservation of urban forests in eastern Amazonia

This study aims to identify the remnant tree flora in six forest fragments in the metropolitan area of Belém and to analyze these fragments in terms of biological conservation, species richness and diversity in the local urban landscape. The fragments and their respective sampling areas were as follows: Amafrutas reserve (15 ha), Trambioca Is. reserve (2 ha), Bosque Rodrigues Alves city park (15 ha), Combu Is. reserve (10 ha), Gunma Park reserve (10 ha) and Mocambo reserve (5 ha). Inventories were built from lineal plots of 250 m² and included trees with DBH equal to or greater than 10 cm at a height of 1.3 m above ground. Sixty-nine families and 759 species, of which eight were officially listed as endangered (Brazilian National Flora: Ministry of Environment, Normative Instruction of September, 2008; Pará State Flora: Decree Nº. 802 of February 2008) were recorded. These endangered species are: Aspidosperma desmanthum Benth. ex Müll. Arg. (Apocynaceae), Cedrela odorata L. (Meliaceae), Eschweilera piresii S.A Mori (Lecythidaceae), Euxylophora paraensis Huber (Rutaceae), Hymenolobium excelsum Ducke (Leguminosae), Manilkara huberi (Ducke) Chevalier (Sapotaceae), Tabebuia impetiginosa (Mart. ex DC.) Standl. (Bignoniaceae), Mezilaurus itauba (Meisn.) Taub. ex Mez (Lauraceae) and Qualea coerulea Aubl. (Vochysiaceae). Emergency actions such as implementing management plans for already existing Conservation Units, the creation of new such units in areas of primary forest fragments (as in the case of the Amafrutas reserve), as well as the intensification of actions of surveillance and monitoring, should be undertaken by Federal, State, and Municipal environmental agencies so as to ensure the conservation of these last primary forest remnants in the metropolitan area of Belém.

Geographic location, sex and nutritional status play an important role in body image concerns among Brazilian adolescents

This study compared body image concerns among adolescents from different geographic locations in Brazil, and the influence of sex and nutritional status. Seven hundred eighty-eight adolescents completed the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and had their weight and height measured. There were significant cross-regional differences in BSQ scores. Also, body image concerns were more prevalent among girls and among overweight adolescents. It is suggested that sex and nutritional status may play an important role in body image concerns, which is more common between adolescents from urban areas. Furthermore, our findings contribute to the literature by examining patterns of body image concerns within subgroups of adolescents who have received little research attention on these issues.

Imagem corporal, ansiedade e depressão em pacientes obesos submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica

Pacientes obesos mórbidos têm recorrido à cirurgia bariátrica como um recurso eficaz para perder peso. Entretanto, este procedimento pode causar alterações comportamentais significativas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar os níveis de ansiedade e depressão, assim como as mudanças sofridas na percepção da imagem corporal em pacientes obesos submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica em três momentos: pré-operatório, 6 meses e 12 meses após a cirurgia. Trata-se de um estudo do tipo prospectivo longitudinal, de abordagem quantitativa. No estudo foram aplicados os Inventários de Depressão e Ansiedade de Beck e a Escala Brasileira de Figuras de Silhuetas para Adultos. A cirurgia diminuiu significativamente tanto o índice de massa corporal dos pacientes quanto a insatisfação com a sua imagem corporal. Essa perda de peso e diminuição da insatisfação com a imagem corporal foi acompanhada de redução nos níveis de ansiedade e depressão, o que sugere que estes são fatores importantes no quadro obesidade.

Early postnatal protein-calorie malnutrition and cognition: a review of human and animal studies

Malnutrition continues to be recognized as the most common and serious form of children's dietary disease in the developing countries and is one of the principal factors affecting brain development. The purpose of this paper is to review human and animal studies relating malnutrition to cognitive development, focusing in correlational and interventional data, and to provide a discussion of possible mechanisms by which malnutrition affects cognition.

