Characteristics and key driving factors of nitrous oxide emissions from a full-scale landfill leachate treatment system

The characteristics of N2O emission from a full-scale landfill leachate treatment system were investigated by in-situ monitoring over 1.4 years and driving factors responsible for these emissions were identified by statistical analysis of multidimensional environmental variables. The results showed that the maximum N2O emission flux of 2.21 × 107 mg N·h-1 occurred in the nitrification tanks, where 98.5 % of the total N2O was released, with only 1.5 % of the total N2O emitted from the denitrification tanks. Limited oxygen in nitrification tank was responsible for N2O hotspot. The N2O emissions from the parallel lines A and B (both comprising the primary biochemical system) accounted for 52.6 % and 46.6 %, respectively, while the secondary biochemical system contributed only 0.8 % to the total emissions. Higher nitrite concentration in line A and lower nitrogen loading in the secondary biochemical system caused these discrepancies. We found that during the steady state of leachate treatment, intensive N2O emissions of 253.4-1270.5 kg N·d-1 were measured. The corresponding N2O emission factor (EF) ranged from 8.86 to 49.6 %, much higher than those of municipal wastewater treatment. But N2O EF was inconceivably as low as 0.42 % averagely after system maintenance. Influent with low salinity was the key reason, followed by the high MLSS and varying microbial community after maintenance. The dominant genus shifted from Lentimicrobium and Thauera to Norank-F-Anaerolineaceae and Unclassified-F-Rhodocyclaceae. This study underscores the significance of landfill leachate treatment in urban nitrogen management and provides valuable insights into the characteristics and driving factors of N2O emissions from such systems. The findings offer important references for greenhouse gas emission inventories and strategies for N2O control in full-scale wastewater treatment plants.

Upregulation of ESPL1 is associated with poor prognostic outcomes in endometrial cancer

BACKGROUND

Extra spindle pole bodies-like 1 (ESPL1) is known to play a crucial role in the segregation of sister chromatids during mitosis. Overexpression of ESPL1 is considered to have oncogenic effects in various human cancers. However, the specific biological function of ESPL1 in endometrial cancer (EC) remains unclear.

METHODS

The TCGA and GEO databases were utilized to assess the expression of ESPL1 in EC. Immunohistochemistry was utilized to detect separase expression in EC samples. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox regression analysis were performed to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic significance of ESPL1 in EC. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) was employed to explore the potential signaling pathway of ESPL1 in EC. Cell proliferation and colony formation ability were analyzed using CCK-8 and colony formation assay.

RESULTS

Our analysis revealed that ESPL1 is significantly upregulated in EC, and its overexpression is associated with advanced clinical characteristics and unfavourable prognostic outcomes. Suppression of ESPL1 attenuated proliferation of EC cell line.

CONCLUSION

The upregulation of ESPL1 is associated with advanced disease and poor prognosis in EC patients. These findings suggest that ESPL1 has the potential to serve as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in EC, highlighting its significance in the management of EC patients.

Suitable habitat shifts and ecological niche overlay assessments among benthic Oplegnathus species in response to climate change

Climate change has had a significant impact on many marine organisms. To investigate the effects of environmental changes on deep-water benthic fishes, we selected the genus Oplegnathus and applied species distribution modeling and ecological niche modeling. From the last glacial maximum to the present, the three Oplegnathus species (O. conwayi, O. robinsoni, and O. peaolopesi) distributed in the Cape of Good Hope region of southern Africa experienced fitness zone fluctuations of 39.9%, 13%, and 5.7%, respectively. In contrast, O. fasciatus and O. punctatus, which were primarily distributed in the western Pacific Ocean, had fitness zone fluctuations of -6.5% and 11.7%, respectively. Neither the O. insignis nor the O. woodward varied by more than 5% over the period. Under future environmental conditions, the range of variation in fitness zones for the three southern African Oplegnathus species was expected to be between -30.8% and -26.5%, while the range of variation in fitness zones for the two western Pacific stonefish species was expected to remain below 13%. In addition, the range of variation in the fitness zones of the O. insignis was projected to be between -2.3% and 7.1%, and the range of variation in the fitness zones of the O. woodward is projected to be between -5.7% and -2%. The results indicated that O. fasciatus and O. punctatus had a wide distribution and high expansion potential, while Oplegnathus species might have originated in western Pacific waters. Our results showed that benthic fishes were highly adaptable to extreme environments, such as the last glacial maximum. The high ecological niche overlap between Oplegnathus species in the same region suggested that they competed with each other. Future research could explore the impacts of environmental change on marine organisms and make conservation and management recommendations.

A20 Promoter rs5029924 Concomitant with rs2230926 and rs5029937 May Be a Prognostic Predictor for Joint Deformity or Refractory Rheumatoid Arthritis

Background

There have been several studies regarding the susceptibility of A20 gene SNPs (rs2230926 and rs5029937) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, little is known about the association between polymorphisms in the A20 promoter and RA. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of A20 promoter polymorphisms and the association between these polymorphisms and clinical significance in Chinese RA patients.

Methods

PCR and sequencing were used to identify A20 gene polymorphisms in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 123 RA cases and 31 healthy individuals.

Results

Only one SNP (rs5029924) in the A20 gene promoter was identified in RA patients and healthy individuals. 6 patients who carried heterozygous rs5029924 (3918C>T) together with heterozygous rs5029937 (11,571 G>T) and rs2230926 (12,486 T>G, Phe127Cys) suffered from joints deformity or refractory RA.

Conclusion

We reported the A20 promoter polymorphism rs5029924 in RA patients for the first time. rs5029924 concomitant with rs2230926 and rs5029937 may be a prognostic predictor for joint deformity or refractory RA.

Dual-Responsive MXene-Functionalized Wool Yarn Artificial Muscles

Fiber-based artificial muscles are promising for smart textiles capable of sensing, interacting, and adapting to environmental stimuli. However, the application of current artificial muscle-based textiles in wearable and engineering fields has largely remained a constraint due to the limited deformation, restrictive stimulation, and uncomfortable. Here, dual-responsive yarn muscles with high contractile actuation force are fabricated by incorporating a very small fraction (<1 wt.%) of Ti3C2Tx MXene/cellulose nanofibers (CNF) composites into self-plied and twisted wool yarns. They can lift and lower a load exceeding 3400 times their own weight when stimulated by moisture and photothermal. Furthermore, the yarn muscles are coiled homochirally or heterochirally to produce spring-like muscles, which generated over 550% elongation or 83% contraction under the photothermal stimulation. The actuation mechanism, involving photothermal/moisture-mechanical energy conversion, is clarified by a combination of experiments and finite element simulations. Specifically, MXene/CNF composites serve as both photothermal and hygroscopic agents to accelerate water evaporation under near-infrared (NIR) light and moisture absorption from ambient air. Due to their low-cost facile fabrication, large scalable dimensions, and robust strength coupled with dual responsiveness, these soft actuators are attractive for intelligent textiles and devices such as self-adaptive textiles, soft robotics, and wearable information encryption.

Explainable and visualizable machine learning models to predict biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer

PURPOSE

Machine learning (ML) models presented an excellent performance in the prognosis prediction. However, the black box characteristic of ML models limited the clinical applications. Here, we aimed to establish explainable and visualizable ML models to predict biochemical recurrence (BCR) of prostate cancer (PCa).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 647 PCa patients were retrospectively evaluated. Clinical parameters were identified using LASSO regression. Then, cohort was split into training and validation datasets with a ratio of 0.75:0.25 and BCR-related features were included in Cox regression and five ML algorithm to construct BCR prediction models. The clinical utility of each model was evaluated by concordance index (C-index) values and decision curve analyses (DCA). Besides, Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP) values were used to explain the features in the models.

RESULTS

We identified 11 BCR-related features using LASSO regression, then establishing five ML-based models, including random survival forest (RSF), survival support vector machine (SSVM), survival Tree (sTree), gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and a Cox regression model, C-index were 0.846 (95%CI 0.796-0.894), 0.774 (95%CI 0.712-0.834), 0.757 (95%CI 0.694-0.818), 0.820 (95%CI 0.765-0.869), 0.793 (95%CI 0.735-0.852), and 0.807 (95%CI 0.753-0.858), respectively. The DCA showed that RSF model had significant advantages over all models. In interpretability of ML models, the SHAP value demonstrated the tangible contribution of each feature in RSF model.

