Abstract
The development of environmentally friendly multifunctional auxiliaries for textile modification is the focus of attention in textile industry in recent years. Polydopamine is an important biological macromolecule and widely used in biomedicine, nanomaterials, material surface modification and other fields. In this study, the novel multifunctional melanin-like nanoparticles (Nha-PDA NPs) were prepared and used for antibacterial, hydrophobic, and UV protective of textiles. Nha-PDA NPs were prepared with dopamine (DA) and n-hexylamine (Nha) by simple autoxidation copolymerization. Nha-PDA NPs were bound to the fabric surface through the PDA structure in Nha-PDA NPs that has been widely confirmed to have strong adhesion on the surface of many materials. The modified fabrics, Nha-PDA NPs@Cotton, had good hydrophobic, antibacterial and UV protective properties. The static water contact angles of the modified fabrics could reach 120°. The antibacterial rates of Nha-PDA NPs@Cotton against E. coli and S. aureus were above 85 %. The maximum UPF value of the modified cotton was 362, indicating that the ultraviolet protection performance was excellent. The fabric modified with multifunctional melanin-like nanoparticle provides a green way for the multifunctional modification of textiles.

Phenotype of Takayasu-like vasculitis and cardiopathy in patients with Blau syndrome. Clin Rheumatol 2024; 43:1171-1181. [PMID: 38253779 DOI: 10.1007/s10067-024-06876-w] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/10/2023] [Revised: 12/24/2023] [Accepted: 01/16/2024] [Indexed: 01/24/2024]
Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular involvement in our Blau syndrome (BS) cohort and provide detailed analysis of their cardiovascular manifestations and outcome. We also tried to find out the risk factors for developing cardiovascular involvement. METHODS Clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, and treatments were reviewed. Clinical features were compared between children with cardiovascular involvement and those without angiocardiopathy. RESULTS A total of 38 BS children were eligible for final analysis. Among them, 13 (34.2%) developed Takayasu-like vasculitis and/or cardiopathy. Compared with those without angiocardiopathy, recurrent fever was more frequent in BS patients with cardiovascular involvement (p < 0.001). What is more, tumor necrosis factor alpha antagonists (anti-TNF) were more urgently needed in children with cardiovascular involvement (p = 0.015). BS patients with cardiovascular involvement include 4 with Takayasu-like vasculitis and 9 with cardiopathy. The onset of cardiovascular manifestations ranged from 0.75 to 18.5 years of age, with most cases occurring before school period. Symptoms were elusive and lacked specificity, such as dizziness, short of breath, and edema. Some patients were even identified because of the unexpected hypertension during follow-up. Cardiopathy and vasculitis occurred in patients with different genotypes. Imaging changes were discovered before the presentation of the typical triad in 3/4 patients with Takayasu-like vasculitis. Three children developed left ventricular dysfunction with decreased left ventricular ejection fraction. Combination of glucocorticoids and methotrexate with anti-TNF agents is a common treatment option for these BS patients. In the cohort, BS-related cardiovascular involvement was controlled well, with cardiac structural and functional abnormalities completely recovered and slower progression of vasculitis lesions. CONCLUSION Cardiovascular manifestations is not rare in BS patients. Because of its insidious onset, a systematic and comprehensive assessment of cardiovascular involvement should be performed in newly diagnosed patients with BS. Aggressive initiation of anti-TNF agents may be beneficial to improve the prognosis. Key Points • About 34.2% patients with Blau syndrome developed Takayasu-like vasculitis and/or cardiopathy. • Compared with those without angiocardiopathy, recurrent fever and application of anti-TNF agents were more frequent in BS patients with cardiovascular involvement (p < 0.001, p = 0.015) • Regular assessment of cardiovascular involvement is extremely necessary because of its insidious onset.

Abstract
Pyrin, a protein encoded by the MEFV gene, plays a vital role in innate immunity by sensing modifications in Rho GTPase and assembling the pyrin inflammasome, which in turn activates downstream immune responses. We identified a novel and de novo MEFV p.E583A dominant variant in 3 patients from the same family; the variant was distinct from the previously reported S242 and E244 sites. These patients exhibited a phenotype that diverged from those resulting from classical MEFV gene mutations, characterized by the absence of recurrent fever but the presence of recurrent chest and abdominal pain. Colchicine effectively controlled the phenotype, and the mutation was found to induce pyrin inflammasome assembly and activation in patients' peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and cell lines. Mechanistically, truncation experiments revealed that the E583A variant affected the autoinhibitory structure of pyrin. Our study offers insights into the mechanisms underlying pyrin inflammasome activation.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the short-time efficacy of empagliflozin in the treatment of glycogen storage disease type Ⅰb (GSD Ⅰb). Methods: In this prospective open-label single-arm study, the data of 4 patients were collected from the pediatric department in Peking Union Medical College Hospital from December 2020 to December 2022. All of them were diagnosed by gene sequencing and had neutropenia. These patients received empagliflozin treatment. Their clinical symptoms such as height and weight increase, abdominal pain, diarrhea, oral ulcer, infection times, and drug applications were recorded at 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, and 15 months after treatment to assess the therapeutic effect. The liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was used to monitor the changes in 1, 5-anhydroglucitol (1, 5AG) concentration in plasma. At the same time, adverse reactions such as hypoglycemia and urinary tract infection were closely followed up and monitored. Results: The 4 patients with GSD Ⅰb were 15, 14, 4 and 14 years old, respectively at the beginning of empagliflozin treatment, and were followed up for 15, 15, 12 and 6 months, respectively. Maintenance dose range of empagliflozin was 0.24-0.39 mg/(kg·d). The frequency of diarrhea and abdominal pain decreased in cases 2, 3, and 4 at 1, 2 and 3 months of treatment, respectively. Their height and weight increased at different degrees. The absolute count of neutrophils increased from 0.84×109, 0.50×109, 0.48×109, 0.48×109/L to 1.48×109, 3.04×109, 1.10×109, 0.73×109/L, respectively. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor was gradually reduced in 1 patients and stopped in 3 patient. Plasma 1, 5 AG levels in 2 children were significantly decreased after administration of empagliflozin (from 46.3 mg/L to 9.6 mg/L in case 2, and from 56.1 mg/L to 15.0 mg/L in case 3). All 4 patients had no adverse reactions such as hypoglycemia, abnormal liver or kidney function, or urinary system infection. Conclusion: In short-term observation, empagliflozin can improve the symptoms of GSD Ⅰb oral ulcers, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and recurrent infection, also can alleviate neutropenia and decrease 1, 5AG concentration in plasma, with favorable safety.