Plasma Kallikrein and Angiotensin I-converting enzyme N- and C-terminal domain activities are modulated by the insertion/deletion polymorphism

Angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) is recognized as one of the main effector molecules involved in blood pressure regulation. In the last few years some polymorphisms of ACE such as the insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism have been described, but their physiologic relevance is poorly understood. In addition, few studies investigated if the specific activity of ACE domain is related to the I/D polymorphism and if it can affect other systems. The aim of this study was to establish a biochemical and functional characterization of the I/D polymorphism and correlate this with the corresponding ACE activity. For this purpose, 119 male brazilian army recruits were genotyped and their ACE plasma activities evaluated from the C- and N-terminal catalytic domains using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) peptides, specific for the C-domain (Abz-LFK(Dnp)OH), N-domain (Abz-SDK(Dnp)P-OH) and both C- and N-domains (Abz-FRK(Dnp)P-OH). Plasma kallikrein activity was measured using Z-Phe-Arg-AMC as substrate and inhibited by selective plasma kallikrein inhibitor (PKSI). Some physiological parameters previously described related to the I/D polymorphism such as handgrip strength, blood pressure, heart rate and BMI were also evaluated. The genotype distribution was II n=27, ID n=64 and DD n=28. Total plasma ACE activity of both domains in II individuals was significantly lower in comparison to ID and DD. This pattern was also observed for C- and N-domain activities. Difference between ID and DD subjects was observed only with the N-domain specific substrate. Blood pressure, heart rate, handgrip strength and BMI were similar among the genotypes. This polymorphism also affected the plasma kallikrein activity and DD group presents high activity level. Thus, our data demonstrate that the I/D ACE polymorphism affects differently both ACE domains without effects on handgrip strength. Moreover, this polymorphism influences the kallikrein-kinin system of normotensive individuals.

Construção e fidedignidade teste-reteste de escalas de silhuetas brasileiras para adultos e crianças

O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver escalas de silhuetas para crianças e adultos brasileiros de ambos os sexos e iniciar a avaliação de suas qualidades psicométricas. Foram fotografados adultos e crianças com Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC) previamente conhecidos, desenhadas as silhuetas e construídas as escalas por computação gráfica. Para avaliação da fidedignidade, procedeu-se ao teste-reteste com intervalo de um mês. As escalas foram aplicadas e reaplicadas a 90 adultos (18 a 60 anos) e 69 crianças (7 a 12 anos). As escalas apresentaram coeficientes de correlação entre teste e reteste positivos e significativos para o IMC real e IMC percebido como atual por adultos (r=0,84; p<0,01) e crianças (r=0,61, p<0,01). Concluiu-se que as escalas desenvolvidas constituem instrumentos apropriados à aplicação clínica e epidemiológica para avaliar a percepção da imagem corporal de crianças e adultos brasileiros.

Effects of early protein malnutrition and scopolamine on learning and memory in the Morris water maze

The present study investigated the effects of early protein malnutrition on the spatial learning and memory processes. The consequences of malnutrition for the cholinergic system were evaluated by comparing the performance of malnourished and control animals in the Morris water maze after treatment with scopolamine. The learning test consisted of placing the animal in the maze to escape to a submerged platform with 12 trials per day for two consecutive days. After 24 trials, the platform was removed, the rats were placed in the maze and the time spent by them in each quadrant was recorded. After 28 days the animals were tested in a single trial to verify the retention of the spatial information. In the first Experiment, scopolamine (0.0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 mg/kg per ml. i.p.) was administered 20 min before the experimental sessions. In the second experiment, a dose of 0.6 mg/kg was administered after the sessions, during the period in which learning consolidation occurs. In the first experiment, there was a significant effect of the drug, with scopolamine impairing, learning in both nutritional conditions. In the saline condition, control animals presented a better performance when compared with malnourished animals. However, 28 days later, both groups increased their latencies. With 0.2 and 0.4 mg/kg of scopolamine, the performance of both nutritional groups was similar and with 0.6 mg/kg malnourished animals performed better than controls. In the second experiment, malnourished animals were also less reactive to the effects of scopolamine, resulting in lower impairments as compared to control animals. These data suggest long-term changes in learning and memory as the result of changes produced by protein malnutrition in the cholinergic neurotransmitter system.