CONCLUSIONS

Our score system provide reference for the identification for BCR, and the crafting of a framework for making therapeutic decisions for PCa on a personalized basis.

Measurements of All-Particle Energy Spectrum and Mean Logarithmic Mass of Cosmic Rays from 0.3 to 30 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A

We present the measurements of all-particle energy spectrum and mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays in the energy range of 0.3-30 PeV using data collected from LHAASO-KM2A between September 2021 and December 2022, which is based on a nearly composition-independent energy reconstruction method, achieving unprecedented accuracy. Our analysis reveals the position of the knee at 3.67±0.05±0.15  PeV. Below the knee, the spectral index is found to be -2.7413±0.0004±0.0050, while above the knee, it is -3.128±0.005±0.027, with the sharpness of the transition measured with a statistical error of 2%. The mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays is almost heavier than helium in the whole measured energy range. It decreases from 1.7 at 0.3 PeV to 1.3 at 3 PeV, representing a 24% decline following a power law with an index of -0.1200±0.0003±0.0341. This is equivalent to an increase in abundance of light components. Above the knee, the mean logarithmic mass exhibits a power law trend towards heavier components, which is reversal to the behavior observed in the all-particle energy spectrum. Additionally, the knee position and the change in power-law index are approximately the same. These findings suggest that the knee observed in the all-particle spectrum corresponds to the knee of the light component, rather than the medium-heavy components.

[Clinical characteristics of 11 patients with Vibrio vulnificus infection and the establishment of a rapid diagnosis procedure for this disease]

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with Vibrio vulnificus infection, share diagnosis and treatment experience, and establish a rapid diagnosis procedure for this disease. Methods: This study was a retrospective case series study. From January 2009 to November 2022, 11 patients with Vibrio vulnificus infection who met the inclusion criteria were admitted to the Department of Burns and Wound Repair of Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital Affiliated to Southern Medical University. The gender, age, time of onset of illness, time of admission, time of diagnosis, route of infection, underlying diseases, affected limbs, clinical manifestations and signs on admission, white blood cell count, hemoglobin, platelet count, C-reactive protein (CRP), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), creatinine, procalcitonin, albumin, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and blood sodium levels on admission, culture results and metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) results of pathogenic bacteria and the Vibrio vulnificus drug susceptibility test results during hospitalization, treatment methods, length of hospital stay, and outcomes of all patients were recorded. Comparative analysis was conducted on the admission time and diagnosis time of patients with and without a history of exposure to seawater/marine products, as well as the fatality ratio and amputation of limbs/digits ratio of patients with and without early adequate antibiotic treatment. For the survived patients with hand involvement, the hand function was assessed using Brunnstrom staging at the last follow-up. Based on patients' clinical characteristics and treatment conditions, a rapid diagnosis procedure for Vibrio vulnificus infection was established. Results: There were 7 males and 4 females among the patients, aged (56±17) years. Most of the patients developed symptoms in summer and autumn. The admission time was 3.00 (1.00, 4.00) d after the onset of illness, and the diagnosis time was 4.00 (2.00, 8.00) d after the onset of illness. There were 7 and 4 patients with and without a history of contact with seawater/marine products, respectively, and the admission time of these two types of patients was similar (P>0.05). The diagnosis time of patients with a history of contact with seawater/marine products was 2.00 (2.00, 5.00) d after the onset of illness, which was significantly shorter than 9.00 (4.25, 13.00) d after the onset of illness for patients without a history of contact with seawater/marine products (Z=-2.01, P<0.05). Totally 10 patients had underlying diseases. The affected limbs were right-hand in 8 cases, left-hand in 1 case, and lower limb in 2 cases. On admission, a total of 9 patients had fever; 11 patients had pain at the infected site, and redness and swelling of the affected limb, and 9 patients each had ecchymosis/necrosis and blisters/blood blisters; 6 patients suffered from shock, and 2 patients developed multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. On admission, there were 8 patients with abnormal white blood cell count, hemoglobin, and albumin levels, 10 patients with abnormal CRP, procalcitonin, and NT-proBNP levels, 5 patients with abnormal creatinine and blood sodium levels, and fewer patients with abnormal platelet count, ALT, and AST levels. During hospitalization, 4 of the 11 wound tissue/exudation samples had positive pathogenic bacterial culture results, and the result reporting time was 5.00 (5.00, 5.00) d; 4 of the 9 blood specimens had positive pathogenic bacterial culture results, and the result reporting time was 3.50 (1.25, 5.00) d; the mNGS results of 7 wound tissue/exudation or blood samples were all positive, and the result reporting time was 1.00 (1.00, 2.00) d. The three strains of Vibrio vulnificus detected were sensitive to 10 commonly used clinical antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and amikacin, etc. A total of 10 patients received surgical treatment, 4 of whom had amputation of limbs/digits; all patients received anti-infection treatment. The length of hospital stay of 11 patients was (26±11) d, of whom 9 patients were cured and 2 patients died. Compared with that of the 6 patients who did not receive early adequate antibiotic treatment, the 5 patients who received early adequate antibiotic treatment had no significant changes in the fatality ratio or amputation of limbs/digits ratio (P>0.05). In 3 months to 2 years after surgery, the hand function of 8 patients was assessed, with results showing 4 cases of disabled hands, 2 cases of incompletely disabled hands, and 2 cases of recovered hands. When a patient had clinical symptoms of limb redness and swelling and a history of contact with seawater/marine products or a pre-examination triage RiCH score of Vibrio vulnificus sepsis ≥1, the etiological testing should be initiated immediately to quickly diagnose Vibrio vulnificus infection. Conclusions: Vibrio vulnificus infection occurs most frequently in summer and autumn, with clinical manifestations and laboratory test results showing obvious infection characteristics, and may be accompanied by damage to multiple organ functions. Both the fatality and disability ratios are high and have a great impact on the function of the affected limbs. Early diagnosis is difficult and treatment is easily delayed, but mNGS could facilitate rapid detection. For patients with red and swollen limbs accompanied by a history of contact with seawater/marine products or with a pre-examination triage RiCH score of Vibrio vulnificus sepsis ≥1, the etiological testing should be initiated immediately to quickly diagnose Vibrio vulnificus infection.

Apolipoprotein E is a Potential Biomarker for Predicting Cancer Prognosis and is Correlated with Immune Infiltration

Background

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a polymorphic protein that plays a role in lipoprotein transformation and metabolism. It is involved in numerous physiological processes within the body and is closely associated with tumor growth and metastasis. However, the role of APOE in pan-cancer has yet to be evaluated. Therefore, studying the association between APOE and various cancer types is crucial for providing a basis for individualized treatment strategies and clinical prognosis assessment.

Methods

We investigated the diagnostic and prognostic significance of APOE across 33 tumor types, as well as its correlation with tumor mutation burden (TMB) and microsatellite instability (MSI). Additionally, we employed the ESTIMATE and CIBERSORT algorithms to analyze the potential impact of APOE on the immune system. Furthermore, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was conducted to explore its underlying physiological function.

Results

Based on observations from a pan-cancer dataset, APOE expression was significantly different between cancer and normal tissues, and was simultaneously associated with survival outcomes in terms of cancer type, clinical annotation, TMB, MSI, and TICs abundance. In addition, the results also showed that expression of APOE may respond to a variety of cancer chemotherapy.

Conclusion

The findings from this study strongly indicate a close association between APOE and tumor development. Moreover, APOE shows promise as a potential biomarker for predicting prognosis and response to immunotherapy in patients with pan-cancer.

Functionalized MXene Films with Substantially Improved Low-Voltage Actuation

Ti3 C2 Tx MXene film is promising for low-voltage electrochemical actuators (ECAs) due to its excellent electrical conductivity, volumetric capacitance, and mechanical properties. However, its in-plane actuation is limited to little intralayer strain of MXene sheets under polarization. Here it is demonstrated that a simple tetrabutylammonium (TBA) functionalization of MXene improves the in-plane actuation strain by 337% and also enhances the mechanical property and stability in air and the electrolyte. Various in situ characterizations reveal that the improved actuation is ascribed to the co-insertion/desertion of TBA and Li ions into/from MXene interlayer galleries and inter-edge gaps that causes a large in-plane sliding of MXene sheets under negative/positive polarizations. The assembled bending actuator has a high strength and modulus and generates a peak-to-peak strain difference of 0.771% and a blocking force up to 51.5 times its own weight under 1 V. The designed soft robotic tweezer can grasp an object under 1 V and hold it firmly under 0 V. The novel sheet sliding mechanism resembling the filament sliding theory in skeletal muscles may inspire the design of high-performance actuators with other nanomaterials.