Clinical phenotypes and prognosis of cytomegalovirus infection in the pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus: a longitudinal analysis. Pediatr Rheumatol Online J 2023; 21:25. [PMID: 36927380 PMCID: PMC10022138 DOI: 10.1186/s12969-023-00807-w] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/08/2022] [Accepted: 03/10/2023] [Indexed: 03/18/2023] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND Cytomegalovirus (CMV) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, it is not clear whether the anti-CMV treatment has an impact on the prognosis of SLE patients with CMV infection. We aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics and prognosis of CMV infection in pediatric SLE (pSLE) and to evaluate the effect of anti-CMV treatment on pSLE outcome. METHODS A retrospective study including 146 pSLE from 2012 to 2021 was conducted. CMV-positive and CMV-negative groups were compared by univariate analysis and stepwise logistic multiple regression to analyze the clinical characteristics of CMV infection in pSLE. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to model the longitudinal dynamics of pSLE disease activity with or without CMV infection and anti-CMV treatment. RESULTS The CMV infection rate was 74.7% (109/146) in this pSLE cohort. CMV-positive pSLE patients were more likely to present positive anti-dsDNA antibody, hypocomplementemia, high SLEDAI-2K score and musculoskeletal involvement (P < 0.05). Survival analysis showed that CMV-positive pSLE patients were more prone to disease flare and poorer outcomes. GEE modeling indicated that CMV phosphoprotein 65 (pp65) titers were positively correlated with SLEDAI-2K, and anti-CMV treatment could better reduce pSLE activity than non-treatment (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS CMV infection is highly prevalent among pSLE patients. Positive anti-dsDNA antibody, hypocomplementemia, high SLEDAI-2K score and musculoskeletal involvement were significant clinical clues indicating CMV infections in pSLE. CMV infection is correlated with higher disease activity and poorer outcome. Anti-CMV treatment can reduce disease activity and flares.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Progressive pseudorheumatoid dysplasia (PPRD) is a rare genetic disease with autosomal recessive inheritance. There was a lack of genotype-phenotype correlation data from the Chinese population. This study aimed to identify the genotype and phenotype characteristics of Chinese PPRD patients and to conduct a genotype-phenotype analysis of Chinese PPRD patients. METHODS Genetic analysis was performed for suspected PPRD patients from Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Medical records were collected from the electronic medical record system and patient-held portable health records. Published Chinese PPRD cases were gathered from both international and Chinese local databases. We collected demographic information, genetic variants, clinical manifestations, and imaging characteristics for further analysis. RESULTS We included 105 Chinese PPRD patients in the current study. Thirty-three variants, including nine novels and five hotspot variants, were identified, with 26/33 (79%) variants exclusively seen in the Chinese population. Chinese PPRD patients share a phenotype similar to that in international reports. Joint involvement may progress with age (R2 = 0.2541). Long bone shortening and severe deformities occur in three patients with biallelic null variants, of which at least one variant is located in exon 2. Among hotspot variants, c.624dupA (p.C209Mfs*21) were associated with later onset and more involved joints. Elbow joints were more likely to be affected in patients carrying c.624dupA (p.C209Mfs*21) and c.866dupA (p.S209Efs*13). Shoulder joints are more likely to be involved in patients with biallelic null variants (P = 0.027). CONCLUSIONS Chinese PPRD patients share a unique mutation spectrum. Among the five hotspot variants, c.624dupA is associated with later onset of disease, more extensive joint involvement, and a tendency to affect elbow joints. Biallelic null variants with at least one variant in exon 2 could be a likely cause of long bone shortening and severe deformities.

Abstract
Eutrophication is a global problem for coastal ecosystems, one that Bohai Bay, China, has been severely afflicted due to rapid economic and social development in the past decades. It was urgent to manage the total maximum allocated loads (TMALs) of the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) on land-based, which was closely related to coastal eutrophication. In this study, from the perspective of economy-resources-environment (ERE) system, we presented the fuzzy credibility constrained linear programming based on pressure-state-response (PSR-FCCLP) model, which calculated the TMALs of TN and TP at three credibility levels (λ = 0.55, 0.75, and 0.95) in Bohai Bay. The results showed that when the credibility level increased from 0.55 to 0.95, the TMALs of TN and TP would decrease from 13,573.38 t/a to 12,820.00 t/a and from 2665.58 t/a to 2514.90 t/a, respectively. This study will provide support for environmental management in coastal regions.