Preparation of a novel polypyrrole/dolomite composite adsorbent for efficient removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution

A novel adsorbent, deposited PPy on the DMI (PPy/DMI) composite, was successfully synthesized for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution. PPy/DMI composite was characterized by BET, SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS. The SEM and TEM analyses revealed that DMI can greatly reduce the aggregation of PPy and significantly enhance its adsorption performance. The Cr(VI) removal was highly pH dependent. The high selectivity of PPy/DMI composite for Cr(VI) removal was found even in the presence of co-existing ions. The adsorption kinetic process followed the pseudo-second-order equation, demonstrating that the Cr(VI) adsorption behavior onto PPy/DMI is chemisorption. Furthermore, the intra-particle diffusion model implied that the adsorption was controlled by both liquid membrane diffusion and internal diffusion. The adsorption isotherm data fitted well with the Langmuir model with the maximum adsorption capacity (406.50 mg/g at 323 K) which was considerably higher than that of other PPy-based adsorbents. The Cr(VI) adsorption onto PPy/DMI composite was endothermic. The main mechanisms of Cr(VI) removal are involved in adsorption through electrostatic attractions, ion exchange, and in situ reduction. The results suggested that PPy/DMI composite could be a promising candidate for efficient Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution.

Identification and evaluation of antioxidant peptides from highland barley distiller's grains protein hydrolysate assisted by molecular docking

The aim of this study was to identify antioxidant peptides from highland barley distiller's grains and evaluate their antioxidant activity in vitro. The results showed that the enzymatic hydrolysate of highland barley distiller's grains prepared by ultrasonic assisted alkaline protease had antioxidant properties, aromatic amino acids accounted for 61.48% of the total free amino acids and acidic/basic amino acids accounted for 40.82% of the total hydrolyzed amino acids in enzymatic hydrolysate. Ultrafiltration component F1 (Mw < 1 kDa) had the highest DPPH, ABTS and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and ferrous ion chelating activity, which were 93.92%, 69.59%, 50.27% and 0.71, respectively. Four peptides were identified and screened by LC-MS/MS and the P1 (SWDNFFR) and P4 (WDWVGGR) showed high scavenging ability of DPPH free radical (70.23%-62.84%) and ABTS free radical (30.87%-60.54%). Molecular docking showed that P1 and P4 formed multiple hydrogen bonds with central residues of MPO.

Selective detection of ionic liquid fluorescence probes for visual colorimetry of different metal ions

At present, the fast distinction of different metal ions in pure water media is not only a great challenge, but also drives the protection of water quality in environmental water bodies. In this paper, a novel ionic liquid fluorescent probe Glycolic Acid-L-Arginine (GA-L-Arg) was rationally created and designed through an in-depth study of ionic liquids. It is also used as an innovative multi-ion fluorescent probe for colorimetric detection and separate identification of Fe3+ and Co2+ in aqueous solutions of various metal ions. GA-L-Arg has excellent water solubility due to the strong hydrophilicity of Glycolic Acid and L-Arginine. The probe showed high sensitivity, extremely significant selectivity, and great pH stability for Fe3+ and Co2+ in pure water. The GA-L-Arg structure and the mechanism of Fe3+ and Co2+ detection were analyzed by infrared spectroscopic characterization and quantum chemical calculations. More importantly, the distinct colorimetric partitioning of Fe3+ and Co2+ was performed by the unique extraction of Fe3+ in the presence of the fluorescent probe and buffer solution.

Deciphering the molecular classification of pediatric sepsis: integrating WGCNA and machine learning-based classification with immune signatures for the development of an advanced diagnostic model

Introduction: Pediatric sepsis (PS) is a life-threatening infection associated with high mortality rates, necessitating a deeper understanding of its underlying pathological mechanisms. Recently discovered programmed cell death induced by copper has been implicated in various medical conditions, but its potential involvement in PS remains largely unexplored. Methods: We first analyzed the expression patterns of cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) and assessed the immune landscape of PS using the GSE66099 dataset. Subsequently, PS samples were isolated from the same dataset, and consensus clustering was performed based on differentially expressed CRGs. We applied weighted gene co-expression network analysis to identify hub genes associated with PS and cuproptosis. Results: We observed aberrant expression of 27 CRGs and a specific immune landscape in PS samples. Our findings revealed that patients in the GSE66099 dataset could be categorized into two cuproptosis clusters, each characterized by unique immune landscapes and varying functional classifications or enriched pathways. Among the machine learning approaches, Extreme Gradient Boosting demonstrated optimal performance as a diagnostic model for PS. Discussion: Our study provides valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying PS, highlighting the involvement of cuproptosis-related genes and immune cell infiltration.

Integrative analysis of gene expression profiles of substantia nigra identifies potential diagnosis biomarkers in Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease whose etiology is attributed to development of Lewy bodies and degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). Currently, there are no definitive diagnostic indicators for PD. In this study, we aimed to identify potential diagnostic biomarkers for PD and analyzed the impact of immune cell infiltrations on disease pathogenesis. The PD expression profile data for human SN tissue, GSE7621, GSE20141, GSE20159, GSE20163 and GSE20164 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database for use in the training model. After normalization and merging, we identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using the Robust rank aggregation (RRA) analysis. Simultaneously, DEGs after batch correction were identified. Gene interactions were determined through venn Diagram analysis. Functional analyses and protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks were used to the identify hub genes, which were visualized through Cytoscape. A Lasso Cox regression model was employed to identify the potential diagnostic genes. The GSE20292 dataset was used for validation. The proportion of infiltrating immune cells in the samples were determined via the CIBERSORT method. Sixty-two DEGs were screened in this study. They were found to be enriched in nerve conduction, dopamine (DA) metabolism, and DA biosynthesis Gene Ontology (GO) terms. The PPI network and Lasso Cox regression analysis revealed seven potential diagnostic genes, namely SLC18A2, TAC1, PCDH8, KIAA0319, PDE6H, AXIN1, and AGTR1, were subsequently validated in peripheral blood samples obtained from healthy control (HC) and PD patients, as well as in the GSE20292 dataset. The results revealed the exceptional sensitivity and specificity of these genes in PD diagnosis and monitoring. Moreover, PD patients exhibited a higher number of plasma cells, compared to HC individuals. The SLC18A2, TAC1, PCDH8, KIAA0319, PDE6H, AXIN1, and AGTR1 are potential diagnostic biomarkers for PD. Our findings also reveal the essential roles of immune cell infiltration in both disease onset and trajectory.

Efficient degradation of ciprofloxacin in wastewater by CuFe2O4/CuS photocatalyst activated peroxynomosulfate

In this study, CuFe2O4/CuS composite photocatalysts were successfully synthesized for the activation of peroxynomosulfate to remove ciprofloxacin from wastewater. The structural composition and morphology of the materials were analyzed by XRD, SEM, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties of the samples were tested by an electrochemical workstation. The band gap of the samples was calculated by DFT and compared with the experimental values. The effects of different catalysts, oxidant PMS concentrations, and coexisting ions on the experiments were investigated. The reusability and stability of the photocatalysts were also investigated. The mechanism of the photocatalytic degradation process was proposed based on the free radical trapping experiment. The results show that the p-p heterojunction formed between the two contact surfaces of the CuFe2O4 nanoparticle and CuS promoted the charge transfer between the interfaces and inhibited the recombination of electrons and holes. CuFe2O4-5/CuS photocatalyst has the best catalytic activity, and the removal rate of ciprofloxacin is 93.7%. The intermediates in the degradation process were tested by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and the molecular structure characteristics of ciprofloxacin were analyzed by combining with DFT calculations. The possible degradation pathways of pollutants were proposed. This study reveals the great potential of the photocatalyst CuFe2O4/CuS in the activation of PMS for the degradation of ciprofloxacin wastewater.

Immune checkpoint expression patterns on T cell subsets in light-chain amyloidosis: VISTA, PD-1, and TIGIT as potential therapeutic targets

Amyloid light chain (AL) amyloidosis is a rare plasma cell dyscrasia with dismal prognosis. This study aims to investigate the T-cell immune checkpoint expression patterns in systemic AL amyloidosis and its relationship with clinicobiological traits. We examined the frequencies of V-domain immunoglobulin suppressor of T cell activation+ (VISTA+), programmed cell death 1+ (PD-1+), T cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain-containing-3+ (Tim-3+), T cell immunoreceptor with Ig and ITIM domains+ (TIGIT+) T cells in peripheral blood (PB) and bone marrow (BM) from 19 patients with newly diagnosed AL amyloidosis. Patients with AL amyloidosis had significantly higher percentages of VISTA+ and PD-1+ T cells in PB than healthy individuals (HIs), with no statistical differences in BM. The percentages of some double-positive T cells in PB were also considerably higher in AL amyloidosis than those in HIs. Additionally, the patients with renal involvement had more PD-1+ and TIGIT+ T cells than the patients without, and PD-1+CD3+%, PD-1+CD4+%, PD-1+Treg% were positively correlated with 24-hour proteinuria levels. Furthermore, the AL amyloidosis patients had higher counts of PD-1+ Treg in PB than multiple myeloma (MM) patients, while the MM patients had higher counts of TIGIT+ T cells than AL amyloidosis patients. Collectively, this is the first report of elevated proportions of VISTA+ and PD-1+ T cells in PB of AL amyloidosis patients, indicating an immunosuppressive milieu, and the increased PD-1+ and TIGIT+ T cells were associated with renal damage. VISTA, PD-1, and TIGIT may be potential targets for reversing T-cell exhaustion in AL amyloidosis.

Prognostic value and immunological role of cathepsin S gene in pan‑cancer

The cathepsin S (CTSS) gene encodes a lysine cysteine protease and serves an important role in the development of autoimmune diseases, inflammation and nervous system diseases. Furthermore, CTSS is implicated in tumor invasion and metastasis by the induction of tumor angiogenesis and the degradation of the tumor extracellular matrix. Nevertheless, the precise impact of CTSS on predicting pan-cancer prognosis and its influence on the tumor microenvironment and immune infiltration in human cancers remains unknown. This present study employed a comprehensive array of bioinformatic methods to evaluate the expression of CTSS and its associations with prognosis, clinicopathological characteristics, tumor microenvironment, tumor immune infiltration, tumor mutational burden and microsatellite instability across numerous cancer types. The current study demonstrated abnormal expression and distinct genomic alteration profiles of CTSS in many of the cancers tested. Furthermore, CTSS expression exhibited close associations with the prognosis of numerous cancers. High CTSS expression was significantly associated with better overall survival and disease-specific survival in bladder urothelial carcinoma (BLCA) and skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) but worse outcomes in brain lower grade glioma (LGG) and uveal melanoma (UVM). Moreover, CTSS demonstrated significant correlations with tumor mutational burden and microsatellite instability in 8 and 12 cancer types respectively, as well as different responses in immunotherapy sub-cohorts, especially in melanoma and bladder cancers. CTSS expression showed a positive correlation with stromal and immune cell scores in the four aforementioned cancers. Moreover, CTSS expression was correlated with the number of infiltrating CD8+ T cells, CD4+ T cells and macrophages. Conversely, CTSS was negatively associated with resting Mast cells, resting NK cells and resting memory CD4+ T cell infiltration in BLCA, SKCM and kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC). Furthermore, CTSS expression was correlated with immune-related gene expression, notably PDCD1, LAG3, PDCD1 and TIGIT in BLCA, KIRC, SKCM, LGG and UVM. Functional enrichment analysis suggested that CTSS could drive a dynamic adjustment of biological functions and pathways in BLCA, SKCM, LGG and UVM, including immune response regulating signaling pathways, regulation of lymphocyte activation and T cell receptor singling pathways. The current study suggested that CTSS could be an essential biomarker for prognosis and immune infiltration features in multiple cancers.

Prediction of suitable habitat shifts and assessment of ecological niche overlaps for three Tridentiger species with intertidal and subtidal characteristics under future climate changes

To show how dramatic global climate change affects marine ecosystem species in different habitats. We used a joint species distribution model (SDM) and an ecological niche model (ENM) to investigate the suitable habitat shifts and ecological niche overlaps of the Tridentiger fishes. In the present study, the SDM results showed that 5 hotspots were identified for T. trigonocephalus and T. barbatus, and 4 hotspots for T. bifasciatus. The study on center-of-mass transfer revealed notable reductions in the habitual range of the three Tridentiger species with future climate change and no significant bipolar shifts in the center of mass. The ENM results indicated that T. trigonocephalus and T. barbatus exhibited the greatest ecological niche overlap with Schoener's D (D) and Hellinger-based I (I) values of 0.4719 and 0.7690, respectively. Both SDM and ENM results have suggested that T. trigonocephalus occupied a wider distribution and greater adaptability to future climate change. This study sought to measure the variations in the effects of global climate change on marine species in different habitats. Our study first found that intertidal species with specific life histories may be more resilient to environmental change.

Higher PD-1/Tim-3 expression on IFN-γ+ T cells is associated with poor prognosis in patients with acute myeloid leukemia

With the success of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI), such as anti- programmed death-1 (PD-1) antibody for solid tumors and lymphoma immunotherapy, a number of clinical trials with ICIs have been attempted for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) immunotherapy; however, limited clinical efficacy has been reported. This may be due to the heterogeneity of immune microenvironments and various degrees of T cell exhaustion in patients and may be involved in the IFN-γ pathway. In this study, we first characterized the percentage of PD-1+ and T cell immunoglobulin mucin-domain-containing-3 (Tim-3) +IFN-γ+ T cells in peripheral blood (PB) in AML compared with healthy individuals (HIs) by flow cytometry and further discussed the possibility of the reversal of T cell exhaustion to restore the secretion capacity of cytokines in T cells in AML based on blockade of PD-1 or Tim-3 (anti-PD-1 and anti-Tim-3 antibody) in vitro using a cytokine protein chip. A significantly increased percentage of PD-1+, Tim-3+, and PD-1+Tim-3+ IFN-γ+ T cells was observed in PB from patients with AML in comparison with HIs. Moreover, higher PD-1+IFN-γ+CD3+/CD8+ T cell levels were associated with poor overall survival in AML patients. Regarding leukemia cells, the percentage of Tim-3 in CD117+CD34+ AML cells was positively correlated with PD-1 in IFN-γ+CD4+ T cells. Furthermore, blocking PD-1 and Tim-3 may involve multiple cytokines and helper T cell subsets, mainly Th1 and Treg cells. Blockade of PD-1 or Tim-3 tends to restore cytokine secretion to a certain extent, a synergistic effect shown by the co-blockade of PD-1 and Tim-3. However, we also demonstrated the heterogeneity of secretory cytokines in ICI-treated T cells in AML patients.

Polyamine signaling communications play a key role in regulating the pathogenicity of Dickeya fangzhongdai

IMPORTANCE

Dickeya fangzhongdai is a newly identified plant bacterial pathogen with a wide host range. A clear understanding of the cell-to-cell communication systems that modulate the bacterial virulence is of key importance for elucidating its pathogenic mechanisms and for disease control. In this study, we present evidence that putrescine molecules from the pathogen and host plants play an essential role in regulating the bacterial virulence. The significance of this study is in (i) demonstrating that putrescine signaling system regulates D. fangzhongdai virulence mainly through modulating the bacterial motility and production of PCWD enzymes, (ii) outlining the signaling and regulatory mechanisms with which putrescine signaling system modulates the above virulence traits, and (iii) validating that D. fangzhongdai could use both arginine and ornithine pathways to synthesize putrescine signals. To our knowledge, this is the first report to show that putrescine signaling system plays a key role in modulating the pathogenicity of D. fangzhongdai.

Characterization of the Arn lipopolysaccharide modification system essential for zeamine resistance unveils its new roles in Dickeya oryzae physiology and virulence

The zeamines produced by Dickeya oryzae are potent polyamine antibiotics and phytotoxins that are essential for bacterial virulence. We recently showed that the RND efflux pump DesABC in D. oryzae confers partial resistance to zeamines. To fully elucidate the bacterial self-protection mechanisms, in this study we used transposon mutagenesis to identify the genes encoding proteins involved in zeamine resistance in D. oryzae EC1. This led to the identification of a seven-gene operon, arnEC1 , that encodes enzyme homologues associated with lipopolysaccharide modification. Deletion of the arnEC1 genes in strain EC1 compromised its zeamine resistance 8- to 16-fold. Further deletion of the des gene in the arnEC1 mutant background reduced zeamine resistance to a level similar to that of the zeamine-sensitive Escherichia coli DH5α. Intriguingly, the arnEC1 mutants showed varied bacterial virulence on rice, potato, and Chinese cabbage. Further analyses demonstrated that ArnBCATEC1 are involved in maintenance of the bacterial nonmucoid morphotype by repressing the expression of capsular polysaccharide genes and that ArnBEC1 is a bacterial virulence determinant, influencing transcriptional expression of over 650 genes and playing a key role in modulating bacterial motility and virulence. Taken together, these findings decipher a novel zeamine resistance mechanism in D. oryzae and document new roles of the Arn enzymes in modulation of bacterial physiology and virulence.