Abstract
Background Neonatal‐onset hereditary thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura (hTTP) is often misdiagnosed due to its rarity. It begins with jaundice, similar to infants with ABO incompatibility. Objective To explore early indicators of neonatal‐onset hTTP. Methods This study was a retrospective case series of newborns with hTTP and ABO incompatibility. We compared the clinical characteristics and laboratory test results in these two groups. Results This study included four hTTP patients and 20 ABO‐incompatible newborns. All patients manifested disease during the neonatal period. There were equal numbers of males and females in each group. hTTP newborns showed earlier (median difference, 57.0 h; 95% confidence interval [CI], 24.0–65.0) and more severe hyperbilirubinemia (mean difference, 8.0 mg/dl; 95% CI, 3.8–12.1) than ABO‐incompatible newborns. In hTTP newborns, anemia was more common within 7 days after birth than in ABO‐incompatible newborns (odds ratio, 25.4; 95% CI, 1.2–551.6), and platelet counts were lower than in ABO‐incompatible newborns (17 ± 12 × 109/L vs. 291 ± 76 × 109/L). The levels of serum creatinine (median difference, 51.8 μmol/L; 95% CI, 16.0–109.4) and blood urea nitrogen (median difference, 5.7 mmol/L; 95% CI, 2.8–38.7) were higher in hTTP newborns than in ABO‐incompatible newborns. There were no significant differences in white blood cell counts, C‐reactive protein, alanine aminotransferase, or albumin levels. Conclusions Severe jaundice soon after birth, early anemia, and severe thrombocytopenia were more common in newborns with hTTP than ABO incompatibility. These are distinguishing early features of hTTP.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the treatment of children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). METHODS We retrospectively collected and compared the data of patients with CDH admitted between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021(study group) with the CDH patients admitted before the pandemic between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2019 (control group). RESULTS During the pandemic, 41 patients with CDH diagnosed prenatally were transferred to our hospital, and 40 underwent surgical repair. The number of patients treated in our hospital increased by 24.2% compared with the 33 patients before the pandemic. During the pandemic, the overall survival rate, postoperative survival rate and recurrence rate were 85.4%, 87.5% and 7.3%, respectively, and there were no significant differences compared with the control group (75.8%, 83.3% and 9.1%, respectively). The average length of hospital stay in patients admitted during the pandemic was longer than that in the control group (31 days vs. 16 days, P < 0.001), and the incidence of nosocomial infection was higher than that in the control group (19.5% vs. 3%, P = 0.037). CONCLUSIONS CDH patients confirmed to be SARS-CoV-2 infection-free can receive routine treatment. Our data indicate that the implementation of protective measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with appropriate screening and case evaluation, do not have a negative impact on the prognosis of children.

Abstract
We report a precise measurement of the parity-violating (PV) asymmetry A_{PV} in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from ^{48}Ca. We measure A_{PV}=2668±106(stat)±40(syst) parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor F_{W}(q=0.8733 fm^{-1})=0.1304±0.0052(stat)±0.0020(syst) and the charge minus the weak form factor F_{ch}-F_{W}=0.0277±0.0055. The resulting neutron skin thickness R_{n}-R_{p}=0.121±0.026(exp)±0.024(model) fm is relatively thin yet consistent with many model calculations. The combined CREX and PREX results will have implications for future energy density functional calculations and on the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter.

Abstract
ObjectivePrevious studies have shown that ex utero intrapartum therapy (EXIT) is safe and feasible for newborns with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). This study reports our experience with EXIT in fetuses with CDH in an attempt to explore the efficacy of EXIT on the survival rate of this population.MethodsA retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 116 children with CDH was conducted. The children were assigned to EXIT and non-EXIT groups. Propensity score matching (PSM) toward clinical data was performed, and the clinical characteristics and outcomes were compared. Taking survival at discharge as the main outcome, logistic regression analysis was carried out to explore the efficacy of EXIT on survival.ResultsDuring the study period, 30 of 116 children received EXIT. After PSM, the survival rates of the EXIT group and the non-EXIT group were 82.76% (24/29) and 48.28% (14/29), respectively (p=0.006). EXIT (OR=0.083, 95% CI=0.013to 0.525, p=0.008), liver herniation (OR=16.955, 95% CI=2.342 to 122.767, p=0.005), and gestational age at diagnosis (OR=0.662, 95% CI=0.497 to 0.881, p=0.005) were independent mortality-related risk factors of all children with CDH. Ninety-nine of 116 children underwent surgery. After PSM, the postoperative survival rates of the EXIT group and non-EXIT group were 84.6% (22/26) and 76.9% (20/26), respectively (p=0.754). Liver herniation (OR=10.451, 95% CI=1.641 to 66.544, p=0.013) and gestational age at diagnosis (OR=0.736, 95% CI=0.577 to 0.938, p=0.013) were independent mortality-related risk factors of children after surgery.ConclusionEXIT can be performed safely for selected prenatally diagnosed CDH neonates with potentially better survival and does not cause more maternal complications compared with traditional cesarean section.

Objective This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of 2 Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors (jakinibs) tofacitinib and ruxolitinib in the treatment of type I interferonopathies patients including STING-associated vasculopathy with onset in infancy (SAVI), Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS), and spondyloenchondrodysplasia with immune dysregulation (SPENCD). Methods A total of 6 patients were considered in this study: 2 patients with SAVI, 1 patient with AGS1, 1 patient with AGS7, and 2 patients with SPENCD. Clinical manifestations, laboratory investigations, radiology examinations, treatment, and outcomes were collected between November 2017 and November 2021 in Peking Union Medical College Hospital. The disease score for patients with SAVI and AGS scale for patients with AGS were documented. The expression of 6 interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) was assessed by real-time PCR. Results Three patients (1 patient with SAVI, 2 patients with AGS) were treated with ruxolitinib and 3 patients (1 patient with SAVI, 2 patients with SPENCD) were treated with tofacitinib. The mean duration of the treatment was 2.5 years (1.25-4 years). Upon treatment, cutaneous lesions and febrile attacks subsided in all affected patients. Two patients discontinued the corticoid treatment. Two patients with SAVI showed an improvement in the disease scores (p < 0.05). The erythrocyte sedimentation rate normalized in 2 patients with AGS. The interferon score (IS) was remarkably decreased in 2 patients with SPENCD (p < 0.01). Catch-ups with growth and weight gain were observed in 3 and 2 patients, respectively. Lung lesions improved in 1 patient with SAVI and remained stable in 3 patients. Lymphopenia was found in 3 patients during the treatment without severe infections. Conclusion The JAK inhibitors baricitinib and tofacitinib are promising therapeutic agents for patients with SAVI, AGS, and SPENCD, especially for the improvement of cutaneous lesions and febrile attacks. However, further cohort studies are needed to assess the efficacy and safety.

Abstract
We report precision determinations of the beam-normal single spin asymmetries (A_{n}) in the elastic scattering of 0.95 and 2.18 GeV electrons off ^{12}C, ^{40}Ca, ^{48}Ca, and ^{208}Pb at very forward angles where the most detailed theoretical calculations have been performed. The first measurements of A_{n} for ^{40}Ca and ^{48}Ca are found to be similar to that of ^{12}C, consistent with expectations and thus demonstrating the validity of theoretical calculations for nuclei with Z≤20. We also report A_{n} for ^{208}Pb at two new momentum transfers (Q^{2}) extending the previous measurement. Our new data confirm the surprising result previously reported, with all three data points showing significant disagreement with the results from the Z≤20 nuclei. These data confirm our basic understanding of the underlying dynamics that govern A_{n} for nuclei containing ≲50 nucleons, but point to the need for further investigation to understand the unusual A_{n} behavior discovered for scattering off ^{208}Pb.