Biofilm formation in xenobiotic-degrading microorganisms

The increased presence of xenobiotics affects living organisms and the environment at large on a global scale. Microbial degradation is effective for the removal of xenobiotics from the ecosystem. In natural habitats, biofilms are formed by single or multiple populations attached to biotic/abiotic surfaces and interfaces. The attachment of microbial cells to these surfaces is possible via the matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs). However, the molecular machinery underlying the development of biofilms differs depending on the microbial species. Biofilms act as biocatalysts and degrade xenobiotic compounds, thereby removing them from the environment. Quorum sensing (QS) helps with biofilm formation and is linked to the development of biofilms in natural contaminated sites. To date, scant information is available about the biofilm-mediated degradation of toxic chemicals from the environment. Therefore, we review novel insights into the impact of microbial biofilms in xenobiotic contamination remediation, the regulation of biofilms in contaminated sites, and the implications for large-scale xenobiotic compound treatment.

Unlocking sustainable solutions: controlled Cu2+ dosing enables efficient recovery and reuse of high-purity copper pyrophosphate from electroplating wastewater

The electroplating process of copper pyrophosphate (Cu2P2O7) results in the production of a large volume of wastewater that contains a high concentration of copper (Cu). Currently, conventional lime precipitation creates a substantial amount of secondary pollution, which adds extra economic and environmental burdens. In this study, we suggest a straightforward method for on-site recovery of Cu from Cu2P2O7 electroplating wastewater. By optimizing various parameters, characterizing the resulting product, assessing its electroplating capabilities, and analyzing the speciation during the reaction, we comprehensively investigated the feasibility and mechanism of this technique. The results demonstrated that, under the optimal conditions (Cu/P molar ratio of 0.96, pH of 5.0, and a reaction time of 5.0 min), the concentration of residual Cu remained stable between 22.2 and 27.7 mg/L, even when the initial Cu concentrations varied. The addition of Cu triggered a series of hydrolysis and ionization reactions, primarily leading to the formation of Cu2P2O7·3H2O. The harvested Cu2P2O7·3H2O proved to be suitable for practical electroplating applications, exhibiting comparable performance to commercially available Cu2P2O7·3H2O. This demonstrates the feasibility of recovering high-purity Cu2P2O7·3H2O from copper electroplating wastewater, offering a promising approach for on-site copper reuse and concurrently reducing the demand for natural copper resources. Furthermore, this approach significantly reduces the generation of solid waste, aligning with the principles of sustainable development.

Characteristics variations of size-fractionated anammox granules and identification of the potential effects on these evolutions

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) granulation which contributed to system stabilization and performance improvement has great potential in the field of wastewater nitrogen removal. The researchers fractionated anammox granules into small-size (0.5-0.9 mm), medium-size (1.8-2.2 mm), and large-size (2.8-3.5 mm) categories to examine their properties and mechanisms. Various analyses, including high-throughput sequencing, determination of inorganic elements and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and microbial function prediction, were conducted to characterize these granules and understand their impact. The results revealed distinct characteristics among the different-sized granules. Medium-size granules exhibited the highest sphericity, EPS content, and anammox abundance. In contrast, large-size granules had the highest specific surface area, heme c content, specific anammox activity, biodiversity, and abundance of filamentous bacteria. Furthermore, the precipitates within the granules were identified as CaCO3 and MgCO3, with the highest inorganic element content found in the large-size granules. Microbial community and function annotation also varied with granule size. Based on systematic analysis, the researchers concluded that cell growth, chemical precipitation, EPS secretion, and interspecies interaction all played a role in granulation. Small-size granules were primarily formed through cell growth and biofilm formation. As granule size increased, EPS secretion and chemical precipitation became more influential in the granulation process. In the large-size granules, chemical precipitation and interspecies interaction, including synergistic effects with nitrifying, denitrifying, and filamentous bacteria, as well as metabolic cross-feeding, played significant roles in aggregation. This interplay ultimately contributed to higher anammox activity in the large-size granules. By fully understanding the mechanisms involved in granulation, this study provides valuable insights for the acclimation of anammox granules with optimal sizes under different operational conditions.

A Systematic Immune and Prognostic Analysis of CD48 Interaction with Tumor Microenvironment in Pan-Cancer

Background

The cluster of differentiation 48 (CD48) is a member of the signaling lymphocyte activation molecule family, constitutively expressed on most hematopoietic cells. CD48 was reported to affect immune regulation in certain tumors, thereby influencing tumor development and prognosis, but its impact on the prognosis and immune infiltration in pan-cancer remains unclear.

Material and Methods

We systematically analyzed the raw data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Tumor Immune Estimation Resource (TIMER), and Tumor Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion (TIDE) databases. Initially, we investigated the differences in CD48 expression between pan-cancer and adjacent normal tissues. Then, the correlation analysis of CD48 with tumor mutational burden (TMB), microsatellite instability (MSI), tumor microenvironment (TME), and immune-related genes was evaluated. Moreover, bioinformatics tools: ESTIMATE and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) were used for tumor immunology analysis in pan-cancer. We performed validation studies including quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and Western blotting.

Results

Differential analysis revealed that CD48 was significantly altered in pan-cancer as compared with normal tissues. Meanwhile, the survival analysis demonstrated that CD48 strongly correlated with overall survival (OS), disease-free interval (DFI), progression-free interval (PFI), and disease-specific survival (DSS), indicating its crucial role in the tumor patients' prognosis. CD48 expression was also associated with TMB and MSI levels in 17 and 14 types of pan-cancers, respectively. Moreover, CD48 was linked to immune infiltrating cells and stromal components in the TME.

Conclusion

Concludingly, patients with pan-cancer may benefit from evaluating CD48 as a prognostic and immunotherapy response biomarker.

Printed sustainable elastomeric conductor for soft electronics

The widespread adoption of renewable and sustainable elastomers in stretchable electronics has been impeded by challenges in their fabrication and lacklustre performance. Here, we realize a printed sustainable stretchable conductor with superior electrical performance by synthesizing sustainable and recyclable vegetable oil polyurethane (VegPU) elastomeric binder and developing a solution sintering method for their composites with Ag flakes. The binder impedes the propagation of cracks through its porous network, while the solution sintering reaction reduces the resistance increment upon stretching, resulting in high stretchability (350%), superior conductivity (12833 S cm-1), and low hysteresis (0.333) after 100% cyclic stretching. The sustainable conductor was used to print durable and stretchable impedance sensors for non-obstructive detection of fruit maturity in food sensing technology. The combination of sustainable materials and strategies for realizing high-performance stretchable conductors provides a roadmap for the development of sustainable stretchable electronics.

Waste tissue-based bilayer solar evaporator for efficient solar photothermal generation of clean water

Solar photothermal water evaporation technology has attracted attention owing to its promising applications in wastewater treatment and desalination for producing clean water. However, high-performance solar evaporators are still limited by the complex manufacturing process, less flexibility, intolerance to salt, high cost, and low water evaporation efficiency.In this study, composite fibre paper composed of waste tissue paper, aramid nanofibers, and polyaniline was prepared to produce clean water. The evaporator was designed to pump water through a cotton wick to the composite paper, which reduced heat loss and avoided the deposition of salt on the surface. The use of waste tissue paper solves the problem of waste disposal, increases the commercial value of waste tissue, and reduces production costs. The composite fibre paper exhibited broad-band light absorption of an average of 96%. The average evaporation rate of the solar evaporator was 1.43 kg m-2 h-1, and the photothermal conversion efficiency was 98.33% under 1 sun illumination. This solar evaporator is easily fabricated and is cost-effective, demonstrating the enormous potential for real-world wastewater treatment and desalination to produce clean water.