Abstract
The ratio of the nucleon F_{2} structure functions, F_{2}^{n}/F_{2}^{p}, is determined by the MARATHON experiment from measurements of deep inelastic scattering of electrons from ^{3}H and ^{3}He nuclei. The experiment was performed in the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Lab using two high-resolution spectrometers for electron detection, and a cryogenic target system which included a low-activity tritium cell. The data analysis used a novel technique exploiting the mirror symmetry of the two nuclei, which essentially eliminates many theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of the ratio. The results, which cover the Bjorken scaling variable range 0.19<x<0.83, represent a significant improvement compared to previous SLAC and Jefferson Lab measurements for the ratio. They are compared to recent theoretical calculations and empirical determinations of the F_{2}^{n}/F_{2}^{p} ratio.

New Estimation of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Sediment Along the Haihe River and Bohai Bay in China: A Comparison Between Single and Successive DNA Extraction Methods. Abstract
Sediment is thought to be a vital reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Often, studies describing and comparing ARGs and their potential hosts in sediment are based on single DNA extractions. To date, however, no study has been conducted to assess the influence of DNA extraction efficiency on ARGs in sediment. To determine whether the abundance of ARGs is underestimated, we performed five successive extraction cycles with a widely used commercial kit in 10 sediment samples collected from the Haihe River and Bohai Bay. Our results showed that accumulated DNA yields after five extractions were 1.8–3.1 times higher than that by single DNA extractions. High-throughput sequencing showed that insufficient DNA extraction could generate PCR bias and skew community structure characterization in sediment. The relative abundances of some pathogenic bacteria, such as Enterobacteriales, Lactobacillales, and Streptomycetales, were significantly different between single and successive DNA extraction samples. In addition, real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (qPCR) showed that ARGs, intI1, and 16S rRNA gene abundance strongly increased with increasing extraction cycles. Among the measured ARGs, sulfonamide resistance genes and multidrug resistance genes were dominant subtypes in the study region. Nevertheless, different subtypes of ARGs did not respond equally to the additional extraction cycles; some continued to have linear growth trends, and some tended to level off. Additionally, more correlations between ARGs and bacterial communities were observed in the successive DNA extraction samples than in the single DNA extraction samples. It is suggested that 3–4 additional extraction cycles are required in future studies when extracting DNA from sediment samples. Taken together, our results highlight that performing successive DNA extractions on sediment samples optimizes the extractable DNA yield and can lead to a better picture of the abundance of ARGs and their potential hosts in sediments.

Abstract
Kidney disease is manifested in a wide variety of phenotypes, many of which have an important hereditary component. To delineate the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum of pediatric nephropathy, a multicenter registration system is being implemented based on the Chinese Children Genetic Kidney Disease Database (CCGKDD). In this study, all the patients with kidney and urological diseases were recruited from 2014 to 2020. Genetic analysis was conducted using exome sequencing for families with multiple affected individuals with nephropathy or clinical suspicion of a genetic kidney disease owing to early-onset or extrarenal features. The genetic diagnosis was confirmed in 883 of 2256 (39.1%) patients from 23 provinces in China. Phenotypic profiles showed that the primary diagnosis included steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS, 23.5%), glomerulonephritis (GN, 32.2%), congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT, 21.2%), cystic renal disease (3.9%), renal calcinosis/stone (3.6%), tubulopathy (9.7%), and chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu, 5.8%). The pathogenic variants of 105 monogenetic disorders were identified. Ten distinct genomic disorders were identified as pathogenic copy number variants (CNVs) in 11 patients. The diagnostic yield differed by subgroups, and was highest in those with cystic renal disease (66.3%), followed by tubulopathy (58.4%), GN (57.7%), CKDu (43.5%), SRNS (29.2%), renal calcinosis /stone (29.3%) and CAKUT (8.6%). Reverse phenotyping permitted correct identification in 40 cases with clinical reassessment and unexpected genetic conditions. We present the results of the largest cohort of children with kidney disease in China where diagnostic exome sequencing was performed. Our data demonstrate the utility of family-based exome sequencing, and indicate that the combined analysis of genotype and phenotype based on the national patient registry is pivotal to the genetic diagnosis of kidney disease. Abstract
We report a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A_{PV} in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from ^{208}Pb. We measure A_{PV}=550±16(stat)±8(syst) parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor F_{W}(Q^{2}=0.00616 GeV^{2})=0.368±0.013. Combined with our previous measurement, the extracted neutron skin thickness is R_{n}-R_{p}=0.283±0.071 fm. The result also yields the first significant direct measurement of the interior weak density of ^{208}Pb: ρ_{W}^{0}=-0.0796±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo) fm^{-3} leading to the interior baryon density ρ_{b}^{0}=0.1480±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo) fm^{-3}. The measurement accurately constrains the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter near saturation density, with implications for the size and composition of neutron stars.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nephronophthisis-related ciliopathies (NPHP-RC) account for the majority of cases of monogenetically caused end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in children. Exploring the correlation between the phenotype and genotype of NPHP-RC is helpful for early diagnosis and management. We investigated the phenotype and genotype spectra of NPHP-RC in a Chinese multicentre cohort. METHODS Crosss-ectional and longitudinal data of 60 patients from 57 families with pathogenic NPHP-RC gene mutations distributed in 22 regions of China were collected into a unified, anonymous database. The mean observation time of this cohort was 3.5±3.1 years. RESULTS Mutations in NPHP1 and NPHP3 were the most common genetic defects. Overall, 45% of patients presented with isolated nephronophthisis (NPH), and 55% exhibited the extrarenal phenotype, which frequently involved the liver (41.7%, n=25), central nervous system (26.7%, n=16), eyes (26.7%, n=16) and skeletal system (11.7%, n=7). Accidental detection of elevated serum creatinine and non-specific symptoms caused by chronic kidney disease occurred in 65% of patients. Patients carrying NPHP1 mutations mainly presented with isolated NPH (90%, 18/20) and progressed to ESRD at a mean age of 12.9±0.5 years. The mean age of ESRD onset in the non-NPHP1 group was lower than that in the NPHP1 group (6.2±1.4 years, p<0.001), especially for patients carrying NPHP3 mutations (3.1±1.2 years), showing a heterogeneous phenotype characterised by Bardet-Biedl syndrome (12.5%, n=5), Joubert syndrome (7.5%, n=3), COACH syndrome (2.5%, n=1), Mainzer-Saldino syndrome (2.5%, n=1), short-rib thoracic dysplasia (2.5%, n=1) and unclassified symptoms (32.5%, n=13). CONCLUSIONS The Chinese Children Genetic Kidney Disease Database registry characterised the spectrum of the phenotype and genotype of NPHP-RC in the Chinese population. NPHP1 and NPHP3 were the most common pathogenic genes. Rapid progression to ESRD and liver involvement were noted in patients with NPHP3 mutations.