New roles for Bacillus thuringiensis in the removal of environmental pollutants

For a long time, the well-known Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has been extensively studied and developed as a biological insecticide for Lepidoptera and Coleoptera pests due to its ability to secrete a large number of specific insecticidal proteins. In recent years, studies have found that Bt strains can also potentially biodegrade residual pollutants in the environment. Many researchers have isolated Bt strains from multiple sites polluted by exogenous compounds and characterized and identified their xenobiotic-degrading potential. Furthermore, its pathway for degradation was also investigated at molecular level, and a number of major genes/enzymes responsible for degradation have been explored. At present, a variety of xenobiotics involved in degradation in Bt have been reported, including inorganic pollutants (used in the field of heavy metal biosorption and recovery and precious metal recovery and regeneration), pesticides (chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, 2,2-dichloropropionic acid, etc.), organic tin, petroleum and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, reactive dyes (congo red, methyl orange, methyl blue, etc.), and ibuprofen, among others. In this paper, the biodegrading ability of Bt is reviewed according to the categories of related pollutants, so as to emphasize that Bt is a powerful agent for removing environmental pollutants.

Microbial degradation as a powerful weapon in the removal of sulfonylurea herbicides

Sulfonylurea herbicides have been widely used worldwide and play a significant role in modern agricultural production. However, these herbicides have adverse biological effects that can damage the ecosystems and harm human health. As such, rapid and effective techniques that remove sulfonylurea residues from the environment are urgently required. Attempts have been made to remove sulfonylurea residues from environment using various techniques such as incineration, adsorption, photolysis, ozonation, and microbial degradation. Among them, biodegradation is regarded as a practical and environmentally responsible way to eliminate pesticide residues. Microbial strains such as Talaromyces flavus LZM1, Methylopila sp. SD-1, Ochrobactrum sp. ZWS16, Staphylococcus cohnii ZWS13, Enterobacter ludwigii sp. CE-1, Phlebia sp. 606, and Bacillus subtilis LXL-7 can almost completely degrade sulfonylureas. The degradation mechanism of the strains is such that sulfonylureas can be catalyzed by bridge hydrolysis to produce sulfonamides and heterocyclic compounds, which deactivate sulfonylureas. The molecular mechanisms associated with microbial degradation of sulfonylureas are relatively poorly studied, with hydrolase, oxidase, dehydrogenase and esterase currently known to play a pivotal role in the catabolic pathways of sulfonylureas. Till date, there are no reports specifically on the microbial degrading species and biochemical mechanisms of sulfonylureas. Hence, in this article, the degradation strains, metabolic pathways, and biochemical mechanisms of sulfonylurea biodegradation, along with its toxic effects on aquatic and terrestrial animals, are discussed in depth in order to provide new ideas for remediation of soil and sediments polluted by sulfonylurea herbicides.

Measurement of Ultra-High-Energy Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission of the Galactic Plane from 10 TeV to 1 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A

The diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission, mainly produced via interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium and/or radiation field, is a very important probe of the distribution, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this Letter, we report the measurements of diffuse γ rays from the Galactic plane between 10 TeV and 1 PeV energies, with the square kilometer array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Diffuse emissions from the inner (15°10  TeV). The energy spectrum in the inner Galaxy regions can be described by a power-law function with an index of -2.99±0.04, which is different from the curved spectrum as expected from hadronic interactions between locally measured cosmic rays and the line-of-sight integrated gas content. Furthermore, the measured flux is higher by a factor of ∼3 than the prediction. A similar spectrum with an index of -2.99±0.07 is found in the outer Galaxy region, and the absolute flux for 10≲E≲60  TeV is again higher than the prediction for hadronic cosmic ray interactions. The latitude distributions of the diffuse emission are consistent with the gas distribution, while the longitude distributions show clear deviation from the gas distribution. The LHAASO measurements imply that either additional emission sources exist or cosmic ray intensities have spatial variations.

High-Efficient Anti-Icing/Deicing Method Based on Graphene Foams

Anti-icing/deicing has always been a focal issue in modern industries. A novel anti-icing/deicing material based on graphene foams (GF) is prepared in this paper, which integrates multiple functions, including electrothermal conversion, photothermal conversion, and superhydrophobicity. The GF sheet is used as a bottom layer bonded on the protected substrate, which is covered by a polymeric composite coating filled with TiN and SiO2 nanoparticles. Electric heating and light heating experiments are performed to study the anti-icing/deicing performances of such a GF-based material. It is found that, under the unique action of electric fields, a voltage of only 1 V is needed to increase the surface temperature from minus tens of degrees to the one above zero within 400 s, which is much lower than their previous counterparts of more than 10 V to achieve the same unfreezing effect. A slight increase of the applied voltage to 1.5 V can even result in a remarkable increase of the surface temperature from room temperature to more than 150 °C within 200 s, in contrast to existing electric heating techniques to attain peak temperatures of about 100 °C at the expense of tens of volts. Such performances enable the GF-based material to achieve an outstanding electrothermal energy conversion rate of more than 90%. Furthermore, with the help of sunlight illumination in addition to the electric power, not only can the critical voltage to prevent icing be reduced but also a much more rapid and adequate removal of ice or frost from the surface can be realized compared with the deicing/defrosting performance under either electric or light field alone. All of these results demonstrate the obvious advantages of the present method in superior energy utilization efficiency and universal applicability to dark and sunlight environments, which should be particularly useful for at-all-cost protection of key components in industrial equipment from icing.

Effectiveness of Nonpharmacologic Interventions for Chemotherapy-Related Cognitive Impairment in Breast Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Neurotoxicity is a major adverse effect of chemotherapy in breast cancer (BC) patients. A number of nonpharmacologic interventions are used to alleviate chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI), but no studies have compared their effectiveness.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to identify and compare the effectiveness of different nonpharmacologic interventions for CRCI in BC patients.

METHODS

A systematic review and network meta-analysis was conducted following the Cochrane guidelines. All randomized controlled trials were searched in the Cochrane Library, PubMed, MEDLINE (via OVID), Web of Science, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases from inception to September 2021. Studies using nonpharmacologic interventions to manage CRCI symptoms were included. A network meta-analysis and a comparative effects ranking were completed by STATA v14.0.

RESULTS

Twelve studies with 8 nonpharmacologic interventions were included. For subjective outcomes on CRCI, there was no significant difference between nonpharmacologic interventions. For objective outcomes, qigong and exercise were more effective than the psychotherapy. Qigong and exercise were also more effective than music therapy. The top 3 interventions were psychotherapy (83.4%), music therapy (60.8%), and electroacupuncture (52.5%) for subjective outcomes and qigong (87.7%), exercise (82.1%), and electroacupuncture (70.3%) for objective outcomes.

CONCLUSION

In the subjective evaluation, it was difficult to judge which interventions are best, but psychotherapy had the greatest probability. For objective evaluation, qigong and exercise may be the best nonpharmacologic interventions.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

This study provides evidence for the effectiveness of nonpharmacologic interventions for CRCI in BC patients and facilitates support for future clinical trials and work.

The Isolate Pseudomonas multiresinivorans QL-9a Quenches the Quorum Sensing Signal and Suppresses Plant Soft Rot Disease

Quorum sensing (QS) is a communication mechanism used among microorganisms that regulate the population density and behavior by sensing the concentration of signaling molecules. Quorum quenching (QQ), a novel, eco-friendly, and efficient method for disease control, interferes with QS by disturbing the production and enzymatic degradation of signaling molecules, blocking communication among microorganisms, and thus has deep potential for use in plant disease control. Pectobacterium carotovorum can cause bacterial soft rot, resulting in yield reduction in a variety of crops worldwide, and can be mediated and regulated by the N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs), which are typical signaling molecules. In this study, a novel quenching strain of Pseudomonas multiresinivorans QL-9a was isolated and characterized, and it showed excellent degradation ability against AHLs, degrading 98.20% of N-(-3-oxohexanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone (OHHL) within 48 h. Based on the results of the gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analysis, a possible pathway was proposed to decompose OHHL into fatty acids and homoserine lactone, in which AHL acylase was involved. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that the QL-9a strain and its crude enzyme are promising biocontrol agents that can considerably reduce the severity of the soft rot disease brought on by P. carotovorum, consequently preventing the maceration of a variety of host plant tissues. All of these results suggest promising applications of the QL-9a strain and its crude enzyme in the control of various plant diseases mediated by AHLs.