Abstract
Biogenic dimethyl sulfide (DMS) has attracted widespread attention over several decades due to its potential role in linking ocean biology and climate. The air-to-sea exchange flux, estimated based on marine DMS concentration, offers useful information for evaluating its contribution to climate change. As such, field observation techniques with the characteristics of fast testing speed, portability and easy operation are in demand to accurately monitor the DMS in seawater. In this paper, we proposed a new strategy for the sensitive field measurement of DMS in seawater based on benzene-assisted photoionization positive ion mobility spectrometry (BAPI-PIMS) coupled with a time-resolved introduction. Benzene was employed as a dopant to improve the selectivity by keeping the other sulfur compounds from being ionized, while the two-dimensional data versus drift time and retention time were obtained via an online separating column to eliminate the adverse impact of environmental moisture. Under the optimization conditions, the LODs (S/N = 3) for two product-ion peaks (PIPs) of DMS decreased to 0.081 nmol L-1. Finally, the established method was applied to the lab and ship-board analysis of seawater from the Bohai Sea and the North Yellow Sea in the summer of 2019, and DMS in surface seawater was in the range of 0.11-23.90 nmol L-1 with an average of 9.88 ± 6.96 nmol L-1, indicating the potential for the field detection of marine DMS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor protein 12 (NLRP12)-autoinflammatory disorder (NLRP12-AD) is a rare autoinflammatory disease characterized by recurrent fever, rash as well as musculoskeletal symptoms, which is rarely reported in Asian populations. METHODS Three cases of NLRP12-AD presented to our hospital were studied after parental consents were obtained. Clinical presentations were recorded on a standardized case report form. Mutations of NLRP12 were detected by primary immunodeficiency disease panels and further examined by Sanger sequencing. PubMed literature search for relevant studies of systemic autoinflammatory disorders, especially NLRP12-AD between January, 2000 and January, 2019 was carried and the clinical data were summarized. Comparisons were made between groups in terms of onset age and of ethnicity. RESULTS All our patients presented with fever, rash and arthritis/arthralgia, and sensorineural as well as sensorineural deafness (1/3), uveitis (1/3), abdominal pain (1/3), and myalgia (1/3). Two novel mutation variations, p.W581X and p.L558R, are reported here. In addition, we also found that two patients inherited the mutated alleles from their healthy parents, and this may be evidence of haploinsufficiency. CONCLUSIONS Although the genotypes are similar, the clinical manifestations between Chinese patients and Western patients vary thus highlighting the possible influence of ethnic and environmental factors. On the other hand, some genetic mutations may lead to specific phenotype, as we have found a high prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss among p.R284X patients.

Abstract
Bartter syndrome is a rare inherited disease caused by CLCNKB mutation, which results in inactivation of the chloride channel Kb protein. Bartter syndrome is characterized by extreme hypokalemia, hypochloremia, metabolic alkalosis, hyperrenin-induced angiotensinemia, hyperaldosteronemia, and normal blood pressure. We herein report a case of Bartter syndrome that manifested as vomiting, hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, normal blood pressure, and significant hyperrenin-induced angiotensinemia. The patient, a 5-month-old girl, carried two known heterozygous pathogenic mutations: c.88C > T (p.Arg30*), which she had inherited from her father, and c.1313G > A (p.Arg438His), which she had inherited from her mother. Treatment with indomethacin, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, led to rapid improvement of the hypokalemia, and treatment was continued for 14 years. The indomethacin also induced a sustainable reduction in the hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis.

Probing Few-Body Nuclear Dynamics via ^{3}H and ^{3}He (e,e^{'}p)pn Cross-Section Measurements. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2020; 124:212501. Abstract
We report the first measurement of the (e,e^{'}p) three-body breakup reaction cross sections in helium-3 (^{3}He) and tritium (^{3}H) at large momentum transfer [⟨Q^{2}⟩≈1.9 (GeV/c)^{2}] and x_{B}>1 kinematics, where the cross section should be sensitive to quasielastic (QE) scattering from single nucleons. The data cover missing momenta 40≤p_{miss}≤500 MeV/c that, in the QE limit with no rescattering, equals the initial momentum of the probed nucleon. The measured cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. Overall good agreement, within ±20%, is observed between data and calculations for the full p_{miss} range for ^{3}H and for 100≤p_{miss}≤350 MeV/c for ^{3}He. Including the effects of rescattering of the outgoing nucleon improves agreement with the data at p_{miss}>250 MeV/c and suggests contributions from charge-exchange (SCX) rescattering. The isoscalar sum of ^{3}He plus ^{3}H, which is largely insensitive to SCX, is described by calculations to within the accuracy of the data over the entire p_{miss} range. This validates current models of the ground state of the three-nucleon system up to very high initial nucleon momenta of 500 MeV/c.

Abstract
Selective immunoglobulin A deficiency (SIgAD) is considered to be the most common human primary immune-deficiency disease in the world. However, the incidence in China is obviously lower than Caucasian races. The definition of SIgAD has changed over time with the progress of people's understanding. The scientific community did not reach a consensus on the definition until 1999. As a result, many previously reported cases need to be excluded under the current definition. SIgAD can lead to several spectra of diseases including infections and autoimmune diseases. We retrospectively summarized the SIgAD patients in Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), and summarized the Chinese SIgAD reported in China and abroad in past 40 years. Fourty three SIgAD patients were confirmed in the study, in which 9 were healthy without clinical symptoms. Of the 34 patients with clinical symptoms, recurrent infections were found in 29 (85.3%) patients; 13 (38.2%) patients were with autoimmune diseases; 6 (17.6%)cases had allergic symptoms; 3 patients (8.8%) were with tumors, only one case (2.9%) had a family history. Compared with other countries, sIgAD patients in China showed similar symptoms, but the rate of recurrent infections and autoimmune diseases were higher than some other countries; most of the allergic symptoms are drug allergy, different with the allergic sequelae reported in other countries, such as asthma, rhinitis, food allergy and atopic dermatitis; and it is rare to have family history in Chinese patients. We also figured out that more female SIgAD patients tend to have more autoimmune diseases than men (P = 0.039).

Abstract
Dent disease is a rare X-linked recessive inherited tubular disease. In this multicenter study, the clinical presentation and genetic background of Chinese children with Dent disease are studied to improve the cognition and diagnostic ability of pediatricians. In this prospective cohort, we described the genotype and phenotype of a national cohort composed of 45 pediatric probands with Dent disease belonging to 45 families from 12 different regions of China recruited from 2014 to 2018 by building up the multicenter registration system. The CLCN5 gene from 32 affected families revealed 28 different mutations. The OCRL gene from 13 affected families revealed 13 different mutations. The incidence of low-molecular-weight proteinuria (LMWP) in both Dent disease type 1 populations and Dent disease type 2 populations was 100.0%; however, the incidence of other manifestations was not high, which was similar to previously reported data. Therefore, LMWP is a key clinical feature that should alert clinicians to the possibility of Dent disease. A high amount of LMWP combined with positive gene test results can be used as the diagnostic criteria for this disease. The diagnostic criteria are helpful in reducing the missed diagnosis of this disease and are beneficial for protecting the renal function of these patients through early diagnosis and early intervention.

Abstract
Nephronophthisis (NPHP) is a group of autosomal recessive tubulointerstitial cystic kidney disorders. This article reports a case of NPHP type 12 caused by TTC21B mutations. The girl had an insidious onset, with moderate proteinuria, renal dysfunction, stage 2 hypertension, situs inversus, and short phalanges when she visited the hospital for the first time at the age of 3 years and 6 months. The renal lesions progressed to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) before she was 4 years old. Urine protein electrophoresis showed glomerular proteinuria. There were significant increases in urinary β2-microglobulin and α1-microglobulin. Gene detection revealed two compound heterozygous mutations, c.1552T>C (p.C518R) and c.752T>G (p.M251R), in the TTC21B gene, which came from her father and mother respectively. The c.752T>G mutation was a novel mutation. It is concluded that besides typical tubular changes of NPHP, marked glomerular damage is also observed in patients with TTC21B gene mutations.

Enhanced Generation of Non-Oxygen Dependent Free Radicals by Schottky-type Heterostructures of Au-Bi 2S 3 Nanoparticles via X-ray-Induced Catalytic Reaction for Radiosensitization. Abstract
Despite the development of nanomaterials with high-Z elements for radiosensitizers, most of them suffer from their oxygen-dependent behavior in hypoxic tumor, nonideal selectivity to tumor, or inevasible damages to normal tissue, greatly limiting their further applications. Herein, we develop a Schottky-type heterostructure of Au-Bi2S3 with promising ability of reactive free radicals generation under X-ray irradiation for selectively enhancing radiotherapeutic efficacy by catalyzing intracellular H2O2 in tumor. On the one hand, like many other nanomaterials with rich high-Z elements, Au-Bi2S3 can deposit higher radiation dose within tumors in the form of high energy electrons. On the other hand, Au-Bi2S3 can remarkably improve the utilization of a large number of X-ray-induced low energy electrons during radiotherapy for nonoxygen dependent free radicals generation even in hypoxic condition. This feature of Schottky-type heterostructures Au-Bi2S3 attributes to the generated Schottky barrier between metal Au and semiconductor Bi2S3, which can trap the X-ray-generated electrons and transfer them to Au, resulting in efficient separation of the electron-hole pairs. Then, because of the matched potential between the conduction band of Bi2S3 and overexpressed H2O2 within tumor, the Au-Bi2S3 HNSCs can decompose the intracellular H2O2 into highly toxic •OH for selective radiosensitization in tumor. As a consequence, this kind of nanoparticle provides an idea to develop rational designed Schottky-type heterostructures as efficient radiosensitizers for enhanced radiotherapy of cancer.

Clinical features and prognosis of patients with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura associated with systemic lupus erythematosus: a review of 25 cases. Ital J Pediatr 2019; 45:55. [PMID: 31036039 PMCID: PMC6489191 DOI: 10.1186/s13052-019-0641-y] [Citation(s) in RCA: 16] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.2] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/21/2018] [Accepted: 03/29/2019] [Indexed: 02/06/2023] Open
Abstract
Objective To report the clinical features of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) associated with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Their diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis were also discussed. Methods A total of 25 TTP-SLE pediatric patients were included in this study. Their clinical symptoms, laboratory findings, disease activity, and renal biopsy were retrospectively reviewed. Results The median age of the patient cohort was 14 years old. Nine patients were first diagnosed with SLE, followed by the diagnosis of TTP-SLE, whereas 15 patients were diagnosed with TTP and SLE concurrently. All the 25 TTP-SLE patients had decreased platelet count and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. Fever, rash, edema and neurological symptoms were the main clinical symptoms. Fragmentation of erythrocytes on blood smear and increased LDH were found in all patients. Nineteen patients (76%) had impaired renal function. Renal biopsy showed that most of the patients had lupus nephritis class IV (20%) and TMA (20%). 13 patients (52%) were treated with glucocorticoids in combination with immunosuppressive agent, and 10 patients (40%) were treated with plasma exchange combined with glucocorticoids plus immunosuppressive agent. One patient died due to lung infection; others had disease remission. Fifteen patients had follow-up regularly, and their conditions were stable. Conclusion Patients with TTP-SLE often had moderate to severe lupus disease activity. Testing of LDH level and blood smear should be performed when kidney and neurological symptoms arise in children with SLE. The use of combination therapy, glucocorticoids plus immunosuppressive agent, provided satisfactory clinical outcome. Patients with refractory TTP-SLE will also need plasma exchange therapy.