Construction and validation of the Dalian emotional movement open-source set (DEMOS)

Human body movements are important for emotion recognition and social communication and have received extensive attention from researchers. In this field, emotional biological motion stimuli, as depicted by point-light displays, are widely used. However, the number of stimuli in the existing material library is small, and there is a lack of standardized indicators, which subsequently limits experimental design and conduction. Therefore, based on our prior kinematic dataset, we constructed the Dalian Emotional Movement Open-source Set (DEMOS) using computational modeling. The DEMOS has three views (i.e., frontal 0°, left 45°, and left 90°) and in total comprises 2664 high-quality videos of emotional biological motion, each displaying happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and neutral. All stimuli were validated in terms of recognition accuracy, emotional intensity, and subjective movement. The objective movement for each expression was also calculated. The DEMOS can be downloaded for free from https://osf.io/83fst/ . To our knowledge, this is the largest multi-view emotional biological motion set based on the whole body. The DEMOS can be applied in many fields, including affective computing, social cognition, and psychiatry.

[Brief introduction on compilation and editions of Yang ke xuan cui]

Yang ke xuan cui («») is a surgical work compiled by Chen Wenzhi () of the Ming Dynasty. There are few of research on the completion and author of the book. Based on the evidences in the local chronicles, the prefaces and postscripts of the book, it has been verified that the book was originally completed no later than 1591, and Chen Wenzhi passed away no later than 1623. After investigating the 6 editions collected by 8 institutions, a collection of 11 books in total, by comparing the characteristics and circulation relationship of each edition, two systems of circulation were sorted out: block-printed edition of Xu Xi () and review edition of Xu Dachun ().

A case report of heterotopic gastric mucosa in the rectum treated by endoscopic submucosal dissection and a systematic review

RATIONALE

Heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM) can occur in all segments of the gastrointestinal tract, but rectal is very rare. In recent years, rectal HGM is more often treated by endoscopic resection (ER).

PATIENT CONCERNS

A 28-year-old female was admitted to the hospital with the chief complaint of "a rectal lesion found on physical examination".

DIAGNOSES

Heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM).

INTERVENTIONS

An endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) was performed to completely dissect the lesion.

OUTCOMES

The patient recovered well at 1 month of follow-up and did not suffer from further blood in the stool.

LESSONS

Rectal HGM has acid secretion function and HP can be colonized, causing a variety of symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloody stool, and anal pain and has the potential risk of malignant transformation; resection is the best treatment method, and ESD has its unique advantages and can be promoted in the clinic.

Artificial intelligence for the diagnosis of clinically significant prostate cancer based on multimodal data: a multicenter study

BACKGROUND

The introduction of multiparameter MRI and novel biomarkers has greatly improved the prediction of clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa). However, decision-making regarding prostate biopsy and prebiopsy examinations is still difficult. We aimed to establish a quick and economic tool to improve the detection of csPCa based on routinely performed clinical examinations through an automated machine learning platform (AutoML).

METHODS

This study included a multicenter retrospective cohort and two prospective cohorts with 4747 cases from 9 hospitals across China. The multimodal data, including demographics, clinical characteristics, laboratory tests, and ultrasound reports, of consecutive participants were retrieved using extract-transform-load tools. AutoML was applied to explore potential data processing patterns and the most suitable algorithm to build the Prostate Cancer Artificial Intelligence Diagnostic System (PCAIDS). The diagnostic performance was determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) for discriminating csPCa from insignificant prostate cancer (PCa) and benign disease. The clinical utility was evaluated by decision curve analysis (DCA) and waterfall plots.

RESULTS

The random forest algorithm was applied in the feature selection, and the AutoML algorithm was applied for model establishment. The area under the curve (AUC) value in identifying csPCa was 0.853 in the training cohort, 0.820 in the validation cohort, 0.807 in the Changhai prospective cohort, and 0.850 in the Zhongda prospective cohort. DCA showed that the PCAIDS was superior to PSA or fPSA/tPSA for diagnosing csPCa with a higher net benefit for all threshold probabilities in all cohorts. Setting a fixed sensitivity of 95%, a total of 32.2%, 17.6%, and 26.3% of unnecessary biopsies could be avoided with less than 5% of csPCa missed in the validation cohort, Changhai and Zhongda prospective cohorts, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The PCAIDS was an effective tool to inform decision-making regarding the need for prostate biopsy and prebiopsy examinations such as mpMRI. Further prospective and international studies are warranted to validate the findings of this study.

Recent Progress in Testing and Characterization of Hardenability of Aluminum Alloys: A Review

In this paper, the progress of the test methods and characterization approaches of aluminum alloys hardenability was reviewed in detail. The test method mainly included the traditional end-quenching method and the modified method. While the characterization approaches of alloy hardenability consist mainly of ageing hardness curves, solid solution conductivity curves, ageing tensile curves, time temperature transformation (TTT) curves, time temperature properties (TTP) curves, continuous cooling transformation (CCT) curves, and advanced theoretical derivation method have appeared in recent years. The hardenability testing equipment for different tested samples with different material natures, engineering applications properties, and measurement sizes was introduced. Meanwhile, the improvement programmed proposed for shortcomings in the traditional hardenability testing process and the current deficiencies during the overall hardenability testing process were also presented. In addition, the influence factors from the view of composition design applied to the hardenability behaviors of Aluminum alloys were summarized. Among them, the combined addition of micro-alloying elements is considered to be a better method for improving the hardenability of high-strength aluminum alloys.

Biotechnological Tools to Elucidate the Mechanism of Plant and Nematode Interactions

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) pose a threat to global food security in both the developed and developing worlds. PPNs cause crop losses worth a total of more than USD 150 billion worldwide. The sedentary root-knot nematodes (RKNs) also cause severe damage to various agricultural crops and establish compatible relationships with a broad range of host plants. This review aims to provide a broad overview of the strategies used to identify the morpho-physiological and molecular events that occur during RKN parasitism. It describes the most current developments in the transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic strategies of nematodes, which are important for understanding compatible interactions of plants and nematodes, and several strategies for enhancing plant resistance against RKNs. We will highlight recent rapid advances in molecular strategies, such as gene-silencing technologies, RNA interference (RNAi), and small interfering RNA (siRNA) effector proteins, that are leading to considerable progress in understanding the mechanism of plant-nematode interactions. We also take into account genetic engineering strategies, such as targeted genome editing techniques, the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR associated protein 9 (Cas9) (CRISPR/Cas-9) system, and quantitative trait loci (QTL), to enhance the resistance of plants against nematodes.

[The mediating effect of resilience on anxiety and subjective well-being in occupational population]

Objective: To explore the current situation of anxiety, subjective well-being in occupational population and the mediating effect of resilience. Methods: From March 24th to 26th, 2020, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among occupational population aged ≥18 years old using online questionnaires. A total of 2134 valid questionnaires were obtained, with respondents from 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government. Their general demographic data, subjective well-being, anxiety, and resilience were collected. Pearson χ(2) test and Spearson correlation analysis were used for data analysis, and structural equation model was used to explore the mediating effect of resilience on anxiety and subjective well-being. Results: The age of the respondents ranged from 18 to 60 years old, with an average age of (31.19±7.09) years old, including 1075 (50.4%) women and 1059 (49.6%) men. The positive rates of low subjective well-being and anxiety were 46.5% (992/2134) and 28.4% (607/2134), respectively. Anxiety scores were significantly negatively correlated with subjective well-being scores and resilience scores (r(s)=-0.52, -0.41, P<0.05), while resilience was significantly positively correlated with subjective well-being (r(s)=0.32, P<0.05). Structural equation models showed that anxiety had a negative predictive effect on subjective well-being, while resilience not only had a positive predictive effect on subjective well-being, but also played a mediating role between anxiety and subjective well-being, with a mediating effect of 9.9%. Conclusion: The situation of anxiety and well-being in the occupational population is still not optimistic, and resilience has a mediating effect between anxiety and subjective well-being.