Abstract
RATIONALE Hemolymphangioma is a rare developmental defect of combined vasal and lymphatic vasculature. It is very rare that hemolymphangioma affects the bones and bladder simultaneously, and this condition has never been reported in PubMed. PATIENT CONCERNS A 12-year-old male has a history of hospitalization for recurrent episodes of chyluria of 8 years duration and progressively worsening gross hematuria with right hip pain for 6 months. DIAGNOSIS Chylous test of urine fluid was positive. There was no organic disease in the kidneys. Ga-NOTA-Evans Blue (NEB) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) images demonstrated clearly several round and strip-shaped low-density shadows with mildly increased radioactive uptake in both bladder wall and pelvis, including sacral, pubic, and ischial bones. Histopathological analysis of biopsy on pubic and ischial bones confirmed the diagnosis of hemolymphangioma. INTERVENTIONS The patient received treatment with traditional Chinese medicine. OUTCOMES At the 6-month follow-up visit, the patient's symptoms of chyluria, hematuria, and pain were all mitigated. LESSONS Hemolymphangioma is a rare benign disease. Ga-NEB PET/CT is a specific method for the lymphatic system, and it might provide more accurate and comprehensive information about the disorder of the lymphatic system compared with CT and magnetic resonance imaging. When patients suffer from suspected lesions of the lymphatic system, Ga-NEB PET/CT might be recommended.

Abstract
Background: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an inherited auto-inflammatory disorder and is extremely rare in Chinese. This study aimed to investigate the demographic, clinical, and genetic features of FMF in a series of Chinese pediatric patients. Methods: This was a retrospective case series of children with recurrent febrile or inflammatory episodes and referred to the Peking Union Medical College Hospital between 06/2013 and 06/2018. All suspected patients were genetically diagnosed and met the Tel-Hashomer criteria for FMF. Demographic, clinical, genetic, and treatment characteristics were collected. Descriptive statistics were used. Results: Eleven patients were included (seven boys and four girls). The median age at the time of disease onset was 7.1 (range, 3-12) years, while the median age at diagnosis was 10.9 (range, 6-15) years. The median delay in diagnosis was 2.1 years (range, 6 months to 6.7 years). Fever (100%, 11/11) was the most common symptom, followed by joint pain (63.6%, 7/11), rash (54.5%, 6/11), abdominal pain (36.4%, 4/11), and oral ulcers (18.2%, 2/11), without evidence of amyloidosis. C-reactive protein (81.8%, 9/11) and erythrocyte sedimentation (90.9%, 10/11) were increased during attacks. All patients harbored one to five different MEFV mutations, with E148Q and L110P being the most frequent. A novel non-synonymous mutation F636Y in exon 10 was discovered. Favorable responses to colchicine was observed in all six treated patients. Conclusion: The most common variants in our study were E148Q and L110P. F636Y may found for the first time. Colchicine led to favorable responses in all treated patients.

Abstract
The occurrence of 17 target PFAA analytes was determined in surface sediments (n = 37) of the East China Sea and potential influencing factors were examined. ΣPFAAs ranged from 0.41 ng/g dw to 3.06 ng/g dw, with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) as the most abundant perfluorocarboxylic acid and perfluoroalkyl sulfonate, respectively. PFAAs in the sediments were strongly influenced by terrigenous input. Analysis of the relationship between dynamic influence factors and PFAA concentrations showed that the characteristics of PFAA distribution were rather complex. ΣPFAA concentrations and TOC were positively correlated (p < 0.0001). Circumfluence also influenced the whole PFAA distribution and seasonal variation. In addition, correlation analysis suggested that log Koc values increased with increasing perfluoroalkyl chain length. Given the rapid economic development of eastern coastal cities of China, the environmental hazards of land source pollution cannot be ignored.

Abstract
In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the expression of special AT-rich sequence-binding protein 1 (SATB1) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and assess the correlation between its expression and the clinicopathological features and prognosis of the disease. SATB1 expression in ESCC tissue was determined by using immunohistochemical analysis, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, and western blot analysis. The relationship between SATB1 expression and clinicopathological features was examined by using the chi-squared test, and the survival rate was calculated by using the Kaplan-Meier survival curve. The correlation between the indicators and patient survival was estimated by using a Cox regression analysis. High SATB1 expression in was detected in 48.3% and 7.8% of ESCC and normal esophagus tissues (P < 0.05), respectively. SATB1 expression did not significantly correlate with clinicopathological features. The Kaplan-Meier curve indicated that patients with high SATB1 expression had significantly shorter survival than those with low SATB1 expression. In a multivariate Cox regression model, high SATB1 expression was identified as an independent prognostic factor for patients with ESCC. In conclusion, these results suggest that high SATB1 expression is predictive of poor prognosis in ESCC and may be a promising new candidate for targeted therapies for ESCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the clinical features and gene mutations of 4 Chinese children with Dent disease. METHODS The clinical and laboratory data of 4 children with Dent disease were analyzed retrospectively. Genetic testing of the 4 cases was carried out. RESULTS All of 4 cases were boys. The first impression of Cases 1-3 was Fanconi syndrome. Proteinuria was presented as the first impression in Case 4. All 4 boys presented with low-molecular weight proteinuria (LMWP) and hypercalciuria, including 3 cases with hematuria, 1 case with kidney stones, 2 cases with nephrocalcinosis, 3 cases with hypophosphatemia, and 3 cases with rickets. Mutations of the CLCN5 gene were revealed in three patients (Cases 1, 2 and 4), including exon 6-7del, c.785_787de l(p.263del Leu) and c.1039 C>T (p.Arg347Term). The first two gene mutations had never reported before. CONCLUSIONS Urine protein electrophoresis should be carried out for patients with proteinuria. Dent disease should be taken into consideration when patients with Fanconi syndrome have hypercalciuria, nephrocalcinosis or kindey stones. Genetic analyses are needed for a definite diagnosis.

Abstract
Upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) have attracted considerable attention as potential photosensitizer carriers for photodynamic therapy (PDT) in deep tissues. In this work, a new and efficient NIR photosensitizing nanoplatform for PDT based on red-emitting UCNPs is designed. The red emission band matches well with the efficient absorption bands of the widely used commercially available photosensitizers (Ps), benefiting the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from UCNPs to the attached photosensitizers and thus efficiently activating them to generate cytotoxic singlet oxygen. Three commonly used photosensitizers, including chlorine e6 (Ce6), zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and methylene blue (MB), are loaded onto the alpha-cyclodextrin-modified UCNPs to form Ps@UCNPs complexes that efficiently produce singlet oxygen to kill cancer cells under 980 nm near-infrared excitation. Moreover, two different kinds of drugs are co-loaded onto these nanoparticles: chemotherapy drug doxorubicin and PDT agent Ce6. The combinational therapy based on doxorubicin (DOX)-induced chemotherapy and Ce6-triggered PDT exhibits higher therapeutic efficacy relative to the individual means for cancer therapy in vitro.

Abstract
Reforms of the economic and research and development management systems are spreading far and wide in China in a planned manner. The creative and pragmatic spirit demonstrated by the Chinese government in these reforms has won enthusiastic support of the Chinese people and aroused keen interest of statesmen, economists, and scientists the world over. The four previously established special economic zones, the opening up of 14 coastal cities and Hainan Island to foreign investment, and the smooth settlement of the Hong Kong issue by means of "one country, two systems" have brought new splendor to China's reforms. Many people in the press regard the decision of "one country, two systems" as the most courageous and fascinating creation of the 20th century.

Abstract
High-resolution photoemission is used to study the electronic structure of the cuprate superconductor, Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta), as a function of hole doping and temperature. A kink observed in the band dispersion in the nodal line in the superconducting state is associated with coupling to a resonant mode observed in neutron scattering. From the measured real part of the self-energy it is possible to extract a coupling constant which is largest in the underdoped regime, then decreasing continuously into the overdoped regime.

Abstract
The electroreduction of allyl alcohol to form propene at the platinized platinum electrode in acidic aqueous solution has been studied using CV plots, IR, ESR, and MS spectra, and a semiempricial MO method (MOPAC7/AM1, PM3). From the determinations of charge-transfer coefficients, reaction orders and apparent activation energy for the given reaction, the detection of the intermediates such as C(3)H(5)(+), C(3)H(5)(*), and C(3)H(5)(-) species, and PM3 calculations of charge distribution and frontier orbital energies of the reaction species C(3)H(5)OH and C(3)H(5)(+), the authors suggest that in acidic aqueous solution the production of propene via reductive splitting of the C-OH bond situated in the allyl position of allyl alcohol obeys a carbonium ion-carbanion mechanism.

Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES This study compared the image quality obtained with different scanning and reconstruction parameters for electron-beam computed tomographic (CT) angiography and sought optimal methods for visualizing the coronary artery lumen. MATERIALS AND METHODS Electron-beam CT angiography with contrast material enhancement was used to image 35 branches of fresh postmortem swine coronary arteries. Different collimation widths, fields of view (FOVs), reconstruction kernels, and algorithms were employed to reconstruct the acquired raw data into CT angiographic images. Image quality was compared and analyzed. RESULTS The contrast-to-noise ratios (C/Ns) for 1.5-, 2-, and 3-mm section thickness were 28.4 +/- 15.2, 31.9 +/- 9.3, and 33.8 +/- 14.5, respectively (P < .05). The lengths of visualized coronary artery lumina were significantly longer for 1.5-mm scanning (71.6 mm +/- 4.3) than for 2-mm (58.3 mm +/- 5.5) and 3-mm scanning (59.0 mm +/- 8.0) (P < .01). The C/Ns for 12.7-, 18.0-, and 26.0-cm FOV reconstruction were 32.8 +/- 9.9, 28.9 +/- 8.2, and 27.1 +/- 8.2, respectively (not significant), and the visualized luminal lengths were 76.1 mm +/- 12.5, 71.7 mm +/- 14.6, and 65.4 mm +/- 13.1, respectively (not significant). The highest C/N (48.2 +/- 13.3) was achieved with smooth kernels and a cone-beam algorithm, and the lowest (14.7 +/- 3.4) with very sharp kernels and a normal algorithm. Cone-beam algorithm images had significantly higher C/Ns than did normal algorithm images (P < .001), and they demonstrated longer coronary artery lumina (P < .01). CONCLUSION Collimation width, FOV, reconstruction kernels, and algorithms are important in the processing of high-quality electron-beam coronary angiograms. A 1.5-mm collimation width, 12.7-cm FOV, cone-beam reconstruction algorithm, and very sharp kernels should help in obtaining the best image quality and depicting the longest segments of coronary artery lumen.

Abstract
Eight-wavelength Er-doped fiber lasers with lasing wavelength separations of ~1.6 and ~0.8 nm , respectively, have been achieved by use of overlap-written fiber Bragg gratings (OWFBG's) in the fiber lasers and by cooling of the Er-doped fiber with liquid N(2) . Our experiment shows that by utilizing the OWFBG's to select the lasing wavelengths one can achieve fiber lasers with lasing wavelengths and lasing wavelength separations that match the International Telecommunication Union channel-allocation grid well.

Abstract
Preprosthetic rehabilitation of the maxillary bone is sometimes difficult due to severe bone resorption in the posterolateral regions. The sinus lift with autogenous bony graft has given us satisfactory results since 1990 but requires a rigorous protocol before and during surgery to assure a lasting anchorage to the prosthesis. We describe morbidity and technical choices of this intervention in a series of 55 patients.