High-efficiency degradation of methomyl by the novel bacterial consortium MF0904: Performance, structural analysis, metabolic pathways, and environmental bioremediation

Methomyl is a widely used carbamate pesticide, which has adverse biological effects and poses a serious threat to ecological environments and human health. Several bacterial isolates have been investigated for removing methomyl from environment. However, low degradation efficiency and poor environmental adaptability of pure cultures severely limits their potential for bioremediation of methomyl-contaminated environment. Here, a novel microbial consortium, MF0904, can degrade 100% of 25 mg/L methomyl within 96 h, an efficiency higher than that of any other consortia or pure microbes reported so far. The sequencing analysis revealed that Pandoraea, Stenotrophomonas and Paracoccus were the predominant members of MF0904 in the degradation process, suggesting that these genera might play pivotal roles in methomyl biodegradation. Moreover, five new metabolites including ethanamine, 1,2-dimethyldisulfane, 2-hydroxyacetonitrile, N-hydroxyacetamide, and acetaldehyde were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, indicating that methomyl could be degraded firstly by hydrolysis of its ester bond, followed by cleavage of the C-S ring and subsequent metabolism. Furthermore, MF0904 can successfully colonize and substantially enhance methomyl degradation in different soils, with complete degradation of 25 mg/L methomyl within 96 and 72 h in sterile and nonsterile soil, respectively. Together, the discovery of microbial consortium MF0904 fills a gap in the synergistic metabolism of methomyl at the community level and provides a potential candidate for bioremediation applications.

A tera-electron volt afterglow from a narrow jet in an extremely bright gamma-ray burst

Some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have a tera-electron volt (TeV) afterglow, but the early onset of this has not been observed. We report observations with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory of the bright GRB 221009A, which serendipitously occurred within the instrument field of view. More than 64,000 photons >0.2 TeV were detected within the first 3000 seconds. The TeV flux began several minutes after the GRB trigger, then rose to a peak about 10 seconds later. This was followed by a decay phase, which became more rapid ~650 seconds after the peak. We interpret the emission using a model of a relativistic jet with half-opening angle ~0.8°. This is consistent with the core of a structured jet and could explain the high isotropic energy of this GRB.

Electrospun chitosan-based nanofibers loading tea tree oil for fresh salmon fillet shelf-life extension

Bioactive packaging can improve the shelf-life of food products and enhance consumer health. It can also alleviate environmental stress on the planet by reducing food waste. Here, the electrospinning of tea tree oil-loaded 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan nanofibers was investigated. The fabricated nanofiber films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle meter analysis. The prepared nanofibers have a well-defined diameter of about 200 nm and a smooth shape. They have good antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in vitro. Tea tree oil-loaded chitosan-based nanofibers were found to be effective in delaying spoilage and extending the shelf life of salmon by sensory evaluation, texture analysis, color, total viable counts, thiobarbituric acid, and total volatile basic nitrogen during storage in the freshness experiments, thus indicating their health benefits in bioactive packaging.

Current insights into the microbial degradation of nicosulfuron: Strains, metabolic pathways, and molecular mechanisms

Nicosulfuron is among the sulfonylurea herbicides that are widely used to control annual and perennial grass weeds in cornfields. However, nicosulfuron residues in the environment are likely to cause long-lasting harmful environmental and biological effects. Nicosulfuron degrades via photo-degradation, chemical hydrolysis, and microbial degradation. The latter is crucial for pesticide degradation and has become an essential strategy to remove nicosulfuron residues from the environment. Most previous studies have focused on the screening, degradation characteristics, and degradation pathways of biodegrader microorganisms. The isolated nicosulfuron-degrading strains include Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Alcaligenes, Rhodopseudomonas, Ochrobactrum, Micrococcus, Serratia, Penicillium, Aspergillus, among others, all of which have good degradation efficiency. Two main intermediates, 2-amino-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine (ADMP) and 2-aminosulfonyl-N,N-dimethylnicotinamide (ASDM), are produced during microbial degradation and are derived from the C-N, C-S, and S-N bond breaks on the sulfonylurea bridge, covering almost every bacterial degradation pathway. In addition, enzymes related to the degradation of nicosulfuron have been identified successively, including the manganese ABC transporter (hydrolase), Flavin-containing monooxygenase (oxidase), and E3 (esterase). Further in-depth studies based on molecular biology and genetics are needed to elaborate on their role in the evolution of novel catabolic pathways and the microbial degradation of nicosulfuron. To date, few reviews have focused on the microbial degradation and degradation mechanisms of nicosulfuron. This review summarizes recent advances in nicosulfuron degradation and comprehensively discusses the potential of nicosulfuron-degrading microorganisms for bioremediating contaminated environments, providing a reference for further research development on nicosulfuron biodegradation in the future.

The transformation of dissolved organic matter and formation of halogenated by-products during electrochemical advanced oxidation pretreatment for shale gas produced water

Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) have shown great potential for the treatment of shale gas produced water (SGPW). In this study, we investigated the transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during EAOPs of SGPW and the formation of toxic halogenated by-products at various current densities, using fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. We found that the priority of DOM removal was terrestrial humic-like > microbial humic-like > protein-like substances. Non-Halogenated organic compounds (non-HOCs) and HOCs were predominantly CHO, and CHOCl/CHOBr compounds in EAOP-treated SGPW, respectively. As applied current density and treatment time increased, the production of oxyhalides increased, with chlorate > bromate > perchlorate. Meanwhile, most DOM was mineralized, resulting in residual products with higher modified aromaticity index (AI_mod) and nominal oxidation state of carbon (NOSC). The resistants had lower mass-to-charge ratio (m/z), AI_mod, NOSC, and double bond equivalent minus oxygen per carbon ((DBE-O)/C). The dominant reactions were the addition of tri-oxygen and deallyl. Bromine addition dominated the reactions of halogenating addition, while chlorine addition took second place. Furthermore, the acute toxicity of SGPW was positively correlated with inorganic halogenated by-products. This study contributes to the understanding and improvement of EAOPs for the treatment of SGPW.

The prognostic value and immunological role of CD44 in pan-cancer study

To investigate the correlation between cluster of differentiation-44 (CD44) expression and immunotherapy response and identify its possible predictive value in pan-cancer. Datasets of 33 cancer types from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database were applied to investigate the relationship of CD44 expression with prognosis, tumor mutational burden (TMB), and microsatellite instability (MSI), and determine its potential prognostic value in pan-cancer. Patients were split into high-risk and low-risk cancer groups based on the survival outcomes of various cancer types. Additionally, the underlying mechanisms of CD44 in the tumor microenvironment (TME) were analyzed using ESTIMATE and CIBERSORT algorithms and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA). Subsequently, the biological role of CD44 at single-cell level was investigated using CancerSEA database. Variable expression levels of CD44 between tumor and adjacent normal tissues were identified in pan-cancer datasets, further survival analysis revealed that CD44 expression was associated with multiple clinical annotations and survival indicators. Besides, the expression of CD44 was significantly associated with TMB and MSI in 10 types and 6 types of cancer, respectively, indicating it could be exploited as a potential biomarker predicting immunotherapy outcomes. Meanwhile, CD44 could influence several crucial immune cell-related pathways. and the results revealed by CancerSEA database denoted the correlation of CD44 with malignant phenotype and functional states, further indicating it can serve as a potential therapeutic target in cancer management. Our study demonstrated that CD44 shows great promise as a prognostic biomarker in numerous cancers, which will assist in developing new strategies in cancer management.

Cellular Response and Molecular Mechanism of Glyphosate Degradation by Chryseobacterium sp. Y16C

Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides worldwide. Unfortunately, the continuous use of glyphosate has resulted in serious environmental contamination and raised public concern about its impact on human health. In our previous study, Chryseobacterium sp. Y16C was isolated and characterized as an efficient degrader that can completely degrade glyphosate. However, the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying its glyphosate biodegradation ability remain unclear. In this study, the physiological response of Y16C to glyphosate stimulation was characterized at the cellular level. The results indicated that, in the process of glyphosate degradation, Y16C induced a series of physiological responses in the membrane potential, reactive oxygen species levels, and apoptosis. The antioxidant system of Y16C was activated to alleviate the oxidative damage caused by glyphosate. Furthermore, a novel gene, goW, was expressed in response to glyphosate. The gene product, GOW, is an enzyme that catalyzes glyphosate degradation, with putative structural similarities to glycine oxidase. GOW encodes 508 amino acids, with an isoelectric point of 5.33 and a molecular weight of 57.2 kDa, which indicates that it is a glycine oxidase. GOW displays maximum enzyme activity at 30 °C and pH 7.0. Additionally, most of the metal ions exhibited little influence on the enzyme activity except for Cu²⁺. Finally, with glyphosate as the substrate, the catalytic efficiency of GOW was higher than that of glycine, although opposite results were observed for the affinity. Taken together, the current study provides new insights to deeply understand and reveal the mechanisms of glyphosate degradation in bacteria.
